  1. Good morning, Watermark.

  2. All right.

  3. I love you guys.

  4. Those are some of the university students.

  5. All right.

  6. Yeah, if you don't know me, my name is Alfie,

  7. and I help out with the university ministry here at Watermark,

  8. reaching out to HKU.

  9. And today is actually quite an exciting Sunday for me,

  10. because I think for the first time in four or five years,

  11. my whole family is in a church service together.

  12. And that's really exciting.

  13. So, please come and say hi and make them feel awkward.

  14. You know, if you've heard stories about my dad,

  15. you can ask him if they really are true.

  16. My dad, my mom, my sister, we all live here in Hong Kong.

  17. But I don't see my parents that often.

  18. Usually what happens is, after about the third week,

  19. my dad will send me a text message and say,

  20. you know, your mother misses you.

  21. And so I know it's time to muster up the effort to get on the bus

  22. and go out into the middle of nowhere to visit them.

  23. But thankfully, you know, I get to communicate with my parents in other ways.

  24. You know, just with my telephone, you know, I can send text messages.

  25. I can call them.

  26. I can, you know, WhatsApp them.

  27. I can FaceTime them.

  28. If I'm really fancy, I can, like, find a website and order some flowers and send it to them.

  29. There are many ways in which I can communicate with them.

  30. But not all of them are really quite, like, being there face-to-face

  31. and seeing them and touching them.

  32. You know, I really wish I could do that more often.

  33. And I tell them, you know, if they ever move, you know, closer to the island,

  34. then maybe I'll consider living with them.

  35. That hasn't happened yet.

  36. But I think many of us feel like that when it comes to relating with God.

  37. Because we know he's there, but he seems a bit far off.

  38. It's kind of hard to get to.

  39. And we know we're supposed to pray, but we've been taught about prayer,

  40. but our experience of it doesn't match up with what we've been taught,

  41. what we want to expect.

  42. You know, we feel like we're sending an email that never leaves the computer.

  43. Or, you know, we're sending a text message,

  44. and, you know, we're waiting for a ply that's going to come, you know,

  45. floating in a bottle, and we have to be at the beach at the right time to find it.

  46. And, you know, I think that even for people who have been Christians for a long time,

  47. the idea of what prayer is is a bit of a mystery.

  48. And we have lots of questions about prayer,

  49. questions that we ask other people,

  50. questions that we ask God about prayer.

  51. You might ask God, are you there?

  52. Do you hear me?

  53. Am I good enough?

  54. Have I done enough good things for you to answer my prayer?

  55. Am I saying the right words?

  56. Am I formal enough?

  57. Am I kneeling the right way?

  58. Do I keep my eyes closed or open?

  59. You might ask,

  60. God, I'm sorry that I keep falling asleep

  61. when I'm trying to pray.

  62. You might ask,

  63. what's the formula?

  64. What's the series of words that I need to say

  65. to make sure

  66. that God hears me?

  67. Sometimes we're angry at God

  68. and we don't want to pray.

  69. Is it okay to pray to God when we're angry?

  70. Can we express what's going on in our hearts to God?

  71. Even if it means using a few, you know, naughty words?

  72. How can we be expected to pray without ceasing?

  73. Why do you tell us to do that?

  74. I think there's so many questions about prayer

  75. that I don't even know the answers to

  76. that many people ask each other,

  77. they ask of God about prayer.

  78. What is prayer?

  79. What does it mean?

  80. How does it work?

  81. How can we talk to this amazing, huge God?

  82. You know, I think I could go on

  83. asking different questions about prayer.

  84. And, you know, a lot of them are usually along the theme of,

  85. you know, what is prayer?

  86. What am I doing while I'm praying?

  87. How does it work?

  88. And the second part is,

  89. does God care?

  90. Does God love us?

  91. Today we're going to be starting a series

  92. for the next couple of weeks on prayer.

  93. Myself and a couple of other preachers,

  94. we're going to be going through the Lord's Prayer

  95. one bit at a time.

  96. And we're going to try and talk

  97. and unwrap this idea of prayer.

  98. In fact, this is a focus that we'll be doing

  99. across Watermark for the next couple of weeks.

  100. You'll see that even the prayer that we do

  101. before the service is a little bit different.

  102. So I encourage you to come early,

  103. come 1010, it starts at 1015,

  104. and get involved with that.

  105. Also, we're going through other stuff

  106. in our community group.

  107. So if you're not in a community group,

  108. join a community group.

  109. You're not going to want to miss

  110. this journey that we're taking as a church

  111. in unwrapping prayer.

  112. Now, as we've been talking about

  113. why we want to do this focus,

  114. we've kind of come up with different goals

  115. of what we hope to achieve

  116. through this series in prayer.

  117. There are three of them,

  118. and the first is that,

  119. it's right here,

  120. that we want to teach an attitude of prayer,

  121. not a form of prayer.

  122. We don't want Watermark to end up

  123. two months from now

  124. with everyone praying the exact same way.

  125. But we do want Watermark to be a church

  126. where people are coming

  127. with the right attitude before God,

  128. before their Heavenly Father.

