  1. Father, we come before your word.

  2. Father, your word talks of people that we don't really know,

  3. of countries that we no longer know.

  4. Father, we know that it was written almost 3,000 years ago,

  5. and it can be hard for us to enter into it.

  6. And Father, for some of us who are just familiar with certain parts of the New Testament,

  7. this part of the Bible sounds very strange and odd to us.

  8. We ask, Father, that you would gently but deeply pour out your Holy Spirit upon us

  9. and humble and quieten our hearts so that we might hear your word,

  10. that your word might enter deep within who we are

  11. and there bear much fruit in our daily lives to your great glory

  12. and the furtherance of your kingdom.

  13. And this we ask in Jesus' name, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  14. Please be seated.

  15. When I first, sorry, I felt that God was calling us to look at the book of Amos

  16. during the summer every year at Church of the Messiah.

  17. We like to take at least some of the teaching from the Old Testament.

  18. It's really helpful, I think, for Christians to have the pastor

  19. or other speakers go through an Old Testament book

  20. to help us to try to read things which are very strange.

  21. And I don't know how many of you are aware of this,

  22. but there's part of the book of Amos,

  23. not the part that we're going to look at particularly today,

  24. but from a literary point of view,

  25. actually sort of in some ways the turning point

  26. or the key foundational text of the whole book of Amos

  27. played a very important role in the history of the United States of America.

  28. Andrew's going to be getting things set up on the screen right now as I speak

  29. because in a moment I'm going to show you a film clip.

  30. Those of you who are used to HD, this was something filmed in 1963,

  31. and Martin Luther King was part of a leadership team

  32. that called for a march on Washington in 1963

  33. to address the persistent racism and segregation of the United States of America.

  34. And at the end of that famous march on Washington,

  35. he gave his famous I Have a Dream speech.

  36. And at the very center of the I Have a Dream speech

  37. is a quote from the book of Amos,

  38. which is part of the theological center of the book,

  39. and it gives us, in fact, the name for our sermon series.

  40. So we can't play the whole clip.

  41. We're going to play a little bit of the clip,

  42. which quotes from Amos.

  43. So off you go, Andrew.

  44. We cannot turn back.

  45. There are those who are asking the devotees of civil rights,

  46. when will you be satisfied?

  47. We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim

  48. of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality.

  49. We can never be satisfied.

  50. As long as our body is heavy with the fatigue of travel,

  51. cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities.

  52. We cannot be satisfied as long as the Negro's basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one.

  53. We can never be satisfied as long as our children are stripped of their selfhood

  54. and robbed of their dignity by signs stating for whites only.

  55. We cannot be satisfied as long as the Negro in Mississippi cannot vote,

  56. and the Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote.

  57. No, no, we are not satisfied,

  58. and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters

  59. and righteousness like a mighty stream.

  60. Let justice roll down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.

  61. We're not going to look at that text today.

  62. I think it's going to be Daniel in a couple of weeks who's going to exposit that,

  63. but it's at the center of the book

  64. and the center of the theological understanding of the book of Amos.

  65. It's really interesting that in 1963,

  66. when there was still no integration in many parts of the United States,

  67. still segregation,

  68. that in this historic speech in Washington underneath the Lincoln Memorial,

  69. they had the Lincoln Memorial just behind them,

  70. that in calling people to address these evils

  71. and in a sense to have the moral weight and moral certainty

  72. and moral courage to address these evils.

  73. He goes to the book of Amos.

  74. And so, you know, when Nora was reading the book of Amos,

  75. it might have sounded,

  76. where on earth is George going to go with a text like this?

  77. But to understand that this book has this moral weight

  78. that inspired this profound movement of nonviolence in the United States

  79. to try to start to address some historic evils

  80. that have been going on for hundreds of years.

  81. Well, let's look and see if we can have a bit of a glimpse

  82. of this moral weight and moral authority

  83. that can lead to such changes and such courage.

  84. So if you would just read with me, let's look how it begins.

  85. It's Amos.

  86. It's a hard book to find.

  87. It's a short little prophet book towards the end of the Old Testament,

  88. just before the New Testament.

  89. And here's how it begins.

  90. Verse 1.

  91. The words of Amos, who was among the shepherds of Tekoa,

  92. which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah, king of Judah,

  93. in the days of Jeroboam, the son of Joash, king of Israel,

  94. two years before the earthquake.

  95. And over the next few weeks,

  96. we'll talk a little bit about the distinction of Judah and Israel.

  97. I'm not going to say anything about it right now,

  98. or very little about it right now.

  99. Just to let you know that one of the things which is really curious about this text,

  100. I'm not going to say anything about it other than point it out to you.

  101. He sees the words.

  102. I mean, the words are spoken, but he sees them.

  103. Isn't that an odd thing?

  104. I don't know what it means, but I thought I should show you.

  105. Look at that.

  106. The words of Amos, which he saw.

  107. I think that's just cool.

  108. I don't know what else it means.

  109. It's just cool.

  110. And Amos prophesied, when he mentions the two kings,

  111. they were both two kings who had a very, very, very, very long rule.

  112. Sort of imagine Elizabeth, Queen Elizabeth of the North and Queen Elizabeth of the South

  113. with a little bit of an overlap between the two of them.

  114. And so he wrote somewhere between the time 793 B.C.,

  115. in other words, 793 years before the birth of Christ,

  116. and 739 B.C.

  117. And one other thing for you to note just before we go on.

  118. Amos is going to be pronouncing these oracles,

  119. and an oracle is as if God speaks, but he uses someone's mouth.

  120. So it would be as if God used Daniel here to speak an oracle,

  121. it would be God speaking, but he uses Daniel's mouth, Daniel to speak it.

  122. And there's a series of eight oracles, which make up chapter 1 and chapter 2.

  123. Six of them are about the pagan nations outside of Israel,

  124. and two of them are about the northern and southern kingdom of Israel.

  125. And I'm going to look at the six oracles to the pagan nations.

  126. And so Amos tells us that he's saying these things sometime between 793

  127. and sometime between that and 739.

  128. Let's just say for sake of arguments around 750.

  129. One thing for you to remember is in 722,

  130. Israel ceased to exist as a nation.

  131. That sometime in the 720s, in other words,

  132. sometime maybe a decade after Amos prophesied,

  133. the Assyrian empire entered into this area.

  134. All of the nations that are mentioned are completely and utterly defeated militarily,

  135. some of them never to recover,

  136. and some to recover but in a very weakened state.

  137. And the nation of Israel itself is defeated by Assyria.

  138. The ten tribes that are resident there are carried into exile,

  139. and they are lost from history.

  140. They disappear.

  141. So depending on how you date it,

  142. somewhere between 15 and 50 years after Amos speaks these words,

  143. the nations will all fall that he mentions.

  144. So let's read verses 2 to 5.

  145. And he said,

  146. The Lord roars from Zion and utters his voice from Jerusalem.

  147. The pastures of the shepherds mourn,

  148. and the top of Carmel withers.

  149. Thus says the Lord,

  150. For three transgressions of Damascus and for four,

  151. I will not revoke the punishment.

  152. Because they have threshed Gilead with threshing sledges of iron,

  153. so I will send fire upon the house of Hazael,

  154. and it shall devour the strongholds of Ben-Hadad.

  155. I will break the gate bar of Damascus

  156. and cut off the inhabitants from the valley of Avon,

  157. and him who holds the scepter from Beth Eden

  158. and the people of Syria shall go into exile to Kir,

  159. says the Lord.

  160. And just sort of pause here for a second.

  161. And I'm going to spend a little bit of time

  162. just in this first five verses,

  163. or the first couple of verses,

  164. because as you'll see, there's a rhythm throughout all of the six,

  165. in fact, all of the eight oracles,

  166. two of which Daniel will look at with you next Sunday.

  167. But there's this rhythm for three, for four.

  168. I will send fire.

  169. I will devour.

  170. Thus says the Lord.

  171. There's this rhythm.

  172. So let's just sort of begin with this.

  173. And here's the first point,

  174. if you could put it up,

  175. that would be very helpful.

  176. The true, real, living, untamed, nation-judging God roars.

  177. This is the introduction to the whole book.

  178. The whole book.

  179. What's one of the things that can help Martin Luther King stare down

  180. the police in places like Alabama and Mississippi

  181. is he's gripped with the notion

  182. that there is a God who exists

  183. who is bigger than the United States of America.

  184. He is untamed by human institutions.

  185. He is true.

  186. He is real.

  187. He is living.

  188. He is untamed.

  189. He judges every nation,

  190. every human institution,

  191. every social structure.

