  1. In Matthew chapter 15, it's on page 982, if you're using a church Bible.

    Matthew 15 chapter mention

  2. Matthew chapter 15, and we're going to read the whole of this chapter.

    Matthew 15 chapter mention

  3. So let's hear God's Word together.

  4. Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked,

  5. Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders?

  6. They don't wash their hands before they eat.

  7. Jesus replied,

  8. Jesus called the crowd and said,

  9. Listen and understand.

  10. What goes into a man's mouth does not make him unclean, but what comes out of his mouth, that is what makes him unclean.

  11. Then the disciples came to him and asked,

  12. Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?

  13. He replied,

  14. If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit.

  15. Peter said,

  16. Explain the parable to us.

  17. Are you still so dull?

  18. Jesus asked them.

  19. Don't you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body?

  20. But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man unclean.

  21. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.

  22. These are what make a man unclean.

  23. But eating with unwashed hands does not make him unclean.

  24. Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon.

  25. A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him crying out,

  26. Lord, son of David, have mercy on me.

  27. My daughter is suffering terribly from demon possession.

  28. Jesus did not answer a word.

  29. So his disciples came to him and urged him,

  30. Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.

  31. He answered,

  32. I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.

  33. The woman came and knelt before him.

  34. Lord, help me, she said.

  35. He replied,

  36. It is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to their dogs.

  37. Yes, Lord, she said,

  38. But even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master's table.

  39. Then Jesus answered,

  40. Woman, you have great faith.

  41. Your request is granted.

  42. And her daughter was healed from that very hour.

  43. Jesus left there and went along the Sea of Galilee.

  44. Then he went up on a mountainside and sat down.

  45. Then great crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others,

  46. and laid them at his feet, and he healed them.

  47. The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking,

  48. the crippled made well, the lame walking, and the blind seeing.

  49. And they praised the God of Israel.

  50. Jesus called his disciples to him and said,

  51. I have compassion for these people.

  52. They've already been with me three days and have nothing to eat.

  53. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way.

  54. His disciples answered,

  55. Where can we get enough bread in this remote place to feed such a crowd?

  56. How many loaves do you have?

  57. Jesus asked.

  58. Seven, they replied, and a few small fish.

  59. He told the crowd to sit down on the ground.

  60. Then he took the seven loaves and the fish,

  61. and when he'd given thanks, he broke them and gave them to the disciples,

  62. and they in turn to the people.

  63. They all ate and were satisfied.

  64. Afterwards, the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.

  65. The number of those who ate was 4,000 besides women and children.

  66. After Jesus had sent the crowd away,

  67. he got into the boat and went to the vicinity of Magadan.

  68. Amen.

  69. But thinking about this,

  70. so we're continuing to look at grace in the Gospel of Matthew.

  71. And here is our theme for this morning,

  72. that you and I are invited to the feast to enjoy God's grace.

  73. In 19th century High Society New York,

  74. there was a group that was simply known as the 400.

  75. They were led by a lady called Mary Astor,

  76. and they were very carefully ranked.

  77. They were called the 400 because that's how many people she could fit into her ballroom.

  78. That's how many people she would invite to her great banquets.

  79. And she was very careful about who was in and who was out.

  80. To be 401 in 19th century New York was to be a nobody,

  81. to find yourself with no place at the party.

  82. Different day, different era.

  83. But do we recognize that mindset in our own day?

  84. Jesus' day had barriers of division based on religion,

  85. based on gender, based on geography.

  86. We also, we have different labels,

  87. but there are still divisions within society

  88. based on economics or based on the work that we do,

  89. based on our appearance perhaps.

  90. There are still this tendency,

  91. there's still this tendency to divide into insider and outsider.

  92. It has been said, I think rightly said,

  93. that we are by and large a graceless society.

  94. We are so busy competing with one another,

  95. we are so busy comparing ourselves,

  96. sometimes jealous, sometimes proud,

  97. that there is little or no room for mercy,

  98. for apology, for forgiveness,

  99. or to extend a welcome to somebody outside of our group.

  100. I think we've seen that even this week in our national politics.

  101. Maybe you come here today and that's your life.

  102. You are exhausted because you're very aware

  103. that there is a grade that you want to make.

