  1. Father, we've had lots of difficulties this morning with our sound system and other things.

  2. And Father, we are really very, very glad that we don't have to lean upon and depend

  3. upon things like sound systems, but that we are to lean upon you.

  4. So Father, at this time we ask that you would help us to lean upon you and lean into you.

  5. We ask, Father, that your Holy Spirit would move deeply in our lives as we hear your word.

  6. Lord, bring your word home to us, to the very center of our heart, so we might confess that

  7. Jesus is Lord and that we might, Father, be gripped by the gospel, learning to live for

  8. your glory.

  9. And all this we ask in the name of Jesus.

  10. Amen.

  11. Please be seated.

  12. I'd like to, just sort of as a way of beginning, if you're a guest here, you don't know this,

  13. or maybe if you've been away for a few Sundays.

  14. But this past, last two Sundays, I asked people in the congregation to pray for me.

  15. I like to pray for me all the time, actually.

  16. But on Wednesday, I was the guest speaker at church on Wednesday.

  17. So we're at the University of Ottawa, right in the University Center in a public open spot.

  18. And I ask that you would pray for me because I had to be in the University of Ottawa and

  19. pray on the text, wives, submit to your husbands and slaves, obey your masters, which, as we

  20. all know, is not even remotely controversial in the church or in the University of Ottawa

  21. campus.

  22. And I mean, you know, in heaven, we'll find out what the true fruit of such times are.

  23. But I really want to thank you for your prayers.

  24. God was very kind.

  25. And he was very kind.

  26. There were somewhere between 90 to 100 people who were there throughout all of it, plus different

  27. people wandering by.

  28. And one of the things is, and this comes from your prayers, I was not only, I think, able

  29. to try to bring open the text to people, but to also share the gospel through it, which

  30. sounds counterintuitive to a lot of people that you could take a text like that and use

  31. it to talk about the wonder of Jesus and who he is and what he did for us on the cross.

  32. But I made an attempt to do that, at least, and people were quiet and attentive.

  33. One of the things that they do at church on Wednesday is after the talk is over, the sermon

  34. is over, they, I think they sing a song, they announce that people can ask questions of the

  35. speaker.

  36. And they sing a song, and then we get to, they ask questions.

  37. And I have to answer the questions.

  38. And I think the very, very first question was, why should we trust the authority, why should

  39. we trust or believe the authority of the Bible?

  40. Why should we trust or believe the authority of the Bible?

  41. And I responded, oh, that's easy.

  42. And then I proceeded to give a very brief response.

  43. How I answered that question, that it's easy, and how it is that we would trust the authority

  44. of the Bible and why we should believe it.

  45. Actually, it's not fully explained here, but in the text that we're about to look at, it

  46. will come out as to why it is that Christians should, why not only Christians, but others

  47. can trust the Bible and should believe that it's an authority.

  48. So it'd be a great help to me as we look at this text.

  49. And it's funny, this text is actually talking about something else, but it also helps us to

  50. understand why it is that we can trust the Bible and it as an authority.

  51. So the text is Romans chapter 9, verse 30.

    Romans 9:30

  52. Romans 9, 30.

  53. And if you're one of the people here who's taken one of our free Bibles, it's page 653.

  54. Romans 9, 30.

  55. And this is how it begins.

  56. Romans 9, 30.

  57. And those of you who are listening to Nora speak, if you're not sort of a real keen student

  58. of the Bible, some of it sounds a little bit confusing.

  59. And I'm just going to sort of read a bit.

  60. I'll make a couple of comments as we go, and it starts to get into sort of the big question

  61. or issue today.

  62. And you'll notice, by the way, that one of the things that the Bible is about to do is

  63. to disagree with 95% of Canadians.

  64. In fact, it's going to very specifically reject what 95% of Canadians believe, and which we

  65. Christians, because we breathe Canadian air, are always tempted to want to believe as well.

  66. Here's how it goes.

  67. Romans 9, 30.

  68. What shall we say then?

  69. The Gentiles, here I'm going to use the word pagans, and it's a good word, and it refers

  70. to basically everybody who's not Jewish at the time that this was written, that pagans

  71. who did not pursue righteousness have attained it.

  72. That is, a righteousness that is by faith.

  73. Now, I'm going to pause here, because those of you who are following along, I'm going to

  74. start doing something a little...

  75. I'm not cheating, and I'm not trying to get away from the Bible, but I'm trying to bring

  76. out something that's been established, if you've been here for previous weeks, about

  77. the meaning of these words.

  78. It's not saying that pagans don't try to be good people, and then all of a sudden something's

  79. happened, and now they're good.

  80. It's not trying to say that at all.

  81. And it's also very interesting, if you look at your Bibles, it doesn't say that the Gentiles

  82. are the pagans, because it's not going to say that everybody who's pagan, this has happened.

  83. It's just going to say that for some people, this has happened, who are pagans.

  84. And for the word righteousness here, I'm going to replace it by what it actually means more

  85. literally, which is become or made right with God.

  86. And I haven't talked about being made right with God for a while, but if all of a sudden

  87. you just get this idea of making something right, every time I've talked about it, it's

  88. shocked me how often in movies and in books this concept of making something right is

  89. there.

  90. You know, it could be something if you work at a Starbucks or something or a restaurant,

  91. and you can hear that there's a kerfuffle going on outside, and there's somebody who's

  92. unhappy or a couple of customers who are unhappy.

  93. What you're hoping for if you're the poor person at the cash is that the manager will

  94. come and make it right.

  95. Okay, they'll make it right.

  96. And maybe they'll make it right by firing the customer, getting the customer out of there,

  97. calling the police.

  98. Maybe they'll make it right by giving them a free drink and just, you know, talking and

  99. listening to people.

  100. But you want somebody to make it right.

  101. You know, maybe you've been in a workplace, and there's lots of unhappiness going on.

  102. There's lots of slander and backbiting and discontent.

  103. And people are hoping maybe that at some point in time, the management or higher up in the

  104. organization will come and make it right.

  105. Okay, they'll come and make it right.

  106. And you know, whether that making right is maybe firing somebody or, you know, a lateral

  107. transfer or listening or whatever, it can involve a whole pile of things.

  108. But we have this sort of basic understanding still in our culture of having something made

  109. right.

  110. Okay, and that's what's trying to get communicated here with this word righteousness in this particular

  111. context as a range of meaning.

  112. But that's what it means.

  113. So now I'm going to keep reading.

  114. And I'm going to say that rather than righteousness.

  115. So we're not confused.

  116. Okay, so we'll start again.

  117. What shall we say then?

  118. Verse 30 of chapter 9, that pagans who did not pursue being made right with God have attained

  119. it.

  120. That is, being made right with God that is by faith.

  121. But that Israel, who pursued a law that would lead to being made right with God, did not

  122. succeed in reaching that law.

  123. In other words, they followed a principle and they didn't actually do what they wanted

  124. to accomplish.

  125. Why?

  126. Because they did not pursue it by faith.

  127. I'm going to explain this all in a moment.

  128. But as it were, as if it were based on works.

  129. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone, as it is written, I am laying in Zion a stone

  130. of stumbling and a rock of offense.