  192. And this God roars.

  193. At this time, for a lot of Canadians,

  194. the glow of Martin Luther King's speech starts to fade.

  195. Just this past week, as I'm working on the book of Amos,

  196. I overheard that God sent two pairs of people

  197. to sit right beside me to talk.

  198. And in both cases,

  199. in one case it was two men,

  200. and in another case it was two women.

  201. And one person was giving advice to the other.

  202. And their conversation was very Canadian

  203. and very spiritual, not religious.

  204. And I'm not saying this to mock.

  205. I'm just saying it to describe.

  206. And obviously that one person was in some type of trouble

  207. and the other person was giving them advice

  208. that they had to become more spiritual.

  209. They had to know that they had to walk on their own spiritual path.

  210. And that spiritual path meant leaving these other people behind.

  211. And they had to stop being concerned about these other people

  212. because they had to get in touch with their own spiritual nature.

  213. They had to get in touch with their own spiritual power

  214. and their own spiritual value

  215. and walk their own spiritual path.

  216. Even if that means leaving all these other people behind

  217. and just completely ignoring the complaints that they have about them,

  218. they needed to get in touch with their spiritual center,

  219. their spiritual power,

  220. their spiritual path.

  221. And it's very Canadian.

  222. And we breathe that Canadian spiritual cultural air.

  223. We breathe it every day.

  224. We breathe it when we watch TV and we watch Netflix.

  225. We breathe it probably even when sports commentators comment.

  226. We breathe it in the newspapers.

  227. We breathe it when we hear about the decisions of governments.

  228. We breathe it when we go to school.

  229. We breathe it when we go to work in the bureaucracy

  230. and even in many businesses and companies.

  231. It is the spiritual air.

  232. It is the cultural air that we breathe

  233. that people are to get in touch with their spiritual nature,

  234. their spiritual path,

  235. to walk their spiritual path,

  236. to touch their spiritual values.

  237. And it's a very, very comforting type of thing.

  238. And here in a country which that is very common,

  239. if you said that at a particular party,

  240. I mean, some people might be bored.

  241. Some people might roll their eyes,

  242. but nobody would insult you probably.

  243. Maybe Christopher Hitchens,

  244. if he was still alive in there,

  245. he would insult you.

  246. But apart from odd atheists like him,

  247. it would just come with knowing nods.

  248. And then here you come,

  249. what, a kilometer from Parliament Hill,

  250. half a kilometer from the entertainment and bar center

  251. of the city of Ottawa,

  252. half a kilometer from the University of Ottawa.

  253. And we read a text,

  254. and at the heart of that text

  255. is this profound theological claim

  256. that there is a true God.

  257. There is a real God.

  258. There is a God who actually is alive.

  259. And he is completely and utterly untamed

  260. and untameable.

  261. He can never, ever be domesticated

  262. by any human being,

  263. by any institution,

  264. by any nation.

  265. He is completely impossible

  266. to domesticate or tame.

  267. And he's real,

  268. and he's live,

  269. and he's true,

  270. and he judges,

  271. even nations,

  272. even the Supreme Court of Canada,

  273. even the Parliament,

  274. the Senate,

  275. the Premier,

  276. the Mayor,

  277. Apple,

  278. Google,

  279. GM,

  280. he judges.

  281. and he roars.

  282. And it is very un-Canadian.

  283. Let me tell you one other thing about this.

  284. I'm not going to argue for it, by the way.

  285. I'm just going to give you a bit of an analogy about it.

  286. And I'm going to say,

  287. at the end of the day,

  288. I mean, for many Canadians,

  289. they would just say,

  290. well, that's one of the reasons

  291. I don't read the Bible.

  292. Thank you very much,

  293. and off you go.

  294. But,

  295. I mean,

  296. the argument for why this is true

  297. is partially the fact that

  298. the prophecies are fulfilled.

  299. At the end of the day,

  300. I would have to talk about

  301. the overall narrative of the Bible,

  302. the wisdom,

  303. and the insight of the Bible.

  304. I would maybe have to talk a little bit

  305. about why it is

  306. that the type of spiritual,

  307. not religious talk

  308. that I overheard in Starbucks

  309. could not lead you

  310. to stare down troopers

  311. in Alabama and Mississippi

  312. and change

  313. systemic,

  314. century-old evil.

  315. It has no power

  316. to do that.

  317. Never has

  318. and never will.

  319. At the end of the day,

  320. I'd have to talk about

  321. arguments for God

  322. and finally,

  323. ultimately,

  324. the fact of Jesus

  325. and his death

  326. and resurrection.

  327. But let me tell you this.

  328. Before I was married

  329. to Louise,

  330. I imagined

  331. what my perfect girlfriend

  332. and wife would be like.

  333. and my imaginary

  334. perfect girlfriend

  335. never told me

  336. that I was doing something wrong,

  337. never commented

  338. negatively

  339. about how I was dressed,

  340. how I cut my hair,

  341. how I spent my time,

  342. how I should spend my time,

  343. how I should speak to her.

  344. My imaginary ideal girlfriend

  345. and wife

  346. never talked like that.

  347. And then I met Louise.

  348. And let me tell you,

  349. her account of the distance

  350. between whatever her imaginary

  351. husband and me,

  352. that would be vastly different.

  353. I have way more to repent of

  354. than she does.

  355. But don't you think

  356. that much of the spiritual,

  357. not religious,

  358. contemporary talk

  359. about religion,

  360. spirituality in Canada

  361. is exactly like

  362. imaginary girlfriends

  363. and boyfriends.

  364. Real people

  365. are annoyingly angular

  366. until you learn

  367. to love them

  368. and you have to love them

  369. in their angularity.

  370. In fact,

  371. what I'm going to suggest

  372. is the God

  373. who's described in the Bible

  374. is vastly more likely

  375. to be real

  376. than the way we talk

  377. about spirituality

  378. and religion in Canada

  379. and is well worth

  380. our considered opinion.

  381. Especially after a clip

  382. like that

  383. and Martin Luther King.

  384. I believe the Bible is true.

  385. And I believe that

  386. the God who really does exist,

  387. who's revealed

  388. in the words of Scripture

  389. and is ultimately revealed

  390. most perfectly in Jesus

  391. and his death upon the cross

  392. and mighty resurrection,

  393. that he is the real

  394. and true God.

  395. The true,

  396. real,

  397. living,

  398. untamed,

  399. nation,

  400. judging God

  401. that roars.

  402. And I've had several people

  403. over this week

  404. tell me that they've tried

  405. to study the book of Amos

  406. and it just seems

  407. to be the same week in

  408. and week out

  409. and so they never finished it.

  410. And it might very well be

  411. that we will come

  412. to the conclusion

  413. that the book of Amos

  414. keeps banging

  415. the same note

  416. like a drum.

  417. But I want to suggest

  418. to you

  419. that contemporary Canadians

  420. need to spend

  421. ten weeks

  422. meditating upon the fact

  423. that the God

  424. that really does exist

  425. is true

  426. and living

  427. and real

  428. and untamed

  429. and nation-judging.

  430. And that if all we do

  431. is hear that

  432. for ten consecutive weeks

  433. it is probably

  434. very important

  435. for our souls.

  436. And probably

  437. very important

  438. for our nation.

  439. And if you get

  440. nothing else out of it,

  441. if that's all you get

  442. and you are confronted

  443. to meditate upon that,

  444. then God has done

  445. a mighty thing

  446. in our midst.

  447. Now I want to tell,

  448. I don't know if there's

  449. any people

  450. who are here today

  451. who are not a follower

  452. of Jesus

  453. and maybe have been

  454. dragged here

  455. because of a family member

  456. or maybe you're here

  457. because you're on a search.

  458. I want to tell you

  459. a secret about Christians

  460. in Canada.

  461. I want to tell you

  462. a secret

  463. about most of

  464. your Christian friends.

  465. most of your Christian

  466. friends suffer

  467. under the belief

  468. that God is small

  469. and people are big.

  470. God is small

  471. and their boss is big.

  472. God is small

  473. and their money is big.

  474. God is small

  475. and the Supreme Court

  476. of Canada is big.

  477. God is small

  478. and Hollywood is big.

  479. And most of your

  480. Christian friends

  481. suffer

  482. from that basic belief.

  483. And the book of Amos here

  484. is going to challenge that.

  485. Listen to it again.

  486. The Lord roars from Zion

  487. and utters his voice

  488. from Jerusalem.

  489. The pastures

  490. of the shepherds

  491. mourn

  492. and the top

  493. of Carmel withers.