  104. You're looking for approval and you're finding that to be tiring.

  105. Perhaps you may be in that state of despair.

  106. I know I'm never going to be in that group.

  107. I'm never going to be that person.

  108. I'm never going to make it.

  109. Or maybe we're just looking around thinking,

  110. does life really have to be this way?

  111. Or is there a better way?

  112. Is there a way of grace?

  113. Do you know when we think about

  114. the way people tend to divide and label and judge?

  115. It's really important for us to ask the question,

  116. is this what God is like?

  117. Does God label?

  118. Does God have a 400 club

  119. that we need to earn our way into?

  120. Do we need to measure up

  121. to make the grade?

  122. That's why Matthew chapter 15 is good news for us.

    Matthew 15 chapter mention

  123. Because in Matthew chapter 15,

    Matthew 15 chapter mention

  124. we find Jesus once again offering the greatest of all invitations.

  125. We're going to see Jesus offering the invitation to life with God,

  126. to enjoy in God.

  127. And that comes not on the basis of performance or background.

  128. It comes on the basis of God's grace,

  129. God's free and undeserved kindness to sinners.

  130. And that's something that's received, again,

  131. not by working really hard to receive.

  132. We get it through faith in Jesus.

  133. So we're going to hear an invitation to God's feast.

  134. In some of our readings, some of our singings,

  135. we've heard of this theme that the kingdom of God

  136. is pictured throughout the Bible as a feast.

  137. It's a repeating theme.

  138. We could see it, in fact, from the very beginning.

  139. When Adam and Eve, the first people were made,

  140. they were placed in the Garden of Eden,

  141. which was this wonderful garden where there was plenty,

  142. there was generous provision.

  143. Or we could go to the story of the Exodus.

  144. We can remember that God set the people free

  145. from being slaves in Egypt.

  146. They found themselves in the wilderness

  147. and they had nothing to eat.

  148. And what did God do?

  149. God literally rained down food on them

  150. so that they would be satisfied.

  151. And they were heading towards the promised land,

  152. which was described as a land flowing with milk and honey.

  153. God's place was a generous place.

  154. God wants to meet with His people to provide for them.

  155. Even when things began to go wrong

  156. in Old Testament Israelite history,

  157. when they turned to other gods,

  158. when they walked away from God's law,

  159. there was still hope of restoration.

  160. So you come to a prophet like Isaiah.

  161. In Isaiah chapter 25,

    Isaiah 25 chapter mention

  162. he gives this wonderful picture

  163. of life at the end of the age

  164. where there's no more death and pain and crying.

  165. And God has laid out this great feast

  166. so that He can provide for His people,

  167. for those who have faith.

  168. And then Jesus comes.

  169. And if you know anything of the teaching of Jesus

  170. and the parables of Jesus,

  171. He spent a lot of time teaching at meals,

  172. using meals and feasts

  173. as a picture of the kingdom of heaven.

  174. And two of His most famous miracles,

  175. the feeding of the 5,000,

  176. in this one that we read,

  177. the feeding of the 4,000,

  178. again, here is Jesus saying,

  179. I am God.

  180. And just like God did in the Old Testament,

  181. I am here to provide a feast

  182. so people can enjoy grace

  183. and to enjoy it freely.

  184. So that is a big theme

  185. that you can trace all the way through the Bible.

  186. And we can also see it

  187. working its way through chapter 15.

  188. So we met in the first 20 verses,

  189. the Pharisees,

  190. the religious leaders.

  191. These were the guys

  192. who considered themselves to be the insiders.

  193. You know, we judge everyone else

  194. who's not like us.

  195. We are sure we are in God's team.

  196. But what happens is

  197. because they don't have faith in Jesus,

  198. because they reject His authority,

  199. because they are hostile to Him,

  200. they won't sit and eat with Him

  201. and with His friends.

  202. That's a picture of being outside of,

  203. receiving God's grace through Jesus.

  204. But then by contrast,

  205. we come to verses 21 to 28.

  206. And we see Jesus in conversation

  207. with a Canaanite woman.

  208. And we see that proverb in verse 27,

  209. from verse 26 rather,

  210. it's not right to take the children's bread

  211. and toss it to their dogs.

