  1. Father, we come before you confessing that often our pride beats us up and hostile spirits,

  2. demons beat us up, that we can feel really guilty about things, Father, that are not

  3. sins at all, that we feel no guilt over things that are sins, and Father, that when we do

  4. things sometimes which are just really, really wrong, it makes us almost want to give up,

  5. Father, to despair. And so, Father, we ask that, and Father, you know as well how sometimes

  6. the well-meaning advice of other Christians just serves to beat us up even more. Father,

  7. you know how many of us here this morning are refugees from legalistic and moralistic churches

  8. that claim to preach grace but end up just beating up its members. So, Father, we ask that

  9. you would gently but deeply pour out your Holy Spirit upon us, gently and deeply pour out your

  10. Holy Spirit upon us, so that we might hear these stark words of yours in Romans 7, that they might

  11. enter into who we are, and that we might understand the great glory of the gospel and how great is your

  12. grace and love towards us. And this we ask in Jesus' name, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  13. Please be seated.

  14. Humanly speaking, the man who was responsible for me becoming an Anglican, not a Christian,

  15. I was already a Christian, but me falling in love with the Anglican way, and humanly speaking,

  16. the man who was responsible for me recognizing that God had called me to be a pastor. And humanly

  17. speaking, the man who was a really important mentor, not only for myself but also for my wife,

  18. I started attending this fellow's church as a single man, and when I left, I was married, had some kids,

  19. and was ordained. And so, humanly speaking, this man was very important to me. And less than a year

  20. after I left the church, he was stripped of his power to minister in the Diocese of Ottawa because

  21. of a long history of affairs, which he had kept secret. And I remember getting the letter in the mail,

  22. and then discovering that not only was he no longer able to function as a pastor in the Diocese of Ottawa,

  23. but that his marriage had broken up. And he had five kids. He had some grandkids at the time as well.

  24. And it was a great shock to Louise and me. And just as I think it was a great shock to many to find out

  25. that this had happened to him. And so, how is it that those types of things can go on? Like, why is it that

  26. in many ways, God used this man in a very, very powerful way in my life, brought a lot of healing

  27. to me in my life as I just watched his example and listened to him pray and heard him teach?

  28. And how is it that something like that could happen in a man like that, and yet at the same time,

  29. there was this other side to him that ended up ruining his relationship with his wife and kids

  30. and ruining his ministry? Romans 7 gets right to the heart of this issue. And so, it would be a great

  31. help to me if you were to open your Bibles to Romans 7. And we're going to look at this text.

  32. It's a text like a lot of Romans, which isn't meant to be read quickly, but it's meant to be sort of read

  33. slowly as we see how Paul shines the light of the gospel and the light of grace into our human

  34. condition, both before we know Jesus and after we know Jesus, as the light of the gospel and the power

  35. of the Holy Spirit shines into who we are as human beings. So, it's Romans chapter 7, and we're beginning

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  36. reading at verse 7. And it's interesting that the Bible is going to actually begin with asking a

  37. question that, and I'm not going to talk about that this, the Bible begins in Romans 7, and then he sort

  38. of asks the similar question, but in different words. It's interesting that Paul asks the question

  39. that many in our culture ask. In fact, like so many people might say that the problem with this

  40. fellow was that Christians are just too anal about moral rules, and that being anal about moral

  41. rules ends up leading to people having moral failings, and that if we just cut people more slack,

  42. they'd get on better. That some people in our culture think that moral rules, especially moral rules

  43. around sexuality, are in fact bad. That they're bad by their very nature, and that if you have a whole

  44. pile of moral rules, especially around sexuality, but also in some other areas, that we shouldn't be

  45. surprised if things happen, if things go south on us. That in fact, there are many people in our culture

  46. who say that moral laws, especially in our culture, moral laws around sexuality, that they actually

  47. cause death. And it might be a real surprise for us to see that the Bible asks those very same

  48. questions that our culture asks. It's not as if we have to go, oh gosh, how on earth do we answer that?

  49. Well, Romans 7, Paul asks those very same questions. Look at Romans 7, 7.

  50. What then shall we say that the law is sin? In other words, that it's evil? By no means. And then

  51. look down at verse 13. Did that which is good, and here he means like moral laws, did that which is good

  52. then bring death? In other words, are moral laws murderers? Do moral laws kill us? And that's,

  53. you just think you were in a postmodern hipster coffee shop, or in a modernist Tim Hortons coffee

  54. shop, listening to these questions being asked, both by people in business suits, and people with

  55. long beards, and people who are working class. It's a very, they're very common questions, and Paul

  56. raises them. Let's go back to verse 7. What then shall we say that the law is sin? By no means.

  57. In other words, he's saying, no way, absolutely not. Yet if it had not been for the law, and here he

  58. means moral commands that come from God, I would not have known sin, for I would not have known what

  59. it is to covet if the law had not said, you shall not covet. Just pause there before we go any further.

  60. It's very, very interesting. In our culture, often when we see the word sin, we think it's referring to sex.

  61. Now, it does refer to certain sexual things which are wrong, but the word is far, far bigger, and it's

  62. very interesting that Paul here chooses the last command of the Ten Commandments, and it is the, all of the

  63. other commands in the Ten Commandments, you can understand them in an external way, as just referring

  64. to behavior. And it's the Tenth Command that doesn't refer to external behavior. It's going to the heart,

  65. like what's going on in our hearts. So, for instance, if I was to say to you how many people here murdered

  66. somebody this morning, hopefully nobody put their hand up. It would actually cause us a bit of a

  67. quandary if you did put your hand up. Probably somebody should go call the police if you put

  68. your hand up and said that this morning before you came to church you murdered somebody, right?

