  1. in the Old Testament, first of all, in Isaiah chapter 43.

    Isaiah 43 chapter mention

  2. Isaiah chapter 43, and we're reading there verses 1 to 13.

    Isaiah 43 chapter mention

  3. You'll find this on page 728 in the Bible that's there in front of you.

  4. But now this is what the Lord says.

  5. He who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel,

  6. fear not, for I have redeemed you.

  7. I have summoned you by name, you are mine.

  8. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you.

  9. And when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.

  10. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned.

  11. The flames will not set you ablaze.

  12. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.

  13. I give Egypt for your ransom, Cush and Seba in your stead,

  14. since you are precious and honored in my sight.

  15. And because I love you, I will give men in exchange for you

  16. and people in exchange for your life.

  17. Do not be afraid, for I am with you.

  18. I will bring your children from the east and gather you from the west.

  19. I will say to the north, give them up, and to the south, do not hold them back.

  20. Bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the ends of the earth,

  21. everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory,

  22. whom I formed and made.

  23. Lead out those who have eyes but are blind,

  24. who have ears but are deaf.

  25. All the nations gather together and the peoples assemble.

  26. Which of them foretold this and proclaimed to us the former things?

  27. Let them bring in their witness to prove they are right,

  28. so that others may hear and say it is true.

  29. You are my witnesses, declares the Lord,

  30. and my servant whom I have chosen,

  31. so that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he.

  32. Before me no God was formed, nor will there be one after me.

  33. I, even I, am the Lord,

  34. and apart from me there is no Savior.

  35. I have revealed and saved and proclaimed,

  36. I am not some foreign God among you.

  37. You are my witnesses, declares the Lord,

  38. that I am God.

  39. Yes, and from ancient days I am he.

  40. No one can deliver out of my hand.

  41. When I act, who can reverse it?

  42. And then we'll read a short passage in the New Testament

  43. in Matthew's Gospel,

  44. and we're reading there in chapter 14.

  45. Matthew chapter 14 from verse 22,

    Matthew 14 chapter mention

  46. page 981, chapter 14, verse 22.

  47. Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat

  48. and go on ahead of him to the other side

  49. while he dismissed the crowd.

  50. After he had dismissed them,

  51. he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.

  52. When evening came, he was there alone,

  53. but the boat was already a considerable distance from land

  54. buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.

  55. During the fourth watch of the night,

  56. Jesus went out to them,

  57. walking on the lake.

  58. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake,

  59. they were terrified.

  60. It's a ghost, they said,

  61. and cried out in fear.

  62. But Jesus immediately said to them,

  63. Take courage, it is I.

  64. Don't be afraid.

  65. Lord, if it's you, Peter replied,

  66. tell me to come to you on the water.

  67. Come, he said.

  68. Then Peter got down out of the boat,

  69. walked on the water,

  70. and came towards Jesus.

  71. But when he saw the wind,

  72. he was afraid,

  73. and beginning to sink,

  74. cried out,

  75. Lord, save me.

  76. Immediately Jesus reached out his hand

  77. and caught him.

  78. You of little faith, he said.

  79. Why did you doubt?

  80. And when they climbed into the boat,

  81. the wind died down.

  82. Then those who were in the boat worshipped him,

  83. saying,

  84. Truly, you are the Son of God.

  85. When they had crossed over,

  86. they landed at Gennesaret.

  87. And when the men of that place recognized Jesus,

  88. they sent word to all the surrounding country.

  89. People brought all their sick to him

  90. and begged him to let the sick

  91. just touch the edge of his cloak,

  92. and all who touched him were healed.

  93. May God bless those readings of his own word to us.

  94. That psalm that we've just been singing from,

  95. but turning to it in the Old Testament,

  96. in the book of Psalms,

  97. you'll find this on page 555.

