  1. Again, my name is Chris. I'm on the pastoral staff here.

  2. You're just, again, very welcome if you're new here.

  3. Ramadan started last week. I don't know if you knew.

  4. I don't know if you're celebrating.

  5. Shavuot, the Jewish festival of weeks, started yesterday.

  6. A month ago, it was Buddha's birthday.

  7. And on Friday, the European football championship started.

  8. We live in a world of competing religions

  9. and a world of competing traditions and cultures.

  10. And we live in a globalized, global city of Hong Kong

  11. where we're surrounded by cultures that even 100 years ago

  12. you'd have only read about in a textbook.

  13. And, you know, I go into Kennedy Town

  14. and there's an Egyptian fish and chip shop.

  15. There's a Hong Kong pizza place.

  16. I went to Cheung Chao the other day.

  17. There's a restaurant called Morocco's which sells Indian and Thai food.

  18. I mean, multiculturalism.

  19. There's this mix of nations coming together in this one city.

  20. And us sitting here, just as you listen to the different languages,

  21. we're a mix of nations which have come together to one place.

  22. And God has placed us in a city,

  23. and this is increasingly true of cities around the world,

  24. where there are now opportunities for nations

  25. which would have never heard the gospel of Jesus Christ

  26. to come in contact with us.

  27. People who would never have heard it in their home country

  28. have come and are coming to cities like Hong Kong.

  29. Watermark we planted five and a half years ago.

  30. And right at the heart of our DNA is that we're a church

  31. which is not just about making life comfortable for ourselves,

  32. but the way that a church is healthy and fruitful

  33. and every individual Christian will flourish and grow

  34. is if you're living for something bigger than just yourself.

  35. that each of us has a deep longing inside of us

  36. for some kind of purpose,

  37. to do something meaningful with our lives.

  38. And I listen to so many people,

  39. and they tell me,

  40. I just don't know what I'm supposed to be here for.

  41. And God has placed a desire in our hearts

  42. because he says,

  43. I want to call you as a church,

  44. as individual Christians,

  45. to something which is so much bigger

  46. and greater than your mission for your life.

  47. I want to call you to my mission.

  48. And my mission is to go and make disciples of all the nations.

  49. It's a global vision.

  50. That's why we believe in church planting here at Watermark,

  51. because we believe this mission

  52. is something which is greater than what our own desires are.

  53. And so we've been looking in this series at Isaiah,

  54. at mission.

  55. And Isaiah is this just amazing invitation

  56. for us to join in with what God is up to in the world.

  57. And it's an invitation that you don't want to kind of RSVP maybe to.

  58. It's one you want to get on board with,

  59. because what we've seen over the last few weeks

  60. is that the mission starts when you find

  61. that God is soul-quenchingly satisfying to the thirst that we all have.

  62. And when you know that God satisfies your thirst,

  63. then you go out to a thirsty world

  64. which is hungry and looking for something,

  65. and you can say,

  66. look to Christ because he is satisfying.

  67. We've looked at how we all have a craving for acceptance and belonging,

  68. and Jesus dying on the cross welcomes us as outsiders into a family

  69. so that we can be those who welcome outsiders into his family.

  70. We've looked at how God reached out to us in our spiritual poverty

  71. so that we could be people who reach out to those

  72. who are also poor and disadvantaged.

  73. And if you're a Christian, here's the point,

  74. if you're a Christian,

  75. you cannot, cannot enjoy God as he wants you to enjoy him

  76. if you don't get on his mission.

  77. Because to not overflow with the love that you have received to others

  78. is like finding a cure for cancer and keeping it to yourself.

  79. Every Christian is a missionary.

  80. And so that's what we're going to look at today.

  81. Every Christian is a missionary.

  82. Now, I don't know about you,

  83. but I kind of have this problem with the word missionary

  84. because when I think of missionary,

  85. I think of guys in kind of oversized hats

  86. with like ridiculous moustaches,

  87. kind of walking into exotic countries,

  88. telling people they're uncivilized heathens,

  89. and then forcing them to convert to Christianity,

  90. taking their land away at the same time,

  91. and then thinking they're doing God's will

  92. because now the natives will have Jesus

  93. and they've all got to have tea time at five o'clock

  94. because that's what God likes.

  95. You see, I'm British.

  96. And God obviously likes British things.

  97. But my guard once said to me,

  98. he said when I started talking to him about Christianity,

  99. he said,

  100. Christianity, that's a foreign religion.

  101. We Chinese, we have our own religions, thank you.

  102. We don't need Western people like you

  103. imposing your way of doing things and thinking on us.

  104. We have got our own things already.

  105. And it's that kind of image that Isaiah

  106. and that world that Isaiah is actually speaking into,

  107. where religion was actually synonymous with power,

  108. self-righteousness, wealth, injustice,

  109. and the people of Israel, God's people,

  110. had lost their vision for what God had called them to be,

  111. which would be the mission and a light

  112. to the nations around them.

  113. So God had brought them down low.

  114. He'd exiled them.

  115. Nations had come.

  116. They'd stripped them low.

  117. They'd been exiled in a foreign land

  118. like the Koreans and Chinese

  119. who were shipped off to Japan in the Second World War.

  120. That's kind of what Israel had happened to them.

  121. And it's a dark time.

  122. They're feeling like God has abandoned them.

  123. And some of you know what it feels like

  124. to feel like God may have abandoned you.

  125. But Isaiah comes to them and says,

  126. there's a new day.

  127. There's a new hope.

  128. There's a new vision.

  129. There's a new hope for you.

  130. So here's my two key points I want us to really talk about.

  131. One, the sun has risen, so wake up.

  132. Two, God's vision is global, so look up.

  133. The sun has risen, so wake up.

  134. God's vision is global, so look up.

  135. The sun's risen.

  136. That first verse that we read,

  137. Arise, shine, for your light has come,

  138. and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.

  139. The image here, and I've put in your bulletin chapter 59,

  140. because that comes before,

  141. is it's nighttime.

