  1. My name's Chris, for those of you who don't know me.

  2. It's a beautiful morning outside, and welcome if you're new here.

  3. I feel like I'm six feet above contradiction here, so it's quite fun.

  4. Have you ever sat back and thought, why on earth did I do that?

  5. I bumped into an old friend a while back, and I hadn't seen him for a while,

  6. and we started talking, and for some reason we started getting on to our childhood.

  7. We started talking about the crazy things that we had done when we were children.

  8. He started on a story telling how he'd kind of had this dramatic escape from the police,

  9. and it was kind of, I don't know, somersaulted over a fence,

  10. and it was just this amazingly dramatic, exciting story.

  11. Then it went on to my turn, and I started talking about this story about

  12. I had started playing tennis when I shouldn't have done at school over the weekend,

  13. and after a while it just didn't sound particularly exciting.

  14. You know, wow, crazy childhood.

  15. And so I thought, okay, let's add a few kind of touches to this

  16. to make it a little bit more exciting.

  17. So the caretaker who asked us to leave the tennis court,

  18. he became someone who chased us down the road like shouting at us.

  19. And then the hole in the fence that we managed to get through,

  20. which actually we could stand up in and was huge,

  21. suddenly became this very small, tiny hole

  22. that we could only just squeeze through

  23. before he was about to grab us by the legs and catch us.

  24. And my friend was impressed.

  25. I went away.

  26. And as I was walking along,

  27. I had this battle inside of me thinking,

  28. did I lie?

  29. And I was thinking, well, it's kind of true.

  30. You know, there was a hole.

  31. There was a caretaker.

  32. You know, and maybe that hole was much smaller than I really thought.

  33. And you know, like the devil and the angel inside.

  34. You know, so I'm battling inside me,

  35. going on all this way for about 20 minutes.

  36. Okay, it's a long walk back.

  37. And then finally, I think I had a moment of honesty

  38. where I realized, actually, I think I lied.

  39. And then I thought, why did I do that?

  40. Why did I do that?

  41. And I realized I do the same thing at work.

  42. You know, I'm looking at some random YouTube video at work.

  43. I'm sure you would never do that.

  44. And someone comes past.

  45. And quickly, I minimize the screen

  46. and go back to looking as if I'm looking at my work email.

  47. And if someone asks me,

  48. oh, what were you looking at?

  49. I'll just say, oh, just some work stuff.

  50. You know, just some work stuff.

  51. And it's stupid because there isn't any strict rule in our office

  52. about, okay, you can't ever look at a YouTube video.

  53. But it's because I want to give the impression

  54. that I'm a hard worker.

  55. I want to be seen as something.

  56. I want to be recognized as something.

  57. So why, with a friend, do I feel the need to lie to them?

  58. Why do I feel the need to put up an image?

  59. Well, I think, on reflection,

  60. it's because I crave the approval of other people.

  61. And I have a strong conviction that lying is wrong.

  62. Integrity is very important to me.

  63. If somebody tells even a small lie to me,

  64. I will question their integrity

  65. and look down on them, maybe.

  66. But what I've realized is,

  67. over the last few months,

  68. is if you had asked me,

  69. do you lie,

  70. I'd only say, oh, very, very occasionally,

  71. not really very often.

  72. But I've realized that if my approval,

  73. if my recognition,

  74. if my sense of respect

  75. in front of other people's eyes is on the line,

  76. then I can turn into a compulsive liar.

  77. And it's because I want to maintain this image.

  78. And deep down in my heart,

  79. I'm like an orphan

  80. who wants other people's recognition

  81. because I've forgotten

  82. that I have a Father in Heaven

  83. who loves me,

  84. who accepts me,

  85. who delights in me.

  86. And I have to get someone else's approval

  87. because God's is not good enough for me.

  88. And I work for the church.

  89. So you can fire me if you like.

  90. And I'm sure none of you do that.

  91. But we're going through this series on prayer.

  92. We're kind of coming to the end of the series.

  93. And we've been saying that prayer

  94. is like a needy child

  95. calling out to their loving Heavenly Father

  96. in response to Him reaching down to them.

  97. Prayer is essentially a VIP access pass

  98. available only to family members

  99. into the presence of the King of all creation.

  100. It's been paid for with the blood of Jesus Christ.

  101. And if we trust in Him,

  102. we can enter into that relationship

  103. and call our King our Father.

  104. And we don't get that pass

  105. by queuing for hours to get a ticket.

  106. It's our Father who reached down to us in Christ

  107. and draws us to Himself.

  108. And prayer is an invitation

  109. to enjoy this newly bought relationship with Him

  110. and to find satisfaction in our Father.

  111. That is what prayer is about.

  112. And if you look in this prayer,

  113. in the Lord's Prayer,

  114. you see our enjoyment of God starts in worship.

  115. It says,

  116. Our Father, hallowed be your name.

  117. Holy be your name above all names.

  118. Because worship is your response

  119. to what you see as valuable

  120. and precious in your life.

  121. Whatever controls your heart

  122. is what will worship.

  123. Whatever consumes your thoughts,

  124. whatever directs your behavior,

  125. whatever in those everyday moments

  126. is shaping you,

  127. that is what you're worshiping.

  128. In that moment with my friend,

  129. I was worshiping the idol of approval.

  130. Because that was what was shaping my heart.

  131. And even though I could tell you

  132. with conviction that lying is wrong,

  133. the worship of my heart

  134. always directs my behavior

  135. more than what I think just in my head.

  136. Which is why the Lord's Prayer

  137. starts with worship,

  138. but it finishes with warfare.

