  1. Father, we thank you that you are a God who speaks.

  2. We confess before you that you are far more willing to speak to us than we are to listen.

  3. And we confess before you, Father, that you are far more willing to listen to us than we are to speak to you.

  4. We ask, Father, that you grant us a hearty desire to pray

  5. and that you grant us a deep desire to listen deeply to all that you have to say.

  6. Father, pour out your Holy Spirit upon us as we look at your word.

  7. And this we ask in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  8. Please be seated.

  9. About seven or eight weeks ago, I asked you to pray for me

  10. because one of the ministries that we run during the school academic year for university is Church on Wednesday,

  11. which is a time where we sing God's praises and the Bible is opened and you preach from the Bible.

  12. And then we're going through the book of Colossians.

  13. This is in a public place at the University of Ottawa.

  14. And the text talked about wives and slaves, amongst other things.

  15. And so I had the great privilege and honor to go and stand in public at the University of Ottawa

  16. and talk about this controversial topic.

  17. And I know many of you prayed for me and God was very kind.

  18. And I think it went well.

  19. Anyway, I think it went well.

  20. Today, I'm going to talk about a controversial topic.

  21. And in some ways, I'm going to be talking not about wives and slaves,

  22. but in some ways, I'm going to talk about slaves.

  23. I'm also going to be talking about women.

  24. I'm going to be talking about the role of women in ministry.

  25. In my flesh, I didn't want to do this.

  26. I still don't want to do this.

  27. I'm a Canadian, eh?

  28. And, you know, it's not a very popular topic in Canadian circles,

  29. which is why often there's a profound silence in churches.

  30. But the reason I'm doing it is the same reason.

  31. When I talked at the University of Ottawa,

  32. and I said, why on earth would we talk about something

  33. that can be a bit controversial like that?

  34. And here's the reason.

  35. Here's one of our commitments.

  36. One of the things which non-Christians say about Christians

  37. is that we pick and choose what we want to hear in the Bible.

  38. You know, there's been some best-selling books,

  39. a year of living biblically,

  40. the year of, you know, being a biblical woman,

  41. and they've been best-sellers.

  42. And it's a very, very common complaint about Christians

  43. that we say, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, we love the Bible,

  44. we trust the Bible, but yeah, we only really like this part,

  45. and we sort of ignore this part and don't do this part.

  46. It's a very standard complaint about Christians.

  47. And unfortunately, it often hits the mark, if we're honest.

  48. And so one of the things that we're very committed to in this church

  49. is that we preach through books of the Bible.

  50. And by preaching through books of the Bible

  51. in an attempt to declare the whole counsel of God,

  52. it means that the Bible is going to force us to talk about things

  53. that as Canadians we wouldn't want to normally talk about.

  54. And so on one hand, we're doing this to try to, in fact,

  55. not be pick-and-choosing Christians,

  56. but to be Bible Christians, Gospel Christians.

  57. And the other reason we're doing it

  58. is that one of the other complaints

  59. that non-Christians often have about Christians

  60. is that it's, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,

  61. God has a wonderful plan for your life,

  62. and oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, it's all great, etc., etc.

  63. And then you get in, and it's like there's fine print

  64. in the contract that you didn't realize.

  65. You know, like you get, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah,

  66. but get this cell phone contract.

  67. It's like no money.

  68. You know, it's all free, and then you get into it,

  69. and good grief, how do I get this huge bill, right?

  70. There's the fine print.

  71. And we don't want to be a church like that.

  72. We want, you know, we want to just,

  73. the Bible is a public revelation from God.

  74. That's how he wrote it.

  75. It's not a secret revelation just for the Illuminati,

  76. the anointed.

  77. It's a public declaration of the truth.

  78. And, you know, I really urge,

  79. if you have not given your life to Jesus,

  80. that before this service ends today,

  81. that you will give your life to Jesus.

  82. Because the gospel is the power of God

  83. to make you right with him.

  84. And we were created to be at one with our creator.

  85. And Jesus, in his death upon the cross,

  86. is God's provision for you,

  87. for him to make you right with himself.

  88. And as his grace is poured into your life

  89. to give you freedom and self-possession,

  90. to live a self-effacing life to the glory of God,

  91. which is what you were designed for.

  92. So I urge you to give your life to Jesus.

  93. And we're going to look at some of the fine print today.

  94. We're going to talk a little bit about women in ministry

  95. and ordination.

  96. I'm going to talk about it this week and next.

  97. And actually, I'll tell you now why I'm doing it.

  98. So I pray a lot,

  99. and I know others pray for me

  100. in terms of how we're going to go through books of the Bible

  101. and how the teaching is going to work.

  102. And so, you know, I had made the decision under God

  103. that we would go through the Book of Romans.

  104. This is our last sermon in the Book of Romans.

  105. And then I'd been praying about what we would do during the summer,

  106. what would be a good series to go through during the summer

  107. that I could share with Daniel.

  108. And I came up with it.

  109. It would be really good to go through the Book of Amos.

  110. It's good to hear an Old Testament preaching series every year.

  111. And I'm going to do 2 Corinthians in the fall.

  112. But I knew when I was looking at the weeks,

  113. I was going to have about three or four weeks,

  114. depending on whether there was a guest speaker,

  115. three weeks, as it turned out,

  116. between Romans and Amos.

  117. So I went looking for texts,

  118. like Bible books that I could do in three weeks.

  119. And Titus jumped out.

  120. I hadn't preached on it in quite a long time.

  121. I don't think I'd ever really preached on it in a church context.

  122. I've taught it in other contexts.

  123. And it's three chapters.

  124. It fits.

  125. And here's the thing.

  126. In Romans 16,

  127. you have some of the most important texts

  128. in arguing for women's full inclusion in ministry.

  129. And that's what we're going to look at today.

  130. And next Sunday, I'm going to preach on Titus 1.

  131. And Titus 1 is one of the most important texts

  132. that restricts women in ministry.

  133. And I didn't do this on purpose.

  134. I'm not smart enough or clever enough.

  135. And it only struck me on Monday as to what I'd done.

  136. And so now I've maybe made a lot of you a bit anxious,

  137. some of you a bit curious.

  138. So let's charge in and see what it is that the Bible has to say.

  139. Here's the thing we're going to say.

  140. Romans 16, verse 1.

    Romans 16:1

  141. We should never be afraid of the Bible.

  142. The Bible will confront our hearts.

  143. The Bible will confront the idols of our hearts.

  144. The Bible has different ways that it says exactly the sorts of things

  145. that Canadians long for.

