  1. John chapter 15 on page 1083 of our Bibles.

    John 15 chapter mention

  2. So from John chapter 13 into chapter 17,

    John 13 chapter mention

  3. we have a teaching of Jesus to his disciples

  4. the night of his arrest,

  5. the night before his death on the cross.

  6. And here in John chapter 15 and verse 18,

    John 15 chapter mention

  7. through to chapter 16,

  8. Jesus begins to prepare the disciples

  9. for what they will face for his sake.

  10. So John 15 at verse 18.

  11. If the world hates you,

  12. keep in mind that it hated me first.

  13. If you belonged to the world,

  14. it would love you as its own.

  15. As it is, you do not belong to the world,

  16. but I have chosen you out of the world.

  17. That is why the world hates you.

  18. Remember the words I spoke to you.

  19. No servant is greater than his master.

  20. If they persecuted me,

  21. they will persecute you also.

  22. If they obeyed my teaching,

  23. they will obey yours also.

  24. They will treat you this way because of my name,

  25. for they do not know the one who sent me.

  26. If I had not come and spoken to them,

  27. they would not be guilty of sin.

  28. Now, however, they have no excuse for their sin.

  29. He who hates me hates my father as well.

  30. If I had not done among them what no one else did,

  31. they would not be guilty of sin.

  32. But now they have seen these miracles,

  33. and yet they have hated both me and my father.

  34. But this is to fulfill what is written in their law.

  35. They hated me without reason.

  36. When the counselor comes,

  37. whom I will send to you from the father,

  38. the spirit of truth who goes out from the father,

  39. he will testify about me.

  40. And you also must testify,

  41. for you have been with me from the beginning.

  42. All this I have told you,

  43. so that you will not go astray.

  44. They will put you out of the synagogue.

  45. In fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you

  46. will think he's offering a service to God.

  47. They will do such things

  48. because they have not known the father or me.

  49. I have told you this,

  50. so that when the time comes,

  51. you will remember that I warned you.

  52. I did not tell you this at first

  53. because I was with you.

  54. And then at the end of chapter 16,

  55. just at verse 33,

  56. as he concludes, he says,

  57. I have told you these things

  58. so that in me you may have peace.

  59. In this world you will have trouble,

  60. but take heart,

  61. I have overcome the world.

  62. And then in the letter of James,

  63. as we begin to look at the letter of James this evening,

  64. James chapter 1 on page 1213.

    James 1 chapter mention

  65. And we will read the first eight verses together.

  66. So James chapter 1,

    James 1 chapter mention

  67. first eight verses on page 1213.

  68. James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,

  69. to the twelve tribes scattered among the nations.

  70. Greetings.

  71. Consider it pure joy, my brothers,

  72. whenever you face trials of many kinds,

  73. because you know that the testing of your faith

  74. develops perseverance.

  75. Perseverance must finish its work

  76. so that you may be mature and complete,

  77. not lacking anything.

  78. If any of you lacks wisdom,

  79. he should ask God,

  80. who gives generously to all without finding fault,

  81. and it will be given to him.

  82. But when he asks,

  83. he must believe and not doubt,

  84. because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea

  85. blown and tossed by the wind.

  86. That man should not think

  87. he will receive anything from the Lord.

  88. He is a double-minded man,

  89. unstable in all he does.

  90. Let's think together about what James says

  91. regarding joy in trials.

  92. I don't know if any of you are like me,

  93. where sort of post-Christmas,

  94. eating a lot of food,

  95. typically not very healthy food,

  96. you have new resolve for good diet and good exercise.

  97. Well, I came up with my post-Christmas,

  98. and I suspect it's becoming annual running resolve

  99. at least three times a week,

  100. which lasted about three days of that week,

  101. because then the wind and the rain came,

  102. and I discovered I am definitely a fair-weather runner.

  103. You'll hear lots of people saying,

  104. in terms of exercise and going to the gym,

  105. no pain, no gain.

  106. That's received wisdom,

  107. only if you receive it.

  108. You come to the book of James,

  109. and we've got New Testament wisdom.