  139. And this is what we're going to look at today.

  140. Because every day,

  141. I don't know if you realize it,

  142. but we're actually in a worship war.

  143. We're called to be lovers.

  144. Love God with all your heart,

  145. soul, mind, and strength.

  146. Love other people as yourself.

  147. Lovers of God.

  148. Lovers of others.

  149. And yet every day,

  150. we're in a battle for our affections

  151. from where we're going to place our love.

  152. It's a war for what's going to captivate you.

  153. It's a war for what's going to wrap you up.

  154. Is it yourself that's going to wrap you up,

  155. or is it you're going to find satisfaction in God?

  156. That's why we,

  157. as a needy child,

  158. need to be praying this prayer.

  159. Lead us not into temptation.

  160. Deliver us.

  161. Deliver us from evil.

  162. Deliver means rescue.

  163. I need rescuing in this war.

  164. So let's have a little look into

  165. this idea of temptation a little bit more.

  166. So we're going to look at what temptation is,

  167. how we get snared,

  168. and how we overcome.

  169. What temptation is,

  170. how we get snared,

  171. and how we overcome.

  172. Okay?

  173. So what is temptation?

  174. Okay?

  175. Well, let's look in this verse.

  176. Lead us not into temptation,

  177. but deliver us from evil.

  178. I don't know if you've read that verse before,

  179. but if you have,

  180. and like me,

  181. I always found that really strange.

  182. Because think about it.

  183. Firstly,

  184. how can a loving father

  185. lead you into temptation?

  186. If temptation is meant to be bad,

  187. why would he lead you into it?

  188. Strange.

  189. James 1,

  190. in the passage we read earlier,

  191. says,

  192. God does not tempt anyone.

  193. So it's just never made sense to me

  194. why we pray,

  195. God,

  196. don't lead me into temptation.

  197. Strange.

  198. Secondly,

  199. am I praying for God

  200. to remove all temptation from me?

  201. You know,

  202. Jesus was tempted by the devil

  203. in the wilderness,

  204. and God didn't just remove the temptation.

  205. Am I asking God

  206. to make all attractive women or men

  207. suddenly seem ugly to me?

  208. Or chocolate smell like durian?

  209. Do you know,

  210. is that what we're asking?

  211. Some people like durian,

  212. but it's okay.

  213. We can talk with you later.

  214. We'll pray for you.

  215. Yes.

  216. Deliver us from evil.

  217. Yes.

  218. So,

  219. so to understand temptation,

  220. I googled it.

  221. And do you know what I found?

  222. Temptation

  223. is a brand of cat treats,

  224. deodorant,

  225. chocolates,

  226. a nail collection,

  227. sunglasses,

  228. handbags,

  229. and a jewelry and fashion store.

  230. I looked more deeply

  231. into this topic,

  232. and I discovered

  233. that it's a behavior

  234. which is kind of naughty

  235. but nice.

  236. You know,

  237. it's something maybe

  238. which prevents you

  239. getting your goals,

  240. you know,

  241. so we overeat,

  242. it's overspending,

  243. it's spending too much time

  244. on Facebook,

  245. it's procrastinating,

  246. it's inappropriate sex,

  247. it's worrying.

  248. All of these things

  249. are right at the top of the list

  250. of what temptation is.

  251. And they,

  252. and they can be.

  253. But the Bible

  254. has a different definition

  255. of what temptation is.

  256. If you look in James 1,

    James 1:14

  257. verse 14,

  258. it says,

  259. each person,

  260. and it's in your bulletin,

  261. each person is tempted

  262. when he's lured

  263. and enticed

  264. by his own desire.

  265. That word lured

  266. and enticed

  267. means to be literally

  268. drawn away.

  269. Temptation

  270. is anything

  271. that seeks

  272. to draw your heart

  273. away

  274. from finding

  275. satisfaction,

  276. security,

  277. hope,

  278. comfort,

  279. delight in God.

  280. It could be anything,

  281. the obvious,

  282. money,

  283. work,

  284. pornography,

  285. they're on the surface.

  286. For me,

  287. lying was my surface

  288. sin,

  289. surface temptation,

  290. but underneath,

  291. temptation is born

  292. and birthed

  293. out of your desire.

  294. It's a desire

  295. for approval,

  296. security,

  297. control,

  298. any of those things

  299. and to find them

  300. in anything

  301. other than God.

  302. But the word

  303. temptation in the Bible

  304. also has another meaning.

  305. And the second meaning

  306. is to be tried

  307. or tested.

  308. In verse 12

  309. in that passage

  310. in James,

  311. it says,

  312. blessed is the man

  313. who perseveres

  314. under trial.

  315. That word trial

  316. is the same word

  317. for temptation.

  318. temptation.

  319. And what it means

  320. is God

  321. leads us

  322. in life

  323. into testing

  324. situations,

  325. just like Jesus

  326. in the wilderness.

  327. And he does it

  328. to strengthen us

  329. and to teach us

  330. how to trust him

  331. in those moments.

  332. But temptation

  333. comes in

  334. when we want to

  335. satisfy our desires

  336. in the wrong way,

  337. at the wrong time,

  338. and apart from God

  339. and the way he wants

  340. us to live.

  341. Calvin,

  342. who was the

  343. great French reformer,

  344. he used to say,

  345. said this about this verse.

  346. He said,

  347. you know,

  348. there are temptations

  349. on your right hand

  350. and temptations

  351. on the left hand.

  352. He said,

  353. on the right hand,

  354. you've got temptations

  355. of success,

  356. riches,

  357. approval,

  358. when everything

  359. seems to be going well.