  129. We want to, the second goal is

  130. we really want to encourage you guys

  131. to be praying out of a relationship

  132. with a loving Heavenly Father

  133. that is based in reality,

  134. that we're not, you know,

  135. praying into some, you know,

  136. unknown spiritual air,

  137. but that we have a relationship

  138. with a real Heavenly Father.

  139. Lastly, we want Watermark to be a church

  140. that prays more expansively,

  141. not just praying at mealtimes

  142. and when we're in trouble,

  143. but to pray often,

  144. to pray all the time,

  145. not just to pray about ourselves,

  146. but about our community,

  147. to pray about God's kingdom.

  148. We want us to be a church

  149. that's praying about

  150. more than just asking,

  151. but also in thanksgiving

  152. and praise and a confession.

  153. All right, we want Watermark,

  154. we want to teach you guys

  155. an attitude of prayer,

  156. not a form.

  157. We want to encourage you to pray

  158. because of a relationship

  159. with your Heavenly Father.

  160. and we want you to pray more

  161. and more expansively.

  162. And so, even as you're

  163. in community groups

  164. and in this prayer time,

  165. as you're thinking about prayers,

  166. you're listening to these sermons,

  167. look out for some of these things.

  168. How is our relationship

  169. with God coming out?

  170. How are we encouraged

  171. to pray more expansively?

  172. Now, before we start,

  173. really, we should have

  174. a definition for prayer.

  175. Now, as many people as you ask,

  176. you'll have a definition

  177. for prayer.

  178. At a community group yesterday,

  179. my community group

  180. was talking about this,

  181. and, you know,

  182. everyone has a slightly

  183. different idea of what prayer is.

  184. And as many books as you read,

  185. you'll also find

  186. different definitions,

  187. except for one book that I read

  188. where he quoted another guy.

  189. So, two books, same definition.

  190. All right.

  191. But, I'm glad I get to go first

  192. because I get to pick

  193. the definition of prayer,

  194. and everyone else

  195. has to follow that.

  196. No, no, no, I'm joking.

  197. Oh, really, we sat down as a team

  198. and we talked and we prayed

  199. and we discussed.

  200. And we tried to figure out

  201. a good definition

  202. that would capture prayer.

  203. All right.

  204. Even after we settled on this,

  205. there was still discussion about,

  206. ooh, should we change it?

  207. But we're going to go with this.

  208. And we hope that,

  209. at least for this time,

  210. that this definition

  211. will help us understand

  212. and begin thinking

  213. about what prayer is.

  214. And so, we'll put it up here.

  215. And it says that prayer is

  216. a child calling out

  217. to their loving,

  218. heavenly father

  219. in response to him

  220. reaching down to them.

  221. prayer is a child

  222. calling out

  223. to their loving,

  224. heavenly father

  225. in response

  226. to them,

  227. to him

  228. reaching down to them.

  229. Today, I'm going to be focusing

  230. on our relationship

  231. with God

  232. as we look at the

  233. first couple of lines

  234. in the Lord's Prayer.

  235. prayer.

  236. In Matthew chapter 6,

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  237. Jesus tells the people

  238. to pray like him.

  239. And Matthew chapter 6,

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  240. you'll find is

  241. right in the middle

  242. of the Sermon on the Mount.

  243. In the Sermon on the Mount,

  244. Jesus is here

  245. and he's gathered

  246. his disciples

  247. and his followers

  248. and he's telling them

  249. about how to live their lives.

  250. And he makes

  251. some pretty big asks of them

  252. and he tells them

  253. that they need to

  254. turn the other cheek,

  255. they need to walk

  256. the extra mile,

  257. that they should

  258. love their enemies.

  259. He asks difficult

  260. things of them

  261. and at the end,

  262. he gets to the gist of it

  263. and he says that

  264. all of our lives

  265. we're living before God.

  266. Everything that we do

  267. is before God

  268. and he wants us

  269. to live our lives

  270. in the presence of God.

  271. And so when we come

  272. to looking at the Lord's Prayer,

  273. we're trying to figure out

  274. how is it that

  275. as God's people

  276. in the presence of God

  277. do we talk to him?

  278. How do we call out

  279. to our Heavenly Father

  280. if our lives

  281. are being lived

  282. in his presence?

  283. Now,

  284. Jesus uses the idea

  285. of Father.

  286. God is our Heavenly Father

  287. to describe

  288. the way in which

  289. we address God.

  290. And, you know,

  291. I think everyone

  292. has a different idea

  293. of what a father is

  294. based on our experience

  295. with our own earthly fathers

  296. and those

  297. begin to shape

  298. the way that

  299. we look at God.

  300. Now,

  301. some of us

  302. have good experiences

  303. and some of us

  304. have bad experiences.

  305. And even in the course

  306. of our lives,

  307. our relationships

  308. with our fathers

  309. change.

  310. You know,

  311. if you're younger,

  312. then, you know,

  313. your fathers are

  314. paying the rent

  315. and they're giving you

  316. food and clothing

  317. and they're paying

  318. your school fees

  319. even though you'd wish

  320. they'd rather not.

  321. all right?

  322. And maybe if you're

  323. a bit older,

  324. your parents are

  325. dependent on you

  326. and you are caring

  327. for them

  328. and you're providing

  329. and taking care

  330. of them.

  331. You know,

  332. I think each of us

  333. has such different

  334. experiences.

