  1. Good morning. It's wonderful to be back with you again. We have had a fantastic week in Hong Kong.

  2. To everyone that we have met and has hosted us, thank you so much. It's been wonderful to be here.

  3. In a good Watermark tradition, let me introduce myself. If you're new here, my name is Kevin.

  4. I'm not one of the pastors. I'm a visitor from Cape Town. I've listened to lots of Chris's sermons,

  5. and he does that every week, right? And so it's good to be with you.

  6. I wonder if you can pray with me. I know we've prayed a bit this morning, but I feel like I would love some prayer.

  7. I'd love for us just to pray. Will you join me? I'm going to pray for 30 seconds.

  8. Heavenly Father, Christ the Son, Holy Spirit, we want to hear from you this morning.

  9. God, we don't need to hear from any individual. We don't need to hear the opinions of man.

  10. We want to hear from you and from your Word. God, why don't you take the words of your Scripture.

  11. Why don't you apply them to our lives? Why don't you help us to hear from you this morning?

  12. God, challenge us where we need to be challenged.

  13. Encourage us where we need to be encouraged.

  14. God, you know where we all are at in our different stages.

  15. Some of us are joyful, and some of us are mourning.

  16. Some of us are celebrating, and some of us are grieving.

  17. God, why don't you speak to us this morning, and come and have your way.

  18. In your name we pray. Amen. Amen.

  19. Now, as a church, you know that if you've been coming for a while, you are busy working through the book of Acts, which is fantastic.

  20. And last week and the week before, we looked at Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  21. And Acts chapter 2 is really the time when the Holy Spirit is poured out upon the church in power.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  22. And the church is baptized in the love and the power of the Holy Spirit.

  23. The church is empowered by the Holy Spirit for the ministry and the work to which God calls them.

  24. And Chris and I have argued over the last two weeks that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is not just for some people.

  25. It's not just for those that are extroverted or the young people.

  26. It's not just for the Pentecostals or the Charismatics or those that enjoy having a good time.

  27. And, you know, the rest are the chosen frozen.

  28. Do you know that phrase?

  29. Okay.

  30. The ministry of the Holy Spirit is what it means to be a follower of Jesus, to walk with God and to know God.

  31. And more than that, we see that if we go back to the beginning of the Bible,

  32. we see that actually to walk with God and know the presence and the love and the power of God

  33. is part of what it means to be human.

  34. And so the ministry of the Holy Spirit is so necessary and powerful and needed in the church.

  35. And without the person and the work of the Holy Spirit, the church is not the church.

  36. We're just a gathering of people that believe the same things.

  37. But it's the life and the power of the Holy Spirit that takes the wonderful truth of the gospel,

  38. the truth of Jesus, and actually makes it real in our lives and applies it to us.

  39. And so that was the beginning of Acts chapter 2 that we've looked at the last two weeks.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  40. Now, the scripture that Echo read to us is a wonderful scripture.

  41. And we're going to look at what happens when God the Holy Spirit is poured out in His church,

  42. when the gospel is preached, and when God is at work in His church.

  43. And let's just recap briefly the story in the Bible where we're at.

  44. Remember that for hundreds of years, God has been speaking to His people, promising to give them His presence.

  45. Through the prophets, through Joel and Jeremiah and Isaiah and Ezekiel,

  46. God's been saying that there will come a time when I will no longer,

  47. the words of God will not just be on the pages of your Bible, but they'll be written in your hearts.

  48. You will know what it means to walk with God and to love God and to trust God,

  49. because I will give you the Holy Spirit.

  50. So God's been promising this for centuries for His people.

  51. And then Jesus comes, and Jesus promises to pour out the Holy Spirit.

  52. And He says it like this.

  53. He says,

  54. If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.

  55. For whoever believes in Me, as the scriptures have said,

  56. out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.

  57. And then John adds,

  58. This He spoke about the Holy Spirit, who had not yet been given,

  59. because Jesus had not yet been glorified.

  60. And so then just a little bit later, in Acts chapter 1,

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  61. Jesus says to the disciples,

  62. Wait here in Jerusalem for the promised Holy Spirit,

  63. which my Father promised,

  64. and John baptized you with water,

  65. but I will baptize you in the Spirit.

  66. And then a few days later, this happens.

  67. Pentecost, Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  68. And the result of Pentecost is that the disciples are full of the Holy Spirit.

  69. They are joyful.

  70. They are celebrating.

  71. They are bold.

  72. And the people around them think that they're drunk.

  73. And so Peter stands up and explains what's going on.

  74. And he says,

  75. They're not drunk.

  76. They've encountered God.

  77. And the result is that Peter invariably preaches the gospel.

  78. And then look at what happens.

  79. Acts chapter 2, verse 36.

    Acts 2:36

  80. Peter says,

  81. Let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made him,

  82. both the Lord and Christ,

  83. this Jesus whom you crucified.

