  1. But we're going to be in Matthew chapter 22. Before we read, I just want to speak to the boys and girls for a couple of minutes just so we're all set for reading and knowing what this story is about.

    Matthew 22 chapter mention

  2. Jesus is going to tell one of his many stories called parables and it's about an amazing invitation.

  3. So quick show of hands, boys and girls, if you've ever been invited to a friend's house for a play date, put up your hands.

  4. Okay, so that's lots of boys and girls. Excellent. Okay, who's ever been invited to a birthday party? Put up your hands.

  5. Okay, lots of you. Okay, this one might mean less hands.

  6. Who's ever been invited to a special kind of party, a fancy dress party? Anyone been invited to one of those?

  7. Oh, a bit less. Oh, sun's been. So less people to a fancy dress party.

  8. Who's ever been invited to a very special occasion like a wedding? Hands up if you've been to a wedding before.

  9. Ah, so more weddings than fancy dress parties and weddings. Well, kind of different fancy dress, isn't it?

  10. Now, okay, so you know what invitations are. You've enjoyed lots of them.

  11. Let me ask, boys and girls, have any of you ever been invited to the Queen's house for tea?

  12. No.

  13. Were any of you at either of the fairly recent royal weddings?

  14. No, any of the adults managed to hook themselves one of those invitations? No.

  15. No.

  16. This is what our story is about.

  17. Jesus is going to say, you and I are given an invitation by God to something amazing.

  18. Actually, to something even more amazing than a king's or a queen's wedding feast.

  19. God gives us an invitation to know him and to enjoy him by trusting in Jesus.

  20. And Jesus says, the kingdom of heaven, life with God is like the most amazing feast, the most amazing party ever.

  21. Really, because God is there.

  22. That's the best thing.

  23. Heaven is going to be wonderful because Jesus will be there.

  24. But like every invitation we get, we have two answers that we can possibly get.

  25. So for all of you who've been to parties, you obviously at some point said, yes, I'd like to go.

  26. Sometimes we have to say no because we're not able to go.

  27. Maybe you're so popular you get two party invitations for the same day and you have to choose.

  28. Sometimes we say no because we don't want to go.

  29. So the Bible invites us, God invites us, Jesus invites us to the most important thing that you could ever imagine.

  30. And all of us, however young or however old we are, we need to decide how we are going to respond to his invitation.

  31. So in our story, we're going to find some people who say no to Jesus.

  32. And we're going to find some people who say yes to Jesus.

  33. And those people who say yes, they end up receiving all the joy.

  34. They're part of the feast.

  35. So boys and girls, our prayer for you is that you'd be those who would say yes to Jesus.

  36. That you would understand the joy that he offers.

  37. And so we'll read this story and you can think about the invitations you've had.

  38. Think about the invitation that this king offers.

  39. And most of all, think about how you want to respond to Jesus.

  40. So let's read together from Matthew chapter 22.

    Matthew 22 chapter mention

  41. Jesus spoke to them again in parables saying,

  42. The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son.

  43. He sent his servants to those who'd been invited to the banquet to tell them to come, but they refused to come.

  44. Then he sent some more servants and said,

  45. Tell those who have been invited that I have prepared my dinner.

  46. My oxen and fattened cattle have been slaughtered and everything is ready.

  47. Come to the wedding banquet.

  48. But they paid no attention and went off.

  49. One to his field, another to his business.

  50. The rest seized his servants, ill-treated them and killed them.

  51. The king was enraged.

  52. He sent his army and destroyed those murderers and burned their city.

  53. Then he said to his servants,

  54. The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited did not deserve to come.

  55. Go to the street corners and invite to the banquet anyone you find.

  56. So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the people they could find, both good and bad.

  57. And the wedding hall was filled with guests.

  58. But when the king came in to see the guests,

  59. he noticed a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes.

  60. Friend, he asked,

  61. How did you get in here without wedding clothes?

  62. The man was speechless.

  63. Then the king told the attendants,

  64. Tie him hand and foot and throw him outside into the darkness,

  65. where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

  66. For many are invited, but few are chosen.

  67. We're going to continue to discover more amazing grace in Matthew's gospel.

  68. Grace, God's free and undeserved kindness to broken, sinful people such as ourselves.

  69. Last week, the God of grace was inviting us to rest.

  70. This week, the God of grace invites us to the feast.

  71. So today's story, as we talked with the children,

  72. in some ways has sort of normal elements that we recognize,

  73. but also has an out of this world kind of aside to it as well,

  74. because we've all received invitations.

