  1. Well, very good morning and welcome to our church service this morning.

  2. Great to be able to be with you.

  3. We pray that together we would hear God speak in his words

  4. and that we would enjoy being able to worship at our homes.

  5. I want to begin with words from a letter that Peter wrote, a friend of Jesus,

  6. called Peter, 1 Peter chapter 1, verses 3 and 4.

    1 Peter 1:3

  7. And here we read these wonderful words.

  8. Now we're going to read in our Bibles a short reading today from Matthew chapter 8.

    Matthew 8 chapter mention

  9. Matthew chapter 8.

    Matthew 8 chapter mention

  10. And we are going to read just the first four verses.

  11. And hopefully the words will come up on the screen as well

  12. so you can read along if you don't have access to a Bible.

  13. When Jesus came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him.

  14. A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said,

  15. Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.

  16. Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man.

  17. I am willing, he said, be clean.

  18. Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy.

  19. Then Jesus said to him, see that you don't tell anyone,

  20. but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift Moses commanded as a testimony to them.

  21. And we'll leave our reading there.

  22. So we've been thinking, we started last week thinking, what is faith?

  23. And again, we're on that topic this week,

  24. thinking about the fact that true faith leads to deep restoration.

  25. And we're going to see that in the life of this man that Jesus meets.

  26. I want to begin with a little bit of travel.

  27. Years ago, I went with some school friends to Crete.

  28. And we happened to visit an island called Spinalonga.

  29. I'm sure that's not how you say it.

  30. I'm not sure if any of you have been there.

  31. Well, Spinalonga was a leper colony for the nation of Greece from 1913 until 1957.

  32. At its peak, there were some 400 inhabitants.

  33. Those who were suffering from horrible boils and those debilitating nerve conditions.

  34. And so you have the loss of sensation.

  35. Those inhabitants had been shunned by their communities,

  36. often by their families out of fear as well.

  37. There was a great stigma attached.

  38. And so when a Greek contracted leprosy,

  39. their property was seized by the state.

  40. Their citizenship was cancelled.

  41. They were then transported to Spinalonga.

  42. They received no medical care.

  43. And effectively, they were deported there to die.

  44. An insight into the fear that leprosy brought.

  45. And the tragic life of a leper.

  46. In our current crisis,

  47. I wonder if this is the first time that we've been able to,

  48. as in a sense, enter into, even in a tiny part,

  49. the life of a leper.

  50. The tragedy and the loneliness of that kind of life.

  51. We discovered in the Old Testament and the New Testament

  52. that someone with leprosy, they had to wear a sign saying they were unclean.

  53. If they were close to someone else, they had to shout,

  54. unclean, unclean.

  55. They weren't allowed contact with anyone apart from a fellow leper.

  56. They had to live outside the community.

  57. They would be avoided to avoid potentially contracting the illness.

  58. So theirs was a self-isolation that lasted until death.

  59. And we can begin to feel just something of what that must have been like.

  60. Now, Matthew in his gospel,

  61. in chapters 5 to 7 that we didn't read,

  62. last week we were in chapter 4, 5 to 7,

  63. we're presented with Jesus, the amazing teacher.

  64. He preaches the most famous sermon in history,

  65. the Sermon on the Mount.

  66. And now in chapters 8 to 10,

  67. he focuses our attention on Jesus with amazing power.

  68. There are 10 miracle stories.

  69. And among those miracle stories,

  70. we're also going to see evidence of faith.

  71. So today, let's see together,

  72. how do we see the faith of this leper?

  73. What does faith look like in his case?

  74. And what does the restoration of Jesus look like for the leper?

  75. And then what does that mean for us?

  76. So let's begin with some lessons from a leper on faith.

  77. The first thing to notice is that he is humble.

  78. Now, as Matthew tells the story of Jesus,

  79. we see the focus changes,

  80. as it were moving from a panorama

  81. where there are huge crowds who follow Jesus up the mountain

  82. and he teaches and then they follow him back down the mountain.

  83. Matthew changes now to a zoom lens,

  84. focuses us in verse 2 on a man with leprosy.

  85. And just before we move on,

  86. that's a helpful reminder of how God sees us

  87. and how God deals with us.

