  1. The book of Zephaniah, the Old Testament prophet Zephaniah.

  2. We have been spending a number of weeks in this little book.

  3. This whole book is written as a poem or as a song.

  4. What we're going to do this evening is I'll read all of chapter 3 again,

  5. but then we'll focus on words from verse 11 to verse 15.

  6. So Zephaniah chapter 3.

    Zephaniah 3 chapter mention

  7. Woe to the city of oppressors, rebellious and defiled.

  8. She obeys no one.

  9. She accepts no correction.

  10. She does not trust in the Lord.

  11. She does not draw near to her God.

  12. Her officials are roaring lions.

  13. Her rulers are evening wolves who leave nothing for the morning.

  14. Her prophets are arrogant.

  15. They are treacherous men.

  16. Her priests profane the sanctuary and do violence to the law.

  17. The Lord within her is righteous.

  18. He does no wrong.

  19. Morning by morning, he dispenses his justice.

  20. And every new day, he does not fail.

  21. Yet the unrighteous know no shame.

  22. I have cut off nations.

  23. Their strongholds are demolished.

  24. I have left their streets deserted with no one passing through.

  25. Their cities are destroyed.

  26. No one will be left.

  27. No one at all.

  28. I said to the city,

  29. Surely you will fear me and accept correction.

  30. Then her dwelling would not be cut off,

  31. nor all my punishments come upon her.

  32. But they were still eager to act corruptly in all they did.

  33. Therefore, wait for me, declares the Lord.

  34. For the day I will stand up to testify.

  35. I have decided to assemble the nations,

  36. to gather the kingdoms,

  37. and to pour out my wrath on them,

  38. all my fierce anger.

  39. The whole world will be consumed by the fire of my jealous anger.

  40. Then will I purify the lips of the peoples,

  41. that all of them may call on the name of the Lord,

  42. and serve him shoulder to shoulder.

  43. From beyond the rivers of Cush,

  44. my worshippers,

  45. my scattered people,

  46. will bring me offerings.

  47. On that day you will not be put to shame,

  48. for all the wrongs you have done to me.

  49. Because I will remove from this city,

  50. those who rejoice in their pride.

  51. Never again will you be haughty on my holy hill.

  52. But I will leave within you the meek and humble,

  53. who trust in the name of the Lord.

  54. The remnant of Israel will do no wrong.

  55. They will speak no lies,

  56. nor will deceit be found in their mouths.

  57. They will eat and lie down,

  58. and no one will make them afraid.

  59. Sing, O daughter of Zion.

  60. Shout aloud, O Israel.

  61. Be glad and rejoice with all your heart,

  62. O daughter of Jerusalem.

  63. The Lord has taken away your punishment.

  64. He has turned back your enemy.

  65. The Lord, the King of Israel, is with you.

  66. Never again will you fear any harm.

  67. On that day they will say to Jerusalem,

  68. Do not fear, O Zion.

  69. Do not let your hands hang limp.

  70. The Lord, your God, is with you.

  71. He is mighty to save.

  72. He will take great delight in you.

  73. He will quiet you with his love.

  74. He will rejoice over you with singing.

  75. The sorrows for the appointed feasts

  76. I will remove from you.

  77. They are a burden and a reproach to you.

  78. At that time I will deal with all who oppressed you.

  79. I will rescue the lame

  80. and gather those who have been scattered.

  81. I will give them praise and honor

  82. in every land where they were put to shame.

  83. At that time I will gather you.

  84. At that time I will bring you home.

  85. I will give you honor and praise

  86. among all the peoples of the earth

  87. when I restore your fortunes

  88. before your very eyes,

  89. says the Lord.

  90. Amen.

  91. Once again at the book of Zephaniah.

  92. Zephaniah's closing words

  93. are about fortunes being restored.

  94. So what I want to think about this evening

  95. is the promise of God

  96. to the city of Jerusalem

  97. of a change in fortunes

  98. that would come for them

  99. because of the grace of God.