  110. James, the half-brother of Jesus,

  111. who describes himself interestingly,

  112. not in terms of his biological relation to Jesus,

  113. but in terms of his spiritual relation.

  114. He is servant of God

  115. and servant of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  116. He's writing to the Jewish Christians,

  117. picture of the 12 tribes there in verse 1,

  118. scattered by persecution,

  119. and he is writing what's regarded

  120. as New Testament wisdom.

  121. But we might again say,

  122. really?

  123. James, is what you're about to say,

  124. really, wisdom?

  125. Joy in trials?

  126. You can easily sound like an oxymoron, can't it?

  127. Two things that just don't belong together.

  128. How do joy in trials fit together?

  129. Rather, we perhaps more typically,

  130. when it comes to trials and suffering,

  131. think in terms of fear.

  132. We recognize the hurt that might come,

  133. the cost that might be involved to us

  134. on any number of levels.

  135. So trials are something we typically look to avoid.

  136. There is fear as a response.

  137. Or another response is perhaps

  138. to fixate on our suffering

  139. so that's all we can see,

  140. so that our very identity is bound up

  141. with the trial that we are going through.

  142. It's hard to see a way out.

  143. It's hard to look up.

  144. We find ourselves consumed by it.

  145. Sometimes our attitude towards trials

  146. is to forget.

  147. Forget, perhaps,

  148. that we've been there before

  149. and we learned important lessons

  150. in relation to Christian experience.

  151. So we come to a new trial

  152. and again,

  153. we're asking lots of why questions

  154. and what questions

  155. and we can't see

  156. that there can be any useful purpose

  157. to serve in our suffering.

  158. So we might ask James,

  159. really, is joy in trials wisdom?

  160. James gives us another response,

  161. a fourth F,

  162. and it's the F of faith.

  163. There can be joy in trials

  164. when we have Christian faith

  165. and when we learn to look at them

  166. in the right way.

  167. So that's why I hope this evening

  168. we'll be able to begin

  169. to consider together

  170. how can we look at trials

  171. in such a way

  172. that it's possible for us to have joy

  173. because we understand

  174. what God wants to do.

  175. So three questions.

  176. Our first question is

  177. the most basic one, I suppose.

  178. How can I have joy in trials?

  179. Let me begin with a statement

  180. and then we'll begin to see

  181. how James unpacks it.

  182. I'm going to feel like

  183. I'm talking about myself

  184. in the third person

  185. for this whole series.

  186. I can tell already.

  187. As a Christian,

  188. I can see through the trials

  189. that God sends

  190. to God's purpose

  191. and that purpose

  192. is mature faith

  193. and Christ-likeness.

  194. Let's look at verses

  195. two to four together.

  196. Begins,

  197. consider it pure joy,

  198. my brothers.

  199. We can have joy in trials

  200. if we experience them

  201. in the first place

  202. as Christians.

  203. That's the idea

  204. of my brothers,

  205. brothers and sisters,

  206. as Christians.

  207. The Christian faith

  208. has a theology

  209. of suffering.

  210. It gives an understanding

  211. to where suffering

  212. comes from.

  213. The fall of man,

  214. Adam and Eve,

  215. the fall of man

  216. into sin

  217. brought curse

  218. and dislocation

  219. and suffering

  220. as a consequence.

  221. Our theology

  222. also gives God's response

  223. to human suffering

  224. caused by sin.

  225. It's the gospel.

  226. God himself

  227. in Jesus Christ

  228. enters into

  229. a world of suffering

  230. in order to

  231. redeem us

  232. and to give us

  233. the hope

  234. of eternal life

  235. beyond suffering.

  236. So the promise

  237. of our Christian faith

  238. is that

  239. while we will suffer now,

  240. there is glory

  241. to follow.

  242. There is freedom

  243. from suffering

  244. still to come.

  245. That path

  246. that Jesus walked

  247. of suffering first,

  248. glory to follow,

  249. is the path

  250. that all his followers

  251. walk after him.

