  1. Good morning, Watermark.

  2. For those of you who don't know me, my name is Eric,

  3. and I am one of the guys here on staff.

  4. It's great to be here with you today.

  5. I want to start off by sharing with you a scene from one of my favorite movies.

  6. I'm sure many of you have seen it.

  7. It's called The Fellowship of the Ring.

  8. Anyone seen it?

  9. Yes?

  10. Okay.

  11. So in The Fellowship of the Ring, there's this scene, sort of close to the start.

  12. They're in Rivendell, the home of Elrond.

  13. It's okay if you don't know what these words mean.

  14. But they have this meeting.

  15. They have a gathering because they have a problem.

  16. There's a ring, a ring of power.

  17. And this ring is so powerful that whoever has it will be able to rule the world,

  18. but it always draws that person towards darkness, and it is dangerous.

  19. And they know that it is dangerous, and they know that this ring needs to be destroyed.

  20. And they know that the job of destroying this one ring is far bigger than any one of them individually can accomplish.

  21. And so they form this group of nine that will go to destroy the ring.

  22. They call this group the Fellowship of the Ring.

  23. And they form this Fellowship of the Ring to accomplish a mission that they have that is far too big for any one of them to accomplish on their own.

  24. And I think when we look at the church, a lot of times we feel like, oh, you know, like, God saved us, and then he didn't want us to be bored,

  25. so he gave us something to do to keep us from being bored for the rest of our lives.

  26. And that's, you know, missions and evangelism and telling other people about him.

  27. But I think when you look at the story of the Bible, it's actually the other way around.

  28. It's a lot more like in the Fellowship of the Ring, that there is a mission that God has that is huge.

  29. It's too huge for any one of us to accomplish on our own.

  30. And so to accomplish his mission, God forms us as his people to go out and accomplish his mission in the world.

  31. He forms us as a fellowship to go out and accomplish his mission in the world and sends us out, just like the Fellowship of the Ring is sent out to destroy the ring.

  32. He sends us out into the world to tell others about him and to share about how amazing he is.

  33. We call this mission, life on mission.

  34. And last week, we started a sermon series on this idea of mission, looking at it from the book of Isaiah.

  35. Isaiah, we saw last week that God sends out his call to the thirsty, to those who are looking for something to satisfy them.

  36. God says, if you are looking for something to satisfy, come to me.

  37. All who are thirsty, come to the waters and drink and find satisfaction.

  38. And God calls us, if we are Christians here today, God calls us to go out to those in the world who are thirsty

  39. and to offer them satisfaction in him.

  40. And today we're going to continue talking about mission.

  41. And we're going to look at it from another perspective, another group that God wants us to call out to.

  42. And this group is the outsiders.

  43. And so we're going to look at it, three points.

  44. Number one, a call to missional holiness.

  45. Number two, the mission of God.

  46. And number three, a call to the outsiders.

  47. We're going to start out with the call to missional holiness.

  48. If we look at the first couple of verses of chapter 56, it says,

  49. Keep justice and do righteousness, and soon my salvation will come and my deliverance be revealed.

  50. Blessed is the man who does this and the son of man who holds it fast,

  51. who keeps the Sabbath, not profaning it, and keeps his hand from doing any evil.

  52. Keep justice, do righteousness, keep the Sabbath, don't do any evil.

  53. I think for a lot of us, when we look at commands like this,

  54. there's this part of us inside that sort of bristles at this.

  55. Because we, you know, we like God, we like Jesus, we like this message of love that he has.

  56. But the idea of him telling us what to do in the 21st century can feel a little regressive to some of us.

  57. It can feel a little oppressive to some of us.

  58. Like, who is God to come in and tell me how to live my life?

  59. Maybe we feel like John Lennon when he said, you know, Jesus was all right,

  60. but his disciples were thick and ordinary.

  61. It's them twisting it that ruins it for me.

  62. Basically, you know, this message that God wants us to love one another, that's great, I like that.

  63. This whole stuff about having to obey him and live our life by a standard that he sets for us, not so much.

  64. If we could just get back to that pure message that Jesus had of loving one another without having to obey,

  65. then everything would be great.

  66. But right here it says that he wants us to keep justice, do righteousness, keep the Sabbath, and keep our hands from doing evil.

  67. And I think for a lot of us, we don't like God trying to tell us what to do with our lives.

  68. But there's a problem with our way of thinking on a couple levels.

  69. First off, this command isn't just about obedience.

  70. It is about obedience in terms of not doing things that are wrong.

  71. But it's much more than that.

  72. When we see this phrase, do righteousness,

  73. in the Old Testament, this idea of righteousness and this idea of justice,

  74. it's not just an idea of avoiding what's wrong and punishing people who do wrong.

  75. It's also an idea of identifying things that are wrong in the world and setting them right.

  76. It's what we would think of maybe more as social justice,

  77. a pursuit of what is good and what is right,

  78. not just avoiding the bad, but pursuing actively the good,

  79. chasing after loving one another.

  80. And although we have this tendency to split the world into my private life where I can do whatever I want

  81. and the public world where there's neighbors and stuff like that,

  82. God doesn't dichotomize life in that way.

  83. For God, we are one person.

  84. We're not a separate person when the door is closed and when the door is open and everyone's around.

  85. We are one person.

  86. And the choices and decisions that we make in our private lives

  87. are going to impact the way that we act in public.

