  1. From Luke chapter 23, verse 46, then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, Father,

    Luke 23:46

  2. into your hands I commit my spirit.

  3. Now, this seems like a pretty simple and natural thing to do.

  4. You're at the end of your life, and you've lived for God, and here you are at your last breath,

  5. and you say, Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.

  6. It seems pretty simple, and for me, I looked at it and figured this is the natural thing to do.

  7. You're about to go on to what we call the next life, to be with God, into his presence.

  8. And this is actually taken from a prayer that the Jewish people would pray, I believe, every day in the evening.

  9. It's taken from Psalm 31.

  10. So I will turn to Psalm 31 and read that for you.

  11. So the first five verses.

  12. Psalm 31, verse 46, then Jesus, calling out with a prayer.

  13. In you, O Lord, do I take refuge.

  14. Let me never be put to shame.

  15. In your righteousness, deliver me.

  16. Incline your ear to me.

  17. Rescue me speedily.

  18. Be a rock of refuge for me, a strong fortress to save me.

  19. For you are my rock and my fortress, and for your name's sake, you lead me and guide me.

  20. You take me out of the net they have hidden for me, for you are my refuge.

  21. Into your hand I commit my spirit.

  22. You have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God.

  23. Now this is a prayer that they would pray because they would be the people of God,

  24. and they would be the people who would follow God the best that they know how,

  25. and their prayer was as such because people would be persecuting them.

  26. And it's been throughout the course of history, people have persecuted the Jewish people.

  27. And now here how Jesus is on the cross.

  28. He came to his own people, and they did not accept him.

  29. They did not receive him.

  30. And in fact, they crucified him.

  31. And Jesus is crying out to God as his refuge, as the God who is faithful,

  32. who will deliver him from his enemies, and he will restore him.

  33. And all these beautiful things.

  34. And in looking at this, this kind of flavors this last statement that Jesus says,

  35. I commit my spirit into your hands.

  36. And I wonder why does Jesus say that?

  37. Jesus, who was called the Son of God in his baptism in Luke chapter 3,

    Luke 3 chapter mention

  38. everyone heard the voice of God so audibly when God said,

  39. this is my Son with whom I am well pleased.

  40. And Jesus, who his food was doing the will of God,

  41. and doing the will of God led him to this cross,

  42. this cross that brought much shame,

  43. where he was hung there completely naked with nails through his feet,

  44. through his hands.

  45. Throughout his ministry, he was showing to the people that he was the Son of God,

  46. the Messiah.

  47. And there he was crucified.

  48. And just lived through utter shame.

  49. And he is calling out to God and giving his spirit into this Father who,

  50. in his sovereignty, allowed this to happen.

  51. I remember once when I was in high school, I went skiing out for the first time.

  52. And it was the last time I skied.

  53. And I'll tell you why.

  54. I was just following some friends.

  55. And one of my good friends that I trusted at the time,

  56. he was a professional skier.

  57. He was very young, but he was very talented.

  58. And we were at the top of this black diamond ski hill.

  59. And I asked him, do you think I can do this?

  60. And he said, of course, this is easy.

  61. And so I went down.

  62. And that was my first time, I'm reminding you.

  63. I was down the whole hill.

  64. My skis were just pointed because that was the only thing I knew what to do.

  65. And I just went really, really fast.

  66. Almost died.

  67. Almost brought a few people with me.

  68. And my trust in this friend was completely severed.

  69. I did not trust him anymore.

  70. And looking at this text and looking at the story of Jesus going through this passion

  71. and going to the cross,

  72. I wonder how did he, in his very last words,

  73. give his spirit to God who allowed him to go through this.

  74. I think as Lisa read just earlier in Hebrews,

  75. we see that the joy that was set before Jesus,

  76. that was one of the things that led him to bear the cross

  77. and bear the pain and the suffering.

