  1. 2 Samuel chapter 7.

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  2. We're going to read right through the chapter.

  3. After the king was settled

  4. in his palace and the Lord

  5. had given him rest from all his enemies

  6. around him, he said to Nathan

  7. the prophet, here I am

  8. living in a palace of cedar

  9. while the ark of God

  10. remains in a tent.

  11. Nathan replied to the king,

  12. whatever you have in mind, go ahead and do it

  13. for the Lord is with you.

  14. That night the word of the Lord came to Nathan

  15. saying, go and tell

  16. my servant David, this is what the Lord

  17. says, are you the one

  18. to build me a house to dwell in?

  19. I have not dwelt in a house

  20. from the day I brought the Israelites

  21. up out of Egypt to this day.

  22. I have been moving from place to place

  23. with a tent as my dwelling.

  24. Wherever I have moved with all

  25. the Israelites, did I ever say

  26. to any of their rulers whom I

  27. commanded to shepherd my people,

  28. Israel, why have you not built

  29. me a house of cedar?

  30. Now then, tell my servant

  31. David, this is what the Lord

  32. almighty says.

  33. I took you from the pasture

  34. and from following the flock

  35. to be ruler over my people,

  36. Israel.

  37. I have been with you wherever

  38. you have gone and I have cut off

  39. all your enemies from before you.

  40. Now I will make your name

  41. great, like the names

  42. of the greatest men on earth.

  43. And I will provide a place

  44. for my people, Israel,

  45. and will plant them so that

  46. they can have a home of their own

  47. and no longer be disturbed.

  48. Wicked people shall not

  49. oppress them anymore

  50. as they did at the beginning

  51. and have done

  52. ever since the time I appointed

  53. leaders over my people, Israel.

  54. I will also give you

  55. rest from all your enemies.

  56. The Lord declares to you

  57. that the Lord himself

  58. will establish a house for you

  59. when your days are over

  60. and you rest with your fathers.

  61. I will raise up your offspring

  62. to succeed you

  63. who will come from your own body

  64. and I will establish

  65. his kingdom.

  66. He is the one

  67. who will build a house

  68. for my name

  69. and I will establish

  70. the throne of his kingdom

  71. forever.

  72. I will be his father

  73. and he shall be my son.

  74. When it is wrong,

  75. I will punish him

  76. with the rod of men,

  77. with floggings

  78. inflicted by men.

  79. But my love

  80. will never be taken away

  81. from him

  82. as I took it away

  83. from Saul

  84. whom I removed

  85. from before you.

  86. Your house

  87. and your kingdom

  88. shall endure

  89. forever before me.

  90. Your throne

  91. shall be established

  92. forever.

  93. Nathan reported to David

  94. all the words

  95. of this entire revelation.

  96. Then King David

  97. went in

  98. and sat before the Lord

  99. and he said,

  100. Who am I,

  101. O sovereign Lord,

  102. and what is my family

  103. that you have brought

  104. me this far?

  105. And as if this were

  106. not enough

  107. in your sight,

  108. O sovereign Lord,

  109. you have also spoken

  110. about the future

  111. of the house

  112. of your servant.

  113. Is this your usual way

  114. of dealing with man,

  115. O sovereign Lord?

  116. What more can David

  117. say to you?

  118. For you know your servant,

  119. O sovereign Lord.

  120. For the sake of your word

  121. and according to your will,

  122. you have done this great thing

  123. and made it known

  124. to your servant.

  125. How great you are,

  126. O sovereign Lord,

  127. there is no one like you

  128. and there is no God

  129. but you,

  130. as we have heard

  131. with our own ears.

  132. And who is like

  133. your people Israel,

  134. the one nation

  135. and earth that God

  136. went out to redeem

  137. as a people for himself

  138. and to make a name

  139. for himself

  140. and to perform

  141. great and awesome wonders

  142. by driving out nations

  143. and their gods

  144. from before your people

  145. whom you redeemed

  146. from Egypt.

  147. You have established

  148. your people Israel

  149. as your very own forever

  150. and you, O Lord,

  151. have become their God.

  152. And now, Lord God,

  153. keep forever the promise

  154. you have made

  155. concerning your servant

  156. and his house.

  157. Do as you promised

  158. so that your name

  159. will be great forever.

  160. Then men will say,

  161. The Lord Almighty

  162. is God over Israel

  163. and the house

  164. of your servant David

  165. will be established

  166. before you.

  167. The Lord Almighty,

  168. God of Israel,

  169. you have revealed this

  170. to your servant

  171. saying,

  172. I will build a house

  173. for you.

  174. So your servant

  175. has found courage

  176. to offer you this prayer.

  177. O sovereign Lord,

  178. you are God.

  179. Your words are trustworthy

  180. and you have promised

  181. these good things

  182. to your servant.

  183. Now be pleased

  184. to bless the house

  185. of your servant

  186. that it may continue

  187. forever in your sight

  188. for you, O sovereign Lord,

  189. have spoken

  190. and with your blessing

  191. the house of your servant

  192. will be blessed forever.

  193. Amen.

  194. And may God add

  195. his blessing

  196. to the reading

  197. of his word.

  198. Here we come to David

  199. and a covenant

  200. that focuses on the king

  201. and his kingdom.

  202. We understand a little

  203. of the importance

  204. of a king

  205. within a kingdom.

