  1. Good morning.

  2. That was quite good.

  3. Good morning. If you don't know me, my name's Chris.

  4. I help oversee community groups here at Watermark.

  5. At Watermark, if you haven't been here for a while,

  6. we often say we're going on a journey together.

  7. Because life is a journey, it's a quest, it's an adventure, it's a voyage.

  8. And those kind of words are meant to make you feel excited.

  9. Like me, when I was six years old, my mum used to read to me

  10. The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

  11. And I was so excited to hear the story.

  12. Because deep inside all of us, journeys and stories like that

  13. kind of impact us because we want to be going somewhere.

  14. We want to feel like there's some purpose for where we're heading.

  15. And the purpose of this journey of life is not just to kind of wander around

  16. aimlessly trying to find some random meaning somewhere.

  17. The purpose is that there is a destination in mind for all of us.

  18. And the Bible is filled with images of journeys.

  19. And the Exodus story that we've been going through over the last few weeks

  20. is one of those stories.

  21. It's a story of redemption where God releases the Israelites out of slavery

  22. into freedom in loving and serving the king, the God of Israel,

  23. the one who wanted to bring them freedom.

  24. And God had made this promise hundreds of years ago to a man called Abraham

  25. that he was going to make this people who were going to go into a land

  26. and they were going to be blessed and they were going to be a blessing

  27. to all the nations.

  28. And this is the purpose that God was beginning to unfold.

  29. But the problem was this journey to the promised land led through the wilderness.

  30. And the wilderness is, well, a wilderness.

  31. It's a place of struggle.

  32. It's a place of discomfort.

  33. It's a place of thirst.

  34. It's a place of craving.

  35. But it's in the wilderness that God wanted to teach his people

  36. what it really meant to trust him.

  37. And he wanted to show them how gracious and glorious his power was

  38. to provide every single step of the way.

  39. Because he wanted to show them that once they got in the promised land,

  40. which was filled with all these blessings,

  41. that actually the greatest blessing wasn't the gifts and the blessings of the land,

  42. the physical blessings,

  43. but he was going to be the greatest blessing for them.

  44. That's what he was about.

  45. And the New Testament, in Hebrews 3, other passages,

  46. gives us this same idea of a journey.

  47. It uses this Exodus story to describe what it means for us to be Christian.

  48. God releases us from captivity to sin,

  49. and then he passes us through not the Red Sea,

  50. but the waters of baptism.

  51. He then leads us onto a journey into a new resurrection,

  52. new creation,

  53. a restored world which satisfies every desire for peace,

  54. for security, for longing,

  55. for harmony and joy.

  56. And through that, he brings a perfect mediator,

  57. not like Moses, an imperfect one,

  58. but Jesus Christ,

  59. to take us there.

  60. But we're not yet in the promised land.

  61. Now is actually the journey through the wilderness.

  62. That's the way the Bible described it.

  63. We haven't yet arrived into full,

  64. perfect comfort and redemption.

  65. So my aim this morning is to talk about how we live well in the wilderness,

  66. and to find that our greatest treasure is not found in making our lives more air-conditioned,

  67. but in finding joy in this wilderness.

  68. And that's what we're all about in this series.

  69. This series is really about how Christ,

  70. if you're a Christian,

  71. he has set you free,

  72. but he set you free from slavery to things.

  73. And whether it's control,

  74. whether it's your own sense of self-reliance,

  75. whether it's fear of others,

  76. or today we're looking at comfort,

  77. these things we look to to satisfy us,

  78. but God says they're not the ones,

  79. the things that are ultimately going to satisfy you.

  80. And we'll find ourselves,

  81. if we chase after these things,

  82. drinking from a sewage pipe,

  83. rather than drinking from the living water that God wants to give us.

  84. So we're going to have a look at this story together,

  85. and we're going to look at grumbling in the wilderness,

  86. comfort in the wilderness,

  87. and God's vision for the wilderness.

  88. So grumbling in the wilderness,

  89. our comfort in the wilderness,

  90. God's vision for the wilderness.

  91. So let's kind of dive into the story a little bit.

  92. Okay, if you've got your bulletin here,

  93. kind of you can check through with me.

  94. Chapter 15, 22 to 27.

  95. It's been three days since the euphoria of passing through the Red Sea.

  96. The honeymoon period is over.

  97. The water's running out, it's hot, it's dry,

  98. it's worse than Hong Kong in the summer,

  99. and Moses sees a spring.

  100. And he goes up to it to get water,

  101. and it's filthy, undrinkable.

  102. And everyone is grumpy and thirsty.

  103. This isn't what I bargained for.

  104. Where's the 7-Eleven?

  105. And God's people are worse than a bunch of whining kids

  106. stuck in a traffic jam in a non-air-conditioned bus in the summer.

  107. They're whining, they're complaining to Moses,

  108. and Moses says,

  109. God, okay, help me.

  110. And God provides an amazing water purification system,

  111. and they can drink.

  112. And then, God, remember,

  113. who is guiding them with a pillar of cloud and fire,

  114. he leads them to Elim.

  115. And Elim is like an oasis in the desert.

  116. It's got shade, it's got coconut milk,

  117. it's beautiful, it's paradise.

  118. Finally, it feels like this is more like it.

  119. They settle down there for a few days

  120. in their little resort of Elim.

  121. And then, chapter 16, 1-4,

  122. they've got to move on.

  123. The holiday's over.

  124. They've got to move out further into the wilderness.

  125. God is leading them on.

  126. And he's leading them somewhere.

  127. But nearly one month later,

  128. the food supplies start running low.