  252. And in this theology

  253. of suffering

  254. that the Christian faith

  255. has,

  256. James introduces us

  257. to another

  258. significant idea

  259. and it's this,

  260. that the sovereign God

  261. is able to use

  262. our trials,

  263. the suffering

  264. we endure,

  265. human evil even,

  266. to accomplish

  267. his good purposes

  268. in the world

  269. and in our lives.

  270. And so as Christians

  271. we have answers

  272. in the Bible

  273. to the problem

  274. of suffering.

  275. The Bible says

  276. it has meaning

  277. and in our Emmanuel,

  278. God with us,

  279. we also have

  280. God's response.

  281. We can have joy

  282. in trials

  283. as Christians

  284. if and when

  285. we can see

  286. through the trials

  287. to God's purpose.

  288. purpose.

  289. One thing that we recognize

  290. is that James

  291. is honest

  292. and the Bible

  293. is honest

  294. that trials

  295. and suffering

  296. are part of

  297. Christian experience.

  298. Notice

  299. verse 2,

  300. consider it pure joy,

  301. my brothers,

  302. whenever,

  303. not if you face trials,

  304. but whenever

  305. you face trials.

  306. That was the preparation

  307. Jesus gave

  308. to the disciples

  309. before he was to die.

  310. Opposition

  311. will be real,

  312. hatred

  313. will be real,

  314. trouble

  315. will come.

  316. Of course,

  317. Jesus offered

  318. them real hope

  319. as well.

  320. You belong

  321. to me,

  322. I have overcome

  323. the world,

  324. but Jesus

  325. is honest

  326. about the cost

  327. of discipleship.

  328. What are

  329. these trials

  330. that James

  331. speaks about?

  332. These trials

  333. are external

  334. pressures

  335. and those

  336. are,

  337. in some measure,

  338. the suffering,

  339. the human experience

  340. that is common

  341. to everybody

  342. because we live

  343. in a fallen

  344. and a broken world,

  345. but there is also

  346. within that

  347. the particular

  348. suffering

  349. that people experience

  350. for being

  351. a Christian.

  352. As Jesus said,

  353. you'll be hated

  354. as my followers.

  355. But notice

  356. that James

  357. deliberately

  358. keeps things

  359. vague

  360. and broad

  361. rather than

  362. specific.

  363. Whenever you

  364. face trials

  365. of many kinds,

  366. this is a general

  367. principle he is

  368. introducing.

  369. In the letter

  370. of James,

  371. you see some

  372. of the trials

  373. that Christians

  374. experience.

  375. He'll talk

  376. about poverty,

  377. he'll talk

  378. about injustice

  379. and conflict

  380. and sickness

  381. and grief

  382. to name

  383. just some.

  384. So then it's

  385. perhaps surprising

  386. that he issues

  387. the command

  388. that he does

  389. in verse 2.

  390. The command

  391. is to consider

  392. it pure joy

  393. whenever you

  394. face trials

  395. of many kinds.

  396. Now,

  397. he's not saying,

  398. and we'll notice

  399. this,

  400. he's not saying

  401. we should go

  402. out of our way

  403. to seek out

  404. suffering.

  405. We shouldn't

  406. be looking

  407. for ways

  408. to beat

  409. ourselves up

  410. and to make

  411. our life

  412. more difficult.

  413. nor is

  414. the Bible

  415. saying to us

  416. we should put

  417. on a happy

  418. face in pain

  419. and act like

  420. we are full

  421. of joy

  422. when our life

  423. is falling

  424. apart.

  425. Rather,

  426. we can consider

  427. our trials

  428. joy because,

  429. verse 3,

  430. because of

  431. what God

  432. is doing.

  433. There is joy

  434. as we see

  435. through our

  436. trials

  437. to God's

  438. purpose.

  439. When we see

  440. that God

  441. hasn't abandoned

  442. us,

  443. but rather

  444. is working

  445. in us

  446. and in

  447. those trials

  448. to give us

  449. a mature

  450. faith

  451. to conform

  452. us into

  453. the image

  454. of Christ,

  455. then we can

  456. have joy

  457. in our

  458. trials.