  206. Angus McFadgen,

  207. a Scottish actor

  208. and director,

  209. is about to release

  210. a new film

  211. telling something

  212. of the story

  213. of the king

  214. Robert the Bruce.

  215. So 13th century

  216. Scottish king.

  217. It's really interesting.

  218. I read an interview

  219. with him.

  220. He said he wanted

  221. the film to premiere

  222. in Edinburgh

  223. because he believes

  224. that when people

  225. watch the film

  226. Robert the Bruce,

  227. it will shape

  228. national thinking

  229. on issues such as

  230. Brexit and feelings

  231. about Scottish independence.

  232. We might well debate

  233. the influence

  234. that a 700-year-old

  235. Scottish king

  236. might have

  237. on our thinking,

  238. but it's certainly true

  239. that kings

  240. have an important place

  241. to play

  242. in the life

  243. of a nation.

  244. And if it's true

  245. that Robert the Bruce

  246. might influence

  247. our hopes

  248. and expectations

  249. perhaps for independence,

  250. how much more

  251. will King David

  252. and his family

  253. influence

  254. national identity

  255. and the hopes

  256. of Israel

  257. when we think

  258. about the promises

  259. that we just

  260. read about here?

  261. So this is God

  262. continuing

  263. this theme

  264. of establishing

  265. this covenant

  266. with his people.

  267. We've noticed

  268. the progression

  269. if we go back

  270. to the beginning,

  271. perhaps we think

  272. about Abraham.

  273. God established

  274. promise of blessing

  275. and land

  276. and a great name,

  277. blessing to the nations

  278. of the world

  279. through one family.

  280. Then we got

  281. to Moses

  282. and those blessings,

  283. life under the rule

  284. of God

  285. was now extended

  286. to a nation.

  287. Well here,

  288. now we see

  289. that further development

  290. where hopes

  291. are attached

  292. to the king

  293. and the kingdom.

  294. And that's something

  295. we see really clearly

  296. as we continue

  297. reading our Bibles,

  298. the story of Israel

  299. becomes the story

  300. of Israel's king.

  301. The rise and the fall

  302. of the nation

  303. effectively follows

  304. the rise and fall

  305. of kings

  306. and their rise and fall

  307. is always in relation

  308. to obedience

  309. or disobedience

  310. to God.

  311. And as you get

  312. to the point

  313. where their wickedness

  314. becomes so bad

  315. that they're removed

  316. from the land,

  317. so we get to the exile,

  318. then you read

  319. the prophets,

  320. you'll discover

  321. that their hope

  322. for restoration

  323. is very much tied up

  324. with God sending

  325. his king.

  326. And so we're going

  327. to see how

  328. 2 Samuel 7

  329. connects us to that.

  330. And then you think

  331. about the time

  332. of Jesus

  333. and what do we discover

  334. as we read the gospels?

  335. We find that there,

  336. again,

  337. are a people

  338. who are waiting

  339. and who are longing

  340. for this promised king

  341. to come.

  342. They are hoping

  343. for a deliverer.

  344. They're hoping

  345. that God will have

  346. mercy on them

  347. and bring them freedom

  348. and so they're looking

  349. for their king.

  350. And one of the sadnesses

  351. of the gospels

  352. is that the people

  353. that were so looking

  354. for God's king

  355. failed to see Jesus

  356. as God's promised

  357. Messiah king.

  358. He is,

  359. as we saw this morning,

  360. rejected by many.

  361. So our aim this evening

  362. is to look at the covenant

  363. with David,

  364. see the specific,

  365. unique sort of elements

  366. of that

  367. and to see how it points us

  368. ultimately to Jesus.

  369. But the first theme

  370. that I want us to think about

  371. is one that we've seen

  372. in all of the covenants

  373. and it's this,

  374. what O.P. Robertson

  375. calls the Emmanuel principle.

  376. One of the names of Jesus

  377. is Emmanuel,

  378. God with us.

  379. And as we look

  380. at God's words to David,

  381. we see clearly

  382. both that God

  383. is with

  384. and has been with

  385. Israel

  386. and also that he

  387. has been

  388. and will be with

  389. David,

  390. the king.

  391. So first of all,

  392. what does he say

  393. about being with Israel?

  394. Look again at verse 6 and 7.

  395. He says there,

  396. I've not dwelt in a house

  397. from the day I brought

  398. the Israelites up

  399. out of Egypt

  400. to this day.

  401. I have been moving

  402. from place to place

  403. with a tent

  404. as my dwelling

  405. wherever I have moved

  406. with all the Israelites.

  407. So here is a God

  408. who is near

  409. to his people

  410. and that's demonstrated

  411. in the fact

  412. that God condescends

  413. to live in a tent.

  414. He says,

  415. I have always

  416. traveled

  417. with my traveling people.

  418. That's made clear

  419. when you look

  420. at how the people

  421. of Israel

  422. were to camp.

  423. God's tent

  424. was right in the middle

  425. and then the 12 tribes

  426. camped all around.

  427. But God was with

  428. his people

  429. as they

  430. wandered.

  431. And that's a great

  432. act of humility

  433. on God's part.

  434. We were camping

  435. this weekend.

  436. If you've ever been

  437. camping,

  438. you'll know

  439. it's not

  440. the most grand

  441. of surroundings.