  88. He doesn't see us just as a mass of humanity.

  89. He wants to deal with you,

  90. to speak with you,

  91. to know you personally.

  92. Now, what do we learn about this leper?

  93. Well, we're told that this man with leprosy,

  94. he came and verse 2,

  95. he knelt before Jesus.

  96. This is the posture of a lesser before a greater.

  97. As it were, he recognises,

  98. I am the servant

  99. and Jesus is master,

  100. Jesus is king.

  101. Notice too,

  102. there's no demand on his part.

  103. What does he say to Jesus?

  104. In verse 2,

  105. Lord, if you are willing,

  106. you can make me clean.

  107. So he knows

  108. that Jesus has the power to heal.

  109. But,

  110. he doesn't presume on it.

  111. He doesn't stand before Jesus and demand,

  112. this is my right that you heal me.

  113. He doesn't know,

  114. will Jesus be like everyone else?

  115. If I come close to him,

  116. will he body swerve around me?

  117. So we see

  118. faith is humble

  119. in the life of this leper.

  120. And second,

  121. it's very basic,

  122. but it's very important to recognise

  123. that he comes in his need.

  124. Now let's just imagine for a moment

  125. what is involved

  126. in this leper coming to Jesus

  127. in his need.

  128. He is going to most likely

  129. have to face

  130. the stigma

  131. and the disapproval

  132. of others,

  133. perhaps to see the fear

  134. in their face

  135. as he walks by.

  136. He will need to announce,

  137. he will need to shout

  138. his uncleanness

  139. in order for him

  140. to gain access

  141. to Jesus.

  142. And even while

  143. he's on that journey,

  144. he knows there is that possibility

  145. of being rejected.

  146. So then what is it

  147. that motivates him

  148. to take this risk?

  149. Well, he has

  150. leprosy.

  151. Leprosy has often been described

  152. as the death

  153. before death.

  154. So he knows

  155. his great need.

  156. And,

  157. as his words tell us,

  158. he knows

  159. Jesus is his only hope

  160. of salvation

  161. and restoration.

  162. So he comes humbly

  163. and he comes

  164. in his need.

  165. Now let's apply

  166. these lessons

  167. to our lives

  168. for a moment.

  169. I wonder

  170. if today

  171. you find yourself

  172. tuning in

  173. to this church service,

  174. maybe even

  175. to other church services

  176. out of a sense

  177. of desperation.

  178. Where it's not

  179. leprosy,

  180. but perhaps

  181. it's the COVID virus

  182. and its impact

  183. that's turning

  184. your life

  185. upside down.

  186. And maybe

  187. you realise

  188. you need

  189. help that comes

  190. from beyond yourself.

  191. Well,

  192. let me say

  193. that to come

  194. to God

  195. to come

  196. to Jesus

  197. is to come

  198. to the right

  199. source of help.

  200. I was thinking

  201. about the

  202. FA Cup hymn,

  203. Abide With Me.

  204. Some of the words

  205. that we find

  206. there are helpful.

  207. So in

  208. the first verse

  209. we hear,

  210. when other

  211. helpers fail

  212. and comforts

  213. flee,

  214. help of the

  215. helpless,

  216. O

  217. abide with me.

  218. And then

  219. in verse 2,

  220. the prayer

  221. continues,

  222. change and

  223. decay

  224. in all

  225. around I see,

  226. O thou

  227. who

  228. changes

  229. not,

  230. abide

  231. with me.

  232. When we feel

  233. there's no one

  234. else that can

  235. help us,

  236. when we feel

  237. everything,

  238. it is turning

  239. to dust

  240. and decay,

  241. it is wise

  242. to look

  243. to the

  244. unchanging

  245. and good

  246. God,

  247. to Jesus

  248. as the

  249. good

  250. saviour.

  251. Christian faith

  252. is about

  253. humble trust

  254. and dependence,

  255. and not just

  256. sometimes,

  257. but all of the

  258. time.

  259. From the beginning

  260. of the Christian life

  261. to the end

  262. of the Christian life,

  263. we never

  264. outgrow

  265. that need

  266. of Jesus,

  267. our saviour

  268. and elder

  269. brother,

  270. that need

  271. of God,

  272. our Father,

  273. that need

  274. of the Holy

  275. Spirit

  276. to be working

  277. in our lives.