  88. And so this call that God wants us to keep our hands from doing evil,

  89. to keep justice, to do righteousness,

  90. it is a call to obedience,

  91. but it's a call to obedience for the sake of love

  92. because we cannot truly love our neighbors as God wants us to

  93. if we are not living our lives according to the standard that God calls us to.

  94. I'll give you a couple examples to illustrate what I'm talking about.

  95. So, we look at the world and we see issues like sex trafficking.

  96. And we're like, that's a bad thing.

  97. I don't think anyone in here would say, like, that's a good thing.

  98. And we say, we need to do things to stop sex trafficking.

  99. Maybe we can have a documentary screening like we did here last week

  100. to raise awareness and get people aware of what's happening in this world of sex trafficking.

  101. And we need to have rallies to call for the stop of it

  102. and to call for legislation to make it stop.

  103. And we can fight for all these things and they're good things to fight for,

  104. but if we go to these rallies and we host these documentary screenings

  105. and then we go home and watch pornography,

  106. we're actually helping spread sex trafficking

  107. because the sex trafficking industry is spread and fueled by the pornography industry.

  108. And what we do in our actions in public, saying we're against it,

  109. and what we do in our actions in private,

  110. doing actions that push for it to be spread,

  111. they're opposite.

  112. We can't truly fight for this justice

  113. and try to love the victims of sex trafficking

  114. like God wants us to

  115. if we're not willing to live our lives according to God's standard

  116. when it comes to what we're doing in the privacy of our own bedrooms.

  117. And so God's call to us to missional holiness

  118. is this holistic call for us to live all of our lives

  119. as people who are in pursuit of him,

  120. avoiding the wrong, pursuing the right.

  121. And not just as a legalistic,

  122. okay, I've done this, now I'm better than you.

  123. No, not at all.

  124. That's not the spirit of this at all.

  125. The spirit of this is,

  126. God gave this command to the nation of Israel.

  127. And he said,

  128. if you will follow me,

  129. if you will live life the way that I'm calling you to live life,

  130. the nations around you will see that.

  131. And they will see this beautiful way of life.

  132. He actually says that if you live according to the standard that I set for you,

  133. he says this back in Leviticus, Deuteronomy, somewhere back there.

  134. He says, if you live according to the standard that I set for you,

  135. there will be no poor in your land.

  136. They will be provided for,

  137. they will be taken care of,

  138. you won't have people starving on the streets,

  139. and the nations around you will see that

  140. and see that it is beautiful.

  141. I want you to follow me because when you follow me,

  142. the life that you will live is a beautiful life.

  143. And the people around you will see that beautiful life,

  144. and they will want that beautiful life,

  145. and they will be drawn to me.

  146. That's the heart of God when he gives this command to the Israelites

  147. in Isaiah chapter 56.

    Isaiah 56 chapter mention

  148. And it's a call that applies to us today as well.

  149. God wants us to keep justice,

  150. to do righteousness,

  151. to keep the Sabbath and avoid evil,

  152. not so that we can check off a list and say,

  153. I've done all these things.

  154. But because when we do these things,

  155. this holiness of our lives

  156. actually serves as a way

  157. of making the people around us

  158. see how good and beautiful

  159. the God we follow is.

  160. Because it's a different way of life.

  161. It's a pursuing of the good.

  162. And it's something that people around us

  163. will see as beautiful.

  164. Yes, avoiding the things that are evil,

  165. but also actively pursuing the things that are right,

  166. identifying what's wrong with the world,

  167. and actively trying

  168. to set those things right.

  169. There's a little story that I have

  170. that I think illustrates this.

  171. Back in the 1930s and 40s,

  172. there was a mayor in New York City

  173. called LaGuardia.

  174. You've probably heard of the airport

  175. named after him.

  176. I don't know if he was a Christian or not,

  177. but this story sort of illustrates this idea

  178. of identifying what's wrong with the world

  179. and seeking to set it right.

  180. Mayor LaGuardia,

  181. he was a very good mayor.

  182. He fought against corruption.

  183. He would join the police on their raids

  184. to try and break up the mob.

  185. He would ride around the city on fire trucks.

  186. He would take orphanages to baseball games.

  187. When the newspaper went on strike,

  188. he went on the radio

  189. and read out the comics to the kids

  190. so that they could still have the comics.

  191. He was loved and respected around the city.

  192. And this one night,

  193. in January of 1935,

  194. he walked into the courtroom,

  195. and he told the judge on duty,

  196. you can have the night off.

  197. Don't think you can get away with that today.

  198. But in 1935, apparently you could.

  199. And he told the judge,

  200. you take the night off.

  201. I'll sit in and hear the cases tonight.

  202. So after a couple minutes on the bench,

  203. this tattered old lady comes up to him.

  204. She's on trial for stealing a loaf of bread.

  205. And she says,

  206. please, sir,

  207. my daughter's husband left her.

  208. My daughter is sick.

  209. My two grandchildren are starving.

  210. I was just trying to provide

  211. a way for my family to eat.

  212. Yes, I tried to steal the bread,

  213. but I was doing it

  214. because I care about my family,

  215. and I don't want my grandchildren to starve.

  216. The baker who had been robbed

  217. was sitting there,

  218. and he refused to drop the charges.

  219. He said, you know,

  220. this is a bad neighborhood.

  221. This is one of the poorest neighborhoods

  222. in New York City.

