  1. In fact, we're going to read two passages.

  2. So first of all, in 1 Thessalonians, we'll read chapter 1.

  3. And then we're going to turn over to the next letter and read from the end of that letter,

  4. 2 Thessalonians chapter 3, verses 1 to 5.

    2 Thessalonians 3:1–5

  5. We begin with 1 Thessalonians chapter 1.

    1 Thessalonians 1 chapter mention

  6. Let us hear God's word.

  7. Paul, Silas, and Timothy, to the Church of the Thessalonians,

  8. in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, grace and peace to you.

  9. We always thank God for all of you, mentioning you in our prayers.

  10. We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith,

  11. your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.

  12. For we know, brothers, loved by God, that he has chosen you,

  13. because our gospel came to you not simply with words,

  14. but also with power and the Holy Spirit and with deep conviction.

  15. You know how we lived among you for your sake.

  16. You became imitators of us and of the Lord.

  17. In spite of severe suffering,

  18. you welcomed the message with the joy given by the Holy Spirit.

  19. And so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia.

  20. The Lord's message rang out from you,

  21. not only in Macedonia and Achaia,

  22. your faith in God has become known everywhere.

  23. Therefore, we do not need to say anything about it,

  24. for they themselves report what kind of reception you gave us.

  25. They tell how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God.

  26. And to wait for his son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead,

  27. Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath.

  28. Then if you'll turn with me to the next letter, 2 Thessalonians,

  29. we're going to read in chapter 3, verses 1 to 5.

  30. Finally, brothers, pray for us that the message of the Lord may spread rapidly

  31. and be honored just as it was with you.

  32. And pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men,

  33. for not everyone has faith.

  34. But the Lord is faithful,

  35. and he will strengthen and protect you from the evil one.

  36. We have confidence in the Lord that you are doing

  37. and will continue to do the things we command.

  38. May the Lord direct your hearts into God's love and Christ's perseverance.

  39. If you want to follow with me this evening,

  40. I want us to look at two verses from 2 Thessalonians chapter 3.

    2 Thessalonians 3 chapter mention

  41. The first two verses where Paul writes,

  42. Finally, brothers, pray for us that the word of the Lord may spread rapidly

  43. and be honored just as it was with you.

  44. And pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men,

  45. for not everyone has faith.

  46. In this text then, we have simply an exhortation

  47. for the church to gather to pray corporately

  48. for the ministry of God's words.

  49. Paul gives two reasons, two aspects to this prayer.

  50. The first is that the word of the Lord would advance successfully.

  51. would speed ahead and be honored.

  52. And the second aspect to this

  53. is that God's servants would know his protection

  54. and his deliverance from those who are opposed to the gospel

  55. in light of the fact that not all have faith.

  56. So this text is teaching us

  57. that the prayer for the gospel to advance

  58. is not just the responsibility of the ordained ministry

  59. of the pastors and the elders,

  60. that it is the duty of every Christian

  61. to pray that God's word would be successful

  62. in penetrating the hearts of sinful human beings.

  63. It is true that prayer is a special duty

  64. of those who are set aside to preach.

  65. The apostolic model in Acts 6-4

  66. is we will give ourselves to prayer

  67. and the ministry of the word.

  68. And yet Paul, who would have lived on that principle,

  69. frequently covets the prayers of the churches

  70. in his letters.

  71. Romans 15, 30-32.

  72. Philippians 1, 18-20.

  73. Let's just read a couple of examples.

  74. Ephesians 6 and verse 19 and 20.

  75. Pray also for me, Paul says,

  76. that whenever I open my mouth,

  77. words may be given me

  78. so that I will fearlessly make known

  79. the mystery of the gospel

  80. for which I am an ambassador in chains.

  81. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly

  82. as I should.

  83. It requests that the Colossians would pray

  84. that he would have a door opened wide

  85. for the ministry of the word.

  86. So it was his special duty as a preacher

  87. to give himself to prayer.

  88. And yet he exhorted the churches

  89. to join him in praying.