  278. on our

  279. daily exercise

  280. break as a

  281. family,

  282. we quite

  283. often find

  284. ourselves

  285. either cycling

  286. or walking

  287. to one of

  288. the places

  289. nearby,

  290. we're near

  291. Blackford Hill

  292. and Holyrood

  293. Park,

  294. and almost

  295. without fail,

  296. the boys will

  297. find some

  298. rocks to

  299. climb on,

  300. and even

  301. though they're

  302. getting older

  303. and more

  304. confident,

  305. sometimes I'll

  306. still hear

  307. one of

  308. them say,

  309. Dad,

  310. help me,

  311. as they're

  312. struggling to

  313. get up a

  314. particular rock

  315. face.

  316. No matter

  317. what our

  318. age,

  319. no matter

  320. what our

  321. stage in

  322. the Christian

  323. life,

  324. whether we

  325. are looking

  326. to begin,

  327. have just

  328. begun or

  329. have been

  330. a Christian

  331. for years,

  332. that needs

  333. to be our

  334. attitude.

  335. Father God,

  336. help me.

  337. I need

  338. wisdom to

  339. know how

  340. to live

  341. well,

  342. I need

  343. your peace

  344. today,

  345. I need

  346. your protection

  347. today,

  348. I need

  349. to hear

  350. your voice

  351. above all

  352. the other

  353. voices in

  354. my life

  355. today.

  356. Father God,

  357. help me.

  358. Faith is

  359. humble and

  360. dependent all

  361. the time.

  362. And also,

  363. before we

  364. move on,

  365. leprosy

  366. is helpful

  367. in providing

  368. a picture

  369. of our

  370. greatest

  371. need.

  372. If we

  373. want to

  374. learn

  375. lessons,

  376. one lesson

  377. that this

  378. man can

  379. teach is

  380. our

  381. great

  382. need.

  383. So the

  384. Bible is

  385. really clear

  386. about the

  387. reality of

  388. sin,

  389. our

  390. disobedience

  391. against God

  392. and against

  393. his word,

  394. our rejection

  395. of his

  396. rule in

  397. our life,

  398. our failure

  399. to love

  400. God and

  401. to love

  402. others as

  403. we should

  404. so that

  405. we are

  406. by nature

  407. without

  408. Jesus

  409. spiritually

  410. dead

  411. even

  412. while

  413. we

  414. live.

  415. We find

  416. ourselves

  417. separated

  418. because of

  419. sin from

  420. life with

  421. God,

  422. that's how

  423. we were

  424. made,

  425. and we

  426. are facing

  427. his

  428. judgment

  429. and the

  430. certain

  431. reality

  432. of eternal

  433. separation

  434. from God

  435. and all

  436. that is

  437. good.

  438. Our

  439. condition

  440. is

  441. serious.

  442. And just

  443. as it was

  444. with leprosy,

  445. so with us

  446. it will take

  447. a miracle

  448. to cure

  449. us by

  450. ourselves.

  451. We cannot

  452. change that

  453. condition.

  454. And that's

  455. where the

  456. Bible offers

  457. such good

  458. news to

  459. us,

  460. because it

  461. presents to

  462. us this

  463. miracle of

  464. God's

  465. saving

  466. grace.

  467. And we

  468. see that

  469. at the

  470. cross of

  471. Jesus,

  472. where Jesus

  473. will give

  474. his own

  475. life,

  476. he will

  477. die so

  478. that we

  479. might live.

  480. He will

  481. take on

  482. himself our

  483. sin and

  484. its punishment

  485. so that we

  486. might be

  487. forgiven.

  488. He will

  489. face being

  490. abandoned so

  491. we can be

  492. adopted into

  493. the family

  494. of God,

  495. restored to

  496. the life

  497. that we

  498. were made

  499. for.

  500. So there

  501. is good

  502. news even

  503. as we

  504. see the

  505. bad news

  506. of our

  507. own

  508. condition.

  509. So having

  510. looked at

  511. the faith

  512. of the

  513. leper,

  514. it's important

  515. that we

  516. look at

  517. the deep

  518. restoration

  519. of Jesus.

