  1. Okay, good morning, everybody.

  2. That's not bad, not bad.

  3. Today we're continuing our series in Proverbs, and again, we're going to do a tag team approach.

  4. Oscar's going to be sharing for part of the session.

  5. I'm going to be sharing as well for part of the sermon.

  6. And really, one of the hearts of what we're trying to do as Watermark is to be able to

  7. use different gifts to develop and to grow as God moves us on, and as we raise up and

  8. develop leaders and people who can preach in different ways.

  9. And so it's very much some of the heart of what we're trying to do as a church, which

  10. is why we have different people preaching at different times.

  11. This sermon, how many of you thought there was going to be a typhoon today?

  12. Okay, there's a few people.

  13. We're talking today about planning, and I think it's totally ironic because we were going to

  14. talk about this sermon last week.

  15. And then a typhoon 8 comes in and completely messes up all of my plans.

  16. My whole sermon series has been changed completely because God seems to know that we need a life

  17. lesson sometimes in what planning looks like and the sovereignty of God looks like in our

  18. lives.

  19. And I don't know about you, but actually, a lot of the struggles that I think we have in

  20. faith in our lives are actually because of that collision between our plans and what God

  21. seems to be doing in the world, right?

  22. You see, I've got a really good friend.

  23. Seven years, he was planning language learning, planning, gathering a team to go and do mission

  24. work in Kurdistan in Iraq.

  25. Seven years.

  26. Finally, he'd got the team together.

  27. He'd got everything together.

  28. It spent a lot of time, a lot of effort.

  29. And then a few months before, his wife gives birth to a child, and the child has Down syndrome.

  30. And they're unable to go after seven years.

  31. And those questions come, well, it was supposed to be for you, God.

  32. So what's going on here?

  33. Why do you sometimes, God, seem to interrupt the plans, even the very good plans that we

  34. seem to make?

  35. And sometimes, I don't know about you, but we ask those questions which are, well, if

  36. God is really good, why has he let this happen?

  37. Why has he not worked things out the way that I thought they were going to work out?

  38. And so that's kind of what we're going to have a little look at today in terms of how God

  39. works in our lives through these plans and what he's up to in the world.

  40. So if I can ask you a question, what's your plan for your life?

  41. What's your plan for your life?

  42. Some of you may say, I have no idea.

  43. But if I asked you, in 20 years' time, where would you like to be?

  44. What would you like to be doing?

  45. How many kids would you like to have?

  46. Would you like to be married or single?

  47. How much money?

  48. What level of comfort?

  49. What would you like to happen in your family?

  50. Those are things which actually tell you what your plan for your life is.

  51. That's your vision for where you want to go in life.

  52. And so we're looking at this book of Proverbs, and we're looking at what it means to have

  53. chokmah.

  54. Do you remember chokmah?

  55. Chokmah is the word for wisdom.

  56. It's a world where there isn't a formula, a kind of plug-and-play formula for how to live.

  57. And there are many situations, we just don't have a set answer.

  58. The Bible doesn't kind of say, okay, go to page three, and there you go.

  59. You're going to be able to sort out all your problems in life.

  60. It doesn't work quite like that.

  61. And we need chokmah.

  62. We need this wisdom which comes out of a healthy fear in this relationship with God, getting

  63. Him in the right place in our lives to enable us to be able to navigate the complexities

  64. of life.

  65. So in this series, we've talked about a number of things.

  66. Two weeks ago, we talked about affirmation, okay?

  67. And we talked about using our words.

  68. Who was here two weeks ago?

  69. Who was here two weeks ago?

  70. About five of you admit to being here.

  71. We talked about how God wants us to be wise with our words.

  72. We talked about three to one ratio in terms of affirmation and correction.

  73. And I asked you to go and affirm someone who you don't normally go and affirm.

  74. How do we do with that?

  75. Anyone do that?

  76. Because we want to be people who don't just hear the word.

  77. We want to be people who actually do the word.

  78. And actually, I went out and I decided I was going to contact a relative of mine to just

  79. encourage her.

  80. And I was going to WhatsApp her, just some things that I'd noticed.

  81. And suddenly, as I got to WhatsApp, I realized I was really nervous about WhatsAppping her.

  82. And I realized that having the wisdom that God wants for the words that I use is totally unnatural

  83. in so many ways.

  84. And God calls us as a church to be this church of wisdom in our words, in our friendships,

  85. in our relationships, and in our plans.

  86. And today, God is going to say to you, He wants you not just to hear His word, He actually

  87. wants you to do His word.

  88. So, let me just pray for us.

  89. Let me just pray for us.

  90. And I want you to pray in your heart as well.

  91. Father, I don't just want to listen to Your word.

  92. I don't just want to hear words.

  93. I want to hear from You.

  94. And Father, I pray that with the words that I speak, Lord, we would not just, and Oscar

  95. speaks, we would not just be talking, but Lord, this would create life in our hearts and

  96. You'd change us so that we live out in a way which is consistent with what You say and call

  97. us to.

  98. In Jesus' name, amen.

  99. So, we're looking at plans.

  100. Okay, have your bulletin with you because we're going to go through some of the passages

  101. here.

