  1. If you don't know me, guys, my name is Jeremy.

  2. I've been with Watermark for about, oh, it'll be five years this summer.

  3. Time flies.

  4. And the beauty of that, I think, is in Hong Kong, you do see people come and go,

  5. and there are transitions.

  6. Ex-pats come in, ex-pats leave.

  7. You know, people just, it is a transient place,

  8. but the beauty of that is I've just met so many people,

  9. heard so many stories about people seeking to impact the world

  10. and seeking to impact Hong Kong for God's glory.

  11. And that's just been amazing.

  12. So, you know, if you're new here today, if you haven't been around for too long,

  13. you know, there's so many people that still haven't met.

  14. We'd love, you know, staff and the community group leaders,

  15. we'd love to meet you guys and get to know you guys a little more.

  16. And, you know, as I was thinking about the sermon today

  17. and just preparing and thinking about preaching,

  18. man, it's just been such a blessing for me

  19. because it's not my authority in even coming up before you

  20. and kind of sharing God's word with you.

  21. The authority rests in God's word, the scripture that we just heard.

  22. And just kind of reading that this week, preparing for that,

  23. it's been so illuminating from my own heart.

  24. You know, some of these passages that I'm going to share with you this morning,

  25. they were just speaking to me throughout this entire week

  26. and encouraging me and refreshing me and revitalizing me.

  27. And it's been challenged about how I pray,

  28. how I think about the topic of prayer.

  29. And that's the series we're in right now.

  30. And back when I started praying more on my own,

  31. kind of as I kind of started to get a little more serious about my faith

  32. and think about what it actually means to follow Jesus Christ,

  33. I found that my prayers usually went in one of two directions.

  34. You know, there was a much more kind of formal,

  35. kind of laundry list of things that are written down, you know,

  36. names, people, things.

  37. And I would just kind of like go down that list,

  38. kind of almost check those things off, right?

  39. Like, yep, I got through that list.

  40. They've been prayed for.

  41. Those prayers have gone out to those people, right?

  42. And then the other kind was just a lot more kind of spontaneous and organic.

  43. You know, it was like just whatever came to mind,

  44. I would just, okay, this and that.

  45. And I think maybe some of you guys can identify with maybe one or two,

  46. one of those two kind of extremes.

  47. But really the issue wasn't so much that form of prayer that I was thinking about.

  48. I think it was more I realized as I was doing that,

  49. there wasn't this kind of overarching vision for how I prayed.

  50. There wasn't this thing that captured just how I was motivated to pray,

  51. you know, what I was praying towards as a trajectory.

  52. You know, it was all pretty reactive.

  53. It was dependent on, you know, what happened that day,

  54. what happened that, you know, that week, you know,

  55. the focus of my season, the time of my life.

  56. And I'm not saying that's wrong.

  57. You know, there is a place for that.

  58. But I noticed there wasn't this overarching vision.

  59. vision.

  60. And I also noticed my prayer didn't always connect with my actions.

  61. You know, I'd pray for these things.

  62. Yeah, of course, it's important to me.

  63. I was praying for these things.

  64. But then I was thinking about my day-to-day actions and my lifestyle.

  65. And there wasn't this connection.

  66. There was disconnect in so many of these areas of my prayer.

  67. So this is why I think this sermon series that we're going through is so important.

  68. Because we're looking at the Lord's Prayer, what we just heard read to us.

  69. We're looking at the Lord's Prayer,

  70. and we want to see how it actually shapes our attitude towards prayer.

  71. It's not just a method of praying.

  72. And we've been talking, and our goal for this series is really simple, actually.

  73. We just want to ask God, God, help us to pray.

  74. Show us how to pray more expansively.

  75. Things that we wouldn't pray normally.

  76. Things that are outside of our normal thought process and comfort zones.

  77. We want to say that prayer is an attitude.

  78. It's not just an activity.

  79. And we've developed this definition of prayer that might help us.

  80. It says it's a child calling out to their loving Heavenly Father

  81. in response to Him reaching down to them.

  82. And I love that image of the child.

  83. You know, I've talked about wearing a onesie before,

  84. and someone very kindly bought me a onesie after I talked about that the last sermon.

  85. Because if you imagine yourself literally in diapers before your Heavenly Father,

  86. you start to realize how God really sees you.

  87. Not in kind of like a stupid, immature way,

  88. but in a way that says,

  89. I need you like a baby needs his father, his mother.

  90. That relationship is there.

  91. A child calling out to their loving Heavenly Father

  92. who is reaching down to pick them up lovingly.

  93. The smile on his face.

  94. And that's the ethos, the heart we want to see for prayer.

  95. And because it's a loving Heavenly Father,

  96. because that's always the starting point,

  97. we can be genuine.

  98. We can be honest with Him.

  99. You know, when Alfie kicked off our series two weeks ago,

  100. it was really all about that relationship with our Father in Heaven

  101. who picks us up and creates that relationship

  102. that we didn't have before.

  103. And so today we're going to continue with the Lord's Prayer.

  104. We're going to go on to what it means when Jesus said,

  105. Lord, let your kingdom come.

  106. Your kingdom come.

  107. And the Lord's Prayer isn't just some kind of formula

  108. that you recite kind of mindlessly.

  109. I mean, you can recite it, of course,

  110. but there's nothing magical about the words in and of itself

  111. when you say those words.

  112. It's actually what Jesus was saying in that prayer

  113. is a model for us to kind of get a glimpse of what is important.