  360. And you are tempted

  361. in those moments

  362. to think,

  363. I can do it.

  364. I can rely on myself.

  365. I'm pretty good,

  366. aren't I?

  367. Look at the way

  368. I manage to do things.

  369. And I don't really

  370. need God in my life.

  371. That's the ones

  372. on the right hand.

  373. I can satisfy myself

  374. my way.

  375. But then on the left hand,

  376. there's temptations

  377. when everything

  378. seems to be going wrong,

  379. when you're not getting

  380. what you want,

  381. when there's suffering,

  382. when there's insecurity,

  383. when you fail,

  384. when there's rejection,

  385. all those other things.

  386. And we're tempted

  387. to worry,

  388. tempted to complain,

  389. tempted to find

  390. the security

  391. he would long for

  392. in anything

  393. other than God.

  394. I don't know

  395. where you are

  396. right now.

  397. It's 2016,

  398. but God has led you

  399. to where you are

  400. right now.

  401. And I don't know

  402. whether everything's

  403. going really well

  404. for you,

  405. or everything's

  406. just out of control.

  407. You know,

  408. you may have got

  409. your bonus,

  410. you may have got

  411. your pay rise,

  412. you just think

  413. things are great.

  414. Or you're struggling,

  415. you look at the

  416. financial situation

  417. in 2016,

  418. you look at your work,

  419. you look at your health,

  420. you look at your kids,

  421. and you're stressed out.

  422. I don't know which it is,

  423. but God has led you

  424. right here,

  425. and he's calling to you,

  426. and the question is,

  427. where are you looking

  428. for right now

  429. for your security,

  430. for your comfort,

  431. for your pleasure,

  432. for your approval,

  433. for control?

  434. Every day,

  435. we're tempted to find

  436. those things in our work,

  437. in other people's opinions,

  438. in our great plans,

  439. in our families,

  440. in our spouses.

  441. And if you want to know

  442. where temptation is lurking,

  443. just look at the things

  444. which stress you out.

  445. Look at the things

  446. which make you fearful,

  447. make you frustrated

  448. and angry,

  449. because lurking underneath,

  450. you may find

  451. that temptation

  452. has got you.

  453. But temptation

  454. is not sin in itself.

  455. Otherwise,

  456. Jesus would have sinned

  457. when he was tempted.

  458. Having a thought

  459. entering your mind

  460. isn't sin.

  461. We have people

  462. putting thoughts

  463. in our minds

  464. all the time,

  465. you know,

  466. colleagues,

  467. parents,

  468. media,

  469. Satan,

  470. all kinds of things,

  471. but the key word here

  472. is have we entered

  473. into temptation,

  474. or are we refusing

  475. to let it in?

  476. In Genesis 4,

  477. I don't know,

  478. you know the story

  479. of Cain and Abel,

  480. God says to Cain,

  481. who's just had

  482. his sacrifice rejected,

  483. and he's feeling jealous,

  484. he's feeling angry,

  485. he's feeling like,

  486. oh,

  487. my brother,

  488. it's not fair,

  489. life's not good,

  490. and God says to him,

  491. you know what,

  492. in this moment,

  493. you have a choice,

  494. because sin

  495. is crouching,

  496. like a lion,

  497. waiting to pounce,

  498. and he says,

  499. it wants to master you,

  500. but you must rule over it,

  501. that's what God says to us

  502. with our temptations,

  503. when I was a kid,

  504. every Christmas,

  505. there used to be this movie

  506. called Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,

  507. I don't know if anyone

  508. has seen it,

  509. there's a few people,

  510. okay,

  511. go ahead and watch it,

  512. but there was one character

  513. who just really freaked me out,

  514. in fact,

  515. he's been voted

  516. one of the scariest

  517. children's characters

  518. in a movie,

  519. he was called

  520. the Child Snatcher,

  521. and he would ride

  522. into town on a cart,

  523. and he'd get out

  524. of the cart,

  525. and he'd call

  526. for all the children

  527. in the town to come,

  528. and he'd offer them

  529. free ice cream

  530. and lollipops,

  531. and though the kids

  532. knew that they shouldn't

  533. go out to see him,

  534. the offer of free sweets

  535. was too much,

  536. and they were drawn

  537. out of their home,

  538. and they were lured

  539. into his cart

  540. with the ice cream,

  541. and as soon as

  542. they went in,

  543. he would slam the door,

  544. and he would reveal

  545. that it was actually

  546. a cage that were

  547. inside of,

  548. and then he would

  549. ride off with them

  550. imprisoned.

  551. Can you see how I was

  552. scared as a kid,

  553. you know?

  554. I'm still traumatized

  555. by it,

  556. you know,

  557. but that's what

  558. entering into temptation

  559. is.

  560. It imprisons you,

  561. it ensnares you,

  562. and this prayer,

  563. lead us not

  564. into temptation,

  565. is saying,

  566. Dad,

  567. Father,

  568. right now,

  569. with the circumstances

  570. that you have placed me in,

  571. with the temptations

  572. around me

  573. to just drawing me

  574. to find my satisfaction

  575. in anything other than you,

  576. don't let me entertain them,

  577. don't let me be

  578. captivated by them,

  579. don't let me be

  580. drawn away from you

  581. in these situations,

  582. don't let that lion

  583. that's waiting to pounce

  584. steal my joy in you,

  585. because my relationship

  586. with you

  587. is more important

  588. than anything else.

  589. That's what this prayer

  590. is saying.

  591. Provide me a way

  592. to overcome.

  593. So what's tempting you

  594. at the moment?

  595. Do you know?

  596. Do you know?

  597. That's what temptation is.

  598. How do we get snared

  599. and trapped?