  146. And the Bible has things to say that are exactly what Canadians fear.

  147. But the Bible is God's word written.

  148. It's God's word to us because he loves us.

  149. It is an outline of sanity.

  150. And I encourage you, if you get nothing else out of this sermon,

  151. if, in fact, at the end of this sermon,

  152. well, don't read the Bible just so you can prove that George is wrong.

  153. George isn't always right.

  154. I know that.

  155. I'm not the Bible.

  156. But if you get nothing else,

  157. I hope that you get a deep desire to read the Bible every day,

  158. to read it cover to cover, and to read it deeply,

  159. that the Bible might form you,

  160. and the Bible might form me,

  161. and the Bible might form that, our church.

  162. So it's a bit of a long introduction.

  163. Romans 16.

  164. I commend to you our sister Phoebe,

  165. a servant of the church at Sencray,

  166. that you may welcome her in the Lord in a way worthy of the saints

  167. and help her in whatever she may need from you,

  168. for she has been a patron of many,

  169. and myself as well.

  170. Now just sort of pause here for a second.

  171. And believe it or not,

  172. there's pages and pages and pages written around this simple word,

  173. servant, in academic commentaries.

  174. You know, I notice here it says,

  175. I commend to you our sister Phoebe,

  176. a servant of the church at Sencray.

  177. And depending on the Bible you have,

  178. you might have a little note there that says that the word servant

  179. might also be translated as deacon.

  180. And so right off the bat,

  181. you can see why,

  182. especially if you're guests here from certain churches,

  183. whether they allow women to be deacons or not,

  184. this is potentially an explosive text for a lot of churches,

  185. or an encouraging text for a lot of churches,

  186. depending on how you sort it out.

  187. Now, I want to deal with a heart issue here first.

  188. I want to deal with a heart issue here first.

  189. And this is true of every church,

  190. but it's probably even more true of Anglican and Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches.

  191. I mean, technically,

  192. I could introduce myself as the Reverend Canon George Sinclair,

  193. Rector of Church of the Messiah,

  194. blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

  195. We love titles.

  196. Human beings love titles.

  197. You know, in The Office,

  198. isn't that so funny?

  199. You watch The Office,

  200. Dwight is always wanting to be like the assistant regional district manager,

  201. and it's an ongoing joke.

  202. People love titles.

  203. One of the ways to demote somebody or get them out of trouble

  204. is you give them a grand-sounding title with no authority somewhere

  205. to get rid of him or her when they're problematic.

  206. Isn't that true?

  207. So here, if you could wrap the first point,

  208. here's the hard issue.

  209. Human beings love titles.

  210. God loves right action.

  211. So whether or not,

  212. the fact of the matter is that you can't actually solve the issue

  213. as to whether we should call Phoebe a deacon or a servant.

  214. You know the important issue?

  215. She's dead things.

  216. Like, I'll be very honest with you.

  217. I would have loved to have been elected bishop.

  218. Why would I have loved being elected bishop?

  219. Because, you know, it means I could boast that people liked me.

  220. Would I actually like to be a bishop?

  221. I would hate being a bishop.

  222. I would hate being away from my family half of the year.

  223. I would hate it.

  224. I would loathe it.

  225. But I sure would have liked the title.

  226. Wouldn't want to do it.

  227. But I'd like the title.

  228. And I don't think I'm alone.

  229. And so, you know, the bottom line is,

  230. Phoebe here is an important person.

  231. In the customs of the ancient day,

  232. Paul has just introduced the person who brought the letter of Romans to the Romans.

  233. He's saying, okay, you know the person who brought this letter?

  234. Her name is Phoebe.

  235. She's a person of substance.

  236. She's a person of gravitas.

  237. She is a person who is not just a talker.

  238. She is a person who is a patron.

  239. That means she has put her economic acumen,

  240. her economic resources,

  241. her organizational resources,

  242. her property,

  243. she has put them at the use of the church.

  244. And she has brought her resources to bear to the church

  245. for the church to flourish and accomplish what it has to accomplish.

  246. She is a trustworthy servant,

  247. a person of gravitas, importance, and authority.

  248. Help her.

  249. That's who she is.

  250. That's what he's saying.

  251. And so it's important for us just to remember here,

  252. behind all of the things,

  253. and I'm not saying that the other debates aren't important,

  254. but it's really easy for us to get caught up in,

  255. you know, intellectual arguments

  256. without realizing that partially what motivates

  257. our intellectual arguments

  258. is a heart issue of our love for titles

  259. and our lack of interest in actually doing things.

  260. Okay, maybe I'm the most sinful person here in the room,

  261. and it's only me who has this temptation,

  262. but I think it's a pretty common temptation.

  263. So that's the big heart issue.

  264. Let's continue to continue reading verses.

  265. But you notice how this has a bit of an impact for some churches,

  266. where for some churches,

  267. women can't have any type of position of authority in the church.

  268. And yet here we have Paul.

  269. And listen, money is money always.

  270. And if somebody is a main financial giver,

  271. a main giver of property,

  272. a main giver of her business,

  273. we don't know if she was a business person

  274. or a person of independent means,

  275. but she had some financial resources

  276. and she was a smart cookie,

  277. she knew how to use it,

  278. and there's no way she didn't have authority.

  279. I mean, that's just psychologically and humanly impossible.

  280. And this is like a bit of a blow to a lot of Christians.

  281. Let's continue reading.

  282. It actually gets more interesting

  283. with the very next two verses,

  284. next three verses,

  285. verses three and five.

  286. Greet Prisca and Aquila,

  287. my fellow workers in Christ Jesus,

  288. who risked their necks for my life.

  289. In other words, literally,

  290. they came to a point where they,

  291. it wasn't clear whether they would die.

  292. They intervened in a way that meant that they might die.

  293. But they did it to try to protect Paul.

  294. Who risked their necks for my life,

  295. to whom not only I give thanks,

  296. but all the churches of the pagans give thanks as well.

  297. Greet also the church in their house.

  298. And just sort of pause there.

  299. It's very significant that the woman is mentioned before the man,

  300. that the woman has a name of affection and intimacy,

  301. and Prisca and Aquila are actually quite well known

  302. in the New Testament.

  303. And one of the things which is significant about this

  304. is that one of the most important characters in the early church

  305. was a man by the name of Apollos.