  223. If we let her get away

  224. with trying to rob me,

  225. then everyone else is going to try to rob me,

  226. and I'm going to be out of business,

  227. and I'm going to need to rob people too.

  228. You need to hold her

  229. to the standard of justice,

  230. Mayor LaGuardia.

  231. And the mayor said,

  232. you know,

  233. this man is right.

  234. The requirements of justice

  235. say that you have to face a punishment.

  236. You either have to pay a $10 fine

  237. or spend 10 days in jail.

  238. And as he said this,

  239. he pulled out his wallet

  240. and grabbed a $10 bill

  241. and dropped it into his hat in front of him

  242. and said,

  243. here is the $10 fine,

  244. which I now remit.

  245. And additionally,

  246. I'm going to charge a $0.50 fine

  247. to every single person

  248. in this courtroom

  249. for living in a city

  250. in which this woman

  251. has to steal bread

  252. to feed her family.

  253. Mr. Bailiff,

  254. please collect the fines.

  255. So they sent around

  256. the bailiff

  257. to collect the fines,

  258. and they handed the woman

  259. $47.50

  260. with which she could go out

  261. and provide for her family,

  262. including $0.50

  263. from the shopkeeper

  264. who she had tried to rob.

  265. And the courtroom stood up

  266. and gave Mayor LaGuardia

  267. a standing ovation

  268. because they said,

  269. this,

  270. what you have just done,

  271. this pursuit of justice,

  272. not just in punishing her

  273. for doing what was wrong,

  274. but trying to fix the situation

  275. that required her

  276. to do that in the first place,

  277. that is beautiful.

  278. It's not just about

  279. holding people accountable

  280. for the wrong things

  281. that they do,

  282. but also looking at

  283. why did they do that,

  284. what are the social conditions

  285. that led them to do that,

  286. and how can we actively work

  287. to change those social conditions

  288. so that they don't have to do that

  289. in the future.

  290. That is the lifestyle

  291. that God is calling us to

  292. in this passage.

  293. Keep justice,

  294. do righteousness,

  295. keep the Sabbath,

  296. avoid evil.

  297. And when we live this way,

  298. this lifestyle is beautiful

  299. to the world around us.

  300. You know,

  301. we sort of probably

  302. also look at this passage

  303. and say,

  304. what's the Sabbath doing in there?

  305. But in reality,

  306. the idea of keeping the Sabbath

  307. encapsulates the rest

  308. of these ideas

  309. of keeping justice,

  310. doing righteousness,

  311. avoiding evil.

  312. Because when we have

  313. the type of trust in God

  314. where we are able

  315. to take one day a week

  316. and rest

  317. and count on Him

  318. to provide,

  319. that's going to spill

  320. into other areas

  321. of our lives as well.

  322. And again,

  323. this idea of keeping

  324. the Sabbath,

  325. I'm not going to go

  326. too much into it

  327. because Bernard spoke on it

  328. two weeks ago

  329. and you can go back

  330. and listen to his sermon

  331. if you want to learn

  332. more about Sabbath.

  333. But this idea

  334. of keeping the Sabbath,

  335. it's not just a command

  336. for the sake

  337. of keeping commands.

  338. Again,

  339. it's a command

  340. to love our neighbors.

  341. Why is that?

  342. Because bosses

  343. who check email

  344. at 3 a.m.

  345. and send out emails

  346. to their employees

  347. at 3 a.m.

  348. expect their employees

  349. to also be on their email

  350. at 3 a.m.

  351. bosses who never rest

  352. expect the employees

  353. who work for them

  354. to never rest.

  355. Bosses

  356. or parents

  357. or managers

  358. who have the confidence

  359. in God

  360. to take one day per week

  361. to just rest,

  362. to just rely on God

  363. to provide,

  364. are going to allow

  365. the people who work for them

  366. to also take that

  367. one day a week

  368. to rest,

  369. to rely on God

  370. to provide.

  371. And it's going

  372. to be a way

  373. for us to serve

  374. and love our neighbors,

  375. another way

  376. for us to show

  377. the people around us

  378. the beauty of the God

  379. that we worship

  380. and serve.

  381. And so God

  382. calls us

  383. to live

  384. this missional

  385. holiness lifestyle,

  386. a way of

  387. taking

  388. what He

  389. has created

  390. in the world

  391. and showing people

  392. a beautiful way

  393. to live life.

  394. And not just

  395. a beautiful way

  396. to live life,

  397. but a beautiful way

  398. to live life

  399. that points them back

  400. to the beautiful one

  401. who gave us

  402. that way to live.

  403. He wants us

  404. to live

  405. as a people

  406. who are known

  407. for missional holiness.

  408. But who does He want us

  409. to take this message to?

  410. Who does He want us

  411. to reach out to?

  412. That brings us

  413. to point number two,

  414. the mission of God.

  415. In verse three,

  416. He says,

  417. let not the foreigner

  418. who has joined himself

  419. to the Lord

  420. say,

  421. the Lord will surely

  422. separate me

  423. from His people.

  424. And let not the eunuch

  425. say,

  426. behold,

  427. I am a dry tree.

  428. He specifically says

  429. right here,

  430. he wants this message

  431. to go out

  432. to foreigners

  433. and to eunuchs,

  434. which to us

  435. may seem strange,

  436. but to the ancient Israelites,

  437. these two groups

  438. of people

  439. were known

  440. for being outsiders.

