  1. Father, you know how easily we forget what you teach.

  2. And you know, Father, how easily it is for us to depend upon our own self-righteousness and our own self-justification.

  3. And Father, you know how much our self-righteousness and our self-justification causes us trouble and beats us up.

  4. We ask, Father, that in your mercy you would pour out your Holy Spirit upon us, that you would expose to our hearts our addiction to our self-righteousness and self-justification.

  5. And that you would, Father, hollow us out and humble us so that we would hunger for the justification that only you give, that only you bring.

  6. And this we ask in the name of Jesus, your Son, and our Savior. Amen.

  7. Amen. Please be seated.

  8. There used to be a fellow that I'd see at least several times a week on Rideau Street.

  9. And he had, he was quite muscular, a bit shorter than me, quite muscular.

  10. He liked wearing in the warmer weather, even in quite cold weather, quite, you know, short T-shirts, tight T-shirts that showed off his arms and his chest and everything.

  11. And he had lots of tattoos.

  12. And he had two other things which, you know, I'll be honest with me, creeped me out a little bit.

  13. One of them was some odd tattoos on his face, which I always find a bit odd.

  14. And the other thing is he'd obviously had some bone, or some type of implants right up here in his head.

  15. He had a shaved head, so he had two horns sewn on his head.

  16. And so the combination of a shaved head with horns and tattoos on your face, it's a bit of an odd, it's, I never felt very, you know, comfortable with him.

  17. On one hand, I'd pray for him, and, you know, maybe I could share the gospel with him one day.

  18. But on the other hand, I was never disappointed that I didn't talk to him, if you know what I mean.

  19. That's, you know, these are all things I say, and then I confess them in the part of the service later on.

  20. But I don't, you know, I have no idea why he did those types of things.

  21. And I have no idea whether he was involved in devilish worship or demons or anything like that.

  22. But here's the thing, I, the longer I've been a Christian, the more I believe that every single one of us has some experience of the devil and some experience of demons.

  23. And by that, I don't mean that, I mean, maybe it might very well be one of the people that we had as a ministry intern quite a few years ago now.

  24. Before she had become a Christian, she was a witch.

  25. And then she came to faith, and she was a ministry intern here at the church.

  26. She'd been involved in Wicca.

  27. And I don't know, maybe some of you have at one point in time been involved.

  28. Maybe even today you're still involved with Wicca and spells.

  29. And if that's the case, we're glad you're here.

  30. But I think every single one of us, even if we don't have that type of experience of the devil, have an experience of the devil and the demons.

  31. And we do in the sense that every single one of us struggles with despair at different times.

  32. And every single one of us struggles with accusatory thoughts at different times.

  33. And every single one of us struggles at some time or another with thoughts or experiences or feelings that are deeply shameful.

  34. And we feel ashamed.

  35. And we feel despair.

  36. And we feel a real sense of accusation.

  37. And if you say that you've never experienced those things, I don't believe you.

  38. In fact, I don't think anybody here would believe you.

  39. And every single one of us has those experiences.

  40. In fact, many of you, maybe some of you this morning, as you're sitting here, in fact, have really been not even struggling with them.

  41. Because you're not struggling with them.

  42. But you can hardly even sit or stand.

  43. Because there's so many accusatory thoughts or despairing thoughts that are flooding into your mind and your heart and your will.

  44. And I think that if we have an experience of that, we have an experience of the devil.

  45. Because that's what the devil does to us.

  46. Whether we recognize him behind it or not.

  47. And the scripture text that we're going to look at today is a very, very powerful text to those of us who struggle with shame,

  48. who struggle with despair, and who struggle with accusatory thoughts.

  49. So it would be a great help to me.

  50. And it would be a great help to yourself if you have a Bible, if you open your Bible to Romans chapter 5.

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  51. We're preaching through the book of Romans.

  52. And today we're looking at Romans 5, verses 1 to 11.

    Romans 5:1–11

  53. And it's a very, very powerful text that speaks to those of us who struggle.

  54. And we all struggle at some time or another with despair, with accusatory thoughts,

  55. and just feelings of profound feelings of guilt and unworthiness.

  56. It's a powerful, powerful text that speaks directly to those experiences.

  57. And it begins like this.

  58. Romans chapter 5.

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  59. I'm reading from the English Standard Version.

  60. Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  61. Through him, we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand.

  62. And we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

  63. Actually, before we go any further, you know what we're going to do?

  64. Andrew, could you put that up on the screen?

  65. And we're going to read it all together.

  66. Romans 5.

  67. We're going to read it in a moment.

  68. And in fact, just if you're wondering,

  69. remember last week I asked you just to pray for me

  70. because I'm having more problems preaching on the book of Romans

  71. than any other book that I've ever preached on.

  72. And it's such a deep book.

  73. And every week, the more I study it, the more I just realize how deep and profound it is.

  74. And I just feel so unworthy every Sunday

  75. to try to even remotely unpack the depths and the riches of this book.

  76. So please pray for me.

  77. And I was going to come up with four points.

  78. You know, some preachers preach three-point sermons.

  79. John Stott knew a lot about preaching.

  80. His sermons always had four points.

  81. And I was going to do four points.

  82. And then I realized that these, there's four.

  83. Why on earth would I want you to remember my words

  84. when you could remember the Bible?

  85. And so we're just going to read this text.

  86. We're going to read it several times today

  87. because my four points are just the four basic phrases in these two verses.

  88. And so could you all read this with me?

  89. Therefore, since we have been justified by faith,

  90. we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  91. Through him we have also obtained access by faith

  92. into this grace in which we stand.

  93. And we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

  94. It's a really, really funny verse because it has two beginnings.

  95. Notice that, therefore and since.

  96. You know, usually you'll just have therefore or since,

  97. but it actually has two.

  98. It's actually one of the simple ways that the text wants us to understand

  99. that the very next thing that it says is very, very, very, very important.

