  1. Good morning, Watermark.

  2. And for those of you who don't know me, my name is Alfie, and I help out.

  3. I serve with the outreach that Watermark does on HKU's campus.

  4. And in case you haven't noticed, it's Advent time.

  5. It's Christmas season.

  6. We all have different traditions for remembering Christmas.

  7. In my family, Christmas always started on December 1st,

  8. which was my little sister's birthday.

  9. It would always start with her birthday party,

  10. and us bringing out the Christmas tree and putting on these decorations

  11. to remember and begin our preparation for the Christmas season,

  12. for the Christmas time.

  13. Now that I don't live with my parents and my sister anymore,

  14. about three years ago, I put a Christmas ornament on the door of my house,

  15. and it stayed there for the past three years.

  16. I haven't moved it and touched it.

  17. I guess I've been doing a lot of preparing for Christmas.

  18. But this Christmas, this Advent season, as a family,

  19. we're going to be preparing for Christmas by looking at this passage in Isaiah.

  20. And each week we'll be looking at a different part of Jesus' character.

  21. We'll be looking at who he is and why he calls out to us to trust him.

  22. The book of Isaiah was written about 800 years ago.

  23. Goodness, that's a lot of reverb.

  24. Can we do this?

  25. Am I standing wrongly?

  26. Isaiah was written about 800 years ago by this prophet.

  27. He lived in the southern kingdom of Judah,

  28. and he was calling out to these people to repent and turn back to God.

  29. If you want a summary of the book of Isaiah,

  30. you can read chapters 1 and 2,

  31. because it starts telling this story about how God has raised Israel

  32. like his own children,

  33. and he's given them so many good gifts.

  34. He's rescued them from slavery, but they still rebel.

  35. And because of that, God is bringing judgment.

  36. He's bringing judgment, but with that, he says he's going to fulfill a promise.

  37. He's going to bring hope.

  38. He's going to bring the light of a new kingdom

  39. that will come and will bring light and joy and hope to so many people.

  40. He says,

  41. to these people in darkness,

  42. to these people who are suffering under Assyria,

  43. who are away in Babylonian exile,

  44. he says,

  45. a child is coming,

  46. and his name will be Wonderful Counselor,

  47. Mighty God,

  48. Everlasting Father,

  49. and Prince of Peace.

  50. It's these four names that we'll be looking at

  51. over the next couple of weeks

  52. as we unpack what Christmas means

  53. and who Jesus is for us.

  54. That he isn't the kind of God that we take out at Christmastime,

  55. we put on our shelf,

  56. or we polish him off when we're in trouble.

  57. But every day, he's our savior.

  58. Every day, we need him.

  59. And today, we'll start by looking at Wonderful Counselor.

  60. Now, the difficulty with this kind of passage

  61. is that the word counselor has changed

  62. in the way that people use it

  63. over the past couple of years.

  64. If I was to say to you right now

  65. that you need to find a counselor,

  66. some of you will be outraged

  67. at the suggestion that something might be wrong with you.

  68. And others of you will say,

  69. actually, you know, I probably could use a counselor.

  70. But that's because we mostly think of a counselor

  71. as someone who's there to help us

  72. with our personal problems,

  73. with our psychological problems,

  74. who's there to therapize us.

  75. But the counselor described in this passage

  76. that's described in Isaiah is quite different.

  77. The word here, it kind of relates to advising and planning.

  78. Think of a royal advisor or, you know, a wise man.

  79. If it really helps you, you can think about Yoda

  80. or the Jedi Council in Star Wars

  81. who were there to advise the Galactic Empire

  82. on how to run their wisdom,

  83. to give younger Jedi wisdom that they didn't have

  84. because they lacked experience.

  85. A counselor in this passage,

  86. this wonderful counselor that Isaiah is talking about,

  87. is someone who comes and he gives wisdom.

  88. He teaches from his experience

  89. and he teaches from a place of knowing and seeing

  90. and understanding what is going on all around us.

  91. So as we're unpacking this wonderful counselor,

  92. I'm going to try to answer three questions.

  93. The first is, why do we need a counselor at all?

  94. The second, why do we need a wonderful counselor?

  95. And lastly, how is Jesus this great, wise,

  96. and wonderful counselor that we need?

  97. So why do we need a counselor?

  98. Think about your morning.

  99. What happened between you waking up

  100. and getting here today, this Sunday?

  101. For me, my alarm went off early

  102. because I wanted to go for a run.

  103. And I stayed in bed and I thought,

  104. oh, I really don't want to run.

  105. I should probably sleep.

  106. Then I remember that actually I'd said that

  107. the past couple of days

  108. and haven't been running for a while.

  109. So I got up and went on that run.

  110. I went on that run.

  111. I got home.

  112. I showered.

  113. I had a Snickers bar.

  114. I went to the community center.

  115. I printed off my notes.

  116. And I came here.

  117. It's fairly simple.

  118. If you're a young, single, childless guy like me,

  119. you don't really need a counselor

  120. to get from bed to church in the morning.

  121. But some of you guys here have young children.

  122. Some of you here have very sleepy teenagers.

  123. And getting into church on a Sunday,

  124. maybe you feel like you need a counselor.

