  1. Father, sometimes we think that we're very good and you do bad things.

  2. Sometimes we worry and act as if you are very distant and powerless.

  3. And we have all the power.

  4. And Father, sometimes we get in trouble and we want you to act with great power

  5. and just completely and utterly rescue us.

  6. And we confess before you, Father, that we are often unbalanced and confused.

  7. We ask, Father, that your Holy Spirit would gently but deeply be poured out upon us

  8. as we open your word, that your word would come into our lives,

  9. that your word would touch our hearts,

  10. and that we would bear much fruit in our daily life for your glory.

  11. Father, do this powerful thing in our midst and in our lives at this time.

  12. And we ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  13. Amen. Please be seated.

  14. So, one of the things that we occasionally wonder about

  15. when we rent the Ottawa Little Theatre for our Sunday morning services,

  16. and occasionally we wonder whether we should take like a 10-year lease of this space.

  17. We only go year to year.

  18. And maybe one of the things that we would like to do is be able to have a sign on the outside.

  19. You know, maybe something like Church of the Messiah come worship with us or something like that.

  20. Worship the Lord with us.

  21. It would have been very funny if this past month we'd had a sign like that out in the front

  22. because if it had something like Church of the Messiah come worship with us,

  23. right beside it would have been the play that the Ottawa Little Theatre,

  24. which is putting on, which is called The God of Carnage.

  25. So, come worship the God of Carnage with us.

  26. That actually is sort of very resonant to a lot of our culture.

  27. If you notice in lots of movies lately,

  28. if they want to say that they're going to do something that's going to bring about a lot of destruction,

  29. what do they say?

  30. They say it's going to be biblical.

  31. Maybe you don't watch action movies, but often in action or spy movies,

  32. they're going to have lots of explosions, lots of death, lots of carnage.

  33. They say it's going to be biblical.

  34. We, in fact, as a people, a lot of us do in fact worry that God is,

  35. if he does exist, if he's able to do anything at all,

  36. that if he does things, it's going to be violent.

  37. It's a very, very common cultural belief.

  38. Most of us just, you know, live our lives not even thinking about God whatsoever.

  39. We can go day by day, week by week.

  40. Maybe we fire off an odd prayer.

  41. Some of us are maybe very puzzled about the way the world is going.

  42. What does it mean that in the U.S. election,

  43. people have to choose between Trump and Clinton?

  44. What does it mean to the world that the U.K. has voted to leave the European Union?

  45. For a lot of people, they find it very, very unsettling.

  46. A lot of people, not only do they tie the belief that things are maybe getting better or better

  47. or worse and worse with what human beings are like.

  48. Many of us sort of struggle with the idea of the God of Carnage.

  49. The whole play is, in fact, about an idea that if you strip away the civilized veneer of people,

  50. that underneath we love carnage and we love violence and that the tether of civilization is very, very, very weak

  51. and easily broken and our nature of carnage comes out.

  52. So where does the Bible fall on all of this?

  53. Like, what does it have to say about what God is like?

  54. And maybe just as important for many of us, although actually the first question is the more important one,

  55. but for many of us, are human beings good?

  56. Are we bad?

  57. Are we prone to doing lots of violent stuff?

  58. Are we prone to doing more and more good things?

  59. Like, what are human beings like?

  60. Well, the book of Titus talks about this in a very, very powerful way,

  61. in a way which is, I think, very unique amongst the spiritualities and the religions of the world,

  62. and that if we look at it and take the time to look at it, I think we'll see that it's very wise

  63. and speaks into our life in a powerful way.

  64. So it would be a great help to me if you would take your Bibles and open up to Titus,

  65. and let's just look at how the Bible speaks about God and about our human situation

  66. and whether we're sort of good or bad or a bit of good and bad

  67. or just what goes on with human beings and makes human beings the way they are.

  68. Titus 3.

  69. It's sort of close to the end of your Bibles if you're using paper versions,

  70. which I still recommend at least at times to use paper versions.

  71. It helps to remind us that there's a book and that there's context,

  72. a literary and grammatical context.

  73. And here's how it begins.

  74. So the last two weeks we've looked at Titus 1 and 2.

  75. We preached the books of the Bible.

  76. Now we're looking at Titus 3, bringing the book of Titus to an end,

  77. and here's how it begins.

  78. And it actually begins in a very, very curious way about talking about civic virtues.

  79. How you actually are to try to live your life in a pagan society.

  80. In fact, it's very, very interesting.

  81. As I read these next few verses, you have to remember that if Paul was alive today

  82. and dying today, we probably wouldn't like him.

  83. Paul was short, probably within a year or so of the writing of this letter,

  84. Paul was arrested by the Roman authorities.

  85. And he did very brief but very hard time in a dungeon in Rome.

  86. And then he was executed by beheading just outside the city gates.

  87. And if the papers of the time were reporting Paul's execution,

  88. they would have said two things about Paul.

  89. They would have said that he was well known to the authorities

  90. because he'd spent much of his life, he'd spent many years in jail.

  91. And the second thing is he would have said that he was a person of no fixed address.

  92. And if we're honest ourselves, when we read about somebody doing something bad in the paper

  93. or being sentenced and we read that they have a long history of spending time in jail

  94. and they have no fixed address, we don't think very highly of the person.

  95. That's the person who's writing that which we now call Titus 3.

  96. And it's very interesting to hear how he begins by talking about civic virtues.

  97. If you just understand this historical context, he begins by saying this.

  98. I guess it's not really begin since it's chapter 3, but this part begins.

  99. Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities,

  100. to be obedient, to be ready for every good work,

  101. to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling,

  102. to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people.

  103. Now that's a very, very interesting thing for somebody to say.

  104. He's writing this letter in between having been in jail in Rome

  105. and history reveals that Paul, it's recorded in the book of Acts

  106. and after Acts, the last chapter of Acts is written,

  107. and Paul probably had two or three years where he was free.

  108. It is during that time period that he goes to Crete,

  109. which is where Titus is, and he evangelizes the island.

  110. And then sometime after this, he's captured by the authorities,

  111. does a short period of hard time,

  112. and then he's executed by beheading.

  113. But he talks about Christians being submissive to rulers and authorities,

  114. to be obedient, to be ready for every good work,

  115. to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling,

  116. to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people.

  117. Now, how does he ground this, so to speak?

  118. Like, why does he tell you to do it?

  119. There's lots of people who will give you similar advice,

  120. but the reason that they give you the advice can matter a great deal.

  121. So it might be that in a shame and honor culture,

  122. they'll talk to you about how you should maybe show courtesy to each other

  123. because it's the honorable thing to do.

  124. It would bring shame upon you to not show courtesy.

  125. Maybe in another culture or in another context,

  126. they would tell you that you should show courtesy to people because of karma.

  127. If you show courtesy to them, then they're going to maybe show courtesy to you.

  128. Maybe another reason why you might be told to show courtesy to somebody

  129. is that it's just practical.

  130. It helps things to go smoother.

  131. Others will actually maybe give you a utilitarian reason,

  132. actually a selfish reason.

  133. It's a way to manipulate people,

  134. that if you show courtesy to them,

  135. they're much more likely to do what you want.

  136. And therefore, you're going to get what you want.

  137. And if you want to get what you want,

  138. then if you show courtesy, you're more likely to get what you want.

  139. So show courtesy.

  140. In other words, the suggestion or the advice to do courtesy

  141. is ultimately based on enlightened, skillful selfishness.

  142. And I've just basically summarized virtually every leadership book in chapters.

  143. It's often built on enlightened, skillful selfishness to get what you want.

  144. Or is it just maybe tradition?

  145. There's a tradition of showing courtesy.

  146. So how is it now that Paul, who said these quite surprising things,

  147. given that he spent much time in jail,

  148. and given he doesn't know, obviously, when he's writing,

  149. in 2 Timothy, which is written after this,

  150. he knows that he's about to die.

  151. But when he writes Titus,

  152. he doesn't know that he's going to be executed by Nero.

  153. So how does Paul explain it?

  154. Like, why does he say that you should do it?

  155. Well, it's in verse 3 and following,

  156. and he actually begins with a really, really, really surprising,

  157. in a very, very surprising way.

  158. Look what he says in verse 3.

  159. For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray,

  160. slaves to various passions and pleasures,

  161. passing our days in malice and envy,

  162. hated by others and hating one another.

