  1. Father, we ask that you would gently but deeply pour out your Holy Spirit upon us.

  2. Pour out your Holy Spirit upon us.

  3. We ask, Father, that as we hear your word and we think about your word,

  4. that it might enter deeply into our minds, our hearts, our wills, our souls, our bodies,

  5. and that, Father, you would grow us into disciples of Jesus,

  6. gripped by the gospel who live for your glory.

  7. And we ask, Father, that you would pour out your Holy Spirit upon us as a church.

  8. Father, pour out your Holy Spirit upon us and build us into a prayerful church,

  9. a Bible-teaching church, a church which has received the gospel,

  10. is grounded on the gospel, is shaped by the gospel,

  11. and shares the gospel with a heart for the city and a heart for the whole world.

  12. And this we ask in the name of Jesus, your Son and the only Savior. Amen.

  13. Please be seated.

  14. Shalom from Jerusalem.

  15. Shalom.

  16. Shalom.

  17. It's wonderful to be here.

  18. And I bring you a blessing and a greeting from your brothers and sisters in the Messiah from Jerusalem.

  19. Hopefully, as we go through the text, also some good news from the Middle East.

  20. Not always the bad news.

  21. I'd like to start by saying that having studied in Jerusalem and having lived there for 17 years,

  22. I understand a little bit about, not to be an expert, but a little bit about the Hebrew mind.

  23. And the Hebrew mind, the Jewish mind, the Middle Eastern mindset, is it loves mystery.

  24. It loves mystery.

  25. And the Bible is mysterious.

  26. And the Western mind, that is sometimes called the Greek thinking mind, we actually don't like mystery.

  27. We like to solve everything.

  28. And so when we watch a murder mystery, we watch a cop show, you have to catch the killer.

  29. At the end of the 45 minutes, you better know who done it.

  30. And if you don't, we're going to call the TV company, we're going to complain.

  31. We're going to tell them, you did not catch the killer and I can't sleep tonight until I know what's going on.

  32. But the Jewish mind can actually dwell on a mystery for thousands of years.

  33. Sometimes they allow the mystery to play out over time.

  34. King David says, I meditate on your word day and night.

  35. I don't solve it.

  36. Sometimes the mystery unravels thousands of years later.

  37. And you can see that in our passage this morning, which is a great passage.

  38. Reverend George mentioned that the gospel writers, they deliberately choose the words that they use

  39. and they deliberately put the order of the miracles in a particular order to tell us something.

  40. And you can also see that Jesus indeed starts with a question.

  41. That is the way you actually teach in the Middle East.

  42. There's a rabbinical proverb that says,

  43. you're closer to God when you're asking questions than when you think you have answers.

  44. Because if we answered this book, if we knew everything, what would we do?

  45. We'll close it.

  46. Put it on the shelf.

  47. I understand the Bible.

  48. Great book.

  49. Now on to something else.

  50. Let's go through the Harry Potter series.

  51. But the Bible is mysterious.

  52. And I read it.

  53. And I search it.

  54. And I look for the mysteries that are contained inside.

  55. And then my son will do the same thing.

  56. And his son will, if the Lord parries.

  57. And that's why this book is alive.

  58. And it never finishes.

  59. And you can see that when Jesus is running around gathering his disciples,

  60. as he passes, one of them says,

  61. look, the Lamb of God.

  62. And straight away, none of the other disciples go,

  63. the Lamb of God?

  64. What's that about?

  65. The guy said he was a door.

  66. He was a shepherd.

  67. He's a sheep.

  68. Where's this Lamb of God business?

  69. The Lamb of God is a Jewish term.

  70. And it's one of those mysteries that they've been pondering

  71. ever since the book of Genesis.

  72. Because you see, when Isaac and Abraham are going up the mountain,

  73. what are they not carrying?

  74. A lamb.

  75. And Isaac even turns to his father and says,

  76. you know, Dad, I see the knife,

  77. and I see the wood,

  78. and I see the fire,

  79. but I don't see the Lamb.

  80. Where's the Lamb?

  81. And what does his father say?

  82. The Lord will provide a lamb.

  83. And does God provide a lamb?

  84. No.

  85. No.

  86. No.

  87. He provides a ram.

  88. But if you're Jewish,

  89. and you know this is the Word of God,

  90. this is the Holy Bible,

  91. so you read and you said,

  92. no, wait a second,

  93. Abraham said that God will provide a lamb.

  94. So what are we waiting for?

  95. We're waiting for the Lamb of God.

  96. So when you see the Messiah,

  97. you go, that's the Lamb of God.

  98. And it's a code word.

  99. It tells you a lot more than just a few words of the Lamb of God.

  100. So when Jesus is calling his disciples,

  101. one of my favorite little calls is Nathaniel's.

  102. Because Nathaniel is,

  103. what's Nathaniel doing?

  104. Sitting under a fig tree, right?

  105. And there's Jesus,

  106. and he meets Nathaniel,

  107. and he says,

  108. this is an Israelite in whom there is nothing false.