  98. And particularly words that we'll find in verse 4.

  99. Psalm 23, verse 4.

    Psalms 23:4

  100. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

  101. I will fear no evil, for you are with me.

  102. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

  103. And especially the words there,

  104. I will fear no evil, for you are with me.

  105. One of the most beautiful and powerful lines

  106. in some of the carols we've been singing over past weeks

  107. is the line in O little town of Bethlehem,

  108. the hopes and fears of all the years

  109. are met in thee tonight.

  110. As we stand at the beginning of a new year

  111. and a new decade,

  112. these words resonate with us.

  113. We may have high hopes for the coming year,

  114. but we may also have crushing fears.

  115. There were certainly hopes and fears in Israel

  116. that night that Jesus was born.

  117. Hopes based on promises of a glorious future

  118. with the coming of the Messiah,

  119. but fears that the evil powers of the world,

  120. of Herod and of Rome,

  121. would crush these hopes.

  122. And today it seems so often

  123. that fears outweigh hopes.

  124. Franklin D. Roosevelt,

  125. who was president of the USA,

  126. in his message to Congress in January 1941,

  127. spoke of four essential human freedoms.

  128. Freedom of speech,

  129. freedom of worship,

  130. freedom from want,

  131. and freedom from fear.

  132. All of them seem just as far off now

  133. as they were in 1941,

  134. but particularly freedom from fear.

  135. We're beset with fear in the political world.

  136. What will Brexit do to our economy?

  137. Is there a new war brewing in the Middle East

  138. with renewed tensions between the USA and Iran?

  139. We're beset with fear about the environment.

  140. Greta Thunberg,

  141. the 17-year-old Swedish activist,

  142. has said,

  143. people are suffering,

  144. people are dying,

  145. entire ecosystems are collapsing.

  146. We hear statements like,

  147. we have 10 years to save the planet,

  148. or the earth is burning.

  149. And seeing what is happening in Australia,

  150. it's easy to believe that.

  151. But of course,

  152. there is a certain hysteria around about it.

  153. Now, no doubt,

  154. fear can be a motivating factor

  155. to make necessary change,

  156. but it can also be

  157. an overwhelming and enervating thing.

  158. The prophecies of doom

  159. can too easily become self-fulfilling.

  160. The task can seem too massive,

  161. the obstacles too great,

  162. human attitudes too intractable.

  163. I remember a similar kind of fear

  164. in the 1960s about nuclear destruction,

  165. particularly at the time

  166. of the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962.

  167. The Soviet Union was going to install

  168. nuclear missiles in Cuba,

  169. threatening the USA.

  170. People felt that the world was teetering

  171. on the brink of nuclear catastrophe.

  172. Bob Dylan wrote his famous song,

  173. A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall,

  174. each line of which he said

  175. was the title of a new song,

  176. but he felt he had no time to write them.

  177. Around the same time,

  178. he wrote Masters of War.

  179. You've thrown the worst fear

  180. that can ever be hurled,

  181. fear to bring children into the world.

  182. For threatening my baby,

  183. unborn and unnamed,

  184. you ain't worth the blood

  185. that runs in your veins.

  186. Martin Luther King in 1963 said,

  187. we have genuflected before the god of science,

  188. only to find that it has given us

  189. the atomic bomb,

  190. producing fears and anxieties

  191. that science can never mitigate.

  192. The word that sums up all this today

  193. is the word angst,

  194. a feeling of dread.

  195. It's a Danish word,

  196. and also found,

  197. I believe,

  198. in Norwegian,

  199. Dutch,

  200. and German.

  201. And it came to prominence

  202. first in the writings

  203. of the 19th century

  204. Danish philosopher

  205. and theologian,

  206. Soren Kierkegaard.

  207. He used it

  208. of the terrifying anxiety

  209. in the face

  210. of human freedom of choice.

  211. And it was developed

  212. in various ways

  213. by existentialist philosophers

  214. after him.

  215. Of course,

  216. in addition to fears

  217. about the future

  218. of society and the world,

  219. we also have

  220. more personal fears.

