  1. Good morning, Watermark.

  2. That was really good.

  3. I'm impressed.

  4. If you don't know me, my name is Eric.

  5. I'm one of the guys on staff here at Watermark.

  6. It's an awesome privilege to be sharing with you guys today.

  7. If you haven't been with us the past couple months, we've been looking at the book of

  8. Acts.

  9. And what we've seen is that the book of Acts starts out with an angel telling Jesus' followers

  10. that this good news about Jesus is going to spread.

  11. It's going to start out in Jerusalem, which we said is kind of like our Pak Fulon.

  12. And it's going to spread to Judea, which for us is kind of like Hong Kong Island as a whole.

  13. And then it's going to go from there to Samaria, which for us is kind of like Kowloon New Territories.

  14. And then it's going to go to the ends of the earth, which is like Lantau Island.

  15. Sorry, it's the rest, the ends of the earth.

  16. Yes, the ends of the earth.

  17. And the word is going to spread.

  18. And we saw in Acts chapter 2 that the Holy Spirit comes and empowers the church to go

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  19. and spread this message of Jesus.

  20. And God blesses his church.

  21. But the past few weeks, we've seen these cycles of God blessing the church and then the church

  22. facing opposition.

  23. They face opposition from outside and from inside the church.

  24. So from the outside, there have been the Jewish religious leaders come and arrest the apostles

  25. a couple times.

  26. They threaten them.

  27. They've beaten them.

  28. They've told them to stop preaching and teaching about Jesus.

  29. And every time, God has rescued them so far.

  30. And then from inside the church, there was this couple that came and came up with this plan

  31. to lie to the church leaders so that they could get prestige and recognition.

  32. And again, God saved the church from the destructive power that this plan had.

  33. And today, we're going to take a look at another time in the book of Acts when the church faces

  34. opposition.

  35. And what we're going to see is that while conflict within the church needs to be dealt with,

  36. preaching and prayer must remain priorities for God's people even in the midst of conflict.

  37. So let's pray that God would speak to us during this time together.

  38. And then we'll jump in and look at the passage.

  39. Father, we thank you for your word.

  40. We thank you for this chance today to look at your word together, to hear what you have

  41. to say to us.

  42. We thank you that you are powerful and that your word is powerful and gives life to your

  43. people and that you have spoken to us.

  44. And we pray that as we hear your word today, that we would be attentive and that it would

  45. transform us.

  46. And in Jesus' name, amen.

  47. Amen.

  48. So in today's passage, it starts out with a problem.

  49. The problem is the church did this distribution program to care for the widows and the needy.

  50. And there was one group that was being taken care of better than another group.

  51. Division was starting in the church.

  52. And division in the church is a big deal.

  53. Division, more than anything else, has the ability to just split the church in half.

  54. I've been part of a church before where there were divisions that weren't dealt with properly

  55. by church leadership and the church split.

  56. And so in such an early age of this worldwide global church movement, for there to be this

  57. type of division, that is a big deal.

  58. But it's not just any type of division.

  59. See, this is a really big deal because it's ethnic and cultural division.

  60. If you look, it says the two groups are called Hellenists and Hebrews.

  61. Now the Hebrews are the Jews who have been born and raised in Israel.

  62. They speak the language that they speak in Israel.

  63. And they culturally are as Jewish as you can be.

  64. The Hellenists have been born and raised outside of Israel.

  65. They speak Greek.

  66. Some of them ethnically are from a different group than the Israelites and have converted

  67. to Judaism.

  68. So for that part of the Hellenists, it's actually an ethnic difference.

  69. For some of them, they were born Jewish but outside of Israel.

  70. And so they speak the different language.

  71. They have a different culture.

  72. And even though they're the same ethnic group, they're culturally very different.

  73. And so the lines are not just drawn to separate and distinguish people.

  74. The lines are drawn along this ethnic and cultural lines.

  75. And ethnic and cultural division has incredible power to spiral out of control very quickly.

  76. Because in ethnic and cultural division, you're not taking the time to get to know someone.

  77. You're looking at external features about them and making judgments about what type of person

  78. they are based on the color of their skin or the language that they speak.

  79. And in this context, there was great potential for things to spiral out of control very, very quickly within the church.

  80. And so when this problem arises, what does it say happen?

  81. It says a complaint arose.

  82. Now just to give you some context, that's not a good thing.

  83. What this doesn't mean is that people saw a problem and brought it to church leadership.

  84. What it does mean is that they saw a problem and they started talking about it in the background.

  85. The word here that's used for complaint literally means speaking in a low tone of voice or behind-the-scenes talk.

  86. So what it means is people saw the problem in the church, but rather than going and talking to the apostles about it,

  87. they just went up to their friends and they're like,

  88. did you notice how our people aren't being fed like their people are?