  212. Jesus is using a proverb

  213. based around the family table.

  214. And what we discover is that this Canaanite,

  215. this enemy by nature of God's people,

  216. she has faith.

  217. And so she gets to enjoy grace.

  218. And then it moves,

  219. Jesus moves from there towards the Sea of Galilee

  220. and He feeds 4,000 people in great need

  221. who are also outside of Israel,

  222. outside of sort of the line of the covenant promises,

  223. but they enjoy a feast in the wilderness.

  224. So this is a really significant chapter for Matthew.

  225. He's saying to us,

  226. Jesus is God.

  227. He is doing exactly what God did in the Old Testament.

  228. He's come by grace to invite people to enjoy life with Him,

  229. which is pictured as a feast.

  230. And Matthew is telling us,

  231. here is the way to enter into that,

  232. and it's by faith.

  233. Not by claiming our own goodness or self-righteousness like the Pharisees,

  234. but coming aware of our need,

  235. coming with faith.

  236. And for those who do,

  237. there is a feast of God's goodness to enjoy.

  238. So the feast,

  239. that's our theme for today.

  240. So two questions for us.

  241. First one is this,

  242. who is invited to the feast?

  243. And we can make that personal,

  244. am I invited to the feast?

  245. Look with me at verse 21.

  246. Simple words,

  247. but with great significance.

  248. Verse 21 begins,

  249. leaving that place.

  250. So where has Jesus been?

  251. He's been in Israel.

  252. He's been with those religious insiders who reject Him,

  253. who are hostile to Him.

  254. So He's leaving that place.

  255. Where does He go?

  256. We're told Jesus withdrew

  257. to the region of Tyre and Sidon.

  258. Now that might not mean too much to us,

  259. but to Matthew's first century readers,

  260. there are alarm bells going off all over the place.

  261. Because if you hear Tyre and Sidon,

  262. you hear enemies of God.

  263. Tyre and Sidon was one of those groups in the Old Testament

  264. that made a habit of attacking Israel as the people of God.

  265. They robbed the temple.

  266. They took some of Israel away to be slaves.

  267. These are not the good guys.

  268. And yet here is Jesus,

  269. and He's on a long walk,

  270. 50 to 60 miles.

  271. He's walking here,

  272. not to judge enemies,

  273. but to show grace to enemies.

  274. And so we're presented with this almost shocking contrast.

  275. You've got the insiders,

  276. the Pharisees,

  277. and they reject Jesus.

  278. They want nothing to do with God's Savior.

  279. But by contrast,

  280. this former enemy,

  281. this Canaanite woman,

  282. she receives the invitation,

  283. and so she enjoys grace.

  284. Jesus is on this mission of extravagant grace.

  285. And the guest list,

  286. just as was the case last week,

  287. the guest list highlights that for us.

  288. So we're told in verse 22 quite explicitly

  289. that Jesus is dealing with a Canaanite woman.

  290. And again,

  291. the label that would have been attached to her

  292. from a religious society would be,

  293. this is a sinner.

  294. This is somebody to avoid,

  295. but not Jesus.

  296. And once he's finished ministering,

  297. helping her,

  298. Jesus then moves on.

  299. And look at verse 30 and 31.

  300. We read,

  301. Great crowds came to him,

  302. bringing the lame,

  303. the blind,

  304. the crippled,

  305. the mute,

  306. and many others,

  307. and laid them at his feet.

  308. And he healed them.

  309. The people were amazed

  310. when they saw the mute speaking.

  311. The crippled made well,

  312. the lame walking,

  313. and the blind seeing.

  314. And they praised the God of Israel.

  315. So here are some foreigners

  316. in desperate situations.

  317. We know they're foreigners

  318. because in the end,

  319. they turn and praise the God of Israel.

  320. Implication,

  321. that's not naturally who they belong to.

  322. But here are some of the lowest in society.

  323. Those who have,

  324. as it were,

  325. nothing to bring to the table

  326. except their own need.

  327. And what we discover

  328. is that Jesus feeds them.

  329. Jesus shows grace.

  330. To these two,

  331. this woman and this group,

  332. they know their place.

  333. They know that they have no claim

  334. on Jesus' love and mercy and kindness.

