  1. We'll be in John chapter 5. You'll also see the words on the screen.

    John 5 chapter mention

  2. We've been thinking about seven signs that John records in his gospel that point to who Jesus is and why he came.

  3. So we come now to his fourth sign that he records.

  4. So John chapter 5. Let's hear God's word together.

    John 5 chapter mention

  5. Sometime later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals.

  6. Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda, and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades.

  7. Here a great number of disabled people used to lie, the blind, the lame, the paralysed.

  8. One who was there had been an invalid for 38 years.

  9. When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him,

  10. Do you want to get well?

  11. Sir, the invalid replied, I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred.

  12. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.

  13. Then Jesus said to him, Get up, pick up your mat and walk.

  14. At once the man was cured. He picked up his mat and walked.

  15. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath.

  16. And so the Jewish leader said to the man who had been healed, It is the Sabbath.

  17. The law forbids you to carry your mat.

  18. But he replied, The man who made me well said to me, Pick up your mat and walk.

  19. So they asked him, Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?

  20. The man who was healed had no idea who it was.

  21. For Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.

  22. Later, Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, See, you are well again.

  23. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.

  24. The man went away and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had made him well.

  25. So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him.

  26. In his defence, Jesus said to them, My father is always at work to this very day and I too am working.

  27. For this reason, they tried all the more to kill him.

  28. Not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own father,

  29. making himself equal with God.

  30. So our fourth sign, a healing at the pool of Bethesda.

  31. Whether you're listening today and you've been a Christian for a number of years, maybe even for decades,

  32. or if this is your first time visiting an online church,

  33. when we spend any time at all with Jesus in the Gospels,

  34. it is almost certain that he will take us by surprise,

  35. that sometimes he will perhaps even shock us.

  36. When we read his teaching,

  37. we discover here is someone with a great love for God and for people,

  38. somebody who taught about love and demonstrated love,

  39. but also someone who could talk equally clearly about the judgment of God.

  40. So nobody spoke about hell more than Jesus and we think,

  41. how do love and justice come together?

  42. And that surprises us.

  43. Maybe our surprise comes when we think about how he relates to other people.

  44. We see his patience, his kindness towards his disciples,

  45. even towards Judas who would betray him.

  46. Think about the way he welcomed the outsiders when everyone else would have been scandalised

  47. by spending time with some of the notorious people in Jesus' day.

  48. Jesus welcomed them and shared the good news with them.

  49. Perhaps our surprise and our shock comes when we think about the miracles of Jesus

  50. and we see him working in his world.

  51. Well, today in our story, Jesus says four things,

  52. four sentences, each of which I suspect when we stop and reflect,

  53. we might find it surprising and perhaps even shocking.

  54. That was certainly true for the first people that heard Jesus speak.

  55. So this is the fourth of seven signs and it takes us again to the heart of the signs

  56. and John's purpose for them.

  57. This sign will speak to the mission of Jesus.

  58. Again, we will see him on a mission of mercy,

  59. bringing good news of salvation.

  60. But it will also clearly point to his identity.

  61. Here is Jesus, the son of God,

  62. who is God's chosen and sent saviour for the world.

  63. And as we think about these surprising words of Jesus,

  64. let's be careful not to make the mistake of the man in the story.

  65. Thinking about how he relates to Jesus,

  66. in a sense he might remind us of a child on their birthday,

  67. grabbing for the gifts,

  68. with no attention given to the giver at all,

  69. just want the stuff.

  70. And I hope we'll all realise

  71. that we need more than simply a sign.

  72. We need more than Jesus giving us temporary help for our trouble.

  73. You and I need Jesus as our Lord and saviour,

  74. whoever we are today.

  75. So let's begin with the probing question that Jesus asks.

  76. The first six verses give us the setting

  77. and then we get Jesus' first word.

  78. So the setting is this pool,

  79. this pool of Bethesda.

  80. And perhaps you know of hospices or hospitals

  81. that go by the name of Bethesda,

  82. named after our story.

