  1. Bibles to Genesis chapter 45.

    Genesis 45 chapter mention

  2. You'll find it on page 51 of the Church Bible.

  3. Last week, we got to the stage in Joseph's story

  4. where after 20 years, he revealed himself

  5. to the brothers who had sold him as a slave

  6. and thought they would never see him again.

  7. And now we're going to move towards Joseph being reconciled,

  8. being reunited to his father Jacob

  9. and settling in the land of Egypt.

  10. We're going to try and cover a lot of ground today,

  11. which means there's a fair bit to read from this story.

  12. Let's hear God's Word beginning, first of all,

  13. in Genesis 45 and at verse 9.

  14. It's his words of Joseph to his brothers.

  15. Now, hurry back to my father and say to him,

  16. this is what your son Joseph says.

  17. God has made me Lord of all Egypt.

  18. Come down to me, don't delay.

  19. You shall live in the region of Goshen and be near me.

  20. You, your children and grandchildren,

  21. your flocks and herds and all you have,

  22. I will provide for you there

  23. because five years of famine are still to come.

  24. Otherwise, you and your household and all who belong to you

  25. will become destitute.

  26. You can see for yourselves and so can my brother Benjamin

  27. that it is really I who am speaking to you.

  28. Tell my father about all the honor accorded me in Egypt

  29. and about everything you have seen

  30. and bring my father down here quickly.

  31. Then he threw his arms around his brother Benjamin and wept

  32. and Benjamin embraced him, weeping.

  33. And he kissed all his brothers and wept over them.

  34. Afterwards, his brothers talked with him.

  35. When the news reached Pharaoh's palace

  36. that Joseph's brothers had come,

  37. Pharaoh and all his officials were pleased.

  38. Pharaoh said to Joseph,

  39. tell your brothers, do this,

  40. load your animals and return to the land of Canaan

  41. and bring your father and your families back to me.

  42. I will give you the best of the land of Egypt

  43. and you can enjoy the fat of the land.

  44. You are also directed to tell them, do this,

  45. take some carts from Egypt for your children and your wives

  46. and get your father and come.

  47. Never mind about your belongings

  48. because the best of all Egypt will be yours.

  49. So the sons of Israel did this.

  50. Joseph gave them carts as Pharaoh had commanded

  51. and he also gave them provisions for their journey.

  52. To each of them he gave new clothing,

  53. but to Benjamin he gave 300 shekels of silver

  54. and five sets of clothes.

  55. And this is what he sent to his father,

  56. ten donkeys loaded with the best things of Egypt

  57. and ten female donkeys loaded with grain and bread

  58. and other provisions for his journey.

  59. Then he sent his brothers away

  60. and as they were leaving he said to them,

  61. don't quarrel on the way.

  62. So they went up out of Egypt

  63. and came to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan.

  64. They told him, Joseph is still alive.

  65. In fact, he is ruler of all Egypt.

  66. Jacob was stunned.

  67. He did not believe them.

  68. But when they told him everything Joseph had said to them

  69. and when he saw the carts Joseph had sent to carry him back,

  70. the spirit of their father Jacob revived.

  71. And Israel said, I am convinced.

  72. My son Joseph is still alive.

  73. I will go and see him before I die.

  74. So Israel set out with all that was his

  75. and when he reached Beersheba,

  76. he offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac.

  77. And God spoke to Israel in a vision at night

  78. and said, Jacob, Jacob, here I am, he replied.

  79. I am God, the God of your father, he said.

  80. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt

  81. for I will make you into a great nation there.

  82. I will go down to Egypt with you

  83. and I will surely bring you back again.

  84. And Joseph's own hand will close your eyes.

  85. Then Jacob left Beersheba

  86. and Israel's sons took their father Jacob

  87. and their children and their wives

  88. in the carts that Pharaoh had sent to transport him.

  89. They also took with him their livestock

  90. and the possessions they'd acquired in Canaan.

  91. And Jacob and all his offspring went to Egypt.

  92. He took with him to Egypt his sons and grandsons

  93. and his daughters and granddaughters,

  94. all his offspring.

  95. And then there's the genealogy,

  96. which we will pass over,

  97. that is important.

  98. And we'll come to verse 26.

  99. All those who went to Egypt with Jacob,

  100. those who were his direct descendants,

  101. not counting his son's wives,

  102. numbered 66 persons.

  103. With the two sons who'd been born to Joseph in Egypt,

  104. the members of Jacob's family,

  105. which went to Egypt, were 70 in all.

  106. Now Jacob sent Judah ahead of him to Joseph

  107. to get directions to Goshen.

  108. When they arrived in the region of Goshen,

  109. Joseph had his chariot made ready

  110. and went to Goshen to meet his father Israel.

  111. As soon as Joseph appeared before him,

  112. he threw his arms around his father

  113. and wept for a long time.

  114. Israel said to Joseph,

  115. Now I am ready to die,

  116. since I have seen for myself

  117. that you are still alive.

