  1. Welcome back to our service this evening as we continue to look at the book of Daniel and especially we're going to see how the crisis, the personal crisis of King Nebuchadnezzar provides an opportunity for God to receive glorious, his greater power and wisdom this evening.

  2. And I hope that will encourage us as we think about the crises that we face in our lives.

  3. Let me also encourage us from God's word with our call to worship.

  4. Jesus speaking to the crowds in Matthew chapter 11.

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  5. Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

  6. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

  7. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.

  8. May each one of us come to know true rest from Jesus as we find that our lives are connected to him, that we receive strength and love and grace from him.

  9. Now, let's read together from Daniel chapter 2.

    Daniel 2 chapter mention

  10. Now, we're going to read the first 23 verses, but we'll be thinking about the whole chapter together.

  11. So here's Daniel chapter 2 at verse 1.

    Daniel 2 chapter mention

  12. In the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams.

  13. His mind was troubled and he could not sleep.

  14. So the king summoned the magicians, enchanters, sorcerers and astrologers to tell him what he had dreamed.

  15. When they came in and stood before the king, he said to them, I have had a dream that troubles me, and I want to know what it means.

  16. Then the astrologers answered the king, May the king live forever.

  17. Tell your servants the dream and we will interpret it.

  18. The king replied to the astrologers, This is what I have firmly decided.

  19. If you do not tell me what my dream was and interpret it, I will have you cut into pieces and your houses turned into piles of rubble.

  20. But if you tell me the dream and explain it, you will receive from me gifts and rewards and great honour.

  21. So tell me the dream and interpret it for me.

  22. Once more, they replied, Let the king tell his servants the dream and we will interpret it.

  23. Then the king answered, I am certain that you are trying to gain time, because you realise that this is what I have firmly decided.

  24. If you do not tell me the dream, there is only one penalty for you.

  25. You have conspired to tell me misleading and wicked things, hoping the situation will change.

  26. So then, tell me the dream and I will know that you can interpret it for me.

  27. The astrologers answered the king, There is no one on earth who can do what the king asks.

  28. No king, however great and mighty, has ever asked such a thing of any magician or enchanter or astrologer.

  29. What the king asks is too difficult.

  30. No one can reveal it to the king except the gods.

  31. And they do not live among humans.

  32. This made the king so angry and furious that he ordered the execution of all the wise men of Babylon.

  33. So the decree was issued to put the wise men to death.

  34. And men were sent to look for Daniel and his friends to put them to death.

  35. When Ariach, the commander of the king's guard, had gone out to put to death the wise men of Babylon,

  36. Daniel spoke to him with wisdom and tact.

  37. He asked the king's officer, Why did the king issue such a harsh decree?

  38. Ariach then explained the matter to Daniel.

  39. At this, Daniel went in to the king and asked for time so that he might interpret the dream for him.

  40. Then Daniel returned to his house and explained the matter to his friends Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah.

  41. He urged them to plead for mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery,

  42. so that he and his friends might not be executed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.

  43. During the night, the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision.

  44. Then Daniel praised the God of heaven and said,

  45. I thank and praise you, God of my ancestors.

  46. You have given me wisdom and power.

  47. You have made known to me what we asked of you.

  48. You have made known to us the dream of the king.

  49. So Daniel chapter 2, we're going to see one king's crisis reveals the true king's glory.

    Daniel 2 chapter mention

  50. And again, I really hope that this encourages us today.

  51. Because we stand as a world in need of hope, don't we?

  52. We're together in this global crisis.

  53. And we really feel especially a sense of concern for those who are seeking to lead us through it.

  54. We're praying for wisdom for our politicians and our leaders.

  55. But I think too, we probably recognise, especially perhaps in the church,

  56. that we need more than simply a timetable for ending lockdown to give us a hope that lasts.

  57. We need something bigger than a plan for economic recovery.

  58. We need more than simply a return to normal.

  59. What we need is a hope that comes from the word of God and the God of the word.

  60. For us as Christians, for the people of God, we have great hope.

  61. Even in this chapter, we've been reminded that the Lord who sits on the throne of the universe,

  62. loves his people, he loves us.