  441. Historically,

  442. if you look at each

  443. of the groups,

  444. we'll start with

  445. the foreigners.

  446. They were excluded

  447. from the Jewish community.

  448. Yes,

  449. God wanted them

  450. eventually

  451. to be included.

  452. He wanted Israel

  453. to live in such a way

  454. that their lifestyle

  455. would draw the foreigners

  456. to come and join.

  457. But they were excluded.

  458. There is a Jewish prayer

  459. that's prayed

  460. even to this day

  461. by the men

  462. when they wake up.

  463. And it says,

  464. God,

  465. I thank you

  466. that you did not make me

  467. a foreigner,

  468. a slave,

  469. or a woman.

  470. The women have

  471. their own version

  472. that basically says,

  473. God,

  474. I thank you

  475. that you did not make me

  476. a foreigner,

  477. a slave,

  478. and that you've given me

  479. the joys of being a woman

  480. or something like that.

  481. But there's a standard

  482. Jewish prayer

  483. to this day

  484. that says,

  485. God,

  486. I thank you

  487. for not making me

  488. a foreigner.

  489. The foreigners

  490. are excluded.

  491. The foreigners

  492. are looked down upon.

  493. Even if you jump ahead

  494. to the book of Acts,

  495. you'll see a story

  496. about the apostle Paul

  497. being arrested

  498. because the Jews

  499. thought that he had

  500. brought foreigners

  501. into the temple.

  502. Foreigners are excluded.

  503. Foreigners are not

  504. allowed in

  505. to God's house.

  506. Foreigners,

  507. that's most of us

  508. here today,

  509. I'm guessing.

  510. by the Jewish standards

  511. of this day

  512. when these words

  513. were spoken,

  514. were second-class citizens,

  515. outsiders,

  516. not seen as people

  517. on the same level

  518. as the Jews.

  519. But God says,

  520. that's going to change.

  521. He says,

  522. to the foreigners

  523. who join themselves

  524. to the Lord

  525. to minister to him,

  526. to love the name

  527. of the Lord

  528. and to be his servants,

  529. everyone who keeps

  530. the Sabbath

  531. and does not profane it

  532. and holds fast

  533. my covenant,

  534. these I will bring

  535. to my holy mountain

  536. and make them joyful

  537. in my house of prayer.

  538. Their burnt offerings

  539. and their sacrifices

  540. will be accepted

  541. on my altar

  542. for my house

  543. shall be called

  544. a house of prayer

  545. for all peoples.

  546. He says,

  547. you foreigners

  548. who have been excluded,

  549. you are going to be

  550. welcomed into my house.

  551. You who have been

  552. looked down upon,

  553. you are going

  554. to be welcomed.

  555. And he says,

  556. this may not really

  557. click with us,

  558. the significance of this,

  559. but he says,

  560. their sacrifices

  561. will be accepted.

  562. Now why is that

  563. so significant?

  564. Because as humans,

  565. we have this problem

  566. of sin

  567. that separates us

  568. from God.

  569. And in the Old Testament

  570. under the temple system,

  571. the only way

  572. to have your sins

  573. forgiven and taken away

  574. was by going to the temple

  575. and making a sacrifice

  576. to God of an animal.

  577. And when the animal

  578. was sacrificed,

  579. you would be forgiven

  580. for your sins.

  581. Which means that

  582. if your sacrifices

  583. are not accepted,

  584. you don't get forgiveness,

  585. you don't get acceptance

  586. by God.

  587. God's saying that

  588. he will accept

  589. their sacrifices,

  590. our sacrifices,

  591. I guess,

  592. since most of us

  593. are foreigners,

  594. is God saying,

  595. I will accept you.

  596. I will bring you in

  597. as part of my people.

  598. I'm not going to look

  599. down on you.

  600. I'm not going to see you

  601. as a separate group.

  602. I'm accepting you.

  603. I'm welcoming you.

  604. Come.

  605. He also speaks here

  606. to the eunuchs.

  607. Now eunuchs,

  608. again,

  609. are a group

  610. that in ancient Israel

  611. were outsiders.

  612. Deuteronomy,

    Deuteronomy 23:1

  613. chapter 23,

  614. verse 1,

  615. bans eunuchs

  616. from coming to worship

  617. in the temple.

  618. And there was a historian

  619. around the time of Jesus

  620. named Josephus

  621. who wrote down

  622. just a brief statement

  623. about the way

  624. that eunuchs

  625. were seen in his day.

  626. He says,

  627. let those that have

  628. made themselves eunuchs

  629. be had in detestation.

  630. This is a big word

  631. you don't hear very much.

  632. And avoid any conversation

  633. with them

  634. who have deprived themselves

  635. of their manhood.

  636. Let such be driven away

  637. as if they had killed

  638. their children

  639. since before the children

  640. were born

  641. they lost the means

  642. of having them.

  643. He says,

  644. if someone is a eunuch,

  645. you should avoid

  646. talking to them.

  647. You should treat them

  648. like you would treat someone

  649. who has killed

  650. their own children.

  651. Quite a harsh statement

  652. against people

  653. who are eunuchs.

  654. And the even worse part

  655. is that not only

  656. did they have this shame

  657. to carry around

  658. during their lifetime,

  659. but as eunuchs,

  660. obviously,

  661. they were not able

  662. to reproduce.

