    Genesis 47 chapter mention

  2. We find ourselves coming to the last words of Jacob

  3. as he blesses his grandchildren, his sons,

  4. and as he places his hope in God and God's promises.

  5. Now let's hear the word of God, first of all,

  6. in Genesis 47 and at verse 28.

  7. Jacob lived in Egypt 17 years,

  8. and the years of his life were 147.

  9. When the time drew near for Israel to die,

  10. he called for his son Joseph and said to him,

  11. if I have found favor in your eyes,

  12. put your hand under my thigh

  13. and promise that you will show me kindness and faithfulness.

  14. Do not bury me in Egypt,

  15. but when I rest with my fathers,

  16. carry me out of Egypt and bury me where they are buried.

  17. I will do as you say, he said.

  18. Swear to me, he said.

  19. Then Joseph swore to him,

  20. and Israel worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff.

  21. Sometime later, Joseph was told,

  22. your father is ill.

  23. So he took his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim,

  24. along with him.

  25. When Jacob was told,

  26. your son Joseph has come to you,

  27. Israel rallied his strength and sat up on the bed.

  28. Jacob said to Joseph,

  29. God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan,

  30. and there he blessed me and said to me,

  31. I am going to make you fruitful

  32. and will increase your numbers.

  33. I will make you a community of peoples,

  34. and I will give this land as an everlasting possession

  35. to your descendants after you.

  36. Now then,

  37. your two sons born to you in Egypt

  38. before I came to you here will be reckoned as mine.

  39. Ephraim and Manasseh will be mine,

  40. just as Reuben and Simeon are mine.

  41. Any children born to you after them will be yours.

  42. In the territory they inherit,

  43. they will be reckoned under the names of their brothers.

  44. As I was returning from Paddan,

  45. to my sorrow,

  46. Rachel died in the land of Canaan

  47. while we were still on the way,

  48. a little distance from Ephraim.

  49. So I buried her there beside the road to Ephraim,

  50. that is Bethlehem.

  51. When Israel saw the sons of Joseph,

  52. he asked,

  53. who are these?

  54. They are the sons God has given me here,

  55. Joseph said to his father.

  56. Then Israel said,

  57. bring them to me so that I may bless them.

  58. Now Israel's eyes were failing because of old age

  59. and he could hardly see.

  60. So Joseph brought his sons close to him

  61. and his father kissed them and embraced them.

  62. Israel said to Joseph,

  63. I never expected to see your face again

  64. and now God has allowed me to see your children too.

  65. Then Joseph removed them from Israel's knees

  66. and bowed down with his face to the ground.

  67. And Joseph took both of them,

  68. Ephraim on his right towards Israel's left hand,

  69. and Manasseh on his left towards Israel's right hand

  70. and brought them close to him.

  71. But Israel reached out his right hand

  72. and put it on Ephraim's head,

  73. though he was the younger and crossing his arms,

  74. he put his left hand on Manasseh's head,

  75. even though Manasseh was the firstborn.

  76. Then he blessed Joseph and said,

  77. may the God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked,

  78. the God who has been my shepherd all my life to this day,

  79. the angel who has delivered me from all harm,

  80. may he bless these boys.

  81. May they be called by my name

  82. and the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac,

  83. and may they increase greatly upon the earth.

  84. When Joseph saw his father placing his right hand

  85. on Ephraim's head, he was displeased.

  86. So he took hold of his father's hand

  87. to move it from Ephraim's head to Manasseh's head.

  88. Joseph said to him,

  89. no, my father, this one is the firstborn.

  90. Put your right hand on his head.

  91. But his father refused and said,

  92. I know, my son, I know.

  93. He too will become a people

  94. and he too will become great.

  95. Nevertheless, his younger brother will be greater than he

  96. and his descendants will become a group of nations.

  97. He blessed them that day and said,

  98. in your name will Israel pronounce this blessing.