  442. It's a fun thing

  443. to do.

  444. But you wouldn't say

  445. camping is something

  446. that's fit for a king.

  447. And when we think

  448. about our God

  449. who lives

  450. in the glory

  451. of heaven,

  452. it's a great

  453. act of humility

  454. that he would

  455. choose to identify

  456. with his people

  457. by dwelling

  458. with them

  459. in this tent.

  460. So God

  461. has been with Israel

  462. but God has also,

  463. he makes clear,

  464. been with David

  465. from the beginning.

  466. Look at verse 8

  467. and 9

  468. in particular.

  469. This is what

  470. the Lord Almighty

  471. says,

  472. I took you

  473. from the pasture

  474. and from following

  475. the flock

  476. to be ruler

  477. over my people Israel.

  478. So when he was just

  479. that young shepherd boy

  480. forgotten by his father,

  481. God was with him.

  482. It led him

  483. on that journey

  484. till he eventually

  485. became ruler.

  486. I have been with you

  487. wherever you have gone

  488. and I've cut off

  489. all your enemies

  490. from before you.

  491. So as king,

  492. God has been

  493. with him.

  494. And we see this

  495. in the story

  496. of 2 Samuel.

  497. 2 Samuel chapter 2,

    2 Samuel 2 chapter mention

  498. by this point

  499. Saul has died.

  500. David is established

  501. as king over Judah.

  502. Then we get to chapter 5

  503. and then he's established

  504. king over the whole

  505. nation of Israel.

  506. In chapter 5

  507. we also see him

  508. conquering Jerusalem,

  509. making that

  510. the central place

  511. for both rule

  512. and worship.

  513. We see him

  514. conquering the Philistines

  515. with God's help.

  516. Then in chapter 6,

  517. an important moment,

  518. God's ark,

  519. God's throne as it were,

  520. is brought to Jerusalem.

  521. So David the king

  522. rules and the ark

  523. is also brought

  524. to Jerusalem

  525. until we get

  526. to the start

  527. of chapter 7

  528. and we see

  529. that the Lord

  530. has established

  531. peace and rest

  532. in the kingdom.

  533. So all of these

  534. moments,

  535. God is saying,

  536. I have been

  537. with you

  538. and he will

  539. continue to be

  540. with David.

  541. Verse 9,

  542. I will make

  543. your name great

  544. like the names

  545. of the greatest

  546. men of the earth.

  547. Remember that promise

  548. to Abraham?

  549. Here it is now

  550. being extended

  551. to David.

  552. And I will provide

  553. a place for my people

  554. and will plant them

  555. so they have a home

  556. of their own.

  557. There's the promise

  558. made to Abraham

  559. and to Moses,

  560. to Israel,

  561. that he would

  562. give them

  563. the promised land

  564. being reestablished

  565. here.

  566. So all of these

  567. ways God is showing

  568. that he is with

  569. his people,

  570. he is with

  571. his king

  572. for his own purpose.

  573. God's purpose

  574. is that his kingdom

  575. will come.

  576. God's purpose

  577. is that

  578. through

  579. David's family,

  580. through the nation

  581. of Israel,

  582. light will come

  583. to the world.

  584. And so here is

  585. this great covenant

  586. promise being made

  587. to David,

  588. it's still a relatively

  589. new king,

  590. and being made

  591. to the nation

  592. once again

  593. to say,

  594. I am with you.

  595. And of course

  596. we see how that

  597. connects to Jesus,

  598. the one who is called

  599. Emmanuel,

  600. the God who is

  601. with us.

  602. And it's important

  603. for us as God's people

  604. to see how this promise

  605. connects to us today.

  606. Remember Jesus said,

  607. I am with you

  608. always

  609. to the very end

  610. of the age.

  611. God is always

  612. with his people.

  613. He's with us

  614. in his son Jesus.

  615. He's with us

  616. by his spirit

  617. who comes to take up

  618. residence in the hearts

  619. of those who trust

  620. in Jesus.

  621. God is with us

  622. in his word,

  623. the Bible.

  624. Whenever we read

  625. the Bible,

  626. we are encountering

  627. the living God.

  628. He is with us

  629. in the sacraments.

  630. When we share

  631. the Lord's Supper,

  632. Jesus is the host

  633. of his supper,

  634. saying to us,

  635. I am here

  636. with you

  637. in order to give you

  638. strength

  639. for your journey

  640. of faith.

  641. Now to say

  642. that God is

  643. with us

  644. is an unbreakable

  645. promise,

  646. but it does not

  647. equal,

  648. God is with us

  649. equals life

  650. will always

  651. go well

  652. for us.

  653. And we understand

  654. that from the story

  655. of David.

  656. David was promised

  657. that he would be

  658. God's chosen king,

  659. the king after

  660. God's own heart,

  661. but yet he experienced

  662. opposition.

  663. Saul wanted him killed.

  664. He had to spend

  665. a lot of time

  666. running for his life.

  667. He experienced

  668. opposition,

  669. rejection from

  670. among his own

  671. countrymen

  672. at different times.

  673. We read the Psalms,

  674. we discover

  675. his story,

  676. we discover

  677. his laments,

  678. we discover

  679. his struggles,

  680. but we also

  681. discover he is a

  682. man who knows

  683. and has built

  684. his life on

  685. this reality.

