  1. I believe one holy, Catholic, and apostolic Church.

  2. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins,

  3. and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.

  4. Amen.

  5. I invite you just to remain standing and bow your heads in prayer.

  6. Father, sometimes things in your word frighten us.

  7. And Father, sometimes when things in your word frighten us,

  8. it goes against our flesh, it goes against how the world thinks,

  9. it goes against how our culture thinks, it goes against what we want to do.

  10. And so, Father, it's very easy for us to almost be like the serpent and say,

  11. did you really say this, Father, and to turn away from it?

  12. Father, we thank you that you love us.

  13. We thank you that you sent your Son to die upon the cross.

  14. We thank you, Father, that your Son in his death upon the cross

  15. and in his resurrection that he has done everything that needed to be done

  16. so that we could be reconciled to you,

  17. and that we receive this purely and only and utterly and completely by faith,

  18. that we can add nothing to the finished work of your Son.

  19. Father, grip us with the gospel so that as we read your word,

  20. we will not be afraid,

  21. but that we will be willing to repent,

  22. to learn, to grow,

  23. and to hold fast to your word

  24. as we hold fast to you.

  25. Father, do this work in our lives,

  26. and we ask this in the name of Jesus,

  27. your Son and our Savior.

  28. Amen.

  29. Please be seated.

  30. So I don't know how closely you were listening while Amanda read,

  31. but you might be saying,

  32. George, did the Bible just say that God causes famine,

  33. God causes drought,

  34. God causes crops to fail,

  35. God causes disease,

  36. God causes plague,

  37. God causes violent death.

  38. Is that what...

  39. I was only sort of half listening, George.

  40. Is that what Amos 4 says?

  41. Is that what Amanda just read for us?

  42. If that's what it says,

  43. it touches a really, really, really deep fear in most of our hearts.

  44. And we want to turn away from it.

  45. And it's in fact one of the deep fears

  46. that many people in our culture have.

  47. In fact, you know,

  48. I've noticed increasingly in Hollywood and in paper

  49. that when they talk about something being really disastrous,

  50. they say it's going to be of biblical proportions.

  51. It's the only time they refer to the Bible

  52. when something's going to go really,

  53. really, really massively badly wrong.

  54. It's just sort of the way we assume that the Bible is what it says.

  55. Is that what the Bible's saying?

  56. Is that, George, is it...

  57. That's a bit worrisome.

  58. So let's look.

  59. If you have your Bibles,

  60. and if you don't, once again,

  61. there's still some copies up there.

  62. You're welcome to take one.

  63. Turn to the book of Amos, chapter 4.

    Amos 4 chapter mention

  64. And if you're a guest here this morning,

  65. one of the things we do at Church of the Messiah

  66. is we preach through books of the Bible.

  67. I try to make sure that every year we have at least one series,

  68. one book in the Bible from the Old Testament at least,

  69. because it's important for us to be able to read

  70. those parts of God's Word as well.

  71. And anyway, so we're going through the book of Amos this summer.

  72. We'll end it on Labor Day Sunday, God's willing,

  73. and then we'll move on to 2 Corinthians.

  74. That will be the next book that we'll be preaching through.

  75. So let's turn to it.

  76. And the book, Amos,

  77. that has this worrisome thing about Amos 4,

  78. whether God's causing famine and plague and pestilence.

  79. Actually, we all know that during the last election,

  80. we all know that the conservatives caused all those things.

  81. Sorry, never mind.

  82. That was a bad joke.

  83. Anyway,

  84. just like whoever wins in the election down there,

  85. it's the people who lost.

  86. It's that party that causes it.

  87. Anyway, never mind.

  88. But the text is saying something really terrible.

  89. But what begins actually with something that's a bit reassuring to us,

  90. which is that God is completely and utterly opposed to robbery

  91. and to oppressing the poor.

  92. So Amos 4, verse 1,

    Amos 4:1

  93. this is how, actually, we'll read 1 to 5.

  94. It begins with something comforting,

  95. but actually then goes on to do something which is deeply countercultural.

  96. And not only deeply countercultural,

  97. but actually quite surprising to many people, I think,

  98. who are outside of the Christian faith,

  99. what they think that Christians would think about things.

  100. Because it pairs two things together

  101. that we don't always recognize that the Bible is against equally.

  102. Actually, Andrew, why don't you put up my first point,

  103. if you could do that?

  104. What we're going to see in this very first thing,

  105. it's a bit surprising,

  106. but that the non-religious,

  107. the irreligious,

  108. the religious,

  109. and the spiritual,

  110. you know, the people who are spiritual, not religious,

  111. each are hardening their hearts to God.

  112. Each are hardening their hearts to God.

  113. It's not as if the Bible is going to tell us

  114. that we have to turn from capitalism

  115. to embrace some type of spirituality,

  116. which is what our culture would say.

  117. Let's look at the text.

  118. Verse 1 of Amos 4.

  119. Hear this word,

  120. you cows of Bashan.

  121. Cows of Bashan were plump.

  122. They were highly prized because they were plump.

  123. They were very well cared for and very well fed,

  124. and they could command a higher price.

  125. Hear this word,

  126. you cows of Bashan,

  127. who are on the mountains of Samaria,

  128. who oppress the poor,

  129. who crush the needy,

  130. who say to your husbands,

  131. bring that we may drink.

  132. The Lord God has sworn by his holiness

  133. that behold,

  134. the days are coming upon you

  135. when they shall take you away with hooks,

  136. even the last of you with fish hooks.

  137. And you shall go out through the breaches,

  138. each one straight ahead,

  139. and you shall be cast out into Harmon,

  140. declares the Lord.

  141. Just before reading further,

  142. it's an image of complete judgment,

  143. and they'll be taken to a place of judgment

  144. and losing everything,

  145. completely and utterly losing everything.

  146. And it will be a completely straight, unheeded way.

  147. There's no wall stopping at nothing.

  148. They're just completely and utterly taken

  149. to having all that they have

  150. and all that they trust

  151. and all that they possess,

  152. all of their wealth,

  153. all of their power, positions, privilege,

  154. completely and utterly removed

  155. in a very straightforward manner.

  156. That's the basic message of the text.

  157. As Canadians, we like the first part

  158. about oppressing.

  159. It's wrong to oppress

  160. and to take away things from the needy.