  131. And whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.

  132. Now just sort of pause here for a second.

  133. I don't know how many of you watch The Amazing Race.

  134. It's one of my guilty pleasures.

  135. It's, I think, about the only thing I watch on sort of normal network TV.

  136. And it's, I think it's always 11 teams and they go around the world and they have to

  137. complete a series of tasks in foreign cities and follow, you know, they get a direction.

  138. They have to go somewhere and complete a task.

  139. And one of the things which every year, it always happens several times, that the people

  140. are trying to figure out what something means.

  141. And they have it very, very firmly stuck in their mind that they know exactly what they're

  142. being told to do and exactly what it is that they have to see.

  143. And you as a viewer delight in the fact that the camera person will show them constantly

  144. walking by the actual thing they're supposed to find.

  145. And it's very interesting.

  146. Sometimes, I remember this one time, there were these two young men and their self-talk

  147. was about how spectacular they were and how good they were at, they won everything they

  148. always did.

  149. And that was their sort of their self-talk as they were building each other up.

  150. But like complete doofuses, they spent a long time walking right by the thing that they

  151. were supposed to do and the sign that they were supposed to see.

  152. And they were so, in a sense, caught up with how excellent they were and how successful

  153. they were that they couldn't find it.

  154. And it was one of those things of the viewer, in a sense, laughing at them.

  155. Now, Paul, we're going to see here in a moment, says that this just breaks his heart.

  156. But he's talking about that for the Jewish people, that God has provided with them laws.

  157. And that the law, that not only refers to just the books of the first five books of the Old Testament,

  158. but in a sense, the whole Old Testament.

  159. But what's happened, he said, to his brothers and sisters who are Jewish,

  160. is they've gotten in their own head and in their own mind how it is that they're going to sort everything out

  161. by their standards and their criteria.

  162. And the irony is that while they're trying to do that, they literally keep tripping over Jesus,

  163. so to speak.

  164. That they don't recognize that the entire, what we call the Old Testament,

  165. that the entire Old Testament was doing several types of things.

  166. One of them is that it was trying to get people to understand that they couldn't keep it.

  167. That at some point in time, they had to just lay down, in a sense, their Bibles,

  168. lay down their sword and seal, lay down their prayer mats, lay down everything,

  169. and just say, only God.

  170. Only God.

  171. Unless God does something, I'm in big trouble.

  172. And at the same time, what we call the Old Testament was to try to bring people to this

  173. recognition and this realization that unless God does it, we're really in trouble.

  174. At the same time, the entire Old Testament is setting all these clues and hints and riddles

  175. to point to how God is, in fact, going to do this.

  176. That God didn't write the Old Testament as some type of, like, it's not like Kafka's book,

  177. the trial, and some type of evil genius back behind the veil, creating all of these rules,

  178. just trying to see people trying to keep them, and all of them always just fail,

  179. and he's just up there laughing at us and scorn.

  180. No, no, no, no, no, no, no.

  181. That, in fact, in the entire Old Testament, it's constantly giving us hints and riddles,

  182. and that when Jesus comes, that if people had actually come to the point of looking at the Old Testament

  183. and looking at the fact that why is it that I keep having to kill all these animals,

  184. and I just keep messing up, and only God, unless God deals with it,

  185. unless God, in a sense, provides that sacrifice, unless God is the one who sorts these things out,

  186. I'm in big trouble, and then God actually does send the answer to all of these pointers.

  187. But they're so intent on actually trying to accomplish their understanding

  188. because they're so superior and they're so excellent,

  189. and they keep, in a sense, tripping over Jesus.

  190. That's what Paul is trying to communicate.

  191. And then he continues in chapter 10, verse 1.

  192. Brothers and sisters, my heart's desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved.

  193. Now, this is really, really, really important.

  194. You know, one of the views that non-Christians have of Christians is that we don't really care about people.

  195. We think we're better than them.

  196. And a lot of times, non-Christians, they're not being mean and prejudiced when they think that.

  197. Because, in fact, this text is going to continually try to humble us

  198. because the fact of the matter is that a lot of us view,

  199. those of us who are Christians, a lot of us view a lot of the city as a threat.

  200. That a lot of us view people who are same-sex attracted or trans

  201. and living, from our point of view, a life that's not of God.

  202. And rather than our heart being broken for them and loving them,

  203. we find them as a threat.

  204. Or we think of them as our enemies.

  205. And we do that with politics as well.

  206. And we as Christians, and I don't know, you know, I'm not going to pick,

  207. you know, but those of us who, you know, really love Trudeau.

  208. And we view those who like, who supported Harper as a threat.

  209. Those who wanted to vote conservative.

  210. And they view people who vote for Trudeau as a threat, as bad people, as evil people.

  211. And it goes on and on and on.

  212. Our hearts can actually be very, very, very hard to people.

  213. And we like those people who are sort of like us and sort of think our way,

  214. but we're hard-hearted towards other people.

  215. And non-Christians, if they have that perception of Christians, it's not prejudice.

  216. I mean, sometimes maybe it is, and sometimes maybe it's not really fair.

  217. But the fact of the matter is that our hearts are not often broken for our neighbors.

  218. And that we have a real love for them.

  219. And that we want to view that there's nobody in our neighborhood who's our enemy.

  220. And nobody in this city who is our enemy.

  221. There might be people who don't like us, but we don't want,

  222. I don't want to view them as my enemy.

  223. My heart wants to be like Paul's here in verse 1.

  224. We'll read it again in 10.1.

  225. Brothers and sisters, my heart's desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved.

  226. I mean, for many of us, that's the point right now that we have to pause and do some work with God.

  227. To recognize how many people, we don't think that at all.

  228. We'd like to see that person crushed.

  229. Those people who voted for Harper, I'd like to see them crushed.

  230. Those people who voted for Trudeau, I'm just waiting for everything to fall apart.

  231. So that I can just say, look, that's what's going on in our hearts.

  232. Not that our hearts burn with love for them.

  233. Then Paul continues.

  234. And here's now where he's going to be actually quite un-Canadian.

  235. We'll read verse 2, 3, and 4.

  236. But for I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God,

  237. but not according to knowledge.

  238. For being ignorant of the righteousness of God,

  239. in other words, the way that God has provided to make us right with himself,

  240. and seeking to establish their own way of making themselves right with God,

  241. they did not submit to God's way of making people right with himself.

  242. In other words, the way that God was actually going to accomplish it.

  243. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

  244. And I'm not going to talk much about this,

  245. but that's something, a constant part of the teaching.

  246. It's what Jesus says himself in Luke 24 after his resurrection,

  247. that every single thing in the Old, what we call the Old Testament,

  248. every single thing in the Bible points to him.

  249. Everything points to him and who he is and what he's accomplished on the cross.

  250. Everything.

  251. Everything.

  252. Everything in there is moving to its goal,

  253. and in a sense, after Jesus,

  254. we just keep funneling us back to him.

  255. We're going to talk more about that in a moment.

  256. But here, I just want to pause.

  257. Do you notice that un-Canadian thing in verse 2?

  258. Where he says, I have to turn the page,

  259. for being ignorant of the, no, for I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God,

  260. but not according to knowledge.