  75. Some of those have been expected.

  76. Some have perhaps taken us by surprise.

  77. We are familiar with the idea now of sending a save the date for a big event.

  78. We know what it is when we receive an RSVP and we need to respond by a certain time.

  79. We also know too that sometimes we receive invitations where there is an expected dress code,

  80. perhaps a black tie event or something similar.

  81. So we know what it is to find ourselves invited and to be part of a guest list.

  82. But here, Jesus is reminding us of the wonderful thing about God's invitation

  83. when He pictures an invitation from a king to the feast,

  84. to the wedding feast that He is throwing for His Son.

  85. As Jesus is telling the story and the people are thinking,

  86. well, to be on that guest list would truly to be have made it.

  87. We have arrived.

  88. We have access to the highest honor and privilege if our king invites us to a feast.

  89. So that's our setting for today,

  90. the invitation to the wedding feast of a king for His Son.

  91. And we want to think in this story, how do we see the grace of God through the story?

  92. And how do we respond to the grace of God as we see different responses in the story?

  93. Before we get into it, some important background questions to cover really quickly.

  94. When does Jesus tell this story?

  95. It's important to remember parables are not just free-floating stories.

  96. They have a setting and a context.

  97. In chapter 21, at the beginning, we're told of Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem,

  98. riding on the donkey as God's promised servant king.

  99. And this ushers in the week before the cross.

  100. So triumphal entry into Jerusalem.

  101. Seven days later, He will have been killed.

  102. And so this week in between where this parable takes place is when the conflict

  103. between Jesus and the religious leaders who oppose Him reaches its climax.

  104. And that's important background.

  105. Because who does Jesus tell this story to?

  106. Verse 1 of chapter 22, it says,

  107. Jesus spoke to them.

  108. He's already been speaking to a particular group of people.

  109. If you turn back to chapter 21 and verse 45,

  110. when the chief priests and the Pharisees heard Jesus' parables,

  111. they knew He was talking about them.

  112. So there is a particular audience in mind,

  113. this group who presumed that they were insiders.

  114. Well, if anyone's in the kingdom of God, it's bound to be us.

  115. And so Jesus tells stories that explode their spiritual religious pride.

  116. They are the group who are resisting and rejecting Jesus.

  117. And because of that, and we'll see this in the story,

  118. they are not those who are part of God's kingdom.

  119. Again, tied up with that, how does Jesus tell this story?

  120. There are some extreme elements in the story.

  121. Did you notice some of the more surprising language?

  122. The king that sends an army to destroy murderers.

  123. The attendants who bind someone hand and foot

  124. and throw them out into the darkness.

  125. How does Jesus tell this story?

  126. He tells this story as God's true prophet.

  127. Just like in the Old Testament,

  128. here is Jesus the prophet announcing judgment

  129. on those who are robbing God of His glory,

  130. those who are dishonoring God as they dishonor His son Jesus.

  131. And so this parable, like the Old Testament prophets,

  132. is inviting the people to see the consequences

  133. of rejecting God and His rule.

  134. So why does Jesus tell this story?

  135. Two reasons.

  136. One, to show how wide God's invitation of grace goes out.

  137. And we've seen this in the mission of Jesus,

  138. how quick He is to welcome outsiders,

  139. to welcome those who are rejected by others,

  140. who are on the margins of society.

  141. But in Jesus' mission, those outsiders

  142. who recognize their spiritual need,

  143. they are brought in.

  144. Here, they're brought into the feast.

  145. And so it's a reminder to us, again,

  146. of just how wide God's invitation of grace is.

  147. But He's also telling the stories we've already said

  148. to make clear the consequences that come

  149. from our response to God's King

  150. and the invitation that He offers.

  151. There's two consequences.

  152. Either deadly destruction or joyful life.

  153. There is no middle ground as the invitation to life with God goes out.

  154. Now, let's think about this.

  155. What is this story?

  156. Let's look at the details together to see what we can learn.

  157. Verse 2, Jesus said,

  158. The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son.

  159. So this is the king's feast.

  160. And this feast represents the kingdom of heaven,

  161. this kingdom that is dawned at the coming of Jesus.