  686. God is a rock,

  687. God is a refuge,

  688. God is with me

  689. and working his

  690. purposes out.

  691. And just as it

  692. was with David,

  693. so it is for us

  694. as a church now,

  695. God is with us.

  696. Jesus is described

  697. in the Bible

  698. as the bridegroom

  699. of his church.

  700. And Jesus,

  701. the bridegroom,

  702. has made promises

  703. to his church.

  704. In a couple of weeks,

  705. Cailin is a bridegroom,

  706. will stand here

  707. and make promises

  708. to Sarah,

  709. promising to be with

  710. and for her,

  711. for better,

  712. for worse,

  713. for richer,

  714. for poorer,

  715. in sickness and in health.

  716. God does that

  717. in Jesus

  718. for us,

  719. his church.

  720. And nothing will ever

  721. separate us

  722. from that love,

  723. not even death

  724. itself.

  725. And the Lord's Supper

  726. reminds us

  727. of God's commitment

  728. to us,

  729. to be with us

  730. and to be for us.

  731. And so one of the reasons

  732. we gather around

  733. the Lord's table

  734. is that we might

  735. find strength

  736. to be encouraged

  737. to remember

  738. the Lord

  739. who is with us.

  740. So that theme,

  741. the Emmanuel principle,

  742. comes through

  743. in this covenant

  744. as it has done

  745. with all the others.

  746. But there's

  747. unique features here.

  748. A second theme

  749. that comes out strongly

  750. is that of

  751. house building.

  752. So at the beginning

  753. of the chapter,

  754. we were told

  755. here is a nation

  756. at peace.

  757. God has been kind

  758. to Israel,

  759. been kind to David,

  760. given rest

  761. from their enemies.

  762. David lives

  763. in a very grand palace

  764. and he has a wish,

  765. he has a desire,

  766. he wants to build

  767. God

  768. a temple.

  769. So he reports

  770. to Nathan

  771. that plan.

  772. But then the Lord

  773. speaks to Nathan

  774. in verse 5.

  775. This is what the Lord

  776. says,

  777. Are you, David,

  778. the one to build me

  779. a house

  780. to dwell in?

  781. The initiative

  782. doesn't come

  783. from David.

  784. A man

  785. is not the one

  786. who's going to determine

  787. where and how

  788. God will live.

  789. But then God

  790. uses this idea

  791. of house building

  792. and with a really

  793. nice play on words

  794. establishes

  795. covenant commitment

  796. to David

  797. and his family.

  798. Saying to David,

  799. Well, you want

  800. to build me

  801. a physical house?

  802. You want

  803. to build me

  804. a temple?

  805. I, the Lord God,

  806. am going to build

  807. you, David,

  808. a house.

  809. Not a physical

  810. location,

  811. but a family

  812. dynasty.

  813. Look at verse

  814. 11,

  815. second part

  816. of verse 11.

  817. The Lord declares

  818. to you

  819. that the Lord

  820. himself

  821. will establish

  822. a house

  823. for you.

  824. And there,

  825. when we read

  826. house,

  827. we think

  828. royal dynasty.

  829. You know,

  830. think of our queen.

  831. Our queen comes

  832. from the house

  833. of Windsor.

  834. That's been

  835. the royal dynasty

  836. since 1917.

  837. So there's this

  838. rich covenant

  839. promise

  840. that God

  841. is going

  842. to take

  843. the initiative

  844. in order

  845. to establish

  846. David

  847. and his

  848. family

  849. on the

  850. throne

  851. forever.

  852. So verse 12,

  853. when your days

  854. are over

  855. and you rest

  856. with your

  857. fathers,

  858. I will raise

  859. up your

  860. offspring

  861. to succeed

  862. you

  863. and I will

  864. establish

  865. his kingdom.

  866. As Solomon,

  867. Solomon would

  868. sit on the

  869. throne

  870. and God

  871. would establish

  872. David's

  873. kingdom

  874. through

  875. Solomon.

  876. Verse 13,

  877. he is the

  878. one who will

  879. build a house

  880. for my name.

  881. So Solomon

  882. will build

  883. the temple,

  884. will build

  885. God's house

  886. according to

  887. God's timing,

  888. God's plan,

  889. but God

  890. will establish

  891. the throne

  892. of his

  893. kingdom

  894. forever.

  895. So this is

  896. one of those

  897. points in

  898. the Bible

  899. where we see

  900. that God

  901. is speaking

  902. about Solomon

  903. but not just

  904. about Solomon

  905. because as we

  906. know Solomon

  907. is not still

  908. reigning

  909. forever.

  910. This is

  911. speaking about

  912. a son

  913. still to come.

  914. This isn't

  915. talking about

  916. any of Israel's

  917. kings that we

  918. read about

  919. in the Old

  920. Testament.

  921. You think

  922. about verse

  923. 16,

  924. your house

  925. and your

  926. kingdom

  927. shall endure

  928. forever

  929. before me,

  930. your throne

  931. shall be

  932. established

  933. forever.

  934. Now David's

  935. dynasty lasted

  936. for 400

  937. years but

  938. eventually

  939. exile came,

  940. that came

  941. to an end.

