  1. Father, you know how it is to trust even people that we know very well, and we know that they're trustworthy.

  2. And Father, you know how hard it can be for us to trust people, even trustworthy people.

  3. And Father, you know how many times people have let us down, and we thought we could trust them,

  4. but Father, we discovered we couldn't trust them.

  5. Father, you know how many of us carry unforgiveness and wounds from people who have broken promises,

  6. and just hurt us, and not been trustworthy.

  7. And so, Father, you can see into our hearts as to how hard it is for us to trust you, you who is invisible,

  8. and how hard it is for us to trust your word,

  9. when your word seems to say things that our culture thinks doesn't make any sense.

  10. And Father, you know the inward struggle we have on how in many ways we don't want to acknowledge that we don't trust your word,

  11. yet still somehow we don't.

  12. Father, we thank you that you know us so perfectly.

  13. And we thank you that knowing us so perfectly, you don't turn your face away from us.

  14. You don't mock us or scorn us.

  15. You don't hate us.

  16. But knowing us so perfectly, you loved us perfectly as well,

  17. by sending your Son to die for us on the cross.

  18. And that you pour out your Holy Spirit, Father, on ordinary people like us,

  19. with the ordinary problems of trust, just like us.

  20. You pour out your Holy Spirit, and you speak to us through your word.

  21. So, Father, pour out your Holy Spirit upon us this morning,

  22. that we might trust your word,

  23. and that your word might come deep into who we are,

  24. and so bear fruit for you that brings glory to you.

  25. And all this we ask in the name of Jesus, your Son, and our Savior.

  26. Amen.

  27. Please be seated.

  28. So, I don't know how many of you were able to follow Helen when she was reading,

  29. but maybe some of you were thinking to yourself,

  30. did the Bible, and you didn't have the Bible open yourself,

  31. and you might say to yourself,

  32. did Helen just read that the Bible says that this guy Adam,

  33. that when he did something wrong,

  34. it meant that I die because he did something wrong.

  35. Did I just hear Helen say that because somehow or another,

  36. I'm guilty of the thing that Adam did.

  37. Is that what I just heard Helen say?

  38. And some of you are thinking,

  39. George, if I heard that she said,

  40. like, come on, George, you're a university-educated guy,

  41. and how on earth could you possibly believe that?

  42. That just seems a bit kooky,

  43. and it seems really unfair.

  44. So, George, is it saying that somehow or another,

  45. when Adam sinned, we're responsible,

  46. as well,

  47. or is it just saying that Adam's just sort of like an example of somebody who does bad things?

  48. Which, you know what, we can sort of understand.

  49. We all have examples of people who do bad things.

  50. So, we're going to look at that question, okay?

  51. So, get your Bibles out.

  52. It can be very, very helpful.

  53. So, you're not just taking my word for it,

  54. but you're actually seeing what the Bible says,

  55. and it's Romans chapter 5, verses 12 and following.

    Romans 5:12

  56. We're going to look at it.

  57. And before I start reading this verse,

  58. I'm just going to say one thing,

  59. and I should have said this several weeks ago,

  60. and actually, I've been meaning to do this for several years.

  61. If we had a service of a different type,

  62. especially after certain sermons,

  63. I would have a Q&A time after the service where you could ask me questions.

  64. And it just sort of doesn't really fit with the way we do things here.

  65. So, I'm not going to discuss,

  66. I'm going to talk as if Adam was a real person,

  67. and I'm not going to try to explain that or anything.

  68. I'm not going to do that right now.

  69. But what I, I don't know, Shirley, I think, is doing coffee or the nursery

  70. or something really helpful and important.

  71. But I'm going to ask Shirley to set up a time within a month.

  72. I don't know if it will be like a Saturday late morning

  73. or maybe a Monday evening,

  74. where anybody who wants can come,

  75. and we'll have some refreshments, some muffins or something like that.

  76. And we'll talk a little bit about the historical Adam.

  77. And I'm going to maybe try to do that.

  78. And if you ever come to a, I'll try to,

  79. and you can send me a question or something like that.

  80. Send me an email if you think it would be a good time to do it.

  81. You know, I probably should have done it a few weeks ago

  82. when we talked about homosexuality.

  83. And, you know, in another couple of weeks,

  84. you know, we're going to talk about, you know,

  85. how can the potter, you know, God can do whatever we want with this.

  86. Does the clay have any right to say to the potter,

  87. don't do this to me?

  88. So there's some hard texts.

  89. And sometimes it's maybe just too hard to deal with in a sermon.

  90. It's maybe better to do it over, you know, coffee or hot chocolate

  91. or Coke or something like that and some snacks.

  92. So I'm going to try to set up a time within a month.

  93. And I'll try to, we can talk about the historical Adam.

  94. So just so you know.

  95. But for now, we're going to talk,

  96. I'm going to talk as if Adam is a real person who really lived.

  97. And is the Bible here saying that this real person who really lived

  98. thousands and thousands of years ago,

  99. that when he did something, in some way,

  100. when he did it, you and I did it.

  101. And when he did it, that's why we die.

  102. Is that what the Bible is actually saying?

  103. So let's listen.

  104. Chapter 5, verse 12.

  105. And it begins like this.

  106. Sorry, just so you know what we were talking about yesterday,

  107. because it begins with therefore.

  108. So in the flow of the book, what Paul had just been talking about

  109. was this idea that it's a very, very powerful series of ideas,

  110. because sometimes we might think that if we're,

  111. that it's a series of ideas to help us to understand

  112. that when Jesus died on the cross for us,

  113. he died on the cross for people that he knew were bad people,

  114. and that in fact were his enemies.

  115. And in fact, the 511 sort of ends with this idea,

  116. if Jesus died for us when we were his enemy,

  117. now that he's alive,

  118. just imagine how much you're going to be blessed.

  119. And that's now where verse 12 comes in.

  120. Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man,

  121. and death through sin,

  122. and so death spread to all men,

  123. and here it means men and women,

  124. because all sinned.

  125. And then most of your Bibles are probably a hyphen.

  126. Just a bit of an aside, I'm not going to dodge this.

  127. You know, I mentioned to you several weeks ago,

  128. and I've said it in other times as well,

  129. that the Bible's witness about itself

  130. is that it's actually God speaking.

  131. And it's really important for us to understand something about that,

  132. is that doesn't mean that Christians are claiming

  133. that the Bible is perfect literature,

  134. that we should all aspire to write like the Bible writes.

  135. In fact, it's very, very interesting.

  136. In the time that the Bible was written,

  137. there were two different types of Greek

  138. that was the common language.

  139. There was the educated Greek, or formal Greek,

  140. that to our ears would sound a little bit

  141. as if people talked in King James Version English all the time.

  142. And there was street Greek,

  143. the type of Greek that carpenters and farmers

  144. and tanners and soldiers talked.

  145. And the Bible's written in street Greek,

  146. not good Greek.

  147. And here we see Paul actually doesn't complete his sentence.

  148. In other words, if he was writing this for a university paper,

  149. and the professor actually marked grammar,

  150. that he or she would put a little circle there and say,

  151. complete your sentences.

  152. You're not going to get an A plus

  153. if you don't complete your sentences.

  154. You've just dropped a mark.

  155. You're now looking at maybe at the best an A,

  156. maybe even an A minus, Paul.

  157. You missed ending the sentence properly.

  158. It's a very important thing to notice,

  159. is that Christians don't claim

  160. that the Bible is perfect literature.

  161. We just claim that when we read each word of the Bible,

  162. and the Bible as a whole,

  163. we're reading the words that God wanted to have spoken.

  164. If he doesn't want to have perfect grammar,

  165. take it up with him.

  166. I don't know, you know.

  167. So what did,

  168. that was just a bit of an aside.

  169. I like pointing those things out.

  170. You know, I'm sorry,

  171. just, oh gosh, I shouldn't do this.

  172. Two things.

  173. There's two reasons why I point this out.

  174. It's because our friends who are Muslims

  175. believe that the Koran

  176. is the most perfect book ever written.