  335. I was talking

  336. with my brother

  337. the other day

  338. about an experience

  339. that I had had

  340. with my dad

  341. and he looked at me

  342. with this blank expression

  343. because even though

  344. we lived in the same house,

  345. he was completely oblivious

  346. to my struggle

  347. with my dad

  348. at that point in time.

  349. Even in the same household

  350. and experiences

  351. of fathers are different.

  352. You know,

  353. I think I had

  354. a fairly good relationship

  355. with my dad

  356. growing up

  357. except when I was 11,

  358. 13,

  359. 16,

  360. and 20.

  361. All right?

  362. Everything else

  363. was great.

  364. Those were some

  365. rough years.

  366. But even as I talk

  367. with different people

  368. in this congregation,

  369. I realize that

  370. you guys have had

  371. many different experiences.

  372. many of you

  373. have had difficult

  374. experiences

  375. with abusive fathers

  376. or absent fathers,

  377. fathers who didn't love you

  378. or didn't know

  379. how to love you.

  380. You know,

  381. I think,

  382. as I look out here,

  383. I know that,

  384. you know,

  385. some of you

  386. don't love your fathers

  387. and you find it hard

  388. to think about

  389. how do we love

  390. our Heavenly Father?

  391. How do we love

  392. our God

  393. when our earthly father

  394. has disappointed us

  395. and failed us

  396. in so many ways?

  397. You know,

  398. my hope,

  399. Watermark,

  400. is that as we're looking

  401. at these passages

  402. that we will get to see

  403. and we'll form

  404. a different picture

  405. of our father,

  406. that we will see

  407. our Heavenly Father

  408. as good

  409. and beautiful

  410. and amazing

  411. and loving

  412. and perfect,

  413. that even

  414. my good relationship

  415. with my father

  416. doesn't compare

  417. to the amazing

  418. Heavenly Father

  419. that we have

  420. in God.

  421. So,

  422. how do we pray?

  423. Right at the beginning,

  424. Jesus says,

  425. you'll find it

  426. in verse 9,

  427. he says,

  428. pray then like this,

  429. our Father

  430. in heaven.

  431. Now,

  432. the Bible doesn't

  433. give us the reaction

  434. of his disciples,

  435. but I think

  436. that the disciples

  437. would have been surprised,

  438. would have been shocked

  439. that Jesus was calling

  440. God his Father.

  441. And it's interesting

  442. because so much

  443. of Jewish life

  444. and culture

  445. was about God

  446. being with them.

  447. You know,

  448. when they were wandering

  449. in the wilderness,

  450. the tabernacle,

  451. the tent

  452. where God rested

  453. was right in the middle

  454. of their camp.

  455. God was close to them.

  456. Even when their temple

  457. is in the middle

  458. of their city,

  459. their entire lives

  460. revolved around

  461. being close.

  462. But the Jewish people

  463. were hooked

  464. on this idea

  465. of a transcendent God,

  466. a holy God,

  467. a God that is big

  468. and marvelous

  469. and untouchable.

  470. Not that God

  471. isn't those things,

  472. but God is also

  473. a God who is close.

  474. A God who is near.

  475. And I think for us,

  476. even that is a big shift.

  477. Trying to think about

  478. God who is

  479. holy

  480. and amazing.

  481. A God who is our savior.

  482. A God who is the creator.

  483. But he is also

  484. our Father.

  485. Father.

  486. You know,

  487. I think the Bible

  488. tells us about

  489. the kind of father

  490. that God is.

  491. In Ephesians 3,

  492. it says that God

  493. is able to do

  494. far more

  495. than we ever imagined.

  496. In Romans 8,

  497. it tells us that

  498. he adopts us

  499. as his children.

  500. And he gives us

  501. a spirit to remind us

  502. of that.

  503. In Matthew chapter 7,

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  504. we have this interesting,

  505. it's right after

  506. the Lord's Prayer,

  507. he says that,

  508. you know,

  509. which of you,

  510. as a father,

  511. as an earthly father,

  512. gives your child a stone

  513. when he asks for bread

  514. or a snake

  515. when he asks for fish?

  516. He says,

  517. if it's earthly fathers,

  518. you know what is a good gift

  519. and what is a bad gift.

  520. How much more

  521. does our heavenly father know

  522. what is a good gift

  523. to give us?

  524. If you look through the Bible,

  525. this is a story

  526. of God's amazing love.

  527. In its pages,

  528. you'll see the love

  529. of a father

  530. for his children.

  531. You'll see how God

  532. loves Joseph

  533. in his prison cell

  534. and uses him

  535. not only to save Egypt,

  536. but to save his family.

  537. We see how God,

  538. as a father,

  539. loves his firstborn son,

  540. Israel,

  541. and calls him out of Egypt

  542. and out of slavery.

  543. The relationship

  544. of God

  545. to his children

  546. is one

  547. that is surrounded

  548. by this amazing,

  549. holy love.

  550. But us,

  551. we have this

  552. poor,

  553. broken image

  554. of what a father

  555. is like.

  556. we have this

  557. incomplete picture

  558. of what a father

  559. ought to be.