  89. And the murmuring and complaining and grumbling got louder and louder and louder

  90. as more and more voices got added to this talking and complaining.

  91. And it got louder and louder until eventually the apostles couldn't help but be aware that something was going on.

  92. Like I said, not an ideal situation.

  93. People saw the problem, simple solution, go to the apostles, tell them, they can deal with it,

  94. and it actually takes less time to deal with the problem than you spend complaining about the problem in the first place, right?

  95. But because the people complained and talked behind the scenes,

  96. it allowed the problem to take on a life of its own.

  97. It allowed people to make assumptions in their hearts about the attitude of leadership towards the people affected.

  98. It allowed people to develop these feelings of anger and bitterness inside their hearts

  99. so that by the time the apostles finally became aware of something that was going on,

  100. the problem had grown way bigger than it ever needed to be.

  101. And this still happens today.

  102. Can you believe it?

  103. It happens in churches, but it also happens in workplaces.

  104. And it happens in schools.

  105. People see a problem and they assume,

  106. well, if I see the problem, then the people in leadership must see the problem as well.

  107. And if they see the problem and the problem's still here because they're not doing anything about it,

  108. it must mean that they don't care.

  109. I've done this several times.

  110. Several might be too small of a number.

  111. You see this issue.

  112. You think the people in charge who have the power to do something about it don't care.

  113. But nothing's happening, so you eventually start to think, maybe it's just me.

  114. So you go to your friend and you're like,

  115. I noticed this.

  116. Did you notice this too?

  117. And your friend's like, yeah, I noticed that too.

  118. And then you start sharing theories with each other about why leadership doesn't care and isn't doing anything.

  119. And once you've confirmed with your friend that it's definitely that the leadership who's responsible for this decision

  120. doesn't care and isn't doing anything because of that,

  121. then it's much easier to go around and talk to other people and be like,

  122. can you believe that this is going on and they just don't care?

  123. And it grows and spreads when all along, actually, the people responsible don't know there's a problem

  124. because they're dealing with other stuff and haven't seen the same issues that you see

  125. and no one's told them that there's a problem.

  126. That's exactly what happens in our world today and it's exactly what happened here with the apostles.

  127. So, all that to say, if you see a problem here in your kid's school, at your workplace,

  128. talk to people, not in a gossipy sort of way,

  129. but the people who have the power to do something to change that problem

  130. and work towards a solution and offer to be part of that solution

  131. instead of just grumbling and complaining.

  132. So, eventually, the voices get louder and the apostles realize something is going on.

  133. And it says that they gathered together the full number of the disciples,

  134. all of the Christians they brought together because everyone is affected by this decision.

  135. And they bring them together to work towards a solution

  136. and they say it is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables.

  137. Now, that seems odd, doesn't it?

  138. The apostles, now remember, let's think about who the apostles are here.

  139. They have spent loads of time studying the Old Testament.

  140. They know that God's word says that the compassion of a community

  141. is going to be judged by how that community cares for the most weak and vulnerable within the community.

  142. Not only that, but these were the guys who were with Jesus

  143. when he said, whatever you do to the least of these, you've done it unto me.

  144. And not only were they there when he said that, but they're the reason that we've heard that he said that.

  145. They're the ones who passed that down to us.

  146. And these guys were the guys who the night before Jesus died,

  147. he grabbed a towel and he got down on his knees and he washed their feet.

  148. And he told them, if I, your Lord and Master, have done this for you, now you go do it for others.

  149. They knew that caring for the poor and vulnerable and serving are crazy important.

  150. So this is not them saying, we're above that type of work.

  151. No, this is something else.

  152. See, it's actually quite likely that up to this point,

  153. the apostles were the main people in charge of this daily distribution.

  154. That makes sense of a lot of things that have happened in Acts.

  155. For example, in Acts chapter 4 and 5,

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  156. it talks about these people who sold their houses and gave the money to the church.

  157. And when they gave the money to the church,

  158. it says they gave the money to the church by coming and laying it at the apostles' feet.

  159. Now, why would you lay the money at the apostles' feet?

  160. Because the apostles are the ones who are turning around to distribute that to the church.

  161. And when a problem arises,

  162. typically the person responsible for that problem is the one who's responsible for finding a solution.

  163. And here, the apostles are the ones tasked with finding a solution.

  164. Which implies that up till this point,

  165. they were the ones who were primarily responsible for this task of this distribution.