  78. And even the separation, as we see in Luke 23,

  79. in this very same context,

  80. we see that the sun, the light of the sun was completely stopped

  81. and there was darkness over the land for three hours.

  82. And now we see that Jesus, who is the light of the world,

  83. is separated from God.

  84. And he even asks the question,

  85. why have you forsaken me?

  86. And yet his last statement

  87. is that he gives his spirit into God's hands.

  88. So Jesus, right before he said this statement,

  89. the veil was torn.

  90. And this reveals two things to us,

  91. that Jesus, his identity and his mission,

  92. his identity that Jesus was the Lamb of God

  93. who was to come to save the people from their sins.

  94. And his mission was to be the priest,

  95. the priest that would intercede between the people,

  96. mankind who is so sinful and separated from God.

  97. And he would bring these people

  98. and usher them into the kingdom of God.

  99. And by separating this veil,

  100. he made the way for the people.

  101. And this is one of the things

  102. that really led Jesus to endure the pain

  103. and the suffering on the cross.

  104. And that also that with his priestly ministry,

  105. that he would offer sacrifice.

  106. And this sacrifice was himself.

  107. And Jesus dying on the cross

  108. was not the end of this story.

  109. In fact, let me read to you the words

  110. in Philippians chapter 2,

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  111. starting at verse 5,

  112. or 6 rather.

  113. Who though he was in the form of God,

  114. did not count equality with God,

  115. a thing to be grasped,

  116. but emptied himself by taking the form of a servant,

  117. being born in the likeness of men,

  118. and being found in human form,

  119. he humbled himself by becoming obedient

  120. to the point of death,

  121. even death on a cross.

  122. Therefore God has exalted him

  123. and bestowed on him the name

  124. that is above every name,

  125. so that at the name of Jesus

  126. every knee should bow,

  127. in heaven and on earth

  128. and under the earth,

  129. and every tongue confess

  130. that Jesus Christ is Lord

  131. to the glory of God the Father.

  132. Now this is a beautiful statement,

  133. and it kind of leads us

  134. from this statement that Jesus says

  135. that into the hands of his Father

  136. he commits his spirit,

  137. his person,

  138. so that he trusts God

  139. to the point where God

  140. exalts him to be

  141. the king that is above

  142. every other king on earth,

  143. the Lord of lords,

  144. and now the name that is above

  145. every name.

  146. And this is the invitation

  147. of Jesus today.

  148. If you don't know Jesus,

  149. he is one who trusted God the Father

  150. so much as to go through the suffering,

  151. and maybe you are going through

  152. suffering and pain,

  153. and Jesus endured it

  154. so that you can know the Father

  155. like he did,

  156. know him so well

  157. that even in the midst

  158. of his suffering,

  159. that God is still God,

  160. still enthroned,

  161. and that he has a purpose for it,

  162. and that his purpose for Jesus

  163. at that time was to be glorified,

  164. and for us is that we may know Jesus

  165. and that we may know God

  166. through Jesus,

  167. who is now the name above all names.

  168. And that was true then

  169. and is true today,

  170. and it will be true forever.

  171. I invite you to stand

  172. as a minute of silence for this word.

  173. Father, every morning when we wake,

  174. we ask that you would help us

  175. to commit ourselves

  176. into your hands for that day.

  177. Father, as we lay ourselves

  178. down at night to sleep,

  179. we ask that you would help us

  180. to commit ourselves

  181. into your hands.

  182. As we do simple

  183. or difficult things

  184. throughout the day,

  185. help us, Father,

  186. to remember Jesus

  187. and commit ourselves

  188. into your hands.

  189. At the hour of our death,

  190. deliver us from fear.

  191. Make us disciples of Jesus

  192. who are gripped by the gospel,

  193. living for your glory,

  194. and help us, Father,

  195. to commit ourselves

  196. into your hands.

  197. This we ask in the name of Jesus,

  198. your Son and our Savior.

  199. Here.
