  1. Father, we ask that you would bring your word home deeply into our hearts and minds and lives.

  2. You know, Father, the fears we have about surrendering even more of who we are into your hands.

  3. Father, continue to bring before us how much you love us and that your son died on the cross to redeem us

  4. so that as we are gripped by what you have done for us in the person and work of Jesus,

  5. that we, Father, will ever more willingly surrender more and more of who we are into your hands,

  6. knowing that you only mean our good and our wholeness.

  7. And this we ask in Jesus' name, your son and our savior. Amen.

  8. Please be seated.

  9. One of the great fears that we have, probably not just in our culture but in every culture, is losing our mind.

  10. Many of us have probably known people who've suffered from some type of dementia, Alzheimer's,

  11. and it's very, very hard to watch somebody who might have been quite brilliant,

  12. even if they weren't brilliant.

  13. They don't have to be brilliant to make it tragic.

  14. It's just really hard when you see somebody just getting lost in their own thoughts.

  15. And, you know, I guess maybe in other cultures in earlier times,

  16. many people who now suffer dementia, they would have died from something else.

  17. So maybe it wasn't something as common.

  18. But for us, with all of our medical technology, it's very common.

  19. In fact, as you all know, one of the things which is driving the desire in our culture

  20. to have doctors be able to put people to death is, in fact, not only the fear of pain,

  21. but the fear of losing our minds.

  22. And just somehow if we lose our mind, we lose ourselves.

  23. So I don't know if you noticed when Anne was reading the text,

  24. But for many of us, this idea that Paul or the Bible desires to capture every single one of our thoughts

  25. and capture all of our thinking so that somehow our thoughts or thinking belongs to him,

  26. this is not an attractive thing to most of us, if we're honest.

  27. And so let's just look at it.

  28. Is what it is that the Bible is saying, what it is that the Bible is not saying about this.

  29. So it would be a great help to me and to you if you took your Bibles

  30. and turned to 2 Corinthians chapter 10.

    2 Corinthians 10 chapter mention

  31. 2 Corinthians chapter 10.

    2 Corinthians 10 chapter mention

  32. And we're going to look at that chapter.

  33. Just sort of going along with it, you know, for many people in our culture,

  34. the idea of becoming more and more deeply Christian

  35. is also sort of the idea that you become more and more irrational,

  36. more gullible, and more nuts.

  37. So this idea from all sorts of directions of having every thought captive to Christ,

  38. if we're honest, isn't very attractive.

  39. So we're going to look.

  40. And here's how it begins.

  41. We'll read the first few verses before we get to this troublesome bit.

  42. And in many ways, actually, the entire sermon is just around verses 4, 5, and 6.

  43. We'll use all of the chapter to illustrate it.

  44. But the different fears and objections that we tend to have to this idea,

  45. it's a very interesting how Paul sort of deals with it in the verses all around it.

  46. But here's how it begins.

  47. I, Paul, myself entreat you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ.

  48. I, who am humble when face to face with you, but bold toward you when I am away.

  49. I beg of you that when I am present, I may not have to show boldness with such confidence

  50. as I count on showing against some who suspect us of walking according to the flesh.

  51. Just pause there before we get any further.

  52. Chapter 10, 11, 12, and 13 of the letter.

  53. All the way through the letter, Paul's been dealing with a group of people in the church

  54. who are really against him and ultimately against the gospel.

  55. And it's really now in chapters 10, 11, and 12 in particular

  56. that he's going to address in a more pointed way some of the things that are going on in the church,

  57. which has provoked the letter.

  58. But we're not going to look at that today.

  59. We're going to look at a bit more of it next week and the week after.

  60. But that's sort of what's going on behind it there.

  61. Basically, one of the things that they're saying with him is,

  62. oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

  63. You know, when he's, you know, a couple of hundred kilometers away,

  64. he writes these big, tough letters.

  65. But when he's, you know, when he's around us, he's a big wuss, you know.

  66. And that's one of many complaints that they have against him.

  67. And so that's sort of the background to some of this.

  68. But we're not going to look at that.

  69. We're going to look at that more in the coming weeks, but not today.

  70. So back to verse 3.

  71. For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh.

  72. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh,

  73. but have divine power to destroy strongholds.

  74. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God

  75. and take every thought captive to obey Christ,

  76. being ready to punish every disobedience when your obedience is complete.

  77. You might have noticed as I read, I sort of almost said louder certain words.

  78. You can just imagine what it would be like if you were to just get a group of people together

  79. in a Tim Hortons or a Starbucks or a Bridgehead and say,

  80. how would you like to look at a Bible text?

  81. And you read this Bible text.

  82. And you could just, you can just, if you just imagine where your coworkers,

  83. how this idea of every thought and destroy and punish,

  84. and there'd be a chill in the room as the text is being read.

  85. So what's going on?

  86. Well, just a couple of things at first to help, not to tone down the language,

  87. but to help bring out the underlying sense.

  88. And when you understand the underlying sense, it doesn't sound quite as bad,

  89. but it's still very dramatic, and it's still very, very challenging.

  90. So for instance, when it says destroy, which is a very, very good word,

  91. it literally means pull down.

  92. You know, in the next couple of years,

  93. the deck at the back of my house is going to have to be destroyed

  94. because it's old.

  95. And if we want to put a new deck,

  96. if we want to get a proper deck that actually is workable,

  97. probably the only way to do it is at some point in time to destroy it

  98. or pull it down so that a proper one could go up.

  99. Or maybe in the meantime, you destroy or pull down parts of it

  100. and you put in new planks or new supports to keep it going for a longer time.

  101. And that's the language here.

  102. Destroy, pull down.

  103. And the language of punish, which is a very, very good word,

  104. but it's a technical legal word.

  105. One of the interesting things is that often in the New Testament,

  106. Paul in particular will use technical words from economics or business or law.

  107. And the word punish is one of those technical legal words.

  108. But if you understand its legal sense, it loses some of its sting.

  109. And its technical legal sense is make justice.

  110. Make justice.

  111. So, you know, for instance, then,

  112. if you heard that there was somebody in the congregation

  113. and they were harassing women,

  114. you'd want me to make justice, wouldn't you?

  115. In fact, if the council and myself didn't do something about it,

  116. you would all be upset.

  117. You'd want me to make justice.

  118. And part of the making justice should be that there should be some type of,

  119. well, of punishment to them, an amendment of life, etc.

  120. But that's the idea there.

  121. So on one hand, it takes a little bit of the sting off of the text,

  122. but it's still a very, very, very strong text.

  123. And here, Andrew, if you could put up the first point.

  124. And in some ways, this is the whole point of the sermon.

  125. And everything else in the sermon is to make you want this.

  126. And what Paul is saying, what the Bible is saying,

  127. is that Jesus Christ is to be the Savior and the Lord of my mind.

  128. I often put my down there,

  129. because if you're writing this down in your notes

  130. or if you're going to use it as your prayer,

  131. then it says you're saying this for yourself, right?

  132. So Jesus Christ is to be the Savior and the Lord of my mind

  133. from its deepest depths to its highest heights

  134. to its furthest reaches and to everything in between.

  135. Jesus Christ is to be the Savior and the Lord of my mind

  136. from its deepest depths to its highest heights

  137. to its furthest reaches and to everything in between.

  138. That's what Paul is saying here.

  139. In other words, if you're saying that Jesus is Lord,

  140. well, what part of Lord don't you understand?