  663. Which means that

  664. there was no chance

  665. of their memory

  666. living on.

  667. There was no chance

  668. of there being

  669. future generations

  670. to carry on their name,

  671. to rewrite their story.

  672. They lived their one life

  673. in shame and disgrace

  674. and when they died,

  675. that was it.

  676. And God says,

  677. that is not going to be

  678. the story for the eunuchs

  679. anymore.

  680. He says,

  681. to the eunuchs

  682. who keep my Sabbaths,

  683. who choose the things

  684. that please me

  685. and hold fast my covenant,

  686. I will give in my house

  687. and within my walls

  688. a monument and a name

  689. better than sons

  690. and daughters.

  691. I will give them

  692. an everlasting name

  693. that shall not

  694. be cut off.

  695. He says,

  696. I'm going to give them

  697. a name better

  698. than children.

  699. I'm going to welcome

  700. them into my house.

  701. They're not going

  702. to be banned.

  703. They're not going

  704. to be excluded.

  705. They're not going

  706. to be outsiders.

  707. They're going to be

  708. welcomed.

  709. And he says,

  710. they will not be

  711. cut off.

  712. I don't know

  713. if you noticed this,

  714. but this passage

  715. right here has

  716. some amazing promises

  717. to those in the church

  718. who live as singles

  719. and commit themselves

  720. to celibacy

  721. or to those in the church

  722. who are married

  723. and unable to have kids.

  724. Because God's telling us

  725. that our standing

  726. as his people

  727. is not dependent

  728. on our ability

  729. to reproduce.

  730. It's dependent

  731. on our relationship

  732. with him.

  733. And so the fact

  734. that we don't have kids

  735. doesn't make us

  736. second-rate Christians.

  737. No, we are all

  738. the people of God.

  739. We are all

  740. a family of God.

  741. And God has

  742. a unique place

  743. in his family for us

  744. where we are able

  745. to serve in ways

  746. that people with kids

  747. can't serve.

  748. And God welcomes us

  749. as his people.

  750. God is excited

  751. to have us

  752. in his family

  753. if we are single

  754. or if we are married

  755. with no kids.

  756. That's just a side note.

  757. But God welcomes

  758. the foreigners.

  759. God welcomes

  760. the eunuchs.

  761. God welcomes

  762. the outsiders.

  763. He says,

  764. the people

  765. that society

  766. has rejected,

  767. I want them.

  768. The people

  769. that historically

  770. have not been able

  771. to stand before me,

  772. I want them

  773. to come.

  774. I'm not out

  775. just for the worthy.

  776. I'm not out

  777. just for those

  778. that everyone looks at

  779. and thinks they're great.

  780. I'm out

  781. for those

  782. who are outsiders.

  783. Which brings us

  784. to point number three,

  785. a call

  786. to the outsider.

  787. Because if God

  788. is interested

  789. in reaching out

  790. to the outsiders,

  791. that means

  792. that God

  793. is interested

  794. in us

  795. reaching out

  796. to the outsiders.

  797. My question

  798. for us today

  799. is who are

  800. the outsiders

  801. in our world.

  802. It's really tempting

  803. to just give a list.

  804. There are certain groups

  805. that the church

  806. generally looks down

  807. upon today

  808. that we could

  809. roll them off

  810. of our minds

  811. of people

  812. who are ostracized

  813. by the church,

  814. people who

  815. have a hard time

  816. fitting in

  817. if they show up

  818. at church.

  819. I was really tempted

  820. to list off

  821. a couple of these groups,

  822. but I received

  823. some good wisdom

  824. from some friends

  825. who said,

  826. Eric,

  827. remember,

  828. if you do that,

  829. you make it seem

  830. like some group

  831. is worse

  832. than another group.

  833. And that's not true.

  834. The reality

  835. of the situation

  836. is that all of us

  837. are outsiders

  838. before God.

  839. All of us

  840. have chosen

  841. sin

  842. that separates us

  843. from God

  844. in our lives.

  845. All of us.

  846. sin

  847. and there's no one group

  848. that's a little better

  849. or a little worse,

  850. a little more severe

  851. or a little less severe sin.

  852. The fact is,

  853. sin is sin.

  854. Sin makes us guilty.

  855. Sin separates us

  856. from God.

  857. And in God's eyes,

  858. all of us

  859. are born

  860. as outsiders.

  861. And if we're honest,

  862. we can all see

  863. glimpses of this

  864. even just in the way

  865. that we live our lives

  866. on a social level.

  867. Right?

  868. If we're in middle school

  869. or high school,

  870. we feel like we need

  871. to have the best

  872. social networks,

  873. profiles,

  874. so the people around us

  875. can look to us

  876. and say,

  877. like,

  878. that's a cool guy.

  879. If we're new in a job

  880. or new in a social group,

  881. we try and find

  882. the influencers there

  883. and get on their good side

  884. so everyone else

  885. will like us.

  886. Maybe if we feel like

  887. friends aren't

  888. including us in stuff,

  889. we'll get really

  890. passive-aggressive.

  891. You know,

  892. you're a jerk!

  893. I hate you!

  894. Is something wrong?

  895. No!

  896. You're my best friend!

  897. Or maybe we'll drop

  898. hints about it,

  899. like,

  900. you know,

  901. you really,

  902. you really sound like

  903. you're going to have

  904. a great birthday party.