  142. It's dark.

  143. It's not Hong Kong dark, you know,

  144. where there's so much light pollution

  145. that you can't see the stars.

  146. This is like power cut,

  147. complete pitch black darkness.

  148. Some of us watermark men,

  149. we went on a blind simulation.

  150. I don't know if you've done it.

  151. It's called Dialogue in the Dark.

  152. We went there last year,

  153. and it's pitch black.

  154. You cannot even see your hand in front of you.

  155. And I don't know if you've had experience,

  156. but it's extraordinarily what you do

  157. when you can't see anything.

  158. You see, in this situation,

  159. you start groping men's legs

  160. and hairy hands in front of you

  161. just to kind of feel your way.

  162. And you do kind of stuff

  163. which you'd just be completely ashamed of

  164. if people could see you.

  165. But, you know, it's kind of reassuring

  166. when you begin to grab hold of somebody

  167. because you actually feel like,

  168. oh, I've found somewhere to go.

  169. And the picture Isaiah 59 paints is

  170. the sin of the people of Israel.

  171. It's cut them off from God,

  172. and they're kind of groping around

  173. like blind men,

  174. trying to find some reassurance.

  175. They're lost.

  176. They're purposeless.

  177. They need some direction.

  178. And then suddenly,

  179. up over the Mount of Olives

  180. outside of Jerusalem,

  181. the sun starts rising.

  182. A new day is dawning.

  183. And when the sun rises,

  184. it does a couple of things.

  185. Light, first of all,

  186. it exposes what you've been doing

  187. in the darkness.

  188. You know when you turn the lights on?

  189. If my hand was still on Graham's knee

  190. as the lights came on,

  191. I'd have been pretty embarrassed.

  192. When light comes,

  193. it brings your shame.

  194. It brings the darkness.

  195. It brings the things

  196. which are deep down inside.

  197. It brings them to light.

  198. And that's painful.

  199. You know, you didn't think

  200. your room was dusty,

  201. but then the sun flooded in,

  202. and in the rays of the sunbeams,

  203. you suddenly see

  204. there's a million particles

  205. of dust in your flat.

  206. That's what God's light does.

  207. It reveals the depth of your sin

  208. when you thought you were okay.

  209. But that's not all light does.

  210. Light also comes,

  211. and it dispels darkness.

  212. The sins of the past

  213. that have been revealed

  214. are wiped out.

  215. The despair,

  216. the lossless,

  217. the purposelessness

  218. is a thing of the past.

  219. There is new direction.

  220. There's new hope.

  221. It's a new day.

  222. That's what light does.

  223. Now, every religion in the world

  224. recognizes in some way

  225. that humanity is in darkness.

  226. You know this?

  227. You just turn on the news.

  228. I mean, even last night,

  229. there's violence

  230. at the European football championships.

  231. There's racism.

  232. There's so much suffering

  233. and pain in the world,

  234. and every religion recognizes

  235. that we're in a dark hole

  236. we've dug of our own selfishness,

  237. ignorance, guilt, shame.

  238. It recognizes those things.

  239. But every other religion says

  240. the way out of this hole

  241. that we're in

  242. is to try and climb your way

  243. up to God somehow.

  244. Islam says you have five pillars

  245. if you do them.

  246. That's why you do Ramadan,

  247. because if you do these things,

  248. you'll kind of be able

  249. to get out of the hole

  250. and maybe get up to God,

  251. get up to some salvation,

  252. get up to find some light somewhere.

  253. Buddhism says you've got to meditate

  254. to get enlightened.

  255. And if you meditate enough,

  256. you'll get light,

  257. you'll get out of the hole.

  258. Atheism says,

  259. in the words of the humanist chaplain

  260. of Harvard University,

  261. Greg Epstein,

  262. he says,

  263. we have the potential

  264. for strength,

  265. wisdom,

  266. and love inside of ourselves.

  267. We've just got to tap in

  268. to the potential we have

  269. and pull ourselves out of the mess.

  270. There's no one else to help us.

  271. Whichever way,

  272. whichever religion you take,

  273. it tells you

  274. you've got to get out of the hole

  275. by yourself of the darkness.

  276. And maybe if there's a God,

  277. just kind of hope

  278. he'll give you a hand halfway

  279. if you've been good enough

  280. at climbing.

  281. The problem is,

  282. if you try and climb out

  283. by yourself,

  284. how high is good enough

  285. for God to help you?

  286. And the problem is,

  287. no matter how much you climb,

  288. you know,

  289. we keep seeing to dig

  290. the hole deeper as well

  291. because we keep sinning.

  292. We slip back down.

  293. And either what we do

  294. is when you rely

  295. on your own efforts

  296. to kind of get out of the hole,

  297. you either end up

  298. feeling so much better

  299. than everybody else

  300. who seems to be

  301. a little bit lower than you.

  302. And you kind of look down

  303. and you exclude people

  304. and you feel contempt for them.

  305. Or you,

  306. when you realize

  307. you've slipped back down

  308. and you feel like

  309. you're a failure,

  310. you end up kicking yourself

  311. and think,

  312. oh, I failed again.

  313. But Christianity comes in

  314. and says,

  315. we don't hide

  316. what's in the darkness.

  317. We don't deny,

  318. we don't blame others

  319. and blame the people

  320. out there

  321. for our problems.

  322. We just say,

  323. the way out of the hole

  324. is not if I try

  325. and climb out

  326. because I can't.

  327. I need somebody

  328. to climb into the hole

  329. to come down

  330. to us.

  331. Christianity says,

  332. God came down

  333. to us

  334. because we could not

  335. go up to him.

  336. Your light

  337. has come.

  338. We love God

  339. because he first

  340. loved us.

  341. You know,

  342. when the sun rose

  343. this morning,

  344. what did you do

  345. to make it rise?

  346. Did you send it

  347. a quick kind of

  348. reminder text

  349. just to say,

  350. hey, just in case,

  351. it's kind of six o'clock.

  352. Did you send an email?

  353. Is it a mail?

  354. No.

  355. The sun rises

  356. not because

  357. of your effort

  358. but in spite of you.