  63. That the almighty Lord has not stayed distant from us, rather he has revealed himself to us.

  64. And we see him in creation.

  65. And we see him in his word.

  66. And especially in Jesus, the word who became flesh and made his dwelling among us

  67. so that we would see the glory of God in the face of Jesus.

  68. And we understand that the Lord is building his church.

  69. He is establishing a kingdom that is extensive, that is enduring, that is eternal, that is hope.

  70. And we see it all in Daniel chapter 2.

    Daniel 2 chapter mention

  71. So my prayer for you and for me, for all of us this evening,

  72. is that we take hope as we behold our God.

  73. But we begin with the king's personal crisis in the first 11 verses.

  74. Dreams are funny things, aren't they?

  75. Some are very vivid, some are just plain bizarre, some are quite unsettling.

  76. Some, the first thing when you wake up, you want to share it with somebody else.

  77. Others, you're trying to grab hold of the details because you know there was something exciting or interesting

  78. you want to share and you can't quite get there.

  79. Well, Nebuchadnezzar, he has a forgotten dream.

  80. And effectively, he says to his advisors, tell me my dream and what it means and I'll make you rich and give you glory or I'll burn your house down.

  81. It's very extreme for a forgotten dream.

  82. Why?

  83. Well, in his culture, dreams were often regarded as signs pointing towards the future.

  84. But for Nebuchadnezzar, he can't remember this dream.

  85. He doesn't know whether his future looks good or whether his future looks bad.

  86. So he calls in the gurus of verse 2, the magicians, enchanters, sorcerers and astrologers.

  87. So the interesting thing about these guys is that they used dream manuals.

  88. So, OK, tell us your dream.

  89. Ah, OK.

  90. So like 150 years ago, another king, he had a dream that was similar.

  91. And if you look at his history, these events happened.

  92. So I think the dream means this.

  93. That's how it worked for them.

  94. But if they get no knowledge, they get no hope.

  95. And they're honest about that.

  96. Verse 10.

  97. There is no one on earth who can do what the king asks.

  98. I love verse 11.

  99. God's always looking for opportunities to reveal his glory.

  100. And don't we see here, verse 11, what the king asks is too difficult.

  101. No one can reveal it to the king except the gods and they do not live among the humans.

  102. Their experience of the gods, the false gods of Babylon, our gods are distant.

  103. Our gods don't speak.

  104. Our gods are not going to be able to offer any help.

  105. We can't help.

  106. So there's no prospect of help.

  107. In this crisis, a contest is going to develop.

  108. A contest because it's so one-sided.

  109. But we're being invited to ask the question, whose wisdom is greater?

  110. The wise men or Daniel and the gods of Babylon or the true God

  111. that they represent?

  112. Whose God is the true God?

  113. And chapter 2 of Daniel, the whole story of Daniel, really,

  114. and indeed the whole Bible shows,

  115. for the one true God, nothing is impossible.

  116. The one true God is a God who reveals himself.

  117. He speaks.

  118. He speaks.

  119. He acts.

  120. He demonstrates his saving power and grace towards his people.

  121. He is available for them.

  122. And of course for us, we know that in Jesus he becomes one of us

  123. and we see his glory in their most remarkable way.

  124. I also find it encouraging to recognise that in God's providence,

  125. the crisis of the king becomes a chance for Daniel to do gospel ministry,

  126. to speak the truth to King Nebuchadnezzar,

  127. and to show where true glory and honour lies,

  128. to point to the power and wisdom of the one true God

  129. rather than the false gods.

  130. God is working.

  131. God is always working for his glory.

  132. He is still looking to, as it were, lift the roof off,

  133. to remind people to look up,

  134. to show the limits of the gods that we make

  135. compared to the one true God.

  136. And so maybe even here there is an encouragement for us

  137. in our gospel ministry.

  138. No crisis quarantines the gospel.

  139. I find it really encouraging this week to read about the church in Iran.

  140. So Iran, which is part of where the Babylonian Empire would be,

  141. the people who are still around today,

  142. and in Iran, the church is persecuted.