  177. And it's easy for Christians

  178. to try to think the same thing about the Bible,

  179. but that's not what the Bible says about itself.

  180. And the other thing is that

  181. there's always been a bit of a,

  182. especially for Anglicans,

  183. this sense that speaking ordinary English

  184. isn't good enough.

  185. That we should be speaking special English

  186. with special accents.

  187. Some of you have maybe heard ministers

  188. who have what's called,

  189. I call it pulpit puberty.

  190. They speak one way when they're normal,

  191. but when they're up at the pulpit,

  192. they start speaking with deeper voices

  193. or they start speaking with a fake English accent

  194. or something like that.

  195. You know, in other words,

  196. and it's like puberty, right?

  197. Like for a guy going through puberty

  198. and all of a sudden,

  199. you know, their voices is going up and down, right?

  200. So it's a very common temptation

  201. for Christians to think that somehow or another,

  202. that their English,

  203. when it comes to God,

  204. should be somehow special.

  205. God just wants you to pour out his heart to him.

  206. He's not up there like a professor

  207. making sure you're going to get an A plus

  208. in speaking, you know, diction to him.

  209. Just pour out your heart.

  210. He poured out his heart to us.

  211. Every word is his,

  212. and I think he made it not perfect on purpose

  213. so we wouldn't think we have to speak perfectly

  214. or a certain way to him.

  215. So, sorry, that was a bit of an aside.

  216. Probably an important aside.

  217. Maybe for some of you that was the exact,

  218. maybe that was one of those God asides.

  219. Okay, back to this.

  220. Okay, here's the bad news.

  221. Well, it's not bad news.

  222. You're going to see in a moment,

  223. as the more I thought about it all week,

  224. I've come to believe that this is the most spectacular news imaginable.

  225. But it was a bit of a shock to me at first this week

  226. to realize that, in fact,

  227. the Bible is saying exactly what some of you might be worried that it's saying.

  228. It is saying that when Adam sinned,

  229. I sinned, you sinned,

  230. and all of the little babies,

  231. and all of the little babies,

  232. I can't remember which side of the building they're being looked after,

  233. all those cute little babies,

  234. when Adam sinned,

  235. each person, each human being is somehow in Adam

  236. or involved with Adam,

  237. and his sin was as if you and I sinned personally.

  238. That's exactly what the Bible's teaching right here.

  239. It's actually even clearer in the original language than it is in English.

  240. For instance, in verse 12,

  241. therefore just as sin came into the world through one man,

  242. and death through sin,

  243. and so death spread to all human beings,

  244. all men,

  245. because all sinned.

  246. It's actually more literal to translate the because as in whom,

  247. but it's terrible grammar.

  248. But it's actually trying to emphasize that somehow or another,

  249. every human being is in Adam.

  250. And so now some of you are saying,

  251. wow, that's a hard idea, George.

  252. In fact, I don't know, George,

  253. what do you think about that?

  254. So I'll tell you.

  255. On Tuesday afternoon, after my run,

  256. because I've been thinking about this a lot,

  257. I try to work on the sermon every day of the week,

  258. at least a little bit.

  259. And you know what?

  260. I came to the conclusion on Tuesday

  261. that I was just going to trust God on this one.

  262. I'm just going to trust God on this one.

  263. This is a profoundly non-Canadian,

  264. non-Western,

  265. non-first world idea

  266. that we find as,

  267. I'm going to explain in a moment why we're mistaken about this,

  268. but we say it's completely and utterly unscientific,

  269. and maybe even a completely abhorrent idea.

  270. And at the end of the day,

  271. at the end on Tuesday,

  272. before I thought about it more,

  273. I was going to say,

  274. you know what?

  275. I'm just going to believe God on this one.

  276. I'm just going to trust him.

  277. And some of you might say,

  278. well, gosh, George,

  279. that's sort of very anti-intellectual.

  280. It's not anti-intellectual at all.

  281. It's not anti-intellectual.

  282. In the same way that, you know,

  283. I've been married to Louise for 34 years,

  284. and, you know,

  285. like me,

  286. she's not a perfect person,

  287. but I,

  288. she's a really good person,

  289. and I trust her.

  290. I trust her.

  291. And I,

  292. and,

  293. and 34 years of marriage,

  294. and I,

  295. I knew her for four or five years before that,

  296. I,

  297. I have a lot of ground.

  298. I have a lot of experience to trust her.

  299. And so,

  300. if she called me up and asked me to do something,

  301. I,

  302. that at first,

  303. and then I said,

  304. no, Louise,

  305. you have to explain it to me.

  306. She said,

  307. no, just,

  308. you just have to do this.

  309. Just trust me.

  310. I,

  311. I,

  312. I,

  313. I hope I would trust her.

  314. And that's not being anti-intellectual.

  315. And,

  316. you know,

  317. so for me,

  318. it was as if God spoke to me in the early part of the week.

  319. And this might not mean anything to you,

  320. but it really meant a lot.

  321. It was as if God spoke to me,

  322. and I'm not a very mystical person.

  323. And,

  324. you know,

  325. I just thought about it.

  326. I,

  327. I,

  328. the more I,

  329. I study the Bible,

  330. the wiser I think it is.

  331. The more I've looked into things like the historical basis of the Christian faith,

  332. in terms of how the documents were written and transmitted,

  333. and,

  334. and the apostolic witness,

  335. and the integrity of scholars,

  336. the more I trust the Bible,

  337. and the more I look into Jesus and his resurrection,

  338. the more I believe that he really rose from the dead.

  339. And the more I think about how the Christian worldview makes sense of human experience,

  340. the more I believe and trust and accept the Bible.

  341. So why wouldn't I just trust God on this one?

  342. And if I trust God on this one,

  343. and now I look at the world,

  344. in fact,

  345. as I started to do that throughout the week,

  346. the more and more and more I thought it was,

  347. this was actually a very,

  348. very,

  349. that this is something that Canada needs,

  350. and that Canadian Christians need,

  351. and that in some ways,

  352. I have been lapsed black in my ministry upon not maybe talking about this more,

  353. that it's actually a very profound and deeply needed idea.

  354. The more I thought about it,

  355. the wiser I thought it became.

  356. That's going to maybe surprise you.

  357. George,

  358. the more you thought about it,

  359. the more you,

  360. once you just trusted that this is true,

  361. that you're just going to trust God that this is true,

  362. that when Adam actually did something wrong,

  363. whatever it was,

  364. he ate of the fruit of the tree that God told him not to do,

  365. that somehow or another,

  366. because of that,

  367. sin came into the world,

  368. and death came into the world,

  369. and every human being,

  370. actually,

  371. it's as if they ate the apple at the same time,

  372. or whatever it was,

  373. banana,

  374. mango,

  375. whatever it was,

  376. that we all ate that fruit at the same time.

  377. You believe that's a,

  378. how,

  379. here's the thing,

  380. here's the first thing about this.

  381. Some of you,

  382. hopefully all of you know that this past weekend,

  383. there was an apologetics conference,

  384. and the theme of the conference was being human,

  385. and we had a biochemist,

  386. and a doctor,

  387. and a philosopher,

  388. and they came and talked about what it means to be human.

  389. And at one of the breaks,

  390. I went to one of my favorite Starbucks,

  391. and there was a barista there

  392. that I've talked to quite a few times,

  393. and she knows that I'm a pastor,

  394. and she said,

  395. what are you doing today, George?

  396. And I said,

  397. I'm going to a conference on being human.

  398. And it was really funny.

  399. She was,

  400. you know,

  401. pouring,

  402. I'm behind her,

  403. and she's pouring my coffee,

  404. and as soon as I said,

  405. I went to a conference being human,

  406. and she instantly turned around and looked at me.

  407. Like,

  408. she stopped doing what she did.

  409. She instantly turned around and looked at me.

  410. And she said,

  411. well,

  412. what have you concluded?

  413. Which I wasn't expecting.

  414. And so,

  415. I very quickly thought,

  416. well,

  417. I think we're concluding

  418. that,

  419. you know,

  420. a human,

  421. to be a human

  422. is a mystery,

  423. a combination of things we know

  424. and mystery.

