  1. Well, good evening and welcome once again to our short church service.

  2. Let me begin with words that we find in 1 Peter chapter 1.

    1 Peter 1 chapter mention

  3. Words that speak hope to suffering Christians, reminding them, reminding us, of the true identity that is ours in Christ.

  4. So listen to how the letter begins, verse 1 and 2.

  5. Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to God's elect, exiles, who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father,

  6. through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to be obedient to Jesus Christ and sprinkled with his blood.

  7. And then in chapter 2, he says of this suffering, struggling church,

  8. you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession,

  9. that you may declare the praises of him who called you of darkness into his wonderful light.

  10. Now, we're going to read together in our Bibles from 1 Thessalonians chapter 4.

    1 Thessalonians 4 chapter mention

  11. Again, it would be helpful to have a Bible in front of you, but the words should also be on the screen so that you can follow along.

  12. We're thinking again about the Holy Spirit in the believer's life.

  13. And here we're thinking about the Holy Spirit and his work in sanctifying.

  14. And we'll think about that in a moment.

  15. So 1 Thessalonians chapter 4.

    1 Thessalonians 4 chapter mention

  16. Let's hear God's word together.

  17. As for other matters, brothers and sisters, we instructed you how to live in order to please God as in fact you are living.

  18. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more.

  19. For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.

  20. It is God's will that you should be sanctified, that you should avoid sexual immorality,

  21. that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honourable,

  22. not in passionate lust like the pagans who do not know God,

  23. and that in this matter no one should wrong or take advantage of a brother or sister.

  24. The Lord will punish all those who commit such sins as we told you and warned you before.

  25. For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.

  26. Therefore, anyone who rejects this instruction does not reject a human being,

  27. but God, the very God who gives you his Holy Spirit.

  28. Now about your love for one another, we do not need to write to you,

  29. for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other.

  30. And in fact, you do love all of God's family throughout Macedonia.

  31. Yet we urge you, brothers and sisters, to do so more and more,

  32. and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life.

  33. You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you,

  34. so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders,

  35. and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.

  36. Goals matter for motivation, don't they?

  37. If you're listening and you're a student or a pupil,

  38. you will know that it's really hard to be motivated without the push of final exams.

  39. It's really hard to do your best without a teacher who's checking over your work,

  40. if you're in homeschool.

  41. And we see it in the life of athletes as well.

  42. They are on those gruelling schedules.

  43. They make sacrifices and they push their bodies through the pain barrier

  44. for the sake of glory and championships.

  45. And it's really hard for them to keep motivated when there is no sport happening.

  46. As a Christian, if you are a Christian,

  47. I wonder if you know what is the goal of your life.

  48. What is God's goal for your life?

  49. There's a wonderful little phrase in verse 3 here.

  50. God's will for you and me is that you should be sanctified.

  51. What does God want for us?

  52. Sanctification.

  53. So what is that?

  54. And what does it have to do with the Holy Spirit

  55. who we've been thinking about for the last few weeks?

  56. Well, sanctification is one aspect of God's grace to us in Jesus Christ.

  57. It is part of his ongoing work by the Holy Spirit

  58. so that more and more we are living free of sin

  59. and we are becoming more and more like Jesus.

  60. That's a progressive work of Christian maturity,

  61. of growing in holiness.

  62. So unlike justification, which is 100% God's work,

  63. God declares a believer to be in right standing with him,

  64. righteous in his sight because of the finished work of Jesus

  65. and because of God's grace that applies justification.

  66. So we're justified in Christ and that's all God's work

  67. and we receive that freely as a gift.

  68. The sanctification is 100% the work of the Spirit in a believer's life

  69. and 100% the work of a believer working out our salvation.

  70. So this is an area where we are involved in work.

  71. So the Christian life, and the Bible is really clear about this,

  72. the Christian life is about fighting and striving.

  73. So the Holy Spirit is guiding us towards God's goal, holiness,

  74. sanctification, becoming more like Jesus.

  75. But we have to fight, we have to strive, we have to work,

  76. to obey, to kill sin, to believe the truth.

  77. Jenny Bridges, who's written a very helpful book called

  78. The Pursuit of Holiness,

  79. it says that God has made it possible for us to walk in holiness,

  80. but he has given us the responsibility of doing the walking.

  81. So we are to aim for holiness,

  82. but we do that fuelled by faith in Jesus.