  161. The last part we find troubling.

  162. Let's go on to verse four.

  163. Come to Bethel.

  164. Bethel and Gilgal are two important places,

  165. religious centers or spiritual centers.

  166. And it would have been,

  167. both of them would have been places

  168. where there were both something

  169. that looked very much like traditional Jewish worship,

  170. hence it would look religious.

  171. And there would have been something

  172. that also would have looked

  173. far more like spiritual, not religious.

  174. To put it in like a modern place,

  175. it would be a place

  176. where right beside a cathedral,

  177. there would be a coven.

  178. Right beside a place

  179. where there's a jazz vespers,

  180. there's also going to be a place

  181. where people are dancing

  182. to call down the moon.

  183. And right beside the place

  184. where they would maybe be having

  185. a very, very traditional sounding worship

  186. and stuff that from the outside

  187. looks like a choir or a praise band.

  188. And right beside that,

  189. there would be people

  190. all meditating together,

  191. trying to get in touch

  192. with their more spiritual self.

  193. And it's describing,

  194. well, it's describing Ottawa.

  195. But they use the word Bethel and Gilgal.

  196. Come to Bethel and transgress,

  197. verse four to Gilgal,

  198. and multiply transgression.

  199. Do you notice that?

  200. To come to a place like this

  201. is to come not to something

  202. that the Bible's going to approve of.

  203. It doesn't approve of religion

  204. or spirituality.

  205. It sees it that to be involved

  206. in these things

  207. is actually increasing

  208. your rebellion against God.

  209. The mosque and the cathedral

  210. and the coven

  211. and the temple

  212. and the synagogue.

  213. Come to Bethel and transgress

  214. to Gilgal

  215. and multiply transgression

  216. or rebellion.

  217. Some of your versions

  218. might say rebellion.

  219. Bring your sacrifices

  220. every morning,

  221. your tithes,

  222. every three days.

  223. Offer a sacrifice

  224. of thanksgiving

  225. of that which is leavened

  226. and proclaim free will offerings.

  227. Publish them.

  228. For so you love to do,

  229. O people of Israel,

  230. declares the Lord.

  231. So it's a very, very surprising text.

  232. Because in fact,

  233. as you know,

  234. like Eat, Pray, Love,

  235. you can think of lots of things

  236. in the culture

  237. and in movies and all.

  238. There's this picture

  239. that you get away from capitalism.

  240. You get away from the rat race

  241. and then maybe you go

  242. and you learn how to meditate

  243. and you learn how to eat

  244. really good food

  245. and you travel

  246. and all that type of stuff

  247. as well as if everybody's

  248. really upper middle class

  249. and rich.

  250. But sorry,

  251. that wasn't what I meant to say.

  252. The point is that Hollywood

  253. will portray that the option

  254. to capitalism

  255. is more like Walden Pond.

  256. It's a simple life.

  257. It's a spiritual life.

  258. It's getting in touch with things.

  259. They probably wouldn't say

  260. that you'd go to a Catholic church

  261. for a mass

  262. or a church like ours,

  263. but you get this idea.

  264. But the first thing

  265. is to see that the Bible

  266. rejects that.

  267. That's not the direction

  268. God wants you to go.

  269. And the other thing is just,

  270. and this is a really important thing

  271. for us,

  272. is that when it talks about

  273. the oppression of the poor

  274. in verse 1

  275. and it talks about

  276. the crushing of the needy,

  277. to think that it's referring

  278. to capitalism only

  279. is a grave mistake.

  280. It's talking about bureaucrats

  281. and socialist czars as well.

  282. To think that governments

  283. don't for their own purposes

  284. crush their people

  285. is a way to allow

  286. the elite in our culture

  287. to not recognize

  288. not only what goes on

  289. in our own culture,

  290. but makes it that we don't

  291. actually hear the Bible.

  292. Amos chapter 4, verse 1

    Amos 4:1

  293. is not a socialist rant

  294. against capitalism,

  295. nor is it a capitalist rant

  296. against socialism.

  297. It's saying that,

  298. you know what it's saying?

  299. It's contrasting two people,

  300. two types of people.

  301. It's contrasting the people

  302. who are basically,

  303. you know,

  304. whether you go on Dragon's Den

  305. or some of those other places

  306. and they say,

  307. you know, frankly,

  308. I don't care about

  309. all these things.

  310. You know, basically,

  311. I just want to make some money

  312. and at the end of the day,

  313. after I've made some money,

  314. I just want to be able

  315. to have a drink.

  316. And, you know,

  317. basically, I think that

  318. you want to meditate,

  319. you want to go pray

  320. or sing praise songs.

  321. I think that is

  322. unbelievably boring

  323. and that a glass of Jack

  324. while watching TV,

  325. while watching some sports

  326. is infinitely more relaxing

  327. and they're completely

  328. and utterly irreligious

  329. and the Bible says

  330. they're going to be judged.

  331. And the people who go

  332. to the cathedrals

  333. and jazz vespers

  334. and covens

  335. and mosques

  336. and synagogues,

  337. they're also going

  338. to be judged.

  339. I mean,

  340. this is a surprising thing

  341. in our culture

  342. and we in churches

  343. often talk

  344. purely and utterly

  345. as if it's those

  346. more capitalist

  347. or worldly sins

  348. that the Bible condemns.

  349. But here,

  350. the Bible pairs them

  351. together.

  352. Pairs them together.

  353. The non-religious,

  354. the irreligious,

  355. the religious,

  356. and the spiritual,

  357. each are hardening,

  358. their hearts

  359. to God.

  360. In fact,

  361. this text,

  362. you know,

  363. one of the things

  364. that we say

  365. sort of in our culture

  366. is that there's

  367. many,

  368. many different paths

  369. to God.

  370. And actually,

  371. I think the Bible

  372. would say

  373. that that's

  374. completely wrong.

  375. The Bible would say

  376. that there's

  377. many different paths

  378. to hardening

  379. your heart

  380. to God.

  381. There's not

  382. many paths

  383. to God,

  384. just many paths

  385. to hardening

  386. your heart

  387. to God.

  388. For some,

  389. it's making money

  390. and drinking jack

  391. and for others,

  392. it's being

  393. deeply spiritual.

  394. Now,

  395. some of you

  396. might be saying,

  397. George,

  398. that is

  399. one of the most

  400. hard-hearted,

  401. judgmental rants

  402. I've heard

  403. in a long time.

