  1. Father, we confess before you that we can get very impatient with you.

  2. Father, we confess before you that in our culture, we like snappy slogans and really

  3. easy to digest phrases and things that just make it, Father, so that we can at least think

  4. we understand very quickly and easily without having to think.

  5. And Father, we confess before you that that's what we're like.

  6. That's partially how our culture has formed us.

  7. And so, Father, we acknowledge that when we come to your word, that often we find it hard

  8. to understand and difficult to understand.

  9. And we confess before you, Father, that we're not patient with that and we're not humbled

  10. by it, but we get frustrated with you.

  11. And maybe, Father, we confess that we just skip over all those parts until we find a quote

  12. we like that's easy for us to understand.

  13. And we confess before you, Father, that we do this without even being aware that we

  14. do it.

  15. So, Father, we ask that your Holy Spirit would gently humble us and grant us penitent hearts,

  16. Father.

  17. Help us, Father, to be willing to have your word form us, that we might be made in the

  18. image of Jesus as we dwell on your word.

  19. And forgive us, Father, for trying to tame you and make you our pocket God that does what

  20. we want when we want it.

  21. So, Father, we ask that your Holy Spirit would do this work in our lives as we open your word

  22. now.

  23. And this we ask in Jesus' name.

  24. Amen.

  25. Please be seated.

  26. Is my battery dying, Andrew?

  27. No?

  28. Okay.

  29. Okay.

  30. So, just a bit of an aside.

  31. You know, sometimes it can be odd for me.

  32. This has nothing ever to do with the sound guys.

  33. In fact, we should, after the service, I'll give the sound guy like a big round of applause

  34. or offer to buy him a free coffee or something like that.

  35. But sometimes what I hear is different from what you're hearing.

  36. And that can sometimes just throw me off a little bit.

  37. And obviously, anyway, there you go.

  38. So, this week, you know, it's really funny.

  39. I always pray every day for my sermon.

  40. And I pray as I'm reading the Bible.

  41. And I ask God to help me to understand the Bible.

  42. And this week, actually, the text which Laurie just read a few moments ago, I found it to

  43. be quite a hard text to understand.

  44. I'll be honest with you.

  45. I found it hard to understand.

  46. And, like, about two or three weeks ago, I had to talk about one of the clearest texts

  47. about homosexuality in the Bible.

  48. And actually, ironically, that text was really, really, really, really easy to understand.

  49. But it required lots of thought in terms of how I would talk about it in a place like

  50. Ottawa in 2015.

  51. But this text was just hard to understand.

  52. And then, in the process of trying to understand, something odd happened to me this week.

  53. I don't know if you notice it, but when I come up to the front, I have this, like, journal

  54. notebook.

  55. And I do all my notes.

  56. If you were to come and see me working on my sermon, you'd see me with a pen.

  57. I know it's very, very old-fashioned, but a pen in this book.

  58. And you'd see me reading and making these handwritten scrawls here.

  59. So on Saturday, when I was coming in to do some more work on my sermon, and I was in

  60. a Starbucks, this couple looked like they were in their late 30s, early 40s.

  61. They'd looked like they'd maybe just, one of them looked like they'd come maybe from a

  62. yoga workout, because they had, or maybe Pilates or something.

  63. They had the yoga mat.

  64. And so they sit beside me, and the woman sees me with a journal like this.

  65. And I'm, you know, looking out the window, and I'm thinking, and I'm writing things down.

  66. And she said, wow, that's really neat that you don't see many people anymore who actually

  67. just use pen and paper and write in journals like this.

  68. Like, that's really neat.

  69. Like, what are you doing?

  70. Like, what are you writing about?

  71. Now, here's what goes through my mind.

  72. Like, she's paying me a compliment, right?

  73. Like, she's basically saying, you must be deep.

  74. Like, you're not like all these other people just with their computers.

  75. Like, you're deep, thinking deep things, probably getting in touch with your feelings or your past.

  76. And so I have to confess that it's a great temptation to say, oh, you know, I'm just really trying to think through things in life.

  77. And I just like working with pen and paper.

  78. And who knows, we'd have a conversation, and she'd go away thinking, wow, that's a deep man.

  79. And I struggle because, you know, in fact, I'm looking at the Bible text, and I'm thinking about Romans 1, 16 to 17, and I'm going to preach a sermon.

  80. And I struggle.

  81. I have to confess that it was very powerful temptation for me to not say that I was working on a sermon.

  82. And I was, it's funny, you know, it's almost like I'm going in slow motion, because the whole thing, she wouldn't have even noticed a pause.

  83. But inside of me, I can feel this huge pressure not to say that I'm working on a sermon, but to try to have her think, and the fellow think very well of me, have the two of them think well of me.

  84. And so I say, well, I'm, actually, all week I've been reading the Bible, and I'm sort of reading the Bible now, and I have, I make notes as I try to think through what the Bible is teaching me,

  85. because I'm going to preach a sermon tomorrow, and I'm trying to work on my sermon.

  86. That's what I said to her, to the couple.

  87. And as soon as I said that, you could see the light in their eyes and their facial expression change.

  88. Like, it was like, oh, you're one of those.

  89. And I, and off you go.

  90. I mean, and then the conversation ended.

  91. In fact, to tell somebody that you're reading the Bible and want to preach a sermon is often how you stop conversations, not how you start them.

  92. Not all the time, obviously, as you know.

  93. And I mention that because it struck me that, that in some ways, God, I think, orchestrated that conversation to have that couple sit beside me.

  94. And it both reveals my own heart, how I desire to be flattered and to be thought well of of the world, and how I can start to be ashamed of the gospel.

  95. And it's a telling moment about myself.

  96. But it's, the fact of the matter is, is that, you know, for many people in our culture, people who go to church, that's not a, not often a sign of, of health and maturity.

  97. That people want to emulate us.

  98. Now, you're probably saying, George, this is Thanksgiving Sunday.

  99. You've just depressed the heck out of us.

  100. Like, here we are in here.

  101. And, by the way, I, I, I understand increasingly in our culture, I appreciate every person who's come on a Sunday morning.

  102. You make big choices.

  103. There's lots of other things.

  104. And there's lots of easy drifts in our culture to do something else.

  105. So I'm very, very appreciative of the fact that, that we're all here together this morning to be able to meet with Jesus in the presence of his people.

  106. But we know that many people in our culture see the church and the Bible as something toxic, not as something healthy.

  107. And it's interesting that this odd Bible text, which probably, as you were listening to it, you're thinking, what on earth is he talking about?