  84. It says,

  85. When they heard this, they were cut to the heart.

  86. They said to Peter and to the other apostles,

  87. Brothers, what shall we do?

  88. Peter said to them,

  89. Repent and be baptized,

  90. every one of you,

  91. in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ,

  92. for the forgiveness of your sins,

  93. and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  94. And those who received his word were baptized.

  95. And there were added that day about 3,000 souls to the church.

  96. And here's the question I want to ask us.

  97. What happens?

  98. What does it look like to a community of people

  99. when the Holy Spirit is poured out,

  100. when the gospel of Jesus is preached,

  101. and when God is at work in a city?

  102. What does that look like?

  103. What does that manifest as?

  104. Well, in some senses, a new community is born.

  105. On this day, straight after the Holy Spirit is poured out,

  106. the church is born.

  107. In fact, this is the first church gathering

  108. that Echo read to us about.

  109. And it's a very famous and well-known passage.

  110. And I know that Watermark really cherishes community.

  111. I'm sure this is a passage you've probably preached on

  112. many times over the years.

  113. But what this passage shows us

  114. is that when the Holy Spirit is poured out,

  115. when the gospel is preached,

  116. when God is at work,

  117. something unique happens.

  118. God births a new community is born.

  119. But it's a very unique community.

  120. It's different from just your colleagues at work

  121. or the community around your housing estate

  122. or your alumni at your university where you study.

  123. This is, when the church is working at its best,

  124. it's an exceptional community.

  125. But we need to be careful.

  126. We need to be careful that we don't just hold up Acts chapter 2

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  127. or print it out and distribute it in the bulletin

  128. and then say,

  129. there we go, Watermark,

  130. go and do likewise.

  131. In some ways,

  132. the Bible says that every verse in the Scripture

  133. is good for learning and for teaching,

  134. for us to learn from and for training.

  135. But Acts chapter 2 is not a church planting manual.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  136. The Holy Spirit didn't just say,

  137. let me give you a manual how to be the perfect church.

  138. There it is.

  139. Go and do it.

  140. Acts chapter 2 is not a prescription of the perfect church.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  141. It's a description of what happens

  142. when God is at work in people's lives.

  143. Do you see the difference?

  144. It's a historical description.

  145. The Holy Spirit is writing,

  146. or Luke is writing,

  147. and saying,

  148. this is what happened

  149. when God poured out His Spirit in people

  150. and when the people of God encountered God,

  151. the gospel is preached

  152. and God is at work in the world.

  153. This is a description of what happens

  154. when the beauty of Jesus is made known,

  155. when the cross of Jesus is preached

  156. and when the Holy Spirit is given.

  157. And what makes this community distinct?

  158. What differentiates them from,

  159. like we said,

  160. your colleagues or your housing estates

  161. or your sports friends

  162. or the guys you go running on the mountain with?

  163. What differentiates these people?

  164. Well, the key is found in verse 42.

  165. If you've got your Bible,

  166. look at it with me.

  167. Look what verse 42 says.

  168. It says,

  169. they devoted themselves

  170. to the apostles' teaching,

  171. to fellowship,

  172. to the breaking of bread,

  173. and to prayer.

  174. What makes this community so distinct,

  175. so unique,

  176. is that this church,

  177. in Acts chapter 2,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  178. and every true church,

  179. is made up of men and women

  180. who give themselves away.

  181. Who give themselves away.

  182. The ESV,

  183. which is the version we read,

  184. says they devoted themselves.

  185. And the word to devote,

  186. it actually comes from the same word,

  187. to consecrate yourself,

  188. to set yourself apart.

  189. But what it means is

  190. to continuously give of yourself

  191. to a purpose,

  192. to something else.

  193. In fact,

  194. in all the translation of the Bible,

  195. it says,

  196. in this verse,

  197. it says,

  198. they gave themselves,

  199. the apostles' teaching,

  200. to fellowship,

  201. to breaking of bread,

  202. and to prayer.

  203. They gave themselves.

  204. Just like in Acts chapter 6,

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  205. it says,

  206. the apostles were so busy,

  207. they didn't have time

  208. to give themselves

  209. to the ministry of word

  210. and to prayer.

  211. And so they appointed some deacons.

  212. They said,

  213. deacons,

  214. please come and help us

  215. and run the ministry

  216. so that we can give ourselves,

  217. we can devote ourselves

  218. to these things,

  219. to prayer and to preaching.

  220. They gave themselves

  221. to that which is important.

  222. They devoted themselves.

  223. And here we see

  224. that they gave of their property.

  225. They gave of their time.

  226. They gave of their resources.

  227. They gave of their wealth.

  228. They gave of their personal space.

  229. They invited people

  230. into their homes.

  231. Here is a group of people

  232. characterized by giving.

  233. I'm not exactly sure

  234. on all the ins and outs

  235. of Hong Kong culture,

  236. but in most major cities

  237. of the world,

  238. and this is certainly true

  239. in the West

  240. where we come from,

  241. but I suspect

  242. it's probably not that different

  243. here in Hong Kong.

