  1. Father, you know how sometimes we're very afraid of questions.

  2. Sometimes we're very afraid of our own questions.

  3. You know, Father, that some of us are afraid to let people around us know that we follow Jesus.

  4. Father, you know that some of us have problems with addictions or with bills

  5. or just things in our life that make us very, very fearful.

  6. Father, you know that some of us are just fearful about the way society is.

  7. And Father, we give you thanks and praise that you know our fears.

  8. And we ask that you would gently but deeply pour out your Holy Spirit upon us

  9. so that your word, Father, might enter deep into us,

  10. that we might be free and courageous as your word enters into us

  11. and we might live not only in this city but to the ends of the earth,

  12. free and full of courage to bring you glory.

  13. And this we ask in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  14. Please be seated.

  15. Some of you have been to my house over the years and for 14 and a half years

  16. we've had a little, a tiny little white dog named Pixie,

  17. only weighed about three and a half pounds.

  18. We have two other dogs that are far bigger but we have this little dog, Pixie,

  19. that we've had for 14 and a half years.

  20. He's been part of our family and on Friday night he died.

  21. She died, I should say.

  22. Her name was Pixie and she died and it was very sad.

  23. She has been sick for a couple of months and we could see her fading

  24. and she'd probably become blind and probably become deaf and wasn't eating

  25. but it's still very sad when she dies, when she died.

  26. And yesterday my daughter Emma dug a hole in the backyard and we buried her.

  27. And last night I had a dream.

  28. And in my dream, and I wasn't always the biggest Pixie fan, by the way,

  29. but in the dream, I had a dream about Pixie last night.

  30. And in the dream it was like Pixie on steroids.

  31. She wasn't three and a half pounds, she was at least 10 pounds or maybe even 11.

  32. So quite big for Pixie and quite muscular and frisky and I had a dream about her.

  33. And that's all very, ah.

  34. But what on earth does that mean?

  35. I mean, what does it mean?

  36. So I had a dream about Pixie.

  37. You know, if you think about it, on one hand, if we were to go to a party

  38. and start telling people about our dreams and maybe what they mean and all of that type of stuff,

  39. you know, our neighbors would actually think,

  40. wow, you know, you Christians aren't quite as anal as I thought.

  41. Like, you know, you have cool dreams and stuff and you talk about them.

  42. On the other hand, like what's going on with this in the story?

  43. Like if one of you was engaged to be married to somebody,

  44. like I would, you know, you're engaged to be married to a woman,

  45. you're a guy and you're engaged to be married to a woman,

  46. and she's pregnant.

  47. She gets pregnant after you're engaged,

  48. and you know that the baby's not yours.

  49. I mean, you probably wouldn't go ahead and marry her.

  50. And if you told your buddies that you'd had a dream the night before

  51. and because of the dream you were going to marry the woman,

  52. they'd go, oh, come on, dude, bro.

  53. Like, it's just a dream.

  54. Like, the dream just means you like her.

  55. It doesn't mean, it means you still have some feelings for her.

  56. It doesn't mean you marry her.

  57. I mean, she's pregnant with another guy's baby,

  58. and she did that when she was engaged to you.

  59. How on earth could you go ahead?

  60. Like, the dream just doesn't cut it.

  61. I mean, and the other thing about this story which we just read,

  62. which is also very odd if you think about it,

  63. like, what's going on with Joseph?

  64. Like, I don't know.

  65. Like, he never had a dream before in his life,

  66. and this was a complete surprise, so he went ahead and did it.

  67. Like, did he move every time he had a dream that told him to move?

  68. Like, did he name every one of his kids, you know, like, after a dream?

  69. Like, what's going on with Joseph?

  70. Like, why on earth would he take a particular dream

  71. and think that that means he has to do something like,

  72. go against his own inclinations

  73. and the inclinations of all of his friends and all of his family

  74. and probably all of the village?

  75. And like, why on earth, out of all the dreams,

  76. would this particular dream be any type of significance for him?

  77. Like, you know, apart from the fact

  78. that there's sentimental attachments to this story,

  79. it's like it's really odd and weird if you think about it.

  80. So we're going to look at it.

  81. Like, what was it that in this dream

  82. that would have changed Joseph's complete and utter life?

  83. So let's look.

  84. If you have your Bibles, it's Matthew 1, verse 18.

    Matthew 1:18

  85. If you don't have your Bibles, there's at least one Bible there.

  86. We can get more as well.

  87. If you'd like, you can just get up and get it.

  88. And if you have a phone with data and you're on YouVersion,

  89. you go to events, the notes and all are there as well

  90. if you want to follow along.

  91. But here's how it goes.

  92. Just look.

  93. Like, is there some hint or clue within the biblical narrative

  94. as to why on earth Joseph did something which,

  95. if we're frank, like if it was your brother,

  96. if it was your best friend, if it was your son,

  97. and he came and told you that it was because of a dream

  98. that he was going to go ahead and marry the girl,

  99. like, you'd give him a hard time, right?