  162. And as we've seen in the life of Jesus,

  163. invitations to be part of the kingdom,

  164. to repent and believe, are going out.

  165. And they're still going out.

  166. We're still being invited to this feast today.

  167. And as we see in the story,

  168. as we see in the life of Jesus,

  169. there are still two types of response.

  170. One that says yes,

  171. one that says no.

  172. Now, in the time of Jesus,

  173. it was typical when somebody was arranging a special event like a feast,

  174. there would be a double invitation.

  175. So this king would have to send out servants to say,

  176. this wedding is going to take place so that he would get initial acceptance from those who were to be invited.

  177. Kind of like the equivalent of our save the day.

  178. It's coming in the future.

  179. Are you going to come?

  180. And then as the time for the wedding drew near,

  181. as the food was ready,

  182. another message would go out through,

  183. I guess, through the kingdom perhaps,

  184. saying, okay, now is the time.

  185. That feast that you said you were going to come to,

  186. now is the time to arrive.

  187. And remember,

  188. this is the king's feast

  189. that we are being invited to,

  190. or these folks in the story are being invited to.

  191. So let's look at the king's invitations,

  192. because there's two.

  193. First of all, in verse 3,

  194. he sent his servants to those who'd been invited to the banquet

  195. to tell them to come.

  196. So that's standard practice.

  197. Everything's ready.

  198. Now's the time to come.

  199. And that makes what happens next so outrageous.

  200. They refused to come.

  201. That's a shocking refusal.

  202. They've been invited into joy, honor, privilege,

  203. and they simply turn their back.

  204. But the king is not done.

  205. There's a second invitation that goes out to this group.

  206. He sent more servants,

  207. and he said,

  208. tell those who've been invited that I've prepared my dinner.

  209. My oxen and fattened calf have been slaughtered,

  210. and everything is ready.

  211. Come to the wedding banquet.

  212. Here is insight into the incredible patience

  213. and mercy and grace of God.

  214. And grace of God is pictured in this king.

  215. He doesn't simply do away with these people who have treated him so badly.

  216. Rather, he highlights the greatness of what's in store.

  217. He's saying,

  218. there's nothing but the best.

  219. I have done everything to get this wonderful feast ready.

  220. Please come.

  221. He's giving them every opportunity,

  222. every invitation.

  223. But despite that,

  224. the king is rejected.

  225. Verse 5,

  226. they paid no attention

  227. and went off one to his field,

  228. another to his business.

  229. The rest seized his servants,

  230. ill-treated them,

  231. and killed them.

  232. Again,

  233. if we put ourselves in the crowd,

  234. as Jesus tells this story,

  235. this would have created a sense of high scandal.

  236. In an honor and shame culture,

  237. you just do not do this to anybody,

  238. never mind the king.

  239. Here is the glory of the king

  240. and his feast being trampled upon

  241. and being regarded as nothing.

  242. As one group says,

  243. do you know what?

  244. We've got more important things to do.

  245. So they ignore the invitation.

  246. And then you have the other group

  247. who begin violent attacks on the king's servants

  248. and in doing so,

  249. are engaged in a violent attack on the king

  250. and his honor.

  251. Here is open rebellion.

  252. Here is down with the king.

  253. Here is let's find ways to dishonor

  254. this king who has invited us

  255. to receive his grace and kindness.

  256. And then in verses 7 and 10,

  257. we see the king's responses,

  258. and there are two.

  259. Verse 7,

  260. the king was enraged.

  261. He sent his army

  262. and destroyed those murderers

  263. and burned their city.

  264. destruction is one response.

  265. The king has been rejected,

  266. abused,

  267. attacked.

  268. And remember the context.

  269. This is during the time

  270. when the religious leaders

  271. are plotting to kill Jesus.

  272. But that very graphic language

  273. stands out to us

  274. and is a clue for us

  275. that Jesus is speaking as a prophet,

  276. that this is about the kingdom of heaven.

  277. This isn't simply a nice story

  278. about a wedding feast.

  279. And this is all about

  280. how the people are responding

  281. to Jesus.