  942. This isn't

  943. speaking of

  944. an Old

  945. Testament

  946. reality,

  947. only with

  948. the coming

  949. of Jesus

  950. is this

  951. rule

  952. established,

  953. only with

  954. Jesus is

  955. this king

  956. who lasts

  957. and reigns

  958. forever.

  959. Now but

  960. what God

  961. is doing

  962. here,

  963. he is

  964. connecting

  965. these two

  966. house building

  967. projects in

  968. David's

  969. future son.

  970. There is

  971. one who

  972. will build

  973. the temple,

  974. one who

  975. will reign

  976. for God

  977. and Solomon

  978. is the

  979. beginning of

  980. that promise

  981. being kept

  982. but he's

  983. just,

  984. to use the

  985. image of

  986. Hebrews,

  987. he's just

  988. the shadow,

  989. he's not

  990. the reality.

  991. Solomon's

  992. temple,

  993. Solomon's

  994. rule both

  995. came and

  996. fell,

  997. great though

  998. they were

  999. but not

  1000. Jesus.

  1001. Jesus'

  1002. reign is

  1003. eternal.

  1004. Jesus is

  1005. God's true

  1006. temple,

  1007. Jesus is

  1008. the meeting

  1009. place with

  1010. God.

  1011. If we want

  1012. to know

  1013. God,

  1014. if we want

  1015. to worship

  1016. God,

  1017. we need

  1018. to do

  1019. that through

  1020. Jesus,

  1021. his son

  1022. and Jesus

  1023. is also

  1024. this true

  1025. king who

  1026. comes in

  1027. the line

  1028. of David

  1029. the one

  1030. whose rule

  1031. is eternal.

  1032. When we

  1033. think about

  1034. how to

  1035. apply this

  1036. for ourselves,

  1037. perhaps one

  1038. way that we

  1039. can think

  1040. about this

  1041. is to pray

  1042. that God

  1043. would build

  1044. our houses

  1045. and our

  1046. families,

  1047. not that we

  1048. would be

  1049. great kings

  1050. and mighty

  1051. in human

  1052. terms,

  1053. but that we

  1054. would become

  1055. houses and

  1056. families marked

  1057. by faith.

  1058. I remember

  1059. years ago

  1060. reading of

  1061. Jonathan Edwards,

  1062. the Puritan

  1063. preacher who

  1064. every day

  1065. prayed for

  1066. six generations

  1067. into the

  1068. future for

  1069. his family,

  1070. that they

  1071. would be

  1072. men and

  1073. women of

  1074. faith who

  1075. would follow

  1076. God, who

  1077. would love

  1078. Jesus.

  1079. Great prayer

  1080. to pray that

  1081. God would

  1082. build our

  1083. families on

  1084. faith and

  1085. to work for

  1086. that, that if

  1087. we are parents,

  1088. that we

  1089. would be

  1090. reading the

  1091. Bible with

  1092. our children,

  1093. that we'd

  1094. be praying

  1095. with and

  1096. for them,

  1097. we'd be

  1098. teaching them

  1099. songs full

  1100. of God's

  1101. truth, that

  1102. as a church

  1103. we'd be

  1104. praying for

  1105. our covenant

  1106. children,

  1107. praying that

  1108. each one of

  1109. them would

  1110. come to

  1111. faith, that

  1112. God would

  1113. build houses

  1114. and families

  1115. marked by

  1116. true faith

  1117. in the

  1118. Lord Jesus.

  1119. And also

  1120. as we

  1121. recognize that

  1122. God is

  1123. building the

  1124. kingdom of

  1125. Jesus and

  1126. it's going

  1127. to be

  1128. global, we

  1129. can pray

  1130. that we

  1131. would be

  1132. part of

  1133. that.

  1134. As Ian

  1135. was praying

  1136. in his

  1137. prayer, there

  1138. are many

  1139. ways in

  1140. which we

  1141. can be

  1142. part of

  1143. that.

  1144. We can

  1145. pray for

  1146. the

  1147. missionaries

  1148. that we

  1149. know around

  1150. the world.

  1151. We can

  1152. pray for

  1153. church

  1154. plants around

  1155. Scotland.

  1156. But we

  1157. can also

  1158. be speaking

  1159. to our

  1160. family, to

  1161. our neighbors

  1162. about Jesus

  1163. in the way

  1164. that we

  1165. live in

  1166. our workplace,

  1167. in our

  1168. universities,

  1169. our schools,

  1170. that we

  1171. would want

  1172. to love

  1173. like Jesus,

  1174. that we'd

  1175. welcome

  1176. people the

  1177. way Jesus

  1178. did, to

  1179. pray that

  1180. God's

  1181. kingdom would

  1182. come, that

  1183. others would

  1184. come to

  1185. submit to

  1186. the good and

  1187. loving rule

  1188. of King

  1189. Jesus.

  1190. He's building

  1191. his kingdom

  1192. and we

  1193. have the

  1194. privilege as

  1195. the people of

  1196. God to

  1197. play our

  1198. part in

  1199. that.

  1200. God's

  1201. kingdom.

  1202. The third

  1203. theme that

  1204. we can

  1205. think about

  1206. that's

  1207. unique in

  1208. this covenant

  1209. is the

  1210. idea of

  1211. the long

  1212. life of

  1213. the king.

  1214. Long

  1215. live the

  1216. king.

