  1. Father, the scripture text warns us that the God of this age can blind our hearts.

  2. And Father, your word tells us that we, by our human efforts, cannot stop this.

  3. Father, we call out to you.

  4. We ask for your mercy.

  5. Father, you see us as we really are.

  6. You see the unseen presences as well.

  7. And we ask, Father, that you would gently but deeply and powerfully pour out your Holy Spirit upon us.

  8. Pour out your Holy Spirit upon us.

  9. That you would, Father, shine the light of your gospel in the center of who we are.

  10. That Jesus would truly be our Savior and Lord.

  11. That you would make us disciples of Jesus, gripped by the gospel, who are living for your glory.

  12. Father, this we ask in Jesus' name. Amen.

  13. Please be seated.

  14. Amen.

  15. Amen.

  16. Amen.

  17. So, this week, so all week, I'm looking at the scripture text.

  18. And on Friday, I have a conversation with somebody at one of my favorite coffee shops.

  19. I've had several conversations with this person.

  20. And they make a point of telling me that they just watched a television show this week.

  21. And in the television show, it revolves around a person that is the Antichrist.

  22. And God keeps telling people to try to kill the Antichrist.

  23. And the Antichrist is a very sympathetic figure.

  24. A bit obviously conflicted.

  25. But, you know, we like conflicted figures.

  26. But a sympathetic figure.

  27. And God's trying to, is telling people to go and kill this person.

  28. And so my friend tells me this.

  29. And she says, I hate this.

  30. You know, I hate, I hate the way it seems that God's always telling people to kill other people.

  31. And so, you know, for many in our culture, the way they understand and the way we understand who God is,

  32. there's something very common in our culture today.

  33. That for many people in our culture, they fear that the God that religious people talk about

  34. and that even spiritual people talk about, that his, or I guess in our culture, they'd say her or it or whatever,

  35. but that, I'll use Christian language, that the God that religious or Christian people talk about,

  36. that if you get close to him, where you listen to him or you read his scriptures,

  37. that all he's going to want to do is ultimately have you kill people

  38. or do other really, really bad things towards you.

  39. And it's so interesting that I had this conversation after I'd been thinking about the scripture text all week

  40. because it was one of those times where the scripture text that I'd been thinking about all week

  41. really helped me to be able to explain to her, talk to her about her particular fears.

  42. So it'd be a great help to me if you would open your Bibles and turn to 2 Corinthians 4, verses 1 to 6.

    2 Corinthians 4:1–6

  43. And I don't know if you noticed it, but there's some stuff in this text of the Bible

  44. that really addresses our fears and helps us in conversations like this.

  45. And let's be honest as well.

  46. This isn't just a fear that goes on outside of the church,

  47. but many Christians at different times in our lives, maybe some of you here this morning,

  48. you fear that if you get too close to Jesus, if you take the Bible too seriously,

  49. that it's going to call you to do things that's going to hurt you,

  50. that's going to make you less of a person.

  51. It's going to belittle you.

  52. It's not just a fear that there's outside, but many of us at some level have that deep type of a fear as well,

  53. that if we trust God's word, if we trust Jesus, it's going to hurt us.

  54. And so it's almost as if we want to say, don't be too close to Jesus.

  55. Well, we know that you're not allowed to say that.

  56. That's not the right thing to say.

  57. And so we're conflicted as well, if we're honest.

  58. So let's look.

  59. And actually, it's interesting because the text at first glance,

  60. and this often happens with the Bible,

  61. at first glance, the text doesn't seem as if it's going to be very helpful.

  62. But actually, right off the bat in 2 Corinthians chapter 4,

    2 Corinthians 4 chapter mention

  63. it says something very, very powerful and very, very helpful.

  64. It's one of those things that it doesn't look helpful,

  65. but it actually is helpful if we stop and think about it.

  66. Because it begins like this.

  67. Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God,

  68. we do not lose heart.

  69. Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God,

  70. we do not lose heart.

  71. Now, you know, it has that word therefore there.

  72. I know I'm going to lose you as soon as I make a grammar geek type of moment,

  73. but it just means it's following on what had just been said before in chapter 3.

  74. And if you were here last week or you just happen to know the Bible,

  75. it's talking about new covenant ministry.

  76. It's talking about a type of ministry,

  77. which isn't just something that is all about things you just do to the outside of your body,

  78. learn to do this and learn to do this.

  79. And I don't know, learn to sing like this and all.

  80. It's not about it.

  81. It's that there's a type of that God is doing something through his Holy Spirit,

  82. through the death and resurrection of Jesus and the Holy Spirit,

  83. that actually touches us at the level of the heart,

  84. that changes our hearts, gives us live hearts,

  85. that writes on our hearts, that changes our relationship with God.

  86. And that's the ministry that he's talking about.

  87. But notice how it goes.

  88. Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart.

  89. Why is that significant?

  90. It doesn't sound like it's going to help us, but why is it very significant?

  91. If you could put the first point up, that would be great.

  92. Our culture and our time were very confused about these things.

  93. But there can be justice without mercy.

  94. There can be justice without mercy.

  95. But there can be no mercy without justice.

  96. There can be justice without mercy.

  97. There can be no mercy without justice.

  98. One of the things which is so wonderful about the Bible,

  99. and is as you read it, and it's not just the Bible,

  100. it's the words of Jesus that are recorded in the Bible,

  101. that as you read the Bible, justice is always highly valued.

  102. The Bible never, ever, ever tells us to disregard justice.

  103. It never tells us that we should do something and choose injustice over justice.

  104. It never says that, well, you know, some people think this is justice,

  105. and some people think this is injustice, and, you know, we don't really have you.

  106. Just do whatever is going to work best.

  107. Just be practical.

  108. No.

  109. Justice is a high, high value consistently taught in the Scriptures.

  110. It's always taught that you pursue justice and you flee injustice.

  111. It's a very, very high value woven into all of the Scriptures.

  112. But in our culture, what we often think of is,

  113. what we think of sort of justice is,

  114. well, we sort of want justice for other people,

  115. but we don't really want mercy for ourselves.

  116. What we want is a pass.

  117. What we want is to be, in a sense, almost as if the rigors of justice,

  118. that that bright light of justice isn't shone into our heart,

  119. that there's just, or into how we live our lives,

  120. is that there's just a basic acceptance that in every case,

  121. we have a valid excuse and we need to be given a pass.

  122. But the Bible here, it's very, very fascinating.

  123. With its emphasis on mercy, unless we understand that in the biblical world,

  124. you can have justice without mercy.

  125. Many of us have faced a boss or a teacher or somebody

  126. and they've been just to the level of the law, letter of the law,

  127. and we wish that they'd show us some mercy and they didn't show us any mercy.

  128. That happens all of the time.

  129. But when the Bible talks about mercy,

  130. it's assuming that there's perfect justice.

  131. And that mercy is something, in a sense, deeper than justice.

  132. They're both perfectly in God,

  133. so you can't really talk about one being deeper.

  134. But from a human point of view, you can.

  135. That God is completely and utterly just.

  136. And sometimes, in fact, he's always merciful.

  137. And mercy, when it's shown in the presence of justice,

  138. justice always requires sacrifice by the one who's showing mercy.

  139. If I want to show somebody mercy because they've stolen from me,

  140. justice says, you've stolen from me.

  141. Justice says, you've stolen $1,000 from me, or $5,000, or $50.

  142. And justice is just very clear and frank about that.

  143. And maybe it's something that I could call the police on.

  144. But if I was to show them mercy,

  145. if I have some sense that this is a particular case

  146. where I am to show mercy,

  147. then true mercy in that case will maybe mean

  148. that I have to swallow the loss of a lot of that money,

  149. maybe all of that money.