  108. That, in fact, this Bible text is a warning from the Bible about how the Bible and Bible knowledge and baptism and church attendance can, in fact, be toxic.

  109. That there's, in fact, ways of being involved in all of these things that act to immunize us against God.

  110. And immunize us against God in, in a form of self-justification and self-righteousness that people will find abhorrent and poisonous and want to run from.

  111. That's, in fact, what the text is largely about.

  112. So it'd be a great help to me if you were to get your Bibles and turn in them to, to Romans.

  113. Actually, and while you're turning to Romans chapter 2, Andrew, could you put up Romans 1 for, for us?

    Romans 2 chapter mention

  114. I'm going to have you, if you could read this with me in a moment.

  115. Those of you who've been coming here regularly, the way the book of Romans is written is the first seven verses sort of talk about a lot of the themes in the book.

  116. And then Paul has some very personal types of comments.

  117. And then it's almost as if in verse 16 and 17, those of you who are in university or have to read university papers,

  118. it's almost as if Paul gives an abstract of the entire book in two verses.

  119. And so week in, week out, we're going to keep sort of cycling back to this verse because it helps us to understand what's going on in the book.

  120. If we realize that everything in the book is unpacking and helping us to understand these two verses.

  121. So if you would read them with me, that would be great.

  122. For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

  123. For in the gospel, the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith.

  124. As it is written, the righteous shall live by faith.

  125. So now, if you have your Bibles open, let's hear what Paul says in Romans 2.

  126. Mindful that somehow or another, this that we're reading here, somehow or another serves Romans 1, 16 to 17.

  127. So Romans chapter 2, beginning at verse 17.

    Romans 2 chapter mention

  128. But if you call yourself a Jew and rely on the law and boast in God and know his will and approve what is excellent,

  129. because you're instructed from the law,

  130. And if you are sure that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness,

  131. an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of children, having in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth.

  132. One second, just want to pause here for a second.

  133. I'm going to go back and we're going to reread this.

  134. I'm going to read it again a second time.

  135. But one of the things that we have to do to help us to understand what Paul is saying is we have to make a word substitution here.

  136. And I'm not saying this because I'm trying to devalue people who are Jewish,

  137. but this text doesn't have any sting to us.

  138. And the text is supposed to have some sting.

  139. And in fact, for some of us who are anti-Semitic, it's just, oh yeah, those Jewish people.

  140. Yeah, yeah, Paul.

  141. Yeah, you know, yeah, Bible.

  142. Get on those Jewish people.

  143. And so for some people, it ends up just being something that allows us to point fingers at somebody else.

  144. And the Bible is never written so that we can point a finger at somebody else.

  145. It's never written for us to point fingers.

  146. And so we need to have a bit of a sense here about what Paul's doing.

  147. And so we're going to make a word substitution because Paul is talking about how good things that God has actually provided get twisted by us

  148. and end up making us abhorrent to people outside and end up actually keeping God far away.

  149. It's like those of you who took the early alpha courses.

  150. And so we're going to make a word for us.

  151. It ends up just being a way to keep God at a distance.

  152. So what we're going to do is that when we read the word Jew, I'm going to say Anglican.

  153. And if you're a guest here this morning, you're Roman Catholic, what you should do is you should say Roman Catholic.

  154. And if you're a guest here this morning and you're from a Pentecostal church, you should say Pentecostal to yourself.

  155. And if you're Baptist, you should say Baptist.

  156. And if you think that your denomination doesn't fit here, then this text is really for you.

  157. Like God has led you here this morning just to realize that, you know, Reformed Presbyterian can't put that in.

  158. Yes, you've got to put in Reformed Presbyterian, whatever it is.

  159. I'm going to say Anglican because it would actually be really rude for me to say Baptist when I'm an Anglican.

  160. So I'm going to say Anglican.

  161. So now listen to this text now in light of this.

  162. It will actually start to make a little bit more.

  163. It's still going to be confusing, a bit dark, but it will make a bit more sense.

  164. So Romans 2, 17.

  165. But if you call yourself an Anglican and rely on the Bible and boast in God and know his will and approve what is excellent because you are instructed from the Bible.

  166. And if you are sure that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of children, having in the Bible the embodiment of knowledge and truth.

  167. You then who teach others.

  168. Do you not teach yourself while you preach against stealing?

  169. Do you steal?

  170. You who say that one must not commit adultery.

  171. Do you commit adultery?

  172. You who abhor idols.

  173. Do you rob temples?

  174. You who boast in the Bible dishonor God by breaking what the Bible says.

  175. For as it is written, the name of God is blasphemed amongst people who hang out in bars because of you.

  176. Now that's in terms of a bit of a different text and some of us might be a little bit insulted by it.

  177. But it becomes a different text when we put ourselves into it rather than thinking about how it refers to somebody else.

  178. Andrew, could you put up the first point for me, please?

  179. Baptism, church attendance, and Bible knowledge can immunize me against God.

  180. Baptism, church attendance, and Bible knowledge can immunize me against God.

  181. See, part of the problem with this text is, like, many of the things in this text are good things.

  182. Like, shouldn't we rely on the Bible?

  183. And shouldn't we try to know what his will is?

  184. And shouldn't we try to approve what is excellent?

  185. And shouldn't we be instructed by the Bible?

  186. And if we've done that, shouldn't we be willing to talk to the blind and try to bring light into darkness?

  187. And shouldn't we try to be a teacher of the foolish and a teacher of children?

  188. And shouldn't we acknowledge that the Bible is the embodiment of knowledge and truth?

  189. Like, George, isn't that what it's supposed to be?

  190. Well, it is.

  191. And part of the key in the text is the two things.

  192. It's how the text ends and how the text begins.

  193. You see, the fact of the matter is that sometimes the Bible really is very hard for us to understand.

  194. Like, the Bible isn't just put out by some slick marketing guy or gal who's trying to figure out how to get a good Twitter thing that will be in 120 characters so that it can be retweeted and easily digestible.

  195. And the fact that some parts of the Bible just require us to really think about it.

  196. And sometimes it requires us to seek, like I had to seek the guidance of older, wiser Christians who knew the languages and all to try to get a bit of a handle on what it's talking about.

  197. But it can be very, very, it can be difficult.

  198. But in the beginning of the text, it talks about relying on the Bible and boasting in God.

  199. And at the end of the text, it obviously is the case that they're relying on the Bible and boasting in God in a way that it shouldn't be.

