  1. Father, we confess before you that often we aren't honest with you in our prayers.

  2. And Father, we confess that for many of us, when John was reading Romans 11, we were bored.

  3. And we didn't think it was very interesting.

  4. And Father, we confess that to you.

  5. We confess that sometimes that's how your word strikes us.

  6. Father, we ask that your Holy Spirit would gently but deeply and powerfully move in our lives.

  7. Father, help us to get over ourselves.

  8. Help us, Father, to have hearts and minds and wills that are hungry for your word,

  9. that are willing to pursue and just sit and think about your word.

  10. Father, help us.

  11. May your Holy Spirit so move and work within us that we might understand that you are wise,

  12. that you speak what we need to know,

  13. and that most of all, not only most of all, Father, but not only are you wise, but you are good.

  14. And you sent your Son to be our Savior.

  15. Father, draw us to yourself.

  16. And this we ask in Jesus' name, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  17. Please be seated.

  18. So, here's the problem with the Romans 11 text.

  19. There's several problems.

  20. The first problem is that probably a lot of us, maybe, you know, maybe I'm just far more wicked than everybody here,

  21. but, you know, for a lot of us that text seemed to go on and on and on.

  22. Talked about olive trees and shoots and Israel, and you're thinking to yourself, when you think about it at all,

  23. what on earth is going on with this text?

  24. Before I became a Christian, my problem in becoming a Christian wasn't tempted towards atheism or something like that.

  25. Nicky Gumbel expressed it very well.

  26. I found Christianity boring and irrelevant.

  27. And if you're a non-Christian here this morning, you might think Romans 11 is a test case in a text which is boring and irrelevant.

  28. But it actually, it's very, very interesting.

  29. It's a difficult text.

  30. It's a funny text.

  31. And it's a text which doesn't sort of immediately scream out,

  32. immediately scream out to us postmodern Canadians in Ottawa in 2016.

  33. But actually, if you caught two of the big, bolder, elephant-in-the-room questions in the text,

  34. you'd realize that it's actually touching upon something that is very deeply relevant.

  35. I don't know if you heard it.

  36. It was in verse 1 and verse 11.

  37. There's these two big, bolder questions, like a big rock, big elephant-in-the-room question.

  38. The first question is verse 1.

  39. I ask then, has God rejected his people?

  40. Does God reject people?

  41. And then the second one is in verse 11.

  42. So I ask, did they stumble in order that they might fall?

  43. And this is this idea that somehow people stumble.

  44. And the idea of fall is a very, very good word.

  45. In the original language, the idea is that you fall and you keep falling and you keep falling and you keep falling and you keep falling and there's no turnaround.

  46. Like it's a falling that leaves you completely crushed.

  47. Those are actually very profound spiritual questions.

  48. And whether we think about it very much.

  49. You know, I know several people.

  50. In fact, there's probably people here in this congregation.

  51. It might be too painful for you to share it over coffee.

  52. But I know that there are people in this church who haven't spoken to their parents in years.

  53. Parents are still alive.

  54. They have phones, internet, all that.

  55. But they haven't spoken to their parents in years.

  56. I know of several people who've lived in the home with their parents.

  57. And in both the two cases that immediately come to my mind, they were both young women.

  58. And in each case, they would live in the house with their father for years.

  59. And for at least two or three years, not say a single word to their father while living in the same house with them.

  60. And just to make it a little bit even more personal, you might notice that I don't refer to my parents very often.

  61. I, in fact, have only talked to my parents, I think, twice in seven years.

  62. Now, you know, in all of these cases, if you got into it, there's, you know, there's different things.

  63. And maybe in some cases, it's because parents have done profound things of abuse and have been unrepentant.

  64. And it's hard to talk to people who've abused you and been unrepentant.

  65. And for others, maybe it's a type of a hardness and an arrogance in heart.

  66. The parents might not or the other person might not or it's a friend that you've cut off.

  67. And it might be that there's a bit of an arrogance and a hardness in you.

  68. But in fact, it's a very common human experience.

  69. And so the question, whether we're consciously aware of this or not, is, is God like this?

  70. Is God like this?

  71. Does God come to a point with human beings, or not just human beings in general, but maybe human beings in general,

  72. but particular people where that's it, sick and tired of this, not talking, not having anything to do with them ever again, ever, ever, ever again?

  73. Happens to human beings?

  74. Is God like that?

  75. Now, when you realize that that's actually the question that the text is addressing, you realize that, whoa, one moment, okay,

  76. they might seem to answer it in an odd way that doesn't just sort of jump out at me with, like, you know, flashing lights.

  77. But it's actually a pretty good question.

  78. So it's really helpful if you have Bibles, if you open them to Romans 11.

  79. And we're going to begin, in fact, we're going to, Andrew, if you could put up the first, the Romans 11 text.

  80. You can find your Romans 11 in your Bible.

  81. But there's going to be a couple of times, I'm going to sort of cheat.

  82. I'm not saying this to stop us from talking.

  83. I'm not saying, okay, now you see 33 or 36.

  84. There's nothing else we have to talk about.

  85. You know, get, you know, repent and just, you know, shut up and, you know, get on with God.

  86. But this is how everything is going to come to an end.

  87. And if, in fact, part of the fundamental question before us, an existential question, is, is God like this?

  88. It's just really important to see where the whole argument of Romans 1 to 11 is going to come to rest.

  89. And if you get nothing else out of this service, we're going to read this verse together about four or five or six times.

  90. If you get nothing else out of the service but getting this a little tiny bit in your head, then this is really good.

  91. So let's, let's, could you say this with me out loud?

  92. Oh, the depths of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God.

  93. How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways.

  94. For who has known the mind of the Lord?

  95. Or who has been his counselor?

  96. Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?

  97. For from him and through him and to him are all things.

  98. To him be glory forever.

  99. Amen.

  100. So I'm not saying that just so we can say, okay, George, that's the end of the question.

  101. We don't have to discuss it.

  102. No, no, no, no, no.

  103. You know, the details are important.

  104. But it's, it's, it's a good bit of a pause here just to take a minute to think about how different God is.

  105. And we're going to see that we haven't even begun to really understand how different God is until we look into this text.

  106. How counterintuitive God often acts towards us because he's wiser than us.

  107. So, so let's look at the beginning of chapter 11, verse 1.

  108. And it goes like this.

  109. I ask then, has God rejected his people?

  110. By no means.

  111. For I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin.

  112. Now just pause here for a second.

  113. And if you're guests here this morning, you'll notice, actually all of you, even if you come here pretty well, you know, it's Romans chapter 11.

    Romans 11 chapter mention

  114. And, and the way the book, you know, Paul didn't just sit down and write a whole pile of quotes.

  115. If you, you know, I'm turning my Bible here, like he began writing over here and then he wrote and then he wrote and then he wrote and then he wrote and then he wrote and then he wrote and then he wrote and then he comes to chapter 11.

  116. So it's obviously sort of a bit of a flow.

  117. And, and part of the flow of it is that he's been really trying to talk about how God does everything, that, that God works so that we come to the point where we recognize that unless God does something for us, we're really stuck.

  118. Occasionally I let bad words slip just by accident because it's how I talk when I'm not up in the, in church.

  119. And then Andrew will say something.

  120. And I think the last time I let something slip, he deleted it.

  121. So there's no internet record.

  122. But I almost said something there, which maybe wouldn't be completely polite.

  123. But, you know, so anyway, so he goes through the fact that, you know, Paul is trying to argue that unless we come to this point where we realize unless God does something, we're really stuck because we're helpless.