  1217. when I

  1218. was younger,

  1219. I used

  1220. to enjoy

  1221. watching

  1222. things like

  1223. the Olympics

  1224. or major

  1225. sporting

  1226. events.

  1227. It was

  1228. always one

  1229. of those

  1230. interesting

  1231. things to

  1232. compare and

  1233. contrast the

  1234. different

  1235. national

  1236. anthems.

  1237. I don't

  1238. know if

  1239. people have

  1240. favorite

  1241. anthems.

  1242. I quite

  1243. like the

  1244. rousing,

  1245. the French

  1246. one is

  1247. probably up

  1248. there.

  1249. There's

  1250. an amazing

  1251. variety when

  1252. you listen

  1253. to national

  1254. anthems.

  1255. I don't

  1256. know what

  1257. you think

  1258. of our

  1259. British

  1260. anthem.

  1261. It's

  1262. short and

  1263. it's to

  1264. the point.

  1265. But thinking

  1266. about this

  1267. theme,

  1268. thinking about

  1269. covenant,

  1270. thinking about

  1271. king and

  1272. kingdom,

  1273. our national

  1274. anthem speaks

  1275. to some of

  1276. that.

  1277. So we

  1278. sing long

  1279. live our

  1280. noble queen

  1281. or king.

  1282. We sing

  1283. God save

  1284. our queen

  1285. or king.

  1286. We think

  1287. about victory

  1288. and glory

  1289. and long

  1290. reign.

  1291. And you

  1292. know all

  1293. of those

  1294. things Israel

  1295. would recognize

  1296. and pray for

  1297. their king

  1298. because they

  1299. understood in

  1300. a much

  1301. greater way

  1302. than it was

  1303. even for

  1304. Britain under

  1305. the empire

  1306. as it went

  1307. for the

  1308. king of

  1309. Israel so

  1310. it would go

  1311. for the

  1312. people of

  1313. Israel.

  1314. And one

  1315. of the

  1316. things that's

  1317. significant for

  1318. Israel,

  1319. ultimately

  1320. becomes

  1321. significant

  1322. for us

  1323. is that

  1324. when David

  1325. established

  1326. his rule

  1327. in Jerusalem

  1328. so God

  1329. too had

  1330. his rule

  1331. established

  1332. in Jerusalem

  1333. with the

  1334. coming of

  1335. the ark.

  1336. There was

  1337. this coming

  1338. together

  1339. of God's

  1340. rule

  1341. and the

  1342. king's

  1343. rule.

  1344. And there

  1345. is this

  1346. understanding

  1347. here within

  1348. the covenant

  1349. that David's

  1350. son would

  1351. also be

  1352. God's

  1353. son,

  1354. ruling

  1355. for God

  1356. eternally.

  1357. See verse

  1358. 14.

  1359. I will

  1360. be his

  1361. father

  1362. and he

  1363. shall be

  1364. my son.

  1365. And so the

  1366. great hope

  1367. of the

  1368. covenant with

  1369. David is

  1370. the promise

  1371. of a king

  1372. who is

  1373. God's son

  1374. who will

  1375. reign for

  1376. God

  1377. forever.

  1378. ever.

  1379. And that's

  1380. something that

  1381. goes beyond

  1382. any of

  1383. even the

  1384. great kings

  1385. of the

  1386. Old Testament.

  1387. And when we

  1388. think about

  1389. the promise

  1390. here we can

  1391. understand why

  1392. Israel placed

  1393. so much hope

  1394. on a restored

  1395. king which

  1396. we see at

  1397. the time

  1398. of Jesus.

  1399. In the

  1400. story of

  1401. Israel's

  1402. kings we

  1403. recognize

  1404. that this

  1405. enduring

  1406. rule

  1407. was never

  1408. fulfilled

  1409. because there

  1410. was never

  1411. complete

  1412. obedience.

  1413. Notice

  1414. within this

  1415. covenant

  1416. too there

  1417. is the

  1418. importance

  1419. of

  1420. obedience.

  1421. In verse

  1422. 14

  1423. I will

  1424. be his

  1425. father and

  1426. he shall

  1427. be my

  1428. son.

  1429. When he

  1430. does wrong

  1431. I will

  1432. punish him

  1433. with the

  1434. rod of

  1435. men

  1436. with

  1437. floggings

  1438. inflicted

  1439. by

  1440. men.

  1441. So in

  1442. every covenant

  1443. there is

  1444. always this

  1445. obligation

  1446. for obedience

  1447. and the

  1448. kings were

  1449. no different.

  1450. God is

  1451. saying kings

  1452. could and

  1453. would be

  1454. disciplined.

  1455. They were

  1456. not free

  1457. to ignore

  1458. God and

  1459. when you

  1460. read the

  1461. story of

  1462. the kings

  1463. of Israel

  1464. and Judah

  1465. what you

  1466. see is

  1467. that pattern

  1468. of if

  1469. the kings

  1470. were disobedient

  1471. to God

  1472. then under

  1473. the covenant

  1474. the nation

  1475. would suffer.

  1476. But then

  1477. when there

  1478. was good

  1479. kings the

  1480. nation would

  1481. prosper under

  1482. God because

  1483. of his

  1484. covenant

  1485. commitment.

  1486. For Israel

  1487. ultimately

  1488. David's

  1489. dynasty

  1490. was

  1491. ended.

