  1. Father, I confess before you that Romans 3, 21 to 31

  2. is a deep and profound verse that speaks of mysteries

  3. that I cannot get my mind completely around.

  4. And I, Father, we confess before you that no human being can fully grasp

  5. the mystery of what your Son accomplished for us on the cross.

  6. So, Father, we thank you that it is not up to our minds

  7. to completely and utterly grasp what you have taught us through your word.

  8. You call us, Father, to use the best that is within us,

  9. but our best, Father, always depends upon your Holy Spirit,

  10. not only helping us to do the best, but to go beyond what our minds can do.

  11. And so, Father, we ask that you would bless us this morning

  12. by pouring out your Holy Spirit upon us

  13. so that we might hear your word about your Son

  14. addressed to your people in your city, in your world,

  15. and that we might hear it all to your glory.

  16. Father, do that wonderful work within us

  17. and pour out your Holy Spirit upon us.

  18. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

  19. Please be seated.

  20. So, when this church, the pastor moved away to Toronto

  21. and they were going to seek a new minister

  22. to replace the minister who'd left, Kent Doe,

  23. the bishop asked me if I would apply to this parish.

  24. And so, as part of the application process,

  25. I had to send in a resume.

  26. And as part of the resume, you know,

  27. I had to put down my experience and all that type of thing.

  28. And I can't remember, but there were a couple of questions

  29. that I had to answer that talked a little bit about

  30. my view of ministry and other things

  31. and sort of my aspirations and my plans and my hopes.

  32. And I submitted it.

  33. And after I submitted it, the parish decided

  34. they didn't even want to interview me.

  35. I'm not making that up.

  36. They didn't even want to interview me.

  37. And so that was that.

  38. They thought my resume, my experience,

  39. my aspirations didn't measure up to what they wanted.

  40. They wanted something different.

  41. And I'll tell you, maybe over coffee for some of you,

  42. but you might wonder how on earth it is

  43. that I ended up becoming the rector of the church

  44. if they didn't even want to interview me for the position.

  45. And there's lots of scars all over the place

  46. as part of that process.

  47. But at the end of the day,

  48. after about a year or so of them continuing to search,

  49. the bishop, with the permission of the wardens,

  50. now I'm talking, for those of you who aren't Anglican,

  51. and that's a little bit of Anglicanese.

  52. But basically, wardens are the people,

  53. two of the three people in the older Anglican structure

  54. that are the legal trustees of the church.

  55. And the bishop with the two legal trustees,

  56. I was imposed on the congregation

  57. against the congregation's will.

  58. And that's how I became the rector of this parish.

  59. And I mention that

  60. because it's actually a really helpful way

  61. for us to understand how the world views Christianity

  62. and how most people understand religion and spirituality.

  63. Because, in fact,

  64. how most of us understand,

  65. the natural way for us to understand religion and spirituality

  66. is something like us preparing a resume

  67. for whatever the higher power or whatever God is.

  68. We prepare some type of,

  69. you know, we're living our lives preparing a resume.

  70. And just as in resumes that we submit for jobs that we want,

  71. we leave out all of the naughty stuff that we've done.

  72. We put down,

  73. I mean, most people do,

  74. they leave out the naughty stuff,

  75. and they put down the things

  76. that they think they're particularly good

  77. and that meet the expectations.

  78. And usually there's a section for your aspirations.

  79. I mean, you haven't actually accomplished this yet,

  80. but you hope you accomplish it.

  81. And, you know,

  82. religions and spiritualities differ

  83. on what should be on the resume.

  84. And so part of the criticism of the world

  85. about the Christian resume

  86. is that the Christian resume is boring.

  87. Who on earth would want to have the Christian resume?

  88. Like, what's all of these hang-ups about sex?

  89. And why is it that, you know,

  90. the Christians are hung up about abortion

  91. and other types of things like that?

  92. And so,

  93. and then, of course,

  94. Muslims,

  95. they have their own list of resume

  96. that has to be accomplished,

  97. connected to the Quran,

  98. and other traditional religions

  99. have their own particular things

  100. that need to be on the resume

  101. for them to get the approval of their God.

  102. And those of us

  103. who are putting together

  104. their own spiritualities

  105. or what would be common in the world,

  106. they would just say

  107. that the content of the resume

  108. has to be completely different

  109. from everything

  110. that other traditional religions say,

  111. that maybe it should be

  112. that you don't go to Tim Hortons,

  113. but that you go to Bridgehead

  114. and you vote green.

  115. I mean, I don't know what it is,

  116. but you'll have your own particular

  117. different resume.

  118. But basically,

  119. every human normal,

  120. the natural tendency

  121. of the human mind,

  122. whether you're a pagan,

  123. a Muslim,

  124. those brought up in Christendom,

  125. Jews,

  126. postmodern people

  127. wandering around Ottawa,

  128. they basically conceive of,

  129. we basically conceive of religion

  130. and or spirituality

  131. as being composed of

  132. forming a resume

  133. for that time when we need it.

  134. And that's one of the reasons

  135. why that there are many people

  136. in the world

  137. who've completely and utterly

  138. given up on religion.

  139. They completely turn their back on it.

  140. They say,

  141. the whole idea

  142. that I have to provide

  143. some type of a resume

  144. to make it into,

  145. in God's favor

  146. is just completely abhorrent to them.

  147. They say,

  148. George, that's,

  149. you know,

  150. they might not say it to me directly,

  151. but internally they'll say,

  152. like,

  153. why in earth should anybody even bother?

  154. I'm just going to fail

  155. at any type of resume,

  156. you know,

  157. performance.

  158. And so,

  159. you know what?

  160. Sleep in on a Sunday,

  161. get up when you feel like getting up,

  162. there's football games

  163. on a Sunday afternoon,

  164. get out the chips,

  165. get out the beer,

  166. get out the hard stuff,

  167. get together with a few friends,

  168. and there's really not much more to life

  169. than having fun

  170. and having friends.

  171. And I,

  172. and I sense,

  173. you know,

  174. a plague

  175. on people who are spiritual,

  176. a plague on people

  177. who are religious,

  178. really the meaning of life

  179. is to completely ignore

  180. any attempt to make a resume,

  181. but just to have fun

  182. and,

  183. if possible,

  184. to have friends

  185. at the same time.

  186. And,

  187. and,

  188. and the Christian,

  189. and so often

  190. when Christians

  191. try to share the gospel

  192. in a context

  193. where we basically

  194. are looking at resume

  195. performance

  196. and many of our friends

  197. and coworkers

  198. have given up

  199. on the entire resume procedure

  200. completely and utterly,

  201. the Christian view

  202. actually seems to be

  203. a bad option

  204. because not only

  205. do we have to have

  206. the resume

  207. that involves things

  208. like sex

  209. and money

  210. and time

  211. and going to boring

  212. church services

  213. and all of that type of stuff,

  214. but at the end of the day,

  215. God just lets you in.

  216. And it's sort of

  217. a little bit like,

  218. George,

  219. the church didn't want

  220. to even interview you

  221. after they saw

  222. your resume,

  223. but the bishop

  224. just imposed you

  225. on the congregation.

  226. That's what it sounds like,

  227. all this stuff about Jesus

  228. and everything like that,

  229. is that God just picks

  230. a few people in the world

  231. and he says,

  232. okay,

  233. these guys,

  234. I'm going to impose

  235. these guys,

  236. I'm going to just

  237. pull them into heaven,

  238. doesn't matter what

  239. the resume says,

  240. I just want them

  241. and all these other

  242. poor suckers

  243. who are trying

  244. to build their resumes

  245. and it doesn't seem

  246. to make sense to people

  247. when we understand,

  248. if we come to the Bible

  249. and if we come to life

  250. from the perception

  251. of trying to build

  252. our resume,

  253. the Bible

  254. sort of makes sense

  255. sometimes when it

  256. talks about goodness,

  257. but then when it

  258. talks about the cross,

  259. and what Nora

  260. just read today,

  261. it just seems

  262. as if it's just

  263. God being unfair

  264. and picking some people

  265. and that's why

  266. many people choose

  267. to not be religious

  268. or spiritual at all

  269. because they said,

  270. I went all the way

  271. through life

  272. that when they picked teams,

  273. I was never picked first,

  274. I don't even want to get

  275. into this game with God.

  276. So,

  277. is that what the Bible

  278. teaches?

  279. There's many people

  280. who understand Christianity

  281. in terms of resume

  282. performance

  283. and writing.

  284. Is that what the Bible

  285. actually teaches?

  286. Is that what real

  287. Christianity is?

  288. The text today

  289. that Nora read

  290. is a very,

  291. very powerful

  292. alternative

  293. to all understandings

  294. of spirituality

  295. and religion

  296. as involving

  297. creating a resume.

  298. And so,

  299. it would be very helpful

  300. if you could

  301. have your Bibles,

  302. and I have to confess

  303. it in the sermon,

  304. I'm not going to use

  305. the King James Version,

  306. I want it to try to be

  307. as clear as possible,

  308. and in fact,

  309. in a moment,

  310. we're going to have

  311. a text up on a screen,

  312. but the Bible text

  313. speaks directly

  314. into this natural

  315. human tendency

  316. to understand

  317. that God wants us

  318. to create a resume

  319. so that we will be

  320. accepted for the position

  321. of being one of

  322. his favorites

  323. in heaven.