  100. And to think how in the gospel of Jesus

  101. they were promised

  102. that same change of fortune.

  103. But let's begin here.

  104. Let's begin with two cities under siege.

  105. The first one,

  106. Stalingrad in Russia

  107. during the Second World War.

  108. So in 1942,

  109. Stalingrad had already

  110. been under German attack

  111. for over a year.

  112. So they were surrounded on all sides

  113. by the German army

  114. trying to make a march east.

  115. And the people within the city of Stalingrad,

  116. they were starving.

  117. The bombs were falling regularly.

  118. This was a suffering people.

  119. But then in the summer of 1942,

  120. the conductor of the Stalingrad Orchestra

  121. decided that what was left of the orchestra

  122. that hadn't been killed and fighting to date

  123. would perform a new symphony

  124. composed by Shostakovich.

  125. And so this battered and starving city

  126. and musicians that could hardly draw enough puff

  127. to get their instruments working

  128. worked together for a number of months

  129. until the 9th of August

  130. when they were due to perform this new symphony.

  131. So to make sure that there was peace

  132. for the performance,

  133. Russian planes flew over the city

  134. bombing the German areas around the city.

  135. And so they were free as a city

  136. to listen to this new symphony.

  137. It was a hugely significant moment for them

  138. in their effort to endure.

  139. For 18 months,

  140. they would still have to hang on

  141. until the Soviet army en masse would come

  142. and give them deliverance.

  143. But the city recognized

  144. in the music of Shostakovich

  145. and in the production of that symphony,

  146. that's a hard word to say, hope,

  147. the city endured

  148. because in part of this music

  149. that spoke courage into their bones.

  150. There's another city under siege

  151. in Zephaniah 3.

  152. And that's Jerusalem,

  153. the city of God,

  154. under siege

  155. because of the judgment of God.

  156. That they had so often turned their back on God,

  157. turning towards other gods

  158. that God had sent the nations.

  159. He's promising He's going to send the nations

  160. to surround,

  161. to bring judgment on them.

  162. So Jerusalem here in chapter 3

  163. is a city under siege.

  164. And so the question then is,

  165. where will hope for this city come from?

  166. That hope won't come from a symphony,

  167. but it will come from the song of the gospel.

  168. What we'll see this evening

  169. is that hope is promised,

  170. deliverance is promised

  171. from outside of themselves.

  172. A hope that will make them sing

  173. because they are being reminded

  174. of the gospel of God with us.

  175. Every Christmas we remind ourselves

  176. of one of the titles of Jesus,

  177. that He is Emmanuel,

  178. God with us.

  179. Well, that same promise is given

  180. to the city of Jerusalem.

  181. It's the same promise given to each one of us

  182. in the gospel,

  183. that in Jesus we can know God with us

  184. in our lives,

  185. even when we perhaps feel like

  186. we are under siege,

  187. under attack,

  188. experiencing all kinds of suffering.

  189. But before we get there,

  190. let's remind ourselves

  191. from the beginning of chapter 3,

  192. why is Jerusalem facing

  193. this promised judgment?

  194. So quick recap,

  195. it's been a few weeks

  196. since we've been in Zephaniah.

  197. The day of the Lord

  198. is a major theme in this book.

  199. The day of the Lord,

  200. God's people presumed

  201. it would mean salvation for them,

  202. but they're being warned

  203. against complacency.

  204. They're being told

  205. because of their rebellion,

  206. the day of the Lord

  207. will bring judgment.

  208. Judgment, chapter 1,

  209. judgment for Judah.

  210. And then in chapter 2,

  211. there's a break

  212. and they're told of judgment

  213. on the surrounding nations.

  214. But then in chapter 3,

  215. focus returns to God's city,

  216. to Jerusalem,

  217. and they're told judgment

  218. will fall on them.

  219. The day of the Lord

  220. in the first eight verses

  221. will come as judgment.

  222. So let's think about

  223. why that's the case.

  224. Look at the first two verses.

  225. There is an announcement

  226. of woe on this city

  227. for a number of reasons.