  425. And she said,

  426. well,

  427. I agree with that.

  428. That's what I would say.

  429. So,

  430. you know,

  431. here's the thing.

  432. This idea that we're all in Adam,

  433. and at first we say,

  434. well,

  435. that's just wrong,

  436. that's just stupid.

  437. Well,

  438. why do we say that?

  439. Why do we say that?

  440. First of all,

  441. it's not unscientific.

  442. Science has nothing to say about that at all.

  443. Well,

  444. in terms of the historical Adam,

  445. but we can talk about that.

  446. I said,

  447. well,

  448. that's an off-ramp thing.

  449. But this idea,

  450. here's the thing.

  451. If I was to say,

  452. if some of you were to say to me

  453. that there's a thousand-story office building in Ottawa,

  454. I would say to you,

  455. you don't know what you're talking about.

  456. I know Ottawa,

  457. and I know there's no thousand-story building in Ottawa.

  458. You don't know what you're talking about.

  459. I know Ottawa.

  460. I've lived here for quite a few years.

  461. It's not there.

  462. Not here.

  463. You don't know what you're talking about.

  464. You're going against all of the evidence.

  465. Just don't know what you're talking about.

  466. If somebody was to say to me

  467. that the national food,

  468. the favorite food of Irish people,

  469. is fried pussycat,

  470. I would say,

  471. I'm Irish.

  472. Both of my parents are from Ireland.

  473. All of my relatives are from Ireland.

  474. I've been to Ireland,

  475. and I know lots of Irish people,

  476. and you're wrong.

  477. It isn't what Irish people love to eat,

  478. fried pussycat.

  479. Irish people don't eat cats.

  480. And I would just say,

  481. you don't know what you're talking about.

  482. But do we know what human beings are?

  483. Do we really know what human beings are?

  484. Wouldn't you all,

  485. wouldn't most people,

  486. other than the most extreme type of scientist types,

  487. naturalists,

  488. wouldn't you all acknowledge

  489. that to be a human being is a mystery?

  490. I mean,

  491. there's things,

  492. obviously,

  493. we know,

  494. you know,

  495. we know that,

  496. you know,

  497. we know different things about our physiology,

  498. and,

  499. and we know,

  500. you know,

  501. we know,

  502. you know,

  503. doctors have a bit of an idea

  504. about what a healthy body looks like

  505. as opposed to a sick body,

  506. and,

  507. and we,

  508. we know,

  509. obviously,

  510. we know things about human beings,

  511. but at the same time,

  512. isn't it the case that

  513. there's huge parts about what it means to be a human

  514. that's a complete and utter mystery?

  515. Like,

  516. human beings are deep,

  517. and they have layers.

  518. One of the things you discover

  519. about being in a relationship

  520. with a person

  521. is that

  522. they're not simple.

  523. That

  524. things that happened to them

  525. in their past

  526. that you don't even know about

  527. have this profound effect on,

  528. on you.

  529. And,

  530. and for some of us,

  531. as we've gotten a little bit older,

  532. I mean,

  533. it's,

  534. you know,

  535. it's a bit different maybe

  536. when you're just barreling through life

  537. with a whole pile of,

  538. you know,

  539. in my case,

  540. because I,

  541. I'm a guy,

  542. a whole pile of testosterone

  543. and a whole pile of adrenaline,

  544. and you just sort of barge through life.

  545. You just sort of gallop through life,

  546. when you're 20 or 21,

  547. but you get a little bit older,

  548. and all of a sudden,

  549. you realize that something

  550. that happened to you

  551. when you were,

  552. you were six,

  553. or something that happened to you

  554. when you were five,

  555. or something that happened to you

  556. when you were 30,

  557. or something that happened to you

  558. 20 years ago,

  559. or 30 years,

  560. or 40 years ago,

  561. that all of a sudden,

  562. you realize that that's something

  563. that's,

  564. that's formed you,

  565. and you didn't even know it.

  566. I mean,

  567. it's,

  568. it's always had a,

  569. a forming effect on you.

  570. You didn't even know it.

  571. You don't even know the depths

  572. of yourself.

  573. And,

  574. and how is it,

  575. like,

  576. what is it,

  577. you know,

  578. we don't really understand,

  579. in a sense,

  580. how consciousness works.

  581. We all have consciousness.

  582. We don't understand that,

  583. really.

  584. How do we understand

  585. how sometimes

  586. we just know something?

  587. How do we understand,

  588. how do we figure out

  589. why it is that somebody

  590. can just pick up

  591. a musical instrument,

  592. and all of a sudden,

  593. a melody comes?

  594. Like,

  595. I wish I could do that.

  596. I've never had that experience,

  597. but I,

  598. how is it that

  599. that happens to people?

  600. How is it that somebody,

  601. they can just say something,

  602. and it's the exact right thing?

  603. Why is it

  604. that sometimes

  605. you're sitting there,

  606. and you feel somebody's eyes

  607. on you,

  608. and you turn around,

  609. and they are looking at you?

  610. How is it that we know that?

  611. And if there's so much

  612. about being a human being

  613. that we don't know,

  614. why is it that we would

  615. reject the idea

  616. that somehow or another,

  617. that in Adam,

  618. we sinned?

  619. We can't reject that

  620. because we know

  621. human beings so well,

  622. as we know that

  623. there's no thousand-story

  624. building in the city of Ottawa.

  625. Now,

  626. I know that if you're here

  627. as a guest,

  628. and you're an atheist,

  629. or a Muslim,

  630. or a Buddhist,

  631. you don't have to accept

  632. that just because the Bible

  633. says that it's true.

  634. That's fine.

  635. I understand that.

  636. That's a longer conversation,

  637. but I still think

  638. that if you think about it,

  639. this is part of the

  640. unbelievable power

  641. of the Christian understanding

  642. of the person,

  643. the depth of what it means

  644. to be a person.

  645. And it explains so much,

  646. I think,

  647. because, you know,

  648. science can't explain

  649. why it is that there's

  650. no perfect human being.

  651. Like, you can't look

  652. at human DNA

  653. and say,

  654. because of DNA,

  655. we know that this human being

  656. will someday tell a lie.

  657. You can't discover that

  658. from DNA.

  659. Why?

  660. Why is it that human beings,

  661. that it's very rare

  662. to meet a person

  663. who's almost completely

  664. and utterly evil,

  665. and it's very rare

  666. to meet a person

  667. who's almost completely

  668. and utterly perfectly

  669. morally good.

  670. Why is it that human beings

  671. do bad things?

  672. Why is it that something

  673. about that's wrong

  674. touches just about

  675. every single thing,

  676. if not every single thing

  677. that human beings do?

  678. Why is that the case?

  679. But why is it at the same time

  680. that human beings

  681. do do good things?

  682. And why is it at the same time

  683. that not only that human beings

  684. do good things,

  685. but that they can appreciate beauty

  686. and they can appreciate music?

  687. Like, why is that,

  688. that there's this complication

  689. within human beings?

  690. Well, maybe it's because

  691. we aren't just

  692. a separate individual,

  693. and it's as if, you know,

  694. there's an individual

  695. pot, a piece of dough made,

  696. and that's one pie,

  697. and then you take

  698. all new ingredients

  699. and make another pie,

  700. take all new ingredients

  701. and make another pie,

  702. and then, you know,

  703. you wouldn't expect

  704. all the pies

  705. to be exactly the same,

  706. especially if you're getting

  707. all new ingredients

  708. every time,

  709. but why is it that

  710. human beings aren't like that?

  711. Maybe it's because

  712. that in some way

  713. that we're all in Adam,

  714. and that when Adam fell,

  715. that that touched

  716. all of us.

  717. And why is it that

  718. human beings feel

  719. compassion for each other?

  720. There's three things

  721. that are going on right now.

  722. Every one of us

  723. probably feels

  724. some compassion

  725. and concern

  726. for what's going on in Paris.

