  1. Good morning, everyone. My name is Eric. For those of you who don't know me, I'm one of the guys on staff here at Watermark Church.

  2. The year was 1997. There's a new magazine out called Backwoods Homes Magazine.

  3. It was a new magazine, which means that the classified section didn't always get filled up.

  4. And in the times when they were short on classified ads, the editor would get one of his friends to come and fill up the extra space with riddles and jokes.

  5. One week when they were short on classified ads, the friend who typically told the riddles and jokes asked if instead he could submit a couple of personal classified ads for free.

  6. And the editor said, sure, why not?

  7. So the first ad was an ad for a girlfriend.

  8. He was looking for someone to be the love of his life and decided this magazine might be the place to look.

  9. The second one, which you can see on the screen behind me, said wanted.

  10. Somebody to go back in time with me.

  11. This is not a joke.

  12. P.O. Box 322, Oakview, California, 93022.

  13. You'll get paid after we get back.

  14. Must bring your own weapons.

  15. Safety not guaranteed.

  16. I have only done this once before.

  17. Now, he didn't really expect many responses from this.

  18. However, in the 20 years that have gone by since posting this ad, he continues to get responses to this letter.

  19. He has gotten responses from every continent, including Antarctica.

  20. And some people just want to go back in time for the thrill of it.

  21. He said a surprisingly high number of people actually believe that the ad was real.

  22. Some people want to go back in time just for the excitement.

  23. Who wouldn't want to go back and see parts of the past?

  24. But most of the letters that he has received in response to this ad have been people who want to go back and undo a tragedy in their lives.

  25. He said that he has received several dozens of letters from people in prison who want to go back in time and stop themselves from committing the crime that put them there in the first place.

  26. One lady even wrote to him and asked if she could go back in time and stop the hitman that she hired to kill her husband.

  27. Out of all of the responses that this man has received from this ad, very, very few are from people who want to go back and relive a positive, happy moment from their lives.

  28. Most of them are from people who want to go change a tragedy and stop it from happening because those times are the times that have stuck with them and haunted them throughout their lives.

  29. And I'm guessing that each of us here today has one or two moments in our lives that if we had the chance and we had a time machine that we could go back and undo those moments, we would.

  30. You know, I'm hoping that no one in here has hired a hitman to kill their spouse.

  31. But all of us have things that follow us and haunt us.

  32. For me, I have a handful of moments that I think I wish I could go back and undo them.

  33. One of them happened a couple summers ago.

  34. I was back visiting home and as kids, one of my younger brothers used to intentionally try to annoy me a lot.

  35. And he's grown up since then, but it's been years since we've lived under the same roof.

  36. So in my mind, he was still that same annoying little kid.

  37. And while I was home visiting, he did a couple things that just bothered me, you know?

  38. And I decided, I'm tired of him intentionally bothering me.

  39. I'm an adult now.

  40. I don't need to put up with this.

  41. I'm going to say something to him that will make him stop.

  42. And so as we were loading into the van to go celebrate my cousin's wedding, I lashed out at him.

  43. And I sent a very clear message that I am tired of you trying to annoy me.

  44. We got to the wedding and I celebrated because it's a day for celebration and didn't really pay much attention to my brother until we got home that evening.

  45. And we're hanging out as a family and my mom came up to me and she said,

  46. Hey, Eric, you need to go talk to your brother.

  47. I said, What? What's going on?

  48. And she said, He's up in his room and he won't come down because of what you said to him this morning.

  49. And so I went up to talk to him and I still, from time to time, see that image in my head of my brother lying on his bed in tears because of the impact that my words had on him.

  50. And it's painful to know that my words cause such pain to someone that I love.

  51. And if I could go back in time, that's one of the moments that I wish I could go undo, take back those words that I've said.

  52. But as we all know, I can't.

  53. And I'm sure that each of us has moments in our lives, big and small, where we've failed, where we've messed up, where we have sinned.

  54. Sin is rebellion against God.

  55. And times that, if possible, we would want to go back and change.

  56. And today we're continuing our series on the Psalms and talking about worship in all seasons of life.

  57. And we're talking today about Psalm 51, a psalm for the seasons when we are guilty.

  58. And what we're going to see is that in our moments of sin, in our moments of rebellion against God, we need forgiveness that can only be found in Jesus.

  59. So we're going to have three points.

  60. First, sin, the heart of the matter.

  61. Second, the only solution.

  62. And third, the life-changing conclusion.

  63. And then we're going to conclude the sermon by taking communion together.

  64. Normally we take it earlier in the service, but today we're going to take it at the end.

  65. So the sermon itself will be the communion intro.

  66. But first, we're going to talk about sin, the heart of the matter.

  67. Now the Psalms, the book of Psalms, is a collection of songs that were sung by Israel in the Old Testament to worship God.