  306. And he was an important teacher and evangelist in the church.

  307. And who did he learn the Christian faith from?

  308. Prisca and Aquila.

  309. So she taught him in an important way.

  310. And they are obviously leaders,

  311. and you have a woman teaching.

  312. So this is a very, very significant text.

  313. And it's a very, very significant text.

  314. Now just before I read the rest of the list,

  315. and I'm only going to actually,

  316. I'm not going to read all of the next 26 people who are,

  317. next 24 people who are mentioned.

  318. It is interesting that the first two people mentioned are women.

  319. But before I,

  320. I'm not going to read all of the rest of the thing.

  321. But what I want to tell you here,

  322. and I'm not going to go through every one,

  323. but almost a half of the rest of the list are slaves.

  324. In our day and age,

  325. if, well, we don't have slaves in Canada.

  326. Well, I mean, there's a problem with sex slaves,

  327. but as a general rule, it's illegal.

  328. But in the ancient world,

  329. there would be names that a citizen would have,

  330. and there would be names that an owner would give to a slave.

  331. So for almost half of the names in the rest of the list,

  332. we don't know now whether they had been,

  333. had been slaves and were now freed men or freed women,

  334. or whether they were still slaves,

  335. but they were slaves.

  336. And 10 of the women who are mentioned,

  337. the list of 20,

  338. 10 of the 26 people who are mentioned in the list are women.

  339. And, and then the language of the way they are talked about,

  340. these are all important leaders in the early church.

  341. And so it's very,

  342. very interesting.

  343. In the list that we're about to see,

  344. we're going to have slaves.

  345. We're going to have rich people.

  346. Phoebe is rich.

  347. Erastus, which is mentioned later on,

  348. is very wealthy.

  349. We have rich people.

  350. We have slaves.

  351. We have Jewish people.

  352. We have pagans.

  353. We have people who were Roman citizens.

  354. We have people who,

  355. there's a woman here who's from Persia,

  356. which is outside of the Roman Empire originally.

  357. She must have been captured in some way,

  358. or for whatever reason,

  359. she was captured as a slave.

  360. She's a slave woman,

  361. probably a freed slave woman.

  362. You have a very,

  363. very diverse picture.

  364. You're going to have a picture of slave churches,

  365. which are completely and utterly equal to the other churches,

  366. which would have been mixed slave and free.

  367. You know,

  368. it's very,

  369. very interesting for some people.

  370. When I said that I was going to be doing something controversial for most people,

  371. when we look at Romans 16,

  372. what's the big obstacle we have to it being in the Bible?

  373. Boring!

  374. Right?

  375. Am I the only sinful person here in the room?

  376. Your eyes glaze over these names you can't even pronounce.

  377. But if you actually dig into them,

  378. it's a fascinating glimpse of the early church.

  379. It's absolutely,

  380. and it's dynamite,

  381. as I'm going to talk about in a moment.

  382. It's a dynamite thing

  383. in terms of how it affects social movements

  384. and social structures and institutions

  385. and how we think about a whole range of roles.

  386. Like,

  387. just before we get into it,

  388. no,

  389. I'll save this point for a moment.

  390. Hopefully I'll remember it in a moment.

  391. But here,

  392. just before we go any further in the list,

  393. could you put up the second point,

  394. Rebecca?

  395. And for any of these points,

  396. if you don't have time to write,

  397. if you want to write them down,

  398. if they're helpful to you,

  399. they're all going to be on the webpage on Monday,

  400. I think it is.

  401. There is only one gospel

  402. from the one true God

  403. to every person and people group.

  404. That's one of the things

  405. that we see here from this text.

  406. It's very, very, very important

  407. for us to understand.

  408. There is only one gospel

  409. from the one true God

  410. to every person and people group.

  411. There's a really, really good book.

  412. I don't know how to pronounce his name.

  413. It's a Muslim name.

  414. A Muslim who became a Christian.

  415. I think it's pronounced Tabidi.

  416. I can't remember his last name.

  417. It's an African Muslim name.

  418. And he, in his book

  419. about the gospel for Muslims,

  420. the very, very beginning is,

  421. he said there is no special gospel

  422. for Muslims.

  423. There's only the gospel.

  424. If we want to go to China,

  425. you don't come up with a Chinese gospel.

  426. There's only the gospel.

  427. You want to go to Tunisia?

  428. There's no Tunisian gospel.

  429. There's only the gospel.

  430. You want to go to the transgendered community?

  431. There's not a transgendered gospel.

  432. There's only the gospel.

  433. And what we really need as Christians

  434. is to have a clarity about the gospel

  435. so that with a clarity about the gospel,

  436. when we're talking to somebody,

  437. we can try to figure out

  438. what images and analogies and metaphors

  439. will help them to understand the gospel.

  440. But there's not a separate transgendered

  441. or Muslim or Chinese or atheist gospel.

  442. There's only one gospel.

  443. And we see this here

  444. because who has been affected

  445. by the one gospel?

  446. Rich, poor, slaves, free,

  447. men, women, Jewish, pagan,

  448. Roman citizens, Persians,

  449. all hear from the one true and living God,

  450. the one gospel.

  451. So, it's a very, very, very important thing.

  452. Could you put up Romans 1, 16 to 17?

  453. This will be the last chance we get to read it.

  454. I'm going to have you all read it with me out loud

  455. in a second.

  456. Remember, some of you remember that I said

  457. that the way Romans is written

  458. in a very, very curious way

  459. by its literary structure,

  460. this basically summarizes the entire book.

  461. It's as if Paul wrote

  462. what we would now call an abstract

  463. at the beginning of the book

  464. that summarizes the entire message.

  465. And so, everything in the book

  466. is an unpacking of this.

  467. And if you could read it out loud with me,

  468. that would be very, very good.

  469. For I am not ashamed of the gospel,

  470. for it is the power of God

  471. for salvation to everyone who believes,

  472. to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

  473. For in the gospel,

  474. the righteousness of God

  475. is revealed from faith to faith.

  476. As it is written,

  477. the righteous shall live by faith.

  478. Two verses to memorize.

  479. And what this is saying

  480. is that God saw human need.

  481. God saw that human beings

  482. could not reconcile themselves to God

  483. and that human beings were made

  484. to be in fellowship and harmony with God.

  485. And God saw our great need.

  486. And so, He acted in a way which is right.

  487. That's what righteous means.

  488. And it also means He acted in a way

  489. which is right

  490. to make us right with Him.