  118. Then Joseph said to his brothers

  119. and to his father's household,

  120. I will go up and speak to Pharaoh

  121. and will say to him,

  122. My brothers and my father's household

  123. who are living in the land of Canaan

  124. have come to meet.

  125. The men are shepherds,

  126. they tend livestock,

  127. and they have brought along their flocks

  128. and herds and everything they own.

  129. When Pharaoh calls you in and asks,

  130. What is your occupation?

  131. You should answer,

  132. Your servants have tended livestock

  133. from our boyhood on,

  134. just as our fathers did.

  135. Then you will be allowed to settle

  136. in the region of Goshen,

  137. for all shepherds are detestable

  138. to the Egyptians.

  139. Joseph went and told Pharaoh,

  140. My father and brothers,

  141. with their flocks and herds

  142. and everything they own,

  143. have come from the land of Canaan

  144. and are now in Goshen.

  145. He chose five of his brothers

  146. and presented them before Pharaoh.

  147. Pharaoh asked the brothers,

  148. What is your occupation?

  149. Your servants are shepherds,

  150. they replied to Pharaoh,

  151. just as our fathers were.

  152. They also said to him,

  153. We have come to live here a while,

  154. because the famine is severe in Canaan

  155. and your servants' flocks

  156. have no pasture.

  157. So now,

  158. please let your servants settle in Goshen.

  159. Pharaoh said to Joseph,

  160. Your father and your brothers

  161. have come to you,

  162. and the land of Egypt is before you.

  163. Settle your father and your brothers

  164. in the best part of the land.

  165. Let them live in Goshen,

  166. and if you know of any among them

  167. with special ability,

  168. put them in charge of my own livestock.

  169. Then Joseph brought his father Jacob in

  170. and presented him before Pharaoh.

  171. After Jacob blessed Pharaoh,

  172. Pharaoh asked him,

  173. How old are you?

  174. And Jacob said to Pharaoh,

  175. The years of my pilgrimage are 130.

  176. My years have been few and difficult,

  177. and they do not equal the years

  178. of the pilgrimage of my fathers.

  179. Then Jacob blessed Pharaoh

  180. and went out from his presence.

  181. So Joseph settled his father

  182. and his brothers in Egypt

  183. and gave them property

  184. in the best part of the land,

  185. the district of Ramesses,

  186. as Pharaoh directed.

  187. Joseph also provided his father

  188. and his brothers

  189. and all his father's household

  190. with food,

  191. according to the number

  192. of their children.

  193. Amen.

  194. And here we see a long period

  195. of 45 to 47,

  196. sort of two and a bit chapters.

  197. But again, we're going to see God's grace

  198. in the story of this family.

  199. I wonder if you ever find yourself reflecting,

  200. how did we get here as a family?

  201. What are the major points

  202. in our family history?

  203. What are those defining moments

  204. that still have an impact,

  205. that still set the direction

  206. for our family today?

  207. There's a psychologist,

  208. an author in the States

  209. called Mary Pifer,

  210. and she reckons that history

  211. is inextricably linked to identity.

  212. She asked the question,

  213. if you don't know your history,

  214. if you don't know your family,

  215. who are you?

  216. And I wonder if you agree

  217. with that sentiment,

  218. the significance of either

  219. political, national,

  220. or family history

  221. for defining our own lives.

  222. It's certainly interesting

  223. to think about

  224. and certainly interesting

  225. to think about

  226. how did we get here?

  227. When you read the Bible,

  228. you see that God's people

  229. are a people who look back

  230. and who reflect.

  231. So you see them put up monuments.

  232. God speaks or God delivers,

  233. and you see monuments

  234. being established.

  235. There are people who recite,

  236. who sing national history,

  237. particularly thinking

  238. about God's dealings with them,

  239. particularly God's redemption of them.

  240. And when you come

  241. to the New Testament church,

  242. what we see is frequent reminders

  243. to look back

  244. to the cross of Jesus,

  245. to remember his death,

  246. to remember his resurrection

  247. for our ongoing walk of faith.

  248. Why is that?

  249. Why is it important

  250. for us to keep reflecting?

  251. Well, because in those reflections,

  252. we are being reminded

  253. both that we are great sinners

  254. who have need,

  255. and we have a great Savior.

  256. It's a way for us

  257. to connect our own personal stories,

  258. our family stories,

  259. to the story of a helping,

  260. saving, delivering God.

  261. So here is Moses again,

  262. writing history.

  263. He's writing some hundreds

  264. of years later,

  265. but as he writes this part

  266. of the story,

  267. he is remembering

  268. and helping the people of God,

  269. helping us indeed

  270. to reflect

  271. that God has always kept

  272. his promise

  273. to save and to bless.

  274. Both in Jacob

  275. and his family's arrival

  276. into Egypt,

  277. and then as Moses led

  278. that family,

  279. now a nation,

  280. out of Egypt.

  281. So we're going to look

  282. at three big ideas

  283. connected to God's grace.

  284. First of all,

  285. in chapter 45,

  286. God's grace

  287. in the honor

  288. that this family receives.