  90. Paul then had a clear mission.

  91. The Lord told him what he would suffer

  92. on his behalf.

  93. And he had a comprehensive message.

  94. He preached the cross of Jesus Christ

  95. as the power of God and to salvation.

  96. He preached the whole counsel of God.

  97. But he knew that he wouldn't have

  98. a completed ministry

  99. if he was left on his own.

  100. He knew there was a sense

  101. in which he could only fulfill

  102. what the Lord had laid on his plate

  103. through the prayers of God's people.

  104. So he exhorts them,

  105. finally, brothers, pray for us.

  106. The formal preaching of the word then

  107. is in the hands of a minority

  108. within the church.

  109. But that can only continue

  110. and that can only have its maximum effect

  111. as the whole church joins

  112. in prayer behind the preacher.

  113. Often we find it easier to recognize

  114. the need to support ministers and missionaries

  115. in practical, visible ways,

  116. like finances and so on.

  117. Prayer is by nature invisible

  118. to the public eye.

  119. Jesus said,

  120. when you go to pray,

  121. go into your room and shut the door

  122. and pray to your Father who is in secret.

  123. And perhaps because here we're engaging

  124. with matters of spiritual importance,

  125. things which we can only see

  126. with the eye of faith,

  127. not with the eye of the flesh.

  128. For that reason,

  129. we need to be reminded regularly

  130. and exhorted,

  131. like these Thessalonian Christians,

  132. to take this responsibility seriously.

  133. A carriage will pick up speed

  134. as all the horses pull together.

  135. An Olympic rowing boat requires

  136. that everyone is pulling on the oar

  137. in the same rhythm.

  138. The gears of the gospel,

  139. if you like,

  140. the gears of gospel preaching

  141. turn most smoothly

  142. when they're oiled with the prayers

  143. of the whole church.

  144. Let's consider, first of all then,

  145. an explanation of why we need prayer

  146. in relation to the ministry of the words.

  147. Paul makes this request for himself.

  148. Pray for us.

  149. Pray for me.

  150. Pray for my team, he is saying.

  151. But then he doesn't ask them

  152. to pray for his personal success.

  153. He doesn't say pray for me

  154. so that I can be the best missionary,

  155. the best preacher in town.

  156. He doesn't say pray for me

  157. that I would have a comfortable life,

  158. plenty of money in my pocket

  159. and not too many opponents.

  160. His prayer for himself is this,

  161. that God's word would advance,

  162. that scripture may speed ahead.

  163. Paul is dedicated

  164. to the service of Jesus Christ.

  165. He's so set aside

  166. to advance his master's kingdom

  167. that his agenda is

  168. that Jesus would be known,

  169. not that Paul would be known.

  170. He says, doesn't he,

  171. in the letter to Galatians,

  172. I've been crucified with Christ.

  173. It's no longer I who live,

  174. but Christ who lives in me.

  175. And so preaching for Paul

  176. was not about making himself known.

  177. It was about making the words

  178. of God known.

  179. He preached as he lived,

  180. not to show off his intellect,

  181. his knowledge, his achievements,

  182. his abilities,

  183. but to present the glories

  184. of God's wisdom

  185. and God's righteousness

  186. and God's power.

  187. The word of Christ

  188. was dwelling richly in Paul's heart

  189. and he couldn't help but overflow

  190. in his prayers

  191. that the word of the Lord

  192. would progress

  193. regardless of the cost

  194. to him.

  195. We often pray

  196. that the preacher

  197. would know God's help

  198. and God's assistance

  199. and that's important.

  200. It's a fearful thing

  201. to stand in a pulpit

  202. on a platform

  203. and speak from God's word

  204. to God's people.

  205. It's demanding spiritual work.

  206. It can leave a strong man

  207. feeling physically

  208. and emotionally drained.

  209. Preachers need your prayers.

  210. But the goal

  211. is not to get

  212. the pastor

  213. through this week

  214. in a fit state

  215. to preach again next week.

