  1. Father, we ask that you would continue to gently but deeply pour out your Holy Spirit upon us.

  2. Father, we confess before you that what we most need is not more rules to remember with our mind

  3. or more rules to embrace with our will or more rules that we would long that we could follow.

  4. But what we need most of all, Father, is for you to write your words of instruction and your words of love

  5. and your words of everlasting kindness upon our hearts.

  6. And we confess before you that it is only you who can do this by your Holy Spirit.

  7. So we ask, Father, that you would gently but deeply pour out your Holy Spirit into our hearts

  8. and write your very words in the center of who we are.

  9. And this we ask in Jesus' name, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  10. Please be seated.

  11. I know this isn't a very good beginning.

  12. Is my mic, I'm fine?

  13. It feels like my, okay, it's drooping.

  14. So if for some reason something's doing, just wave at, if it's going really wonky, just wave at me and we'll switch it.

  15. But I'm going to do something which might be a little bit foolish this morning.

  16. It won't be the first time and it won't be the last.

  17. And one of the things which I'm, what might be a little bit foolish is that John, when he was reading 2 Corinthians,

  18. he said something, or he read something, I should say, that might to some of you sound like it's a really, really, really lovely image.

  19. In fact, it's an image that you think, that's a really lovely image.

  20. It's just exactly what I needed to hear this morning.

  21. Maybe none of you heard that.

  22. But it's very easy if you were going to look at it and even read at it.

  23. He might say, that's a really, really lovely image.

  24. And here's where I might be being a little bit foolish.

  25. Probably every single one of you or most of you misheard it.

  26. And in fact, it's not a lovely image.

  27. It's an insulting image.

  28. And so why am I going to tell you that and try to have you look at it and see why it's insulting?

  29. One of the reasons I'm doing it is that when I was in first year university 100 million years ago,

  30. my first year philosophy professor, he knew the Bible better than I did.

  31. And he was also an atheist.

  32. And I think probably his personal mission statement was to make sure that people who followed any religion

  33. would follow no religion by the end of his philosophy classes.

  34. And he was always bringing up things in the Bible.

  35. And here I'd been going to church all my life.

  36. And I'd been a Christian for a few years.

  37. And I'd go, wow, I didn't know that was there.

  38. And I would be gobsmacked.

  39. And it's an Irish expression.

  40. And I wouldn't know what to say.

  41. So I want to have that happen to you folks.

  42. So there's an image that is in the text that John just read

  43. that many of us might think that sounds like a really, really wonderful image.

  44. Maybe I'm going to quote that.

  45. I'm going to write it on a mug.

  46. So every day when I drink coffee, I can be reminded of I'm going to put it on the mirror.

  47. The problem is you still might want to do it after I've explained to you.

  48. But it's actually an insulting image.

  49. And probably when Paul's first hearers were hearing the Bible, they went,

  50. it's not what they were hoping that he was going to say.

  51. So it would be a great help to me if you'd open your Bibles and turn to 2 Corinthians 2.

  52. 2 Corinthians 2.

  53. And it's going to be, I'm going to start reading at verse 14.

  54. 2 Corinthians 2, verse 14.

    2 Corinthians 2:14

  55. And just while you're turning to that, you know, there's a couple of,

  56. there's many cool things.

  57. I haven't talked much to you about the book of 2 Corinthians.

  58. It looks fancy, like it's, you know, it's in a Bible.

  59. And this used to have sort of like a gold stuff at the end.

  60. And it's nice thin paper.

  61. It looks very fancy.

  62. But this, you know, part of the thing which is so cool about this letter is,

  63. you know, we think of, you know, in part of the way that the culture understands

  64. how the Christianity expanded,

  65. that the image that goes to a lot of our minds in Canadian culture

  66. is the Crusades or the conquistadors coming to South America.

  67. And they come with armies and they sort of bind people.

  68. And that's when people think of Christianity jumping continents

  69. or coming to a new people group.

  70. That's what a lot of people in our culture tend to think of.

  71. It's violent and it's exploitative.

  72. And there's no question that some things like that happen.

  73. You can't deny it.

  74. But in fact, it's not actually the way that Christianity

  75. has generally grown across the world.

  76. One of the things which is so interesting about this letter

  77. is it was written about seven years after Christianity jumped continents.

  78. It jumped from the Middle East, or really what you'd almost call Africa.

  79. It jumped to Europe.

  80. And if you go back and read Acts 16,

  81. you get an historical account of the first Christians coming to Europe.

  82. And they don't come with a big army.

  83. It's four blokes stepping off a gangplank of a ship.

  84. And in Acts 16, when you read about Paul putting his foot down in Philippi,

  85. you are reading of the account of the first Christian setting foot in Europe.

  86. And then a little bit later on,

  87. when you hear him talking to Lydia,

  88. and then Lydia becomes a Christian,

  89. you are reading the story of the first European Christian.

  90. Lydia.

  91. Either a single woman, because she's widowed,

  92. or a woman with a husband who remains pagan.

  93. But it's probably in terms of the context,

  94. a single woman in Philippi becomes the first European Christian.

  95. And shortly after that,

  96. because there ends up being great persecution,

  97. the violence in Christianity jumping from Africa to Europe,

  98. the violence comes not from Christians, but from pagans.

  99. And so they violently attack the Christians.

  100. Paul's put in jail.

  101. Acts 16 tells you the story.

  102. And then he leaves,

  103. and he goes down the coast of what is now Greece.

  104. And he goes to Thessalonica,

  105. and then he goes to Berea,

  106. and then he comes to Corinth,

  107. probably just a couple of months after Christianity has jumped to Europe.

  108. And when Paul comes to Corinth,

  109. there are no Christians.

  110. It's a culture and a society completely organized around paganism.

  111. In fact, one of the things,

  112. Paul doesn't talk about this very much in this book,

  113. but it's something which is really interesting,

  114. important in 1 Corinthians.

  115. Just get your mind around this.

  116. For the average person in Corinth,

  117. just put your mind back in this.

  118. If I was in Corinth in the year 50,

  119. and I said to Louise,

  120. I had to go to the temple to worship,

  121. what it would mean in many cases

  122. was I was going to the temple to have sex with a priestess,

  123. because that's how you worshiped.

  124. Or you'd go to have an animal killed,

  125. or do some other type of act,

  126. or to do some type of magical incantational act.

  127. And in a culture which was completely and utterly unified around paganism,

  128. Paul comes with no power,

  129. and a small group of people,

  130. and he starts to proclaim Jesus,

  131. and people come to faith.

  132. And so this letter here of 2 Corinthians,

  133. this is written just a few years

  134. after Christianity has first come to Europe,

  135. and it's come to a center that Paul had been at for 18 months.

  136. He's come and gone a few times,

  137. and that's the context of this letter.

  138. So for many of the people who are hearing this letter,

  139. they probably were Roman soldiers.

  140. Many of them might have been Roman soldiers,

  141. or at least they're very familiar with how Rome does things,

  142. and how this mighty empire does things.

  143. And they're listening to it as Romans,

  144. from a pagan perspective.

  145. They've now become Christians.

  146. Maybe there's seekers in the congregation.

  147. When we listen to the text,

  148. we tend to think of Europe as Christian.

  149. We have all these false conceptions

  150. about how Christianity has entered into other places,

  151. and we also listen to it with a Hollywood perspective.

  152. So 2 Corinthians 2, 14-17,

  153. let's read it,

  154. and then I'll explain how we must hear it.

  155. But thanks be to God,

  156. who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession,

  157. and through us spreads the fragrance

  158. of the knowledge of him everywhere.

