  1. Father, pour out your Holy Spirit upon us.

  2. Pour out your Holy Spirit upon us.

  3. Father, you know how sometimes we are afraid of your word,

  4. that we're embarrassed by your word,

  5. that we wince at your word.

  6. And Father, you know that about us.

  7. And Father, we thank you that you still speak,

  8. that you still love us, that you speak the truth.

  9. Father, help us to trust you and to trust your word.

  10. And may your word come into our lives

  11. and bear much fruit for your great glory.

  12. And all this we ask in the name of Jesus,

  13. your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  14. Please be seated.

  15. So, a couple of weeks ago,

  16. one of the people that I talk to in the coffee shop all the time,

  17. and we often have lots of disagreements,

  18. he was puzzling over a complicated quote

  19. that he'd found from Aristotle.

  20. and he asked me over and he said to me,

  21. he said,

  22. George, you're a wise and learned man.

  23. Can you help me to understand this?

  24. And I just sort of, I thought about that

  25. and I said to him,

  26. well, I appreciate the compliment,

  27. but I'm actually a fool in recovery,

  28. not a wise and learned man.

  29. I was thinking of what the book of Proverbs warns you about,

  30. thinking of being wise.

  31. I was thinking of 1 Corinthians,

  32. how God makes foolish the wisdom of the world,

  33. and I was thinking of Romans 1,

  34. and how in our foolishness,

  35. we want to exchange the glory of God for idols.

  36. And so I said,

  37. I'm a fool in recovery.

  38. Anyway,

  39. I appreciated the comment.

  40. I mention that because

  41. today we're going to look at this story

  42. in Genesis chapter 1.

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  43. It's the easiest story to find in the Bible.

  44. You just go to the beginning.

  45. It's Genesis 1.

  46. And, you know,

  47. you look at this story

  48. and a lot of Christians nowadays,

  49. we really wince with this.

  50. We're very, very uncomfortable with it.

  51. And not only are we uncomfortable with it,

  52. we are uncomfortable

  53. because we know a little bit about biology.

  54. We've probably all been through biology in high school.

  55. And, well, I mean, you know,

  56. in our back of our mind,

  57. we think to ourselves,

  58. how can there be light

  59. when the sun and the stars haven't been created?

  60. How come light's created

  61. before the sun and the stars?

  62. And how come there's day and night

  63. before there's sun

  64. and even really a planet?

  65. So how can there be days

  66. before there's even a planet?

  67. And how come

  68. vegetation is created on the third day

  69. and the sun

  70. is created on the fourth day?

  71. And it doesn't make any biological,

  72. agricultural sense.

  73. And so we're just very uncomfortable with it.

  74. Some of us will maybe read

  75. very, very, very, very, very clever Christians

  76. who try to show

  77. how this is just a way

  78. to describe almost scientifically

  79. how things came to be.

  80. But in our heart of hearts,

  81. we might say,

  82. gosh, that's awfully clever.

  83. However,

  84. but it doesn't really work

  85. apart from all your cleverness.

  86. And so if we're honest,

  87. as I said in my prayer,

  88. we feel a little bit uncomfortable

  89. when it comes to a text like this.

  90. It wouldn't be a text

  91. that we'd want to share

  92. with our coworkers

  93. and do a Bible study around.

  94. If we're honest,

  95. we'd be very, very, very uncomfortable about it.

  96. And so it's hard.

  97. So that's one of the reasons

  98. I mentioned that I'm a recovering fool

  99. because it's almost,

  100. I'm going to talk a little bit

  101. about what we talked about last week

  102. to try to deal with some of this foolishness,

  103. but it's like we forget it.

  104. So here's the first thing

  105. as we start to look at this text.

  106. A couple of years ago,

  107. I had a conversation,

  108. once again, in a coffee shop.

  109. I actually don't talk to anybody

  110. if they're not in a coffee shop.

  111. I don't know if you know that about me.

  112. So if you want to talk to me,

  113. go to a coffee shop.

  114. I'll talk to you.

  115. No.

  116. It's the easiest way for me

  117. to have conversations

  118. with non-Christians, I guess,

  119. just because of my personality.

  120. And anyway, so I had a conversation,

  121. which is, I don't know how it came up.

  122. I mentioned something about trees

  123. being a renewable resource.

  124. I think it's because

  125. I was using a cardboard cup.

  126. True confessions,

  127. when I go to coffee shops,

  128. I like the cardboard cups.

  129. I never get the, you know,

  130. the more eco-friendly ones,

  131. but that's a whole other.

  132. I hope I haven't now made you all

  133. really mad at me by sharing that.

  134. But, so I think I made some comment

  135. about, you know,

  136. trees are a renewable resource.

  137. And the barista, he said,

  138. no, they're not.

  139. And I said, well,

  140. I mean, I know it's a slow resource,

  141. but you know, you plant a tree

  142. and it grows.

  143. And so it's always renewable.

  144. There's lots of land to grow trees

  145. and you just keep growing trees.

  146. And even if you cut them down,

  147. you can just keep planting trees.

  148. And she said, no,

  149. it's not a renewable resource

  150. and they don't plant trees in Canada.

  151. I didn't make a face.

  152. I have a tiny, tiny, tiny bit

  153. of people skills

  154. which occasionally peak out.

  155. But I said to him,

  156. I said, my oldest son,

  157. for eight years,

  158. he was a tree planter.

  159. Like, that's how he graduated

  160. from university with no debts.

  161. Like, he went in northern Ontario

  162. and northern BC

  163. and he planted trees.

  164. And he said, no,

  165. nobody does that.

  166. So at that point in time,

  167. there's no point

  168. talking any further with them, right?

  169. Like, the person's an idiot.

  170. Sorry.

  171. Now, here's the question.

  172. Is Moses an idiot?

  173. It's a good question.

  174. I'm just going to take it for now

  175. that Moses is the primary author

  176. of the book of Genesis.

  177. I'm not going to get into authorship.

  178. It's actually technically,

  179. it doesn't say that Moses wrote it.

  180. There are other reasons

  181. why it might or might not be Moses.

  182. But let's just say,

  183. I'm going to just say

  184. for the sake of argument

  185. that Moses wrote it,

  186. whether he adapted an older story

  187. or not doesn't really matter.

  188. But the question is,

  189. is Moses an idiot?

  190. You see, the reason

  191. that's a very, very good question

  192. to ask is,

  193. my guess is this.

  194. My guess is that Moses

  195. knows vastly less

  196. than anybody here

  197. about biology.

  198. Okay?

  199. But, you know,

  200. he probably knows

  201. way more than just about

  202. anybody here

  203. about how things grow.

  204. And one of the things

  205. he would have known

  206. is that if you go

  207. into a dark cave,

  208. you don't see vegetation.

  209. Like, we might have people

  210. who don't understand

  211. that trees grow.

  212. You know,

  213. because we're in

  214. post-modern,

  215. you know,

  216. Canada.

  217. We might have people

  218. who have problems with that

  219. because we're sort of

  220. distant from nature.

  221. But Moses would have

  222. known that.

  223. Like, it would have

  224. dawned on him

  225. that if you don't

  226. have a light,

  227. like you go into a cave,

  228. you go into a dark room,

  229. you can't grow a tree

  230. or grass in a dark room.

  231. He would have known that.

  232. So why do you write it?

  233. Isn't that a good

  234. question to ask?

  235. You see,

  236. because the subtle

  237. way that we approach

  238. the scripture

  239. is we're very influenced

  240. by the skepticism

  241. of much of our culture.

  242. And so we sort of

  243. assume that Moses,

  244. just because he lived

  245. at a time before

  246. there were flush toilets

  247. or Instagram,

  248. doesn't mean he was stupid.

  249. Right?

  250. Or any person

  251. who's an older writer.

