  1. We've just finished up, I gather, a series in the book of Acts, looking at how Jesus sends his people out on mission.

  2. And this mission is really what defines the church.

  3. And it's what we're kind of, we're to be part of this mission to go and reach out into the world and to just build these communities which are living in this transformational way which just shows this light to the people around us.

  4. But one of the things that I have realized as I've reflected on this kind of big story that we're part of as a church is that often in the day-to-day of life, I kind of get distracted.

  5. Anyone else like me?

  6. I kind of get sidetracked from that big story because there are little decisions, there are things which happen in my day-to-day which actually affect the direction that I'm going in.

  7. But it's the day-to-day stuff that just wraps me up.

  8. And so we're looking at this kind of series in wisdom because wisdom here is going to be looking at the choices and the forks in the road that we have in our everyday lives and the nitty-gritty of life to see how when we make wise choices in these things like money and relationships and career and plans and all these different things,

  9. that these things are what shape our vision of the bigger picture that we're in and the direction we're going in.

  10. So for the next eight weeks, we're going to be looking in the book of Proverbs and looking at different topics and looking at wisdom in different areas.

  11. So we're just going to kind of intro that a little bit today and then we're going to go on this journey over the summer.

  12. Okay?

  13. Good.

  14. Let me just pray for us before we dive in.

  15. Father, thank you for giving us breath today.

  16. Thank you that today was a day that you made.

  17. And it's a day that you have brought us here, not just to be here because this is what we always do, but it's a day because we want to hear your word and you want to speak to us.

  18. And I pray, Lord, give us tender, soft hearts to hear what you want to say.

  19. I pray, Lord, that your spirit would speak through my words.

  20. Remove what you don't want to say and let people hear like a megaphone what you do want them to hear.

  21. Let us live in the light of your word.

  22. In Jesus' name.

  23. Amen.

  24. Great.

  25. What I want to do to start off with is I want to do a little kind of trivia quiz for us.

  26. Okay?

  27. So are you ready?

  28. So I'm going to give you some choices.

  29. Okay?

  30. I want some responses.

  31. This is kind of audience participation.

  32. Okay?

  33. I know we're lower on numbers because it's the sum of it.

  34. That doesn't mean you get a pass.

  35. Okay.

  36. Here's your first choice.

  37. Would you prefer to have intelligence or good looks?

  38. Come on.

  39. There's no sitting on the fence here.

  40. No sitting on the fence.

  41. Good looks.

  42. There you go.

  43. I'm sure you've already got them.

  44. Okay.

  45. Next one.

  46. A penthouse flat or a luxury yacht.

  47. Oh, okay.

  48. Nobody's into the sea.

  49. Okay.

  50. Next one.

  51. A trip to the moon or unlimited beach days.

  52. Okay.

  53. You guys are safe here.

  54. You kind of, okay.

  55. Private chef.

  56. That's Gordon Ramsay for you.

  57. A professional trainer.

  58. There's a bit of competition here.

  59. Okay.

  60. Next one.

  61. A hundred million dollars.

  62. Or wisdom.

  63. There's one honest man in the congregation.

  64. Because you see, though you might not have exactly all those choices every day, the choices

  65. that you make reflect what you think is most valuable in life.

  66. Right?

  67. What you think will secure your greatest happiness is what will determine and shape the choices

  68. that every day you are making.

  69. See, if you think your money or career or intelligence or education will make you happiest in life,

  70. then that's what's going to consume the whole of your direction in life.

  71. It will shape all of your choices.

  72. But when we come to looking at the book of Proverbs, we're looking at a book which is a collection of collections of sayings of wise people,

  73. the most significant of whom is King Solomon.

  74. And if you know who King Solomon is, he was the wisest king in the world.

  75. And the kind of backdrop to the story about King Solomon is that his dad, the greatest king that Israel had ever had, King David, has died.

  76. King Solomon takes the throne as a young man.

  77. And God comes to him in a dream and says, ask me for anything you want.

  78. You know, he has that choice of all of those different things.

  79. And Solomon says, without a blink of an eye, he says, give me wisdom.

  80. Give me wisdom.

  81. Give me wisdom more than anything else.

  82. Give me wisdom.

  83. And God says, you have chosen wisely.

  84. Because you see, he knows that if I got that $100 million, I could still be a fool and squander it all.

  85. But if I have wisdom, I have something which is going to be shaping everything in my life.

  86. And so the book of Proverbs, basically, is going to come to us and it's going to say, with a question, it's going to say, what do you want in your life?

  87. What is most valuable in your life?

  88. What's the destination that you want to go into?

  89. Because here now, it is a father talking to a son and he's going to say, hey, listen, this is the destination.

  90. Are you going to listen to me?

  91. Are you going to hear where I want you to go?

  92. And so Proverbs 8, verse 1 to 5.

    Proverbs 8:1–5

  93. Do have your bulletin open.

  94. I'm going to kind of refer to it during this morning.

  95. Proverbs 8, 1 to 5.

  96. It says, wisdom, wisdom, does not wisdom call?

  97. Okay, does not understanding raise her voice on the heights beside the way.

  98. And then it says, at the crossroads, she takes her stand beside the gates in front of the town.

  99. At the entrance of the portals, she cries aloud.

  100. Basically, this passage starts off at the busy intersection of a city.

  101. And here is wisdom on the heights where people are going along their way, choosing the lifestyles they want to live.

  102. It's beside the gates of the crossroads of the city where decisions, whether you're going to go left or whether you're going to go right, are being made.

  103. It's right at the gates of the city, of the town, where all the buying and selling and the trading and the political judgments and the work decisions are being made.

  104. Choices everywhere.

  105. Okay, big choices.

  106. Who do I marry?

  107. What job do I take?

  108. What profile picture do I put on Facebook?

  109. Or smaller, everyday choices, like, do I shout at my kids or say nothing?

  110. Do I make that phone call or do I let it be?

  111. Do I pursue that relationship, that school, or do I wait?

  112. All these choices you and I face every single day.

  113. And this is the context where he's saying you're at the crossroads of these choices.

  114. And right in the midst of all the noise, of all the voices which are coming from your friends and your family and your colleagues and the media and everything around you, wisdom calls.