  159. For we are the aroma of Christ to God,

  160. among those who are being saved

  161. and among those who are perishing,

  162. to one, a fragrance from death to death,

  163. to the other, a fragrance from life to life.

  164. Who is sufficient for these things?

  165. For we are not like so many peddlers of God's word,

  166. but as men of sincerity,

  167. as commissioned by God,

  168. in the sight of God,

  169. we speak in Christ.

  170. Now we'll just sort of pause.

  171. Here's the problem with this image.

  172. I just watched a Hollywood movie last night on Netflix.

  173. What is one of the ways

  174. that Hollywood likes to end its movies?

  175. Think of a lot of the Star Wars movies.

  176. Think of,

  177. how does Hollywood like to end a lot of its movies?

  178. The hero comes back,

  179. and there's a big gathering,

  180. and everybody's applauding.

  181. Or if not like that,

  182. then shortly afterwards,

  183. there's some ceremony to just sort of reward

  184. the great hero.

  185. And Hollywood loves to end movies

  186. with the hero or the heroine returning,

  187. and people applauding and celebrating.

  188. And so for many of us,

  189. when we hear about this triumphal procession,

  190. we think of it in terms of Hollywood terms.

  191. But thanks be to God,

  192. who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession,

  193. because that's how we would like to be welcomed,

  194. wouldn't we?

  195. Show up to work,

  196. everybody stands and applauds.

  197. It might get embarrassing

  198. after it happened the 15th time,

  199. but the first couple of times would be good,

  200. and it would be nice

  201. if they surprised us that way occasionally,

  202. just with applause.

  203. You know,

  204. we come home from work,

  205. or we come back to see our wife and our kid,

  206. and they applaud, you know?

  207. Way to go.

  208. So glad you're home.

  209. I mean,

  210. if Hollywood does it all the time,

  211. it's speaking to something deep within us.

  212. Now,

  213. I was going to do a visual thing

  214. to try to communicate this,

  215. but the reason I didn't

  216. was I was worried

  217. I would fall off the stage

  218. and break my neck,

  219. and that would really ruin the image,

  220. and it would ruin the sermon,

  221. and it would ruin my life.

  222. But the way you have to understand this text

  223. is not from Hollywood.

  224. Paul is at the end of a Roman procession.

  225. He's been defeated,

  226. and he's the captive,

  227. and he's in shackles.

  228. So if I was not worried

  229. about falling off this stage,

  230. I would have had somebody

  231. put something on my hands like this,

  232. and I would have had somebody

  233. put something on my feet,

  234. and I would have tied one end

  235. of the thing between

  236. to the chain or the cord

  237. between my hands,

  238. and I would have walked like this

  239. with my Bible.

  240. You can see why I didn't want to do it.

  241. I might forget that I'm wearing it,

  242. and next thing I know I trip,

  243. and I'm down on the ground.

  244. That's the image.

  245. Paul is at the end of the procession,

  246. and he's been defeated.

  247. In a sense, the image is the Roman army is gone.

  248. It's conquered.

  249. It's captured people,

  250. and people are all cheering,

  251. and they're all having a variety of responses,

  252. usually mocking at the people

  253. at the end of the parade

  254. who've been captive.

  255. One of our deepest fears is failure,

  256. and one of our deepest fears of all,

  257. in fact, if Hollywood wants to try to really

  258. try to tug on our heartstrings,

  259. it will show lots of Americans.

  260. I mean, it's American movies.

  261. That's fine.

  262. Canadians would do the same thing

  263. if it was a Canadian thing,

  264. and they would show them defeated

  265. at the end of some alien procession

  266. walking along in chains,

  267. and it would be like a dagger to our heart,

  268. and that's the image that Paul has shared,

  269. and he says,

  270. thanks be to God.

  271. In fact,

  272. this, once you understand

  273. that that's the image that he's using,

  274. but thanks be to God,

  275. who in Christ always leads us

  276. in triumphal procession.

  277. You know, some of you have gone to university

  278. or are going to university.

  279. What is one of the claims

  280. that Nietzsche makes about Christianity

  281. is that it's a slave religion,

  282. that it teaches us to be servile?

  283. What does Ayn Rand say about Christianity?

  284. That it's a slave religion,

  285. that it teaches us to be servile,

  286. that it teaches us to be doormats.

  287. What is it that many people

  288. in the business community

  289. and just in the world in general,

  290. what is one of the things

  291. that they say about Christians

  292. is that it teaches to be servile,

  293. that teaches to be slave?

  294. What is the fear of many people in Quebec,

  295. many francophones,

  296. about becoming a Christian?

  297. And while they think back

  298. to how for many, many years

  299. the Roman Catholic Church,

  300. whether they're remembering it correctly or not,

  301. had taught the people

  302. to be completely and utterly servile.

  303. It's a deep fear of many people

  304. that that's what the Christian faith does.

  305. It's a deep fear

  306. and it's a deep human fear.

  307. And here it is that Paul seems to celebrate it

  308. because he says,

  309. thanks be to God,

  310. who in Christ always leads us

  311. in triumphal procession.

  312. Now, how is it

  313. that Paul would use such an image?

  314. See, one of the things

  315. that the Bible is going to tell us

  316. is that we are in far deeper trouble

  317. apart from Christ

  318. than we ever possibly imagined

  319. and that God had really originally made us

  320. for far greater glory

  321. than we could ever possibly imagine

  322. that can only come through being in Christ.

  323. So how is it

  324. that an image like this

  325. could be something that looks

  326. that we would actually want to embrace?

  327. Let's go back to another Hollywood image.

  328. We're zombies.

  329. We have the zombie virus.

  330. And maybe it's like,

  331. you know,

  332. one of the hard parts

  333. for people who have dementia

  334. or people who have Alzheimer's

  335. is in the early stages

  336. when they realize

  337. they have enough of self-possession

  338. of their mind

  339. to realize that their mind is going.

  340. But let's say

  341. in the beginning of a zombie virus,

  342. we start to realize

  343. that we're becoming zombies

  344. and we don't have the courage

  345. to cut our head off

  346. or impale our face on a pole

  347. because that would be really hard.

  348. But we know we're becoming zombies.

  349. And then somebody

  350. wrestles us down

  351. and defeats us

  352. and plunges within us

  353. a needle

  354. and squirts something

  355. that not only will it stop

  356. the zombie virus

  357. but reverse it

  358. and start to have us process

  359. not towards becoming

  360. more and more a zombie

  361. from death to death.

  362. But we'll reverse the process

  363. that now

  364. it is going from

  365. life to life.

  366. We were a zombie

  367. on the way

  368. to becoming a zombie

  369. and someone

  370. defeats us

  371. wrestles us

  372. to the ground

  373. because there's enough

  374. of a zombie-ish

  375. in them

  376. that when we see them

  377. we start to think

  378. of how tasty

  379. their brains are

  380. and their blood.

  381. I'm saying this in church

  382. that's fine.

  383. You guys all watch

  384. or know of zombie movies.

  385. But somebody

  386. defeats

  387. our attempt

  388. at aggression

  389. wrestles us down

  390. and because they love us

  391. their defeat

  392. is because they love us

  393. the injection

  394. is because they love us

  395. and as the zombie

  396. fighting vaccine

  397. enters our body

  398. we start to realize

  399. that the process

  400. is reversed

  401. and maybe

  402. we still have to

  403. have our hands

  404. shackled

  405. and maybe

  406. they want to

  407. keep us

  408. right with them

  409. all the time

  410. so we don't get

  411. reinfected.