  163. Now there's an uplifting view of human nature,

  164. if you've ever seen one, isn't it?

  165. It's actually quite surprising that he roots the basis,

  166. because look, it begins with for.

  167. Look, for or because.

  168. It could have also been translated as because.

  169. Because.

  170. You know, why should you show courtesy toward all people

  171. and speak evil of no one and avoid quarreling?

  172. Because we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray,

  173. slaves to various passions and pleasures,

  174. passing our days in malice and envy,

  175. hated by others and hating one another.

  176. Now, many people would say,

  177. George, that's extremely,

  178. that's an extreme understanding of human beings.

  179. And obviously, George, you don't think that's true.

  180. Like, nobody thinks that's true.

  181. It's very extreme.

  182. Sort of a very bleak way of understanding human beings.

  183. Well, here's the part that's often missing

  184. when we think, when we read a Bible text like this,

  185. there's something we miss in there.

  186. You know, if Nietzsche says similar types of things

  187. about human beings,

  188. or if Ayn Rand says something similar about human beings,

  189. if Hegel says as part of a development of human beings

  190. that this is what they're like,

  191. if Freud says something similar as part of human beings,

  192. they all have a very, you know,

  193. the Bible isn't saying anything at all like what,

  194. I mean, it might sound a bit,

  195. but it's very different.

  196. It has a very, very different context.

  197. I'll try to give you a bit of an example.

  198. Imagine for a moment that it turns out you had a long-lost aunt

  199. who lived in Australia,

  200. and she'd found you in Facebook

  201. and liked what she saw in Facebook,

  202. and she dies, and she leaves you $100 million.

  203. That's real money.

  204. $100 million.

  205. And so you have $100 million tax-free,

  206. and you end up after a couple of months

  207. thinking that you should give back in some way.

  208. And so maybe through the church or some other place,

  209. you come across a person, 16 years old,

  210. really, really rough life.

  211. They've been living on the streets,

  212. and you decide to take them in,

  213. and you're going to make a difference in their life.

  214. And so you have this 16-year-old,

  215. and you pay for them to be detoxed

  216. and get out of their addictions,

  217. and you have them live with you,

  218. and you make sure that they have clothes,

  219. they have money.

  220. You pay for driving lessons for them eventually.

  221. You give them a car.

  222. Different times, you come and you pick them up,

  223. and you drive them home.

  224. You pay for them to have French lessons

  225. and dance lessons and computer lessons

  226. and just about any lesson that they want.

  227. And they go to university.

  228. A very elite university.

  229. You pay for tutors.

  230. You do all of this.

  231. And you do all of this just because you want to give back,

  232. and it's hardly anything out of $100 million.

  233. But let's say that, you know,

  234. some night their car's broken down,

  235. and they text you to come and pick them up,

  236. and you go and you pick them up,

  237. and you pick up their friends,

  238. and as you're driving them home,

  239. this person that you've helped,

  240. they, first of all,

  241. never even say hi to you when you pick them up.

  242. They don't thank you.

  243. They don't say hi to you.

  244. The entire drive while you drive them home,

  245. back to your home,

  246. and drive that person's friends all the way home different places,

  247. they never talk to you even once.

  248. They pretend as if you're not even there.

  249. And, in fact, as they're driving home,

  250. the person that you've helped regales people

  251. about how great they are at French,

  252. how great they are at dancing,

  253. how great they are at computers.

  254. They regale you about the stupid little notes

  255. that somehow show up at your house occasionally,

  256. like after you've had breakfast,

  257. put your plates back in the sink

  258. that helped me as I wash them for you.

  259. And you regale friends with how ridiculous

  260. and stupid and foolish this is.

  261. And you talk all about your accomplishments,

  262. all the while completely and utterly ignoring

  263. the person who's driving the car,

  264. which is you.

  265. And you gave them the house.

  266. You gave them the lessons.

  267. You got them detoxed.

  268. You pay all of the bills.

  269. You're picking them up at 3 o'clock in the morning

  270. when their car broke down.

  271. That's how it is with every human being with God.

  272. Every single person here with God.

  273. He gave you life.

  274. He gives you your every breath.

  275. He weaves whatever talents and gifts you have

  276. into your being.

  277. He has the sun to rise every day.

  278. Every single thing you have was given to you.

  279. Nothing is your own.

  280. Wouldn't you have described the person

  281. in the first case as being foolish and disobedient,

  282. living his life in malice and envy?

  283. I've just described myself.

  284. You see, that's what makes,

  285. when the Bible is saying these particular things

  286. about human beings,

  287. it's what makes it different

  288. than what Ayn Rand says or Nietzsche or Freud

  289. or other philosophers or social theorists,

  290. is if there is in fact a God who does exist,

  291. who is the creator and sustainer of all things,

  292. and we live our lives in such a way

  293. that we basically never talk to God,

  294. never thank him,

  295. and just basically ignore him.

  296. That's why the Bible says that we're foolish.

  297. And even this very, very hard thing

  298. about hated and hating,

  299. and it might very well be

  300. that if we really pressed into your life

  301. that there isn't a single person you hate,

  302. that might very well be the case.

  303. Often what happens is

  304. we just don't remember the people that we hate.

  305. But all that would have to happen

  306. is that as you walk out of here,

  307. you bump into a person,

  308. and maybe you're with your friends

  309. and they just see a person,

  310. I don't know,

  311. a woman with brown hair

  312. wearing shorts and a,

  313. you know, a shirt.

  314. But you stiffen

  315. because this person stopped you

  316. from getting that promotion.

  317. This person claimed that what you did,

  318. they did,

  319. and they got the praise for it.

  320. Or they did something wrong

  321. and they made it

  322. so that people thought

  323. it was you who did wrong

  324. and you got the punishment.

  325. Or maybe you think

  326. you don't hate people

  327. or don't have anything to forgive

  328. or anything like that,

  329. but you walk out that same situation

  330. and what happens is

  331. it's not the particular person,

  332. but you smell a smell,

  333. a perfume,

  334. and it brings you back

  335. to your mother or your father

  336. or a former boss or a teacher

  337. and all of a sudden you realize

  338. how much you still,

  339. actually if you were honest with yourself,

  340. hate that person.

  341. And the fact of the matter is

  342. is that for many of us,

  343. even if we think that there's not,

  344. maybe we are a blessed person

  345. who doesn't have anybody

  346. that we hate

  347. or who hates us.

  348. Because it might very well be

  349. that we walk out

  350. and that person walks away

  351. because we're the ones

  352. who've done all those things to her.

  353. In fact, isn't it so much easier

  354. for us to think in that analogy

  355. of us going out to meet somebody

  356. who's done all those wrong things to us

  357. and we feel hurt

  358. than it is for us to imagine

  359. that we walk out the door

  360. and she sees us

  361. and we're the ones

  362. who've caused the damage to her?

  363. Why is it that we find it easier

  364. to identify with the first case

  365. and not the second?

  366. Why is it that probably 99% of people

  367. find it easier to identify

  368. with the first case

  369. of the person having wronged us

  370. than it is for us to think

  371. that we might walk out the door

  372. and another person,

  373. their whole day is ruined

  374. because they've seen us

  375. and are reminded

  376. of what we've done to them.

  377. The Bible has a very, very frank discussion

  378. of what it means to be human

  379. in the context of the living God.

  380. Andrew, if you could,

  381. or Rebecca,

  382. if you could put the first point up.

  383. Here's the point of God,

  384. of the Bible,

  385. saying this particular thing

  386. here in verse 3.

  387. And it seems like a very, very odd way

  388. to begin to discuss civic virtues.

  389. But it's put there

  390. for me to understand,

  391. for you to understand

  392. that I cannot make myself right

  393. with the living God.

  394. I cannot save myself.

  395. I cannot make myself right

  396. with the living God.

  397. I cannot save myself.

  398. Even at my best moments,

  399. I can't.

  400. And that's what the Bible here

  401. is trying to communicate to us.

  402. But then some of you

  403. might say,

  404. okay, well, George,

  405. now that you've painted

  406. a complete and utter bleak picture

  407. of human beings,

  408. although I have to say

  409. that you caught me by surprise

  410. with some of your analogies.

  411. But George,

  412. like, what are you saying?