  124. And then he talks about how Jesus and what Jesus does on the cross.

  125. And he gives the first few things in chapter four and five primarily about the things that Jesus takes away from us so we can be made right with God.

  126. And then chapter six, the things that Jesus gives us so that we're made right with God.

  127. And then in chapter seven, he, he, he acknowledges the fact that human beings are divided and have contradictory selves and that we're sort of all messed up and confused.

  128. And then in Romans eight, he's sort of coming to a bit of a crescendo and, and he says, there's no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

  129. And then he, he goes on and he has this ringing thing.

  130. In fact, I'll just read it to you right now.

  131. It says ringing, ringing thing at the end of Romans chapter eight.

  132. He says, um, uh, where does it start here?

  133. What shall we say?

  134. Verse 31.

  135. What shall we say then to those, to these things?

  136. If God is for us, who can be against us?

  137. He who did not spare his own son, but gave him up for us all.

  138. How will he not also with him graciously give us all things?

  139. Who shall bring any charge against God select those whom God has called and made right with himself?

  140. It is God who justifies who is to condemn.

  141. Who's going to condemn us?

  142. Christ Jesus.

  143. No, he is the one who died more than that.

  144. Who was raised?

  145. Who is at the right hand of God?

  146. Who is indeed interceding for us?

  147. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?

  148. Shall tribulation or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?

  149. As it is written.

  150. Then he quotes from the Bible to show that God knows that even after we have become his children,

  151. bad things will still happen to us.

  152. For your sake, we are being killed all the day long.

  153. We are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.

  154. No.

  155. And in Greek, it would be like bolded, emphatic.

  156. In all these things, we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

  157. For I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come,

  158. nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation,

  159. will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  160. Amen.

  161. And God's God people say amen.

  162. Exactly right.

  163. But in the way that the Romans is written, Paul knows that there's going to be some skeptic in the congregation.

  164. There always is.

  165. Actually, often it's me, but that's a separate story.

  166. Who puts up their little hand and says,

  167. that all sounds really nice, but what about the Jews?

  168. Like, what about all that Old Testament stuff we've been reading every week?

  169. And that doesn't seem to have worked out very well for them, does it?

  170. And so in chapter 9 and 10, he's really dealing with this question.

  171. Like, before Jesus, does God, in fact, keep his word?

  172. And in chapter 9 and 10,

  173. and so it comes now, here we are in verse 11,

  174. as part of Paul's long answering of this question,

  175. is Romans 8 actually true?

  176. And so now he comes to this point, this existential point,

  177. where we have to wonder, because it's just part of our very, very nature.

  178. Even when we deny God,

  179. often what we're doing is we're denying God who is a version of ourselves.

  180. And even when we believe in God,

  181. often we're not really believing in the God who is there,

  182. we're believing in a God who is a version of ourselves.

  183. I mean, it's a deeply seated human problem.

  184. It's a human problem for Christians as well.

  185. And so in chapter 11, verse 1, he asks,

  186. has God rejected his people?

  187. Is God like the young woman

  188. who lives in a house with her father for three years,

  189. and even though the father will attempt conversation,

  190. she will act like he is the table or the chair,

  191. and who talks to tables and chairs,

  192. or listens to them?

  193. As a side, if you think your table's talking to you,

  194. and you're listening,

  195. you need help.

  196. You need help.

  197. We don't talk to tables or listen to them.

  198. So is God like that?

  199. Has he rejected us so totally?

  200. Absolutely.

  201. And, you know, some of us might say,

  202. oh yeah, you know, we've been over that.

  203. But, you know,

  204. the Baptist church I grew up in,

  205. and I'm not picking on Baptist churches,

  206. you know, it would often happen

  207. that a couple,

  208. their marriage would quietly come to an end.

  209. And even though it was a church that preached grace,

  210. the fact of the matter is,

  211. is that for many Christians,

  212. it's their spiritual and emotional performance

  213. that makes them think they're right with God.

  214. And so their marriage would come to an end,

  215. and both the husband and the wife

  216. would stop attending the church.

  217. Because their performance

  218. hasn't matched the standards of the church,

  219. and there's a feeling that God has rejected them.

  220. And therefore, they don't belong with other,

  221. those Christians.

  222. It's a deep question.

  223. So see how he answers it.

  224. It's going to be a little bit in odd language,

  225. because you see,

  226. the way we work in our culture,

  227. we'd want to try to,

  228. I'd maybe want to say,

  229. well, let's look at Bob.

  230. Here's Bob's life.

  231. Or let's look at Sally,

  232. and this is their life.

  233. But no, no.

  234. He actually, he goes back to the Bible,

  235. because he realizes that, you know,

  236. human experiences,

  237. it can be hard to know what goes on in human lives.

  238. So let's see God's actual written record

  239. of how he deals with Israel.

  240. And so here it is.

  241. I ask then, has God rejected his people?

  242. By no means.

  243. No.

  244. No.

  245. Absolutely not.

  246. So he's going to basically give two reasons

  247. why God hasn't rejected his people.

  248. First, he's going to say,

  249. I'm exhibit A,

  250. in terms of evidence.

  251. Verse 2.

  252. No, just the end of verse 1.

  253. For I myself am an Israelite,

  254. a descendant of Abraham,

  255. a member of the tribe of Benjamin.

  256. God has not rejected his people,

  257. whom he foreknew.

  258. Then he gives exhibit B.

  259. He goes back to the story

  260. in the Old Testament about Elijah,

  261. when it looked as if

  262. every single person in Israel

  263. had fallen into idolatry and paganism,

  264. and completely rejected the Lord.

  265. I think it's Numbers 14.

  266. Do you not know what the scripture says of Elijah,

  267. how he appeals to God against Israel?

  268. Lord, they have killed your prophets.

  269. They have demolished your altars,

  270. and I alone am left,

  271. and they seek my life.

  272. But what is God's reply to Elijah?

  273. I have kept for myself 7,000 men

  274. who have not bowed the knee to Baal.

  275. So too, at the present time,

  276. there is a remnant chosen by grace.

  277. Now just pause here for a second.

  278. I'm going to put a point up in a moment,

  279. but this is going to be really important.

  280. What's going to be constantly emphasized

  281. in this entire text

  282. is the reality of God's grace.

  283. The surprising nature of God's grace.

  284. The unstoppable nature of God's grace.

  285. The irrevocable character of God's grace.

  286. What's constantly going to be emphasized in this

  287. is that grace is a mystery

  288. because we don't actually really understand

  289. who God is,

  290. and we keep wanting to try to make God

  291. look like ourselves,

  292. and we know that we lack grace,

  293. that we have hard hearts against certain people.

  294. We have grace towards those we love,

  295. but not very much grace towards certain people.

  296. I'll try to show that to you later on in the sermon.

  297. And he's going to try to show you

  298. that all grace is a miracle,

  299. and that every human being who receives God's grace,

  300. there's a miracle in their lives.

  301. And so right here when he says

  302. there's a remnant chosen by grace,

  303. this is going to be really important.

  304. It's going to get deep in.

  305. And the rest of the imagery in the book of Romans 11

  306. is trying to emphasize this aspect of grace.

