  1. God, thank you so much for everyone who's here,

  2. for all the regular Church of Maasai people,

  3. for all our guests.

  4. Most of all, thank you that you're here.

  5. God, you are not our guest of honor.

  6. You're the reason that we're here.

  7. And we come to you and we come to you with great expectancy,

  8. knowing that you who've spoken through the ages

  9. can speak again to us today.

  10. Would you please speak to us?

  11. But Lord, help us not just be those who hear your word

  12. and go on unchanged.

  13. Help us to hear your word,

  14. to hear it spoken into our lives.

  15. Into the deep places of our hearts,

  16. of our minds, of all who we are.

  17. And would you help us to change?

  18. God, I'm barely more than a child.

  19. For this to be the case, for you to speak to us,

  20. I need your help.

  21. So please speak through the power of your Holy Spirit.

  22. In Jesus' name, amen.

  23. Please be seated.

  24. I remember when I was a boy,

  25. I was having a sleepover with one of my best friends,

  26. Dan Damien, his little brother Michael,

  27. and my big brother Josh were all at my parents' home.

  28. So much fun.

  29. And my parents, they love us,

  30. they gave us a lot of freedom,

  31. but they also gave some guidelines because they love us.

  32. And so one of those guidelines meant there was,

  33. I can't remember what hour it was,

  34. but there was a certain hour

  35. by which we had to turn the light off and go to sleep.

  36. It was later than we normally get to go to bed,

  37. but we were so stoked.

  38. This was my best friend.

  39. We saw each other every single day.

  40. And so we were there,

  41. and I just remember we were having so much fun.

  42. We had no idea what time it was,

  43. and we were talking,

  44. and my back,

  45. I was facing the window in the room,

  46. so my back was to the door.

  47. And we were all like being pretty loud,

  48. as some boys are.

  49. And all of a sudden,

  50. I remember,

  51. I still this day,

  52. I remember my brother Josh's face.

  53. It just went pale.

  54. And his eyes got kind of big,

  55. and he was trying to communicate something to me,

  56. his little brother.

  57. I'm his little brother.

  58. I didn't give a rip.

  59. I just,

  60. I do my thing.

  61. And so I was still talking,

  62. and finally,

  63. I was the only one talking,

  64. right?

  65. So I was like,

  66. hey,

  67. I have a lot of siblings.

  68. This was my moment.

  69. And so I was like,

  70. everyone's listening,

  71. right?

  72. So I'm just like,

  73. I don't know what I was doing.

  74. I just remember stupid.

  75. And then all of a sudden,

  76. I heard my father's voice.

  77. And my brother had been trying to communicate to me

  78. that my dad was at the door.

  79. Now,

  80. I'm the only one of all the guys at the sleepover

  81. that the sleepover ended for me right there.

  82. My dad brought me to the living room.

  83. It was actually,

  84. it was this cool house,

  85. where it used to be two different homes

  86. that were kind of combined.

  87. So when they brought me to the other part,

  88. like I was,

  89. I was in another house,

  90. basically.

  91. And same address,

  92. like different house.

  93. I was so frustrated.

  94. I like,

  95. why,

  96. why does my dad hate fun?

  97. Why does my dad hate me?

  98. Like,

  99. he's always been a great dad.

  100. But that moment,

  101. it was just like,

  102. the world was dark.

  103. I remember just,

  104. I had to,

  105. he put me on the couch.

  106. I just like,

  107. sleeping on the couch.

  108. I wasn't sleeping though.

  109. And I was just frustrated.

  110. And I just didn't understand

  111. why he was such a killjoy.

  112. And I just went to sleep in a bad mood.

  113. My brother Josh's face,

  114. I,

  115. that,

  116. that,

  117. that look of like,

  118. of concern,

  119. of trying to communicate,

  120. is the voice of Amos in this passage.

  121. It really is.

  122. And if you just look at it,

  123. like even my brother's face,

  124. I remember like,

  125. what,

  126. like what's your deal,

  127. man?

  128. Like why,

  129. why are you being a killjoy right now?

  130. Like he just went from laughter.

  131. As a boy,

  132. all I wanted was for,

  133. to make people laugh.

  134. And he wasn't laughing.

  135. And woe to you who desire the day of the Lord.

  136. Why would you have the day of the Lord?

  137. It is darkness and not light.

  138. As if a man fled from a lion,

  139. and a bear met him,

  140. or went into his house,

  141. and leaned his hand against the wall,

  142. and a serpent bit him.

  143. Is not the day of the Lord darkness and not light,

  144. and gloom with no brightness in it?

  145. The people of Israel,

  146. the people of God,

  147. they were going through different things,

  148. different times.

  149. The time that Amos is writing in

  150. is the time of relative affluency.

  151. The middle class is doing well.

  152. They're very spiritual.

  153. And yet there was rumblings around them

  154. as the big empires of Assyria,

  155. the different ones were growing,

  156. and they were eating up these different places.

  157. And so there's definitely,

  158. on the one hand,

  159. a lot of confidence in themselves.

  160. At the same time,

  161. there's a lot of laughter,

  162. a lot of good stuff.

  163. At the same time,

  164. there's this growing sense of dread

  165. some people had in fear.

  166. And yet the people of God,

  167. they really had this confidence,

  168. not just in how affluent they were,

  169. but that no matter what happened,

  170. the day of the Lord was coming.

  171. The day of the Lord,

  172. the day of judgment,

  173. the day of judgment

  174. for all the peoples around them,

  175. they thought.

  176. They thought because they were God's people,

  177. because they were believers,

  178. because they were spiritual,

  179. when God came,

  180. when God came to them as the Messiah,

  181. he was going to just crush

  182. all those who opposed God,

  183. and they would find

  184. that they were the big dogs.

  185. You see that same,

  186. like when Jesus is coming

  187. into Jerusalem on the donkey,

  188. and the people are going wild,

  189. they really believe

  190. that the Messiah is coming

  191. to destroy Rome.

  192. And even though that's like 400 years,

  193. like five, six,

  194. about 800 years after this is written,

  195. that same kind of confidence

  196. that this Messiah

  197. was going to just crush

  198. all the enemies of God,

  199. they had.