  1492. You get

  1493. to the

  1494. bad kings

  1495. you get

  1496. to the

  1497. end of

  1498. kingship

  1499. and you

  1500. understand

  1501. the people

  1502. are left

  1503. longing

  1504. for a

  1505. better king

  1506. for a

  1507. greater king

  1508. one who

  1509. would rule

  1510. for God.

  1511. But even

  1512. as

  1513. David's

  1514. family

  1515. would be

  1516. disobedient

  1517. and would

  1518. fail

  1519. there is

  1520. a promise

  1521. that David's

  1522. family line

  1523. would not

  1524. be abandoned.

  1525. See verse 15

  1526. but my love

  1527. will never be

  1528. taken away

  1529. from him

  1530. as I took

  1531. it away

  1532. from Saul.

  1533. So there

  1534. is a promise

  1535. of enduring

  1536. covenant

  1537. faithfulness

  1538. despite the

  1539. faithlessness

  1540. of

  1541. well we can

  1542. begin with

  1543. Solomon.

  1544. So for

  1545. example in

  1546. chapter 11

  1547. verses 11

  1548. to 13

  1549. the Lord

  1550. is angry

  1551. with Solomon

  1552. because his

  1553. heart is

  1554. turned away

  1555. from the

  1556. Lord and

  1557. he's following

  1558. other gods

  1559. and the

  1560. Lord said

  1561. to Solomon

  1562. since this

  1563. is your

  1564. attitude

  1565. and you

  1566. have not

  1567. kept my

  1568. covenant

  1569. which I

  1570. commanded

  1571. you I

  1572. will most

  1573. certainly

  1574. tear the

  1575. kingdom away

  1576. from you

  1577. and give

  1578. it to one

  1579. of your

  1580. subordinates.

  1581. So he's

  1582. been judged

  1583. for covenant

  1584. unfaithfulness

  1585. and disobedience

  1586. nevertheless

  1587. for the

  1588. sake of

  1589. David your

  1590. father I

  1591. will not

  1592. do it

  1593. during your

  1594. lifetime I

  1595. will tear it

  1596. out of the

  1597. hand of your

  1598. son yet I

  1599. will not tear

  1600. the whole

  1601. kingdom from

  1602. him but

  1603. will give him

  1604. one tribe

  1605. for the sake

  1606. of David my

  1607. servant and

  1608. for the sake

  1609. of Jerusalem

  1610. which I have

  1611. chosen.

  1612. The kings

  1613. are unfaithful

  1614. yet God

  1615. remains faithful

  1616. to his

  1617. covenant

  1618. promise.