  307. Grace to become a Christian,

  308. grace to stay a Christian,

  309. grace to be glorified with the Father,

  310. the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

  311. and the new heaven and the new earth,

  312. to live in all eternity with him.

  313. In verse 6,

  314. but if it is by grace,

  315. it is no longer on the basis of works.

  316. Otherwise, grace would no longer be grace.

  317. Just to pause,

  318. you see,

  319. those people in the Baptist churches

  320. that I grew up in,

  321. they sort of believed,

  322. like us,

  323. that grace makes you a Christian,

  324. but after that it's your performance.

  325. And Paul is going to say

  326. that we need to be gripped

  327. by the gospel of grace

  328. to understand that it's always grace,

  329. all the time,

  330. that we become a Christian by grace,

  331. we stay a Christian by grace,

  332. we die a Christian by grace,

  333. and grace means grace,

  334. that it's not my performance.

  335. It never is my performance.

  336. Absolutely never.

  337. In verse 7,

  338. what then?

  339. Israel failed to obtain

  340. what it was seeking.

  341. In other words,

  342. it was seeking to be right with God,

  343. but it was seeking it not by grace,

  344. but by its accomplishments.

  345. It fell into all sorts of errors.

  346. The elect obtained it,

  347. that is,

  348. those whom God has called,

  349. but the rest were hardened.

  350. As it is written,

  351. God gave them a spirit of stupor,

  352. eyes that would not see

  353. and ears that would not hear,

  354. down to this very day.

  355. And David says,

  356. let their table become a snare

  357. and a trap,

  358. a stumbling block

  359. and a retribution for them.

  360. Let their eyes be darkened

  361. so that they cannot see

  362. and bend their backs forever.

  363. Now,

  364. just before we go on,

  365. we're going to keep sort of

  366. trying to get this part of it

  367. sort of in our minds.

  368. Andrew,

  369. if you could put the first point up,

  370. please.

  371. God hardens those,

  372. God hardens those

  373. who harden themselves,

  374. but even then,

  375. God's grace through Jesus Messiah

  376. can always be the final word about me.

  377. I don't always remember to do it,

  378. but I always try to put my points as me

  379. so that if you're writing them down,

  380. if there's something you want to think about later on,

  381. it's saying me.

  382. You know,

  383. you're saying it about yourself.

  384. That God hardens those

  385. who harden themselves,

  386. but even then,

  387. God's grace through Jesus Messiah

  388. can always be the final word about me.

  389. I don't say it will always be

  390. the final word about me

  391. because some people persist in unbelief

  392. right to the grave.

  393. But what this text is going to say

  394. is that for no human being

  395. does being closed to God

  396. and rejecting God

  397. have to be the final word about you.

  398. That it does not matter

  399. if you're sitting here this morning

  400. and you've been divorced

  401. and married and divorced seven times.

  402. It doesn't matter

  403. if you've done unbelievably horrible things.

  404. It doesn't matter at all

  405. what your sexual orientation is.

  406. It doesn't matter anything

  407. about your heritage or your background.

  408. It doesn't matter how successful

  409. or how much of a failure you've been.

  410. that there is always the chance

  411. to receive God's grace

  412. and that from that time

  413. of receiving God's grace,

  414. God's grace will be

  415. that final word about you

  416. until you appear to God face to face.

  417. And that's what Paul

  418. is going to try to emphasize here,

  419. that even when God judges,

  420. grace is present.

  421. You see, hardness doesn't necessarily mean

  422. that we have lots of anxiety.

  423. It just means closeness in a sense.

  424. I don't know how many of you

  425. have ever had this misfortune

  426. of when you go to a wedding

  427. or something like that

  428. or you go to a funeral reception,

  429. you end up having to sit down

  430. and you sit down beside people around you

  431. and you know,

  432. you're feeling a little bit of chatty mood

  433. and you're, you know,

  434. we're Canadians,

  435. we should chat at things.

  436. So you ask the person beside you a question

  437. and they give you a grunt for an answer.

  438. Try another question, grunt.

  439. Another question, grunt.

  440. Another question, grunt.

  441. You're thinking, gosh,

  442. normally four questions are like enough

  443. to get at least some type

  444. of a conversation going

  445. and every question there's a grunt.

  446. They're just completely closed.

  447. That's fundamentally what hardness means.

  448. And you'll see here

  449. that in these texts

  450. it looked very daunting

  451. that actually what God does

  452. is he allows people

  453. to have what they want.

  454. Look at,

  455. he gave them a spirit of stupor.

  456. In other words,

  457. that they're not interested.

  458. That they're sort of closed.

  459. Eyes that would not see,

  460. they don't want to see.

  461. Ears that do not,

  462. ears that would not hear,

  463. they don't want to hear.

  464. You know,

  465. but then even when it says

  466. a snare and a trap,

  467. a stumbling back and a red,

  468. you know,

  469. eyes darken and all that.

  470. And, you know,

  471. and then it asks in verse 11,

  472. so I ask,

  473. did they stumble in order

  474. that they might fall by no means?

  475. And just before we get

  476. in terms of the surprising way

  477. that God, you know,

  478. puts it,

  479. is that

  480. stumbling is sometimes

  481. a way to find things.

  482. I mean, you know,

  483. just after the winter solstice,

  484. I have to wake up

  485. at six o'clock in the morning.

  486. I don't always manage it

  487. quite that early,

  488. but six o'clock,

  489. it's still dark.

  490. I don't want to wake up my wife

  491. who's sleeping beside me.

  492. And sometimes the way

  493. I find something in my room

  494. is by stumbling over it.

  495. I mean,

  496. some of us have PhDs

  497. in what we've learned

  498. by falling over it.

  499. You know?

  500. In other words,

  501. some of us,

  502. doesn't matter where

  503. we formerly went to university,

  504. our real university

  505. is the School of Hard Knocks.

  506. And we have PhDs

  507. from the School of Hard Knocks.

  508. And sometimes,

  509. Hard Knocks

  510. is the only way

  511. we find anything or learn.

  512. You see,

  513. so even in this,

  514. and then when it says here,

  515. verse 11,

  516. so I asked,

  517. did they stumble

  518. in order that they might fall?

  519. And as I said earlier,

  520. in the Greek,

  521. it's that they fall irrevocably,

  522. that they fall

  523. and never return up.

  524. And this is really

  525. an important question

  526. because,

  527. you see,

  528. this,

  529. if we're honest with ourselves,

  530. many of us wish this

  531. for certain people.

  532. And so,

  533. therefore,

  534. at the back of our minds,

  535. whether we consciously

  536. express it or not,

  537. we worry that God's like this.

  538. How many people

  539. were hoping

  540. that Harper would lose,

  541. that he would fall,

  542. and that he would fall

  543. in such a way

  544. that he would never rise?

  545. How many people

  546. are hoping

  547. that Trump will fall?

  548. And that when he falls,

  549. he will fall

  550. and be revealed

  551. as a complete

  552. and utter buffoon

  553. and he'll be mocked

  554. and he will never rise again.

  555. How many people

  556. hope that Trudeau

  557. will have that happen to him?

  558. Or Hillary Clinton?

  559. How many people hope that?

  560. And if I haven't picked

  561. one of your four things,

  562. because really,

  563. you think,

  564. you don't follow politics at all,

  565. you have no idea

  566. who I even talked about,

  567. there's something else

  568. in your sphere of influence.