  413. Does that mean that human beings

  414. have no hope?

  415. That God just reveals our hearts

  416. and what really goes on

  417. in our hearts,

  418. but there is no hope?

  419. Like, George,

  420. even if there is a God,

  421. like, it doesn't look

  422. as if God does anything

  423. that's very helpful to me.

  424. Yeah, sure,

  425. there's been the odd time

  426. I've said a prayer

  427. and something's happened.

  428. And sure,

  429. you know,

  430. I've had some promotions

  431. and I've had some success

  432. in life and all that type of stuff.

  433. But George,

  434. look at what's going on

  435. in the States

  436. and look at what's going on

  437. in Europe

  438. and look at what's going on

  439. in Ottawa.

  440. How on earth can you believe

  441. that God cares

  442. or that he's good

  443. or kind or loving

  444. or that he'd actually

  445. do something for me,

  446. that he knows me?

  447. Look at the stars, George.

  448. Don't you sometimes

  449. stand outside

  450. and if it's a cloudless night

  451. and it's dark

  452. and you can look

  453. and you can see,

  454. you know,

  455. in Ottawa,

  456. you can only see a few stars.

  457. Maybe you've been

  458. in Algonquin Park

  459. or somewhere far more

  460. remote than that

  461. and you look up

  462. and you look at all the stars

  463. and the galaxies.

  464. George,

  465. how on earth

  466. could you possibly believe

  467. that God cares

  468. about you

  469. or me?

  470. Like,

  471. George,

  472. isn't that more reasonable?

  473. Doesn't that fit

  474. with experience?

  475. Well,

  476. the Bible's not finished.

  477. So,

  478. look at verse 4.

  479. So,

  480. verse 3 is,

  481. you know,

  482. for we ourselves

  483. were once foolish,

  484. disobedient,

  485. led astray,

  486. slaves to various passions

  487. and pleasures,

  488. passing our days

  489. in malice and envy,

  490. hated by others

  491. and hating one another.

  492. But,

  493. but,

  494. that's not the end

  495. of the story.

  496. There's a contrast.

  497. That's what the but

  498. is there for.

  499. It's a big but.

  500. Praise God

  501. for big buts.

  502. You can keep that in that

  503. and have it recorded,

  504. Andrew.

  505. Praise God

  506. for big buts.

  507. There's a big but.

  508. But when the goodness

  509. and loving kindness

  510. of God our Savior

  511. appeared,

  512. he saved us

  513. not because of works

  514. done by us

  515. in righteousness,

  516. but according

  517. to his own mercy

  518. by the washing

  519. of regeneration

  520. and renewal

  521. of the Holy Spirit

  522. whom God

  523. poured out

  524. on us richly

  525. through Jesus Christ

  526. our Savior

  527. so that being justified

  528. by his grace,

  529. we might become

  530. heirs

  531. according to the hope

  532. of eternal life.

  533. A very, very, very

  534. glorious text.

  535. Could you just put up

  536. the third point

  537. please right now?

  538. Or did I just say

  539. the second point,

  540. I guess.

  541. Am I out of order?

  542. Some I've miscounted.

  543. Oh yes,

  544. I missed that

  545. second point, yes.

  546. If God has to do

  547. something to save us,

  548. that was the second point.

  549. Put up the third point.

  550. Sometimes, you know,

  551. I don't do things perfect.

  552. Keep praying for me.

  553. The gospel is the good news

  554. of what God really,

  555. truly did

  556. in space and time

  557. in human history

  558. and which he offers

  559. to you

  560. as pure gift.

  561. The gospel is the good news

  562. of what God really,

  563. truly did

  564. in space and time

  565. in human history

  566. in which he offers

  567. to you as pure gift.

  568. Look at this,

  569. how it begins.

  570. It doesn't sound like

  571. it's very dramatic,

  572. but what it says here

  573. is, but when the,

  574. verse four,

  575. but when the goodness

  576. and loving kindness

  577. of God our Savior

  578. appeared,

  579. he saved us.

  580. And the image here

  581. of appeared,

  582. in the original language,

  583. it's a light image.

  584. a light image.

  585. And it's an image

  586. of the room

  587. being completely

  588. and utterly dark.

  589. And actually,

  590. probably this room

  591. could be made

  592. to be fairly dark

  593. if you just put some things

  594. underneath the doors

  595. and you turned

  596. all the lights off,

  597. this room would be

  598. pretty, pretty dark.

  599. But let's say you could

  600. make the room

  601. completely and utterly dark,

  602. get rid of even

  603. the exit sign

  604. so it's completely dark.

  605. And all of a sudden,

  606. somebody turns on

  607. a flashlight,

  608. light appears

  609. in the room.

  610. And that's the image here

  611. that God,

  612. who is by himself

  613. goodness and loving kindness,

  614. the Savior appears,

  615. comes into this dark world

  616. and he's really present.

  617. Now, this,

  618. Paul is making a claim

  619. that this really,

  620. really, really,

  621. really truly happened,

  622. that it's not just a story.

  623. I love the Lord

  624. of the Rings books.

  625. I've probably read them

  626. ten times.

  627. You know,

  628. if Jesus tarries

  629. and I continue

  630. to be able to read,

  631. I'll probably read them

  632. another few times

  633. before I die.

  634. I like reading them

  635. every couple of years.

  636. I like the movies.

  637. And, you know,

  638. in the movie,

  639. just a little while ago,

  640. I was re-watching

  641. the third Lord

  642. of the Rings movie

  643. and one of my favorite

  644. scenes in all of movies

  645. is towards the end

  646. of the third

  647. Lord of the Rings movie

  648. and Aragorn,

  649. if you don't know

  650. anything about

  651. the Lord of the Rings,

  652. you know,

  653. you can think about

  654. your grocery list

  655. or something,

  656. but hopefully

  657. you can follow the image.

  658. The Aragorn

  659. has led this small group

  660. of fighters,

  661. the good guys,

  662. right to the gates

  663. of Mordor

  664. where the evil ruler is

  665. and the gates open up

  666. and there's this

  667. vast, vast, vast army

  668. that's about to approach them.

  669. There are this small number

  670. of soldiers,

  671. this vast army

  672. is about to approach them

  673. and I almost had Andrew

  674. put the speech up there

  675. but there's this wonderful thing,

  676. one of my favorite parts

  677. of movies

  678. where Aragorn

  679. starts to ride around

  680. and he said,

  681. there will come a day

  682. when the light of men

  683. will fade

  684. and the strength of men

  685. will fade

  686. but this is not that day.

  687. This is not that day

  688. and he keeps saying this

  689. as he's running around

  690. with his horses

  691. rallying the men.

  692. And I love watching that.

  693. I just love watching it.

  694. But it's just a story.

  695. Just made up.

  696. It's inspiring

  697. but it's just a story.

  698. And after you watch it,

  699. I maybe have to turn it off

  700. because I'm watching it downstairs

  701. because I have to go up

  702. and do the dishes

  703. because Louise wants me

  704. to do the dishes.

  705. You go back to the real world.

  706. The person who wrote this text,

  707. who had a record

  708. as long as your arm,

  709. who was well known

  710. to the authorities,

  711. who had died by beheading,

  712. died because he saw Jesus

  713. after Jesus had risen from the dead.

  714. And he,

  715. that so completely transformed him.

  716. He already was from Jerusalem.

  717. He knew that the grave was empty.

  718. He knew that nobody had taken the body.

  719. He saw Jesus

  720. after Jesus had resurrected from the dead

  721. and had led this man

  722. to leave his well-educated,

  723. politically, socially, culturally,

  724. and educationally secure role

  725. to a life that would mean

  726. that he'd eventually spend much time in jail

  727. and eventually be beheaded

  728. by a Roman soldier

  729. outside one of the gates of Rome.

  730. The entire,

  731. why is it that in Islam

  732. it doesn't matter

  733. if there's any miracles?

  734. It doesn't matter

  735. if there's any miracles in Buddhism.

  736. It doesn't matter

  737. if there's any miracles in Hinduism.

  738. But it matters to the Christian faith

  739. because at the very heart

  740. of the Christian faith

  741. is this claim

  742. that God breaks in,

  743. that God comes

  744. and actually acts

  745. in our midst.

  746. It doesn't matter

  747. whether things in the Koran

  748. on one level

  749. are completely historical.