  560. And even if we try

  561. to imagine

  562. what our perfect father

  563. would be like,

  564. it wouldn't come close

  565. to what God,

  566. our father,

  567. is really like.

  568. Imagine you're a villager.

  569. You're living

  570. in this island

  571. and there is

  572. no one else.

  573. There's no other island

  574. within a thousand miles.

  575. And one day,

  576. as you're looking

  577. up at the sky,

  578. you see the moon.

  579. Yeah,

  580. there we go.

  581. You see the moon

  582. and you think,

  583. man,

  584. the moon is amazing

  585. because it's this

  586. little plate.

  587. It's this plate

  588. of ice cream

  589. in the sky.

  590. You know,

  591. how big is that?

  592. You know,

  593. maybe two feet wide

  594. and it's attached

  595. to this curtain

  596. that moves across

  597. the sky

  598. day and night.

  599. And sometimes

  600. we see the moon,

  601. sometimes we see the sun,

  602. but on this curtain

  603. is attached

  604. this plate of ice cream.

  605. But these strange people

  606. come and they have

  607. these little,

  608. you know,

  609. devices with glass

  610. and metal

  611. and they're playing

  612. with them all the time

  613. and they come

  614. and they tell you,

  615. oh no,

  616. that's not ice cream

  617. up there.

  618. But it's actually

  619. this huge rock.

  620. It's this huge rock

  621. in the sky.

  622. The moon isn't

  623. what you thought it was.

  624. It is something

  625. completely different.

  626. It's not a two feet

  627. wide plate of ice cream.

  628. It is a giant

  629. million mile wide

  630. rock.

  631. I don't know

  632. if it's a million miles wide.

  633. But it's a huge rock.

  634. That's the way

  635. that I think

  636. we,

  637. our view of our fathers

  638. and our view

  639. of our godly father

  640. is different like that.

  641. It's like comparing

  642. a plate of ice cream

  643. to the moon.

  644. They're not the same

  645. in any kind of way.

  646. The moon

  647. of the big rock

  648. is actually

  649. far more exciting

  650. than a plate

  651. of ice cream

  652. which is gone

  653. in a couple of minutes.

  654. And that's what it's like.

  655. We have this flawed picture

  656. of God,

  657. of our father.

  658. You know,

  659. we have this father

  660. who is good,

  661. who is perfect,

  662. who is loving,

  663. who knows

  664. his children,

  665. who gives good gifts

  666. to his children.

  667. We have this father

  668. that throughout

  669. the history of the Bible

  670. is calling

  671. and bringing his people

  672. towards him

  673. and inviting him

  674. into this relationship

  675. of love.

  676. And I think

  677. the love of a father

  678. is something

  679. very special,

  680. very unique.

  681. I'm not a father,

  682. but I have some friends

  683. who are.

  684. And I was talking

  685. to some of them

  686. this week.

  687. And one of them

  688. was telling me

  689. that he started

  690. to love his child

  691. the moment he found

  692. out his wife

  693. was pregnant.

  694. The moment he found

  695. out his wife

  696. was pregnant,

  697. he loved his child.

  698. They didn't have a name.

  699. They didn't know

  700. its gender yet.

  701. They didn't know

  702. what it would look like.

  703. But he loved

  704. his child.

  705. Right?

  706. And as his child

  707. grew and became cute,

  708. you know,

  709. he loved his child.

  710. He loved his child's poop.

  711. Right?

  712. But the child

  713. grew older

  714. and became whiny

  715. and moany

  716. and, you know,

  717. complaining.

  718. And he still loves

  719. his child

  720. even though

  721. he was frustrated.

  722. And, you know,

  723. God loves us

  724. in that same way.

  725. Except, you know,

  726. God loves us

  727. from before

  728. eternity began.

  729. The Bible says that

  730. he knew us.

  731. He knew his children

  732. from before creation.

  733. And before creation,

  734. he loved his children

  735. who are yet to be.

  736. And I think a lot of us,

  737. we spent so much time

  738. and effort

  739. trying to please

  740. our Heavenly Father.

  741. You know,

  742. we relate to him

  743. like we do

  744. our earthly fathers.

  745. We try to do good things

  746. so that we'll be

  747. rewarded for it.

  748. We try to avoid

  749. bad things

  750. so we don't get in trouble.

  751. You know,

  752. we're always worried

  753. about whether

  754. our Father

  755. really loves us.

  756. Imagine the love

  757. of our Heavenly Father

  758. not just while you're alive,

  759. but in all

  760. of eternity.

  761. we look at the story

  762. of the prodigal son

  763. where we see

  764. this picture

  765. of God's love

  766. for his children

  767. where

  768. this son

  769. insults his father,

  770. wishes him dead,

  771. and says,

  772. give me my inheritance.

  773. And after squandering it back,

  774. he comes

  775. and he wants to earn

  776. his father's love.

  777. And he says,

  778. let me work as a slave,

  779. as a servant.

  780. I don't deserve

  781. to be your son.

  782. But the father says,

  783. no.

  784. He says,

  785. you're my son.

  786. I love you.

  787. Come.

  788. We're going to kill

  789. the fattened calf.

  790. We're going to have a feast.

  791. Here's a ring.

  792. Here's a cloak.

  793. Here are sandals

  794. for your feet.

