  1. Thank you so much for causing your word to be written.

  2. We thank you that you sent your son Jesus to die upon the cross to be our savior.

  3. We thank you for his tasting all there is to taste of death with nothing left over.

  4. We thank you, Father, for his mighty resurrection, and we thank you for his ascension,

  5. and we thank you, Father, for his coming again in glory.

  6. And we thank you, Father, that you didn't just act to save us, but you gave us the good news.

  7. You interpreted what happened. You told us what happened.

  8. Father, we thank you for this.

  9. We ask, Father, that you would gently but deeply pour out your Holy Spirit into us,

  10. so that our minds will not be conformed to this age,

  11. but we will be transformed, Father, by your word and by your Holy Spirit.

  12. We will be transformed and have minds that lead us to act in such a way

  13. that our lives bring you great glory.

  14. And this we ask in Jesus' name, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  15. Please be seated.

  16. I wish I could tell you that every time somebody says something to me at a coffee shop,

  17. like one of my non-Christian friends,

  18. I wish I could tell you that I was like an apologetic ninja

  19. that could just always parry everything that they say and just get them.

  20. But, you know, often I'm the exact opposite of an apologetic ninja.

  21. I just sort of stand there, not quite sure what to say,

  22. and then thinking of the perfect thing to say five minutes or five hours later or something like that.

  23. But I had a time just a little while ago where,

  24. maybe it was even about a year ago,

  25. maybe somebody had been to a church and heard something like the story of the Ascension,

  26. which we're going to look at.

  27. And he just completely mocked the story.

  28. And really, like, in really quick, you know,

  29. it's as if he'd been practicing,

  30. and his speech just came so perfectly flowing and quick.

  31. You know how completely and utterly ridiculous the Bible is?

  32. It's completely unscientific.

  33. It's worse than unscientific.

  34. It's completely anti-scientific.

  35. It presents this idea as if somehow or another

  36. God sent down a fishing hook or a line and grabbed Jesus

  37. and pulls him up into the sky.

  38. And just on the other side of the clouds,

  39. you know, where there's the blue dome,

  40. and it's just painted blue,

  41. and God paints it blue during the day,

  42. and he paints it black at night,

  43. or however, he just turns the light on and off.

  44. And God lives in some little room just above the sky,

  45. and he pulls Jesus up there,

  46. and that's where Jesus is.

  47. And the God and Jesus are just sort of waiting.

  48. And he said, you know,

  49. the Bible is just so completely and utterly ridiculous.

  50. And I remember one time when I had something like this happen to me,

  51. the fellow did it as well in a bit of a loud voice

  52. so that most of the Starbucks could hear it.

  53. And I can't remember what I said in reply.

  54. What I do know is that he actually probably,

  55. the fellow who said all this to me,

  56. actually probably wasn't willing to hear the answer.

  57. He just wanted to embarrass me.

  58. But some people don't just want to embarrass us,

  59. but they're troubled by texts like this.

  60. They're troubled by the fact that it seems as if the Bible has a worldview

  61. that science is just completely and utterly disproven

  62. of a very tiny little planet Earth,

  63. and there's no, you know, the sun is just like a,

  64. I don't know, like a light that God turns on in the sky

  65. and sort of walks it around the roof,

  66. like a theater a little bit, I suppose.

  67. You know, that the, and that God is just on the other side of that ceiling

  68. and he turns different lights on and off and,

  69. you know, has spotlights that move.

  70. And that's sometimes how it looks as if the Bible,

  71. is that what the Bible teaches?

  72. Is that what Christians are supposed to believe?

  73. It's obviously scientifically ridiculous.

  74. So let's look.

  75. Let's look and see what the Bible says.

  76. Be a great help to me if you open the Bible.

  77. Bible and Acts 1, verses 1 to 11.

    Acts 1:1–11

  78. And just a little bit of a plug.

  79. I also read my Bible on my phone and stuff like that.

  80. But, you know, I just want to really encourage you.

  81. There's something about a book.

  82. And part of the thing that's so good about a book

  83. is that you know it's a book.

  84. You know, when you're reading the book of Acts

  85. and you know, look at this, there's all this stuff

  86. in the book that goes before

  87. and there's all this stuff that comes after.

  88. There's just something about a book.

  89. And so I want to encourage you not to give up on books

  90. when it comes to reading your Bible.

  91. I mean, obviously, if the screen helps you read,

  92. then that's what you should do.

  93. But sometimes it's good to crack open a book

  94. and look at the words

  95. because you see the bigger flow.

  96. Anyway, Acts 1, 1 to 11.

  97. So is the Bible teaching us something pretty ridiculous,

  98. not only unscientific,

  99. but completely and utterly anti-scientific?

  100. So let's have a look.

  101. And we'll start here.

  102. Acts 1, verse 1.

    Acts 1:1

  103. In the first book, O Theophilus,

  104. I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach.

  105. Now just pause.

  106. He says here in the first book.

  107. So Luke has written another book

  108. and we know it as the Gospel of Luke.

  109. And it's very important in this case,

  110. if we just want to understand what the Bible is saying,

  111. to look at how Luke introduces his first book

  112. because he has a very similar type of introduction

  113. in both books.

  114. So if you can just, you can keep your finger there

  115. or maybe you're really good at finding places in the Bible,

  116. just turn to Luke chapter 1.

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  117. And we're just going to read the first four verses

  118. of Luke chapter 1

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  119. and just see how it is that Luke introduces

  120. the first book that he writes.

  121. And here's how he introduces it.

  122. Luke 1.

  123. Luke 1, 1.

  124. Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative

  125. of the things that have been accomplished among us,

  126. sorry, start again.

  127. Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative

  128. of the things that have been accomplished among us,

  129. just as those who from the beginning

  130. were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word

  131. have delivered them to us,

  132. it seemed good to me also,

  133. having followed all things closely for some time past,

  134. to write an orderly account for you,

  135. most excellent Theophilus,

  136. that you may have certainty

  137. concerning the things that you have been taught.

  138. So notice here that,

  139. in fact, just if you're not aware of this,

  140. Luke was not one of the original disciples.

  141. He's not Jewish.

  142. He didn't actually,

  143. he was an eyewitness of Jesus

  144. and what Jesus did.

  145. Luke was a pagan, well-educated.

  146. He was a doctor,

  147. who had been relatively prosperous,

  148. upper-middle-class doctor.

  149. He becomes a Christian,

  150. leaving paganism behind to become a Christian.

  151. And he's one of the early pagans

  152. who becomes a Christian.

  153. And Luke becomes very deeply involved

  154. in the early Christian community.

  155. He meets many of the people who are eyewitnesses.

  156. He probably,

  157. who knows what types of other things

  158. were in circulation,

  159. maybe little handwritten things

  160. or something like that.

  161. And he's a literate man,

  162. a scientific man,

  163. at least as they would have understood science back then,

  164. somebody who was careful in observation.

  165. And he decides to write

  166. not a story inspired by true events

  167. or based upon true events.

  168. He tries to tell you true events.

  169. That's what he's claiming to do.

  170. He tries to put in a narrative form.

  171. And the best history is always written

  172. in some type of a narrative form.

  173. He tries to put in a narrative form,

  174. selecting out of the hundreds and hundreds

  175. and hundreds of things

  176. that he could have written about Jesus,

  177. eyewitness testimony in a narrative form.

  178. And that's what he's trying to do.

  179. And Theophilus is a pagan name.

  180. So he's not writing it for Jewish people,

  181. although obviously he'd be fine

  182. if Jewish people read it.

  183. He's writing for other pagans.

  184. Whether Theophilus is a pagan

  185. who's become a Christian

  186. or whether he's a pagan

  187. who's a complete opponent and skeptic,

  188. whether he's a seeker, we don't know,

  189. but he writes to another pagan.

  190. So now let's look at Acts chapter one.

  191. Sort of mindful of that.

  192. That's Luke's first book.

  193. And now we see Luke's second book.

  194. And he wrote the first book

  195. thinking he'd write a second.

  196. And now we get how he introduces the second book.

  197. Remember, this is all important

  198. because we're trying to look and understand

  199. does the Bible portray

  200. that the universe is a little bit

  201. like the Ottawa Little Theater

  202. and God is on the roof.