  150. And I think that's one of the reasons why in our culture

  151. we have a great problem with this whole idea of mercy.

  152. Because we, on one hand, always want there to be justice,

  153. but when it comes to us, we don't like this idea

  154. that we've actually done something terribly, deeply wrong,

  155. that a debt of some type has to be paid and satisfied,

  156. that we might be in such a weak position.

  157. So we want a pass.

  158. But the Bible doesn't say,

  159. therefore having this ministry because we've been given a pass.

  160. It says, therefore having this ministry by the mercy of God,

  161. we do not lose heart.

  162. If you could put the next point up, that would be great.

  163. If the first point was that there can be justice without mercy,

  164. there can be no mercy without justice.

  165. The second point is that we think that justice is our greatest need.

  166. But God in his mercy knows that mercy is our greatest need.

  167. God in his mercy knows that mercy is our greatest need.

  168. We want rights.

  169. God offers justice and mercy.

  170. And in fact, it's beyond that.

  171. We're going to be talking about this quite a bit in a couple of weeks.

  172. But one of the things which is so wonderful about the cross of Jesus

  173. is that in the cross of Jesus,

  174. God is constantly perfectly just.

  175. But mercy triumphs in a sense over judgment and God's justice.

  176. And God shows mercy to us in the person of his Son

  177. at great cost to himself.

  178. He shows us mercy.

  179. He sees you and me perfectly.

  180. He sees us with perfect justice.

  181. And with his perfect justice in his eyes of love,

  182. he sees that by justice alone,

  183. we are in deep trouble.

  184. And because he loves us,

  185. he offers mercy.

  186. Now, some of you might say,

  187. George,

  188. I don't know what to think about that.

  189. You know, here's the thing I wonder about with that, George.

  190. I mean, that sounds,

  191. I mean, I have to think about it,

  192. you know, justice and mercy.

  193. And I have to think about it.

  194. But, you know, George,

  195. you know, sometimes,

  196. you know, you're saying that the cross,

  197. there's perfect justice and perfect mercy.

  198. You know, George,

  199. one of the things I notice about spiritual people

  200. is they often just say contradictory things

  201. and then they just say it,

  202. you know,

  203. as if somehow contradictory things

  204. can just both be true at the same time.

  205. And, you know,

  206. they sort of smile

  207. and it's just spiritual.

  208. You know, like, George,

  209. I've read Kahil Gibran

  210. and it's just a whole pile

  211. of contradictory things

  212. written in a certain flowery type of tone

  213. that looks spiritual.

  214. But if you actually look at it,

  215. it's just nonsense.

  216. I didn't really mean to insult people

  217. who like Kahil Gibran,

  218. but I'm actually going to probably stick

  219. by what I said.

  220. And then other people say,

  221. you know, George,

  222. the thing about religious people

  223. is they're full of contradictions.

  224. They say one thing for others,

  225. but they're really trying to do

  226. very, very different types of things.

  227. And so, George,

  228. like, I can't remember everything

  229. about the scripture text

  230. and I forgot my Bible

  231. and I'm just listening to you,

  232. but didn't when you read the Bible

  233. just a few minutes ago,

  234. 2 Corinthians 4,

  235. didn't the Bible contradict itself

  236. just within a couple of verses?

  237. Didn't it say we don't preach ourselves,

  238. but didn't it also say

  239. that we commend ourselves?

  240. Like, isn't that just sort of a,

  241. you know, George,

  242. it's just so full of contradictions

  243. it doesn't really make sense.

  244. Well, that, I mean,

  245. maybe you did notice that.

  246. Is the Bible contradicting itself?

  247. Is what many people say

  248. about spiritual?

  249. I mean, often it's very true

  250. that spiritual people

  251. will just say

  252. completely contradictory things

  253. that don't make any sense,

  254. but because it's spiritual

  255. they can say it.

  256. Like, is that,

  257. is the Bible like that?

  258. Like, look down at verse 5.

  259. For what we proclaim

  260. is not ourselves,

  261. but Jesus Christ is Lord

  262. with ourselves for your servants,

  263. as your servants for Jesus' sake.

  264. But look up at verse 2.

  265. So it says we have this ministry

  266. by the mercy of God,

  267. and I'm talking about

  268. how mercy implies

  269. that there's justice.

  270. If there's no justice,

  271. there can't really be mercy.

  272. Verse 2,

  273. But we have renounced

  274. disgraceful, underhanded ways.

  275. We refuse to practice cunning

  276. or to tamper with God's word.

  277. But by the open statement

  278. of the truth,

  279. we would commend ourselves

  280. to everyone's conscience

  281. in the sight of God.

  282. So what's going on here

  283. in the text?

  284. What's going on in the text?

  285. Well,

  286. it's very, very interesting.

  287. This text is looking

  288. very, very deeply

  289. into our human hearts,

  290. and it's noticing

  291. a profound temptation

  292. that we have.

  293. And the profound temptation

  294. that we have, in fact,

  295. is to do things

  296. in an underhanded way

  297. by cunning

  298. and to tamper

  299. with God's word.

  300. Tamper with God's word,

  301. in the original language,

  302. the image is that

  303. if they were selling you

  304. alcohol,

  305. they'd put lots of extra water

  306. in the alcohol.

  307. So they buy, you know,

  308. 10 liters of alcohol,

  309. and they know

  310. they can make more money

  311. if they could sell 30 liters,

  312. so they put 20 liters of water

  313. in with the 10 liters,

  314. and then they sell it,

  315. and they've only paid

  316. for 10 liters.

  317. They sell, you know,

  318. I mean,

  319. that's what tampering means.

  320. It means watering down.

  321. It means changing.

  322. So in fact,

  323. actually here,

  324. the Bible looks

  325. into our human hearts,

  326. and it says,

  327. listen,

  328. whatever this new covenant

  329. ministry is going to be,

  330. before you,

  331. you have to know

  332. that there's something

  333. you have to renounce,

  334. and there's something

  335. you have to pursue.

  336. And what you have to renounce

  337. all of the time,

  338. because it's going to be

  339. a bit of a tendency

  340. within us,

  341. you have to renounce

  342. disgraceful,

  343. underhanded ways.

  344. And by the way,

  345. it doesn't mean

  346. that there's

  347. non-disgraceful,

  348. disgraceful,

  349. underhanded ways.

  350. It's looking at

  351. these two words

  352. that describe one reality,

  353. that anything you do

  354. that's underhanded

  355. is also disgraceful,

  356. it's shameful.

  357. It's something you should

  358. be embarrassed about.

  359. It's something that you

  360. should want to

  361. publicly apologize for.

  362. It's something you should

  363. want to amend your life.

  364. And it's saying,

  365. human beings

  366. can be very underhanded,

  367. and they can practice

  368. cunning.

  369. Cunning is using

  370. all of your abilities

  371. in such a way

  372. that you come up on top,

  373. and the other person's

  374. definitely in a lower position.

  375. And so it's,

  376. in fact,

  377. specifically warning us.

  378. It's warning me.

  379. It's warning you.

  380. George,

  381. there's ways for you

  382. to live,

  383. and ways for you

  384. to talk,

  385. that are underhanded,

  386. and that are cunning,

  387. and that just tamper

  388. with God's word.

  389. And George,

  390. you need to renounce those.

  391. But here's just a bit

  392. of a gut check for us,

  393. a bit of a time out.

