  1. we have been working our way through the letter of James,

  2. but I was conscious that with government restrictions,

  3. we don't know for how much longer we'll be able to meet

  4. before we have to sort of curtail activities.

  5. And so as much as I was enjoying working through James,

  6. decided for today to switch our attention to Psalm 46.

  7. So let's hear God's word.

  8. You'll find it on page 570 of the Church Bible, Psalm 46,

  9. and we'll read this whole psalm.

  10. God is our refuge and strength and ever-present help in trouble.

  11. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way

  12. and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,

  13. though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake

  14. with their surging.

  15. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,

  16. the holy place where the Most High dwells.

  17. God is within her.

  18. She will not fall.

  19. God will help her at break of day.

  20. Nations are in uproar.

  21. Kingdoms fall.

  22. He lifts his voice.

  23. He lifts his voice.

  24. The earth melts.

  25. The Lord Almighty is with us.

  26. The God of Jacob is our fortress.

  27. Come and see the works of the Lord,

  28. the desolations he has brought on the earth.

  29. He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth.

  30. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear.

  31. He burns the shields with fire.

  32. Be still and know that I am God.

  33. I will be exalted among the nations.

  34. I will be exalted in the earth.

  35. The Lord Almighty is with us.

  36. The God of Jacob is our fortress.

  37. One of those psalms that encourage the people of God

  38. to strong confidence and faith in God,

  39. even when crises emerge.

  40. Another psalm that reminds us of God's protective care

  41. that we're going to sing now is Psalm 121.

  42. We'll find this on page 416 of our blue 46 in your Bibles,

  43. page 570 in our church Bibles,

  44. as we think about trusting in our powerful and gracious Lord.

  45. This is one of these psalms where we find,

  46. in this case, the sons of Korah confessing faith

  47. in the heat of a battle.

  48. And we're not clear exactly what circumstance

  49. triggered the writing of this psalm,

  50. what particular trouble,

  51. if there was a particular trouble in mind.

  52. As we go through the psalms,

  53. we see various dangers and fears are mentioned.

  54. Natural disaster, political turmoil,

  55. enemies coming from outside Israel

  56. to wage war on the people of God.

  57. But there's no specific focus here.

  58. And that perhaps is part of its purpose.

  59. And certainly for us today,

  60. it's part of its value,

  61. because it means that you and I,

  62. regardless of what situation we find ourselves,

  63. regardless of what trouble we might find ourselves in,

  64. we can take hold of this psalm and its truths,

  65. and we can make it sing in our own hearts and lives.

  66. So today, we're all sort of caught up collectively

  67. in the trouble of the coronavirus.

  68. But there will also be situations and circumstances beyond that

  69. in our own personal lives,

  70. at home, at work.

  71. And there is truth, and there is comfort,

  72. and there is hope for the people of God

  73. in this wonderful psalm.

  74. It causes us to ask,

  75. can we honor God when trouble comes

  76. by trusting His power?

  77. Will we find confidence in a crisis

  78. as we draw comfort from looking to

  79. God's past acts of salvation?

  80. Will we be among those who can stand confidently

  81. on the promises of God

  82. when the floods and the storms of life come to us?

  83. Many people in our world today,

  84. and we know this to be true,

  85. are feeling overwhelmed,

  86. overwhelmed by all the information that's coming,

  87. overwhelmed by all the decisions that have to be made,

  88. overwhelmed by the consequences of those decisions.

  89. For us today,

  90. will we give attention to God and His Word?

  91. Will we find comfort and strength from His voice?

  92. Will we listen to Him more than we listen to those news reports?

  93. Can we catch hold of the character of God

  94. and the work of God

  95. so that we might have peace even when others panic

  96. because we have found this place of safety

  97. that the sons of Korah sing about?

  98. For us in the New Testament age,

  99. can we find peace as we look to Jesus

  100. as our Savior,

  101. as our Lord,

  102. as our King?

  103. I just want very briefly to look at this

  104. in the two sections.

  105. So we find a repeated refrain in verses 7 and 11,

  106. which serve as section markers for us.