  100. Therefore, since.

  101. And that the first thing that goes directly to our experience of accusation,

  102. despair, profound feelings of guilt, and profound feelings of shame,

  103. even if you've been a Christian for many, many years

  104. and you still struggle with these things,

  105. is that very first phrase.

  106. Did you notice what it says?

  107. It says, therefore, since we have been justified by faith.

  108. That's the first thing.

  109. In fact, in many ways, all I want to try to do this morning

  110. is try to help you to understand that phrase

  111. and the three consequences that the Bible tells us follow

  112. as we're gripped with this understanding that,

  113. therefore, since, we have been justified.

  114. We have been justified by faith.

  115. What justified means is that, you know,

  116. if I told, I think I shared with you last week,

  117. if I told you, you know, after the service,

  118. everybody who came has a PhD,

  119. that would just be completely and utterly absurd for me

  120. to tell you that you all have PhDs

  121. just because you came to a church service.

  122. I could say that,

  123. but I don't have the power or authority

  124. to make that type of declaration for you.

  125. It would be sort of like, you know,

  126. some people, you know, say,

  127. we just need a couple million dollars to buy a building,

  128. and I say, you know, maybe you'll give us that money,

  129. and some people will say,

  130. well, I could give you a check,

  131. I could write you a check,

  132. but it's going to bounce.

  133. Anybody can write a check,

  134. but not everybody can write checks

  135. that are going to bounce.

  136. And what this simple phrase is telling us,

  137. therefore, since we have been justified by faith,

  138. it wants us,

  139. it's just following what Paul has just said beforehand,

  140. and it's trying to help us to understand

  141. what Jesus accomplishes for us on the cross.

  142. And it's trying to help us to understand

  143. that because of what Jesus accomplishes for us

  144. when he dies upon the cross,

  145. that if we receive that with open hands,

  146. then God himself makes an authoritative,

  147. powerful declaration

  148. that you are now right with him.

  149. That what Paul has been trying to explain

  150. in the parts of the Bible up until now

  151. is that Jesus dying upon the cross

  152. is God's provision for human beings

  153. so that human beings can be right with him.

  154. And when we put our faith in Jesus,

  155. God speaks over even the worst person

  156. that he says to you and me,

  157. you are justified.

  158. And what that means is that

  159. I am declaring,

  160. I have the authority,

  161. and I have the power,

  162. and I have the right

  163. to make these declarations.

  164. And because you have received

  165. what Jesus did for you on the cross,

  166. I declare that you are now right with me.

  167. And that's what Paul wants to remind us

  168. by saying,

  169. therefore,

  170. since we have been justified by faith.

  171. But some of you might be saying,

  172. George,

  173. okay, that just sounds really, really, really nice.

  174. But gosh, George,

  175. if you could just,

  176. you know,

  177. if I could actually just have the courage

  178. to talk to you really honestly,

  179. if you just knew

  180. how many times

  181. I either don't come to church

  182. or I can barely come to church

  183. because I'm so filled

  184. with accusatory thoughts,

  185. if you just realized,

  186. George,

  187. if God realized

  188. how hard it is for me

  189. to sit in a church

  190. when I'm just filled with shame,

  191. if you realize, George,

  192. how hard it was for me,

  193. I'm not sure that sounds

  194. all very nice, George,

  195. but it doesn't really deal

  196. anything at all

  197. with these very,

  198. very powerful experiences

  199. of accusation and guilt

  200. that I struggle with.

  201. Like,

  202. how,

  203. that sounds really good,

  204. but I don't know

  205. if that can actually be true for me.

  206. It's true when I'm feeling good,

  207. but it's not true

  208. a lot of the time.

  209. Well,

  210. you know,

  211. it's really interesting

  212. because what Paul does here,

  213. the therefore sins,

  214. he sort of is looking at the back,

  215. but he anticipates

  216. our objection like that

  217. in the part that comes

  218. just a little bit after this.

  219. I don't know if you noticed it

  220. or remembered it

  221. when Andrea was reading.

  222. If you look in your Bibles,

  223. look what Paul says

  224. in verses 6 and following.

  225. He says,

  226. for while we were still weak,

  227. at the right time,

  228. Christ died

  229. for the ungodly.

  230. For one will scarcely die

  231. for a righteous person,

  232. though perhaps

  233. for a good person

  234. one would dare

  235. even to die.

  236. But God

  237. shows his love

  238. for us

  239. in that while

  240. we were still

  241. sinners,

  242. Christ

  243. died

  244. for us.

  245. What is this text saying?

  246. This text,

  247. you see,

  248. the problem I have

  249. when I'm getting

  250. overwhelmed

  251. with guilt

  252. and when I'm getting

  253. overwhelmed

  254. with shame

  255. and when I'm getting

  256. overwhelmed

  257. with accusatory thoughts

  258. is I start to actually,

  259. it's as if,

  260. you know,

  261. I said a couple of weeks ago

  262. that the last idol

  263. that dies

  264. in a Christian's life

  265. is the idol

  266. of self-righteousness

  267. and the idol

  268. of self-justification.

  269. And it's as if

  270. I somehow believe

  271. that God

  272. looked at me

  273. and when he looked

  274. at me,

  275. he said,

  276. woe is George ever good.

  277. Look at all the good

  278. things George does.

  279. You know,

  280. look at those times

  281. he's faithful to his wife.

  282. Look at those times

  283. he's good with his kids.

  284. Look at those times.

  285. Whoa,

  286. he visited somebody.

  287. Whoa.

  288. And so,

  289. I'm just going to do something

  290. that's going to top up

  291. George's goodness

  292. because George's goodness

  293. is this high

  294. and I don't know,

  295. I need him to be this high

  296. to get to heaven

  297. and so I'm just going to

  298. top up George's goodness.

  299. And that's sort of

  300. what goes on

  301. in our souls

  302. and in our thoughts

  303. when it,

  304. but what this text

  305. is saying

  306. is that God

  307. didn't look around

  308. at the good church people.

