  1. Heavenly Father, thank you so much

  2. for everyone who's here today

  3. and most of all that you're here.

  4. And God, you're not just our guest of honor.

  5. You are the reason that we're here.

  6. You're the reason that we sing.

  7. You're the reason that we pray.

  8. You're the reason that we stop to hear from you.

  9. God, we long for today,

  10. not just to be another church service,

  11. not just to be another thing in our schedule,

  12. but to meet with you the true and living God.

  13. And so God, for the sake of your son's name,

  14. for our good and for the good of this city,

  15. would you speak to us now through your word?

  16. Lord, speak, Lord.

  17. Your servants are listening.

  18. Would you speak to us through your word?

  19. Speak to everyone, including myself, from your word.

  20. In Jesus' name, amen.

  21. Amos chapter 5, verse 8.

    Amos 5:8

  22. He who made the Pleiades and Orion

  23. and turns deep darkness into the morning

  24. and darkens the day into night,

  25. who calls for the waters of the sea

  26. and pours the moat on the surface of the earth,

  27. the Lord is his name.

  28. These words are words of power.

  29. They're words of beauty.

  30. They're awe-inspiring words.

  31. They are an ancient hymn

  32. that the people of God sung.

  33. They're beautiful words.

  34. They're words of hope and meaning and life.

  35. Yet they're also very haunting words.

  36. And I'll share that with you

  37. and the meaning they're in as we go.

  38. So as we've seen week by week

  39. as we're going through verse by verse,

  40. chapter by chapter through Amos,

  41. we see that this is a book

  42. where God is sharing a very sobering message

  43. with his people.

  44. It was a time similar to today

  45. where the middle class

  46. is doing actually very well.

  47. The country of Israel was not at war

  48. with the countries around them.

  49. There's relative peace,

  50. just as we have in our day.

  51. There was headlines about stuff happening

  52. in other parts of the world,

  53. but their home was a place of safety.

  54. Their home was a place of security.

  55. And there were people like us

  56. who were very spiritual.

  57. They were very religious,

  58. just like we are at this church.

  59. They loved the liturgies.

  60. They loved the scriptures.

  61. They loved this stuff.

  62. And into that context,

  63. Amos brings a surprising word.

  64. These words of repentance,

  65. a warning of judgment.

  66. Verse six,

  67. Seek the Lord and live,

  68. lest he break out like fire

  69. in the house of Joseph

  70. and it devour with none

  71. to quench it for Bethel.

  72. Or you who turn justice to wormwood

  73. and cast down the righteous to the earth.

  74. There's such sobering words

  75. just before that in verse five.

  76. Seek me and live,

  77. but do not seek Bethel.

  78. Do not enter into Gilgal

  79. or cross over to Beersheba.

  80. What is Amos talking about?

  81. Bethel, Gilgal, and Beersheba

  82. were these cities that meant so much

  83. to the people of God.

  84. Not to the pagans,

  85. but to the people of God.

  86. These were these places

  87. where they were pilgrimages toward.

  88. They were pilgrims toward these places.

  89. Bethel was a place

  90. where Jacob famously,

  91. he fell asleep with it.

  92. The only pillow he had was a stone.

  93. And he had a dream,

  94. as you will probably remember,

  95. he had a dream of a ladder

  96. coming down from heaven.

  97. This was not a ladder

  98. of him climbing up to heaven.

  99. It was this beautiful ladder

  100. from God of the angels,

  101. of God's presence descending to him.

  102. It was a place where God

  103. was saying to Jacob,

  104. I'm here,

  105. I've come down to you.

  106. This is the same place

  107. where years later,

  108. Jacob would be returning

  109. to the promised land.

  110. He's returning there,

  111. and he encounters God,

  112. and God gives Jacob

  113. the name Israel.

  114. And so for the northern kingdom

  115. of Israel,

  116. who Amos is speaking to,

  117. this is a place

  118. of their identity.

  119. This is a place

  120. where God has named them.

  121. And they would go

  122. on pilgrimages there,

  123. these spiritual pilgrimages.

  124. They weren't going there

  125. to offer their children

  126. in the fires,

  127. as you'll see elsewhere,

  128. God addressing.

  129. They weren't going there

  130. to sacrifice to Baal

  131. or the Asherah poles.

  132. They were going there

  133. because this was a place

  134. where Yahweh had met

  135. with their forefathers.

  136. Gilgal.

  137. Gilgal was the place

  138. when they crossed over

  139. into the promised land.

  140. This was the place

  141. where they built

  142. the altar with the stones,

  143. each one representing

  144. the Tevolf tribes of Israel.

  145. This is where Joshua

  146. led them into,

  147. this was the gateway

  148. into the promised land.

  149. It's also the place

  150. where King Saul

  151. was anointed king.

  152. This was a place

  153. that spoke to them

  154. of the promise of God

  155. to bring them

  156. into this land

  157. that they were living in.