  109. That doesn't mean that a guy doesn't tell lies.

  110. What that means is this guy is a true Israelite bearing good fruit.

  111. He is studying,

  112. and his life is mimicking his life.

  113. He's not a false student.

  114. He's a real student.

  115. Remember, that's actually the mission of Yeshua, Jesus.

  116. He says,

  117. go into the world and make disciples.

  118. He doesn't say,

  119. go out in the world and get them saved.

  120. Salvation is actually implied.

  121. When you become a student of Jesus,

  122. when you study the Gospels themselves,

  123. you'll realize what the Gospel is,

  124. which is,

  125. that the Messiah rose from the dead.

  126. That's the Gospel in one line.

  127. The Messiah rose from the dead.

  128. Now, when Nathaniel meets him,

  129. and he says,

  130. well, how do you know me?

  131. He says,

  132. I saw you while you were under a fig tree.

  133. And then straight away,

  134. Nathaniel goes,

  135. you are the Son of God.

  136. You're the King of Israel.

  137. And you go,

  138. wow,

  139. that's amazing.

  140. Because it took Peter three and a half years

  141. to get to that conclusion.

  142. He had to have three and a half years with Jesus.

  143. And finally,

  144. when he's up in the north of the Galilee,

  145. at Caesarea Philippi,

  146. and Yeshua asks him,

  147. so who do you think I am?

  148. And he says,

  149. you are the Messiah.

  150. You're the Son of the Living God.

  151. You know,

  152. Jesus doesn't say,

  153. well, man,

  154. it took you long enough.

  155. Nathaniel died in 10 seconds.

  156. And he's like,

  157. well, yeah,

  158. you didn't tell me where I was sitting.

  159. Is this the way that the Messiah reveals himself?

  160. All he has to do is walk up and say,

  161. Daniel,

  162. I saw you while you were sitting in Starbucks.

  163. Joey,

  164. I saw you while you were shopping in Walmart.

  165. And the guy's going,

  166. wow,

  167. this guy's good.

  168. He must be God.

  169. You know?

  170. If that's all the Messiah has to do,

  171. if the only thing he has to do is say,

  172. where you were,

  173. and that makes you believe that he's the Messiah,

  174. man,

  175. he could have had all of Israel saved,

  176. couldn't he?

  177. He just wanders around telling people.

  178. But it's more than that.

  179. Remember,

  180. this book is a Jewish text.

  181. And so,

  182. it's full of Hebrewisms.

  183. Has anybody actually been to Bethsaida?

  184. It's a little fishing village

  185. in the north of the Galilee.

  186. It's actually not on the Galilee coast anymore,

  187. because the Galilee has actually receded down a bit.

  188. But it used to be a fishing village.

  189. And there's one thing it doesn't have in it.

  190. It doesn't have any fig trees.

  191. Because it's not about Nathaniel

  192. sitting under a literal fig tree.

  193. What is the first time in the Bible

  194. that we hear of a fig?

  195. When's the first time you actually hear of a fig in the Bible?

  196. In Genesis.

  197. Yeah, Adam and Eve.

  198. And you know the story.

  199. Adam bites the fruit.

  200. And, you know,

  201. it's a little...

  202. Oh my gosh!

  203. What's that doing there?

  204. I haven't seen that before.

  205. And in Jewish tradition,

  206. he's actually eating a fig.

  207. But then he realizes he's naked.

  208. He's got to cover himself.

  209. He's in shame.

  210. So he covers himself using a fig leaf.

  211. Little does he know

  212. that the sap of a fig

  213. is a skin irritant.

  214. Okay?

  215. It's going to hurt.

  216. And just imagine the Lord coming down

  217. and going,

  218. Adam, Adam, where are you?

  219. Oh man, I bet that's itchy.

  220. Let me...

  221. Here's some cream.

  222. You know?

  223. I'll help you out.

  224. I'll get some...

  225. You need some real skins.

  226. And so the first time

  227. you actually see a fig in the Bible,

  228. it's to cover.

  229. It's to cover your sin.

  230. It's to cover your nakedness.

  231. It's to cover your shame.

  232. It's to defend yourself

  233. from God.

  234. From looking bad

  235. in the presence of God.

  236. And so the whole...

  237. The image of a fig

  238. became something

  239. that covered you,

  240. sheltered you,

  241. protected you,

  242. and nurtured you,

  243. and defended you.

  244. And what defended

  245. the Jewish people?

  246. The Torah.

  247. The Torah that the...

  248. Well, we call the law,

  249. but in Hebrew,

  250. Torah,

  251. laharat,

  252. from the verb

  253. to teach

  254. or to instruct.

  255. The instructions of God.

  256. The teaching of God.

  257. That is what defended you.

  258. If you followed

  259. the teachings of the Lord,

  260. if you found yourself

  261. a good rabbi

  262. who would actually

  263. teach you the Bible properly,

  264. then you would put

  265. that Bible into practice

  266. and you would produce fruit.