  68. Here we have songs.

  69. We just finished singing some songs.

  70. And we keep our songs stored on the computer back there so that we can put them on the screen here.

  71. In the Old Testament, they collected their songs in a book, which is now known as the book of Psalms.

  72. And as with many songs, something often happens that inspires someone to write a song.

  73. And in the book of Psalms, some of the songs have little notes at the start that tell us why that song was written.

  74. And this is one of them.

  75. It says,

  76. A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet went to him after he had gone in to Bathsheba.

  77. Now if you've grown up in church, this next couple minutes is going to be a review.

  78. But it's important.

  79. And if you haven't grown up in church, this is very important to understanding this psalm.

  80. The background of why this psalm was written is very important for us to understand what's being talked about in this psalm.

  81. Now David was a king of Israel back in the Old Testament, in the earlier part of the Bible.

  82. And he was an amazing man.

  83. God himself said of David that he was a man after God's own heart.

  84. Now the number of people that God speaks that highly of is very small.

  85. But God himself said,

  86. This man, David, is a man after my own heart.

  87. If I search out the world for people who love me, who follow me with all of their hearts,

  88. this is one of the few.

  89. David became the king of Israel and he led the nation well.

  90. He led the army to conquer foreign lands.

  91. He led the people in worshiping God.

  92. He had established his kingdom.

  93. Things were going well.

  94. And then, one night,

  95. his armies were out at war,

  96. fighting battles.

  97. But for some reason, which we don't know,

  98. he was at home.

  99. He was taking a walk on his rooftop.

  100. And as he looked down over the edge,

  101. he saw a woman taking a bath on a neighboring rooftop.

  102. And he called all his servants and said,

  103. Who's that one?

  104. And they said,

  105. She's Bathsheba.

  106. She's the wife of one of your soldiers in your army.

  107. And David said to himself,

  108. Hmm, she's married to a soldier in the army.

  109. It means her husband's away,

  110. so she's probably lonely.

  111. And she's hot.

  112. Go grab her.

  113. Have her come over here.

  114. And Bathsheba came over

  115. and spent the night with King David.

  116. Now, by all appearances,

  117. it seems that David probably was expecting this

  118. to just be a one-night stand,

  119. have a little fun,

  120. and then move on with life.

  121. However,

  122. not long after this,

  123. he received news that Bathsheba was pregnant,

  124. which created a problem

  125. because her husband had been gone

  126. fighting in the army for months

  127. and wouldn't be home for a few more months.

  128. And so there was no way

  129. that Bathsheba's husband would believe this baby was his.

  130. David was going to be in trouble.

  131. And so he came up quick on his feet

  132. with a plan to cover his tracks.

  133. He sent a messenger to the leader of the army

  134. and said,

  135. Hey, I want to hear an update on how things are going.

  136. Send Bathsheba's husband back here to update me.

  137. So Bathsheba's husband, Uriah,

  138. comes in,

  139. updates David on how things are going in the army,

  140. and David says,

  141. Thanks for the update.

  142. Go spend the night at home,

  143. and I'll see you in the morning.

  144. And Bathsheba's husband says,

  145. No, king, I can't do that.

  146. It's not fair to the other soldiers

  147. that I get to go see my wife

  148. and have a nice night at home

  149. while they're out fighting the battles.

  150. I'm just going to go down to your servants' quarters

  151. and sleep there.

  152. So David's like,

  153. Okay.

  154. Plan B.

  155. The next night,

  156. David keeps Bathsheba's husband around again

  157. and gets him very drunk.

  158. And then at the end of the night,

  159. he says,

  160. All right.

  161. Go home.

  162. Spend the night with your wife.

  163. It's going to be a good night for you.

  164. However, even though drunk,

  165. Bathsheba's husband is still aware enough to say,

  166. No.

  167. I can't do this to my fellow soldiers.

  168. I'm going to sleep in the servants' quarters.

  169. And again,

  170. he goes down

  171. and spends the night in the servants' quarters.

  172. And David at this point realizes,

  173. I'm not going to be able to cover this up.

  174. Uriah is too good of a man

  175. to go spend the night with his wife

  176. when all of his other soldiers

  177. that he fights alongside of

  178. are out at battle.

  179. I need to take more drastic measures

  180. to cover up what I've done.

  181. So he writes a letter

  182. to the commander of the army

  183. and he says,

  184. Here's what I want you to do.

  185. Take Bathsheba's husband,

  186. put him in the part of the fighting

  187. where it's the most intense,

  188. and once he is there,

  189. pull all the other soldiers back

  190. so he is alone in the front

  191. in the most intense area of fighting.

  192. He writes the letter.

  193. He seals it up.

  194. He hands it to Bathsheba's husband,

  195. who has no idea what's inside it,

  196. and says,

  197. Deliver this to your commander.

  198. And Uriah,

  199. as a loyal, obedient subject,

  200. carries this note

  201. with his death sentence in it

  202. to the commander of the army,

  203. who obeys his king.

