  1. Morning everybody, welcome back to our church service. It's a real pleasure to be able to welcome you wherever you're tuning in from.

  2. There's digital tea and coffee as usual afterwards and the details that you'll find either on Avanto or on your email.

  3. Well, after our week of prayer, and thanks to everyone for taking part in that, it's wonderful to be able to gather our voices and our prayers together to show our concern for our family, friends, colleagues, nation, the nations of the world.

  4. But we're back to a normal pattern this week. It's on Monday prayer at 8pm. Again, details on the email on Avanto.

  5. And our community groups are back again studying through the Gospel of John.

  6. And just to remind you that one of the reasons we're doing that is so that we might be able to use that word one-to-one resource to think about how we might be able to share the Gospel of John with a friend during this time in particular.

  7. So again, everybody's welcome. If you've not been part of a community group before, please be in touch. We'd love to get you connected.

  8. Now, our call to worship comes from Isaiah 55 this morning.

  9. From the beginning.

  10. That you may live.

  11. Here's the wonderful invitation.

  12. As God draws near to us, he invites us to draw near to him and to find that he satisfies the deep wants and longings in our hearts.

  13. And so as we begin our time together, we're going to sing.

  14. We're going to sing the hymn that we started learning last week, Jesus Strong and Kind.

  15. Really thankful to Cailin for learning it and for this recording, which we can worship God with now.

  16. Now, our Bible reading this morning comes from Matthew chapter 9.

    Matthew 9 chapter mention

  17. Matthew chapter 9.

    Matthew 9 chapter mention

  18. And we're going to read together the first 13 verses.

  19. Now, we're going to concentrate our thoughts on verses 1 to 8.

  20. So let's hear God's word together.

  21. Jesus stepped into a boat, crossed over and came to his own town.

  22. Some men brought to him a paralysed man lying on a mat.

  23. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the man,

  24. Take heart, son, your sins are forgiven.

  25. At this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves,

  26. This fellow is blaspheming.

  27. Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said,

  28. Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts?

  29. Which is easier, to say, your sins are forgiven, or to say, get up and walk.

  30. But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.

  31. So he said to the paralysed man,

  32. Get up, take your mat, and go home.

  33. Then the man got up and went home.

  34. When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe.

  35. And they praised God, who had given such authority to man.

  36. As Jesus went on from there,

  37. he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector's booth.

  38. Follow me, he told him.

  39. And Matthew got up and followed him.

  40. While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew's house,

  41. many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples.

  42. When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples,

  43. Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?

  44. On hearing this, Jesus said,

  45. It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but those who are ill.

  46. But go and learn what this means.

  47. I desire mercy, not sacrifice.

  48. For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.

  49. So as we continue to think about the subject of faith together,

  50. what we are invited to see here today from Matthew

  51. is that we are called to have faith in the sin-forgiving power of Jesus.

  52. When it comes to the telling of stories,

  53. it feels like there are maybe two main styles,

  54. two routes, as it were, to get to the same destination.

  55. Some storytellers, they like to meander.

  56. Every detail is gone into.

  57. Every point of a conversation is addressed.

  58. You find yourself maybe going on surprising sidetracks

  59. and you wonder,

  60. How in the world is this story ever going to get back to resolution?

  61. You know, you sort of beg down.

  62. This is going to be a while.

  63. Other storytellers, very different, aren't they?

  64. Very direct.

  65. Straight to the point.

  66. No elaboration.

  67. And probably, if you take a few seconds

  68. to think about your friends or your family,

  69. you'll recognise those different storytelling styles.

  70. I wonder which one you are.

  71. Terrible storytellers.

  72. I get the point.

  73. Make it.

  74. Try to move on.

  75. Matthew, our gospel writer here,

  76. he's a very direct storyteller.

  77. A number of times where he records

  78. things that happened in the life of Jesus,

  79. he strips back the details

  80. to focus on a main point.

  81. So, boys and girls,

  82. if you were to read this same story

  83. in Mark or in Luke,

  84. you would discover that really interesting

  85. and surprising moment

  86. where the friends,

  87. yes, they bring the man to Jesus,

  88. but they do that by

  89. climbing up on the roof

  90. and then digging the hole

  91. through the ceiling.

  92. You remember that story

  93. where they dig the hole in the ceiling

  94. and they lower the man down

  95. on his mat

  96. in front of Jesus

  97. while the crowd in the house

  98. are astonished at what's going on.