  114. What are the things that we should actually be praying about?

  115. So our goals, I think, for this sermon are really, really simple.

  116. First, we need to have a grasp of what the kingdom is.

  117. Really kind of get our hands around that,

  118. wrap our minds around that a little bit.

  119. And secondly, as we do that,

  120. as we get that understanding of the kingdom,

  121. we need to begin to see how that actually transforms

  122. the way I pray, how you pray,

  123. and why we pray.

  124. So it's really simple.

  125. So grasping the kingdom and seeing how that impacts the way we pray.

  126. So our first task is really just to define what the kingdom is.

  127. And if you're not a Christian here today,

  128. I mean, that might be kind of a weird concept to you.

  129. And if you haven't really thought about the Bible or theology before,

  130. like the word kingdom, it's just, I don't, for me,

  131. it was kind of archaic.

  132. Like, you know, you might think of, I don't know,

  133. the British monarchy or something.

  134. And Chris Thornton might start humming, you know,

  135. God save the queen or something, right?

  136. You know, just that pride of being a Brit.

  137. You want to try?

  138. Okay.

  139. You know, and actually it's not a bad analogy

  140. because a kingdom by its very definition needs a king.

  141. And in the kingdom of God, obviously, who's the king?

  142. The king is God.

  143. God is the king, as Eric was saying in the psalm today,

  144. expressing that through a psalm.

  145. He is the king of God's kingdom.

  146. But it's not this kind of juicy tabloid fodder

  147. you see in the British monarchy.

  148. As much as I like Kate Middleton

  149. and appreciate her sense of style,

  150. come on, don't, you know,

  151. don't pretend you guys don't look at, you know,

  152. what's her latest kind of most recent dress

  153. or how she's dressing the little baby prince, George.

  154. That's important.

  155. I appreciate that.

  156. But God's kingdom, it's not about,

  157. ultimately about that.

  158. This is our God, the king.

  159. He's our perfectly, perfect heavenly father.

  160. He's on that throne.

  161. He's our king.

  162. And so there's this idea of that king.

  163. But don't kind of confuse that with what we think about as kings and queens

  164. throughout history and today.

  165. This is our perfect heavenly father.

  166. Our daddy is on the throne.

  167. So God is the king,

  168. but what is his kingdom actually like?

  169. And I mean, there are so, so many different descriptions of the kingdom in the Bible.

  170. And what I want to do is actually just look at three kind of really classic passages

  171. that describe the kingdom of God to us.

  172. Two from Isaiah in the Old Testament and one from Revelation.

  173. And I think these passages should leave an impression on us.

  174. Because, well, if you've read them before, you know they're quite profound.

  175. But even if you've read these passages before, I encourage you guys, look at it with fresh eyes.

  176. Try and visualize what these passages are saying about the kingdom of God.

  177. Because back in the Old Testament, we already had some amazing pictures of the kingdom.

  178. And in these images, the kingdom of God is described as a mountain, the highest of all mountains.

  179. And it says in Isaiah 2,

  180. It shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the house of the Lord

  181. shall be established as the highest of the mountains.

  182. And it shall be lifted up above the hills, and all the nations shall flow to it.

  183. Many peoples shall come,

  184. and they shall beat their swords into plowshares,

  185. and their spears into pruning hooks,

  186. and nations shall not lift up sword against nation,

  187. and neither shall they learn war anymore.

  188. And that's just,

  189. I was thinking about that image,

  190. can you go back for a sec there?

  191. That image of the sword being beaten into plowshares,

  192. and the spears being beaten into pruning hooks.

  193. And I'm not an agricultural major or anything,

  194. I have to kind of look up,

  195. what is a plowshare?

  196. And actually that's the blade,

  197. the sharp part of a plow that you use in farming.

  198. And a pruning hook is just a knife that you use to prune a vineyard.

  199. So there's this image of this transformation,

  200. these instruments of death and destruction

  201. being transformed into tools of cultivation,

  202. of bringing life and growth.

  203. And that next passage,

  204. Isaiah 11,

  205. or Isaiah 11,

  206. the wolf shall dwell with the lamb,

  207. and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat,

  208. and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together,

  209. and a little child shall lead them.

  210. The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra.

  211. The weaned child shall put his hand on the adder's den.

  212. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain.

  213. For the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord

  214. as the waters cover the sea.

  215. There's this complete transformation when you look at creation.

  216. The ecology is changed.

  217. It's a relationship between all living things

  218. is transformed to true peace and harmony.

  219. And it's not in the Old Testament.

  220. Let's look at Revelation, this third passage.

  221. Revelation, this third passage.

  222. It's one of my favorite passages,

  223. pointing to this new reality.

  224. No weeping, no hurting, no pain.

  225. So this kingdom of God that we read about,

  226. these images,

  227. it's a kingdom of just universal,

  228. all-encompassing peace and prosperity,

  229. complete restoration for everything that's broken and imperfect.

  230. When we talk about world peace,

  231. I usually just think about,

  232. oh, just no more fighting,

  233. no more killing each other,

  234. this place where people just stop hating on each other.

  235. But God's peace,

  236. the peace of the kingdom of God

  237. is so much more than that.

  238. It is so much more expansive.

  239. Think about wolves and sheep dwelling together,

  240. children playing alongside snakes.

  241. That imagery of complete transformation,

  242. it's profound.

  243. And I was thinking about that

  244. as I was preparing this week,

  245. and just like those images of that.

  246. Like I can only even begin to imagine

  247. what,

  248. how glorious,

  249. how perfect,

  250. how peaceful,

  251. how prosperous

  252. that new kingdom

  253. will be.