  750. It doesn't matter at all

  751. whether anything

  752. about Buddha's life

  753. actually happened.

  754. In Hinduism,

  755. it doesn't matter

  756. whether things

  757. are historically accurate.

  758. It doesn't matter

  759. to any of these things.

  760. But why is it

  761. that Christians

  762. are concerned about

  763. whether or not

  764. Jesus actually rose from dead?

  765. Why is it?

  766. Well, it's because

  767. there's this belief

  768. that it really happened,

  769. that it's not just a story.

  770. It's not like listening

  771. to an actor

  772. pretend to be

  773. a fictional character

  774. giving a rousing speech

  775. to carry on

  776. and to fight

  777. against immeasurable odds.

  778. The claim is

  779. that it's not just a story,

  780. that it actually happened,

  781. that the God

  782. who really does exist

  783. is good and kind.

  784. He's not distant.

  785. He's not asleep.

  786. He's not powerless.

  787. He actually listens.

  788. He's involved in creation.

  789. He broke into time and space

  790. and human history

  791. in the person of his son.

  792. And his son lived

  793. a sinless life

  794. and then died

  795. a violent death

  796. upon the cross

  797. that if you went back in time,

  798. you would have seen

  799. the soldiers sweating

  800. and cursing

  801. just like soldiers do

  802. when they have a job

  803. they don't want to do

  804. on a hot day,

  805. probably muttering

  806. about stupid Jewish

  807. troublemakers

  808. causing them

  809. to have to spend the time

  810. on this hot and dusty day

  811. when they'd rather

  812. be in the shade

  813. with some nice wine

  814. and some hummus

  815. and some tabbouleh

  816. and cursing

  817. and the thing place

  818. was so public

  819. it had to,

  820. the charge against Jesus

  821. had to be in three languages.

  822. And the claim of the Bible

  823. is it really happened.

  824. The tomb was empty.

  825. And it was empty

  826. because Jesus

  827. had risen from the dead

  828. vindicating

  829. all of the promises of God

  830. and vindicating

  831. what he had said

  832. about who he is

  833. and that his death

  834. was not a mere death

  835. but was God's

  836. unbelievable

  837. but I hope you believe it.

  838. Counterintuitive

  839. action

  840. to save

  841. ordinary human beings

  842. like you and me.

  843. Human beings

  844. who are disobedient

  845. and foolish

  846. and led astray

  847. by various passions

  848. and pleasures

  849. and days of malice

  850. and cannot save ourselves.

  851. That the God

  852. who actually exists

  853. actually acted

  854. in human history.

  855. His salvation

  856. appears.

  857. And that's

  858. the Christian claim.

  859. And you'll notice

  860. that this is

  861. the spectacular thing.

  862. It just gives here

  863. three different images

  864. of what it is

  865. that God does.

  866. What it is

  867. that God does

  868. as his son

  869. who's lived

  870. a sinless life

  871. dies upon the cross

  872. and dies

  873. and tastes

  874. all there is to death

  875. and then rises again

  876. on the third day.

  877. Actually Andrew

  878. if you could put up

  879. the fourth point

  880. it sort of summarizes it

  881. but we'll just go through it.

  882. When I receive

  883. the gospel

  884. by faith alone

  885. God

  886. pours out

  887. his Holy Spirit

  888. upon me

  889. to give me

  890. new life

  891. he makes me

  892. right with himself

  893. and he

  894. adopts me

  895. as his

  896. precious

  897. child.