  569. Maybe you're a foodie

  570. who doesn't follow politics.

  571. And for you,

  572. it's people who eat at McDonald's.

  573. I don't know.

  574. You know,

  575. you hope that they get sick

  576. and they fall

  577. and they just keep

  578. going down, down.

  579. You know,

  580. it's a human thing, folks.

  581. And if we're honest,

  582. there are people

  583. that we think that of.

  584. I've told this before,

  585. but you know,

  586. I came out of the counterculture.

  587. I was like a neo-Marxist,

  588. I was very left-wing.

  589. And I remember,

  590. I really,

  591. and I was really

  592. into protest music.

  593. And when I heard

  594. that Bob Dylan

  595. became a Christian,

  596. I thought,

  597. yes,

  598. Bob Dylan

  599. became a Christian.

  600. When I heard

  601. that Charles Colson,

  602. who was the right-hand man

  603. for Richard Nixon,

  604. that right-wing president,

  605. I said,

  606. that dirty rat,

  607. he didn't become

  608. a Christian.

  609. He's just trying

  610. to get out

  611. of being punished.

  612. And I would have just said

  613. I was being prophetic,

  614. not revealing

  615. my hard,

  616. unfeeling heart.

  617. Colson obviously

  618. became a Christian,

  619. by the way.

  620. So Paul's asking

  621. this really,

  622. really tough question.

  623. And once again,

  624. it all goes to

  625. how we view God.

  626. Do we believe this

  627. about God?

  628. Like,

  629. let's just sort of,

  630. you know,

  631. keep going.

  632. Because part of the problem

  633. is,

  634. remember a few weeks ago

  635. we looked at how

  636. God reveals himself

  637. that he's the potter

  638. and we are the clay,

  639. and the fact of the matter

  640. is that human beings

  641. believe that we're the potter

  642. and God is the clay.

  643. And we both love that

  644. and we're terrified by it.

  645. If we're honest with ourselves,

  646. if we think about it.

  647. We love it

  648. because we can form God

  649. the way we want.

  650. We're terrified

  651. because God ends up

  652. being exactly like us.

  653. Verse 11.

  654. So I asked,

  655. did they,

  656. so remember,

  657. so the point here

  658. in all of this stuff

  659. is that what Paul

  660. is trying to say

  661. is the reality of grace,

  662. the constancy of grace,

  663. the fact that

  664. it's never the case.

  665. God is not like you and me.

  666. Thanks be to God.

  667. He does not look at St. Clair.

  668. He does not look

  669. at any single person

  670. in this room.

  671. He doesn't look at Trump,

  672. Harper,

  673. Trudeau,

  674. or Clinton

  675. and say,

  676. I hope these guys

  677. fall in such a way

  678. that they just fall

  679. and fall and fall

  680. and there is no bottom

  681. to that hole.

  682. God is never like that.

  683. Up until our final breath,

  684. his hope is

  685. that we will turn to him

  686. and receive his grace

  687. and be made right with God.

  688. Verse 11 again.

  689. So I asked,

  690. did they stumble

  691. in order that they might

  692. fall and fall and fall

  693. and fall?

  694. By no means.

  695. And this is now

  696. the surprising thing.

  697. Rather,

  698. through their trespass,

  699. salvation has come

  700. to the pagans

  701. so as to make Israel jealous.

  702. I'm going to explain

  703. this in a moment.

  704. Now,

  705. if their trespass

  706. means riches

  707. for the world,

  708. that means,

  709. and here the world

  710. means all the people

  711. groups on the planet.

  712. And if their failure

  713. means riches

  714. for the pagans,

  715. he's basically

  716. just reiterating it

  717. to bring in the emphasis,

  718. how much more

  719. will their full inclusion mean?

  720. Now I am speaking

  721. to you pagans

  722. inasmuch then

  723. as I am an apostle

  724. to the pagans.

  725. I magnify my ministry

  726. in order that somehow

  727. to make my fellow Jews

  728. jealous

  729. and thus save some of them.

  730. Remember,

  731. the opening question

  732. is has God rejected

  733. his Jewish people?

  734. For if their rejection,

  735. that's not that

  736. they've been rejected

  737. by God,

  738. but their rejection

  739. of God,

  740. okay?

  741. They've rejected God.

  742. If their rejection

  743. means the reconciliation

  744. of the world,

  745. what will their acceptance

  746. mean but life

  747. from the dead?

  748. If the dough offered

  749. as first fruits

  750. is holy,

  751. so is the whole lump.

  752. And if the root is holy,

  753. so are the branches.

  754. Now we just sort of

  755. want to pause here

  756. for a tiny,

  757. tiny,

  758. tiny bit of a

  759. second

  760. because there's going

  761. to be a bit

  762. of a transition here.

  763. Just as part

  764. of this transition,

  765. many of you know

  766. that one of the problems

  767. that's going on

  768. in Canada

  769. and throughout

  770. the Western world

  771. right now

  772. is rising antisemitism.

  773. And those of you

  774. who are still

  775. university students,

  776. you know that one

  777. of the centers

  778. of rising antisemitism

  779. is university campuses.

  780. In fact,

  781. it's the intelligentsia

  782. which is part

  783. of the source

  784. of growing antisemitism

  785. in our country

  786. and in Europe.

  787. And as well as that,

  788. we have to realize

  789. that Christians

  790. have a terrible past

  791. and history

  792. of antisemitism.

  793. Hopefully,

  794. this text

  795. will help us

  796. to realize

  797. that not just

  798. antisemitism

  799. but all prejudice,

  800. all hatred

  801. of people groups

  802. just because

  803. of who they are

  804. is deeply unbiblical

  805. and deeply unchristian.

  806. All of it.

  807. I mean,

  808. it's very interesting

  809. how the text was put

  810. because it says

  811. that the Jewish

  812. rejection

  813. of the gospel

  814. has led

  815. that Christians,

  816. that pagans

  817. become Christians

  818. and that every people group

  819. is to hear about Jesus.

  820. Every people group.

  821. There's to be no prejudice.

  822. Like,

  823. just because we're prejudiced

  824. doesn't mean

  825. we're not a Christian,

  826. okay?

  827. But every one of us

  828. who has some prejudice

  829. against another people group,

  830. that is deeply offensive

  831. to the Bible.

  832. And the Bible

  833. is going to now

  834. move the image

  835. to root this,

  836. this complete rejection

  837. of antisemitism

  838. and complete rejection

  839. of all prejudice

  840. in yet more

  841. of the miracle

  842. of God's grace.

  843. But before we do that,

  844. could you put up

  845. Romans 11 again?

  846. Because I want us

  847. to keep remembering

  848. that we're all talking

  849. about God

  850. and how he's not like us.

  851. Could you read this text

  852. with me again, please?

  853. Oh, the depths

  854. of the riches

  855. and wisdom

  856. and knowledge

  857. of God.

  858. How unsearchable

  859. are his judgments

  860. and how inscrutable

  861. his ways.

  862. For who has known

  863. the mind of the Lord

  864. or who has been

  865. his counselor

  866. or who has given

  867. a gift to him

  868. that he might

  869. be repaid?

  870. For from him

  871. and through him

  872. and to him

  873. are all things.

  874. To him be glory

  875. forever.