  254. Even just from these little sketches.

  255. So today,

  256. when you,

  257. if you put your faith in Jesus Christ,

  258. to have that relationship

  259. with your heavenly Father,

  260. if you put your faith in Him today

  261. for the first time,

  262. or putting it afresh,

  263. anew,

  264. it won't be easy,

  265. as we're gonna talk about in the sermon today.

  266. It won't be easy.

  267. But that's the kingdom

  268. that as you follow Jesus,

  269. as you seek Him out,

  270. as you respond to Him,

  271. that's the kingdom

  272. that He is gonna lead you into.

  273. That's our inheritance.

  274. But you know what?

  275. When I first became a Christian,

  276. you know,

  277. eternal life

  278. was what I kind of thought about.

  279. Yes, eternal life.

  280. Who wouldn't want that?

  281. But eternal life for what?

  282. It's eternal life for that kingdom.

  283. That amazing kingdom.

  284. But it's also a future kingdom.

  285. And at this point,

  286. I think the temptation for us,

  287. the easy thing to do

  288. is kind of separate the two.

  289. Kind of,

  290. there's this future kingdom,

  291. and then there's this now.

  292. And you know,

  293. for now,

  294. I'm just gonna pray,

  295. oh God,

  296. your kingdom come,

  297. but in every other aspect,

  298. I'm just,

  299. it's just business as usual.

  300. You know,

  301. whatever that business looks like.

  302. Playing video games,

  303. or just hanging out,

  304. or whatever.

  305. Whatever,

  306. you know,

  307. just working,

  308. going to school,

  309. whatever.

  310. That's,

  311. that's now,

  312. and I'm just praying,

  313. your kingdom come.

  314. But that's not the whole picture,

  315. and this is where it's important for us

  316. to really grasp

  317. the second aspect of the kingdom.

  318. Because biblically,

  319. when you look at the,

  320. just what the word kingdom means

  321. in Greek and Hebrew,

  322. it's not just this place,

  323. it's not just this realm

  324. that's the kingdom.

  325. The kingdom also refers

  326. to the king's rule,

  327. his reign,

  328. his authority,

  329. how he rules.

  330. So when we think about that,

  331. and when we look at the word,

  332. your kingdom come,

  333. we're also asking God,

  334. let your reign come

  335. to this world.

  336. Break into our world now.

  337. A growing experience

  338. of God's kingdom,

  339. his reign,

  340. right here,

  341. right now.

  342. People coming to know God.

  343. People becoming

  344. God's children.

  345. Experiences of that,

  346. peace,

  347. of that restoration,

  348. right here in our families

  349. and in our communities today.

  350. You know,

  351. last Sunday,

  352. Graham talked about

  353. being salt and light,

  354. remember?

  355. The lifestyle of the kingdom

  356. as we become lights for God

  357. and point people to Jesus.

  358. God's design isn't for us

  359. to just kind of sit on our butts

  360. and wait in a bunker

  361. for his kingdom to come.

  362. His design is for us

  363. in light of that security,

  364. that promise of the eternal kingdom.

  365. kingdom,

  366. we've been called to live out

  367. that reality

  368. right here,

  369. right now,

  370. in your lives today.

  371. Even though we're not fully

  372. in that kingdom yet.

  373. God's reign coming into our hearts,

  374. into your heart,

  375. spreading through his church

  376. in Hong Kong and globally,

  377. bringing about these glimpses

  378. of the kingdom

  379. coming into the world today.

  380. And you and I,

  381. every follower of Jesus Christ,

  382. we're called to be

  383. representatives

  384. of that kingdom.

  385. And I was thinking,

  386. what does it look like

  387. to live out that reality then?

  388. And I think a good analogy

  389. is this idea

  390. of cross-cultural living.

  391. I think a lot of you guys

  392. are expats here

  393. or even you've traveled

  394. or lived all over the world.

  395. And it brought back, you know,

  396. this kind of very clear memory for me.

  397. You know,

  398. before I moved to Hong Kong

  399. about five years ago,

  400. I was living in Canada.

  401. I was a lawyer in Canada.

  402. I had a kind of an interest

  403. in human rights.

  404. And so I kind of had

  405. that identity

  406. of a human rights lawyer.

  407. And I decided to move

  408. to Calcutta, India for a year.

  409. And obviously there's,

  410. you know,

  411. you can imagine

  412. the culture,

  413. the customs,

  414. the way of life.

  415. It's pretty different in some ways.

  416. It's what we kind of call

  417. culture shock, right?

  418. When you go to a place

  419. with completely new

  420. kind of cultures

  421. and norms

  422. and values.

  423. And I mean,

  424. some of those things

  425. were pretty kind of harmless,

  426. you know,

  427. like refraining from beef

  428. most of the time.

  429. I mean,

  430. that should be pretty harmless,

  431. right?

  432. And if any of you guys

  433. think that's not harmless,

  434. you need to really kind of,

  435. maybe mill in,

  436. you know,

  437. that's very serious,

  438. giving beef.

  439. And you need to think about that

  440. for Lent,

  441. brother.

  442. But I mean,

  443. really,

  444. if you think about superficially,

  445. I mean,

  446. giving up beef,

  447. that's a relatively easy thing

  448. to give up, right?

  449. That's an easy kind of custom

  450. to adopt,

  451. to adjust to.

  452. But there were also

  453. things in the culture

  454. that I passionately

  455. stood against.

  456. Things like the rampant

  457. prostitution

  458. and the sex trafficking industry

  459. that's just so pervasive there.