  100. So is there some hint in the biblical text about this

  101. that helps us try to understand what's going on

  102. so it's not just weird?

  103. And so here's how it goes.

  104. Matthew 1.18.

  105. Now, the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way.

  106. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph,

  107. and some of you, if you're a guest here

  108. and you have never come to a Christmas service before,

  109. in the ancient world, there were sort of two very formal events.

  110. It's not like today, where basically the big thing

  111. is just the wedding.

  112. In Jesus' time, there was like a very formal ceremony

  113. that made you engaged.

  114. And it was so formal that if you broke the engagement,

  115. you'd actually have to have a divorce procedure.

  116. And it was so formal that if your fiancé died

  117. after this ceremony, you'd actually be considered

  118. a widow or a widower,

  119. even though you hadn't actually been married.

  120. So Mary and Joseph had the first solemn event,

  121. but the second solemn event where they actually live together,

  122. have sexual relations with each other,

  123. where they're, you know, in a sense, in our sense, fully married,

  124. that hasn't happened yet.

  125. Okay?

  126. So that's just a bit of background.

  127. So we'll say it again.

  128. When his mother Mary, in verse 18 still,

  129. had been betrothed to Joseph,

  130. before they came together,

  131. she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit.

  132. And just pause there again for a second.

  133. There isn't, if you're wondering,

  134. there's no ancient category of people claiming

  135. to have children from the Holy Spirit.

  136. Basically, it's a summary of what,

  137. Matthew just giving a very short summary

  138. of what Mary told him.

  139. You can hear more about that if you read Luke.

  140. But Mary has obviously,

  141. she's probably about four months pregnant,

  142. so she's starting to show.

  143. And it can't be kept secret.

  144. And she's come back to the village.

  145. And she goes and she has what must have been

  146. the world's most awkward meeting imaginable,

  147. where she tells Joseph that she's four months pregnant,

  148. or five months or whatever,

  149. she's four or five months pregnant,

  150. and that she'd never slept with another man,

  151. and that in fact God had come to her

  152. and asked her permission for him

  153. to do a miracle of creation in her womb,

  154. and in our language to put a fetus in her womb.

  155. And that would have been a very, very awkward conversation.

  156. And Matthew just very touches by saying

  157. a child from the Holy Spirit.

  158. And then we see in verse 19,

  159. and her husband Joseph being a just man,

  160. that means he was fair, he was just.

  161. Everything that we take with this idea

  162. of being a just person,

  163. that also would include for us a sense of compassion.

  164. That's how Joseph's described.

  165. And unwilling to put her to shame,

  166. resolved to divorce her quietly.

  167. Now just sort of pause here for a second.

  168. This is one of the things which is really important

  169. for us to remember is just because Joseph

  170. didn't have BuzzFeed in Instagram

  171. doesn't mean he's stupid.

  172. In fact, you could even say that

  173. if you use too much Instagram in BuzzFeed,

  174. it makes you stupid.

  175. So he might have been smarter.

  176. But just because he didn't use flush toilets

  177. doesn't mean he's stupid.

  178. Those are just technological things.

  179. It doesn't mean they, you know,

  180. it's very, very interesting.

  181. If you go and try to read old books,

  182. like if you go try to read Augustine

  183. or older writing,

  184. it's hard for us to read it.

  185. And part of the reason it's hard for us to read it

  186. is that they're so logical.

  187. And they think so deeply upon

  188. slight nuances in words.

  189. And we don't realize it,

  190. but in fact, we've lost something

  191. that they were very smart.

  192. And he knew how babies came about.

  193. And basically he didn't buy it.

  194. Yeah, right.

  195. God came to you.

  196. We're here in Nowheresville.

  197. And you're nobody.

  198. Your parents are nobodies.

  199. Your grandparents are nobodies.

  200. You're a nobody.

  201. I'm a nobody.

  202. We're in Nowheresville.

  203. And God came and spoke to you

  204. and said he was going to make

  205. an act of creation in your womb

  206. to make you pregnant.

  207. And Joseph didn't believe it for a second

  208. because he's not a dumb guy.

  209. But he's a just guy.

  210. I don't know what he was thinking.

  211. And it doesn't tell you whether he ranted

  212. and all that type of stuff privately

  213. or how depressed he was.

  214. Maybe he wanted to, I don't know,

  215. whatever he wanted to hurt her.

  216. But he comes to his senses

  217. because fundamentally he's a just guy

  218. and he decides I'm going to divorce her.

  219. That's the right thing to do.

  220. But I'm going to do it quietly

  221. and to try to minimize her embarrassment and shame.