  898. Look at verses

  899. four to six again

  900. we'll see the three images

  901. but when the goodness

  902. and loving kindness

  903. of God

  904. our Savior

  905. appeared

  906. he

  907. saved

  908. us

  909. not because

  910. of works

  911. done by us

  912. in righteousness

  913. but according

  914. to his

  915. own mercy

  916. and here's

  917. the first image

  918. by the washing

  919. of regeneration

  920. and renewal

  921. of the Holy Spirit

  922. and that

  923. that image

  924. it's an image

  925. it's if

  926. it tries to picture

  927. that when you put

  928. your hands

  929. in the hands

  930. of Jesus

  931. and you trust him

  932. to be your Savior

  933. and your Lord

  934. when you put that

  935. you think of what

  936. Jesus has done

  937. for us on the cross

  938. you hear that

  939. it's God's provision

  940. to make us right

  941. you put our hands

  942. in the hands

  943. of Jesus

  944. and this isn't

  945. this once again

  946. this isn't an

  947. Aragorn story

  948. this isn't a

  949. Lord of the Rings story

  950. this isn't just

  951. something that's

  952. there to inspire

  953. you

  954. the Bible

  955. claims that

  956. this is God's

  957. own description

  958. of what he

  959. himself does

  960. for ordinary

  961. people who put

  962. their faith

  963. and trust in him

  964. and we can trust

  965. the word of God

  966. because

  967. the tomb

  968. is empty

  969. and Jesus

  970. is risen

  971. and that when

  972. we put our hands

  973. in the hands

  974. of Jesus

  975. as an ordinary

  976. person

  977. unable to save

  978. ourselves

  979. one of the things

  980. to understand

  981. is if God

  982. pours out

  983. just like we

  984. can have

  985. consent underneath

  986. a waterfall

  987. and the water

  988. pours out

  989. but here the

  990. image is

  991. that it's as if

  992. the Holy Spirit

  993. is like a waterfall

  994. and it not only

  995. comes and falls

  996. upon us

  997. as our body

  998. but actually

  999. comes and

  1000. enters into

  1001. our mind

  1002. and our heart

  1003. and our will

  1004. and our soul

  1005. that the Holy Spirit

  1006. is richly

  1007. deeply poured out

  1008. upon who we are

  1009. and the result

  1010. of that

  1011. pouring out

  1012. is that it

  1013. is if I

  1014. have been

  1015. given a new

  1016. life

  1017. that comes

  1018. from God

  1019. that's what

  1020. regeneration

  1021. means

  1022. and restored

  1023. means that I'm

  1024. still human

  1025. he doesn't

  1026. turn me

  1027. into an angel

  1028. he makes me

  1029. restored

  1030. to what I was

  1031. originally meant

  1032. to be

  1033. and the second

  1034. image comes

  1035. right after it

  1036. whom he poured

  1037. out

  1038. so verse 6

  1039. whom he poured

  1040. out on us

  1041. richly through

  1042. Jesus Christ

  1043. our Savior

  1044. so that being

  1045. justified

  1046. by his grace

  1047. just a couple

  1048. of weeks ago

  1049. I was in

  1050. Vancouver

  1051. because I

  1052. helped to

  1053. organize a

  1054. conference that

  1055. was there

  1056. and on the

  1057. Monday night

  1058. before the

  1059. conference began

  1060. I was with

  1061. several

  1062. and we also

  1063. took out

  1064. one of the

  1065. guest speakers

  1066. and we took

  1067. him out to

  1068. this simple

  1069. restaurant

  1070. and I said

  1071. I'm going to

  1072. pay for the

  1073. guest speakers

  1074. so I give

  1075. the waitress

  1076. my credit card

  1077. and you know

  1078. it's just all

  1079. chatting

  1080. declined

  1081. well this is

  1082. a bit

  1083. embarrassing

  1084. and so

  1085. I say

  1086. well let's

  1087. just try it

  1088. again

  1089. and you know

  1090. because

  1091. we all know

  1092. that's how

  1093. things work

  1094. right

  1095. it's declined

  1096. try it again

  1097. maybe it won't

  1098. be declined

  1099. the second

  1100. time

  1101. I don't know

  1102. why

  1103. maybe Pixies

  1104. will you know

  1105. sprinkle Pixie

  1106. dust on it

  1107. but I try it

  1108. the second

  1109. time

  1110. it's declined

  1111. again

  1112. this is very

  1113. embarrassing

  1114. fortunately

  1115. I have a

  1116. second credit

  1117. card

  1118. I give them

  1119. the second

  1120. credit card

  1121. it goes

  1122. through

  1123. and then

  1124. afterwards

  1125. I'm

  1126. calling

  1127. after as I'm

  1128. walking back

  1129. to the hotel

  1130. I call

  1131. the credit

  1132. card company

  1133. and they say

  1134. we can't tell you

  1135. why it was

  1136. declined

  1137. but you have

  1138. to go to

  1139. a bank

  1140. branch

  1141. and bring

  1142. two pieces

  1143. of ID

  1144. so the next

  1145. day I go

  1146. to the bank

  1147. branch

  1148. passport

  1149. driver's

  1150. license

  1151. it turns

  1152. out that

  1153. Julie Lynn

  1154. Spence

  1155. had applied

  1156. for a

  1157. second credit

  1158. card

  1159. and an

  1160. additional

  1161. credit card

  1162. on mine

  1163. and

  1164. purchases

  1165. all that

  1166. type of

  1167. stuff

  1168. the alarm

  1169. bells

  1170. went off

  1171. they froze

  1172. the card

  1173. so now

  1174. I'm on

  1175. the phone

  1176. with them

  1177. and what

  1178. do I

  1179. want

  1180. I want

  1181. them to

  1182. make it

  1183. right

  1184. I'm not

  1185. mad

  1186. I want

  1187. them to

  1188. make it

  1189. right

  1190. isn't that

  1191. what you'd

  1192. want

  1193. I can't

  1194. make it

  1195. right

  1196. what do I

  1197. want

  1198. I want

  1199. them to

  1200. make it

  1201. right

  1202. I want

  1203. the other

  1204. person's

  1205. credit card

  1206. cancelled

  1207. they're going

  1208. to have

  1209. to cancel

  1210. my credit

  1211. card

  1212. they're going

  1213. to have

  1214. to mail

  1215. me another

  1216. credit card

  1217. by express

  1218. delivery

  1219. because they

  1220. want to do

  1221. it as quickly

  1222. as possible

  1223. they have

  1224. to make

  1225. sure that

  1226. there's no

  1227. purchases on

  1228. there that

  1229. if there are

  1230. purchases on

  1231. that card

  1232. that weren't

  1233. made by me

  1234. but by this

  1235. person who

  1236. was trying to

  1237. defraud and

  1238. steal from

  1239. me that

  1240. those purchases

  1241. are reversed

  1242. they don't have

  1243. to pay for it

  1244. I can go on

  1245. right

  1246. I want

  1247. to make

  1248. it right

  1249. I want

  1250. them to

  1251. make it

  1252. right

  1253. that's what

  1254. the word

  1255. justified

  1256. means

  1257. God makes

  1258. it right

  1259. God makes

  1260. it right

  1261. for me

  1262. and what's

  1263. the third

  1264. image of

  1265. what God

  1266. does

  1267. what is

  1268. it that

  1269. when we

  1270. see Jesus

  1271. dying upon

  1272. the cross

  1273. and rising

  1274. from the

  1275. dead

  1276. and when

  1277. we

  1278. accept

  1279. him

  1280. when we

  1281. trust

  1282. that this

  1283. is God's

  1284. provision

  1285. to save

  1286. us

  1287. he not

  1288. only

  1289. pours out

  1290. the Holy

  1291. Spirit

  1292. upon us

  1293. to make

  1294. us

  1295. like give

  1296. us actual

  1297. new life

  1298. that comes

  1299. from God

  1300. he also

  1301. makes it

  1302. right with

  1303. him

  1304. and the

  1305. third

  1306. thing

  1307. is

  1308. what is

  1309. the third

  1310. thing

  1311. look at

  1312. this again

  1313. so that

  1314. being

  1315. justified

  1316. by his

  1317. grace

  1318. we might

  1319. become

  1320. heirs

  1321. according to

  1322. the hope

  1323. of eternal

  1324. life

  1325. he adopts

  1326. you

  1327. he adopts

  1328. you

  1329. in Roman

  1330. culture

  1331. you could

  1332. adopt a

  1333. person

  1334. at any

  1335. age

  1336. and

  1337. here's

  1338. the

  1339. wonderful

  1340. thing

  1341. about

  1342. this

  1343. image

  1344. look at

  1345. that

  1346. first