  324. And it's Romans

    Romans 3:21

  325. chapter 3,

  326. verses 21 and following,

  327. and here's how

  328. the text goes.

  329. Now,

  330. that is really,

  331. really,

  332. really complicated language,

  333. and it's not the way

  334. we usually speak,

  335. but we'll just go back

  336. and I'll just explain

  337. a few things,

  338. just very simple.

  339. When it says

  340. that the righteousness

  341. of God

  342. has been manifested

  343. apart from the law,

  344. what the righteousness

  345. of God

  346. is saying here

  347. is that just

  348. that God is right,

  349. and it's saying

  350. something deeper

  351. about God

  352. than that God is good.

  353. It's saying

  354. that God is right,

  355. and it's just,

  356. there's a rightness

  357. about God,

  358. and there's a rightness

  359. about God

  360. connected to morals,

  361. but there's a rightness

  362. to God

  363. connected to beauty,

  364. and there's a rightness

  365. to God

  366. connected to justice,

  367. and there's a rightness

  368. to God

  369. connected to mercy,

  370. and there's a rightness

  371. and a fittedness

  372. to God

  373. when it comes to truth,

  374. that there's just,

  375. that God,

  376. that God is right,

  377. and it far goes beyond

  378. just a moral code.

  379. There's just

  380. a rightness of God,

  381. the God

  382. who really does exist,

  383. a rightness to him,

  384. and the God

  385. who has always been,

  386. there's a rightness

  387. about God,

  388. and it's been like that

  389. from all eternity,

  390. but he manifested,

  391. he made clear

  392. his rightness

  393. in a very,

  394. very public way

  395. when he sent his son

  396. to earth

  397. to die upon the cross,

  398. and it's in his son

  399. dying upon the cross

  400. that we really see

  401. revealed to the world

  402. what God has always been,

  403. that there's something

  404. right about God,

  405. but now the rightness

  406. of God

  407. has been manifested,

  408. and when it says

  409. apart from the law,

  410. although the law

  411. and prophets

  412. bear witness to it,

  413. the righteousness

  414. of God

  415. through faith

  416. in Jesus Christ

  417. for all who believe,

  418. here it's saying

  419. that there's two

  420. different ways

  421. that people

  422. can read the Bible,

  423. and one way

  424. to read the Bible

  425. is to read the Bible

  426. from the perspective

  427. that I have to

  428. write a resume

  429. for God

  430. to approve of me,

  431. and that's one way

  432. to read the Bible.

  433. I come to the Bible

  434. with my natural

  435. human perspective,

  436. and I'm looking

  437. all the way through

  438. in the Bible

  439. for the things

  440. I need to have

  441. in my resume.

  442. Okay, I've got to be baptized.

  443. Okay, I haven't got

  444. that done yet.

  445. Okay, I'm going to have

  446. to speak to the pastor

  447. after church

  448. so we can get that

  449. crossed off the list,

  450. and I have to honor

  451. my parents.

  452. Gosh, that's going to be

  453. really hard for me.

  454. I'm going to really have

  455. to talk to the pastor

  456. about what I have to do

  457. about that so I can

  458. cross that off my list.

  459. So there's one way

  460. of reading the Bible

  461. which is all about

  462. resume writing,

  463. and he's saying

  464. that what he's going

  465. to do to manifest

  466. the rightness of God

  467. is going to be

  468. completely and utterly

  469. separate from the

  470. resume writing project.

  471. It's going to have

  472. nothing to do with it,

  473. but that if you read

  474. the Bible the way

  475. that God had always

  476. intended,

  477. you'd understand

  478. that what he's going

  479. to do to manifest

  480. that he's right

  481. is what he,

  482. that all the way

  483. along the Bible

  484. was being written

  485. in such a way

  486. for us to understand

  487. that there's something

  488. about us human beings,

  489. and God's going to

  490. try to make clear to us

  491. the mystery of what

  492. it means to be a human being,

  493. to put us on the path

  494. of understanding

  495. the mystery of what

  496. it means to be a human being,

  497. and that when we start

  498. to understand that,

  499. we'd realize that only God

  500. can make us right

  501. with himself.

  502. And that's why it says here,

  503. it goes on to say

  504. in verse 23,

  505. for all have sinned

  506. and fall short

  507. of the glory of God.

  508. Actually, at this point,

  509. Andrew, could you put

  510. the text up?

  511. Some of you are used

  512. to the fact that I do

  513. this sometimes.

  514. In some ways,

  515. I only have a one-point

  516. sermon today,

  517. and my one-point sermon

  518. is verses 23 to 25a,

  519. and all I'm going to do

  520. is try to really help you

  521. to understand

  522. verses 23 to 25a,

  523. and so I'm going to have

  524. a few other little things

  525. for you to remember,

  526. but could you say

  527. this text of Scripture

  528. with me right now?

  529. For all have sinned

  530. and lack the glory of God

  531. and are justified

  532. by his grace as a gift

  533. through the redemption

  534. that is in Christ Jesus,

  535. whom God put forward

  536. as a propitiation

  537. by his blood

  538. to be received by faith.

  539. That's my one point.

  540. I was trying,

  541. I spent a long time

  542. trying to write that

  543. in my own words,

  544. and I realized,

  545. you know what,

  546. I just want to try to,

  547. if all you get out

  548. of today's sermon

  549. is a bit of an understanding

  550. of that

  551. and a bit of a memory

  552. of that,

  553. then I have done

  554. what God requires of me,

  555. because it's always

  556. far better for you

  557. to remember what God says

  558. than what George says.

  559. In fact,

  560. the great danger

  561. always in preaching

  562. is that people

  563. leave churches

  564. wondering,

  565. spectacular preacher,

  566. they tell you all about

  567. the stories

  568. that the preacher said,

  569. and then if you ask them

  570. what was the Bible text on,

  571. they go,

  572. I don't know,

  573. that's a good question.

  574. I don't know,

  575. what was the Bible text?

  576. Was there a Bible text?

  577. And every time

  578. you come to a church

  579. and you go away

  580. remembering the stories

  581. but don't have any idea

  582. about the Bible text,

  583. I or any other minister

  584. have failed.

  585. So one of the things

  586. you can do

  587. is just pray for me

  588. that you'll remember

  589. the Bible

  590. after coming to church

  591. and you'll have met

  592. with Jesus

  593. and you won't

  594. remember George.

  595. Please pray for that

  596. for our church

  597. into the future.

  598. Please pray for me

  599. for that.

  600. So anyway,

  601. so here's this thing

  602. and it looks very odd.

  603. It has odd language.

  604. So here's the first way,

  605. first thing we're going to say

  606. to help you to understand

  607. what he says here

  608. when it says,

  609. for all have sinned

  610. and fall short

  611. of the glory of God.

  612. Andrew,

  613. if you could put up

  614. the first point,

  615. Paul begins

  616. with a very odd thing.

  617. He begins by saying

  618. in a sense,

  619. I am human

  620. and I lack

  621. the glory of God.

  622. In fact,

  623. he says,

  624. we're all human beings

  625. and we all lack

  626. the glory of God.

  627. Lacking the glory of God

  628. is a literal way

  629. of translating

  630. fall short

  631. of the glory of God.

  632. It's how you translate

  633. the Greek literally.

  634. And it's a very,

  635. very odd thing actually

  636. that Paul's going

  637. to get to the heart

  638. of the proper way

  639. to read the Bible

  640. and how the rightness

  641. of God is manifested

  642. that he begins

  643. by reminding us

  644. that we're human.

  645. and it's hidden

  646. in the imagery there

  647. which is not always

  648. easily achieved by us

  649. when we see it

  650. but that's exactly

  651. the very first step

  652. that he takes.

  653. I am human

  654. and I lack

  655. the glory of God.

  656. Imagine if every morning

  657. when we woke up

  658. we said that.

  659. Imagine that

  660. in every conflict

  661. we have

  662. with our spouse

  663. or our parent

  664. or our friends

  665. or our boss

  666. we were to pause

  667. and say

  668. I am human

  669. and I lack

  670. the glory of God.

  671. I am human

  672. and I lack

  673. the glory of God.

  674. You know

  675. if you ask

  676. most people in Canada

  677. what heaven is like

  678. or what happens

  679. after you die

  680. they will tell you

  681. we will maybe

  682. tell each other

  683. that we go

  684. to a better place.

  685. And if we don't say

  686. that we go

  687. to a better place

  688. we'll say

  689. that we will remember

  690. that person

  691. always in our hearts.

  692. And heaven

  693. is a mental place

  694. an emotional place

  695. a spiritual place

  696. but it has nothing

  697. to do with our bodies

  698. and it has nothing

  699. to do with

  700. how we live our lives

  701. because most Canadians

  702. would say

  703. that as long as

  704. there's one or two

  705. or three people

  706. who like you

  707. then you go

  708. to a better place

  709. and we remember you

  710. in our hearts.

  711. But Paul

  712. doesn't talk about us

  713. being just minds

  714. or just emotions

  715. or just spiritual.

  716. He goes

  717. and he reminds us

  718. that we are human

  719. and we lack

  720. the glory of God.

  721. He touches

  722. on the grand

  723. narrative of the Bible

  724. because ultimately

  725. the Bible

  726. has one ultimate author

  727. and because

  728. there is one

  729. ultimate author

  730. it tells a story

  731. and it's a story

  732. in six parts.