  905. You know the one thing

  906. that would make it better?

  907. If I was there.

  908. Too bad I can't be.

  909. Didn't get an invitation.

  910. Right?

  911. We know

  912. from the way

  913. that our social interactions go

  914. that all of us

  915. at times

  916. feel like outsiders

  917. and feel like

  918. there are things

  919. that we need to do

  920. to be accepted

  921. and to be on the inside.

  922. And the thing is,

  923. all of that

  924. social pressure

  925. and feeling

  926. of being an outsider

  927. is merely a shadow

  928. of the fact

  929. and the reality

  930. that in

  931. the relationship

  932. that we have

  933. with God,

  934. we are alienated

  935. and we are

  936. outsiders.

  937. it's not just

  938. a figment

  939. of our imagination,

  940. it is the reality

  941. of the situation.

  942. That all of us

  943. have rebelled

  944. against God.

  945. But the good news is

  946. that God

  947. wants us

  948. as his people.

  949. God calls

  950. to each of us.

  951. You know,

  952. the Bible tells us

  953. in Isaiah 53

  954. it says that

  955. each of us

  956. like sheep

  957. have gone astray

  958. and we've chased

  959. after our own desires

  960. rather than God.

  961. And yet Jesus comes

  962. and listen

  963. from Isaiah 53

  964. about the things

  965. that he said,

  966. just three chapters

  967. in front of the one

  968. that we're looking at today,

  969. the things that Jesus

  970. went through

  971. so that we no longer

  972. have to be outsiders.

  973. in chapter 53

  974. verse 3

  975. it tells us

  976. that he was despised

  977. and rejected

  978. by men

  979. so that we

  980. can be accepted

  981. by God.

  982. In 53

  983. 5

  984. it says that

  985. he was wounded

  986. for our transgressions

  987. and pierced

  988. for our iniquities

  989. so that we

  990. don't have to be.

  991. In 53

  992. 9

  993. it says

  994. they made

  995. his grave

  996. with the wicked

  997. although he had done

  998. no violence

  999. because we had

  1000. and someone

  1001. had to pay

  1002. the price

  1003. for us

  1004. to be accepted.

  1005. You know

  1006. we talked earlier

  1007. about this idea

  1008. of missional holiness

  1009. Jesus is

  1010. the ultimate example

1011. of what it looks like

  1012. to live

  1013. this life

  1014. of missional holiness.

  1015. Not only

  1016. perfectly obeying

  1017. every one

  1018. of God's laws

  1019. his entire life

  1020. but also

  1021. at the end

  1022. of his life

  1023. laying down

  1024. his life

  1025. to set right

  1026. what was wrong

  1027. in our relationship

  1028. with God.

  1029. When we want

  1030. an example

1031. of what it looks like

  1032. to live

  1033. with this missional holiness

  1034. Jesus is

  1035. our perfect example.

  1036. He did

  1037. what was perfectly right

  1038. but didn't settle

  1039. for that

1040. as if it was enough.

  1041. No,

  1042. he also pursued

  1043. setting to right

  1044. what was wrong

  1045. in the world

  1046. so that God

  1047. can welcome in

  1048. us

  1049. the outsiders

  1050. into

  1051. his family.

  1052. God

  1053. if you're here

  1054. today

  1055. and you're

  1056. not a Christian

  1057. my encouragement

  1058. to you

  1059. is that God

  1060. is calling

  1061. to you

  1062. today.

  1063. You've spent

  1064. long enough

  1065. being an outsider

  1066. from his family

  1067. and he wants

  1068. you

  1069. to come

  1070. to him

  1071. today.

  1072. He wants

  1073. to welcome

  1074. you in.

  1075. Despite your sin

  1076. Jesus has come

  1077. and paid

  1078. the price

  1079. so that you

  1080. can be

  1081. accepted

  1082. by God

  1083. and you

  1084. no longer

  1085. need to be

  1086. an outsider.

  1087. Will you

  1088. come running

  1089. to him?

  1090. If you're here

  1091. today

  1092. and you're

  1093. a Christian

  1094. God is also

  1095. calling you.

  1096. See you

  1097. were once

  1098. an outsider

  1099. but now

  1100. you have been

  1101. welcomed in

  1102. to God's

  1103. family

  1104. and now

  1105. God wants

  1106. you to go

  1107. out and reach

  1108. out to the

  1109. outsiders

  1110. in your

  1111. world.

  1112. So who

  1113. are the

  1114. outsiders

  1115. in your

  1116. world?

  1117. Maybe a

  1118. good first

  1119. step

  1120. question

  1121. to ask

  1122. yourself

  1123. is just

  1124. who are

  1125. the

  1126. non-Christians

  1127. that I

  1128. interact

  1129. with

  1130. on a

  1131. regular

  1132. basis?

  1133. Maybe

  1134. co-workers

  1135. maybe

  1136. friends

  1137. maybe

  1138. people

  1139. from

  1140. your

  1141. club

  1142. or

  1143. your

  1144. sports

  1145. team

  1146. the

  1147. people

  1148. that

  1149. you

  1150. just

  1151. see

  1152. on

  1153. a

  1154. regular

  1155. basis.

  1156. But

  1157. then

  1158. let's

  1159. take it

  1160. one

  1161. step

  1162. further.