  115. And wisdom is personified as this kind of beautiful, noble woman.

  116. And she says, calling out to you and me, she says, listen to my voice.

  117. Hear, listen to me.

  118. Verse 10, take my instruction instead of silver and knowledge rather than choice gold.

  119. For wisdom is better than jewels.

  120. And all that you desire, all that you desire cannot compare with her.

  121. That's a pretty big statement.

  122. Advertising sells you products on the basis of your greatest desires and fantasies and promises to fulfill them.

  123. Have you seen these adverts like, get this deodorant and suddenly you'll become irresistibly attractive to the opposite sex?

  124. Have you seen those kind of adverts?

  125. And, you know, we believe it because we buy it.

  126. Right?

  127. And that's how advertising works.

  128. And we also believe the advertising which plays to the different kind of fantasies that we have about what makes us happy.

  129. Like, if I just had well-behaved children, then my life would be happy.

  130. If I just had a boyfriend, then life would be wonderful.

  131. And we get this kind of wisdom from everywhere else.

  132. And when the Bible comes and brings this call of wisdom that is different from all the other wisdoms that you'll hear around,

  133. sometimes we can think it sounds like a very sensible Christian middle-aged aunt who is so sensible that she'd never do anything exciting at all in her life.

  134. She just sounds a little bit boring, sometimes we think, when we think about biblical wisdom.

  135. But Proverbs here, it's very clever the way he does it.

  136. Proverbs is us listening into this father and his son talking to each other.

  137. And do you know what?

  138. In chapter 9, his father says to his son, basically he says,

  139. Wisdom isn't your dull aunt who wouldn't even get a tattoo because she's not that fun.

  140. Wisdom is a hot lady who's a great chef.

  141. That's what he says.

  142. Wisdom is a hot lady who's a great chef.

  143. And why does he do that?

  144. Because he's talking to a teenage son, okay?

  145. And he's playing to the desires that he has.

  146. And if you translate that into any of your fantasies, any of the things that you think will make you happy,

  147. he's saying, listen, if you want anything that's going to satisfy what you're chasing after, get wisdom.

  148. That's what he's saying.

  149. And he's appealing to our desires.

  150. So, Proverbs, we're going to go on this journey together about getting wisdom.

  151. Proverbs.

  152. Proverbs.

  153. Just to orient you a little bit, Proverbs comes out of four.

  154. There are four wisdom books in the Bible, in the Hebrew Bible.

  155. Job, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs, and Proverbs.

  156. And basically, they're like a package deal together.

  157. They're kind of all different threads, which if you take them together,

  158. they form a tapestry of what life is like.

  159. And you need to read them together.

  160. But the way Proverbs works is Proverbs is basically quite a lot of one-liners and catchy phrases

  161. which kind of encapsulate a truth, okay?

  162. So, we understand the idea of Proverbs and things like that.

  163. Maybe let's just have a look.

  164. Here are some modern kind of, okay, modern pictorial versions of Proverbs.

  165. Proverbs, okay?

  166. Learning from the wise.

  167. Okay?

  168. It's a kid with a son, with his dad teaching him how to use a computer.

  169. Next one.

  170. Smart communication isn't always the smartest communication.

  171. Okay?

  172. It's a catchy phrase, but you get the idea, right?

  173. Next one.

  174. The most valuable thing handed down the generation's togetherness.

  175. Okay?

  176. You get the idea?

  177. The way to a dad's heart is through his stomach.

  178. Okay?

  179. You get the idea.

  180. We have these ideas of Proverbs in the world, right?

  181. Collective wisdom.

  182. Was there another one?

  183. I think that was it.

  184. Oh, yes.

  185. Okay.

  186. What goes around comes around.

  187. Okay?

  188. These are Proverbs that we understand the concepts,

  189. but they're giving us not everything about the topic,

  190. but they're giving you something that's memorable for you to chew on.

  191. Okay?

  192. So what we're going to look at,

  193. these wisdoms have come through observation,

  194. experience of what works in life.

  195. So we're going to look at this idea of wisdom through three things.

  196. We're going to look at the meaning of wisdom,

  197. the way to wisdom,

  198. and the call of wisdom.

  199. Okay?

  200. The meaning of wisdom,

  201. the way to wisdom,

  202. and the call of wisdom.

  203. Okay.

  204. So if you look through the passage,

  205. you will keep hearing that the passage just keeps talking about wisdom.

  206. But what is wisdom?

  207. Okay?

  208. Let's tell you what wisdom isn't first.

  209. Wisdom is not intelligence or education.

  210. In Hong Kong,

  211. we prize education.

  212. We might say,

  213. take education instead of silver.

  214. Okay?

  215. Instead of our money.

  216. Because education will get more silver eventually.

  217. Some of us think the most valuable thing you can give to your children is education.

  218. Now, education is important,

  219. but Proverbs says that's not true.

  220. Education is not the most important thing.

  221. Going to a seminary doesn't teach you actually how to be a pastor.

  222. You could have a ton of PhDs and not know how to do life at all.

  223. Right?

  224. The most brilliant,

  225. well-read,

  226. intelligent people I know,

  227. some of them have train wreck in their relationships.

  228. Some of them just have no idea,

  229. how to do relationships.

  230. But they're smart.

  231. And Proverbs would say,

  232. wisdom is not just education or intelligence.

  233. It's also not just morality.

  234. Okay?

  235. Wisdom is intrinsically connected to doing and acting in a right way.

  236. In a right way which fits in the way God has ordered the world.

  237. But it's far more than just right or wrong.

  238. You know,

  239. in England in the 1650s,

  240. it's very interesting.

  241. They thought that if we get the most moral people

  242. in the country together

  243. and we make them into the parliament,

  244. then the country would just run amazingly.

  245. So they did this.

  246. It's called the bare bones parliament.

  247. And can you imagine what happened?

  248. They got all these kind of very moral people

  249. and put them in the parliament.

  250. And it was a disaster.

  251. Because morality is not the same as wisdom.

  252. And wisdom is not going to,

  253. morality is not the only way that you can learn to live life.