  491. He did it, not us.

  492. And so, when Jesus is dying upon the cross

  493. and He descends into the dead

  494. and He rises on the third day,

  495. and as I tell you about that,

  496. I am not just telling you a story.

  497. I am not just giving you metaphors.

  498. I am not just giving you examples.

  499. These are not just mere words.

  500. When I tell you that Jesus died upon the cross,

  501. that He rose again,

  502. this message is power from God

  503. to make you right with Him.

  504. It doesn't matter if I raise my voice

  505. with Him, I'm excited,

  506. or if I speak very, very quietly,

  507. or if I'm very, very stuffed up.

  508. It has nothing to do

  509. with my charisma or lack of it,

  510. my eloquence or lack of it.

  511. This is news that comes from God.

  512. It is news that God has acted

  513. with power to make you right with Himself

  514. by what His Son did on the cross

  515. for you and me.

  516. And we receive it

  517. not by accomplishment,

  518. but by faith.

  519. In a sense,

  520. nothing in my hands I bring.

  521. Lord, have mercy upon me.

  522. It humbles the rich.

  523. It humbles the victim.

  524. It humbles those who believe

  525. they're racially superior.

  526. It humbles those who believe

  527. they're intellectually or athletically

  528. or sexually superior.

  529. It humbles all human ideologies.

  530. Because all we can say is

  531. we cannot say,

  532. I have a PhD,

  533. I am rich and I am important.

  534. All we can say is,

  535. Lord, only You

  536. can make me right with Yourself.

  537. Only You.

  538. Please receive me as Your own.

  539. And the Bible says that

  540. God turns none away.

  541. There is none too bad,

  542. none too broken,

  543. none too unspiritual,

  544. none too irreligious,

  545. none too angry at God,

  546. none too broken or a failure

  547. in the eyes of the world,

  548. none too successful,

  549. none too brilliant or good-looking

  550. or powerful,

  551. that God will turn you away

  552. when you humbly ask Him

  553. to make you right with Himself

  554. through His Son's death upon the cross.

  555. God rushes in

  556. with power to make you right.

  557. Let's get back to reading.

  558. So,

  559. could you just go back

  560. and put the second point up again?

  561. Rebecca, back,

  562. sorry, okay.

  563. That's why there is only one gospel

  564. from the one true God

  565. to every person

  566. and every people group.

  567. Let's go back to reading verse 5.

  568. Greet also to the church,

  569. also the church in their house.

  570. Greet my beloved Eponidas,

  571. who was the first convert to Christ in Asia.

  572. Greet Mary,

  573. who has worked hard for you.

  574. Greet Andronicus and Junia,

  575. my kinsmen and my fellow prisoners.

  576. They are well known to the apostles,

  577. and they were in Christ before me.

  578. And pause here for a second.

  579. And you would not believe

  580. how many pages there are

  581. in commentaries over that one verse.

  582. Is it Junia or Junius?

  583. Overwhelmingly,

  584. it's a woman,

  585. not a guy.

  586. And what does it mean

  587. about being amongst the apostles?

  588. So, this is another one

  589. of these dynamite texts

  590. here in the Bible.

  591. Here, Paul says

  592. that these two people

  593. could be brother and sister,

  594. or it's more likely to be

  595. a husband and wife.

  596. Andronicus and Junia.

  597. By kinsmen,

  598. it means they're Jewish.

  599. They were early Christians.

  600. And they're apostles.

  601. Now, in the New Testament,

  602. there's basically two ways

  603. that the word apostle is used.

  604. It's used for the twelve,

  605. and obviously,

  606. these two are not part of the twelve.

  607. But it's also used

  608. in another sense.

  609. It's used as a type

  610. of an authoritative

  611. taker

  612. and creator

  613. of new outreaches

  614. and new ministries

  615. and new missions.

  616. I gave the example

  617. at the eight o'clock service.

  618. There's a fellow

  619. who goes to the eight o'clock service.

  620. His name is Carl.

  621. He's on our council.

  622. And he was very involved

  623. in one of the many ministries

  624. of Power to Change,

  625. a ministry that works with men.

  626. And he, in a sense,

  627. was an apostle from them.

  628. He was granted an authority.

  629. They recognized a gifting in them.

  630. He was granted the authority

  631. and the commission

  632. to come to Ottawa

  633. and begin this ministry

  634. in the Ottawa region.

  635. I think there's now

  636. fifteen men's groups.

  637. It's become so successful

  638. that after he had created several,

  639. God used him to create several.

  640. He stepped back,

  641. continued to be a volunteer,

  642. and they hired a staff person.

  643. And in a sense,

  644. what he did there

  645. was an apostolic ministry.

  646. It's an authoritative commission

  647. to go and to create

  648. new Christian ministries

  649. or go into new areas

  650. that do not have

  651. Christian presences

  652. and be used by God

  653. for churches and ministries to come.

  654. And that's what apostle,

  655. that's the other meaning of apostle.

  656. And here it's saying

  657. that there's a woman

  658. who's among them.

  659. It's a very, very important text.

  660. It really is.

  661. Let's keep reading.

  662. Verse 8.

  663. Greet Ampliatus,

  664. my beloved in the Lord.

  665. Greet Urbanus,

  666. our fellow worker in Christ,

  667. and my beloved Stachis.

  668. I don't know how to pronounce that at all.

  669. Greet Apellas,

  670. who is approved in Christ.

  671. Greet those who belong

  672. to the family of Aristopolis.

  673. And I'm going to stop here

  674. with the list of names

  675. to draw something out.

  676. There's no little asterisk here

  677. beside the word family,

  678. but afterwards during coffee

  679. we can have a debate

  680. whether some of your Bibles

  681. say household,

  682. some say family.

  683. We can have a debate

  684. about which is the better term.

  685. Here's where I would say

  686. that household

  687. is the better term

  688. to translate it.

  689. In the original language,

  690. what he's noticed,

  691. he's not saying that Aristopolis,

  692. and it's going to come up

  693. a second time

  694. with a different person,

  695. they're not Christians.

  696. So what he's doing

  697. is saying,

  698. greet the slaves,

  699. the Christian slaves,

  700. who are owned by this man.

  701. And in fact,

  702. what it's saying

  703. in the original language,

  704. in the ancient world,

  705. there's only one church in Rome,

  706. only one church in Rome,

  707. but the one church in Rome

  708. is made up of a series

  709. of what we would now call

  710. small churches.