  228. We see them as lawbreakers.

  229. We see them as rebels.

  230. We see them as defiled

  231. and religiously unclean before God.

  232. We see them in verse 2

  233. as disobedient towards God,

  234. untrusting of God.

  235. We see them deliberately

  236. walking away from God

  237. instead of drawing near.

  238. In verses 3 to 5,

  239. there is a contrast

  240. presented for us.

  241. In verse 5,

  242. we're introduced to the Lord

  243. within the city,

  244. the Lord with them,

  245. who is righteous,

  246. who performs in ways

  247. that are just

  248. and who seeks righteousness.

  249. So you've got the righteous Lord,

  250. but then all around that,

  251. you have the unrighteous leaders

  252. of the people,

  253. whether that's the officials

  254. of verse 3,

  255. whether that's the prophets

  256. and the priests

  257. of verse 4,

  258. whether it's the religious

  259. or political and moral

  260. and social leaders,

  261. all of them

  262. are acting in ways

  263. that are unrighteous.

  264. That's why judgment will come.

  265. In verses 6 and 7,

  266. Zephaniah is sent

  267. to remind them

  268. of what God has been doing

  269. in the surrounding area.

  270. God has begun

  271. to bring about judgment

  272. on the surrounding nations.

  273. And that was intended

  274. to be a wake-up call.

  275. Verse 7,

  276. I said to the city,

  277. surely you will fear me

  278. and accept correction,

  279. having cut off nations

  280. in verse 6.

  281. But they don't.

  282. They don't hear those warnings.

  283. They don't respond

  284. to the judgment of God.

  285. They remain complacent.

  286. That they'll be okay

  287. because they're part of Israel.

  288. So that in verse 8,

  289. they're told to wait

  290. for the Lord.

  291. God's judgment would come.

  292. God within the city

  293. will now be God against the city

  294. because of their rebellion.

  295. What has Jerusalem got to do

  296. with you and me?

  297. Well, here in this book,

  298. we have God,

  299. the Creator King,

  300. saying,

  301. I am the Lord with you.

  302. And this same God

  303. who says,

  304. I am the Lord with you,

  305. is the same God

  306. who sends Jesus

  307. to be our Emmanuel.

  308. The same Jesus

  309. who is sent to be

  310. our suffering servant.

  311. But just as the people

  312. in Zephaniah's day,

  313. so by nature,

  314. we say to God,

  315. we don't want you

  316. and we don't want

  317. your salvation.

  318. We want to go our own way,

  319. make our own choices.

  320. That just as in Zephaniah's day,

  321. they are not alone

  322. in establishing idols

  323. for themselves.

  324. placing someone

  325. or something higher

  326. than God

  327. in terms of significance

  328. and worship.

  329. All of us stand

  330. in covenant relationship

  331. with God,

  332. but all of us,

  333. because of our disobedience,

  334. have broken that covenant

  335. just as they did.

  336. And in our daily decisions,

  337. just as in Zephaniah's day,

  338. all too often,

  339. we are rejecting

  340. God as king

  341. and as Lord

  342. because we would have

  343. that place instead.

  344. So one of the things

  345. that the Old Testament

  346. prophets do for us,

  347. and Zephaniah certainly

  348. does this for us,

  349. is it reminds us,

  350. they remind us

  351. of the heart of sin.

  352. They remind us of the sin

  353. in our human hearts.

  354. J.C. Ryle,

  355. a Bible teacher

  356. from a previous generation

  357. said,

  358. a right knowledge of sin

  359. lies at the root

  360. of all saving Christianity.

  361. When we lose sight

  362. of our sin

  363. and rebellion

  364. against God,

  365. when sin is something

  366. that's treated

  367. as no big deal,

  368. when we look at ourselves

  369. as fundamentally good

  370. and right,

  371. and surely,

  372. just by virtue

  373. of being people,

  374. we're in a good relationship

  375. with God,

  376. then the message

  377. of the Bible,

  378. it doesn't come to us

  379. with any urgency.