  404. No wonder people

  405. don't want to

  406. come to church.

  407. Don't you think

  408. that's hard-hearted

  409. and judgmental?

  410. And,

  411. don't you think that?

  412. And,

  413. I mean,

  414. I'd have to say

  415. that it's very,

  416. I don't think

  417. I was being hard-hearted

  418. and saying,

  419. I was just trying

  420. to bring out

  421. the Bible,

  422. but I do want

  423. to acknowledge

  424. that it's very,

  425. very easy for us

  426. to read texts

  427. like this in a way

  428. that are very hard-hearted

  429. and judgmental.

  430. It's easy for me

  431. to do it.

  432. It's one of the reasons

  433. why the rest of this text

  434. is very,

  435. very important

  436. and that we need

  437. to call out

  438. to the Father

  439. to never have

  440. our hearts hardened

  441. even as we read

  442. the Bible.

  443. You see,

  444. one of the things

  445. which is condemned

  446. in verses 4 and 5

  447. about religion

  448. and spirituality

  449. is that it's religion

  450. and spirituality

  451. that we declare

  452. for ourselves.

  453. We make up

  454. for ourselves.

  455. We set the rules.

  456. We do it

  457. for our own purposes

  458. and for our own

  459. advancement.

  460. for our own exalting.

  461. And it's easy

  462. for us to slip

  463. into doing this

  464. even when we're

  465. reading the Bible,

  466. even when we're

  467. doing things

  468. we think in a way

  469. that's obedient to God.

  470. But it's very easy

  471. for us to slip

  472. into having everything

  473. be around ourselves.

  474. One of the things

  475. I struggled with

  476. last week

  477. was I actually

  478. thought my sermon

  479. last Sunday

  480. was one of the

  481. worst sermons

  482. I've done

  483. in a long time.

  484. I know some of you

  485. are shocked.

  486. You were here

  487. last Sunday

  488. and you thought,

  489. George,

  490. that wasn't even

  491. in your top ten

  492. of your worst sermons

  493. in the last year.

  494. Boy,

  495. you've really

  496. been missing the boat.

  497. But I,

  498. you know,

  499. I really struggled

  500. for several days

  501. throughout the week

  502. because I thought

  503. I had done

  504. such a poor job.

  505. and then the Holy Spirit

  506. slowly but persistently

  507. had to do a work

  508. in my life

  509. because why is it

  510. about me?

  511. Like,

  512. I didn't see anything

  513. unorthodox

  514. and I tried to explain

  515. the Bible

  516. and I don't think

  517. I did a good job

  518. and then I felt

  519. really bad

  520. and the reason

  521. I felt really bad

  522. is I thought

  523. it was about

  524. my performance

  525. that I thought

  526. it rested

  527. on my shoulders

  528. that I had to do

  529. things in a different

  530. way so that

  531. by my efforts

  532. things would go better

  533. and you know what?

  534. All of a sudden

  535. I've moved into

  536. an area of

  537. self-declared,

  538. self-centered,

  539. self-organized,

  540. self-structured

  541. understanding of religion.

  542. So I don't want you

  543. to hear this text

  544. and I definitely,

  545. especially God,

  546. really worked

  547. in my life.

  548. Sorry if you had to

  549. sit through a bad sermon

  550. last week

  551. but God

  552. really worked

  553. in my life

  554. in preparation

  555. for Amos 4

  556. to help me

  557. realize

  558. just how easy

  559. it is

  560. for us to take

  561. even good things

  562. that are really

  563. literally coming

  564. from God

  565. and turn it

  566. in a subtle

  567. twisted fallen way

  568. into something

  569. which is hardening

  570. my heart to God.

  571. But the rest

  572. of the text,

  573. in fact,

  574. the text that

  575. really worries us

  576. is in fact

  577. the way

  578. into a deeper

  579. comfort and

  580. confidence

  581. confidence

  582. with God.

  583. So

  584. the hard

  585. drinking,

  586. money-making

  587. or bureaucratic

  588. control

  589. person,

  590. that's the first

  591. thing and then

  592. the religious

  593. and the spiritual

  594. and then we get

  595. into this very

  596. hard part

  597. in verse 6.

  598. I gave you

  599. cleanness of teeth

  600. in all your cities.

  601. By the way,

  602. in the Hebrew

  603. the I

  604. is emphatic.

  605. So if we were

  606. to almost be

  607. re-editing this

  608. we'd bold it.

  609. We'd bold it

  610. and maybe even

  611. underline it.

  612. I gave

  613. you cleanness

  614. of teeth.

  615. It's an image

  616. of famine.

  617. Cleanness of teeth

  618. in all your cities

  619. and lack of bread

  620. in all your places

  621. yet you did not

  622. return to me

  623. declares the Lord.

  624. And we're just

  625. going to pause

  626. there for a second.

  627. And some of you

  628. maybe are going

  629. to think to yourself

  630. is this

  631. now, George,

  632. where you tell us

  633. that in the original

  634. language it's not

  635. as bad as it sounds.

  636. Well, I looked

  637. at two academic,

  638. three academic

  639. commentaries this week

  640. and I can tell you

  641. it's translated

  642. the Hebrew

  643. very accurately.

  644. It's translated

  645. the Hebrew

  646. very accurately.

  647. In fact,

  648. the Hebrew

  649. as I just mentioned

  650. actually makes it

  651. more,

  652. for us Canadians

  653. it makes it

  654. actually harder

  655. because all the way

  656. through

  657. every one of the

  658. eyes

  659. of the five

  660. sections

  661. is emphatic

  662. in Hebrew.

  663. Actually,

  664. maybe

  665. and so

  666. when it says

  667. about God

  668. causing famine

  669. that's actually

  670. what it says

  671. and I'm not

  672. going to actually

  673. try to explain it

  674. away.

  675. Maybe before I read

  676. any further,

  677. Andrew,

  678. could you put up

  679. the next point

  680. or Rebecca,

  681. could you put up

  682. the next point?

  683. In the hope

  684. that people

  685. will return

  686. to him,

  687. God does

  688. at times

  689. bring disaster.

  690. That's what

  691. the text says.

  692. I'm not going

  693. to spend time

  694. about all of

  695. the different

  696. ways that God

  697. interreacts

  698. to his created

  699. order and

  700. know that those

  701. of you who sat

  702. through my

  703. Revelation series

  704. and when we

  705. went through

  706. Romans,

  707. you know that

  708. there's sometimes

  709. God just allows

  710. things and

  711. etc.