  200. Now that's a fair confidence they have.

  201. God is coming to crush the enemy.

  202. What they didn't understand

  203. is they actually had found themselves

  204. on the side of the enemy,

  205. despite all their spirituality.

  206. Woe to you who desire

  207. the day of the Lord.

  208. Why would you have

  209. the day of the Lord?

  210. It is darkness and not light.

  211. As if a man fled from a lion

  212. and a bear met him.

  213. In a sense,

  214. what he's saying right here

  215. is that in there,

  216. seeing that Assyria

  217. is like a lion,

  218. he's there to destroy them,

  219. and they're going,

  220. well, you know what?

  221. We're going to escape this lion

  222. because we're the people of God.

  223. And he's saying,

  224. you know what?

  225. Yeah, you'll escape the lion,

  226. but you'll be met by a hungry bear,

  227. and it's going to destroy you.

  228. The next image,

  229. or went into the house

  230. and leaned his hand against the wall.

  231. In your own home,

  232. and the aspect of leaning against something,

  233. it's one of a casual safety.

  234. You're safe in your own home,

  235. and the attitude of leaning your hand

  236. against the wall,

  237. you're chill right there.

  238. And he's saying,

  239. you're there in this casual safety.

  240. This is your safe place,

  241. your happy place.

  242. But what you think is a wall,

  243. a thing that holds a roof above your head,

  244. and that is something to lean on,

  245. casual safety.

  246. It actually is a serpent that will bite you.

  247. And who is that serpent here?

  248. Is it the devil?

  249. No, actually,

  250. he's comparing that,

  251. which they think is their safety,

  252. to something that will actually bring them down.

  253. In this passage,

  254. the serpent,

  255. as far as I can tell,

  256. is actually God.

  257. He's saying that that,

  258. it's just an analogy,

  259. he's not saying God's a serpent,

  260. but he's saying that

  261. this thing you think is your safety

  262. is actually going to bite.

  263. Is not the day of the Lord darkness

  264. and not light,

  265. and gloom with no brightness in it.

  266. Confusing words to the people hearing it then,

  267. maybe confusing to us now.

  268. It was confusing to me

  269. as I thought we were just having a good time,

  270. and my brother's face is trying to communicate,

  271. hey, there's something serious going on.

  272. He's trying to warn me,

  273. Daniel,

  274. if you keep doing your thing,

  275. you're going to get in trouble.

  276. And Amos is trying to communicate that to them.

  277. The next words are really intense.

  278. I hate,

  279. I despise your feasts.

  280. It's easy as we read these,

  281. these very negative words.

  282. For us to miss how good the people are doing.

  283. So let's read what's going on.

  284. What are the people actually up to?

  285. Your feasts,

  286. solemn assemblies,

  287. verse 22,

  288. burnt offerings,

  289. grain offerings,

  290. peace offerings,

  291. of your fat animals,

  292. your songs,

  293. melody of your harps.

  294. These people,

  295. when it says feasts,

  296. these are not like these Canaanite feasts

  297. where it's all orgies and crazy stuff.

  298. These,

  299. as far as we can tell,

  300. would be the feasts of God.

  301. The feasts of God,

  302. the feasts God commanded them to do.

  303. Passover,

  304. Sukkot,

  305. these feasts,

  306. these are good feasts.

  307. Solemn assemblies.

  308. Again,

  309. we're not talking about them burning their children in the fire

  310. as they had done at certain times.

  311. These solemn assemblies would probably,

  312. most likely,

  313. actually be things like church

  314. where the people of God are getting together

  315. to sing songs to God

  316. and to hear the Bible.

  317. Burnt offerings and grain offerings.

  318. These are the things God commanded them to do.

  319. And not only are they giving burnt offerings

  320. and peace offerings,

  321. but these are the fat animals.

  322. Remember Cain and Abel.

  323. One of the issues with,

  324. I always get it confused,

  325. Cain,

  326. Abel.

  327. Abel is the one who offered the right sacrifice.

  328. He was giving his best to God.

  329. And Cain seems to have been giving,

  330. Abel was giving the fat,

  331. the best sheep.

  332. And then Cain was kind of giving

  333. just of the other stuff.

  334. But here he's saying,

  335. you guys are giving,

  336. you guys are giving God the fat animal,

  337. the best you have of your animals.

  338. It's so good.

  339. I want to be,

  340. I want to be spiritual like that.

  341. I want to be faithful like that.

  342. And then there are also people

  343. who aren't just coming together,

  344. just being really solemn

  345. in their solemn assemblies,

  346. but they're people

  347. who are making a noise of songs

  348. that melody in their harps,

  349. they're singing.

  350. And yet,

  351. fill in the words we miss.

  352. We're just reading your feasts,

  353. your solemn assemblies,

  354. your burnt offerings.

  355. What is God's attitude,

  356. what is God's attitude

  357. toward these things?

  358. I hate,

  359. this isn't Amos speaking,

  360. he's just recording God's word.

  361. I hate,

  362. I despise your feasts,

  363. and I take no delight

  364. in your solemn assemblies.

  365. Even though you offer me

  366. your burnt offerings

  367. and grain offerings,

  368. I will not accept them.

  369. And the peace offerings

  370. of your fat animals,

  371. I will not look upon them.

  372. Take away from me

  373. the noise of your songs.

  374. To the melody of your harps,

  375. I will not listen.

  376. These are scary words.

  377. Because you can be

  378. doing a diagnostic

  379. of your life,

  380. how am I doing spiritually?

  381. And you would look at,

  382. you're doing the feasts,

  383. you're eating in the context,

  384. feasting in the context

  385. that God commanded.

  386. You're gathering together

  387. with the believers.

  388. The Bible says,

  389. don't forsake the gathering

  390. of the believers.

  391. They're not,

  392. they're doing it,

  393. they're solemn assemblies.

  394. And they're giving them

  395. some of their best stuff.

  396. And God says,

  397. I will not listen

  398. to your songs.

  399. That's a scary place to be.

  400. What else are you supposed to do?

  401. What else can you give God

  402. but your best?

  403. God won't have it.

  404. So what's going on?

  405. Verse 24,

  406. but let justice roll down

  407. like waters

  408. and righteousness

  409. like an ever-flowing stream.