  380. The message

  381. that Jesus died

  382. for sinners

  383. makes no sense

  384. if we don't understand

  385. ourselves to be

  386. in that place.

  387. It was John Newton

  388. who famously sang

  389. about amazing grace,

  390. but we will only sing

  391. that from our hearts

  392. when we understand

  393. it saves a wretch

  394. like me.

  395. And so,

  396. the message

  397. against Jerusalem

  398. is a message

  399. that we need

  400. to pay attention to

  401. because it reveals

  402. the sin

  403. that lies within.

  404. But then,

  405. the wonderful message

  406. of Zephaniah

  407. also speaks

  408. so much gospel hope

  409. to us.

  410. Remember that theme

  411. towards the end

  412. of chapter three

  413. of fortunes

  414. being restored.

  415. Let's look together

  416. at how these images

  417. of transformation

  418. are brought

  419. from Zephaniah

  420. to this people

  421. standing under

  422. God's judgment.

  423. First of all,

  424. shame

  425. will be

  426. removed.

  427. Look at verse 11.

  428. On that day,

  429. you will not

  430. be put to shame

  431. for all the wrongs

  432. you have done

  433. to me.

  434. For Jerusalem,

  435. they had done

  436. shameful things.

  437. Chapter one

  438. and chapter three

  439. are a catalogue

  440. of people

  441. who should have

  442. been following

  443. God's way,

  444. God's law,

  445. mistreating others

  446. and dishonoring God

  447. in false worship.

  448. They had done

  449. shameful things

  450. and because

  451. of that,

  452. they have brought

  453. shame on themselves.

  454. They have become

  455. unclean,

  456. defiled,

  457. as we're told

  458. in verse one.

  459. Sin had polluted

  460. them.

  461. There is this

  462. ugly stain

  463. on the city

  464. and there is

  465. no soap

  466. to deal with

  467. that disgrace

  468. that they possess

  469. in and of

  470. themselves.

  471. So Zephaniah

  472. has been sent

  473. to show

  474. them their shame,

  475. to show

  476. how they have

  477. treated,

  478. how they have

  479. mistreated

  480. God,

  481. that they would

  482. feel the sense

  483. of that,

  484. the weight

  485. of that,

  486. but also

  487. then that they

  488. would see

  489. God's grace

  490. as good news.

  491. When these

  492. city streets

  493. would be washed

  494. clean of shame,

  495. when their

  496. shameful past

  497. would be

  498. forgotten,

  499. when this

  500. God who

  501. they have

  502. dishonored

  503. would be

  504. willing to

  505. associate

  506. with them.

  507. Look at the

  508. end of verse

  509. 13,

  510. or verse

  511. 13,

  512. the remnant

  513. of Israel

  514. will do

  515. no wrong,

  516. they will

  517. speak no

  518. lies,

  519. nor will

  520. deceit be

  521. found in

  522. their mouths,

  523. they will

  524. eat and

  525. lie down,

  526. and no one

  527. will make

  528. them afraid.

  529. That's a

  530. picture of

  531. God as

  532. their shepherd,

  533. God in

  534. the midst

  535. of them

  536. to care

  537. for them,

  538. willing to

  539. associate

  540. with those

  541. who will

  542. humble

  543. themselves,

  544. who will

  545. acknowledge

  546. their shame,

  547. and who will

  548. trust once

  549. again in the

  550. Lord,

  551. they will

  552. find this

  553. shepherd king

  554. who would

  555. honor them

  556. and who

  557. would care

  558. for them.

  559. And we

  560. see these

  561. values again

  562. in the coming

  563. of Jesus.

  564. This gospel

  565. of hope,

  566. this good

  567. news is

  568. brought by

  569. Jesus,

  570. that instead

  571. of shame,

  572. we can

  573. receive

  574. honor.

  575. Perhaps we

  576. see it most

  577. strikingly in

  578. the conversation

  579. that Jesus

  580. has with a

  581. Samaritan

  582. woman in

  583. John chapter

    John 4 chapter mention

  584. 4.