  99. May God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh.

  100. So he put Ephraim ahead of Manasseh.

  101. Then Israel said to Joseph,

  102. I am about to die,

  103. but God will be with you

  104. and take you back to the land of your fathers.

  105. And to you, as one who is over your brothers,

  106. I give the ridge of land I took from the Amorites

  107. with my sword and my bow.

  108. And then into Genesis 49,

  109. we find Jacob blessing each of his children,

  110. speaking prophetic words of them.

  111. But I want us to turn to chapter 49 and verse 29.

  112. So just over the page.

  113. So after he blessed them,

  114. then he gave them these instructions.

  115. I am about to be gathered to my people.

  116. Bury me with my fathers in the cave

  117. in the land of Ephron the Hittite,

  118. the cave in the field of Machpelah near Mamre in Canaan,

  119. which Abram bought as a burial place

  120. from Ephron the Hittite along with the field.

  121. There Abraham and his wife Sarah were buried.

  122. There Isaac and his wife Rebecca were buried.

  123. And there I buried Leah.

  124. The field and the cave in it

  125. were brought from the Hittites.

  126. When Jacob had finished giving instructions to his sons,

  127. he drew his feet up into the bed,

  128. breathed his last,

  129. and was gathered to his people.

  130. Let's pray once again.

  131. Now, can we turn back in our Bibles

  132. to Genesis 47 to 49

  133. in our church Bibles on page 54?

  134. Let me say at this time,

  135. welcome to those who are listening online.

  136. It's great to be able to worship together.

  137. As we think today about Jacob,

  138. as we think about a dying man's faith,

  139. and as we see in his experience

  140. and in his words,

  141. hope for a fearful world.

  142. It's almost hard to avoid fear right now.

  143. There are words that are becoming

  144. such a normal part of our vocabulary.

  145. Pandemic,

  146. self-isolation,

  147. virus that cannot be contained.

  148. And we can see that these words

  149. and the reality of the virus

  150. are striking fear around the globe.

  151. And perhaps as we gather here or at home,

  152. perhaps there is fear in our own hearts too.

  153. We're waiting,

  154. always waiting,

  155. waiting for the World Health Organization

  156. or for government

  157. or for the NHS to issue guidelines.

  158. It's dominating every conversation

  159. in every household,

  160. so it seems.

  161. And I wonder if we're finding too

  162. that it's setting the beat

  163. for our own hearts,

  164. that it's determining how we think

  165. and how we feel.

  166. So I want to use the words of Jacob

  167. to speak to us in this situation.

  168. How can Jacob's dying words guide us?

  169. Two questions to think about this morning.

  170. The first is to do with promise,

  171. to ask ourselves the question,

  172. what is it that I am hanging my hope on?

  173. And then a question to do with peace.

  174. How can I have rest

  175. in a climate of fear?

  176. Whether we're Christians

  177. or whether we're not Christians,

  178. it's always good for us to think,

  179. what is my life built on?

  180. And what do I look for,

  181. look to for peace and security?

  182. So let's first of all,

  183. think about this question,

  184. what am I hanging my hope on?

  185. And let's see it in Jacob's experience,

  186. first of all.

  187. So we began reading in chapter 47

  188. from verse 28 to 31.

  189. And there we see that Jacob,

  190. who'd arrived as an old man in Egypt,

  191. 130,

  192. he enjoyed prosperity and plenty

  193. in Egypt for 17 years,

  194. cared for, provided for by Joseph,

  195. his son.

  196. But now he is dying

  197. and his thoughts turn to his burial

  198. where his bones will rest.

  199. And you notice what he asks,

  200. what he wants Joseph to swear to,

  201. do not bury me in Egypt,

  202. but when I rest with my fathers,

  203. carry me out of Egypt

  204. and bury me where they are buried.

  205. Now this is not some kind of superstition

  206. and this is not a simple sentiment.

  207. This is Jacob showing that he is holding onto

  208. a greater hope,

  209. that God's promised land is his true home.