  359. It's what the Bible

  360. calls grace.

  361. And this sunrise

  362. in verse two

  363. is God himself,

  364. God's glory.

  365. You see,

  366. the light

  367. that every religion,

  368. every person

  369. is looking for

  370. in the world,

  371. in John 8,

  372. Jesus comes

  373. and he refers

  374. back to this

  375. prophecy of Isaiah

  376. and he says,

  377. I am the light

  378. of the world.

  379. Not just of a few

  380. little religious people.

  381. I'm not just the light

  382. of the guys

  383. who climbed really well

  384. out of the hole.

  385. No,

  386. I am the light

  387. of the world,

  388. even of the British.

  389. He who follows me

  390. will not walk

  391. in darkness.

  392. You'll not stay

  393. in the pit

  394. but will have

  395. the light

  396. of life.

  397. All religions say

  398. you've got to make

  399. your own way

  400. out of the hole.

  401. Christianity says

  402. God made his way

  403. down to us.

  404. On the cross,

  405. Jesus came into

  406. the pit

  407. of our selfishness,

  408. our ignorance,

  409. our pride.

  410. He died our death

  411. when we couldn't

  412. reach him.

  413. He brings us

  414. into relationship

  415. with the God

  416. of the whole universe.

  417. Religion,

  418. even religion

  419. dressed up

  420. in Christian clothes

  421. makes it all

  422. about you,

  423. all about your efforts,

  424. all about what

  425. you've done.

  426. The world

  427. and your salvation

  428. is on your shoulders

  429. but Christianity

  430. says we have

  431. an amazingly

  432. glorious God

  433. and no other God

  434. in any other religion

  435. is like this God

  436. because no other God

  437. would come down

  438. to us.

  439. Your light

  440. has come.

  441. There's no other

  442. salvation

  443. in the whole of history.

  444. Read any religious books,

  445. there is no other God

  446. who does this

  447. as a holy God

  448. of the universe

  449. who comes down

  450. and dies for his people.

  451. There isn't one.

  452. That's why

  453. Christ

  454. is our light.

  455. If you're not a Christian,

  456. Jesus is asking

  457. you,

  458. reaching down

  459. and saying,

  460. will you stop

  461. trying to climb

  462. out of the hole

  463. by yourself,

  464. trying to do your,

  465. get your way up

  466. to kind of make yourself

  467. feel good

  468. and write about yourself

  469. through your work,

  470. through all the other things

  471. that you try and do

  472. and will you let go

  473. of the wall

  474. that you're climbing

  475. and hold on

  476. with a hand of faith

  477. to Christ.

  478. Repent of making life

  479. about you

  480. when actually life

  481. is about

  482. the worship

  483. of the creator God

  484. of the universe.

  485. Pastor John Piper,

  486. he says,

  487. missions exist

  488. because worship doesn't.

  489. You know,

  490. you only praise

  491. something

  492. according to the worth

  493. of the deed

  494. or the person.

  495. when I was about

  496. seven or eight,

  497. I managed to swim

  498. 25 meters.

  499. I told my mom,

  500. that's about all the glory

  501. and recognition

  502. that that deserves.

  503. But you know,

  504. it's the Olympics this year

  505. and if I won the gold medal

  506. at swimming,

  507. which I'm not going to,

  508. then that would deserve

  509. global recognition

  510. because that's a feat

  511. that is worthy

  512. of praise.

  513. But if the God

  514. of the whole universe,

  515. the holy,

  516. awesome God,

  517. creator God

  518. who is so far above us

  519. would choose

  520. to come down

  521. and die on a cross

  522. for you

  523. and for me,

  524. is that not worthy

  525. of global praise?

  526. For millennia,

  527. people have been looking

  528. to get out of the hole,

  529. but Christ has come down.

  530. And so he calls us,

  531. he says,

  532. your light has come.

  533. If you're a Christian,

  534. notice what the response is.

  535. Arise,

  536. wake up,

  537. shine,

  538. your light has come.

  539. You've got to shine

  540. because your light has come.

  541. Now if you're a Christian,

  542. you know some of this.

  543. But,

  544. but it says,

  545. strange,

  546. arise and shine.

  547. Think about it.

  548. If you tell

  549. a reflective surface

  550. to shine,

  551. that's a bit weird.

  552. Right?

  553. Because it just shines

  554. automatically.

  555. Okay?

  556. You see,

  557. normally it's like

  558. the IFC.

  559. You know,

  560. when the sun hits

  561. the windows on the IFC,

  562. you see the light

  563. shining.

  564. Right?

  565. And the picture here

  566. is of the city of Jerusalem

  567. which represents

  568. God's people

  569. shining,

  570. radiating,

  571. reflecting the light

  572. of this amazing God

  573. out to the people,

  574. the nations all around.

  575. That's the image.

  576. But,

  577. why does he command you

  578. to shine?

  579. Well,

  580. because the thing is,

  581. the only way the IFC

  582. will not reflect

  583. the light of the sun

  584. is if it's wrapped

  585. in one of those,

  586. you know,

  587. those green kind of

  588. skyscraper blankets.

  589. Do you know those kind of things

  590. when they're doing the scaffolding

  591. and they kind of wrap them around?

  592. You know,

  593. and Isaiah is saying,

  594. the sun,

  595. Jesus Christ,

  596. has risen on you

  597. so you can't put God

  598. on snooze in your life.

  599. Turn over and wrap yourself

  600. in a blanket

  601. saying,

  602. God,

  603. I quite like the light

  604. but now is not the time

  605. that I want to reflect you.

  606. I don't really want

  607. to wake up now.

  608. I'd like to be comfortable.

  609. I've got a few other things

  610. that I'd like to do

  611. with my life.

  612. Let me just kind of

  613. wrap myself up

  614. a little bit more.

  615. I've got work to do.

  616. I've got kids to get in school.

  617. I've got this.

  618. I've got that.

  619. I've got all these different things

  620. and he says,

  621. wake up.