  585. This is a

  586. lady who

  587. lives with

  588. very public

  589. shame and

  590. disgrace because

  591. she has had

  592. five husbands

  593. and now she's

  594. living with

  595. somebody who

  596. she's not

  597. married to.

  598. And in this

  599. religious society

  600. in which they

  601. live, this

  602. brought shame

  603. and disgrace

  604. on her.

  605. But Jesus

  606. comes and

  607. Jesus is

  608. willing to

  609. associate with

  610. her.

  611. Jesus in

  612. love talks

  613. with her,

  614. offers himself

  615. as living

  616. water,

  617. lovingly

  618. shows her

  619. her sin

  620. and her

  621. shame so

  622. that he

  623. might bring

  624. healing.

  625. Shame

  626. turns to

  627. honor when

  628. we encounter

  629. the Lord

  630. Jesus.

  631. And that's

  632. such a

  633. powerful truth

  634. of the

  635. gospel because

  636. shame can

  637. be such a

  638. heavy burden.

  639. Many

  640. psychologists

  641. would reckon

  642. that shame

  643. is actually a

  644. heavier thing

  645. to deal

  646. with than

  647. guilt in

  648. terms of

  649. its

  650. psychological

  651. damage.

  652. Shame can

  653. crush us,

  654. leaving us

  655. feeling worthless,

  656. unclean,

  657. and dirty.

  658. mercy.

  659. But here

  660. in Jesus

  661. we can

  662. find hope.

  663. Here

  664. through

  665. Jesus

  666. we can

  667. sing as

  668. those who

  669. have found

  670. honor to

  671. replace

  672. shame.

  673. Because

  674. Jesus

  675. will come

  676. into the

  677. world in

  678. order to

  679. bear our

  680. shame on

  681. the cross.

  682. Jesus

  683. will take

  684. on himself

  685. the pollution

  686. of sin

  687. and he

  688. will be

  689. punished

  690. for that.

  691. He will

  692. bear the

  693. shame and

  694. disgrace

  695. so that we

  696. might not.

  697. Jesus

  698. will face

  699. the shame

  700. of being

  701. mocked

  702. and rejected

  703. so that you

  704. and I

  705. can be

  706. welcomed.

  707. Jesus

  708. will pay

  709. the ultimate

  710. sacrifice

  711. giving his

  712. life for

  713. us so

  714. that we

  715. might know

  716. the honor

  717. of being

  718. children of

  719. God.

  720. In the

  721. gospel we

  722. discover that

  723. Jesus secures

  724. our honor

  725. before God

  726. because he

  727. identifies with

  728. us in our

  729. sin and our

  730. shame and he

  731. gives us a

  732. new identity

  733. so that we

  734. can live as

  735. children of

  736. God.

  737. That Samaritan

  738. woman who

  739. had known

  740. such disgrace

  741. when she

  742. met Jesus

  743. as she

  744. went back

  745. to her

  746. village and

  747. she said

  748. come see a

  749. man who

  750. told me

  751. everything I

  752. ever did.

  753. Could this

  754. be the

  755. Christ?

  756. Those awful

  757. things of her

  758. past that

  759. has served to

  760. condemn and

  761. crush now

  762. become pointers

  763. to the good

  764. news that

  765. Jesus offers

  766. to anyone

  767. that is hope

  768. beyond shame

  769. in knowing

  770. Jesus.

  771. But there's

  772. more gospel

  773. hope, there's

  774. more transformation

  775. promised by

  776. God through

  777. Zephaniah here.

  778. There is the

  779. promise of

  780. punishment that

  781. will be removed.

  782. Verse 14 and

  783. 15.

  784. Sing, O

  785. daughter of

  786. Zion, shout

  787. aloud, O

  788. Israel.

  789. Be glad and

  790. rejoice with all

  791. your heart, O

  792. daughter of

  793. Jerusalem, the

  794. Lord has

  795. taken away

  796. your punishment.

  797. Here is a

  798. truth to

  799. make our

  800. hearts sing.