  520. There are

  521. two highly

  522. significant

  523. details for

  524. the leper

  525. and for

  526. us to

  527. take out

  528. of this

  529. short

  530. reading.

  531. The first

  532. is the

  533. touch of

  534. Jesus.

  535. Verse

  536. three,

  537. Jesus

  538. reached out

  539. his hand

  540. and touched

  541. the man.

  542. I am

  543. willing,

  544. he said,

  545. be clean.

  546. Immediately he

  547. was cleansed

  548. of his

  549. leprosy.

  550. some of

  551. you I

  552. know are

  553. finding as

  554. the days

  555. and weeks

  556. go by that

  557. this is a

  558. time of

  559. real hardship

  560. because you

  561. feel starved

  562. of company

  563. and maybe

  564. especially

  565. starved

  566. of

  567. contact.

  568. We have

  569. in our own

  570. personal experience

  571. stories and

  572. we know

  573. from news

  574. reports stories

  575. of babies

  576. being born

  577. and families

  578. who cannot

  579. visit,

  580. loved ones

  581. being buried

  582. and friends

  583. and family

  584. members that

  585. can't gather.

  586. Friendships

  587. are being

  588. missed.

  589. Important

  590. events

  591. are being

  592. cancelled

  593. because we

  594. cannot be

  595. close together

  596. and sometimes

  597. that two

  598. metre

  599. separation

  600. can feel

  601. like a

  602. Grand

  603. Canyon,

  604. can't it?

  605. I wonder

  606. how long

  607. had this

  608. man been

  609. facing the

  610. reality

  611. of no

  612. contact

  613. and

  614. total

  615. isolation.

  616. Imagine

  617. his

  618. unending

  619. loneliness.

  620. We have

  621. hope that

  622. it will

  623. return.

  624. This man

  625. had no

  626. hope

  627. outside of

  628. a miracle.

  629. So in

  630. Jesus'

  631. touch

  632. there is

  633. mercy

  634. compassion,

  635. there is

  636. love

  637. and there

  638. is welcome.

  639. There is

  640. so much

  641. going on

  642. here

  643. and it

  644. reminds us

  645. that we

  646. are made

  647. for relationship

  648. and Jesus

  649. our creator

  650. knows that

  651. and he

  652. lovingly

  653. brings

  654. restoration.

  655. relationship

  656. with God.

  657. And what

  658. has Jesus

  659. come to

  660. bring?

  661. Jesus

  662. brings to

  663. this man's

  664. life the

  665. very presence

  666. of God

  667. because he

  668. is the

  669. son of

  670. God and

  671. he brings

  672. the touch

  673. of God,

  674. the healing

  675. touch of

  676. God into

  677. this man's

  678. life.

  679. And let

  680. me say

  681. that Jesus

  682. wants to do

  683. that for

  684. you too.

  685. Jesus

  686. doesn't

  687. change.

  688. He is

  689. still

  690. willing to

  691. respond to

  692. our need

  693. if we

  694. come to

  695. him in

  696. faith.

  697. And so

  698. we are

  699. invited to

  700. ask him

  701. for the

  702. help that

  703. he is

  704. willing to

  705. provide.

  706. The second

  707. thing to

  708. notice about

  709. the deep

  710. restoration of

  711. Jesus is

  712. perhaps the

  713. surprising detail

  714. of verse

  715. four.

  716. when Jesus

  717. said to

  718. the man

  719. see that

  720. you don't

  721. tell anyone

  722. but go

  723. show yourself

  724. to the

  725. priest and

  726. offer the

  727. gift Moses

  728. commanded as

  729. a testimony

  730. to them.

  731. So what's

  732. this about?

  733. You see

  734. Jesus could

  735. have sent

  736. the man on

  737. his way

  738. as it were

  739. saying well

  740. go and

  741. enjoy your

  742. family.

  743. That's a

  744. wonderful thing.

  745. Be part of

  746. the community

  747. is a great

  748. thing.

  749. Perhaps

  750. find a

  751. job.

  752. But Jesus

  753. knows that

  754. is not

  755. enough for

  756. true restoration

  757. because still

  758. when his

  759. body is

  760. healed still

  761. there will

  762. be

  763. discontent

  764. still there

  765. would be

  766. disappointment

  767. and ultimately

  768. death would

  769. come.

