  1. So I'm going to read a variety of passages from Acts chapter 1 and 2 to think about how the church begins.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  2. So we'll begin in Acts chapter 1, verses 4 to 8.

    Acts 1:4–8

  3. On one occasion, while Jesus was eating with the apostles, he gave them this command.

  4. Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you've heard me speak about.

  5. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.

  6. So when they met together, they asked him, Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?

  7. He said to them, it is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority,

  8. but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem,

  9. and in all Judea, and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

  10. And then if we flick over to chapter 2, we'll read verses 1 to 4 first of all.

  11. And then verse 16 and 17.

  12. As Peter draws the crowd's attention to the prophet Joel, and he says what happens can be explained by what was spoken by the prophet Joel.

  13. In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people.

  14. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.

  15. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.

  16. I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs of the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke.

  17. The sun will return to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.

  18. And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

  19. And then finally, for us now, we'll look from verse 32 to 39.

  20. And we read there,

  21. God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact.

  22. Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit,

  23. and has poured out what you now see and hear.

  24. For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said,

  25. The Lord said to my Lord, sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.

  26. Therefore, let all Israel be assured of this.

  27. God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.

  28. When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles,

  29. Brothers, what shall we do?

  30. Peter replied,

  31. Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of your sins,

  32. and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  33. The promise is for you and your children, and for all who are far off,

  34. for all whom the Lord our God will call.

  35. So we'll leave our reading there.

  36. We're thankful to God that we can hear the word that the Spirit inspired.

  37. We're going to think about those passages and one or two others as we begin this new series,

  38. where we think about the Holy Spirit in a believer's life,

  39. and particularly the Holy Spirit in the life of the church.

  40. So, why a series on the Holy Spirit?

  41. Two reasons.

  42. One is that you hear, you know, if you read Christian books,

  43. anything to do with the Trinity,

  44. the Spirit is often described as the forgotten member of the Trinity.

  45. There is that appreciation that we can easily lose a sense that the Spirit is personal,

  46. that he has a distinct work in a Christian life and in the church.

  47. And so I hope, as we spend a few weeks thinking about the Holy Spirit's work,

  48. it will be encouraging for us to see how the Spirit actively and personally works in and for us.

  49. And I think, too, we always need that constant reminder that the Spirit serves as the glue

  50. that binds a Christian to Jesus Christ.

  51. So we'll be remembering time and again that we need the work of the Holy Spirit to reveal Jesus to us,

  52. to apply the work of Jesus to us,

  53. and to keep showing us more of the glory of both the Father and the Son,

  54. to help us in our worship.

  55. But also, it seems important in the time that we find ourselves

  56. to recognise that just as we are bound to Jesus,

  57. he is the head of the church,

  58. so we are bound in Christ and by the Spirit to one another.

  59. And so I hope that this will be a way to strengthen our appreciation of our fellowship,

  60. that even though social distancing is separating us,

  61. still we are bound together by the Spirit of Christ in his church.

  62. And so we begin today thinking about the Holy Spirit and the life of the church for that reason.

  63. I have three things to say,

  64. and one book to recommend if you find that you've got lots of time on your hand.

  65. George Smeaton, a free church professor, I think he was,

  66. back in the 19th century, wrote a book on the Holy Spirit,

  67. which I have been slowly working through.

  68. It's an excellent book.

  69. I've got some quotes from him for everybody's benefit.

  70. First thing to say,

  71. the Spirit is at work in the founding of the church.

  72. The Spirit's there right in the beginning.

  73. That's Acts chapter 1.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  74. Here's Smeaton.

  75. The great work of the Spirit is called the church.

  76. So the Spirit is actively involved in establishing the church.

  77. So we've read there, Acts chapter 1, verses 4 and 5.

    Acts 1:4

  78. Jesus' words to the apostles,

  79. Wait in Jerusalem until you receive the gift my Father promised.

  80. What was that gift?

  81. Well, we know from the Old Testament and from Jesus' words,

  82. the gift he has in mind is the Holy Spirit.

  83. And that's why Peter, when he preaches,

  84. draws the crowd's attention to the promise of Joel in the Old Testament

  85. that's now being fulfilled.

  86. We can also think of the words connected to the New Covenant in Ezekiel 36,

    Ezekiel 36:26

  87. verse 26.

  88. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you.

  89. So there was this promise from the Father of the Holy Spirit

  90. that would come on the people of God.

  91. And so Jesus tells the apostles they are to wait in Jerusalem

  92. until they are baptised with the Holy Spirit,

  93. just as Jesus promised.

  94. And you remember John the Baptist said,

  95. I baptise with water,

  96. but one who is among you baptises with the Holy Spirit and with fire,

  97. speaking of Jesus.

  98. If we take a step back,

  99. think about Jesus' baptism,

  100. which was for him the beginning of his public ministry.