  267. When the Messiah

  268. is walking into the temple,

  269. on his way

  270. into Jerusalem,

  271. he encounters

  272. a fig tree.

  273. and he walks up to it.

  274. And what's he looking for?

  275. He's looking for fruit.

  276. But does he find any?

  277. No, he doesn't.

  278. So what does he do?

  279. Pow!

  280. Right?

  281. Curses the fig tree.

  282. And then the thing

  283. withers and dies.

  284. But the gospel writers

  285. are pretty clear

  286. to note

  287. that they say

  288. it was not

  289. the season for figs.

  290. So what is Jesus

  291. not going to find

  292. on the tree?

  293. Fruit.

  294. Fruit.

  295. So it's not

  296. the tree's fault

  297. that there's no fruit,

  298. is it?

  299. I mean,

  300. you don't go

  301. at the beginning

  302. of the season,

  303. where are my apples?

  304. Oh, there's no apples?

  305. Okay, rip everything up.

  306. Start again.

  307. It's not about

  308. Jesus

  309. just deciding

  310. he's hungry one day

  311. and going,

  312. wow, there's no food here.

  313. Now I'm really annoyed.

  314. You should have known

  315. I was hungry.

  316. What he's doing,

  317. he's making a statement

  318. by saying,

  319. I'm walking into the temple.

  320. I'm going to be

  321. asking questions

  322. of the temple teachers.

  323. I'm going to be

  324. looking at their Torah.

  325. I'm going to be

  326. looking at their fruit.

  327. What have they produced?

  328. They have produced

  329. no fruit.

  330. And so,

  331. bang,

  332. it's gone.

  333. And so,

  334. the Torah

  335. was the covering.

  336. So what is Nathaniel doing?

  337. He's not sitting

  338. under a tree.

  339. He's studying

  340. the Bible.

  341. It says,

  342. we have found

  343. the one

  344. Moses wrote about

  345. in the law

  346. and about whom

  347. the prophets speak.

  348. So what Nathaniel's doing,

  349. he was probably

  350. studying the Bible.

  351. Which verses

  352. is he studying?

  353. There are so many

  354. to choose from.

  355. And

  356. in Israel,

  357. I've had the

  358. privilege

  359. of working

  360. with the oldest

  361. Protestant church

  362. in the Middle East.

  363. That's what Christ Church is.

  364. It's actually

  365. an Anglican mission

  366. started by a guy

  367. called William Wilberforce.

  368. And

  369. I lead

  370. a small team

  371. of Jewish believers

  372. in Jesus

  373. and we share

  374. the gospel

  375. with

  376. close to

  377. 25,000 Israelis

  378. every year.

  379. And Israelis

  380. would come

  381. to church.

  382. They come to us.

  383. We don't stand

  384. on the street corner.

  385. They come to us.

  386. And then we have

  387. the opportunity

  388. to share.

  389. And

  390. there are many

  391. scriptures

  392. in the Torah

  393. with which to search

  394. and look

  395. for the Messiah.

  396. And often

  397. our accusation

  398. that they accuse us

  399. is they say,

  400. but you

  401. Christians,

  402. you guys worship

  403. three gods.

  404. I know you do.

  405. How many gods

  406. do we worship?

  407. We worship one.

  408. Yes,

  409. it's mysterious.

  410. It's a mystery.

  411. But that mystery,

  412. and I'm so glad

  413. Trinity Sunday

  414. only comes around

  415. once a year.

  416. Okay?

  417. Because you

  418. preach on the Trinity

  419. for more than five minutes,

  420. you're going into heresy

  421. by about now.

  422. It's a mystery.

  423. And we've had to

  424. walk this mystery

  425. out for 2,000 years now.

  426. But you know what?

  427. It's in the text.

  428. And Nathaniel

  429. would have been

  430. searching for it.

  431. And Jesus

  432. would have been

  433. looking straight

  434. out of the Bible

  435. right back at him.

  436. And so

  437. we say to these

  438. Israelis who come

  439. to us,

  440. we don't worship

  441. three gods.

  442. I know it's a mystery,

  443. but allow me

  444. to share a passage

  445. and we'll see.

  446. We'll go on

  447. a journey together.

  448. So we go to Isaiah

  449. and in chapter 48,

  450. verse 12,

  451. we read,

  452. Shema alai Yaakov

  453. ve'Yisrael mikrei.

  454. Shema,

  455. that's a loaded

  456. Hebrew word.

  457. Okay?

  458. If you hear the word

  459. Shema,

  460. that's like

  461. the oath

  462. of allegiance.

  463. Shema Yisrael

  464. Adonai Eloheinu

  465. Adonai Echad,

  466. hear O Israel,

  467. the Lord our God,

  468. the Lord is one.

  469. So when you hear

  470. the word Shema,

  471. you sit up,

  472. pay attention,

  473. because the

  474. following sentences

  475. are loaded.

  476. The Hebrew language

  477. is an oral language.

  478. The Bible was

  479. an oral culture.