  216. The goal

  217. is to get God's word

  218. into people's hearts.

  219. To get God's words

  220. into the hearts

  221. of unbelievers

  222. with power

  223. to convict them

  224. and to convert them.

  225. To get God's word

  226. into our own hearts

  227. with power

  228. to make us grow

  229. in holiness

  230. and in knowledge

  231. of the Lord.

  232. The goal

  233. is not the success

  234. of the preacher.

  235. The goal

  236. is the success

  237. of the gospel.

  238. Imagine a boxer.

  239. He might have

  240. the perfect physique.

  241. He might have

  242. great stamina

  243. but he doesn't win

  244. the bout

  245. until he lands

  246. that killer punch.

  247. And you might have

  248. the perfect preacher

  249. with the perfect

  250. sermon illustrations

  251. and the perfect outline.

  252. But it all comes

  253. to nothing

  254. unless the gospel

  255. gets deep

  256. into the hearts

  257. of the people.

  258. Do you value

  259. God's word

  260. like Paul

  261. valued it?

  262. A true Christian

  263. sees the scripture

  264. as spiritual light,

  265. as spiritual food.

  266. Our whole eternity

  267. depends on this book.

  268. So like the disciples

  269. we would say

  270. where else

  271. should we go?

  272. You have the words

  273. of eternal life.

  274. Our appetites

  275. for spiritual things

  276. can ebb and flow.

  277. But if you've never

  278. delighted

  279. in God's word

  280. like that,

  281. if you've never

  282. tasted this

  283. and seen that it's

  284. sweeter than honey,

  285. if you've never

  286. craved it

  287. as a baby

  288. craves milk,

  289. you need to examine

  290. your heart.

  291. Do you have

  292. that eternal life

  293. which is received

  294. by faith

  295. when you hear

  296. this word?

  297. Those of us

  298. who are Christians,

  299. we may have

  300. a degree of success

  301. as preachers

  302. with natural ability

  303. and so on.

  304. But the success

  305. of the word

  306. is something

  307. that only God

  308. can give.

  309. We can't stir

  310. that up,

  311. we can't achieve

  312. that.

  313. God gives it

  314. as you pray.

  315. James stands

  316. here regularly,

  317. other men

  318. stand here regularly

  319. and preach

  320. God's word

  321. faithfully.

  322. It will only

  323. have its maximum

  324. effect

  325. as you join

  326. behind them

  327. in seeking

  328. God's blessing.

  329. But you might

  330. raise an objection

  331. at this point.

  332. You might say

  333. that God's word

  334. cannot fail.

  335. It must succeed

  336. because it has

  337. a life and a power

  338. of its own.

  339. It's living and active.

  340. It's sharper

  341. than a two-edged sword.

  342. God himself

  343. has said that

  344. it will not return

  345. to me empty

  346. but will accomplish

  347. what I desire

  348. and achieve

  349. the purpose

  350. for which I sent it.

  351. Why then

  352. shall we pray?

  353. All this objection

  354. is both right

  355. and wrong.

  356. It's correct

  357. so far as it goes.

  358. The scripture

  359. is God's word

  360. objective fact.

  361. Every time

  362. this is read

  363. God speaks

  364. and we should

  365. be listening.

  366. It has divine

  367. sanction

  368. and authority.

  369. That's why

  370. Paul could rejoice

  371. even when evil

  372. men were preaching

  373. for evil

  374. motives.

  375. But this is only

  376. one side

  377. of the truth.

  378. Yes

  379. God is sovereign

  380. and powerfully

  381. at work

  382. in his word

  383. but that doesn't

  384. give us an excuse

  385. to be fatalistic

  386. to be passive

  387. or to be indifferent.

  388. It is the sovereign

  389. Lord's word

  390. and he gets

  391. to choose

  392. where and when

  393. it is most effective.

  394. He's given us

  395. the responsibility

  396. to listen

  397. to his word

  398. and to preach

  399. his word

  400. by his design.