  600. Genesis 3,

  601. before Cain's story,

  602. The Fall of Man

  603. is a great passage

  604. just to show

  605. how temptation works.

  606. God gives a command.

  607. He says,

  608. don't eat from the fruit

  609. of the tree

  610. of the knowledge

  611. and good and evil.

  612. I want you to trust me.

  613. I want you to depend on me.

  614. I don't want you

  615. to be independent.

  616. I want you to stay close to me.

  617. But then Satan comes

  618. with a lie.

  619. And all temptation

  620. starts with a lie.

  621. Satan says,

  622. did God really say,

  623. did he really say,

  624. you can't eat from any tree

  625. in the garden?

  626. God hadn't said that at all,

  627. but he'd said,

  628. only one tree.

  629. But all temptation

  630. works like this.

  631. It starts with placing doubt

  632. as to whether God

  633. is really good

  634. and whether you can

  635. really trust him.

  636. God's holding something

  637. back from you.

  638. You won't die,

  639. Satan says.

  640. You won't be imprisoned.

  641. God knows that if you eat

  642. from this tree,

  643. you'll be like him.

  644. You'll be satisfied.

  645. You'll be powerful.

  646. You'll have approval.

  647. You'll have security.

  648. You'll have everything

  649. that you want

  650. if you just do this thing.

  651. God is trying

  652. to stop you habit.

  653. You obey God

  654. and you're going

  655. to miss out.

  656. That's the lie

  657. that's coming in.

  658. That's the lies

  659. in my story

  660. at the beginning.

  661. I can't rely on God

  662. for my approval.

  663. I need it from someone else

  664. because that's what's

  665. going to satisfy me.

  666. But it never does.

  667. You know?

  668. The people I crave

  669. their approval

  670. spend very little time

  671. worrying about me.

  672. I spend more time

  673. worrying about

  674. what they think about me.

  675. And even if they think

  676. I'm great today,

  677. well then tomorrow

  678. they may even think

  679. I'm an idiot.

  680. But it starts with a lie

  681. that that's what

  682. will satisfy us.

  683. But it starts with a lie

  684. and then it moves on

  685. to a desire

  686. that you dwell on.

  687. The woman sees

  688. the tree

  689. is good for food

  690. and a delight

  691. to the eyes

  692. and it's desired

  693. to make you wise.

  694. Now,

  695. I don't know

  696. if you've thought

  697. about that story

  698. if you know it

  699. but

  700. the woman

  701. didn't just kind of

  702. glance at the tree

  703. and oh that looks

  704. really good for food.

  705. No.

  706. She stops

  707. to linger.

  708. She gazes on it.

  709. She starts

  710. to salivate.

  711. Wow.

  712. Oh, that fruit looks good.

  713. And that

  714. then leads

  715. over a process

  716. to then

  717. she eats it.

  718. You know,

  719. some of you

  720. will know

  721. Mark 6 is tomorrow

  722. or Tuesday I think.

  723. Do you know

  724. what the prize is?

  725. A hundred

  726. million dollars.

  727. Oh.

  728. Now,

  729. I don't do Mark 6.

  730. Never have.

  731. But when I heard

  732. about it

  733. you know

  734. what went on

  735. in my mind.

  736. My mind

  737. went for a little wonder.

  738. I started wondering

  739. well,

  740. what would I do

  741. if I had

  742. a hundred million dollars?

  743. And obviously

  744. I'd give a large amount

  745. to the church

  746. and to charity

  747. but just think

  748. about the holidays,

  749. the houses,

  750. the cars.

  751. And you know,

  752. I had a little while

  753. just kind of

  754. dwelling on it

  755. and you know,

  756. talk a little while

  757. with some other people

  758. about it

  759. and you know,

  760. after a little while

  761. I suddenly started

  762. to realize something.

  763. My heart

  764. was slowly beginning

  765. to get captivated

  766. by the thought of it.

  767. And the crazy thing is

  768. I might proudly

  769. proclaim to you

  770. that I have never

  771. bought

  772. a Mark 6 ticket

  773. and I wouldn't be

  774. so greediest

  775. to do that.

  776. But in my heart

  777. I've been captivated

  778. and greed

  779. has begun

  780. to pounce

  781. and I'm walking

  782. into the cage

  783. and if I allow

  784. those thoughts

  785. to just continue

  786. and just drift

  787. and just wander

  788. a little longer

  789. you know,

  790. my heart

  791. bit by bit

  792. will no longer

  793. see giving

  794. for example

  795. on a Sunday

  796. as a joy

  797. but it will feel

  798. a bit like

  799. I'm losing out.

  800. You know,

  801. I could have that money

  802. for so many other things.

  803. And when my heart

  804. begins to get

  805. captivated

  806. by finding pleasure

  807. and security

  808. in money

  809. or in relationships

  810. or in achievements

  811. or anything else

  812. that could be

  813. dwelling in your mind,

  814. the less

  815. I will find joy

  816. in Christ

  817. as my pleasure

  818. and the less

  819. in my life

  820. I will be generous

  821. and joyful

  822. about it.

  823. The Bible says

  824. you can't serve

  825. God and money

  826. but it's just

  827. a thought,

  828. you know,

  829. it's just a thought

  830. we say.

  831. John Owen,

  832. the 16th century

  833. English preacher,

  834. he said this

  835. and this was

  836. convicting,

  837. he said,

  838. you've entered

  839. into temptation

  840. not just when

  841. you've actually

  842. committed

  843. the outward sin

  844. but right

  845. when your heart

  846. secretly begins

  847. to like

  848. the temptation

  849. and you're happy

  850. to feed it.