  129. They're on to one-figure day.

  130. They're getting seriously hungry.

  131. And the Israelites are like me.

  132. When I'm hungry, I'm miserable.

  133. And the whining starts as a little murmur,

  134. and then it grows, and then it grows,

  135. and then it grows,

  136. until finally the frustration explodes.

  137. Verse 3,

  138. If only we had died by the Lord's hand in Egypt.

  139. There we sat around pots of meat

  140. and ate all the food we wanted,

  141. but you have brought us out into this desert

  142. to starve this entire assembly to death.

  143. They're a grateful lot.

  144. Now, I don't know if you remember earlier in the story,

  145. but in Egypt, I don't remember the Israelites

  146. sitting around like barbecues,

  147. kind of rejoicing in the food.

  148. Do you remember that?

  149. No, they were crying out for God to save them,

  150. for God to rescue them, right?

  151. And they'd forgotten that kind of part,

  152. you know, rose-tinted spectacles,

  153. looking back on the past.

  154. But, you know, when we experience discomfort,

  155. our temptation is always to compare

  156. to another time, to other people.

  157. The grass always looks greener

  158. than where we are right at the moment.

  159. And they've lost sight of where God is taking them,

  160. and they've lost sight of what God has done for them,

  161. and they've lost sight of the promised land.

  162. And they think, because it's hard now,

  163. Moses must be against them,

  164. God must be against them,

  165. they'd rather die than follow what God has got for them.

  166. Because, you see, the Israelites were more focused

  167. on their stomachs and discomfort

  168. than seeing the goodness of God,

  169. and they'd lost sight of him.

  170. They'd lost sight of the miracles.

  171. They'd lost sight of the way he provided

  172. every step of the way.

  173. And they kept losing sight of that.

  174. Now, it's not that their need for food was illegitimate, totally.

  175. Food is necessary to live,

  176. but God had showed them,

  177. I will provide every step of the way.

  178. I just want to use this as an opportunity

  179. for you to see just how amazing my grace and my love is,

  180. because I will always provide for my people.

  181. But they were more interested in getting a comfortable ride

  182. than really in knowing God in this process.

  183. Now, I don't know about you,

  184. but if you've got a bunch of whining kids

  185. in the back of your car,

  186. and you've already given them a snack recently,

  187. and it's not far now,

  188. and you're saying,

  189. hold on, there's a great meal coming,

  190. and they're still whining,

  191. I don't know what your response is.

  192. My response is usually frustration.

  193. But God is incredibly patient with the Israelites.

  194. He graciously provides for them.

  195. He says, verse four,

  196. I'll rain down bread from heaven for you,

  197. but I'm not going to give it so you can kind of bulk by,

  198. so you can kind of put some away in the freezer for later.

  199. Every day, you're going to have to depend on me for grace.

  200. Every day, it's a test to see every day,

  201. will you trust me?

  202. And on the Sabbath,

  203. you're going to have to collect enough for two days,

  204. and I'm going to provide it,

  205. because I want you to rest, put me first,

  206. know that you can trust me.

  207. To satisfy all your needs with good things,

  208. because I'm good, and I care for you.

  209. Verse six says,

  210. In the evening, you'll know that it was the Lord

  211. who brought you out of Egypt,

  212. and in the morning, you'll see the glory of the Lord,

  213. because he's heard your grumbling against him.

  214. Every circumstance that God brings you and I into,

  215. no matter whether it's coming to the springs of Elim,

  216. and it's beautiful, and it's comfortable,

  217. or whether it's wandering in the wilderness,

  218. is an opportunity, is a gift,

  219. a circumstance where God says,

  220. here is a chance for you to rely on me,

  221. for you to put me first, for you to trust me.

  222. Here's a chance for you to experience my grace sustaining you.

  223. Verse 10, God shows up in the wilderness.

  224. He says, I am with you.

  225. His presence is there with them.

  226. That's what he wants to say to some of us now

  227. who feel like we're going through a wilderness in our lives.

  228. I am there.

  229. I am with you.

  230. You can trust me to provide.

  231. Will you?

  232. And the thing is, God in this story is not just interested

  233. in giving the Israelites a hard life.

  234. He actually provides great tasting manna.

  235. He could have provided anything.

  236. He provides honey flavored crackers.

  237. Okay?

  238. And it's a foretaste of the milk and honey

  239. that he's going to bring them into the promised land for.

  240. And you know, they're full.

  241. Verse 18, they lack nothing.

  242. And all the grateful Israelites can say is,

  243. when they see this manna, what is it?

  244. Which is what manna means.

  245. Manna means, what is it?

  246. You can see how grateful they are.

  247. God wants them to know his grace.

  248. All they can see is their circumstances and their discomfort.

  249. And even after all of that,

  250. God providing again and again,

  251. the Israelites still doubt that God's going to be good enough

  252. to provide for them.

  253. So they go out collecting more than God tells them to collect.

  254. Just in case.

  255. Because you never know if God's really good.

  256. He came through last time,

  257. but maybe he's not going to come through again.

  258. So we've got to provide.

  259. We've got to build a little bit of security.

  260. We've got to make sure,

  261. because maybe God really isn't good enough for us.

  262. Let me ask you right now,

  263. what's going on in your life?

  264. Is it an Elim experience?

  265. Does it feel like a wilderness experience?

  266. Do you see what's happening in your life as a gift from God,

  267. as an opportunity to know him and to see his grace?

  268. Or are you like the Israelites,

  269. who are more consumed with your comfort,

  270. that you've lost sight of a gracious, good God,

  271. who has provided many, many things for us?

  272. That's the grumbling in the wilderness.

  273. Next, our comfort in the wilderness.

  274. In this passage, Moses actually says,

  275. your grumbling and complaining is not against me.