  401. For example

  402. in the Westminster

  403. larger catechism

  404. question 155

  405. says how is the word

  406. made effectual

  407. to salvation?

  408. And the answer

  409. is

  410. the spirit

  411. of God

  412. makes the reading

  413. but especially

  414. the preaching

  415. of the word

  416. an effectual

  417. means

  418. to enlighten

  419. convince

  420. and humble

  421. sinners

  422. to drive them

  423. out of themselves

  424. and draw them

  425. to Christ.

  426. The spirit

  427. then has chosen

  428. to use

  429. the preached

  430. word

  431. without question

  432. 160

  433. says what is

  434. required of those

  435. that hear the preached

  436. word?

  437. And this is the answer.

  438. It is required

  439. of those that hear

  440. the word preached

  441. that they attend

  442. upon it with

  443. diligence

  444. preparation

  445. and prayer.

  446. We can't

  447. come to God's

  448. words

  449. in difference

  450. with our

  451. mind filled

  452. with other

  453. things

  454. and expect

  455. to be blessed

  456. by it.

  457. We come

  458. dependent

  459. on him

  460. by prayer.

  461. If you like

  462. this is the

  463. belt of truth

  464. but it will

  465. only protect

  466. you

  467. as a piece

  468. of armor

  469. if you put

  470. it on

  471. and pull

  472. it tight.

  473. The Lord

  474. has chosen

  475. to advance

  476. his kingdom

  477. through preaching

  478. spirit filled

  479. men

  480. preaching

  481. with love

  482. and faith

  483. in their

  484. hearts

  485. chosen by

  486. Christ

  487. and set

  488. aside

  489. by the

  490. church

  491. to that

  492. task.

  493. The Holy

  494. Spirit

  495. isn't a

  496. bare

  497. knuckle

  498. fighter.

  499. He takes

  500. up a

  501. sword.

  502. He goes

  503. into battle

  504. but he

  505. doesn't

  506. leave the

  507. sword

  508. in the

  509. sheath.

  510. He takes

  511. up a

  512. preacher

  513. like Paul

  514. and puts

  515. him on

  516. like a

  517. gauntlet

  518. and then

  519. wields

  520. the sword

  521. with almighty

  522. power

  523. and omniscient

  524. precision

  525. to make

  526. every blow

  527. count

  528. whether to

  529. strike a

  530. sinner with

  531. conviction

  532. or to

  533. heal a

  534. grieving

  535. saint.

  536. It's his

  537. choice to

  538. do this

  539. as the

  540. whole church

  541. prays

  542. that God's

  543. word would

  544. speed ahead

  545. and be

  546. honored.

  547. Preaching

  548. doesn't happen

  549. automatically.

  550. It doesn't

  551. happen

  552. mechanically.

  553. God has

  554. designed it

  555. to function

  556. in the

  557. relational

  558. context

  559. of the

  560. church

  561. or in

  562. it

  563. together

  564. as a

  565. body.

  566. James

  567. can put

  568. the

  569. arrow

  570. in

  571. the

  572. bow

  573. but he

  574. needs

  575. the

  576. strength

  577. of the

  578. whole

  579. church

  580. to pull

  581. the

  582. string

  583. back

  584. and let

  585. it

  586. fly

  587. with

  588. God's

  589. almighty

  590. power.

  591. God

  592. has

  593. ordained

  594. that his

  595. word

  596. won't

  597. come back

  598. to him

  599. empty

  600. but has

  601. he not

  602. also

  603. ordained

  604. that true

  605. prayer

  606. won't

  607. come back

  608. to him

  609. empty.

  610. Jesus

  611. said

  612. if you

  613. abide

  614. in me

  615. and my

  616. words

  617. abide

  618. in you

  619. ask

  620. whatever

  621. you

  622. wish

  623. and it

  624. will be

  625. done

  626. for you.

  627. Can you

  628. join

  629. Paul

  630. in this

  631. exhortation?