  158. And so then

  159. in the following verses

  160. where he says,

  161. for Gilgal,

  162. verse 5,

  163. for Gilgal shall surely

  164. go into exile.

  165. Everything was good.

  166. They were not at war.

  167. They were not under threat.

  168. And God was saying,

  169. stop going to this place,

  170. Gilgal.

  171. I'm actually going to

  172. bring it into exile.

  173. And then Beersheba,

  174. of all of them,

  175. this was the most holy place.

  176. Beersheba was the place

  177. where Abraham,

  178. standing there,

  179. the pagan king

  180. prophesies over him,

  181. saying,

  182. surely God is with you.

  183. This is the same place

  184. where Isaac,

  185. up until this point

  186. of Isaac's life,

  187. Abraham's son,

  188. God was Abraham,

  189. his father's God.

  190. But it is in Beersheba

  191. where God comes to Isaac

  192. in a dream and says,

  193. I am your God.

  194. And from that point forward,

  195. he is the God of Abraham,

  196. and he is the God of Isaac.

  197. He is your God

  198. and he is there with him.

  199. And this is also the place

  200. where Jacob,

  201. and they're coming years

  202. toward the end of Jacob's life,

  203. he's going toward Egypt,

  204. he's leaving the promised land.

  205. There's an anxiety in that.

  206. And he comes to Beersheba

  207. and this is where God

  208. comes to him and says,

  209. he's going to bless

  210. and prosper them in Egypt.

  211. Do not fear,

  212. he will bring them back.

  213. And he says the same words,

  214. I am your God.

  215. And so Beersheba was this place

  216. where it stood

  217. for the people of God

  218. as a reminder

  219. that God is not just

  220. the God up in the heavens,

  221. that he is there here with us,

  222. that he is our God.

  223. And so the people

  224. would go on these pilgrimages there.

  225. These were people,

  226. they weren't the ones

  227. flipping about religion.

  228. These weren't the ones like,

  229. ah, whatever.

  230. These were the ones

  231. who actually took

  232. their religion seriously.

  233. They loved their religion.

  234. And as they would go,

  235. they would sing hymns

  236. up on their way

  237. to these sacred places.

  238. And the words we have before

  239. so that I started with,

  240. this is actually,

  241. it seems,

  242. this is one of the hymns

  243. they would sing on their way up.

  244. He who made the Pleiades

  245. in Orion.

  246. Sorry, I can't sing it for you.

  247. I don't know the tune.

  248. He who made the Pleiades

  249. in Orion

  250. and turns deep darkness

  251. into the morning

  252. and darkens the day

  253. into night

  254. who calls for the waters

  255. of the sea

  256. and pours them out

  257. on the surface of the earth.

  258. The Lord is his name

  259. who makes destruction

  260. flash forth against the strong

  261. so that destruction

  262. comes upon the fortress.

  263. These are powerful,

  264. awe-inspiring,

  265. beautiful words.

  266. And they're meant here

  267. from God through Amos

  268. as a reminder

  269. of how far

  270. these people are from God.

  271. These beautiful words

  272. are haunting words

  273. because they're placed

  274. right in between

  275. God rebuking the people

  276. for how far they are from Him.

  277. Their lips,

  278. their lips,

  279. they honor God

  280. with their lips,

  281. with their words,

  282. but their hearts

  283. are far from God.

  284. So just before verse 8,

  285. just before this hymn

  286. is placed in there,

  287. we see,

  288. Oh you who turn justice

  289. to wormwood

  290. and cast unrighteous

  291. to the earth.

  292. And just after the hymn

  293. concludes,

  294. they hate Him

  295. who reproves in the gate

  296. and they behoor Him

  297. who speaks the truth.

  298. It talks about them

  299. trampling on the poor,

  300. on them loving

  301. what God hates,

  302. on them hating

  303. what God loves,

  304. on the corruption

  305. and injustice.

  306. Their actions

  307. and their hearts,

  308. their lives are far from God.

  309. So in between all of that,

  310. just right inserted,

  311. is this hymn.

  312. And it wasn't a hymn

  313. that Amos wrote.

  314. It wasn't a hymn

  315. that God was prophesying

  316. to His people.

  317. Rather,

  318. it was God reminding them

  319. of the very words

  320. that they are singing.

  321. And so from all that we can tell

  322. in reading this,

  323. this hymn,

  324. these beautiful,

  325. powerful words,

  326. hauntingly,

  327. are actually said by Amos

  328. almost sarcastically.

  329. In the midst of him saying,

  330. you are a people of injustice,

  331. you are far from God,

  332. as they're pilgriming down,

  333. on their pilgrimage

  334. up to Beersheba.

  335. And in the midst of saying

  336. all this stuff,

  337. and then he just inserts,

  338. He who made the play

  339. of these in Orion

  340. and turns deep darkness

  341. into the morning

  342. and darkens the day and tonight.