  309. and he didn't look around

  310. and see all the successful people

  311. and he didn't look around

  312. and see all the people

  313. who are really smart

  314. and could remember

  315. complicated theological systems

  316. and remember Bible verses.

  317. He looked down

  318. and what did he see?

  319. He saw weak people

  320. and he saw ungodly people

  321. and he saw sinful people

  322. and he saw unrighteous people

  323. and he didn't die

  324. for the good people

  325. who just needed something

  326. to top up their goodness.

  327. He died for weak people

  328. like you and me,

  329. for ungodly people

  330. like you and me,

  331. for sinful people

  332. like you and me,

  333. for unrighteous people

  334. like you and me.

  335. That's who he died for.

  336. That's who he declares

  337. right with himself

  338. when we put our faith

  339. and trust in Jesus.

  340. Those people.

  341. That's who he's referring to.

  342. Not the success.

  343. As I've been studying Romans,

  344. I now increasingly understand

  345. all that old hymnody

  346. that talks about

  347. how our righteous acts

  348. are like filthy rags.

  349. And until I started

  350. to study Romans,

  351. I didn't really,

  352. it didn't really grip me

  353. how deeply

  354. my idolatry

  355. and our idolatry

  356. to self-righteousness

  357. and self-justification

  358. robs us from thinking

  359. about who it was

  360. that Christ died for.

  361. And the wonderful thing

  362. as I've shared before

  363. about this word justified

  364. justified

  365. is that this word justified

  366. means that right now

  367. I know

  368. when I put my faith

  369. and trust in Jesus

  370. what God's final word

  371. is about me.

  372. I don't know if Jesus

  373. is going to come back

  374. in five minutes.

  375. I don't know if I'm going to die

  376. in my drive home.

  377. I don't know if I'm going to live

  378. another 50 years.

  379. Because I don't know the future.

  380. But I don't know the future,

  381. but I can know one thing

  382. about the future.

  383. that when I put my faith

  384. and trust in Jesus,

  385. God declares me.

  386. He has the authority.

  387. He has the power.

  388. And He declares me

  389. right with Himself

  390. because I have put my faith

  391. and trust in Him.

  392. And so I can now, today,

  393. know God's final word about me

  394. that will be spoken

  395. in the last day

  396. at the final judgment.

  397. And you can know

  398. that word too.

  399. And God's word

  400. and His final judgment

  401. trumps the judgment

  402. made by teachers,

  403. the judgment made

  404. by governments,

  405. the judgments made

  406. about your social class

  407. or your education

  408. or your accomplishments.

  409. It trumps the judgment

  410. made by wives

  411. and husbands

  412. and fathers

  413. and children

  414. and relatives

  415. and sports coaches.

  416. God's judgment

  417. trumps

  418. every judgment

  419. like that.

  420. And that's what

  421. God wants us to.

  422. That's why it says,

  423. therefore,

  424. since

  425. we have been justified

  426. by faith.

  427. In fact,

  428. it even goes beyond this

  429. and it even actually tries to,

  430. Paul tries to,

  431. to make us to understand

  432. because he knows

  433. how the devil can say,

  434. yeah, yeah, yeah,

  435. that's all right.

  436. But what about those times

  437. when you just said,

  438. I know God told me to do this,

  439. but I don't want to do this.

  440. And you might even resent

  441. that God has told you

  442. certain things to do.

  443. It might just make you

  444. angry at God

  445. and as soon as you say,

  446. well,

  447. what about justified by faith

  448. and all that,

  449. and then,

  450. excuse me,

  451. the devil brings

  452. all these times

  453. where we've actually

  454. been an enmity to God

  455. into our minds

  456. and God anticipates that

  457. in giving us an image

  458. of what his son did

  459. for us on the cross.

  460. I like reading,

  461. you know,

  462. thriller types books

  463. and some of the books

  464. will talk about,

  465. you know,

  466. war and stuff like that

  467. and I like reading novels

  468. like that

  469. and there's a very,

  470. very common phrase

  471. in a lot of those books.

  472. Maybe somebody's coming

  473. to go a very,

  474. very difficult mission

  475. or they have to protect

  476. a very,

  477. very different,

  478. a very,

  479. very difficult place

  480. and one of the other soldiers,

  481. one of the soldiers

  482. asks another soldier,

  483. are you willing to die

  484. for this?

  485. And the soldier will say,

  486. I'm not going to do this

  487. so I'll die for my country.

  488. I'm doing this

  489. so that the other guys

  490. will die for their country.

  491. That's why I'm trained.

  492. I'm not trained

  493. to die for my country.

  494. I'm trained

  495. to be so effective

  496. at killing

  497. that the enemy

  498. will die

  499. for their cause.

  500. And that's just

  501. how we understand

  502. how it is in war.

  503. But did you notice

  504. not only in verses 6 to 8

  505. that reminds us

  506. that when God says,

  507. therefore,

  508. since we have been

  509. justified by faith

  510. and justified means

  511. that we put our faith

  512. and trust in Jesus

  513. and what he's accomplished

  514. for us on the cross

  515. and then God

  516. who has the authority

  517. and the power

  518. to make a declaration

  519. declares us

  520. to be right with himself,

  521. he does it not only

  522. for weak,

  523. ungodly,

  524. sinful people,

  525. he does it for people

  526. who were his enemies.

  527. He does it for you and me.

  528. Did you notice that?

  529. Look at what it says

  530. in verses 9 and 10.

  531. Actually,

  532. we'll go up to verse 8.

  533. But God shows

  534. his love for us

  535. in that while

  536. we were still sinners,

  537. Christ died for us.

  538. And then notice again,

  539. it's just so reverses it,

  540. but the double thing

  541. to make sure we notice,

  542. since therefore

  543. we have blood,

  544. justified by the fact

  545. that he died,

  546. he shed his blood for us.