  204. The news comes to David

  205. that Uriah has been killed,

  206. and Bathsheba mourns her husband,

  207. and then as soon as possible

  208. marries King David,

  209. and nine months after that first fateful night,

  210. a baby is born,

  211. and David may have felt kind of bad about it,

  212. but probably not too bad

  213. because he got away with it, right?

  214. He has a new wife

  215. added to his collection of wives,

  216. and she's really pretty.

  217. They have a new baby.

  218. No one knows about what he's done wrong.

  219. Things are looking good

  220. until a knock comes on the door,

  221. and in walks Nathan the prophet,

  222. and he says,

  223. King David,

  224. I've heard a story

  225. about something that's going on

  226. in your kingdom.

  227. You're going to want to hear about this.

  228. And David says,

  229. Okay, tell me what's going on.

  230. Nathan says,

  231. There were two men.

  232. One of them was very wealthy.

  233. He had lots of sheep,

  234. lots of land,

  235. lots of servants.

  236. The other one was a very poor man.

  237. He had only one young lamb,

  238. but this lamb was precious to him.

  239. It would eat at the table with his family.

  240. It was like a daughter to him.

  241. And one day,

  242. a visitor came to visit this rich man,

  243. and the rich man needed to feed his guest.

  244. And rather than taking one of his lambs

  245. from the many that he had,

  246. he went and took the poor man's lamb

  247. and killed it and fed it to his guest.

  248. And David became furious.

  249. He said,

  250. He said,

  251. The man who did this deserves to die.

  252. And he has to repay the poor man four times

  253. for what he stole.

  254. This is terrible.

  255. I cannot believe that this is happening in my kingdom.

  256. And after what I imagined was a dramatic pause,

  257. Nathan responds to King David,

  258. You are the man.

  259. God has given you everything you could have ever wanted.

  260. And rather than living thankfully,

  261. you decided to go out and steal your neighbor's wife

  262. and have your neighbor murdered to cover it up.

  263. And in a moment,

  264. clarity comes to David,

  265. and he realizes,

  266. I have sinned.

  267. And this psalm that we're looking at today,

  268. Psalm chapter 51,

    Psalms 51 chapter mention

  269. is David's response

  270. after this conversation with Nathan.

  271. Now, I'm guessing

  272. that if ever there was a moment in history

  273. where someone wished they had a time machine

  274. that they could go back

  275. and undo their actions,

  276. it was David in that conversation with Nathan.

  277. And yet he didn't.

  278. And so we have this psalm,

  279. Psalm chapter 51,

    Psalms 51 chapter mention

  280. David's response

  281. when he recognizes the fact

  282. that he has sinned

  283. by stealing his neighbor's wife

  284. and having his neighbor murdered

  285. to cover it up.

  286. And when we look at Psalm 51,

  287. the thing that we'll see

  288. is that David's first response

  289. when he recognizes his sin

  290. is to run to God

  291. and plead for mercy.

  292. Verses one and two say,

  293. Have mercy on me, O God,

  294. according to your steadfast love.

  295. According to your abundant mercy,

  296. blot out my transgressions.

  297. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity

  298. and cleanse me from my sin.

  299. There's no excuses for why he did what he did.

  300. There's no blame shifting.

  301. There's simply an acknowledgement

  302. that I have sinned

  303. and I need help.

  304. So God, please help me.

  305. I think the reason David responds this way

  306. is because he recognizes

  307. that the heart of the matter in his sin

  308. is the matter of the heart.

  309. The heart of the matter

  310. is the matter of the heart.

  311. He recognizes,

  312. I'm not some good person

  313. who just messed up

  314. and had a bad day

  315. and did a bad thing.

  316. No.

  317. I have a wicked heart

  318. that led me to sin

  319. against my neighbor

  320. and against God.

  321. And this is a response that's rare,

  322. especially in our world today.

  323. If you think about the ways

  324. that people respond

  325. when they're caught

  326. doing something wrong

  327. in the world today,

  328. so often it's different than this.

  329. In the world,

  330. we cover up what we've done.

  331. Like Bill Clinton.

  332. I did not have sexual relations

  333. with that woman.

  334. David doesn't do that.

  335. He confesses,

  336. I have sinned.

  337. Or,

  338. in the world today,

  339. when people get caught

  340. doing things

  341. they shouldn't be doing,

  342. we try and brush it off

  343. as an inconsistency.

  344. I'm generally a good person.

  345. I just, you know,

  346. had a bad day.

  347. Like Usher,

  348. the musician,

  349. when he was caught

  350. cheating on his wife.

  351. His response

  352. is fantastic.

  353. I was faithful at heart,

  354. but not faithful all the way.

  355. It's like the Princess Bride.

  356. I was only mostly faithful,

  357. not all faithful.