  221. Fears about the consequences

  222. of choices

  223. we have made in the past

  224. or we may make

  225. in the future.

  226. And fears about the impact

  227. of other people's choices

  228. on us.

  229. We have hopes

  230. for the future

  231. for ourselves

  232. and our families,

  233. but these can be blighted

  234. by our fears.

  235. Fears that what we have

  236. said or done

  237. in the past

  238. may come back

  239. to haunt us

  240. or fears

  241. that we will not

  242. be able to cope

  243. with what life

  244. throws at us

  245. in the future.

  246. We may make

  247. New Year's resolutions

  248. to drink less

  249. or eat less

  250. or exercise more

  251. or overcome

  252. some form

  253. of addictive behavior

  254. or turn over

  255. some new leaf

  256. in some way.

  257. But we fear

  258. we may not be able

  259. to overcome temptation.

  260. As Christians,

  261. we may have fears

  262. that we may not

  263. be able to live up

  264. to our Christian profession

  265. or that the troubles

  266. we may face

  267. may undermine

  268. our faith.

  269. We can also have faith

  270. about evil

  271. in the world around us

  272. for ourselves,

  273. our children,

  274. and our grandchildren,

  275. increasing levels

  276. of violence

  277. and sexual crime,

  278. gender confusion,

  279. poverty,

  280. and homelessness,

  281. the general loss

  282. of morality

  283. and integrity

  284. in public life.

  285. Plus,

  286. we may have fears

  287. concerning the church.

  288. There's a spectacular

  289. decline going on

  290. at the present time

  291. in the large denominations.

  292. The decline is such

  293. that it is even

  294. worrying atheists.

  295. Some atheists

  296. are beginning

  297. to call themselves

  298. Christian atheists.

  299. It reminds me

  300. of the story

  301. that's told

  302. about Northern Ireland

  303. where a man said

  304. he was an atheist

  305. and he was immediately asked,

  306. are you a Catholic atheist

  307. or a Protestant atheist?

  308. But the reason

  309. why they're doing this

  310. is because

  311. they see

  312. the effect

  313. of the loss

  314. of Christianity

  315. in our society

  316. on morality.

  317. But there is

  318. such a decline

  319. going on.

  320. And although

  321. the Lord Jesus

  322. promised that

  323. the gates of hell

  324. would not prevail

  325. against the church

  326. that he established

  327. on the rock,

  328. there is no guarantee

  329. that the church

  330. in any particular area

  331. will continue

  332. to survive.

  333. There once was

  334. a thriving church

  335. in the area

  336. that's now called

  337. Turkey,

  338. used to be called

  339. Asia Minor.

  340. The Apostle John

  341. was instructed

  342. by Jesus

  343. to write letters

  344. to the seven churches

  345. there.

  346. And in some

  347. of these letters

  348. he warned

  349. that if they did

  350. not repent,

  351. if they did not

  352. turn around

  353. and set right

  354. the things

  355. that were wrong,

  356. he would come

  357. and remove

  358. the candlestick

  359. or the lamp

  360. that symbolized

  361. the church.

  362. And indeed

  363. in the history

  364. of that area

  365. since then

  366. that happened.

  367. There once was

  368. a thriving church

  369. there,

  370. there's hardly

  371. anything there now.

  372. North Africa

  373. was the same.

  374. St. Augustine,

  375. one of the greatest

  376. theologians of the church

  377. came from North Africa.

  378. It completely

  379. disappeared.

  380. So

  381. there are

  382. real fears

  383. concerning the future

  384. of the church

  385. in our society.

  386. And hanging

  387. over all

  388. there is

  389. the specter

  390. of death.

  391. This has been

  392. brought home

  393. to many of us

  394. in the past few weeks

  395. by several deaths

  396. of friends

  397. and loved ones.

  398. Of course

  399. some people

  400. just try to ignore

  401. the reality of death

  402. or make light of it.