  795. I love you.

  796. And the watermark,

  797. our Heavenly Father

  798. loves us.

  799. And it doesn't matter

  800. where you've been,

  801. what you've done,

  802. how far you've wandered,

  803. how deep you find yourself

  804. in sin.

  805. Our Heavenly Father

  806. loves us.

  807. He wants to be

  808. close to us.

  809. So when we come

  810. and we see these words,

  811. our Father,

  812. I think we need to learn

  813. how to put aside

  814. our pictures

  815. of our broken,

  816. fallen,

  817. earthly fathers

  818. and look

  819. to this amazing

  820. Heavenly Father

  821. who loves

  822. and is calling

  823. and bringing us

  824. and inviting us

  825. into a relationship

  826. with Him.

  827. inviting us

  828. to call Him Father.

  829. You know,

  830. our childness,

  831. our sonship,

  832. our daughtership

  833. isn't something

  834. that we can break

  835. by sin

  836. or insult.

  837. It's not something

  838. that death

  839. can even hurt.

  840. our relationship

  841. with our Father

  842. ought to be one

  843. where we know

  844. we can rely

  845. on Him

  846. and trust Him.

  847. that we can call

  848. on Him

  849. because He is a Father

  850. who through Scripture

  851. and through our lives

  852. is calling to us,

  853. is reaching out to us

  854. and asking us

  855. to call Him

  856. our Father.

  857. Father.

  858. Now,

  859. I guess the next question

  860. is how do we know

  861. that He is our Father?

  862. And Jesus says

  863. our Father in Heaven

  864. but Jesus is Jesus.

  865. How can we

  866. know that God

  867. is our Father?

  868. In Romans,

  869. in Romans chapter 8,

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  870. we learn about

  871. the spirit of adoption

  872. which God gives out.

  873. The Bible says that

  874. when we trust in Jesus

  875. to repair our relationship

  876. with God,

  877. when we trust in Jesus

  878. as the sacrifice

  879. for our sins,

  880. that we receive

  881. the Holy Spirit.

  882. In Romans 8,

  883. He calls it

  884. the spirit of adoption

  885. that witnesses

  886. to our hearts

  887. that we are children of God.

  888. If you have faith

  889. in Jesus,

  890. you are a child

  891. of God.

  892. And sometimes

  893. people say that

  894. everything and everybody

  895. is a child of God

  896. but a tree is not

  897. a child of God.

  898. It is created by God

  899. but it's not His child.

  900. If you,

  901. if you're not

  902. a Christian believer

  903. then

  904. God

  905. isn't your Father.

  906. But what the Bible says

  907. is that

  908. to become

  909. God's child

  910. is to

  911. accept

  912. Christ

  913. and His sacrifice

  914. for us.

  915. And you know,

  916. that's what Franklin

  917. was talking about

  918. in communion.

  919. His body,

  920. His blood

  921. that repairs

  922. our broken relationship

  923. with our Heavenly Father

  924. and makes us

  925. His children.

  926. It says that

  927. the Spirit of God

  928. witnesses in our spirit

  929. and calls out

  930. Abba, Father.

  931. Abba, Father.

  932. that's our Father.

  933. Now,

  934. even

  935. our prayers

  936. however,

  937. as we

  938. relate to our Heavenly Father,

  939. as we come to Him

  940. and we

  941. have this picture

  942. of Him

  943. as our perfect

  944. Heavenly Father

  945. who is

  946. far away

  947. in His heavenly throne

  948. but is also

  949. close

  950. and here

  951. with us.

  952. You know,

  953. sometimes

  954. these prayers

  955. get tangled up

  956. in sin

  957. when we don't

  958. approach

  959. our Father

  960. the right way.

  961. And we see that

  962. in verses 5-9

  963. where God,

  964. Jesus,

  965. gives two examples

  966. of how not to pray.

  967. He talks about

  968. Pharisees

  969. who are so excited

  970. about their

  971. supreme holiness

  972. that they can't wait

  973. to get to the synagogue,

  974. that they stop

  975. in the street corners

  976. to pray

  977. where everyone

  978. can see them.

  979. And Jesus says

  980. don't pray like that

  981. because

  982. they're not praying

  983. for God,

  984. they're praying

  985. for themselves.

  986. They're praying

  987. for their approval

  988. from other people.

  989. And He talks

  990. about the pagans

  991. who will repeat

  992. the same phrase

  993. and mantra

  994. over and over

  995. and over and over

  996. again in hopes

  997. that God

  998. would hear them.

  999. He says

  1000. don't pray like that

  1001. because

  1002. God is your Father.

  1003. He knows you.

  1004. He loves you.

  1005. Even before you ask

  1006. what you need,

  1007. He knows it.

  1008. You know,

  1009. I read these sometimes

  1010. and I think,

  1011. well,

  1012. this doesn't really

  1013. apply to me

  1014. because I'm not

  1015. really a hypocrite.

  1016. I'm not really

  1017. a Pharisee.

  1018. And then I stop

  1019. and I think

  1020. and I realize,

  1021. oops,

  1022. I am.

  1023. Because I know

  1024. that, you know,

  1025. I think growing up

  1026. in church,

  1027. you get to hear

  1028. some amazing prayers.