  282. So there's that first response

  283. of destruction,

  284. but then there's the second response

  285. from verse 8 to verse 10.

  286. He said to his servants,

  287. the wedding banquet is ready,

  288. but those I invited

  289. did not deserve to come.

  290. Go to the street corners

  291. and invite to the banquet

  292. anyone you find.

  293. So the servants went out

  294. into the streets

  295. and gathered all the people

  296. they could find,

  297. both good and bad,

  298. and the wedding hall

  299. was filled with guests.

  300. So here is incredible grace

  301. and kindness.

  302. He throws wide open

  303. the invitation to the feast,

  304. to honor, to joy, and to glory.

  305. It's open to anyone

  306. who will come.

  307. Both good and bad are here.

  308. That would have been

  309. a great ending

  310. if we were looking

  311. for a happily ever after,

  312. wouldn't it?

  313. Here is the feast beginning

  314. and the crowds

  315. have filled up the space.

  316. But as Jesus sometimes does

  317. with his parables,

  318. he has a sting in the tail.

  319. There is this end-of-story stress,

  320. and we see it in verse 11 onwards

  321. with the king's demand.

  322. When the king came in

  323. to see the guests,

  324. he noticed a man there

  325. who was not wearing

  326. wedding clothes.

  327. Friend, he asked,

  328. how did you get in here

  329. without wedding clothes?

  330. The man was speechless.

  331. Whether good or bad,

  332. everyone knows

  333. there is a dress code.

  334. The people at the feast

  335. must do two things.

  336. They must receive

  337. the invitation,

  338. and they must follow

  339. the demands of the invitation,

  340. so they must dress appropriately.

  341. So this man here,

  342. he is confronted.

  343. He has chosen

  344. not to wear

  345. the appropriate clothing,

  346. and he knows

  347. he is guilty.

  348. He knows

  349. he has done wrong.

  350. I have a recurring dream,

  351. which is something

  352. of a nightmare,

  353. in which I'm invited

  354. to speak

  355. in a church,

  356. and I turn up

  357. in my pajamas.

  358. Do you know,

  359. I'm very grateful

  360. I can wake up

  361. at that point

  362. and realize

  363. this is just a horrible dream.

  364. The outcome

  365. of wearing

  366. the wrong clothes

  367. in this story

  368. is no laughing matter,

  369. though, is it?

  370. The outcome

  371. is to be thrown out

  372. to experience

  373. the king's judgment

  374. for failing

  375. to meet

  376. the king's demands,

  377. and Jesus concludes

  378. in verse 14,

  379. for many are invited,

  380. but few are chosen.

  381. The invitation

  382. to the kingdom of heaven

  383. goes far and wide,

  384. but many refuse

  385. to accept,

  386. and many refuse

  387. to follow its demands.

  388. So that's the story.

  389. And what I want to do now

  390. is to think briefly

  391. about what lessons

  392. can we learn

  393. from the main characters.

  394. I want us to think

  395. about this king

  396. and to see that God

  397. invites us

  398. to enjoy his grace

  399. through Jesus.

  400. Even the setting

  401. of this story,

  402. the fact that it's

  403. a wedding feast

  404. and it's the king's

  405. wedding feast,

  406. reminds us

  407. of the privilege

  408. and the honor

  409. to which we are called.

  410. Invited to know God

  411. is the greatest privilege

  412. imaginable.

  413. And then we think about

  414. who's telling the story.

  415. Here's Jesus,

  416. and Jesus in his life

  417. was constantly

  418. eating with people,

  419. and those were meals

  420. with a mission.

  421. As he invited the poor,

  422. as he invited the despised,

  423. as he invited the physically

  424. and spiritually needy

  425. to feast with him,

  426. they were feasting

  427. with God's king.

  428. It's a great picture

  429. of that invitation of grace

  430. that's open to us all.

  431. Jesus is still inviting us

  432. to enjoy a full life,

  433. a joyful life,

  434. with God

  435. by faith

  436. in him.

  437. In this parable,

  438. the king speaks

  439. about the great cost

  440. that he has gone to

  441. to prepare the feast.

  442. Now,

  443. we know for us

  444. God's grace,

  445. God's kindness

  446. comes to us

  447. as a free gift.

  448. It's free for us

  449. to receive.