  335. The Pharisees thought,

  336. absolutely,

  337. they earn it.

  338. And so they get nothing.

  339. But for those who see themselves

  340. as needy,

  341. with no claim,

  342. Jesus instantly heals

  343. the woman's daughter.

  344. Jesus heals this vast crowd.

  345. And then he provides a feast

  346. in the wilderness,

  347. just as God had done

  348. in the Old Testament.

  349. It's so that we're beginning to see

  350. that life in God's kingdom

  351. is about enjoying God's grace

  352. as it comes to us in Jesus.

  353. And we are invited to receive that

  354. as a gift

  355. with thankfulness,

  356. with humility.

  357. One of the truly unique things

  358. about Jesus

  359. and about Christianity

  360. compared with every other religion

  361. is this.

  362. Your religion says,

  363. climb the ladder up to God.

  364. Work really hard.

  365. Make merit.

  366. Go on great walks

  367. and make great sacrifices

  368. in the hope that

  369. you can do enough

  370. that the gods

  371. might be pleased with you.

  372. The Bible reveals to us

  373. that our God is perfect

  374. and that He is holy

  375. and that He is without sin

  376. and that He hates sin.

  377. And so Christianity

  378. is very honest

  379. in saying,

  380. in the first place,

  381. well, as sinful people,

  382. we cannot ever be good enough

  383. for a holy God

  384. if our hope rests

  385. on making our way up

  386. to God's standard.

  387. We have no hope.

  388. But then there is

  389. this wonderful news

  390. that Jesus has come down.

  391. Not that we go up,

  392. that Jesus has come down

  393. to be Emmanuel,

  394. to be God with us.

  395. And that He's come to do that

  396. to bring us to God

  397. as an act of undeserved grace.

  398. Our King has come near

  399. to save us

  400. and to provide for us.

  401. I watched a documentary

  402. from Bhutan.

  403. The former King of Bhutan

  404. in 2016,

  405. he was celebrating

  406. his 60th birthday.

  407. So his son,

  408. who was the new king,

  409. put on this lavish celebration.

  410. It was a day

  411. of national holiday.

  412. And then there was,

  413. I think,

  414. 30,000 tickets issued

  415. so that you could go

  416. to the national stadium

  417. and you could watch

  418. singing and dancing.

  419. And then at one point,

  420. the king came

  421. and he sort of did

  422. a walk around the pitch.

  423. And the person

  424. who was doing

  425. the documentary,

  426. he interviewed

  427. one excited student

  428. who'd spent two days

  429. on a bus

  430. to have the chance

  431. to see the king.

  432. And he was like,

  433. this is the happiest day

  434. of my life

  435. to be able to see

  436. the king.

  437. He was very glad.

  438. What Christianity offers

  439. is much, much better

  440. than that.

  441. The amazing news

  442. of the Bible

  443. is that Jesus

  444. is God's king

  445. who invites us in

  446. and not just to see him

  447. at a distance

  448. in a stadium,

  449. Jesus invites us

  450. to feast with him,

  451. to enjoy grace from him,

  452. to enjoy God's love

  453. through knowing him,

  454. to find peace and joy

  455. and eternal security

  456. in him.

  457. He is inviting us

  458. to a feast.

  459. It's what makes Jesus

  460. so different.

  461. Jesus, the one who came

  462. to break down barriers

  463. in order to show grace

  464. to people that don't earn it

  465. and deserve it.

  466. Here is Jesus

  467. on a long walk

  468. to Tyre and Sidon,

  469. but we can think

  470. of another long walk,

  471. another long journey

  472. of Jesus.

  473. Think about Jesus

  474. leaving the glory of heaven

  475. to come,

  476. to take on human nature,

  477. to live among us

  478. and think about the walks

  479. that Jesus does

  480. on his mission

  481. to show compassion

  482. and mercy

  483. and love

  484. to those who are rejected,

  485. despised,

  486. and hated by others

  487. and then see Jesus'

  488. long walk

  489. to the cross.

  490. Think of Jesus

  491. there

  492. being regarded

  493. as the ultimate outsider,

  494. rejected by the people,

  495. feeling forsaken

  496. by his father

  497. so that you and I,

  498. we might become insiders,

  499. we might receive

  500. that grace

  501. that's promised.

