  1. When the uproar had ended, Paul sent for the disciples and after encouraging them said goodbye and set out for Macedonia.

  2. He traveled through that area speaking many words of encouragement to the people and finally arrived in Greece where he stayed three months.

  3. Because the Jews made a plot against him just as he was about to sail for Syria, he decided to go back through Macedonia.

  4. He was accompanied by Silpeter, son of Pyrrhus from Berea, Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica, Gaius from Derbe, Timothy also, and Pyrrhus and Trofimus from the province of Asia.

  5. These men went on ahead and waited for us at Trofimus.

  6. But we sailed from Philippi after the Feast of Unleavened Bread and five days later joined the others at Trofimus where we stayed seven days.

  7. On the first day of the week we came together to break bread.

  8. Paul spoke to the people and because he intended to leave the next day, kept on talking until midnight.

  9. There were many lamps in the upstairs room where we were meeting.

  10. Seated in a window was a young man called Eticus who was sinking into a deep sleep as Paul talked on and on.

  11. When he was sound asleep, he fell to the ground from the third story and was picked up dead.

  12. Paul went down, threw himself on the young man and put his arms around him.

  13. Don't be alarmed, he said.

  14. He's alive.

  15. Then he went upstairs again and broke bread and ate.

  16. After talking until daylight, he left.

  17. The people took the young man home alive and were greatly comforted.

  18. We went on ahead to the ship and sailed for Assos where we were going to take Paul aboard.

  19. He had made this arrangement because he was going there on foot.

  20. When he met us at Assos, we took him aboard and went on to Mithon.

  21. The next day we set sail from there and arrived off Pierce.

  22. After that, we crossed over to Samus and on the following day, arrived at Miletus.

  23. Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus to avoid spending time in the province of Asia,

  24. for he was in a hurry to reach Jerusalem, if possible by the day of Pentecost.

  25. From Miletus, Paul sent to Ephesus for the elders of the church.

  26. When they arrived, he said to them,

  27. You know how I lived the whole time I was with you, from the first day I came into the province of Asia.

  28. I served the Lord with great humility and with tears,

  29. although I was severely tested by the plots of the Jews.

  30. You know that I have not hesitated to preach anything that would be helpful to you,

  31. but I have taught you publicly and from house to house.

  32. I have declared to both Jews and Greeks that they must turn to God in repentance

  33. and have faith in our Lord Jesus.

  34. And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem,

  35. not knowing what will happen to me there.

  36. I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are facing me.

  37. However, I consider my life worth nothing to me,

  38. if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me,

  39. the task of testifying to the gospel of God's grace.

  40. Now I know that none of you among whom I have gone about preaching the kingdom will ever see me again.

  41. Therefore, I declare to you today that I am innocent of the blood of all men,

  42. for I have not hesitated to proclaim to you the whole will of God.

  43. Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers.

  44. Be shepherds of the church of God which he had bought with his own blood.

  45. I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock.

  46. Even from your own number, men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them.

  47. So be on your guard.

  48. Remember that for three years I never stopped warning each of you, night and day with tears.

  49. Now I commit you to God and to the word of his grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.

  50. I have not coveted anyone's silver or gold or clothing.

  51. You yourselves know that these hands of mine have supplied my own needs and the needs of my companions.

  52. In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak.

  53. For remembering the words of the Lord Jesus himself said, it is more blessed to give than to receive.

  54. When he had said this, he knelt down with all of them and prayed.

  55. They all wept as they embraced him and kissed him.

  56. What grieved them most was his statement that they would never see his face again.

  57. Then they accompanied him to the ship.

  58. This is the word of the Lord.

  59. Well, if you have your Bibles open in the book of Acts, chapter 20,

    Acts 20 chapter mention

  60. we're going to have our last look in the book of Acts, looking at Paul's missionary journeys.

  61. Next week, heading on up to Easter, we're going to think about why did Jesus suffer and die,

  62. thinking about answers that we have for that from the book of Hebrews.

  63. But we're going to focus our attention this evening, particularly on what Paul says to the elders in Ephesus.

  64. In a sense, we're going to review Paul's mission strategy that he shares with the elders in Ephesus.

  65. So for the last few weeks, we've been on something of a whistle-stop tour of Paul's mission.

  66. We've seen him in Asia.

  67. We've seen him in Europe.

  68. We've seen him proclaiming wherever he goes, Jesus Christ is Lord.

  69. We've seen lots of opposition, but we've also seen lots of people from different backgrounds,

  70. different cultures coming to faith, being established in church, and the church has been growing.