  210. Jacob has been in Egypt for 17 years,

  211. but still he is homesick

  212. for the promised land.

  213. His heart is back in Canaan.

  214. That was the land of God's promise.

  215. And that was the land where God had promised

  216. to be with his people.

  217. So just as at the beginning of Genesis,

  218. you discover God creating the world

  219. and God establishing the Garden of Eden,

  220. that good, that perfect land

  221. where God and his people could dwell together.

  222. So Canaan becomes Eden part two

  223. in Jacob's thought.

  224. So he wants to be home.

  225. We see how important the promise of God is

  226. to him and to his family

  227. at the end of chapter 48,

  228. which we read.

  229. What is his dying wish for Joseph?

  230. What does he give to Joseph?

  231. To you as one who is over your brothers,

  232. I give the ridge of land.

  233. I took from the Amorites with my sword and my bow.

  234. So Joseph has become really wealthy in Egypt.

  235. He has power and influence in Egypt.

  236. He is second only to the Pharaoh.

  237. But Jacob in his dying words reminds Joseph,

  238. this is not your true home.

  239. So he gives him that ridge,

  240. that portion of land that connects Joseph

  241. to the promise of God.

  242. And we'll see in chapter 50

  243. how Joseph, the man of faith,

  244. also in his heart longs for the promised land

  245. because it's God's land.

  246. And then we concluded

  247. and we heard the dying words of Jacob

  248. in chapter 49,

  249. his last will and testament.

  250. What are the last instructions he gives

  251. to his sons?

  252. His detailed instructions

  253. for where he is to be buried.

  254. He wants to be buried with the people of God

  255. in the land that God had promised.

  256. And what we see here is that Jacob

  257. both lives and dies

  258. standing on the promises of God.

  259. We have that wonderful picture

  260. when he anticipates his own death

  261. there at the end of verse 47.

  262. We see him worshipping.

  263. He worships the God that he knows.

  264. The God who has proved faithful to him,

  265. who has proved faithful to his family,

  266. and who will prove faithful to those promises

  267. even after he has died.

  268. So we can say that Jacob's life

  269. and especially here Jacob's death

  270. reveals the foundation for his life.

  271. All of us have something

  272. that we build our hope and identity on.

  273. All of us, when we are pushed,

  274. whether we would say it explicitly

  275. or whether it's just the implicit reality

  276. of our lives,

  277. we think and we act

  278. as if my life is about something.

  279. When I face trouble,

  280. we turn in a particular direction.

  281. Now we see for Jacob,

  282. his life was built on God

  283. and his promises in his heart

  284. and mind is turned there often.

  285. In different industries,

  286. we talk about stress testing.

  287. In the construction industry,

  288. the stress testing of materials

  289. to see if they will stand the strain

  290. or the stress testing

  291. of banking procedures.

  292. Will they be able to cope

  293. with financial strain and crisis?

  294. I want to suggest to you and to me today

  295. that the coronavirus

  296. is serving for us

  297. as a stress test

  298. to the foundation of your life and mine.

  299. It's making us

  300. perhaps ask questions

  301. that we hardly ever find the time

  302. to ask ourselves.

  303. Am I hanging my hope

  304. on something solid and firm

  305. or is my whole life

  306. hanging on

  307. a sugary pang?

  308. Jesus,

  309. speaking to the crowd,

  310. said that he was

  311. a solid rock,

  312. that his word

  313. was a solid rock

  314. to build on,

  315. that anything else

  316. is shifting sands

  317. that will not

  318. hold the weight

  319. of a life

  320. and especially not

  321. as we consider

  322. eternity.

  323. One of the striking things

  324. that this virus

  325. is revealing to us

  326. is that our gods

  327. are too small.

  328. What is it that our culture

  329. and society,

  330. what is it that we often live for?

  331. Wealth.

  332. What's happening?

  333. The stock markets

  334. are crashing.