  200. And so here's a little bit about what it's a very, very fine line.

  201. It's as if you're going along a mountain ridge and you can go down one side or the other.

  202. And it makes a big difference whether you're going down one side or the other.

  203. Maybe one side is into the wilderness where you'll get lost and end up suffering grievous harm.

  204. And the other side is where you'll go back to where your campsite is and you'll have a wonderful meal with your friends and just be so happy that you've had a wonderful day.

  205. And, you know, it's a little bit of a way to maybe get at it is two different ways to boast in your wife.

  206. I'm going to use that as an example because I'm a man.

  207. I am so grateful that Louise has put up with me for 34 years.

  208. In a couple of weeks, we'll have our 34th anniversary.

  209. In late September, 40 years ago in late September was the first time I ever laid eyes on her.

  210. And I thought she was the most lovely person I'd ever seen.

  211. And I really wanted to meet her.

  212. And I still think she's the most lovely person.

  213. And I'm just so glad that she's married to me and she's put up with me.

  214. And it fills me with gratitude.

  215. It really does.

  216. And I've probably embarrassed her and she'll be upset with me afterwards.

  217. But hopefully she's not too upset because it's true and it's heartfelt.

  218. How does a man with a trophy wife talk about his wife?

  219. Very, very different.

  220. A rich man with a trophy wife will boast in his wife in a very, very, very different way.

  221. Both will talk about how excellent their wives are.

  222. But everything about it is completely different.

  223. And, you know, relying on the law and relying on the Bible.

  224. See, here's the thing that the Bible is going to get.

  225. I'm going to try to give you another illustration about this.

  226. Imagine for a second that I was to write out for my kids.

  227. Louise and I, let's say, we're going to be gone for, let's say we're going for a month or two.

  228. And, like, when we were in our previous church, we lived in a rectory.

  229. And so people would drop around all, you know, would drop around.

  230. And quite a bit.

  231. In fact, sometimes they would just come and walk into our house without knocking.

  232. But that's a separate story.

  233. Louise would come downstairs.

  234. There's somebody sitting in our living room.

  235. But that's a whole other story.

  236. Anyway, so imagine that we sit down and we write out a list of instructions about how it is that you handle guests.

  237. And the kids get all excited.

  238. And every day they read the instructions about handle guests.

  239. And every day they go through brief ceremonies or rituals about how to handle guests.

  240. I'll be the guest.

  241. This is what you say.

  242. And then you say this.

  243. And I say this.

  244. And you say this.

  245. And I say this.

  246. And actually, it becomes, in a sense, part of their identity.

  247. It's something that helps to form and structure their day.

  248. That every day they read about from the letter from dad and mom about how to handle guests and what to do when guests come.

  249. But then when a guest actually comes, they might hate it.

  250. Because guests are messy.

  251. They don't follow the script.

  252. They show up.

  253. They sit in your room.

  254. You know, it's a lot easier just to read the instructions about handling guests.

  255. And having ritual and reenacting how you should handle guests.

  256. For some people, it becomes that that's what they really like.

  257. But actually, having a guest is a pain in the butt.

  258. And that's what can happen with God.

  259. You know, it can be, and I'm going to use an Anglican example, that Anglicans can get all caught up.

  260. You would not believe the controversies that can happen about, you know, in the Lord's Supper and what words you should say after the words of institution.

  261. And whether the Gloria, we don't do the Gloria, so some of you don't even know what that is.

  262. Whether the Gloria for a communion service should be at the beginning of the service or whether it should be at the end.

  263. And whether you should wear this robe or that robe, or whether you should lift your hands this much or this much, or not lift your hands at all.

  264. Or whether you should bow or never bow.

  265. And there's a whole pile of big things about it.

  266. But the fact of the matter is, why did Jesus institute baptism?

  267. I mean, sorry, the Lord's Supper.

  268. Why did he institute Lord's Supper?

  269. It was the whole, if you read the whole gospel, the implication is that when we celebrate communion later on, that Jesus is present.

  270. The Bible says that we're two or more present.

  271. Jesus is in their midst.

  272. It's all about, we gather to be present with Jesus in the company of his people.

  273. And you do communion to remember that Jesus died on the cross for us.

  274. That when we put our faith and trust in Jesus, we enter into a covenant that Jesus has made available for people like us to enter into a covenant.

  275. And that God will never let us go and that Jesus is coming back.

  276. And it's all about Jesus.

  277. It's not just about us following instructions about it.

  278. Like, in a sense, it's all about being open to God.

  279. That God might actually show up.

  280. That God might actually be real.

  281. And so what this text is saying is that there's ways.

  282. And in fact, actually, later on in Romans chapter 10, you can look at it if you want.

    Romans 10 chapter mention

  283. Romans chapter 10, verse 4.

    Romans 10:4

  284. Paul, in fact, like, because he keeps following up his argument.

  285. He says that Christ is the end of the law.

  286. That everything in the Old Testament is pointing to Jesus.

  287. Everything in the Old Testament is pointing to the fact that God would send a deliverer and that that's Jesus.

  288. Everything is all about that and receiving him.

  289. Not just going through ceremonies to enact what happens when the Messiah comes,

  290. but that when the Messiah comes that you recognize him and you receive him.

  291. The guest shows up.

  292. And he's sovereign and he's messy.

  293. But everything's about him.

  294. Everything's about him.

  295. And so this Bible text is saying that, you know, we can be baptized, we can attend church,

  296. and we can know the Bible, and there's ways of doing that that actually immunize us against God.

  297. That it ends up being that the Bible and baptism and church attendance ends up becoming a way of justifying yourself

  298. and me justifying myself, and it's all about my self-righteousness,

  299. and it's all about me being moral and me being moral in the ways that I want to be moral,

  300. and it ends up sort of being all about me or my tribe

  301. and not about God.

  302. And this is true of liberal churches, which have their own problems,

  303. but it's also, it can end up being in Orthodox churches.

  304. Like, it's really odd.

  305. Like, in many Reform-type churches, which talk about election,

  306. and election is this wonderful truth that God actually calls us.

  307. It's that when we, like, if today the Holy Spirit is putting a pressure on you

  308. and you realize that it's time for you to give your life to Jesus,

  309. it's never that you think of this before God does,

  310. but that God is always calling you.

  311. That every single person you meet today,

  312. even if they complete, even if the mention of God makes them fly into a rage,

  313. that you will not meet a single person today

  314. that God, in a sense, is not right beside them saying,

  315. I've sent my son to die for you.

  316. I'm really hoping that you will turn to him and come to me

  317. so that you can be my adopted child and I can be your heavenly father.