  99. Why is Matthew so brief?

  100. Because he wants us

  101. to not miss his goal,

  102. his point.

  103. His point is that he wants to show us

  104. the authority of Jesus in another way.

  105. This thing to show us

  106. the sin-forgiving power of Jesus.

  107. So, he takes a laser-like focus

  108. to the story

  109. so that we come to see

  110. that forgiveness

  111. is Jesus' number one priority

  112. for this man

  113. and by extension for you and for me.

  114. Matthew wants us to see

  115. that forgiveness

  116. is the greatest gift

  117. that Jesus offers.

  118. And Jesus offers that

  119. coming to us with authority

  120. as God with us.

  121. So, let's think

  122. for most of our time

  123. we'll think about Jesus' priority

  124. and think about

  125. the gift of forgiveness.

  126. So, in verse 1

  127. we're told

  128. very briefly

  129. that Jesus has arrived home.

  130. Capernaum was his hometown

  131. and what he discovers

  132. in verse 2

  133. is a man with obvious need.

  134. He is paralyzed.

  135. But that's not all

  136. Jesus discovered.

  137. We're also told in verse 2

  138. that Jesus sees

  139. their faith.

  140. Now, we're in a wider section

  141. Matthew 8 to 10

  142. where we see a lot

  143. of Jesus' authority

  144. being demonstrated

  145. in different ways.

  146. Authority over

  147. a variety of illnesses.

  148. A variety over

  149. the forces of nature

  150. like last week

  151. when he stilled the storm.

  152. Authority over demons.

  153. So, presumably

  154. these men

  155. including the paralyzed man

  156. recognized that Jesus

  157. brings hope.

  158. So, Jesus sees their faith.

  159. So, how does Jesus respond

  160. to their faith?

  161. In verse 2

  162. he said to the man

  163. take heart, son.

  164. There's encouragement.

  165. There's welcome.

  166. Then he says

  167. your sins are forgiven.

  168. Now, if you were to hear

  169. the first part

  170. of the sentence

  171. you were part of the crowd

  172. or you were

  173. the paralyzed man's friends

  174. I don't imagine

  175. that's how you expected

  176. to fill in the blank.

  177. How you would expect

  178. Jesus to conclude

  179. that sentence

  180. your sins are forgiven.

  181. For the friends

  182. as they

  183. brought the man

  184. to Jesus

  185. for the man

  186. as he came

  187. on his mat

  188. to Jesus

  189. I'm sure

  190. he would be thinking

  191. I really want to walk

  192. I really want

  193. to be able to work

  194. I would like

  195. to be able to

  196. worship

  197. in the temple

  198. perhaps

  199. he says

  200. I want to be whole

  201. Jesus says

  202. take heart, son

  203. your sins are forgiven

  204. what's happening here?