  733. It tells us

  734. the story

  735. in the words

  736. of Genesis 1

  737. in the beginning

  738. God created the heavens

  739. and the earth

  740. or in the words

  741. of John chapter 1

    John 1 chapter mention

  742. in the beginning

  743. was the word

  744. and the word

  745. was with God

  746. and the word

  747. was God.

  748. He was with God

  749. in the beginning.

  750. All things

  751. were made by him

  752. and without him

  753. nothing was made

  754. that was made.

  755. And the beginning

  756. of the story

  757. is that God

  758. makes all things

  759. and he makes

  760. all things good

  761. and the second act

  762. of the story

  763. is that human beings

  764. decided that they

  765. did not want

  766. to just be creatures

  767. living in God's

  768. created order

  769. but that our

  770. spiritual ancestors

  771. Adam and Eve

  772. representing us

  773. because we're entailed

  774. in them

  775. and every human being

  776. has replicated

  777. that decision

  778. that we decided

  779. that we would be

  780. as gods

  781. that we would not

  782. wake up and say

  783. I am human

  784. but we would wake up

  785. and say I am God

  786. I am like God

  787. and in fact

  788. that's still

  789. the human problem

  790. isn't it

  791. that most of us

  792. in our anger

  793. in our impatience

  794. in our irritation

  795. in our dreams

  796. in our boasting

  797. our boasting

  798. is that we are a god

  799. that it's hard

  800. for us to say

  801. to ourselves

  802. I am human

  803. and the bible

  804. in this overarching story

  805. describes that human beings

  806. are not only made good

  807. but that human beings

  808. are made

  809. in the image of God

  810. they bear the image

  811. of God

  812. and because they are made

  813. in the image of God

  814. who is right

  815. and who is glorious

  816. that every human being

  817. was made

  818. glorious

  819. and not only

  820. was there in a sense

  821. something glorious

  822. about every human being

  823. because they are made

  824. in the image of God

  825. ultimately the true glory

  826. of human beings

  827. came in that

  828. every human being

  829. was a reflection

  830. of the glory of God

  831. think more

  832. of a perfect mirror

  833. perfectly pointed

  834. to the light

  835. rather than being

  836. a flashlight

  837. and that when human beings

  838. turned

  839. so this is one of those moments

  840. where it's good

  841. to have spotlights

  842. and when every human being

  843. turned

  844. from the glory of God

  845. made in the image

  846. of God

  847. to reflect the glory

  848. of God

  849. and when human beings

  850. turned from that

  851. and decided

  852. that they would rather

  853. be like gods

  854. and therefore

  855. look down

  856. on the created order

  857. the mirror

  858. turned its back

  859. on the light

  860. and there is now darkness

  861. we lack

  862. the glory

  863. of God

  864. I am human

  865. lack the glory

  866. of God

  867. for all have sinned

  868. and fall short

  869. of the glory

  870. of God

  871. for all have sinned

  872. and lack

  873. the glory

  874. of God

  875. and this Bible text

  876. then

  877. this is

  878. I don't think

  879. that there is

  880. any sociology

  881. political ideology

  882. religion

  883. or spirituality

  884. which is as true

  885. to human experience

  886. as this

  887. even though we don't like it

  888. but I don't think

  889. there is anything

  890. as wise

  891. and insightful

  892. as this

  893. that explains

  894. on one hand

  895. why

  896. you see this text

  897. is not saying

  898. that we are as bad

  899. as we can possibly be

  900. but it is telling us

  901. that the damaged image

  902. within us

  903. touches everything

  904. that we are

  905. which is why

  906. on one hand

  907. we still do some good things

  908. but every good thing

  909. we do

  910. there is always this

  911. touch of sin

  912. in it

  913. and we human beings

  914. we know that

  915. we know that

  916. even when good times

  917. are going on

  918. in our life

  919. we know that

  920. there is a cloud

  921. that will come

  922. that they will come

  923. to an end

  924. that evil

  925. that having turned

  926. our back on God

  927. to be as gods

  928. ourselves

  929. that that touches

  930. everything

  931. in some small way

  932. or sometimes

  933. in a huge way

  934. Stalin

  935. and the killing

  936. of tens of millions

  937. of Ukrainians

  938. and China

  939. and Mao Zedong

  940. killing maybe up to

  941. 50 million Chinese

  942. and the Armenian genocide

  943. and the Rwandan genocide

  944. and Cambodia

  945. and one third

  946. of the population

  947. killed

  948. and sometimes

  949. the evil isn't

  950. just a tiny little bit

  951. but it's

  952. it's

  953. it's

  954. it's

  955. godlike

  956. with a small g

  957. demon like

  958. in its immensity

  959. but the Bible

  960. here isn't saying

  961. that human beings

  962. are as bad

  963. as they can

  964. possibly be

  965. but that

  966. it

  967. the lack

  968. of the glory

  969. of God

  970. touches

  971. everything

  972. that we are

  973. and on one hand

  974. it means that

  975. there is

  976. in every human

  977. breast

  978. some longing

  979. and yearning

  980. for heaven

  981. some longing

  982. or yearning

  983. for that time

  984. when we

  985. bore the image

  986. of God

  987. unbroken

  988. and were pointed

  989. towards the glory

  990. of God

  991. and therefore

  992. reflected the glory

  993. of God

  994. yet at the same time

  995. we lack

  996. the glory

  997. of God

  998. and here is

  999. the huge

  1000. problem

  1001. we cannot

  1002. leave ourselves

  1003. to fix

  1004. ourselves

1005. have an out of body

  1006. experience

  1007. it's still you

1008. and your out of body

  1009. experience

  1010. think that politics

  1011. can solve it

  1012. listen

  1013. I lack the glory

  1014. of God

  1015. it doesn't mean

  1016. we lack the glory

  1017. of God

  1018. any better

1019. if we have a million

  1020. people making

  1021. the decision

  1022. if a million

  1023. people lacking

  1024. the glory

  1025. of God

  1026. make the decision

  1027. it's still going

  1028. to be a decision

  1029. lacking the glory

  1030. of God

  1031. and we cannot

  1032. leave ourselves

  1033. to fix ourselves

  1034. and Paul is here

  1035. talking now

  1036. about human beings

  1037. embodied

  1038. and with minds

  1039. and hearts

  1040. and wills

  1041. and depths

  1042. and because human

  1043. beings aren't just

  1044. isolated

  1045. autonomous individuals

  1046. but we come in

  1047. families

  1048. and in societies

  1049. and cultures

  1050. it's talking about

  1051. us being social

  1052. and because we

  1053. human beings

  1054. don't just float

  1055. around in the clouds

  1056. with no environment

  1057. it means how we

  1058. relate to the environment

  1059. and how we relate

  1060. to the planet

1061. and it means how we

  1062. relate to those

  1063. who are before us

1064. and it means how we

  1065. relate to those

  1066. who are going to

  1067. come after us

  1068. and I am human

  1069. I lack the glory

  1070. of God

  1071. and so do you

  1072. and I think

  1073. there are a few

  1074. things more

  1075. empirically true

  1076. or more wise

  1077. than for all

  1078. have sinned

  1079. and fall short

  1080. of the glory

  1081. of God

  1082. no matter

  1083. how unpopular

  1084. it is

  1085. when you think

  1086. about it

  1087. and look at it

  1088. it is only

  1089. an entrance

  1090. into wisdom

  1091. could you

  1092. Andrew

  1093. put the scripture

  1094. text up again

  1095. want to say

  1096. this text

  1097. with me

  1098. again

  1099. my one point

  1100. for all

  1101. have sinned

  1102. and lack

  1103. the glory

  1104. of God

  1105. and are justified

  1106. by his grace

  1107. as a gift

  1108. through the

  1109. redemption

  1110. that is in

  1111. Christ Jesus

  1112. whom God

  1113. put forward

  1114. as a propitiation

  1115. by his blood

  1116. to be received

  1117. by faith

  1118. so

  1119. the proper way

  1120. of reading the Bible

  1121. that shows

  1122. the rightness

  1123. of God

  1124. first wants us

1125. to be able to say

  1126. I am human

  1127. and I lack

  1128. the glory of God

1129. and then it wants us

  1130. to say

  1131. Andrew if you could

  1132. put up

  1133. the second point

  1134. only God's

  1135. just grace

  1136. can save me

  1137. all of me

  1138. only God's

  1139. just grace

  1140. can save me

  1141. all of me

  1142. just for a moment

  1143. I you know

  1144. you don't

  1145. if those of you

  1146. have your Bibles

  1147. if just beyond

  1148. that quote

  1149. listen to how

  1150. it continues

  1151. this was to show

  1152. God's rightness

  1153. because in his

  1154. divine forbearance

  1155. he had passed

  1156. over former sins

  1157. it was to show

  1158. his rightness

  1159. at the present

  1160. time

  1161. so that he

  1162. might be

  1163. just

  1164. and the

  1165. justifier

  1166. of the one

  1167. who has faith

  1168. in Jesus

  1169. you see

  1170. we tend to

  1171. understand grace

  1172. as cutting

  1173. giving us slack

  1174. but giving

  1175. one person

  1176. slack

  1177. is unjust

  1178. to other people

  1179. you know

  1180. one moment

  1181. God

  1182. you're saying

  1183. that