  412. But as we walk along

  413. we start to be

  414. so thankful

  415. that we are

  416. no longer

  417. going from

  418. zombie-hood

  419. to zombie-hood

  420. from death

  421. to death

  422. but that our

  423. destiny

  424. is from life

  425. to life

  426. and only

  427. an image

  428. like that

  429. makes sense

  430. of what Paul

  431. is saying

  432. and that is

  433. exactly

  434. what Paul

  435. is saying.

  436. That is

  437. exactly

  438. what Paul

  439. is saying.

  440. He's going

  441. to unpack

  442. the gospel

  443. as the letter

  444. goes on.

  445. It's his second

  446. letter to Corinth.

  447. He's already

  448. told them

  449. many many things

  450. about the gospel.

  451. It's only that

  452. that makes sense

  453. to this particular

  454. text.

  455. And you see

  456. in other words

  457. if you code up

  458. the first thing

  459. that would be

  460. great.

  461. Christ defeated

  462. sin.

  463. Christ defeated

  464. death.

  465. Christ defeated

  466. hell.

  467. Christ defeated

  468. me

  469. to save

  470. and deliver

  471. me.

  472. Christ defeated

  473. sin.

  474. Christ defeated

  475. death.

  476. Christ defeated

  477. hell.

  478. Christ defeated

  479. me

  480. to save

  481. and deliver

  482. me.

  483. that's the gospel.

  484. That's the gospel.

  485. And Paul, the image,

  486. it's a bit of a complicated image,

  487. but let's go back to the text,

  488. but thanks be to God,

  489. who in Christ always leads us

  490. in triumphal procession

  491. and through us,

  492. spreads the fragrance

  493. of the knowledge of him everywhere,

  494. for we are the aroma of Christ to God.

  495. And pause.

  496. All of this language of fragrance and aroma,

  497. Greek people who are getting this letter,

  498. when they read the Tanakh,

  499. what we call the Old Testament,

  500. they would have read it in Greek.

  501. And if they,

  502. and maybe this is one of those things

  503. that Paul would have preached,

  504. and in all the way through the book of Leviticus,

  505. when it's describing the different sacrifices

  506. in the Old Testament

  507. that have us make,

  508. that whereby we have peace with God,

  509. and there's,

  510. and part of it is,

  511. as it's burned,

  512. as it's a sacrifice,

  513. and it's burned,

  514. and there's a,

  515. there's an ode,

  516. all of this is the language

  517. of a successful sacrifice

  518. that reconciles us to God.

  519. So it's a very,

  520. very interesting image,

  521. because Paul is,

  522. is playing with images

  523. that would have been something

  524. that was meant to be read slowly.

  525. Paul is picturing himself

  526. as being so glad

  527. that he's in change,

  528. and he's being led in triumph

  529. by Jesus.

  530. And as he's being led in triumph

  531. by Jesus,

  532. he's using this imagery

  533. that he's,

  534. that what matters about Jesus

  535. isn't that Jesus can have big biceps,

  536. or that he's really good,

  537. like in zombie imagery,

  538. he's really good at banging zombies

  539. on the head,

  540. and killing them,

  541. or anything like that.

  542. It's the image that,

  543. that what brings about,

  544. that his triumph,

  545. is his successful act

  546. as a sacrifice.

  547. A sacrifice that comes from God,

  548. that reconciles us to God.

  549. And,

  550. and then the image is that

  551. it's as if this odor,

  552. it's,

  553. it's this aroma

  554. of the successful sacrifice

  555. that's,

  556. it's going up to God,

  557. and he can smell,

  558. he knows that his son

  559. has triumphed

  560. by the death of himself,

  561. the complete opposite

  562. of what we think is triumph,

  563. that,

  564. that my,

  565. that Jesus' defeat of death

  566. comes from his death,

  567. that Jesus' defeat of sin

  568. comes as his death

  569. bearing my sin,

  570. that his defeat of hell

  571. is that it's because

  572. he has died

  573. bearing my sin,

  574. defeating death,

  575. that hell is conquered,

  576. that hell is conquered,

  577. that when Jesus

  578. entered into what is death,

  579. he tasted everything

  580. there is to taste of death,

  581. with nothing left over,

  582. including whatever it is

  583. that we might imagine

  584. that hell is,

  585. and there's nothing

  586. that Jesus did not experience

  587. in terms of sin

  588. or in death

  589. that he has not triumphed over.

  590. When I put my faith

  591. and trust in him,

  592. it is my defeat

  593. of my desire

  594. to be like God.

  595. It is my defeat

  596. of my desire

  597. to be completely

  598. and utterly

  599. sufficient

  600. in and of myself.

  601. It is my defeat

  602. from all of those desires

  603. that take me from God,

  604. and not only

  605. is it my defeat

  606. of these desires,

  607. it is my sharing

  608. in his victory.

  609. And the image here

  610. is of this successful sacrifice.

  611. There's an aroma

  612. of this successful sacrifice

  613. and the same aroma

  614. and fragrance

  615. is what comes into me,

  616. into my lungs

  617. and comes out of my mouth

  618. as bearing witness

  619. to Jesus

  620. as the one

  621. who has defeated sin,

  622. who has defeated death,

  623. who has defeated hell,

  624. and who has defeated me,

  625. and he can do it for you.

  626. No one is too bad.

  627. No one is too broken.

  628. No one is too unimportant.

  629. No one is too important

  630. or too good.

  631. And then it has this

  632. ongoing image.

  633. Go back to verse 15.

  634. For we are the aroma

  635. of Christ to God

  636. among those who are being saved

  637. and among those

  638. who are perishing.

  639. To one a fragrance

  640. from death to death,

  641. to the other a fragrance

  642. from life to life.

  643. Who is sufficient

  644. for these things?

  645. For we are not like

  646. so many peddlers

  647. of God's word,

  648. but as men of sincerity

  649. and as commissioned by God,

  650. in the sight of God,

  651. we speak in Christ.

  652. See,

  653. one of the reasons

  654. I let you know

  655. that you probably

  656. were mishearing the image

  657. is because I don't want

  658. to be a peddler

  659. of God's word.

  660. Peddlers of God's word

  661. would make you think

  662. that your Hollywood image

  663. was correct.

  664. And I don't want to be

  665. a peddler of God's word.

  666. One of the things

  667. you should pray

  668. for your Bible study leaders,

  669. for your Sunday school teachers,

  670. for the professors at Ryle,

  671. for me,

  672. for Daniel,

  673. for anyone who has

  674. any type of,

  675. for the youth group ministry,

  676. for young adult ministry,

  677. for any type of ministry,

  678. is that we not be

  679. peddlers of God's word,

  680. but we try to honestly

  681. bring out God's word

  682. as the gospel

  683. that it really is.

  684. Please pray that

  685. for us.

  686. But just think it

  687. for a second.

  688. What this is saying,

  689. well, okay,

  690. let's a bit of a test.

  691. How many people,

  692. I don't want to

  693. shout out the answer.

  694. One of those things

  695. you can talk about

  696. at coffee afterwards.

  697. What percentage of Ottawa

  698. do you think

  699. went to church this morning?

  700. Like, you know,

  701. let's say all of a sudden

  702. we ask the National Security Agency

  703. or Russia

  704. or China

  705. or any of the other people

  706. who are monitoring

  707. the tracking devices

  708. that we all carry with us

  709. and keep charged,

  710. knowing as our phones

  711. and our iPads

  712. and all those other

  713. electronic things.

  714. You know,

  715. we carry them around.