  205. What's happening

  206. is that Jesus

  207. has looked deeper

  208. into the man's problems

  209. getting all the way

  210. to his heart

  211. and he's looked wider

  212. he's looked beyond

  213. just the temporary

  214. to give hope

  215. for eternity

  216. and so Jesus

  217. comes and he provides

  218. in actual fact

  219. the deepest help

  220. and healing

  221. now Jesus

  222. could

  223. and we discovered

  224. in our story

  225. that he did

  226. heal the man's

  227. body

  228. but

  229. that man

  230. even after being

  231. healed

  232. he would still

  233. face

  234. disappointment

  235. there would

  236. still be

  237. frustrations

  238. and ultimately

  239. there would

  240. still be

  241. death

  242. so Jesus

  243. wants to go

  244. deeper

  245. and wider

  246. in the salvation

  247. that he brings

  248. there's a wonderful

  249. little phrase

  250. in Ecclesiastes

    Ecclesiastes 3 chapter mention

  251. chapter 3

  252. where we're told

  253. God has put

  254. eternity

  255. into our hearts

  256. we have

  257. we have that

  258. ache

  259. for eternity

  260. Jesus

  261. understands

  262. that knowing

  263. eternal life

  264. knowing

  265. God

  266. is where

  267. we find

  268. lasting

  269. satisfaction

  270. that's where

  271. deep and

  272. unending

  273. joy comes

  274. from

  275. and to get

  276. to that point

  277. we need

  278. forgiveness

  279. we need

  280. the barrier

  281. of sin

  282. between us

  283. and God

  284. to be removed

  285. so we see

  286. clearly

  287. Jesus loved

  288. the man

  289. and remember

  290. Jesus also

  291. healed his

  292. body

  293. because Jesus

  294. cares for us

  295. physically

  296. and spiritually

  297. and that's

  298. really good

  299. for us

  300. to remember

  301. during this

  302. crisis

  303. but his

  304. priority

  305. is spiritual

  306. and eternal

  307. verse 6

  308. I want you

  309. to know

  310. that the

  311. son of man

  312. has authority

  313. on earth

  314. to forgive

  315. sins

  316. Jesus

  317. is clear

  318. life

  319. enjoying

  320. God

  321. matters

  322. more

  323. than a

  324. life

  325. enjoying

  326. good

  327. hell

  328. can we

  329. believe

  330. that today

  331. maybe it's

  332. particularly

  333. challenging

  334. to believe

  335. that today

  336. that life

  337. enjoying

  338. God

  339. matters

  340. more than

  341. life

  342. enjoying

  343. good

  344. hell

  345. Jesus

  346. has gone

  347. above

  348. and beyond

  349. in no doubt

  350. everybody's

  351. expectations

  352. and maybe

  353. some of you

  354. listening in

  355. are sports

  356. fans and

  357. you're feeling

  358. the gap

  359. with the

  360. lack of

  361. live sport

  362. maybe

  363. like me

  364. you've been

  365. tuning in

  366. to the

  367. last dance

  368. the story

  369. of Michael

  370. Jordan

  371. Chicago Bulls

  372. on Netflix

  373. each episode

  374. tends to

  375. focus on

  376. a different

  377. character

  378. from the

  379. team

  380. and in

  381. the Dennis

  382. Rodman

  383. episode

  384. there's this

  385. wonderful

  386. moment

  387. where after

  388. a game

  389. Dennis

  390. Rodman

  391. massive

  392. tattooed

  393. multicolored

  394. haired

  395. basketball

  396. player

  397. sees a

  398. crowd of

  399. fans

  400. who are

  401. waiting

  402. beyond a

  403. barrier

  404. to get

  405. an autograph

  406. and one

  407. little boy

  408. sticks out

  409. his autograph

  410. book for

  411. Dennis to

  412. sign

  413. and what

  414. Dennis does

  415. he signs

  416. the autograph

  417. sure

  418. but then

  419. he takes

  420. a wee

  421. second

  422. and he

  423. takes his

  424. shoes off

  425. his shoulder

  426. and he