  125. You need wisdom to figure out the mess

  126. of diapers and, you know, angsty teenagers

  127. before you get here on Sunday.

  128. Now, if you're here and you're young

  129. and, you know, your Sunday is very simple,

  130. get to know your family here.

  131. Get to know some of the young people,

  132. the young babies,

  133. and the parents that take care of them

  134. because they're your family as well.

  135. Now, I'm not going to get sidetracked

  136. talking about that.

  137. We're going to look at this counselor.

  138. We may not face it every day.

  139. I really didn't face it this morning.

  140. But at some point, we get to this place

  141. where we realize that we don't know

  142. which way we should take,

  143. what our next step forward should be.

  144. A singer, Bob Dylan, wrote a song about that.

  145. He says that he's got mixed-up confusion

  146. and it's killing him.

  147. There's way too many people

  148. and they're all too hard to please.

  149. He says that his head is full of questions

  150. and his temperature is rising fast.

  151. Well, I'm looking for some answers

  152. and I don't know who to ask.

  153. Bob Dylan was confused.

  154. Bob Dylan had questions.

  155. Bob Dylan needed to ask somebody for some help.

  156. You know, like Bob Dylan and like me,

  157. it's usually only when we don't know what to do

  158. that we realize we need help.

  159. When the things that we try don't work anymore.

  160. That we come to the realization

  161. that maybe we're not as wise as we think we are.

  162. Because most of the lives,

  163. we live under this delusion

  164. that we know what to do.

  165. We know how to make right decisions.

  166. We know how to go about our job

  167. and our family life

  168. and to deal with our relationships.

  169. And some of us even think

  170. that we've got it all together.

  171. We start giving out advice to different people.

  172. Thinking that because we've got

  173. this little part of our life in order

  174. that we can start telling everybody

  175. and adding confusion to their lives

  176. about how they should be doing it.

  177. We need counselors because we don't know.

  178. We need counselors because we don't have all the knowledge.

  179. We need counselors because we don't have the skill

  180. to deal with that knowledge

  181. to help us understand and interpret

  182. the world around us

  183. and our different situations

  184. that we're facing day by day, week by week.

  185. And it's not just us.

  186. King Ahaz, which you heard the scripture readings

  187. and the video that we had earlier in the service,

  188. he was the kind of person

  189. who needed a counselor as well.

  190. In the two chapters before this prophecy

  191. for a wonderful counselor,

  192. we see a king.

  193. Ahaz is a ruler.

  194. And he's a guy that people are looking to

  195. because he's in a position of authority.

  196. They look to him because he should be the one

  197. that has everything under control.

  198. But today, he doesn't.

  199. Today, he hears that the kings of Syria

  200. and the kings of Israel are coming

  201. and they intend to wage war against him,

  202. to kill him, and replace him with a puppet king.

  203. The Bible says that all of Judah,

  204. the king included,

  205. were shaking like trees in the wind.

  206. Now, I don't think anybody here today is a king.

  207. But we all face situations like this

  208. where we feel trapped,

  209. where we feel lost and confused.

  210. Earlier this year, I got my tax bill

  211. and I looked at it and the number was huge.

  212. They asked for money that was multiple times my salary

  213. and even if I did manage to pay it,

  214. I would have no more savings left

  215. and I'd be down to a couple of pieces of rice every day.

  216. I felt trapped.

  217. It was, I walked around in a daze for a few days

  218. just looking at this piece of paper wondering,

  219. okay, if I look hard enough,

  220. maybe the decimal point will move over

  221. and this won't be so bad.

  222. I felt trapped and I needed a counselor.

  223. I needed someone who could see more than what I was seeing,

  224. which was just lots and lots of zeros.

  225. I needed someone who would look at this

  226. and tell me, actually,

  227. this is the way you should be reading it.

  228. This is the way that you should be approaching this tax bill.

  229. The king Ahaz needed someone who was going to come

  230. and tell him that this is the way that you should look

  231. at this enemy that's coming on your doorstep.

  232. And each of us face situations

  233. where we need someone to show us

  234. and to tell us how it is

  235. that we can look at and interpret

  236. and understand what's going on in our day-to-day lives.

  237. When we feel trapped with a doctor's diagnosis,

  238. when we feel trapped with that phone call

  239. from your child's principal,

  240. when you feel trapped

  241. because your employer tells you

  242. that they simply can't afford to employ you anymore,

  243. we look at these situations

  244. where we're trapped and confused

  245. and we don't understand what's going on

  246. and we think that the situation

  247. is our biggest problem.

  248. We think that the situation that we're in

  249. is the thing that we need to fix,

  250. that we're going to devote our energy

  251. and our heart and our mind

  252. and everything that we can gather

  253. and our resources to fixing.

  254. But in Isaiah chapter 7,

    Isaiah 7 chapter mention

  255. God says something quite different.

  256. God says that what we need is we need faith.

  257. God tells King Ahaz

  258. that if your faith is not firm,

  259. you will not stand firm.

  260. If your trust isn't in me,

  261. then you can't deal with this enemy.