  716. We very conveniently,

  717. just to help the NSA

  718. and Apple and Google

  719. to be able to market things to us

  720. and know where we are,

  721. we keep our tracking devices

  722. nicely charged.

  723. So,

  724. tomorrow morning,

  725. you know,

  726. somebody hacks

  727. and they,

  728. it was revealed

  729. where everybody actually was

  730. on Sunday morning

  731. and it,

  732. you know,

  733. I don't know what,

  734. I don't know,

  735. 4%,

  736. I don't know,

  737. what do you think,

  738. 5% of Ottawa,

  739. the next 100 people

  740. you meet tomorrow at work

  741. who are over the,

  742. you know,

  743. do you think 4 of them

  744. went to church somewhere?

  745. Not all good churches necessarily.

  746. I don't know what the percentage,

  747. it would be a very small percentage.

  748. I don't think any of us

  749. disagree about

  750. that would be small,

  751. definitely the minority,

  752. a huge minority.

  753. So,

  754. do you think

  755. from the perspective of Ottawa

  756. and Apple and Google

  757. and the government

  758. and NSA,

  759. et cetera,

  760. et cetera,

  761. do you think,

  762. what do you think

  763. they would think

  764. about the claim

  765. that what I just said

  766. to you a few moments ago

  767. about Christ defeated death

  768. and Christ defeated sin,

  769. Christ defeated death,

  770. Christ defeated hell,

  771. Christ defeated me

  772. to save me

  773. and deliver me.

  774. If I was to tell them

  775. that all of the things

  776. that are going on

  777. in the city of Ottawa,

  778. that what I just said

  779. was more important

  780. because only what I said

  781. has eternal consequences.

  782. And all of the other things

  783. that are being said

  784. on YouTube

  785. and Twitter

  786. is just chaff.

  787. They'd think I was insane.

  788. And I'll be honest,

  789. it really sounds

  790. pretty insane,

  791. doesn't it?

  792. But that's what

  793. the Bible's saying.

  794. The Bible is saying,

  795. verse 15,

  796. for we are the aroma

  797. of Christ to God

  798. among those

  799. who are being saved

  800. and among those

  801. who are perishing

  802. to one a fragrance

  803. from death to death

  804. to the other

  805. a fragrance

  806. from life to life.

  807. Who is sufficient

  808. for these things?

  809. For we are not like

  810. so many peddlers

  811. of God's word,

  812. but as men

  813. of sincerity

  814. is commissioned

  815. by God

  816. in the sight of God

  817. we speak in Christ.

  818. But notice here

  819. that Paul himself

  820. realizes that it sounds crazy

  821. because, you know,

  822. however low

  823. the church attendance

  824. is here today,

  825. however low it is

  826. that people might,

  827. and even many Christians

  828. would sort of balk

  829. at thinking

  830. that whatever comes

  831. out of a Christian's lips,

  832. that if what comes

  833. out of their lips

  834. is some type

  835. of bearing witness

  836. to Jesus,

  837. that that has

  838. eternal consequences,

  839. it sounds a little bit crazy.

  840. It would have even

  841. sounded crazier

  842. in Corinth.

  843. I don't know

  844. how big the church is.

  845. I don't know.

  846. The city was like

  847. 100,000 people.

  848. I don't know.

  849. Maybe there were

  850. 1,000 Christians.

  851. Maybe there were

  852. 400, 300.

  853. We don't know.

  854. It was a very small

  855. number of people.

  856. It would have

  857. sounded even crazier.

  858. Paul is aware

  859. of the fact

  860. that it sounds crazy.

  861. It sounds crazy

  862. not only because

  863. he's just described

  864. to these Romans

  865. who are used

  866. to seeing victory parades,

  867. that the way

  868. to understand him

  869. is that he's

  870. the captive

  871. in shackles

  872. and chains

  873. at the end

  874. of the parade

  875. because he's defeated.

  876. And that's probably

  877. not how they woke up

  878. that morning

  879. wishing that Paul

  880. would say something

  881. to them

  882. that would encourage them.

  883. So he's given them

  884. this counterintuitive image

  885. and then he's saying

  886. that what he says

  887. when he proclaims

  888. the gospel

  889. and what ordinary people

  890. when they proclaim

  891. the gospel,

  892. that that actually

  893. has eternal consequences

  894. in people's lives.

  895. It sounds crazy.

  896. And probably people

  897. are saying

  898. who do you think

  899. you are?

  900. Like why is it

  901. do you think

  902. that what you say

  903. is so important?

  904. And Paul understands

  905. that.

  906. That's why he says

  907. in verse 16

  908. who is sufficient

  909. for these things?

  910. He knows it sounds crazy.

  911. Who is sufficient

  912. for these things?

  913. And then he begins

  914. to answer it.

  915. Let's look and see

  916. what he says.

  917. Chapter 3 verse 1.

  918. What's Paul's answer?

  919. Are we beginning

  920. to commend ourselves again?

  921. So he's going to say

  922. no, no.

  923. This isn't just about

  924. me commending myself.

  925. Or do we need

  926. as some do

  927. letters of recommendation

  928. to you or from you

  929. as if you can somehow

  930. go to a degree program

  931. that once you finish

  932. the course

  933. and get the tattoo

  934. or the ring

  935. on your dominant hand

  936. that somehow

  937. you're not qualified

  938. and competent to do this

  939. because you have

  940. somebody else

  941. who said you are.

  942. You yourselves

  943. are a letter

  944. of recommendation

  945. written on our hearts

  946. to be known

  947. and read by all.

  948. And you show us

  949. and you show

  950. that you are a letter

  951. from Christ

  952. delivered by us

  953. written not with ink

  954. but with the spirit

  955. of the living God.

  956. Not on tablets

  957. of stone

  958. but on tablets

  959. of human hearts.

  960. And I'm going to talk

  961. about this more

  962. next week

  963. because Paul's going

  964. to sort of jump

  965. to another image

  966. and then after that

  967. which is the text

  968. for next week

  969. he's going to

  970. unpack that image

  971. a little bit more.

  972. but what he's saying

  973. here

  974. he's not commending

  975. himself

  976. and in fact

  977. he's even making

  978. the issue harder

  979. because he's saying

  980. what I'm saying

  981. is that there is

  982. a way

  983. what has to happen

  984. is something

  985. has to be written

  986. on our hearts.

  987. Something

  988. has to be written

  989. on our hearts

  990. and that's something

  991. that has to be

  992. written in our hearts

  993. has to turn

  994. our hearts

  995. from going

  996. from death

  997. to death

  998. because every person

  999. you meet today

  1000. will die

  1001. with no exception.

  1002. I mean

  1003. unless Jesus

  1004. comes back

  1005. and you know

  1006. the rapture

  1007. and all that stuff

  1008. but you know

1009. in and of who we are

  1010. by ourselves

  1011. every one of us

  1012. will die

  1013. from death

  1014. to death.

  1015. Aren't you glad

1016. you came to church today?