  494. This is an image

  495. of the,

  496. it's an image

  497. of north to south

  498. and it's an image,

  499. it's as if I in Canada

  500. said from the hunters

  501. in the high Arctic

  502. to the penthouses

  503. on Bay Street.

  504. from the street people

  505. in Victoria

  506. to the richest people

  507. in Bridal Path

  508. area of Toronto.

  509. And he uses an image

  510. of high to low as well.

  511. He uses the image

  512. of from the river valleys

  513. to the highest places

  514. on the highest tree line

  515. in the mountains.

  516. The Lord roars from Zion

  517. and utters his voice

  518. from Jerusalem.

  519. The pastures

  520. of the shepherds

  521. mourn

  522. and the top

  523. of Carmel withers.

  524. Thus says the Lord

  525. for three transgressions

  526. of Damascus

  527. and for four

  528. I will not revoke

  529. the punishment

  530. because they have

  531. threshed Gilead

  532. with threshing

  533. sledges of iron.

  534. So I will send,

  535. I will send fire

  536. upon the house

  537. of Hazael

  538. and it shall devour

  539. the strongholds

  540. of Ben-Hadad.

  541. I will break

  542. the gate bar

  543. of Damascus

  544. and cut off

  545. the inhabitants

  546. from the valley

  547. of Avon

  548. and him

  549. who holds

  550. the scepter

  551. sign of ruling

  552. from Beth Eden

  553. and the people

  554. of Syria

  555. shall go into exile

  556. to Kir

  557. says the Lord.

  558. Here's the next point.

  559. If you could put it up,

  560. Andrew,

  561. that would be great.

  562. The Lord roars.

  563. I live as if Canada

  564. and its institutions

  565. are big

  566. and God is small.

  567. Pray for me.

  568. Pray for each other.

  569. It is a persistent,

  570. pervasive illness

  571. for North American Christians.

  572. Our God is too small

  573. and people and problems

  574. are too big.

  575. We live as if

  576. the only option before us

  577. is to tower ourselves

  578. or to cower under others.

  579. And once we are gripped

  580. with the idea

  581. that the living,

  582. true,

  583. real,

  584. untamed nation

  585. judging God roars,

  586. we can begin

  587. to understand

  588. that there is

  589. a completely different option

  590. and that is

  591. to be the servant

  592. of the Most High King.

  593. Do you put up

  594. the next point?

  595. Really,

  596. in some ways,

  597. the whole part

  598. of the sermon

  599. is to try to bring us

  600. to these first two points

  601. and prayers

  602. that are going to

  603. follow from them.

  604. But we need to go

  605. through the text

  606. because there's really

  607. something very important

  608. in here.

  609. Dear Lord,

  610. please make me

  611. a disciple of Jesus,

  612. gripped by the gospel,

  613. growing in a humble,

  614. trusting,

  615. knowing that you are big

  616. and everything human

  617. is small

  618. or everything created

  619. is small.

  620. That is a prayer

  621. for the rest of your life.

  622. It's a prayer

  623. to pray every day.

  624. And if you don't have time

  625. to write these down,

  626. they're always on the webpage

  627. within a day or two

  628. if you want to write them down

  629. and use them

  630. in your prayer life.

  631. But some people might say,

  632. isn't this passage

  633. offensive?

  634. Here we have

  635. a Jewish guy

  636. from Judah,

  637. southern kingdom,

  638. and he's judging

  639. other people groups

  640. by Jewish standards.

  641. Like,

  642. what gives him

  643. the right

  644. to judge Edomites

  645. as to how they should live?

  646. What gives him

  647. the right

  648. to talk to Damascus?

  649. They have their own values.

  650. Like,

  651. isn't this a multicultural world?

  652. Shouldn't we value tolerance?

  653. Aren't morals

  654. just relative?

  655. How dare...

  656. Okay, George,

  657. you sort of caught us up

  658. with some of your rhetoric,

  659. but how dare there be

  660. a guy from Judah

  661. imposing Jewish standards

  662. on these six

  663. surrounding pagan nations?

  664. They have their own gods.

  665. They have their own

  666. metanarrative.

  667. They have their own story.

  668. And, George,

  669. all the smartest

  670. and brightest people

  671. in Canada

  672. know that morals

  673. are relative,

  674. that there's nothing

  675. inherently absolute.

  676. Like, George,

  677. this is a deeply

  678. offensive text

  679. to Canada.

  680. Well,

  681. all I'd like to say is,

  682. do you still want

  683. to maintain that

  684. when you see the sins

  685. that Amos accuses

  686. the six nations of?

  687. Like,

  688. let's look here again

  689. at verse 3.

  690. Thus says the Lord,

  691. for three transgressions

  692. of Damascus

  693. and for four,

  694. I will not revoke

  695. the punishment.

  696. Why?

  697. Because they have

  698. threshed Gilead

  699. with threshing

  700. sledges of iron.

  701. It's an image

  702. that they use

  703. an iron device

  704. to take an entire

  705. people group

  706. and go over them

  707. and over them

  708. and over them

  709. and over them

  710. until they are

  711. completely,

  712. utterly,

  713. completely destroyed.

  714. He's condemning

  715. genocide.

  716. You're fine with that?

  717. In smug Canada?

  718. You're fine with genocide?

  719. You have nothing to say

  720. about what goes on

  721. about that?

  722. Is genocide

  723. just a figment

  724. of the imagination,

  725. a moral oddity

  726. about some guy

  727. from the southern

  728. kingdom of Judah?

  729. He condemns

  730. the nation

  731. for genocide.

  732. Here's the third point.

  733. Could you put it up,

  734. Andrew, please?

  735. The Lord roars.

  736. There are some things

  737. that human beings

  738. cannot

  739. not know.

  740. Despite all of the

  741. glib talk

  742. of a certain form

  743. of multiculturalism

  744. and a glib talk

  745. of a certain form

  746. of tolerance

  747. and the glib talk

  748. of certain forms

  749. of moral relativism,

  750. the Bible here

  751. is going to maintain

  752. and all the way

  753. through the book

  754. of Amos

  755. that there are

  756. some truths,

  757. some things

  758. that human beings

  759. cannot

  760. not know.

  761. There is never

  762. a justification

  763. for a complete

  764. annihilation

  765. of a people group.

  766. One of the things

  767. that people wonder

  768. about is the Bible

  769. on slavery.

  770. Do you know

  771. that the next

  772. two condemnations

  773. are about slavery?

  774. In fact,

  775. it's a condemnation

  776. of slavery

  777. in a remarkably

  778. complete way.

  779. It's not immediately

  780. obvious in the English,

  781. but if you look

  782. at it very carefully,

  783. it's even more obvious

  784. in the Hebrew,

  785. but even in the English,

  786. if you look at it

  787. very carefully,

  788. you'll see

  789. that the next thing

  790. that is condemned

  791. is two aspects

  792. of the institution

  793. of slavery

  794. and is completely

  795. and utterly condemned.

  796. Is slavery all right?

  797. Let's read it.

  798. Verses 6 to 8.

  799. For thus says the Lord

  800. for three transgressions

  801. of Gaza

  802. and for four,

  803. this is a condemnation

  804. of the Philistine people.

  805. For three transgressions

  806. of Gaza

  807. and for four,

  808. I will not revoke

  809. the punishment

  810. because they carried

  811. into exile

  812. a whole people

  813. to deliver them

  814. up to Edom.

  815. They were the ones

  816. who went and captured

  817. a whole people

  818. for the purpose

  819. of making them slaves

  820. and took them

  821. to the slave market

  822. where they could be

  823. sold.

  824. This is condemned

  825. by Amos

  826. in a cult,

  827. in a world

  828. that viewed slavery

  829. as normal.

  830. The Bible condemns it

  831. 750 years

  832. before the birth

  833. of Jesus,

  834. before Plato,

  835. before Aristotle,

  836. before Socrates.

  837. So I will send

  838. a fire upon

  839. the walls of Gaza

  840. and it shall devour

  841. her strongholds.

  842. I will cut off

  843. the inhabitants

  844. from Ashdod

  845. and him who holds

  846. the scepter

  847. from Ashkelon.

  848. I will turn my hand

  849. against Ekron

  850. and the remnant

  851. of the Philistine

  852. shall perish,

  853. says the Lord God.

  854. And then he captures

  855. the next part.

  856. Some people might say,

  857. well, I'm just an ordinary

  858. businessman.

  859. I'm just trying

  860. to make a living.

  861. It's not my fault

  862. that they come

  863. and dump all these

  864. slaves with me.

  865. I'm just trying

  866. to provide a market.

  867. I'm just trying

  868. to provide a service.