  770. So verse

  771. four is

  772. showing us

  773. that Jesus

  774. wants the

  775. man's

  776. restoration

  777. to be

  778. deeper.

  779. How do

  780. we see

  781. that?

  782. Because his

  783. first priority

  784. is that the

  785. man go to

  786. the temple.

  787. The man

  788. offer a

  789. sacrifice to

  790. God.

  791. So here's

  792. what's

  793. happening.

  794. The

  795. miracle

  796. that Jesus

  797. works of

  798. healing the

  799. man makes

  800. praise and

  801. worship

  802. possible.

  803. In

  804. stretching out

  805. his hands

  806. to heal

  807. the leper

  808. he is

  809. restoring the

  810. man to

  811. his place

  812. among the

  813. people of

  814. God.

  815. Now he

  816. can worship

  817. again.

  818. And that's

  819. the greatest

  820. restoration that

  821. Jesus can

  822. bring.

  823. As we

  824. bring this

  825. to a

  826. conclusion

  827. let's

  828. think about

  829. us

  830. receiving

  831. this

  832. deep

  833. restoration

  834. of

  835. Jesus.

  836. It's

  837. tempting I

  838. think to

  839. seek God

  840. in a

  841. crisis

  842. for some

  843. kind of

  844. boost

  845. to see

  846. us through

  847. and then

  848. we'll go

  849. back to

  850. the way

  851. things were.

  852. But this

  853. little story

  854. here reminds

  855. us that

  856. God,

  857. that Jesus

  858. wants to

  859. go deeper.

  860. He would

  861. change your

  862. heart and

  863. change your

  864. desires,

  865. not just in

  866. the short

  867. term,

  868. but for

  869. the long

  870. term and

  871. for all

  872. eternity.

  873. He wants

  874. to bring

  875. a deeper

  876. healing,

  877. maybe to

  878. one that

  879. you didn't

  880. even realise

  881. that you

  882. needed.

  883. Maybe to

  884. help illustrate

  885. this,

  886. I was

  887. thinking about

  888. last winter.

  889. So I

  890. have had

  891. asthma

  892. since

  893. childhood

  894. and last

  895. winter,

  896. I got a

  897. fairly

  898. significant

  899. chest

  900. infection

  901. and after

  902. a few

  903. days

  904. I dragged

  905. myself to

  906. the local

  907. GP,

  908. effectively

  909. because I

  910. wanted relief

  911. to be able

  912. to breathe,

  913. to be able

  914. to sleep,

  915. all those

  916. kind of

  917. things.

  918. Well the

  919. nurse and

  920. the GP

  921. took one

  922. look at

  923. me and

  924. they said

  925. yeah we

  926. can do

  927. that but

  928. we want

  929. to go

  930. deeper.

  931. So I

  932. got my

  933. antibiotics

  934. and some

  935. time off

  936. work but

  937. also over

  938. the course

  939. of a couple

  940. of weeks

  941. they did

  942. some really

  943. helpful things.

  944. They gave me

  945. new insight

  946. that I never

  947. had really

  948. about the

  949. damage that

  950. asthma

  951. untreated

  952. can do to

  953. your heart

  954. and to your

  955. lungs.

  956. They gave me

  957. a new

  958. inhaler and

  959. gave me even

  960. a new

  961. technique for

  962. taking my

  963. inhaler.

  964. I wanted

  965. just a bit

  966. of short

  967. term relief

  968. but six

  969. months on

  970. I am so

  971. thankful,

  972. so thankful

  973. they wanted

  974. to go

  975. deeper.

  976. My quality

  977. of life

  978. has been

  979. enhanced

  980. no end.

  981. You might

  982. want

  983. short term

  984. comfort

  985. but Jesus

  986. would want

  987. you to

  988. go,

  989. would want

  990. to go

  991. deeper

  992. in your

  993. life.