  83. Bethesda was a gathering place for sufferers.

  84. Many sufferers were there.

  85. It was a place that was sheltered from the hot sun.

  86. And there was also a belief that the pool

  87. had healing properties.

  88. And so people would gather waiting for it to bubble up.

  89. You might think of a leisure pool

  90. and that sense of anticipation,

  91. waiting for the wave machine to come on

  92. and the excitement.

  93. Well, imagine waiting for those bubbles

  94. in the hope that you're suffering.

  95. It might be over.

  96. So we're told in our story,

  97. there's this whole poolside of sufferers

  98. and Jesus takes the initiative

  99. to find out about one.

  100. One man who has been an invalid for 38 years.

  101. Now, if you know anything of Jesus,

  102. if you've heard any of his stories,

  103. you will expect to find in Jesus

  104. mercy and compassion for suffering people.

  105. And of course, it is true for us to remember

  106. that the heart of Jesus doesn't change.

  107. He still has mercy and compassion

  108. for suffering people today.

  109. But we come to his first words in verse six

  110. and maybe we ask ourselves,

  111. what kind of question is Jesus asking?

  112. He goes to speak to this man

  113. who's been an invalid for 38 years

  114. and he asked him,

  115. do you want to get well?

  116. That seems blindingly obvious

  117. that the man would want to get well.

  118. So why does Jesus ask the question?

  119. Well, when you read John's gospel,

  120. we recognise that Jesus often speaks

  121. on a higher, on a hidden level.

  122. So in chapter three,

  123. he speaks to a religious leader called Nicodemus

  124. and he says to him,

  125. you must be born again,

  126. by which he means you need a work of God.

  127. You need the spirit to come

  128. and change you from the inside out.

  129. But Nicodemus is thinking,

  130. hold on a minute,

  131. how can I go back into my mother's womb?

  132. That just doesn't make any sense.

  133. Or then in chapter four of John's gospel,

  134. he's speaking to a woman by the well

  135. and Jesus says that he can give living water

  136. and the woman looks around and says,

  137. hang on a minute,

  138. you don't even have a bucket.

  139. How can you possibly give me water?

  140. Jesus speaks at a higher and a hidden level.

  141. Well, here's this probing question,

  142. not a surface question,

  143. but a probing question to ask the man,

  144. and as we reflect,

  145. to ask ourselves to,

  146. what is it that you really want?

  147. Jesus is saying to the man,

  148. is it just healing you want?

  149. Or are you looking for something more?

  150. Can you see that your need runs deeper

  151. than simply the physical?

  152. Because bear in mind who is speaking.

  153. Bear in mind that it's Jesus who's asking the question.

  154. There's this growing tension in John's gospel.

  155. We've begun to see it with the signs.

  156. There are some people who are following Jesus

  157. only for the signs.

  158. They're here for the show

  159. or they're here because they're suffering

  160. and they want to get better

  161. or they want someone else to get better.

  162. So you've got people coming just for the signs

  163. while at the same time,

  164. they're opposing and rejecting Jesus and his word.

  165. Jesus wants the man

  166. and he wants each one of us to recognise

  167. Jesus is the son of God

  168. and what matters is believing in him

  169. and believing in his words

  170. and ultimately believing in the work

  171. that he came to do,

  172. that his death on the cross was a death

  173. for my sin,

  174. to save me

  175. and to give me eternal life.

  176. To recognise

  177. that Jesus can do far more for us

  178. than we ever realise.

  179. This physical healing that Jesus is about to do

  180. stands for us as a signpost

  181. for the still greater

  182. spiritual

  183. and eternal healing

  184. that Jesus can do in our hearts.

  185. And so that probing question

  186. is designed to get the man to that point.

  187. And what comes next?

  188. The next words of Jesus

  189. is a simple command.

  190. But first we see how the invalid

  191. replies to his question

  192. and he's thinking on the lower level

  193. as many people do

  194. when they talk to Jesus.

  195. I have no one to help me into the pool

  196. while I'm trying to get in.

  197. Someone else goes down ahead of me.

  198. Jesus,

  199. have you come to help me into the pool?