  622. You say it to your kids

  623. in the morning.

  624. Wake up.

  625. Shine

  626. because you're not

  627. going to experience

  628. the beauty

  629. and the warmth

  630. and the grace

  631. of the sun

  632. if you don't,

  633. if you're hiding

  634. under the blankets.

  635. The preacher Spurgeon

  636. once said,

  637. I believe

  638. that there are

  639. some Christians

  640. who've wasted

  641. a large part

  642. of their lives

  643. for need

  644. of somebody

  645. or something

  646. to wake them up.

  647. He says,

  648. there's more evil

  649. worked in the world

  650. by lack of thought,

  651. by people just being

  652. comfortable with their own lives,

  653. than by downright malice.

  654. There's more good

  655. left undone

  656. through lack of thought

  657. than through any

  658. aversion

  659. to doing good.

  660. Some Christians,

  661. he says,

  662. appear to have been born

  663. in the land

  664. of slumber

  665. and they continually

  666. live in their

  667. native country

  668. of dreams.

  669. They occasionally

  670. rub their eyes

  671. and suppose themselves

  672. to be wide awake.

  673. But they're in

  674. the enchanted ground

  675. and though they know

  676. it not,

  677. they're little better

  678. than sleepwalkers

  679. most of their days.

  680. Are you

  681. a Hong Kong

  682. sleepwalker

  683. who is actually

  684. just loving

  685. the comfort

  686. of your own bed,

  687. your own world,

  688. your own mission?

  689. Because God says,

  690. wake up.

  691. I've got a bigger

  692. calling for you

  693. than your little

  694. tiny vision

  695. of just building

  696. your career.

  697. I've got so much

  698. more than your

  699. tiny vision

  700. of just getting

  701. your kids

  702. into that right school.

  703. I've got something

  704. so much bigger

  705. for you

  706. and I want you

  707. to enjoy me.

  708. I want you to know me.

  709. But if you just

  710. stay in that bed

  711. wrapped up in your blanket,

  712. you're never going

  713. to enjoy the sun.

  714. there's a purpose

  715. in life

  716. and he wants you

  717. to be on his mission.

  718. Wake up.

  719. Some of us,

  720. we've seen the light

  721. but you know,

  722. we've taken steps

  723. and you're busy,

  724. you're active,

  725. you're doing things

  726. in church,

  727. you're doing all this stuff

  728. but it's so easy

  729. that we think

  730. that God has

  731. all these expectations

  732. on us

  733. and we're trying

  734. to meet up

  735. to all the expectations

  736. that we think he has.

  737. So when you hear

  738. God say something

  739. about get on the time

  740. to mission,

  741. it just feels

  742. like another burden,

  743. another kind of heavy weight

  744. that I've got to do.

  745. And you maybe look

  746. at the things

  747. that you've done

  748. or you haven't done

  749. and you feel

  750. you've messed up

  751. and you've failed again.

  752. And so it sounds to you

  753. like I'm telling you

  754. to climb out of the hole again

  755. to kind of make yourself

  756. a better Christian

  757. and God's call to you

  758. is not get on mission

  759. because it will make you

  760. a better Christian.

  761. God's call is

  762. look back to the sun

  763. of God's grace

  764. and God's mercy

  765. because that's,

  766. if you want to radiate the sun,

  767. you look at the sun.

  768. You don't become obedient

  769. to God

  770. by focusing on your sin.

  771. You become obedient

  772. to God

  773. when your sin

  774. leads you to the cross.

  775. You see the depth

  776. of his love,

  777. his grace,

  778. his mercy,

  779. his forgiveness for you

  780. and you respond

  781. in worship

  782. and that's going to leave you

  783. and motivate you

  784. to love him

  785. to get on his mission

  786. more than guilt

  787. or failure ever will.

  788. Wake up.

  789. See the sun.

  790. Your light has come.

  791. Secondly,

  792. there's a global vision.

  793. So look up.

  794. It says,

  795. verse 2,

  796. 3,

  797. For behold,

  798. darkness shall cover the earth

  799. and thick darkness the peoples.

  800. But the Lord will rise upon you

  801. and his glory will be seen upon you

  802. and nations will come to your light

  803. and kings to the brightness of your sunrise.

  804. That's the word of your sunrise.

  805. Lift up your eyes all around

  806. and see.

  807. God's mission was global

  808. before globalization.

  809. And there is

  810. an inauguration of this vision

  811. when Christ,

  812. the light of the world,

  813. comes.

  814. And there will one day

  815. be a completion

  816. of this vision

  817. when Christ returns

  818. and all the nations

  819. will come and bow down

  820. at his feet.

  821. But in the meantime,

  822. in the gap between the cross

  823. and the Christ's return,

  824. Jesus says to his disciples

  825. in Matthew 5,

  826. he says,

  827. You

  828. are the light

  829. of the world.

  830. Did you know that?

  831. He says,

  832. You are the light.

  833. And you think,

  834. But Jesus,

  835. you just said,

  836. You're the light.

  837. And he says,

  838. Yeah, yeah, yeah,

  839. I am the light,

  840. but you,

  841. like the IFC,

  842. are called as my people

  843. because I'm creating

  844. a new people

  845. who have seen this light,

  846. who have a new identity

  847. in Christ

  848. from all the nations.

  849. And you are to reflect

  850. this beautiful image

  851. to a dark world

  852. around you.

  853. A people

  854. who are not

  855. hiding our light

  856. under a basket

  857. or a blanket,

  858. but a people

  859. who are not defined

  860. by our culture,

  861. but are defined

  862. by Christ

  863. and his identity.

  864. As we've said,

  865. we live in a city

  866. which is surrounded

  867. by many nations.

  868. In this church,

  869. we have many nations.

  870. Who here is from

  871. South America

  872. or America?

  873. Who here is from

  874. Europe?

  875. I do count,

  876. even though England

  877. wants to be out of Europe.