  244. Most main cities

  245. of the world,

  246. there is the idea

  247. that the good life,

  248. what James K. Smith

  249. calls the good life,

  250. the life of contentment,

  251. the life of happiness,

  252. the life of joy,

  253. is found in consuming things,

  254. right?

  255. Consuming products,

  256. goods and services,

  257. consuming experiences,

  258. all found in the relationships

  259. around us.

  260. If we can just have more things,

  261. if we can have more space,

  262. if we can experience

  263. more wonderful things,

  264. if we can have

  265. the right relationships

  266. and the right connections,

  267. if we can know

  268. the right people,

  269. then our lives

  270. will be worthwhile.

  271. Then we'll really be happy.

  272. And when we're not happy,

  273. we are told that

  274. all we need to do

  275. is to find more things,

  276. to get another person

  277. in the house

  278. to help us,

  279. to get some more space,

  280. to buy another gadget

  281. or MacBook

  282. or car

  283. or something

  284. of that nature.

  285. As you think about

  286. the conversations

  287. in your workspace

  288. around the water cooler

  289. or around the lunch table,

  290. is that the understanding

  291. below the surface?

  292. that the road

  293. to more happiness

  294. and contentment

  295. is found

  296. in more things

  297. and more experiences

  298. or in knowing

  299. the right people.

  300. Is that true?

  301. Is that true in our lives?

  302. We've got a friend

  303. in Cape Town.

  304. Her name is Julie

  305. and she used to work

  306. in one of the big

  307. global advertising agencies.

  308. And she told us

  309. many years ago

  310. that one of the

  311. underlying principles

  312. in advertising,

  313. I really apologize

  314. if you're in advertising,

  315. but anyway.

  316. She told us

  317. one of the underlying

  318. principles in advertising

  319. is to rob somebody

  320. of their self-contentment

  321. and then sell it back

  322. to them

  323. in the form of a product.

  324. Does that make sense?

  325. So in other words,

  326. an advert's message

  327. might be,

  328. you know,

  329. you're not really

  330. going to be respected

  331. or you deserve

  332. to be respected more

  333. but you're never

  334. going to get the respect

  335. you truly deserve

  336. unless you drive

  337. the right car.

  338. Here's a BMW.

  339. Or you're never

  340. really going to be

  341. appreciated

  342. unless you look

  343. magnificent.

  344. Here's a diamond necklace.

  345. Or unless you experience

  346. the world

  347. and get to see

  348. and travel

  349. and experience

  350. different cultures,

  351. you're such a bore.

  352. You're never going to

  353. have an exciting life.

  354. You want a trip to Japan?

  355. Right?

  356. So advertising sometimes,

  357. not everyone,

  358. robs people of their

  359. self-worth,

  360. their self-contentment

  361. and sells it back

  362. in the form of a product.

  363. Friends,

  364. the reason why we

  365. often buy so much stuff

  366. and buy often more

  367. than we need

  368. is not because we

  369. fundamentally need

  370. these things.

  371. It's because we're

  372. looking for a version

  373. of the good life.

  374. We're looking for

  375. contentment.

  376. We're looking for

  377. satisfaction.

  378. We're looking for

  379. something to please us

  380. and to satisfy us.

  381. But friends,

  382. the narrative of the

  383. Christian life

  384. is very different.

  385. The narrative of

  386. the Christian life

  387. because the narrative

  388. of the gospel

  389. is that joy is found

  390. not in getting

  391. but in giving.

  392. The life that God

  393. has called us to

  394. is not found

  395. in consuming.

  396. It's in giving

  397. of ourselves.

  398. It's in devoting

  399. ourselves to the

  400. contentment and the

  401. joy of others.

  402. As we give of ourselves

  403. to others and try

  404. and secure their

  405. blessing and their

  406. joy and their

  407. happiness,

  408. in that place we

  409. find our own

  410. joy and contentment.

  411. And that's what we

  412. see in the book of Acts

  413. and nowhere more

  414. poignantly than Acts

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  415. chapter 2 as we've

  416. read today.

  417. That the very core

  418. of the first Christian

  419. community were these

  420. two fundamental truths.

  421. One, for God so loved

  422. the world that he gave.

  423. That he gave himself.

  424. And two, the joy and

  425. contentment and happiness

  426. that so many of us are

  427. looking for are found

  428. not in consuming but in

  429. giving.

  430. Here were a bunch of

  431. people that devoted

  432. themselves.

  433. They gave of themselves.

  434. They spent their lives

  435. giving to the people in

  436. the community around

  437. them.

  438. Friends, at the heart of

  439. the Christian gospels

  440. that because God so

  441. loved the world, broken

  442. and marred and sinful

  443. as it is, he did

  444. something about it.

  445. But he didn't send his

  446. driver.

  447. He didn't send an

  448. ambassador.

  449. What did he do?

  450. He sent himself.

  451. He gave himself.

  452. He gave his son, Jesus

  453. Christ, to die on the

  454. cross.