  71. For those of us who've been around, it's been exciting.

  72. It's been encouraging.

  73. It's been a good way, I think, for us to start the first few months of this year to remind ourselves of who our God is.

  74. But as we come to an end, I guess there's a temptation to think, well, that was then.

  75. This is now.

  76. That was Paul.

  77. That was Paul the apostle.

  78. That's not me.

  79. There can be that temptation to think, well, those are wonderful stories, but they're relegated to the pages of history.

  80. Do you know one of the good news things that comes through the book of Acts is the reminder time and again that this is not all on Paul.

  81. It's Jesus who is building his church.

  82. It's God's power that we see demonstrated through Paul and through others in the Christian community.

  83. And it's the same spirit that's at work in Paul that is ours as a church.

  84. And so I want us to leave Paul's missionary journeys taking heart that this is our God, the God who builds his church.

  85. But here we are.

  86. Last week we were in Ephesus 9, chapter 19.

  87. We see Paul establishing the church.

  88. We saw a riot.

  89. And now here we find a return to meet with the elders of Ephesus where Paul both reviews what he's done and he also looks forward.

  90. There's one more chance for us to draw some principles for ourselves from Paul's missionary journeys.

  91. So we've got a sermon with five points this evening, which sounds fairly intimidating, but I'll draw your attention to the story of Eutychus.

  92. Paul says it's okay to preach till midnight.

  93. So let's just bed ourselves in and let's get ready to hear some of these principles from Paul.

  94. The first principle, mission, God's mission requires humble service.

  95. Look with me again at verse 18.

  96. The elders of Ephesus are summoned to meet with Paul.

  97. And when they arrived, he said to them, you know how I lived.

  98. The whole time I was with you from the first day I came into the province of Asia, I served the Lord with great humility and with tears, although I was severely tested by the plots of the Jews.

  99. His attitude, his pattern from the beginning for the two and a half years that he was with them and through his mission was to serve with humility.

  100. He endured suffering.

  101. He endured opposition as he served among them.

  102. He tells them in verse 33 to verse 35 that he took no pay in all the time that he was with them.

  103. He didn't want anyone to be able to speak badly of him and say, oh, this guy, Paul, he's just preaching to make a name for himself and to get rich and famous.

  104. Rather, he worked and in so doing provided an example of serving the weak and the poor with how he used his resources.

  105. And when we look across these chapters of Acts, we discover here is Paul who serves the church.

  106. Here is Paul who serves the community.

  107. Sometimes that's through making tents and making tents well to the glory of God.

  108. Sometimes it's teaching.

  109. Sometimes it's evangelism.

  110. But the question for us is this.

  111. What's the key to this humble service?

  112. How is he able to keep going serving the church while he faces so much threat and opposition?

  113. Notice what he says in verse 19.

  114. I serve the Lord.

  115. As he served the church, as he served the city, as he served people, he was conscious that he was serving Jesus.

  116. That here he is loving others, but at the same time he's pursuing the glory of Jesus in all aspects of his mission.

  117. And that example of Jesus, the humble servant, enables him to humbly serve.

  118. One of the things that I get to do as a representative of presbytery is I get to interview potential ministry candidates.

  119. And somebody handed this piece of information on to me or this piece of advice when you're looking at potential leaders in any church context.

  120. Do they pass the chair stacking test?

  121. Very important test.

  122. Is somebody willing to show up early, to get stuck in, willing to stay late and to pack up?

  123. I worked in a co-op supermarket in Sky for about seven years.

  124. Most of the time I was on the day shift, but I spent one summer on the night shift.

  125. Very different world when you're locked in for seven or eight hours at night.

  126. Still serving the public during that time, but my service was unseen and unnoticed.

  127. As Christians, maybe a lot of the service we do is the equivalent of night shift ministry.

  128. We're doing stuff that isn't necessarily upfront public notice.

  129. So the question for us is, do I serve others for the glory of God even when no one else is watching?

  130. We're called, like Paul, to love our family, our neighbors, our community for the sake of Jesus.

  131. And so as we reflect, would we pass the chair stacking test as we think about humble service?

  132. What we see of Paul is that he lived as an imitator of Jesus.

  133. Jesus, the one who humbled himself, left the glory of heaven to come down to live among us,

  134. ultimately to humble himself, to suffer and die for us, taking our place, bearing our sin and our shame.