  102. And we're going to look at God's plan and our plans.

  103. We're going to go look at God's heart and our heart.

  104. We're going to look at God's love and our confidence.

  105. Okay?

  106. So, God's plan, our plans to start with.

  107. One of the really interesting things in the Bible is it contains some very hard truths.

  108. Let me give you one very hard truth.

  109. The world is not about you.

  110. The world is not about you.

  111. It's about God and it's about His glory.

  112. The sun doesn't orbit around us.

  113. We orbit around the sun.

  114. In the beginning, Chris, is not how the Bible starts.

  115. It starts in the beginning, God.

  116. And though everything in me wishes that I was in charge of my life, the Bible story is that

  117. God is working out a plan.

  118. And He's working out a plan of flourishing and redeeming and restoring a broken creation.

  119. And He invites us to be involved and part of His plan.

  120. And the question is, how do we get involved with His plan?

  121. Well, Proverbs 21 verse 5 says this.

    Proverbs 21:5

  122. The plans of the diligent lead surely to advantage.

  123. But everyone who is hasty comes surely to poverty.

  124. Okay?

  125. The word diligent means someone who's strategic.

  126. They plan.

  127. They think through things.

  128. Someone who is hasty is impulsive.

  129. They do things just according to their own feelings at the time.

  130. And what He's saying is this.

  131. He's saying, what you plan has consequences in your life.

  132. Okay?

  133. What you plan has consequences.

  134. You don't go into parenting or go into a war just saying, I'm just going to wing it.

  135. Okay?

  136. That's not a good strategy.

  137. That's not a good plan.

  138. We have to plan.

  139. Now, our culture kind of looks at this and it says, in the words of Invictus, you know the poem Invictus?

  140. It says, I am the master of my fate.

  141. I am the captain of my soul.

  142. Which is, I mean, we like that kind of thing.

  143. Right?

  144. We want to believe that we have this kind of, the free will to decide our lives.

  145. And our plans are kind of the way that we shape our future.

  146. We can act.

  147. We can do.

  148. We can make it happen.

  149. You know, that's why we kind of love these rags to riches stories.

  150. Or why we love, you know, movies about rats who become top chefs.

  151. And one's about geeky celebrities who then, geeky kind of whatever, who become celebrities through talent competitions.

  152. Because we want to believe that our plans, like, you can do anything.

  153. You can follow your dreams.

  154. Just plan your way and you'll make it happen.

  155. Does anyone else's life revolve around your Google calendar and your to-do lists?

  156. Because we can sometimes believe that our life is fully worth living if we've achieved everything we've done on our to-do list.

  157. We believe we are the masters of our fate.

  158. But it's quite interesting that, although some people think there's free will, other people will say, well, life is just determined.

  159. Okay?

  160. It's just fixed.

  161. You know, there's quite a few brain scientists now who believe these kind of things.

  162. And whether it's a God or the spirits or our DNA, they say, well, this has decided how you're going to live.

  163. You know, we say things like, the fortune teller told me that this year was going to be a bad year.

  164. And I reshaped my office.

  165. I put in a water feature to get better feng shui.

  166. But no matter what I've done, bad luck is happening to me.

  167. It's just determined.

  168. It's fixed.

  169. It's fate.

  170. So some of us think it's all about free will.

  171. Some of us think it's determined.

  172. Proverbs 16, 31 says, the lot is cast into the lap, but it's every decision is from the Lord.

  173. It's every decision is from the Lord.

  174. Casting lots is a bit like tossing a coin.

  175. You know, you toss a coin, you know, you have a tennis match.

  176. You toss the coin to see who's going to start first.

  177. Right?

  178. And what Proverbs is saying here is that even who's deciding first who's going to play at Wimbledon is under God's sovereign hand.

  179. Every little detail of my life is ultimately going to work out in some way how God has planned it.

  180. The fact that you're here this morning is under God's great plan.

  181. The fact that my printer broke down is in some way under God's great plan.

  182. And the fact that you're here this morning, I don't think anyone put a gun to your head.

  183. I hope they didn't.

  184. Okay?

  185. That's not a great way to get people to service.

  186. But we made a choice to come here.

  187. But in some way, God is working through our choices to work out his plan.

  188. And what it is, it's a bit like having a rope like this on a pulley.

  189. And at one end of the pulley is my actions have consequences and I have freedom.

  190. And the other end of the pulley is, well, God is completely in control of every aspect.

  191. And it's difficult.

  192. I can't put those two things together.

  193. Intellectually, I don't know how it works.

  194. Because either I think I've got freedom or I think it's fixed.

  195. I can't put them together.

  196. But the Bible says you've got to hold those both in tension.

  197. It says, many are the plans in the mind of man, but the purpose of the Lord will stand.

  198. I plan the sermon series.

  199. God's not going to plan the sermon series for me.

  200. The typhoon hits and the outcome is under his control.

  201. And you see, the thing that we struggle with is if you just try and hold one end of the rope

  202. and you don't hold the other end of the rope, life becomes actually impossible to live.

  203. If you think that life is completely on God's autopilot and it's just fully determined,

  204. you just become passive, you know, and you become cynical and become bored with life.

  205. Why do I need to send out CVs to get the job?

  206. Well, God's going to provide.

  207. Right?

  208. Or worse, some people say, I know I committed adultery, but God made me do it.

  209. Really?

  210. You see, we don't take responsibility for what God has given us.

  211. But on the other hand, if it's all on you, that's really scary.

  212. Really scary.

  213. My best friend, when he was younger, he tried desperately to get a girl to marry him.

  214. Who, looking back, would have been a disaster for him to marry.

  215. Like, complete disaster.

  216. And Tim Keller, pastor in the States, says,

  217. Imagine you looking back in your life to whether you were a teenager or in your 20s,

  218. depending on how old you are.

  219. Think about the ratio of the goodness of your plans.

  220. Probably about two-thirds of my plans were bad plans when I was a teenager.

  221. Right?

  222. Now, the question is, the more frightening question is,

  223. what's the percentage for you now?