  107. So in verse 1 to 7,

  108. one big point that we can see the psalmist making

  109. is that there is only one safe place

  110. in a dangerous world.

  111. The Bible is honest.

  112. The Bible will say to us

  113. that the world was created perfect,

  114. but because of sin,

  115. there's dislocation,

  116. brokenness,

  117. all is now not good,

  118. and now there is danger.

  119. But there's also confidence

  120. and hope presented in the Bible.

  121. We find it here in the psalm,

  122. beginning in verse 1.

  123. God is our refuge and strength

  124. and ever-present help in trouble.

  125. Here is the source of true security.

  126. It's God and God alone,

  127. not God plus our natural resources,

  128. not God plus our opportunities.

  129. It's God alone.

  130. And sometimes it takes a national and global crisis

  131. to draw us back,

  132. even as the people of God,

  133. to a simple loyalty to God as Lord.

  134. So we have our true security here.

  135. We are told of God as our refuge,

  136. the refuge that we run to,

  137. a salvation for us,

  138. providing shelter.

  139. We find God as a source of strength,

  140. positively the God who is acting

  141. and working for His people.

  142. Not only is He a shelter for us,

  143. He also acts for our good.

  144. And in verse 1,

  145. we're told that God is an ever-present help

  146. in times of trouble.

  147. God is always ready.

  148. God is always willing to be found,

  149. to be relied on,

  150. to be our rock and our refuge.

  151. We put our trust in other people

  152. and other things.

  153. Sometimes we find that they come through for us.

  154. Other times they're not able to

  155. for one reason or another.

  156. God is not like that.

  157. He is always an ever-present help

  158. in times of trouble.

  159. Our section alternates

  160. between these truths

  161. that we can find safety in God

  162. and also sections that show us danger

  163. in the world.

  164. So the first of these,

  165. verse 2 and 3,

  166. there are pictures of dangers

  167. in the natural world.

  168. Therefore we will not fear,

  169. though the earth give way

  170. and the mountains fall

  171. into the heart of the sea,

  172. though its waters roar and foam

  173. and the mountains quake

  174. with their surging.

  175. Here is a clash

  176. at one and the same time

  177. of the most unchanging

  178. and solid forces in our world,

  179. the earth and the mountains,

  180. with the forces of chaos,

  181. with surging waters.

  182. Even when it seems like

  183. the world is coming undone,

  184. the psalmist is saying,

  185. the people of God are safe

  186. and do not need to fear.

  187. Even in the midst of all the turmoil

  188. of natural disaster,

  189. the people of God

  190. are known, loved,

  191. and kept by God's care.

  192. There is another danger

  193. that the psalmist,

  194. they refer to

  195. in verses 5 and 6.

  196. Not this time,

  197. the raging of the forces of nature,

  198. but the raging of men

  199. against God and his people.

  200. In verse 5,

  201. God is within her.

  202. She will not fall.

  203. God will help her

  204. at break of day.

  205. Nations are in uproar.

  206. Kingdoms fall.

  207. He lifts his voice.

  208. The earth melts.

  209. So the picture here

  210. is of a city under siege.

  211. Jerusalem,

  212. the city of God

  213. under siege.

  214. The enemies of God

  215. attacking in their pride,

  216. looking to do away

  217. with God and his people.

  218. But here again,

  219. there is strong confidence

  220. for the people of God.

  221. Verse 5,

  222. God is within this city.

  223. ensuring that the people of God

  224. will not fall,

  225. ensuring the protection

  226. of his church.

  227. And in verse 6,

  228. when God lifts his voice,

  229. when God speaks in power,

  230. there is defeat

  231. of those rebel powers.

  232. There is nothing

  233. and no one greater

  234. than our God

  235. in all creation.

  236. Therefore,

  237. there is cause for faith.

  238. Israel,

  239. in their history,

  240. were taught

  241. to look back

  242. to their time

  243. in Egypt

  244. when God

  245. delivered them

  246. from the hand

  247. of Pharaoh

  248. in his determination

  249. to destroy

  250. the people of God,

  251. to remember

  252. God's redeeming power,

  253. to remember

  254. God's good salvation.

  255. And it's always good

  256. for us

  257. to look back,

  258. for us,

  259. from our vantage point

  260. in history,

  261. we look back

  262. to the cross

  263. and to see

  264. Jesus win

  265. that decisive victory

  266. over sin

  267. for his people.