  711. And the implication is here

  712. in the next case

  713. that there's a church of slaves.

  714. But they're not second-class churches.

  715. It's not like it was

  716. in the worst parts of apartheid

  717. or the worst parts

  718. of the American South

  719. where black churches

  720. would be second-class churches,

  721. not equal with a white church.

  722. You know,

  723. there's a very important movement

  724. in the States

  725. called Black Lives Matter.

  726. And in a sense,

  727. what Paul is just saying here

  728. in huge, bold print

  729. is slaves' lives matter.

  730. Their church is just as equal

  731. as the other churches,

  732. the ones in people

  733. of means houses.

  734. Here's two big takeaways from this.

  735. If you could put up the third point,

  736. that would be great.

  737. God desires to use

  738. every person gripped by the gospel

  739. to make a powerful difference

  740. in the world for his glory.

  741. God desires to use

  742. every person gripped by the gospel

  743. to make a powerful difference

  744. in the world for his glory.

  745. I put in here desires

  746. because, of course,

  747. some of us spend days,

  748. weeks, months, years

  749. resisting God.

  750. God wants us to do something.

  751. We know God wants us

  752. to do something

  753. and we don't do it

  754. because it would make us look geeky.

  755. It would make us look foolish.

  756. It would make us look stupid.

  757. It would make us look unpopular

  758. with the hip people

  759. or the cool people

  760. or, I don't know,

  761. we just don't.

  762. Maybe I'm the only sinful person here

  763. once again,

  764. but I have a suspicion

  765. that many of us

  766. who are maybe with tears

  767. would say,

  768. yeah, that's really described

  769. a lot of things in my life.

  770. But here's the thing.

  771. This text is showing us.

  772. It's not saying,

  773. okay, well, here,

  774. it's really, really unfortunate

  775. that all you slaves

  776. became Christians

  777. because, like, you're slaves.

  778. Like, you have a pagan master.

  779. He has no interest

  780. in letting you go free.

  781. He has no interest

  782. in letting you serve

  783. this stupid supposed God

  784. who died by crucifixion

  785. showing that he's unimportant to Rome.

  786. He's not one of the powerful Roman gods.

  787. Oh, it's really,

  788. it sucks so much

  789. that you're under him.

  790. Too bad you can't do anything.

  791. No.

  792. It's not, oh, too bad you're a woman

  793. and you're powerless.

  794. Too bad you're single,

  795. a single woman or a single man.

  796. That's the spectacular thing

  797. about this list.

  798. There's Roman citizens,

  799. there's slaves,

  800. there's rich,

  801. there's poor,

  802. there's single,

  803. there's married.

  804. All being used by God.

  805. And they're all being used by God

  806. because he knows them by name.

  807. That's a really important thing for us.

  808. Like, if you give your life to Jesus,

  809. you're not saying,

  810. oh, it's not as if,

  811. okay, God is looking for

  812. a transgendered person

  813. to become a Christian.

  814. Oh, God's looking for

  815. an old white guy

  816. from Canada

  817. to become a Christian.

  818. It's not,

  819. he doesn't love classes.

  820. He loves you by name.

  821. He died for you by name.

  822. He knows you by name.

  823. And maybe you have,

  824. you feel you have nothing

  825. you can do to offer.

  826. You come to Jesus,

  827. he can use you in powerful ways.

  828. I can't tell you,

  829. he will use you in powerful ways.

  830. Sometimes when I visit people

  831. who are shut-ins,

  832. you know,

  833. I know that being a shut-in

  834. can be a really, really, really,

  835. really, really, really hard thing.

  836. But it might be that God

  837. is calling you to do

  838. an unbelievable work of prayer.

  839. Or of writing encouraging notes

  840. or whatever.

  841. And here's another thing as well.

  842. If you could put up the next point.

  843. The Bible read from the perspective

  844. of the biblical gospel

  845. is God's gift

  846. of an unendingly healthy virus

  847. for every society and people group.

  848. I don't know if virus is the right word.

  849. It's a good word

  850. because people are afraid of the Bible.

  851. But it's actually

  852. Bible read from the perspective

  853. of the biblical gospel

  854. is God's gift

  855. of an unendingly healthy virus

  856. for every society and people group.

  857. So, you know,

  858. if you think about it for a second,

  859. from a human being's love,

  860. I'm going to get in trouble.

  861. What the heck?

  862. I'm going to get in even more trouble

  863. in a couple of minutes.

  864. Here's the thing.

  865. And if you've had an abortion,

  866. I'm not picking on you.

  867. Jesus loves you.

  868. And the best thing you can do

  869. is to give your life to Jesus.

  870. And he won't turn you away

  871. for anything you've done.

  872. But when you listen

  873. to abortion activists,

  874. a lot of their language

  875. is the same way

  876. that slaveholders

  877. and proponents of slavery

  878. talk about slaves.

  879. It is a reintroduction

  880. of the rhetoric

  881. and narrative of slavery

  882. in Canada.

  883. The way they talk

  884. about a woman's relationship

  885. to the baby in her womb

  886. is the language of slavery.

  887. And the Bible here

  888. acts as a constant check

  889. to sense that there are slaves

  890. who are making

  891. a profound difference for God.

  892. To sense,

  893. and here in this text,

  894. to take this boring part

  895. of the Bible

  896. and realizing that the Bible

  897. is saying that slaves

  898. are used to the glory of God.

  899. That their church

  900. is just as equal

  901. as Prisca and Aquilus.

  902. That they're all,

  903. in fact,

  904. equally important ministers.

  905. This is powerful dynamite.

  906. And let's be honest

  907. about our society.

  908. We are not living

  909. in sexual

  910. and political nirvana.

  911. It isn't as if people

  912. could say,

  913. good grief,

  914. it can't get any better

  915. than this.

  916. We're living

  917. in a perfect society.

  918. Everybody is sexually whole.

  919. Nobody is sexually tormented.

  920. Everybody has an unbelievably

  921. wonderful relationship

  922. with money

  923. and with power

  924. and with themselves.

  925. There's no depression.

  926. There's no unhappiness.

  927. Well, that's not our society.

  928. And here's the thing.

  929. Any,

  930. I'm not picking on feminism.

  931. Any, you know,

  932. whether it's feminism,

  933. whether it's

  934. types of different nationalism,

  935. whether it's different,

  936. you know,

  937. philosophies of money

  938. like capitalism

  939. and socialism,

  940. every ism

  941. and every philosophy

  942. and every ideology

  943. protects,

  944. presents itself

  945. as the final word

  946. that will be here forever

  947. and it's all wrong.