  289. It's so significant

  290. as Joseph speaks

  291. to his brothers,

  292. the number of times

  293. where he says,

  294. five times I think,

  295. he says,

  296. God has raised me up.

  297. We read it a couple of times

  298. in our section.

  299. Verse 9,

  300. God has made me

  301. Lord of Egypt.

  302. And in verse 13,

  303. tell my father

  304. about all the honor

  305. accorded me in Egypt.

  306. God has raised Joseph

  307. to this position

  308. of prominence

  309. so that God would keep

  310. his promise

  311. to this family

  312. through Joseph

  313. and through his position.

  314. So we read verses 10 and 11,

  315. and we see the comprehensive care

  316. that Joseph will provide

  317. for his family

  318. because of his position.

  319. They can have the best land,

  320. they can take themselves

  321. and their flocks

  322. and they'll have food.

  323. Perhaps even more striking

  324. is that Pharaoh himself

  325. will honor this foreign family

  326. because Joseph,

  327. with the help of God,

  328. had rescued Egypt.

  329. Verse 16 to 20,

  330. we see that.

  331. But especially,

  332. verse 18,

  333. Pharaoh says to Joseph,

  334. I will give you

  335. the best of the land

  336. of Egypt

  337. and you can enjoy

  338. the fat of the land.

  339. And he gives this message

  340. to his family.

  341. Verse 20,

  342. never mind about your belongings

  343. because the best of all Egypt

  344. will be yours.

  345. They are being honored

  346. through Joseph

  347. and his position.

  348. And then as we got

  349. to the end of the chapter,

  350. as the brothers went back

  351. with their carts full of goods,

  352. they came back

  353. with this good news,

  354. Joseph is alive.

  355. And we see eventually

  356. Jacob the father's grief

  357. turning to joy.

  358. At first,

  359. he's so stunned by the news

  360. that Jacob is,

  361. Joseph is alive.

  362. He can't believe it.

  363. But eventually,

  364. he hears and believes

  365. that his son

  366. has been raised up.

  367. And we see,

  368. verse 27,

  369. the spirit of their father,

  370. Jacob, revived.

  371. He's ready to go

  372. and meet his son.

  373. So Moses is writing

  374. a long history.

  375. He's writing the long history

  376. of this family.

  377. But he's making the point

  378. again and again

  379. that God always

  380. keeps his promises.

  381. Beyond the challenges

  382. that were faced,

  383. beyond the challenges

  384. of timing,

  385. this family will enter Egypt

  386. with honor

  387. and they will depart

  388. from Egypt

  389. with wealth

  390. and freedom

  391. and honor.

  392. It seems as if Moses

  393. wants to draw attention

  394. to the parallels

  395. between the story

  396. of Joseph

  397. and his pharaoh

  398. and then hundreds

  399. of years later,

  400. Moses and his

  401. very different pharaoh.

  402. So when the family

  403. were coming into Egypt,

  404. Joseph's pharaoh

  405. joyfully permits them

  406. to come and enjoy

  407. the best of the land.

  408. But if you know

  409. the story of Exodus

  410. and you get to

  411. Moses' pharaoh,

  412. he grudgingly

  413. is forced to allow

  414. the family

  415. that's become

  416. a nation to lead.

  417. It's significant

  418. the position of Joseph

  419. and Moses

  420. within Pharaoh's house.

  421. Joseph has been raised

  422. up by God

  423. to become a ruler

  424. in Pharaoh's household

  425. whereas Moses

  426. was a prince

  427. being raised

  428. in the royal household

  429. but he left

  430. and then came back

  431. to pull God's people out.

  432. When we've seen

  433. the actions of God

  434. through Joseph

  435. in this pharaoh,

  436. as Joseph was given

  437. the ability

  438. to interpret

  439. Pharaoh's dreams,

  440. that softens

  441. Pharaoh's heart

  442. and he shows favor

  443. to Joseph and his family

  444. but when God

  445. shows up in power

  446. in Moses' story

  447. to the pharaoh

  448. through the plagues,

  449. it serves to harden

  450. his already hard heart.

  451. So there is similarity

  452. but striking contrast

  453. but the point is

  454. that the attitude

  455. of a ruler

  456. is neither here

  457. nor there.

  458. Nothing is going to stop

  459. the purposes of God.

  460. The apparent disaster

  461. being faced

  462. by this family

  463. over the course

  464. of 20 years,

  465. family dysfunction

  466. caused by sin,

  467. none of it is going

  468. to stop God's promises

  469. from coming about.

  470. Nothing and no one

  471. can limit God's

  472. promised grace

  473. is the good news

  474. of the Jacob

  475. and Joseph story.

  476. And when we think

  477. about who Moses

  478. is writing to,

  479. he's writing to the

  480. newly established

  481. nation of Israel.

  482. Here they are

  483. in the wilderness

  484. around Mount Sinai.

  485. They still are not

  486. in the promised land.

  487. They're still weak

  488. and vulnerable

  489. as people.

  490. But here is encouragement

  491. to look back

  492. to their story,

  493. to look back

  494. to God's faithfulness

  495. in their story.