  69. So, it's very, very easy with a lot of the commandments to say, I didn't tell any lies, I haven't murdered

  70. anybody, I didn't steal anything, you know, I didn't bow down to a, you know, a statue of a cow and call it

  71. my God and go all the way through. But coveting envy, jealousy, coveting these, this very, very internal

  72. competitive, proud comparing of your situation with others and wanting others to have, for you to have

  73. more than other people have, this type of insatiable sense. It's the example he uses. He doesn't use where

  74. we often go in our culture or where non-Christians expect Christians to go to give an example of sin,

  75. but he gives an example of coveting, of greed, of gluttony, of envy, of jealousy, of those internal

  76. types of desires which are out of whack. And that's where Paul goes with it. And just as well, before I go

  77. any further on it as well, Paul isn't saying that, well actually, Andrew, could you put up the first

  78. point? And when the living God speaks, he infringes on my desire for absolute sovereignty. When the living

  79. God speaks, he infringes on my desire for absolute sovereignty. That's what Paul's going to get at here.

  80. He's going to talk about something. I'm going to read the rest of it through, the next few verses

  81. through, and I'll give you an example of what he means to show that he has a profound psychological

  82. insight about what happens to human beings when God speaks to them. And so where was I with verse 8?

  83. But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness.

  84. For apart from the law, sin lies dead. I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment

  85. came, sin came alive and I died. The very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me.

  86. For sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me.

  87. So the law is holy and the commandment is holy and righteous and good. So what's Paul trying to get

  88. at here? Well, I'll use first a funny story and then I'll use a different illustration. A couple of

  89. years ago, I was just right here and part of my sermon, trying to open up the Bible, is I shared with

  90. you, the people who were there at the time, you folks, that I'm an introvert, that I'm actually quite a

  91. strong introvert. I like people, but people tire me and I need to recharge my batteries.

  92. My friend Charlie, he's an extrovert. If he said, if somebody said, if Charlie and I were together and

  93. they said, can you want to go to this church and there's 300 people that you've never met before,

  94. I would go, oh no, 300 people that I've never met before. And Charlie would go, oh wow, 300 people

  95. that I've never met before. We can spend the whole day with them? I would just get him charged up. He'd

  96. be so excited. It would be like Christmas for him. And for me, it would be like I've gotten the coal

  97. in my stocking, not the presents. Anyway, so I was just sharing about my introversion and one of the

  98. things about my introversion, at least for me, is that I'm not very huggy. I don't like hugging people.

  99. I mean, I love hugging my wife and my kids and grandkids, but I'm not like huggy. Most of you who

  100. come to the church have probably noticed that I don't go around hugging everybody when they leave

  101. the church. So I was sharing this as part of the sermon. And then after the service, there was a

  102. woman who was a guest and she came up to me and said, oh pastor, that was so brave of you to share

  103. about your introversion. Can I pray for you? And I'm thinking, why? I can always use more pressure.

  104. Can I pray that the Lord will deliver you from being an introvert?

  105. And I didn't want to correct her because, you know, the fact of the matter is I need as much

  106. prayer as I can get, right? I'm never going to tell somebody, don't pray for me. So then I said,

  107. sure. So I'll have to put the Bible down. So I started to get my hands like this. And the next

  108. thing I know, and she was a very sizable woman, she grabbed me with her right arm, put me in a

  109. headlock, pressed me to her bosom like this, her arms shaking. And I'm stuck there trying to figure

  110. out what on earth to do against her bosom. And then she proceeded with the other hand to raise

  111. it and pray loudly over me. The self-confessed introvert who said he didn't like to hug.

  112. Okay. So you can see I'm a very effective public speaker. I had obviously deeply gotten through to

  113. her, something about a whole range of things. Anyway, so about a year after that, I was invited to be

  114. one of the speakers at Atreus Dias weekend for men. And so if you've ever been to Atreus Dias weekend,

  115. there's lots of great things about it, but they love to hug. Good grief. They love to hug. And so

  116. when I, for one of the talks, and it fit into it, I shared this story thinking naively and foolishly

  117. that I was providing comfort to the other introverts in the room. But all it meant was that every man

  118. wanted to hug me for the rest of the weekend. Without fail, probably no man who was there did not take

  119. the moment to come up and say, you don't want me to hug you, do you? And then they'd hug me.

  120. I was really foolish. Okay. So on a very, very light note, what is it about human beings

  121. that if you say something like that, it creates that desire? Like what is it about human beings?

  122. And what is it if many of you might not even have noticed that there's this fake snow type stuff

  123. right here? What if I was to all of a sudden say that you can't touch that snow, that if you touch

  124. that snow, it's a great sin. It's very, very wrong. It's very offensive. Now, several things will happen.

  125. First of all, most of you hadn't even noticed it was there. For the rest of the service, if you thought

  126. I was serious, you'd keep looking at it, wouldn't you? And some of you, just to show me, would say,

  127. hey, George, and then touch it, right? You know who you are. And if you don't know who you are,

  128. your best friend knows who you are, they're probably thinking that exactly describes you.

  129. You would go up and touch it. And others of you would be sneaky. And you might say, Daniel,

  130. go over there and talk to George and get him looking this way. And then you'd go up and touch it,

  131. right? And then there'd be everything in between. There'd be a couple of you, you know who you are,

  132. who probably wouldn't touch it, right? But eventually, if it was there every week,

  133. probably we would touch it. So what is it, okay, that about human beings, that we all know that

  134. that is pretty true and that none of us are... The thing that maybe surprises many of you is why I was

  135. dumb enough to tell the story about the woman hugging me to a room full of men thinking I would

  136. get a different result. And that's why you need to keep praying for me. I can sometimes be remarkably

  137. clueless. So what is it about human beings? So what Paul is saying here is that

  138. moral laws, the one that come from God, not the ones that come from our culture,

  139. our pride, our ego, but true moral laws that reflect the nature and character of God,

  140. that when God speaks them and we recognize them clearly, there springs up within us

  141. an over-preoccupation with thinking about them, and ultimately it reveals within us that we desire

  142. to break them.