  254. The Bible word for wisdom is the word chokmah.

  255. Okay?

  256. Can you say that?

  257. Chokmah.

  258. It's like you're clearing your throat.

  259. Okay?

  260. That's the only bit of Hebrew I'm going to give you.

  261. Okay?

  262. Chokmah.

  263. Okay?

  264. In Exodus,

  265. it's applied to those who've got the skill

  266. of crafting wood and crafting silver and gold.

  267. It's the skill of knowing how to do something well.

  268. And in the Bible,

  269. it's not just,

  270. you know,

  271. you could have the skill of,

  272. if you know how to do a successful business,

  273. you have business chokmah.

  274. Okay?

  275. You've got the skill of doing it well.

  276. But in the Bible,

  277. it's more than just doing something with a bit of know-how.

  278. It's actually knowing how to do relationships.

  279. It's knowing,

  280. it's the skill of living well in God's world

  281. and in relationships,

  282. doing relationships well with God,

  283. with your family,

  284. and with the people around you.

  285. That's what chokmah is.

  286. It's in the complexity of life

  287. where, you know,

  288. so much is not black and white.

  289. So much of life is just gray.

  290. Right?

  291. Isn't so much just gray

  292. where you don't know the way to go.

  293. And chokmah is the way of taking biblical truth

  294. and applying it into your life in a way

  295. which helps you to live in the marketplace.

  296. of life.

  297. You know,

  298. it's,

  299. I've had many of these decisions

  300. where I don't know,

  301. I have two choices

  302. and both of them seem okay.

  303. You know,

  304. when Fiona and I,

  305. when Fiona and I wanted to get married,

  306. Fiona's parents refused.

  307. What do you do

  308. in that situation?

  309. Honor your father and mother

  310. is a biblical command.

  311. Don't be a slave to the fear of men

  312. is another biblical command.

  313. Two things.

  314. They both seem right.

  315. What do you do?

  316. What do I need?

  317. Google it?

  318. No.

  319. I need chokmah.

  320. I need wisdom.

  321. It's the same as if you have,

  322. you know,

  323. you've got a kid who's rebellious,

  324. rebelling against your authority.

  325. Two different things.

  326. Do you need love and grace and forgiveness?

  327. Or do you need discipline and justice?

  328. Both of them are good things.

  329. What do you do?

  330. Chokmah.

  331. You need it.

  332. And so it's the way

  333. of getting knowledge

  334. so you understand the way

  335. things generally work in the world.

  336. It's seeing your present situation clearly

  337. and it's having a strategy

  338. for knowing how to navigate the gray

  339. all in God's world

  340. so that you can do relationships right.

  341. That is chokmah.

  342. But I find in the issue of guidance,

  343. many people come to me

  344. and I think we have a wrong view

  345. of how God guides in life.

  346. Okay?

  347. I have many people say,

  348. I want to know what God's will for my life is.

  349. How do I know if this job

  350. is God's will for my life?

  351. You know, we're very afraid

  352. of getting it wrong.

  353. You know, if we make something wrong,

  354. we think of life like a doorway.

  355. You know, the journey of life

  356. is a door rather than a path.

  357. And so what we have

  358. is if I choose the wrong door,

  359. then I'm afraid I'm going to screw up

  360. the rest of my life

  361. and I go through the wrong one

  362. and I go, oh, I should have chosen the other one

  363. and we're going to miss out.

  364. That's how we feel in life often.

  365. And so you have like door A, B, C

  366. in front of you.

  367. You know, it could be three jobs.

  368. And I have people come to me and say,

  369. what job does God want me to take?

  370. And I'll say to them,

  371. well, are any of them terrorism?

  372. And they say, no, generally.

  373. Kidnapping, drug smuggling.

  374. And they say, okay, no.

  375. If the answer is yes,

  376. we might have to chat about it.

  377. But they say,

  378. but I want to know what God wants.

  379. And I say, well, it's not here a moral choice.

  380. It's not a sin issue.

  381. It's a wisdom issue.

  382. It's a chokmah issue.

  383. But we struggle with this, I think,

  384. because we like to have the idea

  385. of a kind of a door which you just open

  386. and that's the way you go.

  387. And God to kind of give a little pointy finger

  388. just saying it's that door.

  389. And, you know, we want an instant solution.

  390. We want an instant solution.

  391. You know, 10 steps to raising your kids.

  392. This is how,

  393. you look at the how-to manuals outside.

  394. It's all like, okay,

  395. follow these 10 steps

  396. and boom, the door will open.

  397. Right?

  398. Five ways to a better body.

  399. Okay?

  400. Six ways to greater intelligence.

  401. All those different things.

  402. That's what we like.

  403. And so we have Christian versions of those as well.

  404. We say things like,

  405. just pray and get some peace.

  406. And if you have peace,

  407. then that's the way forward.

  408. Now, prayer is essential as part of this.

  409. Because we've got to depend on God.

  410. Sense of peace is good.

  411. But, you know, in the Bible,

  412. Saul had a great sense of peace

  413. when he was having Christians martyred.

  414. Right?

  415. Right?

  416. And I've heard people come to me

  417. who've said,

  418. I've prayed about joining a church

  419. and I just didn't have peace about it

  420. so I didn't join a church.

  421. And I'm going,

  422. okay,

  423. sounds like you're listening to yourself there.

  424. You're not listening to God.

  425. Right?

  426. Or other people will say,

  427. okay,

  428. follow the open doors.

  429. Now, sometimes that's a good idea.

  430. But, you know,

  431. Jonah in the Bible

  432. got an open door

  433. to run away from God

  434. to go to Tarshish.

  435. You know,

  436. he goes to the ship ticket office

  437. and he says,

  438. hey,

  439. are there any tickets for Tarshish?

  440. And they say,

  441. yes, there are.

  442. And he says,

  443. wow,

  444. it's a sign,

  445. an open door.

  446. Really?

  447. You know,

  448. I've had doors which seem to open

  449. and suddenly they were slammed in my face

  450. and then I thought,

  451. God,

  452. what are you playing at?

  453. I thought that was you.

  454. Right?

  455. And we get confused.

  456. Anyone been there?

  457. Another one is like,

  458. the Holy Spirit told me.