  318. You will not meet a single person that God is not calling that to.

  319. But for some people, the doctrine of election ends up becoming something

  320. that you have to try to figure out what you have to do

  321. to show that you're elected or have a particular feeling.

  322. And in an odd way, that whole doctrine of election

  323. ends up being a way to immunize us against God,

  324. to sort of justify us doing all sorts of things

  325. that we just completely miss it.

  326. But it becomes a way of keeping God distant

  327. because we're looking for the proof of it or something,

  328. or we have to feel it,

  329. or we have to be worthy of it,

  330. and it has nothing to do with worthiness,

  331. has nothing to do with any of those things,

  332. and it becomes a doctrine that keeps us far from God.

  333. You could go on and on and on and on,

  334. that unless you have the certain feelings and certain,

  335. you know, in certain traditions,

  336. I was at a Christian weekend a couple of weeks,

  337. a couple of years ago,

  338. and it really struck me that people there,

  339. unless they felt they had an emotional experience

  340. that involved tears,

  341. that they could not know that God loved them

  342. or that Jesus was their Savior.

  343. And it ended up being a very odd type of time

  344. where you could really see that they spent the whole time

  345. trying to work up certain experiences and feelings.

  346. And they might be horrified to think

  347. that they've taken the Bible

  348. and their confidence in the Bible

  349. and used it in such a way to actually keep God distant.

  350. Now they're looking for a certain experience,

  351. not Jesus,

  352. not God.

  353. And in fact, they'd look down their noses

  354. at people who say that they've come to trust Jesus

  355. as their Savior and their Lord,

  356. who haven't wept those tears or had that experience.

  357. It would lead them to feel superior

  358. and look down their nose.

  359. Just as many Anglicans will look down their nose

  360. and feel superior at others

  361. because they don't wear the robes,

  362. they don't have the liturgy,

  363. they don't have this.

  364. There's an old joke that we Anglicans

  365. are very, very open-minded.

  366. We understand that many people worship God

  367. in whatever way that they choose

  368. and we worship whatever way that makes right to them

  369. and we worship God in the way

  370. that he's told us to worship God.

  371. So, you know, we're following God

  372. and the rest just are following their own.

  373. It's all sorts of ways

  374. to look down your nose at other people

  375. and therefore, you're actually hearing the Bible

  376. and using church membership

  377. and good Bible knowledge to be superior,

  378. to make yourself right with God,

  379. to look down the nose of others

  380. and keep God distant.

  381. So, some of you might say,

  382. oh, by the way,

  383. just that one little phrase

  384. about robbing temples,

  385. what that's all about is

  386. that we know,

  387. we all know

  388. that we shouldn't have an idol up here.

  389. We shouldn't have Venus

  390. or Zeus

  391. or Hermes

  392. or Adonis

  393. or any of these other Greek gods

  394. and goddesses up here.

  395. We all know that that's,

  396. we should never have that.

  397. But how many of us

  398. throughout the week

  399. worship Venus?

  400. I mean, what's pornography about

  401. other than worshipping the goddess Venus

  402. and the goddess Eros

  403. and paying them homage

  404. and serving them?

  405. And we would never have a statue

  406. for mammon up here,

  407. but how many of us,

  408. and it's not necessarily

  409. the people with more money,

  410. how many of us, in fact,

  411. worship the god mammon

  412. and pay him homage?

  413. One of the guys

  414. that gives me a hard time

  415. at Starbucks,

  416. he, whenever I see him

  417. with his Lotto 649 tickets,

  418. you can see why I don't make any,

  419. nobody comes to faith through me,

  420. I say to him,

  421. ah, you're worshipping

  422. the goddess Fortune today,

  423. paying her homage

  424. with your Lotto 649 tickets.

  425. And he gets grumpy

  426. and he'll come back at me

  427. later on about something,

  428. but we don't go to temples

  429. to worship them,

  430. but do we secretly

  431. come in to rob them

  432. so that in the secret places

  433. of our heart

  434. we worship those idols?

  435. You see,

  436. in all of these things,

  437. what Paul,

  438. this is all part of a long argument

  439. from Paul,

  440. and a long argument

  441. from Paul

  442. is that we need

  443. a righteousness from God

  444. that will make us right with God,

  445. that we need God to act

  446. because we can't fix ourselves

  447. to make ourselves right with God.

  448. We need God to act.

  449. There is no way

  450. that we can make ourselves

  451. right with God,

  452. and that that's not only true

  453. for people who are part

  454. of the gay pride parade,

  455. and it's not only true

  456. for people who are,

  457. every night they're closing the bar

  458. and they stagger home drunk,

  459. but it's also true

  460. for people who go

  461. to Reformed Presbyterian churches

  462. and Pentecostal churches

  463. and Vineyard churches

  464. and Anglican churches,

  465. that everybody

  466. has to understand

  467. that they need God

  468. and they have to receive

  469. something that only God

  470. can do for them.

  471. Everybody has to,

  472. and that's what Paul's trying to,

  473. he's going through

  474. a whole series

  475. of different scenarios,

  476. trying to leave nobody out,

  477. that they will come

  478. to realize that unless God

  479. acts with effective power

  480. in a way that's right,

  481. we can't be right with God.

  482. God has to act

  483. with effective power

  484. in a way that is right,

  485. to make us right with himself,

  486. and he's done it in Jesus.

  487. So some of you might say,

  488. George, this is,

  489. okay, well,

  490. this is a different take,

  491. and I know you're going to talk

  492. about the next few verses,

  493. but George,

  494. are you saying

  495. that you sin less

  496. than other people?

  497. Like, you're talking

  498. as if you understand

  499. this text,

  500. and you've seen

  501. through what's going on.

  502. Are you saying

  503. you're superior

  504. because you've seen

  505. what's going on?

  506. That's, by the way,

  507. always a great temptation

  508. for us.

  509. It's one of the things

  510. that just shows us

  511. the depth of our sin

  512. is that even at moments

  513. when we have

  514. a real aha moment

  515. and breakthrough with God

  516. that instantly

  517. we can feel better

  518. than other people.

  519. Lord, have mercy.

  520. Lord, have mercy.

  521. But are you saying, George,

  522. that you sin less?

  523. Or that people

  524. who hear this sermon

  525. are going to sin less

  526. than other people?

  527. And if I'm reading

  528. this correctly,

  529. isn't the Bible

  530. warning people against you?