  343. He's saying,

  344. these are the things you say.

  345. And what is it,

  346. the things that they're singing?

  347. These are all words,

  348. these are all images

  349. of God being the God

  350. that transforms.

  351. The language of Pleiades

  352. and Orion

  353. is referring to

  354. the constellations

  355. that are most visible,

  356. the turn of the seasons.

  357. So they're singing of God

  358. who changes the seasons

  359. and turns deep darkness

  360. into the morning

  361. and darkens the day

  362. and tonight.

  363. This is the God

  364. who not only transforms

  365. the seasons,

  366. but He also is the God

  367. who transforms the day by day,

  368. the day into night

  369. and night by day.

  370. Who calls for the water

  371. of the sea

  372. and pours the mold

  373. on the surface of the earth.

  374. Not only the day by day

  375. and the seasons

  376. and all of this,

  377. but also the one time events

  378. of the sea

  379. flooding up over here

  380. and casting itself into there

  381. and pouring rain over there.

  382. This is the God

  383. who is in control

  384. of all the events

  385. of our time.

  386. The Lord is His name

  387. who makes destruction

  388. flash forth against the strong.

  389. Not only the God

  390. over the seasons

  391. and the days

  392. and the nights

  393. and the weather,

  394. but also the God

  395. over the destruction

  396. of cities

  397. and by its correlation

  398. also the rebuilding of them.

  399. This is the God

  400. who transforms.

  401. This is the unchanging changer,

  402. the one who changes us.

  403. And yet,

  404. it is placed right in the middle

  405. of these words from God

  406. saying,

  407. you are a people,

  408. you're so spiritual,

  409. you're singing hymns,

  410. you're going on these pilgrimages

  411. to these places

  412. where I've done

  413. great things in the past,

  414. yet you do not change.

  415. The balance here

  416. of describing their sins

  417. in verse 6 and 7,

  418. of describing how far

  419. they are from God,

  420. then they insert the hymn

  421. about change

  422. and yet they're unchanged

  423. as it goes into verse 10

  424. and verse 11

  425. and verse 12

  426. and verse 13,

  427. speaking to them

  428. of their sin.

  429. And the image here

  430. is that they're marching down

  431. to the place

  432. where they're remembering

  433. what God has done

  434. in the past.

  435. They're singing these hymns

  436. and then they're marching

  437. back home

  438. having sung those hymns

  439. and they're completely unchanged.

  440. It is haunting these words

  441. of God being the changer

  442. and yet he not changing us.

  443. It's as if a friend of yours

  444. was to say,

  445. hey, you know,

  446. earlier today

  447. I was walking

  448. across Rito Street

  449. and a Mack truck

  450. just came and smashed me.

  451. It was crazy.

  452. I was on my back

  453. and all the wheels

  454. went right over me

  455. and man,

  456. it was scary.

  457. And you're like,

  458. and then you went

  459. to the hospital

  460. and they're like,

  461. no, no,

  462. I just kept walking.

  463. I had things to do.

  464. You'd be like,

  465. well, you really were hit

  466. by a Mack truck?

  467. Really?

  468. I don't see any bruises.

  469. I don't see any broken bones.

  470. You're still alive.

  471. I don't really think

  472. this is the case.

  473. And as they're singing

  474. of God being the one

  475. who transforms seasons

  476. and days and nights

  477. and the waters

  478. and destruction of cities,

  479. they're singing of God

  480. being the one

  481. who changes and transforms

  482. yet there are people unchanged.

  483. God through Amos

  484. is saying,

  485. really?

  486. You're a broken people.

  487. You're wealthy,

  488. you're safe,

  489. you're secure,

  490. you're spiritual,

  491. but your hearts

  492. are so far from me.

  493. Have you really,

  494. do you even know me?

  495. You see the love

  496. and the pain in God's heart

  497. as he's looking at these people

  498. who, again,

  499. they're so sophisticated

  500. and yet so far from him.

  501. Verse 4 and 5,

  502. seek me,

  503. seek me and live.

  504. Do not seek Bethel,

  505. don't enter into Gilgal,

  506. cross over to Beersheba.

  507. You're going

  508. on these great pilgrimages,

  509. you're singing these hymns,

  510. but you're not seeking me,

  511. God is saying.

  512. You're seeking the stuff of God,

  513. you're not seeking God.

  514. And the stuff of God,

  515. as precious as the hymns are

  516. and as wonderful as it is

  517. to go to these places

  518. and to remember

  519. what God has done,

  520. God is saying through this,

  521. I'm here to not just,

  522. be the God of Abraham,

  523. Isaac, and Jacob,

  524. not just be the God

  525. that anointed Saul,

  526. not just be the God

  527. that brought you

  528. into the promised land,

  529. I'm here for the promise

  530. for you.