  141. You see, it isn't that just Jesus came

  142. to save the spiritual part of us

  143. and then the non-spiritual part of us

  144. can just do whatever it wants.

  145. You know, we can just sort of live like a typical Ottawa person

  146. and just accept all of the things that Ottawa people do

  147. and it's just something's going on to our body

  148. or our secular time,

  149. but that Jesus is to be somehow Lord of our Sunday morning

  150. when we get together or our quiet time

  151. or certain types of religious emotions or affections.

  152. No, the great claim of the Christian gospel

  153. is that God, the Son of God,

  154. really and truly,

  155. seeing human enmity against him

  156. and human need and human sin,

  157. human rebellion and human apathy,

  158. and seeing humanity's great need

  159. that God, the Son of God,

  160. with the Father and the Holy Spirit,

  161. but God, the Son of God,

  162. sets aside his divine prerogatives

  163. and divine splendor.

  164. He takes into himself our human nature

  165. and comes and lives amongst us,

  166. living a fully human life

  167. only without himself being in rebellion

  168. or in enmity or sinning against God.

  169. And he comes to die upon the cross

  170. and as he dies upon the cross,

  171. he's both dying upon the cross

  172. to, in a sense,

  173. deal with all of the debt that we owe God

  174. in terms of our rebellion,

  175. but it's also a means by which,

  176. as our substitute and our exchange,

  177. even his relationship with God is offered to us.

  178. It's as if he says,

  179. George, I will take your doom

  180. and die upon the cross.

  181. And as I take your doom,

  182. I offer you my destiny.

  183. And that's the great message of the gospel,

  184. that that's what God, the Son of God,

  185. does in actual history, in real time,

  186. and he does it out of real love

  187. for you and for me.

  188. And God vindicates this message

  189. by having Jesus rise from the dead

  190. and appear to those to show

  191. that he really did rise from the dead

  192. and he's ascended in heaven,

  193. he will come again.

  194. And you see, this is what makes the gospel

  195. and what Paul is saying here

  196. very different than something like Islam,

  197. which I think for many people in our culture

  198. is almost the pure definition of religion

  199. because at the heart of Islam is submission,

  200. to submit to God,

  201. to submit to whatever his will happens to be.

  202. And it can be just maybe send,

  203. you know, 95% of the people to hell

  204. and 5% to heaven

  205. or whatever the statistics are

  206. to ruin your life,

  207. to benefit another person's life.

  208. Whatever his will happens to be that day,

  209. we are just to purely and utterly submit to it

  210. and we submit to it with no gospel.

  211. That's the profound, profound, profound

  212. watershed difference between the gospel

  213. and all religion and all spirituality.

  214. That all religion and all spirituality

  215. and even irreligion and opposition to spirituality

  216. always involves some submission to something.

  217. Your own mind, to drinking,

  218. to your culture, to Islam, to Buddhism,

  219. to Krishna, whatever it is.

  220. Some type of submission with no gospel.

  221. But what we see here in this particular text

  222. is that God so loved the world

  223. that he gave his one and only son to the end

  224. that all that believe in him

  225. will not perish but have eternal life.

  226. That the person who loves you

  227. more than you love yourself,

  228. who knows you better than you know yourself,

  229. and sees your need better than you see your need,

  230. and sees the glory you have,

  231. in a sense, in God's eye,

  232. better than you see the glory

  233. that you have in God's eye,

  234. that the one who knows you so well,

  235. he died for you.

  236. And the same one who loves you so much

  237. that he died for you to reconcile you

  238. to your creator

  239. is the same one who says,

  240. your mind belongs to me.

  241. I mean, there's other things.

  242. It's just here we're talking about the mind.

  243. Your sexuality belongs to me.

  244. Your money belongs to me.

  245. Your time belongs to me.

  246. Your body belongs to me.

  247. That when you trust Jesus as Savior,

  248. you put your hand out,

  249. and he comes and takes your hand

  250. to be your Savior

  251. at the same time you are taking him as your Lord.

  252. And that includes your mind.

  253. It includes your logic,

  254. your imagination,

  255. your memories,

  256. the furniture of your mind,

  257. the longings and habits

  258. and patterns of your mind.

  259. He comes and takes your mind.

  260. And so that's what Paul is saying

  261. in this particular text.

  262. It's bringing home in a very sharp and pointed way

  263. that Jesus Christ is to be the Savior

  264. and the Lord of my mind

  265. from its deepest depths

  266. to its highest heights

  267. to its furthest reaches

  268. and to everything in between.

  269. So some of you might say,

  270. okay, George,

  271. it's still a very type of violent language.

  272. And boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.

  273. Don't you think language like this is dangerous?

  274. Don't you think it can be the case that,

  275. I don't know, George,

  276. doesn't it sort of lead to being

  277. a type of closed-mindedness

  278. that you know everything you need to know

  279. is just in this book

  280. and if it's not in this book,

  281. you're going to be really aggressive

  282. against people who disagree with you

  283. and, you know,

  284. there's something arrogant about this text.

  285. Don't you think there's something arrogant

  286. about this text?

  287. Like, that's a very good objection.

  288. And you know what?

  289. Part of the objection is because

  290. many people have met Christians

  291. who are extremely aggressive,

  292. who like the idea very much

  293. of destroying arguments.

  294. I used to be the chaplain

  295. at Augustine College

  296. and one of the things

  297. that I had to do

  298. as a chaplain of Augustine College

  299. is that once a week

  300. I did a teaching time

  301. as well as leading some worship.

  302. And there was this one particular year there

  303. that there was a fellow

  304. who was from a very, very

  305. high Reformed background.

  306. He had,

  307. and some of you might know

  308. a little bit about this

  309. and others of you don't,

  310. but it's like there's these

  311. massive theological works

  312. with in-house theological jargon

  313. and it's just very, very, very ornate

  314. and intricate

  315. with all sorts of little bits and pieces

  316. and he knew this system very well.

  317. And every week at chapel

  318. he delighted in trying to embarrass me

  319. with asking me questions.

  320. And frankly, most of the time

  321. I didn't have the vaguest idea in the world

  322. what he was talking about.

  323. Like, just to be honest,

  324. I'm a simple Bible guy.

  325. You know,

  326. and you know,

  327. if I could go back in time

  328. I'd say, you know,

  329. you should spend ten times more

  330. reading the Bible

  331. than you do reading this

  332. ornate,

  333. Reformed,

  334. theological,

  335. theologizing.

  336. But you know,

  337. many non-Christians

  338. have met Christians

  339. who are so aggressive.

  340. But is that,

  341. is that what the Christian mind is like?

  342. Is that what it's like

  343. when Jesus takes over,

  344. becomes the Savior

  345. and the Lord of your mind?

  346. Well, look at the text.

  347. Look at verse one again.

  348. I, Paul, myself,

  349. entreat you

  350. by the meekness

  351. and gentleness of Christ.

  352. Look at that.

  353. I, Paul, myself,

  354. entreat you.

  355. How?

  356. How's he doing this?

  357. Like, what's the ground

  358. by which he's begging them

  359. to think through

  360. what they're doing?

  361. Because that's what entreat means.

  362. By the meekness

  363. and gentleness

  364. of Christ.

  365. I, who am humble

  366. when face to face with you,

  367. but bold toward you

  368. when I am awake.

  369. If you could put it up,

  370. Andrew,

  371. the Christian mind

  372. is gentle,

  373. teachable,

  374. and strong.

  375. Why should you desire

  376. Jesus to be

  377. the Lord of your mind?