  335. Businesses are collapsing.

  336. Work is coming to an end.

  337. That God

  338. is not one

  339. that people are able

  340. to rely on.

  341. Health.

  342. We so often

  343. live as if

  344. health is everything,

  345. but here we have

  346. this unseen virus

  347. that can take it

  348. and it is no respecter

  349. of persons.

  350. For many people

  351. in our culture,

  352. we love

  353. and we live

  354. for leisure.

  355. But what are we seeing?

  356. Sports closing down,

  357. holidays being cancelled,

  358. life is grinding

  359. to a halt.

  360. We cannot

  361. bank on these.

  362. What we are seeing

  363. in these weeks

  364. is that all the pillars

  365. of modern life

  366. are shaking.

  367. That they are failing

  368. the stress test

  369. and they are reminding us

  370. if we're Christians

  371. or not

  372. that we need

  373. to find a hope

  374. that lasts.

  375. Something to build

  376. our life on

  377. that will not fail

  378. and disappoint us.

  379. And what do we see

  380. in Jacob?

  381. We see a man

  382. who trusts God

  383. and who trusts

  384. the promises of God

  385. and we see a solid

  386. and stable foundation

  387. both in his life

  388. and in his death.

  389. Jacob points us

  390. to the better way,

  391. the way of faith

  392. in God.

  393. And when we think

  394. about the coming

  395. of Jesus,

  396. we have the one

  397. that we are called

  398. to look to

  399. and to place

  400. all our trust

  401. and confidence in.

  402. This Jesus

  403. who in love

  404. entered into

  405. our world.

  406. Jesus who suffered

  407. with us,

  408. who knows what it is

  409. to experience

  410. want

  411. and to suffer.

  412. Jesus who goes

  413. to the cross

  414. to deal with

  415. the great enemy

  416. that so many of us

  417. are confronting

  418. in our mind's eye,

  419. the enemy of death,

  420. the wages for sin.

  421. And Jesus goes

  422. to the cross

  423. to defeat

  424. that enemy

  425. so that

  426. by faith in him,

  427. through his loving

  428. sacrifice,

  429. we might be forgiven,

  430. that we too

  431. might become

  432. the people of God

  433. adopted into

  434. God's family,

  435. that we too

  436. might live

  437. in the presence

  438. of God

  439. with a hope

  440. of the place

  441. of God,

  442. glory,

  443. the new heaven

  444. and earth

  445. still to come.

  446. This virus

  447. is proving

  448. a wake-up call

  449. to all of us.

  450. God

  451. and his word,

  452. Jesus

  453. and the gospel

  454. are the only

  455. virus-proof

  456. and future-proof

  457. hope that we

  458. will find

  459. anywhere.

  460. Another thing

  461. that we see

  462. in Jacob

  463. is just that

  464. his heart

  465. has that

  466. longing

  467. for home,

  468. the place

  469. where God's

  470. promises

  471. lie.

  472. It explains

  473. why when people

  474. move to different

  475. countries,

  476. they treasure

  477. and they hold

  478. on to their

  479. home culture

  480. really tightly,

  481. move to a different

  482. part of the world,

  483. but hold on to

  484. language and food

  485. and festivals.

  486. Home is where

  487. the heart is.

  488. and this virus

  489. is exposing

  490. to us

  491. where our

  492. hearts

  493. really lie.

  494. We see

  495. stories,

  496. we read stories,

  497. we watch

  498. videos of people

  499. panic buying,

  500. people fighting

  501. over toilet paper

  502. and packets of

  503. pasta,

  504. people living

  505. with fear

  506. because if all

  507. I have is

  508. now,

  509. if this life

  510. is it,

  511. then I need

  512. to grab hold

  513. of everything

  514. I can get.

  515. And so this

  516. virus is striking

  517. real terror

  518. into many

  519. people's hearts

  520. because this

  521. is it

  522. in many

  523. people's

  524. thinking.