  403. Filmmaker Woody Allen

  404. famously said

  405. it's not that

  406. I'm afraid

  407. to die,

  408. I just don't want

  409. to be there

  410. when it happens.

  411. But of course

  412. underneath that

  413. kind of light

  414. jocular response

  415. there is a real

  416. fear of death.

  417. Sam Cooke

  418. in the well-known song

  419. A Change Is Gonna Come

  420. said

  421. it's been too hard

  422. living

  423. but I'm afraid

  424. to die

  425. I don't know

  426. what's up there

  427. beyond the sky.

  428. Or John Dryden

  429. a 17th century poet

  430. put it like this

  431. death in itself

  432. is nothing

  433. but we fear

  434. to be

  435. we know not what

  436. we know not where.

  437. There's a general

  438. pessimism in the face

  439. of death

  440. resulting

  441. coming from

  442. the kind of atheism

  443. and agnosticism

  444. we've been talking about.

  445. Bertrand Russell

  446. one of the great

  447. atheist philosophers

  448. of the 20th century

  449. said

  450. brief and powerless

  451. is man's life

  452. on him

  453. and all his race

  454. the slow

  455. sure doom

  456. falls

  457. pitiless

  458. and dark.

  459. So in light

  460. of all of that

  461. how can David

  462. have this confidence

  463. in the face

  464. of the fear

  465. of evil?

  466. He said

  467. he will fear

  468. no evil

  469. but first of all

  470. we want to ask

  471. the question

  472. what kind

  473. of confidence

  474. is that

  475. that he's expressing

  476. there?

  477. First thing

  478. I want to say

  479. is this

  480. that it's a

  481. realistic confidence.

  482. Now what do I

  483. mean by that?

  484. Well some people

  485. seem to think

  486. that Christians

  487. have a kind

  488. of blind optimism

  489. in the face

  490. of reality.

  491. It's as if

  492. we just ignore

  493. the harsh realities

  494. of life

  495. pretend that

  496. they're not there.

  497. Of course

  498. that is the kind

  499. of hope

  500. that many people

  501. have.

  502. You know

  503. people say

  504. things are not

  505. quite as bad

  506. as all that

  507. and everything

  508. will turn out

  509. all right

  510. somehow in the end.

  511. That is not

  512. the hope

  513. of the Christian.

  514. The quality

  515. of our hope

  516. is perfectly

  517. illustrated

  518. by David

  519. here.

  520. Even though

  521. I walk

  522. through the

  523. valley

  524. of the

  525. shadow

  526. of death

  527. I will

  528. fear no

  529. evil.

  530. Now we

  531. don't know

  532. exactly when

  533. David wrote

  534. this psalm.

  535. Some of the

  536. psalms we do

  537. know because

  538. there's a

  539. heading that

  540. tells us

  541. but Psalm

  542. 23 doesn't

  543. tell us.

  544. But it

  545. seems to me

  546. likely that

  547. he wrote

  548. this about

  549. his experiences

  550. as an outlaw

  551. when he was

  552. being hunted

  553. by King Saul

  554. and he drew

  555. on his

  556. memories of

  557. his early

  558. shepherding

  559. life.

  560. He felt

  561. like the

  562. sheep

  563. passing

  564. through a

  565. deep

  566. dark

  567. valley

  568. being hunted

  569. by lions

  570. and wolves.

  571. He was

  572. facing up

  573. to the

  574. reality

  575. of danger.

  576. And it's

  577. only when we

  578. face up to

  579. the reality

  580. of danger

  581. and the

  582. real basis

  583. of our

  584. fears

  585. that we

  586. can find

  587. real hope.

  588. Of course

  589. we need

  590. to be able

  591. to distinguish

  592. between real

  593. fears and

  594. what we might

  595. call a

  596. general anxious

  597. frame of mind

  598. that's afraid

  599. of everything.