  1163. Who

  1164. are

  1165. the

  1166. people

  1167. that

  1168. you

  1169. see

  1170. on

  1171. a

  1172. regular

  1173. basis

  1174. but

  1175. you

  1176. don't

  1177. really

  1178. see?

  1179. Maybe

  1180. it's

  1181. the

  1182. janitor

  1183. at your

  1184. office.

  1185. They

  1186. come in

  1187. and they

  1188. take out

  1189. the trash

  1190. every day.

  1191. You

  1192. see that

  1193. same

  1194. face

  1195. every

  1196. day

  1197. and you

  1198. still

  1199. don't

  1200. know

  1201. that

  1202. person's

  1203. name

  1204. even

  1205. though

  1206. you've

  1207. seen

  1208. them

  1209. every

  1210. day

  1211. for

  1212. five

  1213. years.

  1214. Maybe

  1215. it's

  1216. the

  1217. person

  1218. after

  1219. church

  1220. standing

  1221. at the

  1222. table

  1223. by

  1224. themselves

  1225. just

  1226. waiting

  1227. for

  1228. someone

  1229. to

  1230. say

  1231. hi

  1232. and

  1233. welcome

  1234. them.

  1235. I

  1236. don't

  1237. know

  1238. who

  1239. it

  1240. is

  1241. in

  1242. your

  1243. life.

  1244. But

  1245. God

  1246. has

  1247. placed

  1248. people

  1249. in

  1250. each

  1251. of

  1252. our

  1253. lives

  1254. so

  1255. that

  1256. we

  1257. can

  1258. connect

  1259. with

  1260. them.

  1261. And

  1262. when

  1263. we

  1264. look

  1265. at

  1266. people

  1267. like

  1268. janitors

  1269. and

  1270. say

  1271. you

  1272. know

  1273. I'm

  1274. on

  1275. a

  1276. different

  1277. level

  1278. socially

  1279. than

  1280. them.

  1281. They're

  1282. an

  1283. outsider

  1284. I'm

  1285. in.

  1286. I

  1287. can't

  1288. interact

  1289. with

  1290. them.

  1291. what

  1292. we're

  1293. saying

  1294. is

  1295. God's

  1296. desire

  1297. to

  1298. welcome

  1299. the

  1300. outsider

  1301. doesn't

  1302. matter

  1303. to

  1304. me.

  1305. I

  1306. care

  1307. more

  1308. about

  1309. my

  1310. social

  1311. status

  1312. than

  1313. I

  1314. do

  1315. about

  1316. loving

  1317. my

  1318. neighbor.

  1319. But

  1320. the

  1321. truth

  1322. is

  1323. that

  1324. God

  1325. reached

  1326. out

  1327. to

  1328. us

  1329. when

  1330. we

  1331. were

  1332. outsiders

  1333. and

  1334. he

  1335. wants

  1336. us

  1337. to

  1338. reach

  1339. out

  1340. to

  1341. the

  1342. outsiders

  1343. around

  1344. us.

  1345. One

  1346. more

  1347. step

  1348. further

  1349. in

  1350. this

  1351. idea

  1352. of

  1353. reaching

  1354. out

  1355. to

  1356. the

  1357. outsiders.

  1358. Who

  1359. are

  1360. the

  1361. people

  1362. in

  1363. your

  1364. life

  1365. that

  1366. you

  1367. feel

  1368. are

  1369. beyond

  1370. salvation?

  1371. Who

  1372. are

  1373. the

  1374. people

  1375. that

  1376. you

  1377. look

  1378. at

  1379. and

  1380. you

  1381. say

  1382. oh

  1383. them?

  1384. Yeah

  1385. I

  1386. don't

  1387. think

  1388. God

  1389. would

  1390. really

  1391. be

  1392. interested

  1393. in

  1394. them.

  1395. Because

  1396. the

  1397. truth

  1398. is

  1399. that

  1400. those

  1401. are

  1402. the

  1403. people

  1404. that

  1405. God

  1406. is

  1407. calling

  1408. us

  1409. to

  1410. reach

  1411. out

  1412. to

  1413. today.

  1414. Jesus

  1415. died

  1416. to

  1417. welcome

  1418. the

  1419. outsider

  1420. there's

  1421. no

  1422. group

  1423. that's

  1424. more

  1425. or

  1426. less

  1427. worthy

  1428. of

  1429. his

  1430. love.

  1431. All

  1432. of

  1433. us

  1434. are

  1435. unworthy

  1436. and

  1437. all

  1438. of

  1439. us

  1440. are

  1441. welcomed

  1442. freely

  1443. only

  1444. as

  1445. a

  1446. gift

  1447. of

  1448. grace.

  1449. And

  1450. when

  1451. we

  1452. put

  1453. ourselves

  1454. in

  1455. God's

  1456. shoes

  1457. and

  1458. say

  1459. this

  1460. person

  1461. is

  1462. unworthy

  1463. of

  1464. hearing

  1465. the

  1466. gospel

  1467. what

  1468. we

  1469. do

  1470. is

  1471. we

  1472. say

  1473. I'm

  1474. better

  1475. than

  1476. you.

  1477. I'm

  1478. more

  1479. deserving

  1480. than

  1481. you.

  1482. But

  1483. let me

  1484. ask a

  1485. question.

  1486. who is

  1487. the

  1488. worst

  1489. sinner?