  459. I had a

  460. triumph

  461. over the

  462. Christmas

  463. holidays.

  464. As a kid,

  465. I grew up

  466. with our

  467. local news

  468. agent

  469. having

  470. magic eye

  471. posters

  472. for sale.

  473. If you

  474. don't know

  475. what magic

  476. eye

  477. posters

  478. are,

  479. there's

  480. those

  481. pictures

  482. that

  483. were

  484. just

  485. a

  486. collection

  487. of

  488. random

  489. shapes

  490. and colours

  491. and you

  492. had to

  493. sort of

  494. go cross-eyed

  495. and look

  496. at them

  497. in a certain

  498. way and

  499. then these

  500. wonderful

  501. images would

  502. appear.

  503. Well,

  504. I have

  505. never

  506. been able

  507. to see

  508. one of

  509. these

  510. magic eye

  511. pictures

  512. until the

  513. Christmas

  514. holidays

  515. and I

  516. was very

  517. delighted

  518. because the

  519. instruction

  520. all of a

  521. sudden

  522. made

  523. sense.

  524. It said,

  525. if you

  526. want to

  527. see this

  528. picture,

  529. you need

  530. to focus

  531. not on

  532. the page,

  533. you need

  534. to focus

  535. beyond

  536. the page.

  537. When I

  538. did that,

  539. it all

  540. became clear.

  541. From a

  542. chaotic

  543. pattern

  544. came a

  545. nice animal

  546. picture.

  547. When we

  548. are facing

  549. trials and

  550. life seems

  551. chaos,

  552. how do we

  553. look through

  554. to see

  555. God's

  556. purpose?

  557. What picture

  558. is God

  559. wanting us

  560. to see?

  561. What is it

  562. that we need

  563. to focus

  564. on

  565. through

  566. and

  567. beyond

  568. our

  569. trials?

  570. And it's

  571. this reality

  572. that God

  573. has a

  574. purpose.

  575. God has

  576. a purpose

  577. to grow

  578. our faith

  579. and to

  580. make us

  581. more like

  582. Jesus.

  583. Verse

  584. three,

  585. consider it

  586. joy because

  587. you know

  588. that the

  589. testing of

  590. your faith

  591. develops

  592. perseverance.

  593. There's a

  594. testing

  595. process.

  596. It's the

  597. idea of

  598. a refining

  599. process,

  600. of dross

  601. being burned

  602. away,

  603. leaving the

  604. pure gold

  605. behind.

  606. Trials

  607. have that

  608. effect on

  609. us as

  610. Christians.

  611. In different

  612. ways,

  613. perhaps that

  614. dross is

  615. to make us

  616. once again

  617. devoted and

  618. dependent on

  619. God.

  620. Sometimes it's

  621. in trials

  622. that we

  623. realize the

  624. choking effects

  625. of idols

  626. in our lives

  627. that we are

  628. living for

  629. other things

  630. and it's

  631. only as we

  632. suffer that

  633. we realize

  634. that nothing

  635. else ultimately

  636. can help

  637. except for

  638. our God

  639. and Savior.

  640. Perhaps the

  641. dross that

  642. trials burn

  643. away is that

  644. sense of

  645. self-reliance

  646. when all is

  647. going well.

  648. We can imagine

  649. we have the

  650. natural resources

  651. to deal with

  652. the situations

  653. we face

  654. and it's only

  655. when we get

  656. in above our

  657. heads that we

  658. cry out to

  659. God and we

  660. return to

  661. Him perhaps.

  662. Sometimes that

  663. testing process

  664. reveals to us

  665. that we've been

  666. squeezed into

  667. the world's

  668. mold, that

  669. we've been

  670. looking at

  671. things and

  672. considering truth

  673. from the wrong

  674. point of view

  675. and again these

  676. trials have the

  677. process of

  678. turning us

  679. back, they

  680. bring us to

  681. repentance.

  682. So there is a

  683. refining process

  684. that goes on

  685. and it goes on

  686. so that the

  687. testing of our

  688. faith would

  689. develop

  690. perseverance,

  691. that it would

  692. develop in us

  693. staying power.