  410. Did you bring,

  411. did you bring to me

  412. sacrifices and offerings

  413. during the 40 years

  414. in the wilderness,

  415. O host of Israel?

  416. You shall take up

  417. Sukkot, your king,

  418. and Kion, your star god,

  419. your images that you made

  420. for yourselves.

  421. And through these words,

  422. God is saying to them,

  423. you know what,

  424. yes, you're doing

  425. all the spiritual activity

  426. and maybe those around you

  427. and even yourself

  428. are impressed with yourself.

  429. But look what they're doing.

  430. These people have made

  431. for themselves

  432. these little idols.

  433. From reading commentaries

  434. this week,

  435. my understanding is that

  436. Sukkot,

  437. that these were these idols

  438. that they're like pocket idols

  439. that you can put in your pocket

  440. and take with you to work

  441. and you can have with you.

  442. And so these people

  443. were doing all the spiritual stuff,

  444. but they'd done

  445. what we call synchronism

  446. where they were doing

  447. both the stuff of God

  448. but also the stuff

  449. of the people around them.

  450. And God,

  451. because of that,

  452. says,

  453. I will not hear your singing.

  454. I despise your feasts

  455. and all your spiritual activity.

  456. Why is God so mad?

  457. Well, it's kind of like

  458. if you're married

  459. and say the husband

  460. says to his wife,

  461. like,

  462. say the wife saying to her husband,

  463. like,

  464. hey, like,

  465. you know what,

  466. I hate,

  467. I hate your vacuuming

  468. of the house.

  469. I despise your working hard

  470. to help pay rent.

  471. I despise your budgeting.

  472. I will not even look upon

  473. your playing with the kids

  474. before bedtime.

  475. And the husband's like,

  476. do you know that

  477. all the other wives

  478. wish that their husband

  479. did the things

  480. you just mentioned

  481. that I do?

  482. Like,

  483. I'm the husband

  484. that all the ladies

  485. wish their husband were.

  486. You know what I'm saying?

  487. And she's like,

  488. you do all these things,

  489. but you don't love me.

  490. And you don't even love

  491. the children.

  492. You're just doing it

  493. because it's a checklist

  494. of things.

  495. It makes you feel good

  496. about yourself,

  497. but you're selfish.

  498. And the husband's like,

  499. no, no, no, no, no.

  500. I, I,

  501. not only do,

  502. do I do these things,

  503. but you know what?

  504. Remember our vows?

  505. And he reads the vows.

  506. They're so beautiful vows.

  507. Just like they'd be,

  508. they'd be,

  509. and the psalm assemblies,

  510. they would be reading

  511. the words of the hero Israel,

  512. the Lord your God,

  513. the Lord is one.

  514. They'd be saying these things.

  515. And he's saying,

  516. you know,

  517. I'm,

  518. he reads his vows to her,

  519. expecting that she's going

  520. to tear up

  521. because they're so beautiful.

  522. He wrote his vows himself,

  523. you know,

  524. the creative people

  525. who do that at their weddings.

  526. And so he's like,

  527. you listen to this.

  528. And you know what, honey?

  529. I mean,

  530. I keep this on Sundays,

  531. on Tuesdays,

  532. Wednesdays,

  533. Fridays,

  534. and Saturdays.

  535. What more do you want?

  536. And she's like,

  537. exactly.

  538. Like,

  539. what about,

  540. I'm not going to math.

  541. What about those Mondays

  542. and like Thursdays

  543. where you're going on

  544. sleeping with other women?

  545. And he's like,

  546. you don't understand.

  547. I'm so with you

  548. and I'm with you.

  549. And when I'm with you,

  550. you're the only one

  551. in my mind.

  552. And she's like,

  553. what about Mondays

  554. and Thursdays

  555. and you're going

  556. and sleeping around?

  557. He's like,

  558. come on.

  559. I am paying rent.

  560. That's kind of the conversation

  561. going on right now

  562. where God is saying,

  563. you are so proud

  564. of your spiritual activity.

  565. You're doing,

  566. in our language,

  567. you're doing church.

  568. And you're the one,

  569. you're not giving 10%.

  570. You're giving 11%

  571. just because you can.

  572. And you understand

  573. that you're not just

  574. giving up your money

  575. but like you're also

  576. volunteering in Sunday school

  577. and you're doing

  578. all this great stuff

  579. and God's saying,

  580. it's not only

  581. do I not care about it

  582. but it stinks

  583. because somehow

  584. you think you're buying me off

  585. with those things

  586. when what I want

  587. is your love.

  588. What I want

  589. is your love,

  590. God is saying.

  591. But let justice

  592. roll down like waters.

  593. I can't read these words

  594. without hearing

  595. the much more epic

  596. Martin Luther King Jr.

  597. saying those words.

  598. But let justice

  599. roll down like waters.

  600. I'm not going to try

  601. to imitate him.

  602. But let justice

  603. roll down like waters.

  604. The image here

  605. is a cascading

  606. white water rapids

  607. into a waterfall.

  608. There's overwhelming,

  609. overflowing justice.

  610. Justice.

  611. What is justice?

  612. It's an all-encompassing

  613. right way of living.

  614. It is all these things

  615. that Amos has been speaking

  616. about chapter after chapter

  617. of saying,

  618. guys,

  619. you are trampling

  620. on the poor.

  621. Justice is caring

  622. for the poor.

  623. You guys are being

  624. sexually immoral.

  625. Justice includes

  626. sexual integrity.

  627. It includes all areas of life.

  628. It's a completely

  629. all-consumed devotion

  630. to what is right.

  631. Let justice roll down

  632. like waters

  633. and righteousness

  634. like an ever-flowing

  635. stream.

  636. God is saying to them,

  637. what I want

  638. isn't just all

  639. the spiritual activity.

  640. That's actually

  641. all really good things.

  642. But what I want

  643. is all of who you are.

  644. What I want

  645. is all of you.

  646. He doesn't want

  647. our synchronism.

  648. He doesn't want us

  649. to be trying to combine

  650. and merge

  651. our spirituality

  652. with our other stuff.