  531. I'm here to be your God,

  532. God is saying,

  533. not just your father's God,

  534. I'm here for you.

  535. Seek me and live.

  536. It's easy for us to see

  537. the reality of injustice

  538. and the trampling of the poor

  539. and because these are

  540. a people in the past,

  541. it's easy for us to see them

  542. as some primitive people,

  543. some barbaric people,

  544. but these are the people of God.

  545. In Israel at this time,

  546. go look it up,

  547. they're a sophisticated nation.

  548. This was a time of

  549. relative prosperity,

  550. of safety,

  551. of security.

  552. The economy was doing well,

  553. things were going well

  554. and they were spiritual people

  555. and not just like some

  556. random pagan spirituality,

  557. they were actually singing

  558. the hymns of God,

  559. going to the place

  560. where God had done things

  561. and yet they weren't

  562. seeking God,

  563. they loved the stuff.

  564. I can remember

  565. I was in high school,

  566. I was going to so many

  567. different church meetings,

  568. I loved church stuff

  569. and I'd go to worship nights

  570. and I'd listen to great preaching

  571. but there was a moment

  572. where it began to hit me

  573. that I loved the stuff of God

  574. but I didn't actually love God.

  575. And I'd see it in the jokes

  576. that I would tell

  577. and the things that I would laugh at

  578. and in my behavior

  579. toward my fellow man or woman,

  580. like I was a church guy

  581. but I wasn't really a godly man.

  582. I loved the stuff of God

  583. but I didn't actually know God.

  584. Just earlier this week on Thursday,

  585. I was driving up to Camp Iowa

  586. and there was a young man

  587. on the side of the road

  588. hitchhiking so he stopped,

  589. he jumped in

  590. and then like 30 seconds

  591. we started talking about God.

  592. I'm not even sure

  593. how it came up

  594. but we were talking about

  595. some stuff

  596. and he was saying,

  597. oh man,

  598. he's 14 years old

  599. and he's like,

  600. man,

  601. I don't get atheistic agnostics,

  602. I just don't get it.

  603. How can they not believe in God?

  604. Just look around us.

  605. It's beautiful out there

  606. near Camp Iowa.

  607. You got just lakes and trees

  608. and he's just like,

  609. look at this,

  610. clearly God exists

  611. and I love church.

  612. And they were chatting a bit

  613. and I said,

  614. okay,

  615. you love church,

  616. you believe in God,

  617. would you say that you know God?

  618. He's like,

  619. I don't understand,

  620. I don't get God,

  621. I don't,

  622. for me it's really,

  623. I just love the church,

  624. like the vibe I get in church.

  625. It's like,

  626. it's where I feel,

  627. I feel so alive there.

  628. I love church.

  629. He's like,

  630. but,

  631. I'll do chat a bit more,

  632. he's like,

  633. yeah,

  634. I don't know God.

  635. I don't pray to him,

  636. I don't,

  637. I don't know him

  638. but I know I love church.

  639. And that,

  640. I see,

  641. I saw myself in him

  642. as a teenager.