  252. Doesn't mean they're stupid.

  253. So,

  254. we just take that

  255. as a bit of a clue

  256. that maybe there's

  257. something else

  258. going on in this text.

  259. Maybe there's something

  260. else going on

  261. in this text.

  262. In fact,

  263. I talked about that

  264. a little bit last week

  265. and I'm going to talk

  266. about it a little bit more.

  267. What I would say

  268. is actually science

  269. with one important

  270. qualification,

  271. the more we learn

  272. about science,

  273. the more we learn

  274. about astronomy,

  275. the more we learn

  276. about biology,

  277. the more we learn

  278. about geology,

  279. the more we learn

  280. about these things,

  281. the easier it is

  282. and the more truthfully

  283. we can read God's word.

  284. I mean,

  285. just a very,

  286. very simple example,

  287. like,

  288. I don't know,

  289. 2,000,

  290. 2,500 years ago,

  291. whenever it talks

  292. about the sun rising,

  293. I don't know,

  294. they probably,

  295. I don't know,

  296. maybe they did think

  297. literally the sun rose,

  298. that the earth

  299. was sort of static

  300. and the sun rose

  301. and then went

  302. and, I don't know,

  303. underneath it

  304. and then came back

  305. up the next day.

  306. But they didn't actually

  307. you know,

  308. it's interesting,

  309. in the Bible,

  310. they don't have any

  311. theories about how

  312. things like that work.

  313. They just say

  314. the sun rises

  315. or the sun moves

  316. across the sky

  317. and nothing in science

  318. disproves the fact

  319. that from our point of view

  320. the sun rises,

  321. does it?

  322. Like,

  323. nothing that's been

  324. discovered scientifically

  325. disproves that the sun

  326. or the stars

  327. or the moon move

  328. from our perception,

  329. if you think about it.

  330. So,

  331. when science

  332. discovers more

  333. and more things,

  334. when humans

  335. understand more

  336. and more things,

  337. all it means is

  338. we can understand

  339. a little bit more

  340. about the Bible,

  341. but it doesn't change

  342. the fundamental insight,

  343. does it,

  344. that from our point of view

  345. the sun rises?

  346. That if somebody

  347. was to,

  348. if you were to say

  349. the sun rose this morning

  350. and somebody was to

  351. beat you up scientifically

  352. about it,

  353. you'd just think

  354. they were a jerk,

  355. right?

  356. Because it's just

  357. the way we human beings

  358. talk.

  359. So,

  360. it's,

  361. with a qualification,

  362. you know,

  363. nothing in the,

  364. that,

  365. you know,

  366. most of the language

  367. in the Bible,

  368. science doesn't disprove

  369. any of it,

  370. it just helps us

  371. to understand it.

  372. And so,

  373. what I'm also going

  374. to suggest is

  375. not only if we think

  376. for a second

  377. that Moses probably

  378. wasn't an idiot

  379. and that he probably

  380. knew a few things

  381. about the need

  382. for sunlight

  383. for things to grow,

  384. then the other thing

  385. is that as we know

  386. more and more

  387. about science,

  388. it helps us

  389. to actually try

  390. to figure out

  391. some of the other

  392. puzzles or riddles

  393. about this text.

  394. Because,

  395. you know,

  396. maybe Moses

  397. wouldn't have understood

  398. about things like

  399. the sun and the stars

  400. and the sky

  401. because he didn't

  402. know certain science,

  403. but now that we

  404. know more science,

  405. it just helps us

  406. to understand what's

  407. more,

  408. like to help to read

  409. the text more accurately.

  410. So,

  411. Andrew,

  412. if you could put

  413. the first point up,

  414. this is a really

  415. important point

  416. for us to get.

  417. If we don't get this,

  418. we won't understand

  419. Genesis 1 to,

  420. verse 1 to 2,

  421. 3.

  422. God does not need

  423. a process or a timeline

  424. to create.

  425. He speaks and what

  426. he wills is created

  427. with all of its heights

  428. and depths,

  429. fine-tuned intricacy

  430. and backstory.

  431. This is really important,

  432. okay?

  433. I mean,

  434. you know,

  435. God can do whatever

  436. he wants.

  437. He's God.

  438. You know,

  439. if he wants to create

  440. the universe,

  441. he wants to take,

  442. you know,

  443. 1,623,000 steps,

  444. that's fine.

  445. He can do it.

  446. He's a big boy.

  447. He makes up his own mind.

  448. He decides.

  449. And we should just go,

  450. wow.

  451. Right?

  452. But he doesn't have

  453. to do that.

  454. He doesn't have

  455. to use any steps.

  456. And he doesn't have

  457. to rest.

  458. And he doesn't have

  459. to work with

  460. certain materials

  461. to get one thing done

  462. before he gets

  463. another thing done.

  464. Like,

  465. none of those things

  466. apply to God

  467. if we understand

  468. that God can create,

  469. just as we're going

  470. to see in a moment,

  471. that it says

  472. six different times,

  473. more than six different times

  474. that God speaks it is.

  475. God speaks it is.

  476. God speaks it is.

  477. God speaks it is.

  478. God speaks it is.

  479. It's all the way

  480. through the text.

  481. God speaks.

  482. It is.

  483. So God does not need

  484. a process

  485. or a timeline

  486. to create like we do.

  487. We need processes

  488. and timelines.

  489. But God doesn't need that.

  490. He doesn't use it.

  491. He just speaks

  492. and what he wills,

  493. there it is.

  494. And there it is

  495. with all of its heights

  496. and depths

  497. and fine-tuned intricacy

  498. and backstory.

  499. So,

  500. some of you are wondering,

  501. George,

  502. are you trying to just

  503. sort of make it look

  504. like we don't have

  505. to try to think

  506. that there's some conflict

  507. between evolution

  508. and between this story?

  509. I'm not trying

  510. to do that at all.

  511. Some of you,

  512. or if you were here

  513. last week,

  514. you remember me

  515. telling you the story

  516. of Keith Booth.

  517. This is really,

  518. really an important thing.

  519. I know I'm going to tell it

  520. to you twice,

  521. two weeks in a row.

  522. I might even tell it

  523. to you three weeks in a row

  524. because next week

  525. we're going to look

  526. at the second creation story

  527. in Genesis 2.

  528. And our problem is

  529. we say,

  530. oh yeah,

  531. yeah,

  532. yeah,

  533. that's a really good idea.

  534. And then when it's,

  535. then the next week comes

  536. and we look at the story

  537. and we forget all

  538. about the story.

  539. We forget all about

  540. the point that I was

  541. trying to make.

  542. So here's the point

  543. for those of you

  544. who weren't here

  545. and those of you

  546. maybe don't remember.

  547. So in 1998,

  548. the spring of 1998,

  549. it's the NBA playoffs.

  550. It's the sixth game.

  551. The Bulls have

  552. the greatest basketball player

  553. who's ever played basketball

  554. in the history of the game.

  555. His name is Michael Jordan.

  556. He's coming up

  557. to his mid-30s.

  558. He is unbelievable in shape,

  559. unbelievable in determination

  560. and athletic ability.

  561. He's lost none of his skills.

  562. He's at the peak of his game.

  563. He is the greatest player

  564. of all time playing

  565. at an unbelievable level.

  566. And we're going into

  567. the game six in Utah

  568. against a highly ranked team,

  569. team that many,

  570. many people thought

  571. that Utah would win

  572. the basketball championship

  573. that week.

  574. Chicago's up three to two.

  575. They want to put it away.

  576. And so the coach,

  577. Phil Jackson,

  578. he gathers his 15 players

  579. before the game.

  580. I don't know what he said,

  581. okay?