  166. So this isn't them saying we're above this kind of work.

  167. They've probably been doing this work all along.

  168. But if that isn't them saying we're above this kind of work, what is it?

  169. Basically, what they're saying is there's a priority to the things that they're doing.

  170. And God has made preaching and prayer their number one priority.

  171. I mean, these are the guys who spent three or four years following Jesus around,

  172. listening to every word that he said.

  173. And God had given them the special task and responsibility of passing those words on to the church.

  174. And they were equipped for this in a way that no one else was.

  175. Yes, other people preached,

  176. but the apostles were equipped and prepared for this in a way that no one else was.

  177. And service is very important.

  178. But the job that needed to be done to serve these tables now had gotten so big

  179. that the apostles could not adequately do this job

  180. and do the job of preaching that God was calling them to.

  181. And so in order to prioritize properly

  182. and focus on the things that God wanted them to focus on

  183. as the number one priority,

  184. they needed to delegate certain roles to different people in the church.

  185. If you're thinking sort of of a modern-day equivalent of this,

  186. imagine that you're a doctor, some of you are,

  187. and you're having a dinner party,

  188. and someone at the dinner party drops a glass on the floor and it shatters.

  189. As the host, you clean up the glass

  190. because not having glass on the floor is important.

  191. But same dinner party,

  192. someone drops a glass because they're having a heart attack

  193. and they collapse to the floor.

  194. If you as the doctor jump up and grab the broom and dustpan

  195. and start sweeping up the glass,

  196. everyone looks at you and says,

  197. what are you doing?

  198. There's a priority here.

  199. You save a life before you clean up broken glass on the floor.

  200. Yes, the broken glass is important,

  201. but anyone at the party can clean up the broken glass.

  202. And you as a doctor have a special gifting and skill

  203. to save a life in this moment.

  204. And the apostles knew that the preaching of God's word

  205. brings spiritual life.

  206. Yes, feeding these widows and serving the tables is vitally important.

  207. But preaching God's word and giving life to God's people

  208. is even more important.

  209. And the serving of the tables

  210. can be done by a lot of people within the church.

  211. And this job of preaching and teaching God's people

  212. to give life to them through God's word

  213. is something that the apostles were specially equipped for,

  214. which is why they needed to prioritize it

  215. even in the midst of this conflict.

  216. So their solution is to find seven men of good character,

  217. full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom,

  218. and appoint them to take over this task.

  219. They find seven guys.

  220. Interestingly, all seven of these guys have Greek names,

  221. which implies that they came from this group

  222. that was feeling excluded and marginalized.

  223. They were the people who would have known specifically

  224. which widows felt neglected

  225. and the best ways to reach them culturally,

  226. which is an interesting insight into dealing with conflicts.

  227. And the problem is never again mentioned in the book of Acts,

  228. which I think means we can pretty reasonably assume

  229. they dealt with it properly,

  230. because problems that aren't dealt with properly come back.

  231. So I want us to take a minute to look at the pattern

  232. for how the apostles dealt with this conflict,

  233. and then spend the rest of our time together today

  234. looking at their priorities in the midst of the conflict.

  235. So first, their pattern.

  236. And their pattern is the gospel.

  237. If we look at the story of the gospel,

  238. what we see is that God creates us

  239. and we owe complete allegiance to him,

  240. and yet we sin and rebel against him.

  241. There's this conflict between us and God.

  242. And God, being God, doesn't look at that conflict

  243. and say, that's it, we're over,

  244. we can never have a relationship again.

  245. But at the same time, he doesn't ignore our sin.

  246. He looks at it and he takes it seriously.

  247. And in the person of Jesus,

  248. he steps down into our world

  249. to get personally involved in our conflict,

  250. to work to bring a solution for us

  251. that we can't bring for ourselves.

  252. And that's the model that God wants us to have

  253. as a church for dealing with conflict.

  254. When we see complaining, when we see grumbling,

  255. when we see problems,

  256. we don't ignore them,

  257. but we also don't blow them out of proportion

  258. and say, that's it,

  259. we can never have a relationship with you again.

  260. But instead, we step in, we engage,

  261. we get involved to help bring a solution

  262. for those who can't bring a solution for themselves.

  263. And that's exactly what the apostles do here

  264. by stepping in, taking charge,

  265. delegating the task so that it will be done properly.

  266. They get involved to bring a solution

  267. for those who cannot bring a solution for themselves.

  268. And that's how God wants us

  269. to approach our conflicts today, I think.

  270. But then, the priorities of the apostles in this passage

  271. are super interesting to me.

  272. Because as someone who works in the church,

  273. I can tell you,

  274. when someone in the church comes to you and says,

  275. I have a problem with something that's happening

  276. within this ministry,

  277. the easy, instinctive reaction

  278. is to jump in and fix it yourself.