  358. Or the actress,

  359. Kristen Stewart,

  360. when she was caught

  361. having an affair

  362. with a married director.

  363. She labeled it as a,

  364. quote,

  365. momentary indiscretion.

  366. I'm normally a good person.

  367. I just had a bad moment.

  368. Or Tiger Woods,

  369. when it was revealed

  370. that he had been cheating

  371. on his wife

  372. with several different women.

  373. He said,

  374. I felt I had worked hard

  375. my entire life

  376. and deserved to enjoy

  377. all the temptations around me.

  378. I was unfaithful,

  379. I had affairs,

  380. I cheated.

  381. Yes, I did a bad thing,

  382. but it was because

  383. I'm such a good person

  384. and a hard worker

  385. that I felt that I deserved

  386. to get away with a few bad things.

  387. This is how we typically respond

  388. in our world

  389. when we are caught in our sin.

  390. We deny it,

  391. we make excuses,

  392. we say that it's not in line

  393. with our true character,

  394. and David,

  395. in Psalm 51,

  396. does none of these things.

  397. If you look at verse 5,

  398. he says,

  399. Behold,

  400. I was brought forth in iniquity,

  401. and in sin

  402. did my mother conceive me.

  403. He says,

  404. I'm not a good person

  405. who just made a bad decision.

  406. He says,

  407. I have been a sinner

  408. since the day

  409. that I was conceived.

  410. And this action

  411. that I just did

  412. is in line

  413. with my character

  414. because I am rebellious

  415. and stubborn.

  416. You shouldn't be amazed

  417. that I can mess up

  418. this badly.

  419. No,

  420. you should be amazed

  421. that I don't mess up

  422. this badly

  423. all the time

  424. because I know

  425. how messed up

  426. my heart is.

  427. Because the heart

  428. of the matter

  429. is the matter

  430. of my heart.

  431. I acted out wickedly

  432. because I had

  433. a wicked heart.

  434. David comes to God

  435. with brutal honesty,

  436. confessing his sin

  437. and begging God

  438. to do something

  439. to make it right.

  440. However,

  441. David's problem

  442. is too big

  443. for David alone

  444. to fix,

  445. which means

  446. that he must look

  447. outside himself

  448. for a solution.

  449. Which brings us

  450. to point to

  451. the only solution.

  452. He knows

  453. that his sin

  454. is his biggest problem,

  455. that his heart

  456. that leads him

  457. to sin

  458. is his biggest problem.

  459. He's created problems

  460. that he could never

  461. make right.

  462. no matter

  463. how hard

  464. David tried,

  465. there's nothing

  466. that he could do

  467. to bring Uriah

  468. back from the dead

  469. and give him

  470. back his wife.

  471. No amount

  472. of hard work,

  473. no amount

  474. of sacrifices,

  475. no amount

  476. of anything

  477. can undo

  478. the pain

  479. and destruction

  480. that David

  481. has caused

  482. through his actions.

  483. And even if

  484. there was something

  485. that he could do,

  486. he still recognizes

  487. that he has

  488. a wicked heart

  489. and his wicked heart

  490. is what led him

  491. to these actions

  492. in the first place

  493. and changing

  494. his behavior

  495. is not going

  496. to change

  497. his heart.

  498. Behavior modification

  499. doesn't lead

  500. to a transformed

  501. heart.

  502. And so for David's

  503. situation

  504. to have

  505. a positive solution,

  506. he needs

  507. that solution

  508. to come

  509. from someone

  510. outside himself.

  511. But the question

  512. is,

  513. who outside

  514. of David

  515. is big enough

  516. to fix

  517. David's problem?

  518. Think about it,

  519. he's the king.

  520. There's no earthly

  521. authority,

  522. no person

  523. on earth

  524. who has the

  525. authority

  526. to pardon him.

  527. He is the highest

  528. authority in the land.

  529. It's not like

  530. he can go to the king

  531. and get a pardon.

  532. He is the king.

  533. And,

  534. if you look

  535. at the Old Testament

  536. law,

  537. God makes provisions

  538. for people

  539. to get forgiveness

  540. for lots of sins.

  541. If you rob

  542. your neighbor,

  543. you make some sacrifices,

  544. you pay the neighbor

  545. back,

  546. and you're good.

  547. for adultery,

  548. there is nothing

  549. that you can do.

  550. The sentence is death.

  551. For murder,

  552. there is nothing

  553. that you can do.

  554. The sentence is death.

  555. And David hadn't done

  556. one or the other

  557. of these,

  558. he had done

  559. both of them.

  560. And so he comes

  561. to God

  562. and he says

  563. in verse 16,

  564. you would not delight

  565. in sacrifice

  566. or I would give it.

  567. You will not be pleased

  568. with a burnt offering.

  569. God,

  570. if there's anything

  571. that I could do

  572. to make things right,

  573. I would do it,

  574. but I know

  575. that I can't.