  525. But there's

  526. a different

  527. response.

  528. It's gone

  529. under the

  530. radar,

  531. but maybe

  532. you heard

  533. of what

  534. the Christians

  535. in Wuhan

  536. were doing,

  537. the center

  538. of the epidemic

  539. as the virus

  540. was just

  541. beginning to

  542. become news

  543. for the rest

  544. of the world.

  545. There were

  546. Christians,

  547. while facing

  548. opposition from

  549. a government,

  550. they were

  551. caring for

  552. the sick.

  553. They were

  554. bringing supplies,

  555. they were

  556. showing mercy

  557. and sharing

  558. the hope

  559. of Jesus

  560. Christ.

  561. Why?

  562. Because as

  563. Christians,

  564. they knew

  565. they had a

  566. true and

  567. better home

  568. coming.

  569. That's where

  570. their heart

  571. is.

  572. So they

  573. were able

  574. to serve

  575. rather than

  576. to cling

  577. on,

  578. able to

  579. show peace

  580. rather than

  581. panic.

  582. What is our

  583. source of hope

  584. really and

  585. truly?

  586. The source

  587. of hope

  588. we long

  589. for can

  590. only be

  591. found in

  592. Jesus,

  593. not in

  594. stuff.

  595. Jesus in

  596. his mercy

  597. and his

  598. grace,

  599. he offers

  600. himself to

  601. us.

  602. He offers

  603. himself to

  604. our fearful

  605. and fragile

  606. world to

  607. receive by

  608. faith.

  609. So that

  610. was Jacob

  611. showing us

  612. that he was

  613. holding on to

  614. God's promise.

  615. But what

  616. about this

  617. question of

  618. peace?

  619. How can I

  620. have rest

  621. in a

  622. climate of

  623. fear?

  624. Chapter 49

  625. and verse

  626. 33 is a

  627. beautiful

  628. deathbed

  629. scene.

  630. When Jacob

  631. had finished

  632. giving instructions

  633. to his

  634. sons,

  635. he drew his

  636. feet up

  637. into the

  638. bed,

  639. breathed his

  640. last,

  641. and was

  642. gathered to

  643. his people.

  644. Here is

  645. Jacob,

  646. a man at

  647. peace with

  648. God,

  649. now enters

  650. his eternal

  651. rest to be

  652. with God.

  653. Catechisms,

  654. the Heidelberg

  655. Catechism,

  656. the New City

  657. Catechism,

  658. more recently,

  659. begin with the

  660. question,

  661. what is our

  662. only hope in

  663. life and

  664. death?

  665. The answer

  666. that we are

  667. not our

  668. own,

  669. but we

  670. belong body

  671. and soul

  672. to God

  673. and to

  674. our

  675. Savior,

  676. Jesus

  677. Christ.

  678. I had

  679. hope that

  680. we would

  681. be learning

  682. as a church

  683. together a

  684. new hymn for

  685. Easter by the

  686. Gettys and

  687. some of their

  688. friends,

  689. Christ our

  690. hope in

  691. life and

  692. death,

  693. which speaks

  694. to this

  695. truth.

  696. And we see

  697. Jacob,

  698. this dying

  699. man of

  700. faith,

  701. he gets

  702. it.

  703. He's got

  704. hope and

  705. he's got

  706. peace because

  707. his faith

  708. is rooted

  709. in God.

  710. The God

  711. who has

  712. entered into

  713. covenant with

  714. his family,

  715. with Abraham,

  716. with Isaac,

  717. and now with

  718. Jacob,

  719. the one who

  720. has shown

  721. himself faithful

  722. to those

  723. covenant promises

  724. so that Jacob

  725. is able to

  726. rest in

  727. peace.

  728. peace.

  729. Isn't that

  730. what we

  731. would all

  732. want?

  733. To have

  734. peace.

  735. To have

  736. peace in

  737. our hearts

  738. regardless of

  739. circumstances.