  727. I've never been to Paris.

  728. And I'm not alone here

  729. in saying,

  730. I bet if you went out

  731. into the streets,

  732. unless there's people

  733. who've just in some

  734. drug-induced haze

  735. didn't even know

  736. there's anything going on,

  737. but if you tell them,

  738. they would have compassion.

  739. Two of the movies,

  740. one of the best-selling,

  741. one of the top movies

  742. right now

  743. is called Martian.

  744. The Martian,

  745. I think,

  746. or something,

  747. yeah,

  748. and at the heart of it

  749. is the entire planet,

  750. one of the aspects

  751. of the movie,

  752. is the entire planet

  753. having compassion

  754. and being concerned

  755. about one person

  756. left on the planet of Mars.

  757. The Chilean miners film,

  758. which just came

  759. in the movies,

  760. it's touching on the fact

  761. that that crisis

  762. in Chile,

  763. that many people

  764. were riveted by,

  765. why is it that we feel

  766. compassion for other

  767. human beings?

  768. Is it possible

  769. that it's because

  770. in a way that we

  771. don't think about,

  772. we're all in Adam?

  773. And that at some level

  774. we sense

  775. that there's this,

  776. not just individualism

  777. about us,

  778. but that there's something

  779. common about us.

  780. That there's something

  781. common.

  782. The biblical doctrine

  783. is that Adam

  784. is our covenant

  785. head.

  786. That Adam

  787. is the covenant

  788. head

  789. of the human race.

  790. And that in some ways

  791. his actions

  792. or failure

  793. to act

  794. does impact

  795. and touch

  796. and characterize

  797. all human beings.

  798. And we enter

  799. that covenant,

  800. so to speak,

  801. with Adam

  802. purely by birth,

  803. by the fact that

  804. human succession

  805. goes from

  806. the sperm

  807. and the ovum

  808. of a male

  809. and a female

  810. and they're put together

  811. and there's a new

  812. human life

  813. and that is how

  814. human life goes on

  815. and all of us

  816. are in that

  817. human covenant

  818. with Adam

  819. as our head

  820. just by biology.

  821. And that's what,

  822. but it's more than

  823. just biology

  824. because of this

  825. whole thing of sin.

  826. And it's a very

  827. rich and deep idea.

  828. Just one other thing

  829. because I have to

  830. move on with it.

  831. I think you've got

  832. the mystery

  833. and maybe the power

  834. of it.

  835. You know,

  836. I was thinking about

  837. it a lot this week.

  838. The more we grasp

  839. that Adam

  840. is our covenant

  841. head,

  842. then racism

  843. makes no sense.

  844. In fact,

  845. it's an offense.

  846. The more we

  847. grasp

  848. that we

  849. have a covenant

  850. head,

  851. the more

  852. that we would

  853. have a fear

  854. of people

  855. who are different

  856. than us,

  857. just because

  858. they're different

  859. doesn't make any

  860. sense.

  861. It would mean,

  862. it would undermine

  863. those who are

  864. transgendered

  865. or experience

  866. same-sex attraction

  867. as basing

  868. their identity

  869. in that

  870. if they understand

  871. and we understand

  872. with them

  873. that there's this

  874. one common

  875. human covenant

  876. with Adam

  877. as our head.

  878. It would undermine

  879. caste systems

  880. and class

  881. systems

  882. and sexism

  883. and racism

  884. if we all

  885. grew in this

  886. sense that there

  887. is just one

  888. covenant head

  889. of all human

  890. beings.

  891. At a very

  892. profound and

  893. deep level,

  894. it would make

  895. all of these

  896. things

  897. abhorrent

  898. and wrong.

  899. And it

  900. actually would

  901. build,

  902. it would make

  903. deeper sense

  904. why building

  905. bonds of affection

  906. in families

  907. and communities

  908. and across

  909. families and

  910. communities

  911. is not just

  912. some artificial

  913. command that

  914. God would

  915. rest on us

  916. but was

  917. actually part

  918. of the way

  919. that God

  920. created us

  921. that it's

  922. a sign

  923. of health

  924. when we

  925. have a desire

  926. for bonds

  927. of affection

  928. within communities

  929. and across

  930. economic barriers

  931. and racial

  932. barriers

  933. and educational

  934. levels

  935. and that

  936. compassion

  937. should be

  938. there.

  939. It's woven

  940. into our

  941. DNA.

  942. A.

  943. I probably

  944. lost my

  945. place in

  946. my notes.

  947. Here's the

  948. thing.

  949. The doctrine

  950. or the

  951. idea of

  952. human beings

  953. as part

  954. of a

  955. covenant

  956. that has

  957. a head

  958. does not

  959. offend

  960. science or

  961. reason.

  962. It offends

  963. individualism.

  964. that's what

  965. I would say.

  966. That's what

  967. I just

  968. tried to

  969. demonstrate.

  970. I don't

  971. think it

  972. offends

  973. it.

  974. You can't

  975. prove it

  976. from science

  977. or reason.

  978. It's one

  979. of those

  980. things that

  981. once you

  982. have

  983. revelation

  984. and then

  985. you look

  986. at and

  987. then you

  988. accept it

  989. and then

  990. you look

  991. at the

  992. world

  993. you see

  994. evidence

  995. for it.

  996. That it

  997. fits.

  998. That there's

  999. some sense

  1000. to it.

  1001. It's something

  1002. maybe bigger

  1003. than our minds

  1004. can get our

  1005. but there's a

  1006. sense to it

  1007. and there's a

  1008. fittedness to it.

  1009. So it doesn't

  1010. offend reason.

  1011. It doesn't

  1012. offend science.

  1013. It deeply

  1014. offends

  1015. our individualism

  1016. and it

  1017. deeply

  1018. offends

  1019. our selfishness

  1020. and it

  1021. deeply

  1022. offends

  1023. our desire

  1024. to choose

  1025. race,

  1026. our race

  1027. over another

  1028. or our

  1029. politics

  1030. over another

  1031. or anything

  1032. our tribe

  1033. or our clan

  1034. over another.

  1035. It's deeply

  1036. offensive

  1037. to that

  1038. but it's

  1039. not

  1040. offensive

  1041. to science

  1042. or reason.

  1043. And it's

  1044. also then

  1045. something about

  1046. you know

  1047. here's another

  1048. thing about

  1049. being human

  1050. is that

  1051. this text

  1052. here has

  1053. a profound

  1054. explanation

  1055. about the

  1056. meaning of

  1057. death.

  1058. I mean

  1059. how do we

  1060. understand death?

  1061. It's really

  1062. funny.

  1063. You know

  1064. when we

  1065. listen to

  1066. different people

  1067. speak

  1068. if you go

  1069. to university

  1070. and you're

  1071. listening to

  1072. different

  1073. political

  1074. ideologies

  1075. and different

  1076. you know

  1077. different

  1078. sciences

  1079. and different

  1080. explanations

  1081. different types

  1082. of anthropology

  1083. sociology

  1084. psychologies

  1085. when you go

  1086. and you

  1087. talk to

  1088. different

  1089. religions

  1090. it's amazing

  1091. how often

  1092. they completely

  1093. and utterly

  1094. ignore the

  1095. reality

  1096. and the

  1097. significance

  1098. of death.

  1099. Yet if there

  1100. is one

  1101. single thing

  1102. we know

  1103. is that

  1104. we will

  1105. all die.

  1106. and it's

  1107. something we

  1108. want to

  1109. avert our

  1110. eyes from

  1111. usually

  1112. for most

  1113. of our

  1114. life

  1115. but it's

  1116. there

  1117. and how

  1118. do different

  1119. systems of

  1120. thought account

  1121. for it?