  378. Because

  379. as you start

  380. to call out to God

  381. that,

  382. that Jesus would be

  383. the Savior

  384. and the Lord of your mind,

  385. he will lead you

  386. to a mind

  387. that is gentle.

  388. and he will move

  389. and work in with you

  390. to start to create a mind

  391. which is teachable.

  392. And he will make your mind

  393. strong,

  394. not weak.

  395. Like, why do you say that?

  396. Like, how does that,

  397. like, partially,

  398. that's what the word

  399. meek partially means.

  400. It has several

  401. different senses.

  402. In this particular contest,

  403. it means,

  404. meek means

  405. submissive to God.

  406. You know,

  407. I love it.

  408. I love,

  409. I love,

  410. I love,

  411. I love.

  412. It's a perfect illustration.

  413. Some of you are old enough

  414. to remember

  415. when the Solidarity Movement

  416. was,

  417. was starting to bring down

  418. an empire.

  419. For those of us

  420. of a certain age,

  421. we thought the Soviet Empire

  422. would never come to an end,

  423. virtually.

  424. And it was a bunch

  425. of Polish ship workers

  426. who were the beginning

  427. of the end

  428. of the Soviet Empire.

  429. And there was a phrase

  430. that they were

  431. on their knees

  432. before God

  433. so they could stand

  434. before tyrants.

  435. They were on their knees

  436. before God

  437. so they could stand

  438. before tyrants.

  439. Some of you

  440. might have seen

  441. film clips

  442. of what Martin Luther King

  443. and the early

  444. Civil Rights Movement

  445. was like.

  446. And it is very,

  447. very gripping

  448. to see all these people

  449. in their Sunday best

  450. kneeling

  451. in the face

  452. of

  453. men

  454. in uniforms

  455. with truncheons

  456. and water cannons

  457. and I,

  458. there are so many images

  459. of them

  460. on their knees

  461. in prayer

  462. as the water cannons

  463. and the truncheons

  464. are unleashed

  465. against them.

  466. That is being meek.

  467. It's being strong.

  468. It's being gentle.

  469. I want that.

  470. That's what happens

  471. when we give our minds

  472. to Christ.

  473. And as his word

  474. and as his Holy Spirit

  475. begins to work

  476. in our minds,

  477. they become gentle

  478. and teachable

  479. and strong.

  480. But some of you

  481. might say,

  482. George,

  483. don't you think

  484. that this whole thing

  485. of a Christian mind

  486. can lead people

  487. to believe

  488. that they're always right?

  489. That non-Christians

  490. are always wrong?

  491. Don't you think

  492. that it can become

  493. that religion

  494. ends up divinizing

  495. their thought?

  496. You know,

  497. George,

  498. haven't you met

  499. these charismatic types

  500. who,

  501. you know,

  502. they say they have

  503. a word from God

  504. about this type of thing

  505. and it doesn't matter

  506. how crazy it is

  507. or how kooky

  508. or in fact

  509. how just wrong

  510. historically and accurate

  511. it is

  512. but they somehow,

  513. you know,

  514. everybody else

  515. just has an idea

  516. but they have a word

  517. that's come from God.

  518. Like,

  519. George,

  520. don't you think,

  521. well,

  522. okay.

  523. Once again,

  524. all of us have met

  525. people like that,

  526. right?

  527. You know,

  528. with this thing

  529. and the last thing

  530. about aggressive minds,

  531. these are both

  532. human problems.

  533. Many of us

  534. have had professors

  535. far from having

  536. believing in Jesus

  537. who are very aggressive

  538. with their thoughts.

  539. I mean,

  540. what are the new atheists

  541. other than people

  542. who are exceptionally

  543. aggressive

  544. in their thinking?

  545. It's a human problem

  546. and by the way,

  547. human problems

  548. like this

  549. become even more

  550. disgusting

  551. when they try

  552. to cloak themselves

  553. in Christianity

  554. to make it look

  555. like they're not

  556. a human problem

  557. but they're doing

  558. something virtuous.

  559. It even becomes

  560. more foul-smelling

  561. and repulsive

  562. if habits

  563. of aggression

  564. and of always

  565. thinking you're right

  566. are somehow

  567. clothed

  568. within the mantle

  569. of Christianity.

  570. It makes it

  571. more repulsive.

  572. But is that,

  573. in fact,

  574. what happens?

  575. Is that what Paul

  576. is talking about?

  577. Is this what the Bible

  578. is talking about?

  579. Is that type of

  580. divinized,

  581. aggressive mind?

  582. No.

  583. Let's look at

  584. verses 2 and 3.

  585. How does it go?

  586. I beg of you

  587. that when I am present

  588. I may not have

  589. to show boldness

  590. with such confidence

  591. as I count on showing

  592. against some

  593. who suspect us

  594. of walking

  595. according to the flesh.

  596. For though we walk

  597. in the flesh

  598. we are not waging war

  599. according to the flesh.

  600. Just pause there

  601. and it's a bit

  602. of a confusing thing.

  603. Just so you know

  604. it's a bit of a,

  605. you know,

  606. one of the things

  607. the word that,

  608. the original word

  609. that's translated

  610. as flesh,

  611. flesh.

  612. It has two

  613. different senses

  614. and you just have

  615. to know from the context

  616. which one of the two

  617. senses it is.

  618. And here in this case

  619. the Bible is using

  620. the word flesh

  621. the first part of verse 3

  622. in one sense

  623. and in the second part

  624. it's using it

  625. in a different sense.

  626. Sometimes the word flesh

  627. just means

  628. frail

  629. and human

  630. and sometimes

  631. it means

  632. in rebellion

  633. against God.

  634. And you just have

  635. to know from the context

  636. which one of the two

  637. senses it is.

  638. And so here's the point

  639. if you could put it up

  640. and this is borrowing

  641. language from earlier

  642. in 2 Corinthians.

  643. The Christian mind

  644. knows it is a jar

  645. of clay

  646. redeemed by Christ.

  647. The Christian mind

  648. knows it is a jar

  649. of clay

  650. redeemed by Christ.

  651. Christ.

  652. I went to

  653. a presentation

  654. by the Dalit

  655. Freedom Network

  656. in India

  657. under Hinduism

  658. under its cosmology

  659. of Hinduism

  660. it creates

  661. different castes.

  662. Your karma

  663. means that you're

  664. reborn

  665. into certain

  666. stages of life

  667. and

  668. it creates

  669. a lot of

  670. injustice

  671. because

  672. you deserve

  673. where you are.

  674. If you're

  675. very wealthy

  676. you deserve that.

  677. If you're

  678. very very very

  679. poor

  680. you're born

  681. of certain

  682. parents

  683. you deserve

  684. that.

  685. And there's

  686. a sense

  687. that you don't

  688. have to show

  689. justice or

  690. compassion across

  691. these lines

  692. because you get

  693. your justice

  694. of desserts

  695. when you're

  696. born.

  697. And Dalits

  698. are the lowest

  699. of the lowest

  700. of the lowest.