  459. Now,

  460. I believe very strongly

  461. that the Spirit does

  462. and has in my life

  463. prompted me in numerous ways.

  464. We're going to talk about this later,

  465. later in the year.

  466. But,

  467. I believe God uses our intuitions

  468. to guide us.

  469. But here's a very important thing

  470. we need to be careful of.

  471. Don't ascribe your gut

  472. the same authority

  473. as God's Word.

  474. Okay?

  475. Because I had a guy who was,

  476. he was convinced

  477. the Holy Spirit

  478. had told him

  479. to be a worship music leader.

  480. Okay?

  481. And you know what the Holy Spirit tells you?

  482. You can't argue with that.

  483. Right?

  484. You can't argue with anyone

  485. who says,

  486. God told me.

  487. It's like,

  488. okay.

  489. So,

  490. he goes to the worship music practice

  491. and let me just tell you,

  492. if the Holy Spirit

  493. had called him,

  494. he had called him

  495. as a sign of judgment

  496. on whoever he was going to sing to.

  497. Because he lacked chokmah.

  498. But this is some of the ways

  499. that we misunderstand

  500. how God wants us

  501. to operate in the world.

  502. We want a plug and play formula.

  503. Life is more complex than that.

  504. And God is more relational

  505. than just dishing out

  506. a kind of how-to guide.

  507. God wants a relationship with you

  508. and in a relationship,

  509. chokmah comes.

  510. So let's come

  511. to look at,

  512. that's what chokmah is.

  513. Chokmah is the skill

  514. of living well

  515. in a complex world

  516. to know how to do relationships well

  517. and it's in God's world.

  518. Let me say,

  519. how do we get wisdom?

  520. How do we get this chokmah?

  521. The way to wisdom.

  522. Okay?

  523. That's point two.

  524. If you want to just show,

  525. there are many ways

  526. that people think

  527. about getting wisdom.

  528. Confucius said this,

  529. three methods we may learn wisdom.

  530. First, by reflection.

  531. Second, imitation.

  532. And third, by experience.

  533. There is some wisdom in that.

  534. There is some wisdom in that.

  535. And we could talk about

  536. many of those different things

  537. and the Bible would agree

  538. with some of those areas.

  539. But the Bible and Proverbs

  540. is going to tell us

  541. there's something

  542. that Confucius has missed out

  543. in his definition.

  544. And Confucius has missed out

  545. what in chapter 9, verse 10,

  546. the book of Proverbs says

  547. is the beginning of wisdom.

  548. It says,

  549. The fear of the Lord

  550. is the beginning of wisdom

  551. and knowledge of the Holy One

  552. is insight.

  553. The fear of the Lord

  554. is the beginning of wisdom

  555. and knowledge of the Holy One

  556. is insight.

  557. That's weird.

  558. Right?

  559. Just think how weird that is.

  560. The fear of Yahweh

  561. is the beginning of wisdom.

  562. Because we think fear is bad.

  563. Right?

  564. Generally.

  565. But what Proverbs

  566. and what the Bible shows us

  567. there are two types of fear

  568. you can have.

  569. The first type of fear

  570. comes when you

  571. when you fear

  572. that you've messed up

  573. and your boss

  574. is going to shout at you.

  575. You're going to get punished

  576. for something.

  577. Have a look at this verse

  578. that Moses says.

  579. Exodus 20.

  580. Okay?

  581. God showed himself

  582. to the mountain

  583. to sinful people

  584. at Mount Sinai.

  585. They pull back terrified

  586. and Moses says

  587. and they say to Moses

  588. don't let God speak

  589. or we'll die.

  590. And then

  591. Moses says this

  592. do not fear

  593. for God has come

  594. to test you

  595. that the fear of him

  596. may be before you

  597. that you may not sin.

  598. Do you see?

  599. He says

  600. do not fear

  601. that you may fear.

  602. Do you get that?

  603. Two types of fear

  604. that he's talking about.

  605. The first is that fear

  606. the negative fear

  607. of punishment

  608. that brings many people

  609. including many of us

  610. to church

  611. to try and be very moral

  612. because we're worried

  613. that maybe

  614. if we don't do the right thing

  615. then God is going to smite us.

  616. Right?

  617. That's often the motivation

  618. for much religion

  619. that we do.

  620. But that's not

  621. what he's talking about here.

  622. There's another kind of fear.

  623. That's the fear

  624. that the fear of him

  625. may be in you.

  626. And have a look

  627. at the next verse.

  628. The next verse

  629. from Nehemiah.

  630. From Nehemiah

  631. he says this

  632. he says

  633. O Lord God of heaven

  634. the great and awesome God

  635. let your ear

  636. be attentive

  637. to the prayer

  638. of your servant

  639. to the prayer

  640. of your servants

  641. who delight

  642. who delight

  643. to fear your name.

  644. Who delight

  645. to fear your name.

  646. You see

  647. there's something

  648. awesomely terrifying

  649. about God.

  650. If you actually

  651. think about

  652. someone who can create

  653. the whole universe

  654. that is pretty

  655. terrifying.

  656. But there's something

  657. that if you run

  658. to him

  659. the fear of him

  660. drives out

  661. all other fears.

  662. You can care

  663. less about

  664. what other people

  665. think

  666. because you care

  667. more about

  668. what he thinks.

  669. You see

  670. there's delight

  671. and there's fear

  672. together.

  673. There's love

  674. and there's fear

  675. because there's beauty

  676. and greatness

  677. together in God.

  678. And what you love

  679. most

  680. is what you also

  681. fear hurting

  682. or losing

  683. or disappointing

  684. the most.

  685. I mean it's a bit

  686. like if you've

  687. got a kid

  688. who Taylor Swift

  689. is like they're

  690. obsessed with

  691. Taylor Swift.

  692. Okay.

  693. And you suddenly

  694. they're walking

  695. down the street

  696. and they spot

  697. Taylor Swift

  698. in the corner

  699. like just standing

  700. there.

  701. Now what emotions

  702. fill them?

  703. What's going

  704. through their mind?

  705. There's this mix

  706. of love

  707. and excitement

  708. and wanting

  709. to run up

  710. and say hi.