  203. Well, actually, there's a space between,

  204. you know, here.

  205. No, God doesn't need a roof.

  206. So God just lives on the roof.

  207. Is that what the Bible's telling us?

  208. So chapter one of verse one of Acts again.

  209. In the first book, O Theophilus,

  210. I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach

  211. until the day when he was taken up

  212. after he had given commands or orders.

  213. It's a bit of a military image.

  214. Those of you who've served in the military,

  215. Jesus gave orders.

  216. He gave them a commission.

  217. He gave commands through the Holy Spirit

  218. to the apostles whom he had chosen.

  219. He presented himself alive to them

  220. after his suffering by many proofs,

  221. appearing to them during 40 days

  222. and speaking about the kingdom of God.

  223. So here's the first thing.

  224. Those of you who know me,

  225. I'm not going to say,

  226. well, this is just a metaphor.

  227. It's just an analogy.

  228. It's just, you know,

  229. a mythical account of peak experience

  230. or mystical experience.

  231. It's, you know,

  232. a way to use language or imagery

  233. to talk about, you know,

  234. what is Luke claiming?

  235. If you could put the first point up, Andrew,

  236. that would be great.

  237. Luke tells the true story of Jesus,

  238. body and soul,

  239. being taken up into heaven.

  240. That's what Luke's claiming to do.

  241. Now, we might say he's wrong.

  242. We might say that he was, you know,

  243. full of it.

  244. We might say that he's just,

  245. he's believing nonsense.

  246. We might believe,

  247. we might say all of those types of things

  248. and skeptics do

  249. and people from other religions

  250. and other faiths

  251. and other spiritualities

  252. and philosophies.

  253. That's what they do.

  254. But at least we need to hear Luke.

  255. And this is what Luke is claiming.

  256. Luke is claiming

  257. that he is telling

  258. the true story of Jesus

  259. who, body and soul,

  260. he was taken up into heaven.

  261. And so it's not a metaphor.

  262. It's not an image.

  263. And by the way,

  264. you know,

  265. here's one of the things.

  266. I'm not just saying this

  267. because this is what Christians

  268. have always believed.

  269. And some people might feel

  270. very uncomfortable

  271. because you see some Christians

  272. under the pressure

  273. of science

  274. and of skepticism.

  275. They think they're helping

  276. the Bible

  277. or helping the Christian faith

  278. by saying that it's just a metaphor

  279. or it's an image,

  280. it's an analogy,

  281. it's just a mythic telling

  282. of a spiritual truth.

  283. And they might even say,

  284. doesn't it actually say,

  285. George,

  286. in 1 Corinthians 15

  287. that Jesus doesn't have

  288. a physical body

  289. but he has a spiritual body?

  290. So isn't this just accounting

  291. just a spiritual thing?

  292. And so some people,

  293. in a well-meaning way,

  294. they try to reinterpret it.

  295. But the fact of the matter is,

  296. that's not at all

  297. what the Bible,

  298. it's not what the text says.

  299. Just even if you just set aside

  300. for a second,

  301. in a sense,

  302. I don't know if any of you

  303. have ever watched,

  304. there was a movie

  305. that went out,

  306. a documentary about

  307. Christopher Hitchens

  308. debating this very

  309. orthodox Christian

  310. and across the country.

  311. And one of the things

  312. that Christopher Hitchens

  313. says is that he loves

  314. debating this fellow.

  315. In fact,

  316. here's Lord have mercy.

  317. He said,

  318. I hate debating

  319. those Anglican types

  320. because when I start

  321. to press them

  322. on what the Bible says,

  323. they say it's just a metaphor,

  324. it's just an analogy,

  325. it's just a parable.

  326. But when I press

  327. this guy on things,

  328. he says,

  329. yeah, darn tootin',

  330. that's what it says.

  331. And he defends it.

  332. And the fact of the matter is,

  333. is that you can't read

  334. the book of Luke

  335. and you can't read

  336. the book of Acts

  337. without coming to believe

  338. that Luke believes

  339. that everything

  340. he's talking about

  341. happened.

  342. That's what he believes.

  343. From a literary point of view,

  344. that's what the book

  345. is trying to communicate.

  346. Whether or not

  347. that's ridiculous,

  348. that's a bit

  349. of another question,

  350. but we can't take refuge

  351. that it's describing mysticism.

  352. That's not what

  353. the text is saying,

  354. just straightly

  355. from an intellectual level.

  356. Now, here's the other thing

  357. about this text,

  358. is obviously we can't prove,

  359. I mean, Luke is claiming

  360. that if we went back

  361. in a time machine,

  362. and if we were there

  363. with the apostles,

  364. we were somehow able

  365. to be just somehow

  366. there in the background

  367. waiting for it to happen,

  368. what Luke described

  369. is what we would see.

  370. That's what Luke is claiming.

  371. But the proof for this,

  372. for somebody like you and me,

  373. is it ultimately goes back

  374. to the resurrection,

  375. which I'm not going to spend

  376. very much time on.

  377. But, you know,

  378. I'll just share with you,

  379. I've had different times

  380. in my life,

  381. especially in the first

  382. ten years of my Christian life,

  383. where I almost left

  384. the Christian faith.

  385. You know, I have a degree

  386. in sociology

  387. with a minor in philosophy.

  388. I only have studied

  389. with non-Christian professors.

  390. I've never had

  391. an evangelical professor.

  392. For any of my first degree

  393. and my other types

  394. of post-graduate work

  395. and my graduate degree,

  396. I've always had

  397. non-Christian professors.

  398. And I've had times

  399. where I almost gave up my faith.

  400. Just as I, you know,

  401. you really just,

  402. you get filled with the weight

  403. of criticism.

  404. And it can sometimes be very,

  405. it was sometimes

  406. very, very hard.

  407. And I'd pray,

  408. and I'd do reading,

  409. and I would do research.

  410. But I have never yet seen

  411. any good account

  412. for the start

  413. of the Christian faith

  414. that actually can deal

  415. with the facts

  416. in a reasonable way.

  417. You know,

  418. in our,

  419. just during the last election,

  420. one of the big cries

  421. is that you wanted

  422. evidence-based policy,

  423. evidence-based thinking.

  424. That was one of the big things

  425. that supposedly,

  426. I'm not making a political comment

  427. one way or the other,

  428. the conservatives

  429. didn't believe

  430. in evidence-based policy.

  431. Whether you,

  432. you know,

  433. that's a separate matter.

  434. I'm not going to comment

  435. on that at all.

  436. But, you know,

  437. unless you're a person

  438. who just says,

  439. on no condition,

  440. no matter what actually happens,

  441. it's just absolutely

  442. completely impossible

  443. that anything in the book

  444. of,

  445. that any of the eyewitness

  446. accounts of Jesus

  447. are possibly true,

  448. if it's just rejected,

  449. using the philosophical term

  450. a priori,

  451. you just reject it

  452. completely and utterly

  453. as not even being

  454. worth considering.

  455. And you just say

  456. it's completely and utterly wrong.

  457. Unless you're,

  458. if you're actually willing

  459. to look at the evidence,

  460. the evidence is very,

  461. very, very strong.

  462. And there's,

  463. I have never seen

  464. a good account

  465. to account for Christian origins

  466. apart from

  467. this astounding claim

  468. that Jesus really did die

  469. on a Friday afternoon,

  470. that he was

  471. physically just known

  472. to be dead,

  473. that the thrust

  474. of the spear,

  475. the partial embalming,

  476. the seal on the tomb,

  477. and that on the third day,

  478. the tomb is empty,

  479. even though it was

  480. guarded by soldiers,

  481. and that Jesus appears

  482. alive to a whole range

  483. of witnesses

  484. over 40 days.

  485. And I,

  486. there's been no account

  487. that deals with the,

  488. there's no other account

  489. that deals with the evidence

  490. of the explosive growth

  491. of the Christian faith

  492. in the very city

  493. where Jesus died,

  494. where all anybody had to do

  495. was show the body.

  496. And the explosive growth,

  497. despite persecution,

  498. despite jailing,

  499. it's a complete opposite

  500. of the,

  501. of,

  502. of Islamic origins

  503. that are closely tied,

  504. Islamic origins

  505. are closely tied

  506. to military victory.