  279. As probably most of our tendencies,

  280. when people come to us with problems in our workplaces

  281. or in things that we're responsible for,

  282. we want to jump in, we want to do it ourselves.

  283. We figure things are already messed up,

  284. that's why people are coming to me with a problem.

  285. If I delegate it and it doesn't get properly fixed,

  286. then they're going to be even more upset with me

  287. for not just doing the job right myself.

  288. It's easier to do it right, get it done,

  289. and then we can move on with life.

  290. But that's not what the apostles did here.

  291. They knew that if they did that,

  292. they would be losing sight of the priorities

  293. that God wanted them to have.

  294. And so they delegated the role

  295. because they needed to prioritize preaching and prayer.

  296. And they recognized that if they did the job

  297. of feeding the widows,

  298. they could not prioritize the things

  299. that God wanted them to prioritize.

  300. So I want us to take the rest of our time today

  301. looking at these two priorities,

  302. seeing why they were so important for the apostles then

  303. and why they're so important for us as a church now.

  304. First up, preaching.

  305. Why is preaching important for us as a church?

  306. Preaching is important because God's word is important.

  307. If you do a quick search through the Bible

  308. about the importance of God's word,

  309. it's amazing the things that the Bible tells us

  310. about the power of God's word.

  311. You start out in Genesis chapter one,

  312. start of the Bible, and what happens?

  313. God speaks, and through his word,

  314. everything that exists comes into being.

  315. Fast forward to Isaiah chapter 40,

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  316. and we see the grass withers, the flowers fade,

  317. but the word of God endures forever.

  318. In Ezekiel chapter 37,

    Ezekiel 37 chapter mention

  319. we see that the word of God gives life to God's people.

  320. In Psalm chapter 119 verse 11,

    Psalms 119:11

  321. we see that by learning God's word,

  322. it helps us to fight temptation

  323. and resist sin in our lives.

  324. In John chapter one, Jesus comes to us.

  325. We had this verse on the screen earlier today,

  326. and it says that Jesus is the word of God made flesh.

  327. In Hebrews, I think it's chapter four, verse 12.

  328. Yes, it tells us that the word of God

  329. is living and active, is powerful,

  330. is sharper than a two-edged sword,

  331. and it discerns the thoughts and intentions of our hearts,

  332. that God's word looks at us

  333. and does this deep inspection into our hearts

  334. and shows us the places that we fall short

  335. of being the people that God wants us to be

  336. and what it takes for us to become those people

  337. that God wants us to be.

  338. In 2 Timothy chapter three, verse 16,

  339. Paul tells Timothy that through God's word,

  340. God's people are equipped to become the type of people

  341. that God wants us to be,

  342. that through God's word,

  343. we are equipped for every good work.

  344. And then in the book of Acts,

  345. God's word goes forward through preaching.

  346. It moves from Jerusalem to Judea to Samaria

  347. to the ends of the earth as it is preached.

  348. And this is both Christians growing in their understanding

  349. of who God is and growing deeper

  350. in their relationship with him,

  351. but also non-Christians hearing God's word

  352. as it is spoken publicly

  353. so that they can know him

  354. and come into this life-giving relationship with him.

  355. And so God's word is vitally important

  356. throughout scripture.

  357. And this is just a brief survey,

  358. a brief overview,

  359. but God's word brings life.

  360. If you are here today and you are a Christian,

  361. God's word is vitally important

  362. to your spiritual health.

  363. If you're here today and you're not a Christian,

  364. I encourage you,

  365. keep coming and keep listening

  366. to God's word being preached here every Sunday

  367. because that is how you will discover

  368. spiritual life and a relationship with God.

  369. And preaching is one of the most important ways

  370. that God delivers his word to his people.

  371. Now I know that might be a controversial statement,

  372. like what about reading my Bible?

  373. What about going to community group?

  374. Can't I just do those?

  375. Why do I need to have God's word preached to me?

  376. Well, let's start with reading our Bibles.

  377. First, you should be reading your Bible.

  378. If you think of God's word

  379. as the thing that gives life to God's people,

  380. you can kind of compare it to food.

  381. If you come on Sunday and you eat this massive feast

  382. and then you don't eat again until next Sunday,

  383. you're going to be malnourished.

  384. It doesn't matter how great the meal was on Sunday.

  385. Even if you eat on Sunday

  386. and then on Friday night at your community group,

  387. if you don't eat the rest of the week,

  388. you're still going to be malnourished.

  389. And so we need to be people

  390. who are being fed by God's word every single day.

  391. And to do that,

  392. we need to be reading our Bibles on our own.