  712. etc.

  713. There's a range

  714. of different

  715. options here

  716. and you can

  717. read big

  718. complicated books

  719. on it but

  720. the fact of

  721. the matter is

  722. that this text

  723. does tell you

  724. just how I think

  725. I've summarized it

  726. in the hope

  727. that people

  728. will return to

  729. him.

  730. God does

  731. at times

  732. bring disaster

  733. but the refrain

  734. is important.

  735. Let's read

  736. verses 6 to 11

  737. and I'll read

  738. verse 6 again.

  739. I gave you,

  740. this is God

  741. speaking,

  742. cleanness of teeth

  743. in all your cities

  744. and lack of bread

  745. in all your places

  746. yet you did not

  747. return to me

  748. declares the Lord.

  749. I also withheld

  750. the rain from you

  751. when there were

  752. yet three months

  753. to the harvest.

  754. I would send

  755. rain on one city

  756. and send no rain

  757. on another city.

  758. One field

  759. would have rain

  760. and the field

  761. on which it did

  762. not rain

  763. would wither

  764. so two or three

  765. cities would wander

  766. to another city

  767. to drink water

  768. and would not

  769. be satisfied.

  770. Yet you did not

  771. return to me

  772. declares the Lord.

  773. I struck you

  774. with blight

  775. and mildew

  776. with your many

  777. gardens

  778. and your vineyards

  779. your fig trees

  780. and your olive trees

  781. the locusts devoured.

  782. Yet you did not

  783. return to me

  784. declares the Lord.

  785. I sent among you

  786. a pestilence

  787. after the manner

  788. of Egypt.

  789. I killed your young

  790. men with the sword

  791. and carried away

  792. your horses

  793. and I made the stench

  794. of your camp

  795. go up into your nostrils.

  796. Yet you did not

  797. return to me

  798. declares the Lord.

  799. I overthrew

  800. some of you

  801. as when God

  802. overthrew Sodom

  803. and Gomorrah

  804. and you were

  805. as a brand

  806. a piece of wood

  807. plucked out

  808. of the burning.

  809. Yet you did not

  810. return to me

  811. declares the Lord.

  812. You know this

  813. isn't completely

  814. you know

  815. I'm not

  816. I mean for some of us

  817. this is not even

  818. remotely abstract.

  819. Some of you

  820. are dealing

  821. with maybe

  822. really serious

  823. illnesses

  824. or serious

  825. financial disasters.

  826. I know that

  827. there's a

  828. people in this

  829. congregation

  830. who have survived

  831. attempts at genocide.

  832. People who are

  833. going to murder them.

  834. I mean it's a very

  835. very small thing

  836. but my daughter

  837. Victoria

  838. her husband

  839. was in a

  840. multiple car accident

  841. this week

  842. on the Queensway

  843. and suffered a

  844. concussion

  845. amongst other things

  846. as car was totaled.

  847. And that

  848. just happened

  849. this week.

  850. In fact I didn't

  851. know about it

  852. I was going to go

  853. I'd been working

  854. in a West End

  855. coffee shop

  856. and I went to get

  857. on the Queensway

  858. and it was backed

  859. up forever

  860. and it must have

  861. been just a few

  862. minutes after the

  863. accident

  864. and I got off

  865. the Queensway

  866. and went around

  867. it and found

  868. out later on

  869. that Sean

  870. had been in

  871. the accident.

  872. So it's not

  873. abstract

  874. is it for us?

  875. So I just want

  876. to say a couple

  877. of things about it.

  878. The first thing

  879. that I want to

  880. say about it

  881. is that this

  882. fact that God

  883. does things

  884. sometimes that

  885. are disasters

  886. to bring people

  887. back to himself

  888. it's the flip

  889. side the exact

  890. same doctrine

  891. that we in

  892. other contexts

  893. we place so

  894. much hope in.

  895. Like later on

  896. in the service

  897. we're going to

  898. pray for sick

  899. people.

  900. Why do we

  901. pray for sick

  902. people?

  903. Because we

  904. believe that God

  905. can sometimes

  906. heal people

  907. slowly by

  908. apparently natural

  909. means.

  910. Sometimes he

  911. will heal people

  912. through drugs

  913. and medication.

  914. Sometimes he'll

  915. heal people

  916. instantly through

  917. prayer.

  918. There are many

  919. people here in

  920. this congregation

  921. who could probably

  922. tell you stories

  923. either in their

  924. own lives or in

  925. lives of people

  926. that are close

  927. to them of God

  928. acting in quite

  929. remarkable and

  930. miraculous ways to

  931. bring healing.

  932. people.

  933. And you know

  934. one of the most

  935. precious doctrines

  936. for the Christian

  937. is the doctrine

  938. of eternal

  939. security.

  940. The doctrine

  941. that when you

  942. put your faith

  943. and trust in

  944. Jesus, when you

  945. reach your hand

  946. up to Jesus

  947. and realize that

  948. he is God's

  949. provision, that

  950. God sent his

  951. son to die upon

  952. the cross and

  953. rise from the

  954. dead to be the

  955. means by which

  956. human beings

  957. could be

  958. reconciled to

  959. him and that

  960. when we reached

  961. out to Jesus

  962. in a sense we

  963. can't reach Jesus

  964. but that it is

  965. his heart to

  966. reach down to

  967. us and to

  968. take our hand

  969. in his and

  970. that when he

  971. takes our hand

  972. in his because

  973. we have put

  974. our, we want

  975. to, we're

  976. trusting him to

  977. do what only

  978. God can do

  979. which is to

  980. reconcile us to

  981. him and that

  982. when Jesus takes

  983. us by that hand

  984. he will never

  985. let us go.

  986. He will never

  987. let us go.

  988. And what is

  989. part of the

  990. ground of that

  991. security is that

  992. God is sovereign.

  993. That God knows

  994. all of the

  995. events in the

  996. future.

  997. That there's

  998. not going to

  999. be an event

  1000. in the future

  1001. that will mean

  1002. oh dang it I

  1003. let go of

  1004. George as he

  1005. falls.

  1006. That that just

  1007. won't happen

  1008. because God is

  1009. sovereign and

  1010. he'll never let

  1011. you go.

  1012. Jesus will never

  1013. let you go.