  427. gives them

  428. to the

  429. boy

  430. what a

  431. gift

  432. again hoping

  433. he saves

  434. them

  435. and he

  436. would be

  437. worth

  438. the

  439. fortune

  440. but in

  441. a much

  442. greater

  443. way

  444. Jesus

  445. has gone

  446. above

  447. and beyond

  448. what these

  449. friends could

  450. have asked

  451. as they

  452. brought

  453. their

  454. paralysed

  455. friend

  456. to Jesus

  457. but maybe

  458. we're asking

  459. why does

  460. Jesus put

  461. forgiveness

  462. first

  463. why is

  464. forgiveness

  465. his first

  466. priority

  467. and maybe

  468. it'll help

  469. if we think

  470. about the

  471. storyline

  472. of the

  473. Bible

  474. to help

  475. to see

  476. why that

  477. would be

  478. if we go

  479. back to

  480. the beginning

  481. go back

  482. to creation

  483. God made

  484. a perfect

  485. world

  486. and then

  487. he made

  488. the first

  489. people

  490. Adam and

  491. Eve

  492. and Adam

  493. and Eve

  494. they were

  495. made

  496. in the

  497. image

  498. of God

  499. they were

  500. made

  501. to steward

  502. to look

  503. after creation

  504. and they

  505. were made

  506. for a

  507. relationship

  508. with one

  509. another

  510. but they

  511. were also

  512. made to

  513. enjoy

  514. relationship

  515. with

  516. God

  517. they

  518. knew

  519. God

  520. God

  521. walked

  522. with

  523. them

  524. and

  525. talked

  526. with

  527. them

  528. so

  529. people

  530. were

  531. made

  532. for

  533. enjoying

  534. that

  535. relationship

  536. for enjoying

  537. the glory

  538. of God

  539. receiving

  540. life

  541. in that

  542. fellowship

  543. with

  544. God

  545. but from

  546. the beauty

  547. of that

  548. perfection

  549. of life

  550. in the

  551. Garden of

  552. Eden

  553. the Bible

  554. tells us

  555. there was

  556. a fall

  557. there was

  558. a rejection

  559. of God

  560. and his

  561. word

  562. which brought

  563. sin

  564. which led

  565. to shame

  566. which led

  567. to hiding

  568. from God

  569. which led

  570. to suffering

  571. and ultimately

  572. release

  573. today

  574. and Adam

  575. and Eve

  576. were sent

  577. out of the

  578. Garden

  579. symbolic

  580. of the

  581. fact

  582. that sin

  583. severs

  584. breaks

  585. the

  586. relationship

  587. between

  588. people

  589. and God

  590. so for

  591. Jesus

  592. the deepest

  593. problem

  594. then is the

  595. problem of sin

  596. deep in our

  597. heart

  598. it's the

  599. problem of

  600. ignoring God

  601. in the world

  602. that he has

  603. made

  604. it's refusing

  605. to honour

  606. God

  607. or to love

  608. him

  609. to turn

  610. our back

  611. on our

  612. father

  613. to rebel

  614. against God

  615. as king

  616. because that

  617. sin

  618. if it is not

  619. forgiven

  620. and covered

  621. leads to

  622. eternal

  623. separation

  624. so Jesus

  625. came

  626. with a

  627. clear

  628. priority

  629. to carry

  630. out a

  631. mission

  632. to

  633. rescue

  634. us

  635. to

  636. reconcile

  637. us

  638. to God

  639. to make

  640. peace

  641. with God

  642. to redeem

  643. us

  644. from a

  645. slavery to

  646. sin

  647. leading to

  648. death

  649. by

  650. forgiving

  651. sin

  652. through his

  653. death

  654. on the

  655. cross

  656. even

  657. before he

  658. was born

  659. the angels

  660. came to

  661. to marry

  662. his mother

  663. and said

  664. you are to

  665. give him

  666. the name

  667. Jesus

  668. because he

  669. will save

  670. his people

  671. from

  672. their

  673. sin

  674. so that's

  675. Jesus'

  676. priority

  677. and Jesus'