  393. And if you're here today

  394. and you don't know how to read your Bible on your own,

  395. I encourage you to talk to me after the service

  396. or talk to your community group after the service,

  397. community group leader after service,

  398. because we would love to teach you

  399. how to read your Bible

  400. so that you can grow closer to God.

  401. However, although it is important to read your Bible on your own,

  402. it's not enough.

  403. Because there is power in God's people coming together

  404. under the teaching of God's word.

  405. And here's what I mean.

  406. When I read my Bible on my own during the week,

  407. that's great.

  408. But when I come to church on Sunday

  409. and I hear God's word preached to me

  410. and I'm sitting listening to the same sermon

  411. as my community group

  412. and my wife

  413. and several other friends,

  414. there's this level of accountability

  415. in responding to God's word

  416. that's greater than the sum total

  417. of each of us individually reading our Bibles on our own.

  418. Because I walk out of here

  419. and I know the sermon that Alfie heard on Sunday

  420. and I know how he was challenged to respond to God

  421. through that sermon.

  422. And he knows how I was challenged to respond to God

  423. through this sermon.

  424. And throughout the week,

  425. we can hold one another accountable

  426. to growing closer to God

  427. because we have that common basis

  428. of having heard God's word preached to us

  429. throughout that week.

  430. Also, hearing sermons together

  431. helps build us into a family

  432. that can encourage one another

  433. and build one another up for Christ

  434. as we're growing and learning

  435. the same things about God together.

  436. And hearing sermons allows us

  437. to have God's word applied to our world today

  438. by people who God has gifted

  439. for the good of the church.

  440. The Bible says that God gifts the church

  441. with people who are able to teach

  442. and preach his word to the church.

  443. So while reading our Bibles on our own

  444. is absolutely important,

  445. it's not a substitute

  446. for hearing God's word preached to us

  447. as a group.

  448. But what about community groups?

  449. That's a group thing, right?

  450. Like there are people in there

  451. who can teach us God's word.

  452. Can't we just do that

  453. instead of having a sermon?

  454. Well, the importance of a sermon

  455. over a community group

  456. is that a sermon forces us

  457. to come under the teaching of God's word.

  458. If you've been in a community group

  459. for any length of time,

  460. there's two experiences

  461. that I'm pretty sure

  462. you've probably had.

  463. The first is when

  464. that person in your group

  465. takes over the whole conversation

  466. and just shares the updates

  467. from the past like six months

  468. of their life.

  469. Anyone been there?

  470. Yep.

  471. And you walk out

  472. and you're like,

  473. I don't think I even like

  474. opened my Bible tonight.

  475. Definitely don't remember if I did.

  476. The other type of community group meeting,

  477. and I think this is probably

  478. the more common one,

  479. is the one where we get so focused

  480. on what we think

  481. that everyone in the group is sharing,

  482. everyone's interacting,

  483. everyone's sharing what they think,

  484. but we're basing it on what we think,

  485. not on what God thinks.

  486. And we walk out of the group

  487. and we're like,

  488. that was great.

  489. I got to share with everyone

  490. what I think.

  491. And then,

  492. but is what I think

  493. the same as what God thinks?

  494. Not really sure.

  495. We didn't look at what God thinks.

  496. And it can be very easy

  497. in the context

  498. of a community group alone

  499. to focus on our thoughts

  500. and our stories

  501. and to actually ignore

  502. looking at God's word

  503. or easy to read briefly

  504. through a passage

  505. but not actually talk about

  506. what that passage means

  507. or how it applies to our lives.

  508. And when we come to a sermon,

  509. if God's word is being preached

  510. from the Bible,

  511. it forces us

  512. to interact directly

  513. with God's word

  514. and with God himself

  515. and respond

  516. to what he is saying

  517. to us.

  518. Now,

  519. I know there are some preachers

  520. who don't preach

  521. from the Bible

  522. and just share fun stories

  523. from their life

  524. to make interesting talks.

  525. And if you hear

  526. one of those sermons,

  527. don't use that

  528. as an argument

  529. against the importance

  530. of preaching.

  531. Rebuke the preacher

  532. because God's word

  533. brings life

  534. to God's people.

  535. And if a preacher

  536. is not preaching

  537. God's word,

  538. that preacher

  539. is robbing God's people

  540. of life-giving sustenance

  541. that is essential

  542. for their growth.

  543. So the proper response

  544. to a preacher

  545. who ignores God's word

  546. is not to discount

  547. the importance

  548. of preaching

  549. but rather

  550. to emphasize it

  551. to that preacher

  552. and call them out

  553. for not preaching

  554. God's word

  555. to God's people.

  556. And community groups

  557. are great,

  558. don't get me wrong.

  559. I think they're wonderful

  560. for helping us

  561. reinforce

  562. what was taught

  563. in the sermon,

  564. for helping us

  565. go deeper

  566. and personalize

  567. the application

  568. to our lives.