  394. For those of us here

  395. who are followers of Jesus,

  396. one of the things

  397. that we need to do

  398. is to pray

  399. that we recognize

  400. when we start

  401. to go down that path.

  402. Because nobody ever wakes up,

  403. you know,

  404. probably nobody wakes up

  405. in the morning

  406. and says,

  407. I'm going to be really

  408. underhanded and cunning today.

  409. I think I'm going to be

  410. really underhanded

  411. with my wife.

  412. That's my plan.

  413. Or with my boss,

  414. I'm just going to be

  415. as underhanded and cunning.

  416. Most of us don't think

  417. that way when we wake up.

  418. But we do things

  419. that might sort of involve,

  420. we just,

  421. it starts to,

  422. we drift to it, right?

  423. And so there's a profound

  424. gut check here

  425. for all of us

  426. that that can be something

  427. that goes on in our lives

  428. and in a sense

  429. as an invitation

  430. for you and me

  431. to pray,

  432. Father in heaven,

  433. help me to recognize

  434. when underhanded,

  435. cunning,

  436. and tampering

  437. seems like the way to go

  438. and I start to walk

  439. down that path.

  440. Help me to recognize it

  441. and help me to run from it,

  442. to renounce it.

  443. And the text is saying

  444. that whatever this new ministry is,

  445. this new covenant ministry,

  446. there's not only something

  447. we renounce,

  448. but there's something

  449. that we pursue.

  450. And that's the second part there.

  451. So read it again,

  452. but we have renounced

  453. disgraceful,

  454. underhanded ways.

  455. We refuse to practice cunning

  456. or to tamper with God's word,

  457. but,

  458. now here's the thing

  459. that we're to pursue,

  460. but by the open statement

  461. of the truth,

  462. we would commend ourselves

  463. to everyone's conscience

  464. in the sight of God.

  465. What that's saying

  466. is that our goal

  467. is the open statement

  468. of the truth.

  469. Open statement

  470. of the truth.

  471. And the truth here

  472. is the gospel.

  473. The truth here

  474. is who Jesus is

  475. and what he's done

  476. through his son.

  477. The truth here

  478. is not just who Jesus is

  479. and what he's done for us

  480. in the work of his son,

  481. but how that fits

  482. into the whole counsel of God

  483. and how the person

  484. and death of Jesus

  485. and his resurrection

  486. helps us to understand

  487. the whole counsel of God.

  488. But the thing

  489. that you and I

  490. are to pursue

  491. is that we are to be

  492. as open as possible

  493. and as clear as possible

  494. that clarity

  495. and openness

  496. is our friend.

  497. It's to characterize

  498. people who follow Jesus.

  499. not mystical gobbledygook,

  500. not contradictions

  501. and you just sort of smile

  502. and say,

  503. well, it's just spiritual.

  504. No, that there's this

  505. task set before us

  506. that we are to try

  507. to be as open as possible

  508. and as clear as possible

  509. about what the truth is.

  510. And when it says

  511. commend ourselves,

  512. what it's meaning

  513. is that that's our goal.

  514. What we should pray

  515. is that when people

  516. talk about our church

  517. or when they talk about you,

  518. they might say,

  519. well, you know what?

  520. I think often

  521. some of his ideas

  522. are kooky.

  523. But you know what?

  524. He's open about them.

  525. He's clear.

  526. Like, he's not hiding things

  527. or she's not hiding anything.

  528. I don't always agree with them,

  529. but you know what?

  530. It's open.

  531. It's clear.

  532. And that's the reputation

  533. that we're to try to have

  534. in the community.

  535. The goal isn't commending ourselves.

  536. The goal is open statement

  537. of the truth.

  538. And it's an open statement

  539. of the truth

  540. which respects people's consciences.

  541. This is a very, very important part of it

  542. that there's this sense

  543. that there's to never be

  544. any type of coercion,

  545. any type of manipulation.

  546. Just, I was only ordained

  547. about three and a half, four years,

  548. and one of the senior priests

  549. in the Diocese of Ottawa,

  550. and I was in the Diocese of Ottawa

  551. at the time,

  552. he gave me advice

  553. about how to do a funeral.

  554. I'm not making this up.

  555. And his advice was,

  556. so you have to do a funeral.

  557. Before the funeral service,

  558. talk to family members

  559. and try to find a touching story

  560. because the point

  561. of your funeral sermon

  562. is to tell several touching stories

  563. to get people to cry.

  564. And when you've brought tears

  565. to their eyes,

  566. your sermon's been a success.

  567. I'm to be underhanded,

  568. cunning,

  569. and manipulative.

  570. And when I succeed

  571. at being emotionally manipulative,

  572. I have become a success.

  573. Isn't that ridiculous?

  574. It's not respecting the conscience

  575. and the integrity of people.

  576. And, you know,

  577. some universities now,

  578. when they talk to,

  579. to like chaplains,

  580. I have to be careful,

  581. but I'm, I, I, this is,

  582. I don't want to name

  583. the specific university,

  584. but a university that I know,

  585. they just asked the chaplains

  586. to come in.

  587. And they had,

  588. the university wanted

  589. the chaplains to sign a thing

  590. saying that they would do

  591. no proselytizing

  592. and no coercion.

  593. And the chaplain that I know,

  594. he was offended.

  595. He said,

  596. what, do you tell

  597. all of your professors

  598. and all of the faculty

  599. that they're not supposed

  600. to use coercion?

  601. Like, why are you singling me out?

  602. Why is it that you think

  603. that I'm going to do coercion?

  604. So he said,

  605. I'll sign the thing

  606. about coercion.

  607. Like, that's like a no-brainer,

  608. but it's offensive.

  609. And you have to take out

  610. the proselytizing part.

  611. Because surely a university

  612. is a place where you talk

  613. about ideas with the,

  614. with the desire

  615. to convince and persuade.

  616. And they,

  617. after some pushback,

  618. they, they relented.

  619. But it shows how the,

  620. how the world views us.

  621. But, you see,

  622. here the text is

  623. that we are to,

  624. by the freedom of conscience,

  625. means that we respect

  626. the integrity of people

  627. and their own pace.

  628. So it's a very,

  629. very powerful teaching

  630. for us as Christians.

  631. But some of you might say,

  632. well, George,

  633. that's very, very interesting.

  634. And I,

  635. I'm glad that the text

  636. is wanting,

  637. encouraging you

  638. to respect the freedom

  639. and conscience of people.

  640. And,

  641. and for those of us

  642. who are here,

  643. there's, you know,

  644. not only is the text

  645. telling us

  646. that we're to pray

  647. that we walk away

  648. from any type

  649. of emotional manipulation,

  650. any type of coercion,

  651. anything like that,

  652. that we're to flee it.

  653. But it's also

  654. that we should pray

  655. that we can be open

  656. and be clear.

  657. And that's a,

  658. we should pray for that,

  659. that we can be open

  660. and we can be clear

  661. when we speak.

  662. But,

  663. but some will say,

  664. George,

  665. I don't know,

  666. you know,

  667. maybe you just really

  668. have to do a lot more praying.

  669. But whenever you speak

  670. about the gospel

  671. and what Jesus did

  672. for us on the cross,

  673. it's not really clear to me.

  674. So I guess,

  675. George,

  676. you just really need

  677. to do a lot more praying.

  678. Well,

  679. I do need to do

  680. a lot more praying

  681. and you can pray

  682. that I can be more,

  683. I'm more,

  684. more clear.

  685. But,

  686. is it just a matter

  687. that if we get

  688. more and more

  689. and more clear

  690. then that people

  691. will automatically

  692. just want to trust Jesus?