  450. But there was a cost

  451. to Jesus,

  452. which Jesus

  453. was well aware of.

  454. Here he is

  455. in this last week

  456. before the cross.

  457. And God had chosen

  458. for his son

  459. to walk that path

  460. of suffering

  461. and death

  462. so that we might

  463. be forgiven,

  464. so that we might

  465. be clothed

  466. in the perfect righteousness

  467. of Jesus Christ,

  468. so that we might,

  469. by faith,

  470. receive the hospitality

  471. of the king,

  472. so that we might feast

  473. and have real joy.

  474. We have a remarkable

  475. God

  476. pictured here

  477. as this king,

  478. a king who is willing

  479. to overlook

  480. the shame

  481. that we bring on him,

  482. a king who is willing

  483. to overlook

  484. the rejection

  485. and the disobedience

  486. shown to him.

  487. Day by day,

  488. he is willing

  489. and patient

  490. to forgive us

  491. and to show us grace.

  492. So there is hope

  493. for any of us

  494. here today,

  495. whatever our past sin

  496. and our past shame.

  497. However,

  498. in the past,

  499. we may have ignored

  500. the call of Jesus.

  501. He is willing

  502. to forgive

  503. and to save

  504. and to bring you

  505. to the feast.

  506. There's a great picture

  507. in verse 9

  508. of the servants

  509. being sent

  510. to the street corners.

  511. This king

  512. who is willing

  513. to invite any,

  514. to show honor

  515. and to extend joy

  516. to any,

  517. whoever

  518. we might be.

  519. We might be used

  520. to missing out

  521. when invitations

  522. are handed out.

  523. We might be used

  524. to not earning

  525. the approval

  526. of others,

  527. of having people

  528. think not much

  529. of us

  530. and perhaps we don't

  531. think much

  532. of ourselves.

  533. But the good news

  534. of God's grace

  535. is that in Christ

  536. we don't have to fight

  537. to earn God's approval.

  538. God approves

  539. of us

  540. when we are in Christ

  541. and He gives us

  542. honor

  543. and He welcomes us.

  544. And so we find

  545. in this king

  546. a picture of God

  547. and a God

  548. who invites us

  549. to enjoy His grace

  550. through Jesus.

  551. But we also have

  552. attention drawn

  553. to those first guests

  554. who are invited

  555. who refuse

  556. to come to the feast.

  557. And that reminds us

  558. that rejecting

  559. the invitation

  560. of God's grace

  561. leads to

  562. deadly destruction.

  563. We've already said it.

  564. Jesus as God's prophet

  565. is announcing judgment.

  566. Jesus as God's king

  567. has the authority

  568. to judge.

  569. And here He is speaking

  570. a solemn word

  571. to those who

  572. persistently

  573. and deliberately,

  574. violently

  575. were opposing

  576. and rejecting Him

  577. and we'd conspire

  578. together to have

  579. Him murdered.

  580. So Jesus is speaking

  581. to the Pharisees

  582. but there are lessons

  583. for each one of us.

  584. So as we think

  585. about the response

  586. of these guests,

  587. examine yourself,

  588. examine your heart.

  589. Do I recognize

  590. any of these attitudes

  591. in my own heart

  592. and life?

  593. If you're here today

  594. and you're not a Christian,

  595. do you see

  596. the danger

  597. through the story

  598. of that position?

  599. Let's look at

  600. the different ways

  601. people reject

  602. the king's invitation

  603. which is a picture

  604. ultimately

  605. of rejecting Jesus.

  606. First,

  607. there is the group

  608. that ignore Him.

  609. Verse 5,

  610. they pay no attention.

  611. One goes off

  612. to his field,

  613. another to his business.

  614. Too busy

  615. for their king.

  616. I wonder today

  617. if any of us

  618. find ourselves

  619. so busy

  620. with life,

  621. so busy

  622. with work

  623. and responsibilities

  624. that we've never

  625. really taken the time

  626. to think carefully

  627. for ourselves

  628. about

  629. who is Jesus

  630. and what has Jesus done?

  631. Because the claims

  632. that He makes

  633. and the actions

  634. that He takes

  635. are so profound

  636. that they demand

  637. our response.