  653. God wants all that we are.

  654. He wants all of us.

  655. You know,

  656. the temptation

  657. for the people of God

  658. at this time

  659. was to begin

  660. combining their walk

  661. with God

  662. with the religions

  663. around them.

  664. And the Canaanite religion,

  665. I'm not an expert

  666. in Canaanite religion.

  667. I'm just getting this

  668. from others.

  669. But from what we can tell

  670. from history,

  671. the Canaanite religion

  672. was all about

  673. do's and don'ts,

  674. spiritual stuff.

  675. So you can do

  676. whatever you want to do.

  677. They're God's Moloch,

  678. whoever it was,

  679. Baal.

  680. They didn't really

  681. have anything,

  682. any requirements

  683. about your fidelity

  684. to your husband

  685. or wife.

  686. They didn't have anything

  687. about your sexual integrity.

  688. They didn't define

  689. those things.

  690. It was simply a religion

  691. of this is the type

  692. of sacrifice

  693. you bring to the God

  694. at this time of year.

  695. This is the type

  696. of feast you celebrate

  697. at this time.

  698. This is the type

  699. of thing you'll do

  700. on this day of the week.

  701. This is,

  702. and so as a result,

  703. you can live

  704. however you want to live,

  705. but you just got to do

  706. your spiritual things.

  707. And if you do that,

  708. then the gods

  709. will be favorable to you.

  710. And so the people

  711. of God see that

  712. and then they apply

  713. that to their own,

  714. to the scriptures.

  715. And they see

  716. that the scriptures

  717. call us to spiritual activity.

  718. And so like,

  719. okay,

  720. you know what,

  721. we're not just going

  722. to do the minimum.

  723. We're just going

  724. to max out

  725. and all these,

  726. the feasts,

  727. we'll celebrate them

  728. like no one's ever

  729. celebrated them.

  730. And God is saying,

  731. you know,

  732. I'm not like,

  733. I'm not like

  734. the Canaanite religion

  735. where if you just

  736. give me your lip service

  737. and you sing me the songs

  738. and you pour out

  739. your wine offering,

  740. your libations

  741. and all that stuff,

  742. then I'm pleased

  743. with you.

  744. No,

  745. I don't want

  746. your sacrifice.

  747. I want you.

  748. I don't want

  749. your sacrifice.

  750. I want you.

  751. Now the temptation

  752. for these guys,

  753. the people of God

  754. at this time,

  755. to be like the people

  756. around them,

  757. would be to have

  758. little pocket idols,

  759. things that you can touch

  760. and feel throughout the day

  761. if you're feeling

  762. a little nervous,

  763. little superstition,

  764. stuff like that.

  765. And God is saying,

  766. no,

  767. I want you.

  768. I don't want that.

  769. And what is the temptation

  770. for you and me?

  771. I don't know if there are

  772. people here who maybe

  773. you have a Hindu background

  774. and so you're tempted

  775. to like have some

  776. little idol figurines

  777. and like bow

  778. and whatever,

  779. give them food and stuff.

  780. There might be some of us here.

  781. If that's you,

  782. you're welcome here.

  783. I think for most of us,

  784. the temptation is actually

  785. to have a different God,

  786. which is ourselves.

  787. As some of you know,

  788. I'm at Camp Iowa

  789. and this past week,

  790. every week,

  791. we've been singing a song

  792. with a big,

  793. it's a really fun song.

  794. Mostly it's the band

  795. that we're playing the songs,

  796. but this one we put on

  797. like the background soundtrack

  798. and we have the actions to it.

  799. And it goes,

  800. my God is so big

  801. and so strong

  802. and so mighty.

  803. There's nothing

  804. my God cannot do.

  805. It's a full band.

  806. It's just,

  807. it's awesome.

  808. This past week,

  809. I discovered that the boys,

  810. it was Boys Week,

  811. and the boys made

  812. their own lyrics to it.

  813. And they were singing,

  814. my balls are so big

  815. and so strong

  816. and so mighty.

  817. There's nothing

  818. my balls cannot do.

  819. Okay?

  820. Now you look shocked.

  821. I just said that.

  822. That's what they were singing.

  823. And what I actually appreciate

  824. about their song

  825. is they put to lyrics

  826. what so many of us

  827. do with our lives.

  828. These boys,

  829. I spoke to them

  830. at the primetime,

  831. the preaching session.

  832. I said,

  833. you guys think you're so funny.

  834. And to be honest,

  835. privately,

  836. I'm thinking in my head

  837. like you guys

  838. are actually so funny.

  839. But I'm just like,

  840. you guys think you're so funny

  841. singing about your balls.

  842. Just in case

  843. if there's any generational gap.

  844. They're singing about

  845. their testicles.

  846. Okay?

  847. You guys think you're so funny.

  848. Okay?

  849. But listen,

  850. you guys,

  851. you're settling

  852. for something so small

  853. and so insignificant.

  854. You think you've discovered

  855. how to,

  856. oh, you guys,

  857. you guys are the cool kids.

  858. You guys,

  859. you've invented your own lyrics.

  860. But what you've done

  861. is as if someone

  862. has given you the keys

  863. to a magnificent castle.

  864. It's amazing.

  865. You never,

  866. it's not the stuff

  867. you dreamed of.

  868. It's bigger than

  869. the stuff you dreamed of.

  870. And you like hockey?

  871. There's a skating arena there

  872. or ice rink,

  873. I guess we call them.

  874. Whatever.

  875. You know,

  876. it's got everything you want.

  877. All the toys

  878. and so much more.

  879. It's so fun.

  880. It's such an adventure.

  881. You can explore

  882. the halls

  883. and all the different aspects

  884. of the castle

  885. forever and ever.

  886. And you'll never

  887. discover all of it.

  888. It's made for sardines,

  889. the game.

  890. You know,

  891. like it's unreal.

  892. And yet you guys,

  893. I come across you.

  894. I'm your buddy.

  895. I come and you guys

  896. are making sandcastles.

  897. You're like,

  898. look at our castle.

  899. It's so big.

  900. It's so awesome.

  901. We're so cool.

  902. We made this ourselves.

  903. And look,

  904. like it's not just like

  905. we made like our own moat

  906. and we have water

  907. and we even have

  908. like little fishes in it.