  693. If we try to share

  694. the gospel

  695. or talk about Jesus

  696. with our friend

  697. and we get tongue-tied

  698. and we go away

  699. should we feel depressed

  700. that we've been

  701. such a failure

  702. at attempting

  703. to share Jesus?

  704. Because if we just

  705. were clearer

  706. they would come

  707. and they would

  708. give their lives

  709. to Jesus.

  710. Well,

  711. the Bible talks

  712. about that.

  713. And in fact,

  714. it's this very next bit

  715. that helped me

  716. to also talk

  717. to my friend

  718. about this idea

  719. that God

  720. wants people

  721. to kill people.

  722. Did you notice

  723. it's verses 3 and 4?

  724. And even if our gospel

  725. is veiled

  726. it is veiled

  727. to those who are perishing.

  728. In their case

  729. the God of this world

  730. has blinded the minds

  731. of the unbelievers

  732. to keep them

  733. from seeing

  734. the light of the gospel

  735. of the glory of Christ

  736. who is the image of God.

  737. It's sort of a dense text.

  738. Look at it again

  739. in verse 3.

  740. And even if our gospel

  741. is veiled

  742. it is veiled

  743. to those who are perishing.

  744. In their case

  745. the God of this world

  746. has blinded the minds

  747. of the unbelievers

  748. to keep them

  749. from seeing

  750. the light of the gospel

  751. of the glory of Christ

  752. who is the image of God.

  753. And for some of you

  754. when you hear this

  755. all sorts of things

  756. are going through your head.

  757. Some might be offended by it.

  758. Here's the thing

  759. which

  760. if you could put up

  761. the next point

  762. that would be great.

  763. what I said

  764. to my friend

  765. is

  766. I said

  767. you know

  768. we've had lots of

  769. conversations about God

  770. and this is a bit

  771. of a persistent theme

  772. for you.

  773. You tell me

  774. you don't believe in God

  775. and then you

  776. also tell me

  777. that the God

  778. when you talk about God

  779. God's always

  780. wanted people

  781. to do horrible things

  782. and then you say

  783. you don't believe

  784. such a God exists.

  785. I want you to know

  786. I don't believe

  787. that God exists either.

  788. Like if that is the God

  789. that's the only option

  790. on the table

  791. I'm an atheist.

  792. But here's the thing

  793. I said to her.

  794. I actually expressed it

  795. a little bit.

  796. I said the God

  797. that you think exists

  798. wants people to die.

  799. But the God

  800. who is revealed

  801. in the Bible

  802. dies for people.

  803. That's what I said to her.

  804. Because I'd been reflecting

  805. on this text all week.

  806. the God

  807. that you

  808. worry exists

  809. and you don't believe in

  810. is a God

  811. who wants people

  812. to die

  813. who gets people

  814. to kill people.

  815. The God

  816. who's revealed

  817. in the Bible

  818. is a God

  819. who dies

  820. for people.

  821. It's a completely

  822. different God.

  823. Completely

  824. and utterly

  825. different God.

  826. and

  827. I mean

  828. we didn't talk

  829. for very much

  830. longer after that.

  831. It's just often

  832. really a matter

  833. of leaving seeds.

  834. But you know

  835. for many people

  836. in our culture

  837. they don't make

  838. a distinction

  839. between Christianity

  840. and Islam

  841. and Hinduism

  842. and stuff.

  843. They just see it

  844. as religious people

  845. or spiritual people

  846. talking about God

  847. and the newspapers

  848. and everything

  849. are filled

  850. with atrocious things

  851. being done

  852. in the name of Jesus

  853. or in the name

  854. of Muhammad

  855. or in the name

  856. of some Hindu God

  857. or in the name

  858. of Buddhism.

  859. It's filled

  860. with honor killings

  861. and shame killings

  862. and for many people

  863. in our culture

  864. they make no distinction

  865. between any of these things.

  866. They just see it

  867. as religious people.

  868. But the Bible here says

  869. that there's a God

  870. of this age

  871. and for many people

  872. in our culture

  873. what they're afraid of

  874. when they think of God

  875. is what they're really

  876. afraid of

  877. is the devil.

  878. For many people

  879. in our culture

  880. when they talk

  881. if you let them

  882. talk a little bit

  883. about what God

  884. is like

  885. and what he does

  886. what they're really doing

  887. is describing the devil.

  888. They're not describing

  889. the God

  890. who's described

  891. in the Bible.

  892. And that's why

  893. it's so interesting

  894. that the Bible says

  895. it's the God

  896. of this age

  897. that he blinds people.

  898. And here's the next thing

  899. if you could put it up there

  900. Andrew

  901. that would be great.

  902. There's a profound

  903. and I know

  904. it's going to be

  905. a bit of a shocking thing

  906. to some of us

  907. and it sounds like

  908. an arrogant thing

  909. but let me just

  910. put it out there

  911. and then I'll tell you why

  912. and rather than

  913. being arrogant

  914. I mean it's always

  915. possible for us

  916. to take anything

  917. and be arrogant about it.

  918. I mean I know people

  919. who get arrogant

  920. about how good

  921. they are at fantasy football

  922. like really?

  923. Come on.

  924. That's just fantasy football

  925. you know

  926. like that doesn't mean anything

  927. you know

  928. but oh well

  929. you know whatever

  930. the ranking is.

  931. Anyway

  932. so we can be arrogant

  933. about anything

  934. but this in fact

  935. it's not arrogant

  936. it's the complete

  937. opposite of arrogance.

  938. We share the gospel

  939. with people

  940. who are veiled

  941. and blind.

  942. In other words

  943. we share the gospel

  944. with people

  945. who are wearing

  946. blindfolds

  947. and underneath

  948. the blindfolds

  949. the devil

  950. has blinded them.

  951. And that's the context

  952. within which

  953. we always share

  954. the gospel

  955. not just in this culture

  956. but in every culture.

  957. And it's a very

  958. very powerful image.

  959. It's an image

  960. that when we hear it

  961. we realize

  962. that it means

  963. that we have to

  964. constantly be on our knees

  965. in prayer.

  966. I mean

  967. in a sense

  968. in that conversation

  969. that I had on Friday

  970. what matters

  971. on one hand

  972. it matters

  973. that I tried to be clear

  974. about who Jesus is

  975. and how he's different

  976. and how the Bible

  977. is different

  978. than what she fears

  979. God is like.

  980. But equally important

  981. is that afterwards

  982. I pray for her.

  983. Because it's not

  984. just a matter

  985. of my having

  986. wonderful examples

  987. and being very clear

  988. and being good

  989. at rhetoric.

  990. although I'm to try

  991. to have an open

  992. statement of the truth.

  993. But

  994. God has to do

  995. a work in her heart.

  996. But some of you

  997. might say

  998. George

  999. my

  1000. whoa

  1001. you know

  1002. George

  1003. are you saying

  1004. that you can see

  1005. but I can't

  1006. that

  1007. that you're

  1008. I'm blind

  1009. but you're not

  1010. well let's just

  1011. first of all

1012. this is not a completely

1013. I mean this is actually

  1014. talking very much

  1015. about what normal

  1016. human experience

  1017. is like.

  1018. I mean don't we all

  1019. have times

  1020. where we realize

1021. in all of our lives

1022. you know we can say

  1023. about somebody

1024. you know they're so smart

  1025. they're so confident

1026. how can they be blind

  1027. to this?