  878. Who here is from Asia?

  879. Good proportion.

  880. That's good.

  881. We're in Asia.

  882. Okay.

  883. Who here is from Oceania?

  884. Like, that's Australia,

  885. New Zealand,

  886. if you didn't know.

  887. Okay.

  888. Who here is from Africa?

  889. Okay.

  890. Who here is from Antarctica?

  891. Okay.

  892. Milan thinks he's a penguin,

  893. but,

  894. yeah,

  895. we're a little lacking

  896. on the Antarcticans there,

  897. but you get the point.

  898. God has brought nations

  899. even into this church.

  900. Isn't that incredible?

  901. God wants to open our eyes

  902. to see that his mission

  903. is not just about

  904. kind of getting up

  905. and being more busy

  906. with more activity.

  907. His mission

  908. is about giving you

  909. a new lens

  910. to see the world

  911. around you.

  912. It's a new lens

  913. to see,

  914. and he wants you

  915. to look up

  916. and see what is around you

  917. so that you begin

  918. to see

  919. who God might be

  920. calling you to.

  921. He's bringing

  922. a multi-ethnic people

  923. to himself,

  924. but the lens

  925. through which

  926. you need to see

  927. has a couple of lenses.

  928. I just want to talk

  929. about a couple here.

  930. One lens

  931. through which

  932. will help us

  933. to see the people

  934. that God has placed

  935. around us

  936. is this.

  937. God loves

  938. unity

  939. in diversity,

  940. and God

  941. is making

  942. a people

  943. whose chief identity

  944. is not their culture,

  945. but is Jesus Christ.

  946. The light

  947. that we're drawn to

  948. is Jesus.

  949. That's our centerpiece.

  950. However,

  951. cultural diversity

  952. is beautiful

  953. and celebrated.

  954. I don't know

  955. if you looked

  956. in this passage,

  957. but did you see

  958. there are

  959. Arabic tribes,

  960. you know,

  961. Midian,

  962. Ifa,

  963. Sheba,

  964. that's kind of

  965. Yemen direction.

  966. There are

  967. traders,

  968. that's the ships

  969. of Tarshish,

  970. foreign traders,

  971. all these

  972. formerly enemies

  973. of Israel,

  974. and do you know

  975. what they're bringing?

  976. Sheep,

  977. goats,

  978. camels,

  979. frankincense,

  980. gold,

  981. all kinds of things.

  982. These are the

  983. cultural

  984. and national

  985. treasures

  986. of these tribes,

  987. of these ethnic groups,

  988. and they're offering

  989. them in praise

  990. to God.

  991. You see,

  992. when God

  993. called Adam

  994. to fill the earth,

  995. well,

  996. that's the one

  997. commandment

  998. we've done

  999. pretty well.

  1000. We have

  1001. filled it.

  1002. You know,

  1003. there is,

  1004. we have.

  1005. You know,

  1006. there's languages,

  1007. there's languages,

  1008. and it's not just

  1009. babies,

  1010. okay?

  1011. There's languages,

  1012. there's music,

  1013. there's food,

  1014. there's architecture.

  1015. Every culture,

  1016. language,

  1017. ethnic group

  1018. has wealth

  1019. and beauty

  1020. that when

  1021. the nations

  1022. are drawn

  1023. to Christ,

  1024. that beauty

  1025. is not just

  1026. kind of ignored

  1027. and suddenly

  1028. everyone's become

  1029. monochrome.

  1030. But actually,

  1031. that is glorious.

  1032. Because,

  1033. you know,

  1034. samba

  1035. was never meant

  1036. for the glory

  1037. of Brazil.

  1038. It was meant

  1039. for the glory

  1040. of God.

  1041. The iPhone

  1042. was not meant

  1043. for the glory

  1044. of America.

  1045. It was meant

  1046. for the glory

  1047. of God.

  1048. Dim sum

  1049. was not meant

  1050. for the glory

  1051. of Hong Kong.

  1052. It was meant

  1053. for the glory

  1054. of God.

  1055. And one day,

  1056. that will happen.

  1057. But in the nations,

  1058. when we come,

  1059. we should celebrate.

  1060. Each of us

  1061. has something

  1062. unique

  1063. that God

  1064. has placed

  1065. in us

  1066. because of

  1067. our cultural

  1068. heritage.

  1069. John Piper

  1070. again says it

  1071. like this.

  1072. He says,

  1073. the beauty

  1074. and power

  1075. and praise

  1076. that will come

  1077. to the Lord

  1078. from the diversity

  1079. of the nations

  1080. are greater

  1081. than the beauty

  1082. and power

  1083. that would come

  1084. to him

  1085. if the chorus

  1086. of the redeemed

  1087. were culturally uniform.

  1088. There is more

  1089. depth of beauty

  1090. is felt

  1091. from a choir

  1092. that sings

  1093. in parts

  1094. than from a choir

  1095. that only sings

  1096. in unison.

  1097. Unity in diversity

  1098. is more beautiful

  1099. and more powerful

  1100. than the unity

  1101. of uniformity.

  1102. Do you get that?

  1103. Unity in diversity

  1104. is more beautiful

  1105. and more powerful

  1106. than the unity

  1107. of uniformity.

  1108. So when you look

  1109. around at each other

  1110. when you look

  1111. around at each other

  1112. do you see

  1113. the beauty?

  1114. Because there is

  1115. a picture

  1116. of heaven

  1117. here

  1118. but as his people

  1119. now in the church

  1120. we are called

  1121. to be a foretaste

  1122. a little picture

  1123. not perfect

  1124. that will come

  1125. but a little picture

  1126. and it is

  1127. amazing privilege

  1128. to be an international

  1129. church

  1130. in an international

  1131. city

  1132. and so often

  1133. we fail

  1134. to miss it

  1135. fail to see it

  1136. so let me ask

  1137. when did you last

  1138. celebrate the fact

  1139. that you have got

  1140. people from every

  1141. nation in this place

  1142. in your community

  1143. groups?

  1144. How do you look

  1145. to actually

  1146. thank God

  1147. for the cultural

  1148. differences

  1149. that you have?