  261. In other words, they have,

  262. they are deeply committed,

  263. authentically committed,

  264. and sincere.

  265. But they're all wrong.

  266. Now, if you could put the first point up, Andrew,

  267. what is it that most Canadians say?

  268. It does not matter what you believe as long as you're sincere.

  269. And I've added something else.

  270. It only applies to things that are not real and do not matter.

  271. Now, I don't want to offend you if you're here.

  272. I don't mean to offend you.

  273. I just want to consider this is, you know,

  274. is the Bible being judgmental and mean?

  275. Or is it just trying to point out something,

  276. which in fact, we realize,

  277. but we don't want to express it this way.

  278. That it does not matter what you believe as long as you're sincere.

  279. Sincere only applies to things that are real and do not matter.

  280. So, for instance,

  281. just to give a very, very, you know, absurd example,

  282. you're flying in a jet, an Air Canada jet.

  283. You're flying somewhere, it doesn't matter.

  284. I don't know, it has 150 people on it.

  285. And it's at 33,000 feet.

  286. And all of a sudden, over the intercom,

  287. it's announced that the pilot says that

  288. that Joe has a deep and sincere commitment

  289. that he believes he can fly a plane and land it.

  290. And he's never had any lessons,

  291. never flown a plane before,

  292. but he's talked to his inner self.

  293. And both his inner self and him

  294. have really firmly convinced him

  295. that he knows how to fly jets and land them.

  296. And so because the Air Canada pilot is a Canadian,

  297. he wants to respect sincerely held beliefs.

  298. And he's going to come and sit in the plane

  299. while Joe flies the plane without instruments

  300. and lands it.

  301. Now, of course, we would all laugh

  302. and we would all think it was hilarious,

  303. but if we actually came to think that that was happening,

  304. we would all be storming the cockpit.

  305. Because planes are real,

  306. and when they're at 33,000 feet,

  307. landing them matters.

  308. Okay?

  309. So it is, you see,

  310. so for many people when they say

  311. it doesn't matter what you believe

  312. as long as you're sincere,

  313. well, you know what they mean is,

  314. you know,

  315. I keep picking on,

  316. I keep saying,

  317. I'll just use it.

  318. You know, it doesn't really matter that much.

  319. You know,

  320. if somebody just wants to go off

  321. and dance in a little circle at night

  322. out in the bush

  323. and call down the goddesses

  324. and call down the moon

  325. and get in touch with animal spirits,

  326. if they want to do that,

  327. that's completely fine.

  328. Okay?

  329. And if somebody believes,

  330. it really gives them good meaning

  331. to think that,

  332. I don't know,

  333. you know,

  334. that the entire earth

  335. rests on a turtle's back

  336. and everything was created by,

  337. you know,

  338. when ravens talked

  339. and then some seeds

  340. fell out of their mouth

  341. and it fell out,

  342. and that's,

  343. you know,

  344. that's fine.

  345. But if all of a sudden

  346. they actually wanted to change

  347. how biology and chemistry

  348. and physics is taught

  349. and you actually realize

  350. that they actually think

  351. that this is true,

  352. then you'd start to really think

  353. that they were actually psychotic.

  354. But even then,

  355. you'd still maybe just want

  356. to lock them up

  357. because it doesn't matter

  358. as much as landing a plane.

  359. And here's the part

  360. which is hard for Canadians

  361. to understand.

  362. It's why Christians keep getting

  363. in trouble in public.

  364. That for Christians,

  365. we believe it's real.

  366. At least I do.

  367. If you're here as a guest,

  368. earlier on when I began my sermon,

  369. when I closed my eyes and prayed,

  370. I quite literally believe

  371. there is a God that does exist

  372. that I am speaking to.

  373. It doesn't matter

  374. if nobody here believes it,

  375. that's actually what I believe.

  376. And when I ask the Father

  377. to pour out His Holy Spirit,

  378. I literally,

  379. I mean,

  380. I don't know what images I have,

  381. I don't really have any images,

  382. but I literally believe

  383. that I'm asking God

  384. who really does exist

  385. to really do something.

  386. And when I say

  387. that Jesus rose from the dead,

  388. I believe there was

  389. a real historical person

  390. that He really did rise from the dead.

  391. When I,

  392. earlier on in the service,

  393. when I said,

  394. God,

  395. you created all things,

  396. sustain all things,

  397. there's not a square inch

  398. that you don't sustain yourself,

  399. I actually literally believe that.

  400. And if it brings me

  401. into conflict

  402. with the biology faculty,

  403. then that on one hand

  404. is a bit of a daunting

  405. type of thing

  406. to take on,

  407. you know,

  408. 40 PhDs,

  409. but at the end of the day,

  410. I would say,

  411. I believe that this is true

  412. and real

  413. and it matters

  414. that when in John chapter 1,

    John 1 chapter mention

  415. it says,

  416. in the beginning was the Word

  417. and the Word was with God

  418. and the Word was God,

  419. He was with God

  420. in the beginning.

  421. All things were made through Him

  422. and without Him

  423. nothing was made

  424. that was made.

  425. I believe that's literally true.

  426. I believe it's just as true

  427. as being on an airplane

  428. at 33,000 feet

  429. that has to land.

  430. That's the Christian claim.

  431. And so you see,

  432. at first,

  433. when this looks like

  434. it's being very un-Canadian

  435. by saying that it doesn't,

  436. you know,

  437. that being sincere

  438. in fact isn't enough

  439. and it sounds very un-Canadian

  440. as if we're being rude.

  441. Now,

  442. on one hand,

  443. for many Canadians

  444. that we go,

  445. good grief,

  446. you don't accept

  447. naturalistic evolution?

  448. Like,

  449. like,

  450. good grief,

  451. you actually believe

  452. that, like,

  453. there's demons

  454. and angels?

  455. Like,

  456. you,

  457. okay,

  458. but it changes

  459. the conversation,

  460. right?

  461. And that's what

  462. the real,

  463. robust,

  464. historic,

  465. biblical Christianity

  466. is claiming.

  467. We're saying

  468. that we're not like

  469. people who just

  470. go and call down

  471. the dark moon

  472. and have beliefs

  473. about,

  474. you know,

  475. chanting to the great,

  476. that we're,

  477. we're more,

  478. in a sense,

  479. like the chemistry faculty

  480. and the biology faculty.

  481. We're making

  482. those type of claims.

  483. believers.

  484. And now,

  485. what Paul is going

  486. to do,

  487. now that we sort

  488. of grasp the problem,

  489. I'm going to have,

  490. I might have trouble,

  491. anyway,

  492. now that we've sort

  493. of grasped the problem,

  494. the Bible is going

  495. to tell us now

  496. three surprising,

  497. counterintuitive truths.

  498. In fact,

  499. if you could put it up,

  500. the point,

  501. three counterintuitive

  502. truths are taught

  503. by the Bible

  504. in very,

  505. very quick,

  506. summary fashion

  507. in the next three verses.

  508. The first

  509. counterintuitive,

  510. counterintuitive truth,

  511. that's a bit of a tongue

  512. twister for me,

  513. counterintuitive truth

  514. is that all attempts

  515. to be right with God

  516. by rule keeping fail.