  101. What do we see?

  102. So we hear the voice of God,

  103. this is my son who I love.

  104. What do we see?

  105. We see God the Spirit come down on Jesus as a dove.

  106. Jesus does ministry in the power of the Spirit.

  107. And so now here,

  108. as the church is formed,

  109. and they're told to wait for ministry to begin,

  110. what are they waiting for?

  111. They're waiting for that same Holy Spirit to come on them.

  112. The same Spirit in Christ would be the same Spirit in the apostles.

  113. And that's the same Spirit in the same Spirit of Christ is in us,

  114. is in the members of Buclue,

  115. is in Christians,

  116. whoever we are,

  117. if our faith is in Jesus.

  118. Again,

  119. to take a step back,

  120. Jesus,

  121. the night before he died,

  122. in John's Gospel,

  123. king and head of the church,

  124. Jesus said,

  125. in John chapter 16,

    John 16:7

  126. verse 7,

  127. it is good for you

  128. that I am going away.

  129. Unless I go,

  130. so Jesus is thinking about his going,

  131. unless I go,

  132. the counsellor,

  133. the comforter,

  134. will not come to you.

  135. And then,

  136. in John chapter 14,

    John 14 chapter mention

  137. Jesus has already said,

  138. I will not leave you as orphans,

  139. I will come to you.

  140. So notice there,

  141. Jesus departing,

  142. and Jesus coming,

  143. are joined together.

  144. How are they joined together?

  145. They're joined together with a promise that Jesus would save the Spirit.

  146. It's the Spirit of Christ,

  147. who comes to dwell in the church.

  148. And it's the Spirit of Christ,

  149. that will enable and empower the church in ministry.

  150. So in Acts chapter 2,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  151. we read,

  152. the church comes into existence at Pentecost.

  153. The gift of the Spirit is given.

  154. The gift promised by the Father,

  155. promised by the Son,

  156. arrives.

  157. And then they get that ability to speak in other languages,

  158. and instantly,

  159. Peter is preaching,

  160. because the Spirit wants to share the glory of Jesus,

  161. the good news of the Gospel,

  162. with other people.

  163. And what we see,

  164. is that that same Spirit,

  165. that enables the apostles to preach,

  166. enables Peter to preach,

  167. it convicts and convinces the crowd

  168. of the message of the Gospel.

  169. They believe that Jesus really is the Son of God,

  170. He really was sent by God,

  171. demonstrated to be the Saviour by His miracles,

  172. and that He was handed over by God's foreknowledge,

  173. and they, in their sin,

  174. had killed Him,

  175. but God raised Him.

  176. And the Spirit,

  177. by His Word,

  178. by the preaching of the Word,

  179. builds 3,000 into the Church.

  180. Every single person who is baptised that day,

  181. 3,000,

  182. showing they identify with Jesus,

  183. every single one of them receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  184. The great work of the Spirit is called the Church.

  185. The Spirit reveals Jesus as the Son of God,

  186. reveals Him as the risen Lord and Saviour.

  187. It's the Spirit who causes us to be born again.

  188. So we can say that if we're part of God's Church,

  189. that that's only because the Spirit has opened our eyes

  190. to see our sin and our need,

  191. to see Jesus as good,

  192. to see Jesus as Saviour,

  193. and to look to Him in faith.

  194. The Spirit welds us in

  195. and unites us to Christ.

  196. And then we are united together as a Church by faith.

  197. So the Spirit is at work in the founding of the Church.

  198. I'd sort of connected,

  199. but building on that,

  200. let's say, secondly,

  201. that the Spirit is the bond

  202. uniting the Church to Christ.

  203. How can we say,

  204. as sometimes we do,

  205. I belong to the Church?

  206. That's not about the fact

  207. that we happen to go to a shared location,

  208. that we share proximity,

  209. and that we take part in religious practices.

  210. And that's good news for us,

  211. because those things have been taken from us temporarily,

  212. but that does not mean we stop being the Church.

  213. It doesn't mean we stop being the people of God.

  214. What the Bible says is that God is building His Church,

  215. Christ is building His Church,

  216. and He sends the Spirit as that cement

  217. that unites us to Christ.

  218. So as Jesus builds His Church,

  219. the Spirit is at work.

  220. And we're going to turn this time

  221. to 1 Corinthians chapter 3.

    1 Corinthians 3 chapter mention

  222. I just want to read a couple of verses there,

  223. in 1 Corinthians chapter 3,

    1 Corinthians 3 chapter mention

  224. where Paul is using the picture of the Church

  225. as a temple-building project.

  226. And there in 1 Corinthians 3,

  227. in verse 10,

  228. we read,

  229. And then he goes to talk about,

  230. with Jesus as the foundation,

  231. there's various materials that can be used.