  502. Jesus has come

  503. to die on the cross

  504. to deal with

  505. the greatest

  506. of all walls

  507. of division,

  508. the barrier of sin

  509. that separates us

  510. from a holy God.

  511. Jesus takes

  512. the sin

  513. of his people

  514. on himself,

  515. dying,

  516. facing the penalty

  517. that sin deserves

  518. so that by faith

  519. in Jesus

  520. we might know

  521. and enjoy

  522. life with God.

  523. This is our

  524. good news message

  525. and this is our

  526. church mission,

  527. this is the walk

  528. we are to take

  529. to tell people

  530. of a God of grace

  531. and love.

  532. This explains

  533. the work

  534. of our global

  535. mission partners.

  536. We can think

  537. of Manuel

  538. and Patty

  539. Rianno

  540. in Colombia

  541. as they work

  542. with teens

  543. who live

  544. on the streets

  545. in Colombia.

  546. Or we can think

  547. of Patrick Jock

  548. in South Sudan

  549. who's caring

  550. for refugees.

  551. We can think

  552. of Hendro

  553. from Indonesia

  554. who's training

  555. evangelists

  556. to go and share

  557. the gospel

  558. with unreached

  559. Muslim people groups.

  560. Why?

  561. Because our God

  562. is a God

  563. of grace

  564. and a God

  565. who wants

  566. to break down

  567. barriers of division

  568. so that all people

  569. can hear of

  570. his great love

  571. for them

  572. seen in Jesus.

  573. And this is

  574. to motivate

  575. our mission

  576. to in our

  577. day to day

  578. that we would

  579. pray,

  580. please make me

  581. an agent

  582. of grace.

  583. To ask God

  584. for help

  585. for us

  586. to make

  587. our long

  588. walk of grace.

  589. Perhaps to walk

  590. across a room

  591. to talk to

  592. a student

  593. who looks lonely

  594. or looks

  595. stressed.

  596. Perhaps it's

  597. crossing the street

  598. to spend time

  599. with a neighbour

  600. that you know

  601. is going through

  602. hard times.

  603. Perhaps

  604. like Jesus

  605. we can share

  606. a meal

  607. as a way

  608. to extend

  609. something of the

  610. grace of God

  611. to others.

  612. To buy a coffee

  613. to invite someone

  614. into a deeper

  615. friendship.

  616. To welcome

  617. someone into

  618. our family

  619. meals.

  620. For those of us

  621. who have received

  622. grace

  623. it is then

  624. to motivate us

  625. in our mission

  626. to share

  627. Jesus

  628. with the hope

  629. that anyone

  630. who will trust

  631. in Jesus

  632. is invited

  633. to this

  634. feast.

  635. Second question

  636. to think about

  637. and this is where

  638. we're going to

  639. concentrate on the

  640. faith of the

  641. Canaanite women

  642. here.

  643. How does

  644. someone

  645. enter this

  646. feast that

  647. Jesus

  648. provides?

  649. How do I

  650. enter the

  651. feast of

  652. God's

  653. grace?

  654. You know

  655. so we're

  656. saying that

  657. King Jesus

  658. has come

  659. to do

  660. all that

  661. God had

  662. done in the

  663. Old Testament

  664. to give us

  665. this wonderful

  666. access into

  667. his kindness

  668. into his love

  669. into his joy.

  670. That's only

  671. good news

  672. if we see

  673. that that's

  674. something that

  675. we need.

  676. That's only

  677. good news

  678. if we will

  679. come to him

  680. in faith.

  681. And so we're

  682. going to think

  683. about the

  684. faith of

  685. this Canaanite

  686. woman for a

  687. few moments.

  688. Let's think

  689. about her

  690. situation.

  691. Verse 22,

  692. a Canaanite

  693. woman from

  694. that vicinity

  695. came to him

  696. crying out,

  697. Lord, son

  698. of David,

  699. have mercy

  700. on me.

  701. My daughter

  702. is suffering

  703. terribly from

  704. demon possession.

  705. Here is a

  706. desperate parent.