  711. But then there's

  712. also this mix

  713. of this fear

  714. and awe

  715. that someone

  716. who's so great

  717. in their eyes

  718. kind of comes

  719. before you

  720. and you're worried

  721. that you might

  722. say something stupid.

  723. You might do

  724. something stupid.

  725. You might say

  726. something which

  727. will lessen

  728. the greatness

  729. in which

  730. the presence

  731. you're in.

  732. And it's this sense

  733. of an awe-filled

  734. love for God

  735. that leaves you

  736. trembling before him

  737. but wanting to

  738. attract it

  739. and wanting

  740. to run to him.

  741. Because we realize

  742. that God is God

  743. and I am not.

  744. Do you know that?

  745. God is God

  746. and you are not.

  747. And so the fear

  748. of the Lord

  749. is my definition.

  750. It's when I treasure

  751. God in his beauty

  752. and awesome majesty

  753. so much so

  754. that I do not want

  755. to do anything

  756. to displease him.

  757. To treasure him

  758. so much

  759. that I don't want

  760. to, every day

  761. I'm going out

  762. I don't want to put

  763. anything else

  764. before you.

  765. I don't want

  766. anyone else

  767. to come before you

  768. because that's

  769. idolatry.

  770. I don't want that.

  771. I want to treasure

  772. you before anything

  773. else.

  774. Now that kind of

  775. fear sets you

  776. free from

  777. everyone else's

  778. opinion.

  779. It sets you free

  780. from caring too much

  781. about what you

  782. think about yourself

  783. and you think

  784. about things.

  785. You know so often

  786. I have been in

  787. so many arguments

  788. where I'm trying

  789. to prove myself

  790. to be right

  791. even though I know

  792. that I'm wrong

  793. because I just

  794. have to be right.

  795. Because I think

  796. more of myself

  797. and my opinion

  798. than other people.

  799. But fools

  800. think they know

  801. best.

  802. Fools think

  803. they know best.

  804. Do you notice

  805. in chapter 8

  806. 13

  807. the fear of the

  808. Lord

  809. is the hatred

  810. of evil

  811. and then the

  812. first thing on the

  813. list is pride.

  814. Okay.

  815. First thing on the

  816. list is pride.

  817. And what is pride?

  818. What's pride?

  819. Pride is thinking

  820. you know best.

  821. Pride is thinking

  822. you know best.

  823. And I mean

  824. just think about it.

  825. Just take dating

  826. for example.

  827. Take dating.

  828. Some of us

  829. because we think

  830. we know best

  831. some of us

  832. are so picky

  833. we won't date

  834. anyone unless

  835. they're perfect

  836. for you.

  837. Right.

  838. Unless you know

  839. according to your

  840. criteria and in

  841. your mind

  842. that makes sense.

  843. and so you

  844. complain about

  845. the lack of guys

  846. and the lack

  847. of girls here

  848. but you're

  849. passing out

  850. perfectly good

  851. godly guys

  852. and godly girls

  853. because you're

  854. looking for

  855. Scarlett Johansson

  856. or you're looking

  857. for somebody

  858. who's going to

  859. buy you

  860. able to have

  861. the financial

  862. ability to

  863. buy you a

  864. flat on the

  865. peak.

  866. And

  867. that's foolish.

  868. That's not

  869. the real world.

  870. That's idolatry

  871. even.

  872. And the fear

  873. of the Lord

  874. sets you free

  875. from elevating

  876. your criteria

  877. and this

  878. idolatry of

  879. perfection

  880. and what you

  881. think

  882. above

  883. because you

  884. think that's

  885. what's going

  886. to satisfy

  887. you

  888. above

  889. fearing God

  890. and allowing

  891. him to then

  892. shape the

  893. reality of

  894. your world.

  895. And seeing

  896. that just

  897. frees you

  898. to actually

  899. see clearly

  900. and not

  901. stupidly.

  902. You know

  903. other people

  904. you'll date

  905. anyone

  906. whether they

  907. love Jesus

  908. or not.

  909. And you

  910. know you

  911. say well

  912. there's no

  913. rule in the

  914. Bible that

  915. says about

  916. don't date

  917. and don't

  918. Christian.

  919. And it's

  920. true.

  921. Dating was

  922. invented in

  923. the 20th

  924. century.

  925. That's why

  926. it's not

  927. in the

  928. Bible.

  929. But if

  930. you have

  931. the fear

  932. of the

  933. Lord

  934. which is

  935. a command

  936. you don't

  937. want to

  938. date anyone

  939. who doesn't

  940. love Jesus

  941. because you

  942. don't want

  943. to go

  944. anywhere near

  945. there's

  946. something

  947. which will

  948. draw you

  949. away from

  950. you.

  951. Draw you

  952. away from

  953. loving Jesus

  954. because you

  955. treasure him

  956. more than

  957. anything else.

  958. That's the

  959. fear of

  960. the Lord.

  961. And you

  962. know that

  963. counts of

  964. whether somebody

  965. is a

  966. non-Christian

  967. that counts

  968. as somebody

  969. whether says

  970. they're a

  971. Christian but

  972. isn't living

  973. a life that's

  974. following him.

  975. And you

  976. know it'll

  977. save you so

  978. much regret

  979. and heartache

  980. later from

  981. making foolish

  982. decisions.

  983. The fear of

  984. the Lord is

  985. the beginning

  986. of wisdom.

  987. How do you

  988. grow and

  989. get that

  990. wisdom?

  991. That wisdom

  992. is a

  993. lifetime

  994. journey of

  995. getting in

  996. God's word

  997. allowing it

  998. to shape

  999. your life

  1000. allowing it

  1001. to shape

  1002. your character

  1003. and allowing

  1004. wisdom to

  1005. be the lens

  1006. through which

  1007. every sign

  1008. of peace

  1009. every sign

  1010. of open

  1011. door

  1012. every sense

  1013. of intuition

  1014. everything else

  1015. is shaped

  1016. through that

  1017. door.