  1490. The

  1491. prostitute

  1492. who comes

  1493. and sells

  1494. her body

  1495. because that

  1496. is the

  1497. only way

  1498. she knows

  1499. of to

  1500. provide

  1501. for her

  1502. family.

  1503. Or the

  1504. Christian

  1505. who looks

  1506. at her

  1507. and based

  1508. on her

  1509. profession

  1510. decides that

  1511. she's not

  1512. worthy of

  1513. hearing the

  1514. gospel.

  1515. who is

  1516. the

  1517. worst

  1518. sinner

  1519. in that

  1520. situation?

  1521. Jesus

  1522. calls us

  1523. to reach

  1524. out to

  1525. the

  1526. outsider.

  1527. He did

  1528. it.

  1529. He set

  1530. the

  1531. perfect

  1532. example

  1533. of it

  1534. in his

  1535. life.

  1536. And now

  1537. he calls

  1538. us to

  1539. do it

  1540. as well.

  1541. And he

  1542. gives us

  1543. a promise

  1544. that as

  1545. we go

  1546. we don't

  1547. need to

  1548. be afraid

  1549. because the

  1550. success

  1551. of our

  1552. going

  1553. is not

  1554. dependent

  1555. on the

  1556. expertise

  1557. of our

  1558. presentation

  1559. but on

  1560. the

  1561. faithfulness

  1562. of God.

  1563. When we

  1564. share the

  1565. gospel with

  1566. others we're

  1567. not going

  1568. as experts

  1569. who have

  1570. all the

  1571. answers.

  1572. We're

  1573. going as

  1574. outsiders

  1575. who have

  1576. been welcomed

  1577. in and

  1578. are offering

  1579. someone else

  1580. another

  1581. outsider,

  1582. another chance

  1583. to be welcomed

  1584. in in the

  1585. same way

  1586. that we

  1587. have.

  1588. And in

  1589. chapter 56

  1590. verse 8

  1591. God promises

  1592. I will gather

  1593. yet others

  1594. to him

  1595. besides those

  1596. already

  1597. gathered.

  1598. He says

  1599. I'm going

  1600. to take

  1601. care of

  1602. this.

  1603. People

  1604. will come

  1605. when you

  1606. share the

  1607. gospel.

  1608. My family

  1609. will grow.

  1610. Outsiders

  1611. will be

  1612. welcomed in

  1613. as long

  1614. as you

  1615. are willing

  1616. to go

  1617. and share

  1618. with them.

  1619. And so

  1620. if you

  1621. are a

  1622. Christian

  1623. here today

  1624. God calls

  1625. you reach

  1626. out to

  1627. the outsiders

  1628. in your

  1629. life.

  1630. Don't

  1631. ignore them.

  1632. Don't

  1633. overlook

  1634. them because

  1635. you think

  1636. you're better

  1637. than them.

  1638. But go

  1639. to them.

  1640. Share

  1641. with them.

  1642. Show

  1643. them the

  1644. beauty

  1645. of

  1646. Jesus.

  1647. He has

  1648. promised to

  1649. take care of

  1650. the results.

  1651. But he calls

  1652. us to live

  1653. on mission

  1654. as a group

  1655. that he has

  1656. formed for the

  1657. accomplishment

  1658. of this

  1659. mission.

  1660. He says

  1661. go.

  1662. Live lives

  1663. of missional

  1664. holiness.

  1665. Reach out

  1666. to the outsiders

  1667. because I love

  1668. them and I want

  1669. them and I want

  1670. them to come

  1671. to me.

  1672. I want you

  1673. to be my

  1674. hands and

  1675. feet.

  1676. Welcome

  1677. them into

  1678. the family.

  1679. Will we

  1680. do that?

  1681. Let's pray.

  1682. Father we

  1683. thank you for

  1684. your love for

  1685. us.

  1686. We thank you

  1687. that you

  1688. are good

  1689. and you

  1690. are faithful

  1691. and that

  1692. you give

  1693. us grace

  1694. that we

  1695. don't deserve

  1696. that when

  1697. we are

  1698. outsiders

  1699. you called

  1700. to us

  1701. and you

  1702. welcomed us

  1703. into your

  1704. family.

  1705. God I

  1706. pray that we

  1707. would be a

  1708. people who

  1709. live lives

  1710. of obedience

  1711. to you

  1712. not just for

  1713. the sake of

  1714. keeping the

  1715. rules but as

  1716. a way of

  1717. showing the

  1718. world around

  1719. us how

  1720. beautiful of

  1721. a God

  1722. you are

  1723. and of

  1724. inviting them

  1725. in to

  1726. join your

  1727. family.

  1728. God I

  1729. pray for

  1730. those who

  1731. are here

  1732. today who

  1733. don't know

  1734. you that

  1735. they would

  1736. come running

  1737. to you that

  1738. they would

  1739. find a

  1740. place of

  1741. welcome and

  1742. a place where

  1743. they don't need

  1744. to be an

  1745. outsider anymore

  1746. in you.

  1747. I pray for

  1748. those who

  1749. are here

  1750. today that

  1751. know you

  1752. that we

  1753. would live

  1754. lives of

  1755. faith telling

  1756. those around

  1757. us about

  1758. you and

  1759. how great

  1760. you are

  1761. trusting you

  1762. to be

  1763. faithful with

  1764. the results.

  1765. God we

  1766. love you.

  1767. In Jesus

  1768. name.

  1769. Amen.