  1122. Look here again

  1123. at verse 12

  1124. and then we'll

  1125. keep reading

  1126. down to verse 14

  1127. it's very

  1128. very powerful

  1129. and very

  1130. very wise

  1131. it says again

  1132. therefore just

  1133. as sin

  1134. came into

  1135. the world

  1136. through one

  1137. man

  1138. and death

  1139. through sin

  1140. and so

  1141. death

  1142. spread

  1143. to all

  1144. men

  1145. this case

  1146. meaning the

  1147. human race

  1148. because all

  1149. sinned

  1150. for sin

  1151. indeed was

  1152. in the world

  1153. before the

  1154. law was

  1155. given

  1156. but the

  1157. sin is not

  1158. counted where

  1159. there is no

  1160. law

  1161. yet death

  1162. reigned from

  1163. Adam to

  1164. Moses

  1165. even those

  1166. whose sinning

  1167. was not like

  1168. the transgression

  1169. of Adam

  1170. was a type

  1171. of the one

  1172. to come

  1173. it's a bit

  1174. complicated

  1175. here's the

  1176. thing

  1177. what the

  1178. bible is

  1179. saying is

  1180. that death

  1181. is a

  1182. symptom

  1183. we have a

  1184. I don't know

  1185. if we have

  1186. many doctors

  1187. in the

  1188. congregation

  1189. I know we

  1190. have at least

  1191. one guy here

  1192. who's in

  1193. med school

  1194. and they

  1195. understand the

  1196. difference between

  1197. you know

  1198. you're going

  1199. to the doctor

  1200. and you know

  1201. I have this

  1202. pain over here

  1203. I have this

  1204. lump or whatever

  1205. or you know

  1206. and you tell

  1207. the doctor

  1208. your symptoms

  1209. and then you

  1210. hope that

  1211. the doctor

  1212. and then he

  1213. or she

  1214. will ask you

  1215. a range of

  1216. questions

  1217. to see what

  1218. other things

  1219. are going on

  1220. and you might

  1221. not connect

  1222. this lump

  1223. to that mole

  1224. or you know

  1225. that something

  1226. going on in

  1227. your eye

  1228. to that thing

  1229. going on in

  1230. your toe

  1231. I don't know

  1232. if there's a

  1233. connection there

  1234. and I just

  1235. made it up

  1236. but they look

  1237. at your

  1238. different symptoms

  1239. and they're

  1240. trained at least

  1241. we hope to

  1242. observe

  1243. and they look

  1244. at your

  1245. different symptoms

  1246. and they make

  1247. a prognosis

  1248. they make an

  1249. analysis of

  1250. what's causing

  1251. it

  1252. and so what

  1253. the bible

  1254. is saying here

  1255. is that death

  1256. is a symptom

  1257. that on a

  1258. very very

  1259. fundamental

  1260. it fits at a

  1261. very very

  1262. fundamental level

  1263. with I think

  1264. the most common

  1265. human experience

  1266. which is that

  1267. at a fundamental

  1268. on a strictly

  1269. biological level

  1270. death is natural

  1271. but at a human

  1272. level nobody

  1273. experiences death

  1274. of a loved one

  1275. is natural

  1276. we all know

  1277. when it touches

  1278. us closely

  1279. that there's

  1280. something unnatural

  1281. about death

  1282. and what

  1283. there's a bit

  1284. of an ongoing

  1285. thing that's all

  1286. the way through

  1287. the book of

  1288. Romans

  1289. that we're not

  1290. going to talk

  1291. about that much

  1292. right now

  1293. but if you go

  1294. back to Romans

  1295. 2 or listen

  1296. to the sermon

  1297. that I did

  1298. on the first

  1299. part of Romans

  1300. 2

  1301. is that

  1302. Paul knows

  1303. that

  1304. what Paul is

  1305. just saying

  1306. is that

  1307. if you want

  1308. to think

  1309. that somehow

  1310. or another

  1311. when the Bible

  1312. comes it's

  1313. going to make

  1314. things better

  1315. when the law

  1316. comes it's

  1317. going to make

  1318. things better

  1319. I think Jewish

  1320. people had a saying

  1321. the more Torah

  1322. the better it is

  1323. I got that wrong

  1324. but it's something

  1325. like that

  1326. and Paul is going

  1327. to keep saying

  1328. no no no

  1329. that's not the

  1330. case

  1331. the Bible

  1332. God's law

  1333. isn't the solution

  1334. and so it's just

  1335. another one of

  1336. these things

  1337. that yeah

  1338. the Bible

  1339. is just going

  1340. to actually

  1341. make us more

  1342. aware of the

  1343. things that we've

  1344. done wrong

  1345. but the fact

  1346. of the matter

  1347. is there's always

  1348. been death

  1349. we only know

  1350. a history of

  1351. death

  1352. and therefore

  1353. there's always

  1354. been a history

  1355. of everyone

  1356. being in Adam

  1357. because death

  1358. is a symptom

  1359. of a deeper

  1360. problem

  1361. and the deeper

  1362. problem

  1363. is our

  1364. separation

  1365. from God

  1366. and once

  1367. we chose

  1368. to be like

  1369. God

  1370. ourself

  1371. so that we

  1372. could at first

  1373. look God

  1374. eye to eye

  1375. but then look

  1376. down our nose

  1377. at God

  1378. because that was

  1379. ultimately

  1380. the human desire

  1381. that we would

  1382. be able to

  1383. look down

  1384. our nose

  1385. from God

  1386. that we

  1387. fell

  1388. and our

  1389. communion

  1390. and relationship

  1391. with God

  1392. was broken

  1393. and death

  1394. is a symptom

  1395. of that

  1396. and that's

  1397. why we can

  1398. understand

  1399. that on one

  1400. hand there

  1401. is something

  1402. natural now

  1403. about death

  1404. because there's

  1405. human covenant

  1406. which we all

  1407. experience

  1408. is a covenant

  1409. all with a

  1410. covenant head

  1411. but at the

  1412. same time

  1413. that there is

  1414. something profoundly

  1415. unnatural about it

  1416. but actually

  1417. and I'm not

  1418. going to talk

  1419. about this

  1420. much this week

  1421. I'm going to

  1422. talk about

  1423. in a couple

  1424. of weeks

  1425. in some ways

  1426. there's actually

  1427. some hope

  1428. in it

  1429. just as

  1430. if you come

  1431. to the doctor

  1432. if you recognize

  1433. that this lump

  1434. over here

  1435. isn't natural

  1436. you can go

  1437. to the doctor

  1438. and hopefully

  1439. the doctor

  1440. can say

  1441. okay this is

  1442. actually really

  1443. serious but we

  1444. caught it in time

  1445. and I can make

  1446. you better

  1447. and so that when

  1448. we recognize

  1449. that death

  1450. is a symptom

  1451. there is the hope

  1452. that

  1453. and in fact

  1454. this goes

  1455. with the whole

  1456. bible thing

  1457. is the bible

  1458. might be some

  1459. type of medicine

  1460. but it's not

  1461. health

  1462. it's not a cure

  1463. that the bible

  1464. is regularly

  1465. going to make us

  1466. realize

  1467. that we don't

  1468. need more

  1469. advice

  1470. that we need

  1471. a rescue

  1472. and the bible

  1473. and moral

  1474. instruction

  1475. will make us

  1476. aware that

  1477. only god

  1478. can rescue

  1479. not the state

  1480. not the tribe

  1481. not the clan

  1482. not affirming

  1483. our sexuality

  1484. not political