  701. and in this

  702. presentation

  703. on how to

  704. try to

  705. both evangelize

  706. and educate

  707. and empower

  708. the Dalits

  709. for freedom

  710. and human

  711. flourishing

  712. one of the

  713. things that

  714. they gave

  715. out

  716. and I meant

  717. to bring

  718. it but I

  719. forgot

  720. was this

  721. little tiny

  722. thing made

  723. of clay

  724. and a little

  725. tiny drinking

  726. thing made

  727. of clay

  728. and the reason

  729. they gave

  730. this tiny

  731. little drinking

  732. thing made

  733. of clay

  734. was because

  735. if a Dalit

  736. went into

  737. some restaurants

  738. in some parts

  739. of India

  740. they wouldn't

  741. want the

  742. same cup

  743. that a Dalit

  744. had been used

  745. had used

  746. to be used

  747. by somebody

  748. who's of

  749. higher caste

  750. so they had

  751. these special

  752. drinking cups

  753. these little

  754. jars of clay

  755. which are

  756. very fragile

  757. and very

  758. impermanent

  759. so that

  760. after the Dalit

  761. had drank

  762. from it

  763. the owner

  764. of the store

  765. and they

  766. cost virtually

  767. nothing

  768. would just

  769. smash it

  770. to make sure

  771. that nobody

  772. else would

  773. drink

  774. from such

  775. a cup

  776. and earlier

  777. on in the

  778. book of

  779. 2nd Corinthians

  780. Paul says

  781. that human

  782. beings are

  783. jars of

  784. clay

  785. but that's

  786. how we are

  787. to understand

  788. we're fragile

  789. so really

  790. in verse 3

  791. what Paul

  792. is saying

  793. is for

  794. though we

  795. walk in

  796. the flesh

  797. in other

  798. words

  799. though we

  800. live our

  801. lives

  802. as jars

  803. of clay

  804. we are

  805. not

  806. waging

  807. war

  808. sorry

  809. for though

  810. we walk

  811. in the

  812. flesh

  813. we are

  814. not

  815. waging

  816. war

  817. according

  818. to the

  819. flesh

  820. and there

  821. it means

  822. not just

  823. from human

  824. frailty

  825. but we're

  826. not living

  827. our lives

  828. and waging

  829. war

  830. as if

  831. we're

  832. in rebellion

  833. against

  834. God

  835. we've

  836. been

  837. redeemed

  838. see that's

  839. that's part

  840. of the

  841. Christian

  842. mind

  843. knows

  844. and understands

  845. that it

  846. is

  847. a jar

  848. of clay

  849. redeemed

  850. by Christ

  851. you know

  852. there's some

  853. very very smart

  854. people here

  855. in the room

  856. who could tell

  857. you a lot

  858. about intellectual

  859. history

  860. and development

  861. of thought

  862. and some

  863. of you

  864. are taking

  865. classes

  866. from really

  867. high IQ

  868. well educated

  869. people at

  870. University of

  871. Ottawa or

  872. Carleton

  873. and they

  874. could talk

  875. to you a lot

  876. about the

  877. history of

  878. thought

  879. but one

  880. of the

  881. things about

  882. the history

  883. of human

  884. thought

  885. is that

  886. on one

  887. hand we

  888. often want

  889. to imagine

  890. that our

  891. thoughts or

  892. our life

  893. are almost

  894. as if we

  895. are gods

  896. I mean

  897. part of the

  898. whole move

  899. of science

  900. is to try

  901. to come

  902. up with

  903. some type

  904. of almost

  905. godlike

  906. knowledge

  907. of the

  908. world

  909. and then

  910. when you

  911. have people

  912. like Nietzsche

  913. and Foucault

  914. and others

  915. who are

  916. very skeptical

  917. about the

  918. claims of

  919. human knowledge

  920. and how much

  921. we actually

  922. know

  923. it's almost

  924. as if

  925. the only

  926. options

  927. before human

  928. beings

  929. are that

  930. our minds

  931. if our

  932. minds

  933. are not

  934. almost

  935. godlike

  936. then we're

  937. garbage

  938. and the

  939. bible says

  940. no

  941. human

  942. beings

  943. are

  944. creatures

  945. and we

  946. know like

  947. creatures

  948. and no

  949. creature

  950. will ever

  951. know

  952. as if

  953. they are

  954. the

  955. creator

  956. and there

  957. are many

  958. things that

  959. human

  960. beings

  961. can only

  962. know

  963. if the

  964. creator

  965. makes it

  966. revealed

  967. to you

  968. and so

  969. the text

  970. here is

  971. trying to

  972. say that

  973. as

  974. Jesus

  975. grips

  976. our

  977. thoughts

  978. as he

  979. comes in

  980. to destroy

  981. to tear

  982. down parts

  983. of how

  984. we think

  985. whether it's

  986. how we

  987. think about

  988. music

  989. or poetry

  990. or art

  991. or dance

  992. or business

  993. or culture

  994. or politics

  995. or philosophy

  996. or physics

  997. that he's

  998. going to tear

  999. some things

  1000. down and he's

  1001. going to build

  1002. some things

  1003. up and one

  1004. of the things

  1005. he wants

  1006. to tear

  1007. down is

  1008. any type

  1009. of pretension

  1010. that a human

  1011. being is

  1012. anything other

  1013. than a jar

  1014. of clay

  1015. but at the

  1016. same time

  1017. that it

  1018. makes it

  1019. conscious

  1020. that we

  1021. are jars

  1022. of clay

  1023. if we

  1024. understand

  1025. that we

  1026. are a

  1027. jar

  1028. of clay

  1029. and our

  1030. permanence

  1031. is not

  1032. something

  1033. from within

  1034. ourselves

  1035. but a

  1036. gift that

  1037. comes from

  1038. the God

  1039. who has

  1040. created us

  1041. who sustains

  1042. us

  1043. who will

  1044. bring all

  1045. things to

  1046. their proper

  1047. end

  1048. who in

  1049. our enmity

  1050. against him

  1051. still he

  1052. loved us

  1053. and sent

  1054. his son

  1055. to die

  1056. upon the

  1057. cross

  1058. for us

  1059. that there

  1060. can be a

  1061. growing

  1062. comfort

  1063. with the

  1064. fact that

  1065. I am a

  1066. jar of

  1067. clay

  1068. I am

  1069. not a

  1070. God

  1071. and I

  1072. stand here

  1073. as a jar

  1074. of clay

  1075. in a room

  1076. full of

  1077. jars of

  1078. clay

  1079. whom God

  1080. does not

  1081. treat as

  1082. garbage

  1083. like a

  1084. dalit

  1085. who has

  1086. to be

  1087. smashed

  1088. but loves

  1089. you and

  1090. me

  1091. and dies

  1092. for you

  1093. and me

  1094. and Jesus

  1095. desires to

  1096. be the

  1097. savior and

  1098. the lord

  1099. of your

  1100. thinking and

  1101. your thoughts

  1102. but some

  1103. people might

  1104. say

  1105. okay George

  1106. does this

  1107. mean that the

  1108. Christian mind

  1109. only cares