  1184. George

  1185. could be the

  1186. rector of this

  1187. parish

  1188. even though

  1189. they reject

  1190. his resume

  1191. are you saying

  1192. God

  1193. that you're

  1194. just going

  1195. to reject

  1196. some people's

  1197. resumes

  1198. but not

  1199. everybody's

  1200. resume

  1201. like what

  1202. is it

  1203. are these

  1204. the people

  1205. who are

  1206. like the

  1207. teacher's

  1208. pet

  1209. and they've

  1210. sucked up

  1211. to you

  1212. somehow

  1213. like how

  1214. do we

  1215. react to

  1216. teacher's

  1217. pets

  1218. some of

  1219. us say

  1220. dang it

  1221. how come

  1222. they became

  1223. the teacher's

  1224. pet

  1225. and I

  1226. didn't

  1227. how come

  1228. they're

  1229. better at

  1230. you know

  1231. snuggling up

  1232. to the teacher

  1233. you know

  1234. in a metaphorical

  1235. way

  1236. than I am

  1237. and the rest

  1238. of us

  1239. loathe

  1240. teacher's

  1241. pets

  1242. and so

  1243. grace

  1244. can't just

  1245. be God

  1246. cutting some

  1247. people's

  1248. slack

  1249. because we

  1250. all know

  1251. that's not

  1252. fair

  1253. I remember

  1254. there's been

  1255. different times

  1256. I've asked

  1257. my kids

  1258. you know

  1259. after I

  1260. go to

  1261. these

  1262. I've gone

  1263. to lots

  1264. of graduation

  1265. ceremonies

  1266. and you

  1267. know

  1268. here's where

  1269. I get to

  1270. sound like

  1271. an old

  1272. man

  1273. when I

  1274. was in

  1275. school

  1276. I think

  1277. when you

  1278. graduated

  1279. you just

  1280. graduated

  1281. but now

  1282. the ceremony

  1283. there's a

  1284. they give

  1285. like they give

  1286. about 273

  1287. awards

  1288. and you

  1289. know

  1290. but anyway

  1291. when it comes

  1292. to the more

  1293. academic ones

  1294. I sense

  1295. sometimes my

  1296. kids

  1297. how come

  1298. they won

  1299. that award

  1300. and they'll

  1301. say teacher's

  1302. pet

  1303. teacher's pet

  1304. that's why

  1305. they got it

  1306. and it's

  1307. not fair

  1308. right

  1309. so

  1310. if

  1311. on one

  1312. hand

  1313. if it is

  1314. the fact

  1315. that I am

  1316. human

  1317. I lack

  1318. the glory

  1319. of God

  1320. and I

  1321. can never

  1322. leave

  1323. myself

  1324. to fix

  1325. myself

  1326. and I

  1327. come to

  1328. the point

  1329. that only

  1330. God

  1331. can do

  1332. it

  1333. but God

  1334. is not

  1335. worthy

  1336. of being

  1337. God

  1338. if he's

  1339. not

  1340. just

  1341. just

  1342. as

  1343. we don't

  1344. think

  1345. highly

  1346. of

  1347. teachers

  1348. who

  1349. show

  1350. favoritism

  1351. because

  1352. certain

  1353. kids

  1354. suck up

  1355. to them

  1356. and we

  1357. don't

  1358. think of

  1359. them as

  1360. exemplary

  1361. teachers

  1362. and in

  1363. fact if

  1364. we were

  1365. parents

  1366. and had

  1367. some

  1368. choice

  1369. we would

  1370. avoid

  1371. having

  1372. our

  1373. kids

  1374. have

  1375. that

  1376. teacher

  1377. as

  1378. their

  1379. teacher

  1380. or maybe

  1381. I'm

  1382. just

  1383. really

  1384. old

  1385. fashioned

  1386. and anal

  1387. but I

  1388. think it

  1389. would be

  1390. common

  1391. and so

  1392. how is it

  1393. that God

  1394. can

  1395. be just

  1396. and at

  1397. the same

  1398. time

  1399. save us

  1400. that's what

  1401. the rest

  1402. of the

  1403. verse is

  1404. going to

  1405. tell us

  1406. Andrew

  1407. if you

  1408. could put

  1409. up our

  1410. one

  1411. point

  1412. again

  1413. that would

  1414. be

  1415. very

  1416. helpful

  1417. and could

  1418. you all

  1419. say it

  1420. with me

  1421. again

  1422. for all

  1423. have

  1424. sinned

  1425. and lack

  1426. the glory

  1427. of God

  1428. and are

  1429. justified

  1430. by his

  1431. grace

  1432. as a

  1433. gift

  1434. through

  1435. the redemption

  1436. that is

  1437. in Christ

  1438. Jesus

  1439. whom God

  1440. put forward

  1441. as a

  1442. propitiation

  1443. by his

  1444. blood

  1445. to be

  1446. received

  1447. by faith

  1448. I just

  1449. came

  1450. Andrew if you

  1451. could put up

  1452. the next

  1453. point which

  1454. is justified

  1455. made right

  1456. with God

  1457. by Jesus

  1458. so in that

  1459. long sentence

  1460. and you want

  1461. to try to

  1462. figure out

  1463. what it

  1464. means

  1465. justified

  1466. means

  1467. made right

  1468. with God

  1469. by Jesus

  1470. and there's

  1471. sort of a

  1472. bit of a

  1473. declaration

  1474. I just

  1475. came from

  1476. my

  1477. synod

  1478. which is

  1479. Anglican

  1480. speak for

  1481. like my

  1482. denominational

  1483. meetings

  1484. and Dick

  1485. and Daniel

  1486. were there

  1487. representing

  1488. the lady

  1489. and I was

  1490. there as

  1491. the clergy

  1492. and it was

  1493. in Vancouver

  1494. and I remember

  1495. after I think

  1496. it was one of

  1497. the first

  1498. lunches

  1499. I heard

  1500. a couple

  1501. of people

  1502. talking about

  1503. how they

  1504. find it

  1505. really hard

  1506. when they

  1507. go to

  1508. things like

  1509. this

  1510. it was

  1511. put on

  1512. by a

  1513. Chinese

  1514. parish

  1515. the food

  1516. was

  1517. wonderful

  1518. like the

  1519. first day

  1520. of synod

  1521. we had

  1522. this really

  1523. good

  1524. Chinese

  1525. food

  1526. the second

  1527. day

  1528. I like

  1529. sushi

  1530. just

  1531. we

  1532. sushi

  1533. for lunch

  1534. like it

  1535. was

  1536. spectacular

  1537. yeah

  1538. some of you

  1539. are saying

  1540. yes

  1541. next time

  1542. synods

  1543. in Vancouver

  1544. we might

  1545. get a lot

  1546. of volunteers

  1547. to go

  1548. there

  1549. hoping to

  1550. get

  1551. basically

  1552. as much

  1553. sushi

  1554. as you

  1555. could

  1556. eat

  1557. and so

  1558. one of

  1559. the people

  1560. said

  1561. there's

  1562. all sort

  1563. of fruit

  1564. and desserts

  1565. and all

  1566. that stuff

  1567. you know

  1568. that

  1569. it was a

  1570. Chinese

  1571. congregation

  1572. Chinese

  1573. people

  1574. were very

  1575. very

  1576. very

  1577. very

  1578. servant

  1579. hearted

  1580. and hospitable

  1581. and anyway

  1582. so I heard

  1583. at the end

  1584. of the lunch

  1585. I heard

  1586. a couple

  1587. of clergy

  1588. I think

  1589. talking about

  1590. how they

  1591. were going

  1592. like this

  1593. it's so hard

  1594. coming to

  1595. these times

  1596. when there's

  1597. as much

  1598. free food

  1599. as you can

  1600. possibly eat

  1601. like this

  1602. it's a hard

  1603. thing to come

  1604. to

  1605. and instantly

  1606. it flashed

  1607. through my

  1608. mind

  1609. I used to

  1610. have a

  1611. multi

  1612. million

  1613. we used to

  1614. have a

  1615. multi

  1616. millionaire

  1617. who come

  1618. to this

  1619. church

  1620. and I

  1621. mentioned

  1622. his name

  1623. it's nothing

  1624. embarrassing

  1625. about

  1626. his name

  1627. was Tom

  1628. and he

  1629. would

  1630. occasionally

  1631. treat me

  1632. by taking

  1633. me out

  1634. to eat

  1635. and we

  1636. would go

  1637. to this

  1638. like at the

  1639. time the

  1640. most expensive

  1641. restaurant in

  1642. Ottawa

  1643. and he was

  1644. well known

  1645. there

  1646. and the

  1647. first time

  1648. I went

  1649. I didn't

  1650. want to

  1651. choose the

  1652. cheapest

  1653. thing on

  1654. the menu

  1655. but I

  1656. chose the

  1657. second

  1658. cheapest

  1659. thing in

  1660. the menu

  1661. he asked

  1662. me beforehand

  1663. what I was

  1664. going to order

  1665. and he said

  1666. George you're not

  1667. allowed to order

  1668. that

  1669. you're not

  1670. allowed to

  1671. order that

  1672. I want you to

  1673. order the

  1674. most expensive

  1675. thing on

  1676. the menu

  1677. trust me

  1678. I can

  1679. cover this

  1680. okay

  1681. just order

  1682. whatever you

  1683. want

  1684. he was the

  1685. same guy

  1686. I've never

  1687. seen anybody

  1688. else like it

  1689. he was well

  1690. known

  1691. he has the

  1692. menu

  1693. and the

  1694. waitress

  1695. comes and

  1696. she says

  1697. hi Tom

  1698. he says

  1699. hi

  1700. he said

  1701. you know

  1702. I don't

  1703. like anything

  1704. on this

  1705. menu

  1706. here's what

  1707. I'd like

  1708. the cook

  1709. to make

  1710. me

  1711. here's what

  1712. I'd like

  1713. the cook

  1714. to make

  1715. me

  1716. and she

  1717. wrote it

  1718. down

  1719. and they

  1720. brought it

  1721. to him

  1722. okay

  1723. now here's

  1724. the thing

  1725. if I came

  1726. home and

  1727. told my wife

  1728. and you

  1729. that I had a

  1730. free lunch

  1731. I did not

  1732. have a

  1733. free lunch

  1734. somebody

  1735. has to

  1736. pay

  1737. there's

  1738. no free

  1739. lunch

  1740. ever

  1741. somebody

  1742. has to

  1743. pay

  1744. a few

  1745. years ago

  1746. in the

  1747. congregation

  1748. we had

  1749. a fellow

  1750. a priest

  1751. who'd come

  1752. here from

  1753. Africa

  1754. to do a

  1755. master's

  1756. degree

  1757. at St.