  262. In our trouble,

  263. God doesn't say

  264. that we need to fix our environment.

  265. He's a counselor that says,

  266. here's the big picture.

  267. Your feet are standing on jelly

  268. and you need a counselor

  269. who's going to look at this

  270. with your best interests at heart,

  271. who knows what is going on,

  272. who understands what is going on

  273. because he is a God

  274. who knows all and sees all

  275. that he has the wisdom

  276. and the experience

  277. and the knowledge

  278. to walk with us through it.

  279. To Ahaz, God says,

  280. let me be your counselor.

  281. God says,

  282. don't be afraid of these people

  283. because they're a dying fire.

  284. They don't know it,

  285. but their end is coming.

  286. And I'll give you a guarantee.

  287. I'll give you a promise.

  288. He said there would be a virgin

  289. who would give birth to a son,

  290. God with us.

  291. He says,

  292. when you're feeling like God is far away,

  293. when you're feeling trapped,

  294. God will be with you.

  295. We need counselors

  296. because we don't see

  297. that the situations that we enter

  298. are like a dying fire.

  299. They're temporary.

  300. They're not forever.

  301. We need a wonderful counselor

  302. because our arrogance says

  303. that we're going to figure out

  304. a way to do it ourselves,

  305. that we don't need to trust God.

  306. We don't need to put our faith in God.

  307. We're like a toddler

  308. who's trying to put on his shoes

  309. and is crying

  310. because he's trying to put his left shoe

  311. on his right foot

  312. and it's not fitting.

  313. And he's refusing to let

  314. mommy and daddy give him a hand.

  315. We need a counselor

  316. because sometimes we think

  317. that God is too close and interfering

  318. or he's too far off

  319. and he's untrustworthy.

  320. The reality is that

  321. God is not untrustworthy.

  322. It's that we are not trusting.

  323. God comes and he gives us a promise

  324. in Isaiah

  325. that God will be with us.

  326. that in those desperate moments

  327. that we are not alone,

  328. that he's bringing

  329. a counselor for us

  330. who will give wisdom

  331. and will shed light

  332. on what it is

  333. that we need to do.

  334. Why does the counselor

  335. we need

  336. have to be wonderful?

  337. Why does he have to be marvelous

  338. and without understanding?

  339. That's what the Hebrew word here means,

  340. that it's something

  341. that cannot be understood

  342. in human terms.

  343. Why do we need a counselor

  344. that is wonderful?

  345. We don't have the answers

  346. and for most of the time

  347. I feel like I don't even know

  348. the questions

  349. that I'm supposed to be asking.

  350. And when we go around

  351. and we gather counselors around us

  352. to help us deal with different aspects

  353. of day-to-day life,

  354. we go to a friend for advice,

  355. we read the Financial Times

  356. so we can know

  357. what's going on

  358. with the financial markets,

  359. we have our different gurus

  360. that we go to.

  361. Some of you find them

  362. in the pages of

  363. the Cosmo magazine

  364. or Elle

  365. for your fashion tips.

  366. If I have anything

  367. to do with money,

  368. I go and ask my dad

  369. and he helps me understand

  370. what this tax bill means.

  371. And if he has questions

  372. about exercise,

  373. he asks me

  374. and I still don't know

  375. why he asks me.

  376. But here in Asia,

  377. we have other things

  378. that we go to.

  379. We go and we

  380. go to gravestones

  381. and we burn justics

  382. and we worship our ancestors

  383. in hoping that they'll give us

  384. good fortune,

  385. that they'll be with us

  386. as we're working

  387. through our lives.

  388. Or we go to palm readers

  389. to read our future,

  390. then afterwards

  391. to the Feng Shui Master

  392. so he can help us

  393. adjust our future.

  394. But even when these things

  395. go against what God asks for us,

  396. even when they go against

  397. what society asks for us,

  398. we continue to seek

  399. these other counselors.

  400. You know,

  401. just earlier this year

  402. in Tianjin,

  403. there was a communist party leader

  404. who was removed

  405. from his position

  406. because they found out

  407. that against his cultural environment,

  408. against the party

  409. which says that you shouldn't

  410. be looking to those things,

  411. he still went to his Feng Shui Master

  412. to figure out how it was

  413. that he was going to get

  414. his promotions,

  415. how it was he was going

  416. to advance through the ranks

  417. in the party.

  418. And that's not the first time

  419. this has happened

  420. because God's people

  421. also turned away

  422. from what God

  423. had asked of them

  424. to find a different counselor,

  425. to find a counselor

  426. who would give them

  427. the answers they wanted

  428. when they wanted them.

  429. We go,

  430. and we turn away

  431. from the counselor

  432. that God has given

  433. because we actually,

  434. we're pretty impatient.

  435. And I think this is the effect

  436. that Google has had on us

  437. because it teaches us

  438. that we get our answers

  439. right now,

  440. that we get them

  441. when we want it.

  442. And if it's not Google,

  443. then we go on Facebook.

  444. And if not Facebook,

  445. then we look on Wikipedia

  446. to find answers

  447. to our questions.