  1347. image

  1348. the

  1349. image

  1350. I

  1351. just

  1352. gave

  1353. you

  1354. about

  1355. the

  1356. problem

  1357. with

  1358. the

  1359. credit

  1360. card

  1361. that

  1362. I

  1363. had

  1364. at

  1365. the

  1366. end

  1367. of

  1368. the

  1369. day

  1370. they

  1371. made

  1372. it

  1373. right

  1374. but

  1375. all

  1376. it

  1377. making

  1378. it

  1379. right

  1380. means

  1381. is

  1382. that

  1383. all

  1384. the

  1385. debts

  1386. that

  1387. are

  1388. mine

  1389. I

  1390. still

  1391. have

  1392. to

  1393. pay

  1394. but

  1395. this

  1396. is

  1397. a

  1398. different

  1399. image

  1400. it's

  1401. not

  1402. just

  1403. that

  1404. God

  1405. removes

  1406. things

  1407. the

  1408. actual

  1409. sinless

  1410. life

  1411. of

  1412. Jesus

  1413. is

  1414. now

  1415. going

  1416. to

  1417. stand

  1418. for

  1419. me

  1420. that

  1421. the

  1422. actual

  1423. riches

  1424. of

  1425. God

  1426. are

  1427. now

  1428. going

  1429. to

  1430. be

  1431. mine

  1432. this

  1433. is

  1434. going

  1435. beyond

  1436. the

  1437. second

  1438. image

  1439. to

  1440. discover

  1441. you

  1442. wake

  1443. up

  1444. and

  1445. discover

  1446. that

  1447. Bill

  1448. Gates

  1449. adopted

  1450. you

  1451. I

  1452. don't

  1453. know

  1454. how

  1455. many

  1456. billions

  1457. of

  1458. dollars

  1459. is

  1460. he

  1461. worth

  1462. all

  1463. of a

  1464. sudden

  1465. you've

  1466. been

  1467. adopted

  1468. by

  1469. a

  1470. billionaire

  1471. who

  1472. cares

  1473. about

  1474. the

  1475. credit

  1476. card

  1477. balance

  1478. you

  1479. can

  1480. pay

  1481. anyone

  1482. off

  1483. and

  1484. that's

  1485. the

  1486. third

  1487. image

  1488. here

  1489. this

  1490. is

  1491. what

  1492. God

  1493. does

  1494. for

  1495. you

  1496. in

  1497. the

  1498. person

  1499. of

  1500. his

  1501. son

  1502. when

  1503. his

  1504. son

  1505. dies

  1506. upon

  1507. the

  1508. cross

  1509. now

  1510. and

  1511. you

  1512. see

  1513. this

  1514. is

  1515. a

  1516. really

  1517. really

  1518. important

  1519. thing

  1520. if

  1521. you

  1522. could

  1523. put

  1524. up

  1525. the

  1526. next

  1527. point

  1528. please

  1529. that

  1530. would

  1531. be

  1532. very

  1533. helpful

  1534. another

  1535. way

  1536. to

  1537. express

  1538. what

  1539. I

  1540. just

  1541. expressed

  1542. is a

  1543. very

  1544. classic

  1545. way

  1546. of

  1547. referring

  1548. to

  1549. it

  1550. that

  1551. I

  1552. am

  1553. saved

  1554. by

  1555. God's

  1556. grace

  1557. alone

  1558. in

  1559. Christ

  1560. alone

  1561. through

  1562. faith

  1563. alone

  1564. God

  1565. saves

  1566. me

  1567. because

  1568. he's

  1569. gracious

  1570. he

  1571. saves

  1572. me

  1573. in

  1574. Jesus

  1575. I

  1576. receive

  1577. his

  1578. salvation

  1579. by

  1580. putting

  1581. my

  1582. faith

  1583. and

  1584. trust

  1585. in

  1586. him

  1587. by

  1588. recognizing

  1589. that

  1590. it's

  1591. not

  1592. what

  1593. I

  1594. do

  1595. or

  1596. can

  1597. do

  1598. or

  1599. ever

  1600. can

  1601. do

  1602. but

  1603. that

  1604. God

  1605. does

  1606. it

  1607. for

  1608. me

  1609. when

  1610. I

  1611. turn

  1612. to

  1613. him

  1614. and

  1615. acknowledge

  1616. that

  1617. I

  1618. need

  1619. him

  1620. to

  1621. save

  1622. me

  1623. you

  1624. see

  1625. for

  1626. many

  1627. many

  1628. people

  1629. in

  1630. Canada

  1631. we're

  1632. going to

  1633. wrap

  1634. it up

  1635. very

  1636. quickly

  1637. for

  1638. many

  1639. people

  1640. in

  1641. Canada

  1642. so

  1643. for

  1644. many

  1645. people

  1646. in

  1647. Canada

  1648. they

  1649. would

  1650. now

  1651. just

  1652. say

  1653. that

  1654. when

  1655. you

  1656. die

  1657. that's

  1658. it

  1659. you

  1660. die

  1661. you

  1662. die

  1663. before

  1664. I

  1665. became

  1666. a

  1667. Christian

  1668. that's

  1669. what

  1670. I

  1671. would

  1672. have

  1673. said

  1674. you

  1675. die

  1676. you

  1677. die

  1678. it

  1679. doesn't

  1680. matter

  1681. that

  1682. you

  1683. live

  1684. on

  1685. in

  1686. somebody's

  1687. memories

  1688. as

  1689. Woody Allen

  1690. famously

  1691. said

  1692. I

  1693. have

  1694. no

  1695. comfort

  1696. in

  1697. the

  1698. fact

  1699. that

  1700. when

  1701. I

  1702. die

  1703. I

  1704. live

  1705. on

  1706. in

  1707. people's

  1708. memories

  1709. because

  1710. I

  1711. want

  1712. to

  1713. live

  1714. in

  1715. my

  1716. apartment

  1717. and

  1718. so

  1719. for

  1720. many

  1721. people

  1722. you

  1723. die

  1724. you

  1725. die

  1726. but

  1727. for

  1728. many

  1729. other

  1730. people

  1731. you

  1732. say

  1733. when

  1734. you

  1735. die

  1736. you

  1737. go

  1738. to

  1739. a

  1740. better

  1741. place

  1742. and

  1743. so

  1744. for

  1745. the

  1746. average

  1747. Canadian

  1748. what

  1749. they

  1750. sort

  1751. of

  1752. think

  1753. about

  1754. it

  1755. is

  1756. that

  1757. every

  1758. day

  1759. I've

  1760. done

  1761. five

  1762. good

  1763. things

  1764. it's

  1765. as if

  1766. there's

  1767. this

  1768. heavenly

  1769. bank

  1770. account

  1771. better

  1772. place

  1773. bank

  1774. account

  1775. I

  1776. do

  1777. five

  1778. good

  1779. things

  1780. it's

  1781. a

  1782. little

  1783. bit

  1784. of

  1785. of

  1786. some

  1787. money

  1788. going

  1789. in

  1790. my

  1791. better

  1792. place

  1793. bank

  1794. account

  1795. I

  1796. better

  1797. place

  1798. bank

  1799. account

  1800. you'd

  1801. see

  1802. that

  1803. you

  1804. know

  1805. it's

  1806. pretty

  1807. close

  1808. to

  1809. at least

  1810. affording

  1811. a down

  1812. payment

  1813. on a

  1814. mortgage

  1815. and

  1816. God

  1817. gives

  1818. interest

  1819. free

  1820. loans

  1821. and

  1822. I'm

  1823. sure

  1824. I'm

  1825. going to

  1826. go to

  1827. a

  1828. better

  1829. place

  1830. and

  1831. the

  1832. Bible

  1833. shocking

  1834. news

  1835. is

  1836. that

  1837. if

  1838. you

  1839. could

  1840. actually

  1841. look

  1842. at

  1843. your

  1844. better

  1845. place

  1846. bank

  1847. account

  1848. you'd

  1849. see

  1850. that

  1851. you

  1852. owe

  1853. 500

  1854. million

  1855. dollars

  1856. you have

  1857. absolutely

  1858. no

  1859. hope

  1860. and so

  1861. for the

  1862. average

  1863. Canadian

  1864. when they

  1865. me

  1866. yeah

  1867. like

  1868. your

  1869. poop

  1870. smells

  1871. better

  1872. than

  1873. mine

  1874. does

  1875. not

  1876. that's

  1877. why

  1878. you see

  1879. verse

  1880. three

  1881. is

  1882. so

  1883. central

  1884. to

  1885. the

  1886. gospel

  1887. and

  1888. why

  1889. how

  1890. I've

  1891. summarized

  1892. it

  1893. in

  1894. that

  1895. I

  1896. am

  1897. saved

  1898. by

  1899. God's

  1900. grace

  1901. alone

  1902. in

  1903. Christ

  1904. alone

  1905. through

  1906. faith

  1907. alone

  1908. is

  1909. so

  1910. unbelievably

  1911. important

  1912. to

  1913. communicate

  1914. because

  1915. we can

  1916. get it

  1917. wrong

  1918. I grew

  1919. up in

  1920. a

  1921. house

  1922. my

  1923. parents

  1924. are

  1925. Northern

  1926. Ireland

  1927. Protestants

  1928. I'm

  1929. a

  1930. child

  1931. of

  1932. immigrants

  1933. and

  1934. my

  1935. parents

  1936. if

  1937. I

  1938. had

  1939. done

  1940. something

  1941. that

  1942. was

  1943. really

  1944. good

  1945. or

  1946. really

  1947. smart

  1948. or

  1949. really

  1950. beautiful

  1951. they'd

  1952. say

  1953. that's

  1954. very

  1955. Protestant

  1956. of

  1957. you

  1958. that's

  1959. very