  531. In fact, George,

  532. are you saying

  533. that the Bible

  534. is one of those

  535. really, really cynical texts

  536. that warns people

  537. against itself

  538. and is sort of like

  539. just a really cynical

  540. type of thing?

  541. No, that's...

  542. This is where

  543. seeing the really weird thing,

  544. because this was already...

  545. The first few verses

  546. are just puzzling.

  547. But all of a sudden,

  548. it seems to us

  549. that out of the blue,

  550. God's...

  551. Paul's talking about circumcision.

  552. How does circumcision

  553. help this text,

  554. this dilemma?

  555. And it's like

  556. a puzzling type of thing.

  557. And it's...

  558. Here's one of those things

  559. where the parts of the Bible

  560. sometimes that are most weird

  561. can often be the type

  562. that the texts

  563. that are actually going to help us

  564. to get to understand

  565. if we're patient with them.

  566. So let's look at Romans.

  567. This...

  568. What happens?

  569. So Paul's...

  570. Romans 17 to 24,

  571. chapter 2,

  572. now verse 25 and following,

  573. where he talks about circumcision.

  574. It goes like this.

  575. For circumcision...

  576. So it's just gone

  577. verse 24.

  578. Remember,

  579. for as it is written,

  580. the name of God

  581. is blasphemed

  582. among the Gentiles

  583. because of you.

  584. That's one of the literary clues

  585. to help us to understand

  586. that all those good things

  587. that he was talking about,

  588. that somehow these good things

  589. have gotten rotten.

  590. they've gone putrid,

  591. that there's something in there

  592. which is of death

  593. because, you know,

  594. the Bible's telling him

  595. to re-look at these things

  596. and try to understand these things

  597. because verse 24,

  598. and he quotes the Bible

  599. to let us know

  600. that this is the case.

  601. And so verse 25,

  602. he continues,

  603. for...

  604. In other words,

  605. it's following on from this.

  606. For circumcision indeed

  607. is a value

  608. if you obey the law.

  609. But if you break the law,

  610. your circumcision

  611. becomes uncircumcision.

  612. But one moment,

  613. just before we read any further,

  614. we already understand

  615. that nobody keeps the law.

  616. Does that mean

  617. that everybody's uncircumcised?

  618. That everybody...

  619. And maybe here,

  620. if you're gonna...

  621. And later on we'll see,

  622. but...

  623. Well, I'll just read

  624. with circumcision,

  625. but you might want to put

  626. in the word baptism there

  627. rather than circumcision.

  628. So if a man

  629. who is uncircumcised,

  630. verse 26,

  631. keeps the precepts of the law,

  632. will not his uncircumcision

  633. be regarded as circumcision?

  634. Then he who is physically

  635. uncircumcised

  636. but keeps the law

  637. will condemn

  638. you who have the written code.

  639. And here what this word

  640. condemn means is

  641. not that they're a judge,

  642. but that they give evidence.

  643. That's what it means here.

  644. In other words,

  645. it would be as if...

  646. One of the things,

  647. if you...

  648. I don't know how many of you

  649. have ever lived

  650. in really small towns,

  651. like really small towns.

  652. When we lived in Eganville,

  653. I think they advertised

  654. a population of 2,000,

  655. but it was probably

  656. less than that.

  657. And there was this young guy

  658. that our family knew,

  659. and he was getting a little bit,

  660. putting on a little bit of weight.

  661. He was only like 13 or 12

  662. or something like that.

  663. And his parents told him

  664. that he wasn't allowed

  665. to eat potato chips

  666. and other types of things.

  667. And I guess all the time

  668. they would tell him,

  669. you're not allowed

  670. to eat these things

  671. after school.

  672. So one day,

  673. he'd bought himself

  674. a big bag of potato chips.

  675. And on his way home,

  676. he stopped,

  677. and it was a nice sunny day,

  678. and he stopped at a bench

  679. and he ate the bag

  680. of potato chips.

  681. He didn't realize

  682. that a photographer

  683. from the Eganville Leader

  684. took a picture of him

  685. eating a bag of potato chips

  686. on a sunny spring afternoon.

  687. I think it was spring.

  688. And so, you know,

  689. he's like an 11-year-old,

  690. 12-year-old,

  691. whatever he was.

  692. He never read

  693. the Eganville Leader.

  694. And so, you know,

  695. the Eganville Leader

  696. comes out a couple of days

  697. from now,

  698. and his mom says,

  699. oh, I almost said

  700. the guy's name,

  701. which would be bad.

  702. Oh, son,

  703. you know we've told you

  704. not to eat bags

  705. of potato chips

  706. on your way home.

  707. You don't do that.

  708. No, no, mom.

  709. I don't do that at all.

  710. Well, look what's here

  711. in the Eganville Leader.

  712. Who's this person

  713. eating potato chips

  714. in the afternoon

  715. on their way home?

  716. So this, in a sense,

  717. that picture condemns him.

  718. In other words,

  719. by giving evidence.

  720. And that's what's meant here.

  721. Okay, that's how

  722. you have to understand it.

  723. So when it says here

  724. in verse 27,

  725. so verse 26,

  726. so if a man

  727. who is uncircumcised

  728. keeps the precepts

  729. of the law,

  730. will not his uncircumcision

  731. be regarded as circumcision?

  732. We'll talk about that

  733. in a moment.

  734. But then verse 27,

  735. then he who is physically

  736. uncircumcised

  737. but keeps the law

  738. will condemn

  739. you who have

  740. the written code

  741. and uncircumcision

  742. but break the law.

  743. In other words,

  744. what it's saying here

  745. is that in heaven,

  746. there'll be lots of people

  747. in heaven

  748. who've given their lives

  749. to Jesus

  750. but they've never

  751. been baptized.

  752. Okay, and in heaven

  753. and in hell,

  754. there'll be lots of people

  755. who are baptized

  756. but haven't given

  757. their life to Jesus.

  758. That's to sort of

  759. make it a little bit more

  760. like relevant to us.

  761. If you've given

  762. your life to Jesus,

  763. you should be baptized,

  764. by the way.

  765. You should seek

  766. to be obedient to baptism.

  767. But there'll be people

  768. in heaven

  769. who've given their lives

  770. to Jesus,

  771. never got around

  772. to baptism

  773. or whatever happened,

  774. just didn't happen,

  775. but they're in heaven

  776. because the key thing

  777. is something that went on

  778. in the center

  779. of who you are.