  448. But instead of answers,

  449. we get information.

  450. And information

  451. isn't really wisdom.

  452. Google isn't really

  453. a wonderful counselor.

  454. You know,

  455. we turn to all these things

  456. because at the bottom of it,

  457. even as Christians,

  458. we don't trust

  459. an all-knowing,

  460. our all-wise,

  461. our loving Heavenly Father

  462. who sees us

  463. and wants to answer

  464. not just the question of

  465. what do I do today?

  466. What do I do with my toddler

  467. who won't eat?

  468. What do I do

  469. with this really,

  470. really infuriating boss?

  471. But he goes

  472. and he sees

  473. the bottom of it.

  474. He sees our hearts

  475. and he gives us wisdom

  476. to deal not just

  477. with the surface

  478. of things in our life,

  479. but with our hearts.

  480. Because we have

  481. deep heart questions

  482. that we need to answer.

  483. We have deep heart questions

  484. that go beyond

  485. the crises that we face

  486. day by day.

  487. questions like,

  488. how am I going to deal

  489. with this guilt?

  490. How am I going to deal

  491. with this sin

  492. that seems to have

  493. a stranglehold on me

  494. and I can't shake?

  495. God, how am I going to know

  496. what it is that you have

  497. planned for me in my life?

  498. Should I take this job?

  499. Should I quit

  500. the job that I'm in

  501. right now?

  502. How do I deal

  503. with injustice

  504. and poverty

  505. and discrimination

  506. that I see

  507. all around me?

  508. How can I have

  509. this conversation

  510. with my father

  511. who's dying

  512. and I haven't talked

  513. to in years?

  514. We have all these questions

  515. and very often

  516. the answer we get

  517. from God

  518. either isn't one

  519. that we like

  520. or it doesn't come

  521. right away

  522. and it doesn't come

  523. in our schedule

  524. and we don't trust God

  525. and we run to Google

  526. and we run to our gurus

  527. to try and find our answer.

  528. Because King Ahaz

  529. didn't trust God,

  530. because we

  531. didn't trust God,

  532. God says,

  533. you need a counselor.

  534. You need

  535. a wonderful counselor.

  536. God sent an empire

  537. to destroy Judah

  538. because Ahaz

  539. wouldn't trust him.

  540. And even as this

  541. was happening,

  542. God called out

  543. to his people in Judah

  544. and he said,

  545. don't be distracted

  546. by what's happening

  547. around you.

  548. Keep trusting me.

  549. Keep running to me.

  550. Keep fearing me.

  551. Keep holding

  552. on to my word.

  553. He says,

  554. run to me

  555. because there

  556. you'll find wisdom.

  557. There you'll find hope.

  558. There you'll find

  559. peace.

  560. In chapter 8,

  561. Isaiah says

  562. that even though

  563. God isn't happy

  564. with his children,

  565. even though God

  566. seems silent

  567. and far away,

  568. even when the enemy

  569. is knocking on the door

  570. that he's going

  571. to come through

  572. for them.

  573. He says,

  574. patiently trust the Lord.

  575. Wait for God.

  576. Has anyone ever

  577. told you that

  578. when you're

  579. struggling?

  580. When you can't figure out

  581. and make sense

  582. of your crisis?

  583. It says,

  584. patiently wait for God.

  585. That doesn't sound

  586. like the right response,

  587. but that's what God says.

  588. He says,

  589. patiently wait for me.

  590. God says that God knows

  591. that we're impatient

  592. and when those two years

  593. or three months

  594. or 30 seconds are up

  595. and we're tired

  596. of waiting for God,

  597. we'll run to something else.

  598. We'll run to our Google

  599. and to our gurus

  600. to find our answers.

  601. He says that the people

  602. around you will say,

  603. forget God.

  604. He's not going to help you.

  605. Go to the fortune tellers

  606. who make those chirping noises.

  607. They will help you out.

  608. They will give you wisdom.

  609. He says,

  610. they will say,

  611. go and ask the spirits

  612. of the dead

  613. and maybe you're looking

  614. at me right now

  615. and you're thinking,

  616. I've never done that before.

  617. I've never seen a fortune teller

  618. or ask spirits of the dead,

  619. but just because

  620. you don't do this

  621. doesn't mean that

  622. you're turning away from God.

  623. It doesn't mean that

  624. you are not running to God

  625. for your hope

  626. because we go to things

  627. that we think

  628. will give us salvation.

  629. We go to our friends

  630. who we think

  631. will give us the answers

  632. to deal with our struggle.

  633. When God doesn't seem to work,

  634. when God doesn't seem

  635. to be answering your questions,

  636. who are you going to?

  637. Who are you asking?

  638. Who are you hoping

  639. will give you wisdom?

  640. Who are you hoping

  641. will answer your questions?

  642. The Bible tells us

  643. that God will answer.

  644. The Bible also tells us

  645. that the gods

  646. that we're looking for

  647. will leave us dead.

  648. Verses 21 and 22

  649. of chapter 8 say that.

  650. They say that for these people,

  651. they are going to be

  652. greatly troubled

  653. and distressed

  654. because their counselors

  655. will give them food

  656. for a little bit

  657. but it won't reach

  658. their hunger.