  1110. about the

  1111. Bible

  1112. like it's

  1113. just all

  1114. about knowing

  1115. the Bible

  1116. knowing the

  1117. Bible

  1118. knowing the

  1119. Bible

  1120. like when

  1121. you were

  1122. telling us

  1123. that story

  1124. about the

  1125. guy who

  1126. was that

  1127. you know

  1128. Calvinist

  1129. hyper

  1130. Calvinist

  1131. type of

  1132. guy

  1133. and you

  1134. said you

  1135. know you

  1136. should have

  1137. said to

  1138. him you

  1139. should read

  1140. the Bible

  1141. ten times

  1142. more than

  1143. his

  1144. theologizing

  1145. is that

  1146. you know

  1147. George

  1148. that you

  1149. just want

  1150. to read

  1151. the Bible

  1152. read the

  1153. Bible

  1154. read the

  1155. Bible

  1156. and you

  1157. don't want

  1158. to read

  1159. economics

  1160. you don't

  1161. want to

  1162. read

  1163. you don't

  1164. want to

  1165. watch

  1166. movies

  1167. you don't

  1168. want to

  1169. be involved

  1170. in the

  1171. world

  1172. no

  1173. look

  1174. again at

  1175. what it

  1176. says in

  1177. verses 4

  1178. to 6

  1179. the central

  1180. verses

  1181. but we'll

  1182. just look at

  1183. one other

  1184. thing about

  1185. these in

  1186. verses 4

  1187. and 6

  1188. for the

  1189. weapons of

  1190. our

  1191. warfare

  1192. are not

  1193. of the

  1194. flesh

  1195. and here

  1196. flesh

  1197. Paul probably

  1198. means it to

  1199. have a

  1200. double

  1201. meaning

  1202. that they're

  1203. not frail

  1204. but more in

  1205. particular that

  1206. they're not

  1207. anything to do

  1208. with acting

  1209. in rebellion

  1210. against God

  1211. but

  1212. you know

  1213. they're not

  1214. this but

  1215. they have

  1216. divine power

  1217. to destroy

  1218. strongholds

  1219. in other words

  1220. this idea of

  1221. strongholds is

  1222. that there's

  1223. areas within

  1224. our mind

  1225. and here

  1226. mind doesn't

  1227. just mean

  1228. logic it can

  1229. mean for

  1230. those of

  1231. us who

  1232. are more

  1233. like we

  1234. like poetry

  1235. we write

  1236. poetry or

  1237. we have

  1238. we're very

  1239. good with

  1240. images we

  1241. could maybe

  1242. be a

  1243. director

  1244. or we

  1245. could be

  1246. like a

  1247. fashion

  1248. designer or

  1249. we could

  1250. design

  1251. dance or

  1252. something like

  1253. that and

  1254. maybe those

  1255. parts of our

  1256. mind that are

  1257. better towards

  1258. business or

  1259. better towards

  1260. computers or

  1261. better towards

  1262. just being able

  1263. to actually have

  1264. that type of

  1265. intelligence to

  1266. figure out what

  1267. a kid actually

  1268. wants and

  1269. help the

  1270. kid

  1271. that's

  1272. intelligence

  1273. you know

  1274. but there's

  1275. parts of our

  1276. mind that are

  1277. strongholds and

  1278. what this means

  1279. is that they're

  1280. they're completely

  1281. and utterly

  1282. keeping God

  1283. at bay

  1284. and it has to

  1285. be torn down

  1286. and we tear

  1287. down verse 5

  1288. arguments in

  1289. every lofty

  1290. opinion every

  1291. pretension

  1292. every person

  1293. in the CBC

  1294. or the

  1295. University of

  1296. Ottawa or the

  1297. Supreme Court of

  1298. Canada or the

  1299. Parliament of

  1300. Canada whose

  1301. lofty opinions

  1302. mean that God

  1303. doesn't matter

  1304. that there is no

  1305. God that we have

  1306. to worry about

  1307. or think about

  1308. if you happen to

  1309. have a view of

  1310. God that helps

  1311. to give you a

  1312. little tiny bit

  1313. of peace and

  1314. comfort some

  1315. people like

  1316. Jack Daniel

  1317. some like

  1318. bridge some

  1319. like you know

  1320. bird watching

  1321. some like

  1322. thinking about

  1323. God as long

  1324. as it's just

  1325. private lofty

  1326. opinions raised

  1327. against the

  1328. knowledge of

  1329. God and take

  1330. every thought

  1331. captive to

  1332. obey Christ

  1333. being ready to

  1334. punish make

  1335. justice against

  1336. every disobedience

  1337. here's the thing

  1338. which is going on

  1339. in this text if

  1340. you could put up

  1341. the next point

  1342. the Christian

  1343. mind seeks

  1344. and loves

  1345. all truth

  1346. all goodness

  1347. and all beauty

  1348. in the creator

  1349. and in his

  1350. creation

  1351. the Christian

  1352. mind seeks

  1353. and loves

  1354. all truth

  1355. all goodness

  1356. and all beauty

  1357. in the creator

  1358. and in his

  1359. creation

  1360. it's not talking

  1361. here about Bible

  1362. reading

  1363. you know if you

  1364. have

  1365. if you're in

  1366. science

  1367. and you come up

  1368. with a theory

  1369. of how science

  1370. works

  1371. which you believe

  1372. means that God

  1373. absolutely doesn't

  1374. exist

  1375. well don't you

  1376. think that's sort

  1377. of covered under

  1378. this text

  1379. if you come up

  1380. with a system

  1381. of doing

  1382. organizing business

  1383. that in a sense

  1384. specifically excludes

  1385. God or anything

  1386. about how God

  1387. is revealed about

  1388. human beings

  1389. don't you think

  1390. that's a stronghold

  1391. like if you come

  1392. up with a theory

  1393. of aesthetics

  1394. or beauty

  1395. or dance

  1396. in such a way

  1397. that it can never

  1398. point at any way

  1399. that we're creatures

1400. or that there is a God

  1401. don't you think

  1402. that's a stronghold

  1403. you see

  1404. nothing here

  1405. in the Bible

  1406. is just calling us

  1407. to somehow

  1408. think that

  1409. the Bible here

  1410. is only referring to

  1411. okay

  1412. on Sunday mornings

  1413. this text

  1414. is just saying

  1415. that you're going

  1416. to go

  1417. and you're going

  1418. to make sure

  1419. that people

  1420. understand why

  1421. Spong is wrong

  1422. and Borg is wrong

  1423. and you're going

  1424. to understand

  1425. you know

  1426. why Keller

  1427. is right

  1428. or Piper

  1429. is right

  1430. and it's just

  1431. all about

  1432. no no no no

  1433. no this text

  1434. is not just

  1435. talking about

  1436. some tiny little

  1437. religious or

  1438. spiritual part

  1439. of our mind

  1440. it's challenging

  1441. those of you

  1442. who are in school

  1443. still who are

  1444. doing economics

  1445. those of you

  1446. in social work

  1447. it's challenging

  1448. how you think

  1449. of human beings

  1450. and how you

  1451. think of human

  1452. destiny

  1453. and human purpose

  1454. for those of you

  1455. who are in medicine

  1456. it's challenging