  547. It's a concrete image

  548. to make us see that

  549. we're not just talking

  550. about some type

  551. of imaginary story,

  552. we're talking about

  553. the fact that

  554. if you went back

  555. in a time machine,

  556. you would see Jesus,

  557. the blood coming

  558. from his wounds

  559. in his head,

  560. from the thorns

  561. that were on his brow,

  562. and you would see

  563. the blood dripping

  564. from his hands

  565. and his feet,

  566. and you would see

  567. the blood dripping

  568. and pooling on the ground

  569. from the whips

  570. that he had on the back,

  571. and you would see

  572. that blood dripping,

  573. and then you would see

  574. that the blood

  575. no longer drips

  576. because he's dead.

  577. There's that final

  578. few moments,

  579. but then the blood,

  580. heart starts pumping,

  581. he's died,

  582. and it's a powerful,

  583. a powerful,

  584. grounded image

  585. of death.

  586. for those of you

  587. who think in pictures,

  588. and images are really important,

  589. it's a text speaking

  590. directly to you

  591. to think of the blood,

  592. and so in verse 9,

  593. it says,

  594. since therefore

  595. we have now been justified

  596. by his blood,

  597. by his death,

  598. much more shall we be saved

  599. by him from the wrath of God,

  600. for if while we were enemies,

  601. we were reconciled to God

  602. by the death of his son,

  603. much more,

  604. now that we are reconciled,

  605. shall we be saved

  606. by his life.

  607. More than that,

  608. we also rejoice in God

  609. through our Lord Jesus Christ,

  610. through whom we have now

  611. received reconciliation.

  612. And here the Bible

  613. is giving us this other image

  614. of what it is that Jesus,

  615. as he dies upon the cross,

  616. and that what it is

  617. that he accomplishes

  618. for us on the cross.

  619. And we've already seen

  620. different images

  621. that all of the anger

  622. and the wrath

  623. that we maybe would labor under,

  624. an image to understand

  625. what Jesus accomplishes

  626. for us on the cross,

  627. is that in the cross,

  628. as Jesus dies for us,

  629. he swallows all the wrath

  630. and all the anger

  631. that we could possibly fear

  632. or think or imagine

  633. or that could be claimed against us,

  634. that he in his death

  635. swallows that wrath against us.

  636. And we've already seen

  637. in the Bible

  638. that on the cross,

  639. that all of the things

  640. that make us enslaved,

  641. that the things

  642. that we are slaved to

  643. in terms of how other people

  644. think about us,

  645. our slavery to trying

  646. to make ourselves righteous,

  647. our slavery to making ourselves

  648. think that we can justify ourselves,

  649. our slavery to things

  650. like debt or money

  651. or sex

  652. or having things be perfect

  653. and all of the things

  654. that we are slaved to,

  655. that Jesus on his death

  656. is the one

  657. who swallows those things

  658. and he is our great redeemer.

  659. And we've seen the image

  660. for those of us

  661. who struggle with money

  662. and we worry about

  663. how we're going to pay those bills.

  664. And the Bible has given us

  665. this image

  666. that imagine every single debt

  667. that is ever possibly owed by you

  668. that you could never pay,

  669. that would completely

  670. and utterly crush you,

  671. that on the cross,

  672. Jesus deals with

  673. all of those debts for you.

  674. And now we see

  675. in this language

  676. of reconciliation

  677. the language of friendship.

  678. We see the image

  679. of two really, really good friends

  680. sitting in Tim Hortons

  681. or sitting in Starbucks

  682. or sitting on somebody's porch,

  683. maybe in the spring or the fall

  684. and you're on the swing

  685. and you're just talking

  686. and you're just really, really close

  687. and you're pouring your hearts out

  688. and it's a beautiful day

  689. and you're completely and utterly

  690. just at one with this person

  691. and you're both sharing your heart

  692. and that's the image here.

  693. That it's the image of,

  694. it's the image of those of us

  695. who worry about,

  696. it's telling us that

  697. there's been many times

  698. in our lives

  699. that we have to understand

  700. that we have made,

  701. that we are at enmity with God.

  702. But God has never been

  703. at enmity with you and me.

  704. He sees our rage against Him

  705. when He impinges upon our life

  706. and His response was just,

  707. I know you find me your enemy.

  708. I know that in your heart of hearts

  709. there are times

  710. that you would like to speak

  711. just like those soldiers do

  712. in the movies and books

  713. that are popular in your culture,

  714. that you go into battle

  715. not so that you will die

  716. for your country

  717. but so that God will die.

  718. Somebody else will die.

  719. And I know that's what

  720. in your heart of hearts

  721. you sometimes think and experience

  722. and it was while you were thinking this

  723. that I died upon the cross for you.

  724. You might view me as your enemy,

  725. He says to you and me,

  726. but I do not view you as my enemy.

  727. And I will die upon the cross

  728. so that on the cross

  729. we see God dealing with all

  730. that has kept us at enmity from God.

  731. It's all dealt with by Jesus

  732. when He dies upon the cross.

  733. And Paul is saying,

  734. just think for a second,

  735. if God knew

  736. that we were at enmity with Him

  737. and still Jesus died upon the cross for us

  738. while we were enemies,

  739. imagine how He'll treat us

  740. now that Jesus has risen from the dead

  741. and dealt with all of our enmity

  742. against God.

  743. Therefore, since we have been justified by faith.

  744. Could we all just say this whole Scripture text together?

  745. Therefore, since we have been justified by faith,

  746. we have peace with God

  747. through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  748. Through Him, we have also obtained access by faith

  749. into this grace in which we stand.

  750. And we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

  751. Some of you might say,

  752. okay, George, that's...

  753. I don't know if it's...

  754. I don't know if I...

  755. I don't know if I've really grasped that before.

  756. That I don't have to worry about...

  757. I don't have to worry about...

  758. about the accusatory thoughts.

  759. that those aren't coming from God

  760. because all of the accusations

  761. were dealt with by Jesus.

  762. All of my sense of indebtedness and obligation

  763. and being crushed by obligation

  764. has been dealt with by Jesus.

  765. All of the enmity and rage

  766. I sometimes have felt that God

  767. or other people, part of His creation,

  768. has been dealt with by Jesus.