  1619. As you look

  1620. through the

  1621. Old Testament

  1622. Israel's kings

  1623. even the best

  1624. of them fail

  1625. but the

  1626. promise of

  1627. God remains

  1628. and that's

  1629. why after

  1630. the exile

  1631. the hopes

  1632. of the

  1633. prophets

  1634. was very

  1635. much focused

  1636. on this

  1637. true king

  1638. who would

  1639. come this

  1640. Messiah king

  1641. perhaps the

  1642. most obvious

  1643. place that

  1644. we can think

  1645. about that

  1646. is in Isaiah

  1647. 9 words

  1648. very familiar

  1649. because it's

  1650. so important

  1651. to the story

  1652. of Christmas

  1653. chapter 9

  1654. verse 6

  1655. for to us

  1656. a child

  1657. is born

  1658. to us

  1659. a son

  1660. is given

  1661. and the

  1662. government

  1663. will be

  1664. on his

  1665. shoulders

  1666. and he

  1667. will be

  1668. called

  1669. wonderful

  1670. counselor

  1671. mighty

  1672. God

  1673. everlasting

  1674. father

  1675. prince

  1676. of peace

  1677. of the

  1678. increase

  1679. of his

  1680. government

  1681. and peace

  1682. there will

  1683. be no

  1684. end

  1685. he will

  1686. reign

  1687. on David's

  1688. throne

  1689. and over

  1690. his kingdom

  1691. establishing

  1692. and upholding

  1693. it with

  1694. justice

  1695. and righteousness

  1696. from that

  1697. time on

  1698. and forever

  1699. Isaiah

  1700. and the

  1701. prophets

  1702. were looking

  1703. for no

  1704. ordinary

  1705. king

  1706. they were

  1707. looking

  1708. for God's

  1709. Messiah

  1710. king

  1711. and he

  1712. came

  1713. as Jesus

  1714. Jesus

  1715. is David's

  1716. greater son

  1717. the Bible

  1718. says

  1719. Jesus

  1720. is God's

  1721. promise

  1722. kept

  1723. in the

  1724. sending

  1725. of his

  1726. son

  1727. as the

  1728. eternal

  1729. king

  1730. Jesus

  1731. is the

  1732. only

  1733. king

  1734. who has

  1735. ever

  1736. perfectly

  1737. kept

  1738. all those

  1739. covenant

  1740. obligations

  1741. to rule

  1742. for God

  1743. concerned

  1744. for the

  1745. glory

  1746. of God

  1747. his

  1748. father

  1749. and then

  1750. Jesus

  1751. for his

  1752. people

  1753. dies

  1754. to redeem

  1755. and rescue

  1756. us

  1757. though we

  1758. deserve

  1759. covenant

  1760. curses

  1761. Jesus

  1762. our

  1763. king

  1764. he

  1765. takes

  1766. the

  1767. covenant

  1768. curse

  1769. for us

  1770. so that

  1771. we might

  1772. enjoy

  1773. covenant

  1774. blessing

  1775. and then

  1776. he rises

  1777. and ascends

  1778. to rule

  1779. in the

  1780. glory of

  1781. heaven

  1782. where he

  1783. now sits

  1784. at the

  1785. father's

  1786. right hand

  1787. and he

  1788. will return

  1789. one day

  1790. to establish

  1791. God's

  1792. perfect

  1793. rule and

  1794. reign

  1795. in the

  1796. new

  1797. heavens

  1798. and the

  1799. new

  1800. earth

  1801. until that

  1802. time

  1803. we are

  1804. called

  1805. to trust

  1806. and we

  1807. are called

  1808. to obey

  1809. but then

  1810. as God's

  1811. people

  1812. we will

  1813. live in

  1814. God's

  1815. place

  1816. under

  1817. God's

  1818. good rule

  1819. knowing

  1820. his

  1821. blessing

  1822. and joy

  1823. forever

  1824. with

  1825. Jesus

  1826. as our

  1827. true

  1828. and our

  1829. great

  1830. king

  1831. now how

  1832. does this

  1833. connect

  1834. to the

  1835. Lord's

  1836. Supper

  1837. in a few

  1838. moments

  1839. God's

  1840. people will

  1841. share

  1842. the

  1843. Lord's

  1844. Supper

  1845. what are

  1846. we doing

  1847. and saying

  1848. together

  1849. at the

  1850. Lord's

  1851. table

  1852. well at

  1853. one level

  1854. we are

  1855. confessing

  1856. Jesus

  1857. you are

  1858. my

  1859. king

  1860. we are

  1861. confessing

  1862. our

  1863. trust

  1864. in

  1865. Jesus

  1866. we are

  1867. remembering

  1868. with

  1869. gratitude

  1870. with

  1871. thankfulness

  1872. that Jesus

  1873. has defeated

  1874. our great

  1875. enemies of

  1876. Satan and

  1877. sin and

  1878. death for

  1879. us at

  1880. the

  1881. cross

  1882. we are

  1883. remembering

  1884. with

  1885. thankfulness

  1886. that he's

  1887. brought us

  1888. into

  1889. his

  1890. kingdom

  1891. that he

  1892. has

  1893. established

  1894. the new

  1895. covenant

  1896. in his

  1897. body

  1898. and his

  1899. blood

  1900. so that

  1901. we might

  1902. be part

  1903. of

  1904. God's

  1905. kingdom

  1906. so the

  1907. Lord's

  1908. Supper

  1909. is for

  1910. everyone

  1911. who confesses

  1912. Jesus as

  1913. Lord and

  1914. king

  1915. but we're

  1916. also confessing

  1917. Jesus you're

  1918. the king

  1919. that I

  1920. need

  1921. as we

  1922. come to

  1923. the Lord's

  1924. table

  1925. we don't

  1926. come

  1927. with

  1928. strength

  1929. but rather

  1930. we acknowledge

  1931. that battle

  1932. that's going

  1933. on in our

  1934. hearts

  1935. the war

  1936. that goes

  1937. on where

  1938. we know

  1939. the good

  1940. things that

  1941. we want

  1942. to do

  1943. but we

  1944. struggle to

  1945. do them

  1946. because there

  1947. is that

  1948. sin that

  1949. is present

  1950. within us

  1951. we confess

  1952. our own

  1953. weakness

  1954. the fact that

  1955. we cannot

  1956. save ourselves

  1957. that by

  1958. ourselves

  1959. we don't

  1960. have the

  1961. resources to

  1962. keep going

  1963. in this

  1964. journey of

  1965. faith and

  1966. so we

  1967. come to

  1968. our king

  1969. to provide

  1970. for us

  1971. we confess

  1972. with humility

  1973. that our

  1974. faith rests

  1975. absolutely

  1976. ultimately on

  1977. Jesus'

  1978. work

  1979. Jesus'

  1980. cross work

  1981. and not

  1982. ours

  1983. and we

  1984. come because

  1985. king Jesus

  1986. invites us

  1987. to this

  1988. faith

  1989. he invites

  1990. us to

  1991. his

  1992. table

  1993. to come

  1994. he meets

  1995. with us

  1996. in order

  1997. to give

  1998. us strength

  1999. to feed

  2000. us

  2001. by faith

  2002. and he

  2003. continues

  2004. to meet

  2005. with us

  2006. until

  2007. that day

  2008. when we

  2009. meet with

  2010. him

  2011. when we

  2012. enjoy that

  2013. feast

  2014. at the

  2015. wedding

  2016. feast

  2017. of the

  2018. lamb

  2019. in glory

  2020. it reminds

  2021. us of what

  2022. Jesus has

  2023. done for

  2024. us

  2025. it reminds

  2026. us of

  2027. the promise

  2028. that's laid

  2029. up for

  2030. us

  2031. let it

  2032. all

  2033. fulfill

  2034. because

  2035. Jesus

  2036. comes

  2037. as a

  2038. king

  2039. to

  2040. establish

  2041. his

  2042. kingdom

  2043. common

  2044. to

  2045. come