  576. I know

  577. that there's nothing

  578. within my power

  579. that I can do

  580. to fix my situation.

  581. So God,

  582. I'm turning to you

  583. because you

  584. are the only one

  585. that can make this right.

  586. He turns to God

  587. and he begs

  588. for a deep,

  589. deep mercy.

  590. If you look

  591. at the first two verses again

  592. and look at the words

  593. that David uses

  594. in his request to God,

  595. he says,

  596. have mercy on me,

  597. O God.

  598. This word mercy

  599. means to take pity

  600. and show kindness

  601. that he does not deserve.

  602. He says,

  603. according to your

  604. abundant mercy,

  605. blot out my transgressions.

  606. This word blot out,

  607. it's like if someone

  608. was writing an accusation

  609. in wax

  610. with a sharp instrument

  611. and as they're writing,

  612. instead of continuing writing,

  613. they turn the instrument

  614. and use the long edge

  615. to wipe out

  616. everything they've just written

  617. and erase any record

  618. that those accusations

  619. had ever been written.

  620. David says,

  621. God,

  622. please do that for me.

  623. I know that I am guilty,

  624. but wipe out

  625. any evidence

  626. that I have ever done

  627. this wrong.

  628. He says,

  629. wash me thoroughly

  630. from my iniquity.

  631. The picture here,

  632. the literal translation

  633. of that is multiply

  634. to wash me.

  635. The picture is

  636. of laundry

  637. with a stain on it,

  638. a big stain,

  639. and you need to wash this.

  640. And when you wash it,

  641. the stain is still there,

  642. so you wash it again

  643. and again and again

  644. and again and again

  645. until the stain is gone.

  646. David says,

  647. God,

  648. wash me

  649. over and over

  650. and over

  651. and over

  652. until the stain

  653. of my guilt

  654. is gone.

  655. and then he says,

  656. cleanse me

  657. from my sin.

  658. This word cleanse

  659. is a ceremonial picture

  660. of him saying,

  661. God,

  662. make me clean

  663. so that I can come

  664. into the temple

  665. and worship you

  666. because the Israelites

  667. needed to be

  668. ceremonially clean

  669. before they could come

  670. in and worship God.

  671. And David says,

  672. God,

  673. bring me back

  674. to a place

  675. where I can join

  676. with your people

  677. and worship you

  678. despite my sin

  679. despite my guilt.

  680. And something I want

  681. to just note quickly,

  682. we've been talking a lot

  683. in our series

  684. on the Psalms

  685. on the importance

  686. of honesty,

  687. being honest with God

  688. and being honest

  689. with ourselves

  690. about what's happening

  691. in our lives,

  692. where we're struggling.

  693. And one thing

  694. I want us to see today

  695. is that if we want

  696. to make true progress

  697. in our fight

  698. against the sin

  699. inside of us,

  700. we need to be honest

  701. with ourselves

  702. and with God

  703. about that sin.

  704. And David sets

  705. an amazing example

  706. of that in this chapter.

  707. You know,

  708. in my life,

  709. I have this tendency

  710. to downplay

  711. the sin inside me.

  712. I don't like

  713. to see the true

  714. depths of sin

  715. in my heart.

  716. When I speak words

  717. intended to hurt someone

  718. and they get offended,

  719. my initial response

  720. isn't to think,

  721. wow,

  722. I'm the type of person

  723. who speaks words

  724. intended to hurt.

  725. My initial response

  726. is,

  727. they're so sensitive,

  728. I can't believe

  729. they get upset

  730. over that.

  731. When in all honesty,

  732. the words that I spoke

  733. were spoken

  734. with the goal

  735. of hurting them.

  736. And as long

  737. as I brush off

  738. my sin

  739. as other people's problem,

  740. as inconsistencies

  741. within me,

  742. I'm never going

  743. to grow,

  744. I'm never going

  745. to make progress

  746. in becoming

  747. more like Jesus.

  748. And David here

  749. recognizes that.

  750. God,

  751. and he comes

  752. to God

  753. with brutal

  754. honesty

  755. and sets us

  756. an amazing example

  757. of the type

  758. of honesty

  759. that we should bring

  760. in our confession

  761. to God.

  762. Not brushing away

  763. our problems,

  764. not ignoring them,

  765. not blaming them

  766. on others,

  767. but taking full responsibility,

  768. but then turning

  769. to God

  770. and begging

  771. for mercy.

  772. But even though

  773. David sets us

  774. this great example

  775. of honesty

  776. that still doesn't

  777. solve his problem

  778. of where his solution

  779. is going to come from.

  780. Because you see,

  781. here's the problem.

  782. David here,

  783. he confesses his sin.

  784. In verse 4,

  785. he says,

  786. against you

  787. and you only

  788. have I sinned

  789. and done what is evil

  790. in your sight

  791. so that you may be

  792. justified in your words

  793. and blameless

  794. in your judgment.