  1485. ideology

  1486. that only god

  1487. can rescue

  1488. and that we

  1489. can cry out

  1490. and call out

  1491. to him

  1492. that he would

  1493. rescue us

  1494. so death

  1495. follows

  1496. sin

  1497. death

  1498. is a symptom

  1499. of sin

  1500. death

  1501. follows

  1502. sin

  1503. death

  1504. is a symptom

  1505. symptom

  1506. of sin

  1507. we don't

  1508. need more

  1509. information

  1510. we need

  1511. rescue

  1512. rescue from

  1513. god

  1514. we don't

  1515. need more

  1516. information

  1517. about rules

  1518. take these

  1519. vitamins

  1520. memorize these

  1521. bible verses

  1522. do 15

  1523. jumping jacks

  1524. 25 burpees

  1525. we don't

  1526. need more

  1527. rules

  1528. we need

  1529. rescue

  1530. not information

  1531. now some

  1532. people might

  1533. say

  1534. george

  1535. okay

  1536. now i can

  1537. maybe see

  1538. that there's

  1539. something powerful

  1540. about this

  1541. but it still

  1542. just doesn't

  1543. seem fair

  1544. and it still

  1545. doesn't seem

  1546. just

  1547. and surely

  1548. there's something

  1549. wrong

  1550. that adam

  1551. did this

  1552. and i didn't

  1553. choose him

  1554. and that just

  1555. doesn't seem

  1556. fair to me

  1557. it doesn't

  1558. seem just

  1559. and

  1560. we actually

  1561. see that

  1562. there

  1563. that there's

  1564. something to

  1565. this thing

  1566. but actually

  1567. considering the

  1568. question of

  1569. fairness

  1570. and justice

  1571. helps us to

  1572. understand the

  1573. rest of chapter

  1574. five actually

  1575. when we ask

  1576. this question

  1577. because what

  1578. the rest of

  1579. chapter five

  1580. is going to

  1581. tell us

  1582. is that we

  1583. need more

  1584. than justice

  1585. we need

  1586. mercy

  1587. and if we

  1588. are offered

  1589. mercy without

  1590. justice

  1591. that's actually

  1592. just god

  1593. showing favoritism

  1594. it's just god

  1595. picking favorites

  1596. it's just like

  1597. irish people

  1598. thinking that i'm

  1599. just gonna let all

  1600. the irish people

  1601. have the slack

  1602. and i don't know

  1603. the english people

  1604. oppressed us for a

  1605. long time so

  1606. you know

  1607. sucks to be english

  1608. but we like polish

  1609. people so i don't

  1610. know you know

  1611. we'll let poli

  1612. like if that's

  1613. that's not justice

  1614. and that's not

  1615. really mercy

  1616. that's just

  1617. favoritism

  1618. that's just

  1619. power politics

  1620. that's and

  1621. and so that

  1622. what what the

  1623. bible is going

  1624. to now go on

  1625. and say is

  1626. that in fact

  1627. yes we do

  1628. understand at a

  1629. fundamental level

  1630. we need justice

  1631. we want justice

  1632. but at the same

  1633. time if all we

  1634. have is justice

  1635. we are doomed

  1636. and we need

  1637. something more

  1638. than justice

  1639. that doesn't

  1640. transgress justice

  1641. or contradict

  1642. justice

  1643. or undermine

  1644. blind justice

  1645. or blind

  1646. justice

  1647. and make it

  1648. injustice

  1649. that we need

  1650. somehow to have

  1651. justice

  1652. and we need to

  1653. have at the same

  1654. time that which is

  1655. greater than justice

  1656. but coherent with

  1657. justice

  1658. we need mercy

  1659. and we need

  1660. grace

  1661. and that's exactly

  1662. what the gospel

  1663. gives us

  1664. because at the

  1665. first very thing

  1666. it's going to say

  1667. as as as Paul's

  1668. going to go through

  1669. this he's going to

  1670. outline what God

  1671. has done

  1672. he's going to say

1673. at the end of the

  1674. day when you think

  1675. about all the things

  1676. that God has done

  1677. what you can know

  1678. and you can have

  1679. a great confidence

  1680. in is that God

  1681. picked a better

  1682. representative for

  1683. you than you

  1684. would pick for

  1685. yourself

  1686. that God

  1687. when he picked

  1688. Adam

  1689. he knows everything

  1690. he knew every human

  1691. being that was going

  1692. to follow and he

  1693. picked the best

  1694. person you could

  1695. possibly pick

  1696. and when that

  1697. didn't work

  1698. well what happened

  1699. let's look

  1700. verse

  1701. we'll read verse

  1702. 14 again

  1703. yet death

  1704. reigned from

  1705. Adam to

  1706. Moses

  1707. even over

  1708. those whose

  1709. sinning was

  1710. not like the

  1711. transgression of

  1712. Adam who was

  1713. a type

  1714. of the one

  1715. to come

  1716. and Paul's

  1717. original hearers

  1718. they would have

  1719. seen type

  1720. type

  1721. has an

  1722. archetype

  1723. and

  1724. he is saying

  1725. when he says

  1726. that Adam

  1727. is a type

  1728. that even

  1729. though he's

  1730. the covenant

  1731. head

  1732. he is saying

  1733. that God

  1734. will provide

  1735. a true

  1736. and greater

  1737. Adam

  1738. that God

  1739. will provide

  1740. a true

  1741. and greater

  1742. Adam

  1743. Adam is a

  1744. type

  1745. those were some

  1746. philosophical

  1747. training

  1748. God will provide

  1749. the archetype

  1750. the true

  1751. and greater

  1752. Adam

  1753. and what

  1754. will God

  1755. do

  1756. through this

  1757. second

  1758. covenant

  1759. head

  1760. who is a

  1761. true

  1762. and greater

  1763. Adam

  1764. see God

  1765. will now

  1766. given that he's

  1767. made the human

  1768. race

  1769. that the human

  1770. race can have

  1771. a covenant

  1772. head

  1773. God is going

  1774. to provide

  1775. an option

  1776. for another

  1777. covenant

  1778. head

  1779. that we don't

  1780. enter into

  1781. by biology

  1782. but we

  1783. enter into

  1784. with empty

  1785. hands

  1786. by faith

  1787. and what's

  1788. going to be

  1789. characteristic

  1790. of this

  1791. true

  1792. and greater

  1793. Adam

  1794. that's what

  1795. Paul outlines

  1796. here in

  1797. verse 15

  1798. the thing

  1799. which is

  1800. going to

  1801. first

  1802. characterize

  1803. this true

  1804. and greater

  1805. Adam

  1806. is to

  1807. understand

  1808. it as a

  1809. free

  1810. gift

  1811. but the

  1812. free gift

  1813. is not like

  1814. the trespass

  1815. that's what

  1816. Adam did

  1817. our covenant

  1818. head

  1819. for if

  1820. many died

  1821. through one

  1822. man's

  1823. trespass

  1824. much more

  1825. have the

  1826. grace of

  1827. God

  1828. and the

  1829. free gift

  1830. by the

  1831. grace

  1832. of that

  1833. one man

  1834. Jesus

  1835. Christ

  1836. abounded

  1837. for many

  1838. super

  1839. abounded

  1840. for many

  1841. that just

  1842. as

  1843. Jesus

  1844. is this

  1845. new

  1846. covenant

  1847. head

  1848. and what's

  1849. going to

  1850. cover

  1851. characterize

  1852. him

  1853. is that

  1854. it's

  1855. understood

  1856. as a

  1857. free

  1858. gift

  1859. it's

  1860. super

  1861. abounding

  1862. grace