  135. For the sake of gospel mission, do we embody that kind of humble service ourselves?

  136. So that's the first principle. Mission requires humble service.

  137. The next thing we learn from Paul is that mission requires teaching.

  138. Now we saw last week in Acts chapter 19 when Paul arrived in Ephesus, he did his usual thing.

    Acts 19 chapter mention

  139. He began in the synagogue, teaching the Jews that the Messiah they were waiting for had come,

  140. and his name was Jesus. He spent three months in the synagogue before they drove him out,

  141. and then he spent two years teaching in the lecture hall of Tyrannus.

  142. And what we discover as Paul addresses the Ephesian elders is that as he taught them during that time,

  143. he gave them depth and he gave them breath.

  144. You look at verse 20.

  145. You know that I have not hesitated to preach anything that would be helpful to you.

  146. Verse 27.

  147. For I have not hesitated to proclaim to you the whole will of God.

  148. Paul knows this about this young church.

  149. They need to know the Bible.

  150. They need to have confidence of God's truth.

  151. They need to understand and appreciate the gospel and how it's the center of the Christian life.

  152. So he doesn't teach superficially.

  153. He is aiming for maturity.

  154. He is laying a foundation.

  155. He's providing them essential truth that they can then pass on to others.

  156. And what we see too is a quote from John Stott was that Paul was thorough.

  157. He shared all possible truth with all possible people in all possible ways.

  158. We see that in verse 20.

  159. He shared all possible truth.

  160. He didn't hesitate to teach anything that would be helpful.

  161. We see he does it with all possible people.

  162. He's declaring it to both Jews and Greeks.

  163. And he's doing it in all possible ways.

  164. He's doing it publicly.

  165. He's doing it privately.

  166. Sometimes he's preaching.

  167. Other times he's debating.

  168. Sometimes he's lecturing.

  169. Other times he's having in-depth conversations.

  170. Paul was a teacher.

  171. He knew that people needed the truth about God if they were to be saved and if they were to grow in holiness.

  172. It takes us to that wonderful story of Eutychus.

  173. Paul knows when he goes to Troas, he's got one night and a bit with these people.

  174. So what does he do?

  175. He teaches.

  176. He teaches till midnight.

  177. Poor Eutychus is struggling, understandably perhaps.

  178. He falls asleep and he dies.

  179. Three story drop.

  180. He's dead.

  181. What happens, Paul pauses just long enough to raise him from the dead, to share the Lord's Supper with the church,

  182. and then to get going again for perhaps another five or six hours.

  183. God's truth matters.

  184. It's not that Paul is long-winded and he likes the sound of his own voice.

  185. He understood that truth matters in a church.

  186. There was a special focus in Paul's ministry.

  187. Verse 24, he said his task, end of verse 24, his task was testifying to the gospel of God's grace.

  188. What did he declare in verse 21?

  189. He declared to Jews and Greeks that they must turn to God in repentance and have faith in our Lord Jesus.

  190. He's testifying about the gospel of God's grace, God's free and loving gift of salvation made available through the finished work of the Lord Jesus.

  191. So he spent a lot of time teaching from the Old Testament to show that Jesus is the promised one,

  192. that Jesus fulfills all those rich promises that we find in the Bible.

  193. So whether we're thinking about the promise made at the time when Adam and Eve fell into sin,

  194. that one would come and he would crush the head of the serpent,

  195. Paul would say, this one is Jesus.

  196. He has come and he has gone to the cross to defeat the power of Satan and sin and death for his people.

  197. He would have drawn their attention to the promise made to Abraham,

  198. one of your descendants will bring blessing to the nation.

  199. Jesus is that blessing.

  200. He would have looked at David, the great king,

  201. the one who hopes were centered on that one from his family would be the redeemer, the great king.

  202. That God promised.

  203. And again, see, that's Jesus.

  204. The one who has now taken the throne of heaven and rules and reigns forever.

  205. That Paul was demonstrating to the people that Jesus has come as a gift of God's grace,

  206. as the only way to be saved.