  1150. because if you

  1151. want to have

  1152. a mission

  1153. for the nations

  1154. you have to see

  1155. the glory of God

  1156. that he wants

  1157. to transform

  1158. and you need

  1159. to see

  1160. there is a unique

  1161. beauty

  1162. and there are

  1163. some cultures

  1164. you can see

  1165. everyone can see

  1166. the beauty

  1167. more than other

  1168. cultures

  1169. and we all have

  1170. a different view

  1171. there are some

  1172. cultures you think

1173. I can see the beauty

  1174. there are some

  1175. cultures you think

  1176. I'm looking

  1177. but there is

  1178. beauty

  1179. and if you want

  1180. to get a vision

  1181. for the nations

  1182. you have to see

  1183. where the beauty is

  1184. that's one lens

  1185. the second lens

  1186. though

  1187. is every culture

  1188. is in darkness

  1189. that's what it says

  1190. the nations

  1191. are covered

  1192. with like

  1193. thick clouds

  1194. so the sun

  1195. is blocked out

  1196. from reaching it

  1197. that's the language

  1198. there

  1199. there is evil

  1200. and idolatry

  1201. in every culture

  1202. one culture

  1203. is not better

  1204. than another

  1205. I mean just

  1206. look around

  1207. look at

  1208. the caste system

  1209. which is still

  1210. which is illegal

  1211. but still exists

  1212. in India

  1213. look at ISIS

  1214. and the stuff

  1215. that's going on

  1216. in Syrian refugees

  1217. look at the racism

  1218. that's going on

  1219. in Europe

  1220. and America

  1221. and all the strong

  1222. anti-immigrant feeling

  1223. look at the tensions

  1224. in Hong Kong

  1225. and the mainland

  1226. look at

  1227. you know

  1228. I walked into a shop

  1229. in Central

  1230. and the shopkeeper

  1231. spoke to me

  1232. very politely

  1233. behind me

  1234. was someone

  1235. like an Indonesian

  1236. helper

  1237. and suddenly

  1238. her tone

  1239. of shopkeeper

  1240. changed completely

  1241. there was a look

  1242. there was a tone

  1243. which said

  1244. you are not worth

  1245. something

1246. every one of our cultures

  1247. has a darkness

  1248. of a racism

  1249. of a self-importance

  1250. and the church

  1251. is called

  1252. to be a different

  1253. light

  1254. the reason is

  1255. in the darkness

  1256. every culture

  1257. needs the gospel

  1258. religion telling yourself

1259. to get out of the hole

1260. is not going to do it

  1261. the gospel

  1262. has the resources

  1263. to say to every

  1264. single culture

  1265. there is beauty

  1266. but there is also

  1267. brokenness

  1268. you need a light

  1269. you need a savior

  1270. and the thing

  1271. is for me

1272. I can be so indifferent

  1273. to the darkness

1274. that I see around me

  1275. so wrapped up

  1276. in my world

  1277. in my work

1278. and all those other things

  1279. that I haven't woken up

  1280. to see the darkness

  1281. here

  1282. or I can find

  1283. my identity

  1284. so much

  1285. in my own culture

  1286. that I don't see

  1287. the need

  1288. of the gospel

  1289. I only see

  1290. the things

  1291. that I dislike

  1292. I don't see myself

  1293. as particularly racist

  1294. or nationalistic

  1295. I grew up

1296. in an all white town

  1297. but a second family

  1298. was a beautiful family

  1299. from an Angolan family

  1300. who were refugees

  1301. I've taught people

  1302. from pretty well

  1303. every country

  1304. in the world

  1305. I'm married

  1306. to someone

  1307. from Hong Kong

  1308. I have friends

  1309. in every continent

  1310. except Antarctica

1311. but I used to teach

  1312. in a place

  1313. with a lot

  1314. of Muslim students

  1315. from the Arab world

  1316. and our staff room

  1317. was right next

  1318. to the bathroom

  1319. and break time

  1320. would come

  1321. and while we were

  1322. trying to relax

1323. just get a few minutes

  1324. break before I had

  1325. to teach another lesson

  1326. suddenly

  1327. through the door

  1328. and the wall

  1329. I would hear this

  1330. and then again

  1331. for ten minutes

  1332. and I would go

  1333. into the bathroom

1334. because you need to go

1335. and it would be covered

  1336. like I mean

  1337. Noah's Ark

  1338. could have floated

  1339. on the water there

1340. because of the ritual washings

1341. that had been going on

  1342. it had soaked

  1343. the whole floor

1344. and I'm kind of skating around

  1345. thinking

  1346. I can't believe this

  1347. I can't believe

  1348. these kind of people

  1349. so inconsiderate

  1350. they

  1351. are disgusting

  1352. that's what I thought

  1353. disgusting

  1354. now

  1355. to my mind

1356. did I kind of think

  1357. well actually

1358. I may be the only Christian

  1359. that these people

  1360. have ever met

  1361. in their entire lives

  1362. what an opportunity

  1363. to share the gospel

  1364. with these people

  1365. was that a thought

1366. that came to my mind

  1367. not even close

1368. didn't even cross my mind

1369. all I could think about

  1370. was

  1371. and how these guys

  1372. were making

  1373. my bathroom break

  1374. just so much worse

  1375. than I thought

  1376. it should be

  1377. because you see

  1378. it's not that

  1379. there are things

  1380. that don't annoy you

  1381. in other cultures

  1382. there are

  1383. some are

  1384. just neutral

  1385. cultural things

  1386. some are sin things

  1387. some are

  1388. you know

  1389. it's a whole mix

  1390. of things

  1391. but I would

  1392. I would

1393. even with the other teachers

  1394. we'd kind of

  1395. knowingly

  1396. you know

  1397. there's that

  1398. there's that kind of

  1399. knowing look

  1400. do you know

  1401. when someone comes past

  1402. that kind of

  1403. superiority thing

  1404. oh it's them

  1405. do you know

1406. you know that kind of thing

  1407. British are experts

  1408. I don't