  1758. Paul

  1759. University

  1760. and through

  1761. no fault

  1762. of his

  1763. own

  1764. all of

  1765. his funding

  1766. fell out

  1767. from underneath

  1768. his feet

  1769. and so

  1770. the university

  1771. they were

  1772. on one hand

  1773. very gracious

  1774. to him

  1775. they allowed

  1776. him

  1777. like at

  1778. most places

  1779. if you

  1780. don't pay

  1781. up your

  1782. bills at

  1783. the end

  1784. of one

  1785. term

  1786. you can't

  1787. take other

  1788. courses

  1789. but they

  1790. allowed him

  1791. to keep

  1792. taking courses

  1793. but he

  1794. couldn't get

  1795. any credit

  1796. for them

  1797. until he

  1798. until it

  1799. was made

  1800. right

  1801. it had to

  1802. be made

  1803. right

  1804. and in

  1805. that particular

  1806. case

  1807. it had to

  1808. it means

  1809. the money

  1810. had to be

  1811. paid

  1812. and penalties

  1813. had to be

  1814. paid

  1815. and until

  1816. it was

  1817. made right

  1818. he wouldn't

  1819. get the

  1820. master's

  1821. degree

  1822. and until

  1823. it was

  1824. made right

  1825. his bishop

  1826. back home

  1827. wouldn't be

  1828. happy

  1829. it had to

  1830. be made

  1831. right

  1832. and this

  1833. African

  1834. fellow

  1835. he just

  1836. through no

  1837. fault of his

  1838. own

  1839. he couldn't

  1840. make it

  1841. right

  1842. and so

  1843. we as a

  1844. congregation

  1845. not patting

  1846. ourselves on

  1847. the back

  1848. we talked

  1849. and it

  1850. was like

  1851. fifteen thousand

  1852. dollars or

  1853. something

  1854. it was like

  1855. more than that

  1856. it was a lot

  1857. of money

  1858. and we

  1859. made it

  1860. right

  1861. we collected

  1862. the money

  1863. no income

  1864. tax receipts

  1865. and we

  1866. made it

  1867. right

  1868. so that he

  1869. could be

  1870. declared

  1871. to be

  1872. having it

  1873. made right

  1874. that all

  1875. of the bills

  1876. were paid

  1877. all of the

  1878. credits were

  1879. properly

  1880. accounted

  1881. and he

  1882. could graduate

  1883. and it

  1884. made it

  1885. right with

  1886. the bishop

  1887. with the

  1888. university

  1889. we made

  1890. it right

  1891. and that's

  1892. what justified

  1893. means

  1894. it's telling

  1895. us that

  1896. when we look

  1897. at Jesus'