  1028. Right?

1029. You know how is it

1030. that we can have people

  1031. who are just

1032. you know they're so good

  1033. at reading people

  1034. and they're so good

  1035. at reading their boss

  1036. or they're so good

  1037. at reading their co-workers

  1038. but they're blind

1039. when it comes to their kids.

1040. Like we could go on

  1041. and on and on

  1042. it's a very very common

  1043. thing that people

  1044. can have great understanding

1045. about lots of different things

  1046. but in certain areas

  1047. of their lives

  1048. are completely and utterly

  1049. incapable of seeing.

  1050. That's a human phenomenon

  1051. and the Bible says

1052. the same thing's going on

  1053. with us

1054. and what's going on here

1055. if you were to say

1056. to Paul who wrote this

  1057. that you're being

  1058. very very arrogant

  1059. in the original language

  1060. there's all of these

  1061. all of these hints

  1062. in the language

  1063. that goes back

  1064. in Paul's own biography

  1065. because Paul

  1066. if you go back

1067. to the book of Acts

  1068. three times

1069. in the book of Acts

  1070. it's talked about

1071. how Paul becomes a Christian.

1072. Paul was a very very bad man.

  1073. Paul was a man

1074. that you would not want

1075. to have as your friend.

1076. I guess he would be a man

  1077. that you wouldn't want

1078. to get into his bad books

  1079. because he might contribute

  1080. with other people

  1081. to have you killed

  1082. or beaten

  1083. or thrown in jail

1084. but he was not a good man

  1085. and he was converted

  1086. and his whole story

  1087. of conversion

  1088. is the revelation

  1089. of something

  1090. covering his eyes

  1091. that he's kicking against.

  1092. It's Paul would say

  1093. listen

  1094. I did not become

  1095. a Christian

  1096. because I was

  1097. such a brilliant intellect.

  1098. I was blind

  1099. and veiled

1100. and God had to shine

  1101. his light into mine

  1102. into my heart

1103. and this is to be

  1104. this text

  1105. is a profoundly

  1106. humbling text

  1107. for a Christian.

  1108. it's not George

  1109. because you have

  1110. a really good

  1111. IQ

  1112. AQ

  1113. EQ

  1114. or education.