  232. Some of those are good and will last.

  233. Some of those are not and will not last.

  234. But then verse 16,

  235. Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple

  236. and that God's Spirit lives in you?

  237. So here is Paul the Apostle.

  238. He's saying,

  239. I've laid in Corinth the foundation for the Church,

  240. which is Christ.

  241. Christ as cornerstone,

  242. Christ as foundation.

  243. The Gospel is what the Church is built on.

  244. And then he uses this image

  245. that the Church is like a temple-building project.

  246. And it's Jesus' project.

  247. And the only way to build the Church

  248. is on Jesus and His Word.

  249. But then the finished article there in verse 16

  250. is that we become a temple

  251. in which God's Spirit lives.

  252. That's a wonderful image of the Church.

  253. The Spirit of God lives in us.

  254. Again, we are seeing here

  255. that we become part of the Church

  256. only by having saving faith in Jesus.

  257. So the Spirit calls us to believe.

  258. The Spirit binds us to Jesus.

  259. Christ comes to us by His Spirit in us.

  260. And we become part of this temple-building project.

  261. So here's the amazing truth for you to consider.

  262. Maybe you're in your sitting room.

  263. Maybe you're in your kitchen.

  264. Maybe you're in your bedroom.

  265. But here is this wonderful image.

  266. Now just as in the Old Testament,

  267. where did God choose to dwell?

  268. On the earth, He chose to dwell in the temple.

  269. And what we see regularly at the temple

  270. is that the cloud of God's glory

  271. filled that temple.

  272. But now in the New Testament,

  273. God chooses to live in His people.

  274. God chooses us, the Church,

  275. as His temple.

  276. And so we are filled, as Christians,

  277. with the Spirit of glory.

  278. So the Holy Spirit joins us to Christ

  279. as the foundation.

  280. The Holy Spirit joins us to Jesus

  281. as the head of the Church.

  282. So from top to bottom, beginning to end,

  283. whether we're together or whether we're apart,

  284. we are one body, one temple,

  285. where Christ lives by His Spirit.

  286. And the last thing to say

  287. about the Spirit of the Church for today

  288. is that the Spirit is at work

  289. in the worship of the Church.

  290. I think it's important for us to recognise this

  291. as we live in strange days

  292. for a few weeks.

  293. You know, we can worship in our pyjamas,

  294. which isn't normal.

  295. On a Sunday, we are finding that this virus

  296. is restricting our shared worship.

  297. And we weren't able to have a Lord's Supper last week.

  298. We have no services.

  299. So it's important for us to see

  300. that we are still a worshipping people

  301. and the Spirit is at work

  302. as we worship.

  303. And again, one of the things I hope

  304. will come out of this time

  305. of isolation and distance

  306. is that it will make you and I

  307. long for shared worship,

  308. to long for community and fellowship

  309. as the people of God.

  310. It's one of those things that

  311. sometimes we don't always appreciate

  312. what we've got until

  313. what we've got is gone.

  314. So I hope

  315. whenever we get the chance to come back,

  316. we'll come back with a new appreciation

  317. of the privilege of being able to worship.

  318. Certainly for me this week,

  319. I've also been thinking about

  320. having a new appreciation

  321. for the struggles of the persecuted church.

  322. Thinking about stories of believers

  323. who are isolated permanently

  324. and they cannot worship with anybody else

  325. and they dare not share their faith

  326. because they don't know who to trust.

  327. They don't know whether if they talk

  328. to someone about Jesus,

  329. they'll get reported to the authorities,

  330. thrown in prison or killed.

  331. And so ours is temporary.

  332. And still, thanks to technology,

  333. we can still worship.

  334. And so we remember our persecuted

  335. brothers and sisters in Christ.

  336. But it's so important for us to remember,

  337. even in these strange days,

  338. the Spirit of Christ will work among us

  339. as we worship.

  340. Again, George Smeaton,

  341. he said,

  342. the presence of Christ

  343. by the Spirit

  344. in the church

  345. is the church's glory.

  346. And whether we meet in a building together

  347. or whether we meet remotely

  348. thanks to technology,

  349. nothing changes that.

  350. Christ is present

  351. by his Spirit.

  352. And so,

  353. while we may look small

  354. and insignificant to the world,

  355. in God's eyes,

  356. we're glorious.

  357. Because the Spirit

  358. dwells in us.

  359. I want to read another couple of verses,

  360. this time from 1 Peter,

    1 Peter 2 chapter mention

  361. chapter 2.

  362. 1 Peter, chapter 2.

    1 Peter 2 chapter mention

  363. And we find here,

  364. Peter is picking up on the temple image

  365. that Paul used,

  366. but also talking about the church

  367. as priests.

  368. So,

  369. in 1 Peter, chapter 2,

    1 Peter 2:5

  370. verse 5,

  371. or read verse 4.