  517. This is a great shock

  518. to non-Christians.

  519. It's actually a great shock

  520. to people who have

  521. gone to church

  522. for many,

  523. many years.

  524. Because,

  525. in fact,

  526. many Christians

  527. believe that

  528. rule keeping

  529. is what Christianity

  530. is all about.

  531. But the Bible

  532. is going to,

  533. in fact,

  534. completely reject this.

  535. And the Bible

  536. is going to say

  537. that all attempts

  538. to ascend to God

  539. ascend to God

  540. to know him fail.

  541. I'm going to explain

  542. what that means

  543. in a moment.

  544. And the Bible

  545. is going to say

  546. that all attempts

  547. to descend to God

  548. to know him fail.

  549. And it does it

  550. very,

  551. very briefly.

  552. And it's in

  553. verses 5 to 7.

  554. In a sense here,

  555. there's a basic

  556. rejection

  557. rejection

  558. of all of the

  559. philosophies,

  560. spiritualities,

  561. and religions

  562. of the world.

  563. A basic rejection.

  564. Not because

  565. we think

  566. we're smarter.

  567. In fact,

  568. as I'm going to try

  569. to show,

  570. the heart of the

  571. Spurgeon

  572. got it completely

  573. right.

  574. These rejections

  575. are going to

  576. humble us

  577. and bring us

  578. to our knees

  579. and make us

  580. realize

  581. that every

  582. Christian

  583. is merely

  584. one beggar

  585. telling another

  586. beggar

  587. where to get

  588. free bread.

  589. It's going to

  590. be a complete

  591. and utter

  592. rejection

  593. of our

  594. deep-seated

  595. desire

  596. to be a

  597. superhero

  598. and tell us

  599. that we're

  600. beggars.

  601. That's the

  602. deepest,

  603. hardest part

  604. of Christianity

  605. that it

  606. constantly

  607. humbles us

  608. to bring us

  609. to our knees,

  610. to have us

  611. fall flat

  612. on our face,

  613. to acknowledge

  614. that we are

  615. beggars.

  616. Here it is.

  617. I'll read them

  618. first and then

  619. we'll go back

  620. and look at each

  621. very briefly.

  622. Verse 5,

  623. For Moses writes

  624. about the

  625. righteousness

  626. or the way

  627. of being right

  628. with God

  629. that is based

  630. on the law

  631. that the person

  632. who does the

  633. commandment

  634. shall live by them.

  635. And some of you

  636. are saying,

  637. George,

  638. that contradicts

  639. what you just

  640. said,

  641. but we're going

  642. to go back

  643. and look at it

  644. and I'll show

  645. you why that's

  646. not the case.

  647. Verse 6,

  648. But the righteousness

  649. based on faith,

  650. the way of being

  651. right with God

  652. based on faith,

  653. says,

  654. Do not say in your

  655. heart,

  656. who will ascend

  657. into heaven?

  658. That is to bring

  659. Christ down.

  660. Or,

  661. who will descend

  662. into the abyss?

  663. That is to bring

  664. Christ up

  665. from the dead.

  666. So,

  667. the three things,

  668. the three counterintuitive

  669. truths taught

  670. by the Bible,

  671. first,

  672. all attempts

  673. to be right

  674. with God

  675. by rule keeping

  676. fail.

  677. And verse 5,

  678. that's where it

  679. says it,

  680. and it looks at first

  681. as if it's saying

  682. the opposite.

  683. For Moses writes

  684. about the righteousness,

  685. the way of being

  686. right with God

  687. that is based

  688. on the law,

  689. that the person

  690. who does the commandment

  691. shall live by them.

  692. What Paul is doing here,

  693. and it's a little bit hard

  694. if you haven't been

  695. to any of the services,

  696. you haven't heard

  697. any of the sermons,

  698. you haven't read

  699. any of Romans,

  700. but if you have a Bible

  701. like this,

  702. it's sort of very obvious

  703. that Romans starts

  704. over here,

  705. and Romans has done,

  706. he's talked about this,

  707. he's talked about this,

  708. he's talked about this,

  709. he's talked about this,

  710. he's talked about this,

  711. now he gets to this.

  712. Sometimes I come home

  713. late at night,

  714. and my wife and kids

  715. are watching something

  716. on Netflix,

  717. and maybe they're

  718. two-thirds of the way

  719. through it,

  720. and I just come,

  721. I sit down

  722. or do whatever,

  723. and I come and watch

  724. the movie,

  725. and something said

  726. on the TV

  727. that to me

  728. sounds completely innocuous,

  729. and people,

  730. the others,

  731. chuckle or groan.

  732. You know,

  733. and I think,

  734. wow,

  735. they chuckle or groan,

  736. it just sounds innocuous

  737. to me.

  738. And that's because

  739. in the previous thing

  740. leading up to it,

  741. what they just say

  742. has a context

  743. that makes you

  744. chuckle or groan.

  745. And so what Paul

  746. is doing here,

  747. this is now

  748. in chapter 10,

  749. and if you go through

  750. the book of Romans,

  751. one of the main things

  752. that Paul does

  753. in the book of Romans,

  754. he does it in the last

  755. half of chapter 1,

  756. all of chapter 2,

  757. and most of chapter 3,

  758. is he wants to try

  759. to bring you to the point

  760. of understanding

  761. that if your goal

  762. in life is to keep rules,

  763. and keeping rules

  764. is what's going to

  765. make you right with God,

  766. that you always fail.

  767. You always fail,

  768. everybody fails,

  769. with no exception,

  770. if they're completely

  771. and utterly honest.

  772. And Paul tries to show

  773. that whether you follow

  774. the perfect,

  775. like God's rules,

  776. ones that he wrote

  777. that are in the Bible,

  778. or whether God

  779. will be completely

  780. and utterly just,

  781. and say,

  782. okay, George,

  783. you make your rules.

  784. Okay, George,

  785. you write down the things

  786. that you have to accomplish,

  787. and you write them down,

  788. I'll let you choose.

  789. You write them all down,

  790. and then we'll just

  791. have a video cam

  792. that follows your life,

  793. and we'll just spend

  794. the next month

  795. and seeing how long

  796. it takes before

  797. you can't even keep

  798. the rules that you pick,

  799. that you make for yourself.

  800. And that God is

  801. completely and utterly fair.

  802. And so Paul is just using here

  803. a very, very simple type

  804. of a catchphrase

  805. to remind us of the thing

  806. that he's been saying

  807. over and over and over again

  808. in many, many, many

  809. different forms

  810. throughout the entire

  811. book of Romans

  812. up to this point.

  813. And for many, many,

  814. many, many, many Christians,

  815. they believe that the Christian faith

  816. is all about keeping rules.

  817. Or, for you and I,

  818. we say, oh yeah,

  819. okay, no, no, no, no, no,

  820. I have to get down

  821. on my knees,

  822. I make the sinner's prayer,

  823. I give my life to God.

  824. But then, it's almost

  825. as soon as that's over,

  826. before we know it,

  827. how we evaluate

  828. how we are with God

  829. comes with how good we are

  830. at keeping our standards

  831. and our moral rules.