  678. greatest gift

  679. is forgiveness

  680. now I can

  681. imagine today

  682. you might very

  683. well have a

  684. list of

  685. lockdown

  686. if only

  687. if only

  688. I had that

  689. opportunity

  690. if only

  691. that freedom

  692. hadn't been

  693. denied me

  694. then I

  695. would be

  696. happy

  697. none

  698. of those

  699. if only

  700. can fill

  701. the eternal

  702. ache

  703. in your

  704. heart

  705. but Jesus

  706. can and

  707. Jesus wants

  708. to and

  709. Jesus does

  710. as people

  711. we plan

  712. we dream

  713. we make

  714. our bucket

  715. lists

  716. we make

  717. our five

  718. year

  719. plans

  720. but we

  721. need to

  722. understand

  723. that that

  724. holiday

  725. that career

  726. that family

  727. good though

  728. they may

  729. be

  730. cannot

  731. fill

  732. the God

  733. shaped

  734. hole

  735. in our

  736. heart

  737. Jesus

  738. knows

  739. the greatest

  740. gift

  741. that he

  742. can give

  743. the greatest

  744. gift that

  745. God can

  746. give you

  747. is to

  748. give himself

  749. Jesus

  750. came as

  751. God

  752. with us

  753. Jesus

  754. came to

  755. bring

  756. forgiveness

  757. so that

  758. by faith

  759. in Jesus

  760. and his

  761. work on

  762. the cross

  763. of his

  764. dying

  765. for sin

  766. taking the

  767. punishment

  768. we deserve

  769. by faith

  770. by trusting

  771. in Jesus

  772. we can have

  773. life

  774. enjoying

  775. God

  776. which is

  777. how we

  778. were made

  779. to be

  780. and that's

  781. life

  782. enjoying

  783. God now

  784. and for

  785. all

  786. eternity

  787. is Jesus

  788. priority

  789. my

  790. priority

  791. when I

  792. think about

  793. my life

  794. when you

  795. think about

  796. your

  797. life

  798. do our

  799. priorities

  800. match up

  801. with that

  802. of Jesus

  803. what about

  804. when we

  805. think about

  806. our wishes

  807. and desires

  808. for the

  809. people that

  810. we love

  811. even for

  812. the prayers

  813. that we

  814. make

  815. above all

  816. do we want

  817. people to

  818. find forgiveness

  819. so they can

  820. know

  821. life with

  822. God

  823. I

  824. started

  825. re-reading

  826. C.S.

  827. Lewis's

  828. little book

  829. The Weight

  830. of Glory

  831. and in

  832. the essay

  833. that gives

  834. the book

  835. its title

  836. Lewis discusses

  837. glory

  838. and reward

  839. in the

  840. Christian faith

  841. and what he

  842. says is that

  843. the great

  844. glory

  845. that we look

  846. forward to

  847. the reward

  848. that is ours

  849. ultimately is

  850. to be

  851. approved

  852. of

  853. by God

  854. to be

  855. welcomed

  856. by God

  857. to have

  858. God

  859. delight

  860. in us

  861. to have

  862. God

  863. love

  864. us

  865. here is

  866. the ultimate

  867. gift

  868. here is the

  869. great priority

  870. and goal

  871. that should

  872. drive our

  873. lives

  874. and Jesus

  875. came for

  876. this reason

  877. Jesus brings

  878. forgiveness

  879. for this reason

  880. so we might

  881. find our

  882. joy

  883. in God

  884. possibly the

  885. most famous

  886. quote

  887. from

  888. that essay

  889. is this one

  890. let me read it

  891. if we consider

  892. the staggering

  893. nature of the

  894. rewards promised

  895. us in the

  896. gospels

  897. it would

  898. seem

  899. our Lord

  900. finds our

  901. desires not

  902. too strong

  903. but too

  904. weak

  905. we are

  906. half-hearted

  907. creatures

  908. fooling about

  909. with drink

  910. and sex

  911. and ambition

  912. while infinite

  913. joy is

  914. offered us

  915. like an

  916. ignorant

  917. child

  918. who wants

  919. to go on

  920. making mud

  921. pies in a

  922. slum

  923. because he

  924. cannot imagine

  925. what is meant

  926. by the offer

  927. of a holiday

  928. at the scene

  929. we are

  930. far too

  931. easily

  932. pleased

  933. I wonder

  934. and does

  935. Lewis in his

  936. assessment

  937. does he reflect

  938. your life and

  939. mine today

  940. Jesus'

  941. priority

  942. Jesus'

  943. gift

  944. is that we

  945. be forgiven

  946. so that infinite

  947. joy may be

  948. ours

  949. they're

  950. connected to

  951. them

  952. and it's

  953. something that

  954. the crowds

  955. recognize or

  956. at least some

  957. of them

  958. and there is a