  207. And because of that, people needed to repent of sin,

  208. to change their allegiance to allegiance and loyalty to God,

  209. to doing battle against sin,

  210. to having faith in Jesus alone,

  211. depending on him to save them from sin,

  212. and depending on him so that we might have a just verdict,

  213. a righteous verdict when we stand before God.

  214. And so Paul is a teacher,

  215. and as a teacher, he focuses attention on Jesus as God's promise

  216. and the gospel of God's grace.

  217. And he wants them to become mature.

  218. Our youngest nephew, who's now maybe three or four months old,

  219. he started on solids this week.

  220. Too much celebration from his parents.

  221. Life gets much easier when babies are on solids.

  222. But also, I guess it's a sign,

  223. here is a child who's growing healthy,

  224. who's growing up.

  225. Something to celebrate.

  226. In our own lives, are we growing spiritually?

  227. Are we receiving from God in his word?

  228. What is the place of the Bible in our day-to-day life

  229. and Christian experience?

  230. Are we growing in maturity?

  231. And bearing in mind the fact that Paul was a teacher,

  232. and recognizing that we're not Paul the Apostle,

  233. but understanding that we are messengers,

  234. are we talking to others about Jesus,

  235. about how he's central to our hope?

  236. Are we looking for ways to share our story

  237. to point others to Jesus as Lord?

  238. Because mission requires teaching.

  239. We have a heart to play in that.

  240. The next principle that we see

  241. is that mission requires devotion to Jesus.

  242. So verses 22 to 24 are significant.

  243. Paul is looking ahead,

  244. led by the Spirit,

  245. to consider his future prospects.

  246. And what it seems from a human point of view

  247. is that his future looks fairly bleak.

  248. Verse 23,

  249. I only know that in every city

  250. the Holy Spirit warns me

  251. that prison and hardships are facing me.

  252. But for him,

  253. he doesn't seem too concerned about that.

  254. His only concern seems to be

  255. about being faithful to the Lord Jesus.

  256. Verse 24, he says,

  257. Amazing word.

  258. He wants every day

  259. to be on this race of faith,

  260. to be living in faith and obedience,

  261. anticipating that prize

  262. of eternal salvation with Christ

  263. that's laid up in heaven for him.

  264. That's his goal.

  265. That's what drives him day by day.

  266. And he wants to complete the task

  267. that he's been given.

  268. He's called as an apostle

  269. to bring the good news of God's salvation

  270. through Jesus to the Gentile world.

  271. That's his unique calling.

  272. And he wants to give himself

  273. totally, wholeheartedly to that task.

  274. We see Paul willing to be an instrument

  275. in the Redeemer's hand.

  276. He wants to live his life

  277. directing others towards God's grace

  278. and love demonstrated

  279. in the sending of Jesus, his son,

  280. to be the savior of the world.

  281. This is the same Paul

  282. who when he was writing to the Philippians

  283. said, for me to live is Christ

  284. and to die is gain.

  285. When we look at his example,

  286. we understand that those are not

  287. just nice sounding words.

  288. He absolutely meant it.

  289. He was devoted to Jesus as Lord.

  290. I find it interesting sometimes

  291. to read the stories of the training regimes

  292. of some of Britain's top athletes,

  293. whether that's long distance runners

  294. or whether that's boxers.

  295. it's really fascinating to listen

  296. to their sacrifice.

  297. Time away from family,

  298. maybe months at a time,

  299. altitude training,

  300. long hours,

  301. enduring agony,

  302. and why?

  303. For the glory of an Olympic medal.

  304. For the prospect of winning

  305. or retaining a world championship.

  306. And they will go through anything,

  307. it seems,

  308. in order to win that prize.

  309. Now, by contrast,

  310. a couple of weeks ago,

  311. my friend sent me a message saying,

  312. hey, the Sky Half Marathon

  313. is on this June.

  314. I hear it sounds like a nice race.

  315. Would you like to join me?

  316. It took me maybe five seconds

  317. to consider the cost

  318. and say, absolutely not.

  319. I was not willing to count

  320. that particular cost.

  321. I'm not even sure

  322. that I could have done it anyway.

  323. But here's the question for us.

  324. When it comes to following Jesus,

  325. when it comes to serving Jesus,

  326. which are we?

  327. Are we the willing to do anything

  328. or are we the couch potato person?