  582. But what we know

  583. is when he gathered

  584. the 15 players,

  585. he probably said,

  586. like coaches are always

  587. supposed to do,

  588. it's going to be a team effort.

  589. Everybody has to take their role.

  590. Everybody has to play their part.

  591. Everybody has a part

  592. to win this game.

  593. But we all know

  594. whose big shoulders

  595. the whole game depends upon.

  596. And we need to make sure

  597. we give that ball

  598. to the guy

  599. with the really broad shoulders,

  600. Keith Booth.

  601. Keith Booth's a real guy.

  602. He actually was on the bench

  603. for that game.

  604. During the regular season,

  605. he only played in six games.

  606. And in the six games,

  607. he only managed to get,

  608. not per game,

  609. but total,

  610. five baskets.

  611. Okay?

  612. So we all know,

  613. the coach didn't say that.

  614. What did he say?

  615. Give the ball to Michael.

  616. That's what he said, right?

  617. And so last week,

  618. what I said is,

  619. when we want to have

  620. this big conflict

  621. with how science

  622. is understood today

  623. and how to understand

  624. human origins,

  625. if we want to have a big,

  626. if I'm going to have

  627. an argument like that,

  628. I don't want to give

  629. the ball to Moses.

  630. I want to give the ball

  631. to Jesus.

  632. I want to give the ball

  633. to Jesus.

  634. And so last week,

  635. we talked about,

  636. in the beginning,

  637. God created the heavens

  638. and the earth.

  639. Sorry,

  640. in the beginning was the Word,

  641. and the Word was with God,

  642. and the Word was God.

  643. He was with God

  644. in the beginning.

  645. All things were made

  646. through him,

  647. and without him,

  648. nothing was made

  649. that was made.

  650. In him was life,

  651. and the life

  652. was the light of men.

  653. And we tried to unpack

  654. the doctrine of creation,

  655. and we showed that

  656. from that,

  657. we can see that

  658. the very, very first verse

  659. in Genesis,

  660. we understand it

  661. from the perspective

  662. of Jesus.

  663. It's just teaching

  664. this very, very basic thing

  665. that God creates everything.

  666. He creates everything.

  667. He creates everything

  668. visible and invisible.

  669. He creates them

  670. out of nothing.

  671. He creates them

  672. by just saying,

  673. I want this to exist,

  674. and it exists.

  675. And creation

  676. is not like a stage set.

  677. He made it real

  678. with height and depth

  679. and backstory.

  680. And I shared the story

  681. last week

  682. about how I was watching

  683. a Star Trek episode,

  684. and I realized

  685. that what Q did

  686. helped me to understand

  687. the Christian doctrine

  688. of creation.

  689. In fact,

  690. I made a bit of a joke

  691. using Timothy Keller language.

  692. The Bible tells you

  693. of a true and greater Q.

  694. A true and greater Q.

  695. And to illustrate it,

  696. and I'll just switch

  697. the image up a little bit.

  698. Imagine for a second

  699. that we were really,

  700. really unbelievably

  701. faithful in prayer,

  702. and there was a need

  703. for God to do this.

  704. But we owned this land,

  705. let's say,

  706. but it's just

  707. an empty lot.

  708. And so,

  709. one Saturday,

  710. one of you have

  711. a prophetic word

  712. from God

  713. that if we just pray,

  714. you know how

  715. the Bible says

  716. mountains will move?

  717. And so we say,

  718. if we just pray,

  719. God will put a building

  720. on this spot like that.

  721. So we actually

  722. would convince,

  723. I have to confess,

  724. I do not have

  725. the gift of faith.

  726. I would not be

  727. at that prayer meeting

  728. on a Saturday

  729. across from the lot.

  730. In fact,

  731. I'd probably say,

  732. let's pray on the property,

  733. and people with

  734. the gift of faith

  735. would say,

  736. no, we can't pray

  737. on the property.

  738. God's going to put

  739. a building right here.

  740. So we do it

  741. across the street.

  742. We all close our eyes,

  743. we pray,

  744. we open our eyes,

  745. and the Ottawa

  746. little theater is here.

  747. God does a work

  748. of creation

  749. out of nothing.

  750. And we all come in,

  751. and it looks

  752. just like this.

  753. And we know

  754. that he made it

  755. out of nothing.

  756. But we come

  757. into the building,

  758. and we look at the seats,

  759. and, you know,

  760. some of you who are,

  761. you know,

  762. some technologically inclined,

  763. we could say,

  764. you know,

  765. those look like

  766. about 30-year-old seats.

  767. And you'd look

  768. at the carpet,

  769. and you'd go,

  770. you know,

  771. that looks like

  772. a 20- or 30-year-old carpet.

  773. And then you'd look

  774. at the curtains,

  775. and you'd know

  776. that some of the curtains

  777. are brand new,

  778. and some of the curtains

  779. are old,

  780. and you'd be able

  781. to figure out

  782. how to put the chairs

  783. together and everything

  784. like that.

  785. And so that's how

  786. God created all things.

  787. I used the example

  788. last week,

  789. that if God created

  790. everything just like that,

  791. it doesn't matter

  792. how long ago it is,

  793. if you just created

  794. it like that,

  795. and God sent you back

  796. in a time machine

  797. five seconds

  798. after he'd created

  799. all like that,

  800. would there be stars

  801. in the sky?

  802. Yes,

  803. there would be stars

  804. in the sky,

  805. even though the closest star

  806. is 4.2 light years away.

  807. And if you took

  808. a chainsaw

  809. and cut a tree,

  810. would it have rings?

  811. Yes,

  812. it would have a ring.

  813. It would have rings.

  814. God made everything

  815. with a back story.

  816. He made it

  817. so that we could

  818. take it apart,

  819. that we could understand it,

  820. that we could

  821. reverse engineer it.

  822. He made it

  823. because as we understand

  824. something maybe

  825. about how things

  826. are connected

  827. at a,

  828. you know,

  829. in this back story level,

  830. that it helps us

  831. to understand

  832. how light works.

  833. It helps us

  834. to understand

  835. how plants develop.

  836. It helps us

  837. to understand

  838. things that we can do

  839. to make things

  840. work in this world

  841. better,

  842. to develop

  843. better farming techniques

  844. and better vaccines.

  845. And that's what

  846. the doctrine of creation

  847. out of nothing means.

  848. And if you want

  849. to know more about it,

  850. you can listen

  851. to last week's sermon.

  852. But here's the thing.

  853. So we sort of

  854. get into our mind,

  855. okay, you know what,

  856. that actually makes sense.

  857. And in a sense,

  858. what I'm saying

  859. is that if somebody

  860. tells me,

  861. and somebody sent me

  862. a very helpful email

  863. this week about

  864. how old the Atlantic Ocean is

  865. and how many millions

  866. of years it is.

  867. And on one level,

  868. I want to say,

  869. see, what we have

  870. to understand

  871. is the doctrine

  872. of creation,

  873. if we really grasp it,

  874. it means that

  875. there's a real backstory

  876. and we can't really,

  877. it's sort of irrelevant

  878. whether God did it

  879. like sped up

  880. a long time

  881. or out of nothing.

  882. Like you can't actually

  883. tell from this doctrine.

  884. It just means

  885. you are free

  886. to study everything

  887. without fear.

  888. Study paleontology,

  889. study astronomy,

  890. study biology.

  891. You are free

  892. to do it

  893. without any fear.

  894. Go ahead and study.

  895. Because the doctrine

  896. of creation,

  897. when it says

  898. a backstory,

  899. it's not an illusion,

  900. it's not a lie,

  901. it's the way

  902. God made everything.

  903. And whether or not

  904. the ocean

  905. is that old

  906. or just looks

  907. that old

  908. or the backstory

  909. makes it look

  910. like it's that old,

  911. like that's

  912. an unimportant distinction.