  200. Have you come to lift me

  201. and help me to beat the rush

  202. so I can be front of the queue?

  203. And what we discovered

  204. is Jesus come to do

  205. something far more remarkable

  206. than that.

  207. Here's the next words of Jesus.

  208. Get up,

  209. pick up your mat

  210. and walk.

  211. Now these are bold words.

  212. This is Jesus either

  213. incredibly heartless

  214. asking a paralysed man

  215. to do something he would love to do

  216. but can't by himself

  217. or

  218. powerful words of healing

  219. and transformation.

  220. And of course we discover

  221. in verse 9

  222. that it's that second

  223. that is true.

  224. at once

  225. the man was cured.

  226. He picked up his mat

  227. and walked.

  228. Instant healing.

  229. A 38 year disability

  230. gone.

  231. No need for the water.

  232. Here's a clear signpost

  233. that Jesus

  234. and Jesus alone

  235. is the source of help

  236. and hope.

  237. There are no secret words

  238. uttered over him.

  239. Nothing

  240. is magical about it.

  241. Jesus speaks

  242. a simple command

  243. and he's able

  244. to get up and walk.

  245. No doubt this man

  246. had dreamed of recovering

  247. his mobility

  248. and had probably

  249. after 38 years

  250. given up

  251. but Jesus

  252. has enabled him.

  253. Jesus has provided

  254. the strength

  255. for him

  256. to obey.

  257. Gives us an insight

  258. into

  259. the way faith

  260. works.

  261. The Bible

  262. is really honest.

  263. It says that

  264. by ourselves

  265. left to ourselves

  266. unless God intervenes

  267. we remain

  268. opposed to God.

  269. We turn our back

  270. on God.

  271. We are enemies

  272. of God

  273. spiritually dead

  274. and incapable

  275. of finding

  276. eternal life.

  277. So we need

  278. God

  279. to work

  280. and God

  281. by his grace

  282. enables us

  283. gives us

  284. the gift

  285. of faith

  286. so that we are

  287. able

  288. to believe.

  289. And we see

  290. a glimpse

  291. of that

  292. in this

  293. story.

  294. But here

  295. Jesus

  296. issues

  297. a simple

  298. command

  299. and the man

  300. is called

  301. to obey

  302. and when he

  303. obeys

  304. there's healing.

  305. There's a story

  306. in the Old Testament

  307. connecting water

  308. and healing.

  309. The story

  310. of a man

  311. called Naaman

  312. a powerful

  313. army commander

  314. from Syria

  315. who had it all

  316. but who also

  317. had leprosy.

  318. And his king

  319. sent him

  320. to Israel

  321. and eventually

  322. to the prophet

  323. Elisha

  324. for healing

  325. and Elisha's

  326. servant

  327. comes to Naaman

  328. and gives him

  329. a very simple

  330. command

  331. wash seven times

  332. in the Jordan

  333. and you will

  334. be healed.

  335. He can have

  336. the thing

  337. that he's looking

  338. for but Naaman

  339. rather than

  340. being delighted

  341. he's outraged.

  342. He's outraged

  343. because he's

  344. being asked

  345. to do something

  346. that's far

  347. too easy.

  348. His servants

  349. say to him

  350. look

  351. if you'd been

  352. told to climb

  353. a great mountain

  354. fight a great battle

  355. you would have

  356. done it.

  357. So why not

  358. do the simple

  359. thing

  360. believe

  361. and when he does

  362. he's healed.

  363. God's power

  364. changes him.

  365. When we read

  366. our Bibles

  367. now the Bible

  368. is a big book

  369. and it's a book

  370. about the eternal

  371. infinite

  372. God.

  373. So there are

  374. some big

  375. ideas that

  376. stretch our mind

  377. and in some ways

  378. are beyond us

  379. but Christianity

  380. at heart

  381. is a simple

  382. message

  383. calling

  384. for a response.

  385. We're told

  386. that Jesus'

  387. message

  388. was repent

  389. and believe

  390. the good news.