  455. To be smashed with

  456. nine inch nails through

  457. his hands.

  458. To be so bloody that

  459. you wouldn't even

  460. recognize him as a

  461. human body.

  462. He gave himself that

  463. you and I could find

  464. life.

  465. Jesus didn't just come

  466. as an obedient son.

  467. He did that as well.

  468. But he gave of

  469. himself.

  470. Jesus didn't just come

  471. because his father

  472. asked him to and as

  473. an obedient son you

  474. obey your father.

  475. Jesus gladly and

  476. willingly gave of

  477. himself.

  478. In Matthew 20, Jesus

  479. says, the son of man

  480. came not to be served

  481. but to serve and to

  482. give his life as a

  483. ransom for many.

  484. Galatians chapter 1,

    Galatians 1 chapter mention

  485. Paul writes, grace to

  486. you and peace from

  487. God our father and

  488. the Lord Jesus Christ

  489. who gave himself for

  490. our sins to deliver us

  491. from the present evil

  492. age.

  493. Galatians 2.20, I have

  494. been crucified with

  495. Christ.

  496. It's no longer I who

  497. live but Christ who

  498. lives in me.

  499. That's a wonderful

  500. verse, isn't it?

  501. Now why is that true?

  502. Why is it that I can be

  503. crucified to myself?

  504. Why is it that I can go

  505. into my work week

  506. tomorrow no longer

  507. looking after myself

  508. and no longer me in my

  509. life but Christ living in

  510. me?

  511. On what basis can I do

  512. that?

  513. He goes on to say, for

  514. the life that I now live

  515. in the flesh, I live by

  516. faith in the son of God

  517. who loved me and gave

  518. himself for me.

  519. Friends, at the heart of

  520. the gospel is a God who

  521. though he made everything

  522. and therefore he owns

  523. everything and everything

  524. belongs to him and

  525. everybody is accountable

  526. to him.

  527. This sovereign and

  528. majestic God to whom

  529. one day all creation

  530. will one day bow down,

  531. this God gave.

  532. For God so loved the

  533. world that he gave.

  534. Kelly Capik wrote an

  535. amazing book from where

  536. I got that phrase, for

  537. God so loved the world,

  538. for God so loved that he

  539. gave.

  540. And this is what he

  541. writes.

  542. He says, the God who

  543. created and perfected the

  544. world and whose world

  545. turned from him has brought

  546. restoration through giving.

  547. The Father loved the world

  548. and gave the Son.

  549. The Father and the Son

  550. gave the gift of the Holy

  551. Spirit into the hearts of

  552. humanity.

  553. In other words, the gospel

  554. is shaped by giving.

  555. God's generosity buys us

  556. out of bondage and brings

  557. us into the blessing of

  558. belonging to him.

  559. But the good news is not

  560. only that God made us to be

  561. recipients of his

  562. generosity, but also

  563. participants in the

  564. movement of his divine

  565. generosity.

  566. Isn't that amazing?

  567. God redeems the world by

  568. giving.

  569. God puts right the wrongs

  570. of the past, not by

  571. punishing, not by

  572. teaching, but by giving.

  573. But more than that, God

  574. doesn't just give and put

  575. right the wrongs of the

  576. past.

  577. See, the problem with our

  578. rebellion, the problem with

  579. our sin, the problem with

  580. the brokenness of the

  581. world, is that sin, it

  582. doesn't just cause problems

  583. in my life, though it does

  584. that.

  585. It leaves me separated from

  586. God.

  587. I'm existentially divorced from

  588. my Creator.

  589. The problem with sin is

  590. that it also causes a part

  591. of my soul and my makeup

  592. to die.

  593. It leaves us spiritually

  594. dead.

  595. That's why Ephesians

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  596. chapter 2 says, as for

  597. you, you are dead in your

  598. trespasses and sins.

  599. But it also says you are

  600. slaves to the enemy, slaves

  601. to the prince of the power

  602. of the world.

  603. And so sin does a couple

  604. of things.

  605. It leaves us spiritually

  606. dead.

  607. It makes us slaves to sin.

  608. And it mars our hearts.

  609. It disorders our loves.

  610. And so when Jesus brings us

  611. back from the grave, when

  612. Jesus died to rescue us and

  613. to save us, he didn't just

  614. forgive us of sins.

  615. He did that.

  616. But he makes dead people

  617. alive again.

  618. That's Ephesians 2.

  619. As for you, you're dead in

  620. your sins, but by the grace

  621. and the kindness of God, God

  622. has made those of you who are

  623. dead alive again.

  624. We are now alive in Christ

  625. Jesus.

  626. And so when Christ brings

  627. us back, he doesn't just go

  628. off that which is lost and

  629. make it found again.

  630. He goes off to dead people,

  631. makes them alive again.

  632. Now, friends, the problem

  633. with the worldview that says

  634. happiness and pleasure are

  635. found in consuming more

  636. things and in getting more

  637. things and experiencing more

  638. pleasures outside of God is

  639. that it always leads to death.