  268. But when these storms

  269. are raging,

  270. whether it's natural disaster,

  271. whether it's the rage

  272. of people

  273. and opposition

  274. to God

  275. and his purposes,

  276. where is the safe place?

  277. Because there is

  278. a safe place

  279. in a dangerous world,

  280. we're told

  281. in this psalm.

  282. And the answer

  283. is pictured

  284. as verse 4,

  285. the city of God.

  286. And that's a safe place

  287. because that's the place

  288. God is with his people.

  289. It's the holy place

  290. where the Most High dwells.

  291. That's the safety

  292. that we need to find.

  293. That's the one safe place

  294. for us

  295. to be dwelling

  296. where God is,

  297. to be united

  298. to God

  299. by faith

  300. in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  301. That's where safety

  302. is found.

  303. And then the psalmist

  304. goes on

  305. to explain

  306. who is this God

  307. who is with his people

  308. and providing safety

  309. in verse 7.

  310. He is the Lord Almighty.

  311. He is the God

  312. of power,

  313. the God

  314. of strength.

  315. But he's also

  316. the God

  317. of Jacob.

  318. And we've been thinking

  319. about Jacob

  320. in the mornings.

  321. This is a reminder

  322. that this is the God

  323. of covenant grace.

  324. This is the God

  325. who in loving kindness

  326. commits himself

  327. to a people

  328. for their good

  329. and for his glory.

  330. So there is safety

  331. when we are found

  332. in this God

  333. who is both powerful

  334. and gracious

  335. when we make him,

  336. according to verse 7,

  337. our fortress,

  338. our high mountain

  339. castle fortress

  340. that nobody

  341. can penetrate.

  342. God,

  343. our only safe place

  344. in a dangerous world.

  345. John Calvin,

  346. the reformer,

  347. he said this.

  348. He said,

  349. if we desire

  350. to be protected

  351. by the hand of God,

  352. and who doesn't

  353. want that?

  354. It's not just Christians

  355. who pray

  356. and want protection

  357. from God.

  358. If we desire

  359. to be protected

  360. by the hand of God,

  361. we must be concerned

  362. above all things

  363. that he may dwell

  364. amongst us.

  365. For all hope

  366. of safety

  367. depends upon

  368. his presence

  369. alone.

  370. To be where God

  371. is.

  372. To have God

  373. with us

  374. is where

  375. we find

  376. strength.

  377. What is our hope

  378. in life

  379. and death?

  380. It's Christ alone.

  381. Jesus,

  382. our Emmanuel.

  383. There's this promise

  384. here of the Almighty

  385. Lord who is with

  386. his people

  387. and that promise

  388. is fulfilled

  389. perfectly in Jesus

  390. coming to be

  391. our Emmanuel,

  392. God with us.

  393. Now what did Jesus

  394. promise his church?

  395. He said,

  396. I will never leave you

  397. or forsake you.

  398. I am with you

  399. till the end

  400. of the age.

  401. So just as

  402. the sons of Korah,

  403. we are invited

  404. to draw comfort

  405. from God's

  406. past acts

  407. of salvation,

  408. to look at

  409. his strength

  410. and grace

  411. for and towards

  412. his people,

  413. especially we are

  414. to look to the cross

  415. as the source

  416. of our salvation

  417. and eternal life.

  418. So we look back

  419. but just like

  420. the psalmist too,

  421. we run to

  422. the Almighty Lord

  423. as our refuge,

  424. as our fortress.

  425. We run to Jesus,

  426. our safe place

  427. in a dangerous world.

  428. The second section

  429. is both similar

  430. and different

  431. where the sons

  432. of Korah

  433. are helping us

  434. to see that

  435. there's only

  436. one safe place

  437. from the judgment

  438. of God.

  439. In their psalm,

  440. they turn to

  441. a vision

  442. of the future

  443. from verse 8

  444. onwards.