  600. But we

  601. have to

  602. recognize

  603. that we

  604. have real

  605. fears based

  606. on reality.

  607. Fears about

  608. our world,

  609. fears about

  610. our country,

  611. fears about

  612. our church,

  613. and about

  614. our own

  615. personal future.

  616. There are

  617. real enemies

  618. of the grace

  619. and truth

  620. of the gospel,

  621. both human

  622. and satanic.

  623. In the coming

  624. year and decade

  625. we may have

  626. to pass through

  627. the valley

  628. of the shadow

  629. of death.

  630. The long

  631. shadow of death

  632. may fall

  633. on our culture,

  634. our church,

  635. and our own

  636. lives.

  637. As the hymn

  638. that we're

  639. going to sing

  640. at the end

  641. of this service

  642. says,

  643. God may call

  644. us to go

  645. through deep

  646. waters,

  647. our pathway

  648. may lie

  649. through fiery

  650. trials.

  651. It's only

  652. against the

  653. background of

  654. this bleak

  655. reality that

  656. we can have

  657. real hope.

  658. The second

  659. thing I want

  660. to notice

  661. is the

  662. wide-ranging

  663. confidence

  664. that David

  665. expresses here.

  666. I will fear

  667. no evil.

  668. David was

  669. saying that

  670. there was

  671. no evil,

  672. no kind

  673. of evil

  674. that would

  675. destroy his

  676. faith or

  677. undermine his

  678. hope and his

  679. confidence.

  680. For David,

  681. there was the

  682. obvious fear

  683. of King Saul,

  684. who had all

  685. the machinery

  686. of state

  687. at his disposal.

  688. For us,

  689. too,

  690. there are the

  691. fears caused

  692. by the takeover

  693. of all the

  694. machinery of state

  695. and much more

  696. by those who

  697. are either

  698. indifferent to

  699. the word of

  700. God or

  701. actively opposed

  702. to it.

  703. For David,

  704. there was also

  705. a constant fear

  706. of betrayal.

  707. This morning,

  708. James mentioned

  709. Doeg the Edomite

  710. in connection

  711. with one of

  712. the psalms

  713. that we sung

  714. this morning.

  715. He betrayed

  716. David and

  717. particularly the

  718. priests that

  719. had helped him

  720. so that Saul

  721. then had them

  722. all murdered.

  723. David was in

  724. fear of betrayal

  725. by the people

  726. of Keilah

  727. who were about

  728. to hand him

  729. over to Saul.

  730. And later in life,

  731. he was betrayed

  732. by his own son

  733. Absalom,

  734. his counselor

  735. Ahithophel,

  736. and his general

  737. Joab.

  738. We, too,

  739. can have a sense

  740. of betrayal

  741. when we're let

  742. down by family

  743. or by friends

  744. or by fellow

  745. Christians who

  746. compromise

  747. with the spirit

  748. of the age.

  749. David was also

  750. no doubt conscious

  751. of the evil

  752. in his own heart.

  753. David is one

  754. of the characters

  755. in the Bible

  756. that we can

  757. identify with

  758. most.

  759. He was a man

  760. after God's

  761. own heart.

  762. He was one

  763. of the greatest

  764. military leaders

  765. in the history

  766. of the world,

  767. but he was also

  768. frail and fallible

  769. and foolish

  770. at times.

  771. His weakness

  772. where the opposite

  773. sex was concerned

  774. and his indulgence

  775. of his sons

  776. are two things

  777. that stand out.

  778. We may also

  779. have fears

  780. concerning the

  781. temptations

  782. we are prone

  783. to,

  784. that we will

  785. act foolishly

  786. or shamefully.

  787. So the fears

  788. that are being

  789. considered here

  790. are wide-ranging

  791. and comprehensive.

  792. David says

  793. he fears

  794. or will fear

  795. no evil,

  796. no kind

  797. of evil.

  798. How can he

  799. say that?