  909. Like look at us.

  910. And you're like,

  911. okay,

  912. that's cool.

  913. But you know

  914. there's a real moat

  915. with real castle walls

  916. with a real castle

  917. right behind you

  918. and you have settled

  919. for a sandcastle.

  920. And then as I was chatting

  921. with them,

  922. I was like,

  923. you know what?

  924. That's a bad analogy.

  925. What you actually are doing

  926. is you haven't made

  927. a sandcastle.

  928. I'm sorry,

  929. I'm at camp

  930. but it's a little more

  931. gritty.

  932. You haven't made a sandcastle.

  933. You've made a poop castle.

  934. You actually have taken manure

  935. and not just like horse manure.

  936. Like you've taken human feces

  937. and you're making

  938. your own little castle.

  939. Like this is so cool.

  940. We have a castle.

  941. We're so good.

  942. And it's like actually

  943. you have first

  944. a massive castle

  945. that's awesome

  946. right behind you

  947. that's actually bigger

  948. than anything

  949. you can ever imagine.

  950. That'd be such

  951. a great adventure.

  952. And you've settled

  953. for something so insignificant

  954. that's actually like poop

  955. bad for you

  956. and bad for those

  957. that you're interacting with.

  958. It's infecting them.

  959. It's full of germs and stuff.

  960. When we're wrapped up

  961. with ourselves

  962. when we're living a life

  963. that's like you're singing

  964. my balls are so big

  965. when that's your life

  966. when all you are

  967. is consumed with yourself

  968. and don't just picture

  969. the boys here.

  970. What about our own selfishness?

  971. For some of us

  972. our laziness

  973. our apathy

  974. for others of us

  975. it's our hard working

  976. workaholism

  977. where we're neglecting

  978. those who God

  979. has entrusted to our care

  980. because we are so obsessed

  981. with our own achievements.

  982. Whatever it is

  983. when we're obsessed

  984. when our life

  985. is about ourselves

  986. really we might be thinking

  987. you know I've cracked

  988. the code to life

  989. like I've found

  990. the key to my happiness

  991. my working crazy hard

  992. and getting all the toys

  993. or whatever it is.

  994. You're settling

  995. for something

  996. that's so much

  997. less awesome.

  998. And I don't just mean

  999. like less good

  1000. or less justice

  1001. or less righteous

  1002. I mean less awesome.

  1003. It's actually

  1004. so much less

  1005. of an adventure.

  1006. There's less joy

  1007. in it

  1008. there's actually

  1009. less peace

  1010. in it

1011. it's not what you want

  1012. but you've settled

  1013. for this

  1014. and you're like

  1015. oh I'm so cool

  1016. and it's like

  1017. not only is this

  1018. so much less awesome

  1019. but it's actually

  1020. harming yourself

  1021. and others.