  694. In the face of

  695. adversity we are

  696. not going to

  697. give up, we're

  698. not going to

  699. be those fair

  700. weather runners

  701. that go with

  702. God when all is

  703. well but when

  704. we face trial

  705. we are going to

  706. sit on the

  707. sidelines.

  708. No, perseverance

  709. is God's

  710. intention.

  711. Just as an

  712. exercise our

  713. muscles are

  714. built by a

  715. process of

  716. resistance so

  717. the muscle of

  718. faith grows

  719. strong against

  720. the resistance

  721. of trials.

  722. It's trials that

  723. test how strong

  724. our faith is and

  725. allows our faith

  726. to grow and

  727. develop with

  728. God's intention,

  729. verse 4,

  730. that we may be

  731. mature and

  732. complete, not

  733. lacking anything.

  734. Perseverance

  735. must finish its

  736. work so that

  737. you may be

  738. mature and

  739. complete, not

  740. lacking anything.

  741. That we would be

  742. able to give a

  743. Christian response

  744. as we suffer,

  745. that we might be

  746. dedicated to doing

  747. the will of God

  748. and being concerned

  749. for the glory of

  750. God even as

  751. life perhaps

  752. becomes difficult

  753. or chaotic.

  754. We can think

  755. about the

  756. example of

  757. Job after

  758. tragedy and

  759. calamity came

  760. to him.

  761. The Lord gave

  762. and the Lord

  763. has taken away.

  764. Blessed be the

  765. name of the

  766. Lord or Jesus,

  767. the obedient

  768. sufferer.

  769. Ultimately,

  770. God's aim,

  771. James tells us,

  772. is that we would

  773. be perfected.

  774. This is about

  775. the end of

  776. the journey,

  777. when we would

  778. know him

  779. perfectly,

  780. when we would

  781. be made like

  782. Christ,

  783. sinless

  784. and perfect.

  785. That's the

  786. aim and

  787. trials are

  788. part of

  789. making us

  790. more like

  791. him,

  792. that we would

  793. be growing

  794. into that

  795. future reality

  796. day by day.

  797. Trials do

  798. that for us.

  799. It was

  800. Martin Luther

  801. who said,

  802. affliction is

  803. the Christian's

  804. theologian.

  805. He was saying

  806. there are some

  807. lessons as

  808. Christians we

  809. can only learn

  810. as we

  811. experience

  812. trials,

  813. as God

  814. sends hard

  815. providences to

  816. us.

  817. Maturing takes

  818. place only in

  819. adversity.

  820. And so,

  821. James is saying

  822. we actually

  823. need this

  824. for the sake

  825. of our

  826. faith to

  827. mature.

  828. God's

  829. ultimate

  830. purpose for

  831. us being

  832. to be more

  833. like Jesus,

  834. to ultimately

  835. become like

  836. him,

  837. requires us

  838. to go

  839. through trials.

  840. It made me

  841. think of

  842. a butterfly,

  843. you know,

  844. that metamorphosis

  845. of a caterpillar

  846. becoming a

  847. butterfly.

  848. Imagine if we

  849. were to come

  850. across a

  851. butterfly fighting

  852. to get out

  853. of its

  854. cocoon and

  855. we were to

  856. sense,

  857. maybe to hear

  858. the tiny

  859. flapping of

  860. wings and to

  861. sense the

  862. struggle,

  863. maybe to see

  864. it trying to

  865. get out.

  866. We would

  867. try and

  868. short circuit

  869. the process

  870. to help it

  871. on its way

  872. to open up

  873. the cocoon,

  874. to let the

  875. butterfly fly

  876. for free.

  877. What would

  878. happen was

  879. that butterfly

  880. would fall to

  881. the ground

  882. and have

  883. no hope.

  884. It needs

  885. that resistance

  886. so that its

  887. wings can be

  888. strengthened.

  889. And so

  890. too as

  891. Christians we

  892. need trials

  893. in order to

  894. strengthen and

  895. mature our

  896. faith.