  1017. I could give you

  1018. all these uplifting thoughts

  1019. and

  1020. and Paul

  1021. is going to say

  1022. you know what

  1023. let's make this

  1024. even harder

  1025. it's not just a matter

  1026. of writing

  1027. you know

1028. being able to write out

  1029. some rules to follow

  1030. you know

  1031. listen if you just

  1032. if you do this

  1033. exercise program

1034. you're going to live longer

  1035. if you eat this

  1036. oh come on

  1037. get some fiber

  1038. and veggies

  1039. in your diet

  1040. and cut out

  1041. all that sugar

  1042. you'll live longer

  1043. you know

  1044. you'll live slimmer

  1045. and all that

  1046. we don't mean

  1047. something has to be

  1048. written on our hearts

  1049. and Paul's going to

  1050. return to this

1051. but I just want to see

  1052. he's in a sense

  1053. doubling down

1054. could you put the next

  1055. part up

1056. I'd like you to read

  1057. verses 4 to 6

  1058. with me

  1059. such is the confidence

  1060. that we have

  1061. through Christ

  1062. toward God

  1063. not that we are

  1064. sufficient

  1065. in ourselves

  1066. to claim

  1067. anything

  1068. as coming

  1069. from us

  1070. but our

  1071. sufficiency

  1072. is from God

  1073. who has made

  1074. us sufficient

  1075. to be ministers

  1076. of a new covenant

  1077. not of the letter

  1078. but of the spirit

  1079. for the letter

  1080. kills

  1081. but the spirit

  1082. gives life

1083. could you just put up

  1084. the next point

1085. and we're going to go back

  1086. to the scripture sentence

  1087. in a moment

  1088. just notice that

  1089. the fundamental direction

  1090. of the text

1091. at the end of the day

  1092. I hope you don't

  1093. I mean

1094. this is a helpful thing

  1095. to remember

  1096. I've just taken

  1097. two little bits

  1098. out of the text

1099. to help you to understand

  1100. the basic flow

  1101. of the argument

  1102. but it's the text

  1103. I hope you remember

  1104. as a follower

  1105. of Jesus

  1106. I mean

  1107. I'm also dying

  1108. right

  1109. I'm also dying

  1110. and

  1111. in fact

  1112. it's one of the

  1113. most powerful things

  1114. in 2 Corinthians

  1115. in a little bit

1116. in a couple of weeks

  1117. he's going to talk

  1118. about our

  1119. you know

  1120. our body

  1121. getting older

  1122. and getting weaker

  1123. and an eternal

  1124. weight of glory

  1125. that's inside

  1126. you know

  1127. that we're like

  1128. jars of clay

  1129. that are cracked

  1130. and easily broken

  1131. and will break

  1132. and that somehow

  1133. within us

  1134. through the gospel

  1135. we are being prepared

  1136. for an eternal

  1137. weight of glory

  1138. beyond imagination

  1139. but for now

  1140. I'm dying

  1141. and you all know

  1142. that I'm not necessarily

  1143. the best at doing

1144. a whole pile of things

  1145. part of getting older

  1146. if you mature

  1147. a lot of people

  1148. don't get any smarter

  1149. as they get older

  1150. they just get older

  1151. a lot of people

  1152. don't get any wiser

  1153. as they get older

  1154. they just get older

  1155. you know

  1156. those of you

  1157. who are closer

  1158. to my age

  1159. stop just listening

1160. to music from the 70s

  1161. like there's new music

  1162. out there

  1163. okay

  1164. like

  1165. like try something new

  1166. you know

  1167. anyway

  1168. but

  1169. you know

  1170. I'm not

  1171. I'm not confident

  1172. in a whole pile

  1173. of things

  1174. and

  1175. what this text

  1176. is saying

  1177. is that

  1178. I'm not

  1179. the things

  1180. I'd have my confidence

  1181. in

  1182. and the things

  1183. that I think

  1184. might make me

  1185. sufficient

  1186. are enough

  1187. for things

1188. that most of the time

  1189. I'm going to idols

  1190. and what it means

1191. to grow as a Christian

  1192. is to be able

  1193. to understand

  1194. this phrase

  1195. which I think

  1196. is up there

  1197. my confidence

  1198. through Christ

  1199. my sufficiency

  1200. from God

  1201. my confidence

  1202. through Christ

  1203. and my sufficiency

  1204. from God

  1205. my confidence

  1206. is not

  1207. that

  1208. I don't know

  1209. I can be

  1210. you know

  1211. I'm above average

  1212. intelligence

  1213. I'm pretty good

  1214. you know

  1215. relatively speaking

  1216. at organizing

  1217. my thoughts

  1218. you know

  1219. maybe I have

  1220. some natural

  1221. speaking abilities

  1222. you know

  1223. maybe I'm

  1224. on the right side

  1225. of church history

  1226. in terms of growth

  1227. and decline

  1228. or maybe

  1229. I don't know

  1230. I'm just me

  1231. and those can be

  1232. my confidences

  1233. they shouldn't be

  1234. my confidences

  1235. and what's going

  1236. to make me sufficient

  1237. is that I get

  1238. to wear a collar

  1239. it looks like

  1240. a Javex bottle

  1241. it's been stuck

  1242. on a black shirt

  1243. you know

  1244. that's not my

  1245. sufficiency

1246. it's not any of those

  1247. types of things

  1248. it is my confidence

  1249. to grow in

  1250. in life

  1251. is to understand

  1252. that my confidence

  1253. comes to me

  1254. through Christ

  1255. and my sufficiency

  1256. comes from God

  1257. could you go back

  1258. to the scripture text

  1259. please

  1260. say the text

  1261. with me again

  1262. you'll see that

1263. I'm not making this up

1264. it's not me being clever

  1265. it's in the text

1266. read it out with me

  1267. please

  1268. such is the confidence

  1269. that we have

  1270. through Christ

  1271. toward God

  1272. not that we are

  1273. sufficient

  1274. in ourselves

  1275. to claim

  1276. anything

  1277. as coming

  1278. from us

  1279. but our

  1280. sufficiency

  1281. is from God

  1282. who has made us

  1283. sufficient

  1284. to be ministers

  1285. of a new covenant

  1286. not of the letter

  1287. but of the spirit

  1288. for the letter

  1289. kills

  1290. but the spirit

  1291. gives life

  1292. it's a very

  1293. very very

  1294. very powerful

  1295. idea

1296. I mean one of the things

  1297. that just

1298. not only is my confidence

1299. to come more and more

  1300. through Christ

  1301. but my sufficiency

  1302. you see

  1303. one of the things

1304. that's so nice about this

  1305. I don't know if Daniel

  1306. DeGrossier is still here

  1307. he's still here

  1308. he gave a talk

  1309. on sharing the gospel

  1310. Daniel

  1311. you're completely

  1312. incompetent

  1313. to do that

  1314. Daniel

  1315. you're going to speak

  1316. at church on Wednesday

  1317. you're completely

  1318. and utterly