  1409. you know

  1410. we've taught the world

  1411. you know

  1412. it's

  1413. it's called self-righteousness

  1414. and that's how

  1415. I was responding

  1416. and you know

  1417. the reason why

  1418. I'm sometimes

  1419. blinded to see

  1420. the people around me

  1421. and the opportunities

  1422. that there are

  1423. around me

  1424. is because

  1425. sometimes I don't like

  1426. the differences

  1427. in culture

  1428. it's sometimes

  1429. uncomfortable

  1430. it sometimes

  1431. offends

  1432. what my own culture

  1433. holds as important

  1434. you know

  1435. British culture

  1436. doesn't do that

  1437. but when

  1438. someone

  1439. offends

  1440. what your culture

  1441. judges as

  1442. appropriate behavior

  1443. we end up

  1444. judging them

  1445. and thinking

  1446. we're culturally

  1447. superior to them

  1448. and we often

  1449. end up excluding

  1450. and then we have

  1451. comments

  1452. then we have looks

1453. and when we do that

  1454. what I've done

  1455. is I've begun

  1456. to find my identity

  1457. in my culture

  1458. more than in Christ

  1459. and I've blinded me

  1460. to seeing other

  1461. people's need

  1462. for the gospel

  1463. because I think

  1464. I'm actually a little

  1465. bit higher out of

1466. that hole than they are

  1467. they're obviously

  1468. so deep

  1469. too deep for Jesus

  1470. but it's actually

  1471. I mean it's insane

  1472. I think I'm better

  1473. because I'm more polite

  1474. but they could turn

  1475. around to me

  1476. as a British guy

  1477. and say

1478. why are you so bad

  1479. at hospitality

  1480. because actually

  1481. they would open up

  1482. their home

1483. at the drop of a hat

  1484. to have a stranger

  1485. even come in

  1486. with a meal

  1487. and if you go

  1488. in the UK

  1489. to invite a stranger

  1490. into your home

  1491. is like inviting

  1492. a terrorist to tea

  1493. it's like

  1494. you know

  1495. it's like

  1496. you don't do it

  1497. but every culture

  1498. has brokenness

  1499. our greatest need

  1500. and the greatest need

  1501. of the people

1502. who you see around you

  1503. isn't more politeness

  1504. that will be nice

  1505. sometimes

  1506. particularly when

  1507. you're on the MTR

  1508. but that's not

  1509. the greatest need

  1510. of people around us

  1511. the greatest need

  1512. we all

  1513. every culture

  1514. needs

  1515. the light

  1516. and when we've forgotten

  1517. when I act

  1518. with that self-righteousness

  1519. I'm saying

  1520. my righteousness

  1521. is not in Christ

  1522. I'm saying

  1523. that I've forgotten

  1524. that Christ

  1525. came down

  1526. into my

  1527. darkness

  1528. crossed over

  1529. the greatest

  1530. cultural barrier

  1531. between heaven

  1532. and a pit

  1533. of racism

  1534. a pit of segregation

  1535. a pit of hurt

  1536. a pit

  1537. where we just

  1538. we just

  1539. love the idea

  1540. of tolerance

  1541. but we hate

  1542. the idea

  1543. of actual people

  1544. right

  1545. we love the notion

  1546. of tolerance

  1547. until you actually

  1548. meet people

  1549. who are just

  1550. not like you

  1551. but the gospel

  1552. has resources

  1553. to level the ground

  1554. and it tells us

  1555. I can't base

  1556. my identity

  1557. on my culture

  1558. because the culture

  1559. is both beautiful

  1560. and broken

  1561. I need to see

  1562. when I'm faced

  1563. with that

  1564. my own need

  1565. of grace

  1566. I'm not defined

  1567. by my culture

  1568. I'm defined

  1569. by an amazing God

  1570. who is worthy

  1571. of universal

  1572. worship

  1573. that's what

  1574. we proclaim

  1575. and you know

  1576. even as an

  1577. international church

  1578. it's very possible

  1579. for us to be

  1580. international

  1581. but still segregated

  1582. because we still

  1583. have attitudes

  1584. in our hearts

  1585. we're actually

  1586. deep down

  1587. even though

  1588. we don't say

  1589. we kind of

  1590. think we're better

  1591. and Christ says

  1592. the gospel

  1593. changes that

  1594. you're a new people

  1595. you're united

  1596. in me

  1597. celebrate the culture

  1598. where there's

  1599. difference

  1600. remember grace

  1601. remember grace

  1602. because Christ

  1603. crossed that

  1604. barrier for you

  1605. I know

  1606. that we all

  1607. have stereotypes

  1608. you know

  1609. stereotypes

  1610. are natural

  1611. we all generalize

  1612. you know

  1613. we all generalize

  1614. we generalize

  1615. because we have

  1616. to survive

  1617. you know

  1618. if you see

  1619. three English guys

  1620. all drinking tea

  1621. at five o'clock

  1622. you assume

  1623. that all English

  1624. guys drink tea

  1625. at five o'clock

  1626. right

  1627. you know

  1628. we do that

  1629. yeah

  1630. and you see

  1631. another guy

  1632. and then

  1633. it just kind of

  1634. confirms

  1635. your stereotypes

  1636. but when

  1637. your stereotypes

  1638. stop you

  1639. loving the people

  1640. that God has

  1641. placed you

  1642. around you

  1643. and you withdraw

  1644. from them

  1645. that's when

  1646. you see the gospel

  1647. as you've forgotten

  1648. the gospel

  1649. you've forgotten

  1650. the gospel

  1651. and the cross

  1652. because Jesus

  1653. crossed that

  1654. cultural barrier

  1655. for you

  1656. will call you

  1657. to cross

  1658. maybe even

  1659. in this church

  1660. there are people

  1661. that you have

  1662. never gone up to

  1663. because you're

  1664. actually just afraid

  1665. you don't know

  1666. what to say

  1667. you don't know

  1668. what to do

  1669. and why don't you

  1670. start and reach out

  1671. and just say

  1672. hi

1673. I'd love to find out

  1674. about your culture

  1675. because that's

  1676. where when we