  643. I saw myself

  644. and I was,

  645. I would have been one of the guys,

  646. like some of you are,

  647. that you're the one who,

  648. you know,

  649. all the parents want their kids to be you

  650. because you're not swearing

  651. and if you laugh at inappropriate jokes,

  652. it's quiet enough

  653. that nobody realizes

  654. that you think it's funny

  655. and like you're not,

  656. I found,

  657. I loved what God hated

  658. and I hated what God loved

  659. and I came across Amos chapter 5

    Amos 5 chapter mention

  660. as a teenager

  661. and he's saying,

  662. God is saying,

  663. hate evil,

  664. love good,

  665. establish justice

  666. and so there,

  667. far from God,

  668. I just started saying,

  669. God,

  670. help me to hate what you hate

  671. and love what you love

  672. my heart is far from you,

  673. my heart is far from you,

  674. I remember,

  675. I remember being,

  676. some of you know Dominion Chalmers

  677. just a few blocks away,

  678. I remember being there

  679. at a worship service

  680. and everyone was just worshiping God

  681. and it hit me,

  682. I love the stuff of God,

  683. I love the songs,

  684. I love when the bass drum

  685. is just going boom,

  686. boom

  687. and you just feel like,

  688. you just feel your hair

  689. stand up on it

  690. and you're like,

  691. ah,

  692. but it wasn't actually God

  693. that I loved,

  694. I remember just getting

  695. on my knees

  696. and just saying,

  697. God,

  698. God,

  699. you're too precious

  700. to be my parents,

  701. God,

  702. God,

  703. I know my parents know you

  704. and I've heard amazing sermons

  705. of these men that know you

  706. just on my knees saying,

  707. God,

  708. I need to know you,

  709. I know about you,

  710. I need to know you,

  711. I need to know you

  712. and I got up from my knees

  713. that day

  714. and nothing had changed,

  715. didn't seem like God

  716. had heard me,

  717. I just remember getting

  718. the next day in my room

  719. just ominous,

  720. God,

  721. I need to know you,

  722. I need to know you,

  723. I love the stuff of God,

  724. I love church,

  725. I love the conferences,

  726. I love all that stuff

  727. but I don't know you,

  728. I know my heart

  729. is far from you,

  730. I know where no one else sees

  731. and I love what you hate,

  732. I hate what you love,

  733. you have my words

  734. but you don't have my heart,

  735. I give you my time

  736. but I haven't given you my life

  737. and I have to pray

  738. would God not answer

  739. the prayer of a young man

  740. just saying,

  741. God,

  742. hear me

  743. but he didn't

  744. and so I continued

  745. day after day,

  746. God,

  747. I remember being grade 12,

  748. still like,

  749. I think a year later,

  750. I'm in the library at school,

  751. I had a friend outside,

  752. they're doing their thing

  753. and I just would open up

  754. to Psalm 25

  755. and just cry out to God

  756. and say,

  757. God,

  758. I need to know you,

  759. I believed in God

  760. but

  761. my parents,

  762. they knew God

  763. and my pastors,

  764. they talked about him,

  765. I had friends,

  766. I just,

  767. God,

  768. I need to know you

  769. and I can look up my life

  770. and see life unchanged,

  771. God,

  772. you are the unchanging changer,

  773. you're the one that transforms

  774. not only seasons,

  775. you transform hearts,

  776. transform my heart,

  777. I didn't get why

  778. he wasn't answering me,

  779. then I reread Amos 5,

  780. seek me and live,

  781. see God is so much more,

  782. he's so,

  783. he loves you

  784. and he loves me so much,

  785. he doesn't just want us

  786. ever to be people

  787. who simply give him our words,

  788. who just love the liturgy

  789. or who people who are

  790. simply living like polite

  791. or even very kind

  792. and compassionate lives,

  793. that's all good stuff,

  794. that's all very good stuff

  795. but what he wants

  796. more than anything

  797. is our very self

  798. and he wants us

  799. not just to seek him

  800. for a life that's changed,

  801. he wants us to seek him

  802. and so Bethel,

  803. Gilgal,

  804. and Beersheba

  805. were very good things

  806. and God was saying,

  807. seek me,

  808. don't seek church

  809. in the Messiah,

  810. don't seek that,

  811. don't go out searching,

  812. oh you just want to get

  813. that incredible worship experience,

  814. you want to get the field,

  815. God's saying,

  816. no, seek me,

  817. seek me,

  818. know me

  819. and in God not coming through

  820. for me right away

  821. and him not answering

  822. that prayer right away,

  823. he was allowing me

  824. to be able to be one

  825. who sought after him

  826. and sought and sought

  827. and at first really,

  828. I think I was seeking him

  829. more for his stuff

  830. but over time

  831. I began to seek him

  832. and somewhere along the way

  833. he came through,

  834. he will be faithful,

  835. he is faithful

  836. and he will,

  837. he delights to answer

  838. that prayer

  839. and now to stand here,

  840. not just as your pastor

  841. but as your brother in Christ

  842. and to say,

  843. I know God,

  844. that it doesn't matter

  845. what happens,

  846. what trauma stuff

  847. has been thrown at me,

  848. there's a joy that I have

  849. that's unshakable,

  850. there's a peace that I have

  851. that it doesn't matter

  852. what is going on

  853. that there's still a peace,

  854. not just the absence

  855. of pain or anything,

  856. a peace even in the midst

  857. of pain

  858. but more than anything

  859. it's not the joy

  860. that I love

  861. or the peace that I love

  862. or the purpose

  863. God has given me,

  864. it's himself he's given me.

  865. As some of you know,

  866. Jason Byers,

  867. pastor at Celebration Church

  868. and I love his refrain,

  869. the giver is the gift,

  870. the giver is the gift,

  871. the greatest gift

  872. we have from God

  873. isn't the peace

  874. or the joy

  875. or the meaning

  876. or our friends

  877. or our family

  878. or community

  879. or any of the great things

  880. of God.

  881. The greatest gift

  882. we have is the giver himself,

  883. he has given us himself

  884. and that's what Bethel

  885. and Gilgal and Beersheba

  886. had been all about.

  887. Bethel,

  888. the place where

  889. God provided a ladder

  890. not for Jacob

  891. to try to climb up to God

  892. but where God

  893. had climbed down to him

  894. and this

  895. is what separates

  896. Christianity

  897. and the gospel,

  898. this is what separates

  899. the true and living God

  900. from all other religions

  901. and spiritualities.

  902. Every other religion

  903. and spirituality

  904. is about climbing away

  905. to God.

  906. If you,

  907. in Hinduism,

  908. in Buddhism,

  909. if you can just learn

  910. to think right,

  911. if you can just learn

  912. to detach yourself rightly,

  913. you'll be able

  914. to enter into nirvana.