  143. Like, the men at the Tres Dias weekend didn't realize that their response showed that they were

  144. fallen and need a savior, because they were just joking. But that's what their response showed.

  145. It showed that they were fallen and need a savior, and that even though many of them had been

  146. Christians for a very, very long time, there was still something within them that desired to transgress.

  147. That's what it shows. Andrew, could you put up this image? And our screen isn't big enough to really,

  148. you know, capture this in a perfect way, but you can get a sort of an idea, and it's sort of,

  149. probably in an ideal world, we'd have a different screen, so this could all just go straight rather

  150. than an angle, but it's what we have to do to get it onto a screen. This image is an image of the story of the Bible.

  151. This gives you a basic understanding of how the entire Bible is written, the overarching story,

  152. the story which is actually present in it. And Genesis 1 and 2, that's the first thing,

  153. is that the whole world is created by God, and he creates it good.

  154. And then the second thing is Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  155. and it describes how,

  156. in Adam,

  157. we desire to be like God,

  158. and rebel against God, because we want to be like God,

  159. and we who are made in the image of God,

  160. and have, in a sense, a role of caring for God's creation,

  161. that we become bent, we become broken.

  162. The image of God isn't taken away from us, but we become bent.

  163. And as Genesis, as the rest of the Bible will show us,

  164. that there's not a single aspect of ourselves

  165. that isn't touched by the fall,

  166. that isn't bent in some small way.

  167. It's not telling us that human beings are evil,

  168. it's telling us that every single aspect of what it means to be human,

  169. and if through poetry and science we discover other things about what it means to be human,

  170. that anything that we discover about what it means to be human

  171. is touched by this fall,

  172. that it's bent slightly.

  173. And then Genesis chapter 4, up until the end of Malachi,

    Genesis 4 chapter mention

  174. is the next section.

  175. And it's a way to understand all of the Old Testament,

  176. is that God sees us, having created us good,

  177. and to have fellowship and communion with Him,

  178. He sees that we're bent and we can't save ourselves.

  179. And for the rest of the Old Testament,

  180. Genesis chapter 4 to Malachi 4,

    Genesis 4 chapter mention

  181. it's a combination of promise and preparation.

  182. Promising that God,

  183. God promising to human beings,

  184. He does it gradually,

  185. He does it through wisdom literature,

  186. He does it through laws,

  187. He does it through poetry,

  188. He does it through mystical visions,

  189. He does it in lots of different literary genres,

  190. God speaks in lots of different literary genres,

  191. over a wide period of time,

  192. but it's all both preparing people for the Messiah

  193. and promising the Messiah.

  194. And then you see up there,

  195. it's Jesus,

  196. and that means God's kept His promise.

  197. That's in some ways the whole heart of Advent,

  198. because the heart of Advent is that God has kept His promises

  199. in sending His Son to be born in Bethlehem

  200. and to die upon the cross,

  201. and that Jesus will come again a second time.

  202. God keeps His promise in the person of Jesus.

  203. And we all live in 2015,

  204. we live in the already not yet.

  205. We live in the time between God keeping His promise

  206. to call to a people Himself again

  207. and to redeem them through Jesus

  208. and what He did on the cross,

  209. the gift of the Holy Spirit,

  210. the guarantee that we have a standing before God

  211. which is right,

  212. which is given to us as a gift by Jesus

  213. that nothing can take away,

  214. yet at the same time,

  215. obviously the world is still full of evil and rebellion.

  216. There's still evil and rebellion within us,

  217. within you and me,

  218. and we wait for the end when Jesus comes.

  219. And that's basically most of the New Testament.

  220. And the end is what's described a little bit today

  221. in the Gospel reading,

  222. in the book of Revelation at the end.

  223. It's when Jesus comes again,

  224. the living and the dead are judged,

  225. and the new heaven and the new earth is created.

  226. And that's also the end is also the beginning.

  227. And this is not only the overarching story of the Bible.

  228. The Bible claims that this is real,

  229. that God really is there.

  230. He really does speak.

  231. Jesus really did come.

  232. He really did die upon the cross.

  233. There's historical evidence of His existence

  234. and of His death,

  235. and even historical evidence of His resurrection.

  236. And that this is not only the story of the Bible,

  237. it's the story of the human race.

  238. That's the claim of the Bible.

  239. It's the story of the human race.

  240. It's within this story

  241. that we can understand who we are as human beings.

  242. We can understand our longings and our yearnings,

  243. our dreams and our hopes,

  244. and we can understand those things about us

  245. that terrify us.

  246. So, Andrew, could you put up A,

  247. in good Canadian fashion?

  248. I'm going to keep on saying A throughout the service.

  249. This is what the book of Romans

  250. is trying to communicate with us.

  251. that until we see Him face to face,

  252. every follower of Jesus lives in the already,

  253. not yet,

  254. with a divided and contradictory self.

  255. Every follower,

  256. until we see Jesus face to face,

  257. that's 1 John 2,

  258. every follower of Jesus lives in the already,

  259. not yet,

  260. with a divided and contradictory self.

  261. We don't live at the end

  262. or the beginning.

  263. We aren't perfect.

  264. Read 2 Corinthians 4 and 5,

  265. the treasure of the gospel,

  266. the fact that the Holy Spirit

  267. indwells the believer,

  268. that we have entered into Jesus

  269. and that Jesus has entered into us,

  270. that's in a sense the already,

  271. something that we'll just get more of in heaven.

  272. But at the same time,

  273. we live in the not yet.

  274. And as part of that not yet,

  275. we aren't perfect.

  276. We're not,

  277. there's still parts within us

  278. that just still are in rebellion against God.

  279. And that's what Paul,

  280. that's what the Bible is trying

  281. to help us to understand.