  740. To have

  741. peace in

  742. our hearts

  743. for life

  744. and facing

  745. death.

  746. Isn't this

  747. what we want

  748. for ourselves,

  749. for our

  750. families,

  751. for our

  752. city,

  753. for our

  754. country,

  755. for our

  756. world?

  757. That instead

  758. of panic

  759. and fear,

  760. there'd be

  761. hope and

  762. peace?

  763. We find

  764. it in

  765. God's

  766. word.

  767. I love

  768. as well

  769. how Jacob

  770. wants this

  771. legacy of

  772. faith for

  773. future generations

  774. that they

  775. might have

  776. the peace

  777. that he

  778. has enjoyed.

  779. Genesis

  780. 48 and

  781. 49 is

  782. one extended

  783. deathbed

  784. scene where

  785. Jacob,

  786. first of all,

  787. blesses

  788. Joseph and

  789. his

  790. grandchildren,

  791. Jacob's

  792. grandchildren,

  793. and then he

  794. turns to bless

  795. his sons.

  796. But I want

  797. us to focus

  798. on the

  799. words that

  800. Grandpa

  801. Jacob has

  802. for Ephraim

  803. and Manasseh

  804. in verses

  805. 15 and

  806. 16.

  807. So remember,

  808. these are two

  809. boys born to

  810. Joseph,

  811. born in

  812. Egypt,

  813. never been to

  814. the promised

  815. land,

  816. born and

  817. raised

  818. Egyptian.

  819. As he

  820. blesses

  821. Joseph,

  822. extending

  823. blessing to

  824. Ephraim and

  825. Manasseh,

  826. he said,

  827. may the

  828. God before

  829. whom my

  830. fathers,

  831. Abraham and

  832. Isaac,

  833. walked,

  834. the God

  835. who has been

  836. my shepherd

  837. all my life

  838. to this

  839. day,

  840. the angel

  841. who has

  842. delivered me

  843. from all

  844. harm,

  845. may he

  846. bless these

  847. boys.

  848. May they be

  849. called by

  850. my name

  851. and the

  852. names of

  853. my fathers,

  854. Abraham and

  855. Isaac,

  856. and may they

  857. increase

  858. greatly

  859. upon the

  860. earth.

  861. what's

  862. happening

  863. there?

  864. He's

  865. adopting

  866. his

  867. grandkids

  868. into

  869. the

  870. family

  871. of

  872. faith.

  873. He is

  874. desiring

  875. for them

  876. that they

  877. would have

  878. God as

  879. their

  880. Lord and

  881. that they

  882. too would

  883. come under

  884. the blessing

  885. of God's

  886. promises.

  887. Here is

  888. Grandpa

  889. Jacob saying

  890. to them,

  891. I want

  892. you boys

  893. to know

  894. God as

  895. your good

  896. shepherd,

  897. just as I

  898. have known

  899. him as

  900. mine.

  901. I want

  902. you to

  903. trust him

  904. to guide

  905. you and

  906. protect

  907. you.

  908. I want

  909. you to

  910. see your

  911. true identity

  912. not as

  913. an Egyptian

  914. but as

  915. a child

  916. of God

  917. to place

  918. your hope

  919. in the

  920. promises

  921. of God

  922. not the

  923. wealth

  924. of

  925. Egypt.

  926. This is

  927. the legacy

  928. that he

  929. wants for

  930. his children

  931. and his

  932. grandchildren.

  933. Let me

  934. speak to

  935. our parents

  936. and our

  937. grandchildren,

  938. our

  939. grandparents.

  940. What legacy

  941. is it that

  942. we want

  943. to pass

  944. on to

  945. our kids

  946. and our

  947. grandkids?

  948. What is it

  949. that we

  950. want for

  951. them?