  83. We pursue godliness,

  84. but we do that empowered by the Spirit.

  85. So we work as God's Spirit works in us.

  86. So let's use 1 Thessalonians 4 to begin to see how this works.

  87. So first of all,

  88. the Holy Spirit guides us in holiness.

  89. You look at the first couple of verses here.

  90. What is Paul saying to these new Christians?

  91. He says,

  92. So you are pleasing God.

  93. Now we ask you and urge you to do this more and more.

  94. So you are pleasing.

  95. Go on and do it more and more.

  96. Your ethics,

  97. your moral behaviour,

  98. is obedient and pleasing to God.

  99. Now keep on

  100. that path

  101. of obedience.

  102. So remember,

  103. God wants us

  104. to be sanctified,

  105. to be holy,

  106. to becoming more like Jesus.

  107. And the Spirit's work is to guide

  108. a person to know what that looks like.

  109. So this sanctification is an active and ongoing process

  110. of being taught and given power

  111. to know how on the one hand

  112. to love God

  113. and also to love our neighbour.

  114. Now that's holiness

  115. is doing the will of God.

  116. It's about loving God,

  117. loving neighbour.

  118. So here,

  119. what does that look like

  120. for the Thessalonians?

  121. Well,

  122. they're given really practical instructions.

  123. In verses 4 to 8,

  124. Paul talks to this group of young Christians

  125. about sexual ethics,

  126. calling them away

  127. from the sexual immorality

  128. that they were used to

  129. in their former pagan lifestyle.

  130. In verses 9 and 10,

  131. he encourages them

  132. to go on

  133. and to grow

  134. in their love

  135. for believers.

  136. In verse 11,

  137. it looks like

  138. avoiding

  139. controversy

  140. and

  141. gossip.

  142. In verse 11 and 12,

  143. it also looks like

  144. working hard

  145. and working

  146. well.

  147. So there is guidance

  148. in all these practical areas

  149. of holiness.

  150. God says,

  151. be holy

  152. because I

  153. am holy.

  154. All sin

  155. is

  156. unholy.

  157. It is a contradiction

  158. of

  159. God's holiness.

  160. Therefore,

  161. we are to be

  162. fighting against it.

  163. There should be

  164. in a Christian

  165. an inner conflict

  166. where we want

  167. to kill sins

  168. so that we can do

  169. the will of God.

  170. So when you look

  171. at the language

  172. Paul uses

  173. in verse 1,

  174. he urges them

  175. to keep on living

  176. to please God.

  177. In verse 7,

  178. he says,

  179. God calls you

  180. to live

  181. a holy life.

  182. Here is your way

  183. of life.

  184. Here is your work.

  185. Here is your hard work.

  186. There is no room

  187. for laziness

  188. as the Holy Spirit

  189. guides us

  190. to holiness

  191. and obedience.

  192. Now before we go

  193. any further,

  194. there are two,

  195. as it were,

  196. ditches to avoid.

  197. If holiness

  198. is a path

  199. that we are to take,

  200. there are two ways

  201. that we can fall

  202. off the path.

  203. The one side

  204. is legalism

  205. where we get

  206. the idea

  207. that we are

  208. to obey

  209. in our strength

  210. or we are

  211. to obey

  212. to earn

  213. the favour

  214. of God.

  215. and that

  216. will end

  217. in defeat

  218. and failure.

  219. So that's one

  220. ditch to avoid

  221. on the path

  222. of holiness.

  223. The other ditch

  224. is the mindset

  225. that says,

  226. well,

  227. we simply

  228. let go

  229. and let God.

  230. The idea

  231. that obedience

  232. comes to us

  233. as some kind

  234. of automatic

  235. upgrade

  236. where a person

  237. becomes a follower

  238. of Jesus

  239. and then we always

  240. make good and wise

  241. decisions

  242. and we always

  243. love well.

  244. No,

  245. the Bible says

  246. we need to work

  247. out our obedience.

  248. We need to work

  249. hard at holiness

  250. but we do that

  251. not in our own strength.

  252. We do that guided

  253. and empowered

  254. by God's Holy Spirit.

  255. So thinking about

  256. the Holy Spirit

  257. who guides us

  258. in holiness,

  259. how do we know

  260. what holy living

  261. looks like?