  632. Is it

  633. your wish

  634. that God's

  635. word would

  636. speed ahead

  637. and be

  638. honored

  639. because that

  640. is a

  641. prayer

  642. that the

  643. Lord

  644. delights

  645. to answer.

  646. An

  647. explanation

  648. then of

  649. the need

  650. for prayer

  651. in relation

  652. to the

  653. ministry

  654. of the

  655. word.

  656. Secondly

  657. consider the

  658. experience

  659. of answered

  660. prayer in

  661. relation

  662. to the

  663. ministry

  664. of the

  665. word.

  666. Paul

  667. asks them

  668. to pray

  669. that it

  670. would speed

  671. ahead

  672. and be

  673. honored

  674. and he's

  675. confident

  676. that they'll

  677. understand

  678. what he

  679. means

  680. because he

  681. goes on

  682. to say

  683. just as

  684. it was

  685. with you

  686. just as

  687. happened

  688. in your

  689. experience.

  690. He's

  691. confident

  692. that they'll

  693. know what

  694. he's talking

  695. about.

  696. If we

  697. combine the

  698. story in

  699. Acts 17

  700. of how

  701. the church

  702. of Thessalonica

  703. was formed

  704. with the

  705. passage in

  706. 1 Thessalonians

  707. 1 that we

  708. read we

  709. see that

  710. the gospel

  711. made rapid

  712. progress

  713. in

  714. Thessalonica.

  715. Acts 17

  716. 2 suggests

  717. that Paul

  718. may only

  719. have been

  720. there for

  721. three weeks

  722. reasoning

  723. in the

  724. tabernacles

  725. and some

  726. people were

  727. persuaded in

  728. that time

  729. and then

  730. because of

  731. intense threat

  732. of persecution

  733. the Christians

  734. sent Paul

  735. away

  736. and yet

  737. look at that

  738. description in

  739. 1 Thessalonians

  740. 1

  741. a church

  742. that had

  743. formed in

  744. just three

  745. weeks

  746. and yet

  747. the gospel

  748. came in

  749. power

  750. and in

  751. the Holy

  752. Spirit

  753. and with

  754. deep

  755. conviction

  756. and they

  757. became

  758. imitators

  759. of the

  760. apostles

  761. experiencing

  762. the gospel

  763. receiving the

  764. gospel with

  765. joy

  766. in spite of

  767. much

  768. suffering

  769. the church

  770. which formed

  771. in this

  772. pressure cooker

  773. of a

  774. short

  775. intense

  776. time

  777. with much

  778. persecution

  779. became an

  780. example to

  781. all the

  782. churches in

  783. the surrounding

  784. areas

  785. verse 7

  786. of 1

  787. Thessalonians

  788. 1

  789. tells us

  790. so it

  791. made rapid

  792. progress

  793. there

  794. and it

  795. was also

  796. revered

  797. and propagated

  798. the progress

  799. was rapid

  800. because of

  801. the way

  802. they received

  803. God's word

  804. 1 Thessalonians

  805. 2

  806. 13

  807. says

  808. they received

  809. the word

  810. of God

  811. not as

  812. though it

  813. were the

  814. word of

  815. men

  816. but as

  817. it actually

  818. is the

  819. word of

  820. God

  821. they

  822. recognized

  823. what it

  824. was

  825. they

  826. recognized

  827. that this

  828. is God

  829. speaking

  830. they

  831. honored

  832. the Bible

  833. they

  834. honored

  835. the gospel

  836. as they

  837. ought to

  838. as the

  839. very

  840. word

  841. of God

  842. receiving

  843. God's

  844. word

  845. in that

  846. way

  847. they

  848. turned

  849. from