  507. Christianity suffers

  508. complete and utter

  509. the,

  510. the weight,

  511. the unrelated,

  512. lenting weight

  513. of the state

  514. and the military

  515. against it,

  516. and the explosive growth

  517. on the claim

  518. of an empty tomb

  519. and a real resurrection,

  520. and there has never been,

  521. I have not seen

  522. an account

  523. that can deal

  524. with the evidence.

  525. I just never have.

  526. And that's,

  527. it's because of that

  528. that these other types

  529. of claims

  530. that I think

  531. we need to take them

  532. very seriously.

  533. And,

  534. and the claim

  535. that we can't take

  536. this very seriously,

  537. this whole thing

  538. of a,

  539. of the worldview,

  540. there's a very,

  541. very simple mistake

  542. that people make

  543. when they say that.

  544. They,

  545. they,

  546. sometimes they might

  547. be well-meaning,

  548. sometimes,

  549. like my friend,

  550. they were just trying

  551. to embarrass me.

  552. But,

  553. Christians believe,

  554. I mean,

  555. this is a bit of a

  556. theology geek moment,

  557. like a bit of time out,

  558. theology geeks,

  559. okay,

  560. time out for theology geeks.

  561. But,

  562. the Christian claim

  563. is that it's the words

  564. of the Bible

  565. that are inspired.

  566. It's the words,

  567. the words that God

  568. wanted written

  569. are the words

  570. that were put down.

  571. The Bible doesn't

  572. make the claim,

  573. Christians haven't

  574. made the claim,

  575. that God scanned

  576. the earth and thought,

  577. you know what,

  578. the most brilliant

  579. person ever is Luke,

  580. so I'm going to have

  581. Luke write it.

  582. And,

  583. and the most mystical

  584. person and holy

  585. person ever is John.

  586. I'm going to have

  587. John write it.

  588. Oh,

  589. and look at Mark.

  590. Mark,

  591. whoa,

  592. IQ through the roof,

  593. you know?

  594. No.

  595. The Bible,

  596. in fact,

  597. God,

  598. the consistent record

  599. of the Bible

  600. is that God chooses

  601. the weak and the foolish

  602. to shame the strong.

  603. He wasn't looking

  604. for the guys

  605. with the highest IQs.

  606. And that's a bit

  607. of a put down

  608. for us,

  609. by the way,

  610. okay?

  611. We're not the highest

  612. IQs in the city

  613. of Ottawa.

  614. If you think you are,

  615. a few marks off

  616. your IQ right there.

  617. And,

  618. and so,

  619. what the Bible says

  620. is that,

  621. that,

  622. okay,

  623. you know what it says?

  624. It's very chaste.

  625. Look at verse 9 again.

  626. Look at verse 9.

  627. It's a very chaste

  628. description

  629. of what happens.

  630. The whole account

  631. of the ascension,

  632. what goes on,

  633. the few verses before,

  634. which we're going to

  635. look at in a moment,

  636. the few verses after

  637. give you interpretation

  638. and context,

  639. okay?

  640. But the actual event,

  641. look how simple it is.

  642. And when he had said

  643. these things

  644. as they were looking on,

  645. he was lifted up

  646. and the cloud

  647. took him out of their sight.

  648. It's very,

  649. very discreet.

  650. Now,

  651. you know what?

  652. It might very well be

  653. that if we went back

  654. in a time machine

  655. and we knew how to speak

  656. to the apostles,

  657. we'd mastered their language,

  658. that if we were going back,

  659. afterwards as they were going back

  660. to their next place,

  661. they might actually,

  662. each one of them

  663. might literally have thought,

  664. whoa,

  665. you know,

  666. the world is like

  667. the Ottawa Little Theater

  668. and God is on the roof

  669. and God pulled Jesus,

  670. and that might be

  671. what they think.

  672. I mean,

  673. that might be

  674. what they think.

  675. But you know,

  676. one of the things

  677. which is so wonderful

  678. about the Bible

  679. is that none of this

  680. is actually in the Bible.

  681. Like all their views

  682. about how the world worked,

  683. all their views

  684. on what we would now call

  685. astronomy and physics,

  686. it's not there in the Bible.

  687. Part of the power

  688. of the Bible

  689. as God's inspired word

  690. is what's not in it.

  691. And you know,

  692. we should be so glad

  693. that what is in it right now

  694. doesn't accord

  695. with what we say

  696. in 2016,

  697. because the fact

  698. of the matter is

  699. is that if Jesus

  700. tarries in 2416,

  701. the science

  702. that we now hold,

  703. they will laugh at.

  704. So that if the Bible

  705. was written in such a way

  706. of somehow or another

  707. that God had magically

  708. given the apostles

  709. an understanding

  710. of physics and astronomy

  711. that would match 2016,

  712. it would just make it ridiculous

  713. in a hundred years' time.

  714. You see,

  715. part of the power

  716. of the Bible

  717. is all the things

  718. that are kept out.

  719. Here's another thing.

  720. This actually is something,

  721. and you know,

  722. maybe science will come up

  723. with something

  724. a little bit different.

  725. You see,

  726. the possibility,

  727. it is making

  728. an astounding claim.

  729. What the text is saying

  730. is that Jesus

  731. started to rise.

  732. And that as he started

  733. to rise,

  734. a cloud comes

  735. and obscures him.

  736. Now,

  737. if you've read Luke,

  738. you'll know that

  739. at the end

  740. of the transfiguration,

  741. the cloud comes

  742. and obscures Jesus

  743. and everything

  744. that's going on.

  745. They're in a cloud.

  746. And if you've read

  747. the Old Testament,

  748. there's a cloud

  749. that leads the people

  750. of Israel by day.

  751. And if you read

  752. the Old Testament,

  753. you know that

  754. the Shekinah,

  755. the glory,

  756. the cloud comes

  757. and settles on the temple,

  758. that there's different times

  759. when the cloud

  760. is a very,

  761. very chaste way

  762. of describing

  763. the presence

  764. of God's glory

  765. and how,

  766. as God's glory

  767. comes,

  768. it's as if

  769. we can no longer

  770. see God's glory

  771. because our unfallen,

  772. our fallen eyes

  773. cannot behold

  774. unfallen realities.

  775. But rather than

  776. trying to do it

  777. the way

  778. Steven Spielberg

  779. would do it,

  780. the Jewish people

  781. under the inspiration

  782. of the Holy Spirit

  783. give a very chaste,

  784. simple description.

  785. And so what we see

  786. is that Jesus

  787. is rising,

  788. the cloud,

  789. the Shekinah glory

  790. comes and no longer

  791. can Jesus be seen.

  792. And we can just imagine

  793. that Peter and John

  794. and James,

  795. they elbow the others

  796. and say,

  797. we've seen something

  798. like this before.

  799. The cloud's going to go away

  800. and it's just going to be

  801. Jesus only.

  802. But the cloud fades,

  803. they're looking up,

  804. waiting to see Jesus only

  805. and Jesus is gone.

  806. Christians believe,

  807. you want to know

  808. something which is

  809. really cool?

  810. And I have to be careful.

  811. I'm going to be saying

  812. a few things about physics

  813. and all next week.

  814. I know there's at least

  815. one real physicist

  816. in the room,

  817. so I'm always a bit nervous

  818. anything I say about physics.

  819. But what I understand

  820. about,

  821. one of the things

  822. I've understood

  823. about physics is that,

  824. and this is mind-blowing,

  825. is that space is curved.

  826. Like,

  827. I always just sort of thought

  828. that space,

  829. like if you were able

  830. to get like a laser,

  831. like some unbelievably

  832. powerful type of laser

  833. that would never turn,

  834. would just go straight

  835. and somehow could withstand

  836. gravitational pull

  837. so that if you pointed it

  838. at a black spot in the sky,

  839. it would just go on

  840. forever and ever

  841. and ever and ever

  842. and ever and ever

  843. and ever and ever

  844. and ever and ever

  845. because space just goes on

  846. forever and ever

  847. and ever and ever.