  496. And that's the same

  497. lesson for us too

  498. when we feel weak,

  499. vulnerable,

  500. when we are struggling

  501. to trust,

  502. when circumstances

  503. are hard,

  504. we are encouraged

  505. to look back

  506. to see God's grace,

  507. to see it primarily

  508. at the cross of Jesus,

  509. but to see it

  510. in our own lives

  511. of how God

  512. has provided

  513. and cared for us.

  514. And of course,

  515. as always,

  516. we want to see

  517. how this part

  518. of the Joseph story

  519. points us to Jesus.

  520. So we see that God,

  521. and Joseph is very

  522. deliberate on this,

  523. saying,

  524. God raised me up.

  525. And Jesus will see

  526. that God was raising

  527. him up for us,

  528. for his people.

  529. Jesus is raised up

  530. in glory.

  531. He is raised up

  532. in glory

  533. as he obediently

  534. gives his life

  535. as that perfect sacrifice

  536. for sin

  537. to secure

  538. the salvation

  539. of those

  540. who would trust in him.

  541. Jesus is then

  542. raised up in glory

  543. beyond death.

  544. Death could not

  545. hold him.

  546. And then Jesus

  547. is raised up

  548. and returned

  549. to the glory of heaven

  550. where he now rules

  551. and reigns

  552. and prays

  553. and intercedes

  554. for his people.

  555. And because Jesus

  556. is raised up

  557. for his church,

  558. Jesus is the one

  559. we look to

  560. to provide

  561. all that we need.

  562. Just as Jacob

  563. and his family,

  564. outside of Joseph's help,

  565. would be poor

  566. and helpless.

  567. So we come

  568. to Jesus

  569. spiritually poor

  570. and helpless.

  571. But in Jesus,

  572. we become spiritually rich.

  573. If we trust in him,

  574. all those spiritual blessings

  575. promised in the Bible

  576. come to us.

  577. Forgiveness,

  578. being declared

  579. just in God's sight,

  580. adopted into God's family,

  581. the assurance

  582. that we belong,

  583. the promise of heaven,

  584. all of those

  585. and so many more

  586. come because Jesus

  587. is raised up for you.

  588. And just as Joseph

  589. in his position

  590. secured Jacob

  591. and his family's welcome

  592. before Pharaoh,

  593. Jesus secures

  594. our welcome

  595. from our King,

  596. our Father

  597. in heaven.

  598. Jesus is our friend

  599. in high places.

  600. Jesus, as it were,

  601. says of his people,

  602. he or she

  603. is with me.

  604. The access,

  605. the privilege,

  606. the love,

  607. the joy that Jesus has,

  608. he brings us

  609. into that

  610. as we follow him,

  611. as we are united

  612. to him.

  613. And Jesus

  614. is the one,

  615. because he has been

  616. raised up,

  617. is able to turn

  618. grief

  619. to joy.

  620. He can turn

  621. the grief

  622. of our guilt

  623. to the joy

  624. of forgiveness,

  625. the grief

  626. of a fear

  627. of death,

  628. to the joy

  629. of assurance

  630. of knowing

  631. that Jesus

  632. will never let us

  633. go now

  634. and for eternity.

  635. The grief

  636. of being

  637. an enemy

  638. of God

  639. and loaded

  640. down with a weight

  641. of sin and guilt

  642. to the joy

  643. of becoming

  644. a friend of God

  645. as Jesus

  646. forgives our sin

  647. and secures

  648. our peace.

  649. Jesus is raised

  650. up for you

  651. and for me

  652. and we need

  653. to trust in him

  654. to receive

  655. these wonderful

  656. blessings.

  657. We also see

  658. God's grace

  659. in this

  660. growing family.

  661. So we're now

  662. in chapter 46

  663. and especially

  664. the first

  665. 27 verses.

  666. So in the book

  667. of Genesis

  668. we discover

  669. God has made

  670. a wonderful promise,

  671. first of all

  672. to Abraham

  673. and then to

  674. his son Isaac

  675. then to his

  676. grandson Jacob.

  677. A restated

  678. promise

  679. from God

  680. that says

  681. I will make

  682. you into

  683. a great

  684. nation.

  685. And that promise

  686. comes into view

  687. again.

  688. But at the beginning

  689. of chapter 46

  690. we find Jacob

  691. moving towards

  692. Egypt

  693. and we find

  694. him worshipping

  695. God

  696. offering sacrifices

  697. and then God

  698. speaks to him

  699. in a vision

  700. and in verse

  701. 3

  702. we see

  703. I am God

  704. the God

  705. of your

  706. father

  707. do not be

  708. afraid to go

  709. down to

  710. Egypt

  711. for I will

  712. make you

  713. into a

  714. great nation

  715. there.

  716. So there's

  717. that promise

  718. again

  719. I will make

  720. you a

  721. great nation

  722. and there is

  723. comfort for

  724. Jacob

  725. in verse 4

  726. I will go

  727. down to

  728. Egypt

  729. with you

  730. and I will

  731. surely bring

  732. you back

  733. again

  734. the hope

  735. of the

  736. promised land

  737. is always

  738. there in

  739. view

  740. with this

  741. promise.