  869. It's just business.

  870. Business is neutral.

  871. Excuse me.

  872. Before we read

  873. the next part,

  874. could you put up

  875. the next point,

  876. Andrew?

  877. The Lord roars.

  878. There is a real

  879. moral order

  880. that despite being

  881. imperfectly known,

  882. forgotten,

  883. twisted,

  884. and repressed,

  885. it is still present

  886. enough for God

  887. to judge us.

  888. Listen to verses

  889. 9 and 10.

  890. Thus says the Lord,

  891. for three transgressions

  892. of Tyre and for four,

  893. I will not revoke

  894. the punishment

  895. because they delivered

  896. up a whole people

  897. to Edom

  898. and did not remember

  899. the covenant

  900. of brotherhood.

  901. So I will send

  902. a fire upon

  903. the wall of Tyre

  904. and it shall devour

  905. her strongholds.

  906. And when you put

  907. the parts together,

  908. the Syrians

  909. capture people

  910. to make them slaves.

  911. They don't know

  912. how to sell them.

  913. They sell them

  914. through Edom.

  915. Edom sells them

  916. as slaves.

  917. The Lord roars.

  918. There is a real

  919. moral order

  920. that despite being

  921. imperfectly known,

  922. forgotten,

  923. parts of it,

  924. parts of it twisted,

  925. parts of it repressed,

  926. it is still present

  927. enough for God

  928. to judge us.

  929. Imagine for a second

  930. that they were able

  931. to take a human being,

  932. like in a test tube,

  933. they were able

  934. to develop something

  935. like DNA

  936. and they were able

  937. to make a human being

  938. in a machine

  939. and, you know,

  940. whatever it is,

  941. a little while later

  942. out pops this

  943. fully functioning

  944. human being.

  945. But then you actually

  946. spend time

  947. with a human being

  948. and you discover

  949. that the human being

  950. has no conscience

  951. at all.

  952. Like, by no conscience

  953. I mean it's like a snake.

  954. Snakes have no conscience,

  955. it's just an animal.

  956. When it's hungry,

  957. it hunts and eats.

  958. After it's eaten,

  959. it stops.

  960. If somebody threatens it,

  961. it fights back,

  962. otherwise it just sleeps.

  963. Would we say,

  964. even if it had

  965. everything about us

  966. as human beings,

  967. it looked like

  968. a human being

  969. and everything like that

  970. is completely

  971. and it's real,

  972. if you cut it,

  973. it's not like a machine,

  974. like it's real.

  975. But would you say

  976. that something

  977. that looks like

  978. a human being

  979. manufactured out

  980. of a test tube

  981. that had no conscience

  982. was human?

  983. And if you think

  984. about it for a second,

  985. one of the problems

  986. with the Turing test

  987. about machines

  988. having consciousness

  989. is there's,

  990. I believe,

  991. no conscience aspect of it.

  992. Can there be

  993. a human mind

  994. without conscience?

  995. Would you call

  996. a mind

  997. without conscience

  998. a human mind?

  999. The Bible says

  1000. that having a conscience

1001. is part of the image

  1002. of God in us.

  1003. And even though

  1004. our consciences

  1005. can be repressed

1006. and parts of it repressed

1007. and parts of it twisted

  1008. and parts of it

  1009. inflamed unnaturally

  1010. and parts of it

  1011. just all messed up,

  1012. that every human being,

  1013. this is the message

  1014. of Romans 1

  1015. and Romans 2,

  1016. that every human being

  1017. retains enough

  1018. of a conscience

  1019. that God in complete

  1020. and utter justice

  1021. can judge us.

  1022. In fact,

  1023. the horrible thing

  1024. on one hand

  1025. from the book

  1026. of Romans chapter 2

    Romans 2 chapter mention

  1027. is that Paul maintains

  1028. that even if

  1029. all God did

1030. was take your moral order,

  1031. no matter how twisted

  1032. or whatever it is

  1033. and no matter

  1034. how much repressed,

  1035. the moral order

  1036. that you're conscious of

  1037. and that you use

  1038. in your own life,

1039. and if he used that

  1040. to judge you,

  1041. you would fail

1042. and he would be right

  1043. in judging you.

  1044. You know,

  1045. to our glib

  1046. Canadians

  1047. who are enticed

  1048. by spiritual,

  1049. not religious

  1050. and all things

  1051. being relative,

  1052. what about racism?

  1053. The hatred

  1054. of any people group,

  1055. not just racism,

  1056. but hating men

  1057. because they're men

  1058. or women

  1059. because they're women

  1060. or a particular

  1061. ethnic group

  1062. because they're ethnic.

  1063. Isn't that a human problem

  1064. and isn't it viewed

  1065. not just as ethnocentrism

  1066. but as something fundamental

  1067. that we should reject?

  1068. But Amos rejects it.

  1069. In fact,

  1070. I would suggest

  1071. that it's only ultimately

  1072. in the biblical worldview

  1073. that you can have

  1074. a true rejection

  1075. of racism

  1076. because racism,

  1077. you know,

  1078. if you have,

  1079. in our modern narrative,

  1080. our modern story,

  1081. you know,

  1082. that first everything,

  1083. you know,

  1084. whatever the initial bit

  1085. of life came together

  1086. completely and utterly

  1087. by chance

  1088. and then natural selection

  1089. means that eventually

  1090. we go from having

  1091. apes and gorillas

  1092. to human beings,

  1093. therefore don't be prejudiced.

  1094. That doesn't follow.

  1095. That's incoherent.

  1096. It makes absolutely

  1097. no sense.

  1098. Our culture's hatred

  1099. of racism

  1100. is an echo

  1101. of an echo

  1102. of an echo

  1103. of an echo

  1104. of the story

  1105. of the Bible

  1106. and the teaching

  1107. of books like Amos

  1108. that teaches

1109. there is but one God

  1110. who's created

  1111. all human beings

  1112. and all human beings

  1113. equally bear

  1114. the image of God

  1115. and all human beings

  1116. equally bearing

  1117. the image of God

  1118. have a conscience,

  1119. a reflection

  1120. of the moral order

  1121. even if imperfectly known

  1122. after the fall.

  1123. And there is

  1124. but one God

  1125. and but one

  1126. created human race

  1127. made male

  1128. and female,

  1129. two genders,

  1130. not 70.

  1131. And the book

  1132. of Amos

  1133. is going to condemn

  1134. racism at its heart.

  1135. Read along with me

  1136. here in verses 11 and 12.

  1137. Thus says the Lord,

  1138. for three transgressions

  1139. of Edom

  1140. and for four

  1141. I will not revoke

  1142. the punishment

  1143. because he pursued

  1144. his brother

  1145. with the sword

  1146. and cast off

  1147. all pity

  1148. and his anger

  1149. tore perpetually

  1150. and he kept

  1151. his wrath forever.

  1152. So I will send

  1153. a fire upon Timan

  1154. and it shall devour

  1155. the strongholds

  1156. of Basra.

  1157. I mean there's

  1158. not only here

  1159. a strong condemnation

  1160. of anger

  1161. but isn't that

  1162. the very heart

  1163. of racism?

  1164. Like even just

  1165. within this past

  1166. week or two

  1167. the president

  1168. the head

  1169. of the Palestine

  1170. group I think

  1171. centered in Gaza

  1172. continuing to pass

  1173. on this

  1174. libelous assault

  1175. on Jewish people

  1176. of poisoning wells.

  1177. a lie of hatred

  1178. against the Jewish

  1179. people that has

  1180. gone on for

  1181. centuries and centuries

  1182. and is used

  1183. to fuel

  1184. and inflame

  1185. hatred.

  1186. And the Bible

  1187. here condemns

  1188. all hatred

  1189. of people groups

  1190. as people groups.

  1191. All of our social

  1192. and other means

  1193. by which

  1194. we nourish

  1195. a hatred

  1196. of entire

  1197. people groups.

  1198. we feed it

  1199. we justify it

  1200. we rationalize it

  1201. we inflame it

  1202. and the Bible

  1203. condemns it.

  1204. The Bible

  1205. condemns it.

  1206. The Lord roars

1207. if you could put up

  1208. the next point

  1209. Andrew

  1210. the Lord roars

  1211. he is holy

  1212. good

  1213. and wholly

  1214. opposed

  1215. to evil.

  1216. The Lord roars

  1217. he is holy

  1218. he is good

  1219. and he is wholly

  1220. opposed

  1221. to evil.