  959. great claim

  960. that Jesus

  961. is making

  962. the religious

  963. leaders they

  964. certainly

  965. understand this

  966. and they're

  967. shocked by

  968. Jesus'

  969. statement in

  970. verse 3

  971. Jesus having

  972. said your sins

  973. are forgiven

  974. at this

  975. some of the

  976. teachers of

  977. the law

  978. said to

  979. themselves

  980. this fellow

  981. is blaspheming

  982. he is

  983. misusing

  984. the name

  985. of God

  986. by claiming

  987. some of

  988. the rights

  989. of God

  990. they understand

  991. the implications

  992. because to

  993. forgive someone

  994. you must have

  995. been sinned

  996. against

  997. you think

  998. about this

  999. in a personal

  1000. relationship

  1001. if Tom

  1002. and Dick

  1003. have a fight

  1004. and Tom

  1005. hits Dick

  1006. Harry

  1007. person number

  1008. three he

  1009. cannot come

  1010. along and say

  1011. I forgive

  1012. you

  1013. only Dick

  1014. can do

  1015. that

  1016. so to

  1017. forgive

  1018. someone

  1019. you must

  1020. have been

  1021. sinned

  1022. against

  1023. and they

  1024. understand

  1025. that

  1026. and another

  1027. thing that

  1028. they understand

  1029. the religious

  1030. leaders is

  1031. that forgiveness

  1032. belongs to

  1033. God

  1034. in Psalm 51

  1035. in verse 4

  1036. David

  1037. confessing

  1038. sin says

  1039. against you

  1040. and you

  1041. only have

  1042. I sinned

  1043. other people

  1044. have been

  1045. sinned against

  1046. but primarily

  1047. it's against

  1048. God

  1049. God establishes

  1050. the rule

  1051. so every

  1052. time we

  1053. break those

  1054. rules

  1055. every time

  1056. we break

  1057. God's

  1058. commands

  1059. we are

  1060. sinning

  1061. against

  1062. God

  1063. and even

  1064. when we

  1065. sin against

  1066. another person

  1067. we are

  1068. sinning

  1069. against

  1070. an image

  1071. bearer

  1072. of God

  1073. and so

  1074. we sin

  1075. against

  1076. God

  1077. so the

  1078. religious

  1079. leaders

  1080. they understand

  1081. in a moment

  1082. that Jesus

  1083. is saying

  1084. I am

  1085. God

  1086. and as

  1087. God

  1088. I forgive

  1089. you

  1090. that's a

  1091. huge claim

  1092. isn't it

  1093. now the

  1094. heart of

  1095. the religious

  1096. leaders

  1097. opposition

  1098. is that

  1099. they reject

  1100. the claims

  1101. of Jesus

  1102. they refuse

  1103. to believe

  1104. he is God

  1105. Jesus

  1106. speaking of

  1107. their thoughts

  1108. says

  1109. why do you

  1110. entertain

  1111. evil thoughts

  1112. in your

  1113. hearts

  1114. and then

  1115. in verses

  1116. five and

  1117. six there

  1118. is the

  1119. question

  1120. which

  1121. is

  1122. easier

  1123. to say

  1124. your sins

  1125. are forgiven

  1126. or to say

  1127. get up

  1128. and walk

  1129. and this is a

  1130. question that

  1131. that provokes

  1132. quite a lot

  1133. of debate

  1134. when you read

  1135. different books

  1136. or you hear

  1137. people talk

  1138. I guess

  1139. for us

  1140. in the 21st

  1141. century

  1142. our instinct

  1143. might be

  1144. well

  1145. talk is

  1146. cheap

  1147. it's

  1148. easy in a

  1149. sense to

  1150. say your

  1151. sins are

  1152. forgiven

  1153. because there's

  1154. no proof

  1155. of that

  1156. therefore get

  1157. up and walk

  1158. is harder

  1159. because that

  1160. needs proof

  1161. but I

  1162. wonder if

  1163. that would

  1164. be how a

  1165. first century

  1166. religious person

  1167. might think

  1168. they might

  1169. say well

  1170. we know

  1171. that there

  1172. are other

  1173. people who

  1174. have healed

  1175. with the

  1176. power of

  1177. God

  1178. maybe it's

  1179. harder

  1180. to

  1181. to say

  1182. your sins

  1183. are forgiven

  1184. because that's

  1185. claiming the

  1186. rights and

  1187. the authority

  1188. of God

  1189. and to a

  1190. religious society

  1191. that took the

  1192. name of God

  1193. that took the

  1194. holiness of God

  1195. seriously

  1196. that's a hard

  1197. thing to claim

  1198. but what Jesus

  1199. does either way

  1200. it's hard to say

  1201. which is true

  1202. but either way

  1203. Jesus connects

  1204. forgiveness of sin

  1205. and the healing

  1206. of the man

  1207. to claim identity

  1208. of God

  1209. to claim

  1210. the power of God

  1211. especially the

  1212. power of God