  915. In Judaism,

  916. my family background,

  917. 613 laws,

  918. if you do those mitzvahs,

  919. if you do enough of them,

  920. you're going to make it,

  921. you're going to make it to heaven

  922. and Islam is five pillars

  923. and your obedience

  924. to those five pillars

  925. which are all,

  926. like they're very precious things,

  927. caring for the poor,

  928. they're good stuff

  929. but it's by you doing

  930. those things

  931. that you're going to help

  932. the balance of your life,

  933. the good things,

  934. away the bad

  935. and you get to heaven

  936. and every type

  937. is climbing to heaven

  938. and if anyone here

  939. is an atheist,

  940. agnostic,

  941. I want to say welcome,

  942. I'm glad you're here

  943. but your life

  944. is also a reflection

  945. of that same climbing

  946. of the ladder

  947. where it's not through

  948. these spiritual,

  949. metaphysical stuff

  950. but by getting enough success,

  951. by earning enough,

  952. by achieving enough,

  953. by establishing yourself enough,

  954. you're climbing your way

  955. to meaning

  956. and to significance,

  957. to your heaven

  958. but the reality

  959. that you know

  960. is that it doesn't work.

  961. The runs of the ladder

  962. just seem to break every time,

  963. we can't do it,

  964. we can't climb up,

  965. we'll never achieve enough,

  966. we'll never be enough

  967. and so the ladder

  968. at Beersheba

  969. or Bethel

  970. was the ladder

  971. of God coming down to us

  972. which separates Christianity

  973. from all other religions

  974. and spiritualities

  975. of the earth.

  976. There's nothing else like it

  977. where God himself

  978. climbs down to us

  979. where all of us realize

  980. that that balance

  981. is always going to be

  982. skewed against us

  983. that we've never able

  984. to do enough good

  985. to away the bad

  986. and the anxiety

  987. of all of that balance

  988. that Jesus,

  989. that his scale

  990. was fully tipped to the good

  991. that he was the one

  992. that speaks of

  993. calling them to justice

  994. and to mercy,

  995. to love what God loves

  996. and what God hates

  997. and to do good.

  998. Jesus was the one

  999. that did that completely.

  1000. The balance completely

  1001. in his,

  1002. weighed in his favor.

  1003. And the gospel message

  1004. is that,

1005. that Jesus gives that life,

  1006. that gives that

1007. being able to be there

  1008. in heaven,

  1009. not just in heaven

  1010. but being with God

  1011. on earth,

1012. that he gives us that,

  1013. that he makes us

1014. so fully alive in him.

  1015. Seek the Lord

  1016. and live.

  1017. If you're anything

1018. like I was in high school

  1019. or even still,

  1020. so much like today,

  1021. and when you find

  1022. there's a part of your life

1023. where it's not as it should be,

1024. where you need to be

  1025. seeking the Lord,

  1026. to hear the command,

1027. seek the Lord and live,

1028. it can be so frustrating.

  1029. I'm trying.

1030. I'm trying to seek the Lord

  1031. and live,

1032. but I find that I keep on

  1033. falling in love

1034. with the stuff of God,

  1035. but not God,

1036. the liturgy and the songs

  1037. and all these things.

  1038. How do I actually

  1039. have a heart that's changed?

  1040. How do I actually

  1041. come alive in him?

  1042. How do I live?

1043. But the commands of God

  1044. themselves are power.

  1045. When God said,

  1046. let there be light,

1047. it's not like the earth

  1048. was like,

  1049. oh, snap,

1050. I gotta be light now

  1051. and turn itself on.

1052. No, the very word of God,

1053. the very command of God,

  1054. let there be light,

1055. is also the creative power of God.

1056. The light received power to shine.

1057. The same seek me and live,

1058. it's the same thing going on

1059. when in John chapter 11,

    John 11 chapter mention

1060. Lazarus is dead in the tomb.

1061. He's been dead for several days.

1062. This is not a man

  1063. who can inspire himself

  1064. to stand on up

1065. no matter how much he tried.

  1066. This is a man who's dead

  1067. in grave clothes

  1068. and Jesus comes

  1069. and says two words,

  1070. come out.

  1071. And the dead man

1072. comes out of the tomb.

  1073. He comes alive.

  1074. There's nothing Lazarus

1075. could do to make himself

  1076. see God and live,

1077. but in the very call from God,

  1078. he comes alive

  1079. and he comes out.

  1080. The same thing

  1081. for the little girl

  1082. in Mark chapter 5.

    Mark 5 chapter mention

  1083. She's dead in bed.

  1084. Jesus kneels down

  1085. beside her bed,

  1086. takes her hand

1087. of a young dead woman

  1088. and says,

  1089. little girl arise

1090. and the girl comes alive.

1091. The command to seek God

  1092. and live

  1093. is an impossible command

1094. for you and I to follow.

  1095. We are dead,

  1096. spiritually dead.