  848. But you know what physicists say?

  849. That if you had that,

  850. if you had that,

  851. that laser

  852. and it could point in,

  853. it would never vary,

  854. it would never go anything

  855. other than straight

  856. and it would never be affected

  857. by gravitational pulls,

  858. that if I did it like this

  859. and it could speed time up,

  860. it would hit me

  861. in the back of the head.

  862. That's what physics teach.

  863. Space is curved.

  864. Isn't that freaky?

  865. And so what the Bible teaches

  866. is that everything that we know,

  867. all of space and time

  868. was created by God.

  869. Just imagine,

  870. I'm not God,

  871. but just imagine I'm God.

  872. This is space and time,

  873. all of the created order.

  874. It's this tennis ball.

  875. And God is outside of it.

  876. There was a really,

  877. really wonderful debate

  878. slash dialogue the other night

  879. and right up here,

  880. the philosophy professor

  881. from the University of Toronto

  882. who was the atheist,

  883. you could almost see him

  884. just going like this,

  885. like, you know,

  886. how on earth could there possibly

  887. be a God who's created all things?

  888. Like, what was he doing before?

  889. Like, was he just sort of

  890. sitting around waiting

  891. and he just sort of like

  892. with a little bit of a grin

  893. on his face?

  894. The fact of the matter is

  895. is that space and time

  896. is created.

  897. It's on the ball.

  898. Time doesn't apply to God.

  899. Just as if you're watching,

  900. you know,

  901. Downton Abbey

  902. or watching something on Netflix

  903. and we're outside of it,

  904. the time that's going on

  905. in the show,

  906. that's completely different than us.

  907. Just a very smart way.

  908. And all of creation

  909. is like this tennis ball.

  910. It's even curved

  911. because who on earth

  912. can get their mind

  913. around the fact

  914. that space is curved?

  915. And God is outside of it.

  916. Time doesn't apply to him.

  917. And what the Bible text

  918. is just saying

  919. is that Jesus,

  920. who lived with body and soul,

  921. that he entered,

  922. in a sense,

  923. this tennis ball.

  924. He entered the realm

  925. of space and time,

  926. the credit order.

  927. And he did all the things

  928. that he did

  929. to ultimately save us,

  930. that at some point in time,

  931. the resurrection appearances

  932. come to an end,

  933. which is part of the point

  934. of the ascension.

  935. And Jesus leaves space and time

  936. and body and soul,

  937. he goes outside of space and time

  938. where God is.

  939. And if you say,

  940. well, how on earth

  941. does that work?

  942. Then all I can say

  943. is what Paul says

  944. in 1 Corinthians 15.

  945. You fool.

  946. How on earth

  947. can we possibly talk

  948. about what existence

  949. is like

  950. outside of space and time?

  951. You know,

  952. we can't even,

  953. it's a famous problem

  954. in philosophy

  955. that you can't even

  956. talk about time

  957. without using

  958. an analogy

  959. of distance and length.

  960. Isn't that freaky?

  961. I think that's mind-blowing.

  962. So how on earth

  963. could God use

  964. any words

  965. that would mean

  966. anything to our minds

  967. framed by space and time

  968. as to what it's like

  969. for the God,

  970. the Son of God,

  971. body and soul,

  972. to leave space and time

  973. to be where there is

  974. no space and time

  975. where God is?

  976. I don't know what that means.

  977. But one day I will.

  978. I will.

  979. Now,

  980. that's all pretty cool.

  981. But you know what?

  982. For some people,

  983. just hearing what I've just said,

  984. all it would do

  985. is create fear within them.

  986. I just saw this

  987. really spectacular quote

  988. in the paper the other day.

  989. It was quoting

  990. a Canadian academic.

  991. It was written by,

  992. the article was by

  993. a non-Christian,

  994. really very,

  995. very, very, very

  996. deeply thoughtful guy.

  997. I love reading him.

  998. And he was talking about

  999. this new work

  1000. by a Canadian

  1001. teaching the States

1002. trying to talk about terrorism.

  1003. And Andrew,

  1004. could you put up

  1005. the first note?

  1006. Hey, bien.

  1007. I'm going to,

  1008. this is a quote.

  1009. It's just NB

1010. because it's not my point,

  1011. although I've just

  1012. slightly adapted it.

  1013. Here's what I saw

  1014. in the paper

  1015. just recently.

  1016. If God is,

  1017. actually they use God

  1018. with a capital G

1019. and I demoted that God.

  1020. Sorry,

  1021. it's a Christian church,

  1022. so I demoted him.

  1023. it

  1024. for this purpose.

1025. But if God is on our side,

  1026. everyone else is godless

  1027. and worthy of death.

1028. If God is on our side,

  1029. everyone else is godless

  1030. and worthy of death.

  1031. Now,

  1032. in our bones,

  1033. we believe that.

  1034. I mean,

1035. for a lot of people

  1036. in our culture,

  1037. if I,

  1038. the more you come

  1039. to prove that Jesus

  1040. might actually have risen

  1041. from the dead

1042. or that it's intellectually compelling,

  1043. for many of them,

  1044. it's not,

  1045. oh,

  1046. you know,

  1047. tune my heart

  1048. to sing thy praise,

1049. but a feeling of dread.

  1050. Now,

1051. this quote was in the context

  1052. of explaining

  1053. Islamic terrorism

  1054. or Islamists,

  1055. anyway,

  1056. you know,

  1057. I don't,

  1058. I'm not,

  1059. you know,

  1060. that terrorism

  1061. from that root,

  1062. but the fact is

  1063. he didn't say that.

  1064. He made it

1065. in a very general comment

  1066. and that for many,

  1067. many,

  1068. many,

  1069. many people

  1070. in our culture,

  1071. this is how

  1072. they view religion.

  1073. It's why,

  1074. no matter how compelling

  1075. arguments would be,

  1076. they do not want,

  1077. part of the reason

1078. they do not want it

  1079. to be true,

  1080. but let's be honest.

1081. If I was like God

1082. and I could do things

  1083. like God

1084. and get away with it,

  1085. people would die.

  1086. And I'm not

  1087. especially wicked.

  1088. I'm probably only

  1089. average wicked.

  1090. I think every single

  1091. one of you too,

1092. if you think about it,

  1093. my body count

  1094. might be way higher

  1095. than yours

  1096. because you're

  1097. a better person

  1098. than me.

  1099. And why is it

  1100. that we talk

  1101. about murderous looks?

  1102. And there is

  1103. something deeply

  1104. human

  1105. in this phrase.

  1106. That if I had

  1107. the power of God,

  1108. if I thought that

1109. God was on my side,

  1110. then those who

  1111. are the godless

  1112. are worthy of death.

  1113. And we would

  1114. kill some of them.

1115. I would kill some of them.

  1116. So would you.

  1117. There's something

  1118. very true

  1119. about that statement.

  1120. So,

  1121. and the other thing

  1122. about it was

1123. we have to be honest

  1124. is that some people

  1125. who call themselves

  1126. Christians

  1127. and maybe really

  1128. even are Christians

  1129. have acted

  1130. in this way.

1131. God is on their side.

  1132. The godless,

  1133. therefore,

  1134. are worthy of death.

  1135. So let's just look

  1136. a little bit here

  1137. at the Bible

  1138. and see

  1139. do Christians

  1140. need to be corrected

  1141. by modern academics,

  1142. by secular culture?

1143. Do we need to be

  1144. corrected?

  1145. Because if we get

  1146. too serious

  1147. in the Bible

  1148. it's only going to

  1149. cause deep problems.

  1150. Muslims.

  1151. I just read a very,

  1152. very fascinating book

  1153. by a former Muslim

1154. and one of the things

  1155. that he says

1156. is that part of the problem

  1157. right now going on

  1158. in Islam

  1159. it's by

  1160. Nabil Qureshi

  1161. and

  1162. is that

  1163. in Islam

  1164. there's the Quran

  1165. then there's the Hadith

  1166. and then there's Sharia

  1167. with fatwas

1168. that go along with it

1169. and all three of them

  1170. sort of govern

  1171. how Muslims

  1172. sort of understand

  1173. themselves

  1174. and that when people

  1175. are asking for Muslims

  1176. to go underneath

  1177. a reformation

  1178. the problem is

  1179. that the Quran

  1180. is vastly more

  1181. murderous and bloody

1182. than the other two sources.