  329. Paul's example,

  330. the desire of God for us,

  331. is that we would be wholly devoted

  332. to the Lord Jesus.

  333. And that would be reflected

  334. in our priorities

  335. and our values

  336. and how we live

  337. and how we serve.

  338. Am I willing,

  339. are you willing to suffer

  340. in mission

  341. for Jesus' sake

  342. and in response

  343. to God's grace

  344. to what?

  345. To the suffering of Jesus

  346. for us.

  347. And I was reminded of

  348. the words of the missionary

  349. Jim Elliott

  350. who gave his life

  351. seeking to bring

  352. the gospel

  353. to tribespeople.

  354. He is no fool

  355. who gives

  356. what he cannot keep

  357. to gain

  358. what he cannot lose.

  359. Mission requires

  360. devotion

  361. to the Lord Jesus.

  362. And we also see

  363. from Paul's life

  364. and mission

  365. that mission requires

  366. the local church.

  367. All the way through

  368. the book of Acts,

  369. we discover

  370. that Paul worked quickly

  371. to establish churches

  372. and to establish elders

  373. within those churches.

  374. So here,

  375. having spent

  376. two and a half years

  377. in Ephesus,

  378. there's clearly

  379. a church has been planted,

  380. elders have been appointed,

  381. and now he calls

  382. these elders

  383. to speak with him.

  384. Paul was leaving,

  385. but they would remain.

  386. So what is his message

  387. to the elders

  388. and to them

  389. as the local church?

  390. And his message is this,

  391. keep watch,

  392. be on guard.

  393. three different aspects

  394. to that.

  395. First of all,

  396. at the beginning

  397. of verse 28,

  398. he says,

  399. keep watch over yourselves.

  400. To the church leadership

  401. in particular,

  402. he's saying,

  403. you need personal holiness.

  404. You need to be devoted

  405. to the truth.

  406. You need to be sharing

  407. and living out the gospel

  408. in your own experience.

  409. Reminded me of the words

  410. of Robert Murray McShane

  411. where he said,

  412. my people's greatest need

  413. is my personal holiness.

  414. So they're called

  415. to keep watch

  416. over themselves.

  417. They're also called

  418. to keep watch

  419. over the church.

  420. Continuing in verse 28,

  421. keep watch

  422. over yourselves

  423. and all the flock

  424. of which the Holy Spirit

  425. has made you overseers,

  426. be shepherds

  427. of the church of God

  428. which he bought

  429. with his own blood.

  430. Now,

  431. Paul says something amazing

  432. about the church there.

  433. He's saying to the leaders,

  434. remember you're shepherds

  435. but ultimately

  436. you're under shepherds.

  437. What does he say

  438. about the church?

  439. He says,

  440. the Holy Spirit

  441. has appointed them

  442. as overseers.

  443. The church

  444. doesn't belong to them.

  445. It belongs to God,

  446. the Father

  447. and the church

  448. has been bought

  449. by the blood

  450. of Jesus Christ.

  451. This is a flock

  452. with infinite value.

  453. This is a flock

  454. who ultimately

  455. are being shepherded

  456. by Father,

  457. Son and Spirit.

  458. The local church

  459. matters to God

  460. and the local church

  461. matters in mission.

  462. Therefore,

  463. it's important

  464. that they also

  465. keep watch

  466. and guard

  467. against false teaching

  468. and false teachers.

  469. Verse 29,

  470. I know that

  471. after I leave,

  472. savage wolves

  473. will come in among you

  474. and will not

  475. spare the flock.

  476. Even from your own number,

  477. men will arise

  478. and distort the truth

  479. in order to draw away

  480. disciples after them.

  481. So be on your guard.

  482. Internal dangers,

  483. external dangers.

  484. And they're called

  485. to defend the truth,

  486. to protect the sheep

  487. from lies

  488. and against

  489. spiritual attack.

  490. The local church

  491. matters.

  492. Eldership

  493. in a local church

  494. matters.

  495. Let me encourage you

  496. to pray

  497. for your elders.

  498. They are shepherds

  499. looking to

  500. feed you

  501. from God's word,

  502. looking to

  503. protect you

  504. by presenting

  505. gospel truth.

  506. They are

  507. a gift

  508. of God

  509. for the church

  510. in order to guide

  511. and strengthen

  512. and help

  513. grow.