  276. It's not just kind of being real.

  277. It's against God.

  278. He's saying, you're actually saying to God in this circumstances,

  279. you're not good.

  280. We can't trust you.

  281. Because complaining in a way that refuses to run to God

  282. in circumstances and find your hope in him

  283. is always, always a desire for something more than God.

  284. For them, it was a desire for comfort more than God.

  285. And anything you desire more than God,

  286. the Bible calls an idol.

  287. It's a sign when you start complaining and grumbling

  288. that actually you think God is not good,

  289. something else you deserve, you should get more than God.

  290. It's an idol.

  291. I teach on a Monday night at Hong Kong Youth Space.

  292. I teach English there.

  293. A couple of weeks ago, I was just kind of coming back.

  294. I'd done some cleaning in the flat before I went.

  295. I finished my class about 9.45.

  296. I'm on the bus back.

  297. It's 10.15.

  298. I'm tired.

  299. I'm hungry.

  300. I just want to get home and rest.

  301. And then Fiona, my wife, calls me.

  302. And she's just got back from a long day.

  303. And she's just come into the kitchen

  304. and just seen the state of the kitchen.

  305. And it's not a pleasant sight.

  306. I'd forgotten that I'd been a little bit too engrossed

  307. in my other things to actually clear up the mess

  308. that was in the kitchen.

  309. And my wife graciously reminds me that actually,

  310. I mean, she needs to take 15 minutes

  311. to try and clear everything up

  312. so the devastation doesn't kind of remain.

  313. And she's tired.

  314. And she tells me,

  315. hey, can you be just a little bit,

  316. she's very gracious.

  317. Listen, I know you've helped,

  318. but could you just be a little bit more responsible,

  319. clear up after you've done,

  320. because that would just make my life

  321. so much easier in this thing.

  322. She's been gracious.

  323. But as she's speaking,

  324. I'm getting frustrated and impatient.

  325. So I quickly try and shut down the conversation.

  326. Okay, okay, fine, fine, fine.

  327. I'll do it next time.

  328. I'll better do it.

  329. I'll do it next time.

  330. My wife knows that I'm not really listening.

  331. No understanding from me

  332. as to what she's just had to do.

  333. She's tired.

  334. And I'm thinking,

  335. I don't need this.

  336. Don't you know what a long day I've had?

  337. Don't you realize

  338. that I have done 90% of the cleaning in the flat today?

  339. Poor Chris.

  340. Isn't life hard?

  341. I just need a break.

  342. That's all I want now.

  343. Just give me some peace.

  344. I don't have to deal with this now.

  345. Poor me.

  346. It's not fair.

  347. Isn't life terrible?

  348. Now, what's going on in my heart?

  349. I held my tongue.

  350. I didn't say that to her.

  351. But actually,

  352. because she didn't experience my apology,

  353. she didn't experience my sympathy in that,

  354. I didn't express my frustration.

  355. I held my tongue.

  356. But actually,

  357. if you could have seen what was going on in my heart,

  358. you would have seen

  359. that whether I'd said it or not,

  360. exactly the same thing was going on here,

  361. and God looks at the heart.

  362. Because you see,

  363. why am I so impatient and frustrated

  364. when something that's clearly my fault

  365. and it's been dealt with graciously,

  366. well, is it because I'm tired?

  367. Well, tiredness contributes to those things,

  368. but tiredness doesn't cause me to be impatient.

  369. You know,

  370. I don't suddenly get tired

  371. and then I'm really impatient.

  372. It doesn't happen like that.

  373. Tiredness lets down my guard,

  374. but actually what my heart wants,

  375. it wants comfort.

  376. It wants me to have my little world

  377. just suiting me at that time.

  378. And my wife was stopping me

  379. getting comfort at that moment.

  380. I didn't want to hear it.

  381. And I deserve comfort

  382. because I work hard.

  383. And my wife is not feeling loved

  384. by the way that I respond.

  385. I'm not actually thinking about her

  386. because it's actually all about me.

  387. And the root of all our idols

  388. is a self-centeredness

  389. which wants life to be all about me,

  390. what suits me,

  391. what's comfortable for me.

  392. And it stops me seeing other people

  393. and loving them.

  394. And I think if I'm honest,

  395. as I look around Hong Kong,

  396. I think this idol of comfort

  397. is one of the ones

  398. that we actually struggle with enormously.

  399. Even in our church,

  400. we struggle with this.

  401. Because we're told

  402. that satisfaction in life

  403. is found just if you can make your life

  404. as comfortable and convenient as possible.

  405. And discomfort must be avoided.

  406. at all possible costs.

  407. You see, we live in a city

  408. that just revolves around convenience and comfort.

  409. Technology and science

  410. has developed our lives,

  411. transformed it to the point

  412. where we are the most comfortable people

  413. in the whole of history.

  414. There were emperors before

  415. were never as comfortable as we are.

  416. You know, the Israelites struggle to find food.

  417. We have shops open late

  418. selling fast food

  419. because we can't wait for slow food.

  420. and then you even get Food Panda

  421. to deliver it to your home

  422. so you don't have to walk out of the door.

  423. It's amazing.

  424. We have helpers,

  425. great public transport,

  426. fast internet,

  427. Siri.

  428. You know, you don't even have to

  429. press a button on your phone now.

  430. You can just talk into it

  431. and it does what you want.

  432. And I could go on and on and on and on and on.

  433. There's so many things we have.

  434. Washing machines.

  435. You know, incredible.

  436. But washing machines are great.

  437. But in spite of all the inconvenience we have in Hong Kong,

  438. I still find myself complaining.

  439. I complain about the lack of space.

  440. I complain about the air quality.

  441. I complain about those annoying people

  442. who stand on the lift texting

  443. right in my way

  444. so it takes me at least five seconds longer

  445. to get either to the lift

  446. or get down the escalator.