  832. And how we end up

  833. coming to church

  834. feeling deeply depressed

  835. because, in fact,

  836. this past week

  837. we haven't been very good

  838. at keeping our rules,

  839. and we somehow or another

  840. believe that how we are

  841. with God depends upon

  842. our ability

  843. to keep rules.

  844. But it never does.

  845. It never does.

  846. In fact,

  847. I'm going to share something.

  848. If you're a non-Christian

  849. and you are here today,

  850. one of the things,

  851. I'm going to tell you something

  852. about your Christian friends

  853. that maybe they don't even

  854. know about themselves

  855. or if they know it,

  856. they don't want to share with you,

  857. is that we Christians

  858. sometimes are deeply

  859. intimidated by people

  860. who are very successful

  861. at keeping rules.

  862. That we look at,

  863. you know,

  864. maybe we look at

  865. some Jewish person,

  866. or we look at a Hindu,

  867. or we look at a Buddhist,

  868. or we just look at our neighbor

  869. who's really good

  870. at keeping financial rules,

  871. or another person

  872. who's really good

  873. at just keeping the rules

  874. about how you make promotions,

  875. or how you have

  876. the perfect house,

  877. or how you have

  878. the perfect wife,

  879. or how you have

  880. the perfect kid,

  881. the perfect dog,

  882. all together,

  883. none of the above,

  884. whatever it is.

  885. And we Christians

  886. can be deeply,

  887. deeply,

  888. deeply intimidated

  889. by perfect rule keeping

  890. and feel we have

  891. nothing to say.

  892. See,

  893. this text wants

  894. to humble us.

  895. What should we say?

  896. I'm a beggar.

  897. I'm George.

  898. I'm completely helpless.

  899. I couldn't keep

  900. all those laws

  901. if my life depended upon it.

  902. In fact,

  903. the matter is,

  904. is if you saw

  905. how I ate,

  906. you'd know

  907. that I'm shortening

  908. my life by how bad

  909. I am at keeping rules.

  910. We'd want to say,

  911. you know what,

  912. there's the good news

  913. that being right with God

  914. is never going to be

  915. based on keeping rules.

  916. Never.

  917. And then,

  918. we'll go and look,

  919. and in fact,

  920. here's another thing,

  921. is basically,

  922. all religion and spirituality

  923. is advice about

  924. the rules to keep.

  925. All religion

  926. and all spirituality

  927. is advice about

  928. the rules to keep

  929. and follow.

  930. And the Bible here

  931. is saying,

  932. you follow them

  933. thinking you're going to live.

  934. Nobody will live

  935. because nobody keeps them.

  936. Then verse 6,

  937. but the way of being right

  938. with God

  939. based on faith

  940. says,

  941. it's a rejection.

  942. Do not say in your heart

  943. who will ascend

  944. into heaven.

  945. Now this is a,

  946. that is,

  947. who will ascend

  948. into heaven,

  949. that is to bring Christ down.

  950. And here,

  951. what the Bible

  952. is telling us

  953. is that

  954. all ways of ascending

  955. to know God,

  956. they all fail.

  957. Don't try to follow them.

  958. And there's,

  959. there's historically,

  960. there's been all sorts

  961. of different ways

  962. to ascend to God.

  963. The most common one

  964. is to have a mystical experience.

  965. And by having a mystical experience,

  966. we ascend to God.

  967. And people who have

  968. mystical experiences

  969. and ascend to God,

  970. they're superior

  971. to other people.

  972. Or intellectuals

  973. who are able to,

  974. to think through

  975. great things

  976. and make great distinctions.

  977. And their minds

  978. become a series

  979. of ever higher abstractions

  980. and ever higher distinctions.

  981. And they're just

  982. unbelievably brilliant.

  983. And maybe it's a matter

  984. that there's going to be

  985. these profound

  986. ascetic disciplines

  987. that just,

  988. that their spirituality,

  989. their mantras,

  990. their chanting,

  991. their yoga,

  992. that that is going to be

  993. a type of a way

  994. of ascending

  995. and ascending

  996. and ascending

  997. until we can actually

  998. reach and grasp God.

  999. And for others,

  1000. it's going to be

  1001. through aesthetic experiences.

  1002. The ability to appreciate

  1003. unbelievably great music

1004. and get all of the nuances

  1005. out of that music.

1006. And as the aesthetic experience

  1007. of the music

  1008. or the art

  1009. or the poetry

  1010. or the sculpture,

1011. as it fills our minds

  1012. and our minds move

  1013. to higher things

  1014. and to higher things

  1015. and to higher things

1016. so that we can grasp God.

  1017. And the Bible says

  1018. none of it works.

  1019. None of it works.

  1020. If you're a non-Christian

  1021. and you were here,

1022. I want to share with you

  1023. another thing

  1024. about your Christian friend

  1025. that you don't realize,

  1026. we Christians

  1027. are profoundly,

  1028. profoundly uncomfortable

  1029. in the face

  1030. of profound assent

  1031. because part of us

1032. wants to be like that ourselves.

1033. We don't want to acknowledge

  1034. that we're beggars.

  1035. We want to think

  1036. we're superheroes too.

1037. And when we come to people

  1038. who have finer distinctions

  1039. in their minds

  1040. and their aesthetic experiences

  1041. and their spiritual experience

  1042. and their mystical things,

  1043. we feel deeply uncomfortable

  1044. because part of us,

  1045. like fallen human beings,

1046. wants to be a superhero

  1047. like that as well.

  1048. But the Bible says

  1049. none of it works.

  1050. One of the things

  1051. that constantly,

1052. the people I talk to

  1053. in Starbucks,

  1054. one of the,

  1055. for many of them,

  1056. they'll bring up things

  1057. about Christopher Hitchens

  1058. and the presumption

1059. of thinking that human beings

1060. can know and capture God.

1061. And they tell me that

1062. thinking that they've got me

  1063. and I say,

  1064. I'm a Christian,

  1065. I completely believe,

  1066. I accept,

  1067. I,

  1068. Christopher Hitchens

  1069. and I like this,

  1070. we're bosom buddies,

1071. we think alike on this one.

  1072. You haven't shocked me.

  1073. I agree with it.

  1074. And they go,

  1075. like they don't know

  1076. what to do next.

1077. They thought they've got me.

  1078. That is presumptuous

1079. to think that any human beings

  1080. can attain and grasp

  1081. by themselves,

  1082. by their minds,

  1083. through their aesthetic experiences,

  1084. the infinite God.

  1085. We accept that.

  1086. The Bible rejects it.

  1087. And then there's

  1088. the way of descent.

  1089. Verse 7,

  1090. where,

  1091. who will descend

  1092. into the abyss?

1093. That is to bring Christ

  1094. up from the dead.

  1095. Now,

1096. we're going to talk about

1097. the second part of it,

1098. but this way of descent,

  1099. once again,

  1100. that's a very,

  1101. very common way.

1102. When I went to do

  1103. my master's in counseling,

  1104. the supposedly Christian place,

  1105. one of the things

1106. that I had to do

  1107. in a class

1108. is I had to go deep

  1109. within myself

  1110. to first of all

  1111. find,

1112. not only go from myself,

1113. but to go to my

  1114. higher self

  1115. and my higher self

  1116. and eventually touch

  1117. the transcendent

  1118. cosmic self.