  391. Jesus is God's

  392. King who's come

  393. to bring in

  394. God's Kingdom

  395. there needs to be

  396. a change of heart

  397. and mind

  398. from us

  399. we need to put

  400. our trust

  401. in Jesus

  402. and what he came

  403. to do

  404. on our behalf.

  405. Later on

  406. in the New Testament

  407. a question is asked

  408. what must I do

  409. to be saved

  410. and the answer

  411. believe in the Lord

  412. Jesus

  413. and you will be saved.

  414. That's not

  415. complicated

  416. to understand.

  417. That the good news

  418. of God's love

  419. and God's grace

  420. and God's forgiveness

  421. that comes to us

  422. through faith

  423. in Jesus

  424. trusting in him

  425. it's not hard

  426. to understand.

  427. As John Newton

  428. the hymn writer

  429. and preacher

  430. from a previous

  431. generation

  432. summarised it

  433. I am a great

  434. sinner

  435. and Jesus

  436. is a great

  437. saviour

  438. and given

  439. those

  440. important

  441. truths

  442. we are then

  443. called

  444. to

  445. obey

  446. to

  447. receive

  448. the good news

  449. to receive

  450. Jesus

  451. as our

  452. saviour.

  453. Now moving

  454. from that

  455. simple

  456. command

  457. Jesus

  458. next words

  459. stand

  460. as a loving

  461. warning.

  462. So from

  463. verse 9

  464. onwards

  465. we begin

  466. to see

  467. a controversy

  468. opposition

  469. because of

  470. understandings

  471. of the

  472. Sabbath

  473. and we'll get

  474. there in a few

  475. minutes

  476. but

  477. important for us

  478. to notice

  479. that the picture

  480. that's being

  481. built up

  482. of our

  483. invalid

  484. here

  485. is not

  486. very flattering.

  487. You look at

  488. verse 7

  489. he misses

  490. Jesus'

  491. higher

  492. meaning

  493. about the

  494. healing that

  495. he offers

  496. which is

  497. spiritual

  498. not just

  499. physical.

  500. In verse 11

  501. to his

  502. escape

  503. the criticism

  504. of the

  505. religious leaders

  506. he points

  507. the finger

  508. of blame

  509. at Jesus

  510. it was

  511. Jesus

  512. that's making

  513. him pick up

  514. his mat

  515. and walk

  516. in verse 13

  517. we discover

  518. that he

  519. didn't even

  520. ask Jesus'

  521. name.

  522. He had no

  523. idea who

  524. Jesus was

  525. again to

  526. think about

  527. our child

  528. with no

  529. manners.

  530. Who's that

  531. present from?

  532. I don't know.

  533. I'm just

  534. tearing open

  535. the wrapping.

  536. And then in

  537. verse 15

  538. when he does

  539. discover

  540. that it was

  541. Jesus who

  542. healed him

  543. what does

  544. he do?

  545. He reports

  546. Jesus to

  547. the authority.

  548. So this is

  549. not a very

  550. flattering

  551. picture

  552. of our

  553. invalid

  554. and there's

  555. one last

  556. really important

  557. piece of

  558. information

  559. to consider

  560. and again

  561. it goes to

  562. the fact that

  563. Jesus' words

  564. can surprise

  565. and some

  566. things shock

  567. us.

  568. In verse 14

  569. Jesus found

  570. the man at

  571. the temple

  572. and said

  573. to him

  574. see

  575. you are

  576. well again

  577. stop sinning

  578. or something

  579. worse

  580. may happen

  581. to you.

  582. Now there's

  583. two implications

  584. one of

  585. which

  586. is that

  587. Jesus in

  588. some way

  589. is saying

  590. that the

  591. man's

  592. condition

  593. for 38

  594. years

  595. his

  596. suffering

  597. was in

  598. some way

  599. connected

  600. to sin

  601. in his

  602. life.

  603. Now we're

  604. not told

  605. what that

  606. sin was

  607. and why

  608. there was

  609. the consequence

  610. but we do

  611. know this

  612. is not

  613. normal.