  282. And it's really,

  283. really,

  284. really important

  285. because,

  286. you know,

  287. I've talked

  288. and I've heard so many Christians

  289. and maybe,

  290. I don't know,

  291. Lord have mercy,

  292. when I,

  293. maybe I've been guilty

  294. of some of this stuff as well,

  295. but often I would just have this sense

  296. of not knowing what to speak about it

  297. as I would hear somebody speak up

  298. and say

  299. that the problem that you have with your life

  300. is a lack of willpower.

  301. Well, I mean,

  302. on one hand,

  303. every human being has some problems

  304. with willpower.

  305. I don't,

  306. you know,

  307. if I could go back in time,

  308. I wouldn't have eaten those potato chips

  309. last night while I watched the movie,

  310. you know?

  311. We all have problems with willpower.

  312. But, you know,

  313. we might say to a Christian,

  314. and it's a really terrible thing

  315. for Christians who struggle with depression,

  316. Christians who struggle with mental illness,

  317. Christians who struggle

  318. with some deep type of brokenness within them,

  319. and just to be told,

  320. all you need is more willpower.

  321. You're just not trying hard enough.

  322. If you were trying hard enough,

  323. you wouldn't be doing this.

  324. It's all about trying.

  325. It's all about willpower.

  326. And then there's others who say,

  327. oh,

  328. if you just thought better,

  329. if you just thought better thoughts,

  330. if you just memorized these attitudes

  331. from John Maxwell

  332. about how to have a positive life,

  333. if you just read more Zig Ziglar

  334. and had little positive sayings

  335. on your fridge,

  336. you would have a better life.

  337. And then there's others who say

  338. that there's nothing at all

  339. to do with any of that stuff.

  340. You need a special anointing.

  341. And you need to have a special anointing

  342. that goes along with an experience

  343. of emotional breakdown and turmoil.

  344. And if you just have this moment of brokenness

  345. with a great emotion,

  346. then you will live a life of victory.

  347. If you have the willpower,

  348. you will live a life of victory.

  349. If you have these positive thoughts in your head,

  350. you will live a life of victory.

  351. If you just know the right rituals,

  352. if you just know the right rules,

  353. you will have a life of victory.

  354. But that's the normal Christian life.

  355. The normal Christian life

  356. is a life of victory.

  357. How many of us have heard speakers

  358. and Christians who tell us

  359. these types of things?

  360. Or they say the problem is

  361. that you have demons in you.

  362. The reason you can't stop smoking

  363. is not because tobacco

  364. is more addictive than crack cocaine.

  365. It's because you have a demon.

  366. Let us cast that demon out.

  367. And then lo and behold,

  368. the poor beat up Christian

  369. who says to himself,

  370. I've tried my willpower.

  371. It doesn't work.

  372. And I, gosh, I've had

  373. the demon of cigarettes

  374. cast out of me 18 times.

  375. I still smoke.

  376. Maybe I'm not a Christian at all.

  377. Maybe I'm just going to hell.

  378. And it's for those of us

  379. who labor under this

  380. that Paul continues on

  381. in verse 13.

  382. And one of the things about this,

  383. when I,

  384. one of the academic commentaries

  385. that I consulted prior to this,

  386. there's 10 different ways

  387. of understanding Romans 7.

  388. I'm not going to bore,

  389. I can't even remember them.

  390. I'm not going to bore you with them.

  391. I'm going to read it

  392. in the most simple,

  393. straightforward way

  394. because the shocking thing is,

  395. is that in these verses 7 through 12,

  396. Paul uses the past tense,

  397. the form of the past tense.

  398. In verses 14 on,

  399. he uses the present tense.

  400. This is Paul.

  401. He has been a Christian

  402. for 25 years,

  403. 20 to 25 years.

  404. God has used him.

  405. The Holy Spirit has used him

  406. in a way which is far more powerful,

  407. not put any of you down,

  408. than any of you who are here

  409. because God actually uses him

  410. to write scripture.

  411. And God uses him

  412. to plant churches

  413. as an evangelist.

  414. God uses him

  415. that even when he gets

  416. beaten up and thrown in jail,

  417. still he shares the gospel.

  418. And listen to how Paul speaks.

  419. Verse 13 and then following.

  420. Did that which is good,

  421. which is moral laws,

  422. then bring death to me

  423. by no means.

  424. It was sin producing death in me

  425. through what is good,

  426. in order that sin

  427. might be shown to be sin,

  428. and through the commandment

  429. might become sinful

  430. beyond measure.

  431. For we know that the law

  432. is spiritual,

  433. but I am of the flesh

  434. sold under sin.

  435. Now just pause here

  436. before we go any farther.

  437. Those of you who maybe

  438. have been reading ahead

  439. or remember what Ken just read

  440. a few moments ago,

  441. the language seems way too stark.

  442. Andrew, could you put up

  443. this next point for me, please?

  444. Here's the problem.

  445. I'm not smart enough

  446. to say this,

  447. and if you disagree with this,

  448. it's Psalm 36, verse 2.

    Psalms 36:2

  449. Take it up with God.

  450. I flatter myself too much

  451. to detect or hate my own sin.

  452. That is profoundly wise.

  453. Even if you don't believe

  454. that the Bible

  455. is God's word written,

  456. like I do,

  457. you have to say,

  458. this is profoundly wise.

  459. I flatter myself too much

  460. to detect or hate my own sin.

  461. And if you say,

  462. well, actually,

  463. you know, I'm pretty good.

  464. I don't sin.

  465. Wow!

  466. All you've done

  467. is proved how much

  468. you flatter yourself.

  469. Because your friends,

  470. your boss,

  471. your neighbors,

  472. will not agree

  473. with your self-assessment,

  474. your kids,

  475. or your parents.

  476. And so the problem is,

  477. is that all of us

  478. flatter ourselves

  479. too much to detect

  480. or hate our own sin.