  480. You listened

  481. to the stories.

  482. Listen to me,

  483. Jacob.

  484. And I like

  485. the way God

  486. announces himself

  487. as the God

  488. of Jacob.

  489. Because it tells you

  490. something about your God.

  491. Like,

  492. what's Jacob's character

  493. in the Bible?

  494. What's he like?

  495. Jacob is a...

  496. He's a deceiver.

  497. He's an usurper.

  498. He tricks his father.

  499. He tricks his brother

  500. out of a birthright.

  501. And not only that,

  502. he's a coward.

  503. Every time you read

  504. in the Bible

  505. about Jacob,

  506. usually the next sentence

  507. is,

  508. and he was afraid.

  509. He's constantly fearful.

  510. So even after

  511. he usurps

  512. and deceives

  513. his family,

  514. he then runs.

  515. He runs away.

  516. And even when

  517. he's coming back

  518. to make restitution,

  519. and he knows

  520. he's going to have

  521. to meet Esau,

  522. this guy is so brave

  523. that he sends

  524. the women and children

  525. in front.

  526. Okay?

  527. This is our hero type.

  528. And then God

  529. comes along and says,

  530. I am the God

  531. of Jacob.

  532. God,

  533. who is so mighty

  534. and so powerful,

  535. is also still

  536. so merciful

  537. and so humble

  538. himself,

  539. even though he himself

  540. wraps himself

  541. in pride,

  542. is to identify himself

  543. as the God of Jacob.

  544. And so here,

  545. listen to me,

  546. Jacob,

  547. and Israel,

  548. whom I have named.

  549. Anihu,

  550. Ani Roshonaf,

  551. Ani Achoron,

  552. I am the first

  553. and I am the last.

  554. So who said

  555. he was the first

  556. and the last?

  557. Who did?

  558. God.

  559. Well,

  560. at the moment,

  561. the prophet

  562. has just said,

  563. I am the first

  564. and I am the last.

  565. But we don't know

  566. who that is yet.

  567. So just pretend

  568. your Israelis

  569. for a second

  570. and I ask you,

  571. who's the first

  572. and the last?

  573. I'm not sure.

  574. Next sentence,

  575. Af Yavdei Aretz

  576. V'Yemeni T'Tachash

  577. and my hand

  578. has laid the foundations

  579. of the earth

  580. and my right hand

  581. has stretched out

  582. the heavens

  583. or opened them up.

  584. Ani Karei Alehem

  585. V'Yachadu Yachadu

  586. When I call them,

  587. they stand up.

  588. So who made the heavens

  589. and the earth?

  590. God.

  591. So you're right.

  592. The first and the last

  593. is God.

  594. Excellent.

  595. In verse 16,

  596. Kiyavu Alai

  597. Now come close to me.

  598. Shmauzot

  599. Now when you have

  600. the word Shmau

  601. in two very close

  602. sentences together,

  603. in Hebrew exegesis,

  604. you actually link

  605. those two verses together.

  606. Okay?

  607. That's the way rabbis do it.

  608. That's the way Jesus does it

  609. in Luke 4.

  610. So come close to me

  611. and listen to this.

  612. Not since the beginning

  613. have I spoken in secret.

  614. Now devar,

  615. the word to speak,

  616. is also the word for word.

  617. Devar.

  618. It's also the word for thing.

  619. So the word

  620. is a thing.

  621. Me'et haita shamani

  622. Me'et

  623. That's a biblical Hebrew time word.

  624. You don't use it

  625. in modern Hebrew anymore.

  626. It literally means

  627. since the beginning.

  628. Since the beginning of time.

  629. Haita shamani

  630. I was there.

  631. So somebody was there

  632. since the beginning of time.

  633. Va'ata

  634. Now that's another

  635. biblical Hebrew time word

  636. which means

  637. right now.

  638. As in

  639. right now.

  640. Right now and right now.

  641. So since the beginning of time

  642. until

  643. right now.

  644. Whoever the first

  645. and the last is,

  646. whoever made the heavens

  647. and the earth,

  648. he is

  649. timeless.

  650. He is God.

  651. But then it says,

  652. Adonai

  653. Hashem

  654. Adonai

  655. Yahweh

  656. Shalachani

  657. Veruach

  658. The Lord God

  659. God

  660. The Lord God

  661. The Lord God

  662. The Lord God

  663. But we just said

  664. that the first

  665. and the last

  666. who made the heavens

  667. and the earth

  668. who was there

  669. in the beginning

  670. of the time

  671. was God,

  672. didn't we?

  673. And now the prophet

  674. says,

  675. The Lord God

  676. sends me

  677. with his spirit.

  678. So,

  679. looking at this text,

  680. it's mysterious.

  681. who is the first

  682. and the last?

  683. Who is this

  684. very powerful person

  685. who makes the heavens

  686. and the earth?

  687. And the gospel

  688. writer of John,

  689. when he starts

  690. the gospel,

  691. he begins by saying,

  692. In the beginning

  693. was the

  694. word,

  695. the davar,

  696. which is the word,

  697. which is also a thing.