  1014. You know the

  1015. basis of

  1016. prophecy that we

  1017. believe that Jesus

  1018. will return.

  1019. We can believe

  1020. that Jesus will

  1021. return because he

  1022. defeated death and

  1023. he rose from the

  1024. dead and he

  1025. ascended into

  1026. heaven and he's

  1027. going to come

  1028. back and we can

  1029. trust that he's

  1030. going to do that.

  1031. Why?

  1032. Because God is

  1033. sovereign and

  1034. all powerful and

  1035. we can trust him.

  1036. But the same God

  1037. who can act in

  1038. such a way that I

  1039. will never be let

  1040. go.

  1041. The same God who

1042. can act in such a

  1043. way that we can

  1044. pray for rain or

  1045. that we can pray

  1046. for healing.

1047. That is a God who

  1048. can heal who can

  1049. do those things.

  1050. And it also means

1051. that he is a God

  1052. who for his own

  1053. sovereign purposes

  1054. who only desires

  1055. that his fallen

  1056. creation and

  1057. creatures would

  1058. return to him

  1059. might sometimes

  1060. also do things

  1061. like cause famine

  1062. in the hope that

  1063. people will return

  1064. to him.

  1065. For me to deny

  1066. this text would

  1067. be to deny that

  1068. we can pray.

  1069. It would be to

  1070. deny that we can

  1071. have eternal

  1072. security.

  1073. It would be to

  1074. deny that we can

  1075. have any hope.

  1076. You can't have

  1077. one without the

  1078. other.

  1079. You can't have

  1080. one without the

  1081. other.

  1082. But there's

  1083. something else as

  1084. well.

  1085. And by the way,

1086. this is one of the

  1087. things here.

  1088. This, you know,

  1089. if you read, for

  1090. those of you who

  1091. come to faith in

  1092. Jesus and you

  1093. start to read the

  1094. Bible, every

  1095. Christian at

  1096. different times in

  1097. their life, they're

  1098. going to have to

  1099. make a decision.

  1100. will I trust the

  1101. Bible and want

  1102. to have my mind

  1103. conformed to the

  1104. Bible?

  1105. Or will I do

  1106. this?

  1107. For many of us,

  1108. this is one of

  1109. those times.

1110. But I want to say

  1111. something else about

  1112. this text.

1113. If you could put up

  1114. the next point,

  1115. Rebecca, please.

  1116. It is only because

  1117. God is sovereign

  1118. and all-powerful that

  1119. human beings have

  1120. freedom and hope.

  1121. It is only because

  1122. God is sovereign,

  1123. that means he rules

  1124. and has authority,

  1125. and he's all-powerful

  1126. that human beings have

  1127. freedom and hope.

  1128. Just this, a few

  1129. months ago, our

  1130. church, people from

  1131. our church joined up

  1132. with a few other

  1133. people as well,

  1134. and the Dig and

  1135. Delve Apologetics

  1136. organization to

  1137. sponsor a conversation,

  1138. a dialogue between

  1139. Aus Guinness.

  1140. We worked with the

  1141. main atheist

  1142. organization in

  1143. Ottawa, and they

  1144. picked a person to

  1145. speak, and we got

  1146. Aus Guinness.

  1147. It actually happened

  1148. to be right here.

  1149. They sat down.

  1150. Some of you were

1151. here for it and had

  1152. a conversation.

  1153. He is a philosophy

  1154. professor from the

  1155. University of Toronto,

1156. and Aus Guinness is a

  1157. D. Phil from Oxford,

  1158. well-published speaker,

1159. and if you go dig and

  1160. delve and you Google

  1161. it, Aus Guinness, in

  1162. this debate here in

  1163. Ottawa, you'll see

  1164. something very, very,

  1165. very remarkable.

  1166. The debate, the

  1167. conversation was over

  1168. whether you can have

  1169. meaning in life without

  1170. God.

1171. And I think for many,

  1172. many people who were

  1173. there, the shocking

1174. thing for us was how

  1175. weak the atheist case

  1176. was.

1177. And one of the many

  1178. shocking things is that

  1179. he actually wasn't able

1180. to say whether we have

  1181. any freedom from an

  1182. atheist perspective.

1183. If you don't believe me,

  1184. go looking for it.

  1185. Dig and delve.

1186. If you can't find it

  1187. easily, email the office

1188. or email me this week.

  1189. No, I'm going on

  1190. holidays soon.

  1191. Anyway, just, we'll

1192. let you, we'll find it

  1193. for you somehow.

  1194. Somebody will check it,

  1195. we'll send it about,

  1196. but you Google it.

  1197. So here's the thing

  1198. about all of this.

1199. This is a very, very

  1200. shocking truth.

  1201. It's a very hard truth.

1202. But one of the things

1203. is many people, when they

  1204. think about this truth,

  1205. they just think about

1206. this idea that God can

  1207. cause these terrible

  1208. things, and they don't

  1209. like it.

1210. They don't like the idea

  1211. of God being sovereign.

1212. They don't like the idea

  1213. that human freedom,

  1214. here's the thing, every

  1215. system of, there's no

  1216. neutral place.

  1217. Every system of thought

1218. has to come to term

1219. with the fact that on

1220. one hand we seem to

  1221. have human freedom, and

1222. on the other hand there

  1223. seems to be causality.

  1224. Every system of thought.

1225. And so it isn't as if

  1226. somebody might say,

  1227. this is terrible, I'm

  1228. going to reject this,

  1229. this is completely and

  1230. utterly a horrible thing.

  1231. Well, one moment, how

  1232. do Muslims deal with

  1233. it?

  1234. How do Buddhists deal

  1235. with it?

  1236. How do Hindus deal

  1237. with it?

  1238. How do atheists deal

  1239. with it?

1240. And I want to tell you

1241. this, I want to challenge

1242. you and say, if you're

  1243. there horrified at this,

1244. that if you end up

  1245. looking at Muslim

  1246. thought, and you look

  1247. at Hindu and Buddhist

  1248. thought, and you look

  1249. at atheist thought and

  1250. secular thought on this,

  1251. you will end up

  1252. thinking, you know

  1253. what?

  1254. The Bible makes the

  1255. most sense.

  1256. because, you know,

  1257. you think about it

  1258. from a fundamental

  1259. secular point of view

  1260. that everything is just

  1261. a result of causality.