  801. The Lord, the

  802. personal covenant

  803. God, the

  804. God who has

  805. entered into a

  806. relationship with

  807. his people, who

  808. has always proved

  809. faithful to his

  810. people, offers

  811. hope to those

  812. who have been

  813. faithless to

  814. him.

  815. there has

  816. been rebellion

  817. against the

  818. king, as

  819. we've seen all

  820. through Zephaniah.

  821. There has been

  822. spiritual adultery

  823. committed against

  824. God, the

  825. faithful husband,

  826. as we've seen

  827. through Zephaniah.

  828. Morally, we've

  829. seen that rebellion

  830. and unfaithfulness

  831. in their lies,

  832. in their

  833. corruption, in

  834. their exploitation,

  835. in their pride,

  836. in their greed.

  837. Spiritually, we see

  838. it in their false

  839. worship, in their

  840. mixed worship, in

  841. their misplaced

  842. trust, and in

  843. their misplaced

  844. love.

  845. And yet,

  846. although their

  847. sins are many,

  848. God's mercy is

  849. more.

  850. Maybe you know

  851. the parable, the

  852. story that Jesus

  853. told.

  854. He told the story

  855. once of a king

  856. who decided it was

  857. time to settle up

  858. with those who had

  859. got in debt with

  860. him.

  861. And one man was

  862. brought before the

  863. king, and he had a

  864. great mountain of

  865. debt that he could

  866. never pay off.

  867. So he was unable to

  868. pay it, and the king

  869. said, well, because of

  870. that, you need to go

  871. to prison, you and

  872. your family.

  873. But then the man

  874. falls on his face and

  875. seeks mercy, and that

  876. king instantly forgives

  877. and cancels the debt.

  878. Instead of punishment,

  879. mercy.

  880. How can anyone sing

  881. like Zephaniah calls the

  882. people of God to sing

  883. when they've just been

  884. told this catalog of

  885. sin and disobedience that

  886. means they are guilty

  887. before God?

  888. Well, Zephaniah

  889. proclaims here that

  890. there is a taking

  891. away of punishment,

  892. but it's with the

  893. coming of Jesus that

  894. that proclamation is

  895. then explained to us.

  896. How is this possible?

  897. Well, guilt is removed

  898. by sacrifice.

  899. It's the picture that we

  900. have in the Old

  901. Testament.

  902. But that was a pointer

  903. to the coming of Jesus.

  904. Jesus, who on the cross

  905. will become that perfect

  906. sacrifice to make

  907. atonement for the sins

  908. of his people, to take

  909. on himself the punishment

  910. that you and I deserve

  911. so that we might be free.

  912. One of the things that

  913. Zephaniah shows us clearly

  914. and the Bible teaches us

  915. is that God is just.

  916. God must deal with sin

  917. in order for him to be

  918. holy and good.

  919. He cannot simply turn a

  920. blind eye to sin.

  921. He cannot sweep sin

  922. under the rug.

  923. But God is also

  924. merciful and gracious.

  925. And he has provided a way

  926. of forgiveness through the

  927. sending of his own son,

  928. Jesus, to take sin

  929. and its penalty.

  930. And because Jesus has

  931. fully satisfied God's

  932. justice against our sin,

  933. God can justly forgive

  934. those who will trust in Jesus.

  935. So Jesus becomes God with us

  936. in order to be the Savior for us

  937. so that we can sing,

  938. so that we can sing of a

  939. punishment that's been removed.

  940. We can sing,

  941. no condemnation,

  942. now I dread,

  943. because Jesus and all in him

  944. is mine.

  945. One last picture

  946. of transformed fortunes.

  947. Peace will be restored.

  948. Verse 15,

  949. the Lord has taken away

  950. your punishment.

  951. He has turned back

  952. your enemy.

  953. So remember that picture,

  954. Jerusalem,

  955. the city under siege

  956. because of the judgment

  957. of God.

  958. Well, here is how it resolves.

  959. The Lord will act

  960. to deliver his people

  961. from their enemies.