  1898. death upon

  1899. the cross

  1900. that what

  1901. we see

  1902. God doing

  1903. the God

  1904. who is

  1905. right

  1906. that on

  1907. the cross

  1908. God is

  1909. providing a

  1910. way to

  1911. make it

  1912. right

  1913. for us

  1914. human beings

  1915. to be

  1916. right with

  1917. himself

  1918. and he

  1919. is making

  1920. it right

  1921. he's

  1922. paying

  1923. the penalties

  1924. and all

  1925. of the

  1926. other things

  1927. that have

  1928. to go

  1929. on

  1930. and it's

  1931. a mystery

  1932. but that's

  1933. how we're

  1934. to understand

  1935. the cross

  1936. that we

  1937. can't make

  1938. it right

  1939. ourselves

  1940. but God

  1941. makes it

  1942. right

  1943. and he

  1944. declares

  1945. that it's

  1946. made right

  1947. just as

  1948. the fellow

  1949. from Africa

  1950. he needed

  1951. the university

  1952. to declare

  1953. that it

  1954. was made

  1955. right

  1956. so that

  1957. whoever it

  1958. was the

  1959. other part

  1960. of the

  1961. university

  1962. could grant

  1963. him the

  1964. degree

  1965. he needed

  1966. that to be

  1967. made right

  1968. with a

  1969. declaration

  1970. and that's

  1971. what the

  1972. Bible is

  1973. saying here

  1974. is that

  1975. when you

  1976. see the

  1977. word

  1978. justified

  1979. here

  1980. is that

  1981. it's

  1982. Jesus

  1983. making it

  1984. right

  1985. not for

  1986. himself

  1987. but for

  1988. us

  1989. on our

  1990. behalf

  1991. as a bit

  1992. of a

  1993. declaration

  1994. Andrew

  1995. could you

  1996. could you

  1997. put that

  1998. text up

  1999. again

  2000. for us

  2001. please

  2002. could you

  2003. all say

  2004. it with

  2005. me

  2006. again

  2007. for all

  2008. have

  2009. sinned

  2010. and lack

  2011. the glory

  2012. of God

  2013. and are

  2014. justified

  2015. by his

  2016. grace

  2017. as a

  2018. gift

  2019. through the

  2020. redemption

  2021. that is

  2022. in Christ

  2023. Jesus

  2024. whom God

  2025. put forward

  2026. as a

  2027. propitiation

  2028. by his

  2029. blood

  2030. to be

  2031. received

  2032. by faith

  2033. justified

  2034. justified

  2035. made right

  2036. with God

  2037. by Christ

  2038. as a

  2039. result of

  2040. God's

  2041. grace

  2042. as a

  2043. gift

  2044. and then

  2045. it goes

  2046. on and

  2047. talks about

  2048. redemption

  2049. which is a

  2050. very very

  2051. funny type

  2052. of an

  2053. image

  2054. one of

  2055. the things

  2056. about

  2057. resume

  2058. writing

  2059. is that

  2060. resume

  2061. writing

  2062. is really

  2063. boasting

  2064. isn't it

  2065. in fact

  2066. if you

  2067. go to

  2068. a

  2069. resume

  2070. writing

  2071. helper

  2072. and they

  2073. look at

  2074. your

  2075. resume

  2076. they

  2077. would

  2078. actually

  2079. I mean

  2080. they don't

  2081. use this

  2082. language

  2083. right

  2084. especially

  2085. here in

  2086. Canada

  2087. because we

  2088. have our

  2089. own

  2090. peculiar

  2091. Canadian

  2092. way of

  2093. boasting

  2094. but they

  2095. say there

  2096. must be

  2097. other

  2098. things you

  2099. can boast

  2100. about

  2101. that you

  2102. haven't

  2103. included

  2104. in here

  2105. I mean

  2106. they don't

  2107. use the

  2108. word boast

  2109. but isn't

  2110. that what

  2111. it is

  2112. there must

  2113. be other

  2114. things you

  2115. can boast

  2116. about

  2117. and

  2118. you know

  2119. so you

  2120. can boast

  2121. in the

  2122. fact that

  2123. you have

  2124. a degree

  2125. or multiple

  2126. degrees

  2127. and you can

  2128. boast about

  2129. this experience

  2130. and this

  2131. connection

  2132. and in

  2133. some ways

  2134. even your

  2135. aspirations

  2136. are a

  2137. type of

  2138. boasting

  2139. and

  2140. actually

  2141. one of the

  2142. things

  2143. if you

  2144. just read

  2145. down

  2146. a little

  2147. bit

  2148. further

  2149. in

  2150. verse

  2151. 27

  2152. after

  2153. this

  2154. section

  2155. that

  2156. we

  2157. just

  2158. kept

  2159. quoting

  2160. the

  2161. Bible

  2162. is

  2163. going

  2164. to

  2165. say

  2166. that

  2167. remember

  2168. I

  2169. said

  2170. that

  2171. the

  2172. gospel

  2173. is

  2174. a

  2175. complete

  2176. and

  2177. utter

  2178. rejection

  2179. of

  2180. the

  2181. resume

  2182. writing

  2183. approach

  2184. to

  2185. understanding

  2186. the

  2187. religious

  2188. life

  2189. or

  2190. the

  2191. spiritual

  2192. life

  2193. and

  2194. in

  2195. fact

  2196. it

  2197. makes

  2198. it

  2199. very

  2200. clear

  2201. verse

  2202. 27

  2203. then

  2204. what

  2205. becomes

  2206. of our

  2207. boasting

  2208. it

  2209. is

  2210. excluded

  2211. that

  2212. whatever

  2213. it is

  2214. that

  2215. God

  2216. is

  2217. doing

  2218. to

  2219. make

  2220. us

  2221. right

  2222. has

  2223. nothing

  2224. to

  2225. do

  2226. with

  2227. boasting

  2228. but

  2229. here's

  2230. the

  2231. problem

  2232. with

  2233. boasting

  2234. when

  2235. we

  2236. boast

  2237. about

  2238. things

  2239. it

  2240. shows

  2241. what

  2242. we

  2243. put

  2244. our

  2245. hope

  2246. and

  2247. our

  2248. trust

  2249. and

  2250. our

  2251. confidence

  2252. in

  2253. I

  2254. can

  2255. handle

  2256. this

  2257. you know

  2258. we say

  2259. we're

  2260. going

  2261. into

  2262. a

  2263. hard

  2264. situation

  2265. I

  2266. can

  2267. handle

  2268. this

  2269. because

  2270. I'm

  2271. strong

  2272. that's

  2273. what

  2274. I

  2275. say

  2276. to

  2277. myself

  2278. maybe

  2279. right

  2280. we

  2281. I

  2282. can

  2283. handle

  2284. this

  2285. it

  2286. doesn't

  2287. matter

  2288. if

  2289. I

  2290. forget

  2291. certain

  2292. things

  2293. I

  2294. can

  2295. handle

  2296. this

  2297. because

  2298. I

  2299. have

  2300. a

  2301. credit

  2302. card

  2303. and

  2304. I

  2305. have

  2306. a

  2307. credit

  2308. limit

  2309. I

  2310. can

  2311. handle

  2312. this

  2313. job

  2314. because

  2315. I

  2316. got

  2317. the

  2318. education

  2319. it

  2320. shows

  2321. what

  2322. we

  2323. put

  2324. our

  2325. trust

  2326. and

  2327. our

  2328. faith

  2329. in

  2330. but

  2331. the

  2332. problem

  2333. is

  2334. that

  2335. the

  2336. very

  2337. same

  2338. things

  2339. that

  2340. we

  2341. put

  2342. our

  2343. trust

  2344. and

  2345. our

  2346. faith

  2347. in

  2348. often

  2349. let

  2350. us

  2351. down

  2352. my

  2353. resume

  2354. they

  2355. didn't

  2356. get

  2357. me

  2358. hired

  2359. here

  2360. and

  2361. so

  2362. the

  2363. very

  2364. same

  2365. things

  2366. that

  2367. we

  2368. boast

  2369. in

  2370. are

  2371. often

  2372. the

  2373. exact

  2374. same

  2375. things

  2376. that

  2377. cause

  2378. us

  2379. anxiety

  2380. in

  2381. our

  2382. lives

  2383. is

  2384. it

  2385. enough

  2386. is

  2387. it

  2388. enough

  2389. and

  2390. so

  2391. many

  2392. of us

  2393. especially

  2394. in a

  2395. culture

  2396. like

  2397. ours

  2398. which

  2399. is

  2400. so

  2401. geared

  2402. towards

  2403. boasting

  2404. in a

  2405. properly

  2406. humble

  2407. low-key

  2408. Canadian

  2409. way

  2410. that's

  2411. so

  2412. organized

  2413. around

  2414. resume

  2415. writing

  2416. and

  2417. qualifications

  2418. and

  2419. ultimately

  2420. boasting

  2421. it's

  2422. also

  2423. we are

  2424. in a

  2425. culture

  2426. which

  2427. is

  2428. profoundly

  2429. anxious

  2430. and

  2431. the

  2432. other

  2433. thing

  2434. that

  2435. makes

  2436. us

  2437. profoundly

  2438. anxious

  2439. is

  2440. that

  2441. most

  2442. of

  2443. us

  2444. when

  2445. we

  2446. wake

  2447. up

  2448. in

  2449. the

  2450. morning

  2451. do

  2452. not

  2453. say

  2454. I

  2455. am

  2456. human

  2457. and

  2458. I

  2459. lack

  2460. the

  2461. glory

  2462. of

  2463. God

  2464. we

  2465. go

  2466. through

  2467. our

  2468. day

  2469. thinking

  2470. that

  2471. we

  2472. are

  2473. like

  2474. God

  2475. a

  2476. couple

  2477. of

  2478. weeks

  2479. ago

  2480. I

  2481. shared

  2482. with

  2483. you

  2484. that

  2485. I

  2486. was

  2487. behind

  2488. a

  2489. car

  2490. that

  2491. said

  2492. why

  2493. it

  2494. had

  2495. a

  2496. bumper

  2497. sticker

  2498. on

  2499. it

  2500. that

  2501. said

  2502. why

  2503. am

  2504. I

  2505. the

  2506. only

  2507. good

  2508. driver

  2509. on

  2510. the

  2511. planet

  2512. or

  2513. no

  2514. why

  2515. am

  2516. I

  2517. the

  2518. only

  2519. one

  2520. on

  2521. the

  2522. planet

  2523. who

  2524. knows

  2525. how

  2526. to

  2527. drive

  2528. that's

  2529. what

  2530. it

  2531. said

  2532. why

  2533. am

  2534. I

  2535. the

  2536. only

  2537. one

  2538. on

  2539. the

  2540. planet

  2541. who

  2542. knows

  2543. how

  2544. to

  2545. drive

  2546. and

  2547. probably

  2548. 80%

  2549. of the

  2550. men

  2551. here

  2552. in

  2553. the

  2554. room

  2555. are

  2556. thinking

  2557. one

  2558. moment

  2559. I

  2560. can't

  2561. speak

  2562. for

  2563. the

  2564. women

  2565. you

  2566. can

  2567. talk

  2568. about

  2569. that

  2570. at

  2571. coffee

  2572. hour

  2573. so

  2574. I

  2575. don't

  2576. know

  2577. if

  2578. women

  2579. laugh

  2580. at

  2581. it

  2582. because

  2583. they

  2584. realize

  2585. that's

  2586. how

  2587. their

  2588. husbands

  2589. or

  2590. their

  2591. fathers

  2592. would

  2593. act

  2594. or

  2595. if

  2596. that's

  2597. something

  2598. they

  2599. think

  2600. but

  2601. it

  2602. could

  2603. be

  2604. whether

  2605. it's

  2606. driving

  2607. or

  2608. something

  2609. else

  2610. when we

  2611. used

  2612. to have

  2613. a

  2614. building

  2615. about

  2616. every

  2617. three

  2618. or

  2619. four

  2620. years

  2621. there'd

  2622. be

  2623. a

  2624. fight

  2625. usually

  2626. amongst

  2627. the

  2628. women

  2629. about

  2630. how

  2631. to

  2632. organize

  2633. the

  2634. kitchen

  2635. some

  2636. new

  2637. whippersnapper

  2638. and whether

  2639. that

  2640. whippersnapper

  2641. was

  2642. 22

  2643. or

  2644. 62

  2645. some

  2646. new

  2647. whippersnapper

  2648. would

  2649. come in

  2650. and say

  2651. this

  2652. isn't

  2653. the

  2654. right

  2655. way

  2656. to

  2657. organize

  2658. a

  2659. kitchen

  2660. the

  2661. pot

  2662. shouldn't

  2663. be

  2664. here

  2665. and

  2666. the

  2667. cup

  2668. shouldn't

  2669. be

  2670. there

  2671. and

  2672. this

  2673. shouldn't

  2674. be

  2675. there

  2676. and

  2677. the