  1262. Then really, if you're

1263. on a mountain and an

  1264. avalanche starts to come

1265. towards you, you have a

  1266. perfect image of human

  1267. life.

1268. And if an avalanche is

  1269. coming towards you, you

1270. have no freedom and you

  1271. have no hope.

1272. But if it's God who is

1273. using a hard time in

1274. your life, you can call

1275. out to him for mercy.

1276. Or you can call out to

1277. him and know that he will

1278. be with you in the midst

1279. of that really hard time.

1280. You see, it goes beyond

  1281. this sermon.

  1282. Sometimes when very hard

  1283. times come, maybe it

  1284. is something that God

  1285. is specifically doing

1286. and we have to call

  1287. out to him.

1288. Maybe he is trying to

  1289. get our attention because

1290. we have to repent or we

1291. have to return to him.

  1292. Maybe it's something

  1293. that is just something

1294. that we're going to have

  1295. to endure because our

1296. enduring will endure in a

  1297. way that brings him

  1298. glory.

  1299. I mean, I just think,

  1300. again, I've mentioned

  1301. her many, many, many

1302. times that in my early

  1303. ministry, one of the

  1304. most horrible things,

  1305. one of the hardest

1306. things I had to do was

  1307. to visit a woman.

  1308. I think she had a

  1309. Lou Gehrig's disease in

  1310. the very, very final,

1311. final year of her life

1312. and she could, by the

1313. end of it, all she could

  1314. do, she couldn't move

  1315. anything.

  1316. She could hardly even

  1317. blink.

1318. She'd move her eyes and

  1319. look at me.

  1320. She had these haunting

  1321. eyes.

  1322. They'd follow you around

  1323. the room.

1324. She had a little tube

1325. right here by her mouth

1326. and all she could do is

1327. just, she'd speak into it,

1328. try to amplify her voice

1329. and half the time I

  1330. could only understand,

1331. most of the time I

  1332. could only understand

  1333. half what she said.

  1334. And she loved Jesus.

  1335. I didn't bring her any

1336. comfort at all, I think,

1337. when I went to visit her

1338. because I was so deeply

  1339. addicted to wanting to

1340. be able to pray for

  1341. healing or do something

  1342. to fix it.

1343. And there was nothing to

  1344. fix, only to endure.

1345. And let me tell you,

  1346. wouldn't you rather

  1347. endure that knowing that

1348. you can talk to God and

  1349. that he loves you?

1350. That after a short time

  1351. in comparison to

  1352. eternity, that we will

  1353. have resurrection bodies

1354. and that we will be with

  1355. him for all eternity?

  1356. Wouldn't you rather

  1357. endure that knowing that

1358. you have a Savior who

1359. died on the cross because

  1360. he loved you?

1361. Than to endure it like

1362. being on the slope of a

  1363. mountain, seeing the

  1364. avalanche coming at you?

  1365. And you are powerless

  1366. and hopeless.

  1367. And I don't want you to

1368. choose it because one of

1369. them is a fanciful tale,

  1370. an imaginary tale that

  1371. gives you hope.

1372. Our hope ultimately is on

1373. the fact that God sent

  1374. his son.

1375. That God worked a miracle

1376. in the womb of Mary and

1377. he sent his son and that

1378. his son walked amongst us

  1379. and that eventually his

1380. son died upon the cross.

1381. And that which seemed like

1382. the defeat of evil and the

1383. defeat of empire and the

1384. and that which seemed like

  1385. a victory of empire and a

1386. victory of armed might and a

1387. victory of religion and a

  1388. victory of spirituality over

1389. God's own son ended up

1390. being in fact the means that

  1391. God used to reconcile

  1392. fallen human beings to

  1393. himself.

1394. Why don't you return to me?

1395. And we have a sure and

1396. certain hope because on the

1397. third day the grave was

  1398. empty.

1399. The grave was empty because

1400. he was no longer there.

  1401. He was risen.

1402. And he will come again.

1403. And there's other things you

1404. can say in terms of the

1405. wisdom of the philosophy and

1406. the power of the narrative.

1407. But we Christians have a

  1408. sure and certain hope.

1409. Some of us our response is

  1410. still going to be

  1411. I don't like having to

  1412. decide George.

  1413. I would I even hate thinking

1414. about the fact that God

  1415. would do something like

  1416. this.

1417. It just makes me angry.

  1418. I mean I know that there's

1419. people in this room that

1420. they know people who've left

  1421. the Christian faith because

  1422. of something that happened

1423. to a person that was really

  1424. good.

1425. And it makes them angry at

  1426. God.

1427. It makes them hate God.

1428. And they don't like this

  1429. language of return.

1430. It's just the whole thing.

1431. George it might very well

1432. be the case that if I

1433. studied Islam and if I

  1434. studied natural sciences

1435. and if I studied atheism

1436. and if I studied Buddhism

1437. and Hinduism I still might

  1438. come to the conclusion

  1439. George that the Christian

1440. answer is a better way to

  1441. understand how human

  1442. beings work.

1443. That it's only the Bible

  1444. that ultimately can really

  1445. account that causality is

  1446. really causality yet human

  1447. beings really have freedom

1448. and if we have freedom and

1449. if there is a God that does

1450. exist and he sent his son to

1451. die upon the cross that we

1452. can have some hope but it

  1453. still makes me angry.

1454. I'm going to turn my back

1455. away and I'll have to deal

  1456. with it.

1457. Just before we read the last

1458. two verses here's the thing

1459. that this whole text is

1460. trying to communicate to us.

1461. If you could put it up for me

  1462. please.

1463. God is untamed and untamable.

1464. He is only good and wholly

  1465. just.

1466. He is present and he is

  1467. all powerful.

1468. He is truly real and he is

  1469. inescapable.

  1470. He is inescapable.

1471. So heed him when he speaks.

  1472. Receive the gospel.

1473. And live each day knowing

  1474. you will meet him.

1475. Every one of us meets God

  1476. every day.

1477. But we meet God every day in a

1478. way that we don't recognize it.

1479. We don't thank him for air

  1480. conditioning.

1481. We don't thank him for the

  1482. breeze that cools us.

1483. We don't thank him for our

1484. breath or for our thoughts.

1485. We don't thank him for even the

1486. tiniest bit of health that we

1487. have or the fact that we have

  1488. money.

1489. We don't recognize his design and

1490. order and that he's all around

1491. us and that he's present to us

1492. that he's closer to our breath.