  1018. because sinful

  1019. people like

  1020. you and

  1021. me we

  1022. mess up

  1023. continually

  1024. we continually

  1025. turn left

  1026. instead of

  1027. right but

  1028. we should

  1029. only we

  1030. often should

  1031. have that

  1032. negative fear

  1033. of God but

  1034. we can only

  1035. have that

  1036. positive fear

  1037. of God when

  1038. you realize

  1039. that in

  1040. God's word

  1041. he speaks

  1042. this word of

  1043. the gospel

  1044. it says there's

  1045. now no

  1046. condemnation for

  1047. those in

  1048. Christ Jesus

  1049. which means

  1050. you can be

  1051. free from

  1052. the negative

  1053. fear

  1054. to be free

  1055. to love

  1056. and fear

  1057. him because

  1058. you realize

  1059. your identity

  1060. is no longer

  1061. at stake

  1062. what others

  1063. think about

  1064. you is no

  1065. longer the

  1066. key thing

  1067. what he

  1068. thinks about

  1069. you is the

  1070. main thing

  1071. in your

  1072. life

  1073. that's why

  1074. let's do

  1075. one more

  1076. thing

  1077. that's why

  1078. if we want

  1079. to be a

  1080. wise community

  1081. we need to

  1082. be an

  1083. awe-filled

  1084. community

  1085. and to be

  1086. an awe-filled

  1087. community

  1088. we need to

  1089. be a

  1090. bible-soaked

  1091. community

  1092. because it's

  1093. as we get

  1094. in God's

  1095. word that we

  1096. get to know

  1097. who God

  1098. is

  1099. and then as

  1100. we rehearse

  1101. that with

  1102. each other

  1103. that is going

  1104. to guide us

  1105. and lead us

  1106. in the paths

  1107. of life

  1108. that we keep

  1109. coming to

  1110. the crossroads

  1111. of life

  1112. but it's not

  1113. just a fear

  1114. of God

  1115. this way

  1116. there's also

  1117. this sense

  1118. of if you're

  1119. a fool

  1120. you believe

  1121. you know

  1122. best

  1123. and so you

  1124. don't involve

  1125. others in

  1126. your decisions

  1127. but if you

  1128. notice

  1129. proverbs 9

    Proverbs 9:8

  1130. verse 8

  1131. says

  1132. don't reprove

  1133. a scoffer

  1134. or he'll

  1135. hate you

  1136. reprove

  1137. that means

  1138. correct

  1139. a wise man

  1140. and he will

  1141. love you

  1142. give instruction

  1143. to a wiser man

  1144. and he will

  1145. still be wiser

  1146. what is he saying

  1147. he's saying

  1148. wisdom is also

  1149. a community

  1150. experience

  1151. do you get that

  1152. it's a community

  1153. experience

  1154. it's people

  1155. growing together

  1156. teaching each

  1157. other

  1158. and walking

  1159. along

  1160. together

  1161. as they

  1162. walk in

  1163. the fear

  1164. of God

  1165. together

  1166. because God

  1167. the fear

  1168. of God

  1169. gives you

  1170. a teachable

  1171. humble spirit

  1172. to realize

  1173. that you

  1174. don't know

  1175. all the answers

  1176. do you know

  1177. people who think

  1178. they know

  1179. all the answers

  1180. they're some

  1181. of the most

  1182. foolish people

  1183. there are

  1184. do you know

  1185. why I know

  1186. this because

  1187. this is very

  1188. personal for me

  1189. I had a mental

  1190. breakdown

  1191. because I

  1192. thought I knew

  1193. better than

  1194. anybody else

  1195. and I

  1196. wouldn't go

  1197. to other

  1198. people for

  1199. wisdom

  1200. and I

  1201. still see

  1202. that tendency

  1203. for independence

  1204. in my life

  1205. and this is

  1206. the challenging

  1207. part that to

  1208. be part of a

  1209. community

  1210. who loves

  1211. Jesus

  1212. is not to

  1213. just live our

  1214. lives independently

  1215. and then come to

  1216. church on a Sunday

  1217. and think we just

  1218. praise God

  1219. and then we go

  1220. away and make

  1221. all the decisions

  1222. by ourselves

  1223. but at the

  1224. significant forks

  1225. in your road

  1226. in your life

  1227. Proverbs is

  1228. telling you

  1229. if you want

  1230. to be wise

  1231. you will bring

  1232. the counsel

  1233. of other people

  1234. godly people

  1235. not just anybody

  1236. not just anybody

  1237. but godly people

  1238. into your life

  1239. you know

  1240. it's things like

  1241. do we have the

  1242. humility and the

  1243. teachability to say

  1244. things like

  1245. hey I'm fighting

  1246. with my spouse

  1247. every day

  1248. and I don't know

  1249. how to deal

  1250. with this

  1251. could you help

  1252. me

  1253. could you walk

  1254. with me

  1255. through this

  1256. are we humble

  1257. enough to be

  1258. open enough

  1259. with somebody

  1260. in this church

  1261. to do that

  1262. it's the things

  1263. of saying

  1264. I'm struggling

  1265. with same

  1266. sex attraction

  1267. I'm struggling

  1268. with thoughts

  1269. about somebody

  1270. else who is

  1271. not my spouse

  1272. and I don't

  1273. know how to

  1274. handle it

  1275. will you

  1276. walk with me

  1277. in this

  1278. guide me

  1279. because so

  1280. many of us

  1281. are actually

  1282. fools

  1283. like so

  1284. often I

  1285. am

  1286. because we

  1287. think we

  1288. know best

  1289. that's why

  1290. we don't ask

  1291. other people

  1292. godly people

  1293. for wisdom

  1294. in our world

  1295. and in our

  1296. crossroads of

  1297. life

  1298. and you've

  1299. got a thousand

  1300. other people

  1301. who are speaking

  1302. to you at the

  1303. crossroads of

  1304. your life

  1305. and the choices

  1306. that you have

  1307. right even now

  1308. and the point

  1309. is where are

  1310. you going

  1311. for wisdom

  1312. do you go

  1313. to God's

  1314. word

  1315. do you go

  1316. to other

  1317. godly people

  1318. or are you

  1319. just trying