  769. All of the anger has been dealt with.

  770. All of the things that enslave me

  771. and so make me feel with guilt

  772. have been dealt with by Jesus and the cross.

  773. And that God,

  774. seeing all of that

  775. and knowing all of that,

  776. He sent Jesus to die for me

  777. when I was weak and ungodly

  778. and a sinner.

  779. But I don't feel it.

  780. I don't feel it.

  781. That's a really powerful

  782. and that's a very, very common thing.

  783. And in fact,

  784. if you look at that second thing,

  785. the second point up there,

  786. it wants to say that

  787. because we have,

  788. we've been justified by faith,

  789. one of the three consequences

  790. is that we have peace with God

  791. through our Lord Jesus Christ,

  792. but we don't feel it.

  793. In fact,

  794. here are some of our religious traditions.

  795. The devil uses them to fool us.

  796. Those of you who've been growing up

  797. in reformed traditions,

  798. the devil has used the doctrine of election

  799. to cause great mischief

  800. for those of you who've grown up

  801. in reformed traditions.

  802. Because you have this sense

  803. that God will only,

  804. you don't think you're part of the elect

  805. because the fact of the matter is

  806. is you find church boring.

  807. Or on Sunday afternoons,

  808. you'd rather not go off

  809. and witness to the poor

  810. or pack things for the poor.

  811. What you'd really like to do

  812. on Sunday morning

  813. is sit down with a couple of beers

  814. and a big bag of chips

  815. and watch football all afternoon.

  816. You don't feel like

  817. you're part of the elect.

  818. And a choice of going to a prayer meeting

  819. on a Thursday night

  820. or going out to have a beer

  821. with your buddies.

  822. In the bar,

  823. you'd always choose beer

  824. with your buddies.

  825. And so therefore,

  826. you're not part of the elect

  827. because you don't feel like

  828. you're part of the elect.

  829. The devil has used that doctrine

  830. in reformed churches

  831. to cause great lack of confidence

  832. and get you to focus

  833. on all the wrong things.

  834. I'm going to tell you

  835. to forget about election.

  836. Like, it's almost as if

  837. it's one of those things

  838. that you have to just

  839. completely and utterly ignore.

  840. Why?

  841. Because the Bible doesn't say,

  842. for those of you,

  843. Jesus died upon the cross

  844. for those who like to go to church

  845. on Sunday mornings naturally

  846. and those who naturally

  847. like to pack shoeboxes

  848. for the poor on the afternoons

  849. and those who naturally

  850. would much rather listen

  851. to a Matt Chandler pod talk

  852. than watch an NFL football game.

  853. And I've only died.

  854. No, he dies for the weak,

  855. ungodly, unrighteous,

  856. sinful people.

  857. That's who he died for.

  858. And it's not a matter

  859. of trying to work up

  860. some type of feeling of election

  861. or some type of accomplishment

  862. in your moral accomplishment

  863. in your life

  864. so you can think you're elect

  865. that now he accepts you.

  866. Forget about all of that.

  867. It's all wrong.

  868. wrong.

  869. You put your faith

  870. and trust in Jesus

  871. as a weak, ungodly,

  872. sinful person.

  873. Maybe as a person

  874. with next to no interest

  875. in spiritual things,

  876. but you put your faith

  877. and trust in Jesus

  878. and he deals

  879. with everything on the cross.

  880. He declares you right

  881. with himself.

  882. And some of us,

  883. we're not from that doctrine.

  884. And some of us are saying,

  885. gosh, George,

  886. I don't even know

  887. what this doctrine of election is.

  888. We're actually going to talk about it

  889. in a couple of weeks in Romans.

  890. But for many of us

  891. who are from more Wesleyan

  892. or Pentecostal churches,

  893. we have a different problem.

  894. And the devil has used

  895. an emphasis upon emotion

  896. or certain experiences

  897. to make us think

  898. that we aren't loved by him.

  899. That, you know,

  900. we just don't feel our salvation

  901. or, you know,

  902. we just don't feel

  903. the joy of the Lord

  904. and we just don't have

  905. these experiences

  906. like we used to.

  907. And the devil uses this

  908. to make us think,

  909. oh, if you're really a Christian,

  910. you'll have these regular,

  911. profound experiences

  912. of being convicted by sin

  913. or you'll have these regular experiences

  914. of being profoundly close to God

  915. or you'll have this final triumph

  916. over temptation and sin

  917. because if you're a real Christian,

  918. you will no longer

  919. have a problem with pornography.

  920. If you're a real Christian,

  921. you will no longer

  922. have these problems with debt.

  923. If you're a real Christian,

  924. you will no longer

  925. have these problems

  926. of lack of forgiveness

  927. or of anger.

  928. If you're a real Christian,

  929. you have some type of breakthrough

  930. on these types of things

  931. connected with an emotion.

  932. And I'm going to tell you

  933. that the Bible is saying

  934. to forget all of that.

  935. Forget all of that.

  936. It's a lie from the devil.

  937. Therefore, we have been justified by faith.

  938. Therefore, since we have been justified by faith,

  939. we have peace with God

  940. through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  941. And the Bible's description of peace

  942. is something objective,

  943. not something subjective.

  944. I'll give you an example.

  945. I have no fear of flying.

  946. I know this is going to sound a bit crazy,

  947. but I actually think,

  948. you know when they're going through

  949. all that thing up at the front

  950. at the plane or the little thing

  951. if you've flown lately

  952. about what happens

  953. in the event of an emergency?

  954. Well, first of all,

  955. if it was me,

  956. I would just say

  957. if there's going to be an emergency,

  958. that's when you should actually pray.

  959. Because, you know what,

  960. you're about to meet your maker.

  961. And I actually think

  962. that dying in a plane crash

  963. is actually a pretty good way to go.

  964. That it would be pretty quick.

  965. I know I'm weird,

  966. but I think that if I'm going to die,

  967. a plane crash is pretty good.