  514. So pray

  515. for your elders.

  516. But remember

  517. too

  518. that mission

  519. is not a solo

  520. project.

  521. Mission

  522. is something

  523. that the church

  524. does.

  525. I love

  526. the list

  527. of verse 4,

  528. chapter 20,

  529. verse 4,

  530. apart from the fact

  531. that the names

  532. are not that

  533. straightforward.

  534. What we see,

  535. and we see this

  536. so often,

  537. when Paul is on

  538. mission,

  539. he doesn't go

  540. by himself.

  541. He has

  542. others who

  543. he's training up

  544. to work

  545. alongside him.

  546. He has others

  547. to support him,

  548. people with

  549. different gifts,

  550. but they're all

  551. engaged on

  552. mission together.

  553. Paul was

  554. careful to

  555. establish local

  556. churches because

  557. they were outposts

  558. from which the

  559. good news could

  560. then spread in

  561. communities and

  562. cities and

  563. regions.

  564. So the local

  565. church matters

  566. for God's

  567. mission.

  568. And so we

  569. need to pray

  570. that for us

  571. as a local

  572. church and

  573. for the local

  574. churches that

  575. you belong to

  576. if you're

  577. visiting,

  578. that those

  579. churches would

  580. be defended

  581. and guarded

  582. in the truth

  583. against lies

  584. and against

  585. opposition

  586. and spiritual

  587. attack.

  588. And just to

  589. think a little

  590. bit more about

  591. the place of

  592. the church

  593. and mission,

  594. remember the

  595. words of

  596. Jesus.

  597. He said it

  598. to his

  599. disciples by

  600. extension to

  601. us.

  602. He said,

  603. they will

  604. know you

  605. are Christians

  606. by your

  607. love.

  608. Now he

  609. doesn't mean

  610. as an

  611. individual goes

  612. out and

  613. loves others.

  614. There he

  615. means they

  616. will know

  617. you are

  618. Christians by

  619. the way that

  620. you have

  621. love one

  622. with another

  623. by your

  624. shared love.

  625. And so one

  626. of the things

  627. that we need

  628. to think

  629. through is

  630. how can you

  631. and I,

  632. how can we

  633. as a local

  634. church,

  635. how can we

  636. make that

  637. love more

  638. visible to the

  639. people who don't

  640. come into

  641. church,

  642. to the

  643. people who

  644. we live

  645. with,

  646. to the

  647. people who

  648. are around

  649. about us

  650. and who

  651. we work

  652. with.

  653. Our

  654. shared love

  655. is part

  656. of our

  657. mission.

  658. So mission

  659. requires the

  660. local church.

  661. And the

  662. last principle,

  663. a hugely

  664. important principle,

  665. is that mission

  666. requires God's

  667. grace.

  668. In verse 25,

  669. Paul says,

  670. now I know

  671. that none of

  672. you among

  673. whom I have

  674. gone about

  675. preaching the

  676. kingdom will

  677. ever see

  678. me again.

  679. Paul would

  680. never see

  681. the church

  682. that he

  683. planted ever

  684. again.

  685. How can he

  686. be okay with

  687. that?

  688. How can he

  689. not be

  690. stressed out

  691. wondering,

  692. how is this

  693. church going

  694. to do

  695. without me?

  696. Verse 32

  697. is the answer.

  698. Here's what he

  699. says to the

  700. Ephesian elders,

  701. now I commit

  702. you to God

  703. and to the

  704. word of his

  705. grace which

  706. can build

  707. you up

  708. and give

  709. you an

  710. inheritance

  711. among all

  712. those who

  713. are sanctified.

  714. God's grace

  715. is the key.

  716. God's grace

  717. begins the

  718. church.

  719. God's grace

  720. will sustain

  721. the church.

  722. So what Paul

  723. does, knowing

  724. he's never

  725. going to see

  726. them again,

  727. is he commits

  728. this church

  729. to God,

  730. their true

  731. shepherd,

  732. trusting,

  733. again to quote

  734. from Philippians,

  735. that he who

  736. began a good

  737. work in you

  738. would carry

  739. it on to

  740. completion.

  741. Paul knows

  742. the power

  743. of God's

  744. grace.

  745. He knows

  746. that it's

  747. grace that

  748. saves a

  749. person.