  1183. In other words

  1184. he says

  1185. ISIS

  1186. is the reformation

  1187. and that for Quran

  1188. for Muslims

  1189. we need to hope

  1190. that the other sources

1191. which are far more humane

  1192. end up governing

  1193. and historically

  1194. have governed

  1195. how most actual Muslims

  1196. that you'd ever meet

  1197. actually would live

  1198. that those become

  1199. more powerful

  1200. but for Christians

1201. is it that as we get

1202. more closely into the Bible

1203. that this will be true?

  1204. Well let's look

1205. we stopped at verse 3

  1206. let's continue at verse 4

1207. and while staying with them

  1208. that was Jesus

  1209. and by the way

  1210. one of the words

  1211. for staying

  1212. that little simple sentence

  1213. could be translated

  1214. in three ways

  1215. by the way

  1216. in Greek

1217. and one of the ways

  1218. to translate it

1219. would be that he was

  1220. eating with them

  1221. like yet another proof

  1222. that he was actually

  1223. physically alive

  1224. he ordered them

  1225. not to depart

  1226. from Jerusalem

  1227. but to wait

  1228. for the promise

  1229. of the Father

  1230. for which he said

  1231. you heard from me

  1232. for John baptized

  1233. with water

  1234. but you will be

1235. baptized with the Holy Spirit

  1236. not many days

  1237. from now

  1238. and you know

1239. it might very well be

  1240. that for the apostles

  1241. they think

  1242. whoa

  1243. we're going to really

  1244. have power now

1245. now we're going to be able

1246. who knows what they thought

  1247. then verse 6

1248. so when they had come together

  1249. they asked him

1250. Lord will you at this time

1251. restore the kingdom of Israel

  1252. now when they're asking

  1253. in this question

  1254. they're basically asking

1255. God are you going to come

  1256. is Jesus

1257. are you going to become

  1258. the head of Israel

1259. and is Israel going to

  1260. basically take over

  1261. the world

1262. that all of the world

1263. will bow the knee to Israel

  1264. and by the way

  1265. when they're asking

  1266. this question

1267. if you read the gospels

1268. you know that they thought

  1269. they would all have

  1270. they weren't thinking

1271. they would be on the top

  1272. they weren't thinking

1273. they'd be the top dog

  1274. they were thinking

  1275. that Jesus would be

  1276. in the top chair

1277. but guess who would be

  1278. in the chair

  1279. just underneath them

  1280. them

  1281. and then Israel

  1282. and then the world

1283. so that's how they think

  1284. they're asking him

  1285. that question

  1286. verse 7

  1287. and if you think

1288. about it for a second

  1289. isn't that question

  1290. like this

  1291. that's implicit

  1292. in the question

  1293. something like that

  1294. God's on our side

  1295. those who are not

  1296. are godless

1297. and how does Jesus answer

  1298. he said to them

  1299. verse 7

1300. it is not for you

  1301. to know times

  1302. or seasons

  1303. that the father

  1304. has fixed

  1305. by his own authority

  1306. now just pause here

  1307. for a second

  1308. he basically ignores

  1309. the question

  1310. basically he's saying

  1311. that's not what's

  1312. going to happen

  1313. and the other thing

  1314. which is really

  1315. really significant here

  1316. is that it's not

  1317. just that people

  1318. people who think

1319. that God is on their

  1320. side

  1321. they also

  1322. you know

1323. the most of the death

  1324. in the 20th century

  1325. that's been caused

  1326. by tyranny

  1327. has been by people

  1328. who think that utopia

  1329. is on their side

  1330. that they've understood

  1331. the flow of history

  1332. and because they know

  1333. how history is going

  1334. to go

  1335. the workers

  1336. the peasants

  1337. the educated

  1338. that the people

  1339. who are Chinese

  1340. if you're in Vietnam

  1341. or whatever

  1342. the wrong groups

  1343. they can be put

  1344. to death

  1345. and Jesus here

  1346. is completely

  1347. rejecting

  1348. any type of

  1349. millennial

  1350. utopian knowledge

  1351. given to his people

  1352. Donald Trump

  1353. Hillary Clinton

  1354. Bernie Sanders

  1355. the person

  1356. who will serve you

  1357. coffee at Tim Hortons

  1358. and the next street

  1359. person

  1360. and me

  1361. all equally

  1362. know the future

  1363. as well as

  1364. the philosophy

  1365. faculty

  1366. and sociology

  1367. and psychology

  1368. and political

  1369. science faculty

  1370. and MBA faculty

  1371. University of Ottawa

  1372. and Carleton

  1373. we all equally

  1374. know the future

  1375. which is zero

  1376. the one thing

  1377. that Christians

  1378. know

  1379. is that Jesus

  1380. will return

  1381. beyond that

  1382. nada

  1383. that's

  1384. that's all we know

  1385. so you see

  1386. right here

  1387. that the biblical

  1388. text is starting

  1389. to cut the legs

  1390. out from that

  1391. human desire

  1392. expressed in that

  1393. quote

  1394. but it gets

  1395. even more

  1396. look at verse 8

  1397. but

  1398. okay

  1399. so we want

  1400. they want to have

  1401. political power

1402. and they want to have

  1403. knowledge of the future

  1404. Jesus says

1405. you're not going to have

  1406. either of those things

  1407. but

  1408. and I don't know

  1409. maybe they're going

  1410. okay but

  1411. there's going to be

  1412. something better

  1413. there's going to be

  1414. something better

  1415. you will receive

  1416. power when the

  1417. Holy Spirit

  1418. has come upon you

  1419. and you will be

  1420. my witnesses

  1421. in Jerusalem

  1422. and in all Judea

  1423. and Samaria

  1424. and to the end

  1425. of the earth

  1426. let's be honest

  1427. folks

  1428. for many of us

  1429. when we hear

  1430. that rather than

  1431. getting lots of

  1432. power and superior

  1433. knowledge

  1434. we just get the

  1435. Holy Spirit

  1436. we say we just

  1437. get the Holy Spirit

  1438. oh dang

  1439. I was hoping

  1440. for something

  1441. a bit better

  1442. let's just be honest

  1443. but Jesus

  1444. is giving us

  1445. something better

  1446. if we trust

  1447. him

  1448. in verse 9

  1449. and when he had

  1450. said these things

  1451. as they were

  1452. looking on

  1453. he was lifted up

  1454. and a cloud

  1455. took him out

  1456. of their sight

  1457. and while they

  1458. were gazing

  1459. into heaven

  1460. as he went

  1461. behold

  1462. two men

  1463. stood by them

  1464. in white robes

  1465. their angels

  1466. and said

  1467. men of Galilee

  1468. why do you stand

  1469. looking into heaven

  1470. this Jesus

  1471. by the way

1472. this is going to be

  1473. really significant

  1474. because it introduces

  1475. a phrase

  1476. that's going to be

  1477. all the way

  1478. through the rest

1479. of the book of Acts

  1480. and all the way

1481. through the book of Acts

  1482. constantly

  1483. the apostles say

  1484. this same Jesus

  1485. whom you crucified

  1486. it's tying it

  1487. to the entire

  1488. book of Luke

  1489. this Jesus

  1490. okay I'll explain

  1491. the significance

  1492. in a moment

  1493. this Jesus

  1494. who was taken up

  1495. from you into heaven

  1496. will come

  1497. in the same way

  1498. as you saw him

  1499. go into heaven

  1500. could you put up

  1501. the first point

  1502. as the next point

  1503. Andrew

  1504. here's what the

  1505. Bible's trying to teach

1506. this is one of the

  1507. reasons why this

  1508. deep fear that we

  1509. have in our culture

  1510. that the Bible

  1511. the Christian faith

  1512. that what Jesus does

  1513. it completely

  1514. undermines it

  1515. because you see

  1516. the cultural

  1517. expectation we have

  1518. in our culture