  224. How good are your plans now?

  225. Maybe I've improved a little bit.

  226. Maybe I'm kind of at 50% good planning.

  227. But still, if the planning is all on you,

  228. then our lives, we can screw up our lives really easily.

  229. But the Bible says, if you hold both of those ropes together,

  230. God's totally in control, but you have free choices in what you make to make,

  231. then there is a freedom to live well.

  232. You know, in the Bible, there's the story of Joseph.

  233. You know the story of Joseph?

  234. Joseph.

  235. You know, he's the favorite kid of his father.

  236. He has dreams about his family bowing down to him,

  237. and he tells all his family,

  238. and it just annoys his brothers so much that they want to go and kill him.

  239. So they go and throw him in a pit,

  240. but eventually they change their minds and decide to sell him to slave traders.

  241. Gets down to Egypt, and he's a great worker,

  242. but he's thrown into prison anyway.

  243. He's waiting, doesn't know what's going on in his life.

  244. But eventually, the whole plan comes through where he becomes second in command in Egypt.

  245. Yeah, you know the story?

  246. And you know what's really interesting is that at the end of the story,

  247. his dad dies, his brothers come back to him,

  248. and they're really terrified about what he's going to say.

  249. And they say to him,

  250. Hey, please give us mercy for how we treated you.

  251. And Joseph, with incredibly great grace, says to them,

  252. he says in Genesis 50, 20, he says,

  253. You meant this for harm, but God meant this for good.

  254. You meant this for harm, but God meant this for good.

  255. You were planning something evil.

  256. God was working something bigger and greater.

  257. You know, just for the ordinary things in life,

  258. I signed up for a new broadband package just this last week.

  259. It was my choice, okay?

  260. I chose it.

  261. But the company has tried to mess me around all this week,

  262. and then last night, two hours late,

  263. they turned up at my house to try and install it,

  264. and they arrived at 11 p.m.,

  265. and they didn't leave till midnight last night.

  266. And it's driving me nuts,

  267. because I've got to preach this morning,

  268. and I want to get some sleep.

  269. Was God in control?

  270. Absolutely.

  271. Absolutely.

  272. But have I made choices?

  273. Absolutely.

  274. But is God going to work in me

  275. and wanting to change me in some way through this?

  276. In my frustration and anger, absolutely.

  277. So I'm going to pass over to Oscar

  278. to share a little bit more about God's heart.

  279. Thank you.

  280. Guys, ever seen WWF wrestling?

  281. Like tag team?

  282. Yeah.

  283. Leo's seen it.

  284. Yeah.

  285. Leo's laughing.

  286. Morning.

  287. Morning.

  288. Great.

  289. The microphone is enthusiastic.

  290. So as Chris explained,

  291. it is fundamentally good for us to plan.

  292. God, in his infinite wisdom,

  293. has given us the ability and responsibility

  294. to plan for our lives

  295. and for the lives under our care.

  296. But I think the challenge for me

  297. and perhaps for some of you here

  298. is that oftentimes we have the wrong motivation

  299. behind our plans.

  300. Proverbs 16.1 says,

  301. The plans of the heart belong to man,

  302. but the answer of the tongue is from the Lord.

  303. Plans of the heart belong to man.

  304. Our plans, our desires,

  305. our future intentions,

  306. they come from the heart, don't they?

  307. If you've been to Watermark for any period of time,

  308. you probably hear us talk about the heart a lot.

  309. We teach about actions, what we do,

  310. words, what we say,

  311. but we emphasize the heart

  312. because everything that happens outwardly,

  313. it comes from within.

  314. Our actions and our words,

  315. they stem from our heart,

  316. the core of our inner person,

  317. source of our will and our desires.

  318. But as Jeremiah says,

  319. the heart is deceitful above all things

  320. and desperately sick.

  321. Who can understand it?

  322. The heart is deceitful above all things.

  323. You can hear the pain in Jeremiah's voice.

  324. He's talking about the people of Judah.

  325. They had seen and heard the goodness of God

  326. for hundreds and hundreds of years.

  327. Their forefathers had told them

  328. the faithfulness of God.

  329. And at time and again,

  330. they turned their back on their father

  331. and they went and worshiped idols.

  332. It made no sense.

  333. It's totally illogical.

  334. But as Jeremiah says,

  335. the heart is deceitful.

  336. This is the human condition.

  337. We are prone to do things

  338. that benefit ourselves.

  339. We are inclined to serve ourselves,

  340. to make plans that put us number one.

  341. A few weeks ago, my wife Celeste,

  342. a few months ago now actually,

  343. my wife Celeste asked me

  344. if I still had plans to run my own hedge fund,

  345. start my own hedge fund.

  346. I've been in this business for a number of years.

  347. I love what I do.

  348. I'm passionate about it.

  349. I love going to work every single day.

  350. And so she logically asked me this question.

  351. And I think if she asked me five years ago,

  352. I would have said,

  353. 100%, totally.

  354. I want to do it.

  355. Be my own boss.

  356. But you know,

  357. as I've thought about this

  358. in recent times,

  359. you know what I've realized?

  360. My motivations weren't that pure after all.

  361. He wanted to run my own hedge fund

  362. because I wanted to be the boss.

  363. I didn't want to have to report to somebody.

  364. I wanted my name on the door.

  365. And to be honest,

  366. I also wanted to be able to work from home

  367. so I can see my daughter every day.

  368. You know,

  369. there's nothing inherently wrong

  370. with running a hedge fund

  371. or being a CEO

  372. or a leader in the political world,

  373. in government or in academia.