  1960. Protestant

  1961. of

  1962. you

  1963. the

  1964. implication

  1965. being

  1966. that

  1967. Catholics

  1968. aren't

  1969. like

  1970. that

  1971. but

  1972. Protestants

  1973. our

  1974. poop

  1975. smells

  1976. better

  1977. than

  1978. Catholic

  1979. poop

  1980. which

  1981. of

  1982. course

  1983. is

  1984. completely

  1985. and utterly

  1986. ridiculous

  1987. you

  1988. see

  1989. it's

  1990. so

  1991. easy

  1992. to

  1993. quickly

  1994. get

  1995. back

  1996. to

  1997. believing

  1998. what

  1999. you

  2000. see

  2001. that's

  2002. why

  2003. the

  2004. gospel

  2005. is

  2006. so

  2007. important

  2008. it's

  2009. easy

  2010. to

  2011. turn

  2012. the

  2013. gospel

  2014. into

  2015. a

  2016. list

  2017. of

  2018. rules

  2019. about

  2020. Old

  2021. Testament

  2022. rules

  2023. or

  2024. about

  2025. genealogies

  2026. you

  2027. know

  2028. you

  2029. have

  2030. a

  2031. Protestant

  2032. genealogy

  2033. see

  2034. that's

  2035. what

  2036. Paul

  2037. is

  2038. talking

  2039. about

  2040. when

  2041. he

  2042. keeps

  2043. on

  2044. going

  2045. right

  2046. here

  2047. I've

  2048. skipped

  2049. a

  2050. look

  2051. on

  2052. verse

  2053. 8

  2054. this

  2055. saying

  2056. is

  2057. trustworthy

  2058. the

  2059. gospel

  2060. and I

  2061. want

  2062. you

  2063. to

  2064. insist

  2065. on

  2066. those

  2067. things

  2068. so

  2069. that

  2070. those

  2071. who

  2072. have

  2073. believed

  2074. in

  2075. God

  2076. may

  2077. be

  2078. careful

  2079. to

  2080. devote

  2081. themselves

  2082. to

  2083. good

  2084. works

  2085. I'm

  2086. going to

  2087. explain

  2088. that

  2089. in a

  2090. moment

  2091. these

  2092. things

  2093. are

  2094. excellent

  2095. and

  2096. profitable

  2097. for

  2098. people

  2099. but

  2100. avoid

  2101. foolish

  2102. controversies

  2103. genealogies

  2104. dissensions

  2105. and quarrels

  2106. about the

  2107. law

  2108. for they

  2109. are

  2110. unprofitable

  2111. and worthless

  2112. as for

  2113. a person

  2114. who stirs

  2115. up the

  2116. vision

  2117. after

  2118. warning

  2119. them

  2120. once

  2121. and

  2122. then

  2123. twice

  2124. have

  2125. nothing

  2126. more

  2127. to

  2128. do

  2129. with

  2130. them

  2131. knowing

  2132. that

  2133. such

  2134. a

  2135. person

  2136. is

  2137. warped

  2138. and

  2139. sinful

  2140. he

  2141. is

  2142. self

  2143. condemned

  2144. you

  2145. see

  2146. if you

  2147. could

  2148. put up

  2149. the

  2150. next

  2151. point

  2152. a

  2153. gospel

  2154. centered

  2155. church

  2156. will

  2157. humbly

  2158. but

  2159. firmly

  2160. guard

  2161. the

  2162. gospel

  2163. from

  2164. those

  2165. who

  2166. push

  2167. false

  2168. gospels

  2169. because

  2170. it's

  2171. the

  2172. gospel

  2173. that

  2174. saves

  2175. us

  2176. it's

  2177. so

  2178. easy

  2179. for

  2180. us

  2181. to

  2182. start

  2183. to

  2184. think

  2185. that

  2186. it's

  2187. about

  2188. our

  2189. own

  2190. righteousness

  2191. that

  2192. it's

  2193. about

  2194. our

  2195. own

  2196. being

  2197. somehow

  2198. better

  2199. than

  2200. other

  2201. people

  2202. Spurgeon

  2203. tells

  2204. it

  2205. truer

  2206. the

  2207. Christian

  2208. gospel

  2209. the

  2210. Christian

  2211. faith

  2212. is

  2213. one

  2214. beggar

  2215. telling

  2216. another

  2217. beggar

  2218. where

  2219. to

  2220. receive

  2221. free

  2222. bread

  2223. and

  2224. I'm

  2225. saved

  2226. by

  2227. faith

  2228. alone

  2229. because

  2230. God

  2231. is

  2232. gracious

  2233. and

  2234. what

  2235. he

  2236. did

  2237. for

  2238. me

  2239. in

  2240. Jesus

  2241. he

  2242. does

  2243. not

  2244. weigh

  2245. my

  2246. merits

  2247. at

  2248. all

  2249. but

  2250. you

  2251. know

  2252. this

  2253. whole

  2254. thing

  2255. and

  2256. Christians

  2257. now

  2258. aren't

  2259. saying

  2260. that

  2261. they're

  2262. perfect

  2263. we

  2264. live

  2265. in

  2266. the

  2267. already

  2268. not

  2269. yet

  2270. the

  2271. time

  2272. of

  2273. Jesus

  2274. appearing

  2275. the

  2276. second

  2277. time

  2278. in

  2279. glory

  2280. when

  2281. we

  2282. will

  2283. receive

  2284. our

  2285. new

  2286. resurrection

  2287. bodies

  2288. and

  2289. complete

  2290. transformation

  2291. of who

  2292. we

  2293. are

  2294. that

  2295. is

  2296. still

  2297. in

  2298. the

  2299. future

  2300. and

  2301. that

  2302. describes

  2303. us

  2304. we

  2305. have

  2306. been

  2307. given

  2308. new

  2309. life

  2310. in

  2311. Jesus

  2312. when

  2313. we

  2314. put

  2315. our

  2316. faith

  2317. and

  2318. trust

  2319. in

  2320. him

  2321. he

  2322. is

  2323. the

  2324. one

  2325. who's

  2326. made

  2327. it

  2328. right

  2329. he's

  2330. done

  2331. that

  2332. completely

  2333. and utterly

  2334. and

  2335. it's

  2336. very

  2337. very

  2338. important

  2339. to be

  2340. gripped

  2341. in

  2342. the

  2343. gospel

  2344. by

  2345. this

  2346. because

  2347. you

  2348. see

  2349. when

  2350. we're

  2351. gripped

  2352. by

  2353. how

  2354. we

  2355. justify

  2356. ourselves

  2357. or

  2358. how

  2359. we

  2360. make

  2361. ourselves

  2362. righteous

  2363. it's

  2364. as

  2365. if

  2366. you

  2367. have

  2368. to

  2369. fix

  2370. the

  2371. eaves

  2372. on the

  2373. third

  2374. floor

  2375. of

  2376. a

  2377. house

  2378. and

  2379. your

  2380. ladder

  2381. is

  2382. not

  2383. long

  2384. enough

  2385. so

  2386. you

  2387. put

  2388. the

  2389. ladder

  2390. on

  2391. a

  2392. trampoline

  2393. do

  2394. not

  2395. try

  2396. this

  2397. and

  2398. you

  2399. put

  2400. the

  2401. ladder

  2402. on

  2403. a

  2404. trampoline

  2405. and

  2406. then

  2407. you

  2408. go

  2409. and

  2410. try

  2411. to

  2412. fix

  2413. stuff

  2414. in

  2415. the

  2416. eaves

  2417. on

  2418. the

  2419. third

  2420. floor

  2421. it's

  2422. inherently

  2423. unstable

  2424. and

  2425. that's

  2426. why

  2427. when we

  2428. base

  2429. our

  2430. lives

  2431. on

  2432. our

  2433. own

  2434. righteousness

  2435. and

  2436. our

  2437. own

  2438. justification

  2439. it's

  2440. very

  2441. hard

  2442. young

  2443. woman's

  2444. life

  2445. when I

  2446. walked

  2447. out

  2448. the

  2449. door

  2450. because

  2451. she

  2452. remembered

  2453. the

  2454. terrible

  2455. things

  2456. that I

  2457. did

  2458. to

  2459. her

  2460. and

  2461. if

  2462. you

  2463. entirely

  2464. are

  2465. trying

  2466. to

  2467. justify

  2468. yourself

  2469. and

  2470. make

  2471. yourself

  2472. righteous

  2473. how

  2474. can

  2475. you

  2476. look

  2477. at

  2478. the

  2479. black

  2480. hole

  2481. within

  2482. but

  2483. when

  2484. we're

  2485. gripped

  2486. by

  2487. the

  2488. gospel

  2489. when

  2490. we

  2491. realize

  2492. that

  2493. when

  2494. I

  2495. it

  2496. is

  2497. God

  2498. through

  2499. the

  2500. person

  2501. of

  2502. his

  2503. son

  2504. he

  2505. did

  2506. everything

  2507. with

  2508. nothing

  2509. left

  2510. over

  2511. to

  2512. make

  2513. me

  2514. right

  2515. with

  2516. himself

  2517. that

  2518. it's

  2519. Jesus

  2520. his

  2521. death

  2522. upon

  2523. the

  2524. cross

  2525. his

  2526. resurrection

  2527. the

  2528. point

  2529. out

  2530. of

  2531. the

  2532. Holy

  2533. Spirit

  2534. that's

  2535. what

  2536. gives

  2537. me

  2538. new

  2539. life

  2540. God

  2541. gives

  2542. me

  2543. that

  2544. new

  2545. life

  2546. I

  2547. didn't

  2548. evolve

  2549. into

  2550. new

  2551. life

  2552. I

  2553. didn't

  2554. invent

  2555. or

  2556. create

  2557. this

  2558. God