  1457. you with ethical

  1458. things in terms

  1459. of how you

  1460. treat people

  1461. and how you

  1462. see the person

  1463. for those of you

  1464. in dance

  1465. or in fashion

  1466. design

  1467. or in business

  1468. those of you

  1469. who are retired

  1470. or stay at home

  1471. those of you

  1472. thinking about politics

  1473. there's nothing

  1474. that this text

  1475. doesn't involve

  1476. there's nothing

  1477. the Christian

  1478. mind seeks

  1479. and loves

  1480. all truth

  1481. truth is

  1482. never the enemy

  1483. of the Christian

  1484. truth is

  1485. never the enemy

  1486. of the Christian

  1487. goodness

  1488. and beauty

  1489. are never

  1490. our enemy

  1491. why

  1492. because God

  1493. is true

  1494. God is good

  1495. God is beautiful

  1496. a beauty

  1497. that would

  1498. unmake us

  1499. if we saw it

  1500. even a tiniest

  1501. sliver of the

  1502. beauty of God

1503. if it was to be

  1504. revealed to us

  1505. right now

  1506. without having

  1507. our resurrection

  1508. bodies

  1509. and being

  1510. the full

  1511. bodies

  1512. meant for the

  1513. new heaven

  1514. and the earth

  1515. the beauty

  1516. of God

  1517. even the

  1518. tiniest

  1519. sliver of it

  1520. would unmake

  1521. us

  1522. and not just

  1523. knowing God

  1524. and his truth

  1525. and his goodness

  1526. and his beauty

  1527. but God

  1528. is the creator

  1529. and sustainer

  1530. of all things

  1531. and therefore

  1532. this text

  1533. is asking us

  1534. to think through

  1535. how we think

  1536. and imagine

  1537. everything

  1538. every area

  1539. of human

  1540. intellectual

  1541. and cultural

  1542. endeavor

  1543. and political

  1544. endeavor

  1545. here's a couple

  1546. of hints

  1547. I'm going to have

  1548. to speed this up

  1549. to get it done

  1550. here's a couple

  1551. of hints

  1552. in terms of

  1553. growing in our

  1554. Christian mind

  1555. one of the first

  1556. things that has

  1557. to die

  1558. if you want

  1559. to take this

  1560. text

  1561. and pray

  1562. it

  1563. is die

  1564. to oil

  1565. and water

  1566. thinking

  1567. which I've

  1568. been sort of

  1569. going through

  1570. in the sermon

  1571. in other words

  1572. there's the

  1573. spiritual

  1574. and then there's

  1575. everything else

  1576. you know

  1577. our culture

  1578. says okay

  1579. George

  1580. you can have

  1581. your spiritual

  1582. thoughts

  1583. you can have

  1584. your spiritual

  1585. beliefs

  1586. as long as

  1587. with everything

  1588. else

  1589. you act

  1590. the way

  1591. we want

  1592. you to act

  1593. and think

  1594. the way

  1595. we want

  1596. you to think

  1597. you can go

  1598. to University

  1599. of Ottawa

  1600. you can get

  1601. your degrees

  1602. as long

  1603. as

  1604. you just

  1605. see your

  1606. faith

  1607. as private

  1608. and interior

  1609. and emotional

  1610. and not

  1611. as having

  1612. intellectual

  1613. consequences

  1614. you have

  1615. to die

  1616. to all

  1617. oil and water

  1618. thinking

  1619. you have

  1620. to learn

  1621. to say

  1622. if this

  1623. then this

  1624. cannot be

  1625. so in other words

  1626. if you're in

  1627. counseling

  1628. when I was

  1629. being taught

  1630. counseling

  1631. the view

  1632. in counseling

  1633. was that

  1634. human beings

  1635. are fundamentally

  1636. passive

  1637. and

  1638. it's just as if

  1639. these wounds

  1640. happen to us

  1641. and these things

  1642. happen to us

  1643. and there's this type

  1644. of basically

  1645. passiveness

  1646. but the Bible

  1647. is that what

  1648. the Bible says

  1649. doesn't the Bible

  1650. portray somehow

  1651. that we actively

  1652. seek out idols

  1653. and we seek out

  1654. meanings

  1655. and we seek out

  1656. significance

  1657. doesn't that

  1658. happen

  1659. you know

  1660. if you're in

  1661. if you're in

  1662. if you're in

  1663. you know

  1664. philosophy

  1665. or science

  1666. and

  1667. if you know

  1668. if this and that

  1669. if the Bible

  1670. seems to say

  1671. there's miracles

  1672. and if they

  1673. really happen

  1674. then that has

  1675. to have some

  1676. effect

  1677. on how you

  1678. think through

  1679. sociology

  1680. and psychology

  1681. and physics

  1682. and geology

  1683. biology

  1684. now I'm frightening

  1685. some of you

  1686. but it has to

  1687. have some

  1688. consequence

  1689. it can't be

  1690. that the miracle

  1691. is just true

  1692. here

  1693. and not in

  1694. terms of how

  1695. we think about

  1696. all sorts of

  1697. other things

  1698. in other words

  1699. you have to

  1700. learn to say

  1701. okay if it

  1702. says this

  1703. in the Bible

  1704. if this

  1705. then what does

  1706. that mean

  1707. in terms

  1708. of this

  1709. other area

  1710. and the

  1711. other thing

  1712. about it

  1713. is

  1714. that it's

  1715. not saying

  1716. that we have

  1717. to have a

  1718. Christian

  1719. economics

  1720. or a

  1721. Christian

  1722. sociology

  1723. or a

  1724. Christian

  1725. social work

  1726. because that

  1727. would sort of

  1728. imply

  1729. that there's

  1730. only like

  1731. one type

  1732. of person

  1733. or one type

  1734. of culture

  1735. or one type

  1736. of imagination

  1737. but what do

  1738. we know

  1739. about people

  1740. you know

  1741. let me tell

  1742. you if

  1743. we just

  1744. took random

  1745. groups of

  1746. us

  1747. and we were

  1748. all going

  1749. to go on

  1750. a road

  1751. trip

  1752. you know

  1753. let's say

  1754. somewhere

  1755. eight hours

  1756. away

  1757. by the end

  1758. of the

  1759. eight hour

  1760. time

  1761. we would

  1762. discover

  1763. just how

  1764. many

  1765. how

  1766. different

  1767. we all

  1768. are

  1769. our

  1770. imaginations

  1771. work

  1772. differently

  1773. and so

  1774. this text

  1775. isn't saying

  1776. that you

  1777. have to

  1778. keep

  1779. searching

  1780. for the

  1781. one

  1782. Christian

  1783. politics

  1784. or the

  1785. one

  1786. Christian

  1787. economics

  1788. or the

  1789. one

  1790. Christian

  1791. psychology

  1792. because

  1793. human

  1794. beings

  1795. all of

  1796. the

  1797. different

  1798. things

  1799. in

  1800. psychology

  1801. all of

  1802. the

  1803. different

  1804. complexity

  1805. of a

  1806. human

  1807. being

  1808. and

  1809. trying

  1810. to

  1811. understand

  1812. how

  1813. human

  1814. beings

  1815. process

  1816. things

  1817. and how

  1818. they

  1819. work

  1820. and how

  1821. they