  795. He praises

  796. God's justice.

  797. Which,

  798. oh by the way,

  799. demands that David

  800. die.

  801. And then

  802. he turns around

  803. in the next breath

  804. and pleads

  805. to God

  806. for mercy.

  807. Now there's

  808. a problem here.

  809. Because God's

  810. justice

  811. demands a payment

  812. for what

  813. David has done.

  814. God's justice

  815. demands

  816. death

  817. for the adultery

  818. and murder

  819. that David

  820. has committed.

  821. And yet David

  822. turns to God

  823. and he says,

  824. God,

  825. cleanse me.

  826. God,

  827. forgive me.

  828. God,

  829. and it appears

  830. at least on the surface

  831. that David

  832. is calling on God

  833. to go against

  834. his own character.

  835. God,

  836. ignore your justice

  837. so that I

  838. can be saved.

  839. So how is it

  840. possible

  841. that God

  842. can satisfy

  843. his justice

  844. and still show

  845. this mercy

  846. and forgiveness

  847. to David?

  848. David?

  849. Well,

  850. if you go back

  851. to the story

  852. of Nathan's

  853. confrontation

  854. with David,

  855. when David

  856. confesses,

  857. I have sinned,

  858. Nathan tells David,

  859. you will not die,

  860. but

  861. the child

  862. born from your

  863. relationship

  864. will die.

  865. And about

  866. a week later,

  867. the baby

  868. that Bathsheba

  869. had had

  870. after

  871. that night

  872. with David

  873. died.

  874. And you know

  875. what?

  876. The death

  877. of that baby

  878. still did not

  879. satisfy

  880. God's

  881. need

  882. for justice

  883. because just

  884. like David,

  885. that baby

  886. was born

  887. as a sinner.

  888. However,

  889. about a thousand

  890. years after

  891. David's sin,

  892. another

  893. descendant

  894. would be born

  895. from the

  896. line of

  897. David.

  898. And this

  899. descendant

  900. would be

  901. named

  902. Jesus,

  903. which means

  904. the Lord

  905. is salvation.

  906. And Jesus

  907. would live

  908. 33 years

  909. of perfect

  910. obedience

  911. to God.

  912. And after

  913. 33 years

  914. of perfect

  915. obedience

  916. to God,

  917. Jesus would

  918. stand on

  919. trial before

  920. a man

  921. named

  922. Pilate.

  923. And as

  924. the crowds

  925. shout out,

  926. crucify him,

  927. crucify him,

  928. crucify him,

  929. Pilate

  930. utters words

  931. that are

  932. eerily reminiscent

  933. of the words

  934. that Nathan

  935. spoke to

  936. David.

  937. Nathan said,

  938. you are

  939. the man.

  940. And as

  941. the crowds

  942. cry out,

  943. crucify him,

  944. crucify him,

  945. Pilate

  946. shouts out

  947. to the crowds,

  948. behold

  949. the man,

  950. Jesus.

  951. Hours

  952. later,

  953. Jesus is

  954. hung up

  955. on a cross.

  956. He dies.

  957. The one

  958. person in

  959. history

  960. who had

  961. lived the

  962. perfect life,

  963. the one

  964. person in

  965. history who

  966. did not

  967. deserve that

  968. death,

  969. is killed.

  970. And in

  971. that moment,

  972. as Jesus

  973. hung on

  974. the cross,

  975. God's

  976. justice

  977. for David's

  978. sin was

  979. satisfied

  980. because a

  981. debt of

  982. death

  983. was paid

  984. by someone

  985. who didn't

  986. owe it

  987. himself.

  988. And yet

  989. at the

  990. same moment,

  991. God's

  992. mercy is

  993. able to

  994. be shown

  995. to David

  996. because that

  997. debt was

  998. paid by

  999. a willing

  1000. substitute.

  1001. Jesus

  1002. was the

  1003. only solution

  1004. to David's

  1005. sin.

  1006. He was

  1007. the perfect

  1008. solution

  1009. to David's

  1010. sin.

  1011. sin.

  1012. And just

  1013. as Jesus

  1014. was the

  1015. only solution

  1016. to David's

  1017. sin and

  1018. the perfect

  1019. solution for

  1020. David's

  1021. sin,

  1022. Jesus is

  1023. also the

  1024. way that

  1025. God can

  1026. be just

  1027. today and

  1028. yet show

  1029. mercy to

  1030. you and

  1031. me in

  1032. the moments

  1033. of our

  1034. sin and

  1035. failure.

  1036. If you're

  1037. not a

  1038. Christian here

  1039. today,

  1040. I urge

  1041. you to

  1042. trust in

  1043. Jesus for

  1044. this

  1045. forgiveness

  1046. that God

  1047. offers us.

  1048. So we

  1049. have the

  1050. heart of

  1051. the problem

  1052. in sin.