  780. Not whether or not

  781. water got,

  782. you know,

  783. not whether or not,

  784. oh, you know,

  785. you weren't really baptized

  786. because you got baptized

  787. as an infant

  788. because you didn't go

  789. underneath the water

  790. the proper way

  791. or, you know,

  792. like it's not about

  793. somehow getting the water

  794. thing right

  795. or even the water

  796. itself

  797. that the relevance of that

  798. has to do with

  799. something internal.

  800. That's what the Bible

  801. is trying to get at.

  802. Verse 28,

  803. for no one is a Jew,

  804. no one is an Anglican

  805. who is merely one outwardly,

  806. nor is circumcision

  807. or baptism

  808. outward and physical,

  809. but an Anglican

  810. is one inwardly,

  811. but actually here really

  812. a member of the covenant people,

  813. that's here where

  814. it breaks down,

  815. is one inwardly

  816. and circumcision

  817. or baptism

  818. is a matter of the heart

  819. by the Holy Spirit,

  820. not by the letter.

  821. His and her praise

  822. is not from human beings

  823. but from God.

  824. So here,

  825. if you could put up

  826. the next point, Andrew,

  827. my heart

  828. needs to be circumcised

  829. and baptized.

  830. The Bible says,

  831. my heart

  832. needs to be circumcised

  833. and baptized.

  834. And by the way,

  835. Paul will later on

  836. in Romans 6

  837. make this connection

  838. between baptism

  839. and circumcision himself.

  840. But as you'll see

  841. in a moment,

  842. it's saying that

  843. my heart

  844. needs to be circumcised.

  845. My heart

  846. needs to be baptized.

  847. but when I say this,

  848. remember I began

  849. this sermon

  850. with the story

  851. of me in the Starbucks

  852. and this couple,

  853. both but 40,

  854. yoga mats

  855. and sort of

  856. complimenting me

  857. in a sense,

  858. wanting to start

  859. a conversation with me

  860. because I must be deep

  861. and more authentic

  862. because I'm writing

  863. in a journal

  864. with a pen.

  865. pen,

  866. I just can't type

  867. actually.

  868. I do like paper

  869. and pen

  870. and that's partially

  871. because I'm old

  872. and I can't type.

  873. So is this text

  874. saying,

  875. George,

  876. you've just got

  877. to be more deep?

  878. You've got to be

  879. more deep.

  880. But that's what it means

  881. when I say that

  882. my heart needs

  883. to be circumcised

  884. and baptized.

  885. Is that just saying

  886. that you can't be

  887. just focused on externals?

  888. It is partially saying that

  889. but you've got to be deeper

  890. as a person

  891. and you've got to get

  892. in touch with your feelings

  893. and maybe get in touch

  894. with your body

  895. and you've got to be

  896. in touch with your history

  897. and you've got to be

  898. more reflective

  899. and you've got to think

  900. about your family

  901. of origin

  902. and is that what

  903. this text is saying?

  904. Not at all.

  905. Not even remotely.

  906. Not even remotely.

  907. Andrew,

  908. could you put up

  909. the next point?

  910. The first point

  911. was that

  912. the point just before this

  913. was that my heart

  914. needs to be circumcised

  915. and baptized

  916. but the text

  917. is trying to get us

  918. to understand

  919. that only the Holy Spirit

  920. can circumcise

  921. and baptize

  922. my heart.

  923. A journal and a pen

  924. doesn't baptize

  925. my heart.

  926. A yoga mat

  927. doesn't baptize

  928. my heart.

  929. taking communion

  930. in and of itself

  931. doesn't baptize

  932. my heart.

  933. Doesn't circumcise

  934. my heart.

  935. Look at verse 29

  936. again.

  937. But a Jew

  938. or an Anglican

  939. or a Christian

  940. is one inwardly

  941. and circumcision

  942. is a matter of the heart

  943. by the Holy Spirit

  944. not by the letter.

  945. His praise

  946. is not from man

  947. or human beings

  948. but from God.

  949. See,

  950. we have to understand

  951. the heart

  952. here doesn't mean

  953. feelings.

  954. I've heard

  955. lots of Christians

  956. say that the biggest

  957. journey in the

  958. Christian faith

  959. I should have

  960. measured it.

  961. I can't remember

  962. if it's 12 inches

  963. from here to here

  964. or 18 inches.

  965. I know some people

  966. have really long necks

  967. but whatever

  968. some people

  969. I don't know

  970. is that a foot

  971. or 18 inches?

  972. Well, I'll say a foot

  973. but maybe it's more.

  974. They say the longest

  975. journey in the Christian faith

  976. where the Christian faith

  977. begins is where

  978. the 12 inch journey

  979. from here to here

  980. and what they mean

  981. is that you have feelings.

  982. That's not reading

  983. the text correctly.

  984. It's not telling you

  985. to have certain feelings.

  986. That's actually

  987. sort of a real trap

  988. that a lot of Christians

  989. fall into

  990. to try to have

  991. the right feelings.

  992. The heart

  993. in the Bible

  994. is always the command

  995. center of who you are.

  996. The command center

  997. of who you are.

  998. And, you know,

  999. that command center

  1000. it's partially

  1001. it's, you know,

  1002. how you understand

  1003. what to do

  1004. is partially

  1005. from feelings

  1006. partially from

  1007. you know,

  1008. emotions

  1009. partially from

  1010. a sense of beauty

1011. or a sense of love

  1012. and partially

  1013. sometimes it's a matter

  1014. of thinking

  1015. sometimes it's a matter

  1016. of knowing

  1017. what's right and wrong.

  1018. There's a variety

  1019. of things that

1020. work at the command center

  1021. of who we are

  1022. because human beings

  1023. are deep and complex

  1024. and emotions

  1025. and the mind

  1026. and morals

  1027. and beauty

  1028. all have an impact

  1029. in terms of us

  1030. making decisions

  1031. but the heart

  1032. doesn't refer to

  1033. a certain type

  1034. of feeling

  1035. it's always referring

  1036. to the command center

  1037. of who we are.

  1038. And this image

  1039. of circumcision

  1040. which is so weird

  1041. so it's seen

  1042. that the command center

  1043. of who Sinclair is

  1044. has to be circumcised.

  1045. In the ancient world

  1046. when the Jewish people

  1047. were first given

  1048. the right of circumcision

  1049. there were other

  1050. ancient peoples

  1051. that practiced circumcision

  1052. pagans who practiced

  1053. circumcision

  1054. and when they practiced

  1055. circumcision

  1056. I mean scholars

1057. now looking back on it

  1058. and trying to read

  1059. the documents

  1060. think that it symbolized

  1061. one of two things.