  742. But think

  743. of this

  744. here is

  745. Jacob

  746. and he told

  747. Pharaoh how

  748. old he was

  749. he was 130

  750. years old

  751. and now here

  752. he is at

  753. that age

  754. having to

  755. move out

  756. of

  757. move away

  758. from

  759. the promised

  760. land

  761. and he's

  762. moving towards

  763. Egypt

  764. and one of

  765. the places

  766. where things

  767. had begun

  768. to go

  769. wrong

  770. for

  771. Abraham

  772. his grandfather

  773. where the

  774. promise had

  775. been under

  776. threat

  777. the place

  778. where Isaac

  779. his father

  780. had been

  781. told don't

  782. go anywhere

  783. near

  784. Egypt

  785. now Jacob

  786. is going

  787. but he's

  788. being told

  789. I will go

  790. with you

  791. and in that

  792. context I will

  793. make you

  794. a great

  795. nation

  796. there's that

  797. wonderful

  798. promise as

  799. Jacob is on

  800. the move

  801. that God's

  802. love and

  803. God's promise

  804. goes with

  805. him

  806. God's love

  807. promise is

  808. without

  809. borders

  810. so verse

  811. five to

  812. seven we

  813. see Jacob

  814. and the

  815. family

  816. on the

  817. move

  818. and if

  819. you've

  820. ever moved

  821. your family

  822. you've had a

  823. sense of

  824. all that's

  825. involved in

  826. that all

  827. the packing

  828. all the

  829. organization

  830. all the

  831. goodbyes

  832. that need

  833. to be

  834. said

  835. here is

  836. Jacob

  837. and 66

  838. direct

  839. descendants

  840. all moving

  841. together

  842. from Canaan

  843. down to

  844. Egypt

  845. on this

  846. journey

  847. of obedient

  848. faith

  849. in response

  850. to God's

  851. grace

  852. and so we're

  853. told in

  854. verse 8 to

  855. 27 we

  856. didn't read

  857. it but

  858. we're told

  859. of this

  860. growing

  861. family tree

  862. deliberately

  863. in the middle

  864. of all the

  865. actions

  866. stick in a

  867. genealogy

  868. to remind

  869. us of the

  870. promise

  871. God had

  872. said that

  873. he's going

  874. to make

  875. them a

  876. great family

  877. and so we

  878. begin to

  879. see how

  880. big that

  881. family is

  882. becoming to

  883. remind us

  884. of our

  885. promise

  886. keeping

  887. God

  888. and recognize

  889. too that

  890. Moses is

  891. writing this

  892. history and

  893. by the time

  894. he is

  895. writing this

  896. family this

  897. growing family

  898. has become

  899. a nation

  900. the nation

  901. whom God

  902. has chosen

  903. and saved

  904. from slavery

  905. in Egypt

  906. so even

  907. as

  908. Egypt

  909. returned

  910. from a

  911. place

  912. that offered

  913. blessing to

  914. Jacob

  915. come and

  916. enjoy the

  917. fat of

  918. the land

  919. by Moses'