  614. The Bible

  615. is not

  616. saying

  617. if you

  618. suffer

  619. it's

  620. because

  621. of sin.

  622. The religious

  623. leaders in

  624. Jesus'

  625. day they

  626. actually

  627. believed

  628. that.

  629. There was

  630. a man

  631. who was

  632. blind

  633. from birth

  634. and they

  635. asked

  636. the question

  637. well they

  638. presumed

  639. that either

  640. the man

  641. had sinned

  642. or his

  643. parents had

  644. sinned and

  645. Jesus said

  646. no no

  647. neither

  648. of that

  649. is true.

  650. And in

  651. the Bible

  652. we see

  653. that

  654. people who

  655. are gods

  656. who are

  657. not guilty

  658. have said

  659. they suffer

  660. we live in

  661. a broken

  662. and a fallen

  663. world and

  664. suffering

  665. happens.

  666. Someone like

  667. Job in

  668. the Old

  669. Testament

  670. described

  671. as a

  672. righteous

  673. man

  674. but he

  675. suffers.

  676. Think about

  677. Jesus himself

  678. the one

  679. sinlessly

  680. perfect

  681. man

  682. who

  683. ever

  684. lived

  685. and he

  686. suffered

  687. the

  688. greatest

  689. injustice

  690. he

  691. suffered

  692. he was

  693. the

  694. suffering

  695. servant

  696. the

  697. son of

  698. God

  699. rejected

  700. abused

  701. beaten

  702. and nailed

  703. to a

  704. cross

  705. sin.

  706. So we

  707. can't

  708. and we

  709. shouldn't

  710. always draw

  711. a straight

  712. line between

  713. suffering

  714. and sin

  715. but yet

  716. Jesus

  717. with his

  718. knowledge

  719. says in

  720. some way

  721. this man's

  722. suffering and

  723. sin are

  724. connected.

  725. But there's

  726. another pressing

  727. implication for

  728. us to

  729. consider

  730. and we're

  731. on much

  732. more solid

  733. ground with

  734. this one.

  735. Jesus in

  736. effect is

  737. saying to

  738. the man

  739. look I

  740. fixed your

  741. physical

  742. problem.

  743. but you

  744. still have

  745. a deeper

  746. problem.

  747. You have

  748. a spiritual

  749. problem.

  750. If a

  751. past sin

  752. has led

  753. to 38

  754. years of

  755. disability

  756. Jesus

  757. issues a

  758. loving

  759. warning

  760. that the

  761. sin of

  762. rejecting

  763. Jesus

  764. will lead

  765. to something

  766. worse

  767. will lead

  768. to

  769. eternal

  770. judgment

  771. judgment.

  772. Now Jesus

  773. is the

  774. most loving

  775. man who

  776. ever lived

  777. but here

  778. he issues

  779. a very

  780. obvious

  781. warning

  782. about

  783. judgment.

  784. Judgment

  785. is a

  786. reality

  787. and Jesus

  788. because of

  789. love

  790. sounds

  791. that

  792. warning.

  793. But what

  794. we see

  795. in the

  796. man's

  797. life

  798. stands

  799. in a

  800. sense

  801. as a

  802. warning

  803. sign

  804. to us.

  805. Here is

  806. a person

  807. who appears

  808. content

  809. to take

  810. the

  811. sign

  812. where

  813. Jesus

  814. heals

  815. him

  816. physically

  817. but he

  818. leaves,

  819. he rejects

  820. the

  821. saviour

  822. that the

  823. sign

  824. points

  825. to.

  826. So long

  827. as his

  828. body is

  829. better

  830. that's

  831. all he's

  832. after.

  833. Now let's

  834. make this

  835. personal.

  836. Think about

  837. your

  838. suffering,

  839. your

  840. trouble,

  841. your

  842. trials

  843. right now.

  844. What

  845. dominates

  846. your

  847. horizon?

  848. what is

  849. the

  850. suffering

  851. that you

  852. experience?

  853. Now perhaps

  854. that's

  855. loneliness.

  856. Loneliness

  857. because of

  858. lost

  859. relationships

  860. or

  861. relationships

  862. you'd

  863. love to

  864. have

  865. but don't

  866. have.