  1062. It symbolized

  1063. in a sense

1064. a token of human sacrifice

  1065. that when that part

  1066. of the male anatomy

  1067. was cut off

  1068. it's symbolizing

  1069. that a human being

  1070. has died for you

  1071. and sometimes

  1072. it was used

  1073. to symbolize

  1074. they think

  1075. that the power

  1076. of life

  1077. that that's sacrificed

  1078. on your behalf.

1079. But for the Jewish people

  1080. when they're given

  1081. the right of circumcision

  1082. in Genesis chapter 17

    Genesis 17 chapter mention

  1083. and then later on

  1084. in the law

  1085. they're given

  1086. the right of circumcision

  1087. and it's all

  1088. from a different

  1089. it's all within

  1090. the context

  1091. of a covenant

  1092. and it's very interesting

  1093. it's in your groin

  1094. and grace

  1095. if you look at

  1096. Genesis 15

  1097. and then read

  1098. Genesis 17

  1099. you get both

  1100. aspects of it

  1101. but it's as if

  1102. God enters into

  1103. a relationship

  1104. with the people

  1105. of Israel

  1106. and within this

  1107. relationship

  1108. he says

1109. I will be your God

  1110. and you will be

  1111. my people

  1112. and if you

  1113. don't act

  1114. as my people

  1115. then there's going

  1116. to be these punishments

  1117. these things

  1118. that will befall you

  1119. if you break

  1120. a covenant

  1121. with me

  1122. if you break

  1123. the ten commandments

  1124. if you break

  1125. them with me

  1126. and there's this scene

  1127. in Genesis 15

  1128. where an animal

  1129. is killed

  1130. and the parts

  1131. of the animal

1132. are set in both sides

  1133. and then you have

  1134. this symbolic

  1135. acting out

  1136. as if they walk

  1137. between the killed

  1138. parts of the animal

1139. and then in Genesis 17

  1140. it's all come

  1141. to a conclusion

  1142. as circumcision

  1143. is given to them

  1144. and circumcision

  1145. is in a sense

  1146. an acting out

  1147. of the covenant

  1148. that if you fail

  1149. to keep this covenant

  1150. with God

  1151. you are circumcised

  1152. to say

  1153. I will enter

  1154. into covenant

  1155. with you God

1156. you will be my God

1157. I will be your child

  1158. and I know

  1159. that you will provide

  1160. for me

1161. and you will do this

  1162. and if I break

  1163. the covenant

1164. I will be cut off

  1165. I will be like

  1166. this dead animal

  1167. that's killed

  1168. and

  1169. actually

  1170. could you put up

  1171. Romans 1 16 to 17

1172. you want to say this

  1173. with me please

  1174. this is where

  1175. we have to understand

  1176. now why the circumcision

  1177. image comes here

  1178. I know it's 40 minutes

1179. I have to wrap this up

  1180. could you read this

  1181. with me

1182. for I am not ashamed

  1183. of the gospel

1184. for it is the power

  1185. of God

  1186. for salvation

  1187. to everyone

  1188. who believes

  1189. to the Jew first

1190. and also to the Greek

  1191. for in the gospel

  1192. the righteousness

  1193. of God

  1194. is revealed

  1195. from faith

  1196. to faith

  1197. as it is written

  1198. the righteous

  1199. shall live

  1200. by faith

  1201. so what we see

  1202. in this text

  1203. is that

  1204. it is the power

  1205. of God

  1206. that God

  1207. needs to act

  1208. with effective power

  1209. and he needs

  1210. to act

  1211. with effective power

  1212. in a way

  1213. that's right

1214. and he has to act

  1215. with effective power

  1216. in a way

  1217. that's right

  1218. to make us

  1219. right with him

  1220. and we're going

  1221. to understand

  1222. and receive this

  1223. by faith

  1224. in other words

  1225. not by anything

  1226. that we've done

  1227. but by God

  1228. doing something

  1229. for us

  1230. that we can't

  1231. do ourselves

  1232. so what is it

  1233. that we understand

  1234. about the person

  1235. of Jesus

  1236. person of Jesus

  1237. is he's come

  1238. from God

  1239. and he gets

  1240. cut off

  1241. on our behalf

  1242. in a sense

  1243. he

  1244. circumcision

  1245. is like reading

  1246. the instructions

  1247. of the coming

  1248. of the guests

  1249. but when Jesus

  1250. dies upon the cross

  1251. before that

  1252. in John's gospel

  1253. he's introduced

1254. as the Lamb of God

  1255. who takes away

1256. the sin of the world

  1257. and on the cross

  1258. Jesus cries out

  1259. my God

  1260. my God

  1261. why hast thou

  1262. forsaken me

  1263. and Jesus

  1264. is cut off

  1265. from God

  1266. not because of

  1267. what he has done

  1268. in and of himself

  1269. but he dies

  1270. in my place

  1271. I deserve

  1272. to be cut off

  1273. from God

  1274. because I have

  1275. broken and violated

  1276. his moral laws

  1277. I have used

  1278. even the Bible

  1279. in a way

  1280. to further

  1281. my self-righteousness

  1282. and my boasting

  1283. in myself

  1284. and I have used

  1285. the Bible

  1286. even the good things

  1287. that come from him

  1288. in such a way

  1289. and I deserve

  1290. to be cut off

  1291. from God

  1292. I am cut off

  1293. from God

  1294. and Jesus

  1295. is cut off

  1296. from God

  1297. in my stead

1298. so that when I put

  1299. my faith and trust

  1300. in Jesus

  1301. he took

  1302. my cut offness

  1303. and in exchange

  1304. offers me

  1305. his status

  1306. as God's child

  1307. God's son

  1308. and what he does

  1309. for me

  1310. in the cross

  1311. has to be applied

  1312. to me

1313. only God can do it

  1314. and the Holy Spirit

  1315. does it

  1316. by in a sense

  1317. circumcising

  1318. my heart

  1319. what he does

  1320. for me

  1321. enters into me

  1322. as I enter

  1323. into him

  1324. what's the symbolism

  1325. of baptism

  1326. the symbolism

  1327. of baptism

  1328. which takes

  1329. the place

  1330. of circumcision

  1331. is that

  1332. I deserve

  1333. death

  1334. I will die

  1335. and I deserve

  1336. to die

  1337. and I am

  1338. separate from God

  1339. and I deserve

  1340. to be eternally

  1341. separate from God

  1342. and I can't fix

  1343. that myself

1344. and most of the time

  1345. I don't even want

  1346. to fix it