  659. It will give them

  660. a little bit of light

  661. but it won't show them

  662. the way.

  663. Because Google

  664. will give us three ways

  665. to fix our life

  666. now

  667. on our schedule

  668. and not God's.

  669. The palm readers

  670. will tell us that

  671. this is your future

  672. and now you can be

  673. the driver

  674. of your destiny.

  675. Our counselors

  676. and gurus

  677. will speak to us

  678. on our terms

  679. and tell us that

  680. even as we're struggling,

  681. we can still

  682. be the rulers

  683. and the king

  684. of our little kingdoms.

  685. And that's what Ahaz did.

  686. Ahaz said,

  687. actually,

  688. I don't want to wait

  689. on God.

  690. I don't want to wait

  691. for this promised child.

  692. I'm going to go to Assyria

  693. and I'm going to ask them

  694. to help me

  695. deal with Israel

  696. and Syria

  697. who are trying

  698. to kill us.

  699. In the end,

  700. God used the same Assyria

  701. that Ahaz went to

  702. for help

  703. to conquer

  704. and to destroy

  705. the kingdom

  706. that he was trying

  707. to save.

  708. The Bible teaches us

  709. that our earthly counselors

  710. may do a good job

  711. at helping us

  712. right now

  713. but ultimately

  714. they will lead

  715. to our death.

  716. that they're like

  717. they're like

  718. a little match

  719. that we're trying

  720. to light

  721. in a huge

  722. corn maze

  723. when God

  724. instead is offering

  725. us GPS

  726. and sunlight.

  727. The problem

  728. with our counselors,

  729. the problem

  730. with the Financial Times

  731. and Google

  732. and Wikipedia

  733. and social media

  734. and our fortune tellers

  735. is that

  736. they don't get

  737. to the heart

  738. of our matter.

  739. They don't get

  740. to the bottom

  741. of our souls

  742. and our desires

  743. and the things

  744. that are taking

  745. our crises

  746. and making them

  747. seem eternal

  748. and all encompassing

  749. because

  750. your analyst

  751. will help you

  752. figure out

  753. how to make

  754. the most

  755. of the market

  756. but

  757. it may not

  758. tell you

  759. how to deal

  760. with greed.

  761. Oprah will teach

  762. you how to make

  763. friends

  764. but she won't

  765. help you deal

  766. with the loneliness

  767. in your soul.

  768. You can do

  769. all the community

  770. service

  771. that you want

  772. but it won't

  773. deal

  774. with your guilt.

  775. You can rearrange

  776. your office

  777. but it won't

  778. help you deal

  779. with the unease

  780. that you feel

  781. because you're

  782. out of control.

  783. You can go

  784. and get the best

  785. advisors

  786. who will help you

  787. get into the best

  788. companies in your field

  789. but they will

  790. let you down

  791. because you will

  792. get there

  793. and you're

  794. at the bottom

  795. and if you're

  796. a fresh guy

  797. you're going

  798. to be looking

  799. up and wondering

  800. how is it

  801. that I'm going

  802. to get to the top

  803. and you'll find

  804. mentors will help

  805. you get there

  806. but even though

  807. you get to the top

  808. it still won't

  809. deal with your

  810. longing

  811. for meaning

  812. and significance

  813. and belonging

  814. and love.

  815. Our counselors

  816. don't reach

  817. the bottom

  818. of our troubled

  819. hearts.

  820. They just deal

  821. with things

  822. on the surface

  823. they make us

  824. feel satisfied

  825. and appeased

  826. now

  827. but not

  828. in the long

  829. term.

  830. In C.S. Lewis's

  831. The Lion, Witch

  832. and the Wardrobe

  833. Edmund was

  834. tempted

  835. by the

  836. witch's

  837. Turkish delight

  838. it was tasty

  839. and delicious

  840. and made him

  841. want more

  842. but in the end

  843. he realized

  844. that the witch

  845. was just going

  846. to leave him

  847. with stale bread

  848. not more candy

  849. and that the

  850. promises

  851. that the witch

  852. gave him

  853. of being

  854. in control

  855. of his brothers

  856. and sisters

  857. actually

  858. were never

  859. going to come

  860. true.

  861. We need a

  862. wonderful counselor

  863. a counselor

  864. who's going

  865. to understand

  866. our world

  867. and our lives

  868. beyond the

  869. surface

  870. because

  871. our

  872. earthly

  873. counselors

  874. will only

  875. touch the

  876. top

  877. of our

  878. problems

  879. that they'll

  880. never give us

  881. wisdom

  882. to deal

  883. with what's

  884. going on

  885. underneath.

  886. They'll make us

  887. feel like the

  888. rulers of our

  889. lives

  890. but never

  891. really give us

  892. control

  893. like that

  894. toddler

  895. you know

  896. they're like

  897. a toddler

  898. going to another

  899. two year old

  900. to get them

  901. to explain

  902. shoelaces

  903. because we need

  904. a wonderful

  905. counselor

  906. because our

  907. earthly counselors

  908. can't explain

  909. what is going

  910. on beneath.