  867. Perhaps

  868. it's

  869. your

  870. health.

  871. Perhaps

  872. it's

  873. connected

  874. to your

  875. career.

  876. Things

  877. aren't

  878. panning

  879. out the

  880. way that

  881. you

  882. hope.

  883. There is

  884. great

  885. uncertainty.

  886. You

  887. feel

  888. unsatisfied.

  889. Now

  890. here's

  891. a

  892. question.

  893. If you

  894. could get

  895. relief

  896. from that

  897. suffering

  898. or trial

  899. that comes

  900. into your

  901. mind

  902. but you

  903. could have

  904. it without

  905. relationship

  906. with Jesus

  907. would you

  908. take that

  909. deal?

  910. If you

  911. had the

  912. relationship,

  913. if you

  914. had the

  915. health,

  916. if you

  917. had the

  918. job but

  919. without

  920. Jesus,

  921. would you

  922. take it?

  923. If Jesus

  924. could sort

  925. out your

  926. life but

  927. you'd

  928. still be

  929. left in

  930. your

  931. sin,

  932. would you

  933. be okay

  934. with that?

  935. Jesus

  936. wants us

  937. to think

  938. deeper and

  939. to think

  940. more

  941. eternally.

  942. This

  943. man seems

  944. to be

  945. happy with

  946. the

  947. surface

  948. to take

  949. the

  950. sign but

  951. not the

  952. saviour.

  953. God

  954. is

  955. the

  956. word of

  957. Jesus

  958. that we

  959. have

  960. in our

  961. section

  962. for today

  963. is the

  964. striking

  965. claim

  966. that he

  967. makes.

  968. In

  969. John

    John 5 chapter mention

  970. chapters

  971. 5-7 we

  972. see a

  973. growing

  974. controversy

  975. between

  976. Jesus

  977. and the

  978. religious

  979. leaders

  980. in

  981. particular

  982. but the

  983. Jews

  984. in

  985. general

  986. and one

  987. issue

  988. that keeps

  989. coming up

  990. in Jesus

  991. ministry is

  992. understanding

  993. of the

  994. Sabbath.

  995. What is

  996. work?

  997. The Old

  998. Testament,

  999. the Ten

  1000. Commandments,

  1001. one of the

  1002. commands was

  1003. to remember

  1004. the Sabbath

  1005. day,

  1006. to have a

  1007. day that

  1008. you took

  1009. off from

  1010. your normal

  1011. work,

  1012. a day set

  1013. aside for

  1014. God and

  1015. to worship

  1016. him.

  1017. But the

  1018. Jewish

  1019. leaders had

  1020. established

  1021. all kinds

  1022. of activities

  1023. that they

  1024. also classed

  1025. as work

  1026. and they

  1027. said you

  1028. cannot do

  1029. these things

  1030. and one

  1031. of them

  1032. was that

  1033. you couldn't

  1034. pick up a

  1035. mat and

  1036. walk and

  1037. so they

  1038. accused the

  1039. man of

  1040. Sabbath

  1041. breaking,

  1042. they accused

  1043. Jesus of

  1044. Sabbath

  1045. breaking.

  1046. Now here's

  1047. where things

  1048. get really

  1049. interesting.

  1050. We're told

  1051. in verse

  1052. 16 that

  1053. because Jesus

  1054. was doing

  1055. these things

  1056. on the

  1057. Sabbath he's

  1058. beginning to

  1059. be persecuted

  1060. now.

  1061. What does

  1062. he offer

  1063. as his

  1064. defence?

  1065. Not

  1066. let's sit

  1067. down and

  1068. let's look

  1069. at the Old

  1070. Testament and

  1071. let's see how

  1072. you misunderstand

  1073. what the

  1074. Bible teaches

  1075. about Sabbath.

  1076. No, he

  1077. says you

  1078. misunderstand

  1079. me.