  1115. You

  1116. George

  1117. were completely

  1118. and utterly

  1119. dependent upon

  1120. God

  1121. and his mercy

  1122. doing something

  1123. in us

  1124. and all of this

  1125. language of shining

  1126. and all of this

  1127. language of

  1128. all of this

  1129. language of seeing

  1130. it's not

  1131. it's not talking

  1132. about mystical

  1133. experiences

  1134. it's talking

  1135. about understanding

  1136. right

  1137. that's how we

  1138. often use it

  1139. in language

  1140. if you're trying

  1141. to help a kid

  1142. with a math

  1143. problem

  1144. and I was

  1145. really good

  1146. at math

  1147. I wasn't very

  1148. good at helping

  1149. my kids

  1150. with math

  1151. because

  1152. you know

  1153. if people

  1154. who are good

  1155. at math

  1156. you just

  1157. look at the

  1158. equation

  1159. and you see

  1160. it

  1161. it just

  1162. makes sense

  1163. and so

  1164. for people

  1165. who are

  1166. really good

  1167. at math

  1168. trying to

  1169. help somebody

  1170. who's not

  1171. good at math

  1172. you just

  1173. look

  1174. it's obvious

  1175. can't you

  1176. see it

  1177. and they

  1178. just can't

  1179. see it

  1180. and the

  1181. language there

  1182. means understand

  1183. and that's

  1184. what it's

  1185. talking about

  1186. here

  1187. and it's

  1188. it's

  1189. all of this

  1190. text is

  1191. saying that

  1192. in a sense

  1193. what I have

  1194. to say to

  1195. my friend

  1196. or anybody

  1197. else

  1198. is listen

  1199. I definitely

  1200. am not

  1201. claiming

  1202. that I am

  1203. better at

  1204. seeing things

  1205. than other

  1206. people

  1207. and I am

  1208. definitely

  1209. not telling

  1210. you that

  1211. it's a

  1212. result of

  1213. my superior

  1214. intellect

  1215. or anything

  1216. like that

  1217. that led

  1218. me to

  1219. become

  1220. Christ

  1221. I am

  1222. one blind

  1223. beggar

  1224. telling another

  1225. blind

  1226. beggar

  1227. where they

  1228. can go

  1229. for someone

  1230. else to

  1231. make them

  1232. see

  1233. that's

  1234. what evangelism

  1235. is

  1236. that's what

  1237. bearing witness

  1238. to Jesus

  1239. is

  1240. it's

  1241. one

  1242. blind

  1243. beggar

  1244. telling

  1245. another

  1246. blind

  1247. beggar

  1248. where you

  1249. can go

  1250. for someone

  1251. to freely

  1252. make you

  1253. see

  1254. and live

  1255. so it's

  1256. very very

  1257. humble

  1258. before we

  1259. read verse

  1260. six

  1261. Andrew

  1262. could you

  1263. put the

  1264. scripture

  1265. text up

  1266. that I

  1267. have

  1268. I've

  1269. forgotten

  1270. to do

  1271. this

  1272. if you

  1273. get nothing

  1274. else out

  1275. of this

  1276. sermon

  1277. other than

  1278. saying this

  1279. verse

  1280. several

  1281. times

  1282. this is

  1283. such a

  1284. beautiful

  1285. verse

  1286. it is

  1287. so worth

  1288. memorizing

  1289. could you

  1290. say it

  1291. out loud

  1292. with me

  1293. please

  1294. for God

  1295. who said

  1296. let light

  1297. shine out

  1298. of darkness

  1299. has shown

  1300. in our

  1301. hearts

  1302. to give

  1303. the light

  1304. of the

  1305. knowledge

  1306. of the

  1307. glory

  1308. of God

  1309. in the

  1310. face

  1311. of Jesus

  1312. Christ

  1313. want to

  1314. say that

  1315. with me

  1316. again

  1317. please

  1318. for God

  1319. who said

  1320. let light

  1321. shine

  1322. out of

  1323. darkness

  1324. has shown

  1325. in our

  1326. hearts

  1327. to give

  1328. the light

  1329. of the

  1330. knowledge

  1331. of the

  1332. glory

  1333. of God

  1334. in the

  1335. face

  1336. of Jesus

  1337. Christ

  1338. so

  1339. so

  1340. so

  1341. beautiful

  1342. look at

  1343. look at

  1344. verses

  1345. five

  1346. and six

  1347. for what

  1348. we proclaim

  1349. is not

  1350. ourselves

  1351. but Jesus

  1352. Christ

  1353. is Lord

  1354. with

  1355. ourselves

  1356. as your

  1357. servants

  1358. for Jesus

  1359. sake

  1360. and then

  1361. verse six

  1362. so what

  1363. the Bible

  1364. is telling us

  1365. if you could

  1366. put up the

  1367. point

  1368. Andrew

  1369. and then

  1370. we'll flip

  1371. back to the

  1372. verse in a

  1373. moment

  1374. but you put

  1375. up the

  1376. point

  1377. we are to

  1378. share the

  1379. gospel

  1380. but only God

  1381. can illuminate

  1382. the human

  1383. heart

  1384. see one of

  1385. the temptations

  1386. we have

  1387. is we have

  1388. these temptations

  1389. to try to think

  1390. that if we just

  1391. emotionally manipulate

  1392. people

  1393. if we just

  1394. practice a

  1395. certain type

  1396. of technological

  1397. or aesthetic

  1398. cunning

  1399. or maybe

  1400. that if we

  1401. just try to

  1402. water down

  1403. God's word

  1404. in some type

  1405. of way

  1406. then they

  1407. can come

  1408. to faith

  1409. but no

  1410. no

  1411. the Bible

  1412. tells us

  1413. that only

  1414. God can

  1415. shine in

  1416. our hearts

  1417. our goal

  1418. is to be

  1419. as opened

  1420. and transparent

  1421. as possible

  1422. and to try

  1423. to be as

  1424. clear as we

  1425. possibly can

  1426. be with

  1427. whatever

  1428. the gray

  1429. matter is

  1430. that God

  1431. has given

  1432. us

  1433. and God

  1434. has given

  1435. some of

  1436. us

  1437. very very

  1438. good gray

  1439. matter

  1440. and some

  1441. of us

  1442. it's not

  1443. quite as

  1444. good

  1445. and some

  1446. of us

  1447. our gray

  1448. matter

  1449. used to

  1450. be sort

  1451. of so-so

  1452. but it's

  1453. getting weaker

  1454. and weaker

  1455. all of the

  1456. time

  1457. but to the

  1458. extent that

  1459. our gray

  1460. matter works

  1461. at all

  1462. we're to try

  1463. to be as

  1464. clear as we

  1465. possibly can

  1466. always knowing

  1467. that only God

  1468. can illuminate

  1469. and this

  1470. for those of us

  1471. who are Christians

  1472. this one of the

  1473. things about this

  1474. verse which is

  1475. so powerful

  1476. is it takes a

  1477. whole burden

  1478. off of you

  1479. parents

  1480. parents

  1481. I mean

  1482. there's things

  1483. that we can

  1484. do to help

  1485. our children

  1486. become Christians

  1487. there's definitely

  1488. things that we

  1489. can do

  1490. but the end

  1491. of the day

  1492. the burden

  1493. of having them

  1494. become a

  1495. Christian

  1496. is not what

  1497. you can

  1498. carry

  1499. only God

  1500. can do it

  1501. I mean

  1502. it might mean

  1503. you have to

  1504. get down

  1505. on your

  1506. knees

  1507. and pray

  1508. it might

  1509. mean

  1510. your life

  1511. has to

  1512. be maybe

  1513. a little

  1514. bit more

  1515. consistent

  1516. with

  1517. the gospel

  1518. but it

  1519. could be

  1520. that even

  1521. after you

  1522. do all

  1523. of those

  1524. things

  1525. all you

  1526. can do

  1527. is pray

  1528. all you

  1529. can do

  1530. is pray

  1531. God is

  1532. not asking

  1533. us to

  1534. carry the

  1535. burden

  1536. of changing

  1537. hearts

  1538. only he

  1539. carries that

  1540. burden

  1541. he can

  1542. easily

  1543. carry it

  1544. and we

  1545. can pray

  1546. and we're

  1547. called to

  1548. pray

  1549. and then

  1550. pray

  1551. and then

  1552. pray

  1553. some more

  1554. for our

  1555. children

  1556. and pray

  1557. for our

  1558. neighbors

  1559. and pray

  1560. for those

  1561. that we

  1562. know in

  1563. the office

  1564. trusting

  1565. that God

  1566. has maybe

  1567. put you

  1568. in your

  1569. office

  1570. or your

  1571. neighborhood

  1572. or your

  1573. community

  1574. your specific

  1575. job is that

  1576. you are there

  1577. to pray for

  1578. the people

  1579. who are around

  1580. you that

  1581. they will

  1582. come to a