  1863. coherent

  1864. and consistent

  1865. with

  1866. justice

  1867. that's

  1868. going to

  1869. characterize

  1870. this

  1871. second

  1872. covenant

  1873. head

  1874. is

  1875. abounding

  1876. grace

  1877. verse

  1878. 16

  1879. and the

  1880. free

  1881. gift

  1882. that's

  1883. this

  1884. new

  1885. covenant

  1886. head

  1887. is not

  1888. like the

  1889. result

  1890. of that

  1891. one

  1892. man's

  1893. sin

  1894. for the

  1895. judgment

  1896. following

  1897. one

  1898. trespass

  1899. brought

  1900. condemnation

  1901. in other

  2307. he

  2308. says

  2309. there's

  2310. many

  2329. and

  2330. it's

  2331. not

  2332. so

  2333. much

  2334. that

  2335. Adam

  2336. eats

  2337. the

  2338. God

  2339. knows

  2340. God

  2341. made

  2342. us

  2343. to

  2345. but

  2346. Adam

  2347. doesn't

  2349. want

  2350. to

  2351. eat

  2352. of

  2353. that

  2356. it's

  2357. because

  2358. Adam

  2359. makes

  2360. the

  2361. decision

  2362. I

  2363. want

  2366. God

  2367. I

  2368. want

  2369. to

  2372. I

  2373. want

  2377. I

  2378. want

  2379. to

  2381. myself

  2382. I

  2383. want

  2384. to

  2387. I

  2388. want

  2394. I

  2395. want

  2396. to

  2397. make

  2398. my

  2399. order

  2400. the

  2402. that

  2403. the

  2408. I

  2409. don't

  2424. garden

  2425. I

  2710. and

  2711. our

  2712. sin

  2713. and

  2714. Jesus

  2715. is

  2716. obedient

  2717. and

  2718. so

  2719. he

  2720. dies

  2721. upon

  2722. the

  2723. tree

  2724. the

  2725. second

  2726. tree

  2727. the

  2728. true

  2729. and

  2730. greater

  2731. Adam

  2732. and

  2733. up

  2734. until

  2735. now

  2736. all

  2737. the

  2738. way

  2739. through

  2740. the

  2741. book

  2742. of

  2743. Romans

  2744. all

  2745. of

  2746. the

  2747. images

  2748. of

  2749. salvation

  2750. have

  2751. been

  2752. in a

  2753. sense

  2754. negative

  2755. that

  2756. on

  2757. the

  2758. cross

  2759. you

  2760. could

  2761. imagine

  2762. it's

  2763. as if

  2764. above

  2765. right up

  2766. there

  2767. all

  2768. of the

  2769. things

  2770. all

  2771. of the

  2772. things

  2773. that

  2774. God

  2775. has

  2776. against

  2777. you

  2778. and

  2779. everybody

  2780. that

  2781. you

  2782. know

  2783. has

  2784. against

  2785. you

  2786. and

  2787. it's

  2788. as if

  2789. all

  2790. the

  2791. charges

  2792. are

  2793. up

  2794. there

  2795. and

  2796. Jesus

  2797. dies

  2798. upon

  2799. the

  2800. cross

  2801. and

  2802. those

  2803. are

  2804. all

  2805. taken

  2806. away

  2807. he

  2808. takes

  2809. God's

  2810. judgment

  2811. or

  2812. punishment

  2813. for

  2814. but

  2815. what

  2816. Romans

  2817. 5

  2818. through

  2819. this

  2820. image

  2821. of

  2822. a

  2823. second

  2824. Adam

  2825. and

  2826. a

  2827. second

  2828. covenant

  2829. head

  2830. is

  2831. trying

  2832. to

  2833. get

  2834. before

  2835. us

  2836. is

  2837. that

  2838. what

  2839. Jesus

  2840. accomplishes

  2841. for us

  2842. on the

  2843. cross

  2844. is

  2845. not

  2846. just

  2847. negative

  2848. but

  2849. it's

  2850. positive

  2851. just

  2852. as

  2853. in

  2854. some

  2855. way

  2856. when

  2857. I

  2858. when

  2859. Adam

  2860. acted

  2861. in

  2862. rebellion

  2863. I

  2864. acted

  2865. in

  2866. rebellion

  2867. against

  2868. God

  2869. in

  2870. some

  2871. way

  2872. when

  2873. I

  2874. put

  2875. my

  2876. faith

  2877. and

  2878. trust

  2879. in

  2880. Jesus

  2881. as

  2882. my

  2883. new

  2884. covenant

  2885. head

  2886. his

  2887. perfect

  2888. life

  2889. of

  2890. obedience

  2891. becomes

  2892. mine

  2893. his

  2894. life

  2895. eternal

  2896. life

  2897. becomes

  2898. mine

  2899. his

  2900. right

  2901. standing

  2902. with

  2903. God

  2904. becomes

  2905. mine

  2906. you

  2907. see

  2908. it's

  2909. not

  2910. just

  2911. that

  2912. all

  2913. of

  2914. our

  2915. sins

  2916. are

  2917. taken

  2918. away

  2919. and

  2920. we're

  2921. left

  2922. naked

  2923. we

  2924. actually

  2925. have

  2926. the

  2927. life

  2928. of

  2929. Jesus

  2930. and

  2931. his

  2932. perfect

  2933. obedience

  2934. and

  2935. that's

  2936. why

  2937. works

  2938. mean

  2939. nothing

  2940. it

  2941. would

  2942. be

  2943. like

  2944. me

  2945. and

  2946. I'm

  2947. going

  2948. to

  2949. go

  2950. to

  2951. the

  2952. biggest

  2953. star

  2954. in

  2955. the

  2956. galaxy

  2957. unbelievably

  2958. bright

  2959. and I

  2960. say

  2961. gosh

  2962. if I'm

  2963. going to

  2964. go

  2965. there

  2966. I

  2967. better

  2968. bring

  2969. this

  2970. pack

  2971. of

  2972. matches

  2973. to

  2974. add

  2975. the

  2976. fire

  2977. to

  2978. it

  2979. well

  2980. that's

  2981. completely

  2982. ridiculous

  2983. I

  2984. could

  2985. have

  2986. I

  2987. could

  2988. I

  2989. could

  2990. I

  2991. could

  2992. have

  2993. bulging

  2994. pockets

  2995. like

  2996. this

  2997. and a

  2998. backpack

  2999. filled

  3000. with

  3001. matches

  3002. which

  3003. are

  3004. my

  3005. good

  3006. deeds

  3007. that

  3008. somehow

  3009. I

  3010. can

  3011. add

  3012. to

  3013. the

  3014. biggest

  3015. star

  3016. in

  3017. the

  3018. galaxy

  3019. it's

  3020. completely

  3021. absurd

  3022. when

  3023. I

  3024. by

  3025. faith

  3026. enter

  3027. into

  3028. what

  3029. my

  3030. new

  3031. covenant

  3032. head

  3033. when

  3034. I

  3035. turn

  3036. and

  3037. say

  3038. Jesus

  3039. I

  3040. need

  3041. rescue

  3042. not

  3043. rules

  3044. will

  3045. you

  3046. be

  3047. my

  3048. savior

  3049. I

  3050. enter

  3051. into

  3052. a

  3053. new

  3054. covenant

  3055. head

  3056. and

  3057. his

  3058. perfect

  3059. life

  3060. of

  3061. obedience

  3062. is

  3063. now

  3064. mine

  3065. his

  3066. life

  3067. is

  3068. mine

  3069. his

  3070. standing

  3071. with

  3072. God

  3073. is

  3074. mine

  3075. and

  3076. that's

  3077. why

  3078. as the

  3079. gospel

  3080. grips

  3081. us

  3082. we

  3083. can

  3084. take

  3085. risks

  3086. we

  3087. can

  3088. risk

  3089. failure

  3090. because

  3091. our

  3092. accomplishments

  3093. aren't

  3094. what's

  3095. going to

  3096. make

  3097. us

  3098. favorable

  3099. or

  3100. attractive

  3101. to

  3102. make

  3103. us

  3104. attractive

  3105. to

  3106. God

  3107. it's

  3108. it's

  3109. it's

  3110. why we

  3111. in a

  3112. sense

  3113. can

  3114. just

  3115. rest

  3116. in

  3117. him

  3118. and

  3119. look

  3120. at

  3121. ourselves

  3122. and

  3123. look

  3124. at

  3125. the

  3126. things

  3127. that

  3128. are

  3129. going

  3130. on

  3131. and

  3132. just

  3133. and

  3134. how

  3135. it

  3136. can

  3137. start

  3138. to

  3139. shape

  3140. us

  3141. with

  3142. confidence

  3143. about

  3144. the

  3145. future