  2678. food

  2679. shouldn't

  2680. be

  2681. there

  2682. and

  2683. this

  2684. fridge

  2685. is

  2686. filthy

  2687. and

  2688. the

  2689. how

  2690. dare

  2691. you

  2692. say

  2693. that

  2694. this

  2695. fridge

  2696. is

  2697. filthy

  2698. I

  2699. think

  2700. if you

  2701. had a

  2702. bumper

  2703. sticker

  2704. why

  2705. I'm

  2706. the

  2707. only

  2708. one

  2709. on

  2710. the

  2711. planet

  2712. who

  2713. can

  2714. keep

  2715. an

  2716. order

  2717. well

  2718. keeping

  2719. house

  2720. the

  2721. guys

  2722. would

  2723. say

  2724. yeah

  2725. I

  2726. don't

  2727. know

  2728. maybe

  2729. that

  2730. person

  2731. is

  2732. but

  2733. you

  2734. know

  2735. it's

  2736. whatever

  2737. the

  2738. thing

  2739. is

  2740. okay

  2741. I've

  2742. probably

  2743. gotten

  2744. some

  2745. people

  2746. mad

  2747. at

  2748. me

  2749. with

  2750. my

  2751. analogies

  2752. but

  2753. the

  2754. fact

  2755. of

  2756. the

  2757. matter

  2758. is

  2759. is

  2760. that

  2761. we

  2762. are

  2763. deeply

  2764. seated

  2765. this

  2766. idea

  2767. that

  2768. we

  2769. are

  2770. God

  2771. and

  2772. not

  2773. only

  2774. then

  2775. is

  2776. this

  2777. idea

  2778. of

  2779. resume

  2780. writing

  2781. the

  2782. things

  2783. we

  2784. put

  2785. our

  2786. confidence

  2787. is

  2788. that

  2789. causes

  2790. anxiety

  2791. but

  2792. at

  2793. the

  2794. same

  2795. time

  2796. our

  2797. basic

  2798. desire

  2799. to

  2800. be

  2801. God

  2802. causes

  2803. us

  2804. a

  2805. type

  2806. of

  2807. fundamental

  2808. anxiety

  2809. and

  2810. so

  2811. one

  2812. of

  2813. the

  2814. things

  2815. about

  2816. this

  2817. text

  2818. Andrew

  2819. if

  2820. you

  2821. could

  2822. put

  2823. up

  2824. the

  2825. point

  2826. redemption

  2827. means

  2828. made

  2829. free

  2830. in

  2831. God

  2832. by

  2833. Jesus

  2834. God

  2835. by

  2836. Jesus

  2837. that

  2838. what

  2839. we

  2840. see

  2841. when

  2842. we

  2843. see

  2844. Jesus

  2845. dying

  2846. upon

  2847. the

  2848. cross

  2849. God

  2850. manifesting

  2851. his

  2852. rightness

  2853. and

  2854. that

  2855. he's

  2856. going

  2857. to

  2858. act

  2859. to

  2860. make

  2861. us

  2862. right

  2863. with

  2864. himself

  2865. that

  2866. one

  2867. of

  2868. the

  2869. things

  2870. he

  2871. makes

  2872. right

  2873. for

  2874. ourselves

  2875. is

  2876. that

  2877. as

  2878. the

  2879. gospel

  2880. grips

  2881. us

  2882. we

  2883. are

  2884. made

  2885. free

  2886. made

  2887. free

  2888. from

  2889. idols

  2890. made

  3098. can

  3100. if

  3101. you

  3102. might

  3103. wonder

  3104. how

  3105. do

  3106. these

  3107. things

  3108. fit

  3109. together

  3110. how

  3111. does

  3112. justified

  3113. fit

  3114. with

  3115. redeemed

  3116. and

  3117. propitiation

  3118. and

  3119. forgiveness

  3120. which

  3121. we're

  3122. going

  3123. to

  3124. talk

  3125. about

  3126. in

  3127. a

  3128. moment

3129. And sometimes, I know for many years I had a problem with this,

3130. because I was trying to think, okay, so I'm made right with God because he pays the penalty,

3131. and that sort of makes me free, and then it sort of deals with propitiation,

3132. which then sort of deals, and I try to, here's the thing,

3133. if you just remember this, is that the Bible uses a variety of images

3134. to try to let us know what it is that Jesus accomplishes on the cross for us.

3135. And so, we don't have to go, how does redeemed connect to justified,

3136. or justified connect to propitiation, or forgiveness connect to being redeemed.

3137. Every one of them are different images to help us understand what Jesus does on the cross.

3138. Don't try to link them apart from the cross.

3139. And as you go on, you see images of adoption, and images of Jesus being the victor,

3140. and images of Jesus as the mighty warrior.

3141. All of these things, we only understand them as that the mystery of the cross,

3142. and what Jesus accomplishes for us, it's so deep,

3143. that many images are needed to bring it home to us.

3144. And some of the images make a difference to us at different times in our lives.

3145. For those of us who struggle with addictions,

3146. the idea that in Jesus, I can be free might be very, very powerful.

3147. For those of us who struggle with failure,

3148. and how we're going to deal with the creditor,

3149. and how we're going to deal with this, and all the demands upon us,

3150. the idea that we are justified might be very, very powerful.

3151. And the very, very next image,

3152. for those of us who've maybe grown up with a very, very angry father,

3153. or a very, very angry child, or angry co-worker, angry neighbor,

3154. this whole idea that somehow or another Jesus deals with anger,

3155. that as that grips us, it helps us to understand God's love for us.

3156. And so these different words aren't to be understood as separate from the cross of Jesus.

3157. They're all understood as words to help us enter into the mystery of the cross,

3158. and the mystery of the cross helps us to understand each word.

3159. Andrew, could you put up our one point today, this scripture text?

3160. Could you say this with me, please?

3161. For all have sinned and lack the glory of God,

3162. and are justified by his grace as a gift,

3163. through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,

3164. whom God has put forward as a propitiation by his blood,

3165. to be received by faith.

3166. Could you put up the point about propitiation, please?

3167. Propitiation means the penalty paid and forgiven in Jesus.

3168. I just finished reading a novel about a group of a war

3169. between two different biker gangs,

3170. and one biker gang kills the delivery guy bringing in,

3171. you know, seven or eight million dollars of meth and a whole pile of cash.

3172. But in the way that he dies, the drugs get lost,

3173. it gets discovered by a 12-year-old boy,

3174. and I won't say anything more in case you end up reading the book.

3175. But at the heart of it,

3176. at the heart of it is that there starts to be lots of death,

3177. because the drug, the outlaw, the biker gang,

  3178. they want satisfaction.

  3179. They're angry.

  3180. They want satisfaction.

3181. They want the people who've stolen,

3182. that killed their drug runner,

  3183. they want him dead.

3184. And the people who stole their drugs and have their drugs,

  3185. even though it's just a 12,

  3186. they don't know that it's a 12-year-old boy,

3187. that's part of what drives the whole story.

  3188. But whoever it is,

3189. they want him to pay for what he's done.

  3190. And they want it,

  3191. they're angry,

3192. and their anger won't be stopped

3193. until things have been made right,

3194. and that the kid has,

  3195. whoever it is,

3196. has paid for what they've done,

  3197. and something else,

3198. and they get things back,

3199. and things are restored to the way that it properly should be.

3200. And so some of you know that the word propitiation

3201. talks about God's anger and his need for satisfaction,

3202. and it's very hard in our culture

3203. because when we hear this,

3204. we're very worried in the back of our mind

  3205. about anger-driven individuals,

3206. and even this cultural narrative,

3207. where often it's the drug lords or the mafia

  3208. that want satisfaction.

3209. But we have to understand this image in a different way.

3210. Quite a few years ago,

  3211. so in elementary school,

3212. for one of our kids,

  3213. we had to go,

  3214. you know,

3215. you go to meet the teachers,

3216. and you see the report cards,

3217. and my wife and I were curious

3218. about why there was this thing

3219. said about one of our kids,

3220. and it was when they were,

  3221. I think,

3222. in grade one or something like that,

3223. and it talked about them,

3224. sort of a little bit about their social,

  3225. not being socially adapted,

3226. and a few other things,

3227. and Louise and I were really puzzled about it.

3228. We don't think our kids are perfect,

3229. but we were just really puzzled about this comment

3230. because it sounded really out of character

  3231. about our child,

3232. and if it was true,

3233. we'd like to know about it,

  3234. but we were curious,

3235. and so the teacher said,

  3236. oh,

3237. that's because there was an older kid

  3238. bullying another kid,

3239. and your child told the teacher about it,

  3240. and I'm getting angry,

  3241. and I said,

3242. and that's why he got a bad report?

3243. This is before bullying was a big thing.

  3244. Hard to believe now,

  3245. right?

  3246. Yes,

3247. he didn't handle it right.

3248. It sows his lack of social adaption

  3249. and people skills

3250. that he told the teacher.

  3251. I'm getting mad.

3252. I try to control my anger.

3253. We have a frank conversation.

  3254. Now,

3255. I never actually got satisfaction about that,

  3256. but, you know,

3257. what did I want there?

  3258. I mean,

3259. it's actually now in this,

3260. with all the thing about bullying,

3261. and it's actually hard to believe

3262. that a teacher would say that,

3263. would actually give a child a lower mark

3264. because he told the teacher

  3265. that an older child

3266. was bullying a younger child,

3267. but that's actually what happened.

  3268. What did I want?

  3269. I was angry,

3270. and what did I want?

  3271. I wanted satisfaction.

  3272. Like,

  3273. really,

3274. if I could have managed it,

  3275. I wanted that,

  3276. I wanted the thing,

  3277. that the mark changed,

3278. and I would have liked

  3279. the teacher disciplined,

3280. and I probably would have liked

  3281. the teacher to have

  3282. some type of counseling

  3283. or retraining,

  3284. and I probably,

3285. and I would have wanted

  3286. the bully dealt with.

  3287. Now,

3288. none of those things happened.

3289. None of those things happened.

  3290. And so,

3291. that's just one of those things

  3292. in life

3293. where you have to forgive,

  3294. right?

  3295. You have to forgive.

  3296. You tell your child

3297. that they did the right thing.

3298. They're never going to get in trouble

  3299. with you

  3300. for telling a teacher

  3301. that an older child

3302. is bullying a younger child.

3303. They did the right thing,

3304. and you just have to swallow,

  3305. in a sense,

  3306. the anger.

  3307. You have to,

  3308. in a sense,

3309. just absorb it into yourself.

  3310. So,

3311. that's what propitiation here means.

3312. God is not like a crime lord,

3313. and he just wants to inflict

3314. terrible carnage on the world

3315. until he gets his toys back,

3316. and he can be the Lord.

3317. But he sees real evil,

  3318. and rather than having

  3319. the real evil

  3320. be carnage

  3321. on the human race,

  3322. he forgives.

3323. He takes that on himself.

3324. And then what we see

3325. when Jesus dies upon the cross

  3326. is God,

  3327. God making the penalty

  3328. being paid,

  3329. the order restored,

  3330. forgiveness happening,

  3331. and it all happens

3332. in Jesus taking our place.