  698. In the beginning

  699. was the word,

  700. and the word was

  701. was with God,

  702. and the word

  703. was God,

  704. and nothing was made

  705. without the word.

  706. The gospel of John

  707. is just

  708. quoting again

  709. Isaiah 48.

  710. It's playing out

  711. the mystery

  712. that since the prophet

  713. Isaiah,

  714. you would read

  715. and go,

  716. No, I don't get it,

  717. but I'm looking

  718. for this person.

  719. There's somebody here,

  720. and Nathaniel's

  721. doing that.

  722. Nathaniel is looking

  723. for this person,

  724. and then what Yeshua

  725. says,

  726. Jesus,

  727. when he sees him,

  728. he says,

  729. I know you,

  730. because I was

  731. looking back.

  732. When you were

  733. looking for me,

  734. I was looking back,

  735. and he says,

  736. You are

  737. the Son of God.

  738. You are the King

  739. of Israel,

  740. and he gets it.

  741. He gets it.

  742. And then Jesus says,

  743. Wow,

  744. you believe so fast?

  745. That's great.

  746. You're going to see

  747. even better things

  748. than this.

  749. You're going to see

  750. even better.

  751. In fact,

  752. Jesus even tells

  753. his disciples

  754. that we're going

  755. to do better things

  756. than Jesus.

  757. We're going to do

  758. greater things

  759. than Jesus.

  760. Did we?

  761. Yes.

  762. We did,

  763. but probably not

  764. in the ways

  765. we thought.

  766. You know,

  767. Jesus healed people.

  768. He did.

  769. Everywhere he went,

  770. healed people.

  771. I don't know

  772. how many healed,

  773. maybe a couple

  774. of thousand.

  775. What did the church do?

  776. Built hospitals

  777. all over the world.

  778. Fought back the plague

  779. in multiple countries.

  780. Jesus taught people.

  781. Jesus taught disciples.

  782. Around about 120,

  783. when you get to

  784. the book of Acts.

  785. What did the church do?

  786. It built schools

  787. everywhere,

  788. and it educated

  789. the world.

  790. One of the things

  791. that the Anglican Mission,

  792. Christ Church,

  793. did,

  794. that I think is the best

  795. thing we ever did

  796. in our history

  797. in Jerusalem,

  798. is we built

  799. a school for girls.

  800. What's the value

  801. of a woman

  802. in the Middle East

  803. in the 1800s?

  804. Not much.

  805. Right?

  806. In Islam,

  807. how many women

  808. can I have, guys?

  809. Now, four.

  810. Right?

  811. And if I don't like one,

  812. I'm going to divorce one.

  813. I'm going to get another one.

  814. Okay?

  815. In Judaism,

  816. how many wives

  817. can I have?

  818. That's what everybody says,

  819. that actually,

  820. there's no number.

  821. And so,

  822. what the rabbis do

  823. is they go,

  824. wow,

  825. why is there no number?

  826. This would make it

  827. real easy for us.

  828. And so,

  829. they look through the Bible

  830. to see a man

  831. after God's own heart.

  832. How many wives

  833. does King David have?

  834. He has 18.

  835. Okay?

  836. So,

  837. there's your magical number.

  838. Not that I'm saying

  839. Jews ever had 18 wives.

  840. They didn't.

  841. Okay?

  842. But that was their

  843. magical number.

  844. And again,

  845. it tells you something

  846. about God.

  847. Because out of which wife

  848. does God bring

  849. the Messiah in?

  850. The last one.

  851. Right?

  852. Number 18.

  853. Bathsheba is

  854. wife number 18

  855. of David.

  856. Now,

  857. normally,

  858. in my little Western mind,

  859. I would say,

  860. excuse me,

  861. but if we're going to have

  862. a Davidic king around here,

  863. we need to have

  864. the wife number one.

  865. That's the right thing to do.

  866. And plus,

  867. she's an actual princess.

  868. She's actually

  869. the daughter of King Saul.

  870. So,

  871. you know,

  872. you want to have

  873. a messianic king,

  874. let's actually go

  875. through the princess.

  876. But what God does

  877. is he says,

  878. actually,

  879. the wife that everybody

  880. doesn't like,

  881. the thing that's all bad,

  882. everything that's wrong,

  883. the adultery,

  884. the murder,

  885. the lying,

  886. the stealing,

  887. everything that's wrong,

  888. I can redeem that.

  889. I can make it better.

  890. I can reach down

  891. into darkness

  892. and turn it into light.

  893. It shows you once again

  894. what God continues to do.

  895. And so,

  896. the Messiah comes

  897. from her.

  898. In Israel,

  899. in the 1800s,

  900. women weren't worth much.

  901. So,

  902. what did the mission do?

  903. School for girls.

  904. Arabs went,

  905. Jews went,

  906. Turks went,

  907. Egyptians went,

  908. Armenians went.

  909. And because the British

  910. are so meticulous

  911. about record keeping,

  912. okay,

  913. if you went to the hospital

  914. and took a band-aid,

  915. they would write that down.