  920. time we

  921. know that

  922. Egypt had

  923. become a

  924. place of

  925. threat

  926. and if we

  927. know the

  928. story of

  929. Exodus

  930. we discover

  931. a pharaoh

  932. there hundreds

  933. of years

  934. later who

  935. is afraid

  936. of the

  937. strength of

  938. these slaves

  939. that they

  940. have

  941. trying to

  942. basically

  943. crush them

  944. with hard

  945. labor

  946. then trying

  947. to kill

  948. the first

  949. born

  950. children

  951. in each

  952. family

  953. to remove

  954. their

  955. power

  956. but God

  957. protects

  958. God's

  959. people

  960. keep

  961. growing

  962. because

  963. God's

  964. promise

  965. cannot

  966. be

  967. stopped

  968. so again

  969. as Moses

  970. helps the

  971. people to

  972. reflect

  973. they're

  974. reflecting on

  975. a national

  976. history

  977. dominated by

  978. God's

  979. mercy

  980. by God's

  981. love

  982. by God's

  983. promises

  984. being

  985. kept

  986. so important

  987. to look

  988. back

  989. and see

  990. God's

  991. faithfulness

  992. what about

  993. us in

  994. light of

  995. the coming

  996. of Jesus

  997. remember the

  998. great words

  999. of Jesus

  1000. when he

  1001. said I

  1002. will build

  1003. my church

  1004. and the

  1005. gates of

  1006. hell will

  1007. not prevail

  1008. against it

  1009. and then that

  1010. call to the

  1011. disciples

  1012. and the

  1013. great commission

  1014. you'll be my

  1015. witnesses to

  1016. Judea and

  1017. Samaria and

  1018. to the ends

  1019. of the earth

  1020. and as we

  1021. look around

  1022. 2000 years

  1023. later at the

  1024. global church

  1025. we see God's

  1026. promise is

  1027. still being

  1028. kept

  1029. God is still

  1030. building this

  1031. family of

  1032. faith

  1033. and when we

  1034. trust in

  1035. Jesus we're

  1036. brought into

  1037. that great

  1038. family of

  1039. faith and

  1040. that faith in

  1041. Jesus then

  1042. connects us

  1043. with a local

  1044. church but it

  1045. also connects us

  1046. with a global

  1047. church and the

  1048. church through

  1049. all history

  1050. so today God's

  1051. people will

  1052. worship with

  1053. very different

  1054. cultures than

  1055. ours and

  1056. different languages

  1057. than ours with

  1058. very different

  1059. worship styles

  1060. than ours but

  1061. we will share

  1062. the same

  1063. saviour and

  1064. we have the

  1065. same faith and

  1066. it's so important

  1067. for us to

  1068. remember just how

  1069. big our God is

  1070. and how big his

  1071. mission is one of

  1072. the reasons why we

  1073. had our mission

  1074. Sunday a few

  1075. weeks ago to

  1076. remind ourselves

  1077. of just some of

  1078. what God is doing

  1079. through various

  1080. mission partners

  1081. that we are

  1082. connected with

  1083. but Jesus

  1084. Jesus builds his

  1085. church God

  1086. keeps his

  1087. promise to

  1088. make his

  1089. people a

  1090. great nation

  1091. of faith and

  1092. this is of

  1093. practical importance

  1094. to us today

  1095. it's important

  1096. for us if we're

  1097. here today and

  1098. we're not a

  1099. Christian to

  1100. recognize that

  1101. Jesus would have

  1102. you to be part

  1103. of his church

  1104. his kingdom

  1105. our youth group

  1106. on Friday we

  1107. were thinking

  1108. about the story

  1109. of Jesus as

  1110. he's dying on

  1111. the cross he's

  1112. speaking to the

  1113. thief beside him

  1114. that thief who

  1115. says Lord

  1116. remember me

  1117. when you come

  1118. into your

  1119. kingdom

  1120. and Jesus

  1121. turns to that

  1122. man and says

  1123. today you will

  1124. be with me

  1125. in paradise

  1126. as he

  1127. recognized Jesus

  1128. as Lord and

  1129. Savior and in

  1130. his only hope

  1131. he turned to

  1132. Jesus and Jesus

  1133. in mercy and

  1134. love saved him

  1135. and promised him

  1136. eternal glory

  1137. with him

  1138. do you see

  1139. Jesus as the

  1140. Son of God

  1141. as Lord and

  1142. Savior

  1143. then will you

  1144. believe in him

  1145. will you trust

  1146. him

  1147. will you follow

  1148. him

  1149. today

  1150. so Jesus

  1151. building his

  1152. church is

  1153. important if

  1154. we're not yet

  1155. part of the

  1156. church but it's

  1157. also important if

  1158. we are Christians

  1159. because one of our

  1160. tasks is to be

  1161. disciples who then

  1162. make disciples of

  1163. others so it's

  1164. important for us to

  1165. remember when we're

  1166. sharing our faith

  1167. it's important for us

  1168. to remember that we

  1169. don't save anyone

  1170. in fact we cannot

  1171. save anyone

  1172. it's only God who

  1173. gives new life

  1174. but God chooses

  1175. to work through

  1176. ordinary people

  1177. like us

  1178. so we tell people

  1179. about the grace of

  1180. God we share our

  1181. story of faith with

  1182. people we want to

  1183. show the love of

  1184. God in our families

  1185. in our workplace in

  1186. our community to do

  1187. mercy to love justice

1188. for the sake of God's

1189. glory and we pray for

  1190. the people that we