1493. But the time will come when the

  1494. inescapable God will be

  1495. inescapably recognized.

  1496. Verses 12 and 13.

1497. And note in the Hebrew how he

  1498. repeats himself twice.

  1499. It's for emphasis.

1500. Therefore thus I will do to you

1501. O Israel because I will do this

  1502. to you O Israel.

1503. Prepare to meet your God O Israel.

1504. Many of you have heard that

1505. phrase prepare to meet your God.

1506. This is where it is in the Bible.

  1507. Amos 4.

1508. Prepare to meet your God O Israel.

1509. For behold he who forms the

  1510. mountains.

  1511. Who creates the wind.

1512. Who declares to man what is his

  1513. thought.

1514. Who makes the dawn darkness and

1515. treads on the heights of the

  1516. earth.

  1517. The Lord.

  1518. The God of hosts.

  1519. Is his name.

  1520. Is his name.

1521. You know it's very very

  1522. interesting thing.

1523. This is a text of mercy.

1524. You know all the way through it

1525. says yet you did not return to me.

1526. Yet you did not return to me.

1527. Yet you did not return to me.

1528. Why does it say that?

1529. Many of us are familiar with this

  1530. famous line for Augustine.

1531. You have made us for yourself.

1532. And our hearts are restless.

1533. Until they rest in you.

  1534. It's funny.

  1535. It's a sign of how deeply

1536. addicted we are to being God.

1537. That we are bothered by being

1538. told that we are a creature.

  1539. A creature created by a creator.

1540. And when our creator created you

  1541. and me.

1542. He made us in our in his image.

1543. And we were always meant to be in

  1544. relationship with him.

1545. And when we turned away from him

1546. and decided to become God

1547. ourselves there was a rending of

  1548. that relationship.

1549. But every human being has a God

1550. shaped space in their life.

1551. And we might try to fill it with

1552. robbing and drinking and having

  1553. lots of money.

1554. We might try to fill it with

  1555. meditation.

1556. We might try to fill it with

1557. religious rituals of our own

  1558. choosing.

1559. But at the end of the day it can

  1560. only be filled.

  1561. By our creator.

1562. And that's why it says return.

1563. That's why it says return.

  1564. Return.

  1565. Return.

  1566. Return.

  1567. Return.

  1568. Return.

1569. And then it's very very surprising

1570. because still God shows grace.

  1571. Because we don't return.

  1572. We don't return.

  1573. We don't return.

  1574. We don't return.

  1575. We don't return.

  1576. We don't return.

1577. And then it doesn't say prepare to

  1578. meet your doom.

  1579. No.

  1580. There's still time.

1581. It says prepare to meet your God.

1582. And the phrase your God is only

1583. found two times in the book of

  1584. Amos.

1585. And the time the second time it is

1586. found in the book of Amos is the

1587. very end of the book of Amos where

1588. God talks about how he will restore.

  1589. He will redeem.

  1590. He will ransom.

  1591. He will reconcile.

1592. And he will provide a means by which

1593. his people are in relationship with

  1594. him.

  1595. So there's a choice.

  1596. We can say.

1597. Lord at first when I heard about the

1598. fact that you caused all of these

  1599. things.

  1600. I always knew.

1601. I think I said this last week.

1602. I always believed that you hated me.

1603. I've had so many bad things that

  1604. happened to me.

1605. I just believed you hated me.

1606. But now I hear that you don't hate me.

1607. That you want me to return to you.

1608. And that even now I can prepare to

  1609. meet you.

  1610. If we don't prepare.

1611. We still will meet God.

1612. And then it will be our doom.

1613. We'll be crying just like that.

  1614. Only a lot worse.

1615. But this is does not have to be your

1616. fate because it says prepare to meet

  1617. me.

1618. I will be your God.

  1619. God.

1620. You can be my child.

  1621. By adoption and grace.

  1622. Prepare for it.

1623. And then it just reminds us to make

1624. sure that we don't understand that we

1625. are to meet God in our own image.

1626. And in verse 13 in five these little

1627. descriptions six descriptions it gives

1628. us in just like you know how some

1629. people can take a drawing and just I can

1630. hardly draw a stick figure but they can

1631. just like oh this they go like this and

1632. they can go like this and they can go

1633. like and with just five or six lines you

  1634. can say that's a person I recognize

1635. that and that's what that's what he

1636. does here in poetic imagery.

  1637. Who is God?

1638. He is the one who forms the mountains.

1639. If you go to Vancouver and you see the

1640. Rockies just think those look really

1641. big they're really majestic it rains all

1642. the time in Vancouver but people always

1643. tell me but it's always worth it because

1644. every once in a while the rain goes

1645. away the clouds go away the sun comes

1646. out and there are the Rockies and they

  1647. are awesome.

  1648. God is bigger.

1649. God formed them with his hand.

1650. He formed them so they would be just so.

1651. God is bigger than the mountains.

  1652. He formed them.

  1653. He creates the wind.

1654. In the Hebrew there's different words

1655. for the word creation and the word

1656. that's used here in the Hebrew is only

  1657. used of God creating.

1658. In fact ultimately the Bible would say

1659. that human beings don't create.

1660. We're not creators in the same way that

  1661. God is.

1662. We are sub creators because in a sense

1663. only God creates but God creates the

  1664. wind.

1665. If you go out and there's a beautiful

1666. breeze God creates that wind.

1667. He creates the invisible that still has

1668. such an impact and an influence in your

  1669. life.

1670. And that God is not just something who is

1671. big and makes mountains and and sort of

1672. invisible and can cause the wind that we

1673. cannot see yet it feels us.

1674. God is closer than our thoughts.

1675. He knows every thought you have.

1676. He's there right in the he's closer than

  1677. our breath.

1678. He declares to man what is his thoughts.

  1679. He's present so close.

1680. He's as close as my thinking as close as

1681. my words as close as the imagination as

1682. close as all of the things that go on in

  1683. my head.

  1684. He's closer than that.

  1685. He sees it all.

1686. And then there's this wonderful line and

1687. in Hebrew there's the in English they try

  1688. to smooth it out.

1689. It's actually the way Yoda would speak.

1690. It really is a need to have a Yoda version

  1691. of the Bible.