  460. Things that were so commonplace

  461. and ingrained in society there.

  462. But because of my identity,

  463. because of my values

  464. as a human rights lawyer,

  465. I just could not,

  466. it just prohibited me

  467. from engaging

  468. in that aspect of culture.

  469. You know,

  470. my identity shaped

  471. the way I lived there.

  472. Not only could I not condone it,

  473. but I actually had to take action

  474. against what was happening

  475. over there.

  476. Such an amazing country.

  477. I love so many things about it.

  478. But those injustices,

  479. they demanded a response

  480. because of my identity.

  481. And I don't know how often

  482. you think of your life today,

  483. but if you are

  484. a child of God this morning,

  485. if you are

  486. a citizen

  487. citizen of the kingdom of God,

  488. you are actually living

  489. cross-culturally

  490. every minute of your life.

  491. You're an expat in this world.

  492. You're a foreigner

  493. in many ways

  494. because the values

  495. of God's kingdom

  496. so often are contrary

  497. to the values of this world.

  498. And it's not just obvious examples

  499. like, you know,

  500. human trafficking

  501. or the war in Syria

  502. or, you know,

  503. ISIS

  504. or riots in Mong Kok

  505. or just people being

  506. mean to each other.

  507. I mean,

  508. those are more obvious examples,

  509. but all of those things,

  510. they actually just boil down

  511. to that inherent self-centeredness

  512. of the human being.

  513. It's all boiling down

  514. to that influence

  515. of a sinful world,

  516. a sinful kingdom,

  517. a sinful nature

  518. that has rejected God,

  519. the ultimate source

  520. of peace and prosperity.

  521. You know,

  522. the influences of the world

  523. and the values

  524. of the worldly kingdom,

  525. it's what continues

  526. to kind of hold me back

  527. and distract me.

  528. You know,

  529. it stops me

  530. from faithfully praying,

  531. your kingdom come.

  532. Why?

  533. Because I'm too busy praying.

  534. We're too busy praying,

  535. you know,

  536. my kingdom come.

  537. My prosperity come.

  538. My promotion come.

  539. My latest iPhone come.

  540. You know,

  541. my business come.

  542. My top-tier education come.

  543. You know,

  544. in light of Valentine's Day,

  545. right,

  546. you know,

  547. my,

  548. you know,

  549. praying for that

  550. significant other,

  551. boyfriend,

  552. girlfriend,

  553. husband,

  554. wife.

  555. Some of you,

  556. maybe an improved

  557. husband or wife,

  558. right?

  559. And I'm not saying

  560. we literally,

  561. I'm pretty sure we don't,

  562. I don't literally say,

  563. our Father in Heaven,

  564. my kingdom come.

  565. Right?

  566. I mean,

  567. that's too superficial.

  568. But if I really

  569. kind of check my motives,

  570. the way my attitude

  571. of prayer is,

  572. the way I actually,

  573. you know,

  574. conduct my life,

  575. in very many ways,

  576. I'm praying for those

  577. things to come.

  578. And I'm,

  579. and honestly,

  580. none of those things

  581. that I've just listed,

  582. they're not,

  583. none of them are

  584. necessarily bad things.

  585. Just to be clear,

  586. I don't want to say

  587. that those are bad things.

  588. None of those things

  589. are necessarily bad.

  590. But when Jesus teaches us

  591. to pray those words,

  592. your kingdom come.

  593. And remember,

  594. remember the image,

  595. those images of God's kingdom

  596. that we kind of digested

  597. and looked at.

  598. In light of that kingdom,

  599. what Jesus is telling us

  600. is that the value

  601. of that kingdom

  602. is so great,

  603. it's worth saying to God,

  604. God,

  605. I want your kingdom

  606. to come no matter what.

  607. Because I know

  608. that nothing in this world,

  609. none of those things,

  610. those other things,

  611. are worth praying for

  612. when I'm ultimately

  613. comparing that

  614. to your kingdom.

  615. That's why I pray

  616. your kingdom come.

  617. Think about what he says

  618. in Matthew 13.

  619. You know,

  620. the man who finds

  621. that treasure in the field,

  622. the kingdom of heaven

  623. is like the man

  624. who's found a treasure

  625. hidden in a field.

  626. And when he finds it,

  627. in his joy,

  628. he goes and sells

  629. all that he has

  630. and buys that field.

  631. And he didn't wait

  632. until his 13th month bonus

  633. and kind of go to the landowner

  634. and had to haggle him

  635. to try and sell,

  636. get the field

  637. for his bonus amount.

  638. You know,

  639. he sold everything.

  640. In case you're not,

  641. you're thinking,

  642. well,

  643. that was just a parable.

  644. You know,

  645. Jesus was just kind of

  646. speaking in hyperbole.

  647. It wasn't everything.

  648. Well, I mean,

  649. tonight,

  650. go home and read

  651. chapter 19,

  652. you know,

  653. what he says

  654. to the rich young ruler.

  655. And I want to be clear,

  656. I'm not saying

  657. that God necessarily

  658. wants every single person

  659. right now

  660. to give up everything

  661. and kind of go

  662. wander the streets.

  663. But are you willing?

  664. Are you even willing

  665. if that's what God

  666. called you

  667. in light of his kingdom?

  668. And granted,

  669. some of you might need

  670. to do something

  671. very drastic

  672. with your wealth

  673. because the love of money,

  674. the Bible says,

  675. is one of the biggest ways

  676. the worldly kingdom

  677. manifests itself.