  222. And then verse 20.

  223. But as he considered these things,

  224. behold, an angel of the Lord

  225. appeared to him in a dream saying,

  226. Joseph, son of David.

  227. So this is with the angel.

  228. This is Matthew's,

  229. Joseph's summary

  230. that Matthew would have learned much later.

  231. Joseph, son of David,

  232. do not fear to take Mary as your wife

  233. for that which is conceived in her

  234. is from the Holy Spirit.

  235. She will bear a son

  236. and you shall call his name Jesus

  237. for he will save his people

  238. from their sins.

  239. Now,

  240. look again here how it says,

  241. look at verse 20 again,

  242. an angel of the Lord

  243. appeared to him in a dream saying,

  244. now it's,

  245. you can sort of see it in English.

  246. It's more obvious

  247. in the original language.

  248. But if you could put the first point up,

  249. that would be very helpful.

  250. Here's the point.

  251. Joseph did not dream about an angel.

  252. The angel of the Lord

  253. took over Joseph's dream

  254. and spoke to him by name.

  255. Joseph did not dream about an angel.

  256. The angel of the Lord

  257. took over Joseph's dream

  258. and spoke to him by name.

  259. In the original language,

  260. all of the language is passive.

  261. It's not about Joseph

  262. waking up the next day

  263. and saying,

  264. I had a dream

  265. and in my dream,

  266. I saw an angel

  267. and in my dream,

  268. I heard an angel say this.

  269. Everything that mentions Joseph

  270. is in the divine passive sense,

  271. which is a tense

  272. in the original language,

  273. that something or another,

  274. Joseph,

  275. rather than being the dream

  276. coming from Joseph's mind

  277. or his unconscious

  278. or his subconscious

  279. and emerging out of it,

  280. all of a sudden,

  281. he becomes passive.

  282. And the active person

  283. in the dream

  284. is the angel of the Lord.

  285. The implication is

  286. that Joseph isn't dreaming

  287. of an angel.

  288. The angel takes over

  289. Joseph's dream.

  290. Now, it doesn't describe

  291. psychologically what that's like,

  292. but it would be a little bit like

  293. if you watch certain types

  294. of movies,

  295. of which I am prone to watch,

  296. I must confess,

  297. where there's a terrorist

  298. or some evil criminal mastermind

  299. who happens to have

  300. an unbelievable computer hacker

  301. who can effortlessly

  302. take over systems

  303. or it's an alien invasion.

  304. And, you know,

  305. you've seen those types of movies

  306. that all of a sudden,

  307. I don't know,

  308. they're watching the NFL

  309. or they're watching The Crown

  310. on Netflix

  311. or something like that.

  312. You know,

  313. maybe your wife's upstairs

  314. watching The Crown

  315. on Netflix,

  316. you're downstairs

  317. watching the NFL

  318. and all of a sudden

  319. you see some crazed

  320. Russian megalomaniac

  321. giving you some message

  322. about how he's going

  323. to destroy the society.

  324. And you see that

  325. in the NFL game

  326. and your wife upstairs

  327. watching The Crown

  328. on Netflix,

  329. she sees it as well

  330. and then you kind of

  331. change the channel

  332. and every channel you go to,

  333. just like in the movies,

  334. all of a sudden

  335. every single channel

  336. it's the same guy.

  337. And then you go

  338. to turn the TV off

  339. and you can't turn the TV off,

  340. it's the same guy.

  341. And this megalomaniac terrorist

  342. has taken control

  343. of your television

  344. and every single

  345. television channels

  346. and even the internet feeds

  347. that give you news flick

  348. and you know,

  349. and in the movies

  350. they go,

  351. it's on every channel.

  352. And then you all

  353. look panicked.

  354. And of course,

  355. there's some,

  356. you know,

  357. former loser,

  358. drug addict,

  359. alcoholic with his

  360. nerdy buddy

  361. who'll save the movie

  362. at the end of the day.

  363. But that's the movie.

  364. Here's the real thing.

  365. But the implication is,

  366. right,

  367. if you saw that TV,

  368. you'd know that somebody

  369. had taken over

  370. the television

  371. and taken over

  372. all of the feeds.

  373. Impossible in real life,

  374. by the way,

  375. but that's a separate thing.

  376. In this thing,

  377. the language is

  378. that the angel

  379. takes over Joseph's dream

  380. and while it doesn't tell you

  381. all the psychological

  382. things about it,

  383. I mean,

  384. I'm sure he had all these

  385. conversations with Mary

  386. and his buddies about it,

  387. the scriptures are very,

  388. very sparse.

  389. But the angel

  390. takes over the dream.

  391. And Joseph,

  392. who's probably had

  393. many,

  394. many,

  395. many dreams,

  396. hundreds,

  397. thousands of dreams,

  398. this is not like

  399. any other dream,

  400. all of a sudden

  401. he's passive.

  402. The angel

  403. has taken over

  404. the dream

  405. and Joseph

  406. knows it.