  1320. to figure out

  1321. your own way

  1322. by yourself

  1323. and he's

  1324. saying you're

  1325. a fool

  1326. if you do

  1327. that

  1328. you'll be

  1329. a fool

  1330. you realize

  1331. that's one

  1332. of the reasons

  1333. why in the

  1334. church we

  1335. don't just

  1336. want to

  1337. segregate

  1338. married people

  1339. over here

  1340. single people

  1341. over here

  1342. because if

  1343. single people

  1344. get together

  1345. and they're

  1346. just together

  1347. do you know

  1348. what and

  1349. they're talking

  1350. about relationships

  1351. relationships

  1352. it's pulling

  1353. ignorance

  1354. together

  1355. right

  1356. how much

  1357. better is

  1358. it if you

  1359. have somebody

  1360. who's been

  1361. through that

  1362. and has

  1363. walked with

  1364. God

  1365. and you can

  1366. draw on their

  1367. wisdom to bring

  1368. help along those

  1369. crossroads so you

  1370. don't keep turning

  1371. left when you

  1372. should be turning

  1373. right

  1374. it's the same

  1375. with those of

  1376. you who are

  1377. older

  1378. are you involved

  1379. in the lives

  1380. of other people

  1381. so that

  1382. there can be

  1383. an impartation

  1384. of what God

  1385. has imparted

  1386. into you

  1387. and to somebody

  1388. else

  1389. and be careful

  1390. it's not that

  1391. you are now

  1392. the old sage

  1393. wise one

  1394. who just

  1395. dumps advice

  1396. on people

  1397. because humble

  1398. wise people

  1399. are teachable

  1400. and know the

  1401. limits of their

  1402. wisdom

  1403. but you walk

  1404. alongside other

  1405. people together

  1406. that's how a

  1407. community becomes

  1408. wise

  1409. and our society

  1410. is so filled

  1411. with individualism

  1412. and independence

  1413. that we've

  1414. forgotten

  1415. the collective

  1416. wisdom of people

  1417. who've walked

  1418. with God

  1419. together here

  1420. in this

  1421. community

  1422. so wisdom

  1423. it's the skill

  1424. of living well

  1425. in the complexity

  1426. of life

  1427. we need the

  1428. fear of God

  1429. treasuring him

  1430. above everything

  1431. else through his

  1432. word in community

  1433. very final thing

  1434. it's the call

  1435. of wisdom

  1436. the call of wisdom

  1437. I don't know if

  1438. you noticed

  1439. in verse

  1440. well in the

  1441. beginning of

  1442. verse 8

  1443. chapter 8

  1444. and the beginning

  1445. of chapter 9

  1446. who is wisdom

  1447. talking to

  1448. do you notice

  1449. he's calling out

  1450. to the simple

  1451. and to fools

  1452. did you see that

  1453. he's calling out

  1454. simple and the fools

  1455. the simple

  1456. are people who

  1457. are easily

  1458. persuaded

  1459. and just

  1460. easily

  1461. choose the wrong

  1462. direction

  1463. fools are those

  1464. who have already

  1465. taken the wrong

  1466. term and just

  1467. believe in their

  1468. own lives

  1469. but it says

  1470. whoever

  1471. 9 verse 4

  1472. says

  1473. whoever is

  1474. simple

  1475. let him turn

  1476. in here

  1477. verse 6

  1478. says

  1479. leave your

  1480. simple ways

  1481. and live

  1482. right now

  1483. in your world

  1484. I don't know

  1485. what's going on

  1486. in your world

  1487. but right now

  1488. in your world

  1489. wisdom is

  1490. calling out

  1491. to you

  1492. and isn't

  1493. that grace

  1494. think about it

  1495. you could have

  1496. been

  1497. I don't know

  1498. what you've been

  1499. doing in your life

  1500. but I know me

  1501. and I know

  1502. probably you

  1503. are all like me

  1504. that you've been

  1505. turning left

1506. a lot of the time

  1507. in your life

  1508. you know we turn

  1509. left to head

  1510. towards foolish town

  1511. we're at the

  1512. crossroads

  1513. the GPS of wisdom

  1514. is telling us

  1515. to go right

  1516. but we've gone

  1517. left

  1518. that voice in

  1519. your conscience

  1520. has said

  1521. hold your tongue

  1522. that voice in

  1523. your conscience

  1524. has been saying

  1525. don't dwell on

  1526. that thought

  1527. about that

  1528. woman

  1529. or that guy

  1530. that voice

  1531. has been telling

  1532. you spend time

  1533. in God's word

  1534. pick up your phone

  1535. to your dad

1536. even though he hurt you

  1537. that voice has been

  1538. telling you that

  1539. it's been telling you

  1540. to go right

  1541. and you've been

  1542. going left

  1543. deliberately

  1544. deliberately

  1545. and it may be

  1546. you've been turning

1547. left for a long time

  1548. maybe you're

  1549. you're kind of

  1550. you've gone to

  1551. foolish town

  1552. and you're now like

  1553. you've got a nice

  1554. bed and breakfast

  1555. there and you've

  1556. settled down

  1557. you've been there

  1558. for a long time

  1559. making foolish

  1560. choices

  1561. but the amazing

  1562. thing of grace

  1563. is that wisdom

  1564. is still calling

  1565. out to you today

  1566. and saying

  1567. it's not too late

  1568. though you have

  1569. turned left

  1570. today is a day

  1571. where you can now

  1572. turn right

  1573. and listen to me

  1574. the call of wisdom

  1575. goes out to you

  1576. today

  1577. and says

  1578. come

  1579. come eat

  1580. of my bread

  1581. drink of my wine

  1582. I've got a banquet

  1583. for you

  1584. I've got a feast

  1585. for you

  1586. I've got my love

  1587. for you

  1588. I've got my grace

  1589. for you

  1590. today you can eat

  1591. of the satisfaction

  1592. of saying no

  1593. to your porn habit

  1594. to say yes

  1595. to the freedom

  1596. from shame

  1597. today

  1598. the word turn

  1599. it says

  1600. it's what Jesus says

  1601. it's the word repent