  640. It leads to the death of our

  641. relationships.

  642. It leads to the death of our

  643. marriages.

  644. It leads to the death of our

  645. families.

  646. Something inside of us and

  647. something around us always

  648. dies when we look to other

  649. things for our pleasure and our

  650. satisfaction.

  651. You know what it's like to be

  652. used by somebody?

  653. Someone uses you for their own

  654. career advancement or to gain

  655. some benefit?

  656. What happens to that

  657. relationship?

  658. It doesn't flourish.

  659. It dies, right?

  660. Because a life that is based on

  661. getting, a life that is based on

  662. consuming, a life that is based

  663. on using, consuming, it promises

  664. life, but it robs us of life.

  665. And in the end, it leaves us

  666. dead.

  667. But the countercultural,

  668. counterintuitive message of the

  669. gospel is that God gave and he

  670. brought back life.

  671. In him giving of his life, he gave

  672. us life.

  673. And friends, that's true for

  674. community life as well.

  675. As we give of ourselves to those

  676. around us, in that place, the

  677. community comes alive.

  678. In that place, we flourish.

  679. A few years ago, Harvard Medical

  680. School published a report in the

  681. Harvard Health Publication.

  682. And it was called this, money can

  683. buy you happiness, but only if you

  684. give it away.

  685. This is how the report starts off.

  686. Here's a finding that may be

  687. surprising.

  688. Spending money on others makes

  689. people happier than spending it on

  690. themselves.

  691. This was the conclusion of

  692. researchers at the University of

  693. British Columbia and Harvard

  694. Business School who conducted three

  695. studies to determine the relationship

  696. between spending habits and

  697. reported happiness.

  698. Friends, didn't Jesus say the same

  699. thing?

  700. Acts chapter 20, the apostle Paul

    Acts 20 chapter mention

  701. goes to a little village called

  702. Miletus, just below the city of

  703. Ephesus.

  704. And he calls the elders from the

  705. church in Ephesus to come down to

  706. Miletus where he is.

  707. He's at the harbor port.

  708. And they have a discussion.

  709. And Paul says to them, I'm getting

  710. on in age.

  711. I'm probably not going to see you

  712. again.

  713. I don't think I'm going to come to

  714. Ephesus again.

  715. And they are all distraught.

  716. This is their father in the faith,

  717. the guy that started the church.

  718. They love Paul.

  719. They're very upset.

  720. And they're all crying because he

  721. said, I'll never, you know,

  722. I'm probably not going to see you

  723. again.

  724. And then so Paul gives them these

  725. kind of final words.

  726. These are his last words.

  727. He says, now I commend you to God

  728. and to the word of his grace, which

  729. is able to build you up and give you

  730. an inheritance amongst those that

  731. are sanctified.

  732. Sounds like a good benediction,

  733. right?

  734. And then after that, he says, wait,

  735. wait, there's one more thing.

  736. Remember the words of Jesus, who

  737. said himself, it is more blessed to

  738. give than to receive.

  739. One of Paul's final words, he says,

  740. friends, I want you to live a life of

  741. giving, not consuming.

  742. I want you to devote yourself, to

  743. give of yourself for the well-being

  744. of those around you.

  745. Paul says the same thing in 1 Timothy.

  746. Timothy is a young pastor in Ephesus,

  747. and Paul writes to him.

  748. And in Timothy's church, there are a

  749. whole lot of very wealthy people.

  750. And Paul wants to help young Timothy

  751. know how to pastor and shepherd these

  752. wealthy people in his church.

  753. And so he writes to him and he says this.

  754. He says, Timothy, for those who are

  755. wealthy, encourage them not to put their

  756. hope in the uncertainty of riches,

  757. which is so unstable, can go up and down,

  758. but their hope in the faithfulness of God,

  759. who will look after them.

  760. And encourage them to be generous and to

  761. share, to be ready to share, and here's

  762. why.

  763. Why should they share?

  764. He says, because, encourage them to do so,

  765. so that they may take hold of that which

  766. is truly life.

  767. You hear that?

  768. Paul here says, I want you to experience

  769. life.

  770. I want you to flourish.

  771. I want you to maximize your joy and your

  772. satisfaction in life.

  773. So give it away.

  774. Okay.

  775. Here is a church.

  776. In Acts chapter 2, that we're committed

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  777. not to consuming, but to blessing.

  778. Not to taking, but to giving.

  779. To give themselves to the well-being of

  780. those around them.

  781. And friends, that's true of money, but it's

  782. true of every area of life.

  783. It's true with our time.

  784. It's true with our relationships.

  785. It's true with our resources.

  786. It's true with our networks and our

  787. connections.

  788. This lifestyle of a generosity is what has

  789. characterized the early church.

  790. And I think of just Henrico sharing around

  791. university ministry.

  792. And I loved what Henrico said around, we can

  793. think of this ministry strategically.

  794. Who are the up-and-coming leaders?

  795. Who are the people that are going to

  796. influence Hong Kong?