  1583. saving faith

  1584. in Jesus

  1585. that they

  1586. will know

  1587. what it

  1588. means to

  1589. be made

  1590. right with

  1591. God

  1592. and God

  1593. has called

  1594. you to

  1595. that vocation

  1596. and maybe

  1597. he will

  1598. give you

  1599. an opportunity

  1600. to say a

  1601. few words

  1602. all it might

  1603. just simply

  1604. be is that

  1605. I follow

  1606. Jesus

  1607. or on Sunday

  1608. I go to

  1609. church

  1610. or I read

  1611. my Bible

  1612. or that I

  1613. pray that

  1614. might be all

  1615. that you

  1616. have to say

  1617. it's all

  1618. part of a

  1619. team project

  1620. of bearing

  1621. witness

  1622. but

  1623. only God

  1624. can illuminate

  1625. hearts

  1626. we're called

  1627. to share

  1628. but only God

  1629. can illuminate

  1630. can we say

  1631. this verse

  1632. again together

  1633. for

  1634. is it up

  1635. for God

  1636. who said

  1637. let light

  1638. shine out

  1639. of darkness

  1640. has shown

  1641. in our

  1642. hearts

  1643. to get

  1644. the light

  1645. of the

  1646. knowledge

  1647. of the

  1648. glory

  1649. of God

  1650. in the

  1651. face

  1652. of Jesus

  1653. Christ

  1654. another thing

  1655. which is so

  1656. powerful about

  1657. this particular

  1658. text

  1659. is that

  1660. he quotes

  1661. the creation

  1662. story

  1663. and this

  1664. is very

  1665. very

  1666. very

  1667. important

  1668. you know

  1669. I've

  1670. mentioned

  1671. a little

  1672. bit

  1673. off and

  1674. on

  1675. over the

  1676. last few

  1677. weeks

  1678. but for

  1679. what the

  1680. text is

  1681. saying

  1682. is that

  1683. the very

  1684. very

  1685. same

  1686. God

  1687. who's

  1688. there

  1689. and creates

  1690. all things

  1691. and begins

  1692. in Genesis

  1693. the Genesis

  1694. account of

  1695. the creation

  1696. story

  1697. God

  1698. says let

  1699. there be

  1700. light

  1701. and then

  1702. there's

  1703. light

  1704. he separates

  1705. the light

  1706. from the

  1707. darkness

  1708. and the

  1709. very

  1710. same

  1711. God

  1712. who

  1713. creates

  1714. all

  1715. things

  1716. is the

  1717. same

  1718. God

  1719. who

  1720. shines

  1721. in our

  1722. hearts

  1723. to bring

  1724. us to

  1725. Jesus

  1726. it's not

  1727. two

  1728. gods

  1729. here's the

  1730. thing

  1731. I've shared

  1732. this with

  1733. you before

  1734. the University

  1735. of Ottawa

  1736. the Globe

  1737. and Mail

  1738. the National

  1739. Post

  1740. the CBC

  1741. and Hollywood

  1742. they're all

  1743. committed to

  1744. something which

  1745. is completely

  1746. and utterly

  1747. incoherent

  1748. they're committed

  1749. to the

  1750. the idea

  1751. that everything

  1752. that exists

  1753. exists because

  1754. of pure

  1755. chance

  1756. and then the

  1757. survival of the

  1758. fittest

  1759. therefore love

  1760. each other

  1761. that's

  1762. incoherent

  1763. everything that

  1764. exists is a

  1765. result of

  1766. blind chance

  1767. the survival

  1768. of the fittest

  1769. therefore we

  1770. have to have

  1771. human rights

  1772. and care for

  1773. each other

  1774. it's incoherent

  1775. in our

  1776. culture

  1777. the way

  1778. things come

  1779. to exist

  1780. is through

  1781. evolution

  1782. specifically

  1783. understood in

  1784. such a way

  1785. to exclude

  1786. God

  1787. and the

  1788. way we

  1789. are to

  1790. live our

  1791. lives

  1792. is to

  1793. not hurt

  1794. people

  1795. and when

  1796. we die

  1797. we go to

  1798. a better

  1799. place

  1800. and all

  1801. three of

  1802. those things

  1803. are completely

  1804. and utterly

  1805. incoherent to

  1806. the other

  1807. one

  1808. and the

  1809. only reason

  1810. that nobody

  1811. sees it

  1812. is because

  1813. everybody says

  1814. it

  1815. it's the story

  1816. of the emperor

  1817. in the new

  1818. clothes

  1819. so there's

  1820. this deep

  1821. incoherence

  1822. at the center

  1823. of the modern

  1824. project

  1825. and the

  1826. bible here

  1827. has this

  1828. deep and

  1829. powerful

  1830. coherence

  1831. the very

  1832. same God

  1833. who on the

  1834. first day

  1835. of creation

  1836. said let

  1837. there be

  1838. light

  1839. is the

  1840. same God

  1841. who sends

  1842. his son

  1843. to die

  1844. upon the

  1845. cross

  1846. who is

  1847. the God

  1848. of perfect

  1849. justice

  1850. and perfect

  1851. mercy

  1852. without violating

  1853. his justice

  1854. by being

  1855. perfectly

  1856. just

  1857. he shows

  1858. an even

  1859. greater

  1860. mercy

  1861. so that

  1862. God

  1863. does

  1864. what

  1865. human

  1866. beings

  1867. cannot

  1868. do

  1869. to

  1870. make

  1871. human

  1872. beings

  1873. right

  1874. with

  1875. himself

  1876. in the

  1877. person

  1878. of his

  1879. son

  1880. and his

  1881. death

  1882. upon

  1883. the

  1884. cross

  1885. and the

  1886. same

  1887. God

  1888. who

  1889. creates

  1890. is the

  1891. one

  1892. who

  1893. sends

  1894. his

  1895. son

  1896. is the

  1897. one

  1898. who

  1899. shines

  1900. in our

  1901. hearts

  1902. and is

  1903. the

  1904. one

  1905. who

  1906. will

  1907. make

  1908. the

  1909. new

  1910. heaven

  1911. and

  1912. the

  1913. new

  1914. earth

  1915. it's

  1916. a

  1917. deeply

  1918. coherent

  1919. understanding

  1920. of what

  1921. God

  1922. is doing

  1923. in the

  1924. person

  1925. of his

  1926. son

  1927. it's

  1928. one

  1929. of the

  1930. reasons

  1931. why

  1932. at

  1933. truest

  1934. and

  1935. deepest

  1936. level

  1937. as we

  1938. draw

  1939. near

  1940. to

  1941. God

  1942. it

  1943. will

  1944. not

  1945. hurt

  1946. us

  1947. but

  1948. free

  1949. us

  1950. because

  1951. God

  1952. is the

  1953. creator

  1954. of all

  1955. things

  1956. and

  1957. his

  1958. design

  1959. and

  1960. intent

  1961. was

  1962. that

  1963. we

  1964. would

  1965. fit

  1966. in

  1967. his

  1968. created

  1969. order

  1970. knowing

  1971. that

  1972. we

  1973. are

  1974. creatures

  1975. reconciled

  1976. and at

  1977. one

  1978. with our

  1979. creator

  1980. that we

  1981. would live

  1982. in a

  1983. way

  1984. that the

  1985. creation

  1986. we

  1987. experience

  1988. the

  1989. created

  1990. world

  1991. as a

  1992. blessing

  1993. and so

  1994. as we

  1995. get

  1996. closer

  1997. to

  1998. God

  1999. and

  2000. healed

  2001. it's

  2002. only

  2003. better

  2004. for us

  2005. not

  2006. worse

  2007. goodness

  2008. is good

  2009. for us

  2010. goodness

  2011. is good

  2012. for us

  2013. just

  2014. just

  2015. just

  2016. just

  2017. one

  2018. final

  2019. thing

  2020. for

  2021. those

  2022. who

  2023. are

  2024. here

  2025. who

  2026. have

  2027. not

  2028. yet

  2029. given

  2030. their

  2031. lives

  2032. to

  2033. Jesus

  2034. actually

  2035. just

  2036. say

  2037. this

  2038. text

  2039. one

  2040. more

  2041. time

  2042. and

  2043. then

  2044. I'll

  2045. just

  2046. say

  2047. this

  2048. final

  2049. thing

  2050. let's

  2051. say it

  2052. together

  2053. for

  2054. God

  2055. who

  2056. said

  2057. let

  2058. light

  2059. shine

  2060. out

  2061. of

  2062. darkness

  2063. has

  2064. shown

  2065. in

  2066. our

  2067. hearts

  2068. to

  2069. give

  2070. the

  2071. light

  2072. of

  2073. the

  2074. knowledge

  2075. of

  2076. the

  2077. glory

  2078. of

  2079. God

  2080. in

  2081. the

  2082. face

  2083. of

  2084. Jesus

  2085. Christ

  2086. the

  2087. word

  2088. the

  2089. face

  2090. of

  2091. Jesus

  2092. Christ

  2093. is

  2094. very

  2095. important

  2096. reminds

  2097. us

  2098. that

  2099. it's

  2100. always

  2101. a

  2102. personal

  2103. thing

  2104. that

  2105. he's