  1822. act

  1823. and so

  1824. people

  1825. will

  1826. come up

  1827. with

  1828. different

  1829. theories

  1830. and

  1831. different

  1832. hints

  1833. and

  1834. different

  1835. practices

  1836. and that's

  1837. completely

  1838. fine

  1839. it's not

  1840. calling

  1841. everybody

  1842. to

  1843. uniformity

  1844. but it's

  1845. saying

  1846. that as

  1847. people

  1848. think

  1849. those

  1850. things

  1851. through

  1852. that

  1853. there's

  1854. a

  1855. Christian

  1856. critique

  1857. to it

  1858. and in

  1859. a sense

  1860. the Bible

  1861. will both

  1862. subvert

  1863. part of

  1864. all

  1865. disciplines

  1866. yet at

  1867. the same

  1868. time

  1869. fulfill

  1870. the true

  1871. and good

  1872. and beautiful

  1873. insights

  1874. within them

  1875. I really

  1876. have to

  1877. I'm just

  1878. going to

  1879. have to

  1880. run

  1881. through

  1882. these last

  1883. points

  1884. pretty

  1885. quickly

  1886. if you

  1887. could put

  1888. up the

  1889. next

  1890. point

  1891. Andrew

  1892. here's

  1893. I think

  1894. you get

  1895. the text

  1896. I could

  1897. go through

  1898. the rest

  1899. of the

  1900. text

  1901. and bring

  1902. these

  1903. things

  1904. out

  1905. I'm just

  1906. going to

  1907. share you

  1908. the different

  1909. other things

  1910. for the

  1911. Christian

  1912. mind

  1913. the Christian

  1914. mind

  1915. regularly

  1916. prays to

  1917. God

  1918. for wisdom

  1919. and knowledge

  1920. the Christian

  1921. mind

  1922. regularly

  1923. prays to

  1924. God

  1925. for wisdom

  1926. and knowledge

  1927. that's

  1928. going to

  1929. be

  1930. in

  1931. this

  1932. part

  1933. of the

  1934. text

  1935. about

  1936. divine

  1937. power

  1938. with

  1939. its

  1940. strongholds

  1941. and all

  1942. that

  1943. it's

  1944. that it's

  1945. not as if

  1946. somehow

  1947. we just

  1948. become a

  1949. mind

  1950. and we

  1951. just

  1952. become

  1953. either

  1954. an artist

  1955. type

  1956. or a

  1957. poet

  1958. type

  1959. or an

  1960. economist

  1961. type

  1962. or a

  1963. business

  1964. type

  1965. or a

  1966. philosopher

  1967. or science

  1968. type

  1969. no you

  1970. pray

  1971. I mean

  1972. you know

  1973. students

  1974. when you're

  1975. working on

  1976. your papers

  1977. you should

  1978. pray that

  1979. God helps

  1980. you to

  1981. think

  1982. you should

  1983. pray that

  1984. he helps

  1985. you to

  1986. focus

  1987. you should

  1988. pray that

  1989. he leads

  1990. you and

  1991. guides

  1992. you on

  1993. to all

  1994. truth

  1995. you should

  1996. pray that

  1997. he helps

  1998. you to

  1999. write it

  2000. if you're

  2001. in government

  2002. and you know

  2003. you're having to

  2004. deal with

  2005. people or

  2006. write reports

  2007. you should

  2008. pray about

  2009. that

  2010. you should

  2011. pray for

  2012. your boss

  2013. you should

  2014. pray for

  2015. wisdom

  2016. and knowledge

  2017. why

  2018. because I'm

  2019. a jar

  2020. of clay

  2021. and there

  2022. is a

  2023. creator

  2024. who's

  2025. created

  2026. and sustained

  2027. all of

  2028. us

  2029. the next

  2030. point

  2031. Andrew

  2032. the Christian

  2033. mind

  2034. regularly

  2035. reads

  2036. all of

  2037. God's

  2038. word

  2039. written

  2040. and

  2041. bows

  2042. to

  2043. what

  2044. it

  2045. says

  2046. the

  2047. Christian

  2048. mind

  2049. regularly

  2050. reads

  2051. all of

  2052. God's

  2053. word

  2054. written

  2055. and

  2056. bows

  2057. to

  2058. what

  2059. it

  2060. says

  2061. you

  2062. know

  2063. I just

  2064. want to

  2065. challenge

  2066. you

  2067. if you

  2068. haven't

  2069. read

  2070. all of

  2071. the

  2072. Bible

  2073. and

  2074. you've

  2075. been

  2076. a

  2077. Christian

  2078. for

  2079. a

  2080. few

  2081. years

  2082. you

  2083. know

  2084. talk

  2085. to

  2086. me

  2087. I'd

  2088. like

  2089. to

  2090. give

  2091. you

  2092. some

  2093. help

  2094. and

  2095. encouragement

  2096. but

  2097. you

  2098. should

  2099. try

  2100. to

  2101. have

  2102. it

  2103. a

  2104. goal

  2105. to

  2106. read

  2107. all

  2108. of

  2109. it

  2110. or

  2111. listen

  2112. to

  2113. all

  2114. of

  2115. it

  2116. one

  2117. of

  2118. the

  2119. wonderful

  2120. things

  2121. about

  2122. modern

  2123. technology

  2124. is

  2125. if

  2126. you

  2127. go

  2128. to

  2129. an

  2130. app

  2131. like

  2132. you

  2133. version

  2134. you

  2135. can

  2136. listen

  2137. to

  2138. God's

  2139. word

  2140. I

  2141. remember

  2142. 30

  2143. years

  2144. ago

  2145. you'd

  2146. have

  2147. to

  2148. spend

  2149. hundreds

  2150. of

  2151. dollars

  2152. to

  2153. buy

  2154. a

  2155. big

  2156. big

  2157. thing

  2158. that

  2159. was

  2160. like

  2161. this

  2162. of

  2163. cassettes

  2164. to

  2165. listen

  2166. to

  2167. God's

  2168. word

  2169. now

  2170. I

  2171. just

  2172. have

  2173. this

  2174. little

  2175. app

  2176. on

  2177. my

  2178. phone

  2179. and

  2180. often

  2181. when

  2182. I'm

  2183. driving

  2184. when

  2185. I'm

  2186. going

  2187. home

  2188. in

  2189. rush

  2190. hour

  2191. often

  2192. I

  2193. listen

  2194. to

  2195. the

  2196. Bible

  2197. and

  2198. I

  2199. encourage

  2200. you

  2201. to

  2202. hear

  2203. and

  2204. regularly

  2205. reads

  2206. all

  2207. of

  2208. God's

  2209. word

  2210. written

  2211. and

  2212. bows

  2213. to

  2214. what

  2215. it

  2216. says

  2217. and

  2218. almost

  2219. second

  2220. to

  2221. last

  2222. the

  2223. Christian

  2224. mind

  2225. longs

  2226. to

  2227. see

  2228. the

  2229. gospel

  2230. shared

  2231. especially

  2232. with

  2233. new

  2234. people

  2235. groups

  2236. the

  2237. Christian

  2238. mind

  2239. longs

  2240. to

  2241. see

  2242. the

  2243. gospel

  2244. shared

  2245. especially

  2246. with

  2247. new

  2248. people

  2249. groups

  2250. this

  2251. is

  2252. a

  2253. really

  2254. important

  2255. thing

  2256. for

  2257. the

  2258. Christian

  2259. mind

  2260. because

  2261. you

  2262. see

  2263. the

  2264. gospel

  2265. is

  2266. an

  2267. offense

  2268. to

  2269. our

  2270. mind

  2271. and

  2272. it

  2273. can

  2274. be

  2275. an

  2276. offense

  2277. get

  2278. lost

  2279. in

  2280. a

  2281. track

  2282. of

  2283. trying

  2284. to

  2285. have

  2286. a

  2287. Christian

  2288. worldview

  2289. and

  2290. one