  911. They can't give us

  912. peace

  913. and hope

  914. to work through

  915. the trouble

  916. that we're in.

  917. They can't give us

  918. wisdom

  919. that goes

  920. beyond the

  921. surface.

  922. So where does

  923. Jesus come to

  924. this picture?

  925. How does

  926. Jesus come

  927. and how is

  928. he our

  929. wonderful

  930. counselor?

  931. How is he

  932. the answer

  933. to Ahaz's

  934. trouble?

  935. How is he

  936. our wise

  937. counselor

  938. who's going

  939. to come

  940. into our

  941. lives

  942. and give us

  943. wisdom and

  944. understanding

  945. and help us

  946. to walk

  947. through

  948. trouble?

  949. You don't

  950. have to read

  951. much of the

  952. Bible or even

  953. be really

  954. familiar with

  955. it to know

  956. that Jesus

  957. was a wise

  958. counselor.

  959. If you're

  960. non-Christian

  961. you may even

  962. think that he

  963. is a wise

  964. teacher,

  965. a moral

  966. prophet.

  967. But just

  968. another

  969. counselor,

  970. not really

  971. God.

  972. I think that

  973. for many of

  974. us we look

  975. at the things

  976. that Jesus

  977. said,

  978. we look at

  979. the things

  980. that he

  981. did and we

  982. think that

  983. they're foolish.

  984. We might say

  985. that those are

  986. very holy

  987. things.

  988. Those are

  989. very good

  990. things.

  991. But in the

  992. bottom of

  993. our heart

  994. we think

  995. that the

  996. things that

  997. Jesus said

  998. are foolish.

  999. And if you

  1000. look at

  1001. Matthew

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  1002. chapter 5

  1003. and Matthew

  1004. through Matthew

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  1005. chapter 7,

  1006. the Sermon on

  1007. the Mount,

  1008. Jesus says

  1009. all kinds

  1010. of things

  1011. which our

  1012. earthly counselors,

  1013. even our

  1014. own selves

  1015. would say are

  1016. ridiculous,

  1017. that there

  1018. are no ways

  1019. to deal.

  1020. There are not

  1021. the ways to

  1022. deal with the

  1023. world.

  1024. He says that

  1025. it's not the

  1026. proud and the

  1027. strong that will

  1028. inherit an earth,

  1029. but the weak

  1030. and the

  1031. humble.

  1032. He says that

  1033. anger isn't

  1034. just about

  1035. you being

  1036. right and

  1037. you being

  1038. justified,

  1039. but that our

  1040. anger should lead

  1041. us to

  1042. reconciliation and

  1043. humility.

  1044. Jesus said that

  1045. actually marriage is

  1046. something that he

  1047. wants us to work

  1048. through when the

  1049. going gets tough,

  1050. not to cut and

  1051. run at the

  1052. earliest opportunity.

  1053. he told his

  1054. followers that

  1055. actually they

  1056. shouldn't seek

  1057. retaliation for

  1058. those who are

  1059. hurting them and

  1060. those who are

  1061. trying to kill

  1062. them, but

  1063. instead they

  1064. should love

  1065. their enemies,

  1066. they should

  1067. serve their

  1068. enemies.

  1069. He told these

  1070. people that

  1071. they shouldn't

  1072. worry about

  1073. treasures here on

  1074. earth, but they

  1075. should store up

  1076. seemingly intangible

  1077. heavenly treasures.

  1078. Now, if you

  1079. took these things

  1080. and you wrote

  1081. them in the

  1082. Financial Times,

  1083. well, they

  1084. wouldn't get

  1085. published.

  1086. They don't make

  1087. sense.

  1088. Our earthly

  1089. counselors don't

  1090. see this as a

  1091. way to dealing

  1092. with the world, a

  1093. way for working

  1094. through our

  1095. trouble, a way

  1096. for living wisely.

  1097. But these

  1098. seemingly foolish

  1099. things, they

  1100. teach us to

  1101. trust God.

  1102. The very

  1103. problem that

  1104. Ahaz in the

  1105. beginning had

  1106. when God

  1107. said if you're

  1108. faith is not

  1109. firm, then you

  1110. won't be firm

  1111. at all.

  1112. They teach us to

  1113. trust God and

  1114. have faith and

  1115. trust that he is

  1116. going to be the

  1117. one that is going

  1118. to come through

  1119. for us.

  1120. The things that

  1121. Jesus says are

  1122. wise seem

  1123. foolish because

  1124. we aren't

  1125. thinking of a

  1126. God who is

  1127. telling us these

  1128. things, who

  1129. says I'm going

  1130. to be with you

  1131. and I'm going to

  1132. carry you

  1133. through this

  1134. seemingly foolish

  1135. and ridiculous

  1136. list of wise

  1137. sayings.

  1138. And it's not

  1139. just the things

  1140. that Jesus says

  1141. that are foolish.

  1142. The way in which

  1143. Jesus saves us

  1144. is foolish.

  1145. Couldn't he have

  1146. saved us by

  1147. raising up a

  1148. giant army or

  1149. through a

  1150. political revolution?