1692. The maker of maker of dawn comma darkness.

1693. That's what actually says literally in

1694. Hebrew maker of dawn comma darkness.

  1695. Darkness.

  1696. Light and dark.

1697. The beginning and the end.

1698. The presence and the absence.

1699. And he treads on the heights of the earth.

1700. But he is not an impersonal God.

1701. He is not a force.

  1702. Merely a force.

1703. You cannot call God it.

1704. We can tame it eventually.

  1705. You cannot tame God.

  1706. He is the Lord.

1707. That is the name of the covenant God.

1708. The God who desires to be in a covenant

  1709. relationship with people.

1710. He is the God of hosts.

1711. The God of the angel armies.

  1712. And it's his name.

  1713. He is a he.

  1714. A person.

1715. So given such a God.

1716. How on earth can we prepare to meet him?

  1717. In Amos' time.

1718. 750 years before the birth of Jesus.

1719. The first thing that he could do is realize that the God who was a person speaks.

1720. So maybe I should listen.

  1721. See that's the problem.

1722. That's the problem with the rich and the bureaucrats.

1723. Who don't listen to the voice of conscience or revealed religion.

1724. That it's wrong to oppress the poor and to oppress the needy.

  1725. And it's a problem.

  1726. It's very interesting.

  1727. They talk about leaven.

1728. In other words, it's even when the worship seems to be very, very traditional and religious.

1729. They still completely and utterly stop listening to God.

1730. The Bible says not to put leaven in the worship.

  1731. In your sacrifices.

1732. And they go ahead and put leaven in the thing.

1733. Even when it's most apparently traditional.

1734. Even if it's a very, very fancy cathedral.

1735. And they're all walking around very, very solemn.

1736. It doesn't, you know, if they're all walking around very, very solemn.

1737. And it's to an organ music.

1738. But they're singing to God as she.

  1739. And they're going to celebrate a same-sex marriage.

1740. I've just been very controversial.

1741. The Bible says that all you're doing is refusing to listen to me.

  1742. And hardening your heart.

1743. See, it's why we need to pray that our church is reformed by the Bible.

1744. And is always reformed by the Bible.

1745. Because it's so easy for us to go astray.

1746. So first we can listen.

1747. But for people in Amos' time, they would realize that there is no way they can prepare to meet a God

1748. who's so close that he's closer than their thoughts and can shape, can create the wind and can shape mountains.

1749. And how can you ever prepare for that?

1750. And so before the cross, all they could do is say, Lord, have mercy.

1751. There is a riddle here in what you've asked.

1752. And I don't understand how you're going to solve the riddle.

1753. All I can do is call out to you for mercy, trusting that you will solve the riddle of how I listen and prepare to meet my God.

1754. I have to throw myself on your mercy.

1755. If you could put up the next point.

  1756. Three scripture texts.

1757. Amos, prepare to meet your God.

1758. Second one, found in Matthew, Mark, and Luke.

1759. This is my beloved son.

  1760. Listen to him.

1761. And the third quote from John, Jesus himself.

1762. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

1763. For God so loved the world that he gave his son, his only son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

1764. On the cross, Jesus bore our doom.

1765. And on the cross, when we put our faith and trust in Jesus, we are not only exchanging places with Jesus so that he has borne our doom, but he offers to us his perfect standing for the Father.

1766. His righteousness can stand for mine.

1767. So this is not, this then means that it's not that we have to all of a sudden deny the world or anything like that.

1768. It's a matter of being gripped with the gospel and then living in the world as God's creatures.

1769. Living, reconciled to our creator.

1770. Saying no to being the center of the universe in God.

1771. Knowing we're going to keep messing up and being gripped by the gospel.

1772. If you could put up the final prayer.

1773. You see, this text is calling us to hear it because we're so blessed that we're reading in this text after the cross.

1774. That we have to be gripped by the gospel.

1775. It's not just calling us to religious busyness.

1776. And we're being called to be a disciple of Jesus, to know him.

1777. The Bible isn't another type of religion.

1778. It's not calling us to religion.

1779. It's calling us to a relationship with God.

1780. In response to good news from God.

1781. About what he's done for us in the person of his son.

1782. It's inviting us to live a relationship with God.

1783. Always mindful that the only basis we have is not because we are better than other people.

1784. But purely and utterly because of what Jesus has done for us on the cross.

1785. And that when we receive that, we are responding to the cry of God.

1786. Why won't you return to me?

1787. Why won't you return to me?

1788. Every single person you see today on the street.

1789. God is saying to them.

1790. Why won't you return to me?

1791. If we say some small thing pointing them to Jesus.

1792. All we are doing is acting in accordance with the direction of the heart of God.

1793. Who says to each human being.

1794. Why won't you return to me?

1795. Because that is his heart.

1796. And this text is inviting us to be gripped by the gospel.

1797. Now living for his glory not our own.

1798. Calling us to obey his word.

1799. And to live every day in a growing knowledge.

1800. That God is all powerful.

  1801. That he's real.

  1802. That he's good.

  1803. That he's untamed.

  1804. He's inescapable.

  1805. To live.

1806. To begin to learn to live every day knowing that God is inescapable.

1807. For a Christian, a non-Christian, this prayer is the beginning of your Christian walk.

1808. For a Christian, it's an entering into deeper discipleship.

  1809. God is inescapable.

  1810. Please stand.

1811. And I invite you to pray this prayer with me.

1812. As I said, for some of you, if you have never given your life to Jesus, then, you know, there's nothing special about these words.

1813. And I know some purists would say it's missing this little aspect or this little.

1814. You know, if it's your words to be connected to God for the first time as his child, then pray it out.

1815. And for those of us who God is touching, it's a call for us to live each day knowing that he is inescapable.

1816. That he's bigger than every promise, every problem we face.

1817. And that we can live not as religious people or as spiritual people, but as people gripped by the gospel.

1818. I invite you to pray it with me.

1819. Dear Lord, please make me a disciple of Jesus, gripped by the gospel, who is living for your glory, by daily obeying your word, and growing in the knowledge that you are all-powerful, really real, only good, untamed, and inescapable.

  1820. In Jesus' name, amen.

1821. Father, pour out your Holy Spirit upon us.

1822. Make us such a people.

1823. Father, make me such a man.

1824. Make me such a pastor.

1825. This I pray in Jesus' name.

  1826. Amen.

1827. Please be seated as we go into a time of intercession.

1828. As we enter this time of prayer, please feel free to take whatever position helps you to communicate with us.