  1222. I have to confess

  1223. that there is a

  1224. on the Christian

  1225. radio show

  1226. here in Ottawa

  1227. on Sunday

  1228. afternoons

  1229. they play the

  1230. same one hour

  1231. show over

  1232. and over again

  1233. I think from

  1234. about one o'clock

  1235. till seven

  1236. and I

  1237. every time I

  1238. listen to it

  1239. for longer

  1240. than a couple

  1241. of minutes

  1242. I get so angry

  1243. I have to spend

  1244. time in repentance

  1245. and I know

  1246. that for some

  1247. people this may

  1248. be very very

  1249. helpful

  1250. I hear true

  1251. confessions

  1252. John Maxwell

  1253. who is one of

  1254. these power

  1255. of positive

  1256. thinking

  1257. I have a very

  1258. soft spot

  1259. in my heart

  1260. for John Maxwell

  1261. his writings

  1262. at a certain

  1263. point in time

  1264. in my life

  1265. were tremendously

  1266. tremendously

  1267. tremendously

  1268. helpful

  1269. but I think

  1270. even John Maxwell

  1271. would acknowledge

  1272. if you only read

  1273. John Maxwell

  1274. you are going to

  1275. starve yourself

  1276. you will poison

  1277. yourself

  1278. and encouragement

  1279. constant encouragement

  1280. without any

  1281. discussion

  1282. of the holiness

  1283. of God

  1284. and any

  1285. call to

  1286. repentance

  1287. it might be

  1288. very good

  1289. for a very

  1290. brief season

  1291. but it's

  1292. spiritually

  1293. profoundly

  1294. dangerous

  1295. we live

  1296. in a culture

  1297. where not all

  1298. praise songs

  1299. are like this

  1300. and I'm not

  1301. dumping on

  1302. praise songs

  1303. I love

  1304. praise songs

  1305. we go a whole

  1306. other thing

  1307. you know the

  1308. favorite song

  1309. of this church

  1310. you know before

  1311. I came here

  1312. was the words

  1313. of that poem

  1314. what is it

  1315. Andrew

  1316. and did

  1317. in England's

  1318. that you know

  1319. England's fields

  1320. green

  1321. did Jesus

  1322. really walk

  1323. no

  1324. he didn't

  1325. stop singing

  1326. the song

  1327. he didn't

  1328. walk around

  1329. England's

  1330. green and

  1331. verdant fields

  1332. England isn't

  1333. Israel

  1334. get over it

  1335. it's in the

  1336. hymn book

  1337. in the

  1338. Anglican

  1339. hymn book

  1340. well beloved

  1341. but there is a

  1342. common problem

  1343. of Jesus is my

  1344. girlfriend songs

  1345. you can't sing

  1346. Jesus is my

  1347. girlfriend songs

  1348. if it never

  1349. means you have

  1350. to wrestle with

  1351. the fact

  1352. that the God

  1353. who really does

  1354. exist is untamed

  1355. nation judging

  1356. he is holy

  1357. he is holy

  1358. good

  1359. and he is

  1360. holy

  1361. opposed

  1362. to evil

  1363. let's read

  1364. verses 13

  1365. to 15

  1366. we're almost

  1367. coming to

  1368. an end

  1369. of the text

  1370. thus says

  1371. the Lord

  1372. for three

  1373. transgressions

  1374. of the

  1375. Ammonites

  1376. and for four

  1377. I will not

  1378. revoke the

  1379. punishment

  1380. because they

  1381. have ripped

  1382. open pregnant

  1383. women in

  1384. Gilead

  1385. that they

  1386. might enlarge

  1387. their

  1388. border

  1389. so I

  1390. will

  1391. kindle

  1392. a fire

  1393. in the

  1394. wall

  1395. of

  1396. Rabah

  1397. and it

  1398. shall

  1399. devour

  1400. her

  1401. strongholds

  1402. with shouting

  1403. in the

  1404. day of

  1405. battle

  1406. and with

  1407. a tempest

  1408. in the

  1409. day of

  1410. the

  1411. whirlwind

  1412. and their

  1413. king

  1414. shall go

  1415. into exile

  1416. he and his

  1417. princes

  1418. together

  1419. says the

  1420. Lord

  1421. because they

  1422. ripped open

  1423. pregnant women

  1424. in Gilead

  1425. that they

  1426. might enlarge

  1427. their border

  1428. enter the

  1429. next point

  1430. the Lord

  1431. roars

  1432. he is

  1433. judging

  1434. every

  1435. human

  1436. being

  1437. institution

  1438. and social

  1439. structure

  1440. he is

  1441. judging

  1442. every

  1443. human

  1444. being

  1445. institution

  1446. and social

  1447. structure

  1448. I know

  1449. a woman

  1450. who had

  1451. an abortion

  1452. so she

  1453. would look

  1454. good in her

  1455. wedding dress

  1456. not making

  1457. it up

  1458. so she had

  1459. the abortion

  1460. she wanted

  1461. to look

  1462. good in her

  1463. wedding dress

  1464. on her

  1465. wedding

  1466. day

  1467. human

  1468. beings

  1469. regularly

  1470. attack the

  1471. weakest

  1472. and the

  1473. vulnerable

  1474. because of

  1475. their

  1476. ambitions

  1477. whether it's

  1478. an ambition

  1479. to take

  1480. more territory

  1481. or to look

  1482. good in a

  1483. bikini

  1484. or ambitions

  1485. because as a

  1486. guy you want

  1487. to travel and

  1488. you want to

  1489. do things

  1490. you don't

  1491. want to have

  1492. to be

  1493. encumbered

  1494. by a

  1495. girlfriend

  1496. whom you

  1497. made

  1498. pregnant

  1499. the first

  1500. time I ever

  1501. spoke on

  1502. Parliament Hill

  1503. at the

  1504. Parliament Hill

  1505. Christian Fellowship

  1506. I thought to

  1507. myself

  1508. I've seen

  1509. many people

  1510. come and go

  1511. in places

  1512. like this

  1513. and what

  1514. they do

  1515. is they

  1516. try to

  1517. preach a

  1518. sermon

  1519. that people

  1520. will like

  1521. so they

  1522. get invited

  1523. back

  1524. and the

  1525. irony is

  1526. that they

  1527. usually

  1528. don't get

  1529. invited

  1530. back

  1531. so I

  1532. prayed about

  1533. it and

  1534. I thought

  1535. I will

  1536. preach

  1537. so that

  1538. if I only

  1539. get one

  1540. shot on

  1541. Parliament Hill

  1542. and I

  1543. never get

  1544. invited

  1545. back

  1546. and so I

  1547. preached on

  1548. the fact

  1549. that we

  1550. have to

  1551. fear

  1552. God

  1553. and that

  1554. on Parliament Hill

  1555. you have to

  1556. understand

  1557. that you're

  1558. under judgment

  1559. that God

  1560. will judge

  1561. you

  1562. funnily enough

  1563. they've invited

  1564. me back

  1565. now for

  1566. 19 years

  1567. go figure

  1568. but that

  1569. wasn't actually

  1570. my plan

  1571. my plan

  1572. was that I

  1573. might only

  1574. get one

  1575. shot

  1576. and so I

  1577. was going

  1578. to give

  1579. it to

  1580. them

  1581. because it

  1582. would be

  1583. not because

  1584. I was going

  1585. to give

  1586. it to

  1587. them

  1588. because

  1589. you know

  1590. how

  1591. would it

  1592. be

  1593. if at

  1594. the

  1595. judgment

  1596. seat

  1597. God

  1598. said to

  1599. me

  1600. George

  1601. you had

  1602. a chance

  1603. to warn

  1604. those guys

  1605. because you

  1606. wanted them

  1607. to like

  1608. you

  1609. because

  1610. you're

  1611. a people

  1612. pleaser

  1613. and even

  1614. now I

  1615. worried about

  1616. whether I

  1617. should make

  1618. a reference

  1619. to abortion

  1620. in case

  1621. it offends

  1622. people

  1623. I confess

  1624. I am

  1625. very

  1626. very

  1627. very

  1628. very

  1629. very

  1630. deeply

  1631. Canadian

  1632. but the

  1633. text here

  1634. speaks very

  1635. clearly

  1636. to political

  1637. ambition