  374. Nothing wrong with planning your career either.

  375. I think the issue that I have,

  376. and maybe for some of you today,

  377. is when we pray to the Lord about our plans,

  378. our prayer is,

  379. God, this is what I want.

  380. These are my plans.

  381. God, please help me to get where I want to go.

  382. But our prayer should be,

  383. Father, what are your plans for my life?

  384. What do you want from my career?

  385. And how can I fit into your plans

  386. so that I can do your work?

  387. One way to check or test our hearts

  388. is to ask ourselves,

  389. if I didn't have this career,

  390. would I still be content?

  391. Would I still be able to say that God is good?

  392. And then there's the aspect of trusting God

  393. with our plans,

  394. which is so important.

  395. We can make a plan today,

  396. tomorrow.

  397. We don't know the outcome.

  398. One year down the line,

  399. we don't know the outcome.

  400. We didn't even know we could be at church today.

  401. Thank God the weather's okay, though.

  402. Planning typically involves

  403. some aspect of the unknown,

  404. of uncertainty.

  405. That is why trusting God is so important.

  406. Proverbs 3, 5 and 6,

  407. trust in the Lord with all your heart

  408. and lean not on your own understanding.

  409. I think if you've been a Christian

  410. for any amount of time,

  411. you probably know this verse.

  412. Trust God.

  413. Pastors love to say it.

  414. Elders love to say it.

  415. It's probably one of the most commonly used directives

  416. from Christian to Christian.

  417. Trust God.

  418. But what does that mean to trust God?

  419. What does it look like?

  420. Proverbs 16, 3.

  421. Commit your works to the Lord

  422. and your plans will be established.

  423. Commit your works to the Lord.

  424. Commit.

  425. The word commit,

  426. the word commit

  427. literally means to roll.

  428. As in to roll a ball

  429. away from yourself,

  430. out of your hands,

  431. out of your control,

  432. and into the control of another.

  433. Like you roll a bowling ball

  434. down the alley

  435. and it's out of your hands

  436. and in the hands of

  437. gravity and air conditioning.

  438. What the passage is saying here

  439. is that if we

  440. commit our works to God,

  441. if we surrender our plans to Him,

  442. God begins to shape our planning.

  443. And this is where the wisdom

  444. of Proverbs comes in.

  445. Through the wisdom of God,

  446. our planning improves.

  447. We're better at planning.

  448. Our plans become more efficient,

  449. more orderly,

  450. and we start to plan

  451. what God wants for us,

  452. not only what we want for ourselves.

  453. For some of us,

  454. our plans become

  455. a weight on our shoulders,

  456. a ball and chain

  457. around our ankles.

  458. So if we can release

  459. that ball

  460. and roll it to God,

  461. a weight is released

  462. and a lightness

  463. and a peace

  464. and a freedom

  465. is what comes out of that.

  466. How many parents

  467. do we have in the room?

  468. Parents?

  469. Lots of parents,

  470. don't we?

  471. Yes.

  472. My wife Celeste and I,

  473. we have a 17-month daughter

  474. named Kiva.

  475. In the past two years,

  476. I think I've had more conversations

  477. about family planning

  478. and raising children

  479. than I've had

  480. in the combined 30 years

  481. of my life.

  482. It's such a huge topic, right?

  483. And if you're a parent

  484. here this morning,

  485. God has given you

  486. a precious gift.

  487. God has entrusted

  488. His child

  489. into your hands.

  490. And as parents,

  491. we have an active responsibility

  492. to take care of our children

  493. and part of that

  494. is planning.

  495. And in Hong Kong,

  496. especially,

  497. a huge part of that planning

  498. relates to schooling,

  499. doesn't it?

  500. You know what I'm talking about

  501. if you're a parent here, right?

  502. We all spend a fair amount

  503. of time

  504. researching schools,

  505. doing school site visits,

  506. talking to other parents

  507. about schools,

  508. networking

  509. to increase the probability

  510. of getting into schools.

  511. My daughter's only 17 months old

  512. and I've done

  513. all of those things already.

  514. I admit to you.

  515. And I also admit to you

  516. that it's tough.

  517. I get anxious.

  518. I get worried.

  519. Will my daughter Kiva

  520. get into school in Hong Kong?

  521. I don't know.

  522. If she's as smart as my wife,

  523. then yes,

  524. I think she will.

  525. But will she survive

  526. the school system in Hong Kong?

  527. It's tough, right?

  528. The stress,

  529. the pressure.

  530. The question that I ask myself

  531. and maybe you should ask yourself is,

  532. do we commit the planning,

  533. do we roll the planning

  534. of our kids schooling to God

  535. and do we surrender that to Him?

  536. For example,

  537. when we pray,

  538. I think a lot of us probably

  539. pray for our children

  540. to get into school.

  541. But when we pray,

  542. is our prayer simply,

  543. Father,

  544. Father,

  545. please help little David

  546. get into GSIS or CIS.

  547. That's a good prayer.

  548. That's a fine prayer.

  549. But it's only half the prayer.

  550. You know,

  551. rather,

  552. we should be praying,

  553. Father,

  554. please help little David

  555. get into GSIS.

  556. But also,

  557. we should pray,

  558. Lord,

  559. I know you're a good God.

  560. Lord,

  561. I know you're sovereign.

  562. I know you're a faithful God.

  563. You have proven your love to me

  564. through the Bible,

  565. the Word of God,

  566. through my life,

  567. through even giving me a child.

  568. I know you're faithful,

  569. Lord,

  570. so I commit,

  571. I roll this plan to you,

  572. Lord.

  573. I surrender to you,

  574. Father.

  575. Father,

  576. I've done my responsibility.

  577. Now it's in your hands.

  578. You know,

  579. there's an old,

  580. there's an old TV show

  581. in the 80s

  582. called The A-Team.