  897. And as we

  898. go through

  899. trials, as we

  900. experience hardships,

  901. we remember that

  902. Jesus has gone

  903. there before us.

  904. In fact if we

  905. turn back in our

  906. Bible just one

  907. page, Hebrews

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  908. chapter 12,

  909. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  910. 12 and verse

  911. 2, we are

  912. encouraged as

  913. Christians to

  914. fix our eyes

  915. on Jesus, the

  916. author and

  917. perfecter of

  918. our faith, who

  919. for the joy set

  920. before him endured

  921. the cross, scorning

  922. its shame and sat

  923. down at the right

  924. hand of the throne

  925. of God.

  926. Consider him who

  927. endured such

  928. opposition from

  929. sinful men so

  930. that you will not

  931. grow weary and

  932. lose heart.

  933. If we feel that we

  934. are growing weary

  935. as we battle

  936. through trial, we

  937. are to fix our

  938. eyes on Jesus, to

  939. see that he has

  940. faced the

  941. suffering of the

  942. cross with joy

  943. for what that

  944. would accomplish.

  945. For him that

  946. meant returning

  947. to glory, to be

  948. in the right hand

  949. of the Father, but

  950. also it would

  951. mean his bringing

  952. many sons and

  953. daughters to glory

  954. in the fullness

  955. of time also.

  956. When we fix our

  957. eyes on him, the

  958. author to the

  959. Hebrews says, that's

  960. our antidote to

  961. weariness and

  962. losing heart.

  963. To remember, as

  964. we go through

  965. trials, our God

  966. will enable us,

  967. will provide for

  968. us, will walk

  969. with us so that

  970. we might have

  971. joy in trials.

  972. That's the first

  973. point.

  974. That's the main

  975. thing for us to

  976. see.

  977. But we're not

  978. done here.

  979. Second question,

  980. thinking about

  981. verse 5, what if

  982. you and I don't

  983. find joy in our

  984. trials?

  985. Sometimes the

  986. book of James can

  987. seem like he dots

  988. around from topic

  989. to topic and we

  990. might think he's

  991. moved from trial,

  992. now he's talking

  993. about wisdom.

  994. But I think we

  995. should see these

  996. two topics relate

  997. to one another.

  998. If we don't find

  999. joy in our trials,

  1000. we should ask our

  1001. generous and

  1002. gracious Father for

  1003. wisdom to see

  1004. from his

  1005. perspective, to

  1006. see his

  1007. purpose.

  1008. Let's read verse

  1009. 5 together again.

  1010. If any of you

  1011. lacks wisdom, he

  1012. should ask God,

  1013. who gives generously

  1014. to all without

  1015. finding fault, and

  1016. it will be given

  1017. to him.

  1018. So notice there's

  1019. a linking word.

  1020. Verse 4, the goal

  1021. is that we would

  1022. not be lacking

  1023. anything.

  1024. Then verse 5, if

  1025. you do lack

  1026. wisdom.

  1027. So if when it

  1028. comes to trials, we

  1029. find ourselves time

  1030. and again profoundly

  1031. fearful or forgetful

  1032. of what God has

  1033. taught us in the

  1034. past, if we always

  1035. find ourselves

  1036. wrestling with, why

  1037. me?

  1038. Why this?

  1039. Why now?

  1040. When we're really

  1041. struggling to know

  1042. what good purpose

  1043. trials can accomplish,

1044. we are to ask our

  1045. Father for wisdom,

1046. to learn how to look

  1047. at our reality so

  1048. that we can give

  1049. him glory with the

  1050. providence that we

  1051. are going through.

  1052. Notice, and this is

  1053. important, James

1054. doesn't say to us we

  1055. should ask for

  1056. knowledge.

  1057. Rather, we should

  1058. ask for wisdom.

  1059. Sometimes we want to

1060. know the why and the

  1061. what.

  1062. But James says,

  1063. rather, you should

  1064. ask for wisdom, to

  1065. know how to respond

  1066. to our circumstances,

1067. to know the will of

1068. God so that we might

  1069. apply it to our

  1070. day-to-day life.