1191. care about we pray for

  1192. our community our

  1193. country our nation our

  1194. world because we know

  1195. people that God

  1196. loves to save we

  1197. know that Jesus will

  1198. build his church and

  1199. he loves to work

  1200. through his people and

  1201. through his people's

  1202. prayers

1203. one last thing to see

1204. this time from the end

1205. of chapter 46 and then

  1206. into chapter 47 God's

  1207. grace in a reunited

  1208. family

  1209. family

  1210. there's something

  1211. lovely about seeing

  1212. family reunions we've

  1213. been seeing family

  1214. reunions in Jacob's

  1215. story

  1216. we were looking after

  1217. two little kids this

  1218. week for a mum and a

  1219. dad

1220. and after a few hours

  1221. we having looked after

  1222. the kids

  1223. Vicky delivered them

  1224. back

  1225. to the gathering where

  1226. the parents were along

  1227. with lots of other

  1228. people

  1229. and as soon as

  1230. the kids mum was

  1231. spotted

  1232. what would we expect

  1233. to happen

  1234. the smile came

  1235. and he started

  1236. charging

  1237. through that hall

  1238. full of people

  1239. elbows flying

  1240. plates flying

  1241. old people flying

  1242. because he wanted to

1243. be back with his mum

  1244. even after four hours

  1245. there's that sense of

  1246. happy reunion

  1247. back

  1248. home

  1249. so how about here

  1250. in the story of

  1251. Joseph

  1252. and Jacob

  1253. verse 29

  1254. and 30

  1255. Joseph had his

  1256. chariot made ready

  1257. and went to Goshen

  1258. to meet his father

  1259. Israel

  1260. as soon as Joseph

  1261. appeared before him

  1262. he threw his arms

  1263. around his father

  1264. and wept

  1265. for a long time

  1266. for both of them

  1267. this is an

  1268. unexpected joy

  1269. this is an

  1270. unimaginable

  1271. joy

  1272. they are

  1273. restored

  1274. together

  1275. the father and son

  1276. who loved each

  1277. other

  1278. are restored

  1279. after the sin

  1280. of those brothers

  1281. had destroyed

  1282. that bond

  1283. for some

  1284. 20 years

  1285. verse 30

  1286. Israel

  1287. covenant

  1288. promise

  1289. name

  1290. of Jacob

  1291. said to Joseph

  1292. now I'm ready

  1293. to die

  1294. since I abstain

  1295. for myself

  1296. that you are

  1297. still alive

  1298. he can die

  1299. happy

  1300. because he's been

  1301. reunited

  1302. to the son

  1303. he loves

  1304. and not only

  1305. will they be

  1306. reunited

  1307. they'll also

  1308. be settled

  1309. so that they

  1310. might live

  1311. together

  1312. so again

  1313. we see Joseph

  1314. preparing the way

  1315. we read that

  1316. end of 46

  1317. verse 31

  1318. to 34

  1319. we see Joseph

  1320. preparing

  1321. the way

  1322. for the brothers

  1323. to go into

  1324. the presence

  1325. of Pharaoh

  1326. so that they

  1327. will gain a

  1328. welcome from

  1329. Pharaoh

  1330. so they'll be

  1331. able to settle

  1332. in Pharaoh's

  1333. good land

  1334. again we see

  1335. another parallel

  1336. we see Joseph

  1337. and his family

  1338. they are shepherds

  1339. Moses leaves

  1340. the palace

  1341. and he becomes

  1342. a shepherd

  1343. lots of parallels

  1344. in this story

  1345. but we get

  1346. after the meeting

  1347. in the palace

  1348. we get a wonderful

  1349. little closing scene

  1350. in verses 11

  1351. and 12

  1352. of chapter 47

  1353. Joseph settled

  1354. his father

  1355. and his brothers

  1356. in Egypt

  1357. and gave them

  1358. property

  1359. in the best

  1360. part of the land

  1361. the district

  1362. of Ramesses

  1363. as Pharaoh

  1364. directed

  1365. Joseph also

  1366. provided his

  1367. father and his

  1368. brothers

  1369. and all his

  1370. father's

  1371. household

  1372. with food

  1373. according

  1374. to their

  1375. number

  1376. to the number

  1377. of their

  1378. children

  1379. God has

  1380. been preparing

  1381. the way

  1382. God has

  1383. been providing

  1384. for this

  1385. family

  1386. God is

  1387. keeping

  1388. his promise

  1389. to this

  1390. family

  1391. reuniting

  1392. them

  1393. and then

  1394. looking

  1395. after them

  1396. because this

  1397. is the God

  1398. who makes

  1399. promises

  1400. and when God

  1401. makes a promise

  1402. he always

  1403. keeps it

  1404. so we have

  1405. this wonderful

  1406. reunion

  1407. that takes

  1408. place between

  1409. Joseph

  1410. and his

  1411. father

  1412. and the

  1413. brothers

  1414. and they're

  1415. now living

  1416. together

  1417. in the best

  1418. of the land

  1419. in Egypt

  1420. beyond sin

  1421. beyond the

  1422. attempt

  1423. of destroying

  1424. the family

  1425. there is

  1426. reunion

  1427. or

  1428. reconciliation

  1429. to use

  1430. a word

  1431. that the

  1432. Bible

  1433. likes to

  1434. use

  1435. to speak

  1436. of salvation

  1437. when it

  1438. talks of

  1439. Jesus

  1440. work to

  1441. save us

  1442. it talks

  1443. about

  1444. reconciling

  1445. us

  1446. to God

  1447. there is

  1448. a breakdown

  1449. in the

  1450. relationship

  1451. between us

  1452. as people

  1453. and God

  1454. and the