  916. Okay,

  917. we have these great records

  918. in our church library

  919. about how many band-aids

  920. and yards of linen

  921. and drops of iodine

  922. we used.

  923. But we also have

  924. all the baptismal records

  925. as well.

  926. And 25% of all the girls

  927. that went to that school

  928. became believers in Jesus.

  929. So,

  930. wow,

  931. just one little school

  932. and all these girls

  933. coming to faith

  934. as well as getting educated.

  935. But what happened is,

  936. is there was a reaction.

  937. And if,

  938. if,

  939. if you've got a daughter,

  940. you don't want to send her

  941. to the mission,

  942. she might become a believer

  943. in Jesus.

  944. That's terrible.

  945. So,

  946. what do you have to do?

  947. Build your own school

  948. for girls.

  949. So,

  950. the reaction is,

  951. the Arabs built schools

  952. for girls,

  953. the Jewish people

  954. built schools for girls,

  955. the Turks built schools

  956. for girls.

  957. We changed the face

  958. of education

  959. in the Middle East

  960. just by doing that,

  961. that little thing.

  962. we have this little impact

  963. on,

  964. on,

  965. on,

  966. on the education

  967. of,

  968. of the Middle East.

  969. And people come to hear

  970. that story.

  971. So,

  972. we have the opportunity

  973. to continue to share.

  974. But here,

  975. Jesus is talking to

  976. Nathaniel

  977. and he says,

  978. listen,

  979. greater things

  980. you're going to do.

  981. And they did.

  982. And plus,

  983. you are going to see

  984. angels

  985. ascending and descending

  986. on the Son of Man.

  987. So,

  988. where do angels start?

  989. If,

  990. if you see angels

  991. ascending

  992. and descending,

  993. where do they start from?

  994. Here.

  995. See,

  996. in Jewish tradition,

  997. angels

  998. are here.

  999. They're right here.

  1000. In fact,

  1001. in Jewish tradition,

1002. every time you go off

  1003. to synagogue,

  1004. you actually come home

  1005. with angels.

  1006. They're everywhere.

  1007. Even the prophet Elijah

  1008. had to open up

  1009. the eyes of one

  1010. of his servants

  1011. and say,

  1012. just have a look

  1013. at how many

  1014. are with us

  1015. than actually against us.

  1016. They're right here.

  1017. We have

  1018. an incredible army

  1019. of people

  1020. surrounding us,

  1021. defending us,

  1022. shepherding us,

  1023. encouraging us.

  1024. We are most definitely

  1025. not alone.

  1026. And also,

  1027. the text is,

  1028. Jesus often identifies

1029. himself as the Son of Man.

  1030. Notice,

  1031. Nathaniel says,

1032. you're the Son of God.

  1033. And Jesus says,

1034. I'm the Son of Man.

  1035. Why doesn't he use

1036. the term Son of God?

  1037. Where do you get

1038. the term Son of God

  1039. from?

  1040. Well,

  1041. in Jewish tradition,

1042. the term Son of God

  1043. actually just denotes

  1044. a relationship.

  1045. And anybody

  1046. who has a relationship

  1047. with God

1048. is called a Son of God.

  1049. So,

  1050. Israel has a relationship

  1051. with God.

  1052. So,

  1053. it's called a Son of God.

  1054. Angels have a relationship

  1055. with God.

  1056. So,

  1057. they're called

  1058. the Son of God.

  1059. You have a relationship

  1060. with God.

  1061. So,

  1062. you are called

  1063. Sons and Daughters

  1064. of God.

  1065. So,

1066. if Jesus just walked up

  1067. and said,

  1068. hi,

1069. I am the Son of God,

  1070. then everybody goes,

  1071. yeah,

  1072. me too.

  1073. So,

  1074. Jesus says,

1075. I am the Son of Man.

  1076. Now,

  1077. that's also a strong

  1078. biblical,

  1079. prophetic

  1080. title.

  1081. Where do you hear

  1082. the Son of Man

  1083. term from?

1084. Which book of the Bible?

  1085. Daniel?

  1086. Daniel.

  1087. Daniel.

  1088. And it comes from

  1089. Daniel chapter 7,

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

1090. which is a fantastic passage.

1091. It's one of my favorites.

  1092. We often use it

  1093. in Israel

  1094. to show people

  1095. to read

  1096. that there's this

  1097. special person.

  1098. In Daniel chapter 7,

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  1099. in verse 9,

  1100. Daniel looks into heaven

  1101. and he sees,

  1102. he says,

  1103. I looked into heaven

  1104. and I saw thrones.

1105. And the Ancient of Days

  1106. came and he sat

  1107. on his throne

  1108. and his head

  1109. was like,

1110. it was white as wool

  1111. and his seat

  1112. was flaming with fire

  1113. and he's attended

  1114. by thousands

  1115. and ten thousands

  1116. and the books

  1117. are opened

  1118. and we're ready

  1119. to judge the world.