  707. I met a

  708. friend this

  709. week whose

  710. child years

  711. ago now had

  712. been seriously

  713. ill and he

  714. was speaking

  715. about living

  716. with that

  717. trauma still.

  718. And so it's

  719. important for us

  720. to think how

  721. is this woman

  722. feeling as she

  723. sees day after

  724. day her

  725. daughter who

  726. she loves

  727. controlled by

  728. the forces of

  729. evil.

  730. What's she going

  731. to do in that

  732. helpless situation?

  733. She comes to

  734. Jesus.

  735. And as she

  736. comes to Jesus

  737. we're presented

  738. with one of the

  739. most, on one

  740. hand, fascinating

  741. on the other

  742. hand, difficult

  743. conversations that

  744. Jesus has with

  745. another person.

  746. It can seem like

  747. Jesus is being

  748. harsh with his

  749. silence.

  750. He can seem

  751. like he is

  752. perhaps unwilling

  753. to help if we

  754. read it at a

  755. surface level.

  756. And so it's

  757. important for us

  758. to do our

  759. background work

  760. to think what

  761. do we know,

  762. what have we

  763. discovered about

  764. Jesus?

  765. So remember

  766. we've already

  767. been told he's

  768. coming to Tyre

  769. and Sidon, he's

  770. leaving behind

  771. those who are

  772. hostile, he wants

  773. to show grace

  774. and kindness to

  775. outsiders.

  776. So we know

  777. that, that's why

  778. he's on the

  779. move and we

  780. see that because

  781. he feeds a

  782. great crowd of

  783. people who

  784. aren't Jew.

  785. And that ties

  786. in with all

  787. that we know

  788. of Jesus'

  789. mission.

  790. Jesus said it's

  791. not the healthy

  792. that need a

  793. doctor but it's

  794. the sick.

  795. He's not come

  796. to call the

  797. self-righteous but

  798. those who know

  799. that they are

  800. sinners to repent

  801. and to come to

  802. him.

  803. We also saw a

  804. couple of weeks

  805. ago in Matthew

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  806. chapter 1 we

  807. were clued into

  808. this fact in

  809. Jesus' family

  810. tree, family

  811. history where

  812. you discover here

  813. are women who

  814. are outsiders who

  815. have surprising

  816. sometimes shocking

  817. stories and they

  818. are brought into

  819. the family line

  820. of Jesus.

  821. A few chapters

  822. back we also

  823. meet another

  824. person who's said

  825. to have great

  826. faith.

  827. Two times Jesus

  828. said in Matthew's

  829. gospel somebody

  830. had great faith.

  831. One was this

  832. woman from Canaan,

  833. the other was a

  834. Roman soldier,

  835. an enemy

  836. centurion who

  837. is also said to

  838. have great faith

  839. and he too

  840. receives help.

  841. So we understand

  842. at least in part

  843. something of the

  844. heart of Jesus

  845. and the mission

  846. of Jesus and the

  847. disciples know that

  848. as well.

  849. They have never

  850. seen Jesus turn

  851. anyone away who

  852. comes to him

  853. for help.

  854. So let's think

  855. about how this

  856. goes and especially

  857. let's think how

  858. do we see her

  859. faith?

  860. First of all I

  861. think we can see

  862. it in the posture

  863. that she adopts.

  864. Verse 22, what

  865. does she look for

  866. from Jesus?

  867. She cries out

  868. for mercy.

  869. She wants Jesus

  870. to look on her

  871. in her helpless

  872. misery and to

  873. act.

  874. She's not claiming

  875. any right or

  876. merit.

  877. And then in

  878. verse 25 is she

  879. draws near to

  880. Jesus.

  881. What's her

  882. posture there?

  883. The woman came

  884. and knelt

  885. before him.

  886. She is humble.

  887. She is begging

  888. for help.

  889. Faith is humble.

  890. Faith sees

  891. our needs

  892. and recognizes

  893. that by rights

  894. we have no claim

  895. on God

  896. and his love.

  897. But faith

  898. comes.

  899. We also see

  900. that faith

  901. in this woman's

  902. case is extremely

  903. persistent.

  904. So we hear her

  905. crying out for

  906. help in verse 22

  907. but then in verse

  908. 23 perhaps

  909. surprisingly Jesus

  910. did not answer a

  911. word.