  962. The Lord,

  963. the King of Israel,

  964. is with you.

  965. Never again will you fear

  966. any harm.

  967. God is with his people

  968. now to fight for them

  969. and for their salvation.

  970. We have this remarkable truth

  971. side by side

  972. that Jerusalem had chosen

  973. to become God's enemy,

  974. but God in his grace

  975. chooses to be a savior

  976. for his people.

  977. God chooses to show grace,

  978. grace that will bring them peace,

  979. grace that will reconcile

  980. them to God,

  981. grace that will turn enemies

  982. back into friends

  983. once again.

  984. made me think of Jesus

  985. meeting with Saul

  986. on the Damascus road.

  987. Saul,

  988. who was an extremely

  989. religious man,

  990. but Saul who had decided

  991. that Jesus

  992. was not telling the truth

  993. about himself,

  994. that he wasn't the son of God,

  995. that Jesus and his church

  996. should be destroyed.

  997. Well,

  998. Jesus comes

  999. and seeks out

  1000. this enemy,

  1001. the risen Lord Jesus

  1002. comes to him

  1003. and confronts him

  1004. with his persecution

  1005. of the church,

  1006. converts him,

1007. brings him into God's kingdom

  1008. and calls this enemy

  1009. into service

  1010. in this great act

  1011. of reconciliation

  1012. on the Damascus road.

  1013. And that's what God

  1014. through Jesus does

  1015. for anyone

  1016. who puts their trust

  1017. in him.

  1018. Instead of us

  1019. being at war

  1020. with God,

  1021. God establishes

  1022. peace

  1023. between us

  1024. and our God.

  1025. So that instead

  1026. of living with that

  1027. fear of judgment,

  1028. when we're trusting

  1029. in Jesus,

  1030. we can know

  1031. his welcome.

  1032. back in Stalingrad,

  1033. decades after

  1034. the siege had ended,

  1035. survivors would still

  1036. gather together

  1037. in different pockets

  1038. and they would listen

1039. to that piece of music

  1040. from Shostakovich.

  1041. And by then,

1042. it had been a reminder

  1043. of how that hope

  1044. that they had

  1045. back in 42

  1046. had then become

  1047. reality.

  1048. So that music

  1049. was a message

  1050. for them

  1051. of hope

  1052. becoming victory.

  1053. In verse 14,

  1054. we have the people

  1055. of God

  1056. called to sing.

  1057. What do we sing?

  1058. What do we need

  1059. to sing?

  1060. What we sing

  1061. is how we talk

  1062. to ourselves

  1063. so often.

  1064. Our greatest need

  1065. is to make

  1066. this wonderful gospel

  1067. the soundtrack

  1068. to our lives.

  1069. to sing,

  1070. to remind ourselves

  1071. of what Jesus

  1072. has done

  1073. for us.

  1074. That Jesus

  1075. has come

  1076. to turn our shame

  1077. to honor.

  1078. That Jesus

  1079. has come

  1080. to take

  1081. our punishment

  1082. so we might receive

  1083. his reward.

  1084. Jesus has come

  1085. to end

  1086. that warfare

  1087. with God

  1088. and to bring

  1089. us peace

  1090. through

  1091. his blood.

  1092. He has come

  1093. to be God

  1094. with us,

  1095. to be that

  1096. Savior

  1097. for us

  1098. so that we

  1099. might sing.

  1100. I wonder,

  1101. does the song

  1102. of the gospel

  1103. give us joy?

  1104. Does it give us

  1105. peace?

  1106. Does it help us

  1107. to remember

  1108. that honor

  1109. that we have

  1110. as the people

  1111. of God?

  1112. Jesus

  1113. is

  1114. to make

  1115. a

  1116. sense

  1117. of

  1118. sharing

  1119. with rith

  1120. Father

  1121. and

  1122. to be

  1123. ,

  1124. to be

  1125. var

  1126. thi

  1127. is

  1128. for

  1129. the

  1130. st

  1131. to be