  1347. and Jesus

  1348. takes my death

  1349. and my doom

  1350. and dies

  1351. my death

  1352. and my doom

  1353. and if I put

  1354. my arms out

  1355. to him

  1356. he reaches down

  1357. from heaven

  1358. and takes me

  1359. to himself

  1360. and in that

  1361. unbelievable exchange

  1362. of faith

  1363. because I can't

  1364. even reach up

  1365. to Jesus

  1366. my arms are way

  1367. too small

  1368. but he can reach

  1369. me

  1370. and when he

  1371. reaches me

  1372. he takes

  1373. the death

  1374. and the doom

  1375. that I deserve

  1376. and on the cross

  1377. he dies

  1378. my death

  1379. he takes

  1380. upon himself

  1381. my doom

  1382. and as he

  1383. holds me

  1384. he gives me

  1385. his life

  1386. and his status

  1387. as God's child

  1388. forever

  1389. and that has

  1390. to come

  1391. only God

  1392. can do that

  1393. and put that

  1394. into the command

  1395. center of my life

  1396. the center

  1397. of who I am

  1398. Andrew

  1399. could you put up

  1400. the fourth point

  1401. please

  1402. having a circumcised

  1403. heart

  1404. does not mean

  1405. that I sin less

  1406. than other people

  1407. it means that I

  1408. by sheer grace

  1409. have been made

  1410. right with God

  1411. through Jesus Christ

  1412. having a circumcised

  1413. heart

  1414. does not mean

  1415. that I sin less

  1416. than other people

  1417. it means that I

  1418. by sheer grace

  1419. have been made

  1420. right with God

  1421. through Jesus Christ

  1422. God acts

  1423. with effective

  1424. power

  1425. in a way

  1426. that is right

  1427. to make me

  1428. right with himself

  1429. and as the gospel

  1430. grips us

  1431. this deep

  1432. seated

  1433. temptation

  1434. within us

  1435. to justify

  1436. ourselves

  1437. to keep

  1438. God

  1439. at a distance

  1440. you see the problem

  1441. is that when

  1442. religion

  1443. becomes

  1444. when church

  1445. membership

  1446. and baptism

  1447. in the Bible

  1448. all ends up

  1449. becoming a means

  1450. by which

  1451. we in a sense

  1452. are trying to

  1453. make ourselves

  1454. right with God

  1455. then when

  1456. sin

  1457. comes before us

  1458. well we're

  1459. completely and

  1460. utterly caught

  1461. because it

  1462. means that our

  1463. whole status

  1464. with God

  1465. is completely

  1466. and utterly

  1467. in question

  1468. and ruined

  1469. so we pretend

  1470. that we don't

  1471. we deny

  1472. we explain away

  1473. we ignore

  1474. we repress

  1475. we do all of

  1476. those types of

  1477. things because

  1478. we can't actually

  1479. face the fact

  1480. that we're doing

  1481. wrong

  1482. and that our

  1483. whole project

  1484. of trying to

  1485. make ourselves

  1486. right with God

  1487. is doomed

  1488. to failure

  1489. but as the gospel

  1490. grips us

  1491. there's this

  1492. odd dynamic

  1493. that can go

  1494. on in our

  1495. lives

  1496. as the gospel

  1497. grips us

  1498. as it grips

  1499. us

  1500. that we can

  1501. never make

  1502. ourselves

  1503. right with

  1504. God

  1505. that our

  1506. sanctification

  1507. is not our

  1508. justification

  1509. that we're

  1510. justified

  1511. and that only

  1512. God can make

  1513. us right with

  1514. himself

  1515. as that grips

  1516. us

  1517. that nothing

  1518. in my hands

  1519. I bring

  1520. simply to the

  1521. cross I cling

  1522. as that grips

  1523. us

  1524. and as people

  1525. point out

  1526. George you're

  1527. a sinner

  1528. do you know

  1529. what you did

  1530. do you know

  1531. whatever that

  1532. thought or that

  1533. thing that you

  1534. said

  1535. I mean part

  1536. of me wants

  1537. to deny

  1538. part of me

  1539. wants to

  1540. repress

  1541. part of me

  1542. but as the

  1543. gospel grips

  1544. me I can

  1545. say yes

  1546. I did that

  1547. that's why I

  1548. need a savior

  1549. that's why I

  1550. need a savior

  1551. and I am so

  1552. glad I am so

  1553. grateful that my

  1554. right standing

  1555. with God does

  1556. not depend upon

  1557. what I've done

  1558. I know it can

  1559. be hard for my

  1560. ego to be

  1561. acknowledged once

  1562. again that I've

  1563. done wrong

  1564. but there can be

  1565. this on one

  1566. hand desire to

  1567. make myself

  1568. to say to

  1569. God I'm

  1570. sorry but at

  1571. the same time

  1572. a growing

  1573. confidence that

  1574. that is yet

  1575. again proof that

  1576. I need a savior

  1577. that I'm gripped

  1578. by Jesus when I'm

  1579. gripped by the

  1580. gospel

  1581. let's stand

  1582. please

  1583. I meant what I

  1584. said earlier

  1585. we'll talk in a

  1586. couple of weeks

  1587. about the

  1588. doctrine of

  1589. election but the

  1590. way to understand

  1591. the doctrine of

  1592. election is that

  1593. every single

  1594. person that you

  1595. meet today

  1596. every single

  1597. person God is

  1598. in a sense right

  1599. beside them

  1600. talking to them

  1601. and say I

  1602. so long for

  1603. you to get

  1604. off of trying

  1605. to make yourself

  1606. righteous I

  1607. long for you to

  1608. come with empty

  1609. hands to your to

1610. my son so that I

  1611. will be your God

1612. and you will be my

  1613. people I so long

  1614. for you to call

1615. out to me to do

  1616. what only I can

  1617. do and I will

  1618. baptize the command

  1619. center the center

  1620. of who you are

  1621. I will circumcise

  1622. I will deal with

  1623. all of that I

  1624. will do that and

  1625. there is no person

  1626. that we meet today

  1627. that God is not

  1628. already calling to

  1629. them and he's

  1630. calling to you

  1631. and if you've been

  1632. trying to keep God

  1633. at a distance there's

  1634. no better time than

  1635. right now to rather

  1636. than keeping him at

  1637. a distance but to

  1638. stand with empty

  1639. hands and say

  1640. father with empty

  1641. hands I come

  1642. please baptize

  1643. with your

  1644. but may your

  1645. Holy Spirit

  1646. baptize my heart

  1647. may your Holy

  1648. Spirit circumcise