  913. It has this backstory

  914. that we should be free

  915. to completely

  916. and utterly study.

  917. And so,

  918. you see,

  919. we think that,

  920. we sort of believe that,

  921. but then

  922. as soon as we get

  923. to studying this text,

  924. we want to forget

  925. that God does it

  926. like that

  927. and we want to try

  928. to figure out

  929. what the process is.

  930. But God doesn't,

  931. what is it?

  932. God does not need

  933. a process

  934. or a timeline

  935. to create.

  936. He speaks

  937. and what he wills

  938. is created

  939. with all of its

  940. heights and depths,

  941. fine-tuned intricacy

  942. and backstory.

  943. And this text

  944. is going to drive it home.

  945. God said and it was,

  946. God said and it was,

  947. God said and it was,

  948. God said and it was,

  949. God said and it was.

  950. If you missed it

  951. the first time,

  952. I'll say it again,

  953. God said and it was.

  954. And he doesn't say,

  955. okay,

  956. it's so good

  957. that there's all this

  958. matter and energy around,

  959. so out of this,

  960. I'm going to create light.

  961. No.

  962. We'll get to it

  963. in a moment.

  964. He sort of ignores

  965. verse 2 and just says

  966. and God said and it was.

  967. That's what wants

  968. to be emphasized.

  969. You see,

  970. it's not like

  971. making something,

  972. putting together

  973. something from Ikea.

  974. My wife

  975. is

  976. conservative estimate

  977. a hundred times

  978. more handy

  979. than I am.

  980. That's a conservative

  981. estimate.

  982. It's probably

  983. way north

  984. of a hundred times

  985. more handy

  986. than I am.

  987. You would all be surprised

  988. at how unhandy

  989. I am.

  990. But occasionally

  991. I can put together

  992. things from Ikea.

  993. It's very interesting

  994. when my wife and I,

  995. we don't usually do it together,

  996. but if we put things

  997. together from Ikea,

  998. my wife,

  999. because she's handy,

  1000. she doesn't really look

  1001. at the directions

  1002. until she gets stuck.

  1003. She just starts putting

  1004. things together,

  1005. right?

1006. If you came into the house

1007. to see me put together

  1008. something from Ikea,

1009. I open all of the packaging,

1010. I spread it all out

  1011. in the room,

  1012. I group things together,

1013. I open the little plastic bags,

  1014. and I make sure

  1015. that if it says

  1016. there's going to be

  1017. 16 of something,

  1018. that there's 16,

1019. and I group all the things

1020. in the little plastic bags

  1021. together,

1022. and then where it's well lit,

1023. I get the distractions out,

1024. and I start at one,

  1025. and then two,

  1026. and then three,

1027. and I follow the directions.

  1028. Okay?

  1029. God,

  1030. is it,

  1031. when God made everything,

  1032. he didn't,

  1033. it's not like Ikea.

1034. He doesn't have to have

  1035. a process.

  1036. Okay?

1037. And so when we remember

  1038. last week,

  1039. okay,

  1040. yeah,

  1041. yeah,

  1042. yeah,

  1043. yeah,

1044. we want to give the ball

  1045. to Jesus,

  1046. not Moses.

1047. We want to give the ball

  1048. to Michael Jordan,

  1049. not Keith Booth.

1050. So all we have to do

  1051. is just remember that

  1052. now when we start

  1053. to read this.

  1054. The big,

  1055. broad shoulders

  1056. of understanding

  1057. how things are

  1058. and what creation is,

  1059. that's carried by Jesus,

  1060. so maybe Genesis 1

  1061. is talking about

  1062. some other types

  1063. of things

  1064. and bringing certain

  1065. other types

  1066. of truths home.

  1067. Maybe that's what's

1068. going on with the text.

  1069. So let's look.

  1070. Get out your Bibles.

  1071. It's been a long introduction.

  1072. Genesis 1,

    Genesis 1:1

  1073. verse 1.

  1074. Genesis 1,

    Genesis 1:1

  1075. verse 1.

1076. And it begins like this.

  1077. In the beginning,

  1078. God created the heavens

  1079. and the earth.

1080. The earth was without form

  1081. and void,

  1082. and darkness was over

1083. the face of the deep,

1084. and the Spirit of God

  1085. was hovering

  1086. over the face

  1087. of the waters.

1088. Now this is a very

  1089. sort of curious text,

1090. and if you read commentaries

1091. like I had to this week,

1092. they're all over the map

1093. trying to figure this out.

  1094. I, you know,

  1095. I don't know what it is.

  1096. Maybe it's because

  1097. I'm Northern Irish,

  1098. and so I often

  1099. don't entirely go along

1100. with what all the experts say.

  1101. You know that book,

  1102. you know,

  1103. what's that saying?

  1104. God invented whiskey

  1105. so the Irish

  1106. wouldn't take over

  1107. the world

  1108. or something like that.

  1109. I don't know.

1110. But I'm Northern Irish stock,

  1111. Irish stock,

  1112. and so I often

  1113. don't go along

1114. with what all the experts say.

  1115. But, you know,

  1116. you just look at,

1117. look at verse 2 here.

  1118. It's very, very interesting.

  1119. Actually,

1120. if you could put up

  1121. the next point.

  1122. Mere matter and energy

  1123. will never create

  1124. life for a home.

1125. That's one of the things

1126. that right off the bat

1127. God just wants to say.

  1128. He says,

  1129. you have matter,

  1130. you know,

  1131. this picture of earth

  1132. and the deep,

1133. and it's just sort of like,

  1134. it's a poetic way

  1135. of talking about chaos.

  1136. It's just,

  1137. there's matter,

  1138. there's stuff,

  1139. there's energy,

  1140. there's depths.

  1141. But you know what?

  1142. All of the matter

1143. and all of the energy,

  1144. it's just,

  1145. it's formless.

  1146. You know,

  1147. it's like,

  1148. it's like if there's

  1149. a huge tsunami,

  1150. like when you saw

  1151. all of those pictures,

  1152. you know,

  1153. of a tsunami

  1154. or some big thing

  1155. that destroyed,

  1156. you know,

  1157. parts of the Pacific

  1158. or that destroyed

  1159. parts of Japan

1160. and when the wave is gone,

1161. all you have is chaos.

  1162. You have stuff

  1163. scattered all over.

  1164. There's nowhere to live.

  1165. Nothing got improved.

  1166. It's just,

  1167. it's just helter-skelter.

  1168. The laws of physics,

  1169. they all were followed.

  1170. But even though

1171. you have all the laws

  1172. of physics

1173. and all of the laws

  1174. of chemistry working,

  1175. it's just all chaos.

  1176. It's devoid of life.

  1177. It's empty.

1178. And that's what it says

1179. right here in verse 2,

  1180. that the earth

  1181. was without form

  1182. and void

  1183. and darkness

  1184. was over the face

  1185. of the deep.

  1186. There's no life.

  1187. There's no form.

  1188. There's no home.

  1189. And God

  1190. is different than chaos.

1191. And the Spirit of God

  1192. was hovering

  1193. over the face

  1194. of the waters.

  1195. You see,

  1196. if you remember

  1197. to give the ball

  1198. to Michael Jordan

  1199. or if you remember

  1200. to give the ball

  1201. to Jesus,

  1202. Jesus,

  1203. then you can start

  1204. to read this text

  1205. without having to think

1206. that it's having to deal,

  1207. that it's somehow

  1208. a pre-scientific way

  1209. of describing

  1210. evolutionary theory.

  1211. Like,

  1212. it's not trying

  1213. to do that.

  1214. Just remember,

1215. if you could put up

  1216. the next point,

  1217. here's the big choice

  1218. that faces us

  1219. all of the time.