  1638. economic

  1639. ambition

  1640. and personal

  1641. ambition

  1642. and the

  1643. way we

  1644. will

  1645. victimize

  1646. the

  1647. weakest

  1648. the

  1649. great

  1650. worry

  1651. amongst

  1652. many

  1653. of the

  1654. law

  1655. that's

  1656. now

  1657. in

  1658. Canada

  1659. that

  1660. allows

  1661. doctors

  1662. to

  1663. kill

  1664. people

  1665. is

  1666. what

  1667. happens

  1668. if in

  1669. 20

  1670. years

  1671. I'm

  1672. fading

  1673. and my

  1674. kids would

  1675. like to

  1676. go on

  1677. a cruise

  1678. and it

  1679. would be

  1680. a lot

  1681. easier

  1682. if I

  1683. died

  1684. before

  1685. they

  1686. went

  1687. and if

  1688. you think

  1689. this is

  1690. completely

  1691. obscene

  1692. or completely

  1693. unrealistic

  1694. just read

  1695. what's

  1696. gone on

  1697. in the

  1698. Netherlands

  1699. and in

  1700. Belgium

  1701. the

  1702. weakest

  1703. get in

  1704. the way

  1705. of our

  1706. ambition

  1707. some of

  1708. you are

  1709. saying

  1710. George

  1711. this has

  1712. been too

  1713. much

  1714. just the

  1715. one

  1716. final

  1717. text

  1718. just so

  1719. we can

  1720. and then

  1721. we'll

  1722. start to

  1723. wrap it

  1724. up in

  1725. a very

  1726. important

  1727. way

  1728. you know

  1729. in our

  1730. warfare

  1731. nobody

  1732. in our

  1733. modern

  1734. world

  1735. I think

  1736. in our

  1737. warfare

  1738. thinks

  1739. that we

  1740. can send

  1741. people to

  1742. hell

  1743. by defeating

  1744. them

  1745. but in

  1746. the ancient

  1747. world

  1748. they thought

  1749. that

  1750. and that's

  1751. at the

  1752. heart

  1753. one aspect

  1754. of the

  1755. heart

  1756. of this

  1757. final

  1758. condemnation

  1759. not that

  1760. they're able

  1761. to do

  1762. it

  1763. but they

  1764. thought

  1765. they

  1766. could

  1767. do

  1768. it

  1769. and

  1770. because

  1771. they

  1772. thought

  1773. they

  1774. could

  1775. do

  1776. it

  1777. they

  1778. did

  1779. it

  1780. look

  1781. at

  1782. chapter

  1783. 2

  1784. verses

  1785. 1

  1786. to 3

  1787. thus

  1788. says

  1789. they

  1790. believed

  1791. in that

  1792. particular

  1793. culture

  1794. that

  1795. if you

  1796. were to

  1797. completely

  1798. annihilate

  1799. the body

  1800. in such

  1801. a way

  1802. it would

  1803. mean

  1804. that

  1805. his

  1806. existence

  1807. in the

  1808. afterlife

  1809. became

  1810. fraught

  1811. became

  1812. endangered

  1813. that in

  1814. a sense

  1815. he could

  1816. wander

  1817. and be

  1818. he would

  1819. not have

  1820. a good

  1821. death

  1822. he would

  1823. dwell

  1824. in a

  1825. terrible

  1826. place

  1827. after

  1828. death

  1829. and it

  1830. also

  1831. had

  1832. the

  1833. ability

  1834. of

  1835. destroying

  1836. the

  1837. traditions

  1838. of the

  1839. country

  1840. so it

  1841. both

  1842. destroys

  1843. their

  1844. past

  1845. and destroys

  1846. the future

  1847. and in a

  1848. sense

  1849. by doing

  1850. it to

  1851. the king

  1852. who's

  1853. understood

  1854. to be

  1855. a

  1856. representative

  1857. of the

  1858. whole

  1859. people

  1860. in some

  1861. ways

  1862. they're

  1863. saying

  1864. we are

  1865. going to

  1866. cast all

  1867. of you

  1868. as a

  1869. nation

  1870. we're not

  1871. only going to

  1872. defeat you

  1873. militarily

  1874. we're going to

  1875. send you to

  1876. hell

  1877. and it's

  1878. condemned here

  1879. in the

  1880. Bible

  1881. the Lord

  1882. roars

  1883. enter the

  1884. final one

  1885. the Lord

  1886. roars

  1887. in mercy

  1888. this might not

  1889. be originally

  1890. mainly obvious

  1891. the Lord

  1892. roars in

  1893. mercy

  1894. you know

  1895. the thing

  1896. about this

  1897. text

  1898. is this

  1899. text is

  1900. written

  1901. somewhere

  1902. between

  1903. 15

  1904. to 30

  1905. years

  1906. before

  1907. Assyria

  1908. invades

  1909. these

  1910. nations

  1911. and these

  1912. nations

  1913. are

  1914. destroyed

  1915. it's

  1916. the

  1917. complete

  1918. opposite

  1919. of a

  1920. terrorist

  1921. attack

  1922. I was

  1923. on

  1924. Thursday

  1925. I was

  1926. going to

  1927. have

  1928. lunch

  1929. with

  1930. somebody

  1931. in the

  1932. church

  1933. and so

  1934. I was

  1935. walking

  1936. on

  1937. Laurier

  1938. bridge

  1939. right by

  1940. the

  1941. D&D

  1942. and virtually

  1943. every time

  1944. I walk

  1945. by D&D

  1946. I think

  1947. to myself

  1948. is this

  1949. the day

  1950. that a

  1951. terrorist

  1952. will set

  1953. off a

  1954. bomb

  1955. at D&D

  1956. headquarters

  1957. while I'm

  1958. walking

  1959. by

  1960. I know

  1961. I have a

  1962. very odd

  1963. imagination

  1964. but I

  1965. think about

  1966. that

  1967. and you

  1968. know the

  1969. way terrorists

  1970. work is

  1971. the bomb

  1972. goes off

  1973. and then

  1974. they roar

  1975. the Lord

  1976. roars

  1977. 10

  1978. 15

  1979. 20

  1980. 30

  1981. years

  1982. later

  1983. the

  1984. judgment

  1985. comes

  1986. he roars

  1987. so we

  1988. can repent

  1989. in fact

  1990. even within

  1991. this text

  1992. you might

  1993. notice that

  1994. there's

  1995. something

  1996. that seems

  1997. to mean

  1998. that there's

  1999. have no

  2000. mercy

  2001. for some

  2002. of you

  2003. maybe

  2004. who've

  2005. had an

  2006. abortion

  2007. and I've

  2008. made you

  2009. feel very

  2010. guilty

  2011. and you

  2012. think to

  2013. yourself

  2014. George

  2015. this is

  2016. very hard

  2017. I can't

  2018. undo

  2019. an abortion

  2020. I can't

  2021. undo

  2022. the fact

  2023. that I

  2024. encouraged

  2025. a person

  2026. to have

  2027. an abortion

  2028. or that I

  2029. drove them

  2030. I can't

  2031. undo

  2032. any of those

  2033. types of

  2034. things

  2035. and it's

  2036. even made

  2037. worse in

  2038. the text

  2039. because what

  2040. does it say

  2041. time after

  2042. time

  2043. every one

  2044. of these

  2045. places

  2046. I will

  2047. not

  2048. revoke

  2049. I will

  2050. not

  2051. revoke

  2052. I will

  2053. not

  2054. revoke

  2055. I will

  2056. not

  2057. revoke

  2058. I will

  2059. not

  2060. revoke

  2061. it says

  2062. it time

  2063. and time

  2064. and time

  2065. again

  2066. I will

  2067. not

  2068. revoke

  2069. the punishment

  2070. I will

  2071. not

  2072. revoke

  2073. the punishment

  2074. I will

  2075. not

  2076. revoke

  2077. the punishment

  2078. how could

  2079. God

  2080. revoke

  2081. punishment

  2082. for such

  2083. evil

  2084. and still

  2085. be just

  2086. see one

  2087. of the

  2088. things we

  2089. have to

  2090. understand

  2091. about this

  2092. text of

  2093. the Bible

  2094. is that it

  2095. all comes

  2096. before the

  2097. cross

  2098. and what

  2099. the Old

  2100. Testament is

  2101. doing is

  2102. it's setting

  2103. in light

  2104. within us

  2105. not only an

  2106. awareness of

  2107. right and

  2108. wrong

  2109. but in a

  2110. sense the

  2111. spiritual

  2112. quandary

  2113. that we

  2114. need to

  2115. come to