  994. Jesus

  995. knows

  996. your

  997. greatest

  998. need

  999. and mine

  1000. love

  1001. and

  1002. God

  1003. is

  1004. going to

  1005. end

  1006. our

  1007. isolation

  1008. from

  1009. God.

  1010. That

  1011. Jesus

  1012. would

  1013. deal

  1014. with

  1015. the

  1016. sin

  1017. that

  1018. creates

  1019. a

  1020. barrier

  1021. between

  1022. us

  1023. as sinful

  1024. people

  1025. and a

  1026. perfectly

  1027. holy

  1028. God.

  1029. We were

  1030. made to

  1031. know

  1032. God

  1033. and his

  1034. love

  1035. and his

  1036. joy

  1037. but sin

  1038. is a

  1039. barrier

  1040. that isolates

  1041. Jesus

  1042. wants to

  1043. deal

  1044. with that.

  1045. That's why

  1046. he went

  1047. to the

  1048. cross

  1049. and he

  1050. calls us

  1051. to

  1052. faith

  1053. so that

  1054. barrier

  1055. would be

  1056. removed.

  1057. And also

  1058. Jesus

  1059. knows

  1060. where you

  1061. will find

  1062. deepest

  1063. joy.

  1064. Deepest

  1065. joy

  1066. is found

  1067. in

  1068. enjoying

  1069. the

  1070. glorious

  1071. love

  1072. and

  1073. life

  1074. of

  1075. our

  1076. eternal

  1077. God.

  1078. Jesus

  1079. knows

  1080. that the

  1081. love

  1082. and the

  1083. joy

  1084. that we

  1085. are

  1086. looking

  1087. for

  1088. ultimately

  1089. can

  1090. only

  1091. be

  1092. found

  1093. in

  1094. him.

  1095. Nothing

  1096. else

  1097. lasts.

  1098. Nothing

  1099. else

  1100. compares.

  1101. So

  1102. this

  1103. Jesus

  1104. who

  1105. stretched

  1106. out

  1107. his

  1108. hand

  1109. to

  1110. restore

  1111. a

  1112. leper

  1113. to

  1114. community

  1115. and

  1116. community

  1117. with

  1118. God

  1119. would

  1120. stretch

  1121. out

  1122. those

  1123. hands

  1124. again

  1125. at

  1126. the

  1127. cross

  1128. so

  1129. that

  1130. you

  1131. and I

  1132. by

  1133. trusting

  1134. in

  1135. Jesus

  1136. we

  1137. could

  1138. be

  1139. forgiven

  1140. we

  1141. could

  1142. be

  1143. made

  1144. clean

  1145. we

  1146. could

  1147. be

  1148. given

  1149. new

  1150. life.

  1151. This

  1152. story

  1153. teaches

  1154. us

  1155. that

  1156. it

  1157. takes

  1158. a

  1159. touch

  1160. of

  1161. Jesus

  1162. great

  1163. love

  1164. to

  1165. produce

  1166. deep

  1167. restoration.

  1168. So

  1169. let me

  1170. encourage

  1171. you

  1172. whoever

  1173. you

  1174. are

  1175. don't

  1176. settle

  1177. for

  1178. less.

  1179. We're

  1180. all

  1181. searching

  1182. for a

  1183. love

  1184. and a

  1185. happiness

  1186. that is

  1187. real

  1188. and that

  1189. lasts

  1190. for a

  1191. hope

  1192. that we

  1193. can rely

  1194. on

  1195. for a

  1196. peace

  1197. that is

  1198. deep

  1199. and real.

  1200. can

  1201. I

  1202. tell

  1203. you

  1204. that

  1205. what

  1206. you're

  1207. looking

  1208. for

  1209. is

  1210. found

  1211. in

  1212. Jesus.

  1213. This

  1214. Jesus

  1215. who is

  1216. willing

  1217. and able

  1218. to heal

  1219. us

  1220. and to

  1221. restore

  1222. us.

  1223. This

  1224. Jesus

  1225. who went

  1226. to the

  1227. cross

  1228. to bring

  1229. you into

  1230. fellowship

  1231. with God.

  1232. So

  1233. come to

  1234. him in

  1235. your need

  1236. whatever

  1237. your need

  1238. is today.

  1239. Come

  1240. with

  1241. humble

  1242. dependent

  1243. faith

  1244. and

  1245. receive

  1246. his

  1247. great

  1248. love.