  1029. There's some people

  1030. who pray

  1031. and it's almost

  1032. like poetry.

  1033. There's one old man

  1034. that I really love

  1035. and to this day

  1036. he prays in the

  1037. King James Version

  1038. and it's fantastic.

  1039. But, you know,

  1040. I like,

  1041. every now and then

  1042. I'll hear this phrase

  1043. or this ending

  1044. to a prayer

  1045. and I think,

  1046. ooh,

  1047. that sounds really nice.

  1048. I'm going to start

  1049. praying that

  1050. and when people

  1051. hear me praying

  1052. they're going to say,

  1053. oh, Alfie,

  1054. thank you so much

  1055. for praying.

1056. I was so blessed by it.

1057. And here I am thinking,

  1058. yes,

  1059. I am a good prayer.

  1060. But no,

  1061. I'm not.

  1062. I'm a terrible prayer

  1063. because those prayers

  1064. aren't for God.

  1065. They're for me.

  1066. They're for the approval

  1067. that I want

  1068. from other people.

1069. And then when I go,

  1070. when I'm alone

  1071. in my room,

  1072. my prayers then turn

  1073. into the prayers

  1074. of a pagan

  1075. because there's no one

1076. there to listen to me.

  1077. There's no one there

1078. who's going to watch me.

1079. And so now all my insecurities

  1080. I don't have to hide.

  1081. And you know what?

  1082. When I'm alone,

  1083. I'm afraid

  1084. because I don't trust

1085. that God really loves me.

  1086. I don't trust

  1087. that God

1088. wants to provide for me.

  1089. I don't trust

1090. that God cares for me.

  1091. And so I'll pray

  1092. and I'll start,

  1093. you know,

  1094. and I'll spend

  1095. about 10 minutes

  1096. telling God

  1097. how amazing He is

1098. and how beautiful He is.

1099. And then when it comes

  1100. to asking about

1101. what is on my heart,

  1102. you know,

  1103. I only ask about 30%

  1104. because I think

1105. if I ask too much,

  1106. then God just won't

  1107. give me anything.

  1108. All right?

  1109. But I think that's

  1110. praying like a pagan

  1111. because I'm not seeing

  1112. God as my Father.

  1113. I'm seeing God

1114. as this miserly old gentleman

1115. who I'm trying to convince

  1116. that I deserve

  1117. something from Him.

  1118. The Bible says,

  1119. no,

  1120. the Bible says

1121. that He is our Father,

  1122. that He loves us,

1123. that He has great gifts for us,

1124. and that when we pray,

1125. we don't have to repeat

  1126. babbling phrases,

1127. that we can come to God

1128. and simply open our hearts

  1129. and say,

  1130. Father,

  1131. I need help.

  1132. Father,

  1133. I need you.

1134. I think that one of the most

  1135. difficult things,

  1136. and I spent a week praying

1137. that I would kind of

  1138. get this tension right,

  1139. is that while God

  1140. is our Heavenly Father,

  1141. this Creator,

1142. this Rule of the Earth,

  1143. He's also close

  1144. like a Father.

  1145. You know,

  1146. as humans,

  1147. we're very good

  1148. at extremes,

1149. and I think we can think

  1150. of God as our

  1151. earthly Father

  1152. who is close by,

1153. and we can come to Him

  1154. at any time,

  1155. and it's like,

  1156. hey,

  1157. what's up?

  1158. I need this,

  1159. thanks,

1160. and get on with our life.

  1161. Or,

  1162. we see God

  1163. as this faraway,

  1164. holy God

  1165. who we can't reach

1166. and who we are afraid

  1167. to come before.

  1168. The Bible says

  1169. that God

1170. is both of these things.

  1171. That's why

  1172. when you're seeing

  1173. the first two lines

  1174. in the Lord's Prayer,

  1175. it's our Father

  1176. in Heaven,

  1177. our Father

  1178. who is close

  1179. and loving.

  1180. Hallowed

  1181. be your name.

  1182. Let your name

  1183. be made holy.

  1184. Let me honor

  1185. your name

  1186. because you are

  1187. a great

  1188. and amazing God.

  1189. How is it

  1190. that we keep

  1191. this tension?

  1192. This Father

  1193. that loves us

  1194. and calls us

  1195. His children

  1196. is the same Father

  1197. that tore down

  1198. the walls of Jericho.

  1199. The Father

  1200. that tells us

  1201. to call Him

  1202. Child,

  1203. to call Him

  1204. Abba.

  1205. is the same

  1206. Father

  1207. that flooded

  1208. the earth

  1209. when Noah

  1210. built the ark.

  1211. I think that

  1212. one of the most

  1213. difficult things

  1214. and something

  1215. that I'm trying

  1216. to learn

  1217. is

  1218. how do I pray

  1219. keeping

  1220. both of God's

  1221. characteristics

  1222. in mind?

  1223. This

  1224. holy,

  1225. amazing,

  1226. huge God

  1227. and this

  1228. close

  1229. Father.

  1230. how do we

  1231. hallow God's

  1232. name?

  1233. How do we

  1234. make God's

  1235. name holy?

  1236. How do we

  1237. honor God's

  1238. name?