  851. Do you know

  852. why I didn't resist

  853. that thought?

  854. Because I like it

  855. and I'm happy

  856. to feed the lion

  857. and the lie

  858. I'm believing

  859. is that money

  860. can give me

  861. satisfaction

  862. and security

  863. in life

  864. and I've forgotten

  865. that I have a good

  866. heavenly father

  867. who says

  868. he will satisfy

  869. me with good things

  870. and I can trust

  871. him to provide

  872. what I and my

  873. family need.

  874. Lead me

  875. not into temptation.

  876. What have you

  877. been dwelling on

  878. in your mind

  879. this week?

  880. What's been running

  881. around there

  882. captivating your

  883. thoughts

  884. and your heart?

  885. Where are you

  886. outwardly doing

  887. the right thing

  888. but inwardly

  889. the idea

  890. of your heavenly

  891. father

  892. satisfying

  893. your desires

  894. just seems

  895. a little bit

  896. crazy.

  897. It seems

  898. totally out

  899. of your

  900. current reality

  901. because

  902. maybe

  903. you're in

  904. the cage

  905. and Christ

  906. is wanting

  907. to set you

  908. free

  909. to see

  910. that he

  911. can be

  912. those things

  913. that your

  914. heart desires.

  915. Temptation

  916. is anything

  917. that draws

  918. us away

  919. from Christ.

  920. We get

  921. snared

  922. when we

  923. believe lies

  924. and when

  925. we dwell

  926. on temptation.

  927. How do

  928. we overcome

  929. temptation?

  930. Third thing.

  931. The problem

  932. with temptation

  933. Oscar Wilde

  934. the playwright

  935. summed it up

  936. very well.

  937. He said

  938. I can resist

  939. everything

  940. except temptation.

  941. You see

  942. temptation

  943. is all around

  944. you.

  945. I just look

  946. on the MTR

  947. and there are

  948. pictures of

  949. beautiful women

  950. which will

  951. either tempt

  952. you to lust

  953. or to despair.

  954. There are

  955. pictures of

  956. Facebook

  957. of everyone's

  958. happy life

  959. which will

  960. tempt you

  961. to just

  962. look at

  963. your own

  964. and be

  965. dissatisfied.

  966. You go

  967. into the

  968. office,

  969. you go

  970. into the

  971. playground,

  972. the behavior

  973. of your

  974. colleagues,

  975. it tempts

  976. you to

  977. get mad,

  978. fearful,

  979. look down

  980. on them,

  981. crave their

  982. approval,

  983. want to be

  984. like them.

  985. It's all

  986. around wherever

  987. you go.

  988. Even this

  989. morning you

  990. may have had

  991. some temptation

  992. on the way.

  993. And so

  994. monks for

  995. over a thousand

  996. years thought

  997. the solution

  998. to this

  999. must be

  1000. we've got

  1001. to escape

  1002. the world.

  1003. So they

  1004. built

  1005. monasteries up

  1006. on mountains

  1007. way away

  1008. from people

  1009. to escape

  1010. this dangerous

  1011. evil world.

  1012. But the

  1013. problem was

  1014. the monasteries

  1015. became as

  1016. sinful and

  1017. filled with

  1018. lust and

  1019. greed and

  1020. drunkenness

  1021. as everywhere

  1022. else.

  1023. So our

  1024. society has

  1025. come up with

  1026. a different

  1027. solution.

  1028. And this

  1029. was great,

  1030. I found

  1031. this on

  1032. Friday in

  1033. our office.

  1034. This is just

  1035. preacher's dream.

  1036. It was like

  1037. Special K.

  1038. On the

  1039. back it

  1040. says,

  1041. let's hear

  1042. it for

  1043. willpower.

  1044. It says

  1045. here,

  1046. a new

  1047. way to

  1048. conquer

  1049. temptation.

  1050. When cravings

  1051. sneak into

  1052. your day,

  1053. turn to

  1054. new,

  1055. positively

  1056. delicious

  1057. Special K.

  1058. Here we

  1059. go.

  1060. This is the

  1061. solution.

  1062. Okay.

  1063. Underneath it

  1064. says,

  1065. tell us

  1066. how you

  1067. beat

  1068. temptation

  1069. and share

  1070. encouragement

  1071. on Facebook.

  1072. So do you

  1073. know what I

  1074. did?

  1075. I went on

  1076. to Facebook

  1077. because I

  1078. wanted to

  1079. tell you a

  1080. great story

  1081. about how

  1082. someone had

  1083. been helped

  1084. by Special

  1085. K.

  1086. And I

  1087. went on

  1088. there.

  1089. I didn't

  1090. find a

  1091. single

  1092. testimony

  1093. about the

  1094. greatness of

  1095. Special K

  1096. in beating

  1097. temptation.

  1098. I was very

  1099. disappointed.

  1100. I don't

  1101. know if

  1102. you

  1103. take

  1104. Special K

  1105. but maybe

  1106. it helps

  1107. you.

  1108. You should

  1109. write in

  1110. if it

  1111. does.

  1112. But David

  1113. Brooks of

  1114. the New York

  1115. Times,

  1116. he says,

  1117. the fact that

  1118. we fail to

  1119. keep most of

  1120. our New

  1121. Year's

  1122. resolutions

  1123. struggle to

  1124. lose weight

  1125. shows us

  1126. that willpower

  1127. isn't the

  1128. solution to

  1129. temptation.

  1130. Your willpower

  1131. is not like

  1132. a dam

  1133. that can

  1134. block the

  1135. torrent of

  1136. self-indulgence.