  481. And so that when we read

  482. these next things

  483. in Romans 7,

  484. we recoil.

  485. We want to say,

  486. it's too extreme,

  487. it's too hard.

  488. We want to recoil from it.

  489. And the reason

  490. we want to recoil from it

  491. is because you and I

  492. flatter ourselves too much

  493. to detect or hate

  494. our own sin.

  495. Including myself in this.

  496. It's jarring.

  497. Andrew, could you put up

  498. A again?

  499. Just remember,

  500. until we see him

  501. face to face,

  502. every follower of Jesus

  503. lives in the already-not-yet

  504. with a divided

  505. and contradictory self.

  506. That's what Paul

  507. is teaching us.

  508. And when you have

  509. a divided

  510. and contradictory self,

  511. Paul isn't saying

  512. that you never use

  513. willpower.

  514. He's never saying

  515. that we don't have

  516. breakthroughs.

  517. He's not saying

  518. that we shouldn't ask

  519. for more of the Holy Spirit.

  520. In fact,

  521. Romans 8 is the profound

  522. after-Christmas break

  523. of Romans.

  524. We're going to talk

  525. Romans 8,

  526. three weeks in Romans 8.

  527. It's the profound text

  528. about the power

  529. of the Holy Spirit

  530. in the Christian's life.

  531. And Paul's not going to say

  532. that there's not things

  533. you should know.

  534. He's not going to say

  535. any of those things,

  536. but he's going to say

  537. that if Christians

  538. use these things

  539. as sticks

  540. to beat up other Christians,

  541. trying to get us

  542. to believe

  543. that the normal Christian life

  544. is a life of victory

  545. where we do not sin,

  546. you have not understood

  547. the Scriptures,

  548. you have not understood

  549. Romans chapter 7,

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  550. because a divided

  551. and contradictory self

  552. is exactly what it means.

  553. Until we see him

  554. face to face,

  555. there is always going

  556. to be a struggle

  557. with sin.

  558. And sin will continue

  559. to shock us

  560. and surprise us.

  561. And we will,

  562. as we see in a moment,

  563. we'll ask ourselves,

  564. why on earth

  565. did I do that?

  566. How could I do that

  567. given what I know

  568. about Jesus?

  569. Struggle with sin

  570. is the normal

  571. Christian life.

  572. To not struggle

  573. with sin

  574. means that you've

  575. surrendered to it.

  576. not everyone.

  577. I mean,

  578. some of us

  579. are just tempted

  580. for some things

  581. and not the others.

  582. I've never been

  583. tempted

  584. to same-sex attraction,

  585. and that's not something

  586. I can be proud about.

  587. Anybody who's proud about it,

  588. that doesn't mean anything.

  589. It just means

  590. you don't have

  591. that temptation.

  592. Some in our midst

  593. have that temptation.

  594. It's a real temptation

  595. that they live with.

  596. And that person

  597. who has maybe

  598. the same-sex attraction,

  599. they don't have

  600. maybe your problem

  601. with pride

  602. or with debt

  603. because you spend money

  604. to fill voids

  605. in your lives

  606. and they don't,

  607. or maybe they don't

  608. have your problem

  609. with telling the truth

  610. or we could go on

  611. and on and on and on.

  612. Just because,

  613. I mean,

  614. it just really is the case

  615. that there are just

  616. some temptations

  617. that no human,

  618. that a particular human being

  619. doesn't have.

  620. They're just not there.

  621. I've stayed in hotels

  622. beside casinos.

  623. I've never gone in.

  624. I have no temptation

  625. to gamble whatsoever.

  626. Absolutely none.

  627. But I'm not saying that

  628. because it shows

  629. there's something

  630. excellent about me.

  631. I'm not going to start

  632. telling you all the things

  633. I am tempted to,

  634. by the way.

  635. And it's one of the reasons

  636. I,

  637. but it's just not there.

  638. And I shouldn't,

  639. it's nothing to be proud about.

  640. It's just not there

  641. for some reason.

  642. I have others.

  643. I have a long,

  644. long, long list.

  645. I mean,

  646. here's the thing.

  647. The fact is,

  648. if God showed up

  649. in our midst,

  650. an angel showed up

  651. in our midst

  652. and all of a sudden

  653. froze all of us

  654. to our seat

  655. and all of a sudden

  656. the finger of God

  657. would touch a part

  658. in our forehead

  659. and there'd be

  660. a pop-up screen

  661. that comes from our soul,

  662. who we are,

  663. and it pops up

  664. and it lists

  665. the things

  666. that we're most tempted to

  667. and the things

  668. that we succumb to

  669. in terms of sin

  670. the most

  671. and it just gives

  672. the top 100.

  673. There'd be nobody here

  674. who would only

  675. goes up to five

  676. or down to five.

  677. Everybody would have

  678. a list that goes up

  679. to 100

  680. and our list

  681. would be different.

  682. It would just be different.

  683. When I used to speak

  684. in settings before

  685. when we were dealing

  686. with a lot of issues

  687. around same-sex issues,

  688. I would say

  689. that one of the

  690. great problems

  691. that Christians

  692. have around that

  693. is Christians talk

  694. as if same-sex attraction

  695. is number one.

  696. Where's that in the Bible?

  697. Not in the Bible.

  698. That's our culture.

  699. In fact,

  700. it might even be

  701. for a same-sex attracted person

  702. that when they do

  703. that thing in their forehead,

  704. their same-sex attraction

  705. isn't number one.

  706. It might be number nine.

  707. That the greater sin

  708. that they struggle with

  709. is maybe to do with pride

  710. or who knows what it is.

  711. I don't know what it is.

  712. But that...

  713. It's what the Bible

  714. is trying to teach us here, friends.

  715. Let's read verse 14 again.

  716. For we know that the law

  717. is spiritual

  718. and what it means is

  719. that means here

  720. is that it comes from God.