  800. And how can we

  801. face up to all

  802. the troubles

  803. and challenges

  804. that may confront

  805. us with courage

  806. and say,

  807. I'm not afraid.

  808. I fear

  809. no evil.

  810. David

  811. had a reason

  812. for his confidence.

  813. It was a reasonable

  814. confidence

  815. that he was expressing.

  816. His is a reasonable

  817. faith and hope.

  818. He doesn't just say,

  819. I'll fear no evil.

  820. He doesn't just say,

  821. no matter what happens,

  822. I'm not afraid.

  823. It's not some kind

  824. of boast.

  825. He says,

  826. I will fear no evil

  827. for you are with me.

  828. His confidence

  829. is not a blind optimism.

  830. It's not just saying,

  831. it'll be fine.

  832. Everything will turn out

  833. all right.

  834. Nor is it a faith

  835. in himself

  836. and his own abilities.

  837. David had many gifts

  838. and abilities,

  839. more than most.

  840. But his confidence

  841. was not based there.

  842. Nor was his confidence

  843. based on others.

  844. He knew that others

  845. might let him down

  846. and disappoint him.

  847. No,

  848. his confidence

  849. was based on the Lord,

  850. his shepherd,

  851. who was with him

  852. and would surely

  853. defend and protect him.

  854. Even as David himself,

  855. as a shepherd boy,

  856. had protected his sheep

  857. with his rod

  858. and his staff.

  859. Notice his faith

  860. is not in things

  861. that he knew

  862. about God,

  863. but in God himself

  864. and in God's relationship

  865. with him.

  866. his experience

  867. of God's presence

  868. with him.

  869. I will not be afraid

  870. for you are with me.

  871. This is the only reason

  872. that we can ultimately

  873. have hope

  874. in the face of our fears.

  875. Personal hope.

  876. Hope for the church

  877. and hope for the world

  878. if God is with us.

  879. And if we trust

  880. in the Lord Jesus Christ,

  881. he is our Emmanuel.

  882. How often we were singing

  883. that word over past weeks,

  884. Emmanuel.

  885. It means God with us.

  886. That's the central reality

  887. of our faith.

  888. In Isaiah 43,

  889. in the passage that we read,

  890. verse 1 says,

  891. Fear not,

  892. I have redeemed you.

  893. Verse 5,

  894. Do not be afraid,

  895. for I am with you.

  896. And constantly in the Bible

  897. we are being told,

  898. don't be afraid,

  899. fear not.

  900. And especially by Jesus.

  901. In Mark chapter 14,

    Mark 14:27

  902. verse 27,

  903. Jesus said to the disciples

  904. when they saw him

  905. walking on the water

  906. and were terrified,

  907. thinking it was a ghost,

  908. he said,

  909. Take courage,

  910. it's I,

  911. don't be afraid.

  912. Or in Matthew chapter 10,

    Matthew 10:31

  913. verse 31,

  914. he said to his disciples,

  915. Don't be afraid,

  916. you are worth more

  917. than many sparrows.

  918. These are just some

  919. of the examples

  920. from Jesus

  921. and in other parts

  922. of Scripture

  923. where we're told

  924. not to be afraid

  925. because God is with us,

  926. because God values us.

  927. The antidote to our fears

  928. is the identity

  929. of the one

  930. who has promised

  931. to be with us.

  932. The creator

  933. who made us

  934. in his own image.

  935. We are precious to him.

  936. The savior

  937. who redeemed us

  938. by giving his own life

  939. to ransom us

  940. from the curse of the law.

  941. The friend

  942. who has promised

  943. to be with us,

  944. never to leave us

  945. nor forsake us.

  946. This psalm speaks

  947. of some of the consequences

  948. of God being with you,

  949. of being your shepherd.

  950. Verses 1 to 3,

  951. he'll give you satisfaction,

  952. peace of mind,

  953. and refreshment of soul.