  876. Amen.

  877. So let's keep reading

  878. from verse 17

  879. and we'll see here

  880. how the Bible

  881. is going to give

  882. this profound image

  883. that even deeply,

  884. more deeply rejects

  885. all antisemitism

  886. and indirectly then

  887. all prejudice.

  888. Verse 17.

  889. But if some of the branches

  890. were broken off,

  891. he's talking about

  892. the olive tree, right?

  893. We'll see in a moment

  894. it's an olive tree.

  895. But if some of the branches

  896. were broken off

  897. and you,

  898. although a wild olive shoot,

  899. were grafted in

  900. among the others

  901. and now share

  902. in the nourishing root

  903. of the olive tree,

  904. do not be arrogant

  905. toward the branches.

  906. If you are,

  907. remember it is not you

  908. who support the root,

  909. but the root

  910. that supports you.

  911. Then you will say,

  912. branches were broken off

  913. so that I may be grafted in.

  914. That is true.

  915. They were broken off

  916. because of their unbelief,

  917. but you stand fast

  918. through faith.

  919. So do not become proud,

  920. but fear.

  921. For if God did not spare

  922. the natural branches,

  923. neither will he spare you.

  924. Note then the kindness

  925. and the severity of God,

  926. severity towards those

  927. who have fallen,

  928. but God's kindness to you,

  929. provided you continue

  930. in his kindness.

  931. Otherwise,

  932. you too will be cut off.

  933. And even they,

  934. if they do not continue

  935. in their unbelief,

  936. will be grafted in.

  937. For God has the power

  938. to graft them in a game.

  939. For if you were cut

  940. from what is by nature

  941. a wild olive tree

  942. and grafted contrary to nature

  943. into a cultivated olive tree,

  944. how much more will these,

  945. the natural branches,

  946. be grafted back

  947. into their own olive tree?

  948. That's a lot of different things

  949. in there.

  950. It was a long reading,

  951. but here's the,

  952. could you put up the point,

  953. Andrew,

  954. the second point?

  955. God has only one olive tree

  956. and we can only be grafted

  957. into that by a miracle

  958. of his powerful grace.

  959. That's what he's trying

  960. to communicate here.

  961. One of the,

  962. you know,

  963. one of the,

  964. when I said that

  965. beginning of the service

  966. that some people get,

  967. hear Romans 11,

  968. get bored,

  969. others in the room,

  970. a minority,

  971. they get all excited

  972. about Romans 11.

  973. Why?

  974. Because they can fight over it.

  975. In fact,

  976. that's one of the things

  977. that non-Christians

  978. don't like about Christians.

  979. It seems it either goes

  980. from being,

  981. they either go from talking

  982. about unbelievably boring things

  983. to wanting to fight

  984. about boring things.

  985. And so for some Christians,

  986. they love going to Romans 11

  987. because it gets them

  988. to talk about different things

  989. about Jewish and Israel

  990. and the place of Israel.

  991. And what we're going to see

  992. in this text

  993. is that the Bible,

  994. on one hand,

  995. condemns fully anti-Semitism,

  996. but it also completely

  997. and utterly rejects

  998. any attempt

  999. to make Israel

  1000. or Jewish people

  1001. into an idol.

  1002. This Bible completely

  1003. and utterly rejects

  1004. the idea

  1005. that Jewish people

  1006. don't have to come

  1007. to faith in Jesus,

1008. that just by being Jewish,

1009. they will be reconciled to God.

1010. This Bible text rejects it.

1011. Olive tree is an original image

  1012. of Israel

1013. and it's extended by Paul

1014. to mean all who come

1015. to be part of God's people.

  1016. And God doesn't have

  1017. two olive trees,

  1018. one for pagans

  1019. and one for Jews.

1020. There's only one olive tree.

  1021. Only one olive tree.

  1022. And the other thing

  1023. that this text does

  1024. is it tells us

  1025. that Christians,

  1026. not only evangelicals

  1027. and charismatics,

  1028. some of them

1029. who believe that Jewish people

  1030. don't have to come

  1031. to faith in Jewish

1032. because they have their own way

1033. of being made right with God,

  1034. it also says

  1035. that the Anglican Church

  1036. of Canada,

  1037. when they say

1038. that we should not pray

  1039. for the salvation

  1040. of Jewish people,

  1041. is an error.

  1042. And it says

1043. that when the Roman Catholic Church

  1044. has just recently

  1045. made a statement

1046. that we aren't to pray

1047. and work for the conversion

  1048. of Jewish people,

  1049. the Roman Catholic Church

  1050. is an error.

1051. There is one olive tree.

  1052. Could you put up

  1053. the second point here?

  1054. Oh yeah,

  1055. it's up already.

  1056. So here it is.

1057. God has only one olive tree

1058. and we can only be grafted

  1059. into that

  1060. by a miracle

  1061. of his powerful grace.

  1062. I'm terrible with gardening.

  1063. There's been a couple of times

1064. my wife has been gone

1065. for a couple of weeks

  1066. and I forget

  1067. to water the plants.

  1068. Like I completely forget

  1069. to water the plants.

  1070. When I was single,

  1071. my plants suffered

  1072. one of two fates.

  1073. They would either die

  1074. of dehydration

  1075. or they would die

  1076. of root rot

1077. because I would water them

  1078. so constantly.

  1079. And very early on

  1080. in our marriage,

  1081. my wife learned

1082. that you never send George

1083. out to weed the garden

  1084. because George

  1085. hasn't the vaguest idea

  1086. between the difference

  1087. between a carrot growing

  1088. and a weed growing

  1089. or anything else.

  1090. I'm completely hopeless.

1091. So for those of us,

  1092. I didn't know this

  1093. until I read

  1094. the commentaries on it.

1095. If you take Paul's example

  1096. and you take

1097. a good healthy olive tree

  1098. and you graft

  1099. a wild olive branch

  1100. into it,

1101. if you try to follow that

1102. to have lots of olives,

  1103. you'll fail

  1104. because grafting

  1105. wild olive branches

1106. into a healthy olive tree

  1107. creates less fruitfulness.

1108. So what's Paul saying here?

  1109. Paul is saying

  1110. that he's not,

  1111. Paul,

  1112. this is,

  1113. you see,

1114. it's not about natural processes.

1115. It's never about natural processes.

  1116. Grace on one level

  1117. is never natural.

  1118. It isn't that somehow

  1119. or another

  1120. that these natural,

  1121. these pagan branches

  1122. are coming in

1123. and that's going to just

  1124. sort of naturally

  1125. make the whole tree

  1126. of all the people

  1127. who are God's better.

  1128. It's grace.

  1129. It's a miracle.

  1130. It's not natural.

1131. It's not some natural process.

  1132. Nothing's a natural process.

  1133. We keep thinking

  1134. there's natural processes.

1135. We look at the world

  1136. and we say

1137. that person could very naturally

1138. and easily become a Christian

1139. and that person could naturally

1140. and not become a Christian

1141. and not go God's grace.

  1142. You know,

  1143. look at them.

  1144. Look at those earrings

1145. or look at those tattoos

1146. or look at the way they,

  1147. you know,

  1148. look at that.

  1149. They drive gas guzzlers

  1150. or look at that.

  1151. They eat at McDonald's

  1152. or look at that.

  1153. They vote for Trump

  1154. or look at that.

  1155. They vote for Sanders

  1156. or, you know,

  1157. whatever it is.