  721. But I am of the flesh

  722. sold under sin

  723. for I do not understand

  724. my own actions.

  725. For I do not do what I want

  726. but I do the very thing I hate.

  727. Just pause there.

  728. Isn't that a profoundly wise statement?

  729. Even if you don't believe

  730. the Bible is God's word written,

  731. this is profoundly true.

  732. I was sharing on Parliament Hill

  733. when I was speaking there

  734. to the Parliament Hill

  735. Christian Fellowship on Friday.

  736. Here's a thing to understand.

  737. And virtually no man

  738. wakes up and says,

  739. I think I'm going to be a jerk

  740. to my wife today.

  741. Yep.

  742. I think I'm going to take

  743. every opportunity imaginable

  744. to be a jerk to my wife.

  745. Like nobody wakes up...

  746. Virtually no man

  747. wakes up thinking that.

  748. Like I said, virtually.

  749. Okay?

  750. Sometimes we wake up

  751. really grumpy and ornery

  752. and that is what we say.

  753. Okay?

  754. Or some people say.

  755. And no wife wakes up and says,

  756. I'm going to spend my whole day

  757. frustrating my husband.

  758. I think that's what I'll do.

  759. I'm going to contradict him,

  760. make his life miserable.

  761. I'm going to nag him,

  762. bug him.

  763. That's what I think

  764. I'll do today.

  765. That's number 1, 2, 3, 4, 5,

  766. 6, 7, 8, 9, 10

  767. on my to-do list.

  768. No wife wakes up

  769. thinking that.

  770. Virtually none.

  771. The experience of people

  772. is verse 15.

  773. I do not understand

  774. my own actions

  775. for I do not do

  776. what I want

  777. but I do the very thing

  778. I hate.

  779. Now if I do

  780. what I do not want

  781. I agree with the law

  782. that it is good.

  783. Andrew, could you put up

  784. the next point for us please?

  785. Here's a really, really

  786. important thing

  787. about what Paul's saying

  788. and you'll notice it

  789. in his language

  790. but it's really, really, really,

  791. really, really important.

  792. One of the problems with

  793. like in our laws

  794. there's problems

  795. that if you're drunk

  796. you're not as responsible.

  797. There's increasingly

  798. this idea

  799. that if you

  800. have certain types

  801. of other things

  802. that are drives

  803. or wounds in your past

  804. you're not as responsible.

  805. There are people

  806. who've gone through therapy

  807. and the result

  808. of the therapy

  809. is that they can have

  810. a big smile on their face

  811. because they now know

  812. that everything that's wrong

  813. in their life

  814. is somebody else's fault.

  815. But the Bible here

  816. is very, very clear.

  817. My divided

  818. and contradictory nature

  819. does not let me

  820. off the hook

  821. for the wrong that I do

  822. and the good

  823. that I fail to do.

  824. My divided

  825. and contradictory nature

  826. does not let me

  827. off the hook

  828. for the wrong that I do

  829. and the good

  830. that I fail to do.

  831. It doesn't let me

  832. off the hook.

  833. But just remember

  834. throughout all of this

  835. if you could put up

  836. A again, Andrew

  837. until we see him

  838. face to face

  839. every follower

  840. of Jesus

  841. lives in the already

  842. not yet

  843. with the divided

  844. and contradictory self.

  845. Let's just

  846. continue reading

  847. and let's do

  848. verse 16 again.

  849. Now if I do

  850. what I want

  851. sorry

  852. now if

  853. I need better glasses

  854. for if I do

  855. what I want

  856. do not want

  857. I agree

  858. that the law

  859. is good

  860. so now

  861. it is no longer

  862. I who do it

  863. but sin

  864. that dwells

  865. in me.

  866. So now

  867. it is no longer

  868. I who do it

  869. but sin

  870. that dwells

  871. within me.

  872. Is this just

  873. contradicting

  874. what you just said

  875. George

  876. or is this

  877. I'm a bit

  878. confused.

  879. Here's

  880. I'm not going

  881. to be able

  882. to prove it

  883. to you

  884. I'm just going

  885. to have to make

  886. a bit of a statement

  887. about this

  888. but it's

  889. one of the problems

  890. that we have

  891. when we bring

  892. our cultural

  893. assumptions

  894. and we just

  895. read one part

  896. of the Bible

  897. but let me tell you

  898. if you study

  899. the Bible

  900. especially the Old Testament

  901. but if you study

  902. Genesis to Malachi

  903. and then if you study

  904. the New Testament

  905. you'll see that

  906. the Bible knows

  907. that there's obviously

  908. things that come

  909. in pairs

  910. and that the number

  911. two exists

  912. but the Bible

  913. rejects all

  914. dualism.

  915. Andrew if you could

  916. put up this next

  917. point.

  918. It's really important

  919. for us to understand

  920. and listen to this

  921. language here.

  922. The Bible is not

  923. saying that I am

  924. not divided

  925. between the divine

  926. and the earthly

  927. the higher and the lower

  928. the good and evil

  929. spiritual and physical

  930. mind and matter

  931. I could add

  932. yin and yang

  933. I am not a soul

  934. trapped in a body

  935. I am not an angel

  936. trapped on this

  937. human plane

  938. I am not a God

  939. self trapped

  940. in physicality.

  941. The Bible

  942. completely and utterly

  943. rejects all of that

  944. any type of dualism

  945. that mind is good

  946. and matter is bad

  947. that the spirit

  948. is good

  949. and the body

  950. is evil

  951. that the higher

  952. is good

  953. and that the lower

  954. it rejects all of that

  955. all the way through it

  956. in fact

  957. he's here trying

  958. to make this claim

  959. that I am redeemed

  960. fallen

  961. in the already

  962. not yet.