  445. They're now looking

  446. towards the end

  447. of time.

  448. Verse 8

  449. and 9,

  450. come and see

  451. the works

  452. of the Lord,

  453. the desolations

  454. he has brought

  455. on the earth.

  456. He makes wars

  457. cease

  458. to the ends

  459. of the earth.

  460. He breaks the bow

  461. and shatters

  462. the spear.

  463. This is looking

  464. to the end

  465. of time

  466. and it promises,

  467. this section

  468. promises peace

  469. for the people

  470. of God

  471. but it's important

  472. for us to recognize

  473. that peace

  474. comes beyond

  475. and through

  476. judgment.

  477. there is that

  478. recognition

  479. within this psalm

  480. of the suffering

  481. that will be

  482. our present reality

  483. until we go

  484. to be with Jesus

  485. or until Jesus

  486. returns

  487. but on that day

  488. there will be

  489. peace

  490. that will break

  491. out

  492. and will

  493. never cease.

  494. The come and see

  495. language of verse 8

  496. presumes that

  497. the works of God

  498. presumes that

  499. the judgment

  500. of God

  501. are good news.

  502. So as the sons

  503. of Korah

  504. are singing

  505. they're inviting

  506. the people of God

  507. to have that

  508. perspective

  509. to see themselves

  510. as those who have

  511. been adopted

  512. into God's family

  513. and so they want

  514. to see God's

  515. purposes come

  516. because when you

  517. think about it

  518. when he starts

  519. to speak about

  520. judgment coming

  521. desolation

  522. being brought

  523. on the earth

  524. that judgment

  525. would be terror

  526. and not hope

  527. unless we knew

  528. that our future

  529. was secure

  530. because of our

  531. faith in God

  532. in Jesus.

  533. but for the church

  534. there is certainty

  535. being presented

  536. here to give

  537. us hope

  538. that there is

  539. a safe place

  540. for us

  541. beyond judgment.

  542. there is a promise

  543. that the raging

  544. of the nations

  545. against God

  546. and against God's

  547. purposes

  548. will end.

  549. There is a certainty

  550. that rebellion

  551. against God

  552. in the end

  553. will be

  554. crushed

  555. so that after

  556. judgment

  557. there will

  558. be peace.

  559. peace.

  560. That wonderful

  561. picture of

  562. Jesus

  563. and his church

  564. together

  565. in Revelation

  566. 21

  567. comes after

  568. the defeat

  569. the destruction

  570. the judgment

  571. of Satan

  572. and his

  573. forces.

  574. Peace comes

  575. beyond

  576. judgment.

  577. And then there is

  578. verse 10

  579. be still

  580. and know

  581. that I am God

  582. I will be

  583. exalted

  584. among the

  585. nations

  586. I will be

  587. exalted

  588. in the

  589. earth.

  590. Maybe you

  591. like me

  592. think about

  593. that verse

  594. in terms of

  595. quiet meditation

  596. here is an

  597. opportunity

  598. for us

  599. as Christians

  600. to be still

  601. to take some

  602. time to think

  603. about God

  604. and that's

  605. part of it

  606. but in the

  607. first place

  608. those words

  609. stand as a

  610. rebuke

  611. to a

  612. restless

  613. world

  614. to a world

  615. that is

  616. opposed

  617. to God.

  618. It is a

  619. way to

  620. say

  621. you need

  622. to stop

  623. fighting

  624. because this

  625. is a

  626. fight you

  627. cannot

  628. and you

  629. will

  630. not

  631. win.

  632. So it

  633. brings to

  634. us this

  635. reality

  636. that there

  637. is a

  638. God who

  639. is good

  640. and loving

  641. and gracious

  642. but there

  643. are also

  644. people who

  645. stand opposed

  646. to God

  647. and want

  648. nothing

  649. to do

  650. with him

  651. but

  652. verse 10

  653. is also

  654. at the

  655. same time

  656. the hope

  657. of the

  658. church

  659. that great

  660. hope that

  661. God will

  662. be exalted

  663. and recognized

  664. and honored

  665. among the

  666. nations.