  143. The church is under attack.

  144. It faces a crisis.

  145. But they have learned to do effective gospel ministry.

  146. They've used technology.

  147. So there are many stories of people going on to Facebook

  148. and finding Christian groups

  149. that they can sensitively connect with

  150. and have their questions asked and answered

  151. and people coming to faith in Jesus

  152. through the internet and through social media.

  153. And I think that's an encouragement for us

  154. as we think about our ongoing ministry

  155. of looking to show our friends, our neighbours, our colleagues

  156. the wonder of Jesus.

  157. That's the king's personal crisis.

  158. And that, of course, then leads us on to Daniel's response.

  159. So if you remember, if you were with us last week,

  160. Daniel's crisis of conscience,

  161. would he eat the king's diet or not?

  162. This is a more significant crisis for Daniel

  163. in terms of his life or death

  164. because Daniel and his three friends

  165. are told in verse 13

  166. that they are also on the king's death list,

  167. part of his royal advisors.

  168. So they're all due to be killed.

  169. Now, how do we see Daniel's faith in this crisis?

  170. Well, first of all, we see that he keeps calm.

  171. He goes to speak to Ariah,

  172. who's responsible for bringing the message.

  173. And then in verse 16,

  174. he goes to face the angry king Nebuchadnezzar

  175. to ask for more time.

  176. And God gives him favour

  177. and he gets the chance for more time.

  178. And what does he do with his time?

  179. And this is what his faith really shines.

  180. He prays.

  181. He calls his three friends and say,

  182. let's pray, let's pray for God's mercy.

  183. So verse 18,

  184. he urged them to plead for mercy

  185. from the God of heaven

  186. concerning this mystery

  187. so that he and his friends

  188. might not be executed

  189. with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.

  190. He's concerned not just for himself,

  191. but for everybody else

  192. that's part of the death list.

  193. But what does he pray for?

  194. He prays that the true God

  195. would reveal the mystery to Daniel.

  196. Daniel.

  197. And that night,

  198. the answer comes.

  199. And again,

  200. how does Daniel respond in the morning?

  201. In verse 19,

  202. we're told that he praised God.

  203. When we pray and God answers,

  204. we should be thankful.

  205. We should pray to him

  206. and we should give him thanks.

  207. We should praise him.

  208. And then Daniel gives us a reminder of that.

  209. And as we look at Daniel's prayer,

  210. what does he focus on?

  211. He praises God

  212. because God is on the throne.

  213. Because God sits over all history,

  214. deposing some kings,

  215. raising others up.

  216. Because God has wisdom and power.

  217. But not only that,

  218. this God who has wisdom and power,

  219. verse 23,

  220. I thank and praise you,

  221. God of my ancestors,

  222. you have given me wisdom and power.

  223. God who makes himself available

  224. for the needs of his people.

  225. God who gives that wisdom and power to Daniel

  226. when he needs it.

  227. So again,

  228. the crisis is showing really powerfully

  229. the true God versus counterfeit gods.

  230. And maybe today,

  231. you're sitting at home

  232. and you realise,

  233. do you know,

  234. I've been planning

  235. and been pursuing goals

  236. without really thinking about God.

  237. I'm not sure that he would really be

  238. the centre of my identity.

  239. Perhaps you're thinking,

  240. I need more than this.

  241. I need more than those foundations

  242. that I had built my life on

  243. before this crisis.

  244. I see that they are weak

  245. and God is strong.

  246. Well,

  247. here is an invitation

  248. to turn

  249. or return to God

  250. through faith in Jesus.

  251. To recognise that he is

  252. the one who is powerful for you,

  253. who will be your strength and weakness.

  254. To recognise that he is all wisdom

  255. and he can be your wisdom

  256. in times of confusion.

  257. So turn to him,

  258. return to him

  259. with all your heart

  260. and keep pursuing Jesus

  261. who is the wisdom of God,

  262. who is the power of God.

  263. Read your Bible,

  264. pray to enjoy fellowship with him,

  265. make him your treasure

  266. and delight.