  968. Or a plane accident,

  969. you know, all of a sudden,

  970. I don't know,

  971. a bomb goes off,

  972. you just die.

  973. Like, you know,

  974. one minute you're,

  975. I don't know,

  976. watching Ant-Man

  977. on the screen,

  978. and the next minute,

  979. you're in the throne room of God.

  980. I don't know.

  981. I mean, it would be really hard

  982. for my wife and kids,

  983. but, you know,

  984. it wouldn't be that bad for me.

  985. But I know that some people

  986. have a terrible, terrible,

  987. terrible, terrible fear of flying.

  988. And I've sometimes sat beside people

  989. that you didn't realize

  990. how long somebody

  991. could have white knuckles

  992. until you've sat beside some people.

  993. But here's the thing.

  994. My confidence in the plane

  995. or another person's nervousness

  996. of the plane

  997. my peace

  998. or the other person's peace

  999. is actually completely

  1000. and utterly irrelevant

  1001. to whether or not

  1002. the plane crashes.

  1003. Isn't it?

  1004. Completely and utterly irrelevant.

  1005. What matters

  1006. is the competency

1007. of the plane and the pilot.

  1008. And what is here

1009. Paul has been talking about

1010. is that you want to have

  1011. peace with God.

  1012. That's an objective thing.

  1013. Because of what Jesus

1014. has done for you on the cross,

1015. when you accept that in faith,

1016. you realize that you have

  1017. to trust in Jesus

1018. to make you right with himself.

  1019. God objectively accomplishes

  1020. something for you.

  1021. And he sure wishes

1022. you had more times of peace

  1023. where you had trust

  1024. and confidence in it.

  1025. But whether you have

  1026. feelings of peace

  1027. or whether you don't

  1028. are irrelevant

1029. to the reality of the situation.

  1030. In fact,

1031. that's one of the interesting things

1032. if you just sort of

1033. jump down a little bit

  1034. to verses 3 and 4 and 5,

1035. it helps you to understand

1036. something about what he says there.

1037. If you know down there,

1038. because Paul in a moment

1039. is going to talk about,

  1040. look, verse 3,

  1041. do you suppose,

  1042. oh man,

  1043. sorry, I should read

  1044. the right chapter,

  1045. that helps, yes.

  1046. Verse 3 over here,

  1047. and not only that,

  1048. but we rejoice

  1049. in our sufferings,

  1050. knowing that suffering

  1051. produces endurance,

  1052. endurance,

  1053. and endurance produces

  1054. character,

  1055. and character produces hope,

  1056. and hope does not

  1057. put us to shame

  1058. because God's love

  1059. has been poured

  1060. into our hearts

  1061. through the Holy Spirit

1062. who has been given to us.

1063. And I'm not going to really

  1064. talk very much today

  1065. about how it is

1066. that the peace in all

  1067. deals with suffering.

1068. We're going to talk about that

1069. again in a couple of weeks

1070. when we get into Romans 8,

1071. a far more profound reflection

1072. upon suffering in the gospel.

  1073. But you'll notice here

  1074. that what the Bible

  1075. is saying is that

  1076. there's two witnesses

1077. that we can call out to

1078. in terms of our feelings

  1079. that bear witness

  1080. to the fact that

  1081. we have been justified

1082. by what Jesus has done

1083. for us on the cross.

  1084. The first witness

  1085. is in a sense

  1086. an objective witness.

  1087. We should just look

  1088. at the cross

  1089. and think about it.

  1090. Jesus died in history.

  1091. He lived in history.

  1092. He died in history.

  1093. The tomb in history

  1094. was empty

  1095. and is empty.

  1096. And he rose again

  1097. from the dead.

1098. And we can just think

  1099. about the fact

  1100. that on the cross

  1101. Jesus died

  1102. and paid for all

1103. that keeps us from God

  1104. and he did it

  1105. while I was weak.

1106. He did it while I was ungodly.

1107. He did it while I was a sinner.

1108. He did it while I was his enemy.

1109. He did it while I was in debt.

1110. And he did it for me.

1111. And I can think about it.

1112. And I can remember it.

1113. That's one of the reasons

  1114. why it's so important

  1115. for Christians

  1116. to hear the gospel

1117. time and time and time again.

  1118. But the other witness

  1119. is Jesus,

1120. God doesn't just give us

  1121. an external,

  1122. objective witness,

  1123. but he does

  1124. and it's very precious.

  1125. He also pours out

  1126. the Holy Spirit

  1127. upon his children.

  1128. There's an inner witness

  1129. of the Holy Spirit

  1130. that we maybe

  1131. do not feel

  1132. all of the time.

  1133. Maybe we only feel

  1134. at some time.

1135. But I'm going to tell you

  1136. brothers and sisters,

1137. if you've given your life

  1138. to Jesus,

1139. it is a good thing

  1140. to ask the Father

  1141. to pour out

  1142. his Holy Spirit

  1143. upon you.

1144. It is a good thing

  1145. to ask him

  1146. to pour out

  1147. his Holy Spirit

  1148. upon you

  1149. that you might know

  1150. his love for you.

  1151. That you might dwell

  1152. and rest

1153. in his love for you.

1154. And so when it says here,

  1155. therefore,

  1156. since we have been

  1157. justified by faith,

1158. we have peace with God

1159. through our Lord Jesus Christ,

  1160. he's talking about

  1161. something objective.

  1162. The second thing,

  1163. I know my time

  1164. is starting to come

  1165. to an end,

1166. but it's the next thing

  1167. that for me personally

  1168. has meant the most

  1169. to me this week.

  1170. Just for me personally

1171. as I've reflected upon it.

  1172. It sounds,

  1173. it's a really,

  1174. it's the hardest part

  1175. to say,

  1176. but actually,

  1177. let's put it out,

  1178. can we all say

  1179. this whole verse together

1180. and then I'll point out

1181. to you which is the part

  1182. that's meant the most

  1183. to me this week.