  1097. It's an impossible command

  1098. except the one

  1099. who commands us

1100. also in this very command,

1101. breathe that life into us.

1102. Now even as he makes us alive in him,

1103. even as he breathes his life into us,

1104. we still have to respond to it.

  1105. You know,

1106. the story in John chapter 11

    John 11 chapter mention

1107. would have been very different

1108. if Lazarus lying there in the tomb,

  1109. if he's lying there

  1110. and Jesus is like,

  1111. Lazarus, come up!

1112. And he opens his eyes

  1113. and he's like,

  1114. oh my goodness,

  1115. I'm dead.

  1116. This is grave clothes?

  1117. Oh snap.

  1118. Man.

1119. And just closes his eyes

  1120. and continues to stay

  1121. living as the dead.

1122. And I know that I've definitely done that

  1123. where God is,

  1124. he's right there

  1125. and he's there,

1126. his grace that enables us

1127. to be able to cry out to him

  1128. for life

  1129. and receive that life,

  1130. to seek him.

  1131. And yet we're living a life

  1132. where he has said,

  1133. live!

1134. And you and I are just like,

  1135. in our grave clothes,

  1136. staying in the places

1137. where there's death and decay.

  1138. And God is saying,

  1139. come on out!

  1140. The impossible is possible

1141. because of who Jesus is.

  1142. And that call,

  1143. that call to be

1144. all that God calls us to be,

1145. it's a call not to sound like

1146. meaning and grace apart from him.

1147. That's what the people wanted.

1148. They wanted all the stuff

1149. but they didn't want God.

1150. It's a call to give your life

  1151. so fully to God.

1152. Not just to seek the stuff of God

  1153. but to seek God.

1154. To seek him and live.

1155. To seek him and live.

1156. And so the haunting words

  1157. in Amos chapter 5,

    Amos 5 chapter mention

1158. because of what Jesus has done,

  1159. because of his,

1160. not just calling us to live,

1161. but him giving us his life

1162. and making us alive in him,

1163. we can join in this ancient hymn

  1164. and sing it,

  1165. or read it,

1166. and see the beauty in it.

1167. The beauty of our God.

  1168. He,

1169. who made the Pleiades and Orion,

  1170. turns deep darkness

  1171. into the morning,

1172. and darkens the day into night,

1173. who calls for the waters of the sea,

  1174. and pours him out

1175. on the surface of the earth.

1176. The Lord is his name,

  1177. who makes destruction

1178. flash forth against the strong,

  1179. so that destruction

  1180. comes upon the fortress.

  1181. As this continues on,

  1182. and he goes on

  1183. back to the rebuking,

1184. the end of this passage

1185. that Anna read to us,

  1186. verse 16,

1187. and it repeats it three times

1188. in one of the names of God.

  1189. Therefore,

  1190. thus says the Lord,

  1191. the God of hosts,

  1192. the Lord.

  1193. And the translators

  1194. and the NIV,

  1195. the ESV,

  1196. the NLT,

  1197. all these ones,

1198. they tame it down for us.

  1199. They refer to it,

  1200. they refer to God

1201. as the Lord of hosts.

  1202. But they're actually,

1203. with the real name of God,

  1204. this isn't controversial,

  1205. Google it.

  1206. It's,

  1207. thus says the Lord,

  1208. the God of armies,

  1209. the Lord.

1210. And he repeats it three times,

  1211. the God of armies,

  1212. the God of armies.

1213. What's Amos doing right here?

1214. He's saying to the people,

  1215. look,

1216. you're so wrapped up in yourselves,

  1217. you're so wrapped up

1218. in all your spiritual stuff,

  1219. yet you're so dead,

1220. but look to the one,

  1221. the one who transforms

  1222. and changes

  1223. and breathes life.

  1224. Look to him,

1225. who is the God of power,

  1226. the God of armies.

  1227. Look to him.

1228. He is the one you are to fear

1229. and he is the one you are to love.

  1230. He is our hope.

1231. The other night at camp,

  1232. we're going through,

  1233. on Tuesdays and Thursdays,

1234. we have a worship evening

  1235. and each night

  1236. is a different theme

1237. of a name of God.

  1238. So on Thursday,

1239. we're doing God of armies.

  1240. And so we're singing,

1241. we didn't have a lot of songs

  1242. to choose from

1243. because there's not a lot of songs

  1244. about God of armies.

  1245. It's such a common name

1246. for God in the Bible.

1247. You need to change that.

1248. We need to write more songs,

  1249. Deborah.

  1250. But the,

  1251. we sang the song,

  1252. God of angel armies.

1253. Some of you know it.

  1254. It goes,

1255. the God of angel armies

1256. is always by my side.

1257. And we almost didn't sing it.

1258. And when it was done,

1259. I just spoke for a couple seconds

  1260. saying,

  1261. guys,

1262. the problem with this song

1263. is it makes it sound like this,

1264. the language of this God of power

  1265. and might,

  1266. the God of armies,

  1267. is kind of like,

  1268. he's our homeboy.