  3146. that

  3147. his

  3148. obedience

  3149. is

  3150. mine

  3151. and

  3152. when

  3153. you

  3154. put

  3155. your

  3156. faith

  3157. and

  3158. trust

  3159. in

  3160. Jesus

  3161. it's

  3162. yours

  3163. no

  3164. matter

  3165. how

  3166. wrecked

  3167. up

  3168. or

  3169. imperfect

  3170. your

  3171. life

  3172. or

  3173. how

  3174. successful

  3175. your

  3176. life

  3177. is

  3178. success

  3179. just

  3180. means

  3181. you

  3182. have

  3183. more

  3184. matches

  3185. to

  3186. bring

  3187. to

  3188. the

  3189. brightest

  3190. star

  3191. in

  3192. the

  3193. galaxy

  3194. let's

  3195. stand

  3196. Andrew could

  3197. you put

  3198. up the

  3199. Romans 1

  3200. 16 to

  3201. 17

  3202. please

  3203. I'd like

  3204. you to

  3205. read this

  3206. with me

  3207. and

  3208. just before

  3209. you read

  3210. it

  3211. you get

  3212. a bit

  3213. of a

  3214. sense

  3215. about

  3216. the

  3217. gospel

  3218. the

  3219. gospel

  3220. is

  3221. this

  3222. good

  3223. news

  3224. of

  3225. what

  3226. Jesus

  3227. has

  3228. done

  3229. for

  3230. us

  3231. on

  3232. the

  3233. cross

  3234. you

  3235. understand

  3236. now

  3237. that

  3238. Jesus

  3239. death

  3240. upon

  3241. the

  3242. cross

  3243. is

  3244. power

  3245. it's

  3246. not

  3247. just

  3248. power

  3249. to

  3250. remove

  3251. the

  3252. bad

  3253. things

  3254. we've

  3255. done

  3256. from

  3257. our

  3258. record

  3259. it's

  3260. actual

  3261. power

  3262. of

  3263. somehow

  3264. or

  3265. another

  3266. his

  3267. obedience

  3268. becomes

  3269. ours

  3270. his

  3271. life

  3272. becomes

  3273. ours

  3274. and

  3275. we

  3276. understand

  3277. that

  3278. he

  3279. does

  3280. this

  3281. for

  3282. everyone

  3283. and

  3284. the

  3285. way

  3286. that

  3287. we

  3288. receive

  3289. it

  3290. is

  3291. I

  3292. have

  3293. nothing

  3294. to

  3295. bring

  3296. you

  3297. I

  3298. need

  3299. you

  3300. to

  3301. rescue

  3302. me

  3303. and

  3304. that's

  3305. what

  3306. believing

  3307. is

  3308. and

  3309. that

  3310. in

  3311. the

  3312. gospel

  3313. that

  3314. what

  3315. God

  3316. does

  3317. we

  3318. understand

  3319. that

  3320. it's

  3321. right

  3322. that

  3323. it's

  3324. justice

  3325. but

  3326. not

  3327. undermining

  3328. justice

  3329. it's

  3330. greater

  3331. than

  3332. justice

  3333. and

  3334. that

  3335. this

  3336. righteousness

  3337. of

  3338. God

  3339. means

  3340. that

  3341. we're

  3342. right

  3343. with

  3344. him

  3345. and

  3346. it's

  3347. revealed

  3348. we're

  3349. told

  3350. it

  3351. by

  3352. the

  3353. Bible

  3354. and

  3355. we

  3356. receive

  3357. it

  3358. from

  3359. faith

  3360. and

  3361. what

  3362. happens

  3363. is

  3364. that

  3365. the

  3366. longer

  3367. you're

  3368. a

  3369. Christian

  3370. the

  3371. more

  3372. you

  3373. know

  3374. you

  3375. need

  3376. faith

  3377. it's

  3378. faith

  3379. to

  3380. faith

  3381. strength

  3382. to

  3383. strength

  3384. faith

  3385. to

  3386. faith

  3387. and

  3388. that's

  3389. how

  3390. we

  3391. live

  3392. we

  3393. live

  3394. with

  3395. a

  3396. righteousness

  3397. right

  3398. standing

  3399. that

  3400. comes

  3401. from

  3402. God

  3403. that

  3404. we

  3405. only

  3406. receive

  3407. by

  3408. faith

  3409. will

  3410. you

  3411. say

  3412. this

  3413. with

  3414. me

  3415. for

  3416. I

  3417. am

  3418. not

  3419. ashamed

  3420. of

  3421. the

  3422. gospel

  3423. with

  3424. power

  3425. of

  3426. God

  3427. for

  3428. salvation

  3429. to

  3430. everyone

  3431. who

  3432. believes

  3433. to

  3434. the

  3435. the

  3436. gospel

  3437. the

  3438. righteousness

  3439. of

  3440. God

  3441. is

  3442. revealed

  3443. from

  3444. faith

  3445. to

  3446. faith

  3447. as

  3448. it

  3449. is

  3450. written

  3451. the

  3452. righteous

  3453. shall

  3454. live

  3455. by

  3456. faith

  3457. father

  3458. there's

  3459. any

  3460. of

  3461. us

  3462. here

  3463. who

  3464. have

  3465. not

  3466. yet

  3467. put

  3468. our

  3469. faith

  3470. and

  3471. trust

  3472. in

  3473. Jesus

  3474. we're

  3475. still

  3476. trying

  3477. to

  3478. think

  3479. that

  3480. the

  3481. Bible

  3482. is

  3483. just

  3484. about

  3485. rules

  3486. about

  3487. how

  3488. to

  3489. be

  3490. sanctified

  3491. about

  3492. how

  3493. to

  3494. fix

  3495. our

  3496. sexuality

  3497. fix

  3498. our

  3499. marriage

  3500. you

  3501. know

  3502. fix

  3503. our

  3504. friendships

  3505. and

  3506. if

  3507. we

  3508. that

  3509. on

  3510. the

  3511. cross

  3512. the

  3513. perfect

  3514. justice

  3515. you

  3516. never

  3517. stop

  3518. being

  3519. just

  3520. you're

  3521. perfectly

  3522. just

  3523. thank

  3524. you

  3525. for

  3526. Jesus

  3527. dealing

  3528. with

  3529. all

  3530. the

  3531. wrong

  3532. that

  3533. we've

  3534. done

  3535. but

  3536. more

  3537. than

  3538. that

  3539. father

  3540. thank

  3541. you

  3542. that

  3543. you

  3544. have

  3545. made

  3546. the

  3547. human

  3548. race

  3549. to

  3550. be

  3551. a

  3552. race

  3553. that

  3554. can

  3555. have

  3556. a

  3557. covenant

  3558. head

  3559. and

  3560. thank

  3561. you

  3562. father

  3563. for

  3564. the

  3565. provision

  3566. of

  3567. Jesus

  3568. to

  3569. be

  3570. a

  3571. true

  3572. and

  3573. greater

  3574. Adam

  3575. that

  3576. we

  3577. can

  3578. call

  3579. to

  3580. by

  3581. faith

  3582. and

  3583. that

  3584. we

  3585. can

  3586. enter

  3587. into

  3588. this

  3589. new

  3590. covenant

  3591. with

  3592. Jesus

  3593. as

  3594. our

  3595. covenant

  3596. head

  3597. that

  3598. his

  3599. right

  3600. standing

  3601. his

  3602. life

  3603. his

  3604. perfect

  3605. obedience

  3606. by the

  3607. mystery

  3608. of

  3609. grace

  3610. in

  3611. your

  3612. love

  3613. somehow

  3614. becomes

  3615. ours

  3616. father

  3617. thank

  3618. you

  3619. for

  3620. this

  3621. father

  3622. make

  3623. us

  3624. disciples

  3625. of

  3626. Jesus

  3627. who

  3628. are

  3629. gripped

  3630. by

  3631. the

  3632. gospel

  3633. and

  3634. now

  3635. can

  3636. live

  3637. to

  3638. bring

  3639. you

  3640. glory

  3641. not

  3642. ourselves

  3643. but

  3644. bring

  3645. you

  3646. glory

  3647. to

  3648. do

  3649. good

  3650. in

  3651. the

  3652. world

  3653. and

  3654. to

  3655. share

  3656. the

  3657. gospel

  3658. to

  3659. bring

  3660. you

  3661. glory

  3662. father

  3663. make

  3664. us

  3665. disciples

  3666. of

  3667. Jesus

  3668. gripped

  3669. by

  3670. the

  3671. gospel

  3672. who

  3673. live

  3674. for

  3675. your

  3676. glory

  3677. and

  3678. to

  3679. this

  3680. we

  3681. say

  3682. amen