  1137. It's more

  1138. like a muscle

  1139. which tires

  1140. easily.

  1141. Moreover,

  1142. you're a

  1143. social being.

  1144. If everybody

  1145. around you

  1146. is overeating,

  1147. you'll probably

  1148. do so too.

  1149. Willpower,

  1150. doesn't matter

  1151. how hard you

  1152. try,

  1153. is not the

  1154. solution.

  1155. And even if

  1156. you think you've

  1157. got the

  1158. willpower,

  1159. listen,

  1160. I can walk

  1161. along a

  1162. street without

  1163. having to look

  1164. constantly at my

  1165. phone.

  1166. Occasionally.

  1167. And I feel

  1168. very proud about

  1169. the self-control

  1170. that I exercise.

  1171. Sometimes even

  1172. when a WhatsApp

  1173. goes off,

  1174. I will resist.

  1175. And then I

  1176. walk along and

  1177. I see these

  1178. people who

  1179. don't have the

  1180. same amount of

  1181. self-discipline

  1182. that I have,

  1183. and they bump

  1184. into me.

  1185. And I look at

  1186. them and I

  1187. think,

  1188. why can't you

  1189. be as

  1190. disciplined as

  1191. me?

  1192. Can't you

  1193. just have a

  1194. little bit of

  1195. self-control,

  1196. a little bit

  1197. of willpower,

  1198. just to not

  1199. be a slave

  1200. to your phone?

  1201. And the

  1202. thing is,

  1203. where I feel

  1204. I have strong

  1205. willpower,

  1206. do you know

  1207. what it does?

  1208. I have little

  1209. patience for

  1210. those who

  1211. seem to be

  1212. weaker than

  1213. me in that.

  1214. And the

  1215. love in my

  1216. heart for

  1217. them shrivels.

  1218. And do you

  1219. know what?

  1220. I've actually

  1221. entered into

  1222. another temptation,

  1223. that of pride

  1224. and self-righteousness.

  1225. You rely on

  1226. willpower,

  1227. you'll have

  1228. entered into

  1229. temptation of

  1230. self-righteousness.

  1231. Now, don't get

  1232. me wrong,

  1233. in the moment,

  1234. willpower,

  1235. you have to use

  1236. willpower to

  1237. resist.

  1238. Like, if you

  1239. want to shout

  1240. at somebody,

  1241. now, me,

  1242. anyone,

  1243. okay,

  1244. count to

  1245. ten,

  1246. hold your

  1247. tongue,

  1248. punch something,

  1249. not a person,

  1250. the wall,

  1251. okay,

  1252. use every

  1253. ounce of

  1254. your willpower

  1255. to resist.

  1256. Absolutely.

  1257. But you've

  1258. got to realize

  1259. that the

  1260. problem,

  1261. ultimately,

  1262. is not your

  1263. will that's

  1264. the issue,

  1265. it's your

  1266. heart that's

  1267. the issue,

  1268. and willpower

  1269. can't change

  1270. your heart.

  1271. Because

  1272. the lying,

  1273. the anger,

  1274. the greed,

  1275. the lust

  1276. that drives

  1277. you,

  1278. is not

  1279. there because

  1280. you're not

  1281. disciplined

  1282. enough.

  1283. It's there

  1284. because your

  1285. heart has

  1286. been captivated

  1287. by something

  1288. other than

  1289. God.

  1290. That's why.

  1291. Special K,

  1292. on their

  1293. website,

  1294. say,

  1295. you are

  1296. strong,

  1297. and we are

  1298. here to help

  1299. you stay

  1300. that way.

  1301. the Lord's

  1302. prayer says,

  1303. you are

  1304. weak,

  1305. you need

  1306. a savior,

  1307. you need

  1308. a deliverer,

  1309. you're a

  1310. child,

  1311. you need

  1312. a father,

  1313. we are

  1314. sinful,

  1315. we need

  1316. someone to

  1317. rescue us.

  1318. That is why

  1319. this prayer,

  1320. lead us not

  1321. into temptation,

  1322. should be

  1323. constantly on

  1324. our lips,

  1325. because it

  1326. recognizes our

  1327. weaknesses.

  1328. I can't resist

  1329. temptation by

  1330. myself.

  1331. I might stop

  1332. gambling on

  1333. Mark 6,

  1334. but I can't

  1335. change the

  1336. greed in my

  1337. heart to

  1338. love God

  1339. more by

  1340. myself.

  1341. You know,

  1342. there's an

  1343. old Greek

  1344. myth about

  1345. the sirens,

  1346. who are kind

  1347. of mermaid-like

  1348. creatures,

  1349. whose beautiful

  1350. voices lured

  1351. sailors to

  1352. steer their

  1353. ships towards

  1354. the sound,

  1355. and then they

  1356. would dash

  1357. themselves on

  1358. the rocks,

  1359. and be

  1360. destroyed.

  1361. Time and

  1362. again,

  1363. the sailors

  1364. sailed past

  1365. the sirens,

  1366. they would put

  1367. their fingers

  1368. in the ears,

  1369. they would do

  1370. anything to

  1371. stop the

  1372. sound,

  1373. yet every

  1374. time it was

  1375. too much for

  1376. them,

  1377. and they would

  1378. steer their

  1379. ship,

  1380. and they would

  1381. dash into

  1382. the rocks.