  850. idols

  851. to serve

  852. the

  853. living

  854. and true

  855. God

  856. to wait

  857. for his

  858. son

  859. returning

  860. from

  861. heaven

  862. whom

  863. he

  864. raised

  865. from

  866. the

  867. dead

  868. Jesus

  869. who

  870. delivers

  871. us

  872. from

  873. the

  874. wrath

  875. to

  876. come

  877. they

  878. turned

  879. from

  880. pagan

  881. lifestyles

  882. in that

  883. short

  884. period

  885. of

  886. time

  887. and

  888. then

  889. they

  890. trumpeted

  891. the

  892. gospel

  893. like a

  894. like a

  895. loud brass

  896. instrument

  897. like a

  898. herald

  899. hear ye

  900. hear you

  901. blow the

  902. trumpet

  903. and it

  904. sounded

  905. and it

  906. resounded

  907. through

  908. Macedonia

  909. and

  910. Achaia

  911. isn't

  912. it

  913. encouraging

  914. to

  915. remember

  916. in

  917. days

  918. like

  919. ours

  920. where

  921. the

  922. gospel

  923. often

  924. faces

  925. rampant

  926. secularism

  927. and

  928. indifference

  929. isn't

  930. it

  931. encouraging

  932. to

  933. remember

  934. that

  935. it's

  936. not

  937. always

  938. been

  939. like

  940. that

  941. that

  942. we

  943. can

  944. read

  945. in

  946. the

  947. Bible

  948. of

  949. situations

  950. where

  951. in

  952. just

  953. a

  954. few

  955. weeks

  956. in

  957. just

  958. a

  959. few

  960. days

  961. God

  962. saved

  963. many

  964. many

  965. people

  966. turned

  967. lives

  968. around

  969. changed

  970. communities

  971. changed

  972. families

  973. in

  974. New

  975. Testament

  976. times

  977. and

  978. subsequent

  979. history

  980. there have

  981. been these

  982. periods of

  983. reformation

  984. and of

  985. revival

  986. where

  987. the

  988. Lord

  989. adds

  990. his

  991. blessing

  992. to

  993. the

  994. word

  995. in

  996. a

  997. special

  998. way

  999. and

  1000. turns

  1001. the

  1002. world

  1003. upside

  1004. down

  1005. it's

  1006. thrilling

  1007. to

  1008. realize

  1009. that

  1010. well

  1011. we

  1012. may

  1013. be

  1014. feeling

  1015. a

  1016. spiritual

  1017. depression

  1018. here

  1019. in

  1020. other

  1021. parts

  1022. of

  1023. the

  1024. world

  1025. God's

  1026. word

  1027. is

  1028. speeding

  1029. ahead

  1030. and

  1031. being

  1032. honored

  1033. in

  1034. parts

  1035. of

  1036. Asia

  1037. and

  1038. Africa

  1039. and

  1040. South

  1041. America

  1042. the

  1043. church

  1044. is

  1045. growing

  1046. times

  1047. are

  1048. hard

  1049. here

  1050. then

  1051. perhaps

  1052. but

  1053. God's

  1054. word

  1055. is

  1056. still

  1057. having

  1058. an

  1059. impact

  1060. even

  1061. in

  1062. the

  1063. ones

  1064. and

  1065. twos

  1066. but

  1067. who

  1068. knows

  1069. that

  1070. through

  1071. our

  1072. prayers

  1073. God

  1074. may

  1075. even

  1076. bring

  1077. another

  1078. time

  1079. where

  1080. Scotland

  1081. is

  1082. known

  1083. as

  1084. the

  1085. land

  1086. of

  1087. the

  1088. book

  1089. because

  1090. the

  1091. word

  1092. of

  1093. the

  1094. Lord

  1095. is

  1096. speeding

  1097. ahead

  1098. and

  1099. being

  1100. honored

  1101. a

  1102. third

  1103. thing

  1104. then

  1105. the

  1106. essential

  1107. need

  1108. for

  1109. prayer

  1110. in