  407. Why would Matthew

  408. believe this,

  409. do you think?

  410. And why should you

  411. and I maybe

  412. believe this?

  413. You know,

  414. here's the thing

  415. about Matthew.

  416. Those of you

  417. who are long-term

  418. Christians

  419. might know

  420. a little bit

  421. about it,

  422. but Matthew,

  423. he was a hard-headed

  424. businessman.

  425. He was a tax collector

  426. and in those days

  427. that meant

  428. he would have

  429. had staff,

  430. he would have

  431. had to work,

  432. he would have

  433. been literate

  434. because he'd

  435. have to read

  436. financial documents

  437. and he was

  438. one who would

  439. have gone around

  440. to the different

  441. people in the region

  442. to collect the taxes

  443. from them.

  444. It means he would

  445. have been very,

  446. very shrewd

  447. in telling when

  448. a person's giving

  449. him a whole pile

  450. of,

  451. you know,

  452. bull

  453. and he would

  454. be very,

  455. very shrewd

  456. at trying to look

  457. at and figure out

  458. just from the way

  459. you were living

  460. in your house

  461. how much money

  462. you had

  463. and how many

  464. crops you had

  465. and be able

  466. to get the right

  467. taxes

  468. and he would

  469. have been able

  470. to understand

  471. that he had

  472. to get a,

  473. you know,

  474. the more he could

  475. get,

  476. the more he would

  477. pocket because he

  478. just gives a lump

  479. sum to the Romans

  480. and that's Matthew

  481. and in the Gospels

  482. it never goes into

  483. too much about

  484. how it is

  485. that Jesus,

  486. there was just

  487. something remarkable

  488. about Jesus

  489. that was so remarkable

  490. that Matthew

  491. was willing to

  492. leave his tax

  493. collector stuff

  494. to follow Jesus

  495. but then,

  496. you know,

  497. when it came time

  498. at the end

  499. when Jesus dies

  500. upon the cross,

  501. Matthew,

  502. who's a shrewd

  503. guy,

  504. he knows how

  505. the world works,

  506. he knows how

  507. money works,

  508. he knows how

  509. people work,

  510. he's literate

  511. but he doesn't

  512. believe that Jesus

  513. rose from the dead

  514. and so Matthew

  515. just like all

  516. of the other

  517. apostles,

  518. he leaves Jesus,

  519. it's the complete

  520. end of all

  521. of his dreams.

  522. Matthew has taken

  523. a sabbatical

  524. from making his money,

  525. he's probably thinking

  526. I'm just going to

  527. go back to making

  528. money because I

  529. thought Jesus

  530. was special,

  531. he was special,

  532. there was something

  533. real about him,

  534. something that was

  535. sane about him,

  536. something that was

  537. compassionate about him

  538. and now he's dead

  539. and what changed

  540. Matthew is the

  541. resurrection.

  542. It changed Matthew

  543. so much that the

  544. records are that

  545. Matthew never went

  546. back to making

  547. lots of money

  548. and rather than

  549. making lots of money

  550. he spent the rest

  551. of his life

  552. telling people

  553. that Jesus

  554. came from God

  555. and that Jesus

  556. had died upon the

  557. cross and he rose

  558. and he defeated

  559. death and not only

  560. does Matthew do

  561. this in Jerusalem

  562. but he eventually

  563. does it in what

  564. we now call Iran

  565. and he does it

  566. in what we now

  567. call Ethiopia

  568. and it's in Ethiopia

  569. that because of his

  570. proclamation he's

  571. murdered as a direct

  572. order from the king

  573. who didn't want him

  574. disturbing their

  575. pagan society.

  576. What changes it for

  577. Matthew is the

  578. resurrection.

  579. That's what should

  580. change it for you

  581. and me.