  963. You see the fact

  964. of the matter is

  965. is that God

  966. claims

  967. every square

  968. inch

  969. of reality

  970. every

  971. molecule

  972. is maintained

  973. in existence

  974. by him

  975. everything

  976. was created

  977. by him

  978. except evil

  979. which is a type

  980. of unmaking

  981. or breaking

  982. it's all

  983. sustained

  984. by him

  985. it will all

  986. be redeemed

  987. by him

  988. and I have

  989. a spirit

  990. and a soul

  991. and I have

  992. a body

  993. but I am

  994. an indivisible

  995. unity

  996. of spirit

  997. or soul

  998. and body

  999. an indivisible

  1000. unity

  1001. to divide

  1002. that

  1003. is what

  1004. Christians

  1005. understand

  1006. death

  1007. to be

  1008. and so

  1009. the Bible

  1010. here is not

  1011. so it's easy

1012. for us to slip in

  1013. what Paul is doing

  1014. is he's using

  1015. stark imagery

  1016. he's using a

  1017. multiplication

  1018. of different

  1019. types of images

  1020. to capture

  1021. so that you know

  1022. maybe if you're

  1023. coming from one

  1024. a certain type

  1025. of pagan

  1026. perspective

  1027. or a Jewish

  1028. perspective

  1029. that you can

  1030. get the point

  1031. because he's

  1032. using lots

  1033. of different

  1034. analogies

  1035. to try to

  1036. capture this

  1037. fact of a

  1038. divided and

  1039. contradictory

  1040. self

  1041. but I have

  1042. one self

  1043. not two

  1044. I have one

  1045. body

  1046. not two

  1047. and the fall

  1048. affects my

  1049. mind

  1050. it isn't as if

  1051. somehow or

  1052. another

  1053. it's just my

  1054. body

  1055. that's

  1056. you know

  1057. don't be

  1058. mad at me

  1059. for stealing

  1060. that thing

  1061. in the store

  1062. it was just

  1063. my hand

  1064. my mind

  1065. is thinking

  1066. pure thoughts

  1067. no it's

  1068. nothing ridiculous

  1069. like that

  1070. our body

  1071. is God's

  1072. our mind

  1073. is God's

  1074. our sexuality

  1075. is God's

  1076. our money

  1077. is God's

  1078. God claims

  1079. all our

  1080. memories

  1081. our past

  1082. our dreams

  1083. our longings

  1084. our yearnings

  1085. everything that

  1086. makes me

  1087. me

  1088. he claims

  1089. and it is

  1090. redeemed

  1091. in Jesus

  1092. but there

  1093. is a

  1094. power

  1095. and force

  1096. still within

  1097. me

  1098. because

  1099. I live

  1100. in the

  1101. already

  1102. not yet

  1103. and I

  1104. will not

  1105. be whole

  1106. and free

  1107. until I

  1108. see Jesus

  1109. face to

  1110. face

  1111. Andrew

  1112. could you

  1113. put up

  1114. A again

  1115. please

  1116. last time

  1117. I'll put

  1118. it up

  1119. until we

  1120. see him

  1121. face to

  1122. face

  1123. every

  1124. follower

  1125. of Jesus

  1126. lives

  1127. in the

  1128. already

  1129. not yet

  1130. with a

  1131. divided

  1132. and contradictory

  1133. self

  1134. let's

  1135. continue

  1136. reading

  1137. from

  1138. verse

  1139. 17

  1140. we

  1141. see

  1142. where

  1143. Paul's

  1144. going

  1145. with

  1146. all

  1147. of

  1148. this

  1149. I

  1150. have

  1151. to

  1152. sort of

  1153. go

  1154. quicker

  1155. because

  1156. of

  1157. the

  1158. time

  1159. sin

  1160. that

  1161. dwells

  1162. within

  1163. me

  1164. I

  1165. am

  1166. divided

  1167. and

  1168. contradictory

  1169. in

  1170. my

  1171. mind

  1172. my

  1173. body

  1174. my

  1175. sexuality

  1176. my

  1177. attachment

  1178. to

  1179. money

  1180. my

  1181. ambition

  1182. every

  1183. single

  1184. part

  1185. of

  1186. me

  1187. is

  1188. divided

  1189. and

  1190. contradictory

  1191. so I

  1192. find it

  1193. to be

  1194. a law

  1195. that when

  1196. I want

  1197. to do

  1198. right

  1199. verse 21

  1200. evil

  1201. lies

  1202. close

  1203. at

  1204. hand

  1205. for I

  1206. delight

  1207. in

  1208. the law

  1209. of God

  1210. in my

  1211. inner

  1212. being

  1213. at the

  1214. very

  1215. center

  1216. of who

  1217. I

  1218. am

  1219. where

  1220. Jesus

  1221. sits

  1222. on the

  1223. throne

  1224. but I

  1225. see

  1226. in

  1227. my

  1228. members

  1229. another

  1230. law

  1231. waging

  1232. war

  1233. against

  1234. the

  1235. law

  1236. of

  1237. my

  1238. mind

  1239. and

  1240. making

  1241. me

  1242. captive

  1243. to

  1244. the

  1245. law

  1246. of

  1247. sin

  1248. that

  1249. dwells

  1250. in

  1251. my

  1252. members

  1253. where's

  1254. Paul

  1255. going

  1256. with

  1257. this

  1258. profound

  1259. verse

  1260. wretched

  1261. man

  1262. that I

  1263. am

  1264. who

  1265. will

  1266. deliver

  1267. me

  1268. from

  1269. this

  1270. body

  1271. of

  1272. death

  1273. thanks

  1274. be

  1275. to

  1276. God

  1277. through

  1278. Jesus

  1279. Christ

  1280. our

  1281. Lord

  1282. so

  1283. then I

  1284. myself

  1285. serve

  1286. the

  1287. law

  1288. of

  1289. God

  1290. with

  1291. my

  1292. mind

  1293. but

  1294. with

  1295. my

  1296. flesh

  1297. I

  1298. serve

  1299. the

  1300. law

  1301. of

  1302. sin

  1303. Andrew

  1304. could

  1305. you

  1306. put

  1307. up

  1308. the

  1309. almost

  1310. final

  1311. point

  1312. wretched

  1313. person

  1314. that I

  1315. am

  1316. who

  1317. can

  1318. deliver

  1319. me

  1320. from

  1321. this

  1322. body

  1323. of

  1324. death

  1325. thanks

  1326. be

  1327. to

  1328. God

  1329. through

  1330. Jesus

  1331. Christ

  1332. our

  1333. Lord

  1334. Hoboken

  1335. God

  1336. God

  1337. God

  1338. God's

  1339. grace

  1340. will

  1341. work

  1342. on

  1343. my

  1344. sexuality

  1345. and

  1346. it

  1347. will

  1348. work

  1349. on

  1350. my

  1351. will

  1352. power