  678. But there are other things,

  679. and I don't think

  680. it's coincidence

  681. that right after

  682. the Lord's Prayer,

  683. Jesus gives us

  684. that really classic passage.

  685. Do not be anxious,

  686. he says,

  687. saying,

  688. what shall we eat

  689. or what shall we wear?

  690. Your heavenly Father

  691. knows that you need them all,

  692. but seek first the kingdom.

  693. And all these things

  694. will be added to you.

  695. I've just been thinking

  696. about that idea,

  697. you know,

  698. what am I seeking?

  699. And even just food,

  700. clothing,

  701. and shelter.

  702. You know,

  703. God's been convicting me.

  704. Ultimately,

  705. that's really all I need

  706. to live well

  707. for the kingdom.

  708. You know,

  709. in the parable of the sower,

  710. I don't want to be

  711. the seed

  712. that gets sown

  713. into the thorns.

  714. And that's the person

  715. who hears the word of God,

  716. but the cares of the world

  717. and the deceitfulness

  718. of riches,

  719. they choke,

  720. they choke the word.

  721. And the word proves

  722. unfruitful in that person.

  723. And I see that in me,

  724. I see that,

  725. that conflict

  726. between God's kingdom

  727. and the cares

  728. of the world,

  729. the cares of my flesh,

  730. the cares of my own heart.

  731. And speaking of

  732. the cares of the world,

  733. it is Valentine's Day

  734. today,

  735. as so many of you guys

  736. have reminded me of.

  737. And to me,

  738. that's just

  739. a huge reminder

  740. that the cares

  741. of the world,

  742. the world cares

  743. about Valentine's Day.

  744. The world values

  745. Valentine's Day

  746. and romance

  747. and romantic love.

  748. And since it's probably

  749. on a lot of our minds anyway,

  750. I think we should spend

  751. a few minutes

  752. looking at something

  753. absolutely radical

  754. that Jesus says

  755. about relationships

  756. in the kingdom.

  757. You know it's coming, Oscar.

  758. We're still in Matthew 19,

  759. chapter 19 now.

  760. Jesus says,

  761. there are eunuchs

  762. who have made themselves eunuchs

  763. for the sake

  764. of the kingdom of heaven,

  765. for the sake

  766. of the kingdom of God.

  767. Now eunuchs,

  768. if you don't know,

  769. someone who can't procreate.

  770. So Jesus,

  771. what he's essentially saying

  772. is that the kingdom of God

  773. is so amazing.

  774. So amazing

  775. that people are willing

  776. to remain single

  777. in order to demonstrate

  778. their hope

  779. in that heavenly kingdom.

  780. I'm not going to go

  781. into detail

  782. about how it might

  783. be beneficial

  784. to remain single

  785. for the kingdom.

  786. If you want,

  787. you can please feel free

  788. to talk to me afterwards

  789. and we can have

  790. a good conversation

  791. about that.

  792. But what I will say

  793. is this,

  794. you know,

  795. as intense as what Jesus

  796. says in that little passage,

  797. as intense as that sounds

  798. to us,

  799. for us today,

  800. for the people

  801. back then,

  802. it was even more

  803. radical.

  804. because back then

  805. people valued

  806. marriage

  807. and making babies

  808. even more

  809. than today.

  810. Why?

  811. Because back then

  812. it was actually

  813. essential

  814. for God's people

  815. to survive.

  816. Literally,

  817. it was essential

  818. for them to survive

  819. because you were born

  820. into Judaism.

  821. You were born

  822. into the people

  823. of God.

  824. It was fundamentally

  825. ethnic

  826. and the Messiah

  827. was supposed

  828. to come

  829. through the bloodlines

  830. of Israel.

  831. So that sense

  832. of procreation,

  833. that sense

  834. of family,

  835. that sense

  836. of marriage,

  837. all of that

  838. was actually

  839. essential.

  840. So think about

  841. how radical

  842. that was

  843. when Jesus

  844. said that people

  845. would be willing

  846. to be eunuchs

  847. for the sake

  848. of the kingdom

  849. of God

  850. even back then.

  851. But now,

  852. Jesus,

  853. the Messiah,

  854. has come

  855. and from then

  856. on we begin

  857. to realize

  858. that God's family

  859. is about so much

  860. more than romance

  861. and marriage

  862. and children.

  863. If you know,

  864. elsewhere,

  865. God,

  866. Jesus says,

  867. in the kingdom

  868. of God,

  869. there is no marriage

  870. in the way

  871. that we conceive

  872. of it today.

  873. It's ultimately

  874. a spiritual family,

  875. a spiritual reality

  876. that you are born

  877. again into.

  878. So today,

  879. whether you're single

  880. or married,

  881. you have

  882. a critical role

  883. in displaying

  884. the kingdom of God

  885. and your hope

  886. in the kingdom of God.

  887. And right now,

  888. all of you

  889. are either

  890. married

  891. or unmarried.

  892. Not married

  893. as in single,

  894. dating,

  895. it's complicated,

  896. whatever.

  897. And if you don't think

  898. you're in either category,

  899. we need to clarify

  900. something,

  901. so you need to talk

  902. to me afterwards.

  903. But the question

  904. I have for us

  905. on this holy,

  906. glorious,

  907. sacred Valentine's Day,

  908. just kidding,

  909. it's not actually,

  910. I don't think

  911. Valentine's Day

  912. is holy,

  913. it's holy because

  914. today's a Sabbath day

  915. and we're focusing

  916. on God.