  2116. the point

  2117. that we

  2118. realize that

  2119. God has

  2120. to do

  2121. something

  2122. and it's

  2123. hard for us

  2124. to imagine

  2125. what God

  2126. could do

  2127. we ourselves

  2128. every single

  2129. one of us

  2130. here

  2131. as the

  2132. book of

  2133. Amos

  2134. goes on

  2135. it's going

  2136. to talk

  2137. about how

  2138. we treat

  2139. the weak

  2140. and how

  2141. we treat

  2142. the poor

  2143. and how

  2144. we do

  2145. how we

  2146. misuse

  2147. religion

  2148. and how

  2149. we

  2150. misuse

  2151. spirituality

  2152. every single

  2153. one of us

  2154. will be

  2155. confronted

  2156. in some

  2157. ways

  2158. and in

  2159. every single

  2160. case

  2161. how could

  2162. God

  2163. revoke

  2164. the

  2165. punishment

  2166. of the

  2167. cross

  2168. is that

  2169. 750 years

  2170. 800 years

  2171. after this

  2172. there will

  2173. be a

  2174. pagan

  2175. king

  2176. and there

  2177. will be

  2178. a pagan

  2179. empire

  2180. and they

  2181. believe that

  2182. they can

  2183. stop a

  2184. people

  2185. movement

  2186. by killing

  2187. its

  2188. representative

  2189. in such

  2190. a shameful

  2191. way

  2192. that the

  2193. people

  2194. movement

  2195. will come

  2196. to an

  2197. end

  2198. and if

  2199. they deal

  2200. with the

  2201. representative

  2202. they have

  2203. dealt

  2204. with the

  2205. people

  2206. movement

  2207. and they

  2208. hung him

  2209. upon a

  2210. cross

  2211. as their

  2212. representative

  2213. and as

  2214. yours

  2215. mine

  2216. and three

  2217. days later

  2218. he rose

  2219. God

  2220. does not

  2221. revoke

  2222. my

  2223. punishment

  2224. and he

  2225. does not

  2226. revoke

  2227. yours

  2228. but he

  2229. sends

  2230. his

  2231. son

  2232. he

  2233. himself

  2234. bears

  2235. the

  2236. punishment

  2237. that you

  2238. and I

  2239. deserve

  2240. he

  2241. takes

  2242. that

  2243. in his

  2244. person

  2245. as my

  2246. substitute

  2247. and exchanges

  2248. with me

  2249. when I

  2250. put my

  2251. faith and

  2252. trust in

  2253. him

  2254. his

  2255. perfect

  2256. righteousness

  2257. and standing

  2258. with the

  2259. father

  2260. my

  2261. evil

  2262. is not

  2263. revoked

  2264. in my

  2265. place

  2266. condemned

  2267. he

  2268. stood

  2269. in my

  2270. place

  2271. condemned

  2272. he

  2273. stood

  2274. the book

  2275. of

  2276. Ezekiel

  2277. says

  2278. God

  2279. takes

  2280. no

  2281. delight

  2282. in

  2283. the

  2284. death

  2285. of

  2286. a

  2287. sinner

  2288. but

  2289. rather

  2290. that

  2291. he

  2292. would

  2293. turn

  2294. from

  2295. his

  2296. wickedness

  2297. and

  2298. live

  2299. and

  2300. John

  2301. chapter 2

  2302. verses

  2303. 1

  2304. and 2

  2305. says

  2306. my

  2307. little

  2308. children

  2309. I

  2310. am

  2311. writing

  2312. these

  2313. things

  2314. to you

  2315. that

  2316. you

  2317. may

  2318. not

  2319. sin

  2320. but

  2321. if

  2322. anyone

  2323. does

  2324. sin

  2325. we

  2326. have

  2327. an

  2328. advocate

  2329. with

  2330. the

  2331. father

  2332. Jesus

  2333. Christ

  2334. the

  2335. righteous

  2336. he

  2337. is

  2338. the

  2339. propitiation

  2340. for

  2341. our

  2342. but

  2343. also

  2344. for

  2345. the

  2346. sins

  2347. of

  2348. the

  2349. whole

  2350. world

  2351. for

  2352. Moabites

  2353. and

  2354. Edomites

  2355. and

  2356. Syrians

  2357. and

  2358. Assyrians

  2359. and

  2360. Philistines

  2361. and

  2362. Phoenicians

  2363. Andrew

  2364. if you

  2365. could

  2366. put up

  2367. the

  2368. first of

  2369. the

  2370. three

  2371. concluding

  2372. prayers

  2373. remember

  2374. I said

  2375. that the

  2376. Lord

  2377. roars

  2378. in

  2379. mercy

  2380. here's

  2381. the

  2382. prayer

  2383. that

  2384. we

  2385. can

  2386. respond

  2387. dear

  2388. Lord

  2389. please

  2390. make

  2391. me

  2392. a

  2393. disciple

  2394. of

  2395. Jesus

  2396. gripped

  2397. by

  2398. the

  2399. gospel

  2400. humbly

  2401. growing

  2402. in

  2403. gratitude

  2404. that

  2405. in

  2406. my

  2407. place

  2408. condemned

  2409. he

  2410. stood

  2411. friend

  2412. if

  2413. you

  2414. are

  2415. here

  2416. and

  2417. you

  2418. have

  2419. not

  2420. given

  2421. your

  2422. life

  2423. to

  2424. Jesus

  2425. you

  2426. need

  2427. to

  2428. understand

  2429. what

  2430. he

  2431. did

  2432. for

  2433. you

  2434. on

  2435. the

  2436. cross

  2437. if

  2438. you

  2439. have

  2440. had

  2441. an

  2442. abortion

  2443. if

  2444. you

  2445. have

  2446. counseled

  2447. for

  2448. abortion

  2449. if

  2450. you

  2451. work

  2452. in

  2453. an

  2454. abortion

  2455. clinic

  2456. and

  2457. you

  2458. are

  2459. here

  2460. today

  2461. there's

  2462. nothing

  2463. you

  2464. can

  2465. do

  2466. that

  2467. is

  2468. better

  2469. you

  2470. can't

  2471. undo

  2472. what

  2473. you

  2474. did

  2475. but

  2476. you

  2477. and

  2478. he

  2479. stood

  2480. and

  2481. bore

  2482. the

  2483. punishment

  2484. that

  2485. you

  2486. deserved

  2487. there's

  2488. grace

  2489. and

  2490. there's

  2491. mercy

  2492. and

  2493. there's

  2494. another

  2495. thing

  2496. in here

  2497. which

  2498. is

  2499. really

  2500. important

  2501. if

  2502. you

  2503. could

  2504. put

  2505. up

  2506. the

  2507. next

  2508. prayer

  2509. Andrew

  2510. remember

  2511. I

  2512. told

  2513. you

  2514. that

  2515. maybe

  2516. this

  2517. prophecy

  2518. might

  2519. have

  2520. been

  2521. written

  2522. in

  2523. 752

  2524. and

  2525. in

  2526. 722

  2527. Assyria

  2528. invades

  2529. and

  2530. Israel

  2531. is

  2532. destroyed

  2533. and

  2534. the

  2535. Lord

  2536. roars

  2537. in

  2538. mercy

  2539. and

  2540. the

  2541. hope

  2542. that

  2543. people

  2544. will

  2545. repent

  2546. here's

  2547. a

  2548. problem

  2549. for

  2550. us

  2551. let's

  2552. just

  2553. be

  2554. honest

  2555. for

  2556. a

  2557. second

  2558. I

  2559. live

  2560. in

  2561. an

  2562. instant

  2563. society

  2564. if

  2565. all

  2566. of a

  2567. sudden

  2568. you

  2569. had

  2570. to

  2571. go

  2572. back

  2573. to

  2574. use

  2575. computers

  2576. that

  2577. were

  2578. around

  2579. in

  2580. 1995

  2581. and

  2582. you

  2583. turn

  2584. the

  2585. computer

  2586. on

  2587. and

  2588. you

  2589. have

  2590. enough

  2591. time

  2592. to

  2593. go

  2594. and

  2595. make

  2596. yourself

  2597. a

  2598. cup

  2599. of

  2600. coffee

  2601. to

  2602. come

  2603. back

  2604. before

  2605. it

  2606. booted

  2607. up

  2608. nobody

  2609. would

  2610. use

  2611. that

  2612. computer

  2613. today

  2614. Starbucks

  2615. now

  2616. has

  2617. an

  2618. app

  2619. that

  2620. if

  2621. I

  2622. order

  2623. my

  2624. coffee

  2625. at

  2626. the

  2627. office

  2628. and

  2629. I

  2630. indicate

  2631. that

  2632. I'm

  2633. walking

  2634. it

  2635. tracks

  2636. my

  2637. movement

  2638. so

  2639. that

  2640. when

  2641. I

  2642. get

  2643. to

  2644. Starbucks

  2645. I

  2646. don't