  1151. Could he have

  1152. saved us by any

  1153. other way rather

  1154. than being hung

  1155. up on a cross?

  1156. You know, the

  1157. Greeks and the

  1158. wise Jews of

  1159. that day said

  1160. that's ridiculous.

  1161. There's no way

  1162. that he's our

  1163. God and our

  1164. Savior because

  1165. a God shouldn't

  1166. die.

  1167. God shouldn't

  1168. let himself be

  1169. disgraced like

  1170. that.

  1171. And even the

  1172. way in which

  1173. Jesus comes

  1174. into our life,

  1175. the advent that

  1176. we're remembering

  1177. is foolish in

  1178. our eyes because

  1179. our wise

  1180. counselor,

  1181. shouldn't be

  1182. born in a

  1183. haystack.

  1184. Our wise

  1185. counselor should

  1186. be given all

  1187. the privilege,

  1188. should be the

  1189. child of nobles,

  1190. should be sent

  1191. to the Oxfords

  1192. and the Cambridges

  1193. and getting his

  1194. PhDs to

  1195. understand the

  1196. world so he

  1197. can advise the

  1198. wisest people

  1199. on how to

  1200. live their life.

  1201. Instead,

  1202. God asks

  1203. Mary and

  1204. Joseph to

  1205. trust him.

  1206. He asks the

  1207. people of

  1208. Judah to

  1209. trust him

  1210. because he's

  1211. going to send

  1212. them a wise

  1213. counselor and

  1214. he's going to

  1215. be born to a

  1216. young carpenter

  1217. and his

  1218. disgraced wife

  1219. in a barn.

  1220. And this

  1221. foolish

  1222. birth is

  1223. actually the

  1224. greatest wisdom.

  1225. wisdom.

  1226. The

  1227. apostle Paul,

  1228. a church

  1229. planter,

  1230. wrote about

  1231. 20 years

  1232. after Jesus'

  1233. death,

  1234. he says

  1235. that God

  1236. chose things

  1237. that are

  1238. foolish

  1239. to shame

  1240. the wise.

  1241. He chose

  1242. things that

  1243. are weak

  1244. to shame

  1245. the strong,

  1246. that the

  1247. foolishness

  1248. of God

  1249. is wiser

  1250. than the

  1251. wisest wisdom

  1252. of man.

  1253. Paul wrote

  1254. that God

  1255. is a

  1256. great God

  1257. who knows

  1258. and sees

  1259. and loves

  1260. and cares

  1261. and is

  1262. looking out

  1263. for your

  1264. best.

  1265. That when

  1266. he gives you

  1267. wisdom,

  1268. that tiny

  1269. little bit of

  1270. wisdom,

  1271. wisdom,

  1272. that is

  1273. greater than

  1274. anything any

  1275. of your

  1276. counselors or

  1277. fortune tellers

  1278. or Google

  1279. or Wikipedia

  1280. will ever

  1281. tell you.

  1282. He says

  1283. that Jesus,

  1284. the baby,

  1285. Jesus who

  1286. taught,

  1287. Jesus who

  1288. eventually would

  1289. die on a

  1290. cross,

  1291. became

  1292. wisdom

  1293. for us.

  1294. Now here's

  1295. the thing about

  1296. a wonderful

  1297. counselor.

  1298. Jesus reaches

  1299. the bottom

  1300. of our

  1301. hearts.

  1302. He deals

  1303. with our

  1304. sin and

  1305. our rebellion,

  1306. the things

  1307. that we

  1308. do that

  1309. go against

  1310. God.

  1311. He deals

  1312. with our

  1313. arrogance

  1314. that makes

  1315. us say,

  1316. no,

  1317. we're going

  1318. to put

  1319. on the

  1320. shoe

  1321. ourself.

  1322. He deals

  1323. with that

  1324. and he

  1325. says,

  1326. the way

  1327. that you

  1328. find wisdom

  1329. isn't by

  1330. being on

  1331. the throne

  1332. of your

  1333. life,

  1334. isn't by

  1335. being in

  1336. control,

  1337. but by

  1338. stepping off

  1339. your throne.

  1340. letting Jesus

  1341. sit in your

  1342. place and

  1343. saying that

  1344. Jesus,

  1345. you're going

  1346. to be my

  1347. king,

  1348. my savior,

  1349. my advisor,

  1350. my counselor.

  1351. You're doing this

  1352. picture of a

  1353. toddler struggling

  1354. to put a left

  1355. shoe on his

  1356. right.

  1357. We need a

  1358. loving heavenly

  1359. father who's

  1360. going to say,

  1361. no, that's not

  1362. the way you put

  1363. on your shoes.

  1364. Jesus says,

  1365. and to take

  1366. us and gently

  1367. put the shoe

  1368. on our right

  1369. foot and tie

  1370. the knot in

  1371. our laces for

  1372. us.

  1373. Jesus says

  1374. that if you

  1375. trust me,

  1376. if you have

  1377. faith in me,

  1378. I'm going to

  1379. send my Holy

  1380. Spirit to be

  1381. with you,

  1382. to be your

  1383. counselor,

  1384. to walk you

  1385. through your

  1386. life.