  1111. relation

  1112. to

  1113. the

  1114. ministry

  1115. of

  1116. the

  1117. word

  1118. the

  1119. very

  1120. fact

  1121. that

  1122. Paul

  1123. is

  1124. asking

  1125. for

  1126. prayer

  1127. tells

  1128. us

  1129. that

  1130. no

  1131. human

  1132. energy

  1133. or

  1134. activity

  1135. can

  1136. cause

  1137. the

  1138. word

  1139. of

  1140. God

  1141. to

  1142. go

  1143. forward

  1144. like

  1145. that

  1146. he

  1147. directs

  1148. this

  1149. prayer

  1150. to

  1151. almighty

  1152. God

  1153. who

  1154. alone

  1155. can

  1156. provide

  1157. that

  1158. dynamic

  1159. power

  1160. that

  1161. divine

  1162. omnipotence

  1163. why

  1164. is such

  1165. power

  1166. necessary

  1167. why

  1168. won't

  1169. the

  1170. gospel

  1171. make

  1172. progress

  1173. just

  1174. because

  1175. it's

  1176. true

  1177. simply

  1178. put

  1179. it is

  1180. because

  1181. our

  1182. sinful

  1183. human

  1184. hearts

  1185. have

  1186. no

  1187. native

  1188. desire

  1189. for

  1190. God's

  1191. truth

  1192. back

  1193. to

  1194. 2

  1195. Thessalonians

  1196. 3

  1197. not

  1243. mean

  1244. evil

  1245. in a

  1498. the

  1499. power

  1500. of

  1501. the

  1502. air

  1503. the

  1504. spirit

  1505. that's

  1506. at

  1507. work

  1508. in

  1509. the

  1510. sons

  1511. of

  1512. disobedience

  1513. Paul

  1514. says

  1515. we all

  1516. walked

  1517. that

  1518. way

  1519. once

  1520. upon

  1521. a

  1522. time

  1523. by

  1524. nature

  1525. we

  1526. were

  1527. all

  1528. children

  1529. of

  1530. wrath

  1531. we

  1532. all

  1533. had

  1534. minds

  1535. set

  1536. on

  1537. the

  1538. things

  1539. of

  1540. the

  1541. flesh

  1542. which

  1543. were

  1544. hostile

  1545. to

  1546. God

  1547. why

1548. Lord won't speed ahead by natural means because we're gripped in supernatural darkness by nature

1549. spiritually blind living in a black world where Satan fills our minds with with his lies and his

1550. deceit in order to keep us in utter darkness the word of the Lord speeds ahead then and is honored

1551. only as the spirit of God converts hearts opens blind eyes and stops deaf ears so that they may

1552. turn from darkness to light and the power of Satan to God so that they may receive forgiveness of sins

1553. and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in Christ

1554. perhaps you are a person who hates God and actively opposes the gospel

1555. or perhaps you're a person who sits quietly in church year after year

1556. mouthing Christian words but staying spiritually dead and blind politely hostile to God

1557. you don't need to stay in that condition forever God's word tells his people to pray

1558. so that the word would have a penetrating life-changing effect in people just like you

1559. the Christians around you even in this very room have been praying for people just like you

1560. look into almighty God that he would take this gospel message and drive it into your spiritually dark hearts

1561. God is willing and able to save people just like you

1562. add your cry then as the Christians plead with him to make his word effective add your cry for mercy

1563. determine that with his help you're going to turn your back on sin

1564. because he has never yet turned away a soul who responded to Christ's call with sincere faith

1565. and repentance God has charged us with calling down his almighty power to make the gospel effective