  447. We complain about schooling.

  448. Okay.

  449. And I then say,

  450. it's not like this in the UK.

  451. You know, we have great air.

  452. And I go back to the UK.

  453. And you know, the air's great.

  454. And you know, there's space.

  455. And then I ring up the customer service.

  456. And I'm sent halfway around the world.

  457. And they're not contactable after 7 p.m.

  458. And the shop's shut at 5.30 or 6.

  459. And the nearest one is about 15-minute drive.

  460. And the public transport is so expensive

  461. and always delayed.

  462. And very quickly I realize I'm complaining.

  463. Because,

  464. and everyone else is complaining as well.

  465. Doesn't matter where you go.

  466. Everyone complains.

  467. Now, why,

  468. if we have this unprecedented level of comfort

  469. that others in the past would only have dreamed of,

  470. do I still complain and grumble?

  471. Why?

  472. Because I believe the great lie

  473. that just having more comfort,

  474. a bigger flat,

  475. retirement,

  476. a vacation,

  477. anything else,

  478. something more will satisfy me.

  479. And you know,

  480. we're willing to suffer long hours of work

  481. just so we can make our life

  482. and our family's life more comfortable

  483. in the future.

  484. But it doesn't matter where you live.

  485. It doesn't matter how much time-saving gadgets you have.

  486. You will never truly be satisfied with them

  487. because there will always be inconvenience

  488. and uncomfortable people

  489. and uncomfortable situations

  490. that will frustrate you.

  491. Always.

  492. You will never be satisfied.

  493. Because now is a wilderness time.

  494. There are times of refreshment.

  495. It's not the promised land.

  496. There are ELIM experiences.

  497. There are good things.

  498. But you know,

  499. what happens is

  500. a greater comfort

  501. leads to greater expectations.

  502. And yesterday's desires

  503. become today's needs and demands.

  504. When internet first came out

  505. and I first went on the internet,

  506. it was amazing.

  507. I was like,

  508. wow,

  509. just,

  510. it was great.

  511. It was such a privilege.

  512. And it would take like 10 years

  513. to download one page.

  514. But I could wait.

  515. Now,

  516. if it takes longer than one second,

  517. I'm like shouting at the computer.

  518. I'm like cursing the thing.

  519. Why?

  520. Because

  521. I now expect

  522. and I think

  523. that this is what I deserve.

  524. And a desire has become a need,

  525. become a demand.

  526. And the thing is,

  527. our expectations

  528. are shaped

  529. by everybody around us.

  530. We compare to everyone around.

  531. And we always think

  532. like the Israelites

  533. that the grass is greener

  534. on the other side.

  535. So if we just get something more,

  536. then it's always going to be better.

  537. And we're in a competition

  538. in Hong Kong

  539. and you can't get left behind

  540. by anybody else.

  541. And we focus more

  542. on what we don't have

  543. than what we do.

  544. And we become ungrateful.

  545. And we'll shy away

  546. from ever making decisions

  547. which will make us

  548. uncomfortable

  549. for the sake of the gospel

  550. because we think

  551. that life is going to collapse

  552. if I'm uncomfortable.

  553. And so it's going to be moaning

  554. and complaining

  555. if my life

  556. is not the way I want it.

  557. Because for me,

  558. and I struggle with this one,

  559. fundamentally life

  560. is more about me

  561. than about God.

  562. I think I deserve

  563. to have comfort

  564. and I'm not willing

  565. to be inconvenienced

  566. because I can't imagine

  567. that I can live without it.

  568. Spurgeon,

  569. who's a great English preacher,

  570. said,

  571. when we have much

  572. of God's providential mercies,

  573. his amazing mercy,

  574. it often happens

  575. that we have

  576. but little of God's grace

  577. and little gratitude

  578. for the bounties,

  579. the enormous abundance

  580. that we have received.

  581. We are full

  582. and we forget God,

  583. satisfied with earth

  584. and we're content

  585. to do without heaven.

  586. Rest assured,

  587. it's harder to know

  588. how to be full

  589. than it is to know

  590. how to be hungry.

  591. Take care

  592. that you ask

  593. in your prayers

  594. that God would teach you

  595. how to be full.

  596. Isn't that interesting?

  597. We are often full

  598. yet not satisfied

  599. and yet God says,

  600. I want to teach you

  601. how to be full

  602. and it's my provision.

  603. So where do you see

  604. your heart

  605. regularly complaining?

  606. Are the blessings

  607. that you have

  608. held with open hands

  609. knowing that they're

  610. a gift from God

  611. graciously given?

  612. Are our lives

  613. personally as a church

  614. marked by a radical

  615. thankfulness

  616. and contentment

  617. whether we're in Elim

  618. or whether we're

  619. in the wilderness

  620. or are we never

  621. happy with what we've got

  622. always wanting

  623. that we've got to have more?

  624. We grumble

  625. in the wilderness

  626. because we seek comfort

  627. more than we want

  628. to find satisfaction

  629. in God.

  630. Thirdly,

  631. God's vision

  632. for us

  633. in the wilderness.

  634. God's vision

  635. for us

  636. in the wilderness.

  637. The problem

  638. with the Israelites

  639. is that they've shrunk

  640. their little worlds

  641. down to their stomachs.

  642. But God

  643. wanted to expand

  644. their vision.

  645. God had called

  646. Israel out of Egypt

  647. into a relationship

  648. with himself

  649. to experience

  650. his grace

  651. and blessings

  652. so that they would

  653. be a blessing

  654. to the nations.