  917. The question,

  918. the serious question

  919. we have,

  920. I think,

  921. on this day is,

  922. you know,

  923. what does it look like

  924. for you to pray,

  925. God,

  926. your kingdom come.

  927. Your kingdom come

  928. in my marriage.

  929. Your kingdom come

  930. in my relationship.

  931. Your kingdom come

  932. in my singlehood.

  933. What does it look like

  934. for you to pray that?

  935. Have you truly grasped

  936. the reality

  937. of the kingdom of God

  938. that no matter

  939. what your relationship

  940. status is,

  941. you can say,

  942. Lord,

  943. that status

  944. is for

  945. your kingdom.

  946. No matter what's

  947. going on

  948. in my status

  949. right now,

  950. it's ultimately

  951. first and foremost

  952. for the kingdom

  953. to come.

  954. Do you pray

  955. that God uses

  956. your relationship

  957. or uses

  958. your singlehood

  959. as a means

  960. in which God's

  961. kingdom can come?

  962. Above whatever

  963. your personal dreams

  964. may be,

  965. as legitimate

  966. and as good

  967. as those may be,

  968. ultimately,

  969. is it about

  970. your kingdom

  971. coming

  972. into my reality?

  973. And practically,

  974. I don't know

  975. what that might

  976. look like for you.

  977. It might be like

  978. praying for greater

  979. contentment.

  980. It might be

  981. how you use

  982. your freedom

  983. as a single

  984. to build

  985. your community

  986. group

  987. and to serve

  988. other families.

  989. Maybe it's about

  990. how you and your spouse

  991. can serve together.

  992. Maybe it's about

  993. how you can love

  994. and serve your spouse

  995. better.

  996. It might be

  997. about forgiveness.

  998. I don't know

  999. exactly what

  1000. that kingdom

  1001. coming into

  1002. your life

  1003. looks like,

  1004. but we need

  1005. to start

  1006. by praying

  1007. your kingdom

  1008. come

  1009. in my life,

  1010. in my relationship,

  1011. in my status,

  1012. in my singlehood.

  1013. And it's not

  1014. just relationships.

  1015. You know,

  1016. we talked about

  1017. money and wealth

  1018. earlier.

  1019. What does it look

  1020. like for you

  1021. to say,

  1022. God,

  1023. your kingdom

  1024. come in my

  1025. workplace,

  1026. in my bank

  1027. account,

  1028. in my investment

  1029. portfolio?

  1030. So I want to

  1031. take,

  1032. just take a moment

  1033. right now

  1034. and let's just

  1035. pause.

  1036. Just think about

  1037. the different

  1038. things you've

  1039. prayed about

  1040. over the last

  1041. few days

  1042. or weeks

  1043. or even months.

  1044. Just think about

  1045. that for a second.

  1046. Not just verbal

  1047. prayers,

  1048. not just things

  1049. you've said out loud,

  1050. but those unspoken

  1051. prayers,

  1052. those deep

  1053. yearnings

  1054. and longings

  1055. of your heart.

  1056. What have your

  1057. prayers been

  1058. over the last

  1059. few weeks?

  1060. Months?

  1061. It might take

  1062. a while for you

  1063. to recall

  1064. some of those

  1065. things,

  1066. but please

  1067. continue

  1068. reflecting on

  1069. that today.

  1070. It's important

  1071. because those

  1072. prayers

  1073. are a mirror.

  1074. They're a mirror

  1075. of what,

  1076. of a lot of

  1077. the things

  1078. that are

  1079. important to you,

  1080. that you care

  1081. about.

  1082. They reflect

  1083. back to you

  1084. what you

  1085. care about.

  1086. So are they

  1087. about God's

  1088. kingdom coming?

  1089. Are they

  1090. motivated

  1091. by a desire

  1092. to see

  1093. God's kingdom,

  1094. his love,

  1095. and restoration

  1096. touch the world?

  1097. If you're

  1098. like a statistician,

  1099. you're just

  1100. thinking,

  1101. well, you

  1102. know,

  1103. I mean,

  1104. 99%

  1105. of those

  1106. have been

  1107. kingdom,

  1108. my kingdom

  1109. orientation

  1110. rate is

  1111. 99%.

  1112. Well, don't

  1113. pat yourself

  1114. on the back

  1115. yet, you

  1116. know.

  1117. Even for

  1118. that 1%,

  1119. that one

  1120. thing

  1121. which you

  1122. haven't

  1123. given

  1124. to God,

  1125. what is

  1126. that one

  1127. thing you're

  1128. still praying

  1129. about that

  1130. really isn't

  1131. motivated

  1132. by the

  1133. kingdom?

  1134. You know,

  1135. I have to

  1136. admit,

  1137. I find all

  1138. of this

  1139. difficult

  1140. because every

  1141. day,

  1142. every day

  1143. I'm

  1144. influenced

  1145. by myself.

  1146. My own

  1147. flesh tells

  1148. me,

  1149. the world

  1150. tells me,

  1151. Jeremy,

  1152. you need

  1153. to be

  1154. praying

  1155. for your

  1156. own kingdom.

  1157. If you're

  1158. not praying

  1159. for it,

  1160. no one

  1161. else is

  1162. going to

  1163. be praying

  1164. for your

  1165. kingdom.

  1166. It's by

  1167. definition

  1168. my own

  1169. kingdom.

  1170. If I

  1171. don't

  1172. seek

  1173. my own

  1174. kingdom,

  1175. I'll

  1176. miss

  1177. out.