1120. And then this other guy

  1121. shows up

1122. called the Son of Man.

  1123. And all the world

  1124. actually worships him.

  1125. The Son of Man

  1126. is given authority

  1127. and a kingdom

  1128. and a dominion

  1129. and every tribe

  1130. and every tribe

  1131. will worship him.

  1132. It's like,

  1133. wow,

  1134. who is this

  1135. very powerful person?

  1136. And Yeshua,

  1137. Jesus,

  1138. comes along

  1139. and says,

1140. I am the Son of Man.

  1141. I am that person.

  1142. That's me.

  1143. And even death

  1144. is not going to

  1145. hold me still.

  1146. Remember the gospel.

  1147. Jesus rose

  1148. from the dead.

  1149. He is alive.

  1150. But most Jewish people

  1151. can't get past

  1152. the first sentence.

  1153. I looked into heaven

  1154. and I saw

  1155. thrones.

  1156. What's the problem?

  1157. How many thrones

  1158. should be in heaven?

  1159. One.

  1160. But Daniel says

1161. he looked and he saw two.

  1162. So who's sitting

  1163. on the other one?

1164. And so for a couple

  1165. of hundred years

  1166. before Jesus,

  1167. there's this big debate

  1168. going,

  1169. who is sitting

  1170. on the other throne?

  1171. And for Jesus,

  1172. it's him.

  1173. He is the one

1174. sitting on the other throne.

  1175. And in Israel,

  1176. when we share

  1177. these passages

  1178. with people,

  1179. it's kind of exciting.

  1180. Sometimes it's a bit

  1181. too challenging

  1182. and people

  1183. run away.

  1184. But sometimes

  1185. they do something

  1186. like this.

  1187. One day,

1188. we had an orthodox man

  1189. and his secular friend

  1190. come in to Christchurch

  1191. and we began

  1192. to share the history

  1193. of the mission.

  1194. We described

  1195. the building.

  1196. We described

  1197. the stained glass windows.

  1198. We talked about

  1199. the history

  1200. of our place

  1201. and the rise

  1202. of Messianic Judaism.

  1203. Because the number

  1204. of Jews in Israel

  1205. is increasing.

  1206. We've been in Israel

  1207. for 17 years

  1208. and in 17 years

  1209. we've watched

  1210. the number of Jews

  1211. who believe in Jesus

  1212. go from 15,000

  1213. to 22,000.

  1214. Which,

1215. when you do the math,

  1216. is a 46% increase.

  1217. Which is just awesome!

  1218. Because now

1219. we're running out of space.

  1220. So we're talking

  1221. to these guys

  1222. and we share

  1223. about who we are,

  1224. share a little

  1225. about the history

  1226. of Messianic Judaism,

  1227. share some of these

  1228. Bible passages

  1229. and then

  1230. the conversation finishes.

  1231. And everybody's

  1232. still standing there.

  1233. No one quite knows

  1234. how to leave.

  1235. So we're all

  1236. looking at each other.

  1237. It's getting

  1238. a little awkward now.

1239. And then the secular guy

  1240. leans in

  1241. and he says,

  1242. how do I

  1243. get saved?

  1244. We say,

  1245. the Messiah

  1246. rose from the dead.

  1247. Here's a New Testament.

  1248. Start reading.

  1249. Come and join us.

  1250. And the Rabbi guy,

  1251. the Orthodox guy

  1252. goes,

1253. can I get saved too?

  1254. Yes.

  1255. Yes, you can.

  1256. You can search

  1257. the Scriptures,

  1258. you can look

  1259. at those mysteries

1260. and you will find out

  1261. that the Messiah

1262. is sitting on the throne.

1263. That the Son of Man

  1264. is alive and well.

  1265. And God,

  1266. in His wisdom,

  1267. has been reaching out

  1268. and touching

  1269. Jewish people

  1270. and bringing them

  1271. to Himself.

  1272. And we have also

  1273. seen it

  1274. in the Muslim world.

  1275. When you turn

  1276. the TV on

  1277. and you look

  1278. at the Middle East,

  1279. it looks pretty dark,

  1280. doesn't it?

  1281. It looks horrible.

  1282. There's lots of violence.

  1283. And all of that

  1284. is true.

  1285. But God

  1286. is also working.

  1287. If He is sitting

  1288. on the throne,

1289. if He is in control,

  1290. if He is alive,

  1291. then He is working.

1292. If He is the King,

1293. then He is in control.

  1294. And at Christchurch,

  1295. we had a conference

  1296. where we wanted

  1297. to hear what God

  1298. was doing

  1299. amongst the Arabic peoples.

  1300. So we invited

  1301. Iranians

  1302. and Iraqis.

  1303. We invited Jordanians

  1304. and Syrians

  1305. and Lebanese.

  1306. We invited the Turks

  1307. and the Moroccans

  1308. and the Egyptians.

  1309. They all came

  1310. to Christchurch.