  954. Verses 3 and 4,

  955. he'll guide you

  956. in doing what is right,

  957. being beside you

  958. every step of the way.

  959. Verse 4,

  960. he will be with you

  961. to comfort you

  962. in danger

  963. and in trouble

  964. and even in death itself.

  965. Verse 5,

  966. instead of being shamed

  967. and defeated

  968. before your enemies,

  969. he will grant you

  970. honor and glory.

  971. Verse 6,

  972. he'll love you

  973. and be good to you

  974. in all the ups

  975. and downs of life,

  976. and in the end,

  977. he'll take you

  978. to be with him

  979. forever.

  980. So,

  981. as you contemplate

  982. the future,

  983. whatever the future

  984. may hold for you,

  985. we don't know,

  986. but you need fear

  987. no evil

  988. if your faith

  989. is in the Lord Jesus Christ,

  990. the Good Shepherd.

  991. So often,

  992. the Christian faith

  993. is misrepresented.

  994. Some people think

  995. that if you're a Christian,

  996. it's all about fear,

  997. fear of breaking rules,

  998. fear of what other people

  999. will think,

  1000. and so on.

  1001. Well,

  1002. the Christian does

  1003. have one fear,

  1004. and that is

  1005. the fear of God.

1006. This is not abject terror

  1007. or enervating dread,

  1008. but it's the awe

  1009. and reverence

1010. due to a mighty God,

  1011. creator of the universe

1012. and judge of all the earth.

1013. If you truly fear God

  1014. in that right way,

  1015. that drives out

  1016. all other fears.

  1017. James Douglas,

  1018. the Earl of Morton,

  1019. said at the funeral

  1020. of John Knox

  1021. in 1572,

  1022. Here lies he

  1023. who neither feared

  1024. nor flattered

  1025. any flesh.

  1026. He feared the face

  1027. of no man

  1028. because he feared God.

1029. There are so many fears today

1030. because there is no fear

  1031. of God.

  1032. Bob Dylan said,

1033. we live in a political world

  1034. in the cities

  1035. of lonesome fear.

1036. Or as he put it

  1037. in an earlier song,

1038. I pity the poor immigrant

  1039. who passionately hates

  1040. his life

  1041. and likewise fears

  1042. his death.

  1043. These words still resonate

  1044. today in so much

  1045. of our lives.

1046. What David is telling us here

  1047. is that the fear

  1048. and love of God

  1049. casts out

  1050. all other fears.

  1051. In a minute,

  1052. we're going to sing

  1053. the hymn

  1054. How Firm a Foundation,

  1055. which expresses

  1056. all this

  1057. better than I can.

  1058. How firm a foundation,

1059. you saints of the Lord,

1060. is laid for your faith

  1061. in his excellent word.

1062. What more can he say

1063. than to you he has said,

1064. to you who for refuge

  1065. to Jesus have fled.

  1066. Fear not,

  1067. I am with you.

  1068. Oh, be not dismayed,

1069. for I am your God

1070. and will still give you aid.

  1071. I'll strengthen you,

  1072. help you,

1073. and cause you to stand,

  1074. upheld by my gracious,

  1075. omnipotent hand.

1076. When through the deep waters

1077. I call you to go,

  1078. the rivers of sorrow

  1079. shall not overflow,

1080. for I will be with you

  1081. your trouble to bless

  1082. and sanctify to you

  1083. your deepest distress.

  1084. When through fiery trials

  1085. your pathway shall lie,

  1086. my grace all-sufficient

  1087. shall be your supply.

1088. The flame shall not harm you,

  1089. I only design

  1090. your dross to consume

1091. and your gold to refine.

1092. The soul that on Jesus

  1093. now leans for repose,

  1094. I will not,

1095. I will not desert to his foes.

  1096. That soul,

  1097. though all hell,

  1098. should endeavor to shake,

  1099. I'll never,

  1100. no never,

  1101. no never forsake.