1071. The book of Job is a

  1072. classic example of

  1073. someone who suffers

  1074. and he's never told

  1075. why, but he's invited

  1076. to know God.

1077. And once he is in the

  1078. presence of God, once

  1079. God reveals himself, he

  1080. is content.

  1081. James, being a wisdom

  1082. book, we can perhaps

  1083. remind ourselves of the

  1084. book of Proverbs, where

  1085. we are reminded that

1086. the fear of the Lord is

  1087. the beginning of

  1088. wisdom.

  1089. Wisdom for us looks

  1090. like catching hold of

  1091. God's character in the

1092. middle of our trials so

1093. that we are able to

  1094. remember our good God,

  1095. our gracious Father.

  1096. Wisdom is more

  1097. important than knowledge

1098. for us when we're going

  1099. through trials.

1100. We are in the digital age

1101. when almost any type of

  1102. information is available

  1103. to us.

1104. We are in the Ask Alexa

  1105. age and there's wonderful

  1106. opportunities in that and

  1107. it's a good thing, but it's

  1108. limited.

1109. We can have access to all

1110. the knowledge in the world,

1111. but that does not and it

1112. will not make us wise.

1113. So James is not saying to

1114. us, ask that we would know

1115. it all, but rather trust the

1116. one who does know it all.

1117. That we would hold on to

  1118. God's character.

1119. That we would recognize when

1120. trials come that our God is a

  1121. gracious and a generous

1122. Father, that we wouldn't lose

1123. sight of that and that we

1124. would ask Him for wisdom.

1125. Verse 5 is helpful for

1126. reminding us of the qualities

1127. of God that we discover in

  1128. the gospel.

1129. We discover in receiving faith

  1130. and receiving salvation that

1131. we have a God of generous

  1132. grace.

1133. We have a God who is generous

  1134. to all.

1135. This grace that He offers isn't

  1136. just for an elite.

1137. No, it's for anyone who will

1138. hear and believe and in the

1139. same way this wisdom is for

  1140. all God's children.

1141. Whoever we are, God makes His

  1142. wisdom available to us.

1143. And He will do it without

  1144. finding fault.

1145. Just as when we came to

1146. Jesus and we were repenting

1147. of sin and we wanted to trust

1148. in Him, the Father wasn't

1149. shaking His head or tut-tutting

  1150. for past mistakes.

1151. Rather, we are welcomed by a

1152. generous God of great grace.

1153. So it is when it comes to His

  1154. giving us wisdom.

1155. The same God who is generous in

1156. salvation, it is generous in

  1157. supplying wisdom.

1158. So if we lack it, we should ask

1159. and it will be given.

1160. James is reminding us that God

1161. doesn't change so we should

  1162. trust His promises.

1163. Just as Jesus said, ask and it

  1164. will be given.

1165. Seek and you will find.

1166. Knock and the door will be

  1167. opened to you.

1168. God is not reluctant to give us

1169. the wisdom that we need.

1170. Rather, God is generous and

1171. longing to give that wisdom so

1172. that when we face trials, we'd

1173. have the right perspective on

1174. them so that we might find joy

  1175. because we'd see God's purpose.

1176. But it's important for us to

  1177. understand that wisdom is

1178. connected to the Word of God.

1179. That we can't expect wisdom from

1180. God if we are not being connected

1181. to the source of that wisdom.

1182. Where do we go when we're looking

  1183. for God's wisdom?

1184. We go to His Word and we ask the

1185. Spirit to reveal His truth and

  1186. supply what is lacking.

1187. We need word and prayer and

1188. fellowship if we are to receive

1189. the wisdom that God wants to

  1190. give to us.

1191. And of course, we need union with

1192. Christ who is Himself the very

  1193. wisdom of God.

1194. As Paul said in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

1195. chapter 1, we preach Christ

1196. crucified to the Jews, a

1197. stumbling block and to the Greeks

  1198. foolishness.

1199. But to those who are called, both

1200. Jews and Greeks, Christ, the power

1201. of God and the wisdom of God.

1202. So if we are struggling to find joy

1203. in trials, we are to ask God for

  1204. wisdom.