  948. Talk to some of us

  949. old people

  950. who went to university

  951. in the 70s.

  952. And if you were

  953. a thinking Christian

  954. in the 70s,

  955. what did you feel?

  956. One of the things

  957. you had to deal with,

  958. you had to deal with

  959. behaviorism.

  960. You young people,

  961. you don't even know

  962. what that is.

  963. This was like

  964. big

  965. Marxism.

  966. Sort of,

  967. I know it's still

  968. a bit at universities

  969. in an odd form,

  970. but a whole pile of things

  971. which seemed

  972. here forever,

  973. the final word.

  974. 20, 30, 40 years later,

  975. you don't even know

  976. what it is.

  977. Like in the 50s

  978. when C.S. Lewis

  979. was writing,

  980. it would have been

  981. Freudianism.

  982. Who reads him anymore?

  983. And yet,

  984. it would be as if

  985. it was the

  986. final word.

  987. All of these

  988. ideologies,

  989. they come and they go.

  990. Some of them are helpful,

  991. they're helpful in different ways,

  992. they're unhelpful in different ways.

  993. I'm not saying

  994. you shouldn't be aware of them,

  995. but the fact of the matter

  996. is that the Bible

  997. is God's word written

  998. and presents this

  999. constant,

  1000. silent witness

1001. as an outline of sanity.

  1002. So now,

1003. some of you are wondering,

  1004. George,

1005. having said all of these things,

1006. I have to keep in mind

  1007. my time.

  1008. It sounds,

  1009. George,

  1010. as if

  1011. all those churches

  1012. that don't allow women

  1013. to be ministers

  1014. have made a terrible,

  1015. terrible,

  1016. terrible mistake.

  1017. Now,

1018. as some of you know,

1019. and I'm going to talk about this

1020. a little bit more next week,

  1021. I first came out,

  1022. don't get worried,

  1023. I first came out

  1024. in 1973

  1025. in favor of the

  1026. ordination of women

  1027. and

  1028. up until about

  1029. seven years ago

  1030. where I changed

  1031. my position on it.

  1032. And

1033. six or seven years ago.

  1034. and

  1035. you're going to see

  1036. why,

1037. not why I changed it

  1038. just specifically

  1039. in a moment,

  1040. but I became aware

  1041. of the thing

  1042. about more,

  1043. like at first

  1044. I supported it

  1045. really because

  1046. I didn't know

  1047. the Bible very well,

  1048. just to be honest.

  1049. Not that people

  1050. who support it

  1051. don't know the Bible

  1052. very well,

  1053. but I mean that,

1054. but at some point in time

1055. I started to become aware

  1056. of the fact

  1057. that there was

  1058. contradictory texts

  1059. in the New Testament.

  1060. So here's why

  1061. I'm talking about it

  1062. because this is what

1063. we're going to look at

  1064. next week

  1065. and if you turn

  1066. in your Bibles

  1067. to Titus chapter 1

    Titus 1 chapter mention

  1068. you're going to see

  1069. the problem.

  1070. So Titus chapter 1

    Titus 1 chapter mention

1071. and we're going to look

  1072. at verses 5 to 9.

  1073. Now remember

  1074. this is the same

  1075. Paul writing.

  1076. He's probably writing

  1077. about eight years later.

  1078. He knows that

  1079. Phoebe's a patron.

  1080. He knows that

  1081. she's a person

  1082. of substance.

  1083. He's best buddies

  1084. with Prisca.

1085. He knows all these things.

  1086. He's quite willing

  1087. to shock society.

  1088. To talk about slaves

  1089. and women

  1090. and men

1091. in all sorts of ways

  1092. which would have been

  1093. very, very shocking.

  1094. He follows somebody

  1095. who was crucified

  1096. which was a profound

  1097. offense

  1098. to all Roman society.

  1099. And here

  1100. he says this.

  1101. This is why

1102. I left you in Crete

  1103. so that you might

  1104. put what remained

  1105. into order

  1106. and appoint elders.

  1107. The word is

  1108. presbyter.

  1109. I'm a presbyter.

  1110. Okay?

  1111. In every town

  1112. as I directed you

1113. if anyone is above reproach

1114. the husband of one wife.

1115. The husband of one wife.

  1116. And his children

  1117. are believers

1118. not only to the charge

  1119. of debauchery

  1120. and insubordination.

  1121. And then he uses

1122. the word that we get

  1123. bishop from

  1124. overseer.

  1125. And he sort of

  1126. puts them

  1127. the two things together

  1128. episcopus

  1129. and overseer

  1130. presbyter

  1131. and an episcopus

  1132. and an elder

  1133. and a bishop.

  1134. He puts them

  1135. sort of together.

  1136. So they're also

  1137. bound by verse

  1138. five and six.

  1139. By the way

  1140. five and six

  1141. and seven

  1142. are a profound

  1143. rebuke to Roman

  1144. Catholic and Eastern

  1145. Orthodox churches.

  1146. If you hear

  1147. from those churches

  1148. I didn't mean to offend you.

  1149. I'm just making you

  1150. aware of the Bible.

  1151. An overseer

  1152. or bishop

  1153. as God's steward

  1154. must be above reproach.

1155. He must not be arrogant

  1156. quick-tempered

  1157. etc.

  1158. etc.

  1159. etc.

  1160. So here's the thing.

  1161. The Bible seems

  1162. to contradict itself.

  1163. Now next week

  1164. I'm going to talk

1165. about this a little bit more.

  1166. And so what happened

  1167. with me

  1168. is

  1169. there's a variety

  1170. of ways to deal

1171. with one or the others

  1172. of these.

  1173. From my egalitarian

  1174. perspective

  1175. that's how it's called.

  1176. But you know

  1177. so basically

1178. the part of the way

1179. that people deal with it

1180. they try to talk about

  1181. there's a trajectory

  1182. in the biblical text.

1183. They try to talk about

  1184. that's just what they

  1185. thought back then

1186. and we can dismiss it.

  1187. They have other ways

  1188. about saying

  1189. you can't possibly know

  1190. and there's a whole

  1191. pile of ways

  1192. to get around it

  1193. and I basically knew

1194. that all of those ways

  1195. to get around it

  1196. were wrong.

  1197. And I don't mean

  1198. to offend people here

  1199. who hold that

  1200. but I think

1201. they don't work at all.