  582. The resurrection

  583. changes everything

  584. and it's not just

  585. that there's this

  586. odd conjuring trick

  587. with bones that's

  588. done to the body

  589. of Jesus but

  590. the resurrection

  591. Jesus tells us

  592. that in his

  593. all of the historical

  594. documents record

  595. how Jesus tells

  596. people that he's

  597. coming he's come

  598. to earth to die

  599. upon the cross

  600. and after he dies

  601. on the third day

  602. he will rise from

  603. that he tells his

  604. disciples that he

  605. tells people that

  606. and it's not just

  607. that there's this

  608. odd conjuring

  609. trick with bones

  610. but it all takes

  611. place Jesus said

  612. he's fulfilling

  613. what we call the

  614. Old Testament and

  615. Jewish people call

  616. the Tanakh that it

  617. fulfills the Tanakh

  618. in other words that

  619. it's not just some

  620. idle prophecy that

  621. just may it's not

  622. like Jesus is some

  623. type of David Blaine

  624. but that there's

  625. this there's thousands

  626. hundreds centuries

  627. and centuries of

  628. stories and of

  629. narrative and of

  630. philosophy and of

  631. theology and of

  632. wisdom and of

  633. insight and it's in

  634. all of this context

  635. that Jesus says he

  636. comes to fulfill it

  637. I'm going to die

  638. on the cross I'm

  639. going to rise from

  640. the dead even though

  641. the cross is a sign

  642. of shame I'm going

  643. to rise from the

  644. dead and it vindicates

  645. Jesus it vindicates

  646. its message and it

  647. means that Matthew is

  648. willing to completely

  649. and utterly turn his

  650. life around because

  651. he's an actual

  652. witness on many

  653. occasions of the

  654. resurrected Jesus

  655. and so these stories

  656. that he would have

  657. heard from his early

  658. days of following

  659. Jesus that Mary never

  660. knew a man that God

  661. did a work of a

  662. miracle in Mary's

  663. womb and now these

  664. stories of Joseph of

  665. how he was because

  666. you know Matthew

  667. would have said come

  668. on dude why on earth

  669. did you marry her when

  670. she was pregnant and

  671. Matthew would have

  672. said I mean Joseph

  673. would have said or

  674. told people you know

  675. and Matthew would have

  676. heard eventually that

  677. it was all you know

  678. that the angel took

  679. over my dream and he

  680. spoke to me by name

  681. and he told me what's

  682. gone on

  683. angel took over my

  684. dream and Matthew

  685. then would have

  686. believed it

  687. Matthew would have

  688. believed it that's

  689. that's in a sense why

  690. why we can believe it

  691. as well

  692. now just one other

  693. little thing here this

  694. is really more of a

  695. bit of a timeout I

  696. just want to share

  697. something with you

  698. you know I one of the

  699. things which is so

  700. wonderful for this

  701. story if you're a

  702. Christian

  703. when I get asked to

  704. pray for somebody who

  705. has dementia when I

  706. get asked to pray for

  707. somebody who's in a

  708. coma and they're

  709. unresponsive stories

  710. like this give me so

  711. much hope I can have

  712. the people I can have

  713. the family members and

  714. I can say you know

  715. what we cannot reach

  716. this person but Jesus

  717. can reach them wherever

  718. wherever they are lost

  719. in dementia lost in the

  720. coma Jesus can speak to

  721. them in their dreams so

  722. why don't we pray we'll

  723. pray for healing of the

  724. body we'll pray for

  725. healing of the mind we'll

  726. pray for healing but let's

  727. also pray that Jesus will

  728. meet them where they are he

  729. can do what we can't and I

  730. find that a profound comfort

  731. when I have to pray for

  732. somebody who's lost in

  733. Alzheimer's or lost in a

  734. coma that Jesus could speak

  735. to Joseph the angel in a

  736. sense could take over the

  737. dream and speak let's pray

  738. that God will do this for a

  739. loved one but back to this

  740. one of the problems that

  741. many of us have with what

  742. the angel said is that the

  743. word saved is corny like you

  744. don't think it's corny go to

  745. an office party this week and

  746. say hi I'm George I'm saved

  747. the whole room would probably

  748. stop talking everybody's

  749. eyeballs would hit the top of

  750. their right through the eyes

  751. heads would all shake

  752. chiropractors would have to

  753. be visited within the next few

  754. days because people would go

  755. oh you're saved and if you

  756. wanted to make sure that you

  757. went to a party and nobody

  758. talked to you for the rest of

  759. the night just begin by

  760. saying hi I'm George or

  761. whatever your name is I'm

  762. saved and you can have a

  763. nice quiet party for the

  764. rest of the evening because

  765. nobody will talk to you

  766. because it's corny it's the

  767. sort of thing that if a comic

  768. wants to get a laugh he can

  769. talk about yeah I met this

  770. guy at a party said he was

  771. saved oh the whole room

  772. laughs so it's corny so it's a

  773. bit of a problem for us

  774. Canadians if we're honest about

  775. this language let's but you

  776. know let's look look again at

  777. this at the text and we'll see

  778. what we can do with it look

  779. again at verse 20 but as he

  780. that's Joseph considered these

  781. things behold an angel of the

  782. Lord appeared to him in a dream

  783. saying Joseph son of David do

  784. not fear to take Mary as your

  785. wife for that which is conceived

  786. in her is from the Holy Spirit

  787. she will bear a son and you

  788. shall call his name Jesus and

  789. Jesus by the way means God

  790. saves for he will save his

  791. people from their sins all this

  792. took place to fulfill what the

  793. Lord had spoken by the prophet in

  794. the prophets Isaiah it's about