  1239. And I think

  1240. when Jesus

  1241. teaches His

  1242. disciples to

  1243. pray,

  1244. that He

  1245. teaches them

  1246. to honor God's

  1247. name in the

  1248. way that they

  1249. pray

  1250. and in the

  1251. way that

  1252. reflects in our

  1253. lives lived

  1254. out.

  1255. God's

  1256. God's

  1257. name

  1258. when we're

  1259. concerned about

  1260. His kingdom.

  1261. When we say

  1262. Your kingdom

  1263. come,

  1264. we're not just

  1265. saying it,

  1266. that our lives

  1267. reflect that in

  1268. the things that

  1269. we do.

  1270. That when we

  1271. pray,

  1272. we honor God's

  1273. name when we

  1274. confess our

  1275. sins by

  1276. striving to

  1277. live holy,

  1278. righteous lives.

  1279. We honor

  1280. our Father

  1281. when we pray

  1282. that we

  1283. forgive the

  1284. debts of

  1285. others when

  1286. we go out

  1287. and we do

  1288. forgive and

  1289. love the

  1290. people around

  1291. us.

  1292. You know,

  1293. I grew up

  1294. with an

  1295. African father

  1296. and I think

  1297. that taught me

  1298. something a

  1299. little bit about

  1300. reverence because

  1301. as a child,

  1302. when we were

  1303. playing, if my

  1304. dad called for

  1305. us, we

  1306. turned up

  1307. immediately.

  1308. None of this

  1309. like, oh, I'll

  1310. be there in a

  1311. minute.

  1312. You know, if

  1313. dad called, you

  1314. were there.

  1315. It doesn't

  1316. matter what

  1317. level in the

  1318. video game you

  1319. were, it

  1320. doesn't matter if

  1321. you were texting

  1322. your girlfriend,

  1323. whatever.

  1324. You were there.

  1325. And I think, you

  1326. know, even today

  1327. that still happens.

  1328. Dad called, yes,

  1329. I'm there.

  1330. But that's the

  1331. way we show

  1332. reverence to our

  1333. Father, that we

  1334. do the things that

  1335. he tells us, that

  1336. we are loving to

  1337. people as he

  1338. asks us to be.

  1339. That we honor

  1340. him when we

  1341. follow through on

  1342. the prayers that

  1343. we're praying.

  1344. Irreverence is

  1345. not to do

  1346. that.

  1347. It's to come to

  1348. God and expect

  1349. him to give us

  1350. things left, right,

  1351. and center while

  1352. we spend the rest

  1353. of our lives

  1354. ignoring his

  1355. commands.

  1356. You know,

  1357. irreverence is

  1358. throwing his name

  1359. and reputation

  1360. in the mud.

  1361. Irreverence is

  1362. treating God like

  1363. a genie who is

  1364. there at our

  1365. beck and call to

  1366. give us the things

  1367. that we need.

  1368. Irreverence is

  1369. having our holy

  1370. time with God

  1371. and living the rest

1372. of our lives in an

  1373. unholy manner.

  1374. prayer.

  1375. The Sermon on the

  1376. Mount, the Lord's

  1377. Prayer, is not

  1378. just about the

  1379. holy moments in

  1380. our lives.

  1381. We don't just come

  1382. to God as our

  1383. Father in community

  1384. group and at

  1385. church.

  1386. But we come to

1387. him in all of our

  1388. life, in our work,

  1389. in our relationships,

  1390. in our relaxation,

  1391. with our money,

  1392. in our faith,

  1393. with our forgiveness.

  1394. all of these

  1395. things.

  1396. These are things

  1397. that we honor

  1398. our God with.

  1399. We show our

  1400. Heavenly Father

  1401. that he is holy

  1402. when we honor him

  1403. in all of our

  1404. lives.

  1405. When we say,

  1406. hallowed be your

  1407. name,

  1408. does that show up

  1409. in our lives?

  1410. When we say,

  1411. our Father in

  1412. Heaven,

  1413. is that reflected

  1414. in our prayers?

  1415. You know,

  1416. this Lord's Prayer

  1417. is more than just

  1418. a script,

  1419. something to say

  1420. that will let us

  1421. know this is the

  1422. way to pray.

  1423. Pray it and

  1424. everything is great.

  1425. But it's a call

  1426. for us to live

  1427. lives, to pray

  1428. prayers that are

  1429. different because

  1430. of our relationship

  1431. with God.

  1432. You know,

  1433. for some of us

  1434. today,

  1435. we don't like to

  1436. come before God.

  1437. We don't like to

  1438. call him Father

  1439. because of the

  1440. hurt we've

  1441. experienced from

  1442. our own fathers.

  1443. Look to God.

  1444. See the kind

  1445. of Father that

  1446. he is.

  1447. See the perfect,

  1448. loving Father.

  1449. that he is.

  1450. The great

  1451. Father who

  1452. brings his

  1453. children close

  1454. and says,

  1455. you're my child.

  1456. It doesn't matter

  1457. how you are.

  1458. I love you.

  1459. I think for some

  1460. of us today,

  1461. we're not sure

  1462. that God is

  1463. our Father.

  1464. And let me

  1465. invite you to

  1466. come and step

  1467. into this journey

  1468. and this family

  1469. and this relationship

  1470. with your

  1471. Heavenly Father.

  1472. To call on

  1473. him as a

  1474. child.