  1387. I think it

  1388. can be really

  1389. easy, and I

  1390. think especially

  1391. talking about

  1392. Jesus as a

  1393. wonderful counselor

  1394. to think of

  1395. Christianity as

  1396. good advice.

  1397. You know, that

  1398. if we do all

  1399. the things that

  1400. Jesus says,

  1401. if we stop

  1402. looking for

  1403. the advice,

  1404. that we'll be

  1405. happy.

  1406. That if we only

  1407. go to our

  1408. pastors to help

  1409. us deal with

  1410. our problems,

  1411. that we'll have

  1412. peace.

  1413. That if we're at

  1414. church every

  1415. Sunday, that we're

  1416. going to have

  1417. meaning.

  1418. a purpose in

  1419. our life.

  1420. That if I use

  1421. the Bible as

  1422. my manual,

  1423. then everything

  1424. will be alright.

  1425. But Christianity

  1426. isn't just an

  1427. encouragement for

  1428. nice people who

  1429. want religion.

  1430. Our wonderful

  1431. counselor isn't

  1432. there to help

  1433. you have a little

  1434. Jesus wisdom in

  1435. your life.

  1436. Because if we're

  1437. doing that, if

  1438. we're just using

  1439. Christianity as

  1440. another

  1441. head on to

  1442. the list of

  1443. counselors that

  1444. we have, then

  1445. really we're

  1446. missing a point.

  1447. We've just

  1448. Christianized our

  1449. counsel.

  1450. Because Christianity

  1451. is not good

  1452. advice.

  1453. It's good news.

  1454. It's good news

  1455. that says that

  1456. God sees us in

  1457. our struggle and

  1458. he hasn't left us

  1459. alone.

  1460. He hasn't abandoned

  1461. us.

  1462. He's not far away.

  1463. But he sent

  1464. Jesus to walk

  1465. through and

  1466. struggle with us.

  1467. To experience

  1468. the troubles that

  1469. we have.

  1470. To be rejected

  1471. by his family

  1472. and friends.

  1473. To be betrayed

  1474. by those who are

  1475. close to him.

  1476. To be persecuted

  1477. by those who

  1478. didn't like him.

  1479. So that he would

  1480. be our savior.

  1481. And when Jesus

  1482. asked to be our

  1483. counselor, he

  1484. asks for us to

  1485. trust him.

  1486. He says that

  1487. your greatest

  1488. intentions aren't

  1489. going to get you

  1490. where you need to

  1491. be.

  1492. But I can.

  1493. And I'm going to

  1494. accomplish all the

  1495. wisdom that you

  1496. cannot do.

  1497. And I'm going to

  1498. accomplish all the

  1499. counsel that you

  1500. need that you

  1501. can't do by

  1502. yourself.

  1503. That he's going

  1504. to make us right

  1505. with God.

  1506. He's going to

  1507. help us to

  1508. trust God.

  1509. He's going to

  1510. give us the

  1511. Holy Spirit.

  1512. He's going to

  1513. help us look at

  1514. the financial

  1515. times and

  1516. understand it.

  1517. Not in terms

  1518. of us getting

  1519. through our

  1520. problems.

  1521. But us following

  1522. God.

  1523. Who's going to

  1524. look at the

  1525. Google page that

  1526. we found about

  1527. how to feed our

  1528. toddler.

  1529. And help us

  1530. look at that.

  1531. And help us

  1532. understand actually

  1533. what's going on in

  1534. our own hearts and

  1535. our desire for

  1536. control.

  1537. And trust God to

  1538. be the one to

  1539. walk us through

  1540. this.

  1541. Christmas.

  1542. At Christmas we

  1543. can remember that

1544. God came to be our

  1545. wonderful counselor.

  1546. And we can choose

  1547. to say, Jesus, I'm

1548. going to step off my

  1549. throne of being in

  1550. control of seeking my

  1551. own counselors and

  1552. not you.

  1553. And I'm going to

  1554. follow you.

  1555. This morning Jesus

  1556. is calling to us

1557. and he says, I want

  1558. to be your wise

  1559. counselor.

1560. I want to be your

  1561. wonderful counselor.

  1562. Will you trust me?

  1563. will we trust God?

  1564. Let's pray.

  1565. Heavenly Father, I

  1566. need you.

  1567. I need your wise

  1568. counsel because I

  1569. don't know what I'm

  1570. doing.

  1571. I don't know how to

  1572. work out my life.

  1573. I don't even know

  1574. what to ask.

1575. But God, I thank you

  1576. that you have not

  1577. left us alone.

1578. You have given us a

  1579. savior who is wise,

  1580. who became wisdom for

  1581. us, who did foolish

  1582. things in our eyes,

1583. so that we can trust

1584. you, so we can walk

  1585. through our day-to-day

1586. life and say that you,

  1587. Jesus, are our king.

  1588. Well, this Christmas,

1589. Lord, help us to trust

  1590. you.

1591. Help us to follow you,

  1592. our wonderful counselor.

  1593. Amen.