3333. Because if God tried to,

  3334. if the anger,

3335. if the just punishment of God

  3336. fell on me,

  3337. it would unmake me.

  3338. And God,

3339. in his grace and mercy

  3340. and love,

  3341. sees that,

3342. and so he sends his son

  3343. to take my place.

  3344. Andrew,

3345. could you put the scripture text

  3346. up again,

  3347. the Romans 3,

  3348. I mean,

  3349. the 23 to 25?

3350. Could you say this with me?

  3351. For all have sinned

3352. and lack the glory of God

  3353. and are justified

  3354. by his grace

  3355. as a gift

  3356. through the redemption

3357. that is in Christ Jesus,

  3358. whom God put forward

  3359. as a propitiation

  3360. by his blood

  3361. to be received

  3362. by faith.

  3363. Here's the thing.

  3364. It's actually far harder

  3365. for those of us

3366. who are pretty good people

  3367. to understand this text

  3368. than those of us

  3369. who've had very,

  3370. very messed up lives.

  3371. When it says

3372. that we are to receive,

  3373. that on the cross

  3374. we are justified,

  3375. that on the cross

  3376. we are redeemed,

  3377. that on the cross

  3378. God's,

  3379. that we,

  3380. that Jesus becomes

  3381. our propitiation for us,

  3382. there is something

  3383. deep within us

3384. that wants to say to God

  3385. that you've got to

  3386. look at my resume.

  3387. God,

  3388. I have a pretty neat resume

  3389. and surely my resume

3390. must matter in some way.

  3391. But the word faith

  3392. and grace

  3393. means that

3394. we have to be able

  3395. to in a sense,

  3396. I shouldn't be holding

  3397. the Bible,

3398. I should hold my book,

  3399. that I can't be going

  3400. to God and saying,

  3401. God,

  3402. look at this.

  3403. Like surely this must

3404. add up to a little bit,

  3405. be worth something.

  3406. But if I understand

  3407. that I am human

3408. and lack the glory of God,

  3409. I depend upon God

3410. to act in a just

  3411. and fair way

3412. to do what I cannot do,

3413. that faith at the end

  3414. of the day means

  3415. putting this all aside

  3416. and realizing I have

  3417. to stand naked

  3418. before God

3419. and say that I have

  3420. nothing to add

3421. and I can do nothing

  3422. myself,

3423. that I have to depend

  3424. completely and utterly

3425. for what you will provide

3426. for me in the person

3427. of Jesus on the cross.

  3428. And fortunately,

3429. this is not just some,

3430. we don't have to get it

  3431. perfect for God

  3432. to accept us,

3433. but the tiniest little bit

  3434. of a sliver

  3435. of us recognizing

  3436. that only God

  3437. can do this,

  3438. God takes it.

  3439. And the Christian life

  3440. begins when we have

  3441. the tiniest sliver

  3442. of an acknowledgement

3443. that God has to do this

3444. so we can't do it ourselves.

  3445. And our growth

  3446. in our Christian life,

  3447. partly our growth

  3448. in being redeemed

  3449. and free in Jesus

  3450. is to realize

3451. that we can do nothing

  3452. on our own

  3453. to make us right

  3454. with God,

3455. that we have to completely

  3456. and utterly depend

  3457. upon what God does

3458. for us in the person

  3459. of his son

  3460. to make us right

  3461. with himself.

  3462. There's nothing else

  3463. that we can do.

  3464. That in fact,

  3465. there's just nothing else

  3466. that we can do.

3467. And one of the things

  3468. about this text

  3469. of scripture

  3470. that's so powerful

  3471. is that the word

  3472. justified

  3473. is in the future

  3474. in the original language.

  3475. That means that

3476. when we put our faith

  3477. and trust in Jesus,

  3478. we can know today

3479. what God will say to us

  3480. when we die

  3481. and appear before him

  3482. face to face.

  3483. And that means

  3484. that he's saying

  3485. that we're justified

  3486. in Jesus.

  3487. If I live another 40 years,

3488. all the 40 years worth

  3489. of resume writing stuff,

  3490. he's already declared

  3491. me right with him.

  3492. It's all irrelevant.

  3493. That I can know

3494. when I put my faith

  3495. and trust in Jesus

3496. that God will take him

  3497. instead of me,

3498. use him to see me,

3499. and he will declare me

  3500. right with himself.

  3501. He makes me right

  3502. with himself,

  3503. and I have nothing

  3504. that I can do

  3505. to add to it.

  3506. And that's why

  3507. the gospel creates

  3508. such glorious liberty,

  3509. that when this truth

  3510. starts to grip us,

  3511. I don't know

  3512. if this congregation

  3513. will be 500 people,

  3514. 5,000 people,

3515. 25 people in the future,

  3516. and I,

  3517. you know,

  3518. if it was 5,000,

  3519. I would be sure

  3520. something I would think

3521. that I could boast about

  3522. that would make me

  3523. somehow more valuable

  3524. to God,

  3525. but all of that,

  3526. it's completely

  3527. and utterly irrelevant

  3528. to God.

  3529. There's nothing

  3530. about my resume

  3531. that makes me

  3532. right with him.

  3533. It's all about

  3534. what Jesus does

3535. for me on the cross.

  3536. And as that truth

  3537. grips us,

3538. it gives us the chance,

  3539. the opportunity to risk,

  3540. that we can risk

3541. new things as a congregation

  3542. because our success

  3543. or failure

  3544. isn't going to depend

3545. upon how God receives us.

  3546. We already know

3547. his final word about it,

3548. and it means that we can

3549. start to look at the fact

  3550. that we,

3551. why is it that we are

  3552. so addicted to pornography,

3553. or why is it that we,

3554. when we're under a lot of stress,

3555. we have to go and buy

  3556. an expensive handbag,

3557. or why is it that

3558. when we're under a lot of stress,

3559. we have to go driving

3560. and we get really mad

3561. and it's sort of cathartic.

3562. And why is it that

3563. we do all of these things?

  3564. And when we understand

3565. that our rightness with God

  3566. does not depend upon

  3567. our resume,

  3568. that it's something

  3569. freely and graciously given,

3570. it gives us the strength

  3571. to take risks

  3572. for the kingdom,

3573. to take risks in love,

  3574. to take risks

3575. in being able to forgive

  3576. a person who's wronged us.

3577. It means that we can start

3578. to look at the idols

  3579. of our hearts

  3580. and what's going on

  3581. inside of us

  3582. and our weakness,

3583. and we don't have to be worried

  3584. that we will see

  3585. something within us

  3586. that will make God

  3587. want to turn himself

  3588. away from us,

3589. that it will be something

  3590. that will look bad

  3591. on a resume

  3592. because God pronounces

3593. when we put our faith

  3594. and trust in Jesus

3595. at what is for us

  3596. our death,

  3597. he pronounces us right

  3598. with him.

  3599. Not weighing our merits,

  3600. but pardoning our offenses.

  3601. Andrew,

  3602. could you put up

  3603. the final scripture text?

  3604. Could you all stand,

  3605. please?

3606. this is the overarching message

  3607. of Romans.

3608. Could you say it with me?

3609. For I am not ashamed

  3610. of the gospel,

3611. for it is the power

  3612. of God for salvation

  3613. to everyone who believes,

  3614. to the Jew first

3615. and also to the Greek.

  3616. For in the gospel,

  3617. the righteousness of God

  3618. is revealed from faith

  3619. to faith.

  3620. As it is written,

  3621. the righteous

  3622. shall live by faith.

  3623. The righteous

  3624. shall live by faith.

  3625. Those who are made

  3626. right with God,

  3627. whom God declares

  3628. right with him,

3629. we receive it by faith,

3630. we live it by faith,

  3631. we die by faith,

  3632. it's all by faith.

  3633. Let's bow our heads

  3634. in prayer.

  3635. Father,

  3636. thank you for Jesus.

  3637. Thank you for what

  3638. he did for us

  3639. on the cross.

  3640. Thank you,

  3641. Father,

  3642. that on the cross

  3643. as he died,

3644. he did what was needed

3645. so that we could be

  3646. made right with you.

  3647. Thank you,

  3648. Father,

  3649. that on the cross

3650. as he died for us,

3651. he made it so that

  3652. we could be redeemed

  3653. from the things

  3654. that bind us

3655. and put us in bondage,

3656. that we could be free

  3657. in you.

  3658. Thank you,

  3659. Father,

  3660. that as Jesus died

3661. for us on the cross,

  3662. that he provided

  3663. our satisfaction,

  3664. he is our propitiation,

  3665. that he dealt

3666. with all of the things

3667. that are out of whack

  3668. and punishment is needed

  3669. and he dealt with

  3670. all of these things

3671. on the cross for us.

  3672. Father,

  3673. make us disciples

  3674. of Jesus

  3675. who are gripped

  3676. by the gospel

  3677. and are therefore

3678. beginning to be freed up

3679. to live not for our own glory

3680. as if we are God's,

  3681. but for your glory

3682. because you are the only God,

  3683. you are the creator

  3684. of all things,

  3685. the sustainer

  3686. of all things,

3687. the end of all things.

  3688. Father,

  3689. make us disciples

  3690. of Jesus

  3691. gripped by the gospel

3692. to live for your glory

  3693. and this we ask

3694. in the name of Jesus.

  3695. Amen.