  1220. It's the thing

  1221. that secular culture

  1222. does not want

  1223. to articulate

  1224. because when it's articulated,

  1225. we realize

  1226. that there's really

  1227. only one choice.

  1228. The choice,

1229. this is in a sense

  1230. the atheistic dream.

  1231. The atheistic dream

  1232. that somehow or another

  1233. has clothed itself

  1234. with science.

  1235. That matter,

  1236. pure chance,

  1237. and cause and effect

  1238. accounts for life

  1239. and the intricate,

  1240. fine-tuned universe.

  1241. Or,

  1242. what's the other choice?

  1243. that God designed

  1244. and created life

  1245. and the intricate,

  1246. fine-tuned universe.

1247. And I shared last week

  1248. about an atheist philosopher

  1249. who's still an atheist

  1250. but has said

  1251. that evolution,

1252. as it's understood right now,

  1253. cannot possibly be true.

  1254. And in fact,

  1255. he urges scientists

1256. to stop even going down

  1257. that way

  1258. because it's playing

  1259. into the hands

  1260. of people who believe

  1261. the second choice

1262. is the one that makes

  1263. the most sense.

  1264. And we all do.

  1265. You know,

  1266. Jeremiah,

  1267. I hope you know,

  1268. who read the text,

1269. if you just go ahead

  1270. and ask him,

  1271. he's doing his PhD

  1272. in biochemistry,

  1273. and ask him about

  1274. genetic sequencing

  1275. and whether that could

  1276. possibly happen by chance.

  1277. I mean,

  1278. you know,

  1279. here's the thing,

1280. you know that I love

  1281. murder mysteries,

  1282. I love books

  1283. where there's someone

  1284. who gets murdered

1285. and I know that sounds

  1286. really bad,

1287. but I love books like that.

1288. And if there was a guy

  1289. who came

1290. and he wanted to try

  1291. to make the accident,

  1292. make it look like,

  1293. you know,

1294. it was a bit of an accident,

  1295. he wanted to have

1296. the person suffer a bit first

  1297. and he comes up

  1298. to a deserted island

1299. and he jabs the guy

  1300. with a needle

  1301. and says,

  1302. you're going to die

  1303. in 15 minutes

1304. and it's on an island

  1305. where I'm sure predators

  1306. are going to eat

1307. most of your mortal remains,

  1308. they won't know

1309. that I've just injected you

  1310. with something

1311. that's going to kill you

  1312. in 15 minutes,

1313. I'm going to sink your boat,

  1314. they'll think it's an accident,

  1315. you don't have a cell phone,

  1316. you don't have nothing

1317. and then off he goes.

1318. And in that 15 minutes

  1319. the person goes

1320. and as they're getting weaker

  1321. they take some driftwood

1322. just beyond the high tide line

1323. and they use the driftwood

  1324. to spell

  1325. George killed me

  1326. and then they die

  1327. and then eventually

  1328. they find the body,

1329. they come and they arrest me

1330. and if my lawyer said,

  1331. listen,

  1332. there's no way,

  1333. we all know

  1334. that George killed me

  1335. spelled by driftwood,

1336. that was just a rogue wave

  1337. that came up

  1338. and as the wave

  1339. came back,

  1340. the wood just happened

  1341. there by chance,

  1342. nobody would believe that

  1343. and the universe

  1344. is vastly more complicated

  1345. than that

1346. so why do we believe that?