1119. And it was a journey

  1120. deep within.

  1121. And there's also people

  1122. who go,

  1123. in a sense,

  1124. a way of descent

1125. as they go into the past.

  1126. They'll come and they'll tell us,

  1127. well,

1128. you can just follow your God,

  1129. but the New Testament

  1130. was just written

  1131. 2,000 years ago.

  1132. I follow some scripture

  1133. and some practice

  1134. that goes back

  1135. to 4,000 B.C.

  1136. long before Jesus

  1137. was even the gleam

  1138. in anybody's eyes.

  1139. This,

  1140. which is old

  1141. and far more ancient,

  1142. that's the path

  1143. that I follow.

  1144. Your thing

  1145. is just a Johnny

  1146. come lately.

  1147. Or there's a path

  1148. of descent

  1149. into that

  1150. which is purely physical,

  1151. often connected

  1152. with sex

  1153. because in sexual knowing

  1154. there's often something

  1155. which feels transcendent

  1156. and ecstatic about it.

1157. And so as you enter

  1158. into this,

  1159. it feels as if

  1160. you're somehow

  1161. another connecting

  1162. to God.

  1163. That somehow,

  1164. and you think

  1165. of people

  1166. who believe

  1167. that by getting

  1168. themselves

  1169. into some unbelievable

  1170. trance

  1171. or some other

  1172. unbelievable act

  1173. of transgression,

  1174. that they're somehow

  1175. another connecting

  1176. by going down

  1177. and getting to that

  1178. which is base,

  1179. that they are somehow

  1180. connecting with that

  1181. which is real

1182. and that which is God.

  1183. And the Bible said

  1184. none of them works.

  1185. None of them works.

  1186. And non-Christian friends,

  1187. I will tell you,

1188. for many of us Christians,

  1189. we are profoundly

  1190. uncomfortable

1191. in the face of that.

  1192. When somebody tells us

  1193. that their way

  1194. is far more ancient,

1195. often for many of us

  1196. we don't quite know

  1197. what to say

  1198. because we wish

  1199. that we could say

1200. that ours was more ancient.

  1201. And when people talk

  1202. about the experiences

  1203. they have through drugs

  1204. or through meditation

  1205. in their depths

  1206. or through profound experiences

  1207. of sexual knowing,

1208. and for many of us

1209. we don't know what it is

  1210. because we wish

  1211. that we could be

  1212. doing those things

1213. and we can tell you

  1214. of our experiences

  1215. and how our experiences

1216. are just as good as yours

  1217. and even better.

  1218. And once again,

  1219. the Bible is completely

  1220. and utterly humbling us

1221. and we have to just say,

  1222. you know what,

  1223. that doesn't work either,

  1224. I'm a beggar.

  1225. And Canadians,

  1226. like most human beings,

1227. don't like to acknowledge that.

1228. And you were intimidated by it.

1229. Before we go to the next verses,

1230. we might go a little bit

  1231. over time today, folks.

  1232. Hopefully it's all right.

1233. But could you put up

  1234. Romans 1, 16 to 17

1235. for me at this time?

1236. The way the book of Romans

  1237. is written

1238. is that the first few verses

  1239. as Paul describes,

  1240. a little bit of

  1241. just sort of welcome.

  1242. Then he tells them

1243. a little bit about his plans.

1244. And then those of you

  1245. who have heard it,

  1246. I keep saying it

  1247. over and over again.

  1248. It's almost like

  1249. a modern academic paper

  1250. where there's the abstract

  1251. at the beginning

  1252. where the abstract

1253. gives you the basic content

  1254. of the paper.

  1255. And Paul does that

  1256. in verses 1,

  1257. chapter 1,

  1258. verses 16 and 17.

  1259. And then after that,

1260. he goes into the problem,

1261. he goes into how God

  1262. solves the problem,

  1263. he goes into different

  1264. other things.

1265. But everything in the book

  1266. of Romans

  1267. sort of unpacks this

1268. or is revealed by this.

1269. So could you help me

1270. and read this with me,

  1271. please,

  1272. out loud.

1273. for I am not ashamed

  1274. of the gospel,

1275. for it is the power

  1276. of God for salvation

  1277. to everyone who believes,

  1278. to the Jew first

1279. and also to the Greek.

  1280. For in the gospel,

  1281. the righteousness of God

  1282. is revealed from faith

  1283. to faith.

  1284. As it is written,

  1285. the righteous shall live

  1286. by faith.

1287. So what Paul is saying here

  1288. is the gospel

  1289. is something completely

  1290. and utterly different.

  1291. that the gospel

  1292. is something completely

  1293. and utterly different.

  1294. Does rule keeping matter?

  1295. Rule keeping does matter.

1296. But the good news is

  1297. that you and I

  1298. can't keep the rules.

1299. But as Paul has described

  1300. up until now,

  1301. Jesus perfectly keeps

  1302. every rule

  1303. and has a life

  1304. of unbroken union

  1305. with God,

  1306. perfect obedience.

  1307. And that what happens

  1308. on the cross

  1309. is that Jesus

  1310. takes upon himself

  1311. my inability

  1312. to keep the rules

  1313. and the punishment

  1314. I deserve

  1315. and he offers me

  1316. his perfect keeping

  1317. of the rules.

  1318. That's what Jesus does

1319. for me on the cross.

  1320. And what else

  1321. is happening

  1322. on the cross

  1323. is that God knows

  1324. that I,

  1325. by my finite,

  1326. fallen,

  1327. rebellious human mind,

  1328. cannot pierce

  1329. the heights of God.

  1330. That God

  1331. breaks into

  1332. our created order

  1333. in the person

  1334. of his son

  1335. that Jesus

  1336. comes

  1337. to us.

  1338. and that's

  1339. why all

  1340. Christian claims

  1341. of intellectual

  1342. superiority

  1343. have to die

  1344. because we have

  1345. to say that

  1346. none of it

  1347. came from our

  1348. thinking.

  1349. That God

  1350. comes down.

  1351. Jesus

  1352. descends.

  1353. And at the

  1354. same time,

  1355. and so that

  1356. what in a sense

  1357. is happening

  1358. when Jesus

  1359. dies upon the cross

  1360. is we are

  1361. observing

  1362. the coming

  1363. of Jesus

  1364. from the

  1365. Father's side

  1366. and he descends

  1367. to come to

  1368. our created

  1369. order.