  1319. incompetent

  1320. you are not enough

  1321. we should bring

  1322. the Sunday school

  1323. teachers in here

  1324. right now

  1325. you are incompetent

  1326. I am incompetent

  1327. do you know

  1328. how freeing

  1329. it can start

  1330. to be

  1331. to realize

  1332. that you aren't

  1333. sufficient

  1334. if I share

  1335. my faith

  1336. and I almost

  1337. mentioned a couple

  1338. people's names

  1339. let me tell you

  1340. there's all sorts

  1341. of times I think

  1342. ah

  1343. what a stupid

  1344. thing to say

  1345. or

  1346. ah

  1347. why didn't I say

  1348. that

  1349. I have a bit of

  1350. dent

  1351. in my forehead

  1352. from doing things

  1353. like that

  1354. you know

  1355. I'll never be

  1356. sufficient

  1357. in and of

  1358. myself

  1359. but God

  1360. takes

  1361. our

  1362. stumbling

  1363. attempts

  1364. to bear

  1365. witness

  1366. to Jesus

  1367. and the

  1368. sufficiency

  1369. comes from

  1370. him

  1371. only God

  1372. can write

  1373. on your

  1374. heart

  1375. in a way

  1376. that turns

  1377. your heart

  1378. from a zombie

  1379. heart

  1380. to a living

  1381. heart

  1382. from a bound

  1383. heart

  1384. to a free

  1385. heart

  1386. heart

  1387. that's going

  1388. from death

  1389. to death

  1390. to a heart

  1391. that's going

  1392. from life

  1393. to life

  1394. only God

  1395. can do that

  1396. you are

  1397. never

  1398. ever

  1399. ever

  1400. ever

  1401. in and of

  1402. yourself

  1403. able to

  1404. do that

  1405. that's what

  1406. the Bible

  1407. is telling

  1408. us

  1409. and when it

  1410. says the letter

  1411. kills

  1412. we're going to

  1413. talk about

  1414. that more

  1415. later on

  1416. it's really

  1417. just saying

  1418. what we

  1419. don't need

  1420. is more

  1421. things that

  1422. we need

  1423. to do

  1424. more ways

  1425. to lose

  1426. weight

  1427. more way

  1428. to put

  1429. on muscle

  1430. more ways

  1431. to make

  1432. more money

  1433. more ways

  1434. to save

  1435. money

  1436. more ways

  1437. to be

  1438. better

  1439. consumers

  1440. more ways

  1441. to have

  1442. everybody

  1443. like

  1444. we don't

  1445. need a whole

  1446. pile of

  1447. things written

  1448. down like

  1449. that

  1450. we don't

  1451. need more

  1452. tattoos

  1453. what we

  1454. need is

  1455. only God

  1456. can write

  1457. in our

  1458. hearts

  1459. can we

  1460. say this

  1461. text again

  1462. together

  1463. out loud

  1464. please

  1465. such as

  1466. the confidence

  1467. that we

  1468. have through

  1469. Christ

  1470. toward God

  1471. not that

  1472. we are

  1473. sufficient

  1474. in ourselves

  1475. to claim

  1476. anything

  1477. as coming

  1478. from us

  1479. but our

  1480. sufficiency

  1481. is from

  1482. God

  1483. who has

  1484. made us

  1485. sufficient

  1486. to be

  1487. ministers

  1488. of a

  1489. new

  1490. covenant

  1491. not of

  1492. the letter

  1493. but of

  1494. the spirit

  1495. for the

  1496. letter

  1497. kills

  1498. but the

  1499. spirit

  1500. gives

  1501. life

  1502. just in

  1503. closing

  1504. is this

  1505. only

  1506. spiritual

  1507. no

  1508. it's

  1509. not just

  1510. about

  1511. being able

  1512. to tell

  1513. people

  1514. about

  1515. Jesus

  1516. one of

  1517. the

  1518. problems

  1519. with

  1520. pornography

  1521. and

  1522. I

  1523. got

  1524. really

  1525. helpful

  1526. correction

  1527. from a

  1528. couple

  1529. of

  1530. weeks

  1531. ago

  1532. when I

  1533. happened

  1534. to

  1535. mention

  1536. pornography

  1537. this is

  1538. relevant

  1539. by the

  1540. way

  1541. I

  1542. don't

  1543. have

  1544. a

  1545. hobby

  1546. horse

  1547. around

  1548. it

  1549. but

  1550. it's

  1551. very

  1552. very

  1553. relevant

  1554. is

  1555. that

  1556. I

  1557. only

  1558. talked

  1559. as if

  1560. only

  1561. men

  1562. have

  1563. problems

  1564. with

  1565. pornography

  1566. and

  1567. I

  1568. apologize

  1569. to

  1570. those

  1571. women

  1572. present

  1573. who have

  1574. problems

  1575. with

  1576. pornography

  1577. and

  1578. one

  1579. of

  1580. the

  1581. problems

  1582. with

  1583. pornography

  1584. is

  1585. that

  1586. it

  1587. makes

  1588. us

  1589. feel

  1590. not

  1591. enough

  1592. one

  1593. of

  1594. the

  1595. problems

  1596. for

  1597. a

  1598. wife

  1599. or

  1600. a

  1601. husband

  1602. to

  1603. find

  1604. that

  1605. their

  1606. spouse

  1607. is

  1608. looking

  1609. at

  1610. pornography

  1611. is

  1612. that

  1613. it's

  1614. a

  1615. big

  1616. dagger

  1617. in

  1618. their

  1619. heart

  1620. they

  1621. worry

  1622. and

  1623. wonder

  1624. why

  1625. they're

  1626. not

  1627. enough

  1628. why

  1629. aren't

  1630. they

  1631. sufficient

  1632. for

  1633. their

  1634. spouse

  1635. and

  1636. one

  1637. of

  1638. the

  1639. worries

  1640. that we

  1641. have

  1642. as we

  1643. get

  1644. immersed

  1645. in

  1646. pornography

  1647. or even

  1648. as we

  1649. become

  1650. aware

  1651. of the

  1652. fact

  1653. that

  1654. even

  1655. if we

  1656. ourselves

  1657. maybe

  1658. have

  1659. gotten

  1660. out

  1661. of

  1662. pornography

  1663. and

  1664. it

  1665. isn't

  1666. doing

  1667. something

  1668. to us

  1669. that

  1670. maybe

  1671. the

  1672. people

  1673. that

  1674. we're

  1675. dating

  1676. and

  1677. that

  1678. we

  1679. want

  1680. to

  1681. marry

  1682. and

  1683. we

  1684. worry

  1685. that

  1686. if

  1687. we

  1688. get

  1689. into

  1690. that

  1691. marital

  1692. relationship

  1693. that

  1694. after

  1695. they've

  1696. been

  1697. filling

  1698. their

  1699. minds

  1700. and their

  1701. hearts

  1702. with

  1703. pornography

  1704. that

  1705. we

  1706. won't

  1707. be

  1708. enough

  1709. and

  1710. it's

  1711. not

  1712. just

  1713. in

  1714. areas

  1715. of

  1716. pornography

  1717. I'm

  1718. using

  1719. pornography

  1720. as an

  1721. example

  1722. because

  1723. it's

  1724. a

  1725. human

  1726. problem

  1727. that

  1728. we

  1729. worry

  1730. about

  1731. being

  1732. enough

  1733. and

  1734. this

  1735. text

  1736. is

  1737. talking

  1738. about

  1739. something

  1740. eternal

  1741. but

  1742. it's

  1743. a

  1744. very

  1745. powerful

  1746. lesson

  1747. it's

  1748. not

  1749. limiting

  1750. our

  1751. confidence

  1752. in

  1753. Christ