  795. 700 years earlier behold the

  796. virgin shall conceive and bear a

  797. son and they shall call his name

  798. Emmanuel which means God with us

  799. so part of that's what the angel

  800. said and part of that's what

  801. Matthew said right but here's the

  802. first thing if you could put it up

  803. Jesus alone I'm going to make it

  804. worse for you okay I'm going to

  805. make it weirder for you because the

  806. Bible here doesn't actually leave us

  807. any option Jesus alone saves me from

  808. my sins and he alone saves you from

  809. your sins Jesus alone saves me from

  810. my sins and he alone saves you from

  811. your sins he doesn't come along and

  812. say I'm going to work with you as you

  813. get saved from your sins he doesn't

  814. say I'm going to help you get

  815. saved from your sins he doesn't say

  816. I'm going to inspire you to get saved

  817. from your sins and he's not saying

  818. I'm just going to help you get saved

  819. from sin in general, as if somehow or another you're some noble soul trapped amongst a whole

  820. group of idiots in the world, although you might feel like that day after day. He's not saying,

  821. you're a noble soul trapped in a world filled with idiots, and I'm going to save you from it.

  822. No, the message is very, very clear, very, very simple, very, very pointed, very, very angular,

  823. and for us Canadians, very, very uncomfortable. But if it actually is God saying it,

  824. and you see, that's the implication here. It's not just that there's some interesting spiritual

  825. being called an angel. It's the angel of the Lord. The implication is that all the angel is

  826. is God's mouthpiece to say what God wants to say to Joseph. And then Matthew makes it clear by saying

  827. that God actually does the same thing through the prophet Isaiah and says something very,

  828. very similar, that it's one God who speaks, that this is God. And the significance of it is that

  829. it's God interpreting the meaning of the action that he has done. So the text is saying that God

  830. is the one who does a miracle, a miracle of creation in the womb of Mary, so that Mary,

  831. who has never known a man sexually, now she becomes pregnant. It's a miracle of creation

  832. within the womb of Mary, that God does this. He does it completely. And then he gives the

  833. interpretation, the meaning, the significance, what was going on in his mind, what was going on in his

  834. heart, what is his understanding of why he did what he did. And he said, I'm doing this so that you,

  835. George, will be saved not from sin in general, but from your sins.

  836. Now, when I share about Jesus with people, I don't usually use the language of save from their sins,

  837. because for many people, that's a bridge too far. It's too hard for them to understand.

  838. But it, and when I became a Christian, when I was in grade 12 and I became a Christian,

  839. what led me to becoming a Christian wasn't the sense of my sin, but it was a sense of,

  840. in my case, it was a sense of profound emptiness and probably a large dose of despair.

  841. And a sense that as I came to know some Christians, and as I came to understand more about Jesus,

  842. that there was a type of fullness and wholeness that I needed,

  843. that I could only get from Jesus. And that's what led me to go to give my faith to Jesus.

  844. And so often when I talk to people, but here's why the language is so important for us.

  845. You see, eventually we need to be gripped with this language, even though it's something that

  846. would cause people to mock us. The thing about sin, which is significant, is it specifically entails God.

  847. You see, I might be very conscious of the different ways that I've wronged my wife,

  848. or the different ways that I've wronged my children. And I might think that I've done something wrong.

  849. I might say that I've done something bad, and I might feel guilty about it, but it's very easy for me

  850. to go through life feeling bad about things that I've done, but God is still completely and utterly absent.

  851. It's entirely a universe of me thinking I've done things wrong, or me thinking I've done things right,

  852. but it's an universe where there is no God, or if there is a God, he's very distant,

  853. he has no particular views on anything. But the language of sin specifically entails God.

  854. It's the language of saying that there are things that I do that either cause me to turn my back on God,

  855. or ignore God, or push God away, or resent God, or just continually live my life as if God does not exist.

  856. And the language of sin encompasses that, and that's why it's so important for us to keep it,

  857. even if it becomes something that it's hard for us to share with another person trying to become a Christian,

  858. but it's important for us to always keep that before ourselves,

  859. that we don't live in a universe where God doesn't exist.

  860. We don't live in a universe where God is off on a vacation, and everything is running on its own.

  861. We live in a universe where God created all things, and where God sustains every single atom,

  862. every single molecule, every single planet. God sustains everything in existence.

  863. He keeps it going. It's ordered, and it's not closed to him.

  864. And that's why he can speak through angels, and that's why he can speak through his word,

  865. and that's why in this universe that he keeps ordered, he can do acts of creation within it.

  866. It's how he has to come to do something to save us.

  867. Why do I have to be saved?

  868. I'm not just being saved because I live in a world filled with idiots.

  869. I mean, you're saying that about me, right?

  870. I mean, you know, just, you know.

  871. It's that I live my life in such a way that my posture towards God

  872. means that I am in the greatest possible danger,

  873. and I cannot do anything to deliver myself from that greatest possible danger,

  874. and that God needs to do everything that's required to be done

  875. for me to be delivered from the grave danger that I personally am in.