  1370. He descends

  1371. to come

  1372. and actually

  1373. be within

  1374. the womb

  1375. of Mary

  1376. and then he

  1377. lives a normal

  1378. human life

  1379. and his

  1380. descent

  1381. continues

  1382. to actually

  1383. dine upon

  1384. the cross

  1385. and his

  1386. death upon

  1387. the cross

  1388. is going

  1389. to mean

  1390. that he's

  1391. going to

  1392. continue

  1393. to descend

  1394. and that

  1395. there is

  1396. no depth

  1397. so low

  1398. that Jesus

  1399. has not

  1400. gone lower,

  1401. that there

  1402. is no

  1403. type of

  1404. evil

  1405. that we

  1406. have done

  1407. or that we

  1408. know about

  1409. that has

  1410. not fallen

  1411. upon the

  1412. shoulders

  1413. of Jesus

  1414. that on

  1415. the cross

  1416. all of

  1417. the

  1418. that God

  1419. in his

  1420. descent

  1421. he comes

  1422. to us

  1423. he takes

  1424. upon himself

  1425. all that

  1426. keeps us

  1427. from God

  1428. all of

  1429. the evil

  1430. is going

  1431. to come

  1432. upon him

  1433. he continues

  1434. to descend

  1435. until he's

  1436. descended

  1437. and tasted

  1438. everything

  1439. there is

  1440. to taste

  1441. of death

  1442. everything

  1443. there is

  1444. to taste

  1445. of evil

  1446. everything

  1447. there is

  1448. to taste

  1449. of shame

  1450. everything

  1451. there is

  1452. to taste

  1453. about

  1454. separation

  1455. from God

  1456. that he

  1457. goes

  1458. lower

  1459. than anything

  1460. can possibly

  1461. be

  1462. to the very

  1463. very depths

  1464. and then

  1465. on the third

  1466. day

  1467. God

  1468. raises him

  1469. from the

  1470. dead

  1471. and he ascends

  1472. back into

  1473. heaven

  1474. that Jesus

  1475. is teaching

  1476. is teaching

  1477. that comes

  1478. from God

  1479. that his

  1480. death upon

  1481. the cross

  1482. is a

  1483. bearing of

  1484. our evil

  1485. and the

  1486. consequences

  1487. of our

  1488. evil

  1489. upon

  1490. himself

  1491. Jesus

  1492. comes

  1493. from above

  1494. descends

  1495. to the

  1496. depths

  1497. comes

  1498. back up

  1499. and as I'm

  1500. going to say

  1501. in a moment

  1502. if we just

  1503. put our

  1504. hands

  1505. in his

  1506. he is

  1507. the one

  1508. who takes

  1509. us to

  1510. God

  1511. that's what

  1512. the gospel

  1513. is

  1514. it's the

  1515. power of

  1516. God

  1517. for salvation

  1518. Andrew

  1519. can you put

  1520. up the

  1521. next point

  1522. the gospel

  1523. is the

  1524. good news

  1525. that by

  1526. the

  1527. resurrection

  1528. God

  1529. has

  1530. vindicated

  1531. who

  1532. Jesus

  1533. is

  1534. and what

  1535. he has

  1536. accomplished

  1537. the gospel

  1538. is the

  1539. good news

  1540. that by

  1541. the

  1542. resurrection

  1543. God

  1544. has

  1545. vindicated

  1546. who

  1547. Jesus

  1548. is

  1549. and what

  1550. he

  1551. has

  1552. accomplished

  1553. why

  1554. trust

  1555. the

  1556. Bible

  1557. it's

  1558. a coming

  1559. together

  1560. of

  1561. several

  1562. things

  1563. the

  1564. first

  1565. thing

  1566. it's

  1567. coming

  1568. together

  1569. about

  1570. is

  1571. that

  1572. the

  1573. resurrection

  1574. is

  1575. real

  1576. and it

  1577. matters

  1578. if you

  1579. study

  1580. history

1581. if you study the historical records, if you study what went on,

1582. I believe that if you study it with even a remotely open mind,

1583. you will come to the conclusion that Jesus really existed, that he really died,

1584. and that the only way to account for what happens on the third day

1585. is that God raised him from the dead.

1586. And that this is not just some isolated type of thing.

1587. It wouldn't be as if all of a sudden Joey died,

1588. and then three days later he came back to life.

1589. That would just be weird.

1590. Nothing personal, Joey, but it would just be weird.

1591. Okay, it could be, ah, that would just be weird, okay?

1592. But that Jesus dies and rises,

1593. and he talked about the fact that he was going to do that.

1594. He talked about the meaning and the significance of his life.

1595. He talked about who he was.

1596. So that the resurrection of Jesus is not just, that's weird,

1597. but it vindicates who he said he was

1598. and what he said he's going to accomplish on the cross,

1599. which is this taking away of our rebellion

1600. and the stowing upon us a righteousness of God.

1601. And that all of this takes place within a rich system of thought found in the Bible,

  1602. a rich system of thought, a meta-narrative,

1603. and wisdom within the Bible that makes sense of, well,

1604. of abstract philosophy and of spirituality.

1605. And on Wednesday I tried to show it,

1606. it makes sense of the difference between human beings, of men and women.

1607. And it makes sense in terms of how bosses and workers make,

1608. and how it makes sense of social structures.

1609. And it takes place within the context of arguments for the existence of God.

1610. And it takes place, this life of Jesus and his death and his resurrection

1611. and the vindication of him, it takes place within a rich thing.

1612. And it's because of that that you can trust the authority of the Bible.

  1613. I urge you, if you're a non-Christian,

1614. pursue to understand the historical record for who Jesus is

1615. and what he accomplished from the cross.

1616. I am not worried about that.

  1617. Search it.

1618. I urge you to look into it for yourself.

1619. I urge you to look into it for yourself.

1620. Just very briefly in closing,

1621. just before we go, the gospel is the good news, right?

  1622. It's not good advice.

  1623. It's not good rules.

1624. It's not good yoga techniques.

1625. It's not good community rules.

  1626. It's not good rituals.

  1627. It's not good institutions.

1628. It's good news that by the resurrection,

1629. God has vindicated who Jesus is and what he's accomplished.

1630. We're just going to read these last verses

1631. because the Bible is going to bring it all home now in a very powerful image.

  1632. Verse 8 to 13.

1633. But what does it say?

1634. What does the Bible say?

  1635. It's rejected rule keeping.

  1636. It's rejected ascending.

  1637. It's rejected descending.

1638. But what does it say?

1639. The word is near you in your mouth and in your heart.

1640. That is the word of faith that we proclaim.

1641. Because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord

1642. and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead,

  1643. you will be saved.

1644. This is not George saying this.

1645. This is God saying this.

  1646. I have no authority.

  1647. I'm a beggar.

  1648. You will be saved.

  1649. Verse 10.

  1650. For with the heart,

1651. and this doesn't mean emotions.

1652. This means the command center of who you are.

1653. It means the very, very underneath your mind,

  1654. underneath your will,

  1655. underneath your emotions,

1656. the very command center of who you are,

1657. the very center of who you are.

1658. For with the heart one believes and is justified,

1659. that is made right with God.

1660. And with the mouth one confesses and is saved.

  1661. For the scripture says,

1662. everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.

1663. For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek.

1664. For the same Lord is Lord of all,

1665. bestowing his riches on all who call on him.

1666. For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

1667. Andrew, could you put up the next point?

1668. Only God can cross the infinite gap of time and space and being

1669. to come to you where you are,

  1670. as you are,

  1671. knowing who you are.

1672. Only God can cross the infinite gap of time,

1673. the infinite gap of space,

1674. the infinite gap of being,

1675. because God is so completely other and different than you and me.

1676. To come to you where you are,

  1677. as you are,

  1678. knowing who you are.

1679. If you could put up the final point, Andrew,

1680. God says to us in verse 9 and 10,

1681. I'm just changing the word slightly to make it,

1682. this is God speaking to you directly and me directly.