  1202. I don't think

1203. they fit with the Bible.

  1204. And so I came

  1205. to the position

  1206. where I just had

  1207. to say to myself

  1208. the only two options

  1209. that I knew

  1210. was on one hand

  1211. you had churches

  1212. that basically

  1213. didn't allow women

  1214. to do anything.

  1215. On the other hand

  1216. this other position

  1217. of women

  1218. could be bishops

  1219. and priests.

  1220. And I was uncomfortable.

  1221. I didn't know how to

  1222. put the Bible together.

  1223. And so I came

  1224. to the conclusion

1225. which is one of the reasons

  1226. I haven't taught

1227. on Titus in the church

  1228. for about a decade

  1229. or more

  1230. is that I don't ever

  1231. believe that the Bible

  1232. is filled with any

  1233. contradictions.

  1234. I don't think

  1235. there's any incoherence

  1236. in the Bible.

1237. But I know that my mind

  1238. doesn't always see

  1239. the clarity

  1240. of the Bible.

  1241. The problem is

  1242. in my mind

  1243. not this.

  1244. That was my view.

  1245. And I did something

  1246. which is actually

  1247. very Anglican

1248. in an old fashioned way

  1249. and not very modern

  1250. or post-modern.

  1251. I was just prepared

  1252. to live without knowing

  1253. because I didn't know

  1254. the solution.

1255. And I'll talk about this

1256. more a bit next week

  1257. but I actually believe

  1258. that if you look

1259. at all of the texts

  1260. in the New Testament

  1261. and if you say

  1262. that God calls

  1263. some men

  1264. and only a small

  1265. number of men

  1266. to the position

  1267. of a presbyter

  1268. or an episcopist

  1269. who have an authoritative

  1270. teaching role

  1271. in the church

  1272. and no women

  1273. then all of the

  1274. different contradictions

  1275. in the Bible

  1276. go away.

  1277. And our goal

  1278. has to be

  1279. to try to find

  1280. a consistent

  1281. coherent way

  1282. to read the Bible.

  1283. In other words

  1284. what it's saying here

  1285. is that both men

  1286. and women

  1287. they can be presidents.

  1288. Men and women

  1289. they can be generals.

  1290. Men and women

1291. they can be race car drivers.

  1292. Men and women

  1293. they can own businesses.

  1294. Men and women

1295. they can care for children.

  1296. Men and women

  1297. they can become athletes.

  1298. Men and women

  1299. they can write books.

  1300. Men and women

  1301. they can teach.

  1302. Men and women

  1303. they can perform miracles.

  1304. Men and women

1305. they can live lives of prayer.

  1306. Men and women

1307. they can be used by God

  1308. to perform healings.

  1309. Men and women

1310. you can go on and on

  1311. and on

  1312. and on and on

  1313. but the office

  1314. of elder

  1315. and overseer

  1316. are limited

1317. only to men, but not all men.

  1318. This isn't patriarchy we're talking about.

1319. It isn't that a woman in the church

1320. has to listen to a man because he's a man,

1321. but that God calls only some men

1322. out of the majority of men

1323. to be a presbyter or a bishop.

1324. And I think that if you have that insight,

1325. almost all of the apparent contradictions

  1326. in the Bible vanish.

1327. So I've offended some of you, maybe,

1328. but the key to this is to read the Bible

  1329. and search the scriptures.

1330. I just want to know what the Bible teaches.

  1331. That's all I want to know.

1332. I just want to do what the Bible teaches.

1333. And some of you might understand,

1334. I'm going to take a moment here,

1335. I'm running out of time to share my heart.

  1336. That's why I believe, I've been praying for quite a while

1337. that God would use our church to plant churches

1338. not only in the eastern Ontario,

  1339. but across the country.

1340. And we don't have the resources, it's impossible,

1341. but I believe that we can pray that God would raise up

1342. eight young men who would be married,

1343. who could come to our church,

1344. who could be equipped and loved and prayed over,

1345. and that they could build a team of men and women,

1346. no slaves or anything in our society,

1347. but men and women from all classes,

1348. and they can go and they can plant churches.

1349. And I think it would be really wonderful

1350. if that was the thing that we as a church would pray for.

1351. And that we would also pray for a mighty move

1352. of church planning in all the urban centers of this country,

1353. and that God would use us in some small way

1354. to raise up 100 young men

1355. who are capable of being ordained,

  1356. married, building a multi-generational,

1357. multi-gender team to reach the cities.

1358. And I look forward to the day

1359. that we can wholeheartedly embrace this as a church

1360. and make it a matter of prayer

1361. and a commitment of resources.

1362. I just want to finish this text.

  1363. I've noticed my time.

1364. Here's one of the things about this, by the way.

1365. Actually, let's go back to Romans.

1366. I want to go back to Romans.

1367. I want to just share something.

1368. If one of the real takeaways about this

1369. is to search the scriptures,

1370. search all of the scriptures,

1371. read them widely, read them deeply,

1372. seek to try to put them together

1373. to get the mind of Christ,

1374. just jump down to verse 17.

1375. I appeal to you, brothers and sisters,

1376. to watch out for those who cause divisions

1377. and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine

1378. that you have been taught.

  1379. Avoid them.

1380. For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ,

  1381. but their own appetites,

1382. and by smooth talk and flattery,

1383. they deceive the hearts of the naive.

1384. And some of you might think

1385. that that's just what I've just done.

1386. I actually struggled with this text all week.

1387. But you'll notice it's not that there's not division,

1388. but that it's by the very nature of false teaching

1389. to create obstacles and division.

1390. And it's a call for us to have our minds formed

1391. by the pattern of biblical teaching,

1392. the whole Bible in its depths.

1393. And that will always cause problems

1394. with every society that we're in.

  1395. It'll be a different problem

1396. to different societies at different times.

1397. In a highly capitalistic society,

1398. the Christian teaching on the poor

1399. will be highly, highly offensive.

1400. In a culture like ours

1401. that wants to promote abortion on demand,

1402. thou shalt not take innocent human life

  1403. is profoundly divisive.

1404. But we have to be willing

1405. to have our minds formed by the mind of Christ.

1406. And I realize as well

1407. that it's very, very possible

1408. to be completely and utterly orthodox

1409. and serve your own appetites.

1410. The Bible here is calling us

  1411. to search our motivation

1412. and to search the scriptures

  1413. so that our motivation

1414. will be to bring glory to God

1415. for the good of the world

1416. and that we'd be willing

  1417. to submit our minds

1418. to the mind of Christ.