  267. Because we have the one true God

  268. revealed to us in the Bible

  269. and revealed to us in Jesus,

  270. the Son.

  271. And we need to trust him

  272. to have a hope that lasts.

  273. After praising God,

  274. Daniel then

  275. goes to the king's court.

  276. So he gives the king his dream

  277. and its meaning in verse 25

  278. to 45.

  279. And what we see here again

  280. is more parallels

  281. to the story of Joseph.

  282. Another king,

  283. the Pharaoh,

  284. had a dream.

  285. Nobody could interpret it

  286. except for Joseph.

  287. Joseph is brought in,

  288. it reveals the dream

  289. and he has raised

  290. a place of honour.

  291. Same story for Daniel.

  292. And again also,

  293. when the king speaks to Daniel

  294. at first and he says,

  295. are you able to tell me

  296. what I saw in my dream

  297. and interpret?

  298. Daniel obviously,

  299. like Joseph,

  300. had the chance to claim

  301. some personal glory

  302. and honour for himself,

  303. but doesn't take it.

  304. Rather,

  305. he honours God.

  306. No wise man,

  307. enchanter,

  308. magician or diviner

  309. can explain to the king

  310. the mystery,

  311. but there is a God

  312. in heaven

  313. who reveals mystery.

  314. You want revelation?

  315. You want wisdom?

  316. Don't look to me,

  317. Daniel says.

  318. Look to my God.

  319. There is no contest

  320. in this wisdom contest.

  321. The true God

  322. is the only one

  323. who reveals mysteries.

  324. And perhaps Nebuchadnezzar

  325. was so anxious

  326. because he really wanted

  327. to hold on to power.

  328. Perhaps he was afraid

  329. and wondering

  330. whether his latest conquest

  331. would succeed.

  332. And what he needs

  333. to understand

  334. is that the answer

  335. to his anxiety

  336. and the answer

  337. to all our anxieties

  338. is to recognise

  339. there is a greater king.

  340. There is one

  341. far greater than him.

  342. Maybe one of the struggles

  343. that you have

  344. with lockdown

  345. is that sense

  346. of loss of control

  347. where we want

  348. to know the plan

  349. and we want

  350. to know the timetable

  351. and we want

  352. to know it will

  353. be successful

  354. because we want

  355. to make our own plans

  356. and we want

  357. to know what our timetable

  358. is going to look like

  359. and it can be desperately

  360. hard to live

  361. day by day

  362. when every day

  363. feels the same

  364. and it seems

  365. there's no end

  366. in sight.

  367. Well,

  368. one answer to

  369. that anxiety

  370. is certainly

  371. to behold

  372. our God.

  373. to recognise

  374. here is the God

  375. who's in control.

  376. Here is the God

  377. who is working

  378. all things for good

  379. for those who love him.

  380. Here is the God

  381. whose love

  382. for his people

  383. remains constant

  384. and in a crisis

  385. he has wisdom

  386. and power

  387. that is for you.

  388. Now we get to the dream.

  389. Let me read this.

  390. We didn't read it earlier.

  391. Let me read

  392. the dream.

  393. Your majesty

  394. looked

  395. and there before

  396. you stood

  397. a large statue

  398. an enormous

  399. dazzling statue

  400. awesome in appearance.

  401. The head of the statue

  402. was made of pure gold

  403. its chest

  404. and arms of silver

  405. its belly

  406. and thighs of bronze

  407. its legs of iron

  408. its feet partly of iron

  409. and partly of baked clay.

  410. While you were watching

  411. a rock was cut out

  412. but not by human hands.

  413. It struck the statue

  414. on its feet

  415. of iron and clay

  416. and smashed them

  417. and then we're told

  418. the rock

  419. that struck the statue

  420. became a huge mountain

  421. and filled

  422. the whole earth.

  423. So there's this statue

  424. with four levels

  425. and it's top heavy

  426. because the top level

  427. is made in gold

  428. but it doesn't topple

  429. in and of itself

  430. rather it is smashed

  431. by a rock

  432. a rock

  433. not cut by human hands

  434. and that rock

  435. then becomes

  436. a universal

  437. mountain.