  1053. We have the

  1054. only solution

  1055. in Jesus,

  1056. but then we

  1057. have a

  1058. life-changing

  1059. conclusion.

  1060. If you look

  1061. at verse 12

  1062. and 13,

  1063. it says,

  1064. restore to

  1065. me the joy

  1066. of your

  1067. salvation and

  1068. uphold me

  1069. with a

  1070. willing spirit.

  1071. Then I

  1072. will teach

  1073. transgressors

  1074. your ways and

  1075. sinners will

  1076. return to

  1077. you.

  1078. What we

  1079. see right

  1080. here is

  1081. that David

  1082. promises God,

  1083. if you

  1084. forgive me,

  1085. then I

  1086. will live

  1087. my life

  1088. on mission.

  1089. We have

  1090. these signs

  1091. up on the

  1092. stage every

  1093. week,

  1094. gospel,

  1095. community,

  1096. mission.

  1097. And there

  1098. is a

  1099. community

  1100. aspect to

  1101. this too,

  1102. but for

  1103. the sake

  1104. of time,

  1105. we're going

  1106. to skip

  1107. over that

  1108. today.

  1109. But what

  1110. we believe

  1111. here at

  1112. Watermark is

  1113. that as

  1114. we believe

  1115. the gospel,

  1116. which is

  1117. that good

  1118. news about

  1119. the forgiveness

  1120. that's available

  1121. to us in

  1122. Jesus,

  1123. that that

  1124. transforms our

  1125. hearts and

  1126. leads us to

  1127. live life in

  1128. community and

  1129. on mission,

  1130. going out and

  1131. telling others

  1132. this good news

  1133. about the

  1134. forgiveness and

  1135. life and hope

  1136. available to us

  1137. through the

  1138. sacrifice of

  1139. Jesus.

  1140. And David says

  1141. to God,

  1142. if you will

  1143. forgive me,

  1144. I will go and

  1145. tell everyone

  1146. about how amazing

  1147. and fantastic

  1148. you are and

  1149. how great your

  1150. forgiveness is.

  1151. God bless you

  1152. and if you're

  1153. here today and

  1154. you're a

  1155. Christian,

  1156. I want to

  1157. ask you,

  1158. how are you

  1159. doing with

  1160. sharing your

  1161. faith?

  1162. My challenge

  1163. to you,

  1164. share your

  1165. faith this

  1166. week.

  1167. And I know

  1168. we usually

  1169. want to focus

  1170. on heart

  1171. change,

  1172. not just

  1173. action change,

  1174. but this is

  1175. an action that

  1176. reveals what's

  1177. in our hearts.

  1178. I talk to

  1179. many Christians,

  1180. including myself,

  1181. yeah,

  1182. I talk to

  1183. myself,

  1184. who have

  1185. trouble with

  1186. this idea of

  1187. sharing our

  1188. faith.

  1189. It feels

  1190. awkward,

  1191. it feels

  1192. uncomfortable,

  1193. and I'm

  1194. going to throw

  1195. this out there.

  1196. I think the

  1197. reason so many

  1198. of us have

  1199. trouble sharing

  1200. with others

  1201. about who

  1202. Jesus is is

  1203. because we

  1204. haven't experienced

  1205. the type of

  1206. forgiveness that

  1207. David is

  1208. experiencing right

  1209. here.

  1210. I'm not talking

  1211. about forgiveness

  1212. for adultery and

  1213. murder, no,

  1214. I'm talking about

  1215. forgiveness that

  1216. goes down to

  1217. the core of

  1218. who we are.

  1219. Forgiveness that

  1220. confesses that

  1221. we're not good

  1222. people who just

  1223. had a bad

  1224. moment, but we're

  1225. sinners to the

  1226. core of our

  1227. being and we

  1228. need God to

  1229. rescue us from

  1230. the inside out.

  1231. I have lived so

  1232. much of my life

  1233. with this feeling

  1234. that I'm generally

  1235. a good person who

  1236. just needs God to

  1237. come in and help

  1238. me out around the

  1239. edges when I make

  1240. my occasional mess

  1241. ups.

  1242. And living my

  1243. life with that

  1244. attitude has led

  1245. to pride, it's

  1246. led to shame in

  1247. the moments where

1248. I do mess up, and

  1249. it's led to a fear

  1250. of sharing my

  1251. faith because what

  1252. will others think if

1253. they know that I do

  1254. occasionally mess up?

  1255. And the amazing news

  1256. of the gospel, the

  1257. amazing message of

  1258. this chapter is that

  1259. all of us are

  1260. desperately messed up

  1261. from the moment that

  1262. we were conceived

  1263. inside our mother's

  1264. wombs.

  1265. people who need

  1266. salvation from

  1267. outside of us.

  1268. It can be tempting

  1269. to look at David

  1270. and think, how could

  1271. he?