  1754. through

  1755. Christ

  1756. and

  1757. our

  1758. sufficiency

  1759. from

  1760. God

  1761. it's

  1762. not

  1763. just

  1764. limiting

  1765. it

  1766. these

  1767. are

  1768. huge

  1769. statements

  1770. it's

  1771. not

  1772. just

  1773. limiting

  1774. it

  1775. to

  1776. Christian

  1777. ministry

  1778. types

  1779. of

  1780. things

  1781. and

  1782. then

  1783. the

  1784. rest

  1785. of

  1786. it

  1787. sucks

  1788. to

  1789. be

  1790. you

  1791. for

  1792. the

  1793. rest

  1794. of

  1795. your

  1796. life

  1797. it's

  1798. not

  1799. that

  1800. way

  1801. it's

  1802. a

  1803. big

  1804. statement

  1805. and

  1806. here's

  1807. the

  1808. problem

  1809. Genesis

  1810. 3

  1811. human

  1812. beings

  1813. want

  1814. to

  1815. be

  1816. like

  1817. God

  1818. and

  1819. as

  1820. a

  1821. result

  1822. of

  1823. that

  1824. desire

  1825. to

  1826. be

  1827. like

  1828. God

  1829. they

  1830. become

  1831. separate

  1832. from

  1833. God

  1834. it's

  1835. why

  1836. we

  1837. need

  1838. a

  1839. savior

  1840. and

  1841. ever

  1842. since

  1843. then

  1844. we

  1845. have

  1846. a

  1847. hard

  1848. time

  1849. understanding

  1850. where

  1851. we

  1852. are

  1853. on

  1854. the

  1855. enough

  1856. and

  1857. sufficiency

  1858. scale

  1859. because

  1860. here's

  1861. the

  1862. thing

  1863. many

  1864. of

  1865. us

  1866. and

  1867. this

  1868. is

  1869. one

  1870. of

  1871. the

  1872. things

  1873. that

  1874. happens

  1875. with

  1876. pornography

  1877. and

  1878. it's

  1879. not only

  1880. that

  1881. but also

  1882. other

  1883. types

  1884. of

  1885. failure

  1886. is that

  1887. we

  1888. demand

  1889. we

  1890. start

  1891. to

  1892. almost

  1893. make

  1894. an

  1895. not

  1896. part

  1897. of

  1898. the

  1899. way

  1900. we

  1901. try

  1902. to

  1903. deal

  1904. with

  1905. it

  1906. is

  1907. by

  1908. trying

  1909. to

  1910. almost

  1911. make

  1912. an

  1913. idol

  1914. out

  1915. of

  1916. us

  1917. being

  1918. enough

  1919. in

  1920. the

  1921. other

  1922. person's

  1923. life

  1924. or

  1925. sufficient

  1926. in

  1927. the

  1928. other

  1929. person's

  1930. life

  1931. but

  1932. you

  1933. know

  1934. what

  1935. we're

  1936. never

  1937. sufficient

  1938. and

  1939. enough

  1940. in

  1941. another

  1942. person's

  1943. life

  1944. because

  1945. we're

  1946. creatures

  1947. not

  1948. the

  1949. creator

  1950. like

  1951. if

  1952. I

  1953. try

  1954. to

  1955. become

  1956. everything

  1957. to

  1958. Louise

  1959. statistically

  1960. I

  1961. will die

  1962. before

  1963. Louise

  1964. if

  1965. you

  1966. saw

  1967. how

  1968. I

  1969. ate

  1970. and

  1971. she

  1972. ate

  1973. I'm

  1974. going

  1975. to

  1976. die

  1977. long

  1978. before

  1979. Louise

  1980. and

  1981. I

  1982. am

  1983. never

  1984. sufficient

  1985. in

  1986. another

  1987. person's

  1988. life

  1989. in

  1990. the

  1991. way

  1992. that

  1993. part

  1994. of

  1995. that

  1996. idolatrous

  1997. part

  1998. of

  1999. me

  2000. that

  2001. wants

  2002. to

  2003. be

  2004. like

  2005. God

  2006. is

  2007. enough

  2008. and

  2009. often

  2010. when

  2011. we

  2012. get

  2013. wounded

  2014. by

  2015. betrayal

  2016. and

  2017. we

  2018. get

  2019. wounded

  2020. by

  2021. pornography

  2022. and

  2023. we

  2024. get

  2025. just

  2026. wounded

  2027. by

  2028. life

  2029. part

  2030. of

  2031. our

  2032. desire

  2033. is

  2034. to

  2035. become

  2036. somehow

  2037. something

  2038. that we

  2039. can

  2040. never

  2041. be

  2042. you

  2043. see

  2044. what

  2045. the

  2046. gospel

  2047. is

  2048. doing

  2049. here

  2050. for

  2051. us

  2052. is

  2053. it's

  2054. starting

  2055. to

  2056. try

  2057. to

  2058. get

  2059. us

  2060. to

  2061. take

  2062. off

  2063. the

  2064. burden

  2065. of

  2066. trying

  2067. to be

  2068. like

  2069. a

  2070. God

  2071. to

  2072. another

  2073. person

  2074. or

  2075. even

  2076. desiring

  2077. it

  2078. and

  2079. at

  2080. the

  2081. same

  2082. time

  2083. it

  2084. comforts

  2085. us

  2086. on

  2087. another

  2088. level

  2089. because

  2090. we

  2091. it's

  2092. trying

  2093. to

  2094. help

  2095. us

  2096. to

  2097. understand

  2098. that

  2099. okay

  2100. George

  2101. just

  2102. saying

  2103. that

  2104. you're

  2105. not

  2106. enough

  2107. in that

  2108. sense

  2109. doesn't

  2110. mean

  2111. you're

  2112. nothing

  2113. like

  2114. the

  2115. choice

  2116. isn't

  2117. as a

  2118. creature

  2119. between

  2120. being

  2121. like

  2122. God

  2123. or

  2124. being

  2125. like

  2126. garbage

  2127. that's

  2128. your

  2129. rebellious

  2130. nature

  2131. against

  2132. God

  2133. speaking

  2134. that's

  2135. the

  2136. devil

  2137. speaking

  2138. that's

  2139. not

  2140. God

  2141. speaking

  2142. to

  2143. you

  2144. it

  2145. is

  2146. not

  2147. a

  2148. diminishment

  2149. of

  2150. me

  2151. for

  2152. God

  2153. to

  2154. remind

  2155. me

  2156. that

  2157. I'm

  2158. a

  2159. creature

  2160. that's

  2161. God's

  2162. word

  2163. reminding

  2164. me

  2165. of

  2166. what's

  2167. true

  2168. and

  2169. so

  2170. on

  2171. one

  2172. hand

  2173. this

  2174. text

  2175. is

  2176. warning

  2177. us

  2178. in

  2179. our

  2180. response

  2181. to

  2182. heartbreak

  2183. to

  2184. desire

  2185. to

  2186. become

  2187. like

  2188. an

  2189. idol

  2190. to

  2191. the

  2192. other

  2193. person

  2194. and

  2195. as

  2196. the

  2197. gospel

  2198. grips

  2199. us

  2200. as

  2201. we

  2202. realize

  2203. that

  2204. Christ

  2205. has

  2206. defeated

  2207. sin

  2208. Christ

  2209. has

  2210. defeated

  2211. death

  2212. Christ

  2213. has

  2214. defeated

  2215. hell

  2216. and

  2217. Christ

  2218. has

  2219. defeated

  2220. me

  2221. to

  2222. save

  2223. me

  2224. and

  2225. to

  2226. deliver

  2227. me

  2228. and

  2229. as

  2230. that

  2231. grips

  2232. us

  2233. we

  2234. realize

  2235. we

  2236. realize

  2237. that

  2238. we

  2239. might

  2240. have

  2241. to

  2242. live

  2243. with

  2244. many

  2245. disappointments

  2246. in

  2247. life

  2248. but

  2249. we

  2250. have

  2251. a

  2252. sufficiency

  2253. that

  2254. God

  2255. is

  2256. enough

  2257. and

  2258. as