  912. She keeps on

  913. going.

  914. And again Jesus

  915. says to his

  916. disciples,

  917. I was sent only

  918. to the lost

  919. sheep of Israel.

  920. So he's been

  921. silent and he said

  922. I'm only sent to

  923. the lost sheep of

  924. Israel.

  925. Then as she

  926. continues to beg

  927. Jesus then says

  928. it's not right to

  929. take the children's

  930. bread and toss it

  931. to their dogs.

  932. Which again sounds

  933. on a surface level

  934. like Jesus is being

  935. harsh or being

  936. unwilling.

  937. What's going on

  938. here?

  939. Well two things I

  940. think.

  941. First of all

  942. Jesus is making

  943. a point that his

  944. first priority is

  945. to the people

  946. of God to

  947. Israel because

  948. he has come to

  949. fulfill all the

  950. promises of the

  951. Old Testament.

  952. He has come to

  953. be the true king

  954. in the line of

  955. David, the one

  956. who will reign for

  957. God forever.

  958. And he's also

  959. come to be the

  960. seed of Abraham

  961. that will bring

  962. blessing not just

  963. to Israel but to

  964. the nations and

  965. that's significant.

  966. So Jesus is

  967. talking about his

  968. priority and we

  969. see Jesus is very

  970. focused in his

  971. mission.

  972. He makes

  973. occasional forays

  974. into sort of

  975. outsider or enemy

  976. territory but most

  977. of his time he is

  978. on this mission to

  979. fulfill the promises

  980. that God had made

  981. in the Old Testament

  982. that he had come to

  983. be their saviour.

  984. But there's one other

  985. thing I think that

  986. Jesus is doing and we

  987. see him do it in other

  988. places.

  989. He's wanting to see

  990. this woman's faith,

  991. to exercise faith.

  992. Will she keep on

  993. asking?

  994. Will she trust that

  995. Jesus has grace

  996. sufficient to meet

  997. her needs?

  998. And her faith is

  999. amazing.

  1000. So even after that

  1001. family table proverb

  1002. verse 26 where

  1003. Jesus is saying you

  1004. know if you had

  1005. children and you

1006. have a dog in the

  1007. family home it is

  1008. natural that you feed

  1009. the children first and

1010. that's what we do if

  1011. we have dogs.

  1012. But here her

  1013. persistent faith in

  1014. verse 27.

  1015. Yes Lord she said

  1016. but even the dogs

  1017. eat the crumbs that

  1018. fall from the

  1019. master's table.

  1020. She says yes I

  1021. agree absolutely

  1022. that Israel has

  1023. priority but remember

  1024. you've given that

  1025. that family proverb

  1026. and there's a dog in

  1027. there.

  1028. I'm happy to be

  1029. considered a dog if

  1030. you would just give

1031. me even a scrap so

1032. that I can get help

  1033. for my daughter.

  1034. I know this isn't my

  1035. time perhaps until

  1036. after Jesus' death and

  1037. resurrection that when

  1038. when the gospel goes

  1039. global but she says

  1040. please feed me anyway.

  1041. Please give me grace

  1042. and mercy anyway.

1043. And what we see is

1044. that her faith is in

  1045. line with the message

  1046. of Matthew and the

  1047. mission of Jesus.

  1048. Very beginning we have

  1049. that genealogy that

  1050. reminds us that God's

  1051. people has always just

  1052. been wider than

  1053. simply national Israel.

1054. We get to the end of

1055. Matthew 28 and we come

  1056. to the Great Commission

1057. and we see go and make

  1058. disciples of all nations.

1059. And so her faith stands

1060. in that line that says

  1061. God's kingdom is bigger

  1062. and wider than we

  1063. imagine and that's good

  1064. news.

  1065. Does the woman get

  1066. scraps?

  1067. Verse 28.

  1068. Woman you have great

  1069. faith.

  1070. Your request is granted.

  1071. And her daughter was

  1072. healed from that very

  1073. hour.

  1074. She don't get scraps.

  1075. She gets a feast of God's

  1076. kindness.

  1077. She has faith.

1078. She's part of the family

  1079. of God.

  1080. And so Jesus lovingly

  1081. provides for her.