  876. And that's what the angel says.

  877. That's why Jesus is coming into this world

  878. to do what only God can do,

  879. because Jesus is also God.

  880. See, that's why some of you say,

  881. I've heard people say to me, you know,

  882. when I talk to people in coffee shops and stuff like that,

  883. you know, the Bible is so full of contradictions, George.

  884. Like, you know, I was in church, like, last Christmas,

  885. and they say, yeah, and you shall call his name Emmanuel,

  886. and then he named him Jesus.

  887. Like, is there some way in Greek or something

  888. that Jesus and Emmanuel are the same thing?

  889. Like, and then they'll say, you know,

  890. gosh, you religious people and spiritual people can be so annoying.

  891. You don't even notice contradictions, you know?

  892. But just look at it again.

  893. Look at it again.

  894. What does it say?

  895. Verse 21,

  896. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus,

  897. for he will save his people from their sins.

  898. That's the end of the angels thing.

  899. And then Matthew starts speaking.

  900. All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet.

  901. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,

  902. and they shall call his name Emmanuel.

  903. It actually says not that Joseph's going to call him Emmanuel.

  904. Notice that?

  905. It's what people will say.

  906. And what does Emmanuel mean?

  907. It means God with us.

  908. I mean, that's going to be what leads Matthew

  909. to leave making piles of money.

  910. And he would have had to not only,

  911. if he didn't already know,

  912. he probably would have already known Greek and probably Latin,

  913. but he would have gone to Persia,

  914. and he would have been,

  915. probably like good missionaries today,

  916. he would have learned what Persians speak

  917. so he could speak their heart language.

  918. And then he would have been felt,

  919. led by God to leave there

  920. and go to what we now know of as Ethiopia

  921. and to not only speak Greek,

  922. but to learn their heart language,

  923. to tell people that the one God

  924. who created all things,

  925. that God in the person of his Son

  926. came and walked with us,

  927. that he's with us,

  928. that he is not against us,

  929. that he doesn't hate us,

  930. that he hasn't abandoned us,

  931. but that he's with us,

  932. and he came to be with us,

  933. and because he's with us for us,

  934. he died for us.

  935. He died for you in Ethiopia.

  936. He died for you in Persia.

  937. Can you put up the next thing?

  938. Jesus is God with us

  939. to justify, sanctify, and glorify.

  940. Jesus is God with us

  941. to justify,

  942. that sort of theological language for me,

  943. make you and me right with God,

  944. to give us new life,

  945. to be spiritually reborn,

  946. so that we're now God's child.

  947. Sanctify means that he's with us

  948. as we do our day,

  949. to become more holy,

  950. to start to live a life

  951. that's more pleasing to him,

  952. where we don't keep him at a distance,

  953. but we recognize that Jesus

  954. redeems us,

  955. and then we live our lives,

  956. our 24-7 lives with him.

  957. And glorify means

  958. that Jesus,

  959. who comes into our life

  960. to be the Savior,

  961. to reconcile us to God,

  962. and then he walks with us

  963. throughout the life,

  964. and then when we come to the valley

  965. of the shadow of death,

  966. and we enter into death,

  967. that he's the one who glorifies us,

  968. that it's all Jesus.

  969. It's all grace.

  970. It's all something that he does.

  971. And so there's no contradiction here.

  972. There's this just wonderful,

  973. God comes among us

  974. to save us.

  975. He's with us.

  976. He doesn't despise us.

  977. He doesn't hope we fail.

  978. He knows us because he's with us,

  979. and he's with us.

  980. Just one thing now

  981. in closing,

  982. a question to you and me.

  983. Are you brave enough

  984. to be a Christian?

  985. Am I brave enough

  986. to be a Christian?

  987. You know,

  988. the reason many people

  989. don't give their lives

  990. to Jesus,

  991. and if you're here

  992. and you're not a follower of Jesus,

  993. I really don't,

  994. I mean,

  995. you might have lots

  996. of very, very good objections

  997. and questions

  998. and stuff that you need

  999. to be answered,

  1000. and hopefully there's Christians

  1001. in your life

  1002. who are never afraid

  1003. of questions

  1004. and will answer them

  1005. and will love you,

  1006. but you know what?

  1007. It's very countercultural

1008. to say that you're going

  1009. to give your life

  1010. to Jesus,

1011. and a lot of people,

  1012. the problem they have

  1013. in becoming Christians

1014. is they lack the courage

  1015. because they're afraid

  1016. of being mocked.

  1017. Is that you?

  1018. Look what happens

1019. to Joseph in the dream.

  1020. Verse 22,

1021. and all this took place

1022. to fulfill what the Lord

1023. had spoken by the prophet.

  1024. Behold,

  1025. the virgin shall conceive

  1026. and bear a son,

  1027. and they shall call

  1028. his name Emmanuel,

1029. which means God with us.