  1519. is that if

1520. if I was like God

  1521. people would die

  1522. that is so deeply

  1523. rooted in our culture

  1524. that if

  1525. in what it means

  1526. to be a human

1527. that if I was God

1528. if I was like God

  1529. if I had God

  1530. in my pocket

  1531. if I could walk

  1532. around and God

  1533. was right with me

  1534. and he would do

  1535. whatever I wanted

1536. because he is my ally

  1537. people would die

  1538. and we cannot

  1539. understand

  1540. that the God

  1541. who really does

  1542. live and exist

  1543. and he saw human

  1544. beings like you

  1545. and me

  1546. and he decided

  1547. he would die

  1548. out of love

  1549. for us

  1550. and what we're

  1551. seeing here

  1552. with the end

  1553. of the ascension

  1554. is we see this

  1555. one powerful

  1556. act of grace

  1557. by one person

  1558. to redeem

  1559. every person

  1560. who receives him

  1561. by faith alone

  1562. what we have to

  1563. understand

  1564. is that it's all

  1565. just one mighty

  1566. act of God

  1567. Philippians 2

  1568. 5 to 11

  1569. puts it all

  1570. in a very very

  1571. wonderful way

  1572. and it's God

  1573. the son of God

  1574. and he sees

  1575. profound human need

  1576. he sees the murder

  1577. in our hearts

  1578. he sees the desire

1579. for us to be God

  1580. in our hearts

1581. and seeing who we are

  1582. as we really are

  1583. he sets aside

  1584. his glory

  1585. and divine prerogatives

  1586. and it's one mighty

  1587. act to save us

  1588. created in the womb

  1589. of the virgin Mary

  1590. taking into himself

  1591. our human nature

  1592. even such unbelievably

  1593. frail and weak

  1594. human nature

1595. as what a human being

1596. is like in the womb

  1597. of a woman

  1598. taking that into himself

  1599. without giving up

  1600. being God

  1601. and going through

  1602. the process of birth

1603. and living as a child

1604. and living as a lower

  1605. working class person

  1606. in an oppressed

  1607. people group

  1608. and doing his three

  1609. years of teaching

  1610. in his sinless life

  1611. it's all one mighty

  1612. act of God

  1613. and his death

  1614. upon the cross

  1615. where God himself

  1616. dies for humanity

1617. that wants to be God

  1618. and he sees

  1619. we cannot leave ourselves

  1620. and he dies

  1621. for us

  1622. God himself

  1623. as Jesus

  1624. as man

  1625. dies

  1626. for you

  1627. and me

  1628. and then

  1629. he tastes

  1630. all there is

  1631. to taste of death

  1632. and then he rises

  1633. from the dead

  1634. on the third day

  1635. and then he ascends

  1636. into heaven

  1637. it is one

  1638. mighty act

  1639. of grace

  1640. one mighty act

  1641. of God

  1642. to redeem

  1643. any

  1644. who put their faith

  1645. and trust in him

  1646. and it completely

  1647. subverts

  1648. to use modern

  1649. post-modern language

  1650. it completely

  1651. deconstructs

  1652. and subverts

  1653. the fear

  1654. and desires

  1655. of our heart

  1656. if we are but

  1657. willing to recognize

  1658. that they are there

  1659. within us

  1660. the other day

1661. and that's by the way

  1662. that's why we don't need

  1663. secular philosophy

  1664. to improve

  1665. Christianity

  1666. what we just need

  1667. is to be gripped

  1668. by the gospel

  1669. Jesus calls us

  1670. to be witnesses

  1671. not rulers

  1672. and by the way

  1673. that's a wonderful

  1674. wonderful comfort

  1675. so I've shared

  1676. with you

  1677. there are many times

  1678. too many times

  1679. for me to share

  1680. with you

  1681. when I've tried

  1682. they know I'm a Christian

  1683. and people

  1684. it's almost as if

  1685. some people

1686. this is not a bad thing

  1687. it's a good thing

  1688. it's almost as if

  1689. they're waiting

1690. for me to come in

  1691. because they've got

  1692. an objection

  1693. to the Christian faith

  1694. that they don't think

1695. I'll be able to beat

  1696. and sometimes

1697. I am not an apologetic ninja

  1698. I don't go

  1699. oh yeah

1700. and then karate chop them

  1701. and just

  1702. aha beat them

  1703. I am

  1704. Bible here isn't saying

1705. I am going to make you

  1706. apologetic ninjas

  1707. who will destroy

  1708. every single argument

1709. that ever comes your way

1710. no it doesn't say that

  1711. the power comes

  1712. from the Holy Spirit

1713. that's where all the power

  1714. comes from

  1715. I just want you

  1716. to be witnesses

  1717. not ninjas

  1718. witnesses

  1719. the word is martyr

  1720. the word is martyr

1721. now just the other day

  1722. I was coming into

  1723. I have to

1724. I have to be careful

  1725. here at my time

  1726. I came into

  1727. one of my favorite

  1728. coffee shops

  1729. and

1730. a person was telling me

  1731. about their

1732. I guess their latest theory

  1733. and

  1734. and she has a

  1735. science degree

  1736. and

  1737. completely non-Christian

  1738. really really

  1739. you know

  1740. a nice young woman

  1741. and

  1742. and

  1743. for some reason

1744. she wanted to share with me

  1745. that the only value

  1746. that human beings have

  1747. is that the energy

  1748. that is within them

  1749. and

1750. and that when they die

1751. the only value we have

  1752. is the energy

  1753. that we release

  1754. back

  1755. when we die

  1756. and

  1757. here's the thing

  1758. Andrew could you

  1759. let's read verses 9 and 11 again

1760. and when he had said these things

1761. as they were looking on

  1762. he was lifted up

  1763. in a cloud

1764. took him out of their sight

  1765. we'll just read verse 9

1766. Jesus is taken up into heaven

  1767. body and soul

1768. let's put this next point up

  1769. Andrew

  1770. the human person

  1771. body and soul

  1772. matters to God

  1773. so the person

  1774. body and soul

  1775. should matter to God's

  1776. redeemed people

1777. I mean the fact of the matter

1778. is it's actually sort of

  1779. very sad and tragic

  1780. and I didn't do a very good job

  1781. responding to

  1782. to this young woman

  1783. but it's sort of

  1784. very sad and tragic

  1785. to think that

1786. the only way we can

  1787. could conceive

1788. from a scientific point of view

1789. the value of a human being

  1790. is the energy

  1791. value in the body

  1792. and

1793. we don't really live that way

1794. because the fact of the matter

  1795. is if somebody

  1796. had slapped her

  1797. I'm sure she'd say

1798. how dare you treat me that way

  1799. if somebody had

  1800. you know

  1801. taken her wages

  1802. she'd work the hours

  1803. and then somebody else

  1804. had taken the wages

1805. or taken all the tips

  1806. she'd say

1807. how dare you treat me like that

  1808. and on one level

1809. we have this very fundamental sense

  1810. that there's a dignity

1811. and importance to human beings

  1812. and there's a dignity

1813. and value of human beings

  1814. but for people increasingly

  1815. in our culture

1816. we have no way of grounding

  1817. that in anything

1818. like one of the saddest things

  1819. about the conversation

  1820. between the atheist

  1821. and Os Guinness

  1822. last Sunday night

  1823. in this room

1824. was that he had no way

  1825. to actually account

  1826. for the value

1827. or dignity of human beings

  1828. or even their freedom

  1829. but look at this

  1830. this text

  1831. of the ascension

  1832. it's so wonderful

  1833. Jesus

  1834. body and soul

1835. goes to be with God

1836. outside of space and time

1837. it shows that the body

  1838. and what it means

  1839. to be a person

  1840. that it matters

  1841. and that's why

  1842. Christians throughout the ages

  1843. as they've been gripped

  1844. by the gospel

1845. not only do they want

1846. to go to the ends of the earth