1566. in hearts like yours and those of us a Christian have sat where you sit

1567. those of us who are already believers have sat in that darkness

1568. and it's only by this divine miracle

1569. that we have come to value God's word

  1570. in this way

  1571. it happened to us

1572. like it happened to those Thessalonians

  1573. as Christians

1574. it is right that we should seek opportunity to share God's word

  1575. outreach activities

  1576. regular meetings

  1577. conversations in daily life

1578. but we have to remember that none of these things

1579. achieve anything unless the Lord adds

  1580. his blessing

1581. unless the Lord builds the house

  1582. they labor in vain

  1583. who build it

1584. but let this be our encouragement

  1585. to pray hard

  1586. and to preach hard

  1587. there's power available here

1588. for all the obstacles to unbelief that we see

1589. in the world around us

  1590. Jesus has said

1591. I will build my church

1592. the gates of hell will not prevail against it

1593. this work of gospel transformation

1594. is ultimately in the hands of one who is seated far above

  1595. all rulers and authorities

1596. all the spiritual powers of wickedness

1597. all those spiritual evils in heavenly places

  1598. far beneath his feet

1599. and he has all authority in heaven on earth

1600. including the authority to give eternal life

  1601. to whoever he chose

1602. remember then that Christ doesn't always do his work

1603. doesn't always build his church

  1604. at the same rate

  1605. in every place

  1606. every time

1607. this work that took a matter of weeks in Thessalonica

  1608. took 18 months

  1609. in Corinth

  1610. and two years

  1611. in Ephesus

  1612. in our own lives

1613. we know there are times when God's word comes with dynamic power

1614. and there are other times where we seem

1615. to be going through a bog or a marsh

  1616. everything is slow

  1617. progress is slow

1618. there are times of refreshing

1619. that come from the presence of the Lord

1620. but there are dry seasons

  1621. and wilderness experiences too

1622. we have to preach the word out of season

1623. as well as in season

1624. we wish we were always reaping

1625. but there are times of plowing

  1626. and sowing

  1627. and watering

  1628. and waiting

1629. and yet is it not

1630. the hope of an abundant harvest

  1631. that motivates the farmer

  1632. to keep on

  1633. in his work

1634. when the progress is slow then

1635. and the word is despised by the masses

1636. let us remember that we have a weapon here in prayer

  1637. that can change

  1638. that situation

  1639. can turn it around

1640. so that by calling on the Lord

1641. he can turn the tide

1642. and his word can once more

  1643. go forward

  1644. quickly

  1645. and powerfully

1646. one day winter will give way to spring

1647. one day the seasons of decline

1648. will give way to seasons

  1649. of new growth

  1650. finally

  1651. reflecting on this

1652. is there not some great wisdom

1653. in the age old advice

1654. people used to give the advice

1655. when you become a Christian

  1656. prioritize the Sunday meetings

1657. that's where the preaching is done

  1658. prioritize the midweek meeting

1659. that's where we join together

  1660. to pray

1661. to get behind the preacher

1662. to call God's blessing down

  1663. I can't think of greater advice

  1664. it seems to me

  1665. that that rings true

  1666. that proves true

  1667. perhaps you've proved

  1668. that true

  1669. we cannot simply

  1670. be content

1671. with listening to the preaching

1672. we can't simply be content

  1673. with a group fellowship

  1674. midweek

  1675. we're about God's business

  1676. we're about the advance

  1677. of his kingdom

1678. and that means we need

1679. these two sides of the coin

1680. the preaching and the praying

1681. and we need to be in that

  1682. together

1683. we want to make sure

1684. that we're not going through

  1685. the motions of hearing

  1686. God's word

  1687. without seeking

  1688. his blessing

  1689. both

  1690. for

  1691. ourselves

  1692. and for others

  1693. God is willing

  1694. to answer our prayers

  1695. this is a prayer

  1696. that he's inspired

  1697. by his spirit

  1698. it's the spirit

  1699. who tells us

  1700. to pray like this

  1701. can we not go

  1702. confident

  1703. of God's willingness

  1704. faithfulness

  1705. to listen

  1706. to such a prayer

  1707. and in his way

  1708. and in his time

  1709. to answer

  1710. finally brothers

  1711. pray for us

  1712. that the word

  1713. of the Lord

  1714. may speed ahead

  1715. and be honoured

  1716. as happened

  1717. among you

1718. and that we may be

  1719. delivered from evil men

  1720. for not all

  1721. have faith

  1722. and I'm sure

  1723. Paul could say

  1724. of this congregation

  1725. as he said

  1726. of the church

  1727. we have confidence

  1728. in the Lord

  1729. that you are doing

  1730. and will continue

  1731. to do

  1732. that which the Lord

  1733. commands

  1734. Amen