  1082. The crucial thing about

1083. her faith is that it

1084. rests in the person of

  1085. Jesus.

1086. Look at how she talks

1087. about Jesus in verse 22.

  1088. She calls him Lord.

  1089. There's honor.

  1090. There's respect.

1091. But then she calls him

  1092. son of David.

1093. And son of David is

  1094. savior language.

  1095. That she understands that

1096. this man standing in front

1097. of her is God's promised

  1098. king.

  1099. God's promised savior.

1100. And so she knows by faith

1101. to come to him with her

  1102. needs.

  1103. And that's the wonderful

  1104. lesson that we receive

  1105. from her story.

  1106. You and I,

1107. we need to come hungry

  1108. to Jesus.

  1109. To see our need

  1110. of his grace

  1111. in our lives.

  1112. And when we do,

  1113. we will discover

  1114. that he can

  1115. and he does

  1116. truly satisfy

  1117. our deepest needs.

  1118. Whatever that might be.

1119. So you might be here

  1120. and you feel

  1121. burdened by

  1122. sin

  1123. and guilt

  1124. and you

  1125. want to be

  1126. right with God.

  1127. You know that all

  1128. is not well

  1129. between you

  1130. and God

  1131. and you know

  1132. that you can't

  1133. fix it.

1134. So you need to come

  1135. to Jesus

  1136. in faith

  1137. and recognize

  1138. that his work

  1139. on the cross

  1140. is for you.

  1141. That he has died

  1142. so that you might

  1143. be forgiven.

  1144. That you might

  1145. be reconciled

  1146. to God.

  1147. That you might

  1148. be adopted

  1149. into the family

  1150. of God.

  1151. But perhaps

  1152. we're here today

  1153. and our need

  1154. is different.

  1155. Perhaps burdened

  1156. by responsibilities.

  1157. Perhaps caring

  1158. for family

  1159. and friends.

  1160. Perhaps working

  1161. through some

  1162. difficult situations

  1163. and we feel

  1164. empty

  1165. or we feel

  1166. tired

  1167. and again

  1168. in faith

  1169. we need to

  1170. invite Jesus

  1171. in there too.

  1172. To invite him

  1173. to be

  1174. our strength

  1175. when we feel

  1176. weak.

  1177. To be our

  1178. wisdom

  1179. when we feel

  1180. like we don't

  1181. necessarily

  1182. have the

  1183. answers.

  1184. To be that

  1185. friend that

  1186. we need

  1187. as we seek

  1188. to be a

  1189. friend to

  1190. others.

  1191. Because grace

  1192. doesn't just

  1193. sustain,

  1194. doesn't just

  1195. save us,

  1196. it also

  1197. sustains us.

  1198. And so every

  1199. day as Christians

  1200. we also need

  1201. to put our

  1202. faith in God

  1203. to receive

  1204. grace from

  1205. him day

  1206. by day.

  1207. Truth is

  1208. whoever we

  1209. are today,

  1210. whatever our

  1211. story coming

  1212. into this place

  1213. today,

  1214. grace is on

  1215. offer to

  1216. each one

  1217. of us

  1218. and grace

  1219. is what

  1220. we need.

  1221. And so all

  1222. of us,

  1223. whoever we

  1224. are,

  1225. we are called

  1226. like this

  1227. woman to

  1228. come to

  1229. Jesus,

  1230. to trust

  1231. in him.

  1232. If we are

  1233. here today

  1234. and we're

  1235. tired of

  1236. the graceless

  1237. culture that

  1238. we see,

  1239. tired of

  1240. division and

  1241. separation and

  1242. competition and

  1243. rivalry and

  1244. you want a

  1245. new way,

  1246. you find it

  1247. in Jesus.

  1248. If you're

  1249. aware of

  1250. guilt and

  1251. wanting rescue,

  1252. you find that

  1253. in Jesus.

  1254. If we're

  1255. spending ourselves

  1256. on others and

  1257. we feel empty,

  1258. we find grace

  1259. through Jesus.

  1260. So the message

  1261. to all of us

  1262. is the same.

  1263. Come to

  1264. Jesus in faith

  1265. and feast on

  1266. the grace that

  1267. he longs to

  1268. provide for us.