1683. If you confess with your mouth,

1684. this is not George speaking,

1685. it's as if God is saying to you and you and you and you.

1686. If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord,

1687. believe in your heart that I raised him from the dead,

1688. I will make you right with me now and forever.

1689. God says to you and you and me,

  1690. you're a beggar.

  1691. Get over yourself.

1692. You're going to spend your entire Christian life getting over yourself.

1693. I'm going to keep having you read my word,

1694. and if you read my word correctly,

1695. it's going to help you get over yourself.

  1696. Get over yourself.

  1697. You're a beggar.

1698. If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord

1699. and believe in your heart that I raised him from the dead,

1700. I will make you right with me now and forever.

1701. You know, if you watch Hollywood movies,

1702. this is the closing image I'm going to ask you to stand.

1703. If you watch Hollywood movies,

1704. a very, very regular thing in Hollywood movies is

  1705. there's a group of noble people,

1706. and they're fighting the evil overlord,

1707. and then very, very close to the end of the movie,

1708. one of the heroes or the hero's best friend.

  1709. Bang, they get shot.

  1710. Bang, they get shot.

  1711. Bang, they get shot.

  1712. And down they go.

1713. And the other team members are all completely inhorrified.

  1714. Not Sally.

  1715. Not Fred.

  1716. Whatever their name is.

1717. And they rush over to the person who's lying there.

1718. And the very, very next thing you see is

1719. you can just tell that the person's dead.

1720. And two of the people,

1721. they're firing their guns at the bad guys,

  1722. keeping them off.

  1723. And there's a third person,

1724. and they're on the radio.

  1725. They're calling in a helicopter support

1726. or spaceship support to come

1727. so there can be a medic to come and help their friend.

1728. But their friend is dead.

  1729. They're not breathing.

1730. And there's another friend on top of them,

1731. and he's pushing on the chest,

1732. and he's doing like this,

1733. and he's doing like this,

  1734. but the person's dead.

1735. And there's another two people,

1736. and they're putting their hands

1737. right where all the bullet holes are

1738. because the blood's coming out

1739. because they want to stop it,

  1740. but the person's dead.

1741. And then there's another person,

1742. and she or he is saying,

1743. don't go away from me.

  1744. Come back to me.

  1745. I love you.

  1746. I'm your friend.

  1747. Come back to me.

  1748. But the person's dead.

1749. They are dead, dead, dead.

1750. And then the camera keeps going back and forth,

1751. and you get into the mind of the person who is dead.

1752. And they're just lying there.

1753. Blood's coming out of their bullet holes

1754. or their ray gun holes.

1755. Somebody else is firing to keep all the dead,

  1756. all the bad guys.

1757. Somebody else is calling for the medic.

1758. Somebody else is doing the CPR.

1759. Somebody else is putting their hands in the bullet hole.

1760. Somebody else is doing all of that.

1761. They're just lying there dead.

1762. And you see in their mind

1763. that they're starting to go away.

1764. And then the person who's calling them back,

1765. or maybe they have an image of their child at home,

1766. or their mom or something,

  1767. their dog.

  1768. I don't know.

  1769. They have this image,

1770. and the image is right there.

  1771. They're not doing anything.

1772. They're just lying there dead.

1773. And they can see this image now in their mind.

  1774. And they come back.

1775. And the next thing you know,

  1776. as they come back,

  1777. because the person,

1778. that has come to them where they are dead.

1779. And the next thing Hollywood shows

  1780. is the eyes open.

  1781. Take a big breath.

1782. And the people with the guns

1783. are shooting even more now,

1784. and then the helicopter comes,

1785. and they take them away,

  1786. and they're all alive.

1787. And then the next thing you know,

1788. they live happily ever after.

1789. That is an image of what Paul is talking about here.

1790. That is an image of what Paul is talking about here.

1791. God crosses the infinite distance.

1792. God is the one through his son

1793. who's fighting off the bad guys.

1794. God is the one doing the CPR.

1795. God is the one in the bullet holes.

1796. God is the one calling to you.

1797. He comes to you when you are dead and helpless.

1798. He provides the power to make you right with him.

1799. He provides the power for you to live.

1800. He does it all through the cross

1801. in the person of Jesus.

1802. And this is what Paul proclaimed,

1803. and this is what I am telling you.

1804. And it is for you today.

1805. If you have not done it,

  1806. there is, don't wait, don't wait.

1807. If you feel the pressure of the Holy Spirit,

  1808. you feel Jesus,

1809. and you know he's been knocking on your door,

1810. there is no better time than now

1811. to with your lips say,

  1812. Jesus is Lord.

1813. You see, raised him from the dead,

1814. you know that Jesus is the one vindicated by God,

1815. that he is in fact the power of God for salvation.

  1816. And Jesus is Lord.

1817. You're acknowledging not only what he's done,

  1818. but who he is,

1819. and what he will be for you for all eternity.

  1820. Please stand.

  1821. Thank you.

1822. You don't have to scream it out or shout it out,

1823. but even if it's just very quietly under your breath,

1824. there's no better time than right now,

1825. maybe for the very first time in your life,

1826. and you know that Jesus has come to you

  1827. to just say,

  1828. Jesus, you are Lord.

  1829. You are my Lord.

1830. You are the one that God has provided

1831. to make me right with you.

  1832. You are Lord.

  1833. You are Lord.

1834. Father, we confess before you

1835. that we love this idea

1836. that we are redeemed by grace

1837. and by what you've done for us

1838. on the cross through Jesus,

  1839. but Father,

1840. you know how quickly we think

  1841. that it depends upon

1842. how good we are at keeping rules.

  1843. Father,

1844. you know how quickly it is

  1845. that we desire

1846. that we'd be a superstar at rule keeping

1847. or a superstar at rule breaking

1848. or a superstar at being brilliant

  1849. and thinking brilliant things

  1850. and having mystical experiences

1851. or how soon we wish

1852. that we can go into the depths of everything.

  1853. Father,

1854. you know how deeply addicted

1855. and divided we are as human beings

1856. even after we've made Jesus as Lord

  1857. to somehow think

1858. that it's all about us being superstars.

  1859. Father,

  1860. you know,

  1861. Father,

1862. we thank you so much

1863. that you know every single thing

1864. there is to know about us

1865. when your son died upon the cross

1866. and still he died on the cross for us.

  1867. Still he loves us.

  1868. Father,

1869. make us disciples of Jesus

1870. who are gripped by the gospel.

  1871. Gripped by the gospel

  1872. that we, Father,

  1873. can humbly say,

  1874. I am a beggar

1875. when it comes to rule keeping.

  1876. I am a beggar

1877. when it comes to being brilliant.

  1878. I am a beggar

1879. when it comes to descending

  1880. into the depths.

  1881. Father,

1882. please pour out your Holy Spirit upon us.

1883. Make us disciples of Jesus

  1884. gripped by the gospel.

  1885. So freed up

  1886. that we can humbly

  1887. with faltering steps

  1888. live for your glory.

1889. And this we ask in Jesus' name.

  1890. Your son

  1891. and our savior

  1892. and God's people said,

  1893. Amen.