  952. Of course

  953. we want

  954. health,

  955. we want

  956. success,

  957. and we

  958. want happiness,

  959. and we

  960. want security,

  961. but do we

  962. want above

  963. all that

  964. they would

  965. know God,

  966. that they

  967. would love

  968. Jesus,

  969. that they

  970. would walk

  971. by faith,

  972. that they

  973. would live

  974. lives of

  975. obedience?

  976. obedience.

  977. Nothing

  978. else

  979. matters,

  980. really,

  981. eternally,

  982. nothing

  983. else

  984. matters,

  985. except that

  986. our children

  987. and our

  988. grandchildren

  989. belong to

  990. God.

  991. They need

  992. Jesus.

  993. They need

  994. the peace

  995. of God,

  996. and so

  997. do we.

  998. how can

  999. we have

  1000. this peace

  1001. that allows

  1002. Jacob to

  1003. die and

  1004. rest in

  1005. peace?

  1006. We need

  1007. to look to

  1008. Jesus,

  1009. who comes

  1010. to us as

  1011. the prince

  1012. of peace.

  1013. We've heard

  1014. Jacob's dying

  1015. words.

  1016. Let's hear

  1017. Jesus'

  1018. words,

  1019. dying words

  1020. spoken on

  1021. the cross.

  1022. Let's see

  1023. how they can

  1024. give us

  1025. peace and

  1026. rest.

  1027. Think about

  1028. Jesus saying,

  1029. Father,

  1030. forgive them.

  1031. They don't

  1032. know what

  1033. they are

  1034. doing.

  1035. Think of

  1036. Jesus extending

  1037. love and

  1038. seeking forgiveness

  1039. for his

  1040. enemies,

  1041. and recognize

  1042. that Jesus'

  1043. death on the

  1044. cross is the

  1045. answer to the

  1046. problem of

  1047. sin and

  1048. guilt and

  1049. the fear of

  1050. judgment that

  1051. lies in all

  1052. of our

  1053. hearts.

  1054. There is hope

  1055. for peace

  1056. beyond that

  1057. because of

  1058. the forgiveness

  1059. that Jesus

  1060. came to

  1061. secure.

  1062. And how does

  1063. he secure it?

  1064. He secures it

  1065. by becoming

  1066. a sacrifice.

  1067. Think too

  1068. of the words

  1069. of Jesus

  1070. as he cried

  1071. out,

  1072. my God,

  1073. my God,

  1074. why have

  1075. you forsaken

  1076. me?

  1077. Here is Jesus

  1078. at the cross

  1079. having

  1080. experienced and

  1081. enjoyed the

  1082. eternal

  1083. love of

  1084. the Father,

  1085. enjoying

  1086. fellowship with

  1087. the Father,

  1088. but here in

  1089. this moment

  1090. as he takes

  1091. on himself

  1092. the crushing

  1093. weight of

  1094. the Father's

  1095. anger against

  1096. our sin,

  1097. he cannot

  1098. feel that

  1099. love.

  1100. He feels

  1101. forsaken.

  1102. Why?

  1103. He is going

  1104. there so that

  1105. you and I

  1106. could be

  1107. adopted into

  1108. the family

  1109. of God.

  1110. He knows

  1111. no peace

  1112. so that we

  1113. might have

  1114. true and

  1115. eternal peace.

  1116. Think too

  1117. of Jesus'

  1118. words,

  1119. it is

  1120. finished.

  1121. What is he

  1122. saying there?

  1123. He's saying

  1124. his work of

  1125. salvation is

  1126. complete.

  1127. The victory

  1128. had been won.

  1129. Those great

  1130. enemies of

  1131. Satan,

  1132. sin and

  1133. death,

  1134. no longer

  1135. rule and

  1136. reign.

  1137. for us

  1138. as the

  1139. people of

  1140. God,

  1141. we are no

  1142. longer

  1143. slaves to

  1144. sin.

  1145. We don't

  1146. need to

  1147. live with

  1148. a fear

  1149. of death.