1022. Is that what you want?

  1023. Every time we do

  1024. synchronism

  1025. every time we combine

1026. God with the other stuff

  1027. every time we say

  1028. God I give you

  1029. my Sundays

  1030. and my Wednesday nights

  1031. or some of you

  1032. also your Friday mornings

  1033. not just you

  1034. some of us

  1035. that's what we're doing

  1036. and God

  1037. 800

  1038. in 800 BC

  1039. 2,800 years ago

  1040. and still today

  1041. is saying

  1042. please

  1043. please

  1044. give me yourself

  1045. and it sounds

  1046. very sobering

  1047. because it is

  1048. woe to you

  1049. who desire

1050. the day of the Lord

  1051. why would you have

1052. the day of the Lord

  1053. it is dark

  1054. so not light

  1055. as if man fled

  1056. from light

  1057. these words

  1058. are serious

  1059. these words

  1060. are haunting

  1061. these words

  1062. are words of fear

  1063. just like I saw

  1064. my brother's face

1065. there was a look of fear

  1066. and he was trying

  1067. to communicate

  1068. something to me

  1069. and if I'd

  1070. embraced that message

  1071. as difficult

1072. as it would have been

1073. for me as a boy

  1074. and even today

  1075. to shut up

  1076. I would have just

  1077. embraced that message

  1078. just be quiet

  1079. when he was trying

  1080. to be like

  1081. I would have still

  1082. been in that sleepover

  1083. well not still

  1084. to this day

1085. but I would have gone

  1086. to live out

  1087. the sleepover

  1088. that's what my

  1089. parents had wanted

  1090. for me

  1091. was to have fun

  1092. and to live

  1093. the fullness

  1094. of that sleepover

1095. but I lost out big

1096. at least to my little

  1097. boy mind

  1098. I lost out big

1099. it was a look of fear

  1100. in my brother's eyes

  1101. but that fear

  1102. was because of his

  1103. love for me

  1104. and he wanted me

  1105. to stay part

  1106. of the party

  1107. and as God

  1108. through Amos

  1109. is speaking

  1110. these heavy words

  1111. they're words

  1112. not just of fear

  1113. they're words of love

  1114. they're words of health

  1115. they're words of restoration

  1116. there did come

  1117. a time of judgment

  1118. but these words

  1119. were warning

  1120. and in the warning

  1121. there's a possibility

  1122. that things could change

  1123. in the warning

  1124. there's a possibility

  1125. that things could change

  1126. church

  1127. regulars

  1128. guests

  1129. everyone

  1130. myself included

  1131. there are things

  1132. in our lives

  1133. that need to change

  1134. there is areas

  1135. in our life

  1136. where it's like

  1137. we're singing

1138. my balls are so big

  1139. where we're selfish

  1140. where we're self-focused

  1141. we're synchronizing

  1142. our stuff with God

1143. for a lot of us

  1144. me included

1145. it might be hard to see

1146. so how do we change

  1147. don't worry about it

  1148. you can just pray

  1149. go on

  1150. you don't actually

  1151. need to change

  1152. just kidding

  1153. we need to change

  1154. it's going to be

  1155. tough to change

  1156. one of the toughest

  1157. things is to actually

  1158. see it

  1159. we want to think

  1160. that we're all that

  1161. I want to think

  1162. that I'm all that

  1163. but God calls us

  1164. to change

  1165. we need to change

1166. and so this is the

1167. hardest part of the message

  1168. how do we change

  1169. I think the toughest

  1170. thing about changing

1171. is that God is saying

  1172. right here

  1173. I don't just want

  1174. your actions

  1175. I want your hearts

1176. and we can give God

  1177. our actions

1178. but how do we give

  1179. him our heart

1180. how do we do that

  1181. like tell me

  1182. I think a lot of husbands

1183. are here when their wife

  1184. is like

  1185. or vice versa

1186. a wife can be there

  1187. when the husband's like

1188. hey I want your heart

  1189. I want your love

1190. and the spouse is like

  1191. look

  1192. I've given you this

  1193. I've given you that

  1194. I've given you that

  1195. and in a sense

  1196. it's just like

  1197. just tell me

  1198. one more thing

  1199. three more things

  1200. give me a list

1201. of things I can do

  1202. for you

  1203. and we're cool

  1204. and they're like

  1205. no you miss it

  1206. I want your love

  1207. I want your heart

1208. we can adopt more actions

  1209. how do we change

  1210. our hearts

  1211. it begins with

  1212. realizing we can't

  1213. I think it was

  1214. last week

  1215. I think it was

  1216. last week

  1217. that I was sharing

  1218. with you that

  1219. when I was about 16

  1220. I realized

1221. that I knew so much

  1222. about God

  1223. I loved so much

  1224. about God

  1225. I knew I knew him

  1226. as a kid

  1227. I just didn't

  1228. I just didn't know him

1229. he didn't have my heart

  1230. and I tried

1231. he just didn't have my heart

  1232. and so I just

  1233. got on my knees

  1234. and I said

  1235. God

1236. I need to know you

1237. help me to love you

1238. two things I was praying

  1239. at the time

1240. God I want to know you

1241. I want to love you

  1242. I knew that I didn't

  1243. at least not fully

1244. like I was made for

  1245. I told you

  1246. I prayed that

  1247. real earnest

1248. God I want to know you

1249. God I want to know you

1250. I need to know you

  1251. you're too good

  1252. to be my parents

  1253. thing

  1254. you're too

  1255. if all that's true

  1256. about you

  1257. is true

  1258. what the pastor's saying

  1259. and I see

1260. the sparkle in his eye

  1261. that he loves

  1262. and knows you

  1263. I need that

  1264. give that to me

1265. I want to know you

1266. I get up off my knees

  1267. because I had others

1268. that had to go to school

  1269. still nothing

  1270. day after day

1271. it took way too long

  1272. day after day

1273. God I need to know you

  1274. there's probably

  1275. multiple days

  1276. where I didn't pray that

1277. because I was wrapped up

  1278. in myself again

1279. then I get back on my knees

1280. God I need to know you

  1281. please

1282. I need to know you

1283. we were talking last week

1284. about seek me and live

  1285. but I didn't understand

  1286. that whole time

1287. as much as I felt like

1288. I was the one seeking

  1289. the love

  1290. the knowing of God

1291. the Bible is so so clear

1292. God is the one seeking us

1293. he's the one loving us

  1294. he's the one seeking

  1295. the image is that

  1296. of the prodigal son

  1297. in Jesus' own words

  1298. when the guy

  1299. he realizes he's not

1300. where he needs to be

  1301. he realizes he's like

  1302. these people

1303. maybe he's of the people

  1304. of God

  1305. but he's living like

  1306. the pagans really

1307. and so he's walking home

1308. and he's rehearsing his lines

1309. and he's trying to seek God

  1310. kind of like me

1311. like he's saying his stuff

1312. and then when the father

1313. when all of a sudden

  1314. he looks up

  1315. the father has been

  1316. searching for him

1317. the father was the one

  1318. seeking the son

  1319. the whole time

  1320. way before the son