  1347. So keep this choice

1348. before you as you read

  1349. and understand

  1350. that it's in Genesis 1-1

1351. and in the New Testament

  1352. that the basic doctrine

  1353. of creation is taught

  1354. and what this text

1355. of Genesis 1 is doing

  1356. is it's helping us

  1357. to understand

  1358. even more deeply

  1359. that God creates

  1360. out of nothing

  1361. and who God is

  1362. let's continue reading

  1363. at verse 3

  1364. and God said

  1365. let there be light

  1366. and there was light

  1367. and God saw

1368. that the light was good

  1369. and God separated

1370. the light from the darkness

1371. God called the light day

  1372. and the darkness

  1373. he called night

  1374. and there was evening

  1375. and there was morning

  1376. the first day

  1377. now just sort of

  1378. pause about this

1379. you know one of the things

  1380. which is really cool

  1381. about this

  1382. go and look

  1383. at the very back

  1384. of your Bibles

  1385. to Revelation chapter 22

    Revelation 22 chapter mention

  1386. Revelation chapter 22

    Revelation 22 chapter mention

1387. and what is the last word

  1388. describing the future

1389. before the little ending bit

1390. in the book of Revelation

  1391. and telling you

  1392. how important it is

1393. to keep all the words

  1394. the last word

  1395. the last verse

  1396. is verse 5

  1397. of chapter 22

1398. and what does it say

  1399. so here we have

  1400. almost the third

  1401. word in the Bible

  1402. the third verse

  1403. in the Bible

1404. and what's the last verse

  1405. that talks about

1406. the end of chapter 22

  1407. verse 5

1408. and what does it say

1409. and night will be no more

1410. they will need no light

  1411. or lamp

  1412. or sun

  1413. for the Lord God

  1414. will be their light

  1415. and they will reign

  1416. forever and ever

  1417. and it's emphasized

  1418. if you go back

  1419. and read the last

1420. that little bit of a unit

  1421. begins at the end

  1422. of chapter 21

  1423. right up to there

  1424. twice it says

  1425. that there's no need

  1426. for light

1427. because God is the light

  1428. isn't sort of just

  1429. a bit of a cool thing

  1430. and it's interesting

  1431. because for many Christians

  1432. we read that part

  1433. and we just

1434. we just think in awe

1435. of what it will be like

1436. to be where God is

  1437. in the new heaven

  1438. and the new earth

1439. and whatever this image means

  1440. that there's no need

  1441. for a sun

  1442. or the stars

1443. because God is our light

  1444. and that final word

  1445. is the first word

  1446. God creates light

  1447. pretty cool

  1448. eh

  1449. how the Bible

  1450. fits together

  1451. let's skip down

  1452. to verse

  1453. to verse

  1454. to verse 6

  1455. keep reading

1456. actually before we read this

1457. here I want to get you

1458. if we run out of time

1459. this is the really big point

1460. I want to try to communicate

  1461. if we understand

  1462. that the burden

  1463. of understanding creation

  1464. that's carried on

  1465. Jesus' broad shoulders

  1466. read John 1

  1467. in the beginning

  1468. was the word

  1469. and the word

  1470. was with God

  1471. and the word

  1472. was God

  1473. he was with God

  1474. in the beginning

  1475. all things were created

  1476. through him

  1477. without him

  1478. nothing was made

  1479. that was made

  1480. and him was life

  1481. and the life

  1482. was the light

  1483. of man

  1484. should you go

1485. put up the next point

  1486. this is what

  1487. Genesis 1

1488. this is what the Bible

1489. one of the two big things

  1490. that this text

  1491. is trying to communicate

  1492. to you

  1493. image bearer

  1494. that's a human being

  1495. image bearer

  1496. know your creator

  1497. the one

  1498. transcendent

  1499. omnipotent

  1500. and good God

  1501. who made the cosmos

  1502. for your home

  1503. image bearer

  1504. that's how we're

  1505. to understand

1506. what a human being is

  1507. doesn't matter

  1508. if you're down syndrome

  1509. doesn't matter

  1510. if you're Usain Bolt

  1511. doesn't matter

  1512. if you're as brilliant

  1513. as Einstein

  1514. doesn't matter

1515. if you have a low IQ

  1516. image bearer

  1517. image bearer

  1518. know your creator

  1519. the one

  1520. transcendent

  1521. omnipotent

  1522. and good God

  1523. who made the cosmos

  1524. for your home

  1525. and you know

  1526. if you're at all

  1527. like me

  1528. your personality

  1529. I love abstract

  1530. statements like that

  1531. I love abstract

  1532. statements like that

  1533. I really do

  1534. I love it

1535. you know but for a lot

  1536. of people

1537. as soon as I started

  1538. to read that

  1539. you started thinking

  1540. about your laundry list

  1541. okay

  1542. like that's just not

  1543. how your minds work

  1544. right

  1545. you know

1546. might not even be aware

  1547. of it

  1548. that abstract language

  1549. comes

  1550. you think

1551. what am I going to

  1552. watch on Netflix

  1553. tonight

  1554. but for other people

  1555. this language

  1556. of the text

  1557. communicates it

  1558. how do you know

1559. that God is not light

  1560. and God said

  1561. let there be light

  1562. that's in a sense

  1563. a way to understand

  1564. transcendence

  1565. how do you know

  1566. that he's omnipotent

  1567. which means all powerful

  1568. and God said

  1569. let there be light

  1570. and there was light

  1571. how do you know

  1572. that he's good

1573. and everything that I make

  1574. it's good

  1575. and this story

  1576. this text

  1577. uses this very

  1578. very very powerful

  1579. series of language

  1580. and images

  1581. which are all

  1582. very very simple

  1583. and are basically

  1584. using everyday

  1585. perception talk

  1586. so that even

  1587. a three year old

  1588. as they're told

  1589. this story

  1590. will understand

  1591. at a deep level

  1592. even though they

  1593. don't understand

  1594. later on in life

1595. when they try to talk

  1596. about transcendence

  1597. the seeds of

  1598. understanding

  1599. transcendence

  1600. are planted

  1601. in this story

  1602. because of the way

  1603. their minds work

  1604. let's look at

  1605. verse 6

  1606. this is sort of

  1607. the hardest

  1608. of all the texts

  1609. and God said

1610. let there be an expanse

1611. in the midst of the waters

  1612. and let it separate

  1613. the waters

  1614. from the waters

1615. and God made the expanse

  1616. and separated the waters

1617. that were under the expanse

  1618. from the waters

1619. that were above the expanse

  1620. and it was so

1621. and God called the expanse

  1622. heaven

  1623. and there was evening

  1624. and there was morning

  1625. and the second day

  1626. here's the main thing

1627. to remember about this text

  1628. you know

1629. from a Jewish point of view

1630. or from the biblical point of view

  1631. this is Monday

  1632. and this second day

  1633. is the only one

  1634. of the seven days

  1635. where it doesn't

  1636. six days

  1637. where it doesn't

  1638. say it was good

  1639. even God

  1640. doesn't like Mondays

  1641. that's not the main

  1642. point of the text

  1643. sorry

  1644. that even God

  1645. doesn't like Mondays

  1646. probably the reason

  1647. it doesn't have

  1648. and it was good

  1649. is that the number

  1650. seven is really important

  1651. and there's seven goods

1652. and you want to emphasize

1653. the creation of human beings

  1654. by a double good

1655. and so they have to

  1656. take one away

  1657. it's not because

  1658. Mondays suck

  1659. but here's the thing

  1660. it's a bit complicated language

1661. and there's no real good words

  1662. in English

1663. what this is really bringing about

  1664. is that

  1665. here's a big big big word

  1666. all of this text

  1667. uses phenomenological language

  1668. in other words

  1669. the language of appearance

  1670. and you know what

1671. if we wanted to try to make

  1672. a creation story

  1673. that was scientific

  1674. and we did it

  1675. two thousand years ago

1676. we would read it now

1677. it would be so lame

1678. if we even tried to write it

1679. the way they wrote science

  1680. two hundred years ago

1681. we would read it now

  1682. and we would say

  1683. it was so lame

1684. and if we wrote it now

  1685. the way scientists

1686. would like to write it

1687. and if Jesus doesn't come back

  1688. in two hundred years

  1689. this is very humbling

  1690. our ancestors