1158. We all have our different prejudices

  1159. about what is natural

1160. and the Bible wants to keep reminding us

  1161. that it's never natural.

  1162. Never.

  1163. It's always a miracle of grace.

1164. And if we go around

  1165. thinking,

  1166. you know,

  1167. the Jewish people,

  1168. they'll never come to a faith.

  1169. You know,

  1170. that my Jewish dentist

  1171. or my Jewish doctor,

1172. I actually happen to have

  1173. a dentist who's Jewish

1174. and the doctor who's Jewish

  1175. just by,

  1176. well,

  1177. maybe not coincidence,

  1178. by providence.

  1179. But I,

  1180. you know,

  1181. you maybe think,

  1182. oh,

1183. you can't share the gospel with them.

1184. You know what I mean?

  1185. It's just,

  1186. it's very natural.

  1187. This whole image

  1188. is that God's church

  1189. is never natural.

  1190. It's always supernatural

1191. and it's always by grace.

  1192. It's always by grace.

  1193. It's always a miracle.

  1194. Only a miracle.

  1195. That's how he works.

  1196. That's how he works.

1197. If you could put up

  1198. Romans 1 for us,

  1199. Andrew.

1200. You have to be careful

  1201. here at the time.

  1202. This is the verse

  1203. for all of Romans.

1204. Can you guys read it

  1205. with me, please?

1206. For I am not ashamed

  1207. of the gospel.

1208. For it is the power of God

  1209. for salvation

  1210. to everyone who believes,

  1211. to the Jew first

1212. and also to the Greek.

  1213. For in the gospel,

  1214. the righteousness of God

  1215. is revealed

  1216. from faith to faith.

  1217. As it is written,

  1218. the righteous

  1219. shall live by faith.

  1220. And I've explained before

  1221. how everything

1222. in the book of Romans

1223. is sort of just trying

  1224. to fill that in

  1225. and help us

  1226. to understand it.

1227. And the heart of this text

  1228. is that the heart

  1229. of this text

  1230. is that the gospel

  1231. telling you about

  1232. what Jesus did

1233. for us on the cross,

1234. that that is a power

  1235. that comes from God.

  1236. It's God's power

  1237. that makes us right

  1238. with him

  1239. and we receive it

  1240. by believing,

  1241. by putting our faith

  1242. and trust in him.

  1243. And that God works

1244. in a way that is right

  1245. to make us right

  1246. with him

  1247. and it's all God.

  1248. All God.

  1249. Completely God.

  1250. Nothing of us.

  1251. All we do

  1252. is receive it.

  1253. We are beggars.

1254. We are a chosen people

  1255. not choice people.

  1256. Chosen people

  1257. not choice people.

  1258. Andrew,

  1259. could you put up

  1260. the Romans 11 text

  1261. for me right now,

  1262. please?

  1263. I don't know

1264. if that's in the right order.

  1265. Let's just read this

  1266. together again as well.

  1267. Oh, the depth

  1268. of the riches

  1269. and wisdom

  1270. and knowledge of God.

  1271. How unsearchable

  1272. are his judgments

  1273. and how inscrutable

  1274. his ways.

  1275. For who has known

1276. the mind of the Lord

  1277. or who has been

  1278. his counselor

  1279. or who has given

  1280. a gift to him

1281. that he might be repaid?

  1282. For from him

  1283. and through him

  1284. and to him

  1285. are all things.

1286. To him be glory forever.

  1287. Amen.

  1288. So,

  1289. God is just really,

  1290. really different than us

  1291. and that's really,

  1292. really, really good.

1293. and nothing can stop him

  1294. from showing grace.

  1295. He never regrets

  1296. or wants to change

  1297. his mind

  1298. about calling

  1299. any one of you

  1300. to be his child.

  1301. I don't have any authority

  1302. to say that myself

1303. but it's what the Bible says.

  1304. Just if you look

  1305. at verse 25,

  1306. lest you be wise

  1307. in your own sight,

1308. I do not want you

  1309. to be unaware

  1310. of this mystery,

  1311. brothers and sisters.

  1312. A partial hardening

  1313. has come upon Israel

  1314. until the fullness

  1315. of the Gentiles

  1316. has come in

  1317. and in this way

1318. all Israel will be saved

  1319. and all Israel,

  1320. by the way,

  1321. doesn't mean every

  1322. Jewish person,

  1323. like when we think

  1324. of the last time

  1325. Canada was in the

  1326. World Cup of Hockey

  1327. or the Olympics

  1328. for the gold medal,

  1329. you could say

  1330. all of Canada

  1331. watched the game.

  1332. We don't mean

  1333. every Canadian

  1334. watched the game,

  1335. right?

  1336. But you know

1337. what you mean by that

  1338. and that's what

  1339. you're saying

  1340. that there's

  1341. potentially a time

  1342. when many Jewish people

1343. will come to a faith

  1344. in Jesus.

  1345. Verse 26 again,

  1346. in this way

1347. all Israel will be saved

  1348. as it is written,

  1349. the deliverer

  1350. will come from Zion

  1351. and he will banish

  1352. ungodliness from Jacob

  1353. and this will be

  1354. my covenant with them

  1355. when I take away

  1356. their sins.

  1357. As regards the gospel

  1358. they are enemies

  1359. for your sake,

  1360. that's temporarily,

  1361. but as regards election

  1362. they are beloved

  1363. for the sake

  1364. of their forefathers

  1365. for the gifts

  1366. and calling of God

  1367. are irrevocable.

  1368. Could you put up

  1369. the next point,

  1370. Andrew, please?

  1371. God's call

  1372. God's call

  1373. is irrevocable

  1374. but it is not

  1375. unconditional.

  1376. God's call

  1377. is irrevocable

  1378. but it is not

  1379. unconditional.

  1380. What Paul is saying

  1381. here is this

  1382. and this word

  1383. irrevocable

  1384. is a very, very,

  1385. very good word

  1386. but underneath it

  1387. there's a deeper

  1388. type of image

  1389. that makes it

  1390. even more wonderful

1391. because one of the things

  1392. that we regularly

  1393. have as people

  1394. is maybe we offer

  1395. to, I don't know,

  1396. maybe we offer

  1397. to lend somebody money

  1398. or we lend somebody

  1399. clothes

  1400. and then afterwards

  1401. we regret it

  1402. and then we want

1403. to renege on our deal

  1404. we want it back

  1405. and what Paul

  1406. is saying here

  1407. is that God

  1408. never regrets

  1409. calling a person

  1410. to be his own

  1411. and he never

  1412. takes it back.

  1413. It's irrevocable.

  1414. It's irrevocable.

  1415. Some of you

  1416. might say

  1417. George

  1418. that all sounds

  1419. very good

  1420. but wasn't there

  1421. earlier this part

  1422. about if you don't

  1423. stay and you don't

  1424. stay in faith

  1425. you're going to

  1426. lose your faith.

  1427. Wasn't that somewhere

  1428. earlier

  1429. and I just noticed

  1430. that you kept

  1431. reading and reading

  1432. and reading

  1433. but that jumped

  1434. out at me

  1435. George.

  1436. That jumped out

  1437. at me

  1438. at this idea

  1439. that isn't that

  1440. really more

  1441. the experience

  1442. that you can

  1443. have a faith

  1444. in Jesus

  1445. and all that

  1446. but then later

  1447. on you just

  1448. get over it

  1449. and then it's

  1450. all over

  1451. and it doesn't

  1452. seem as if

  1453. it's irrevocable.