  638. Neil Postman

  639. a number of years ago

  640. wrote a book

  641. called

  642. Amusing Ourselves

  643. Today.

  644. It's entirely possible

  645. spiritually

  646. to be so busy

  647. with pleasure

  648. or so busy

  649. working ourselves

  650. to death

  651. that we never

  652. take time

  653. to think about

  654. the realities

  655. of eternity.

  656. There are

  657. serious implications

  658. for putting

  659. other things

  660. ahead

  661. of this

  662. invitation.

  663. As Jesus

  664. said another time,

  665. what good is it

  666. to gain the whole world

  667. but lose

  668. your eternal soul?

  669. What good is it

  670. for these men

  671. to go off

  672. to their fields

  673. to work

  674. but then

  675. to find the king

  676. who comes

  677. to destroy them

  678. for their

  679. resistance

  680. of him?

  681. So we can

  682. reject Jesus

  683. simply by ignoring

  684. him and his claims.

  685. There's another

  686. way to reject

  687. Jesus

  688. and that's to

  689. deliberately

  690. rebel

  691. against the king

  692. and that's what

  693. we see in verse 6

  694. when they seize

  695. the king's servants

  696. ill-treat them

  697. and kill

  698. them.

  699. R.C.

  700. Sproul

  701. talks about

  702. the sin

  703. of cosmic

  704. treason.

  705. God is the king

  706. we owe

  707. our allegiance

  708. and honour

  709. to

  710. but in our

  711. own hearts

  712. we can be so

  713. quick to try

  714. and remove

  715. God from the

  716. throne of our

  717. lives so that

  718. we can occupy

  719. that place.

  720. God has

  721. made us

  722. so that we

  723. would know

  724. and enjoy

  725. and give

  726. him glory

  727. in our

  728. lives

  729. but we

  730. can

  731. deliberately

  732. rob God

  733. of glory

  734. because we

  735. want life

  736. to be

  737. about us.

  738. We like

  739. Adam

  740. and like

  741. Eve in the

  742. garden

  743. can believe

  744. the lie

  745. that true

  746. freedom,

  747. true happiness

  748. is found

  749. in leaving

  750. God and

  751. his word

  752. behind

  753. in living

  754. and setting

  755. our own

  756. rules

  757. and setting

  758. our own

  759. direction

  760. salvation.

  761. So that

  762. we can

  763. in our

  764. own

  765. mind

  766. just like

  767. the people

  768. in this

  769. story

  770. we can

  771. find

  772. ourselves

  773. at war

  774. with

  775. God

  776. hostile

  777. to him

  778. not wanting

  779. to hear

  780. his claims

  781. or demands

  782. because we

  783. are a rival

  784. king

  785. to God.

  786. But that's

  787. not the

  788. only way

  789. to reject

  790. God's

  791. grace

  792. in the

  793. sending

  794. of Jesus.

  795. There's

  796. one last

  797. way and

  798. that's

  799. represented

  800. by the

  801. man who

  802. wasn't

  803. wearing

  804. the

  805. wedding

  806. clothes.

  807. We

  808. can

  809. resist

  810. the

  811. king's

  812. demands.

  813. Clearly

  814. there was

  815. the expectation

  816. that the

  817. guests would

  818. wear

  819. appropriate

  820. clothing.

  821. Everybody

  822. else in

  823. the feast

  824. good and

  825. bad

  826. they were

  827. doing that

  828. except for

  829. this one

  830. representative

  831. man who

  832. in his

  833. pride has

  834. said I

  835. will make

  836. my own

  837. path.

  838. I will

  839. set my

  840. own

  841. standard

  842. of

  843. goodness.

  844. And we

  845. can do

  846. that in

  847. our own

  848. lives when

  849. we get it

  850. into our

  851. heads that

  852. our goodness

  853. or our

  854. religion are

  855. our way to

  856. pay our

  857. way into

  858. the kingdom

  859. of God.

  860. Where we

  861. fail to believe

  862. that it's by

  863. grace we're

  864. saved through

  865. faith and

  866. instead we

  867. are persuaded

  868. that we

  869. have to

  870. earn it

  871. and that

  872. we can

  873. by ourselves

  874. earn it.