1184. Can we say it again?

  1185. Therefore,

  1186. since we have been

  1187. justified by faith,

1188. we have peace with God

1189. through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  1190. Through him,

  1191. we have also obtained

  1192. access by faith

  1193. into this grace

  1194. in which we stand

  1195. and we rejoice

  1196. in hope

1197. of the glory of God.

  1198. Personally,

  1199. what's really struck me

  1200. this week

  1201. is the third part.

  1202. we have also

  1203. obtained access

  1204. by faith

  1205. into this grace

  1206. in which we stand.

  1207. And it,

  1208. I have to confess

1209. when I first saw it,

1210. it didn't jump out at me.

  1211. But it's,

  1212. remember,

1213. Paul is here telling us

  1214. three different consequences,

  1215. three things for us

  1216. to understand

  1217. about the benefits

  1218. of the fact

  1219. that we've been justified

  1220. by what God

  1221. has done for us

  1222. on the cross

1223. in the person of Jesus.

  1224. and one of these

  1225. consequences

  1226. is that

  1227. as I stand here

  1228. before you now,

  1229. on one hand,

  1230. I stand before you

1231. in the Ottawa Little Theatre,

1232. but on the other hand,

  1233. objectively,

1234. I stand in the throne room

  1235. of God

  1236. in his gracious presence.

  1237. And so does

  1238. the weakest Christian.

  1239. So does

  1240. the most guilt-ridden Christian.

  1241. The most ignorant Christian.

  1242. So does

  1243. the Christian

  1244. who has been

  1245. most beat up.

  1246. That when you put

  1247. your faith

  1248. and trust

  1249. in Jesus,

  1250. the image here

  1251. is,

  1252. and it's a very,

  1253. very powerful image,

  1254. because if you think

1255. about it for a second,

  1256. how could I dwell

  1257. with the Queen?

  1258. I mean,

  1259. that would be impossible.

  1260. That could only happen

  1261. if somebody

  1262. who knew the Queen

  1263. and the Queen loved

  1264. was to say,

  1265. George,

1266. come and meet the Queen.

  1267. And in fact,

  1268. say,

  1269. not only Queen Elizabeth,

  1270. George needs a place

  1271. to stay.

  1272. And he's my buddy.

  1273. He's my friend.

  1274. I like him.

1275. You're going to like him too,

  1276. Queen Elizabeth.

1277. Can he stay with you?

1278. He's going to stay with me.

1279. We're going to bunk together

  1280. in your house.

  1281. Eat at your table.

  1282. And we wouldn't expect

1283. that we could do that

  1284. to the Queen

  1285. by ourselves,

  1286. but that's in a sense

1287. what the Bible is saying

1288. that Jesus does for us.

1289. When we put our faith

  1290. and trust in him,

1291. it's as if Jesus takes us

  1292. and puts his arm

  1293. around your shoulders

  1294. and ushers you

  1295. into the very presence

  1296. of God.

1297. And until you see God

  1298. face to face,

  1299. you are always

  1300. in the throne room

  1301. of God.

  1302. I mean,

  1303. part of the thing

  1304. that really struck me

  1305. this week

  1306. is that really,

  1307. right now,

  1308. God is basically

  1309. only seen

  1310. through his created order.

  1311. Maybe at times

  1312. we have glimpses

  1313. of glory

  1314. and have glimpses

  1315. of his presence.

  1316. And 2 Corinthians

  1317. reminds us

  1318. that these are all

  1319. just the smallest,

  1320. slightest tastes

  1321. of an eventual glory

  1322. that will fill us,

  1323. that if we were

  1324. to experience it now

  1325. in our fallen bodies

  1326. would unmake us.

  1327. But this is

  1328. our Father's world.

  1329. The planet Earth

  1330. is always

  1331. in the throne room

  1332. of God.

  1333. I don't go anywhere

  1334. on this planet

  1335. without being

  1336. in the throne room

  1337. of God.

  1338. And that's how

  1339. I am to understand

  1340. how I live

  1341. in the world.

  1342. How,

  1343. if you're a civil servant,

  1344. how you serve

  1345. as a civil servant.

  1346. Sure,

  1347. on one hand,

  1348. you're in cubicle land,

  1349. but really,

1350. you are in the throne

  1351. room of God

  1352. in his presence.

  1353. Can you just say

  1354. this verse with me

  1355. one final time?

  1356. Therefore,

  1357. since we have been

  1358. justified by faith,

  1359. we have peace

  1360. with God

  1361. through our Lord

  1362. Jesus Christ.

  1363. Through him,

  1364. we have also

  1365. obtained access

  1366. by faith

  1367. into this grace

  1368. in which we stand.

  1369. And we rejoice

  1370. in hope

1371. of the glory of God.

  1372. By the way,

  1373. I forgot to mention

1374. that in the original language,

  1375. this idea of standing

  1376. is permanent residence,

  1377. permanent,

  1378. proper place.

  1379. Just this final benefit.

  1380. Do you know this?

  1381. That we rejoice

  1382. in hope

1383. of the glory of God.

  1384. One of the things

  1385. that the Bible

  1386. wants us to have

  1387. is a certain hope.

  1388. A certain hope

  1389. that God's final word

  1390. has been spoken

  1391. about you.

  1392. A hope

  1393. that that final word

  1394. has been spoken

  1395. about you

  1396. and that even though

  1397. on one hand,

1398. if you live long enough,

  1399. your body's just

  1400. going to get weak,

  1401. it will no longer

  1402. be strong.

  1403. We always,

  1404. as the Bible says,

  1405. hold this treasure

  1406. in jars of clay.

  1407. But the final word

  1408. about us

  1409. will be to enter

  1410. into God's glory.

  1411. And the final word

  1412. about us

1413. that we can know today

  1414. is that God

  1415. is making us,

  1416. remaking us

  1417. in his image

  1418. so that ordinary

  1419. human beings

  1420. like us

  1421. can dwell

  1422. in his glory

  1423. and reflect his glory

  1424. throughout the entire

  1425. created order.