  1454. Isn't that what

  1455. the Bible

  1456. just said

  1457. a few minutes

  1458. ago?

  1459. Let's look at

  1460. it in closing.

  1461. It was earlier

  1462. on in verses

  1463. 19 to 23.

  1464. It goes like this

  1465. then you will say

  1466. branches were broken

  1467. off so that I

  1468. might be grafted

  1469. in.

  1470. That is true

  1471. they were broken

  1472. off because of

  1473. their unbelief

  1474. but you stand

  1475. fast through

  1476. faith.

  1477. So do not

  1478. become proud

  1479. but fear

  1480. for if God

  1481. did not spare

  1482. the natural

  1483. branches

  1484. neither will he

  1485. spare you.

  1486. Note then

  1487. the kindness

  1488. and the severity

  1489. of God

  1490. severity towards

  1491. those who have

  1492. fallen

  1493. but God's

  1494. kindness to you

  1495. provided you

  1496. continue in his

  1497. kindness

  1498. otherwise you too

  1499. will be cut off

  1500. and even if they

  1501. even if

  1502. and even they

  1503. if they do not

  1504. continue in their

  1505. unbelief

  1506. will be grafted in

  1507. for God has the

  1508. power to graft

  1509. them in a game.

  1510. Here's the thing

  1511. this text

  1512. is not talking

  1513. about people

  1514. being

  1515. who come to

  1516. faith in Jesus

  1517. being cut off

  1518. by God.

  1519. Andrew if you

  1520. could put up

  1521. the next point

  1522. true faith in

  1523. Jesus has

  1524. several counterfeits

  1525. one of which

  1526. is presumption.

  1527. This text

  1528. isn't talking

  1529. about how God

  1530. is going to

  1531. cut people off

  1532. who don't

  1533. perform well

  1534. this text

  1535. is talking

  1536. about how

  1537. God eventually

  1538. reveals

  1539. counterfeit

  1540. faith.

  1541. Counterfeit

  1542. faith.

  1543. And there's

  1544. different types

  1545. of counterfeit

  1546. faith but the

  1547. one which Paul

  1548. is talking

  1549. about here

  1550. is presumption.

  1551. Andrew if you

  1552. could put up

  1553. the next point

  1554. please.

  1555. God wants me

  1556. to die to

  1557. presumption

  1558. and deepen

  1559. in gospel

  1560. faith.

  1561. He wants me

  1562. to die to

  1563. arrogance

  1564. and deepen

  1565. in gospel

  1566. assurance.

  1567. God wants me

  1568. to die to

  1569. presumption

  1570. and deepen

  1571. in gospel

  1572. faith.

  1573. He wants me

  1574. to die to

  1575. arrogance

  1576. and deepen

  1577. in gospel

  1578. assurance.

  1579. See the

  1580. fundamental human

  1581. problem is that

  1582. we want to be

  1583. like God.

  1584. And so for

  1585. some of us

  1586. when we hear

  1587. this offer

  1588. of the gospel

  1589. that God

  1590. will make us

  1591. right with

  1592. himself and

  1593. that nothing

  1594. can then

  1595. separate us

  1596. from the love

  1597. of God

  1598. that we are

  1599. guaranteed

  1600. that we will

  1601. be with God

  1602. forever.

  1603. For some

  1604. people all

  1605. they do is

  1606. just take that

  1607. that they've

  1608. got.

  1609. It's not a

  1610. conscious thing

  1611. but that they've

  1612. got God

  1613. by the

  1614. shortened

  1615. Harry's

  1616. that they

  1617. figured out

  1618. a way

  1619. around God

  1620. and they

  1621. hear that

  1622. and they

  1623. say wow

  1624. that's

  1625. fantastic

  1626. I don't

  1627. have

  1628. God's

  1629. going to

  1630. make me

  1631. go to

  1632. heaven

  1633. no matter

  1634. what I

  1635. do.