  1272. How could he steal

  1273. his neighbor's wife and

  1274. then have his neighbor

  1275. murdered to cover up

  1276. for him?

  1277. But if I'm being

  1278. totally honest, the

  1279. attitudes inside his

1280. heart that led him to

1281. do those things are all

  1282. present in my heart.

  1283. Lust,

  1284. self-centeredness,

  1285. and overwhelming

  1286. urge for self-preservation,

1287. all of these things are

  1288. present in my heart.

  1289. There's nothing about

  1290. what David did that's

  1291. any worse than the

  1292. desires inside my heart,

  1293. and I'm guessing all

  1294. of our hearts.

1295. All of us are sinful

  1296. like David.

1297. All of us need mercy

1298. like David, but all of

1299. us have a Savior in

1300. Jesus who has come to

1301. forgive us and make us

  1302. anew.

1303. And when we realize how

  1304. desperately wicked we are

  1305. and how amazingly,

  1306. abundantly merciful he

  1307. is, that should lead

  1308. to joy.

  1309. Because when we realize

1310. that we're worse than we

1311. ever dreamed, but we are

1312. more loved than we could

  1313. ever have hoped, we

  1314. realize that we are

  1315. free.

  1316. And when we're joyful

  1317. about something, we want

  1318. to share that with

  1319. others.

  1320. That's our natural

  1321. response as humans.

1322. Which is why David says,

  1323. God, I'm a sinner.

  1324. I need your mercy.

1325. But when I receive it,

1326. when I see how abundant

  1327. your forgiveness is, I

  1328. will share with others

  1329. about how great and

  1330. forgiving you are.

1331. And so my challenge for

1332. us today is to be honest

  1333. with ourselves and with

1334. God about the sin in our

1335. hearts, to turn to Jesus

1336. as the only solution for

1337. our problem, and then to

1338. live our lives on mission

1339. as a response to what God

  1340. has done for us.

  1341. And something that's

1342. really cool to me about

1343. this passage is that with

  1344. David, the sinful thing

1345. that he did, it could have

  1346. crushed him.

1347. It could have caused him to

1348. go run into a hole and

1349. hide because he didn't want

1350. anyone to see his face

1351. after knowing how messed up

  1352. he was.

1353. But instead, God takes this

  1354. moment of terrible decisions

  1355. and terrible consequences

1356. and uses it for something

  1357. good and beautiful in

  1358. David's life.

1359. He uses the sin to lead

1360. David to share with people

1361. of his day and with us

  1362. about how great God's

  1363. forgiveness is.

1364. And that same pattern of

  1365. God taking these things,

1366. these times of sin in our

  1367. lives and making something

  1368. beautiful out of them

  1369. carries through today as

  1370. well.

1371. The amazing truth is that

1372. God takes our sins and

  1373. makes them beautiful by

1374. using us as canvases where

1375. he can paint masterpieces of

1376. his mercy for the watching

  1377. world to see.

  1378. He paints masterpieces of

1379. his mercy in our lives for

1380. the watching world to see

1381. so that as we are forgiven,

1382. as we trust in this good

1383. news, others can be drawn

  1384. to him as well.

1385. And you know, God knows

  1386. that we're forgetful people.

1387. This message is so simple.

  1388. We're messed up.

  1389. Jesus saves us.

  1390. Yay.

1391. And yet in my life, I forget

  1392. that so often.

  1393. I forget step one, that I'm

  1394. messed up.

  1395. And I think I'm an okay

  1396. person.

1397. In the moments where I do

1398. mess up, I forget that Jesus

  1399. saves me.

1400. And then I forget to be

  1401. thankful and celebrate him.

  1402. And God, knowing how

1403. forgetful we are, has built

1404. into the rhythm of the

  1405. church's life, certain

1406. things to remind us of his

1407. great love and his great

  1408. mercy.

1409. And one of those things is

  1410. communion.

1411. As we gather for communion,

1412. this is a time that God has

1413. given us to remind ourselves

1414. and to proclaim to the world

1415. around us the fact that Jesus

  1416. is our only solution.

1417. As we eat the bread that's a

1418. picture of Christ's body for us,

1419. and as we drink the wine that's

  1420. a picture of his blood, it's a

  1421. way of physically reminding

1422. ourselves of the fact that the

1423. blood of Jesus is perfect, is

1424. enough to forgive us for our

  1425. sins.

1426. And as we eat the bread and

1427. drink the wine, we're showing

1428. those around us and proclaiming

1429. to the world around us that we

1430. do believe that the blood of

1431. Jesus is all we need to forgive

  1432. us for our sins.

  1433. Amen.

  1434. Amen.

  1435. Amen.

  1436. Amen.

  1437. Amen.

  1438. Amen.

  1439. Amen.

  1440. Amen.

  1441. Amen.

  1442. Amen.

  1443. Amen.

  1444. Amen.

  1445. Amen.