  655. You look at the end

  656. of this passage

  657. verse 32 to 34

  658. with this test

  659. that God brings

  660. them through

  661. and God is faithful

  662. they're unfaithful

  663. but he still provides

  664. and he tells

  665. this unfaithful people

  666. put a piece of manna

  667. in a jar

  668. to save it

  669. as a testimony

  670. to generations

  671. to come

  672. of how good

  673. and faithful

  674. God is

  675. because they're going

  676. to forget

  677. like you forget.

  678. And God's vision

  679. for this test

  680. that he takes them

  681. through

  682. is not just

  683. about them.

  684. He's wanting

  685. to make it

  686. so that their eyes

  687. get focused on him

  688. and so that they

  689. can see

  690. that regardless

  691. of how comfortable

  692. or uncomfortable

  693. how convenient

  694. or inconvenient

  695. God is leading

  696. them to a place

  697. where his name

  698. his glory

  699. his goodness

  700. will be made

  701. known to themselves

  702. and to millions

  703. of people

  704. like us

  705. who are reading

  706. the story

  707. even today.

  708. That's what God's

  709. wanting to do

  710. through this

  711. little incident.

  712. But

  713. what we do

  714. what I do

  715. is we focus down

  716. on our narrow

  717. things that we

  718. think we need

  719. and we narrow

  720. the world

  721. down to an

  722. armchair of one

  723. when God

  724. wants to

  725. expand it

  726. to a whole

  727. world that

  728. is out there.

  729. I think the story

  730. says these two

  731. things for us.

  732. One is God's

  733. vision for your

  734. journey and our

  735. journey as a church

  736. is to grow

  737. our delight

  738. in him.

  739. Grow our delight

  740. in him.

  741. Jesus

  742. in John

    John 6 chapter mention

  743. chapter 6

  744. he says to a

  745. crowd of people

  746. he's fed

  747. the 5,000

  748. hungry people

  749. and you know

  750. what happens

  751. after them

  752. they start to

  753. follow him

  754. because

  755. they just want

  756. to get fed.

  757. They want to get

  758. food because

  759. they think

  760. Jesus

  761. he's a great

  762. bakery.

  763. That's what

  764. they're thinking

  765. and so

  766. Jesus

  767. says to them

  768. your fathers

  769. ate manna

  770. in the wilderness

  771. and they died

  772. but I

  773. am the bread

  774. of life.

  775. Whoever comes

  776. to me

  777. will never

  778. grow hungry

  779. whoever believes

  780. in me

  781. will never

  782. be thirsty.