  569. But because of the nature

  570. of what community groups are,

  571. they're not a substitute

  572. for hearing God's word

  573. preached

  574. to God's people.

  575. Now, as a millennial

  576. with many millennial friends,

  577. one thing that I hear

  578. quite often is,

  579. I just find it so hard

  580. to focus during a sermon.

  581. Anyone ever heard that?

  582. Yeah?

  583. What if that's me?

  584. What if, you know,

  585. I can really engage

  586. during a community group

  587. because I'm talking

  588. and listening

  589. and interacting

  590. and in a sermon

  591. I'm just like,

  592. he's been up there

  593. for a long time.

  594. Well, first,

  595. if you have trouble

  596. listening during a sermon,

  597. I would challenge you

  598. in terms of the attitude

  599. that you bring

  600. to a sermon

  601. and here's what I mean.

  602. We live in a

  603. very well-educated city

  604. and my guess is that

  605. almost everyone

  606. in this room

  607. has been in a situation

  608. where we have sat

  609. through a lecture

  610. that is long,

  611. way longer than a sermon

  612. and dry

  613. and dull

  614. and boring.

  615. And we've walked

  616. out of that lecture

  617. and memorized

  618. every single last word

  619. the professor said

  620. because we knew

  621. it would be on an exam.

  622. And then we come to church

  623. and we sit in our seat

  624. and we struggle

  625. to stay awake

  626. and play with our phones

  627. and hope that

  628. we magically hear from God.

  629. Do we come ready

  630. to engage with God's word

  631. or do we come expecting

  632. to just magically

  633. have something happen

  634. to us because

  635. we're in the same room

  636. as the place

  637. where God's word

  638. is being taught?

  639. You know,

  640. preaching isn't

  641. a magic formula.

  642. Spiritual growth

  643. doesn't have a magic spell.

  644. It happens

  645. as we get to know God more

  646. and engage in a relationship

  647. with him.

  648. And this

  649. might not be

  650. what some of us

  651. want to hear.

  652. But the primary way

  653. that God has revealed

  654. himself to us

  655. in the 21st century

  656. is through a book.

  657. which means

  658. that if we want

  659. to know God

  660. and we want

  661. to get to know him

  662. fully as he wants

  663. us to know him,

  664. we have to engage

  665. at least a little bit

  666. of the academic side

  667. of our brains

  668. in order to do that.

  669. Which should be fine

  670. because Hong Kong

  671. is great at engaging

  672. the academic side

  673. of our brains,

  674. right?

  675. But we need

  676. to have that side

  677. of our brains

  678. switched on

  679. when we're interacting

  680. with God's word

  681. if we want to fully

  682. hear from him

  683. the way that he wants

  684. us to hear from him.

  685. So I have a couple

  686. tips for helping us

  687. become better

  688. at listening to sermons.

  689. Okay?

  690. And some of you

  691. might think

  692. these are really obvious

  693. and basic

  694. but I guarantee you

  695. there are people

  696. in this room

  697. who if we apply

  698. these things

  699. will get much better

  700. at listening to sermons.

  701. Step number one,

  702. get a good night of sleep.

  703. Like I said,

  704. it's obvious,

  705. it's simple,

  706. but as a single person

  707. there were nights

  708. where I'd get home

  709. at 3 a.m.

  710. the night before church

  711. and show up for church

  712. expecting to hear from God

  713. after hardly sleeping at all.

  714. If we want to hear from God

  715. we need to be able

  716. to stay awake

  717. while his word

  718. is being taught to us.

  719. And so proper preparation

  720. for listening to a sermon

  721. starts the night before

  722. with getting a good night of sleep.

  723. Step number two,

  724. probably equally obvious,

  725. pray for God

  726. to speak to you.

  727. If we believe

  728. that God answers prayer,

  729. how often do we ask him

  730. to speak to us

  731. through the sermon?

  732. Like hopefully we did it

  733. 20 minutes ago

  734. when we all did it together

  735. but other than that,

  736. when was the last time

  737. that you prayed for God

  738. to speak to you

  739. through his word?

  740. It doesn't take long.

  741. Something simple like,

  742. God, I know that this Sunday

  743. I'm going to hear

  744. your word taught

  745. and that your word gives life

  746. and I pray that you would

  747. speak to me through that.

  748. It's quick,

  749. it's simple,

  750. but it's powerful

  751. because God answers prayer

  752. and if we're not asking him

  753. to speak to us

  754. through his word,

  755. then how much

  756. should we really expect

  757. to get out

  758. of hearing his word?

  759. Third,

  760. again,

  761. obvious,

  762. take notes.