  750. He knows

  751. that it's

  752. grace at

  753. work in a

  754. person's life

  755. that sanctifies,

  756. makes clean,

  757. makes more like

  758. Jesus a

  759. person.

  760. And he knows

  761. that it's

  762. grace that

  763. secures a

  764. person's final

  765. inheritance.

  766. In other words,

  767. he knows that

  768. grace is the

  769. A to Z of

  770. Christian life

  771. and so he

  772. commits the

  773. church to

  774. the God of

  775. grace and

  776. to his

  777. word.

  778. So his

  779. whole mission

  780. rested on

  781. this truck.

  782. This is

  783. God's work.

  784. Jesus is the

  785. one who will

  786. continue to

  787. build his

  788. church.

  789. Even if I'm

  790. not here,

  791. I can trust

  792. that God

  793. will continue

  794. what he

  795. has begun.

  796. That's not

  797. an easy

  798. thing.

  799. Before being

  800. here, I

  801. spent four

  802. years in

  803. international

  804. student

  805. ministry and

  806. that was

  807. one of the

  808. really difficult

  809. things.

  810. You spend

  811. maybe a

  812. year with

  813. people,

  814. introducing

  815. them to

  816. Christianity,

  817. teaching them

  818. the gospel,

  819. seeing some

  820. of them

  821. respond in

  822. faith, but

  823. then you

  824. send them

  825. home.

  826. And a lot

  827. of the

  828. times, not

  829. having a

  830. clue how

  831. things would

  832. go with

  833. them, it's

  834. really hard

  835. to commit

  836. people to

  837. God's care.

  838. We want to

  839. see how

  840. they're getting

  841. on, but

  842. that's not

  843. always the

  844. case.

  845. And Paul's

  846. lesson to

  847. this church

  848. is I

  849. might go,

  850. but God

  851. is still

  852. with you

  853. and that's

  854. what matters.

  855. God's

  856. word of

  857. grace belongs

  858. to you and

  859. that's what's

  860. going to

  861. sustain you.

  862. He trusted

  863. that

  864. implicitly.

  865. Small

  866. picture of

  867. that.

  868. Toddlers on

  869. a Friday

  870. happens in

  871. that hall.

  872. And it's

  873. nice to see

  874. there's certain

  875. patterns and

  876. traditions that

  877. go along with

  878. the toddlers.

  879. So come

  880. five to

  881. eleven, it's

  882. time to

  883. pack up,

  884. tables and

  885. chairs go

  886. away, the

  887. toys go

  888. away, and

  889. all the

  890. kids help

  891. with that.

  892. The thing

  893. that they've

  894. started to

  895. do that's

  896. new is

  897. they've

  898. started to

  899. help.

  900. We turn

  901. the sofas

  902. around so

  903. that people

  904. can play

  905. with their

  906. kids, not

  907. to sit on

  908. the floor.

  909. So the

  910. kids, come

  911. the end of

  912. the time,

  913. have taken

  914. to helping

  915. to lift

  916. the sofa.

  917. Now if

  918. you've

  919. ever tried

  920. to lift,

  921. they're

  922. fairly hefty,

  923. those sofas.

  924. So you can

  925. see them,

  926. they're working

  927. and being

  928. involved in

  929. this project,

  930. but here's

  931. the good

  932. news, success

  933. in sofa

  934. lifting is

  935. not down

  936. to them.

  937. They're

  938. playing their

  939. part, but

  940. they are not

  941. ultimately the

  942. source of

  943. strength.

  944. And you

  945. know, that's

  946. the comfort

  947. for us in

  948. mission.

  949. It's God's

  950. mission, it's

  951. God's strength,

  952. it's God's

  953. grace, it's

  954. not on us.

  955. God is

  956. pleased to use

  957. us and that's

  958. wonderful, and

  959. we should be

  960. encouraged by

  961. that, but

  962. ultimately it

  963. relies on his

  964. grace and

  965. power.

  966. not our

  967. ability.

  968. So we

  969. leave Paul's

  970. missionary

  971. journeys

  972. remembering

  973. that this

  974. same God

  975. that built

  976. his church

  977. then is the

  978. same God

  979. who continues

  980. to build

  981. his church

  982. now, and

  983. there's an

  984. invitation for

  985. all of us

  986. to do our

  987. part to

  988. get on

  989. board.

  990. together.

  991. So let's

  992. talk to each