  2647. have

  2648. to

  2649. wait

  2650. in

  2651. line

  2652. I

  2653. can

  2654. go

  2655. and

  2656. get

  2657. my

  2658. coffee

  2659. right

  2660. away

  2661. we

  2662. live

  2663. in

  2664. an

  2665. instant

  2666. society

  2667. how

  2668. many

  2669. of

  2670. us

  2671. possibly

  2672. could

  2673. understand

  2674. the

  2675. call

  2676. to

  2677. pray

  2678. for

  2679. somebody

  2680. or

  2681. something

  2682. for

  2683. 10

  2684. 20

  2685. 30

  2686. years

  2687. without

  2688. falling

  2689. into

  2690. despair

  2691. without

  2692. falling

  2693. into

  2694. cynicism

  2695. without

  2696. falling

  2697. into

  2698. just

  2699. complete

  2700. and utter

  2701. laziness

  2702. and

  2703. hopelessness

  2704. and

  2705. this

  2706. passage

  2707. of

  2708. scripture

  2709. is a

  2710. profound

  2711. call

  2712. for

  2713. us

  2714. to

  2715. call

  2716. out

  2717. to

  2718. God

  2719. that

  2720. he

  2721. would

  2722. teach

  2723. us

  2724. and

  2725. help

  2726. us

  2727. to

  2728. pray

  2729. for

  2730. our

  2731. nation

  2732. or

  2733. for

  2734. people

  2735. or

  2736. for

  2737. social

  2738. structures

  2739. or

  2740. for

  2741. social

  2742. evils

  2743. that

  2744. might

  2745. call

  2746. us

  2747. to

  2748. pray

  2749. for

  2750. 30

  2751. years

  2752. without

  2753. being

  2754. cynical

  2755. without

  2756. being

  2757. hopeless

  2758. dear

  2759. Lord

  2760. please

  2761. make

  2762. me

  2763. a

  2764. disciple

  2765. of

  2766. Jesus

  2767. gripped

  2768. by

  2769. the

  2770. gospel

  2771. growing

  2772. in

  2773. the

  2774. habit

  2775. of

  2776. daily

  2777. uncynical

  2778. non

  2779. despairing

  2780. persistent

  2781. decades

  2782. long

  2783. prayer

  2784. and the

  2785. final thing

  2786. if you

  2787. could just

  2788. put it

  2789. up

  2790. Andrew

  2791. if I

  2792. I'd

  2793. like

  2794. you

  2795. all

  2796. to

  2797. stand

  2798. no

  2799. you can

  2800. pray for

  2801. those

  2802. things

  2803. you don't

  2804. have to

  2805. worry about

  2806. how hard

  2807. it is

  2808. that's

  2809. why

  2810. I had

  2811. the

  2812. Holy

  2813. Spirit

  2814. dear

  2815. Lord

  2816. please

  2817. make me

  2818. a

  2819. disciple

  2820. of

  2821. Jesus

  2822. gripped

  2823. by

  2824. the

  2825. gospel

  2826. growing

  2827. in

  2828. my

  2829. fight

  2830. against

  2831. the

  2832. evil

  2833. I

  2834. do

  2835. and

  2836. the

  2837. evil

  2838. in

  2839. the

  2840. world

  2841. that's

  2842. what

  2843. this

  2844. call

  2845. is

  2846. Martin

  2847. Luther

  2848. King

  2849. he

  2850. looked

  2851. at

  2852. centuries

  2853. centuries

  2854. of

  2855. oppression

  2856. and he

  2857. said

  2858. I'm

  2859. not

  2860. going to

  2861. surrender

  2862. to

  2863. this

  2864. some

  2865. evil

  2866. needs

  2867. to be

  2868. resisted

  2869. and resist

  2870. and resisted

  2871. resisted

  2872. we live

  2873. in a

  2874. culture

  2875. of

  2876. death

  2877. that is

  2878. growing

  2879. many

  2880. of us

  2881. believe

  2882. the

  2883. culture

  2884. of

  2885. death

  2886. is

  2887. bigger

  2888. than

  2889. God

  2890. what

  2891. can

  2892. we

  2893. do

  2894. against

  2895. the

  2896. institutional

  2897. elites

  2898. the

  2899. educational

  2900. elites

  2901. the

  2902. Hollywood

  2903. elites

  2904. the

  2905. artistic

  2906. elites

  2907. the

  2908. government

  2909. elites

  2910. the

  2911. business

  2912. elites

  2913. what

  2914. can

  2915. we

  2916. do

  2917. against

  2918. them

  2919. they're

  2920. all

  2921. too

  2922. big

  2923. no

  2924. God

  2925. is

  2926. bigger

  2927. he

  2928. calls

  2929. us

  2930. to

  2931. resist

  2932. evil

  2933. and

  2934. not

  2935. only

  2936. resist

  2937. the

  2938. evil

  2939. but

  2940. for

  2941. those

  2942. of

  2943. us

  2944. who

  2945. struggle

  2946. maybe

  2947. it's

  2948. with

  2949. pornography

  2950. maybe

  2951. it's

  2952. with

  2953. an

  2954. angry

  2955. temper

  2956. maybe

  2957. it's

  2958. with

  2959. greed

  2960. maybe

  2961. it's

  2962. with

  2963. gluttony

  2964. whatever

  2965. it is

  2966. that

  2967. we

  2968. come

  2969. to

  2970. God

  2971. and

  2972. say

  2973. I

  2974. will

  2975. not

  2976. surrender

  2977. to

  2978. this

  2979. I

  2980. will

  2981. not

  2982. view

  2983. this

  2984. as

  2985. normal

  2986. I

  2987. will

  2988. be

  2989. gripped

  2990. by

  2991. the

  2992. gospel

  2993. gratitude

  2994. for

  2995. what

  2996. you

  2997. have

  2998. done

  2999. for

  3000. me

  3001. on

  3002. the

  3003. cross

  3004. and

  3005. I

  3006. will

  3007. continue

  3008. to

  3009. repent

  3010. and

  3011. I

  3012. will

  3013. continue

  3014. to

  3015. call

  3016. out

  3017. in

  3018. prayer

  3019. and

  3020. do

  3021. what

  3022. I

  3023. can

  3024. to

  3025. stop

  3026. the

  3027. institutional

  3028. and

  3029. social

  3030. structural

  3031. evil

  3032. of

  3033. the

  3034. world

  3035. let's

  3036. bow

  3037. our heads

  3038. in

  3039. prayer

  3040. father

  3041. we

  3042. thank you

  3043. for these

  3044. powerful

  3045. words

  3046. of

  3047. Amos

  3048. father

  3049. we

  3050. come

  3051. to

  3052. you

  3053. again

  3054. we

  3055. said

  3056. it

  3057. early

  3058. on

  3059. the

  3060. prayer

  3061. but

  3062. we

  3063. confess

  3064. before

  3065. you

  3066. father

  3067. it

  3068. seems

  3069. father

  3070. as

  3071. if

  3072. it's

  3073. our

  3074. natural

  3075. default

  3076. to

  3077. think

  3078. that

  3079. you

  3080. are

  3081. small

  3082. and

  3083. that

  3084. these

  3085. other

  3086. things

  3087. and

  3088. these

  3089. problems

  3090. in

  3091. our

  3092. lives

  3093. that

  3094. they

  3095. are

  3096. too

  3097. big

  3098. father

  3099. we

  3100. ask

  3101. that

  3102. your

  3103. holy

  3104. spirit

  3105. would

  3106. do

  3107. a

  3108. mighty

  3109. work

  3110. in

  3111. our

  3112. lives

  3113. that

  3114. you

  3115. would

  3116. grip

  3117. us

  3118. with

  3119. the

  3120. gospel

  3121. that

  3122. you

  3123. would

  3124. grip

  3125. us

  3126. with

  3127. the

  3128. scriptures

  3129. that

  3130. you

  3131. would

  3132. grip

  3133. us

  3134. father

  3135. to

  3136. grow

  3137. day

  3138. by

  3139. day

  3140. and

  3141. a

  3142. growing

  3143. knowledge

  3144. that

  3145. you

  3146. are

  3147. big

  3148. and

  3149. everything

  3150. created

  3151. everything

  3152. human

  3153. is

  3154. small

  3155. that

  3156. you

  3157. would

  3158. grow

  3159. within

  3160. us

  3161. an

  3162. ever

  3163. deeper

  3164. father

  3165. trust

  3166. and

  3167. belief

  3168. in

  3169. this

  3170. father

  3171. we

  3172. call

  3173. out

  3174. to

  3175. you

  3176. to

  3177. do

  3178. it

  3179. in

  3180. our

  3181. lives

  3182. as

  3183. individuals

  3184. and

  3185. as

  3186. a

  3187. church

  3188. and

  3189. we

  3190. ask

  3191. this

  3192. in

  3193. the

  3194. name

  3195. of

  3196. Jesus

  3197. your

  3198. son

  3199. and

  3200. our

  3201. savior

  3202. amen