1691. two hundred years from now

  1692. would say

  1693. this is so lame

  1694. Stephen Hawking's description

  1695. this is so lame

  1696. what never gets tired

  1697. what is timeless

  1698. phenomenological language

  1699. what do they see

  1700. it's from the perception

1701. that all of a sudden

  1702. there's space

  1703. and there's water above

  1704. like clouds

  1705. rain clouds

  1706. and water underneath

  1707. it's phenomenological language

  1708. continue on

  1709. verse six

  1710. verse nine

  1711. and God said

  1712. let the waters

  1713. under the heavens

  1714. be gathered together

  1715. into one place

1716. and let the dry land

  1717. appear

  1718. and it was so

1719. God called the dry land

  1720. earth

  1721. or better

  1722. actually better translation

  1723. would be land

  1724. and the waters

  1725. that were gathered together

  1726. that he called

  1727. seas

  1728. and God saw

  1729. that it was good

  1730. God saw

  1731. that it was good

  1732. now here's another thing

  1733. which shows you

  1734. that this text

  1735. is not at all

  1736. concerned

  1737. with

  1738. oh sorry

  1739. I stopped reading

  1740. too early

  1741. didn't I

  1742. verse 11

  1743. and God said

  1744. let the earth

  1745. sprout vegetation

  1746. plants yielding seed

  1747. and fruit trees

  1748. bearing fruit

1749. in which is their seed

  1750. each according

  1751. to its kind

  1752. on the earth

  1753. and it was so

  1754. the earth

  1755. brought forth

  1756. vegetation

  1757. plants yielding seed

1758. according to their own kinds

  1759. and trees bearing fruit

  1760. in which is seed

  1761. each according

  1762. to its kind

  1763. and God saw

  1764. that it was good

  1765. I'm sort of

  1766. messing up my reading

  1767. I apologize

  1768. and there was evening

  1769. there was morning

  1770. the third day

  1771. so here's the thing

  1772. another thing about it

  1773. shows that Moses

  1774. and all

  1775. isn't an idiot

  1776. right

  1777. remember that was

1778. one of my earlier points

1779. just assume for a second

  1780. he's not an idiot

1781. I'm not going to go

1782. but if you go back

  1783. later on

  1784. with your Bibles

1785. you look at day 1

  1786. and day 4

  1787. day 2

  1788. and day 5

  1789. day 3

  1790. and day 6

  1791. there's a pattern

  1792. and the pattern is

  1793. God makes

  1794. a series

  1795. of separations

  1796. or places

  1797. places

  1798. in days 1

  1799. 2

  1800. and 3

  1801. and in days

  1802. 4

  1803. 5

  1804. and 6

  1805. he makes

  1806. inhabitants

  1807. for the places

  1808. so day 4

  1809. day 1

  1810. describes a certain

  1811. type of separation

  1812. day 4

  1813. describes inhabitants

  1814. and all the way

  1815. through

  1816. it's a very

  1817. very obvious

  1818. pattern

1819. if you look at it

  1820. you see

  1821. because once again

  1822. remember one of my

  1823. earlier points

  1824. God doesn't have to

  1825. do a process

  1826. he just creates

  1827. so what's he doing

  1828. right now

  1829. he's trying to say

  1830. image bearer

  1831. know your creator

  1832. the one transcendent

  1833. omnipotent

  1834. and good God

  1835. who made the cosmos

  1836. for your home

  1837. that's why it uses

  1838. the language of days

  1839. that's why it uses

1840. the language of 7 days

  1841. because it's all

  1842. from the perspective

  1843. of human beings

  1844. God is making us

  1845. a home

1846. we are not an accident

1847. we are not a tragedy

  1848. it is not

  1849. as Hindu mythology

  1850. talks about

  1851. some ancient tragedy

  1852. amongst the one God

  1853. that there's different

  1854. emanations

  1855. and now there's us

  1856. human beings

  1857. as a tragedy

1858. and we have to get

  1859. back to the one

1860. we are not an accident

  1861. it is not like

  1862. ancient mythology

  1863. where God is creating

  1864. the gods create

  1865. human beings

  1866. to serve them

  1867. to feed them

  1868. to wash them

1869. and to care for them

  1870. no we are not

  1871. made as slaves

  1872. we are made as

  1873. image bearers

  1874. it is not that

  1875. we are sent here

  1876. as a punishment

  1877. this is our home

  1878. and the language

  1879. is phenomenological

  1880. language

  1881. it's the language

  1882. of human beings

  1883. looking and seeing

  1884. because God made us

1885. to live in this place

  1886. as our home

  1887. with him

1888. if you could put up

  1889. the next point

  1890. Andrew please

  1891. see here's the other

  1892. big thing

  1893. that the text

  1894. wants to tell us

  1895. every claimant

  1896. to be a rival

  1897. to God

  1898. is unmasked

  1899. as a fraud

  1900. every claimant

  1901. to be a rival

  1902. to God

  1903. is unmasked

  1904. as a fraud

  1905. this is really

  1906. seen very clearly

1907. in the very next word

  1908. the very next day

  1909. which begins

  1910. on verses 14

  1911. and 14

  1912. and God said

  1913. let there be lights

1914. this is the fourth day

  1915. let there be lights

  1916. in the expanse

  1917. of the heavens

  1918. to separate

  1919. the day

  1920. from the night

  1921. let them be

  1922. for signs

  1923. and for seasons

  1924. and for days

  1925. and years

  1926. and let them be

  1927. lights in the expanse

  1928. of the heavens

  1929. to give light

  1930. upon the earth

  1931. and it was so

  1932. see this thing

  1933. about God

  1934. being all powerful

  1935. let

  1936. it was so

  1937. let

  1938. it was so

  1939. speak

  1940. it is so

  1941. he's

  1942. and you know what

  1943. it's not that

1944. it's coming out of it

  1945. it's not like a mythology

  1946. where God gives birth

  1947. to us

1948. and we are the same

  1949. stuff of God

  1950. the myth of pantheism

  1951. and panentheism

  1952. no God is separate

  1953. from his created order

  1954. he speaks

  1955. and it is

  1956. and he's all powerfully

  1957. speaks and it is

  1958. and he's good

  1959. because what he makes

  1960. is good

  1961. verse 16

  1962. and God made

  1963. the two great lights

  1964. the greater light

  1965. to rule the day

  1966. and the lesser light

  1967. to rule the night

  1968. and the stars

  1969. and God set them

  1970. in the expanse

  1971. of the heavens

  1972. to give light

  1973. on the earth

1974. to rule over the day

  1975. and over the night

  1976. and to separate

  1977. the light

  1978. from the darkness

  1979. and God saw

  1980. that it was good

  1981. and there was evening

  1982. and there was morning

  1983. the fourth day

  1984. now did Moses

  1985. not know

  1986. to call one thing

  1987. the sun

  1988. and the other thing

  1989. the moon

  1990. see what's the other

  1991. thing that's going on

  1992. if the first thing

  1993. that's going on

  1994. in this text

  1995. is that

  1996. know your God

  1997. know your creator

  1998. there's only one creator

  1999. not a million creators

  2000. we're not a result

  2001. of blind chance

  2002. we're not

  2003. a divine accident

  2004. of tragedy

  2005. there is a creator

  2006. there's only one creator

  2007. he is all powerful

  2008. he is transcendent

  2009. he is good

  2010. and he made us

  2011. as human beings

  2012. to bear his image

  2013. in this cosmos

  2014. and this cosmos

  2015. is our home

  2016. we were made

  2017. to live here

2018. and there are no other

  2019. claimants

  2020. that can claim

  2021. to be like God

  2022. in the ancient world

  2023. in virtually every

  2024. ancient pagan religion

2025. the sun is a god

2026. and the moon is a god

  2027. and so

  2028. the writer of Genesis

  2029. intentionally

  2030. does not say

  2031. the word for sun

  2032. and moon

  2033. in case

  2034. ancient pagans

  2035. mistakenly understood

  2036. that God created

  2037. the sun god

  2038. and the moon god

  2039. so the name

  2040. of the sun

  2041. and the moon

  2042. is not spoken

2043. and all of the way

  2044. through this text

  2045. the ancient world

  2046. well

  2047. there's a god

  2048. or goddess

  2049. of fertility

  2050. there's a god

  2051. or goddess

  2052. of earth

  2053. there's a god

  2054. or goddess

  2055. of the sky

  2056. there's a god

  2057. or goddess

  2058. and the stars

  2059. chaos

  2060. is a god

  2061. or a goddess

  2062. and throughout

2063. all of the ancient world

  2064. there's

  2065. the sea monsters

  2066. are types of gods

  2067. or goddesses

2068. in every one of these cases

2069. what does this text say?