  875. In which

  876. case we

  877. of necessity

  878. find ourselves

  879. saying I

  880. don't need

  881. Jesus or I

  882. need Jesus but

  883. I also need to

  884. contribute to

  885. my salvation

  886. and it's

  887. pride.

  888. And it's

  889. resisting the

  890. demands of a

  891. king who

  892. simply says

  893. come and

  894. receive what

  895. I have

  896. provided.

  897. Receive the

  898. wedding clothes

  899. which when we

  900. think about how

  901. it's pictured in

  902. the New Testament

  903. is to put on

  904. the righteousness

  905. of Christ.

  906. To receive what

  907. he has done for

  908. us on the

  909. cross and to

  910. humbly accept

  911. that as a

  912. gift.

  913. This story

  914. makes it very

  915. clear for us

  916. that with any

  917. invitation there

  918. is an accepted

  919. or a rejected

  920. choice.

  921. We either say

  922. yes to Jesus

  923. or no to

  924. Jesus.

  925. Jesus himself

  926. said he who

  927. is not for

  928. me is against

  929. me.

  930. There is no

  931. neutral ground,

  932. there is no

  933. sitting on the

  934. fence when it

  935. comes to

  936. Jesus.

  937. And so the

  938. shocking elements

  939. of this story

  940. Jesus gives to

  941. us in order to

  942. wake us up.

  943. Just like the

  944. prophets of the

  945. Old Testament,

  946. they brought

  947. news of

  948. impending judgment

  949. to shock the

  950. people into

  951. repentance and

  952. faith.

  953. Jesus wants us

  954. to see the

  955. horror of

  956. ignoring and

  957. rebelling against

  958. and resisting

  959. our good and

  960. gracious King.

  961. And he wants

  962. to show us the

  963. urgency of our

  964. need to respond

  965. positively to

  966. Jesus.

  967. One of the

  968. things that this

  969. story reminds us

  970. of is that grace

  971. is only grace if

  972. the outcome should

  973. be different.

  974. By rights,

  975. because of our

  976. rebellion against

  977. God, we should

  978. all experience

  979. judgment.

  980. But only in

  981. Jesus is there

  982. grace and

  983. salvation.

  984. And so we need

  985. to receive that

  986. invitation.

  987. And that takes us

  988. to our last

  989. group.

  990. The group that

  991. find themselves in

  992. the feast.

  993. And they remind us

  994. that receiving the

  995. invitation of God's

  996. grace leads to

  997. joyful life.

  998. The story reminds

  999. us that God's

  1000. guest list is full

  1001. of surprises.

  1002. Jesus' life on

  1003. earth and his

  1004. mission shows us

  1005. that God's guest

  1006. list is full of

  1007. surprises.

  1008. Now we're told

  1009. anyone, verse 10,

  1010. both good and bad,

  1011. in the world's eyes

  1012. or indeed in our

  1013. own eyes, if we

  1014. believe in Jesus,

  1015. we will be in

  1016. the feast.

  1017. Because it's about

  1018. grace and it's not

  1019. about merit.

  1020. It's not about rank

  1021. or status.

  1022. It's about, do I

  1023. see my need?

  1024. Do I trust the

  1025. goodness of God,

  1026. my King, and the

  1027. sending of Jesus,

  1028. his Saviour, to

  1029. forgive my sin and

  1030. to give me new

  1031. life?

  1032. How do we enter

  1033. the feast?

  1034. We be thinking

  1035. about God's grace,

  1036. but what's our

  1037. part?

  1038. There's faith

  1039. involved, isn't

  1040. there?

  1041. We need in the

  1042. first place to say

  1043. yes to the

  1044. invitation.

  1045. We need to say

  1046. yes that we want

  1047. to come to

  1048. Jesus, that we

  1049. want to have him

  1050. as our Lord, that

  1051. we trust that what

  1052. he did on the

  1053. cross, he did for

  1054. me to deal with

  1055. my sin, to give

  1056. me new life with

  1057. God.

  1058. And we also, as

  1059. the story shows us,

  1060. we need to obey

  1061. the dress code.

  1062. We need to come

  1063. dressed in the

  1064. right way.

  1065. And that's not

  1066. coming dressed in

  1067. our own goodness.

  1068. We don't come

  1069. saying, well, look

1070. at my good deeds, I

  1071. should be in the

  1072. kingdom of heaven.