  1602. it's the same word

1603. and when the New Testament

  1604. says the idea

  1605. of wisdom

  1606. do you know

  1607. what it says

  1608. it's not talking

  1609. just an idea

  1610. in the mind

  1611. it's not talking

  1612. a concept

  1613. it's not just

  1614. nice advice

  1615. when the New Testament

  1616. says wisdom

  1617. it says it's talking

  1618. about a person

  1619. it's talking

  1620. about Jesus Christ

  1621. 1 Corinthians

  1622. says

  1623. God chose

  1624. the foolish

  1625. in the world

  1626. like you and me

  1627. to shame

  1628. the wise

  1629. because of him

  1630. you are in Christ

  1631. Jesus

  1632. who became

  1633. for us

  1634. wisdom

  1635. from God

  1636. that means

  1637. Jesus himself

  1638. is calling out

  1639. to you

  1640. with all the choices

  1641. that you have

  1642. and he's saying

  1643. run to me

  1644. turn to me

  1645. come to me

  1646. right now

  1647. with whatever

  1648. is going on

  1649. in your life

  1650. and you will

  1651. find

  1652. a feast

  1653. prepared for you

  1654. experience my love

  1655. so you're not craving

1656. for it from everyone else

  1657. my forgiveness

  1658. so you're free

  1659. from the guilt

  1660. and shame

  1661. which stops you

  1662. from learning

  1663. how to discipline

  1664. and bring out

  1665. your kids so well

  1666. with wisdom

  1667. come to me

  1668. because

  1669. Psalm 130

  1670. says

  1671. with the Lord

  1672. there is forgiveness

  1673. therefore

  1674. we will

  1675. fear

  1676. you

  1677. Jesus

  1678. is calling

  1679. you

  1680. will

  1681. you

  1682. come to him

  1683. for wisdom

  1684. let's pray

  1685. maybe as you just

  1686. think about

  1687. what's going on

  1688. in your life

  1689. at the moment

  1690. actually on the screen

  1691. we will have

  1692. just a few questions

1693. for you to just reflect

  1694. for a minute

  1695. because I don't want

  1696. us to run away

  1697. from actually

  1698. responding

  1699. to what

  1700. Jesus is trying

  1701. to say to you

  1702. right now

  1703. so have a look

  1704. at these four

  1705. questions

  1706. because

  1707. some of you

  1708. here

  1709. you have got

  1710. issues in your life

  1711. that you know

  1712. are real

  1713. and you've gone

  1714. and talked to

  1715. nobody about them

  1716. and today

  1717. Jesus is calling

  1718. you

  1719. to say

  1720. who are you

  1721. going to go

  1722. to

  1723. for godly

  1724. wisdom

  1725. some of you

  1726. are wrestling

  1727. with choices

  1728. at the moment

  1729. and you're

  1730. wondering

  1731. what do I

  1732. do

  1733. and it's

  1734. felt like

  1735. you've been

  1736. waiting

  1737. for a long

  1738. time

  1739. and Jesus

  1740. is just

  1741. saying

  1742. come to

  1743. me

  1744. trust

  1745. me

  1746. treasure

  1747. me

  1748. and I

  1749. will lead

  1750. you on

  1751. this path

  1752. you will

  1753. not

  1754. miss out

  1755. some of you

  1756. have just

  1757. never got

  1758. enough

  1759. into god's

  1760. word

  1761. enough

  1762. to really

  1763. understand

  1764. wisdom

  1765. and all

  1766. and god

  1767. is saying

  1768. to you

  1769. will you

  1770. come

  1771. into my

  1772. word

  1773. with my

  1774. people

  1775. and will

  1776. you let

  1777. me speak

  1778. to you

  1779. just like

  1780. you to

  1781. pray by

  1782. yourself

  1783. in reflection

  1784. of those

  1785. questions

  1786. just respond

  1787. to Jesus

  1788. yourself

  1789. right now

  1790. if you're a

  1791. Christian

  1792. if you're not

  1793. a Christian

  1794. where do you

  1795. get your wisdom

  1796. from

  1797. father

  1798. you sent

  1799. your son

  1800. to a world

  1801. full of foolish

  1802. people

  1803. like me

  1804. like all

  1805. of us

  1806. and it's

  1807. your grace

  1808. that you

  1809. keep

  1810. chasing

  1811. after us

  1812. you chased

  1813. us to

  1814. the cross

  1815. that you

  1816. draw us

  1817. back

  1818. that we'd

  1819. come into

  1820. this

  1821. relationship

  1822. with you

  1823. so that

  1824. we'd see

  1825. how the

  1826. world

  1827. works

  1828. we'd see

  1829. clearly

  1830. beyond

  1831. the foolishness

  1832. of the

  1833. things

  1834. that we

  1835. believe in

  1836. please I

  1837. pray for

  1838. us

  1839. pray for

  1840. us

  1841. that you'd

  1842. help us

  1843. to see

  1844. the beauty

  1845. of your

  1846. forgiveness

  1847. of your

  1848. grace

  1849. of your

  1850. honor

  1851. of the

  1852. glory

  1853. that you

  1854. have brought

  1855. us to

  1856. know you

  1857. and in

  1858. knowing you

  1859. we can

  1860. walk with

  1861. you

  1862. and know

  1863. that we're

  1864. not going

  1865. to screw

  1866. up our

  1867. lives

  1868. because when

  1869. we walk

  1870. with you

  1871. you make

  1872. a way

  1873. for us

  1874. I pray

  1875. for those

  1876. of us

  1877. who know

  1878. that actually

  1879. we've screwed

  1880. up in many

  1881. ways in

  1882. our lives

  1883. I pray

  1884. that they'd

  1885. hear you

  1886. speaking this

  1887. morning

  1888. that word

  1889. of just

  1890. come

  1891. and that we

  1892. turn and

  1893. find that

  1894. banquet of

  1895. forgiveness

  1896. and grace

  1913. try and

  1914. figure out

  1915. life by

  1916. ourselves

  1917. Lord

  1918. creating us

  1919. that humility

  1921. that sense

  1922. of knowing

  1923. how much

  1924. we need

  1925. you

  1926. and we

  1927. need

  1928. each

  1929. other

  1930. and grow

  1931. us in

  1932. wisdom

  1933. to love

  1934. you

  1935. to do

  1936. our

  1937. relationships

  1938. well

  1939. that we'll

  1940. honor you

  1941. in Jesus