  797. Who are the people that are, you know,

  798. maybe we should really try to influence the

  799. business, the finance guys.

  800. The guys are going to do well and that will

  801. pay dividends back into church in years to

  802. come.

  803. And we can strategically think about this

  804. thing.

  805. But even you can do ministry from a consumer

  806. aspect.

  807. You can even think about church, about how do

  808. we maximize our church?

  809. How do we grow and grow trajectories?

  810. You can even think about ministry in that

  811. way.

  812. And I loved what Henrico said and said, hey,

  813. maybe this won't pay dividends.

  814. But here are people made in God's image that

  815. Jesus died for.

  816. And we're going to serve them.

  817. And we're going to love them.

  818. And we're going to give up our time for

  819. them.

  820. Now, let's look at Acts chapter 2 again.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  821. And let's see what is it that they devoted

  822. themselves to.

  823. Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  824. Verse 42, it says this.

  825. Firstly, they devoted themselves to the

  826. things of God.

  827. So they devoted themselves to the apostles'

  828. teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking

  829. of bread and to prayer.

  830. Notice four things that they gave themselves

  831. to.

  832. They gave themselves to the apostles'

  833. teaching, which means that they gave

  834. themselves to knowing and understanding

  835. God's ways and God's word.

  836. Psalm 19 is one of the most beautiful

  837. psalms.

  838. And Psalm 19 says this.

  839. The law of the Lord is perfect.

  840. It revives the soul.

  841. Anyone feel tired and exhausted?

  842. The word of God revives our souls.

  843. Then the psalm says, your word is more

  844. desired than gold, even the most precious

  845. gold.

  846. It's sweeter than honey and the drippings

  847. of the honeycomb.

  848. Moreover, by your word is your servant warned.

  849. In keeping them, there is great reward.

  850. Friends, the little I know about Hong Kong

  851. is that time is precious, right?

  852. Time is one of your most precious commodities.

  853. And time is finite.

  854. It comes to an end each day.

  855. You can't prolong it or buy any more of it.

  856. It is what it is.

  857. And I know that in Hong Kong, many of you

  858. work very long hours.

  859. Many of you have demanding jobs.

  860. Some of you have demanding bosses.

  861. Some of you may even be demanding bosses.

  862. But time is precious, right?

  863. And when there's a lot of pressure,

  864. something's got to go.

  865. You can't do everything that you always want to do

  866. in the amount of time that you have.

  867. Time is precious.

  868. Friends, can I ask you not to give up on God's word?

  869. This is one of those things that it's so easy

  870. to let slip when time is little,

  871. when you're under pressure.

  872. Friends, can I ask you not to give up on giving

  873. yourself to God's word?

  874. Your relationship with God and the state of your soul

  875. is too precious to let that slip by the side.

  876. I want to encourage you, don't cut back.

  877. Wake up early.

  878. Get into God's word.

  879. Devote yourself to the teachings of the saints

  880. and to God's word.

  881. Secondly, they gave themselves to godly fellowship

  882. and community.

  883. They gathered together for community lunches.

  884. CG wasn't just a program in the life of the church.

  885. This was a community that gave themselves to each other

  886. and they spent their time and their energy

  887. investing in one another.

  888. Opened up their homes and invited each other in.

  889. And the truth is that sometimes investing

  890. in community is costly.

  891. It does cost you.

  892. But it's so beautiful.

  893. It's so wonderful when community comes together.

  894. And in Jerusalem, notice that Jerusalem was a major city.

  895. It was a city where people were coming and going.

  896. People would come for trade.

  897. People would go back to the outlying villages.

  898. And it was probably a very transient city, right,

  899. in the context of the ancient world.

  900. Sounds familiar to Hong Kong, right?

  901. And I guess these people might have thought to themselves

  902. from time to time,

  903. I don't know if I'm really going to build friendships

  904. with that person.

  905. They're just going to be here for 18 months

  906. and then their company's going to transfer them back to,

  907. I don't know, some other town, Ephesus, right?

  908. JP Morgan's going to move them to Ephesus.

  909. I'm not going to build a friendship with them.

  910. Or should I really invest in this friendship?

  911. Who knows how long they're going to be here?

  912. Here's a community that opened up their homes

  913. and they gave themselves.

  914. They devoted themselves to one another.

  915. And then notice also the diversity of cultures.

  916. In Jerusalem, there was people,

  917. we told them earlier in Acts chapter 2,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  918. people from every region in the known world came together.

  919. And they didn't just give themselves

  920. to those that were like them.

  921. They didn't just give themselves

  922. to those that were the same socioeconomic class,

  923. those that had studied overseas

  924. or those that spoke the same language.

  925. Here was a diverse group of people

  926. that gave themselves to each other.

  927. Thirdly, they gave themselves the breaking of bread.

  928. And this is communion.

  929. And Chris led us so wonderfully in this this morning.

  930. And in the ancient world,

  931. when you had communion together,

  932. you didn't just have a tiny piece of bread.