  1847. to share the gospel

  1848. but we

  1849. that as you're gripped

  1850. by the gospel

1851. you know that being a person

  1852. matters body and soul

  1853. and that's why

  1854. historically Christians

  1855. they want to

1856. they want to start hospitals

1857. they want to start hospices

1858. they want to start schools

  1859. they want to

  1860. people who don't have

  1861. have language

  1862. but no writing

1863. they want to give them writing

1864. they want to give them

  1865. the gift of books

1866. and the gift of learning

1867. and they've been at the

  1868. and it's why Christians

1869. you know Martin Luther King

1870. and the whole civil rights movement

  1871. and William Stringfellow

1872. and the abolition of slavery

  1873. and how Christians

  1874. and you know

1875. the birth of some basic

  1876. social care issues

  1877. in Canada

1878. which came out of the

  1879. you know

  1880. out of the

  1881. you know

  1882. out of the

  1883. Manitoba

  1884. and Christians

  1885. it's

  1886. there's a concern

  1887. for justice

  1888. for treating people right

  1889. for treating people well

  1890. for the abol

  1891. the body matters

  1892. the person matters

  1893. and because of that

  1894. justice matters

  1895. and feeding people

  1896. matters

  1897. and it's rooted

  1898. in Jesus

1899. it's rooted in the gospel

  1900. as we're gripped

  1901. by the gospel

  1902. we will have

  1903. a greater concern

  1904. for the integrity

  1905. and the value

  1906. and the importance

  1907. of a person

  1908. body and soul

  1909. and in fact

  1910. as well as that

  1911. like you know

  1912. the well-meaning people

  1913. who try to say

  1914. that Jesus didn't ascend

  1915. bodily into heaven

  1916. and didn't

  1917. in 1 Corinthians 15

1918. Jesus had a spiritual body

  1919. and they're

  1920. they're very well-meaning

  1921. but sometimes

  1922. they're often very well-meaning

  1923. sometimes they're not

  1924. sometimes they're just

  1925. being troublesome

  1926. and mischievous

  1927. but they're potentially

  1928. well-meaning

  1929. and they don't understand

  1930. that the 1 Corinthians 15

  1931. isn't saying

  1932. that somehow

  1933. Jesus' body

  1934. became just spirit

  1935. yet the spiritual body

  1936. means

  1937. you know

  1938. my body

  1939. and my spirit

  1940. and my mind

  1941. often don't work together

  1942. like I wake up

  1943. in the morning

1944. and I'd like to be

  1945. a go up

  1946. get up

  1947. and get them

  1948. but my knees

  1949. just don't agree

  1950. I used to be

  1951. when I was young

  1952. I could get up

  1953. in the morning

  1954. go for a run

1955. I need to be up

  1956. like for an hour

  1957. and a half

  1958. two hours

  1959. just to get the

  1960. things moving

  1961. you know

  1962. my mind

  1963. wants to do

  1964. something

  1965. my soul

  1966. wants to do

  1967. something

  1968. my body

  1969. just doesn't

  1970. agree

  1971. gets in the way

  1972. and the spiritual

  1973. body is saying

  1974. that the actual

  1975. body is so

  1976. completely at one

  1977. with God

  1978. with a redeemed

  1979. spirit

  1980. and so

  1981. when a spiritual

  1982. body

  1983. is being taken

  1984. up into heaven

  1985. it means that

  1986. Jesus is triumphant

  1987. not only over

  1988. all evil things

  1989. but creation

  1990. itself

  1991. which no

  1992. longer is the

  1993. way that it

  1994. should be

  1995. that create

  1996. the created

  1997. order itself

  1998. is drawn up

  1999. into heaven

  2000. which is why

  2001. it is that

  2002. Christians

  2003. gripped by the

  2004. gospel would

  2005. care for the

  2006. environment

  2007. and would care

  2008. whether animals

  2009. are treated

  2010. cruelly

  2011. because the

  2012. entire created

  2013. order matters

  2014. and is brought

  2015. up into

  2016. heaven

  2017. to be

  2018. with Jesus

  2019. and one final

  2020. thing in

  2021. closing

  2022. this is an

  2023. adaptation by

  2024. David Foster

  2025. Wallace

  2026. and it just

  2027. struck me

  2028. recently

  2029. could you put

  2030. up this

  2031. thing

  2032. I've just

  2033. slightly changed

  2034. something that

  2035. he said

  2036. most of the

  2037. big things in

  2038. my life do

  2039. not love me

  2040. that is

  2041. really true

  2042. you know I

  2043. was listening to

  2044. the radio a

  2045. little while ago

  2046. and somebody

  2047. commented about

  2048. how they just

  2049. before they knew

  2050. it they'd

  2051. wasted five

  2052. hours looking

  2053. at funny cat

  2054. videos on

  2055. YouTube

  2056. and I'm sure

  2057. nobody here in

  2058. this room has

  2059. ever done

  2060. anything even

  2061. remotely like

  2062. that

  2063. and if you

  2064. think about it

  2065. for five hours

  2066. the biggest thing

  2067. in your life

  2068. was looking at

  2069. a screen

  2070. and the

  2071. people who

  2072. invented all of

  2073. that none of

  2074. them love you

  2075. and it just

  2076. left you being

  2077. alone

  2078. and now some

  2079. of us some

  2080. of you have

  2081. young babies

  2082. and gosh they

  2083. love you

  2084. so it's not

  2085. that everything

  2086. that's a big

  2087. thing in your

  2088. life doesn't

  2089. love you

  2090. but you know

  2091. how many of us

  2092. give ourselves

  2093. to politics

  2094. how many of

  2095. us give

  2096. ourselves to

  2097. culture

  2098. how many of

  2099. us give

  2100. ourselves to

  2101. money

  2102. how many of

  2103. us give

  2104. ourselves to

  2105. career

  2106. how many of

  2107. us give

  2108. ourselves to

  2109. the university

  2110. how many of

  2111. us give

  2112. ourselves to

  2113. Netflix

  2114. and none of

  2115. these things

  2116. there are big

  2117. things in our

  2118. life and none

  2119. of them love

  2120. you

  2121. and that doesn't

  2122. even count the

  2123. fact that we

  2124. get

  2125. death's a big

  2126. thing sickness

  2127. is a big thing

  2128. being alone is a

  2129. big thing

  2130. enemies are big

  2131. things

  2132. things and

  2133. often if we

  2134. are honest

  2135. we seem like

  2136. small little

  2137. things in a

  2138. world of big

  2139. things and if

  2140. we are honest

  2141. most of those

  2142. big things

  2143. don't love

  2144. us

  2145. and this

  2146. story of the

  2147. ascension of

  2148. Jesus tells a

  2149. completely different

  2150. way for those

  2151. who are followers

  2152. of Jesus to

  2153. begin to learn

  2154. to live

  2155. if you could

  2156. put up the

  2157. point Andrew

  2158. the real

  2159. true

  2160. living Lord

  2161. of costly

  2162. love

  2163. is vastly

  2164. bigger

  2165. than any

  2166. big thing

  2167. in my

  2168. life

  2169. verses 8

  2170. to 11

  2171. and if you

  2172. read through

  2173. the gospels

  2174. and read

  2175. through the

  2176. New Testament

  2177. one of the

  2178. things you'll

  2179. understand about

  2180. the Holy Spirit

  2181. is that the

  2182. Holy Spirit

  2183. is God

  2184. himself

  2185. the third

  2186. person of

  2187. the Trinity

  2188. and one way

  2189. to understand

  2190. the Holy Spirit

  2191. is the

  2192. everlasting

  2193. love of

  2194. the Father

  2195. to the Son

  2196. and the Son

  2197. to the Father

  2198. and that

  2199. everlasting

  2200. progression of

  2201. love is one

  2202. way to

  2203. understand the

  2204. Holy Spirit

  2205. himself

  2206. that the

  2207. coming of

  2208. the Holy Spirit

  2209. into our lives

  2210. is the coming

  2211. of love

  2212. into our lives

  2213. it's coming

  2214. into our lives

  2215. of the very

  2216. very same

  2217. power that

  2218. created the

  2219. universe that