  1073. And we come

  1074. clothed in the

  1075. righteousness of

  1076. Christ.

  1077. It takes us back

  1078. to that great

  1079. exchange that

  1080. happens at the

  1081. cross.

  1082. Jesus takes our

  1083. sin and he

  1084. gifts us his

  1085. perfect record of

  1086. righteousness.

  1087. God sees us in

  1088. Christ, perfectly

  1089. righteous in him so

1090. that we are able to

  1091. enjoy life with God.

  1092. We can be welcomed

  1093. and accepted when we

  1094. are in Christ.

  1095. And because of that,

1096. we get to enjoy life

  1097. in the feast.

  1098. It's a great picture of

  1099. the kingdom of heaven,

  1100. isn't it?

1101. It reminds us of the

1102. joy that we have as

  1103. Christians.

  1104. I read an article by a

  1105. guy called Randy

1106. Alcorn this week and he

  1107. said, Christianity is

  1108. not a frowning

  1109. context.

  1110. Sometimes, perhaps

  1111. that's the image or

  1112. the message that we

  1113. portray to the

  1114. world.

  1115. Rather, Jesus is

  1116. saying, by faith in

  1117. him we enter this

  1118. feast.

  1119. We are brought into

  1120. this good news of

  1121. great joy.

  1122. We have this prospect

  1123. of happiness now and

  1124. eternal happiness to

  1125. follow.

  1126. So that actually the

1127. joy that we have as

  1128. Christians should be a

  1129. crucial part of our

  1130. mission.

  1131. As we're inviting

  1132. others to come to

  1133. Jesus, people should

  1134. be saying, what's the

  1135. basis for your hope?

  1136. What's the basis for

  1137. your joy?

  1138. This is different from

  1139. the kind of happiness

  1140. that I'm pursuing which

  1141. comes and goes.

  1142. Yours seems lasting

  1143. and solid.

1144. So joy is part of our

  1145. mission because joy is

  1146. our ultimate destination.

1147. And joy is what we

  1148. have now when our

  1149. faith is in Jesus.

1150. God in Jesus, his son,

  1151. invites us to the

  1152. feast.

  1153. The guests here were

  1154. surprised by the

  1155. invitation of the king.

  1156. And it's sometimes,

  1157. isn't it, it's the

  1158. surprising invitations

  1159. that bring us surprising

  1160. and wonderful joy.

  1161. We still remember and

  1162. talk about that time

1163. years ago when we were

  1164. on holiday in Corsica,

  1165. one of the French

  1166. islands and we'd gone

  1167. for a day trip to a

  1168. fairly remote beach

  1169. and we'd missed the

1170. bus and so we were

  1171. stranded and hitchhiking

  1172. in this really remote

  1173. part of Corsica when

  1174. somebody drove along

  1175. who'd just been back

  1176. from a fishing trip.

1177. And it turned out he

  1178. was the ex-chief of

  1179. police in Corsica, a

1180. man who was very both

  1181. familiar and fond of

  1182. Glasgow.

1183. And so there was a

1184. great chat and then we

1185. got invited back to his

  1186. mansion.

1187. And we had a wonderful

  1188. dinner with his family

1189. and we stayed in touch

1190. for a number of years

1191. and it was a wonderful

  1192. and surprising invitation.

1193. God in his mercy and his

1194. grace invites us to so

  1195. much more than that,

  1196. doesn't he?

  1197. To a feast that we don't

1198. deserve, a feast that we

1199. don't need to earn the

  1200. invitation for.

1201. He has sent his son

1202. Jesus, he has paid the

1203. great cost to invite us to

1204. the feast, to provide that

  1205. clothing of his

  1206. righteousness so we can

1207. come in and know our

  1208. God.

1209. To have that joy that

1210. begins now, to have that

1211. joy that lasts for all

  1212. eternity.

1213. So today, will you come?

1214. Will you come to this

  1215. feast?

1216. Will you enjoy life with

1217. God through faith in Jesus?

  1218. And if that's where you're

  1219. at, if you're already

1220. feasting on that joy, will

  1221. you share that invitation

  1222. with others, continuing

  1223. that mission to bring

1224. others to know the joy

  1225. there is in Jesus?

  1226. Thanks.

  1227. Trans suspected