  2291. of

  2292. the

  2293. ways

  2294. that

  2295. the

  2296. devil

  2297. can

  2298. knock

  2299. us

  2300. up

  2301. is

  2302. we

  2303. get

  2304. so

  2305. caught

  2306. up

  2307. with

  2308. our

  2309. Christian

  2310. thinking

  2311. but

  2312. at

  2313. the

  2314. end

  2315. of

  2316. the

  2317. day

  2318. the

  2319. gospel

  2320. is

  2321. offensive

  2322. regularly

  2323. to

  2324. us

  2325. you

  2326. mean

  2327. God

  2328. you

  2329. didn't

  2330. choose

  2331. me

  2332. because

  2333. I'm

  2334. going

  2335. to

  2336. be

  2337. such

  2338. a

  2339. great

  2340. pastor

  2341. you

  2342. didn't

  2343. choose

  2344. me

  2345. because

  2346. I'm

  2347. such

  2348. a

  2349. great

  2350. guy

  2351. you

  2352. didn't

  2353. choose

  2354. me

  2355. because

  2356. I

  2357. will

  2358. be

  2359. the

  2360. perfect

  2361. husband

  2362. I'm

  2363. not

  2364. or

  2365. the

  2366. perfect

  2367. dad

  2368. like

  2369. all

  2370. of

  2371. my

  2372. apparent

  2373. righteousness

  2374. is like

  2375. a filthy

  2376. rag

  2377. all

  2378. of

  2379. my

  2380. great

  2381. thinking

  2382. is like

  2383. nothing

  2384. unless

  2385. I give

  2386. myself

  2387. to

  2388. Jesus

  2389. who died

  2390. for me

  2391. and so

  2392. the

  2393. Christian

  2394. mind

  2395. has to

  2396. regularly

  2397. be

  2398. offended

  2399. by the

  2400. gospel

  2401. but not

  2402. just

  2403. offended

  2404. by the

  2405. gospel

  2406. want to

  2407. share

  2408. the

  2409. gospel

  2410. that's

  2411. partially

  2412. how you

  2413. deal

  2414. with

  2415. the

  2416. offense

  2417. of

  2418. the

  2419. gospel

  2420. is

  2421. want to

  2422. share

  2423. it

  2424. and

  2425. not

  2426. just

  2427. with

  2428. your

  2429. own

  2430. people

  2431. group

  2432. but

  2433. to

  2434. the

  2435. ends

  2436. of

  2437. the

  2438. earth

  2439. that's

  2440. what

  2441. Paul

  2442. talks

  2443. about

  2444. at

  2445. the

  2446. very

  2447. end

  2448. of

  2449. 2nd

  2450. Corinthians

  2451. 10

  2452. to

  2453. the

  2454. ends

  2455. of

  2456. the

  2457. earth

  2458. Andrew

  2459. could

  2460. you

  2461. put

  2462. the

  2463. closing

  2464. prayer

  2465. up

  2466. and

  2467. I

  2468. want

  2469. to

  2470. invite

  2471. you

  2472. all

  2473. to

  2474. stand

  2475. here's

  2476. what

  2477. the

  2478. thing

  2479. is

  2480. if

  2481. my

  2482. whole

  2483. sermon

  2484. was

  2485. around

  2486. trying

  2487. to

  2488. get

  2489. us

  2490. to

  2491. understand

  2492. that

  2493. Jesus

  2494. Christ

  2495. is

  2496. to

  2497. be

  2498. the

  2499. Savior

  2500. and

  2501. the

  2502. Lord

  2503. of

  2504. my

  2505. mind

  2506. from

  2507. its

  2508. deepest

  2509. depths

  2510. to

  2511. its

  2512. highest

  2513. heights

  2514. to

  2515. its

  2516. furthest

  2517. reaches

  2518. and

  2519. everything

  2520. in

  2521. between

  2522. and

  2523. that

  2524. it's

  2525. don't

  2526. be

  2527. afraid

  2528. of

  2529. this

  2530. of

  2531. Jesus

  2532. capturing

  2533. your

  2534. thoughts

  2535. don't

  2536. be

  2537. afraid

  2538. of

  2539. it

  2540. like

  2541. pray

  2542. for

  2543. it

  2544. take

  2545. steps

  2546. towards

  2547. it

  2548. encourage

  2549. each

  2550. other

  2551. towards

  2552. it

  2553. encourage

  2554. the

  2555. artists

  2556. to

  2557. have

  2558. a

  2559. Christian

  2560. mind

  2561. the

  2562. economists

  2563. the

  2564. government

  2565. types

  2566. the

  2567. philosopher

  2568. types

  2569. the

  2570. computer

  2571. programmers

  2572. the

  2573. scientist

  2574. types

  2575. the

  2576. ordinary

  2577. people

  2578. carpenter

  2579. types

  2580. to

  2581. encourage

  2582. them

  2583. to

  2584. seek

  2585. this

  2586. and

  2587. I

  2588. try

  2589. to

  2590. put

  2591. it

  2592. in

  2593. a

  2594. prayer

  2595. and

  2596. I'll

  2597. just

  2598. read

  2599. it

  2600. out

  2601. loud

  2602. you

  2603. to

  2604. pray

  2605. it

  2606. with

  2607. me

  2608. but

  2609. the

  2610. prayer

  2611. is

  2612. heavenly

  2613. father

  2614. you

  2615. have

  2616. given

  2617. me

  2618. your

  2619. son

  2620. to

  2621. be

  2622. my

  2623. savior

  2624. here's

  2625. the

  2626. scary

  2627. part

  2628. I

  2629. give

  2630. you

  2631. my

  2632. mind

  2633. please

  2634. tear

  2635. down

  2636. what

  2637. needs

  2638. to

  2639. be

  2640. torn

  2641. down

  2642. and

  2643. build

  2644. what

  2645. needs

  2646. to

  2647. be

  2648. built

  2649. so

  2650. that

  2651. with

  2652. all

  2653. of

  2654. my

  2655. mind

  2656. I

  2657. will

  2658. be

  2659. a

  2660. disciple

  2661. of

  2662. Jesus

  2663. gripped

  2664. by

  2665. the

  2666. gospel

  2667. living

  2668. for

  2669. your

  2670. glory

  2671. and

  2672. praise

  2673. in

  2674. Jesus

  2675. name

  2676. amen

  2677. for

  2678. those

  2679. who

  2680. have

  2681. never

  2682. given

  2683. their

  2684. lives

  2685. to

  2686. Jesus

  2687. this

  2688. can

  2689. be

  2690. your

  2691. birthday

  2692. prayer

  2693. your

  2694. coming

  2695. to

  2696. faith

  2697. prayer

  2698. and

  2699. maybe

  2700. when

  2701. you

  2702. say

  2703. mine

  2704. you

  2705. can

  2706. say

  2707. not

  2708. only

  2709. my

  2710. mind

  2711. Jesus

  2712. I

  2713. want

  2714. you

  2715. to

  2716. have

  2717. all

  2718. of

  2719. me

  2720. and

  2721. for

  2722. those

  2723. of

  2724. us

  2725. who

  2726. are

  2727. trying

  2728. to

  2729. just

  2730. become

  2731. more

  2732. like

  2733. Jesus

  2734. this

  2735. is

  2736. a

  2737. prayer

  2738. to

  2739. help

  2740. you

  2741. so

  2742. I

  2743. invite

  2744. you

  2745. now

  2746. to

  2747. pray

  2748. this

  2749. be

  2750. my

  2751. savior

  2752. I

  2753. give

  2754. you

  2755. my

  2757. please

  2758. tear

  2759. down

  2760. what

  2761. needs

  2762. to

  2763. be

  2764. torn

  2765. down

  2766. and

  2767. build

  2768. what

  2769. needs

  2770. to

  2771. be

  2772. built

  2773. so

  2774. that

  2775. with

  2776. all

  2777. of

  2778. my

  2779. mind

  2780. I

  2781. will

  2782. be

  2783. a

  2784. disciple

  2785. of

  2786. Jesus

  2787. gripped

  2791. living

  2792. for

  2793. your

  2797. in

  2798. Jesus

  2799. name

  2800. amen

  2801. Father

  2802. pour

  2803. out

  2804. your

  2805. Holy

  2806. Spirit

  2807. upon

  2808. us

  2809. help

  2810. us

  2811. to

  2812. give

  2813. you