  1353. and

  1354. it

  1355. will

  1356. work

  1357. on

  1358. my

  1359. memories

  1360. and

  1361. it

  1362. will

  1363. work

  1364. on

  1365. the

  1366. images

  1367. in

  1368. my

  1369. head

  1370. and

  1371. it

  1372. will

  1373. work

  1374. on

1375. my thinking and it will work on the furniture of my brain and it will work on my habits and the

1376. grace of God through the power of the Holy Spirit and God's Word written will work on how I

1377. understand my relationship to the state and how I understand my relationship to male or female and

1378. I can go on and on and on and on and on the Holy Spirit that's why we have hope in this it's the

1379. already not yet for a Christian right but it's always going to keep bringing us back to saying

1380. that's why I need a Savior in a sense as the Holy Spirit moves and works more deeply in our lives

1381. not only do we do start to see some victory over sin and we really do and we really do see healing

1382. but we often discover new areas of our lives that were broken by sin that we didn't even know existed

1383. and one almost final point Andrew could you put up point number six a follower of Jesus's eternal

1384. standing with God cannot be shaken but our walk with Jesus needs daily attention and daily grace

1385. a follower of Jesus's eternal standing with God cannot be shaken but our walk with Jesus needs

1386. daily attention and daily grace when we call out to Jesus to be our Savior and our Lord we he really

1387. takes our hands he really redeems us he really makes us born again the final word about God we can

1388. from God about us we can now know but in the already not yet until we see Jesus face to face I have a

1389. divided and contradictory self and knowing the gospel the more I'm gripped by the gospel the more I'm able

1390. to be have before me a model of how it is that I should live as I'm grounded and gripped by the gospel

1391. gripped by the gospel and grounded in the gospel there begins to be a process to see yes the Bible knows this

1392. about me and maybe by myself and maybe with the help of a brother or a sister or a congregation I can start to

1393. look at how it is that I have such a problem with selfishness there's such a problem with anger in my

1394. relationships or such a problem with twisted ambition and as the gospel grips us and as we're ground in

1395. the get in the gospel as we understand how our standing before God that is dependent not upon our

1396. accomplishments but upon his right standing with God given to the lowest and worst believer and the best

1397. as a free gift of grace his right standing with God is now mine when I put my faith and trust in Jesus

1398. and nothing will take that away and as this gift of righteousness grips us as it becomes the ground of

1399. our being we have a model for how to live we get nudged into new ways of living we get drawn with the

1400. problem of seeing the promise of seeing Jesus face to face to new ways of living and we can look at

1401. those roots of our behavior and our contradictory and divided self as we give up the whole process of

1402. self-righteousness and self-justification even as people criticize us we can say yes I am a man who

1403. needs prayer and I don't think I need to be healed of introversion but introversion doesn't excuse all of us the

1404. way I live and there are things in my introversion that needs healing just as extroverts need some

1405. healing in their extroversion and you see it's within this context you're gonna understand everything

1406. in the Anglican liturgy the heart of the Anglican liturgy is to get you to give your life to Jesus but

1407. day by day there's going to be new things that come to our attention that we need to say Jesus I'm sorry

1408. for that and give me grace that's what the confession is all about not that you say confession

1409. 53 100 times you go to heaven nothing to do with that it's your daily walk

1410. and we'll skip the other images let's just go to Romans 1 could you all stand please

1411. could you say this with me Romans 1 16 and 17 for I am not ashamed of the gospel for it is the power

1412. of God for salvation to everyone who believes to the Jew first and also to the Greek for in the right

1413. the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith as it is written the righteous shall live by

1414. faith a power of God for salvation that ordinary people like you and me can receive and then we begin

1415. to live in the already not yet until we've given our lives to Jesus God is just patiently hoping that

1416. we respond to his call his call on our lives to give our lives to Jesus but when we put our hands in

1417. Jesus's hands we receive a righteousness that comes from God and now we live by faith let's bow our heads in

1418. prayer father if there are any here who have not yet given their lives to Jesus may this be the day

1419. may this be the moment where they call out to you not with fancy words or that they have to repeat

1420. after me but may they just say father Lord Jesus Christ what George was talking about today I need I am

1421. that wretched man I need you as my Lord and Savior and father may those who have not yet made such a call

1422. may they say that today and father for those of us who are here we still have contradictory and

1423. divided selves you know father how things like anger resentment or unforgiveness or wounds from our

1424. past and you know father the power they still have in our lives we call out to you father that you might

1425. make us disciples of Jesus gripped by the gospel who are being freed by your holy spirit and by your word

1426. there are only people who are being admired by the gospel our Father if there is any other means

1427. should have been did we make us better as if we are subject to God and in our lives we ask kamera

1428. we speak to you that we offer you who are seeing Jesus

1429. in their lives in their lives look at all of usIT offices when they stop we just said

1430. pour it out father we might be disciples of Jesus gripped by the gospel pour out your holy spirit

1431. in this we ask in Jesus name and all the people said amen

  1432. Amen.