1269. He's just this thing right beside,

  1270. like,

1271. it almost makes it sound like

  1272. he's our Cinderella servant.

  1273. You know,

  1274. Cinderella,

  1275. go get my shoes.

  1276. Cinderella,

  1277. go get my brush.

1278. And it sounds as if

  1279. it's just,

1280. we kind of can just

1281. snap our fingers at God.

  1282. I don't know about your prayers.

1283. When I listen to my prayers,

1284. it can easily sound like that.

  1285. God,

  1286. I need you to,

1287. I need you to heal me.

  1288. I'm saying,

  1289. God,

1290. would you please help me

  1291. have a good day?

  1292. God,

  1293. would you,

1294. would you please speak through me

  1295. as I go preach?

  1296. I'm just like,

  1297. listing off these things

1298. I want God to do.

  1299. And it's like,

  1300. I'm saying,

1301. the God of angel armies,

  1302. he's by my side,

  1303. he's at my bidding.

1304. But if you look at the imagery

  1305. the Bible uses,

  1306. and it's,

  1307. go look it up,

1308. it's such a common name for God

  1309. in the Bible.

  1310. It's again and again,

  1311. the God of armies,

  1312. the God of armies.

1313. One of the greatest presentations

  1314. of what that means

  1315. is in the beginning

1316. of the book of Joshua,

  1317. just before Jericho.

  1318. Joshua,

1319. the leader of the people of Israel,

  1320. is,

  1321. he's there,

  1322. they're near Gilgal actually.

  1323. He's there and he's,

  1324. he's seeking God.

  1325. What should I do?

  1326. Jericho has big walls.

  1327. I don't know what to do.

1328. And all of a sudden,

1329. there's the most fierce angel

  1330. he's ever seen,

1331. or fierce soldier he's ever seen.

  1332. Just dwarfs Joshua.

  1333. And Joshua does what

1334. you and I would have called out,

  1335. like basically,

  1336. friend or foe.

  1337. He says,

1338. are you for us or against us?

  1339. And the response is,

  1340. neither.

  1341. And he says,

1342. he's the captain of the,

1343. of the armies of the living God.

  1344. And he calls Joshua

1345. to come be on his side.

1346. The God of angel armies

  1347. isn't like,

1348. isn't on our side in that sense,

1349. but we're on his side.

  1350. And in that,

  1351. there's such comfort

  1352. and strength

  1353. and power

  1354. and life.

  1355. As we don't seek

1356. to make the God of armies

  1357. our servant,

  1358. but rather we say,

  1359. God,

  1360. you are,

  1361. you are the God

  1362. of power and might

  1363. who transforms seasons,

1364. who turns the darkest night

  1365. into day

1366. and the day into night.

  1367. You,

  1368. the unchanging changer,

  1369. I'm yours.

1370. Would you pray with me?

  1371. God,

  1372. we confess

1373. that it's so easy for us

  1374. to enjoy church

  1375. and do all this

  1376. spiritual activity,

  1377. to sing the songs

  1378. even with passion,

  1379. to be moved

  1380. by the liturgy,

  1381. maybe even

  1382. convicted by a sermon,

1383. but for us to just

1384. let our seeking of you

  1385. end there,

1386. seeking the stuff of God,

  1387. but not you yourself.

  1388. God,

  1389. for some of us,

  1390. it's our parents

  1391. who know you,

  1392. it's our friends

  1393. who know you,

  1394. it's our pastor

  1395. who knows you,

  1396. but we ourselves

  1397. don't know you.

  1398. For others of us,

  1399. we knew you,

1400. but somewhere along the way,

  1401. you've become a memory.

  1402. You've become the God

1403. that was there with us

  1404. in Beersheba

  1405. or Bethel

  1406. or Gilgal,

  1407. but we're not walking

  1408. with you today.

  1409. Lord,

  1410. would you help us

  1411. to hear

  1412. your voice afresh

  1413. saying,

  1414. seek me and live.

  1415. That you're not

  1416. commanding us

  1417. to do something

  1418. that we cannot do,

  1419. but that you are

  1420. in your very command

  1421. empowering us

  1422. through the gospel

  1423. to live a life

1424. so fully alive in you.

  1425. And so God,

  1426. would you save us

  1427. from ourselves?

  1428. Would you save us

  1429. from trying to make

  1430. you our servant?

  1431. Lord,

  1432. we want to be

  1433. on your side

  1434. and we thank you

  1435. that because of

  1436. what Jesus has done

  1437. in his death

  1438. and resurrection

  1439. in real time,

  1440. real space,

1441. that we get to seek you

  1442. and live

1443. and live life with you

  1444. so fully alive

  1445. for your glory.

  1446. In Jesus' name,

  1447. Amen.