  2559. does

  2560. it

  2561. that

  2562. God

  2563. adopts

  2564. me

  2565. as

  2566. his

  2567. child

  2568. that

  2569. no

  2570. amount

  2571. of

  2572. good

  2573. things

  2574. that

  2575. I

  2576. can

  2577. ever

  2578. possibly

  2579. do

  2580. can

  2581. add

  2582. to

  2583. God

  2584. being

  2585. my

  2586. father

  2587. who

  2588. has

  2589. taken

  2590. me

  2591. as

  2592. his

  2593. child

  2594. but

  2595. nothing

  2596. that

  2597. I

  2598. can

  2599. do

  2600. can

  2601. add

  2602. to

  2603. that

  2604. that

  2605. it's

  2606. all

  2607. been

  2608. dealt

  2609. with

  2610. by

  2611. the

  2612. person

  2613. of

  2614. Jesus

  2615. and

  2616. as

  2617. the

  2618. gospel

  2619. grips

  2620. us

  2621. in

  2622. my

  2623. day-to-day

  2624. life

  2625. I

  2626. can

  2627. look

  2628. at

  2629. the

  2630. fact

  2631. of

  2632. how

  2633. I

  2634. hate

  2635. another

  2636. person

  2637. I

  2638. have

  2639. to

  2640. deal

  2641. with

  2642. that

  2643. where

  2644. a

  2645. person

  2646. hates

  2647. me

  2648. I

  2649. have

  2650. to

  2651. deal

  2652. with

  2653. that

  2654. I

  2655. can

  2656. look

  2657. at

  2658. that

  2659. I

  2660. am

  2661. not

  2662. trying

  2663. to

  2664. fix

  2665. something

  2666. on the

  2667. third

  2668. floor

  2669. of

  2670. a

  2671. shaky

  2672. ladder

  2673. on a

  2674. trampoline

  2675. and

  2676. you

  2677. see

  2678. that's

  2679. why

  2680. in

  2681. this

  2682. entire

  2683. thing

  2684. there's

  2685. this

  2686. surprising

  2687. reversal

  2688. you

  2689. don't

  2690. show

  2691. courtesy

  2692. to

  2693. perfect

  2694. courtesy

  2695. to

  2696. everyone

  2697. to

  2698. make

  2699. God

  2700. love

  2701. you

  2702. and

  2703. to

  2704. look

  2705. righteous

  2706. but

  2707. as

  2708. you

  2709. are

  2710. gripped

  2711. by

  2712. what

  2713. Jesus

  2714. did

  2715. for

  2716. you

  2717. on

  2718. the

  2719. cross

  2720. as

  2721. you

  2722. are

  2723. grounded

  2724. on

  2725. that

  2726. and

  2727. begin

  2728. to

  2729. have

  2730. the

  2731. ability

  2732. to

  2733. look

  2734. at

  2735. those

  2736. parts

  2737. of

  2738. who

  2739. you

  2740. are

  2741. that

  2742. are

  2743. very

  2744. bad

  2745. as

  2746. you

  2747. consider

  2748. the

  2749. courtesy

  2750. that

  2751. God

  2752. showed

  2753. to

  2754. you

  2755. to

  2756. save

  2757. you

  2758. you

  2759. start

  2760. to

  2761. want

  2762. to

  2763. show

  2764. courtesy

  2765. courtesy

  2766. makes

  2767. sense

  2768. even

  2769. to a

  2770. person

  2771. who's

  2772. wronged

  2773. you

  2774. courtesy

  2775. begins

  2776. to

  2777. make

  2778. sense

  2779. when

  2780. you

  2781. realize

  2782. how

  2783. gently

  2784. God

  2785. has

  2786. dealt

  2787. with

  2788. you

  2789. gentleness

  2790. makes

  2791. sense

  2792. that's

  2793. why

  2794. virtue

  2795. emerges

  2796. out of

  2797. being

  2798. gripped

  2799. by the

  2800. gospel

  2801. whereas

  2802. if you

  2803. try to

  2804. make

  2805. yourself

  2806. right

  2807. with

  2808. God

  2809. through

  2810. virtue

  2811. you

  2812. will

  2813. always

  2814. be

  2815. anxious

  2816. and

  2817. insecure

  2818. but

  2819. when

  2820. your

  2821. identity

  2822. is

  2823. rooted

  2824. in

  2825. verses

  2826. 3

  2827. to

  2828. 7

  2829. of

  2830. Titus

  2831. you

  2832. start

  2833. to

  2834. have

  2835. the

  2836. type

  2837. of

  2838. security

  2839. and

  2840. wholeness

  2841. to

  2842. deal

  2843. with

  2844. hatred

  2845. and

  2846. being

  2847. led

  2848. astray

  2849. and

  2850. to

  2851. apologize

  2852. and

  2853. to

  2854. be

  2855. gentle

  2856. life

  2857. transformation

  2858. comes

  2859. from

  2860. being

  2861. gripped

  2862. by the

  2863. gospel

  2864. could

  2865. you

  2866. put

  2867. the

  2868. final

  2869. point

  2870. up

  2871. Andrew

  2872. could

  2873. you

  2874. all

  2875. stand

  2876. please

  2877. I

  2878. don't

  2879. know

  2880. where

  2881. you

  2882. are

  2883. with

  2884. God

  2885. and

  2886. you're

  2887. here

  2888. today

  2889. but

  2890. you

  2891. know

  2892. there's

  2893. an

  2894. old

  2895. way

  2896. about

  2897. how

  2898. do

  2899. you

  2900. become

  2901. a

  2902. Christian

  2903. there's

  2904. the

  2905. ABCD

  2906. method

  2907. I'm

  2908. a

  2909. very

  2910. simple

  2911. minded

  2912. man

  2913. my

  2914. wife

  2915. will

  2916. tell

  2917. you

  2918. that

  2919. I'm

  2920. very

  2921. simple

  2922. minded

  2923. some

  2924. of

  2925. you

  2926. say

  2927. George

  2928. you

  2929. aren't

  2930. simple

  2931. minded

  2932. no

  2933. I

  2934. really

  2935. I'm

  2936. very

  2937. simple

  2938. minded

  2939. and

  2940. how

  2941. do

  2942. you

  2943. become

  2944. a

  2945. Christian

  2946. ABCD

  2947. there's

  2948. something

  2949. to

  2950. acknowledge

  2951. that's

  2952. verse

  2953. three

  2954. you

  2955. can't

  2956. save

  2957. yourself

  2958. you

  2959. have

  2960. to

  2961. have

  2962. God

  2963. save

  2964. you

  2965. there's

  2966. something

  2967. to

  2968. believe

  2969. that

  2970. God

  2971. has

  2972. done

  2973. something

  2974. in the

  2975. person

  2976. of

  2977. his

  2978. son

  2979. that

  2980. will

  2981. make

  2982. you

  2983. right

  2984. with

  2985. him

  2986. and

  2987. there's

  2988. C

  2989. something

  2990. to

  2991. consider

  2992. to

  2993. consider

  2994. that

  2995. if

  2996. you

  2997. put

  2998. your

  2999. hands

  3000. in

  3001. the

  3002. hands

  3003. of

  3004. Jesus

  3005. your

  3006. life

  3007. will

  3008. start

  3009. to

  3010. change

  3011. you

  3012. will

  3013. have

  3014. to

  3015. start

  3016. dealing

  3017. God

  3018. the

  3019. gospel

  3020. will

  3021. start

  3022. to

  3023. lead

  3024. you

  3025. to

  3026. deal

  3027. with

  3028. people

  3029. who

  3030. hate

  3031. you

  3032. you

  3033. might

  3034. have

  3035. to

  3036. make

  3037. amends

  3038. that

  3039. people

  3040. whom

  3041. you

  3042. hate

  3043. you

  3044. might

  3045. have

  3046. to

  3047. begin

  3048. a

  3049. journey

  3050. of

  3051. forgiveness

  3052. but

  3053. then

  3054. there's

  3055. something

  3056. to

  3057. decide

  3058. that

  3059. it's

  3060. worth

  3061. it

  3062. and

  3063. there's

  3064. no

  3065. better

  3066. time

  3067. than

  3068. right

  3069. now

  3070. if

  3071. you

  3072. haven't

  3073. put

  3074. your

  3075. hands

  3076. in

  3077. the

  3078. hands

  3079. of

  3080. Jesus

  3081. there

  3082. is

  3083. no

  3084. time

  3085. better

  3086. what's

  3087. keeping

  3088. you

  3089. from

  3090. doing

  3091. it

  3092. right

  3093. now

  3094. what's

  3095. stopping

  3096. you

  3097. from

  3098. putting

  3099. your

  3100. hands

  3101. in

  3102. the

  3103. hands

  3104. of

  3105. Jesus

  3106. who

  3107. knowing

  3108. every

  3109. single

  3110. thing

  3111. there is

  3112. to

  3113. know

  3114. about

  3115. you

  3116. not

  3117. as

  3118. an

  3120. but

  3124. and

  3125. yet

  3126. he

  3127. died

  3128. on

  3129. the

  3130. cross

  3131. for

  3137. perfectly

  3138. will

  3141. his

  3142. Holy

  3143. Spirit

  3144. upon

  3145. you

  3146. in

  3147. such

  3148. a

  3149. way

  3150. that

  3151. you

  3152. have

  3153. given

  3154. new

  3155. life

  3156. that

  3157. God

  3158. will

  3159. make

  3160. you

  3161. right

  3162. with

  3167. you

  3168. from

  3175. this

  3176. is

  3177. a

  3178. conversion

  3179. prayer

  3180. and

  3181. for

  3182. the

  3183. rest

  3184. of

  3185. us

  3186. it's

  3187. a

  3188. sanctification

  3189. prayer

  3190. to

  3191. realize

  3192. our

  3193. need

  3194. to