  262. How do we know

  263. what holy living

  264. sounds like?

  265. It takes us

  266. to our second point

  267. that the Holy Spirit

  268. guides us

  269. in the truth,

  270. guides us

  271. into

  272. the Bible,

  273. the truth

  274. of God's word.

  275. We've already

  276. seen that.

  277. All through

  278. the Old Testament

  279. and the New Testament

  280. we find

  281. the law,

  282. we find ethics,

  283. we find a way

  284. of life

  285. being presented

  286. to the Christian

  287. and again

  288. this is not our way

  289. to earn God's favour,

  290. we're saved by grace

  291. not by law

  292. but law

  293. and ethics

  294. they do give us

  295. a guide to what

  296. pleases God.

  297. They do show us

  298. what the way

  299. of holiness

  300. looks like.

  301. Look at verse

  302. 2 again.

  303. Paul says

  304. something striking

  305. here,

  306. verse 2,

  307. for you know

  308. what instructions

  309. we gave you

  310. by the authority

  311. of the Lord Jesus.

  312. So Paul is saying

  313. that the ethical

  314. and moral teaching

  315. this very practical

  316. instruction,

  317. it has the same

  318. divine authority

  319. as his gospel

  320. message.

  321. They both come

  322. with the authority

  323. of Jesus.

  324. We need both

  325. as Christians.

  326. Look at verse 7

  327. and 8.

  328. Again,

  329. very striking.

  330. God did not call us

  331. to be impure

  332. but to live a holy life.

  333. Therefore,

  334. anyone who rejects

  335. this instruction

  336. does not reject

  337. a human being

  338. but God,

  339. the very God

  340. who gives you

  341. his Holy Spirit.

  342. So to reject

  343. the clear moral

  344. instruction

  345. that we find

  346. in the Bible

  347. here delivered by Paul

  348. is to choose

  349. impurity rather than

  350. holiness

  351. is to reject

  352. God.

  353. Further,

  354. it is to reject

  355. God's Holy Spirit

  356. who both gives

  357. the instruction

  358. and empowers

  359. the way to obey.

  360. So hopefully

  361. what's become

  362. clear to us

  363. is that for us

  364. to be sanctified,

  365. for us to grow

  366. in our holiness,

  367. to grow

  368. into the image

  369. of Jesus,

  370. we need to know

  371. our Bibles

  372. and we need

  373. to obey

  374. our Bibles.

  375. One of the

  376. pictures that the

  377. Bible uses of itself

  378. and we find it

  379. in the Psalms

  380. and Jesus uses it

  381. is that God's Word

  382. is like a lamp,

  383. it's like a light

  384. and the Spirit

  385. is the one

  386. who inspired

  387. the Word of God

  388. so the Spirit

  389. uses the lamp

  390. of God's Word

  391. to illuminate

  392. certain realities

  393. for us.

  394. There's that

  395. illumination,

  396. brightening,

  397. lightening up

  398. that takes place

  399. in at least three ways.

  400. First of all,

  401. the Spirit uses

  402. the Word of God

  403. as a lamp

  404. to expose

  405. the darkness

  406. of sin

  407. in our hearts.

  408. Maybe one way

  409. we can think about it

  410. is this.

  411. Imagine cleaning

  412. your car

  413. in the half-light

  414. or as it's getting dark.

  415. You know when you

  416. put loads of water

  417. on it

  418. and you put a bit

  419. of soap on it,

  420. it always looks good,

  421. doesn't it?

  422. Always,

  423. until the water dries

  424. and until the sun shines

  425. and then,

  426. unless you know

  427. a really good job,

  428. you see the dirty

  429. marks in various places.

  430. We can think

  431. that we are

  432. doing really well

  433. when we're judging

  434. by our own standards

  435. or even judging

  436. by some of the things

  437. that we know

  438. in the Bible,

  439. but the Spirit

  440. always wants us

  441. to go deeper.

  442. It wants us

  443. to be reading

  444. the Bible

  445. and to be reflecting

  446. on it

  447. that it's exposing

  448. some of the darkness,

  449. some of the unbelief,

  450. some of the sin,

  451. the stain of sin

  452. in our own hearts

  453. and lives.

  454. So there's illumination

  455. to expose

  456. sin and stain.

  457. But there's also

  458. the Holy Spirit

  459. uses the Bible

  460. to illuminate

  461. and to reveal

  462. the beauty

  463. and truth

  464. of the Bible.