  1205. One last question.

1206. As we think about ourselves, do I

1207. trust God to give me joy in trials?

1208. Do I think that's something God wants

  1209. to give?

1210. Do I believe it's something He can

  1211. give?

1212. For this, we're going to look at verses

  1213. 6 to 8.

1214. And in here, we have a warning against

1215. doubt and against divided loyalties.

  1216. Verse 6,

1217. But when he asks, he must believe and

1218. not doubt, because he who doubts is

1219. like a wave of the sea blown and

  1220. tossed by the wind.

1221. That man should not think he will

1222. receive anything from the Lord.

1223. He is a double-minded man, unstable in

  1224. all he does.

1225. Just as we teach our children that

1226. there's a right way and a wrong way to

1227. ask, so it is when we ask for wisdom,

1228. the right way is to trust.

1229. To trust God's character and to trust

  1230. God's Word.

1231. And for that to be a solid foundation.

1232. That before we come to trials, we want

1233. to have that foundation in our life that

1234. God's character is trustworthy and so is

  1235. His Word.

1236. In the middle of trials and suffering,

1237. it's hard to build a solid theology

1238. it's hard sometimes to recognize and

1239. grasp the character of God.

1240. This is something we need to do even

  1241. before trials come.

1242. To determine that I can and I will

1243. trust God and trust God as He's

  1244. revealed in His Word.

1245. So the right way to ask is to believe,

1246. to trust, but the wrong way is to doubt,

1247. is to be double-minded, is to have those

  1248. divided loyalties.

1249. Because when we ask that way, James says,

1250. we won't receive anything from the Lord.

1251. So if we're saying, well, I'll ask God and

1252. I'll look into His Word for wisdom, but I'll

1253. also listen to the world and I'll listen to

1254. what popular culture and the people around me

1255. have to say about suffering, we're going to

  1256. get very conflicted messages.

1257. Because when it comes to the voice of the world,

1258. as they talk about trial and suffering,

1259. it's very hard for people to see any purpose

1260. in hardship, in trial, in suffering.

1261. The whole purpose of our existence seems to be

1262. that we would be happy and live pain-free and

1263. carefree lives, that we would entertain ourselves

  1264. until death.

1265. That the voice of the world would say,

1266. avoid suffering and hardship at all costs.

1267. Would even challenge us and say, well, a good God

1268. would never allow this, that, and the next thing.

1269. So if we're listening to that voice, then we won't

1270. receive the wisdom from God.

1271. When we try and keep a foot in both camps and we're

1272. not sure where ultimate truth lies, the outcome is that

1273. we will not receive the help that we need as we go

  1274. through our trials.

  1275. Verse 6 says,

1276. we'll be like a wave in a stormy sea,

1277. sort of tossed about and going nowhere.

  1278. I think I've probably mentioned before,

1279. swimming off the coast of Peru and getting stuck in

1280. sort of riptides and feeling like I was in a washing machine.

1281. I had no clue of which way was up and which way was down.

1282. It was probably the worst experience of my life and it

1283. was danger for those moments.

1284. For us as Christians, that's not a place we want to be.

1285. We will only make progress and mature through trials if we

1286. have a clear direction where we're going to trust God and

1287. His Word, even if it's difficult.

1288. There's danger in being the double-minded man,

1289. the man who is unstable in all he does.

1290. Again, to stick with a water-related image,

1291. it made me think of what you see sometimes at church camp.

1292. So I used to help out at church camps a fair bit and a lot of

1293. camps would have sort of team-building exercises.

  1294. They'd have raft-building exercises.

1295. And every so often, you'd find one group that prepared something

1296. that could only very loosely be connected with anything

  1297. remotely seaworthy.

1298. And so there'd be some brave souls who'd be like,

1299. regardless, I'm going to get on this thing,

  1300. which we'll call a raft.

1301. But there might be that one person who just wasn't convinced,

1302. wasn't convinced by the workmanship that had gone in.

1303. And so you could see them kind of standing on the edge,

1304. kind of wanting to lift that foot.