  438. So what's

  439. going on

  440. in that dream?

  441. well Nebuchadnezzar

  442. is told

  443. in verse 37

  444. that he was

  445. the head

  446. of gold

  447. you are the king

  448. of kings

  449. the God of heaven

  450. has given you

  451. a dominion

  452. and power

  453. and glory

  454. God has given it

  455. to Nebuchadnezzar

  456. but as the dream

  457. makes clear

  458. that will not last

  459. his empire

  460. will not last

  461. neither will

  462. the other empires

  463. there is one

  464. that will last

  465. and that's God's

  466. verse 44

  467. in the time

  468. of those kings

  469. the God of heaven

  470. will set up a kingdom

  471. that will never

  472. be destroyed

  473. nor will it be left

  474. to another people

  475. it will crush

  476. all those kingdoms

  477. and bring them

  478. to an end

  479. but it will

  480. itself endure

  481. forever

  482. this is the meaning

  483. of the vision

  484. of the rock

  485. cut out of a mountain

  486. but not

  487. by human hands

  488. God will set up

  489. his kingdom

  490. and that kingdom

  491. will never end

  492. that kingdom

  493. will never be

  494. overtaken

  495. that kingdom

  496. will not be small

  497. but will be universal

  498. in scope

  499. and that kingdom

  500. will be built

  501. on God's rock

  502. and the New Testament

  503. picks that up

  504. and says

  505. the rock

  506. is Christ

  507. for the exiles

  508. in Daniel's generation

  509. and for those

  510. in later generations

  511. who suffer persecution

  512. and opposition

  513. there is hope

  514. this will not last

  515. God's king

  516. and God's kingdom

  517. will

  518. the Messiah

  519. of the line of David

  520. would come

  521. as promised

  522. and his kingdom

  523. would endure

  524. so hold on

  525. and take heart

  526. for the persecuted

  527. church in the world

  528. today

  529. for the persecuted

  530. church in the region

  531. of Babylon

  532. here is hope

  533. that to trust

  534. in Jesus

  535. as God's king

  536. is to place

  537. our hope

  538. and identity

  539. and security

  540. in a kingdom

  541. that is eternal

  542. and enduring

  543. for you and me

  544. today

  545. here is living hope

  546. because the rock

  547. is Christ

  548. Jesus came

  549. and he preached

  550. the kingdom

  551. of God

  552. is near

  553. because he

  554. is the king

  555. who is drawn near

  556. those miracles

  557. that we spent

  558. so much time

  559. focusing on

  560. are signs of

  561. signpost to

  562. the kingdom

  563. of glory

  564. a kingdom

  565. without illness

  566. and suffering

  567. and death

  568. and disease

  569. and virus

  570. and despair

  571. a kingdom

  572. marked by love

  573. and joy

  574. and peace

  575. and fellowship

  576. with God

  577. forever

  578. and then there's

  579. the promise

  580. of Jesus

  581. that he would

  582. build his church

  583. on the gates

  584. of hell

  585. no opposition

  586. no foreign empire

  587. would ever be able

  588. to destroy

  589. that church

  590. and that church

  591. would be built

  592. on his words

  593. the gospel message

  594. the message

  595. that comes from

  596. Jesus

  597. and that's about

  598. Jesus

  599. that centres on

  600. his death

  601. and resurrection

  602. is where

  603. the foundation

  604. of the church

  605. the kingdom

  606. of God

  607. the eternal

  608. extensive

  609. enduring kingdom

  610. is built

  611. for you and I

  612. when we don't know

  613. what institutions

  614. in our country

  615. will survive

  616. what savings

  617. will be left

  618. in our bank

  619. accounts

  620. what shape

  621. our nation

  622. will be in

  623. here is

  624. encouragement

  625. to invest

  626. our energy

  627. and find

  628. our joy

  629. in a kingdom

  630. that lasts

  631. to live as a

  632. citizen of heaven

  633. even as we seek

  634. the welfare