  1419. In fact, you know,

1420. one of the interesting takeaways

  1421. because I always pray,

1422. Lord, what is the word

1423. in this scripture text to me?

1424. You know the surprising thing?

  1425. All week I've struggled

  1426. to talk about this

1427. because I want to be a people pleaser.

1428. And I know that in post-modern Canada

  1429. of 2016,

1430. to say that there's anything

  1431. that limits somebody

1432. is to be profoundly un-Canadian.

1433. And I didn't want to talk about it

1434. because I wanted people to like me.

  1435. In other words,

  1436. it wasn't that I was avoiding

1437. the pattern of sound teaching,

  1438. but you know what?

1439. I wanted to serve my appetite

1440. of being a people pleaser.

1441. This was God's word to me.

1442. And I know that many of you

  1443. as well struggle

  1444. with that desire

  1445. to people please

1446. or other types of appetite.

  1447. So the text is

1448. that we'd be so gripped

  1449. by the gospel

1450. that we know the truth

  1451. and that we come

1452. to that point of humility

  1453. where our desire is

  1454. to bring God glory,

  1455. to serve him.

1456. If you could put up

  1457. the next point,

1458. God's grace grows in me,

  1459. the self-possession

  1460. to be self-effacing

  1461. in serving

1462. to the glory of God.

  1463. That's the big takeaway

  1464. of this text.

1465. God's grace grows in me,

  1466. the self-possession

  1467. to be self-effacing

  1468. in serving

1469. to the glory of God.

  1470. What does self-effacing mean?

  1471. Self-effacing is

  1472. normal,

1473. a lot of Christian services.

  1474. This is our temptation.

  1475. Applause,

  1476. applause.

  1477. No, no, no, no.

1478. This is what the gospel

  1479. wants us to do.

  1480. Look at verses 25

  1481. and following.

  1482. Now to him

  1483. who is able

  1484. to strengthen you

  1485. and is able

  1486. meaning that the word

  1487. underneath that

  1488. is dynamite.

  1489. It's power.

  1490. Okay?

  1491. Now to him

  1492. who is powerful

  1493. to strengthen you

  1494. according to my gospel

  1495. and the preaching

  1496. of Jesus Christ

  1497. according to the revelation

  1498. of the mystery

  1499. that was kept secret

  1500. for long ages

1501. but has now been disclosed

1502. and through the prophetic writings

  1503. has been made known

  1504. to all nations,

  1505. all people groups

  1506. according to the command

  1507. of the eternal God

  1508. to bring about

  1509. the obedience of faith

1510. to the only wise God

  1511. be glory forevermore

  1512. through Jesus Christ.

  1513. Amen.

1514. To the only wise God

  1515. be glory forevermore

  1516. through Jesus Christ.

  1517. Amen.

1518. To the only wise God

  1519. be glory forevermore

  1520. through Jesus Christ.

  1521. Amen.

  1522. That's what the gospel

  1523. as it grips us.

  1524. God's grace

  1525. comes in

  1526. to give us

  1527. such freedom

  1528. and self-possession

  1529. that our profound addiction

  1530. to want this

  1531. and you wish

1532. you had two other arms

1533. because while you're doing this

  1534. the other two arms

1535. could be asking for applause.

  1536. That we could come

  1537. to the point

  1538. where our goal

  1539. is that we all

  1540. with unveiled faces

  1541. beholding the glory

  1542. of the Lord.

1543. We're going to talk about that

  1544. in 2 Corinthians.

  1545. Could you put up

  1546. the final prayer?

  1547. You know,

1548. my goal for all of these things

1549. is that we would pray

  1550. the scriptures

1551. and this is in a sense

1552. a way to bring the book

  1553. of Romans to it.

1554. And I'm going to ask you

  1555. to stand.

1556. I'm going to ask you

  1557. if you would pray

  1558. this prayer with me.

  1559. If this prayer

1560. is at all meaningful to you

1561. it will be on the webpage.

1562. You can copy it down

  1563. later if you want.

1564. You can sort of look at it

  1565. as I talk

  1566. but you know

  1567. as we're gripped

  1568. by the gospel

  1569. he wants us

  1570. to read his word

  1571. from the perspective

  1572. of being gripped

  1573. by the gospel.

  1574. He wants our minds

  1575. to conform

  1576. to the pattern

  1577. of sound teaching

  1578. but it's not just

  1579. so we can be

  1580. have some unbelievably

  1581. elaborate false system

  1582. we can go around

  1583. saying aha

  1584. you're wrong

  1585. aha

  1586. you're wrong

  1587. aha

  1588. you're wrong.

  1589. That's not why

  1590. he wants us

  1591. to read the Bible.

  1592. He wants us

  1593. to read the Bible

  1594. and be gripped

  1595. by the gospel

  1596. so we're willing

  1597. to do this

  1598. for his glory.

  1599. and not like

1600. they do in a lot

  1601. of churches

  1602. you know

  1603. where the praise band

  1604. says let's all

1605. give a hand to God

  1606. but it's really

  1607. to the praise band

  1608. we all know that

  1609. right?

  1610. It's really to God

  1611. so if God

  1612. has touched your heart

  1613. in two ways

  1614. first of all

  1615. if you have not

  1616. given your life

  1617. to Jesus

  1618. there is no better

  1619. time than to say

  1620. God as I pray

  1621. this prayer

  1622. may this be

  1623. my conversion prayer

  1624. I want to be

  1625. your child

  1626. make me your own

  1627. forever

1628. and for all of us

  1629. who need it

1630. if you would join me

  1631. in praying this prayer

  1632. Heavenly Father

  1633. please make me

  1634. a disciple of Jesus

  1635. gripped by the gospel

  1636. who so reads

  1637. your word written

  1638. that my mind

  1639. conforms to your

  1640. pattern of sound

  1641. teaching

  1642. and serve you

  1643. self-facing joy

  1644. in the power

  1645. of the Holy Spirit

  1646. to make a difference

  1647. in the world

  1648. for your glory

  1649. in Jesus' name

  1650. Amen

  1651. Father pour out

  1652. your Holy Spirit

  1653. upon us

  1654. that we might be

  1655. disciples of Jesus

  1656. gripped by the gospel

  1657. living for your glory

  1658. and we ask this

1659. in the name of Jesus

  1660. Amen