  933. You had a whole meal together.

  934. It was a feast.

  935. And you'd bring your food together

  936. and have a long table.

  937. And everyone would take an hour or two

  938. around the table feasting together,

  939. celebrating relationships,

  940. celebrating the many becoming one,

  941. like Chris led us in this morning,

  942. but also celebrating what God had done in their midst.

  943. And they would sit down and celebrate,

  944. but right at the heart of the community

  945. was the gospel, the truth that Jesus had died

  946. on the cross for their sins.

  947. And then notice they gave themselves to prayer.

  948. They devoted themselves to prayer.

  949. Friends, I want to say that you don't become

  950. the person that God's called you to.

  951. You don't become the man or the woman

  952. that God's called you to without prayer.

  953. And Romans chapter 15 talks about laboring in prayer.

    Romans 15 chapter mention

  954. Any ladies here have been through labor?

  955. Any men watched your wives going through labor?

  956. I've watched my wife go through it twice.

  957. And I remember Claire saying at the end,

  958. that was the most difficult thing she's ever gone through.

  959. And yet, what is the result of labor?

  960. It's life.

  961. It's new life.

  962. And Paul here talks about laboring in prayer.

  963. Friends, sometimes prayer can feel like that.

  964. It's hard work.

  965. It's a discipline that we give ourselves to.

  966. And yet, by laboring in prayer,

  967. we see the power of God at work.

  968. And notice what they prayed for.

  969. The church in the book of Acts believed two things.

  970. One, they believed in the power of prayer.

  971. They saw the power of prayer.

  972. They prayed for Peter to be released in jail,

  973. and he was released.

  974. They prayed for people to encounter God

  975. and the power of the Holy Spirit, and they did.

  976. They prayed for miracles, and they saw them.

  977. They prayed for boldness, and they experienced it.

  978. They prayed for deliverance from attack and oppression,

  979. and God delivered them.

  980. These people really believed in the power of prayer,

  981. and so they gave themselves to prayer.

  982. But then also, they believed that prayer doesn't just change God's heart.

  983. It changes our hearts.

  984. And so in Acts chapter 6, it says the apostles gave themselves to prayer

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  985. because they knew that the power of God was in that.

  986. And they knew that they needed a change.

  987. God didn't need a change.

  988. And so they gave themselves to prayer.

  989. And then two last things we see.

  990. Remember, notice how they gave themselves to one another,

  991. and we spoke about that.

  992. They gave themselves to each home.

  993. They sold their possessions.

  994. They sold their resources.

  995. They gave to those who had need.

  996. They gave to anyone in the community.

  997. And in many ways, they knew that being part of church

  998. meant being part of a family, being part of a community.

  999. It's one of the most beautiful things that we've experienced about Watermark.

1000. Watermark is such a community church.

1001. And it's easy to put a label on the side, right?

  1002. Watermark Community Church.

1003. It's easy to put up a banner and say, we believe in community.

1004. It's another thing to live it.

1005. And I think Watermark lives it so beautifully.

1006. And then finally, they gave themselves to mission.

1007. And it's not immediately clear from this chapter,

1008. but in the preceding chapter, we see how the Holy Spirit is poured out.

1009. And what does Peter do?

1010. He stands up and he tells everyone about Jesus.

1011. We spoke about this last week, right?

1012. He tells them about the wonder of Jesus.

1013. He tells them about the sin and the cross and how God died for us.

1014. And he makes much of the wonder of Jesus.

1015. And then Acts chapter 2, it says,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

1016. this new body of people found in Jesus come together.

1017. They devote themselves to prayer and the sacraments and God's word and community.

1018. And then it says, the Lord added to their number,

1019. day by day, those who were being saved.

1020. And in the next chapter, chapter 3,

1021. Peter and John are on the way to the temple.

1022. People, and they see a man begging for money.

1023. And they don't say to him,

1024. sorry, I don't have any money on me today.

  1025. What do they do?

1026. They tell them about the wonder of Jesus.

1027. And they pray for him.

1028. And that man comes to faith.

1029. And other people see this man, life change, and they come to faith.

1030. And friends, here was a community that hadn't just accepted Jesus.

1031. They hadn't just converted from one religion to another.

1032. They hadn't just become church people.

  1033. They devoted themselves.

  1034. They spent themselves.

1035. They gave themselves to the Lord, to the church, and to the city,

1036. to help the city find and follow Jesus.

1037. William Temple was the Archbishop of Canterbury many years ago,

1038. and he famously said this,

1039. the church is the only organization which exists not for itself,

1040. but for those who live outside of it.

1041. Now, that's maybe not the only reason why the church exists,

  1042. but it is true.

1043. The reason the church exists is to join God in the renewal of all things.

1044. The reason the church exists is to join God in the rescuing and redeeming of this planet

1045. and restore all that's gone wrong.

1046. To join God in making everything horrible and painful in the world untrue.

1047. And by bringing the hope of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit

1048. and the love of God to our city and our world.