  1321. was seeking him

1322. and the father is the one

  1323. that runs

  1324. not the son

1325. he runs to the son

  1326. and he embraces him

1327. the son tries to start

  1328. saying his words

  1329. his spiritual words

  1330. and the father

  1331. interrupts him

  1332. and he just says

  1333. he just says

  1334. like let's throw a party

  1335. my son is home

  1336. and he wraps him

  1337. in the robes

1338. and gives him his best

  1339. and all this stuff

  1340. in a sense

  1341. I was seeking God

  1342. and seeking him

1343. the Bible tells us to

  1344. but what I didn't understand

1345. was even in my seeking him

  1346. that was empowered

1347. by the very breath of God

1348. so where do we go church

1349. to be fully the people

1350. he's called us to be

  1351. I know there's testimonies

  1352. throughout here

  1353. so many of you

  1354. are even more committed

  1355. to God than me

  1356. but all of us

  1357. all of us

1358. can grow in the fullness

  1359. of our commitment

  1360. to him

  1361. and listen

  1362. if you're not actually

1363. committed to him at all

1364. you are in a dangerous place

1365. so how do we change

  1366. knowing it's God

  1367. who's seeking us

  1368. let's begin

  1369. or continue

  1370. with that same prayer

  1371. God

  1372. God

  1373. I'm not completely

  1374. given to you

  1375. I see their selfishness

  1376. or maybe I can't see it

  1377. but I'm sure it's there

1378. God would you change my heart

  1379. change my heart

  1380. give me

  1381. refresh my heart

  1382. renew my heart

  1383. give me your heart

1384. help me to love you

1385. not just the stuff of you

  1386. it begins

  1387. I believe in prayer

  1388. pray

  1389. and pray

  1390. and pray

  1391. seek him

  1392. and live

  1393. knowing that he's

  1394. the one seeking us

  1395. our very crying out

  1396. is empowered by him

  1397. and then second

  1398. what God's saying here

  1399. and saying

  1400. let justice rule

  1401. he's saying

  1402. this isn't just about

  1403. your spiritual stuff

1404. this is an all of life thing

  1405. people have said

  1406. look

1407. if you really want to know

  1408. your priorities

  1409. don't listen to someone's words

  1410. look at their pocketbook

1411. what are they spending money on

1412. look at their day planner

1413. if people still do that

1414. look at what you're spending

  1415. your time on

  1416. and in that respect

1417. as we seek to give our life

  1418. completely to God

1419. not just to the spiritual

1420. to all of our life

  1421. to God

1422. then let's start looking at

  1423. how we're spending money

  1424. and what we're doing

  1425. with our time

  1426. and seeing

  1427. are we actually

  1428. giving ourselves to God

  1429. how our friendships

  1430. our marriages

  1431. our sexuality

  1432. are we defining

  1433. our own terms

  1434. are we seeking to

1435. to let the Bible define

  1436. what is actually right

  1437. and good

  1438. and sometimes people

  1439. will talk to me

  1440. because I'm the pastor

  1441. and they'll say like

  1442. hey you know

1443. can you pray for me

1444. that I spend more time

1445. in the Bible this week

  1446. and that's another

  1447. we begin in prayer

  1448. but also the Bible

  1449. spiritual food

1450. it's so much of the strength

1451. that we need to change

1452. it's going to be found

1453. as we read these words

  1454. so they're saying

1455. hey I'm not reading my Bible

1456. I'm not really praying much

1457. can you pray that I do

  1458. but you know what

1459. I'm never going to say no

  1460. to prayer

  1461. I'll pray for you

1462. but you actually just need

  1463. to do it

1464. you know what I'm saying

  1465. like you just

  1466. you don't need

  1467. you don't need me

  1468. to pray for you

1469. you just need to actually

1470. when you go to reach

  1471. for your phone

  1472. to check Facebook

  1473. in the morning

1474. just bring back the hand

  1475. grab the Bible

  1476. spend like three

  1477. four or five minutes

  1478. at least

  1479. if not longer

  1480. reading a bit

1481. you know what I'm saying

1482. sometimes you just got to do it

1483. just got to gird up your loins

1484. in the words of scripture

  1485. just do it

1486. you know what I'm saying

1487. so how do we change

  1488. part of it

1489. is by just crying out for help

1490. and crying out for help

1491. all the way to the end of our life

1492. God help me to change

1493. I want to know you more completely

1494. I'm not satisfied with where I'm at

1495. you have more for me

1496. I want to be fully yours

  1497. and second

1498. is that we do what it says

1499. that we read the words

  1500. and we seek

1501. we see as we read through the scriptures

1502. that it's speaking into our life

  1503. and showing us

1504. where we're actually not devoted to God

  1505. and seeking to change

  1506. praying

  1507. and then applying

  1508. justice

  1509. and righteousness

  1510. and purity

  1511. and humility

  1512. and courage

  1513. and faithfulness

  1514. rolling

  1515. like overflowing

  1516. cascading

1517. all that our lives are

  1518. it's how we change

  1519. we look to God

  1520. one of the temptations

  1521. I can't say for all pastors

  1522. one of my temptations

1523. is I want to make sure

1524. that I'm saying something new

  1525. and innovative and stuff

  1526. but

  1527. then you come across

  1528. where you're just like

  1529. you know what

1530. I'm just going to be repeating myself

  1531. every single week

1532. and we're going to do that again

  1533. because

1534. that's what the Bible says

  1535. so there's nothing new

  1536. or innovative here

  1537. that's just the Bible

  1538. this section ends up

  1539. as he's saying

  1540. he's calling them

  1541. to a full

  1542. wholehearted

  1543. full throttled

  1544. life with God

  1545. his final words

  1546. of this passage are

  1547. says the Lord

1548. whose name is the God

  1549. of armies

  1550. again

  1551. and again

  1552. and again

  1553. the call

  1554. to become

1555. who we're called to be

1556. to leave the poo castles

1557. and live in a life

  1558. of obedience

  1559. and surrender

  1560. in the fullness

  1561. of the adventure

  1562. of life with God

  1563. how

  1564. where does our hope

  1565. come from for that

  1566. time and time

  1567. week after week

1568. you see Amos is saying

  1569. the Lord of armies

  1570. one of the problems

  1571. we have with changing

  1572. especially

  1573. when what we need

  1574. to change from

  1575. is self-obsession

1576. is that we turn inward

  1577. to change

  1578. and that's why

  1579. so many of those

  1580. self-help books

  1581. you see

  1582. at chapters

  1583. or the stuff

  1584. you google

  1585. is not helpful

  1586. because it's just

  1587. trying to turn

  1588. ourselves inward

  1589. to find the strength

  1590. to change

  1591. but Amos' solution

  1592. to changing

  1593. is to say

  1594. stop

  1595. you guys

  1596. you think

  1597. you're so funny

  1598. or whatever

  1599. singing about

  1600. your own

  1601. your testicle

  1602. like look at God

  1603. what those boys

  1604. needed this week

1605. I think what we were