  583. Anybody ever see The A-Team?

  584. Yeah,

  585. Ed's seen The A-Team,

  586. yeah.

  587. I was made into a movie

  588. a few years ago

  589. starring Liam Neeson

  590. and Bradley Cooper.

  591. The basic storyline

  592. of The A-Team

  593. is that there's a team

  594. of former soldiers

  595. and they are part

  596. of The A-Team

  597. and in each episode,

  598. effectively,

  599. they have this elaborate plan

  600. to outwit the bad guys

  601. and they typically do

  602. every single episode

  603. outwit the bad guys

  604. and at the end

  605. of each episode,

  606. Hannibal,

  607. the leader of The A-Team,

  608. he lights up a cigar,

  609. takes a puff,

  610. leans back in his chair

  611. and says,

  612. I love it

  613. when a plan comes together.

  614. But it never always

  615. happens that way,

  616. does it?

  617. life has a way

  618. of surprising us

  619. and in some cases,

  620. life throws us

  621. massive curveballs

  622. that we totally

  623. never prepared for.

  624. I became an elder

  625. of Watermark

  626. a year and a half ago

  627. and when I became

  628. an elder of Watermark,

  629. I didn't verbalize

  630. a lot of stuff

  631. but in my head,

  632. I had plans.

  633. Yeah,

  634. it was going to be

  635. a smooth job,

  636. really great,

  637. you know,

  638. no problems,

  639. no heartache,

  640. no difficulties,

  641. no challenges.

  642. Why was I wrong?

  643. I didn't plan

  644. for our lead pastor,

  645. Tobin,

  646. who Celeste and I

  647. are very close to,

  648. to have to go back

  649. to the U.S.

  650. I didn't plan for us

  651. to have to leave

  652. our community center

  653. because the rent

  654. went up three times.

  655. I didn't plan for us

  656. to have to move

  657. from Satterport

  658. to Ebenezer.

  659. And I admit to you

  660. this morning

  661. that there were times

  662. when I would come home

  663. from elder meetings

  664. and I'd tell my wife,

  665. I don't know

  666. what's going on,

  667. I'm worried.

  668. I'm not sure

  669. if our staff

  670. will be able

  671. to go to the office

  672. next week

  673. because we may not

  674. be able to pay our rent

  675. because they've increased

  676. their rent so much.

  677. Many of you here today

  678. have plans,

  679. you've made plans.

  680. And for many of you today,

  681. your plans

  682. also haven't worked out

  683. exactly as you wanted.

  684. for some of you,

  685. maybe you plan

  686. a certain financial

  687. security level

  688. or career.

  689. But as housing prices

  690. in Hong Kong

  691. continue to go up

  692. year after year,

  693. you're like,

  694. I still can't buy a house?

  695. That wasn't part

  696. of your plan,

  697. was it?

  698. And you're frustrated.

  699. Maybe for people here

  700. who are single,

  701. you've wanted to be married

  702. for a very long time

  703. and you've been praying

  704. to the Lord

  705. and nothing's happened

  706. and you're also frustrated.

  707. But you know what?

  708. And I acknowledge

  709. this is not

  710. that easy to swallow.

  711. But you know,

  712. in our multi-year journey

  713. as Christians,

  714. some of our plans

  715. are going to go

  716. very smoothly.

  717. But others,

  718. for some of our other plans,

  719. the outcome

  720. is going to be

  721. the exact opposite

  722. of what we had hoped

  723. and desired

  724. from the beginning.

  725. But instead of seeing

  726. these things

  727. as bad things,

  728. I just want to encourage

  729. you guys today,

  730. let's use opportunities

  731. to learn and grow.

  732. We actually want to be

  733. in a place

  734. where we have to say,

  735. Lord,

  736. I can't do this.

  737. I cannot figure this out

  738. with my own intellect.

  739. I cannot fix this

  740. with my own hands.

  741. I surrender this to you.

  742. I roll this challenge

  743. to you, God.

  744. Because, you know,

  745. it's through these experiences

  746. that God can teach us.

  747. He can restore

  748. our broken hearts.

  749. The heart, right?

  750. Maybe He needs

  751. to humble us.

  752. He does all these things

  753. to change us,

  754. to shape us,

  755. to shape our hearts,

  756. so that we can be used

  757. to do His work.

  758. For me,

  759. as an elder of Watermark,

  760. you know,

  761. I've learned so much

  762. in the past 18 months.

  763. Firstly,

  764. I've learned

  765. that I lack faith.

  766. But also,

  767. I've learned

  768. how amazing God is,

  769. how much He's provided

  770. for this church.

  771. You know,

  772. we're not perfect, right?

  773. I'm not saying

  774. that we are.

  775. If we were perfect,

  776. we wouldn't even have

  777. to come to church

  778. on Sunday morning, right?

  779. What I see is today,

  780. we're still meeting.

  781. I see the community

  782. is blossoming.

  783. New friendships

  784. are forming.

  785. We have a community lunch

  786. happening today.

  787. I see God at work.

  788. You know,

  789. what I realize

  790. is that

  791. God is infinitely bigger

  792. than my biggest impression

  793. of Him.

  794. And when I look forward,

  795. I have confidence in Him

  796. because of the amazing

  797. faithfulness

  798. that He has shown us.

  799. So the final question

  800. for us

  801. before I hand it back

  802. to Chris is,

  803. you know,

  804. will you allow God

  805. to teach you something

  806. about Himself

  807. when your plans blow up,

  808. when they don't go

  809. as you expected,

  810. when the opposite happens?