  372. As you come to him,

  373. the living stone,

  374. rejected by men,

  375. but chosen by God

  376. and precious to him,

  377. you also,

  378. like living stones,

  379. are being built

  380. into a spiritual house

  381. to be a holy priesthood,

  382. offering spiritual sacrifices

  383. acceptable to God

  384. through Jesus Christ.

  385. So,

  386. he's saying the church

  387. is a holy priesthood.

  388. We are a set-apart people.

  389. Set-apart for what?

  390. Set-apart to serve God.

  391. And there,

  392. in verse 5 particularly,

  393. it says,

  394. we're set-apart to offer

  395. spiritual sacrifices.

  396. In other words,

  397. we're set-apart

  398. so that we might be

  399. a worshipping people.

  400. Everybody in the world

  401. worships something,

  402. but we are to worship

  403. the one true God.

  404. And so,

  405. we offer spiritual sacrifice

  406. in our shared worship

  407. and in our daily lives

  408. of loving obedience

  409. to him.

  410. And those things

  411. don't change.

  412. And whatever our circumstances

  413. and restrictions,

  414. we still can worship together

  415. corporately,

  416. and we can still

  417. live lives of worship

  418. and loving obedience

  419. to God.

  420. And then also,

  421. in verse 9,

  422. the same idea

  423. is picked up again,

  424. but taken in a slightly

  425. different direction.

  426. You are a chosen people,

  427. a royal priesthood,

  428. a holy nation,

  429. a people belonging to God.

  430. For why?

  431. That you may declare

  432. the praises of him

  433. who called you out of darkness

  434. into his wonderful light.

  435. So we are set-apart,

  436. called to worship,

  437. and we are called

  438. to witness,

  439. to declare

  440. the praises of him

  441. who called us

  442. from darkness

  443. to light.

  444. We are to share

  445. the good news

  446. of the salvation

  447. of Jesus

  448. with others.

  449. But the point

  450. for us today

  451. is that

  452. we worship

  453. and we witness

  454. with the help

  455. of the Spirit of Christ

  456. in us.

  457. Here's one last

  458. George Smeaton quote,

  459. and I find this

  460. so helpful

  461. for thinking about

  462. what is it

  463. that's happening

  464. when people gather

  465. together as the people

  466. of God

  467. to share worship.

  468. This is true

  469. whether we do it

  470. in one building

  471. or we do it remotely.

  472. Here's what

  473. Smeaton says.

  474. He says,

  475. the Lord Jesus

  476. acts from God

  477. to us

  478. and from us

  479. to God

  480. in both instances

  481. by the Holy Spirit.

  482. So the Holy Spirit

  483. is central

  484. to our worship,

  485. bringing us

  486. the grace

  487. of Jesus

  488. to us

  489. and enabling us

  490. to praise

  491. in response.

  492. So practically,

  493. what does that

  494. mean for us

  495. in these days?

  496. It means that

  497. whenever we read

  498. the Bible

  499. with one person,

  500. with a hundred,

  501. with a thousand people,

  502. we need

  503. the Spirit of Christ

  504. to speak

  505. to us

  506. and to

  507. enlighten

  508. our hearts

  509. and our minds

  510. so that we can

  511. grasp the truth

  512. so that we might

  513. live out

  514. that truth.

  515. When we pray

  516. or when we listen

  517. to God's Word

  518. being preached,

  519. the Spirit

  520. of Christ

  521. uses it

  522. to bring

  523. fresh grace

  524. from God

  525. to us.

  526. Uses

  527. that prayer

  528. and that preaching

  529. to bring salvation.

  530. So we see

  531. the Spirit

  532. as the channel,

  533. the channel

  534. through whom

  535. we receive

  536. grace

  537. from God

  538. and the channel

  539. through whom

  540. our praise

  541. and our worship

  542. returns

  543. to God.

  544. So as you sit

  545. at your kitchen

  546. table

  547. or as you sit

  548. at your couch

  549. and do family worship,

  550. as you sit around

  551. the computer

  552. now

  553. and think about

  554. worship

  555. and maybe it feels

  556. slightly different

  557. and artificial,

  558. remember

  559. the Spirit

  560. of God

  561. in you

  562. is bringing

  563. the grace

  564. of God

  565. to you

  566. and wants

  567. to help you

  568. to respond

  569. in real

  570. worship

  571. and praise.

  572. So we need

  573. the Holy Spirit

  574. and we're so thankful

  575. the Holy Spirit

  576. established the church,

  577. establishes us

  578. in the church,

  579. unites us to Christ

  580. and helps us

  581. in our worship.

  582. So we'll hear

  583. hopefully lots more

  584. about the work

  585. of the Holy Spirit

  586. in coming weeks

  587. but we'll leave it there

  588. for now.

  589. and