  763. By taking notes,

  764. you engage

  765. the tactile senses

  766. and the visual senses

  767. in your learning

  768. which reinforces learning.

  769. Plus,

  770. it gives you something

  771. written down

  772. that you can review

  773. later on

  774. so you can remember

  775. what was said

  776. from God's word.

  777. Again,

  778. very simple

  779. but very powerful

  780. in helping us

  781. to hear from God

  782. when his word

  783. is being preached to us.

  784. Fourth,

  785. engage in active listening.

  786. I think sometimes

  787. we have this attitude

  788. when we come to church

  789. and I've had this before

  790. where we sit down

  791. and we kind of expect

  792. listening to a sermon

  793. to be like watching a sitcom.

  794. Like,

  795. entertain me.

  796. dance.

  797. But that's not

  798. what a sermon is.

  799. The sermon

  800. is God's word

  801. being presented to us

  802. and if we want

  803. to hear from God,

  804. we need to be engaging

  805. with his word

  806. actively

  807. because these

  808. are powerful words

  809. that give life.

  810. So we need to engage

  811. with them

  812. as we hear them.

  813. So as the preacher

  814. is speaking,

  815. ask questions.

  816. You know,

  817. he's saying this.

  818. If that's true,

  819. how should that impact

  820. the way

  821. that I interact

  822. with my friends?

  823. If what he is saying

  824. is true,

  825. how does that connect

  826. to my life?

  827. Think of it not

  828. as a monologue

  829. but as a dialogue

  830. where there's a back and forth

  831. and we're talking

  832. with each other,

  833. thinking through

  834. the ways that God's word

  835. applies to our lives.

  836. And if the preacher

  837. says something

  838. that doesn't make sense to you,

  839. write it down

  840. and ask him about it

  841. after service.

  842. It's actually great.

  843. Preachers should love it

  844. because it means

  845. that you are paying attention

  846. and listening

  847. to what they were saying

  848. and it helps us

  849. think through

  850. and understand

  851. the way that you're hearing

  852. what we're saying

  853. so that next time

  854. we can communicate

  855. more clearly

  856. when we preach.

  857. And final step

  858. for improving

  859. at listening to sermons,

  860. talk about it

  861. with a friend.

  862. Find someone

  863. after service

  864. and say,

  865. here's one big thing

  866. that stuck out to me

  867. from the sermon

  868. and one way

  869. that my life

  870. can be different

  871. this week

  872. because of it.

  873. It's a simple step

  874. but verbalizing it

  875. cements it

  876. in our learning

  877. and forces us

  878. to synthesize it

  879. and process it

  880. to a level

  881. where we can communicate

  882. it with others.

  883. And then it allows us

  884. also to hear

  885. what stuck out

  886. to them from the sermon

  887. so that we can learn

  888. from what they've learned

  889. as well.

  890. See,

  891. God's word

  892. is vitally important.

  893. The preaching

  894. of God's word

  895. is so important

  896. that the apostles said

  897. it's one of the top

  898. two things

  899. we need to spend

  900. our time prioritizing.

  901. And God's word

  902. is important for us today

  903. because God's word

  904. gives life

  905. to God's people.

  906. So we need to,

  907. if we want to be

  908. the people

  909. that God wants us to be,

  910. we need to learn

  911. to engage properly

  912. with his word.

  913. Now the second thing,

  914. I know we're basically

  915. out of time,

  916. but the second thing

  917. the apostles

  918. wanted to prioritize

  919. was prayer.

  920. And just like preaching,

  921. prayer is essential

  922. if we want to be

  923. the people

  924. that God wants us to be.

  925. Last week,

  926. if you were here,

  927. we talked about

  928. how life

  929. is a spiritual war

  930. that is fought

  931. on the turf

  932. of our hearts

  933. for control

  934. of our souls.

  935. And there's a pastor

  936. named John Piper

  937. who says that prayer

  938. in that spiritual war

  939. is the walkie-talkie

  940. to radio into headquarters.

  941. I love that picture

  942. because it shows

  943. the desperation

  944. with which we should

  945. be approaching prayer

  946. in our daily life.

  947. And if we aren't praying,

  948. it means that we're

  949. depriving ourselves

  950. of this valuable resource

  951. that's essential

  952. and necessary

  953. for being the people

  954. that God wants us to be

  955. in this spiritual war

  956. of life.

  957. And I don't want to spend

  958. too long talking

  959. about prayer today

  960. because I actually want

  961. to take some time

  962. together to pray.

  963. But if you're like,

  964. come on, Eric,

  965. you spent all this time

  966. talking about preaching,

  967. I want to know

  968. about prayer too.