  811. You know,

  812. just as in a marriage

  813. relationship,

  814. a husband and wife

  815. continually seek,

  816. should continually seek,

  817. to learn more

  818. about each other

  819. as they grow

  820. in their journey

  821. as a married couple.

  822. And in the same way,

  823. in our journey

  824. as Christians,

  825. you know,

  826. the beauty

  827. of being a Christian

  828. is that

  829. God uses

  830. good things

  831. and bad things,

  832. good experiences,

  833. bad experiences,

  834. triumphs and tragedies

  835. to teach us

  836. about Himself,

  837. about His goodness,

  838. about His character.

  839. The God of the universe

  840. has said

  841. that I know you

  842. and He's asking us,

  843. do you want to know me?

  844. Let me hand it back

  845. to Chris.

  846. Thank you, Oscar.

  847. Thank you, Oscar.

  848. So we've looked at actually

  849. God's plans,

  850. our plans,

  851. the heart

  852. of how God

  853. changes us

  854. and wants to use us.

  855. And I want to just

  856. kind of,

  857. for the final point,

  858. to really think

  859. about God's love

  860. and our confidence

  861. in this

  862. because

  863. the call to trust

  864. to roll everything

  865. to Him

  866. is a call

  867. to total surrender.

  868. That means

  869. I acknowledge

  870. my responsibility

  871. to plan

  872. in life

  873. and make decisions,

  874. but I also acknowledge

  875. that my plans

  876. are not ultimate.

  877. and John Newton,

  878. a writer

  879. of Amazing Grace,

  880. he prayed this

  881. beautiful prayer

  882. of surrender.

  883. He said,

  884. Lord,

  885. what you will,

  886. when you will,

  887. how you will.

  888. What you will,

  889. when you will,

  890. how you will.

  891. You know what

  892. I tend to pray?

  893. For my internet connection.

  894. Lord,

  895. what I will,

  896. good broadband.

  897. When I will,

  898. now.

  899. How I will,

  900. in the smoothest

  901. possible way

  902. at my total convenience.

  903. Amen.

  904. But you see,

  905. even though it's

  906. a silly little example,

  907. we do that

  908. in all of our lives

  909. because some of us

  910. put so much weight

  911. on certain of our plans.

  912. A kid's getting

  913. into certain schools,

  914. as he said.

  915. The internet company

  916. turning up.

  917. Whatever it is,

  918. that when it doesn't

  919. happen,

  920. it's not just

  921. disappointing,

  922. it can be devastating

  923. to us because

  924. we've lent so much

  925. on those plans

  926. because we believe

  927. that's where our future

  928. is held.

  929. Because our plans

  930. can become our saviour,

  931. our plans can become

  932. our hope,

  933. our plans can become

  934. our security.

  935. And if we get that,

  936. that's when we feel

  937. like life's happening.

  938. And if we don't,

  939. we feel like life

  940. has failed.

  941. But you see,

  942. the surrendered life

  943. is one where we become

  944. the kind of person

  945. who is able to make

  946. wise decisions.

  947. We should love our kids,

  948. but when we make our plans

  949. for them ultimate,

  950. what happens is,

  951. don't we often end up

  952. being so controlling,

  953. trying to make them

  954. who we want them to be,

  955. that actually it can be

  956. devastating for the emotional

  957. health of your kids.

  958. Have you seen that

  959. so many times?

  960. Because you see,

  961. trust means I plan,

  962. but I say,

  963. here's what I want,

  964. but what you will,

  965. when you will,

  966. how you will.

  967. And here's the key thing.

  968. The degree to which

  969. you know God's love for you

  970. is the degree to which

  971. you will surrender to Him.

  972. Did you get that?

  973. The degree to which

  974. you know God's love for you

  975. is the degree to which

  976. you will surrender to Him

  977. because you can see

  978. that He is trustworthy.

  979. Because God interrupts

  980. our plans to show us

  981. that we're not in control

  982. because He wants to reshape

  983. the way you view His love.

  984. Because, do you know,

  985. nobody ever knows

  986. that God loves them

  987. just by being told

  988. that God loves you.

  989. You know that?

  990. I can tell you

  991. God loves you a hundred times,

  992. and it may intellectually

  993. you say yes, yes, yes,

  994. but it will only go down here

  995. if God shows you

  996. in your life

  997. how much He loves you.

  998. Because you see,

  999. for Joseph,

1000. God could have come in

1001. and He could have fixed

  1002. everything for him.

  1003. Right?

  1004. You know,

  1005. He could have gone,

  1006. Jacob, okay,

  1007. here's a parenting book.

  1008. Okay?

1009. Joseph, just keep your mouth shut.

  1010. Okay?

  1011. Brothers,

1012. just kind of quit the jealousy,

  1013. and in 15 minutes

1014. could have all been done.

  1015. Fixed the whole thing

  1016. for Joseph.

1017. Why doesn't God do that?

  1018. Because, you know,

  1019. He could do that

  1020. with your plans.

  1021. He could fix everything

  1022. right now.

  1023. You know that?

  1024. He could change everything.

  1025. Why doesn't He?

  1026. Because if you look

  1027. as Oscar's story showed,

  1028. as Joseph's story shows,

  1029. that through the trials

  1030. and the frustrations,

  1031. Joseph learned

  1032. to trust God

  1033. through this experience,

1034. and he knew God's presence

  1035. walking with him

1036. every step of the way.

1037. And at the end of the story,

  1038. he has now changed

1039. from being an arrogant kid

  1040. to being somebody

  1041. who was so gracious

1042. to the brothers that he had

1043. that he could have been,

  1044. could have hurt

1045. so much in his life.