  465. So it's always helpful,

  466. it's so important

  467. for us to pray

  468. before we come

  469. to read the Bible,

  470. you know,

  471. open my eyes

  472. to see wonderful

  473. things in your word

  474. so that we wouldn't

  475. just read the Bible

  476. as any other book,

  477. that we wouldn't

  478. just read it

  479. as something

  480. so that we can,

  481. you know,

  482. tick it off

  483. our list

  484. so we can feel good.

  485. We want to be reading

  486. so that we see

  487. more of God's glory,

  488. more of the beauty

  489. of God's truth.

  490. And especially,

  491. the third thing

  492. to focus on,

  493. the Spirit uses

  494. the lamp

  495. of God's word

  496. to illuminate

  497. for us

  498. the glory

  499. of Jesus

  500. on every page.

  501. Think about

  502. a theatre

  503. and imagine

  504. that stage

  505. spotlight

  506. shining.

  507. Where does it

  508. shine?

  509. It always is

  510. shining so that

  511. we can see

  512. the star

  513. of the show.

  514. The Spirit

  515. wants to do

  516. that

  517. to help us

  518. to see

  519. Jesus.

  520. So we read

  521. the Bible

  522. so that we see

  523. Jesus as the

  524. true king,

  525. to see

  526. Jesus as

  527. the glory

  528. of God

  529. revealed to us,

  530. the true hero,

  531. the true champion,

  532. the true star.

  533. And the Spirit

  534. would have us

  535. to see

  536. Jesus

  537. and see the good news

  538. that we have

  539. in Jesus

  540. and see all the

  541. spiritual blessings

  542. that are ours

  543. in Christ

  544. so that

  545. we would become

  546. what we

  547. behold.

  548. That the more

  549. we enjoy

  550. and experience

  551. of the love

  552. and the goodness

  553. of Jesus,

  554. the more we'll be

  555. changed into

  556. his image.

  557. Now one very

  558. practical thing

  559. as we think

  560. about this truth

  561. that the Holy Spirit

  562. guides us

  563. in the truth

  564. that we find

  565. in the Bible,

  566. this means

  567. the Spirit

  568. will never

  569. guide you and I

  570. to act in an

  571. unbiblical way.

  572. That is basic.

  573. he will never

  574. contradict himself,

  575. he will never

  576. contradict the word.

  577. I've had

  578. pastoral meetings

  579. and discussions

  580. and maybe you've

  581. had them as well

  582. where somebody

  583. will sit down

  584. opposite me

  585. and say,

  586. well I prayed

  587. and I really feel

  588. at peace

  589. with this decision

  590. and that decision

  591. is something

  592. that's just

  593. thoroughly unbiblical

  594. or I feel

  595. that the Spirit

  596. is guiding me

  597. in this way

  598. but again

  599. it's not a way

  600. that's in line

  601. with the truth

  602. of the Bible.

  603. 1 John

  604. tells us

  605. to test

  606. the Spirit

  607. to recognise

  608. that just as

  609. there is the Spirit

  610. of God

  611. so also

  612. there are evil

  613. spirits

  614. and what do

  615. they want to do?

  616. They want to halt

  617. our progress

  618. in sanctification.

  619. They want to take

  620. us off course.

  621. They want to make

  622. us want to fall

  623. into ditches

  624. to not grow

  625. in the image

  626. of Jesus.

  627. So we don't

  628. trust our hunches,

  629. our feelings,

  630. our intuition.

  631. We want to trust

  632. the Holy Spirit

  633. to guide us

  634. into the Bible.

  635. He's always

  636. going to guide us

  637. towards sanctification,

  638. towards holiness

  639. and never towards sin.

  640. He's always

  641. going to guide us

  642. in line with

  643. biblical teaching.

  644. He's never going to

  645. reveal some new truth.

  646. So the Holy Spirit

  647. guides us

  648. in the truth

  649. of the Bible.

  650. Last thing

  651. and in many ways

  652. the most important

  653. thing

  654. to motivate us

  655. towards the goal

  656. of sanctification

  657. is this,

  658. the Holy Spirit

  659. guides us

  660. to live out

  661. our true identity.