  783. When we

  784. celebrate a

  785. communion

  786. we celebrate

  787. with the bread

  788. of God's

  789. provision

  790. for our

  791. needs

  792. by dying

  793. on a cross

  794. showing that

  795. he's good

  796. that he loves

  797. us

  798. that he'll

  799. provide for

  800. us

  801. but you know

  802. how those

  803. people responded

  804. they started

  805. grumbling

  806. and they walked

  807. away

  808. many of them

  809. from Jesus

  810. because Jesus

  811. for them

  812. was only a

  813. means of

  814. food

  815. and if you

  816. want Jesus

  817. just to get

  818. his blessings

  819. then when he's

  820. provided one meal

  821. for you

  822. you'll soon

  823. become hungry

  824. again

  825. and if he

  826. doesn't seem

  827. to provide it

  828. as quickly

  829. as you want

  830. then you'll

  831. go away

  832. and look

  833. for another

  834. canteen

  835. to find

  836. food from

  837. but Jesus

  838. is saying

  839. I'm not just

  840. about giving

  841. you meals

  842. blessings

  843. physical

  844. things

  845. I don't

  846. want to

  847. just give

  848. you that

  849. I want

  850. to give

  851. you myself

  852. the chef

  853. and if you

  854. get the

  855. chef

  856. do you know

  857. what

  858. you get

  859. unlimited

  860. blessings

  861. which will

  862. last

  863. eternally

  864. satisfyingly

  865. and I know

  866. what you need

  867. and I will

  868. provide what

  869. you need

  870. it's not

  871. about you

  872. and getting

  873. the blessings

  874. and getting

  875. the comfort

  876. it's about

  877. him

  878. because when

  879. you get

  880. him

  881. you get

  882. everything

  883. that's

  884. what God

  885. is doing

  886. so do you

  887. come to

  888. church

  889. is your

  890. relationship

  891. with God

  892. just about

  893. getting fed

  894. or is it

  895. actually about

  896. I want

  897. to really

  898. know Jesus

  899. as a church

  900. Jesus says

  901. to you

  902. and to me

  903. whatever is

  904. going on

  905. in your life

  906. right now

  907. are you

  908. willing to

  909. lay down

  910. your chase

  911. for temporary

  912. comfort

  913. which will

  914. soon leave

  915. you hungry

  916. are you

  917. willing to

  918. lay it down

  919. for the sake

  920. of the gospel

  921. for the sake

  922. of having

  923. a satisfaction

  924. in me

  925. are you

  926. going to

  927. hold it

  928. with open

  929. hands

  930. because I

  931. want to

  932. satisfy you

  933. in a way

  934. that you

  935. will not

  936. be satisfied

  937. if you

  938. chase

  939. comfort

  940. if you're

  941. a Christian

  942. if you're

  943. not a

  944. Christian

  945. following

  946. Jesus

  947. is not

  948. going to

  949. make your

  950. life

  951. easier

  952. listen

  953. it's

  954. going to

  955. make

  956. your

  957. life

  958. harder

  959. guaranteed

  960. if you

  961. really want

  962. to follow

  963. Jesus

  964. it will

  965. make it

  966. harder

  967. but it

  968. will

  969. make it

  970. the most

  971. satisfying

  972. life

  973. that you

  974. can ever

  975. possibly

  976. lead

  977. because he

  978. says

  979. I

  980. am

  981. the bread

  982. of life

  983. the bread

  984. of life

  985. if you

  986. want to

  987. live

  988. come

  989. to me

  990. and the

  991. call today

  992. is are you

  993. willing to

  994. follow him

  995. however

  996. uncomfortable

  997. or inconvenient

  998. he is

  999. because he

  1000. wants to

  1001. show you

  1002. how good

  1003. he is

  1004. so we

  1005. need to

  1006. repent

  1007. of where

  1008. we

  1009. actually

  1010. think

  1011. other

  1012. things

  1013. are better

  1014. than

  1015. him

  1016. it's

  1017. about

  1018. delighting

  1019. in

  1020. him

  1021. but it's

  1022. not

  1023. just

  1024. about

  1025. that

  1026. it's

  1027. about

  1028. because

  1029. vision

  1030. for the

  1031. wilderness

  1032. is

  1033. about

  1034. others

  1035. as well

  1036. do you

  1037. know

  1038. that

  1039. contentment

  1040. is one

  1041. of God's

  1042. great

  1043. evangelistic

  1044. strategies

  1045. did you

  1046. know

  1047. that

  1048. Philippians

    Philippians 2:14–15

  1049. 2

  1050. verse

  1051. 14

  1052. to 15

  1053. it says

  1054. this

  1055. Paul

  1056. who writes

  1057. it

  1058. he says

  1059. do

  1060. everything

  1061. without

  1062. grumbling

  1063. or arguing

  1064. so that

  1065. you

  1066. do

  1067. everything

  1068. everything

  1069. without

  1070. grumbling

  1071. or arguing

  1072. so that

  1073. you may

  1074. be pure

  1075. and blameless

  1076. children

  1077. of God

  1078. without fault

  1079. in a warped

  1080. and crooked

  1081. generation

  1082. then

  1083. you

  1084. if you're

  1085. not grumbling

  1086. you

  1087. will shine

  1088. among them

  1089. you will shine

  1090. among them

  1091. like stars

  1092. in the sky

  1093. as you

  1094. hold

  1095. firmly

  1096. the word

  1097. of life

  1098. he's saying

  1099. in a society

  1100. of comfort

  1101. seekers

  1102. grumblers

  1103. like me

  1104. complainers

  1105. like me

  1106. God's

  1107. evangelistic

  1108. strategy

  1109. for Hong Kong

  1110. is to

  1111. raise up

  1112. a church

  1113. which will

  1114. find contentment

  1115. in him

  1116. so that

  1117. when you

  1118. go out

  1119. into your

  1120. families

  1121. your workplaces

  1122. your friendship

  1123. circles

  1124. and they

  1125. see what's

  1126. going on

  1127. in your life

  1128. where things

  1129. are not

  1130. comfortable

  1131. but actually

  1132. you're still

  1133. able to find

  1134. joy and

  1135. satisfaction

  1136. in him

  1137. and you're

  1138. still able

  1139. to be content

  1140. and people

  1141. will look at

  1142. you and say

  1143. what is up

  1144. with you

  1145. how can

  1146. you

  1147. still

  1148. find

  1149. contentment

  1150. when you're

  1151. not getting

  1152. everything

  1153. you want

  1154. and you know

  1155. some people

  1156. will be

  1157. attracted