1030. When Joseph woke from sleep,

1031. he did as the angel

1032. of the Lord commanded him.

  1033. He took his wife,

  1034. but knew her not

1035. until she had given birth

  1036. to a son,

1037. and he called his name Jesus.

  1038. The very way

  1039. that the angel opens

  1040. is in verse 21.

  1041. Joseph, son of David,

  1042. do not fear

1043. to take Mary as your wife.

1044. But often what keeps us

  1045. from giving our lives

1046. to Jesus is we're afraid.

  1047. We're afraid

  1048. of looking

  1049. like we're stupid,

  1050. like we're corny.

  1051. We're afraid

1052. that if we say to somebody,

  1053. I've become a Christian,

  1054. they're going to say,

  1055. oh, are you saved?

  1056. And you're worried

  1057. about how red

  1058. you'd get

  1059. and how embarrassed

  1060. you'd be.

  1061. Jesus died for you.

1062. He will be with you.

1063. And he will be with you

1064. to walk towards your fear.

1065. And just as Joseph found,

1066. even though it didn't necessarily

  1067. make him richer

  1068. or happier,

  1069. definitely didn't make Matthew

  1070. richer or happier,

1071. but it was worth it.

  1072. It was worth it.

  1073. Because Jesus is real.

  1074. He really did die.

  1075. He really did rise

  1076. from the dead.

1077. He really can be the one

1078. to reconcile you to God

  1079. and he really will

1080. do your day with you.

1081. And for those of us

  1082. who are seekers,

  1083. there's nothing you've done

  1084. in your life

  1085. that will make Jesus

  1086. want to turn

1087. his face away from you

1088. because he is with you.

  1089. He loves you.

1090. Give your life to Jesus.

  1091. Don't be afraid.

  1092. And for Christians

  1093. who are here,

1094. for many of us Christians,

  1095. we live in fear.

  1096. We live in fear

1097. that people will find out

1098. that we give our lives

  1099. to Jesus.

  1100. We live in fear

1101. of other types of things

1102. that we have to face

  1103. with economics

1104. or maybe things within us.

  1105. We're very, very fragile

  1106. and we get hurt

  1107. very, very easily.

1108. And this is the profound

  1109. message of the gospel.

1110. You don't have to do

1111. your life on your own strength.

1112. The weight of the world

  1113. is not resting

  1114. on your shoulders.

  1115. Jesus is with you.

1116. He wants to make you

  1117. courageous and brave

  1118. and free

  1119. to walk towards

  1120. those things

1121. that you need to deal with

  1122. because he is Emmanuel.

  1123. He is with you.

  1124. Can you put up

  1125. the final slide, please?

  1126. And could you all

  1127. stand, please?

  1128. This is a form

  1129. of a prayer.

  1130. Lord, please make me

  1131. brave and courageous.

1132. The text is asking us

  1133. to pray this.

1134. God wants you to pray

1135. to be brave and courageous.

1136. If you have not given

  1137. your life to Jesus,

1138. this is a great prayer

1139. to give your life to Jesus.

  1140. To begin by saying,

  1141. Lord, please make me

  1142. brave and courageous.

1143. Make me a disciple of Jesus,

  1144. gripped by the gospel,

  1145. growing in freedom

  1146. and courage

1147. as I live for your glory.

1148. as the gospel grips us,

  1149. as we're aware

  1150. of what Jesus did

  1151. to save us,

1152. it grows freedom in us.

  1153. As we're gripped

  1154. by what Jesus did

1155. for us on the cross,

  1156. it will grow,

  1157. it should grow,

  1158. it will grow courage

  1159. in you

  1160. and a desire

  1161. like Matthew

  1162. to no longer live

  1163. for his own enrichment

  1164. but to be willing

1165. to go to the ends

  1166. of the earth

1167. for the glory of God.

1168. I invite you to pray

1169. it with me in closing.

  1170. Lord,

  1171. please make me

  1172. brave and courageous.

  1173. Make me a disciple

  1174. of Jesus,

  1175. gripped by the gospel,

  1176. growing in freedom

  1177. and courage

1178. as I live for your glory.

  1179. In Jesus' name, amen.

  1180. Father, pour out

1181. your Holy Spirit upon us.

1182. In Jesus' name we pray,

  1183. amen.

  1184. Amen.

  1185. Amen.

  1186. Amen.

  1187. Amen.

  1188. Amen.

  1189. Amen.

  1190. Amen.

  1191. Amen.

  1192. Amen.

  1193. Amen.

  1194. Amen.

  1195. Amen.

  1196. Amen.

  1197. Amen.

  1198. Amen.

  1199. Amen.

  1200. Amen.

  1201. Amen.

  1202. Amen.

  1203. Amen.

  1204. Amen.

  1205. Amen.

  1206. Amen.

  1207. Amen.

  1208. Amen.

  1209. Amen.