  1046. And through it,

  1047. he could look back

  1048. and see,

1049. wow, God has loved me

  1050. all the way through.

1051. And that's what He wants

1052. to do in your life.

1053. Sometimes you can't see now

  1054. how He's loving you,

1055. but it's only when you get

1056. to the end of the story

  1057. that you look back

  1058. and say,

  1059. wow, I can see

  1060. how He loved me.

  1061. Because He's growing us.

  1062. I wouldn't have planned

  1063. many of the illnesses

  1064. I've had,

  1065. I wouldn't have planned

  1066. the failures I've had,

  1067. but actually what God

  1068. is doing,

  1069. He's taking my fingers

  1070. off the steering wheel

1071. and He's wanting to say,

1072. I know how to steer

  1073. this thing better

  1074. than you do.

  1075. Tim Keller,

  1076. again, he says,

  1077. any parent knows

  1078. that at some point

  1079. your child

1080. is going to look at you

  1081. when you withhold

  1082. something from them.

  1083. And when you don't

  1084. let your child

  1085. have something

  1086. which they really want,

  1087. they're going to

  1088. turn around to you

  1089. and look at you

  1090. and say,

  1091. you don't love me.

  1092. Right?

  1093. And when that happens,

  1094. He says,

  1095. he says,

  1096. as a parent,

  1097. you've got to try

1098. not to kind of blow up

  1099. and get angry

1100. because you want to say,

  1101. how dare you?

  1102. You want to say,

  1103. you have no idea

1104. of what I've done for you.

  1105. You have no idea

  1106. of the sacrifice

1107. I've put in from your life.

  1108. You've no idea

  1109. the things I've withheld

  1110. to raise you.

  1111. You have no idea.

  1112. If you knew

  1113. all that I'd done,

  1114. you would never question

  1115. my motive

  1116. from withholding

  1117. that from you.

  1118. If you knew

  1119. that I had sacrificed

  1120. for you so much,

  1121. you would know

  1122. that I have a loving purpose

  1123. from withholding

  1124. from you right now.

  1125. in Acts 4,

  1126. Jesus is crucified

  1127. by the deliberate plan

  1128. and choice

  1129. of the Jews

  1130. and the Romans

  1131. and the Bible says

  1132. even it's what

  1133. we would have done

  1134. because we want

  1135. to plan our lives

1136. and we want to be

1137. in control of our lives

1138. and we want it all

  1139. to work according

  1140. to my regime.

  1141. But the Bible says

1142. it was actually working out

  1143. according to God's

  1144. predetermined plan.

  1145. You see,

  1146. Jesus goes into

  1147. the garden of Gethsemane

1148. before he's about to die

  1149. and he says,

  1150. he says,

  1151. God,

  1152. I don't like this plan.

  1153. He says,

  1154. this hurts.

  1155. He says,

  1156. can I get out

  1157. of this some way?

  1158. I don't want to

1159. have to take the weight

  1160. of the outcome

  1161. of all of your

  1162. and my plans

  1163. which have been

  1164. for my selfishness.

  1165. I don't want to take

  1166. the outcome

  1167. of their rebellious

  1168. plannings on myself

1169. and this is the son of God.

1170. This is the perfect human.

  1171. This is the one

  1172. who did everything right

  1173. but then he says

1174. in a moment of surrender

  1175. he says,

  1176. but not my will

  1177. but yours be done.

  1178. He says,

  1179. I know you're good.

  1180. I says,

1181. I know you love me

  1182. and your plan

  1183. is so much greater

  1184. than what I feel

  1185. right at this moment

  1186. because so many,

  1187. every one of us

  1188. in this room

  1189. is the result

  1190. of his surrender.

  1191. if you have turned

  1192. to Christ,

  1193. your relationship

  1194. with God

  1195. is as a result

  1196. that he was willing

  1197. to put God's plan

  1198. before his own.

  1199. On the cross,

  1200. what's the last thing

  1201. that Jesus says?

  1202. What's the last thing

  1203. he says?

  1204. It's a quote

  1205. he says,

  1206. it's a quote

  1207. from Psalm 31.

  1208. He says,

  1209. into your hands

  1210. I commit,

  1211. I roll,

  1212. my spirit.

  1213. it wasn't just

  1214. his kids' education.

  1215. It wasn't just health.

  1216. It wasn't just career.

1217. It was his very life.

  1218. See,

  1219. that's what he paid

  1220. to secure your future

  1221. for you.

1222. He paid with his own blood.

  1223. That means your plans

  1224. do not determine

  1225. your future.

  1226. His surrender did.

1227. Which is why right now

  1228. God's calling you

  1229. to roll his plans

  1230. to him.

  1231. Because if there's anybody

  1232. you can trust

  1233. with your life,

  1234. you can trust him

  1235. more than you can

  1236. trust yourself.

  1237. D.L. Moody said this.

  1238. I'm going to finish.

  1239. Sorry.

1240. Let God have your life.

1241. He can do more with it

  1242. than you can.

  1243. I like that.

1244. Let God have your life.

1245. He can do more with it

  1246. than you can.

1247. Some of us have placed

1248. the weight of our decisions

1249. and the weight of our lives

  1250. on our plans

  1251. and we're paralyzed

  1252. to make decisions.

  1253. Because we want certainty

  1254. that everything's going

  1255. to work out.

1256. Some of you are in that

  1257. situation right now.

  1258. You know,

  1259. I remember before

  1260. I started dating Fiona.

  1261. I was in indecision

  1262. for a long time.