  1158. to that

  1159. light

  1160. and will

  1161. be able

  1162. to point

  1163. them to

  1164. Christ

  1165. to say

  1166. it's not

  1167. me

  1168. it's him

  1169. turn to

  1170. him

  1171. because he's

  1172. the one

  1173. who can

  1174. do it

  1175. for you

  1176. as well

  1177. in a

  1178. thirsty

  1179. hungry

  1180. society

  1181. around us

  1182. that's

  1183. what Hong Kong

  1184. needs

  1185. it's not

  1186. about

  1187. you

  1188. it's about

  1189. Christ

  1190. it's not

  1191. about you

  1192. it's about

  1193. others

  1194. I worked

  1195. for a while

  1196. in a garden

  1197. centre

  1198. in the UK

  1199. and one

  1200. day

  1201. I was

  1202. in one

  1203. of these

  1204. polytunnels

  1205. they're kind

  1206. of like

  1207. green

  1208. like plastic

  1209. greenhouses

  1210. and I was

  1211. watering

  1212. some tomato

  1213. plants

  1214. in there

  1215. I had a

  1216. hose

  1217. put the

  1218. hose

  1219. on one

  1220. of the

  1221. tomato

  1222. plants

  1223. it snapped

  1224. in two

  1225. and I'm

  1226. like

  1227. oh no

  1228. so

  1229. I went

  1230. to the

  1231. head

  1232. gardener

  1233. and I said

  1234. I'm really

  1235. sorry

  1236. I'm just

  1237. destroyed

  1238. one of

  1239. your

  1240. tomato

  1241. plants

  1242. and he

  1243. turned

  1244. around

  1245. to me

  1246. and he

  1247. said

  1248. don't

  1249. worry

  1250. it's

  1251. fine

  1252. because

  1253. you know

  1254. those

  1255. tomato

  1256. plants

  1257. there

  1258. they

  1259. were

  1260. not

  1261. supposed

  1262. to be

  1263. kept

  1264. inside

  1265. in the

  1266. warm

  1267. and the

  1268. comfort

  1269. of that

  1270. greenhouse

  1271. because

  1272. you know

  1273. those tomato

  1274. plants

  1275. are actually

  1276. meant to be

  1277. kept outside

  1278. in the rain

  1279. and the storms

  1280. and the elements

  1281. of life

  1282. because you know

  1283. when they face

  1284. those things

  1285. what happens

  1286. is it strengthens

  1287. their branches

  1288. it strengthens

  1289. them

  1290. so that they're

  1291. able to hold

  1292. more fruit

  1293. and you say

  1294. he said

  1295. that tomato

  1296. heart snapped

  1297. because it actually

  1298. never felt

  1299. the pressure

  1300. of the water

  1301. and it's never

  1302. going to be

  1303. the tomato

  1304. plant that it

  1305. should have been

  1306. you and I

  1307. and this

  1308. church

  1309. is meant

  1310. to be a

  1311. tomato

  1312. plant

  1313. that is

  1314. meant to

  1315. bear fruit

  1316. fruit

  1317. isn't for

  1318. you

  1319. you don't

  1320. eat your

  1321. own fruit

  1322. if you're

  1323. a tomato

  1324. plant

  1325. fruit

  1326. is for

  1327. others

  1328. that's

  1329. what we're

  1330. made for

  1331. a tomato

  1332. plant is

  1333. made to

  1334. bear fruit

  1335. Christians

  1336. are made

  1337. to bear

  1338. fruit

  1339. the church

  1340. is made

  1341. to be

  1342. a tomato

  1343. bearing

  1344. plant

  1345. and we

  1346. will never

  1347. enjoy

  1348. who you

  1349. and we

  1350. were meant

  1351. to be

  1352. as a church

  1353. if we

  1354. simply stay

  1355. inside the

  1356. greenhouse

  1357. of comfort

  1358. and we

  1359. don't step

  1360. out to

  1361. those who

  1362. don't know

  1363. Christ

  1364. to those

  1365. who are

  1366. not

  1367. comfortable

  1368. reaching out

  1369. to

  1370. yes in

  1371. the outside

  1372. God does

  1373. bring sunshine

  1374. he does

  1375. bring times

  1376. of refreshment

  1377. and joy

  1378. and pleasure

  1379. and comfort

  1380. like Elim

  1381. he wants to

  1382. do that

  1383. to show you

  1384. his goodness

  1385. but he will

  1386. lead you on

  1387. into the

  1388. wilderness

  1389. and in the

  1390. wilderness

  1391. of our

  1392. lives

  1393. out there

  1394. is where

  1395. that we'll

  1396. have stories

  1397. to tell

  1398. to generations

  1399. to come

  1400. to people

  1401. around you

  1402. of how good

  1403. and amazing

  1404. our God

  1405. is

  1406. and that's

  1407. our experience

  1408. as a church

  1409. you know

  1410. we don't always

  1411. have this venue

  1412. we like

  1413. people in the

  1414. wilderness

  1415. sometimes

  1416. but God

  1417. has provided

  1418. a venue

  1419. he's provided

  1420. finances

  1421. again and

  1422. again and

  1423. again for

  1424. us as a

  1425. church

  1426. it's not

  1427. about us

  1428. it's about

  1429. him

  1430. it's about

  1431. people around

  1432. us in this

  1433. city who

  1434. don't know

  1435. him

  1436. so let me

  1437. challenge us

  1438. as a church

  1439. as a church

  1440. we believe

  1441. in community

  1442. because we

  1443. believe that

  1444. the gospel

  1445. brings people

  1446. together

  1447. it's one of

  1448. our values

  1449. there is

  1450. a danger

  1451. with community

  1452. the danger

  1453. with community

  1454. is we can

  1455. be so

  1456. comfortable

  1457. with our

  1458. particular

  1459. community

  1460. that we

  1461. never do

  1462. this thing

  1463. which is

  1464. called

  1465. mission

  1466. we're never

  1467. reaching out

  1468. because we

  1469. don't want to

  1470. go out of

  1471. our comfort

  1472. zone to

  1473. the people

  1474. that we're

  1475. not so

  1476. comfortable

  1477. with

  1478. because we

  1479. want to

  1480. stay in

  1481. the greenhouse

  1482. students

  1483. singles

  1484. who do

  1485. you talk

  1486. to after

  1487. the service

  1488. do you

  1489. only ever

  1490. talk to

  1491. people who

  1492. are like

  1493. you

  1494. or are

  1495. you willing

  1496. to go out

  1497. of your

  1498. comfort to

  1499. see who

  1500. God might

  1501. be bringing

  1502. around you

  1503. and to

  1504. take a step

  1505. of faith

  1506. to actually

  1507. go up to

  1508. somebody

  1509. and say

  1510. hi

  1511. some of

  1512. us

  1513. that's the

  1514. step we

  1515. need to

  1516. take

  1517. marriage

  1518. do you

  1519. only ever