  1455. break is

  1456. not on

  1457. God's

  1458. side

  1459. it's

  1460. on ours

  1461. because

  1462. of our

  1463. sin

  1464. that perfect

  1465. loving

  1466. relationship

  1467. that you

  1468. and I

  1469. were made

  1470. for

  1471. that joy

  1472. that we

  1473. were made

  1474. for

  1475. is broken

  1476. because of

  1477. sin

  1478. but then

  1479. restored

  1480. by the

  1481. work of

  1482. Jesus

  1483. Jesus

  1484. is the

  1485. son

  1486. who takes

  1487. our

  1488. place

  1489. to secure

  1490. our

  1491. peace

  1492. we see

  1493. Jesus

  1494. on the

  1495. cross

  1496. being

  1497. forsaken

  1498. by his

  1499. father

  1500. as he

  1501. willingly

  1502. and lovingly

  1503. carries on

  1504. himself

  1505. the sin

  1506. of the

  1507. world

  1508. so that

  1509. we might

  1510. be

  1511. adopted

  1512. into the

  1513. family

  1514. of God

  1515. welcomed

  1516. into God's

  1517. family

  1518. because

  1519. of Jesus

  1520. it's

  1521. through the

  1522. punishment

  1523. of Jesus

  1524. that we

  1525. have peace

  1526. the cross

  1527. stands at

  1528. the very

  1529. heart

  1530. of the

  1531. good news

  1532. of the

  1533. Bible

  1534. Jesus

  1535. the night

  1536. of his

  1537. arrest

  1538. and the

  1539. night before

  1540. his death

  1541. in John

    John 14 chapter mention

  1542. chapter 14

  1543. spoke

  1544. words of

  1545. comfort

  1546. that speak

  1547. of

  1548. reunion

  1549. he said

  1550. in my

  1551. father's

  1552. house

  1553. are many

  1554. rooms

  1555. and he

  1556. said

  1557. I'm going

  1558. there to

  1559. prepare a

  1560. place for

  1561. you

  1562. and if I

  1563. go and

  1564. prepare a

  1565. place I

  1566. will certainly

  1567. come back

  1568. and take

  1569. you to be

  1570. with me

  1571. that where

  1572. I am

  1573. you also

  1574. will be

  1575. when our

  1576. trust is

  1577. in Jesus

  1578. we have a

  1579. wonderful

  1580. reconciliation

  1581. that takes

  1582. place now

  1583. the barrier

  1584. of sin

  1585. is broken

  1586. because Jesus

  1587. has paid the

  1588. penalty for

  1589. that sin

  1590. but we also

  1591. have the

  1592. promise of

  1593. an eternal

  1594. reunion

  1595. of seeing

  1596. Jesus

  1597. face to

  1598. face

  1599. of being

  1600. made

  1601. like him

  1602. to enjoy

  1603. perfect love

  1604. and joy

  1605. and peace

  1606. forever

  1607. reconciliation

  1608. and reunion

  1609. that lasts

  1610. beyond death

  1611. and into

  1612. eternity

  1613. and we get

  1614. there

  1615. through trusting

  1616. in Jesus

  1617. the son of

  1618. God

  1619. who's become

  1620. our savior

  1621. I wonder

  1622. as we

  1623. close

  1624. what place

  1625. does God's

  1626. grace have

  1627. in your

  1628. story

  1629. when you

  1630. reflect on

  1631. your own

  1632. life up

  1633. till now

  1634. your family

  1635. life

  1636. what part

  1637. does God's

  1638. grace have

  1639. in that story

  1640. remember

  1641. our psychologist

  1642. Mary Piper

  1643. if you don't

  1644. know your

  1645. history

  1646. if you don't

  1647. know your

  1648. family

  1649. who are you

  1650. there is a

  1651. very real

  1652. danger for

  1653. us in a

  1654. church

  1655. of spiritual

  1656. amnesia

  1657. that we can

  1658. forget our

  1659. identity

  1660. that we can

  1661. forget that we

  1662. belong in

  1663. God's family

  1664. if we're trusting

  1665. in Jesus

  1666. we can forget

  1667. that we are

  1668. secure

  1669. we have a new

  1670. citizenship

  1671. we have a new

  1672. family

  1673. that we have

  1674. been brought

  1675. into

  1676. and you know

1677. this is one of the

  1678. reasons why you

  1679. and I need

  1680. the church

  1681. because when we

  1682. gather every week

  1683. we are gathering

  1684. to remember

  1685. whose we are

  1686. that we worship

  1687. God as our

  1688. father in heaven

  1689. as our creator

  1690. as our king

  1691. as our lord

  1692. we gather to

  1693. remember how

  1694. we got here

  1695. how do we become

  1696. part of the

  1697. people of God

  1698. we remember

  1699. the loving

  1700. sacrifice of

  1701. Jesus that

  1702. unites us to

  1703. God and unites

  1704. us to each

  1705. other

  1706. and we gather

  1707. and we need

  1708. the church

  1709. because it

  1710. reminds us why

  1711. the gospel

  1712. the good news

  1713. of Jesus

  1714. matters so

  1715. much

  1716. to remind

  1717. ourselves of

  1718. forgiveness that's

  1719. only found in

  1720. him

  1721. new life that's

  1722. only found

  1723. through him

  1724. the promise

  1725. of a new

  1726. heaven and

  1727. earth in

  1728. him

  1729. so like

  1730. Moses

  1731. point yourself

  1732. and point others

  1733. back to God's

  1734. salvation

  1735. reflect back

  1736. on your story

  1737. reflect back

  1738. on the story

  1739. of Jesus

  1740. to see God's

  1741. grace

  1742. to see his

  1743. promises

  1744. kept

  1745. to see the

  1746. favor you

  1747. and I

  1748. enjoy

  1749. from him

  1750. make the

  1751. gospel

  1752. make Jesus

  1753. central

  1754. to your

  1755. story

  1756. to your story