  2259. we're

  2260. gripped

  2261. by the

  2262. gospel

  2263. and

  2264. understand

  2265. that

  2266. God

  2267. is

  2268. enough

  2269. that

  2270. maybe

  2271. there

  2272. starts

  2273. to

  2274. become

  2275. to

  2276. us

  2277. enough

  2278. self

  2279. possession

  2280. to

  2281. confront

  2282. our

  2283. loved

  2284. one

  2285. not

  2286. out

  2287. of

  2288. an

  2289. idolatry

  2290. of

  2291. our

  2292. self

  2293. but

  2294. of

  2295. being

  2296. gripped

  2297. by

  2298. what

  2299. Christ

  2300. has

  2301. done

  2302. for

  2303. us

  2304. in

  2305. the

  2306. gospel

  2307. please

  2308. stand

  2309. some

  2310. of

  2311. us

  2312. have

  2313. work

  2314. to

  2315. do

  2316. with

  2317. God

  2318. because

  2319. maybe

  2320. we

  2321. realize

  2322. that

  2323. there's

  2324. ways

  2325. in our

  2326. lives

  2327. that

  2328. we're

  2329. living

  2330. that

  2331. are

  2332. really

  2333. unbalanced

  2334. because

  2335. we're

  2336. unbalanced

  2337. about

  2338. this

  2339. stuff

  2340. of

  2341. being

  2342. enough

  2343. or

  2344. sufficient

  2345. and

  2346. to

  2347. be

  2348. gripped

  2349. by

  2350. this

  2351. knowledge

  2352. of

  2353. what

  2354. Christ

  2355. has

  2356. done

  2357. for

  2358. us

  2359. on

  2360. the

  2361. cross

  2362. and

  2363. that

  2364. he

  2365. makes

  2366. he

  2367. that

  2368. God

  2369. is

  2370. sufficient

  2371. and

  2372. as

  2373. we

  2374. rest

  2375. in

  2376. him

  2377. and

  2378. as

  2379. we

  2380. rest

  2381. in

  2382. Christ

  2383. there

  2384. is

  2385. a

  2386. sufficiency

  2387. that

  2388. comes

  2389. into

  2390. our

  2391. lives

  2392. that

  2393. helps

  2394. us

  2395. to

  2396. live

  2397. as

  2398. creatures

  2399. and

  2400. to

  2401. share

  2402. about

  2403. what

  2404. God

  2405. does

  2406. and

  2407. some

  2408. of

  2409. us

  2410. here's

  2411. the

  2412. other

  2413. wonderful

  2414. thing

  2415. about

  2416. this

  2417. is

  2418. if

  2419. you're

  2420. here

  2421. and

  2422. you're

  2423. still

  2424. on

  2425. the

  2426. fence

  2427. about

  2428. trying

  2429. to

  2430. know

  2431. whether

  2432. to

  2433. give

  2434. your

  2435. life

  2436. to

  2437. Jesus

  2438. there

  2439. is

  2440. no

  2441. one

  2442. so

  2443. battered

  2444. or

  2445. so

  2446. broken

  2447. no

  2448. one

  2449. so

  2450. much

  2451. of

  2452. a

  2453. failure

  2454. and

  2455. no

  2456. one

  2457. so

  2458. successful

  2459. or

  2460. so

  2461. young

  2462. or

  2463. so

  2464. good

  2465. looking

  2466. there

  2467. is

  2468. no

  2469. one

  2470. who

  2471. is

  2472. not

  2473. going

  2474. from

  2475. death

  2476. to

  2477. death

  2478. and

  2479. Jesus

  2480. died

  2481. so

  2482. that

  2483. you

  2484. will

  2485. go

  2486. from

  2487. life

  2488. to

  2489. life

  2490. and

  2491. there

  2492. is

  2493. no

  2494. better

  2495. time

  2496. than

  2497. now

  2498. to

  2499. call

  2500. out

  2501. to

  2502. Jesus

  2503. to

  2504. say

  2505. Jesus

  2506. I lay

  2507. down

  2508. my

  2509. sword

  2510. and

  2511. I lay

  2512. down

  2513. my

  2514. shield

  2515. and

  2516. I

  2517. take

  2518. off

  2519. the

  2520. false

  2521. armor

  2522. that

  2523. I've

  2524. trusted

  2525. and

  2526. I

  2527. put

  2528. it

  2529. on

  2530. the

  2531. ground

  2532. and

  2533. I

  2534. bow

  2535. to

  2536. you

  2537. that

  2538. you

  2539. will

  2540. defeat

  2541. me

  2542. and

  2543. be

  2544. my

  2545. savior

  2546. and

  2547. he

  2548. will

  2549. cast

  2550. no

  2551. one

  2552. away

  2553. absolutely

  2554. no

  2555. one

  2556. let's

  2557. bow

  2558. our heads

  2559. in

  2560. prayer

  2561. father

  2562. you

  2563. know

  2564. how

  2565. many

  2566. of

  2567. us

  2568. are

  2569. wrestling

  2570. with

  2571. questions

  2572. as to

  2573. whether

  2574. we

  2575. are

  2576. enough

  2577. and

  2578. whether

  2579. we

  2580. are

  2581. sufficient

  2582. and

  2583. you

  2584. know

  2585. father

  2586. how

  2587. many

  2588. of

  2589. us

  2590. are

  2591. wishing

  2592. that

  2593. if

  2594. we

  2595. just

  2596. had

  2597. more

  2598. money

  2599. we'd

  2600. be

  2601. sufficient

  2602. that

  2603. money

  2604. will

  2605. be

  2606. our

  2607. sufficiency

  2608. or

  2609. being

  2610. slim

  2611. or

  2612. being

  2613. young

  2614. or

  2615. being

  2616. wise

  2617. or

  2618. being

  2619. whatever

  2620. father

  2621. you

  2622. know

  2623. all

  2624. of

  2625. those

  2626. things

  2627. even

  2628. those

  2629. of

  2630. us

  2631. who

  2632. have

  2633. put

  2634. our

  2635. faith

  2636. and

  2637. you

  2638. know

  2639. how

  2640. we

  2641. wrestle

  2642. with

  2643. these

  2644. things

  2645. and

  2646. still

  2647. you

  2648. love

  2649. us

  2650. we

  2651. give

  2652. you

  2653. thanks

  2654. and

  2655. praise

  2656. that

  2657. in

  2658. Jesus

  2659. we

  2660. have

  2661. been

  2662. saved

  2663. we

  2664. are

  2665. being

  2666. saved

  2667. and

  2668. we

  2669. will

  2670. be

  2671. saved

  2672. and

  2673. we

  2674. ask

  2675. father

  2676. that

  2677. you

  2678. grow

  2679. within

  2680. us

  2681. an

  2682. awareness

  2683. of

  2684. the

  2685. places

  2686. the

  2687. wrong

  2688. and

  2689. false

  2690. places

  2691. we

  2692. go

  2693. for

  2694. confidence

  2695. and

  2696. sufficiency

  2697. and

  2698. that

  2699. you

  2700. would

  2701. grip

  2702. us

  2703. again

  2704. with

  2705. the

  2706. gospel

  2707. that

  2708. your

  2709. word

  2710. would

  2711. come

  2712. that

  2713. was

  2714. read

  2715. this

  2716. morning

  2717. that

  2718. many

  2719. of

  2720. us

  2721. would

  2722. memorize

  2723. this

  2724. passage

  2725. of

  2726. scripture

  2727. that

  2728. would

  2729. enter

  2730. into

  2731. our

  2732. lives

  2733. and

  2734. as

  2735. it

  2736. enters

  2737. into

  2738. our

  2739. lives

  2740. and

  2741. is

  2742. written

  2743. on

  2744. our

  2745. hearts

  2746. that

  2747. in

  2748. our

  2749. day

  2750. to

  2751. day

  2752. lives

  2753. we

  2754. bear

  2755. fruit

  2756. that

  2757. brings

  2758. you

  2759. much

  2760. glory

  2761. father

  2762. do

  2763. this

  2764. work

  2765. in

  2766. our

  2767. heart

  2768. and

  2769. all

  2770. this