  1520. talk to

  1521. married

  1522. people

  1523. or are

  1524. you willing

  1525. to engage

  1526. with people

  1527. who are

  1528. not like

  1529. you

  1530. who are

  1531. singles

  1532. who are

  1533. non-believers

  1534. who are

  1535. people who

  1536. are wrestling

  1537. with things

  1538. that you

  1539. have no

  1540. idea

  1541. how to

  1542. deal with

  1543. but you're

  1544. willing

  1545. to go

  1546. out of

  1547. your way

  1548. because if

  1549. we don't

  1550. do that

  1551. we're going

  1552. to miss

  1553. out on

  1554. the stories

  1555. that God

  1556. wants to

  1557. show us

  1558. his grace

  1559. and his

  1560. glory

  1561. and you

  1562. know

  1563. if you're

  1564. an introvert

  1565. and a thousand

  1566. objections come

  1567. to your mind

  1568. or even if you're

  1569. an extrovert

  1570. and you've got a thousand

  1571. things in your mind

  1572. which say

  1573. I can't reach out

  1574. to somebody

  1575. who's not like me

  1576. because I don't know

  1577. what to say

  1578. I don't know

  1579. where to go

  1580. and God says

  1581. listen I'm the same

  1582. God as the God

  1583. of the wilderness

  1584. I provide grace

  1585. for every situation

1586. so will you ask me

  1587. for grace

  1588. and then step out

  1589. and you'll see me

  1590. provide

  1591. whether it's words

  1592. whether it's the

  1593. the ability

  1594. to connect

  1595. with someone

  1596. whatever it is

  1597. God will provide

  1598. in your cgs

  1599. when was the last

  1600. time we started

  1601. thinking not just

  1602. about how

  1603. to be comfortable

  1604. but about the people

  1605. who don't know

  1606. this great

  1607. and awesome God

  1608. are we prepared

  1609. to have people

  1610. in our groups

  1611. to connect with people

  1612. that we don't

  1613. necessarily like

  1614. we don't necessarily

  1615. feel most comfortable

  1616. with but we know

  1617. that the gospel

  1618. calls me to love

  1619. them anyway

  1620. and we're going

  1621. to need grace

  1622. because actually

  1623. that's all that

  1624. can get you

  1625. through that

  1626. but we have someone

  1627. who is so satisfying

  1628. that we say

1629. if we want to put

  1630. him first

  1631. then we will see

  1632. him provide

  1633. and we will see

  1634. us grow

  1635. and we will flourish

  1636. like that tomato

  1637. plant

  1638. because you know

  1639. for a tomato

  1640. plant the greatest

  1641. joy

  1642. that it can have

  1643. is to see someone

  1644. pick its fruit

  1645. and enjoy it

  1646. to see the joy

  1647. that the fruit

  1648. that God works

  1649. in us

  1650. and through us

  1651. by his grace

  1652. as we find

  1653. satisfaction in him

  1654. whatever circumstance

  1655. he brings us

1656. and we need each other

  1657. with that

  1658. because we keep

  1659. forgetting

  1660. but you know

  1661. if we step out

  1662. with his grace

  1663. we will have

  1664. stories to tell

  1665. for generations

  1666. to come

  1667. of the faithfulness

  1668. of God's

  1669. good provision

  1670. God is good

  1671. I don't have to

  1672. look elsewhere

  1673. for comfort

  1674. and that's when

  1675. this journey

  1676. this adventure

  1677. in life

  1678. gets really

  1679. exciting

  1680. and God

  1681. gets the glory

  1682. let's pray

  1683. maybe just stop

  1684. and think

  1685. for a minute

  1686. when was the

  1687. last time

  1688. for the sake

  1689. of the gospel

  1690. I went out

  1691. of my comfort

  1692. zone

  1693. when was the

  1694. last time

  1695. that I had

  1696. to rely

  1697. on God's

  1698. grace

  1699. to get me

  1700. through

  1701. just as you

  1702. think about

  1703. your own

  1704. heart

  1705. and I think

  1706. about my

  1707. own heart

  1708. God

  1709. wants to

  1710. show you

  1711. that he

  1712. is enough

  1713. for you

  1714. and for me

  1715. he wants

  1716. to show

  1717. us

  1718. that in

  1719. whatever

  1720. we're going

  1721. through

  1722. right now

  1723. he is

  1724. enough

  1725. father I

  1726. pray that

  1727. you'd

  1728. forgive me

  1729. where actually

  1730. I live

  1731. for comfort

  1732. often more

  1733. than you

  1734. I procrastinate

  1735. and things

  1736. that I know

  1737. I should

  1738. do

  1739. because I

  1740. don't want

  1741. to do

  1742. the hard

  1743. uncomfortable

  1744. thing

  1745. I stay

  1746. comfortable

  1747. with the

  1748. things that

  1749. are familiar

  1750. to me

  1751. because it

  1752. seems too

  1753. risky to

  1754. go out

  1755. of my

  1756. way

  1757. and yet

  1758. you're a

  1759. God who

  1760. is right

  1761. there

  1762. with us

  1763. calling us

  1764. to step

  1765. out

  1766. I pray

  1767. just show

  1768. us

  1769. for each

  1770. one of

  1771. us

  1772. it's

  1773. going to

  1774. mean

  1775. something

  1776. different

  1777. please

  1778. just show

  1779. us

  1780. what it

  1781. means

  1782. to step

  1783. out

  1784. this

  1785. week

  1786. whether

  1787. it

  1788. means

  1789. we need

  1790. to actually

  1791. just see

  1792. with gratitude

  1793. what you've

  1794. given us

  1795. and lay

  1796. down some

  1797. of those

  1798. desires

  1799. that we

  1800. have

  1801. Lord

  1802. whether

  1803. it's

  1804. we just

  1805. need to

  1806. open

  1807. our

  1808. eyes

  1809. to see

  1810. the

  1811. people

  1812. around

  1813. us

  1814. to see

  1815. that you

  1816. have called

  1817. us to

  1818. love

  1819. to point

  1820. them to

  1821. see

  1822. something

  1823. that's

  1824. more

  1825. satisfying

  1826. than just

  1827. getting a

  1828. new iPhone

  1829. or just

  1830. getting a

  1831. better career

  1832. position

  1833. Lord

  1834. please

  1835. would you

  1836. help us

  1837. to see

  1838. and experience

  1839. just how

  1840. good you

  1841. are

  1842. would this

  1843. church

  1844. be a

  1845. light

  1846. in this

  1847. city

  1848. so that

  1849. people would

  1850. turn to

  1851. you

  1852. pray this

  1853. in your

  1854. name

  1855. amen