  2106. there

  2107. personally

  2108. it's

  2109. Jesus

  2110. looking

  2111. at

  2112. us

  2113. and

  2114. some

  2115. of

  2116. us

  2117. might

  2118. say

  2119. you know

  2120. God

  2121. couldn't

  2122. care

  2123. about

  2124. me

  2125. that

  2126. might

  2127. be

  2128. very

  2129. very

  2130. true

  2131. for

  2132. all

  2133. of

  2134. these

  2135. other

  2136. people

  2137. you

  2138. might

  2139. even

  2140. feel

  2141. a

  2142. little

  2143. bit

  2144. of

  2145. a

  2146. type

  2147. of

  2148. pressure

  2149. coming

  2150. within

  2151. your

  2152. soul

  2153. I

  2154. remember

  2155. when

  2156. I

  2157. became

  2158. a

  2159. Christian

  2160. for

  2161. six

  2162. months

  2163. for

  2164. nine

  2165. months

  2166. prior

  2167. to

  2168. me

  2169. becoming

  2170. a

  2171. Christian

  2172. every

  2173. time

  2174. I

  2175. would

  2176. come

  2177. to

  2178. a

  2179. type

  2180. of

  2181. church

  2182. service

  2183. where

  2184. it

  2185. talked

  2186. about

  2187. a

  2188. thing

  2189. like

  2190. this

  2191. I

  2192. would

  2193. feel

  2194. this

  2195. pressure

  2196. to

  2197. say

  2198. yes

  2199. as if

  2200. God

  2201. was

  2202. pushing

  2203. me

  2204. and

  2205. nudging

  2206. me

  2207. or

  2208. calling

  2209. me

  2210. and

  2211. I

  2212. would

  2213. shut

  2214. it

  2215. down

  2216. this

  2217. can't

  2218. be

  2219. for

  2220. me

  2221. if I

  2222. get

  2223. too

  2224. close

  2225. to

  2226. God

  2227. I

  2228. don't

  2229. want

  2230. to

  2231. do

  2232. it

  2233. and

  2234. I

  2235. would

  2236. shut

  2237. it

  2238. down

  2239. I

  2240. would

  2241. feel

  2242. this

  2243. pressure

  2244. I

  2245. want

  2246. to

  2247. say

  2248. to

  2249. you

  2250. if

  2251. you're

  2252. here

  2253. like

  2254. this

  2255. and

  2256. that's

  2257. been

  2258. what's

  2259. going

  2260. on

  2261. with

  2262. you

  2263. to

  2264. not

  2265. say

  2266. no

  2267. it's

  2268. not

  2269. that

  2270. this

  2271. is

  2272. just

  2273. for

  2274. some

  2275. other

  2276. people

  2277. it's

  2278. for

  2279. you

  2280. quite

  2281. a

  2282. few

  2283. years

  2284. ago

  2285. my

  2286. wife

  2287. and

  2288. I

  2289. were

  2290. in

  2291. Halifax

  2292. on

  2293. a

  2294. weekend

  2295. for

  2296. a

  2297. holiday

  2298. some

  2299. of

  2300. you

  2301. have

  2302. heard

  2303. this

  2304. story

  2305. before

  2306. we

  2307. went

  2308. to

  2309. church

  2310. that

  2311. morning

  2312. we

  2313. met

  2314. this

  2315. fellow

  2316. who

  2317. befriended

  2318. us

  2319. at

  2320. coffee

  2321. we

  2322. had

  2323. a

  2324. brief

  2325. chat

  2326. with

  2327. him

  2328. later

  2329. on

  2330. the

  2331. afternoon

  2332. we're

  2333. walking

  2334. down

  2335. by

  2336. the

  2337. dock

  2338. and

  2339. one

  2340. of

  2341. these

  2342. beautiful

  2343. tall

  2344. ships

  2345. is

  2346. in

  2347. the

  2348. dock

  2349. everybody's

  2350. looking

  2351. at

  2352. this

  2353. beautiful

  2354. gorgeous

  2355. tall

  2356. ship

  2357. and

  2358. Louise

  2359. and I

  2360. are

  2361. there

  2362. and

  2363. we

  2364. watch

  2365. as

  2366. the

  2367. ship

  2368. docks

  2369. and

  2370. there's

  2371. a

  2372. big

  2373. crowd

  2374. all

  2375. looking

  2376. and

  2377. ahhh

  2378. at

  2379. this

  2380. beautiful

  2381. tall

  2382. ship

  2383. and

  2384. out

  2385. of

  2386. the

  2387. crowd

  2388. there's

  2389. these

  2390. people

  2391. they

  2392. all

  2393. have

  2394. these

  2395. hugs

  2396. and

  2397. everything

  2398. like

  2399. that

  2400. and

  2401. they

  2402. go

  2403. on

  2404. the

  2405. ship

  2406. and

  2407. I'm

  2408. not

  2409. making

  2410. this

  2411. up

  2412. and

  2413. one

  2414. of

  2415. the

  2416. people

  2417. who

  2418. gets

  2419. the

  2420. hugs

  2421. and

  2422. goes

  2423. on

  2424. the

  2425. ships

  2426. is

  2427. the

  2428. guy

  2429. who

  2430. befriends

  2431. us

  2432. at

  2433. coffee

  2434. time

  2435. that

  2436. morning

  2437. and

  2438. he

  2439. sees

  2440. in

  2441. the

  2442. crowd

  2443. Louise

  2444. and

  2445. me

  2446. and

  2447. he

  2448. beckons

  2449. for

  2450. us

  2451. to

  2452. come

  2453. and

  2454. walk

  2455. through

  2456. the

  2457. crowd

  2458. and

  2459. go

  2460. on

  2461. the

  2462. tall

  2463. ship

  2464. that's

  2465. what

  2466. Jesus

  2467. is

  2468. doing

  2469. for

  2470. you

  2471. this

  2472. morning

  2473. if

  2474. you're

  2475. feeling

  2476. this

  2477. pressure

  2478. to

  2479. lay

  2480. down

  2481. your

  2482. burdens

  2483. and

  2484. to

  2485. let

  2486. the

  2487. light

  2488. of

  2489. the

  2490. glory

  2491. of

  2492. the

  2493. gospel

  2494. of

  2495. Jesus

  2496. to

  2497. shine

  2498. in

  2499. your

  2500. heart

  2501. that's

  2502. Jesus

  2503. seeing

  2504. you

  2505. out

  2506. of

  2507. the

  2508. crowd

  2509. and

  2510. his

  2511. face

  2512. is

  2513. smiling

  2514. at

  2515. you

  2516. not

  2517. frowning

  2518. because

  2519. he

  2520. died

  2521. for

  2522. you

  2523. and

  2524. he's

  2525. beckoning

  2526. you

  2527. to

  2528. come

  2529. to

  2530. come

  2531. there's

  2532. no

  2533. better

  2534. time

  2535. than

  2536. today

  2537. to

  2538. say

  2539. Jesus

  2540. I

  2541. come

  2542. please

  2543. shine

  2544. the

  2545. light

  2546. in

  2547. my

  2548. heart

  2549. I

  2550. want

  2551. to

  2552. be

  2553. yours

  2554. I

  2555. don't

  2556. want

  2557. to

  2558. be

  2559. in

  2560. darkness

  2561. I

  2562. want

  2563. to

  2564. be

  2565. yours

  2566. thank

  2567. you

  2568. just

  2569. say

  2570. Jesus

  2571. I'm

  2572. thankful

  2573. that

  2574. you

  2575. want

  2576. to

  2577. be

  2578. my

  2579. savior

  2580. I

  2581. want

  2582. to

  2583. be

  2584. yours

  2585. use

  2586. your

  2587. own

  2588. words

  2589. there's

  2590. no

  2591. better

  2592. time

  2593. than

  2594. today

  2595. let's

  2596. stand

  2597. father

  2598. if

  2599. there's

  2600. any

  2601. here

  2602. and

  2603. they

  2604. felt

  2605. this

  2606. pressure

  2607. to

  2608. no

  2609. longer

  2610. fear

  2611. you

  2612. and

  2613. to

  2614. recognize

  2615. that

  2616. what

  2617. they've

  2618. been

  2619. afraid

  2620. of

  2621. is

  2622. the

  2623. devil

  2624. not

  2625. you

  2626. and

  2627. that

  2628. you

  2629. father

  2630. father

  2631. aren't

  2632. aren't

  2633. a

  2634. god

  2635. who

  2636. takes

  2637. delight

  2638. in

  2639. the

  2640. death

  2641. of

  2642. a

  2643. sinner

  2644. your

  2645. delight

  2646. is

  2647. that

  2648. we

  2649. turn

  2650. father

  2651. and

  2652. live

  2653. you

  2654. died

  2655. so

  2656. that

  2657. we

  2658. could

  2659. be

  2660. your

  2661. child

  2662. you

  2663. paid

  2664. that

  2665. great

  2666. price

  2667. that

  2668. mercy

  2669. requires

  2670. so

  2671. that

  2672. we

  2673. can

  2674. be

  2675. reconciled

  2676. to

  2677. you

  2678. father

  2679. grip

  2680. us

  2681. with

  2682. the

  2683. gospel

  2684. grip

  2685. us

  2686. with

  2687. this

  2688. sense

  2689. that

  2690. at the

  2691. heart

  2692. of

  2693. our

  2694. whole

  2695. walk

  2696. with

  2697. you

  2698. father

  2699. is

  2700. your

  2701. great

  2702. mercy

  2703. for

  2704. us

  2705. in

  2706. the

  2707. person

  2708. of

  2709. your

  2710. son

  2711. and

  2712. father

  2713. grip

  2714. us

  2715. with

  2716. how

  2717. mercy

  2718. is

  2719. at

  2720. the

  2721. center

  2722. of

  2723. our

  2724. identity

  2725. in

  2726. Jesus

  2727. grip

  2728. us

  2729. with

  2730. the

  2731. gospel