  1311. And they shared,

  1312. this is what God

  1313. is doing

  1314. in our countries.

  1315. And there was

  1316. this Kurdish man

  1317. called Ali Pektash.

  1318. He doesn't mind us

  1319. actually using

  1320. his name at all.

1321. And he used to be

  1322. a very staunch

  1323. Kurdish Muslim.

  1324. He actually used

1325. to work for the PKK.

1326. You heard of that group?

  1327. They blow up Turks.

  1328. Or currently,

  1329. now the Turks

  1330. are blowing them up.

1331. But as a good Muslim,

  1332. he needed to go

  1333. on the Hajj.

  1334. So he takes

  1335. a pilgrimage to Mecca.

1336. And while he's in Mecca

  1337. and he puts on

  1338. his little white robe

1339. and he's going to be

  1340. walking around the Kaaba,

  1341. he has a vision

  1342. of Jesus.

  1343. The first time

  1344. he has a vision

  1345. of Jesus,

  1346. he's like,

  1347. wow,

  1348. I think I haven't

  1349. had enough water

  1350. to drink.

  1351. I'll just keep going.

  1352. I'm a good Muslim.

  1353. But Jesus kept

  1354. coming back to him.

  1355. Kept coming back

  1356. to him.

  1357. He wouldn't stop.

  1358. So the third time

  1359. Jesus shows up,

  1360. he says,

  1361. okay,

  1362. who are you?

  1363. And he becomes

  1364. a follower

  1365. of the Messiah.

  1366. And then he goes

  1367. back to Kurdistan

  1368. and in Kurdistan

  1369. they say,

  1370. hey,

  1371. Ali,

  1372. Hajji,

  1373. good to see you.

  1374. How is the Hajj?

  1375. And he goes,

  1376. oh,

  1377. it was great.

  1378. I became a Christian.

  1379. That doesn't normally

1380. happen when you're on the Hajj.

  1381. But now,

1382. instead of blowing Turks up,

  1383. he's working in Turkey

  1384. planting churches.

  1385. And that's the type

  1386. of Middle East

  1387. that we're actually

  1388. involved with.

  1389. Those are the types

  1390. of the good stories

  1391. that we actually hear.

  1392. God

  1393. is working.

  1394. The Son of Man

  1395. is alive.

  1396. And he is ruling

  1397. and reigning.

  1398. He is changing lives.

  1399. He is sitting

  1400. on the throne.

  1401. And we're not afraid.

  1402. Not anymore.

  1403. And that,

  1404. I have to say,

  1405. is good news.

  1406. Yes?

  1407. Very good news.

  1408. Brothers and sisters,

  1409. shalom from Jerusalem.

  1410. Amen.

  1411. Amen.

  1412. Maybe just before,

  1413. we're going to have

  1414. some intercessions,

  1415. but before that,

  1416. let's just stand for a moment.

1417. After the word is open

  1418. like that,

  1419. it's really appropriate

1420. for us just to pause

  1421. in prayer.

  1422. So let's just pause.

  1423. I'll have a moment

  1424. or so of silence

  1425. and I'll pray.

  1426. Amen.

  1427. Amen.

  1428. Amen.

  1429. Amen.

  1430. Amen.

  1431. Amen.

  1432. Amen.

  1433. Amen.

  1434. Amen.

  1435. Amen.

  1436. Amen.

  1437. Amen.

  1438. Amen.

  1439. Amen.

  1440. Amen.

  1441. Amen.

  1442. Amen.

  1443. Amen.

  1444. Amen.

  1445. Amen.

  1446. Amen.

  1447. Amen.

  1448. Amen.

  1449. Amen.

  1450. Amen.

  1451. Amen.

  1452. Amen.

  1453. Amen.

  1454. Amen.

  1455. Amen.

  1456. Amen.

  1457. Amen.

  1458. Amen.

  1459. Amen.

  1460. Amen.

  1461. Amen.

  1462. Amen.

  1463. Amen.

1464. sovereign today, that you are sovereign in Canada, that you are sovereign in the Middle East.

1465. And we thank you, Father, that when ideologies or cultures keep you out or try to keep you out,

1466. that Jesus comes in dreams. Father, we confess before you that we human beings cannot keep you

1467. out. We thank you, Father, for the work that you are doing amongst Muslims, bringing them to yourself.

1468. We thank you, Father, for the work in Jerusalem and for bringing people to yourself. We ask your

1469. blessing on Aaron and his team and Christ Church Jerusalem and CMJ. Father, may you use it in a

1470. mighty and powerful way to share the gospel with many Jewish and others in Jerusalem. May many come

1471. to a saving faith in Jesus through that work. And Father, we ask the same thing for ourselves.

1472. Father, may we be fruitful for your glory. May you so pour out your Holy Spirit upon us

1473. and so draw us close to King Jesus that you might use us to share the gospel not only in Ottawa,

1474. but beyond Ottawa to the ends of the earth. And all this we ask and thank in the name of Jesus,

1475. your Son and our Saviour. Amen.