  1213. to forgive sin

  1214. now on this

  1215. it's so important

  1216. for us

  1217. that we take

  1218. Jesus' claims

  1219. seriously

  1220. sometimes when

  1221. people don't

  1222. make a full

  1223. study of the

  1224. Bible

  1225. they maybe think

  1226. I like Jesus

  1227. I like he's a

  1228. good teacher

  1229. I like they went

  1230. around helping

  1231. people

  1232. like some of

  1233. his wise

  1234. teaching

  1235. but you can't

  1236. really ignore

  1237. when Jesus

  1238. claims to be

  1239. God as he does

  1240. in many many

  1241. many different

  1242. ways

  1243. in the 19th

  1244. century there

  1245. was a professor

  1246. at the Free

  1247. Church College

  1248. who went by

  1249. the nickname

  1250. of Rabbi

  1251. Duncan

  1252. and he was

  1253. followed in the

  1254. 20th century

  1255. again by

  1256. C.S. Lewis

  1257. who both

  1258. present

  1259. a response

  1260. to the

  1261. claims of

  1262. Jesus

  1263. Rabbi Duncan

  1264. talks about

  1265. it as a

  1266. trilemma

  1267. you know

  1268. Jesus

  1269. when he makes

  1270. claims like

  1271. this he's

  1272. either a

  1273. liar

  1274. who is

  1275. deliberately

  1276. deceiving

  1277. people

  1278. he are

  1279. deliberately

  1280. deceiving

  1281. us on the

  1282. fact that he

  1283. can forgive

  1284. sins

  1285. he's either

  1286. a lunatic

  1287. who's completely

  1288. self-deluded

  1289. who's got

  1290. delusions of

  1291. grandeur

  1292. and imagines

  1293. he's God

  1294. when actually

  1295. he's just

  1296. a normal

  1297. person

  1298. who's

  1299. imbalanced

  1300. or

  1301. we take

  1302. his claims

  1303. seriously

  1304. we recognise

  1305. that he

  1306. is

  1307. Lord

  1308. he is

  1309. either

  1310. truly

  1311. evil

  1312. because

  1313. he's

  1314. claiming

  1315. to be

  1316. the way

  1317. to God

  1318. and millions

  1319. and millions

  1320. of people

  1321. have followed

  1322. Jesus

  1323. because of

  1324. those claims

  1325. because of

  1326. his truth

  1327. because of

  1328. his life

  1329. or

  1330. he's either

  1331. truly evil

  1332. or he's

  1333. truly good

  1334. he is

  1335. truly

  1336. God

  1337. there is

  1338. no halfway

  1339. house

  1340. if we take

  1341. Jesus'

  1342. claims

  1343. seriously

  1344. it doesn't

  1345. allow us

  1346. to sit

  1347. on the

  1348. fence

  1349. what's

  1350. what's at

  1351. stake

  1352. when it

  1353. comes to

  1354. thinking

  1355. about

  1356. Jesus'

  1357. identity

  1358. well if

  1359. we

  1360. trust

  1361. the

  1362. gospels

  1363. Jesus

  1364. is

  1365. God

  1366. who is

  1367. with us

  1368. who has

  1369. become

  1370. one of

  1371. us

  1372. to save

  1373. us

  1374. to forgive

  1375. our sin

  1376. to bring

  1377. to us

  1378. eternal

  1379. life

  1380. and eternal

  1381. hope

  1382. so it's

  1383. really

  1384. important

  1385. that each

  1386. one of

  1387. us

  1388. takes

  1389. seriously

  1390. the

  1391. identity

  1392. of

  1393. Jesus

  1394. because

  1395. of the

  1396. claims

  1397. that he

  1398. makes

  1399. and if

  1400. Jesus

  1401. is who

  1402. he claims

  1403. to be

  1404. how do

  1405. I respond

  1406. we see

  1407. two positive

  1408. responses to

  1409. Jesus in

  1410. our story

  1411. first we

  1412. saw the

  1413. men who

  1414. had faith

  1415. here is a

  1416. call to

  1417. trust in

  1418. Jesus

  1419. to trust

  1420. that he

  1421. is strong

  1422. and kind

  1423. to trust

  1424. that he

  1425. is the

  1426. saviour

  1427. that you

  1428. need

  1429. to trust

  1430. that he

  1431. can meet

  1432. your deepest

  1433. need

  1434. that he

  1435. can forgive

  1436. your sin

  1437. he can

  1438. bring you

  1439. peace

  1440. with God

  1441. he can

  1442. give you

  1443. hope of

  1444. eternal

  1445. life that

  1446. will never

  1447. end

  1448. of perfect

  1449. joy

  1450. and

  1451. so one

  1452. response is

  1453. B

  1454. the other

  1455. positive

  1456. response we

  1457. find in

  1458. here is

  1459. awe

  1460. and praise

  1461. the crowd

  1462. recognise

  1463. Jesus is

  1464. awesome

  1465. in the

  1466. truest sense

  1467. of the

  1468. word

  1469. they recognise

  1470. the authority

  1471. of Jesus

  1472. and they

  1473. praise God

  1474. for the

  1475. gift that

  1476. he brings

  1477. Jesus

  1478. came to

  1479. forgive

  1480. sin

  1481. that's not