  1383. Then one day,

  1384. a ship came

  1385. along,

  1386. and the

  1387. siren voices,

  1388. these beautiful

  1389. voices,

  1390. called out,

  1391. and the sailors

  1392. were going

  1393. crazy trying

  1394. to resist,

  1395. and then a

  1396. guy called

  1397. Orpheus,

  1398. he gets out

  1399. his lyre,

  1400. and he starts

  1401. to play this

  1402. beautiful song,

  1403. and the song

  1404. was so beautiful

  1405. that it drowned

  1406. out the voices

  1407. of the sirens,

  1408. and the ship

  1409. carried on and

  1410. sailed past.

  1411. It was the only

  1412. ship that survived.

  1413. This is how our

  1414. hearts will resist

  1415. temptation.

  1416. the way to resist

  1417. is to have a

  1418. more beautiful

  1419. song that is

  1420. playing in your

  1421. hearts,

  1422. a more beautiful

  1423. song than the

  1424. things around us

  1425. that captivate us

  1426. are telling us.

  1427. It's to find our

  1428. approval and our

  1429. comfort and our

  1430. recognition and our

  1431. satisfaction in

  1432. Christ,

  1433. in his death who

  1434. has brought us

  1435. into his presence

1436. to be loved by the

  1437. one whose love is

  1438. boundless.

  1439. And here's the

  1440. thing, listen,

  1441. you will only live

  1442. for Christ if you

  1443. are satisfied in

  1444. him.

  1445. You will only live

  1446. for Christ if

  1447. you're satisfied

  1448. in him.

  1449. You will not drink

  1450. from a muddy

  1451. puddle if you

  1452. realize that there

  1453. is a fountain

  1454. there that you

  1455. can drink from.

  1456. And the gospel of

  1457. Jesus Christ is

  1458. that more beautiful

  1459. song.

  1460. this Hebrews

  1461. passage that we

  1462. read out, it

  1463. says, we don't

  1464. have a high priest

  1465. who is unable to

  1466. sympathize with our

  1467. weaknesses, but we

  1468. have one who's been

  1469. tempted in every

  1470. way and yet

  1471. without sin.

  1472. Let us then

  1473. approach the

  1474. throne of grace

  1475. with confidence

  1476. to find grace

  1477. and mercy in our

  1478. time of need.

1479. for a liar and an

  1480. approval freak like

  1481. me, Christ came

  1482. down.

  1483. He was tempted

  1484. like you and I

  1485. were, tempted to

  1486. be his own savior,

  1487. tempted to seek his

  1488. own glory, and yet

1489. when I get lured into

  1490. that cage, he

  1491. didn't.

  1492. He resisted.

  1493. resisted.

  1494. He stayed totally

  1495. dependent, loving and

  1496. obedient to his

  1497. father because he

  1498. found his satisfaction

  1499. and approval in

  1500. pleasing his father

  1501. because he knew his

  1502. love.

  1503. And though he resisted

  1504. every temptation, he

  1505. doesn't look on you

  1506. and me with self-righteousness

1507. upon our weakness as we

1508. fail and say, can't you

  1509. do any better?

1510. Look, I can do it.

  1511. Why can't you?

  1512. He doesn't say that.

  1513. But with compassion,

  1514. with sympathy, he

  1515. says, run to me.

  1516. Turn to me.

  1517. And I have grace

  1518. enough to satisfy

  1519. your soul in any

  1520. moment of need.

  1521. So the lure of

  1522. whatever is tempting

  1523. you at the moment

  1524. loses its appeal.

  1525. And it's not just

  1526. grace, there is

  1527. mercy for those of

  1528. us who have

  1529. stumbled, even this

  1530. week.

  1531. who is in that

  1532. cage of temptation.

  1533. His mercy is

  1534. vaster than the

  1535. ocean.

1536. If your sin is like

  1537. a dripping tap, his

  1538. mercy is like the

  1539. Niagara Falls.

  1540. It is incessant.

  1541. It is constant.

  1542. It is there

  1543. available.

1544. He asks us to run.

1545. That is why he says,

  1546. pray to me.

  1547. Run to me.

  1548. Will you run?

  1549. Turn.

  1550. Repent.

  1551. Turn to him and

  1552. find that there is

  1553. somebody who loves

  1554. you more than

  1555. you could imagine.

  1556. Because he's a

  1557. father who wants

  1558. to hold you.

  1559. He's a father who

  1560. will supply all of

  1561. your needs.

1562. He says, if I have

  1563. given my life for

1564. you, how am I going

  1565. to hold back anything

  1566. good that will

  1567. satisfy your soul?

  1568. There's that song,

  1569. you know, he's got

  1570. the whole world in

  1571. his hands.

  1572. Well, he's got your

  1573. 2016 in his hands.

  1574. He's got the stock

  1575. market in his hands.

  1576. He's got your health.

  1577. He's got your kids.

  1578. He's got your

  1579. relationships in his

  1580. hands.

1581. So will you trust him

  1582. with them?

  1583. Because there's no

  1584. other hands in this

  1585. universe who's a more

  1586. loving, more strong,

  1587. more faithful than his.

  1588. God.

1589. And he gave his son so

  1590. that we might find

  1591. satisfaction in him.

  1592. I don't need to crave

1593. approval from people if I

  1594. keep singing that song

  1595. reminding that my father

  1596. accepts me.

1597. We don't need to rely on

1598. our jobs for security if

1599. we know that he is the

1600. most secure one in the

1601. world and he's got it all

  1602. in his hands.

1603. And he says, I love you.

  1604. You can trust me.

  1605. That's the gospel.

1606. And that's what we need

  1607. to keep singing to

  1608. ourselves.

1609. We need to keep singing

  1610. to each other daily.

1611. I am more sinful and

  1612. weaker than I can

  1613. possibly imagine, but I

1614. am more loved and more

  1615. accepted than I could

  1616. dare comprehend.