  1263. I wanted a sign.

  1264. I thought an angel

  1265. would come down

  1266. and say to me,

  1267. do not be afraid,

  1268. Chris.

  1269. She is the one.

  1270. I didn't.

  1271. But God did speak

  1272. to me very clearly

  1273. and he said,

1274. stop looking for a sign.

  1275. He said it through

  1276. some friends.

  1277. He said,

  1278. okay,

  1279. is she godly?

  1280. Do you have,

  1281. can you be friends?

  1282. Is there a sense

  1283. of commonality together?

  1284. Do you like her?

  1285. I was like,

  1286. okay, yeah.

  1287. And he said,

  1288. now you've got

  1289. a decision to make.

1290. Stop trying to make it

  1291. all about God

  1292. having to make

  1293. the decision for you.

  1294. Because that's

  1295. my responsibility

  1296. to walk out

  1297. prayerfully,

  1298. prayerfully saying,

  1299. God,

1300. I want to honor you.

1301. I want with your heart.

  1302. But actually,

  1303. I've got to make

  1304. a decision.

  1305. God's not going

1306. to make it for me.

  1307. Right?

  1308. Some of you

  1309. are at that point

  1310. and you'll say,

  1311. what does God

  1312. want me to do?

  1313. And he's saying,

  1314. just do something.

  1315. Do something.

  1316. But some of you

  1317. are angry

  1318. because God

  1319. doesn't seem

  1320. to have kept

  1321. your plans

  1322. the way you thought.

  1323. He's turned

  1324. your world upside down

  1325. and you,

  1326. things just haven't

  1327. worked out

1328. as the way you wanted.

  1329. There's cancer,

  1330. there's health issues,

1331. there's all kinds of things

  1332. and you secretly wonder,

  1333. does God really care?

  1334. You secretly wonder,

  1335. is there something

  1336. wrong with me?

  1337. Maybe God is punishing

  1338. me for something.

  1339. And what God

  1340. wants to tell you

  1341. right now,

  1342. what the Father

  1343. wants you to know,

1344. he wants you to say,

  1345. it's grace that I've

  1346. overridden your plans.

  1347. And you say,

1348. how can it be grace?

  1349. And he'll say,

  1350. you know,

  1351. when this movie ends,

  1352. even though the scene

1353. you're in right at the

  1354. moment seems bleak,

1355. when you get to the end,

  1356. you'll see and you'll

1357. look back and you'll see,

  1358. wow, that's what

  1359. you're up to.

  1360. That's what you're up to.

  1361. And he's leading you

  1362. right now to say,

1363. will you take your hands

1364. off the reign of your life

1365. and will you trust me?

  1366. What you will,

  1367. when you will,

  1368. how you will.

1369. Some of us right now

  1370. are waiting,

  1371. we're in a waiting game

  1372. and you feel like

  1373. nothing's happening

1374. in your life right now.

  1375. You know,

  1376. God in your weight

  1377. is working in you

  1378. to make you

  1379. the kind of person

  1380. he can entrust

  1381. with your future.

1382. So will you trust him?

1383. So I want us just

  1384. to stop and pray.

  1385. And I want you

  1386. to think right now,

1387. what is it that I'm

  1388. planning this week?

  1389. What is it that's

  1390. kind of wrapping up

  1391. my mind right now?

  1392. What are the plans

1393. that I have in my,

1394. that I'm so dead set

  1395. on at the moment?

  1396. Am I saying

  1397. what I will,

  1398. when I will,

  1399. how I will,

1400. and God just kind of,

  1401. just bless my plans

  1402. or are you willing

  1403. to surrender those things

  1404. and start saying,

  1405. God,

  1406. I really want this.

  1407. God,

  1408. I want this relationship.

  1409. God,

  1410. I want this health.

  1411. God,

  1412. I want this job.

  1413. But Lord,

  1414. I'm tempted to complain.

  1415. I'm tempted to doubt

  1416. your love

  1417. if I don't get this.

  1418. Give me the grace

  1419. right now

  1420. to be thankful.

  1421. Help me to see

  1422. your love in this

  1423. because I don't see it

  1424. at the moment.

  1425. Lord,

  1426. I surrender to you

  1427. what you will,

  1428. when you will,

  1429. how you will.

  1430. So just bring that

  1431. now before God.

  1432. I just give you a minute

  1433. for the Spirit

  1434. just to touch you,

1435. just to open up your hands

1436. as a sign of surrender

  1437. to him.

  1438. Maybe there's something

1439. specific you just right now

  1440. need to give him.

  1441. You've been angry

  1442. and frustrated.

  1443. That's a sign

  1444. you've been trying

  1445. to hold the control

  1446. of your life.

  1447. If you're worried,

1448. just roll it to him.

1449. Just roll it to him

  1450. because he loves you.

  1451. He says,

  1452. get off the throne

  1453. of your life.

  1454. Turn to me.

  1455. Never mind

1456. You need to talk to me.

  1457. I know

  1458. that you might

  1459. like this.

  1460. He was

  1461. talking to

  1462. theлект

  1463. that you might

  1464. know what he is

  1465. and the

  1466. move the

  1467. which

  1468. takes

  1469. .

1470. Jesus, thank you that you surrendered your life for us.

1471. Because of that, our future is secure.

  1472. Our past is redeemed.

  1473. Our present is held.

1474. And we can trust you.

1475. Forgive us where we try and make everything about ourselves.

1476. Help us to see you, Lord, where our plans, so often we make them about ourselves.

1477. And they can be devastating for others.

1478. But I pray, Lord, that you just keep us rolling it to you.

1479. Help us to trust you.

  1480. And to love you.

  1481. In Jesus' name.

  1482. Amen.