  969. I have great news for you.

  970. Starting next Sunday

  971. after service

  972. for the month of July,

  973. Henrika is going to be

  974. running a prayer course.

  975. The details are

  976. in your bulletin

  977. and you can get in touch

  978. with her to sign up

  979. for that

  980. and you'll go way more

  981. in depth into prayer

  982. in that prayer course

  983. than I can go

  984. in five minutes right now.

  985. So if you want to know

  986. more about prayer,

  987. get in touch with Henrika

  988. and sign up for the prayer course.

  989. It's going to be awesome

  990. and it's going to be

  991. a great time

  992. learning how to pray

  993. and getting opportunities

  994. to pray together.

  995. But just to recap

  996. what we've talked about today,

  997. we looked at conflict

  998. in the church.

  999. We looked at the gospel

  1000. as the pattern

  1001. for dealing with conflict

  1002. in the church.

  1003. We talked about priorities

  1004. in the church

  1005. of preaching

  1006. and how to listen

  1007. to a sermon

  1008. and why God's word

  1009. is so important

  1010. for God's people.

  1011. And then we've briefly,

  1012. briefly touched on prayer.

1013. But I want us now

1014. to respond to God's word

  1015. by praying together

  1016. as a church family.

1017. So we're going to put

1018. a passage from the Bible

  1019. up on the screen.

  1020. There it is.

1021. And what we're going to do

1022. is when I say go,

  1023. we're going to split

  1024. into groups

1025. of three to five people

  1026. or so.

1027. And we're going to pray together

  1028. using these verses

  1029. as a prompt.

  1030. Now, if you're like,

  1031. I don't feel comfortable

  1032. praying out loud

1033. or in groups of people,

  1034. that's okay.

1035. You don't need to pray.

  1036. You can just simply

  1037. join the group.

  1038. But I encourage you

1039. to try it at least once.

  1040. If you're someone

  1041. who's more comfortable praying,

  1042. you can pray

  1043. as many times

  1044. as you want.

  1045. But I encourage you

1046. to keep each time short

  1047. so that other people

1048. have a chance to pray too.

1049. And if you're here today

  1050. and you're not a Christian

1051. and you want to know

  1052. more about Christianity

  1053. and what it is

  1054. that we Christians believe,

1055. when we split into groups,

  1056. I encourage you

  1057. to ask the people

  1058. in your group

  1059. more about it

  1060. and they would love

  1061. to share with you.

  1062. So using these verses

  1063. as a prompt,

  1064. we're going to pray.

  1065. So for example,

  1066. how this could work

  1067. is have this mind

  1068. among yourselves

  1069. which is yours

  1070. in Christ Jesus.

  1071. Jesus, we thank you

  1072. for your humility

1073. and we pray that you

  1074. would make us

1075. a humble people as well.

  1076. Or every tongue

  1077. will confess

  1078. that Jesus Christ

  1079. is Lord

  1080. to the glory

  1081. of God the Father.

  1082. Jesus, we praise you

  1083. because you are powerful

  1084. and you are big

  1085. and we thank you

  1086. for your greatness.

  1087. These types of prayers

  1088. inspired by these verses.

  1089. So let's split up

  1090. into groups

1091. and in a few minutes,

  1092. I'll come up

1093. and I will close us

  1094. in prayer.

  1095. Father, we thank you

1096. for your love for us.

  1097. We thank you

  1098. for sending Jesus

  1099. to rescue us.

  1100. We thank you

  1101. that when we were

  1102. far away from you

1103. that you didn't look at us

  1104. and ignore our problem

  1105. but you also didn't

  1106. look at us

  1107. and blow our problem

  1108. out of proportion

1109. and say that's the end of it

  1110. for a relationship

  1111. between us and you

1112. but that you sent Jesus

  1113. to rescue us.

  1114. That you sent Jesus

1115. to give his life for us

  1116. and we pray

  1117. that we would be

  1118. a people who follow

  1119. that pattern,

  1120. who humble ourselves

1121. so that you can exalt us

  1122. rather than exalting ourselves.

1123. We pray that we would be

  1124. people who build

1125. our lives around your word,

  1126. who have proper priorities,

1127. who seek to know you

  1128. and find life

1129. through growing closer to you.

1130. We pray that we'd be

1131. a people who seek you

  1132. in prayer.

1133. We pray that as we do this

1134. that you will build us

  1135. into the people

1136. that you want us to be,

1137. that you will grow in us

  1138. a love for you

1139. and a love for one another

1140. and that you will use us

  1141. to impact our world

  1142. and spread your word

  1143. to those around us.

  1144. Thank you again

  1145. for your love.

  1146. In Jesus' name,

  1147. Amen.