1617. So do we sing that to

  1618. each other daily?

  1619. I mean, if you don't

1620. sing well like me, then

1621. say it to each other.

1622. You know, this is the

  1623. reason why we sing

  1624. songs.

1625. You know, this is the

1626. reason why we read God's

  1627. word.

1628. This is the reason why we

  1629. have community groups.

  1630. Because we need to

  1631. constantly have that song

1632. in a world which is

  1633. singing so many other

  1634. songs to us.

1635. Because if you are not

1636. having that song, let me

1637. tell you, Owen will say

  1638. you're already in the

  1639. cage.

  1640. You're already in

  1641. temptation.

1642. If God's word is not

  1643. something that is your

  1644. dwelling on, you're

  1645. delighting in, you need

1646. to pray, God, help me to

  1647. delight in your word,

  1648. because otherwise you're

  1649. going to be ensnared.

  1650. Did you notice this

1651. prayer is lead us, us, not

  1652. into temptation?

  1653. Not just me.

  1654. It's us.

1655. We talk a lot about

  1656. community here at

  1657. Watermark.

  1658. But I think we're in

  1659. danger sometimes of

  1660. missing what that means.

  1661. It's not just a social

  1662. group.

  1663. It's not just the

  1664. American club.

  1665. It's a group of weak and

  1666. broken people who are

  1667. pointing each other to

  1668. Christ in the normal

  1669. things of everyday life.

  1670. life.

  1671. How does it happen?

  1672. We share our temptations

  1673. with each other.

  1674. I don't know.

1675. Have you shared what is

1676. tempting you this week with

  1677. anybody?

1678. Because you probably see a

  1679. pattern in your life.

1680. And some of us who know

1681. that we're right in that

  1682. cage of temptation, the

1683. first step that you and I

1684. need to take is to actually

1685. go and admit it to somebody,

  1686. a Christian brother or

  1687. sister, because that's going

1688. to be the first step of

  1689. having somebody else

  1690. alongside you.

1691. Because if you're like me,

  1692. sometimes I forget,

  1693. sometimes I'm so attracted

1694. that I need somebody else

1695. to sing that song to me.

1696. And if nobody knows what

1697. the song is that I need to

1698. hear, then how are they

1699. going to sing it to me?

1700. Some of you need to admit

  1701. where you're struggling,

  1702. where you're actually

  1703. wading deep in temptation.

1704. And in our CGs, if we truly

  1705. believe that relationship

1706. with Christ is where we find

  1707. our satisfaction, then we

  1708. should know the temptations

1709. of at least one person in our

1710. CG and we should be praying

  1711. for them regularly, daily.

1712. Not as someone who's better,

1713. but as a fellow struggler in

1714. this fight, in this war,

1715. knowing that Christ has won

  1716. the victory.

1717. The elders need you to pray

  1718. for them.

1719. I need you to pray for me.

1720. Your CG members need you

  1721. to pray for them.

1722. Pray not just for our

  1723. physical needs, but because

1724. my heart is so tempted to go

  1725. astray.

1726. So here's what you can pray.

1727. Chris is going to work today.

1728. He's going to be tempted to

1729. crave the approval of others,

1730. to think that money will

  1731. ultimately satisfy him.

1732. And that can lead him to

  1733. lying, to cheating, to

1734. envying, to losing his joy in

  1735. you.

1736. Father, would you help him

1737. know that you will be his

  1738. acceptance, his satisfaction?

1739. Don't let his heart be led

  1740. away this week.

1741. Let him see that you are the

1742. Father in heaven who supplies

  1743. all his needs.

  1744. He will satisfy him.

1745. God, we need you to

  1746. pray for him.

1747. Because this is the way we

  1748. start praying.

1749. This is the way we love each

  1750. other.

  1751. So let's be a church that

1752. loves each other enough to

  1753. pray this prayer.

1754. Our Father, hallowed be your

  1755. name.

1756. You are worthy of our

  1757. worship.

  1758. Your kingdom come.

  1759. Your will be done.

  1760. It's all about you.

1761. Give us today our daily bread.

1762. We need you to provide.

1763. Would you forgive us for where

1764. we keep getting our hearts

1765. captured by so many other

  1766. things?

1767. And forgive those who have

1768. hurt us so we're not

1769. tempted to hold on to

  1770. bitterness.

1771. And would you enable us to

1772. keep you at the center of our

  1773. affections?

1774. Don't lead us into temptation.

  1775. Provide a way out.

1776. Give us the strength that we

1777. may honor you, that we may

  1778. glorify you.

1779. And that in this church, people

1780. would see that Christ is our

  1781. satisfaction, our delight, and

  1782. he's our joy.

  1783. Let's pray.

1784. Father, there are so many,

1785. so many things which draw us

  1786. and pull us.

  1787. And sometimes I admit I don't

1788. even know that they're pulling

  1789. me.

  1790. I don't realize I dwell on

  1791. things.

1792. I pray now for each one of us.

1793. You would show us where we're

1794. dwelling on things which are not

  1795. you.

1796. Help us to see what the things

1797. we feel like we can't do

  1798. without.

1799. And to realize that you are the

1800. one who we can't do without.

1801. And though everything else may

1802. crumble and fall, if we have you,

1803. we have what we need.

1804. Help us to see that not just as a

1805. theory, but in the practical

  1806. everyday things of life.

1807. When we go to our office, or go

1808. to our families, or we go to our

1809. friends, when we go on the

1810. internet this week, would we see,

1811. would we see that you are

  1812. satisfying for us?

  1813. In your name.

  1814. Amen.