  1677. begin to see

  1678. the beauty

  1679. we begin to

  1680. God begins

  1681. to open our eyes

  1682. and we begin

  1683. to be a light

  1684. in this dark place

  1685. which is segregated

  1686. so terribly

  1687. in so many ways

  1688. so practically

  1689. what does this mean

  1690. I think one thing

  1691. get curious

  1692. get curious

  1693. get curious

  1694. think about the people

  1695. in your offices

  1696. think about where

  1697. you're going on holiday

  1698. think about the business

  1699. trips that you take

  1700. you may be going

  1701. into places

  1702. and meeting people

  1703. and their cultures

  1704. where they've never

  1705. heard the gospel

  1706. or they think

  1707. they know the gospel

  1708. but they're actually

  1709. just religiously

  1710. trying to climb

  1711. their way

  1712. out of the pit

  1713. and you may be

  1714. the only light

  1715. of grace

  1716. that they see

  1717. so get curious

  1718. about their culture

  1719. show an interest

  1720. because you can say

1721. my God is a God

  1722. who loves cultures

1723. why don't you get curious

  1724. and go and chat

  1725. to Amelia afterwards

  1726. and find out

1727. about what she's up to

  1728. we have a Mandarin

  1729. ministry

  1730. in Watermark

  1731. if you speak Mandarin

  1732. there are a million

  1733. Mandarin speakers

  1734. in Hong Kong

  1735. many of whom

  1736. have never heard

  1737. the gospel

  1738. what an amazing

  1739. opportunity

1740. for us to be here

  1741. and be involved

1742. go and talk to David

1743. or one of the guys

  1744. who are involved

  1745. in the Mandarin ministry

  1746. come and see me

1747. when you go on holiday

  1748. this summer

1749. some of you are going to go

1750. why don't you get your kids

  1751. if you go on

  1752. get your kids

  1753. to actually research

  1754. how many people

  1755. are Christians

  1756. in that country

  1757. what's the church

  1758. like in that country

  1759. what's the religions

  1760. like in that country

  1761. because when we get

  1762. curious about things

  1763. God begins to open

  1764. our eyes

  1765. to see the need

  1766. God has given us

  1767. as a church

  1768. a unique privilege

  1769. to impact nations

  1770. some of you

1771. are going to transition out

  1772. and God's going to

  1773. transition you

  1774. to other nations

  1775. that is a great

  1776. missionary call

  1777. to a new place

  1778. and it's not that

1779. we have to go in

  1780. and just lambast

  1781. everyone with the gospel

  1782. it's there we go

  1783. as a light

  1784. showing grace

  1785. and reaching out

  1786. to them

  1787. and in that process

  1788. of doing that

  1789. and asking about

  1790. somebody else

  1791. we begin

  1792. to then see

  1793. where the gospel

  1794. makes a difference

  1795. in their own lives

  1796. and we call

  1797. people to see

  1798. a God

  1799. who is worthy

  1800. of worship

  1801. final thing

  1802. this vision

  1803. the last book

  1804. of the Bible

  1805. Revelation

  1806. do you know

  1807. Isaiah 60

  1808. is in the last

  1809. book of the Bible

  1810. Revelation

  1811. 21

  1812. 22

  1813. it says

  1814. that heaven

  1815. the new creation

  1816. God

  1817. will be

  1818. the sun

  1819. and the light

  1820. because there will be

  1821. no more need

  1822. for light

  1823. because God alone

  1824. will be the light

  1825. of every nation

  1826. and it says

  1827. the kings

  1828. who represent cultures

  1829. will come in

  1830. God

  1831. is the one

  1832. who is worthy

  1833. of our worship

  1834. he's worthy

  1835. of the people

  1836. in your office

  1837. knowing about him

  1838. will you wake up

  1839. will you look up

  1840. will you see

  1841. that God

  1842. has got us

  1843. on this trajectory

  1844. where all the nations

  1845. you know

  1846. there's going to be

  1847. samba in heaven

  1848. there's going to be

  1849. hip hop

  1850. there's going to be

  1851. all the cultural

  1852. expressions

  1853. so let's enjoy

  1854. let's see

  1855. let's get on board

  1856. with a God

  1857. who is worthy

  1858. let's pray

  1859. Father I pray

  1860. that right now

  1861. you would show us

  1862. where some of us

  1863. have actually

  1864. I think probably

  1865. all of us

  1866. in different ways

  1867. myself

  1868. so often

  1869. that we actually

  1870. find our identity

  1871. more in our culture

1872. or more in the way

  1873. we think things

  1874. should be done

  1875. than in you

  1876. show us where

  1877. we're blind

  1878. to see the people

  1879. around us

  1880. because we've been

  1881. so wrapped up

  1882. in our little blankets

  1883. open our eyes

  1884. to see that you're

  1885. calling us

  1886. to something greater

  1887. show us

  1888. what that means

  1889. show us

  1890. what the next step

  1891. that you want us

  1892. to take is

  1893. whether it's just

  1894. greeting somebody

  1895. whether it's just

  1896. asking questions

  1897. whether it's actually

  1898. we need to get

  1899. and giving money

  1900. whether it's we need

  1901. to just find out

  1902. whether it's we need

1903. to just see the people

  1904. in our own congregation

  1905. and begin to start

  1906. reaching out

1907. may we be a church

  1908. which

  1909. reflects

  1910. the beauty

  1911. of a God

  1912. who has such

  1913. diversity

1914. may we be a people

  1915. in a world

  1916. of segregation

  1917. and racism

  1918. and self-righteous

  1919. judging

  1920. and pride

  1921. that we don't

  1922. when we see that

  1923. in ourselves

  1924. we just run back

  1925. to the gospel

  1926. may we see that

  1927. Jesus

  1928. you're our only hope

  1929. you're a light

  1930. and may that be

  1931. something beautiful

  1932. in this divided city

  1933. that other people

  1934. will be drawn

  1935. to the worship