  1178. You know,

  1179. I'll

  1180. be

  1181. picking up

  1182. books

  1183. after

  1184. people

  1185. and I'll

  1186. be kind

  1187. of in

  1188. the back

  1189. and

  1190. forgotten.

  1191. But by

  1192. God's

  1193. grace,

  1194. the Holy

  1195. Spirit

  1196. always

  1197. nudges

  1198. me back.

  1199. Brings

  1200. me back

  1201. to see

  1202. that

  1203. magnificent

  1204. picture

  1205. of God's

  1206. kingdom.

  1207. I can

  1208. just see

  1209. it,

  1210. that

  1211. prosperity,

  1212. that

  1213. wholeness,

  1214. that

  1215. just all

  1216. encompassing

  1217. peace

  1218. that we

  1219. look forward

  1220. to.

  1221. And I

  1222. see those

  1223. glimpses in

  1224. my own

  1225. life and I

  1226. see those

  1227. glimpses in

  1228. my family and

  1229. in this

  1230. church.

  1231. church.

  1232. And God

  1233. reminds me

  1234. of that

  1235. kingdom of

  1236. true prosperity

  1237. and peace

  1238. and I can

  1239. continue to

  1240. surrender the

  1241. things I've

  1242. been holding

  1243. on to.

  1244. I can

  1245. continue to

  1246. pray for

  1247. his kingdom

  1248. to come.

  1249. And guys,

  1250. I know,

  1251. I know there

  1252. are serious

  1253. things.

  1254. There are

  1255. things that,

  1256. there are

  1257. genuine things

  1258. that burden

  1259. us.

  1260. And I'm

  1261. not making

  1262. light of

  1263. those things.

  1264. There's

  1265. hardships in

  1266. this world,

  1267. there's

  1268. tribulation

  1269. in this

  1270. world.

  1271. I know

  1272. that.

  1273. I've seen

  1274. it.

  1275. I've

  1276. experienced

  1277. it.

  1278. And it's

  1279. not important

  1280. that I

  1281. know.

  1282. What's

  1283. important is

  1284. God,

  1285. your heavenly

  1286. father,

  1287. knows those

  1288. hardships.

  1289. And that's

  1290. why our

  1291. Lord Jesus

  1292. Christ could

  1293. say right

  1294. before the

  1295. Lord's

  1296. prayer,

  1297. he says,

  1298. your heavenly

  1299. father already

  1300. knows your

  1301. needs before

  1302. you even

  1303. pray.

  1304. He knows

  1305. all that

  1306. you actually

  1307. need.

  1308. So he's

  1309. telling you,

  1310. he's telling

  1311. me,

  1312. surrender

  1313. those anxieties,

  1314. surrender

  1315. your kingdoms.

  1316. You know,

  1317. when you wake

  1318. up every

  1319. morning,

  1320. if you wake

  1321. up every

  1322. morning to

  1323. the reality

  1324. of that

  1325. kingdom,

  1326. that image,

  1327. that visual,

  1328. that reality

  1329. of the

  1330. kingdom of

  1331. God,

  1332. if you

  1333. wake up

  1334. each

  1335. morning to

  1336. that,

  1337. you just

  1338. begin to

  1339. get transported

  1340. to this

  1341. whole new

  1342. reality,

  1343. this whole

  1344. new paradigm.

  1345. You have

  1346. this clear

  1347. idea,

  1348. this sense

  1349. that your

  1350. heavenly

  1351. father has

  1352. a kingdom,

  1353. his perfect,

  1354. glorious kingdom

  1355. waiting for

  1356. you,

  1357. and he's

  1358. bringing it

  1359. to you.

  1360. And that's

  1361. how you start

  1362. your morning.

  1363. that's what

  1364. you live

  1365. in light

  1366. of every

  1367. single

  1368. moment.

  1369. That security,

  1370. that promise

  1371. that God

  1372. will restore

  1373. everything.

  1374. And if that

  1375. is our

  1376. kingdom,

  1377. if that

  1378. is our

  1379. starting point

  1380. every single

  1381. day,

  1382. guys,

  1383. it's inevitable.

  1384. It's inevitable.

  1385. We'll stop

  1386. worrying about

  1387. our own

  1388. kingdoms.

  1389. because you're

  1390. so securely

  1391. resting in

  1392. that promise.

  1393. You're so

  1394. securely

  1395. resting,

  1396. and you

  1397. get your

  1398. head,

  1399. you take

  1400. your head

  1401. outside of

  1402. your own

  1403. kingdom,

  1404. outside of

  1405. your own

  1406. Friday night

  1407. rituals.

  1408. You take

  1409. your head

  1410. out of

  1411. that,

  1412. and you

  1413. look around

  1414. you,

  1415. and you

  1416. just become

  1417. so gloriously

  1418. consumed in

  1419. the youth

  1420. ministry,

  1421. and reaching

  1422. the poor,

  1423. and the

  1424. brokenness you

  1425. see in your

  1426. classrooms,

  1427. and your

  1428. lecture halls,

  1429. and your

  1430. libraries,

  1431. and your

  1432. workplaces.

  1433. And that

  1434. becomes such

  1435. a beautiful

  1436. experience of

  1437. God's love,

  1438. because it's

  1439. just channeling

  1440. through you,

  1441. and you just

  1442. stop worrying

  1443. about your

  1444. own kingdoms.

  1445. You start to

  1446. see what's

  1447. truly important

  1448. to the kingdom

  1449. of God,

  1450. the marginalized,

  1451. the weak,

  1452. the lonely,

  1453. the people who

  1454. don't know

  1455. that they have

  1456. a heavenly

  1457. father,

  1458. that's preparing

  1459. that kingdom

  1460. for them.