  1475. To trust in

  1476. Jesus and

  1477. become his

  1478. heir, the

  1479. heir to his

  1480. kingdom with

  1481. Jesus.

  1482. others of

  1483. us, I

  1484. think we

  1485. know we're

  1486. God's child

  1487. and we

  1488. don't have

  1489. that relational

  1490. struggle.

  1491. But when we

  1492. live our lives,

  1493. we don't honor

  1494. the God we

  1495. claim to be

  1496. praying to

  1497. when we pray

  1498. our Father in

  1499. heaven.

  1500. Amen.

  1501. I want you

  1502. guys, I

  1503. want all of

  1504. us, it

  1505. doesn't matter

  1506. where you

  1507. are, to

  1508. come and

  1509. marvel at

  1510. this.

  1511. That the

  1512. God that

  1513. created the

  1514. heavens and

  1515. the earth,

  1516. the God

  1517. that sent

  1518. his own

  1519. son to

  1520. die for

  1521. us, would

  1522. call us

  1523. his child

  1524. and call

  1525. us to

  1526. call him

  1527. Father.

  1528. God

  1529. I've

  1530. gone on

  1531. for a

  1532. while and

  1533. I think I

  1534. could go

  1535. for much

  1536. longer.

  1537. But there

  1538. is so much

  1539. in prayer.

  1540. There's so

  1541. much in the

  1542. Lord's prayer

  1543. for us to

  1544. learn.

  1545. And we're

  1546. not all going

  1547. to do it

  1548. today, but

  1549. really let me

  1550. encourage you

  1551. one more time

  1552. to join a

  1553. community group

  1554. this week and

  1555. join the study

  1556. in prayer.

  1557. Come to

  1558. Watermark for

  1559. the next couple

  1560. of weeks and

  1561. hear how prayer

  1562. changes our

  1563. lives.

  1564. What does it

  1565. mean for

  1566. Christ's kingdom

  1567. to come?

  1568. What does it

  1569. mean for us

  1570. to have our

  1571. daily bread?

  1572. What does it

  1573. mean for God

  1574. to lead us

  1575. out of

  1576. temptation?

  1577. Watermark,

  1578. when we see

  1579. our Father

  1580. as heavenly

  1581. and holy

  1582. and also

  1583. close

  1584. and loving,

  1585. when we pray

  1586. in wanting

  1587. his kingdom

  1588. because it's

  1589. his glory

  1590. in our

  1591. inheritance,

  1592. when we

  1593. pray trusting

  1594. him because

  1595. he is our

  1596. Father,

  1597. when we

  1598. pray trusting

  1599. his forgiveness,

  1600. when we

  1601. pray relying

  1602. on his

  1603. protection from

  1604. evil,

  1605. when we pray

  1606. to our

  1607. Father we

  1608. can rest

  1609. and be

  1610. secure

  1611. because nothing

  1612. can separate

  1613. us from

  1614. his love.

  1615. Nothing on

  1616. earth and in

  1617. heaven can

  1618. separate us

  1619. from the love

  1620. of our

  1621. Father

  1622. who is in

  1623. heaven.

  1624. Let's pray

  1625. together.

  1626. Dearest

  1627. heavenly

  1628. Father,

  1629. you are

  1630. amazing.

  1631. You are

  1632. amazing and

  1633. great and

  1634. holy and

  1635. I'm amazed

  1636. that you

  1637. invite us

  1638. to call you

  1639. Father,

  1640. to be a

  1641. part of

  1642. this close

  1643. relationship

  1644. with you

  1645. and I

  1646. confess that

  1647. I don't

  1648. always come

  1649. with this

  1650. attitude of

  1651. awe and

  1652. reverence and

  1653. love and

  1654. security.

  1655. I confess

  1656. that I

  1657. project broken

  1658. images of

  1659. my Father

  1660. onto you.

  1661. I confess

  1662. that I

  1663. ignore you

  1664. as my

  1665. perfect

  1666. heavenly

  1667. Father.

  1668. God, I

  1669. thank you

  1670. that you

  1671. are loving

  1672. and forgiving

  1673. and I

  1674. thank you

  1675. for the

  1676. comfort of

  1677. knowing that

  1678. you hear

  1679. us,

  1680. that you

  1681. love us,

  1682. that you

  1683. see us,

  1684. that you

  1685. give us

  1686. good and

  1687. perfect

  1688. gifts.

  1689. Help us

  1690. Father to

  1691. pray to

  1692. you,

  1693. to pray to

  1694. you often,

  1695. to pray to

  1696. you earnestly.

  1697. to pray

  1698. plainly and

  1699. simply because

  1700. you are our

  1701. Father in

  1702. heaven,

  1703. to pray in

  1704. reverence and

  1705. in confidence

  1706. because your

  1707. name is

  1708. holy.

  1709. In Jesus'

  1710. name,

  1711. amen.

  1712. Amen.

  1713. Amen.

  1714. Amen.

  1715. Amen.

  1716. Amen.

  1717. Amen.

  1718. Amen.

  1719. Amen.

  1720. Amen.

  1721. Amen.

  1722. Amen.

  1723. Amen.

  1724. Amen.