  1080. You have

  1081. failed to

  1082. see that I

  1083. am Lord

  1084. of the

  1085. Sabbath.

  1086. Jesus said

  1087. to them my

  1088. father is

  1089. always at

  1090. work to

  1091. this very

  1092. day and

  1093. I too

  1094. am working.

  1095. God the

  1096. father works.

  1097. He is

  1098. constantly

  1099. sustaining the

  1100. universe and

  1101. he's not

  1102. Sabbath breaking

  1103. when he does

  1104. that and

  1105. Jesus says

  1106. just like my

  1107. father I

  1108. too am

  1109. always working.

  1110. I'm doing

  1111. God's work

  1112. of restoring

  1113. and redeeming

  1114. of bringing

  1115. mercy and

  1116. love and

  1117. life and

  1118. their response

  1119. to that.

  1120. Verse 18

  1121. for this

  1122. reason they

  1123. tried all

  1124. the more

  1125. to kill

  1126. him because

  1127. they understand

  1128. here Jesus

  1129. is claiming

  1130. equality with

  1131. God as

  1132. his father

  1133. and they

  1134. hate him

  1135. for that.

  1136. And Jesus

  1137. comes and

  1138. he says

  1139. you now

  1140. have to

  1141. understand

  1142. what it

  1143. means that

  1144. there's only

  1145. one God

  1146. in a new

  1147. way because

  1148. you need

  1149. to understand

  1150. God by

  1151. reference to

  1152. Jesus who's

  1153. come as the

  1154. full and

  1155. complete revelation

  1156. of God

  1157. in the flesh

  1158. and they are

  1159. unwilling to

  1160. consider that.

  1161. Now let's

  1162. put all this

  1163. together.

  1164. Here we have

  1165. Jesus who is

  1166. equal with

  1167. God and

  1168. who is on

  1169. a mission

  1170. of mercy

  1171. and he

  1172. comes sounding

  1173. both a

  1174. promise and

  1175. a warning

  1176. that this

  1177. sign, this

  1178. healing says

  1179. I can provide

  1180. true and

  1181. lasting healing,

  1182. I can provide

  1183. the forgiveness

  1184. that leads to

  1185. eternal life but

  1186. here's the

  1187. warning, you

  1188. need to see

  1189. your deepest

  1190. need.

  1191. Maybe during

  1192. lockdown, I

  1193. know this has

  1194. been lots of

  1195. people's experience,

  1196. praying, you've

  1197. been praying

  1198. more than you

  1199. ever have.

  1200. Maybe for the

  1201. first time in

  1202. your life you

  1203. find yourself

  1204. praying because

  1205. you are aware

  1206. of your need

  1207. for personal

  1208. recovery and

  1209. we're all really

  1210. aware of the

  1211. need for national

  1212. recovery.

  1213. But you know

  1214. this sign says

  1215. to us go

  1216. deeper still,

  1217. don't just

  1218. settle for a

  1219. return to

  1220. normal,

  1221. Jesus is

  1222. inviting us to

  1223. come to him

  1224. for personal

  1225. salvation, to

  1226. pray for

  1227. national

  1228. spiritual

  1229. transformation.

  1230. Jesus has

  1231. come to do

  1232. his work, to

  1233. do his

  1234. father's work

  1235. which will

  1236. take him to

  1237. the cross to

  1238. die for

  1239. sinners so

  1240. that if we

  1241. put our

  1242. trust in

  1243. him, we

  1244. won't face

  1245. judgment but

  1246. we'll have

  1247. eternal life,

  1248. that we'll get

  1249. to know and

  1250. enjoy Jesus

  1251. and God

  1252. the father

  1253. now with

  1254. the hope of

  1255. enjoying him

  1256. and his

  1257. presence for

  1258. all eternity.

  1259. That's the

  1260. true healing

  1261. we're to

  1262. pursue and

  1263. if we want

  1264. that healing,

  1265. the healing of

  1266. a restored

  1267. relationship of

  1268. peace with

  1269. God, of

  1270. freedom from

  1271. guilt and

  1272. fear, we

  1273. need to get

  1274. up and we

  1275. need to go

  1276. to Jesus.