  1461. They don't

  1462. know that.

  1463. They have

  1464. this amazing

  1465. news that's

  1466. out there,

  1467. but they

  1468. don't know

  1469. it.

  1470. You begin

  1471. to see

  1472. those things.

  1473. You begin

  1474. to see

  1475. the places

  1476. in your

  1477. life where

  1478. God wants

  1479. you to

  1480. bring

  1481. restoration

  1482. to.

  1483. And when

  1484. you begin

  1485. to see

  1486. these

  1487. different

  1488. situations

  1489. situations

  1490. and

  1491. circumstances,

  1492. your

  1493. instinctive

  1494. response

  1495. is to

  1496. pray,

  1497. how can

  1498. your

  1499. kingdom

  1500. come

  1501. in this

  1502. situation,

  1503. in this

  1504. situation,

  1505. in this

  1506. situation?

  1507. You just

  1508. begin to

  1509. think that

  1510. way because

  1511. you're not

  1512. worried about

  1513. your own

  1514. kingdom.

  1515. And not

  1516. only do you

  1517. pray,

  1518. God,

  1519. your kingdom

  1520. come in

  1521. this situation,

  1522. you actually

  1523. are part of

  1524. answering that

  1525. prayer.

  1526. You act

  1527. in response

  1528. to what

  1529. you care

  1530. about.

  1531. You think,

  1532. what can I

  1533. do about

  1534. it?

  1535. In the

  1536. book of

  1537. Revelation,

  1538. at the end

  1539. of the

  1540. Bible,

  1541. at the end

  1542. of the

  1543. age,

  1544. it says

  1545. that we'll

  1546. hear this

  1547. proclamation.

  1548. It's from

  1549. Revelation

    Revelation 11 chapter mention

  1550. chapter 11.

  1551. It says,

  1552. the kingdom

  1553. of the world

  1554. has become

  1555. the kingdom

  1556. of the

  1557. Lord.

  1558. I think we

  1559. have it

  1560. on the

  1561. screen there.

  1562. The kingdom

  1563. of the world

  1564. has become

  1565. the kingdom

  1566. of our

  1567. Lord and

  1568. of his

  1569. Christ.

  1570. He shall

  1571. reign forever

  1572. and ever.

  1573. That's the

  1574. picture I

  1575. want to leave

  1576. you with.

  1577. That's the

  1578. picture that

  1579. I want,

  1580. I think God

  1581. wants us to

  1582. remember every

  1583. day.

  1584. that our

  1585. calling is

  1586. to look to

  1587. that every

  1588. day.

  1589. Our

  1590. calling,

  1591. watermark,

  1592. is to be a

  1593. part of that.

  1594. To be a

  1595. part of the

  1596. kingdom of the

  1597. world becoming

  1598. the kingdom of

  1599. our Lord Jesus

  1600. Christ.

  1601. Let me pray

  1602. for us.

  1603. God,

1604. help us to be a

  1605. heart of that

  1606. Lord.

  1607. Help us to

  1608. see and

  1609. experience and

  1610. live out and

  1611. rest in the

  1612. truth of that

  1613. reality.

  1614. No weeping,

  1615. no hurt,

  1616. no pain,

  1617. but ultimate

  1618. prosperity,

  1619. ultimate peace

  1620. and truth and

  1621. love, Lord,

  1622. in the kingdom

  1623. of God.

  1624. God, I pray

  1625. that whatever

  1626. it is that

  1627. you want us

  1628. to surrender,

  1629. to give to

  1630. you,

  1631. whatever is

  1632. my kingdom

  1633. today,

  1634. Lord, shift

  1635. that in our

  1636. hearts to

  1637. your kingdom.

  1638. God, help

  1639. me, help

  1640. us live so

  1641. radically because

  1642. we know that

  1643. we do not

  1644. live for our

  1645. kingdoms, for

  1646. this kingdom,

  1647. Lord.

  1648. Whatever it

  1649. is, Lord, you

  1650. want us to

  1651. surrender to

  1652. your Lord, I

  1653. pray that your

  1654. spirit would

  1655. prompt us right

  1656. now, that we

  1657. would see the

  1658. beauty, the

  1659. majesty of that

  1660. eternal kingdom

  1661. and we would

  1662. live in light of

  1663. that, God.

  1664. God, I pray

  1665. for our church,

  1666. God, I pray

  1667. that you would

  1668. just mobilize

  1669. us to see

  1670. beyond these

  1671. walls, to see

  1672. beyond our

  1673. concerns, God,

  1674. and see this

  1675. city, see the

  1676. brokenness, God,

  1677. and to desire

  1678. your kingdom to

  1679. break in to the

  1680. brokenness, to

  1681. heal, to

  1682. restore.

  1683. God, whatever

  1684. it is, God, that

  1685. is holding us

  1686. back, Lord, I

  1687. pray that right

  1688. now we would

  1689. see that you

  1690. hold us in a

  1691. new reality, you

  1692. hold us in this

  1693. reality that there

  1694. is an eternal

  1695. kingdom waiting

  1696. for us, Lord.

  1697. And we can say

  1698. for eternity,

  1699. Lord, we want

  1700. to sing for you,

  1701. we want to

  1702. worship you.

  1703. Amen.

  1704. In the name of

  1705. precious Lord,

  1706. Savior, Jesus, I

  1707. pray.

  1708. Amen.