  667. It's the

  668. great hope

  669. of the

  670. New Testament

  671. church

  672. the second

  673. coming of

  674. Jesus when

  675. he'll return

  676. with glory

  677. and we'll

  678. see him

  679. and there'll be

  680. joy on that

  681. day and there'll

  682. be deliverance

  683. on that

  684. day as our

  685. salvation is

  686. complete and

  687. we spend

  688. eternity with

  689. our God.

  690. Jesus the

  691. one safe

  692. place beyond

  693. judgment.

  694. And then the

  695. refrain returns

  696. in verse 11

  697. the Lord

  698. Almighty is

  699. with us

  700. the God of

  701. Jacob is

  702. our fortress

  703. and there is

  704. good news

  705. that it's

  706. this God

  707. who is

  708. with us

  709. this God

  710. who will

  711. act to

  712. judge and

  713. to deliver

  714. so that the

  715. people of

  716. God might

  717. know perfect

  718. peace with

  719. him.

  720. And this

  721. truth the

  722. Lord Almighty

  723. is with us

  724. again is seen

  725. in Jesus

  726. our Emmanuel

  727. Jesus who

  728. said quiet

  729. be still

  730. to a

  731. raging storm.

  732. Jesus who

  733. at the

  734. cross

  735. faced

  736. in himself

  737. the storm

  738. of God's

  739. judgment

  740. for our

  741. sin and

  742. guilt to

  743. secure

  744. our peace

  745. through his

  746. punishment.

  747. Jesus the

  748. one who

  749. fulfills

  750. verse 4

  751. the one who

  752. provides those

  753. streams of

  754. life giving

  755. water as

  756. he gives

  757. his spirit

  758. to the

  759. church.

  760. So as the

  761. people of

  762. God we are

  763. united to

  764. Christ and

  765. he lives

  766. in us

  767. by his

  768. spirit and

  769. united by

  770. faith to

  771. Jesus we

  772. need fear

  773. nothing.

  774. Our hope

  775. is certain

  776. our future

  777. is secure

  778. in him just

  779. as we died

  780. with him

  781. so we

  782. have been

  783. raised with

  784. him and we

  785. will go to

  786. glory to be

  787. with him at

  788. the end of

  789. our lives.

  790. Jesus the

  791. one who

  792. has been

  793. exalted

  794. among the

  795. nations

  796. the one who

  797. will return

  798. and every

  799. knee will

  800. bow and

  801. every tongue

  802. will confess

  803. Jesus is

  804. Lord.

  805. Psalm 46

  806. is encouraging

  807. you and me

  808. to make

  809. Jesus our

  810. safe place

  811. in whatever

  812. we face

  813. and we

  814. don't know

  815. what tomorrow

  816. will bring

  817. in terms of

  818. government

  819. regulations and

  820. what it will

  821. mean to

  822. our daily

  823. lives.

  824. We may

  825. find that

  826. we are unable

  827. to meet

  828. together as a

  829. church for a

  830. time but

  831. here is this

  832. wonderful promise

  833. that cannot

  834. be quarantined.

  835. Jesus our

  836. Lord is with

  837. us always

  838. and wherever

  839. we are.

  840. And we

  841. may find that

  842. our life gets

  843. challenging and

  844. even painful

  845. in coming

  846. months.

  847. But we

  848. recognize that

  849. we have in

  850. God a refuge

  851. and strength

  852. and ever

  853. present help

  854. in times of

  855. trouble.

  856. Jesus the

  857. one who

  858. continues to

  859. be with

  860. us and

  861. for us

  862. till the

  863. end.

  864. And so we

  865. have in

  866. this psalm a

  867. source of

  868. confident faith

  869. even in the

  870. midst of

  871. crisis.

  872. And may that

  873. be true for

  874. us, may it

  875. be true for

  876. our church, may

  877. it indeed be

  878. true for the

  879. people we love,

  880. our nation,

  881. our city,

  882. our world,

  883. that there

  884. might be a

  885. turning in

  886. the midst of

  887. chaos to

  888. this solid

  889. rock, this

  890. strong fortress.

  891. Let's pray

  892. together.

  893. Lord,