  1426. and the witness

  1427. of the Holy Spirit

  1428. in our lives

  1429. is to grant us

  1430. that type of

  1431. not presumptuous hope

  1432. but confident hope.

  1433. The reason that we

  1434. can take risks

  1435. of looking at

  1436. what's going on

  1437. in our lives,

  1438. the reason that we

  1439. can take risks

1440. to go to faraway places

  1441. to share

  1442. the gospel,

  1443. the reason that we

  1444. can take risks

1445. in our places of work

  1446. that we stand

  1447. for those things

  1448. that are right

  1449. and that are true

1450. and that we bear witness

  1451. to Jesus,

  1452. the reason that we

  1453. can have all of

  1454. these types of stands

  1455. is that the more

1456. that we have this sense

  1457. that God's final word

  1458. has already been

  1459. spoken about us,

  1460. that he's not

  1461. weighing our merits

  1462. but he's pardoned

  1463. our offenses

1464. as the gospel grips us

  1465. more and more

  1466. and more.

  1467. It allows us

  1468. to take risks.

  1469. It allows us

  1470. to look at ourselves.

  1471. It allows us

  1472. to confront our shame

  1473. and confront

  1474. our guilt

  1475. and confront

  1476. our wrongdoing.

  1477. I'll just ask you

1478. to stand for a moment.

  1479. Andrew,

  1480. could you put

  1481. the Romans 1 text

  1482. up please?

  1483. Every week,

  1484. if you're a guest,

  1485. you don't know this,

  1486. but every week

  1487. we've been saying

  1488. Romans 1,

  1489. 16 to 17.

  1490. It's the text

  1491. at the beginning

1492. of the book of Romans

  1493. that basically

  1494. summarizes the whole

  1495. message of the book

  1496. of Romans.

  1497. And actually,

  1498. why don't we just

  1499. say it together

  1500. and then I'll say

  1501. a final thing

  1502. before we pray.

1503. For I am not ashamed

  1504. of the gospel,

1505. for it is the power

  1506. of God for salvation

  1507. to all who believe.

  1508. For in the gospel,

  1509. the righteousness

  1510. of God is revealed

  1511. from faith to faith.

  1512. As it is written,

  1513. the righteous

  1514. shall live by faith.

  1515. See,

1516. the text is telling us

  1517. that God acts

  1518. with power

  1519. to make us right

  1520. with himself.

  1521. and we enter

  1522. into this power

  1523. by faith.

  1524. And the Christian life

  1525. goes from faith

  1526. to faith,

  1527. from strength

  1528. to strength.

  1529. It's shared

  1530. from my faith

  1531. to you

  1532. so that you might

  1533. have faith.

  1534. That's how it's shared

  1535. and that's how

  1536. it's grown.

  1537. And so,

  1538. if you this morning

  1539. have never put

  1540. your faith and trust

  1541. in Jesus,

  1542. there is no better

  1543. time than today

1544. to call out to him.

  1545. He died

  1546. for people

  1547. who don't like church.

  1548. He died

  1549. for people

  1550. who'd rather

  1551. make lots of money

  1552. than read the Bible.

  1553. He died

  1554. for people

  1555. who'd rather

  1556. spend time

  1557. in a bar

  1558. than in a church.

  1559. He died

  1560. for ordinary people

  1561. like you and me.

1562. And for those of you

  1563. who've grown up

  1564. in church homes,

1565. I just want to tell you

  1566. the final idol

  1567. to die

  1568. is self-righteousness

  1569. and self-justification.

1570. And you've got to realize

  1571. that he didn't die

  1572. because you're good.

  1573. He died

  1574. knowing who you are

  1575. to the depths

  1576. of your spirit

  1577. and still he died

  1578. for you to make

  1579. you right with him

1580. when you put your faith

  1581. and trust in him

1582. and there's no better time

1583. than today to do that.

  1584. Call out to him

  1585. and ask that that

  1586. text of scripture

  1587. be the story

  1588. of your life.

1589. And for the rest of us,

1590. we're going to just pray

1591. that God would make us,

1592. that he would grip us

  1593. with this teaching

  1594. of what Jesus accomplishes

1595. for us on the cross.

  1596. Let's pray.

  1597. Father,

1598. I ask that you would

1599. pour out your Holy Spirit

  1600. upon those

1601. who have not yet come

1602. to a faith in Jesus.

1603. Pour out your Holy Spirit

  1604. upon them.

  1605. Father,

  1606. silence the devil

  1607. and whatever he's saying

  1608. about how it's going

  1609. to wreck their lives

1610. or screw up their lives.

  1611. Father,

1612. pour out your Holy Spirit

  1613. upon them

  1614. to bring them

1615. to a point of release

  1616. that they lay down

  1617. their weapons

  1618. and they lay down,

1619. they just open their arms

1620. and that they call out to you

  1621. that Jesus would be

  1622. their Savior.

  1623. Father,

1624. I ask that your Holy Spirit

  1625. would fall upon those

  1626. in that struggle

1627. and that wrestle right now.

  1628. Father,

  1629. for those of us

1630. who have been kept far from you

  1631. because we think

  1632. we need an experience

1633. or we think that we need

1634. to prove that we're really

  1635. spiritual

  1636. and that we're elect,

  1637. Father,

1638. we ask that you would

  1639. silence the evil one

  1640. in those things

1641. and that you would help

  1642. people like that

  1643. turn their hearts

  1644. to Jesus

1645. and put their arms out

1646. and trust that you do

  1647. all that's needed

  1648. to make them right

  1649. with you.

  1650. And Father,

  1651. for all of us

  1652. who are here,

1653. help us to be gripped

  1654. with the gospel.

1655. Pour out your Holy Spirit

  1656. upon us

  1657. and make us disciples

  1658. of Jesus

  1659. gripped by the gospel

  1660. who are living

  1661. for your glory.

  1662. And this we ask

  1663. in Jesus' name.

  1664. Amen.

  1665. Amen.