  1636. I've got

  1637. to get

  1638. out of jail

  1639. free card

  1640. and it

  1641. just leads

  1642. to a type

  1643. of laziness

  1644. and complete

  1645. and utter

  1646. indifference

  1647. and it

  1648. leads to a

  1649. type of

  1650. pride

  1651. and arrogance

  1652. and at

  1653. the very

  1654. very center

  1655. of it

  1656. we start

  1657. to think

  1658. that we're

  1659. not

  1660. it's not

  1661. that God

  1662. chose

  1663. us

  1664. but that

  1665. there's

  1666. something

  1667. choice

  1668. about

  1669. us

  1670. but

  1671. true

  1672. faith

  1673. has

  1674. come

  1675. to the

  1676. point

  1677. in time

  1678. when they

  1679. recognize

  1680. that

  1681. all of

  1682. my life

  1683. maybe

  1684. those of

  1685. you who've

  1686. been

  1687. growing up

  1688. in

  1689. Muslim

  1690. backgrounds

  1691. or Orthodox

  1692. Jewish

  1693. backgrounds

  1694. or just

  1695. households

  1696. where there's

  1697. lots of

  1698. a type

  1699. of moralism

  1700. and lots

  1701. of rules

  1702. and where

  1703. the parents

  1704. love

  1705. seems to

  1706. be

  1707. conditional

  1708. upon

  1709. performance

  1710. and it

  1711. just seems

  1712. as if

  1713. our whole

  1714. life is

  1715. trying to

  1716. be about

  1717. performance

  1718. and about

  1719. performance

  1720. and about

  1721. performance

  1722. and God

  1723. wants us

  1724. to come

  1725. to the

  1726. point

  1727. in time

  1728. where we

  1729. realize

  1730. that it's

  1731. not about

  1732. our

  1733. performance

  1734. it's never

  1735. about our

  1736. performance

  1737. we can

  1738. never

  1739. perform

  1740. enough

  1741. that's

  1742. the bad

  1743. news

  1744. but the

  1745. good

  1746. news

  1747. is that

  1748. God

  1749. because

  1750. he loves

  1751. you

  1752. he sent

  1753. his son

  1754. to die

  1755. upon the

  1756. cross

  1757. and he

  1758. will do

  1759. everything

  1760. to make

  1761. you right

  1762. and that

  1763. when God

  1764. takes you

  1765. when he

  1766. takes your

  1767. hand in

  1768. his

  1769. when he

  1770. takes you

  1771. into his

  1772. life

  1773. when he

  1774. enters into

  1775. your life

  1776. your hand

  1777. is weak

  1778. your performance

  1779. will falter

  1780. there will

  1781. come times

  1782. you can't

  1783. perform at

  1784. all

  1785. you will

  1786. do the

  1787. opposite

  1788. of performance

  1789. you will

  1790. do terrible

  1791. things

  1792. but God

  1793. will never

  1794. let you

  1795. go

  1796. and he

  1797. wants us

  1798. to have

  1799. an assurance

  1800. that he

  1801. will never

  1802. let you

  1803. go

  1804. if I do

  1805. a terrible

  1806. job in

  1807. this church

  1808. and in

  1809. two years

  1810. there's only

  1811. three people

  1812. left in the

  1813. congregation

  1814. he will

  1815. never let

  1816. me go

  1817. if all

  1818. of a sudden

  1819. something

  1820. happens

  1821. and we're

  1822. doing five

  1823. services a

  1824. day and the

  1825. place is packed

  1826. out and there's

  1827. two thousand

  1828. on a Sunday

  1829. it doesn't make

  1830. any difference

  1831. to whether God

  1832. loves me or not

  1833. not about my

  1834. performance

  1835. God will never

  1836. let me go

  1837. and when we've

  1838. been gripped

  1839. when we've been

  1840. broken

  1841. if you notice

  1842. in all of those

  1843. images of the

  1844. olive tree

  1845. the only way

  1846. you get on

  1847. the olive tree

  1848. is if you're

  1849. broken

  1850. and grafted in

  1851. and for some

  1852. of us

  1853. when we realize

  1854. that it's all

  1855. about what God

  1856. does for us

  1857. it frees us

  1858. up to no

  1859. longer have to

  1860. be all about

  1861. our performance

  1862. it frees us up

  1863. to look at why

  1864. we aren't talking

  1865. to our parents

  1866. or what there is

  1867. in our past

  1868. or our hardness

  1869. of heart

  1870. or how we

  1871. project on God

  1872. it frees us up

  1873. to say

  1874. you know what

  1875. maybe I'm going

  1876. to share the

  1877. gospel with my

  1878. Jewish friend

  1879. because you know

  1880. what God says

  1881. Jewish people are

  1882. going to keep

  1883. becoming Christians

  1884. or you know what

  1885. maybe that person

  1886. that's really

  1887. really really

  1888. different from me

  1889. I don't know

  1890. they go to

  1891. McDonald's

  1892. or they have

  1893. you know

  1894. things that look

  1895. like they're about

  1896. you know

  1897. this big

  1898. in their ears

  1899. or they have

  1900. lots of tattoos

  1901. or they have

  1902. no tattoos

  1903. whatever it is

  1904. your culture

  1905. crossing your

  1906. culture

  1907. maybe I'll share

  1908. the gospel

  1909. with them

  1910. why

  1911. because I don't

  1912. know who God

  1913. I can try it

  1914. that grace

  1915. frees us up

  1916. that our lives

  1917. start to be

  1918. changed out of

  1919. gratitude

  1920. not out of

  1921. any sense of

  1922. accomplishment

  1923. and that our

  1924. gratitude we can

  1925. look within

  1926. we can give up

  1927. self-defensiveness

  1928. we can give up

  1929. trying to justify

  1930. ourselves

  1931. we can give up

  1932. trying to make

  1933. ourselves righteous

  1934. we can live

  1935. in gratitude

  1936. and be

  1937. live and ground

  1938. in gratitude

  1939. and live out of

  1940. promise

  1941. and we can try

  1942. and we can fail

  1943. and we can know

  1944. that nothing

  1945. will take us out

  1946. of God's hands

  1947. God wants us to

  1948. have assurance

  1949. not arrogance

  1950. he wants us to

  1951. have faith

  1952. not presumption

  1953. and God

  1954. even when he

  1955. starts to reveal

  1956. the depth

  1957. of our

  1958. presumption

  1959. and arrogance

  1960. it's only

  1961. so we can

  1962. call out to him

  1963. and receive his

  1964. grace

  1965. even if we

  1966. have lived

  1967. a life

  1968. of profound

  1969. presumption

  1970. religious

  1971. arrogant

  1972. presumption

  1973. he wants you

  1974. to stumble

  1975. over it

  1976. so you know

  1977. grace

  1978. please stand

  1979. you know

  1980. our big text

  1981. is

  1982. oh the depth

  1983. of the riches

  1984. and wisdom

  1985. and knowledge

  1986. of God

  1987. how unsearchable

  1988. are his judgment

  1989. and how inscrutable

  1990. his ways

  1991. for who has

  1992. known the mind

  1993. of the Lord

  1994. or who has

  1995. been his counselor

  1996. or who has

  1997. given a gift

  1998. to him

  1999. that he might

  2000. be repaid

  2001. for from him

  2002. and through him

  2003. and to him

  2004. are all things

  2005. to him be glory

  2006. forever

  2007. amen

2008. I mean do you know

2009. the God who is there

  2010. because the God

  2011. who is there

  2012. has revealed himself

2013. that he sent his son

2014. to die upon the cross

  2015. he who is rich

  2016. became poor

2017. so you could become rich

  2018. and the God

  2019. who is there

  2020. he has said

  2021. that he will act

  2022. in a way

  2023. that is wise

2024. it's not our human wisdom

  2025. it's his human wisdom

  2026. it's his God wisdom

  2027. that means that

  2028. Jesus is the means

  2029. by which we are

  2030. reconciled to God

  2031. and God knew

  2032. every single thing

  2033. there is to know

  2034. about you

  2035. and he's revealed

  2036. that he knows

  2037. everything about you

  2038. but he doesn't

  2039. turn back on you

  2040. and doesn't reject you

  2041. he died

  2042. he sent his son

2043. to die on the cross

  2044. knowing everything

  2045. there is to know

  2046. about you

2047. and still he loved you

  2048. and still he died

  2049. on the cross

2050. so you could be his

  2051. and when Jesus

  2052. dies on the cross

2053. he dies on the cross

  2054. it's an unbelievable

  2055. gift of riches

2056. we can never repay him

2057. we can never put him

  2058. in our debt

  2059. and this is just

  2060. how God is

  2061. we can never

2062. put him in our debt

  2063. absolutely never

  2064. no amount of

  2065. religious accomplishment

  2066. spiritual accomplishment

  2067. victimhood

  2068. ever puts him

  2069. in our debt

  2070. ever

  2071. all he does

  2072. is give

  2073. this is the God

  2074. who does exist

  2075. do you know him

  2076. do you know him

  2077. are you willing

  2078. to have your minds

  2079. purged by scripture

  2080. as you reflect upon

  2081. Jesus on the cross

2082. there is no better time

  2083. than this

2084. to call out to God

  2085. that you would be

  2086. a disciple of Jesus

  2087. gripped by the gospel

  2088. of grace

  2089. learning to live

  2090. for his glory

  2091. let's pray

  2092. father we thank you

2093. just to hear the sound

  2094. of children laughing

  2095. in the background

2096. and father we give you

  2097. thanks and praise

  2098. that you laugh

2099. and have joy over us

  2100. you don't laugh

  2101. at us stumbling

  2102. or falling

  2103. you don't want us

  2104. to fall irrevocably

  2105. and never get up

  2106. that you just

  2107. always offer grace

  2108. always offer grace

2109. so father we thank you

2110. that we do not have

  2111. to have a really

  2112. strong hand

2113. in a life of profound

  2114. religious performance

2115. but that when we put

2116. our hands in your hands

2117. that you never let us go

2118. you never let us go

2119. it's all about your power

  2120. not about ours

  2121. father we thank you

  2122. for this

  2123. father we ask that

  2124. your holy spirit

2125. would move in our lives

  2126. to make us disciples

  2127. of Jesus

  2128. gripped by this gospel

  2129. of grace

  2130. learning to live

  2131. for your glory

2132. that you would help us

  2133. father to die

  2134. to presumption

  2135. and die to arrogance

  2136. but to rest

  2137. in assurance

  2138. of grace

  2139. and your unfailing

  2140. character

  2141. goodness

  2142. and mercy

  2143. and this we ask

  2144. in Jesus' name

  2145. Amen