  2070. and God said

  2071. and God said

  2072. and God said

  2073. and God said

  2074. and God said

  2075. and God said

  2076. he creates them

  2077. the text

  2078. destroys

  2079. any notion

  2080. of there being

  2081. multiple gods

  2082. just as

  2083. Genesis 1 and 2

  2084. Genesis chapter 1

    Genesis 1:1

  2085. verses 1 and 2

  2086. and the whole doctrine

  2087. of creation

  2088. says that the

  2089. atheistic dream

  2090. of accounting

  2091. for all things

  2092. that exist

  2093. without God existing

  2094. is revealed

  2095. to be

  2096. a fraud

  2097. you see

  2098. friends

  2099. this is why

  2100. it's so important

  2101. that we read

  2102. Genesis 1

  2103. without fear

2104. and that when we read

  2105. Genesis 1 and Genesis 2

  2106. we don't slip back

  2107. into the mindset

  2108. of the world

2109. I'm going to give the ball

  2110. to Keith Booth

  2111. no

  2112. give the ball

  2113. to Michael Jordan

  2114. give the ball

  2115. to Jesus

  2116. okay

  2117. Jesus has the ball

2118. he's won in the game

  2119. so let's look at

  2120. these other things

  2121. what other things

2122. is this text telling us

  2123. there is one God

  2124. he is the creator

  2125. he is transcendent

  2126. he is all powerful

  2127. he is good

  2128. all claimants

  2129. to any of these

  2130. roles are a fraud

  2131. do not believe them

  2132. it is a lie

  2133. no God

2134. I have to wrap this up

  2135. because of the time

  2136. just want to say

  2137. a couple of things

  2138. let's just

  2139. you get the basic

2140. story with all of this

  2141. can you

  2142. just look down here

  2143. to verse 27

2144. we are going to say

  2145. more about this

2146. what I am going to be doing

  2147. with these sermons

  2148. is that

  2149. next week

2150. we are going to look

2151. at the second creation story

  2152. and then after that

  2153. we are going to

  2154. loop back

2155. and spend a whole sermon

  2156. just on these

  2157. these three

2158. a couple of these verses

2159. at the end of chapter 1

  2160. and then after that

2161. I am going to loop back

  2162. and look at something

  2163. in more detail

  2164. in chapter 2

2165. but look at this here

  2166. verse 25

  2167. and God said

  2168. let us make man

  2169. in our image

  2170. after our likeness

  2171. and let them have

  2172. dominion over the fish

  2173. of the sea

  2174. and over the birds

  2175. of the heavens

  2176. and over the livestock

2177. and over all the earth

  2178. and every creeping thing

2179. that creeps on the earth

  2180. and here this

  2181. threefold thing

  2182. a poem

  2183. a song

  2184. for emphasis

  2185. so God created man

  2186. in his own image

2187. in the image of God

  2188. he created him

  2189. male and female

  2190. he created them

  2191. human beings

  2192. are unique

  2193. on one hand

  2194. we are creatures

  2195. on another hand

  2196. we are unique

  2197. and different

  2198. than anything else

  2199. in all of creation

  2200. only human beings

  2201. a fertilized

  2202. egg

  2203. attached

  2204. to the womb

  2205. of its mother

  2206. right up to

  2207. Usain Bolt

  2208. and Albert Einstein

  2209. and George Clooney

  2210. and Justin Trudeau

  2211. we only

  2212. bear God's image

  2213. which why it is

  2214. is why it is

  2215. if a house

  2216. is on fire

  2217. and a firefighter

  2218. she runs

  2219. into the house

  2220. and she only

  2221. has a chance

2222. she only has a choice

  2223. of either

  2224. rescuing the German

  2225. shepherd

  2226. or the baby

  2227. in the crib

  2228. if she came out

  2229. with the German

  2230. shepherd

  2231. we would all

  2232. know at the most

  2233. fundamental level

  2234. that she's created

  2235. she's done a great

  2236. evil

  2237. if she said

  2238. well there's no

  2239. difference between

  2240. a dog and a baby

  2241. in fact

  2242. you know they probably

  2243. spent $1500

  2244. on that dog

  2245. the baby was free

  2246. like how would that

  2247. go in the news

  2248. we all know

  2249. at a very distinct

  2250. level that the

  2251. firefighter who would

  2252. go in to rescue

  2253. the dog

  2254. and let the baby

  2255. human baby

  2256. die

  2257. has done a great

  2258. evil

  2259. only the wisdom

  2260. of the Bible

  2261. makes that

  2262. fundamental

  2263. insight

  2264. clear

  2265. within a clear

  2266. framework

  2267. so I'm sorry

  2268. I've gone a little

  2269. bit long

  2270. so you know what

  2271. what's all this

  2272. telling us

  2273. friends

  2274. if you feel

  2275. at all inclined

  2276. to study

  2277. astronomy

  2278. study astronomy

  2279. study biology

  2280. study biochemistry

  2281. study geology

  2282. study paleontology

  2283. don't be afraid

  2284. of it

  2285. it's just

  2286. unpacking

  2287. God's great

  2288. design

  2289. in the back

  2290. story

  2291. and just a couple

  2292. of other things

  2293. about why this

  2294. is so important

  2295. in the gospel

  2296. Andrew if you could

  2297. put up the next

  2298. point please

  2299. what this text

  2300. is showing

  2301. is that only

  2302. God can create

  2303. it's not going to

  2304. be for a couple

  2305. of weeks

  2306. that we get

  2307. to the great

  2308. tragedy

  2309. as to why

  2310. we need a

  2311. savior

  2312. but what this

  2313. text emphasizes

  2314. time and time

  2315. and time

  2316. and time

  2317. again

  2318. and God

  2319. said

  2320. and God

  2321. said

  2322. and God

  2323. said

  2324. and God

  2325. said

  2326. is that only

  2327. God can

  2328. create

  2329. and if only

  2330. God can

  2331. create

  2332. only he can

  2333. recreate

  2334. only he can

  2335. do that

  2336. and all we

  2337. can do is

  2338. accept how

  2339. he does it

  2340. by faith

  2341. next point

  2342. if you go back

  2343. later on

  2344. and you read

  2345. the seventh

  2346. day of creation

  2347. you'll see

  2348. it's very

  2349. very interesting

  2350. on the seventh

  2351. day of creation

  2352. it said that

  2353. God's work

  2354. was finished

  2355. and by the way

  2356. it's very

  2357. interesting

  2358. if you'll notice

  2359. you read

  2360. the seventh

  2361. day of creation

  2362. there's no

  2363. and there was

  2364. evening

  2365. and there was

  2366. morning

  2367. a seventh

  2368. day

  2369. the rhythm

  2370. is broken

  2371. the Sabbath

  2372. rest

  2373. God's intention

  2374. to create

  2375. a home

  2376. for us

  2377. that he

  2378. would dwell

  2379. with us

  2380. that's described

  2381. in that

  2382. seventh day

  2383. and in that

  2384. text it says

  2385. God's finished

  2386. from his work

  2387. and on the

  2388. cross

  2389. God the

  2390. son of God

  2391. said it is

  2392. finished

  2393. this is the

  2394. gospel

  2395. you see

  2396. that only

  2397. God can

  2398. create

  2399. so only he

  2400. can recreate

  2401. and that just

  2402. as God

  2403. after he had

  2404. finished

  2405. creating

  2406. it was

  2407. finished

  2408. and Jesus

  2409. as he's

  2410. dying upon

  2411. the cross

  2412. as our

  2413. savior

  2414. the same

  2415. one

  2416. who is in a

  2417. sense the

  2418. source of

  2419. all light

  2420. at the

  2421. end of

  2422. the days

  2423. the beginning

  2424. of the

  2425. new and

  2426. final story

  2427. as he dies

  2428. on the

  2429. cross

  2430. he says

  2431. it is

  2432. finished

  2433. that's

  2434. why this

  2435. creation

  2436. text

  2437. it helps

  2438. us to

  2439. understand

  2440. the greatness

  2441. and the

  2442. depth

  2443. of what

  2444. Jesus

  2445. does

  2446. for us

  2447. on the

  2448. cross

  2449. that it's

  2450. not something

  2451. we can

  2452. add our

  2453. works

  2454. to

  2455. our

  2456. liturgies

  2457. to

  2458. our

  2459. rituals

  2460. to

  2461. or anything

  2462. like that

  2463. it is

  2464. only something

  2465. that God

  2466. can do

  2467. and that

  2468. we can

  2469. only receive

  2470. it by

  2471. faith

  2472. I invite you

  2473. to stand

  2474. if you're

  2475. here and

  2476. you're not

  2477. sure if you've

  2478. ever given

  2479. your life to

  2480. Jesus there's

  2481. no better

  2482. time than

  2483. today to

  2484. just say

  2485. in fact

  2486. actually I'm

  2487. just going to

  2488. say a

  2489. simple prayer

  2490. I don't

  2491. want you

  2492. to pray

  2493. it out

  2494. loud

  2495. but if

  2496. you're

  2497. here in

  2498. this room

  2499. and it's

  2500. you've

  2501. come to

  2502. that point

  2503. where you

  2504. just recognize

  2505. that you

  2506. need a

  2507. savior

  2508. and that

  2509. Jesus

  2510. he's the

  2511. one who

  2512. can recreate

  2513. you

  2514. he's the

  2515. one who

  2516. completed the

  2517. work needed

  2518. to recreate

  2519. you

  2520. then if

  2521. you just

  2522. just silently

  2523. not out

  2524. loud but

  2525. just silently

  2526. I'll try to

  2527. leave a pause

  2528. just pray a

  2529. prayer like

  2530. this

  2531. just this

  2532. is

  2533. it comes

  2534. from your

  2535. will or

  2536. your desire

  2537. I'm just

  2538. trying to

  2539. help you

  2540. put language

  2541. to it

  2542. God I

  2543. know that

  2544. you exist

  2545. I know

  2546. that Jesus

  2547. is the

  2548. savior

  2549. Jesus

  2550. be my

  2551. savior

  2552. come into

  2553. my life

  2554. and never

  2555. leave

  2556. save me

  2557. completely

  2558. make your

  2559. holy spirit

  2560. to come

  2561. and live

  2562. within me

  2563. amen

  2564. father for

  2565. all of us

  2566. pour out

  2567. your holy

  2568. spirit

  2569. upon us

  2570. help us

  2571. to be

  2572. trusting in

  2573. your word

  2574. and confident

  2575. in your

  2576. word

  2577. help us

  2578. father to

  2579. study your

  2580. word

  2581. and make

  2582. us