  635. of Babylon

  636. as we seek

  637. the welfare

  638. of Edinburgh

  639. and Scotland

  640. and beyond

  641. our hope

  642. lies in

  643. an eternal

  644. enduring

  645. extensive

  646. kingdom

  647. when our

  648. hope

  649. is in

  650. Jesus

  651. the eternal

  652. son of God

  653. our king

  654. and our saviour

  655. the chapter

  656. ends with

  657. the king's

  658. gratitude

  659. it's no surprise

  660. really that he's

  661. so pleased

  662. he discovers

  663. that he's the

  664. head of gold

  665. and he's going

  666. to have a

  667. secure and

  668. glorious empire

  669. for his

  670. lifetime

  671. and what he

  672. does

  673. verse 46

  674. to 49

  675. is he

  676. praises

  677. Daniel

  678. and he

  679. raises him

  680. to a place

  681. of honour

  682. again

  683. just like

  684. Pharaoh

  685. did with

  686. Joseph

  687. and what

  688. we need

  689. to understand

  690. is that

  691. God is

  692. behind all

  693. of this

  694. God is

  695. working

  696. so that

  697. his glory

  698. will be

  699. seen

  700. even in

  701. the suffering

  702. of exile

  703. God is

  704. working so

  705. he will

  706. have glory

  707. among the

  708. nations of

  709. the world

  710. even in

  711. this king's

  712. personal

  713. crisis

  714. God is

  715. working

  716. so that

  717. he will

  718. have

  719. glory

  720. God's

  721. desire

  722. is that

  723. he would

  724. be glorified

  725. we are

  726. made

  727. to give

  728. God glory

  729. to live

  730. for his

  731. glory

  732. so we

  733. find our

  734. great joy

  735. when we

  736. see

  737. and delight

  738. in the

  739. glory of

  740. God

  741. and books

  742. like Daniel

  743. can really

  744. help us

  745. to see

  746. that

  747. so that

  748. we might

  749. praise God

  750. just as

  751. Daniel

  752. did

  753. and it's

  754. interesting

  755. we said

  756. this in

  757. our overview

  758. and we'll

  759. see it

  760. time and

  761. again

  762. here is

  763. king

  764. nebuchadnezzar

  765. a pagan

  766. king

  767. praising

  768. Daniel's

  769. God

  770. verse 47

  771. the king

  772. said to

  773. Daniel

  774. surely

  775. your God

  776. is the

  777. God of

  778. gods

  779. and the

  780. Lord of

  781. kings

  782. and a

  783. revealer

  784. of

  785. mysteries

  786. a pagan

  787. king is

  788. used to

  789. speak the

  790. truth

  791. probably

  792. speaking

  793. more truth

  794. than he

  795. realised

  796. but here

  797. is that

  798. reminder

  799. in the

  800. context

  801. of the

  802. gods

  803. only one

  804. God

  805. has true

  806. and absolute

  807. power

  808. only one

  809. God

  810. has wisdom

  811. and graciously

  812. reveals

  813. who is

  814. available

  815. to us

  816. who is

  817. strong

  818. and mighty

  819. to save

  820. so this

  821. king's

  822. crisis

  823. in the

  824. end of

  825. the day

  826. led him

  827. to praise

  828. give glory

  829. to the

  830. true king

  831. may

  832. may that

  833. be true

  834. for us

  835. whoever we

  836. are and

  837. whatever our

  838. circumstances

  839. however we're

  840. finding

  841. lockdown

  842. may it

  843. be true

  844. for us

  845. that this

  846. crisis would

  847. lead us

  848. to praise

  849. to trust

  850. to show

  851. loyalty and

  852. dependence on

  853. our God

  854. and king

  855. on Jesus

  856. our king

  857. that we

  858. would look

  859. to him

  860. the wisdom

  861. of God

  862. the power

  863. of God

  864. that in

  865. our weakness

  866. with our

  867. burdens

  868. we would

  869. come to

  870. him

  871. and find

  872. rest

  873. so that we

  874. might

  875. just like

  876. Daniel

  877. give God

  878. praise

  879. and glory

  880. a

  881. day

  882. he

  883. he

  884. he

  885. he

  886. he

  887. he

  888. he

  889. he