  2220. rose Jesus

  2221. from the

  2222. dead

  2223. you know

  2224. what we'll

  2225. see with the

  2226. day of

  2227. Pentecost is

  2228. that the

  2229. Holy Spirit

  2230. comes upon

  2231. God's people

  2232. in a new

  2233. and powerful

  2234. way

  2235. you know

  2236. if you've

  2237. ever seen

  2238. the movie

  2239. The Lord

  2240. of the Rings

  2241. there's this

  2242. wonderful scene

  2243. towards the

  2244. end where

  2245. the orcs

  2246. are attacking

  2247. can't remember

  2248. the place

  2249. and they know

  2250. they're going

  2251. to win

  2252. and one orc

  2253. says out

  2254. loud

  2255. the age of

  2256. men have

  2257. ended

  2258. the age of

  2259. orcs have

  2260. begun

  2261. and of course

  2262. they're wrong

  2263. but

  2264. when we

  2265. read here

  2266. in verse

  2267. 8

  2268. we're seeing

  2269. that God

  2270. is saying

  2271. the age

  2272. of the

  2273. Holy Spirit

  2274. has begun

  2275. the age

  2276. of witness

  2277. has begun

  2278. the in

  2279. between

  2280. time

  2281. between

  2282. Jesus

  2283. ascending

  2284. into heaven

  2285. and his

  2286. coming

  2287. again

  2288. that time

  2289. has begun

  2290. listen to

  2291. verse 8

  2292. but you

  2293. will receive

  2294. power

  2295. when the

  2296. Holy Spirit

  2297. has come

  2298. upon you

  2299. and you

  2300. will be

  2301. my

  2302. witnesses

  2303. in Jerusalem

  2304. and in all

  2305. Judea and Samaria

  2306. and to the

  2307. ends of the

  2308. earth

  2309. and when he

  2310. had said

  2311. these things

  2312. as they were

  2313. looking on

  2314. he was lifted

  2315. up and a

  2316. cloud took

  2317. him out of

  2318. their sight

  2319. and while

  2320. they were

  2321. gazing into

  2322. heaven

  2323. as he

  2324. went

  2325. behold

  2326. two men

  2327. stood

  2328. by them

  2329. in white

  2330. robes

  2331. and said

  2332. men of

  2333. Galilee

  2334. why do

  2335. you stand

  2336. looking

  2337. into

  2338. heaven

  2339. this

  2340. Jesus

  2341. this

  2342. Jesus

  2343. who has

  2344. taken up

  2345. from you

  2346. into heaven

  2347. will come

  2348. away

  2349. come

  2350. again

  2351. will come

  2352. in the

  2353. same way

  2354. as you

  2355. saw him

  2356. go

  2357. into

  2358. heaven

  2359. we

  2360. Christians

  2361. need to

  2362. learn

  2363. that Jesus

  2364. is big

  2365. and everything

  2366. we face

  2367. is small

  2368. and it's

  2369. not that

  2370. he's made

  2371. me big

  2372. but that

  2373. the one

  2374. who's

  2375. ascended

  2376. in triumph

  2377. over all

  2378. principalities

  2379. and power

  2380. and he's

  2381. ascended

  2382. over heaven

  2383. in triumphant

  2384. grace

  2385. filled

  2386. triumph

  2387. that I

  2388. can go

  2389. through my

  2390. day

  2391. being held

  2392. by him

  2393. who's

  2394. bigger than

  2395. everything

  2396. I face

  2397. I can go

  2398. through my

  2399. days

  2400. and I can

  2401. be like

  2402. I don't

  2403. know

  2404. some of

  2405. the kids

  2406. who come

  2407. down for

  2408. communion

  2409. you'll

  2410. notice

  2411. they don't

  2412. come down

  2413. for

  2414. communion

  2415. I mean

  2416. they get

  2417. a blessing

  2418. not

  2419. communion

  2420. they come

  2421. down

  2422. on their

  2423. daddy's

  2424. shoulders

  2425. they're

  2426. the tallest

  2427. ones

  2428. in the

  2429. room

  2430. even though

  2431. they're only

  2432. two feet

  2433. tall

  2434. and that's

  2435. you and

  2436. me

  2437. when we're

  2438. with Jesus

  2439. we can go

  2440. through our

  2441. day on

  2442. Jesus'

  2443. shoulders

  2444. and he's

  2445. bigger than

  2446. anything we

  2447. face

  2448. he's bigger

  2449. than anything

  2450. you face

  2451. in your

  2452. past

  2453. that still

  2454. haunts

  2455. you

  2456. any

  2457. bigger than

  2458. any type

  2459. of addiction

  2460. he is

  2461. bigger

  2462. and we're

  2463. on his

  2464. shoulders

  2465. want to

  2466. just stand

  2467. please

  2468. Andrew

  2469. could you

  2470. put up

  2471. the prayer

  2472. to close

  2473. you know

  2474. the wonderful

  2475. thing about

  2476. all of

  2477. this

  2478. before we

  2479. say this

  2480. prayer

  2481. I'm going

  2482. to invite

  2483. you to

  2484. say this

  2485. prayer

  2486. with me

  2487. is

  2488. remember

  2489. I tried

  2490. to say

  2491. that

  2492. Luke

  2493. believes

  2494. and I

  2495. believe

  2496. and I

  2497. think

  2498. there's

  2499. good reason

  2500. to believe

  2501. that this

  2502. really

  2503. happened

  2504. so this

  2505. isn't

  2506. just a

  2507. pleasant

  2508. story

  2509. to please

  2510. you

  2511. this

  2512. isn't

  2513. like

  2514. you know

  2515. like

  2516. you hurt

  2517. your knee

  2518. and your

  2519. mommy

  2520. tells you

  2521. something

  2522. about how

  2523. if she

  2524. kisses

  2525. it's

  2526. going to

  2527. make it

  2528. better

  2529. but you

  2530. know

  2531. we all

  2532. know

  2533. that a

  2534. kiss

  2535. by a

  2536. mommy

  2537. doesn't

  2538. actually

  2539. make the

  2540. cut go

  2541. away

  2542. I mean

  2543. we know

  2544. that

  2545. right

  2546. and this

  2547. isn't

  2548. just like

  2549. a story

  2550. like this

  2551. is true

  2552. like this

  2553. really

  2554. happened

  2555. like Jesus

  2556. is really

  2557. present

  2558. he really

  2559. gives his

  2560. holy spirit

  2561. to ordinary

  2562. fallen

  2563. human beings

  2564. like you

  2565. and me

  2566. when we

  2567. put our

  2568. faith and

  2569. trust in

  2570. Jesus

  2571. and if

  2572. you have

  2573. never

  2574. given your

  2575. life to

  2576. Jesus

  2577. there is

  2578. no better

  2579. time

  2580. than today

  2581. to make

  2582. even this

  2583. prayer

  2584. your

  2585. conversion

  2586. prayer

  2587. please

  2588. pray it

  2589. with me

  2590. Lord

  2591. I

  2592. confess

  2593. that I

  2594. live my

  2595. life

  2596. as if

  2597. you are

  2598. small

  2599. and most

  2600. other things

  2601. in my

  2602. life

  2603. are big

  2604. please

  2605. make me

  2606. a disciple

  2607. of Jesus

  2608. gripped by

  2609. the gospel

  2610. living for

  2611. your glory

  2612. please

  2613. grow in

  2614. me a

  2615. deep

  2616. humble

  2617. habit of

  2618. being

  2619. and

  2620. habit of

  2621. action

  2622. where

  2623. you

  2624. are

  2625. big

  2626. and

  2627. everything

  2628. I

  2629. face

  2630. is

  2631. small

  2632. father

  2633. this

  2634. is

  2635. the

  2636. cry

  2637. of

  2638. our

  2639. hearts

  2640. make us

  2641. disciples

  2642. of Jesus

  2643. gripped by

  2644. the gospel

  2645. living for

  2646. your glory

  2647. father

  2648. help us

  2649. to not

  2650. desire

  2651. to tower

  2652. over

  2653. things

  2654. but to

  2655. bear witness

  2656. to live

  2657. for your

  2658. glory

  2659. to live

  2660. for the

  2661. good of

  2662. people

  2663. and for

  2664. your

  2665. great

  2666. glory

  2667. help

  2668. us

  2669. father

  2670. to

  2671. face

  2672. each

  2673. day

  2674. with

  2675. courage

  2676. and

  2677. humility

  2678. and

  2679. hope

  2680. knowing

  2681. how

  2682. big

  2683. our

  2684. savior

  2685. is

  2686. who

  2687. carries

  2688. us

  2689. that

  2690. he

  2691. is

  2692. vastly

  2693. bigger

  2694. than

  2695. even

  2696. the

  2697. biggest

  2698. thing

  2699. we

  2700. face

  2701. father

  2702. thank

  2703. you

  2704. and

  2705. all

  2706. God's

  2707. people

  2708. said

  2709. amen