  1606. able to speak

  1607. to them about

  1608. was

  1609. guys

  1610. you think

  1611. that life

  1612. obsessed about

  1613. your own prowess

  1614. so big

  1615. and so bad

  1616. look what you need

  1617. look at God

  1618. who's so big

  1619. and so mighty

  1620. there's nothing

  1621. he cannot do

  1622. I believe that's

  1623. the message

  1624. that Amos is trying

  1625. to say to them

  1626. as he says

  1627. God of armies

  1628. there's power

  1629. there's might

  1630. and there's action

  1631. there

  1632. our God

  1633. isn't just

  1634. a God

  1635. who's big

  1636. sitting on a throne

  1637. looking at us

  1638. and tsk tsk

  1639. no he's the father

  1640. searching out there

  1641. with his armies

  1642. looking for us

  1643. seeking us

  1644. that we might live

  1645. like

  1646. just one final word

  1647. then we're done

  1648. we'll have

  1649. work with strength

  1650. to fight

  1651. it's a ministry

  1652. helping people

  1653. find freedom

  1654. from porn

  1655. and a couple

  1656. months ago

  1657. a pastor was

  1658. meeting with us

  1659. talking about

  1660. how he and his

  1661. church can

  1662. work with us

  1663. and he was

  1664. talking about

  1665. how he was

  1666. so passionate

  1667. about purity

  1668. and all this stuff

  1669. and porn is tied

  1670. to human trafficking

  1671. so about fighting

  1672. human trafficking

  1673. and he was telling

  1674. us his testimony

  1675. about being free

  1676. of porn

  1677. and so

  1678. one of my

  1679. colleagues

  1680. with strength

  1681. to fight

  1682. just had the

  1683. wisdom to say

  1684. like hey

  1685. when was the

  1686. last time

  1687. you watched

  1688. porn

  1689. and he was

  1690. like uh

  1691. two weeks ago

  1692. and then he's

  1693. like okay

  1694. how long was it

  1695. since before that

  1696. he's like well

  1697. about a month

  1698. like oh yeah

  1699. like I'm free

  1700. I only watch

  1701. porn once a month

  1702. and we're like

  1703. and he's like

  1704. anyway

  1705. it's still actually

  1706. a regular consistent

  1707. part of this man's

  1708. life

  1709. and you know

  1710. what that's true

  1711. likely for several

  1712. number of people

  1713. here

  1714. or maybe even

  1715. more true

  1716. like there's

  1717. likely people

  1718. among us

  1719. who uh

  1720. who are watching

  1721. even more

  1722. regular than

  1723. that

  1724. that's one

  1725. of the ways

  1726. this passage

  1727. comes alive

  1728. for us

  1729. is to see

  1730. that like

  1731. this pastor

  1732. is basically

  1733. like hey

  1734. you know

  1735. what I'm

  1736. gonna do

  1737. all these

  1738. like his

  1739. version of

  1740. the feasts

  1741. is justice

  1742. his version

  1743. of the feasts

  1744. is like okay

  1745. I am volunteering

  1746. with fight

  1747. for freedom

  1748. we're helping

  1749. rescue girls

  1750. from you know

  1751. sexual exploitation

  1752. um god

  1753. aren't you so

  1754. happy with me

  1755. but at the same

  1756. time he was

  1757. holding on

  1758. to sexual

  1759. impurity

  1760. in his case

  1761. pornography

  1762. holding on

  1763. to it

  1764. this is

  1765. this is

  1766. okay I'll

  1767. give up

  1768. once a week

  1769. I'll give up

  1770. multiple times

  1771. a day

  1772. I'll give all

  1773. that up

  1774. but once a

  1775. month that's

  1776. me time

  1777. that's my

  1778. life my

  1779. terms

  1780. and it's

  1781. actually awesome

  1782. that that

  1783. god is

  1784. through his

  1785. that he's

  1786. worked at it

  1787. and god

  1788. that it's

  1789. down to

  1790. once a

  1791. month

  1792. I'm sure

  1793. that's actually

  1794. a big miracle

  1795. a huge step

  1796. for him

  1797. but what god

  1798. would be saying

  1799. to him

  1800. I try to

  1801. share with

  1802. him

  1803. I'm gonna

  1804. share with

  1805. myself and

  1806. all of us

  1807. today

  1808. whatever those

  1809. things are

  1810. that like

  1811. god you've

  1812. done so much

  1813. in my life

  1814. but no more

  1815. now this is

  1816. me

  1817. you can have

  1818. all of me

  1819. up until this

  1820. god is saying

  1821. to the people

  1822. of Israel

  1823. in Amos

    Amos 5 chapter mention

  1824. chapter 5

  1825. like he's

  1826. speaking to

  1827. us I believe

  1828. today right

  1829. now and

  1830. for the rest

  1831. of our lives

  1832. give me

  1833. everything

  1834. all of it

  1835. and that's

  1836. not some

  1837. burdensome

  1838. command

  1839. that is

  1840. an invitation

  1841. to life

  1842. itself

  1843. would you

  1844. stand with

  1845. me as

  1846. you pray

  1847. god you

  1848. see

  1849. everything

  1850. so often

  1851. like Adam

  1852. and Eve

  1853. we want to

  1854. hide ourselves

  1855. as if that

  1856. does anything

  1857. against your

  1858. gaze

  1859. you see

  1860. everything

  1861. you know

  1862. you know

  1863. the selfishness

  1864. the self

  1865. obsession

  1866. the idolatry

  1867. and the

  1868. synchronism

  1869. in every

  1870. one of us

  1871. you see

  1872. where we

  1873. flatter ourselves

  1874. and lie to

  1875. ourselves

  1876. and don't

  1877. even see

  1878. the blind

  1879. spots

  1880. and the

  1881. sin

  1882. lord you

  1883. see it

  1884. in all

  1885. of us

  1886. and

  1887. we ask

  1888. in your

  1889. mercy

  1890. and your

  1891. love

  1892. that you

  1893. would

  1894. free us

  1895. from those

  1896. poop castles

  1897. that we

  1898. play with

  1899. and lead

  1900. us

  1901. in the

  1902. safety

  1903. and the

  1904. wholeness

  1905. and the

  1906. risky

  1907. adventure

  1908. and all

  1909. that you

  1910. made us

  1911. for

  1912. for life

  1913. unleashed

  1914. for your

  1915. glory

  1916. we cannot

  1917. heal

  1918. ourselves

  1919. we cannot

  1920. change

  1921. ourselves

  1922. we do

  1923. not have

  1924. the strength

  1925. for we

  1926. are not

  1927. strong

  1928. and mighty

  1929. and there's

  1930. many things

  1931. that we

  1932. cannot do

  1933. but god

  1934. you are

  1935. so big

  1936. and so

  1937. strong

  1938. and so

  1939. mighty

  1940. would you

  1941. turn

  1942. the gaze

  1943. the attention

  1944. of our

  1945. heart

  1946. to you

  1947. the fullness

  1948. and the

  1949. bigness

  1950. and the

  1951. majesty

  1952. and the

  1953. power

  1954. and the

  1955. grandeur

  1956. and the

  1957. love

  1958. and all

  1959. that you

  1960. are

  1961. give us

  1962. the hope

  1963. the drive

  1964. the help

  1965. the humility

  1966. that we

  1967. need

  1968. to surrender

  1969. to you

  1970. so lord

  1971. would you

  1972. help all

  1973. of us

  1974. give you

  1975. all that

  1976. we are

  1977. not just

  1978. partial

  1979. but completely

  1980. to you

  1981. for in you

  1982. there is

  1983. life

  1984. life everlasting

  1985. in jesus name

  1986. amen

  1987. amen

  1988. and

  1989. you

  1990. you

  1991. you

  1992. you