  662. Now there is a question,

  663. well there are many

  664. questions I dread

  665. in a public setting

  666. but one that's

  667. particularly painful

  668. is this,

  669. when you get that

  670. open-ended,

  671. you're being introduced

  672. to a new group,

  673. it's like,

  674. tell us about yourself.

  675. That's just,

  676. what do you do

  677. with that one?

  678. But it's interesting

  679. to think about

  680. identity

  681. and how we choose

  682. to identify

  683. ourselves.

  684. Often,

  685. we identify

  686. in terms of

  687. place,

  688. I am from,

  689. sky,

  690. I live in

  691. Edinburgh,

  692. we identify

  693. ourselves

  694. in terms

  695. of people,

  696. our family

  697. relationships

  698. or maybe we tend

  699. to identify

  700. ourselves

  701. in terms

  702. of our position.

  703. Here is the work

  704. I do,

  705. here is the work

  706. I did,

  707. whether that's

  708. paid or unpaid.

  709. Now,

  710. for you and I

  711. to make progress

  712. towards God's goal

  713. for our life

  714. which is

  715. sanctification,

  716. the most important

  717. thing for us

  718. to understand

  719. is our true

  720. identity.

  721. identity.

  722. So much of

  723. Christian ethics

  724. and the Christian

  725. way of life

  726. is bound up

  727. with becoming

  728. who we truly

  729. are.

  730. Not who we are

  731. by nature

  732. but who we are

  733. by God's grace

  734. becoming who we

  735. truly are

  736. in Christ.

  737. Hundreds of times

  738. in Paul's

  739. letters he talks

  740. about being

  741. in Christ.

  742. It's crucial

  743. to see what is

  744. already true

  745. of us

  746. so that we

  747. would then

  748. live like

  749. it's true.

  750. So even here

  751. in verse 1

  752. we see it.

  753. We ask you

  754. and urge you

  755. in the Lord

  756. Jesus

  757. as those

  758. who are

  759. in Jesus

  760. continue to

  761. live

  762. to please

  763. God.

  764. What does

  765. the Bible

  766. tell us

  767. about our

  768. true identity

  769. as believers?

  770. who says

  771. things like

  772. in Christ

  773. you are

  774. dead to sin

  775. and you are

  776. alive in Christ.

  777. You have a new

  778. master,

  779. you have a new

  780. power.

  781. It says

  782. in Christ

  783. you are a new

  784. creation.

  785. God's

  786. power has

  787. worked in you

  788. so that now

  789. you might live

  790. for Christ

  791. and not

  792. live for yourself.

  793. in Christ

  794. you are not

  795. a child

  796. of disobedience.

  797. You are

  798. a child

  799. of God.

  800. In Christ

  801. you are

  802. holy,

  803. you are

  804. precious,

  805. you are a

  806. treasured

  807. possession.

  808. So live

  809. that way.

  810. In so

  811. many ways

  812. the New

  813. Testament

  814. reminds us

  815. of who

  816. we are

  817. and then

  818. it tells

  819. us

  820. in light

  821. of that

  822. identity,

  823. in light

  824. of all

  825. those

  826. spiritual

  827. blessings

  828. you enjoy

  829. because you

  830. are united

  831. to the

  832. Lord Jesus

  833. Christ,

  834. live as

  835. those who

  836. are in

  837. Christ.

  838. And that's

  839. what the

  840. Holy Spirit

  841. does.

  842. He guides

  843. us to see

  844. who we

  845. truly are.

  846. So we

  847. need

  848. the work

  849. of the

  850. Holy Spirit

  851. so that we

  852. might grow

  853. in holiness

  854. because he

  855. shows us

  856. what holiness

  857. looks like

  858. in God's

  859. word.

  860. He shows

  861. us the

  862. gospel

  863. so we

  864. see the

  865. pattern of

  866. true holiness,

  867. the beauty

  868. of Jesus

  869. and we

  870. see in the

  871. gospel who

  872. we truly

  873. are so

  874. that we

  875. might live

  876. that way.

  877. So remember

  878. the goal

  879. of God

  880. for your

  881. life.

  882. It is

  883. God's

  884. will

  885. that you

  886. should be

  887. sanctified.

  888. So remember

  889. we work

  890. hard at

  891. that but

  892. we work

  893. with the

  894. help of

  895. the Holy

  896. Spirit who

  897. helps us

  898. in that

  899. every step

  900. of the way.