  1150. The way

  1151. home to

  1152. God is

  1153. now open

  1154. through the

  1155. sacrifice of

  1156. Jesus and

  1157. that's a

  1158. finished work

  1159. that we

  1160. don't have

  1161. to earn

  1162. for ourselves,

  1163. we receive

  1164. it as a

  1165. gift of

  1166. his grace

  1167. and there is

  1168. peace in

  1169. that because

  1170. our salvation

  1171. and our

  1172. eternal

  1173. security does

  1174. not depend

  1175. on me and

  1176. my effort.

  1177. It depends

  1178. on me looking

  1179. to Christ and

  1180. clinging to

  1181. him and

  1182. trusting in

  1183. what he

  1184. has done.

  1185. And we

  1186. also hear

  1187. Jesus on

  1188. the cross

  1189. say,

  1190. into your

  1191. hands I

  1192. commit my

  1193. spirit.

  1194. Jesus ready

  1195. to be received

  1196. back to

  1197. return to

  1198. glory with

  1199. his father

  1200. and Jesus

  1201. had already

  1202. said to his

  1203. disciples that

  1204. where he

  1205. would go

  1206. his people

  1207. would follow.

  1208. Here is a

  1209. promise of

  1210. eternal

  1211. lasting peace

  1212. in the

  1213. glorious presence

  1214. of our

  1215. God and

  1216. our Savior

  1217. in a world

  1218. made new,

  1219. in a world

  1220. free of sin,

  1221. in a world

  1222. free of

  1223. virus and

  1224. the threat

  1225. of death,

  1226. all because

  1227. of Jesus.

  1228. What promise

  1229. can we rely

  1230. on?

  1231. What peace

  1232. will never

  1233. fail us?

  1234. Jesus said,

  1235. in this

  1236. world you

  1237. will have

  1238. trouble.

  1239. And the

  1240. coronavirus is

  1241. just one

  1242. example,

  1243. isn't it?

  1244. We've lived

  1245. long enough,

  1246. we know there

  1247. are many

  1248. troubles,

  1249. but it's

  1250. certainly a

  1251. wake-up call

  1252. to how

  1253. fragile life

  1254. is.

  1255. And one of

  1256. the things

  1257. that we can

  1258. do as a

  1259. church,

  1260. as Christians,

  1261. is to pray

  1262. that God

  1263. would use

  1264. this in

  1265. his wisdom,

  1266. in his

  1267. mercy,

  1268. in his

  1269. desire to

  1270. save,

  1271. that he

  1272. would open

  1273. people's

  1274. hearts and

  1275. minds at

  1276. this time

  1277. to the

  1278. goodness of

  1279. Jesus.

  1280. But Jesus

  1281. said,

  1282. more than in

  1283. this world

  1284. you will have

  1285. trouble,

  1286. he also said,

  1287. take heart,

  1288. I have

  1289. overcome the

  1290. world.

  1291. He said,

  1292. do not let

  1293. your hearts

  1294. be troubled,

  1295. you believe in

  1296. God,

  1297. believe also in

  1298. me.

  1299. Here is the

  1300. peace that all

  1301. our hearts are

  1302. longing for,

  1303. is found

  1304. and trusting in

  1305. Jesus,

  1306. Jesus' death,

  1307. Jesus'

  1308. resurrection.

  1309. That's the

  1310. hope and the

  1311. peace that a

  1312. dying world

  1313. needs.

  1314. So as we

  1315. consider the

  1316. words of

  1317. Jacob, as we

  1318. consider the

  1319. words of

  1320. Jesus, let me

  1321. invite all of

  1322. us to

  1323. repent of

  1324. sin and

  1325. unbelief,

  1326. to believe in

  1327. Jesus, to

  1328. trust the

  1329. promises of

  1330. God, to

  1331. find true

  1332. rest, not

  1333. in people or

  1334. things,

  1335. circumstances,

  1336. to find true

  1337. rest in

  1338. Jesus.

  1339. Let's pray

  1340. together.