1049. Friends, I don't know all the ins and outs of Hong Kong.

1050. I don't know all the cultural dynamics that's going on.

1051. But what I do know is this.

1052. In every city of the world, in every corner of the globe,

1053. the wealthy and the not so wealthy,

1054. the educated and the not so educated,

1055. male and female, every one of us are longing for the maker that made us.

1056. Every one of us are longing for a sense of transcendence.

1057. Every one of us are longing for the balm that our souls need.

1058. We long to feast in the living waters of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit.

1059. And this city is full of people that don't know God.

1060. And here was a church that devoted themselves.

1061. They gave themselves to Christ, to each other,

1062. and to the city in which they lived.

1063. Inviting those that had never encountered the life of God

1064. to experience Him for the first time.

1065. Friends, we have the hope of the world.

1066. We have the healing balm that every heart longs for.

1067. We have the golden treasure that every heart seeks.

1068. And His name is Jesus.

1069. Can we be a church that gives ourselves,

1070. that devotes ourselves to Christ,

  1071. to His Word,

  1072. to each other,

1073. and to the cities in which we live?

  1074. Let's pray together.

1075. We're going to pray in a minute,

1076. but just as I was preparing for today,

1077. a couple of groups of people I thought about.

1078. Maybe those of us who have been giving.

1079. You've been giving and giving and giving.

  1080. You've been serving, serving,

  1081. and you're exhausted.

1082. I feel like God just wants to empower you

  1083. and refresh you.

1084. Maybe you so understood this,

1085. that being a follower of Jesus is not about consuming.

  1086. It's about giving.

  1087. It's about being a blessing.

1088. And maybe you're exhausted from all the serving.

1089. God wants to refresh you.

1090. He wants you to sit at His feet,

  1091. like Mary,

  1092. not like Martha.

1093. He wants you to sit at His feet.

  1094. Martha said,

  1095. Jesus,

1096. tell my sister to come work with me.

  1097. And Jesus said,

1098. she has chosen the better thing.

  1099. One thing is required.

1100. And I feel like God says,

1101. for those of us that are exhausted,

1102. come and sit at my feet,

1103. and come and encounter me.

1104. For those who feel like they want to give,

1105. but the cost is just too high.

1106. God wants to give us His grace.

1107. And to help us see that

  1108. it's the greatest blessing

1109. to be those that follow Jesus

1110. and don't take but give.

1111. Maybe for those whose relationships

1112. have been marked by getting and taking,

  1113. your relationships are struggling,

1114. maybe your marriage is hurting,

1115. maybe some other relationship is strained.

1116. God, we pray for those people.

1117. We pray to come and bring healing

  1118. and wholeness, Lord.

  1119. We pray, Lord Jesus,

  1120. won't you come and

1121. bring freedom in those relationships, God.

1122. God, we pray for those of us here

  1123. that are hurting.

  1124. We pray, Lord God,

1125. for those that are tired and exhausted.

  1126. Holy Spirit,

1127. won't you come and refresh us.

  1128. We pray, God,

1129. for those of us that we feel like

1130. we want to be this community that gives,

1131. but God just feels like

1132. the cost is so high.

1133. God, won't you help us to see

1134. that you gave us you.

1135. You're all we need, Lord Jesus.

  1136. And then finally,

1137. for those of us that don't even know Jesus.

  1138. Maybe you know Christianity,

  1139. you know religion,

  1140. you know the Bible,

1141. but you don't know Jesus.

  1142. Friends, without Jesus,

  1143. there's nothing.

1144. Without the power of the Holy Spirit

1145. opening our eyes to see Jesus,

  1146. we have nothing.

1147. If you don't know Jesus,

1148. why don't you right now,

  1149. just say,

1150. Jesus, I want to know you.

1151. This God that so loved me

1152. that He gave Himself for me.

1153. This God that so loved me,

1154. He died on the cross for me.

1155. I want to know Him.

  1156. If that's you,

1157. what do you tell God that?

1158. Say, Jesus, I want to know you.

1159. Say, Jesus, I'm sorry for my sin.

1160. Sorry that I've lived my life

  1161. for my own pleasure

  1162. and my own glory.

1163. God, I want to live for you.

1164. I want my life transformed by you.

  1165. Christ, I pray,

  1166. won't you make us

1167. that kind of church, Lord?

  1168. Thank you for

1169. the tens and the hundreds

  1170. of men and women

  1171. that are already living

  1172. this kind of life,

  1173. the selfless,

  1174. community-giving life.

  1175. Thank you, God.

  1176. God, won't Watermark

  1177. be a light on a hill?

1178. Won't we be salt in our city?

  1179. Won't we be counterintuitive

  1180. and countercultural?

  1181. A people that give

  1182. and not take.

  1183. A people that live

1184. for the benefit of others

  1185. and not ourselves.

  1186. Holy Spirit,

1187. come to work in our hearts,

  1188. we pray.

  1189. In your name.

  1190. Amen.
